  1. Who is Jesus of Nazareth?

  2. Who is He?

  3. Well, whoever He is, He can't ride the fence.

  4. Jesus of Nazareth calls for a response.

  5. You will either deny Him,

  6. whether that's blatant or not so blatant,

  7. or you'll live for Him.

  8. Everything you've got for Him.

  9. Jesus calls for a response.

  10. And to learn who Jesus of Nazareth claims to be,

  11. we turn to the Gospels.

  12. The Gospels are books of the Bible

  13. that provide historical accounts

  14. of the life, teaching, miracles,

  15. death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.

  16. So, if we're going to ask,

  17. who is Jesus?

  18. We turn to the Gospels.

  19. If you would open up your Bibles

  20. and turn to the Gospel of Luke 7.

  21. The Gospel of Luke 7.

  22. This morning, I want to get you

  23. to an unforgettable dinner party.

  24. It's awesome.

  25. It took place in the house of a guy named Simon.

  26. And I want you there

  27. because we learned the answer to the question,

  28. who is Jesus?

  29. Who is this Jesus of Nazareth?

  30. And what we're also going to see

  31. are two very different responses to Jesus.

  32. First, let's go back to 1st century Judea.

  33. So, turning to Luke 7.

  34. I want to help you see some things.

  35. What I'm going to do right now

  36. is just kind of walk you through Luke 7.

  37. I'm not going to read it.

  38. I'm just going to kind of skip through it.

  39. You just follow along with me.

  40. You ready?

  41. Let's go.

  42. Now, if we showed up,

  43. if we got in a time machine

  44. and went back to Judea, 1st century,

  45. we would find ourselves in an area

  46. that was buzzing with news of Jesus.

  47. Who is this guy?

  48. There's a lot going on.

  49. Well, we hear that Jesus has just heard

  50. or healed the servant of a Roman centurion.

  51. That's chapter 7, 1 through 10.

  52. The servant was at the point of death

  53. and we hear that Jesus just healed him

  54. from a distance.

  55. From a distance!

  56. Who is this guy?

  57. And then we hear that this Jesus,

  58. while in a town called Nain,

  59. you'll see this in chapter 7, verses 11 through 17,

  60. he comes across a funeral procession

  61. of a young man.

  62. Well, he was the only son of a widow.

  63. And so this widow's social security

  64. just died with her boy.

  65. So Jesus comes along this funeral procession,

  66. sees the mom,

  67. has compassion on her,

  68. goes right up to this dead boy

  69. and says,

  70. young man,

  71. I say to you,

  72. arise.

  73. And you know what happened?

  74. The young man sits up.

  75. It doesn't record what he said.

  76. Who are you?

  77. We don't know.

  78. Are the Packers playing this afternoon?

  79. It doesn't say that.

  80. I'm hungry.

  81. Can you give me something to eat?

  82. It doesn't say anything like that.

  83. What we do read about

  84. is the response of everybody else.

  85. There's a prophet among us.

  86. God has visited us.

  87. There's fear.

  88. There's amazement.

  89. Who is this guy

  90. that just raised this young man

  91. from the dead

  92. and handed him back to his mother?

  93. Who is this guy?

  94. In Luke 7, 18-35,

  95. we see a very interesting interaction

  96. between Jesus

  97. and the disciples of John the Baptist.

  98. John the Baptist

  99. sends a couple of his followers

  100. to Jesus to ask him,

  101. are you the one who is to come?

  102. Or shall we look for another?

  103. In other words,

  104. who are you, Jesus?

  105. Specifically,

  106. are you the long-awaited Messiah?

  107. Are you the promised one

  108. who would deliver God's people?

  109. And in 22 and 23,

  110. Jesus gives an answer.

  111. He says,

  112. Go tell John, my cousin,

  113. go tell him

  114. the blind receive their sight,

  115. the lame walk,

  116. lepers are cleansed,

  117. the deaf hear,

  118. the dead are raised,

  119. the poor hear the good news

  120. preached to them,

  121. blessed is the one

  122. who is not offended by me.

  123. Sounds like Jesus is saying,

  124. yeah, I'm the one.

  125. I'm the one.

  126. I'm the long-anticipated one.

  127. And that brings us up

  128. to this amazing dinner party.

