  1. I thought because the Christmas story is so familiar, we would look at it perhaps in a new way to see if we can gain some new insights about it.

  2. There are the first three Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

  3. Strangely enough, in the Gospel of Mark, nothing is said about the Christmas story.

  4. No shepherds in the field, no wise men coming from the east, no star of David.

  5. None of these things.

  6. The Gospel of Mark begins with Jesus' ministry as an adult.

  7. He is baptized by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit comes upon him, and he immediately engages in ministry.

  8. So in that sense, perhaps the first 30 years or whatever are not mentioned at all.

  9. Well, when you come to the Gospel of John, none of that is there either.

  10. And then John introduces this Greek word logos.

  11. And if you know anything about Greek philosophy, the word logos is a technical term.

  12. But it is Matthew and Mark that give us the Christmas story.

  13. So let me tell you a story here.

  14. And the story is this.

  15. Once upon a time, there was a really evil king.

  16. This evil king felt very threatened about his position and power.

  17. So because he was very threatened, he decided to get rid of what is causing him threat.

  18. So he decided to kill the children.

  19. One of those children escaped in Egypt.

  20. And later on, this child came back and became the savior of his people.

  21. Now comes the difficult question.

  22. Whose story am I telling?

  23. Is it Moses?

  24. Is it Moses?

  25. There was an evil pharaoh who was afraid what might happen to Egypt if Egypt is attacked or invaded by the Libyans.

  26. And so not wanting to fight against the Libyans while feeling insecure about what the Hebrews will do.

  27. Worried that he would have to fight against Libya and slaves at the same time.

  28. He decided to eliminate or to reduce the danger of the slaves by having the boys killed.

  29. And yet Moses escapes and floats in the river and is taken by Pharaoh's daughter.

  30. Later on, he kills an Egyptian and then escapes to the desert and comes back after he encounters God at the burning bush.

  31. So it looks like I'm telling you the story about Moses.

  32. But think about it this way.

  33. There was an evil king named Herod who was not Jewish.

  34. He was Edomian and he was a fairly paranoid king.

  35. And so he hears the good news or he is maybe for him the bad news.

  36. Where is he born king of the Jews?

  37. Because we saw his star.

  38. And he decides that the king of Jews is a danger to him.

  39. So he asks the wise men, the magi, to find where he is so he could go worship the king.

  40. All along he is planning on killing the child.

  41. The family is warned.

  42. Joseph is warned.

  43. They escape to Egypt.

  44. They stay in Egypt until Herod dies.

  45. And then after Herod dies, they return to Israel, to the promised land.

  46. And Jesus becomes the future reformer and savior of his people.

  47. So was my story about Moses or was it about Jesus?

  48. The interesting thing to notice is that Matthew writes the story of Jesus using the framework of Moses.

  49. Now this is not a coincidence.

  50. Matthew is trying to make a point that just as Moses was the deliverer of his people,

  51. just as Moses was used by God to save his people,

  52. Jesus is also going to be used by God to save his people too.

  53. So the lines are parallel.

  54. They both tell of a future deliverer who is going to come and rescue his people.

  55. Matthew wants us to see Jesus as a second Moses, a second savior,

  56. but of course with a much more greater task, namely to save the whole world and not just the Hebrews in Egypt.

  57. That is one story.

  58. Let me tell you another story.

  59. Once upon a time, there were an old man and woman, his wife.

  60. They were advanced in age and she was also barren.

  61. And consequently, they didn't have any children.

  62. So God sends them a special messenger to announce the birth of the child.

  63. The father doesn't believe the messenger.

  64. And nevertheless, God says that the child is going to be born.

  65. And the good news is announced to them.

  66. What story am I telling you now?

  67. Well, if you are in Genesis 17 and 18,

  68. I'm telling you the story about Abraham and Sarah.

  69. An old couple, barren wife, no child,

  70. and yet the child will bring them great joy.

  71. And Abraham doesn't believe and he laughs.

  72. And Sarah doesn't believe and he laughs.

  73. And so finally, when they have a child, they name him Laughter.

  74. Which means God gets the last laugh.

  75. So the moral of the story is, don't laugh when God is serious.

  76. And yet, Abraham hears the good news.

  77. So it could be that I'm talking to you about Abraham.

  78. But maybe it is not.

  79. Maybe it's Zechariah.

  80. And if you look at the Gospel of Luke, chapter 1, 25,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  81. you see the same things.

  82. So Matthew wants us to think about Moses

  83. and his calling.

  84. And Luke wants us to think about Abraham and his calling.

  85. Both of them are saying you will gain an insight

  86. if you think about Jesus as somehow analogous to Moses

  87. or analogous to Abraham.

  88. If Moses and Jesus were great saviors of their people

  89. who were in bondage, what's the point of Luke?

  90. Why mention Abraham?

  91. Because the Abraham story begins basically in Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  92. Before that, we have, first of all, a history of the world.