  129. It's just simply amazing.

  130. Unforgettable.

  131. Let me read it for you.

  132. Verses 36-50.

  133. One of the Pharisees

  134. asked him to eat with him,

  135. asked Jesus to eat with him,

  136. and Jesus went into

  137. the Pharisee's house

  138. and took his place at the table.

  139. And behold,

  140. a woman of the city

  141. who was a sinner,

  142. when she learned

  143. that he was reclining

  144. at a table

  145. in the Pharisee's house,

  146. brought an alabaster flask

  147. of ointment.

  148. And standing behind him

  149. at his feet,

  150. weeping,

  151. she began to wet his feet

  152. with her tears

  153. and wipe them

  154. with the hair of her head

  155. and kissed his feet

  156. and anointed them

  157. with the ointment.

  158. Now when the Pharisee

  159. who had invited him

  160. saw this,

  161. he said to himself,

  162. if this man were a prophet,

  163. he would have known

  164. who and what sort of woman

  165. this is who is touching him,

  166. for she is a sinner.

  167. And Jesus answering,

  168. said to him,

  169. Simon,

  170. I have something

  171. to say to you.

  172. And he said,

  173. say it, teacher.

  174. A certain money lender

  175. had two debtors.

  176. One owed 500 denarii,

  177. the other 50.

  178. One that could not pay,

  179. he canceled the debt of both.

  180. Now which of them

  181. will love him more?

  182. Simon answered,

  183. the one,

  184. I suppose,

  185. for whom he canceled

  186. the larger debt.

  187. And Jesus said to him,

  188. you have judged rightly.

  189. Then turning toward the woman,

  190. he said to Simon,

  191. do you see this woman

  192. I entered your house?

  193. But she has wet my feet

  194. with her,

  195. excuse me,

  196. I entered your house.

  197. You gave me no water

  198. for my feet,

  199. but she has wet my feet

  200. with her tears

  201. and wiped them

  202. with her hair.

  203. You gave me no kiss,

  204. but from the time

  205. I came in,

  206. she has not ceased

  207. to kiss my feet.

  208. You did not anoint

  209. my head with oil,

  210. but she has anointed

  211. my feet with ointment.

  212. Therefore I tell you this,

  213. her sins,

  214. which are many,

  215. are forgiven.

  216. For she loved much,

  217. but he who is forgiven little

  218. loves little.

  219. And he said to her,

  220. your sins are forgiven.

  221. We'll finish off the rest

  222. in a little bit.

  223. Now you've got to understand

  224. some things culturally

  225. about first century Judea.

  226. Typically when a dinner guest

  227. showed up at the home

  228. of someone in the first century,

  229. the guest would either

  230. be given water

  231. to wash his or her feet,

  232. or there would be

  233. a servant there

  234. to wash his or her feet.

  235. It was a nasty thing

  236. walking around in sandals

  237. in the first century.

  238. It was pretty gross.

  239. And so they would come in,

  240. they would have their feet

  241. cleansed.

  242. It would have been

  243. very refreshing.

  244. It was just common courtesy

  245. of the time.

  246. But it didn't happen

  247. to Jesus in Simon's house.

  248. Typically a guest

  249. would be greeted

  250. with a kiss from the host.

  251. Common courtesy.

  252. The host is saying simply,

  253. welcome,

  254. you're at peace here.

  255. We didn't see that happen

  256. from Simon to Jesus.

  257. And typically a guest

  258. would be given a dab

  259. of olive oil

  260. on their forehead.

  261. It was fragrant,

  262. a gesture of welcome,

  263. common courtesy,

  264. but it did not happen

  265. in Simon's house.

  266. When Jesus showed up

  267. to Simon's house,

  268. it was kind of icy.

  269. No common courtesy is here.

  270. Simon did not welcome

  271. Jesus into his house.

  272. Simon's self-righteous pride

  273. was suspicious of this Jesus.

  274. There was a power play going on

  275. around this table.

  276. Simon was guarded towards Jesus.

  277. Simon was distanced towards Jesus.

  278. And it was not an uncommon response

  279. to being in the presence

  280. of Jesus of Nazareth.

  281. But you could cut the tension

  282. with a knife.

  283. Now when Jesus took his place

  284. at Simon's table,

  285. he did not pull up a chair.

  286. At Thanksgiving this Thursday,

  287. probably you'll be sitting

  288. in a chair.

  289. Not in the first century Judea.

  290. What they would do is

  291. there would be these

  292. lowered tables

  293. and you'd walk in

  294. and they would recline a table.

  295. So you'd recline

  296. on your left hand

  297. and then you would eat

  298. with your right feet

  299. out away from the table

  300. because they're usually

  301. kind of stinky still.

  302. And so when Jesus comes,

  303. he takes his spot

  304. at the table

  305. with his feet still dirty.

  306. Then the real controversy

  307. breaks out.

  308. And you thought

  309. it was already tense.

  310. In verse 37,

  311. we read about someone

  312. walking in.

  313. She's called

  314. a woman of the city.

  315. Most likely

  316. a prostitute.

  317. She walks into the room

  318. carrying an alabaster jar

  319. of perfume.

  320. She must have

  321. already heard

  322. Jesus preach.

  323. She must have already

  324. been convinced

  325. of who this man is.

  326. Because she comes

  327. into this room,

  328. Simon's house,

  329. already believing.

  330. She's already convinced

  331. of this one

  332. reclining at table

  333. across from Simon.

  334. She already knows

  335. something about him.

  336. She's already been forgiven.

  337. She's a changed person

  338. already.

  339. You can see that

  340. in what's about

  341. to take place.

  342. For this woman

  343. to walk into

  344. this man's house

  345. was courageous.

  346. We have a prostitute

  347. in a Pharisee's house.

  348. Two very different people.

  349. very different people.

  350. Her faith

  351. in this man

  352. with the dirty feet

  353. was the reason

  354. why she had been

  355. cleaned from her dirt.

  356. She was coming

  357. to see Jesus.

  358. She was drawn

  359. to him.

  360. She wanted to be

  361. with him.

  362. She knew something

  363. about him

  364. that obviously

  365. Simon did not.

  366. She comes in

  367. and she stands

  368. behind Jesus

  369. and starts weeping.

  370. Now it seemed

  371. as though she walked

  372. in with this

  373. alabaster jar

  374. of perfume

  375. and her intention

  376. was just to simply

  377. anoint Jesus.

  378. And so she comes up

  379. and she comes up

  380. behind Jesus

  381. and she loses it.

  382. She loses it.

  383. She starts weeping

  384. uncontrolled.

  385. She loses it.

  386. She goes to plan B.

  387. Her big tears

  388. are dripping

  389. on Jesus' feet.

  390. She's overwhelmed.

  391. She's overwhelmed

  392. with gratitude.

  393. And so then

  394. she does something

  395. amazing.

  396. She lets down

  397. her hair.

  398. Simon would have

  399. been aghast.

  400. What?

  401. What is she doing?

  402. Here's why.

  403. First century Judea

  404. only wives

  405. let down their hair

  406. for their husbands.

  407. It was a

  408. demonstration

  409. of intimacy.

  410. This woman

  411. was just reaching

  412. for whatever

  413. she could grab

  414. in order to wipe

  415. the tears

  416. and clean the feet

  417. of her savior.

  418. She had no

  419. sexual intent.

  420. None whatsoever.

  421. She was using

  422. the only thing

  423. she had

  424. to wipe

  425. the dirty feet

  426. of her savior.

  427. Something that

  428. Simon wasn't

  429. intent on doing.

  430. And then she

  431. starts to kiss

  432. his feet.

  433. Keep on kissing

  434. his feet.

  435. Then she pours

  436. out some of the

  437. perfume on his

  438. feet.

  439. The room

  440. would have been

  441. filled with

  442. the fragrance.

  443. this woman's

  444. overwhelming

  445. gratitude

  446. for what

  447. Christ

  448. had done

  449. for her

  450. brings

  451. an

  452. atmospheric

  453. change

  454. to

  455. the room.

  456. It's got

  457. everything to do

  458. with this person

  459. Jesus.

  460. It's got everything

  461. to do with him.

  462. Was this like

  463. overly extravagant?

  464. Was this woman

  465. kind of over the top?

  466. Not at all.

  467. Not at all.

  468. This was the

  469. right response

  470. of a woman

  471. who knew

  472. what she

  473. had been

  474. forgiven of

  475. and knew

  476. who with

  477. some inclination

  478. of who this

  479. man must be.