  93. And it's a very bad history.

  94. And without going into all the bad history

  95. that happened in the first 12 chapters,

  96. you only need to remember the great flood

  97. where God is so upset with the sin of the world

  98. that he decides to wipe out the human race

  99. except for Noah and his family.

  100. And then the other major event is the Tower of Babel

  101. and all the families of the earth.

  102. And so what happens in chapter 12

  103. is that God stops discussing the history of the world

  104. and now focuses on one family and one person.

  105. There is a shifting from universal history

  106. to very specific history.

  107. And it's the history of Abraham

  108. and his descendants from whom will come Jesus.

  109. So Luke wants us to see

  110. that Jesus is also God narrowing his focus

  111. in terms of salvation,

  112. but beyond that,

  113. that Jesus is the fulfillment of the promises

  114. made in the history of Abraham.

  115. So the two evangelists are trying to tell us

  116. think about Moses,

  117. think about Abraham,

  118. and then you're really ready to understand

  119. who Jesus is.

  120. When you read the Gospel of Luke,

    Luke 1:5–25

  121. chapter 1, verses 5 through 25,

  122. there are several things that really stand out.

  123. Let me point about five of them.

  124. So if you're taking notes,

  125. take good notes.

  126. I want to mention five of them.

  127. The first one is that Luke

  128. constantly keeps referring to the Holy Spirit.

  129. So in chapter 1, verse 15,

  130. John the Baptist will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  131. Verse 35,

  132. Mary will conceive by the Holy Spirit.

  133. Chapter 1, verse 41,

  134. Elizabeth, her relative,

  135. is filled with the Holy Spirit.

  136. Verse 67,

  137. Zechariah is filled with the Holy Spirit.

  138. Simeon, in chapter 2,

  139. is filled with the Holy Spirit.

  140. There is this constant reference to the Holy Spirit.

  141. Why is Luke making this point

  142. about the Holy Spirit?

  143. Because of a very important thing.

  144. He wants to make a very important point.

  145. The last prophet in the Old Testament

  146. was Malachi,

  147. and Malachi was approximately 430 B.C.

  148. After Malachi,

  149. all the rabbis recognized

  150. that God didn't give us prophets,

  151. he didn't send messengers,

  152. he didn't send his word,

  153. that God, in a matter of speaking,

  154. was silent.

  155. Rabbis call that the bat kol,

  156. or the daughter of the voice,

  157. in English.

  158. But the point is,

  159. is that for approximately,

  160. God hasn't said a thing.

  161. God is silent.

  162. And,

  163. if the last thing that he said was wonderful,

  164. it's okay to be silent,

  165. but take a look at the last thing

  166. that God said before he went silent.

  167. Look at Malachi,

  168. the last chapter,

  169. the last verse.

  170. The last sentence,

  171. or else,

  172. I will come and strike the land with a curse.

  173. Shape up,

  174. or I will strike the land with a curse.

  175. And that's the end of the story.

  176. And we're all wondering,

  177. what happened after that?

  178. Is he going to come and strike the land with a curse?

  179. Or is the nation going to repent?

  180. Where are we?

  181. And what he is saying now,

  182. what Luke is saying,

  183. is God,

  184. who has been silent,

  185. now is speaking again.

  186. God,

  187. who was in some ways distant,

  188. and remote,

  189. and aloof,

  190. is back involved in our lives.

  191. And not only has he given us the Holy Spirit,

  192. as all these five different individuals illustrate,

  193. but that he is speaking.

  194. And the angel is speaking to Zechariah,

  195. the angel is speaking to Mary,

  196. Simeon is filled by the Holy Spirit,

  197. and God is speaking again.

  198. God is not far away.

  199. God is near.

  200. The God who was silent has broken the silent.

  201. He has returned,

  202. and he is going to talk to us about something.

  203. Well,

  204. he has a message to talk.

  205. He wants to convey a message.

  206. And look what Luke does.

  207. I know he is describing it correctly,

  208. but I wonder if that is really what happened.

  209. So,

  210. verse 8.

  211. Once,

  212. when Zechariah's division was on duty,

  213. and he was serving as priest before God,

  214. he was chosen by lot,

  215. according to the custom of the priesthood,

  216. to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

  217. And you say,

  218. oh,

  219. what's the significance of that?

  220. The significance of that is that there were

  221. 20,000 priests

  222. at the time of Jesus.

  223. 20,000 priests.

  224. Because there was such a large number of priests,

  225. they divided them into 24 companies or divisions.

  226. So,

  227. so,

  228. so company number one,

  229. company number two,

  230. company number three,

  231. company number four.

  232. And,

  233. because there were far more priests

  234. than there was a need in the temple,

  235. each company would only serve two weeks in the temple.

  236. their job was only two weeks long.

  237. One week in the spring

  238. and one week in the fall.