  480. verse 39

  481. Simon is

  482. taking all

  483. of it in.

  484. And he's

  485. thinking to

  486. himself

  487. if this

  488. man were

  489. a prophet

  490. he would

  491. have known

  492. who and

  493. what sort

  494. of woman

  495. this is

  496. who is

  497. touching him

  498. for she

  499. is a

  500. sinner.

  501. In other

  502. words

  503. he should

  504. have no

  505. business

  506. with her.

  507. The irony

  508. is in

  509. verse 40

  510. Jesus

  511. knows

  512. exactly

  513. what he's

  514. thinking.

  515. He is

  516. a prophet.

  517. He's

  518. more than

  519. a prophet.

  520. Because not

  521. only does he

  522. know what

  523. this man's

  524. thinking

  525. he knows

  526. everything

  527. about this

  528. woman.

  529. And he

  530. welcomes

  531. her.

  532. He does

  533. not flinch

  534. as she

  535. cleans

  536. his feet.

  537. He welcomes

  538. her.

  539. Who is

  540. this guy?

  541. Who is

  542. he?

  543. Well

  544. Jesus

  545. seizes

  546. the moment

  547. as Simon

  548. is

  549. Simonizing

  550. and he

  551. says

  552. hey

  553. Simon

  554. I have

  555. something

  556. to say

  557. to you.

  558. Go

  559. right ahead

  560. teacher

  561. Simon

  562. says

  563. to which

  564. Jesus

  565. shares

  566. a parable.

  567. A

  568. parable

  569. designed

  570. to explain

  571. the overwhelming

  572. gratitude

  573. of this

  574. woman

  575. and it's

  576. designed

  577. to expose

  578. the hardness

  579. of heart

  580. of Simon.

  581. His heart

  582. was about

  583. as hard

  584. as the

  585. table

  586. that

  587. separated

  588. him

  589. from

  590. Jesus.

  591. Here's

  592. the parable.

  593. A certain

  594. money lender

  595. had two

  596. debtors.

  597. One

  598. debtor

  599. owed

  600. the equivalent

  601. of 20

  602. months of

  603. pay.

  604. The other

  605. two months

  606. of pay.

  607. One

  608. owed

  609. ten times

  610. as much

  611. as the

  612. other.

  613. To put it

  614. in our

  615. day

  616. figures.

  617. Let's

  618. say

  619. one

  620. owed

  621. $60,000

  622. and the

  623. other

  624. owed

  625. $6,000.

  626. That's

  627. quite a lot

  628. of money.

  629. 60

  630. grand.

  631. That's

  632. a lot

  633. of money.

  634. But what

  635. we see

  636. in verse

  637. 42

  638. is a

  639. very

  640. important

  641. point

  642. Jesus

  643. makes.

  644. Both

  645. couldn't

  646. pay.

  647. Both

  648. were

  649. insolvent.

  650. They

  651. didn't

  652. have it.

  653. They

  654. didn't

  655. have

  656. the

  657. capacity.

  658. They

  659. couldn't

  660. pay

  661. this

  662. debt.

  663. So

  664. Jesus

  665. goes

  666. on.

  667. He

  668. goes

  669. on to

  670. share

  671. that

  672. the

  673. money

  674. lender

  675. goes

  676. on

  677. to

  678. forgive,

  679. cancel

  680. both

  681. debts.

  682. In

  683. other

  684. words,

  685. debts

  686. are

  687. forgiven.

  688. And

  689. then

  690. Jesus

  691. in a

  692. stroke

  693. of

  694. brilliance,

  695. he's

  696. a

  697. teacher

  698. unlike

  699. any

  700. other.

  701. In

  702. a

  703. stroke

  704. of

  705. brilliance

  706. he

  707. says

  708. to

  709. Simon,

  710. asks

  711. him,

  712. now

  713. which

  714. of

  715. the

  716. two

  717. debtors

  718. will

  719. love

  720. the

  721. money

  722. lender

  723. more?

  724. Both are

  725. canceled.

  726. Which one

  727. will love

  728. him more?

  729. Simon responds

  730. and you can

  731. hear his

  732. guardedness

  733. in the

  734. response.

  735. The one,

  736. I suppose,

  737. who owed

  738. the larger

  739. debt.

  740. That's right,

  741. says Jesus.

  742. And then he

  743. turns to the

  744. woman and

  745. says to

  746. Simon,

  747. Simon,

  748. when I

  749. walked into

  750. your house

  751. you gave

  752. me no

  753. water for

  754. my feet

  755. but she

  756. wet my

  757. feet with

  758. her tears

  759. and wiped

  760. them with

  761. her hair.

  762. You gave

  763. me no

  764. kiss but

  765. she hasn't

  766. stopped

  767. kissing

  768. my feet.

  769. You did

  770. not anoint

  771. my head

  772. with oil

  773. but she

  774. anointed

  775. my feet

  776. with perfume.

  777. Simon,

  778. there is a

  779. clear difference

  780. in the way

  781. that you

  782. have treated

  783. me and

  784. the way

  785. that this

  786. woman has

  787. treated

  788. me.

  789. So this

  790. morning I

  791. want to ask

  792. you this

  793. question.

  794. How do you

  795. account for

  796. the difference?

  797. Why did

  798. this Simon

  799. respond to

  800. Jesus his

  801. icy hard

  802. way and

  803. this woman

  804. respond to

  805. Jesus overwhelmed?

  806. She didn't

  807. care who was

  808. around.

  809. This is

  810. he.

  811. Jesus spells

  812. it out for us

  813. in verse 7.

  814. He says,

  815. therefore I

  816. tell you her

  817. sins which are

  818. many are

  819. forgiven for

  820. she loved

  821. much but

  822. he who is

  823. forgiven little

  824. loves little

  825. Simon.

  826. And then

  827. Jesus says

  828. to the

  829. woman,

  830. your sins

  831. are forgiven.

  832. Your sins

  833. have been

  834. forgiven,

  835. sister.

  836. To be

  837. forgiven

  838. much results

  839. in loving

  840. much.

  841. To be

  842. forgiven

  843. little results

  844. in loving

  845. little.

  846. Being forgiven

  847. much results

  848. in great

  849. gratitude,

  850. great

  851. thanksgiving.

  852. To be

  853. forgiven

  854. little results

  855. in not

  856. much

  857. gratitude,

  858. not much

  859. thanksgiving.

  860. You see

  861. the issue

  862. here is

  863. forgiveness.

  864. forgiveness.

  865. Specifically,

  866. the realization

  867. that you

  868. need

  869. forgiveness.

  870. The realization

  871. that you

  872. are a

  873. sinner.

  874. This woman

  875. knew she

  876. was a

  877. sinner.

  878. That she

  879. needed to

  880. be forgiven

  881. of her

  882. many sins.

  883. Simon,

  884. not so

  885. much.

  886. If Simon

  887. needed to

  888. be forgiven,

  889. he didn't

  890. need to be

  891. forgiven that

  892. much.

  893. And he was

  894. probably thinking

  895. his own

  896. righteousness

  897. should cover

  898. that anyway.

  899. He didn't

  900. see himself

  901. as a

  902. sinner.

  903. What Simon

  904. failed to

  905. recognize was

  906. that he

  907. was in

  908. debt to

  909. God and

  910. incapable of

  911. paying it.

  912. And it

  913. showed up in

  914. the way he

  915. treated Jesus.

  916. Simon didn't

  917. need a

  918. Savior.

  919. He didn't

  920. see himself

  921. as one

  922. needing to

  923. be saved.

  924. He didn't

  925. see himself

  926. as one who

  927. is in debt

  928. to God

  929. and in

  930. need of

  931. God's

  932. mercy.

  933. His

  934. confidence

  935. was in

  936. his own

  937. self-righteousness.

  938. If you

  939. don't need

  940. forgiveness,

  941. you don't

  942. need Jesus.

  943. And if you

  944. don't need

  945. Jesus,

  946. you treat

  947. him like

  948. Simon did.

  949. You keep

  950. him at

  951. a distance.

  952. Simon was

  953. blinded to

  954. Jesus by

  955. his own

  956. self-righteousness.

  957. He who

  958. is forgiven

  959. little,

  960. loves little.

  961. But if

  962. you know

  963. you are a

  964. sinner,

  965. you know

  966. you need a

  967. Savior.

  968. because you

  969. know you

  970. can't pay

  971. your debt.

  972. You need

  973. Jesus.

  974. And when

  975. you experience

  976. the forgiveness

  977. of Jesus,

  978. the cancellation

  979. that he can

  980. only provide

  981. through his

  982. death on

  983. the cross,

  984. when you

  985. experience that,

  986. you start to

  987. love Jesus

  988. like this

  989. woman,

  990. this prostitute

  991. loved Jesus.

  992. Overwhelmed

  993. with gratitude.

  994. You don't

  995. care what

  996. other people

  997. think.

  998. where Simon

  999. was blinded

  1000. by his

  1001. self-righteousness.

  1002. Those who

  1003. are forgiven

  1004. much are

  1005. blinded to

  1006. what other

  1007. people think

  1008. because your

  1009. gratitude of

  1010. what Jesus

  1011. has done

  1012. for you.

  1013. You don't

  1014. give a rip.

  1015. I'm

  1016. praising

  1017. Jesus.

  1018. The one

  1019. who's forgiven

  1020. much,

  1021. loves much.

  1022. How do

  1023. we respond

  1024. to this?

  1025. How do

  1026. we respond

  1027. to God's

  1028. word this

  1029. morning?

  1030. Well, we

  1031. need to

  1032. realize three

  1033. things.

  1034. The first

  1035. is this.

  1036. We're all

  1037. debtors.

  1038. We're all

  1039. debtors.

  1040. Debtors to

  1041. God.

  1042. Incapable

  1043. of paying

  1044. our debt.

  1045. Our sins

  1046. accumulate

  1047. like debt

  1048. in God's

  1049. eyes and

  1050. we can't

  1051. pay for

  1052. it.

  1053. We all

  1054. need to be

  1055. forgiven of

  1056. our sins

  1057. and we've

  1058. all sinned

  1059. much.

  1060. So let me

  1061. ask you a

  1062. question this

  1063. morning.

  1064. How great

  1065. is your

  1066. debt?

  1067. Are you

  1068. like Simon

  1069. the Pharisee

  1070. who didn't

  1071. think he was

  1072. in debt to

  1073. God?

  1074. He didn't

  1075. think his

  1076. sins amounted

  1077. to much so

  1078. therefore there

  1079. was really no

  1080. need to be

  1081. forgiven?

  1082. Showed up in

  1083. his coolness

  1084. towards Jesus?

  1085. Or are you

  1086. more like the

  1087. woman of the

  1088. city?

  1089. Are you more

  1090. like the

  1091. prostitute?

  1092. Are you

  1093. more like

  1094. this woman

  1095. who was

  1096. thoroughly aware

  1097. of her

  1098. many sins?

  1099. She knew

  1100. she racked

  1101. up so

  1102. much debt

  1103. that there

  1104. was no

  1105. way she

  1106. could pay

  1107. it.

  1108. Her

  1109. many sins

  1110. made her

  1111. desperate.

  1112. Desperate

  1113. for a

  1114. Savior.

  1115. Desperate

  1116. for Jesus.

  1117. Her only

  1118. hope for

  1119. forgiveness

  1120. forgiveness

  1121. was Jesus.

  1122. He had

  1123. forgiven her

  1124. and there

  1125. he is

  1126. sitting at

  1127. the table.

  1128. Jesus

  1129. graciously

  1130. forgave her.

  1131. Your sins

  1132. have been

  1133. forgiven.

  1134. Jesus did

  1135. not forgive

  1136. religious

  1137. Simon

  1138. because Simon

  1139. didn't think

  1140. he needed

  1141. to be

  1142. forgiven.

  1143. Jesus

  1144. pronounced

  1145. forgiveness

  1146. for the

  1147. sinful

  1148. prostitute

  1149. because she

  1150. knew that

  1151. only Jesus

  1152. could forgive

  1153. her.

  1154. What about

  1155. you?

  1156. are you

  1157. aware this

  1158. morning of

  1159. your many

  1160. sins?

  1161. Do you

  1162. need to

  1163. be forgiven?

  1164. We are

  1165. all in debt

  1166. to God.

  1167. Only Jesus

  1168. can forgive

  1169. you.

  1170. It's only

  1171. through his

  1172. payment on

  1173. the cross

  1174. that can

  1175. pay the

  1176. debt of

  1177. our sins.

  1178. This

  1179. morning I

  1180. want you

  1181. to know

  1182. if you

  1183. are in

  1184. here and

  1185. you're

  1186. realizing

  1187. I have

  1188. not been

  1189. forgiven.

  1190. My sins

  1191. stand against

  1192. me.

  1193. This

  1194. morning

  1195. the Savior

  1196. who died

  1197. and then

  1198. was raised

  1199. is offering

  1200. you

  1201. forgiveness

  1202. in full.

  1203. All of

  1204. it.

  1205. Paid.

  1206. He's

  1207. offering it

  1208. to you.

  1209. You know

  1210. how you

  1211. respond?

  1212. You just

  1213. say I'll

  1214. take it.

  1215. I'll

  1216. take it.

  1217. There's

  1218. no way

  1219. you can

  1220. earn it.

  1221. You

  1222. receive it

  1223. by faith

  1224. and then

  1225. you

  1226. experience

  1227. the

  1228. peace

  1229. of being

  1230. forgiven

  1231. much.

  1232. All you

  1233. need to

  1234. do is

  1235. receive

  1236. this

  1237. gift

  1238. by

  1239. faith.

  1240. The

  1241. second

  1242. realization

  1243. is for

  1244. those who

  1245. have already

  1246. been forgiven.

  1247. For those

  1248. of us who

  1249. have already

  1250. received

  1251. this gift

  1252. by faith.

  1253. For those

  1254. of us who

  1255. have

  1256. recognized

  1257. our

  1258. sinfulness

  1259. and realized

  1260. we needed

  1261. a Savior

  1262. and maybe

  1263. a month ago

  1264. or years ago

  1265. you put your

  1266. faith in

  1267. Jesus.

  1268. You were

  1269. forgiven

  1270. much.

  1271. But I don't

  1272. know about

  1273. you.

  1274. But there

  1275. seems to

  1276. be a

  1277. tendency

  1278. for those

  1279. who have

  1280. been

  1281. forgiven

  1282. to get

  1283. forgetful.

  1284. Those

  1285. of us

  1286. who have

  1287. been

  1288. forgiven

  1289. we can

  1290. slowly

  1291. become

  1292. like

  1293. Simon

  1294. trusting

  1295. in our

  1296. own

  1297. righteousness

  1298. while

  1299. cooling

  1300. towards

  1301. Jesus.

  1302. Because

  1303. what can

  1304. happen is

  1305. we start

  1306. thinking we

  1307. don't need

  1308. Jesus

  1309. anymore.

  1310. He's

  1311. forgiven

  1312. us.

  1313. Big thing

  1314. done.

  1315. There can

  1316. be this

  1317. subtle yet

  1318. gradual

  1319. shift

  1320. after you're

  1321. saved.

  1322. A shift

  1323. from the

  1324. focus on

  1325. being on

  1326. Jesus to

  1327. coming off

  1328. of Jesus

  1329. and coming

  1330. on to

  1331. yourself.

  1332. Oh

  1333. forgiven

  1334. brother and

  1335. sinner who is

  1336. forgetful.

  1337. And I'm

  1338. preaching this

  1339. to myself

  1340. as much

  1341. as anybody

  1342. else in

  1343. this room.

  1344. You need

  1345. Jesus just

  1346. as much

  1347. today as

  1348. you did

  1349. the first

  1350. day you

  1351. believed in

  1352. him.

  1353. You need

  1354. him.

  1355. You'll

  1356. never outgrow

  1357. him.

  1358. You've been

  1359. forgiven.

  1360. That's where

  1361. you live.

  1362. In his

  1363. forgiveness

  1364. of you.

  1365. It's all

  1366. about him.

  1367. he is

  1368. the vine.

  1369. We are

  1370. the branches.

  1371. Apart from

  1372. him we can

  1373. do nothing.

  1374. We need

  1375. him.

  1376. And so

  1377. if you're

  1378. in the

  1379. room and

  1380. you've been

  1381. forgiven but

  1382. you get

  1383. forgetful,

  1384. remember how

  1385. much Jesus

  1386. has forgiven

  1387. you.

  1388. Do you

  1389. remember what

  1390. he's forgiven

  1391. you of?

  1392. How much

  1393. he has

  1394. forgiven you?

  1395. Maybe you're

  1396. in the

  1397. room and

  1398. you've been

  1399. raised in a

  1400. Christian home

  1401. and you're

  1402. like I

  1403. became a

  1404. Christian when

  1405. I was

  1406. four.

  1407. I don't

  1408. remember

  1409. that.

  1410. Turn to

  1411. Ephesians 2

  1412. 1-3 and

  1413. ask God to

  1414. impress upon

  1415. you what

  1416. you've been

  1417. forgiven from.

  1418. What he's

  1419. delivered you

  1420. from.

  1421. Remember how

  1422. much Jesus

  1423. has forgiven

  1424. you and

  1425. then express

  1426. your gratitude

  1427. to him.

  1428. You see

  1429. gratitude is

  1430. the result of

  1431. being forgiven

  1432. not because.

  1433. There's one

  1434. more thing I

  1435. want you to

  1436. see here.

  1437. It's this.

  1438. The third

  1439. realization is

  1440. who this

  1441. Jesus of

  1442. Nazareth is.

  1443. Look at

  1444. verse 49.

  1445. After Jesus

  1446. says to the

  1447. prostitute your

  1448. sins are

  1449. forgiven,

  1450. have been

  1451. forgiven,

  1452. those around

  1453. the table

  1454. began to

  1455. say to

  1456. themselves who

  1457. is this

  1458. who even

  1459. forgives sins.

  1460. You see

  1461. what the

  1462. people around

  1463. the table

  1464. knew that

  1465. you may

  1466. not know

  1467. is this,

  1468. that only

  1469. God can

  1470. forgive people

  1471. of their

  1472. sins.

  1473. Ultimately

  1474. when we

  1475. sin,

  1476. we sin

  1477. against God

  1478. and only

  1479. God can

  1480. forgive our

  1481. sins against

  1482. Him.

  1483. So when

  1484. Jesus says

  1485. to this

  1486. woman,

  1487. your sins

  1488. are forgiven,

  1489. do you know

  1490. who he's

  1491. claiming to

  1492. be?

  1493. He's

  1494. claiming to

  1495. be God.

  1496. He's

  1497. more than

  1498. a prophet.

  1499. He's

  1500. God in

  1501. the flesh.

  1502. And he

  1503. died for

  1504. sinners like

  1505. you and

  1506. me.

  1507. His

  1508. death on

  1509. the cross

  1510. is the

  1511. only way

  1512. our debt

  1513. can be

  1514. paid in

  1515. full.

  1516. And his

  1517. resurrection

  1518. proves his

  1519. payment was

  1520. accepted.

  1521. Who is

  1522. Jesus?

  1523. He's God

  1524. in the flesh

  1525. and he's

  1526. the only

  1527. one who

  1528. can forgive

  1529. your sins

  1530. because he

  1531. is God.

  1532. It's all

  1533. about him.

  1534. We've

  1535. much to be

  1536. grateful for

  1537. this Thanksgiving,

  1538. don't we?

  1539. We live in a

  1540. wonderful country.

  1541. We've got

  1542. wonderful freedoms.

  1543. But this

  1544. Thanksgiving,

  1545. when you sit

  1546. down for

  1547. dinner,

  1548. think about

  1549. the one who

  1550. reclined a

  1551. table.

  1552. we've got a

  1553. wonderful country.

  1554. We have a

  1555. more wonderful

  1556. Savior.

  1557. We have

  1558. many freedoms,

  1559. but the

  1560. greatest freedom

  1561. of all is

  1562. being forgiven

  1563. of all your

  1564. sin.

  1565. And the

  1566. result,

  1567. gratitude.

  1568. Let's pray.

  1569. Lord Jesus,

  1570. you are

  1571. awesome.

  1572. like the

  1573. prostitute,

  1574. God,

  1575. we rejoice

  1576. in you.

  1577. And we are

  1578. drawn to you,

  1579. Lord Jesus.

  1580. We want to be

  1581. around you.

  1582. God,

  1583. would you

  1584. continue to

  1585. stir up

  1586. gratitude in

  1587. our hearts?

  1588. Would you

  1589. remind us

  1590. over and

  1591. over of

  1592. being forgiven

  1593. much?

  1594. It's in your

  1595. name we pray.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Amen.

  1599. Amen.

  1600. Amen.

  1601. Amen.