  239. Only two weeks.

  240. And each week they only needed two persons.

  241. Which means,

  242. most of them

  243. never entered into the holy place

  244. to appear before God.

  245. if you

  246. was the one who was chosen,

  247. if you were the one who was chosen,

  248. if,

  249. if it was your turn,

  250. this is like hitting the lottery.

  251. This is big time.

  252. And it's more than winning money.

  253. You get to appear before God

  254. and to,

  255. and to add oil

  256. to the candelabra or the lamp stand.

  257. So,

  258. out of 20,000,

  259. perhaps 3%

  260. made it.

  261. You remember the parable

  262. of the Good Samaritan.

  263. There were priests

  264. who came by

  265. and went around him.

  266. Many people have speculated,

  267. why did the priests

  268. go around him?

  269. Some have speculated

  270. that since they were going down

  271. to Jerusalem,

  272. if they took care

  273. of a corpse,

  274. they would be unclean

  275. and they would disqualify

  276. from serving in the temple.

  277. And if it was

  278. once in a lifetime

  279. chance,

  280. you know,

  281. twice a year

  282. that you might have that chance,

  283. you wouldn't ruin it

  284. with doing something like that.

  285. So,

  286. Luke says,

  287. they cast Lot

  288. and it was Zachariah's turn.

  289. Well,

  290. God wants to talk to him.

  291. There are lots of ways

  292. for God to talk to him.

  293. You know what he could do?

  294. He could give him

  295. a dream.

  296. Other people

  297. have had dreams.

  298. Joseph had a dream.

  299. Pharaoh had a dream.

  300. Jacob had a dream.

  301. Or,

  302. if a dream

  303. is not good enough,

  304. then,

  305. you have a vision.

  306. Isaiah says,

  307. in the year

  308. that King Uzziah died,

  309. I saw the Lord

  310. sitting on a throne.

  311. So,

  312. you have visions.

  313. But,

  314. no.

  315. No dreams.

  316. No visions.

  317. It's his turn.

  318. He's probably higher

  319. than a kite.

  320. This is my once

  321. in a lifetime.

  322. And he's an old man.

  323. He's not going to come down

  324. to Jerusalem too many times.

  325. He's going to be

  326. in retirement

  327. home soon.

  328. So,

  329. maybe this is the last year.

  330. Maybe this is the second

  331. to the last year.

  332. And he,

  333. and it is his turn.

  334. I mean,

  335. how more fantastic

  336. can it be

  337. as the crowning event

  338. of all of his life?

  339. And he goes in

  340. and an angel

  341. is waiting for him.

  342. But if,

  343. what if it was

  344. somebody else

  345. who went in?

  346. that what is

  347. the angel going to say?

  348. Oops,

  349. wrong person.

  350. I gotta go back.

  351. Lord,

  352. can you please

  353. send him

  354. so I can?

  355. Yes,

  356. it was casting lot.

  357. But was it

  358. really coincidence?

  359. Was it just

  360. rolling the dice?

  361. God is waiting

  362. for him.

  363. And God

  364. is waiting for him

  365. because God

  366. has a really

  367. important

  368. message for him.

  369. and the message

  370. of course

  371. involves the birth

  372. of John

  373. the Baptist,

  374. his son,

  375. and ultimately

  376. Jesus.

  377. It is very

  378. interesting to notice

  379. that it is not

  380. the parents

  381. who name

  382. their children.

  383. It is

  384. God

  385. who names

  386. the children.

  387. It is God

  388. who gives them

  389. names.

  390. you know.

  391. Knowing

  392. what I know

  393. about my

  394. own children

  395. now,

  396. I'm not sure

  397. that I would have

  398. given them

  399. their names.

  400. I don't know

  401. if these names

  402. really fit

  403. their personalities.

  404. But when

  405. names are given,

  406. it is sometimes

  407. given as a hope.

  408. Maybe this is

  409. what will happen.

  410. So

  411. Noah is

  412. named

  413. Noah

  414. rather than

  415. Robert.

  416. And why

  417. Noah?

  418. Because

  419. maybe

  420. he is the

  421. one who

  422. will give

  423. us rest

  424. from our

  425. work.

  426. So they're

  427. hoping maybe

  428. this is the

  429. promised Messiah.

  430. Well,

  431. he wasn't.

  432. You know.

  433. So the parents

  434. sometimes get it

  435. right,

  436. sometimes get it

  437. wrong.

  438. If you want

  439. a funny name,

  440. if you want

  441. to inflict

  442. a name

  443. on your

  444. children

  445. or your

  446. grandchildren,

  447. let me

  448. recommend one

  449. from Isaiah

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  450. chapter 8,

  451. Maher

  452. Shalal

  453. Khashbaz,

  454. which means

  455. quickly to the

  456. plunder,

  457. speedily to the

  458. spoils of war.

  459. We're going

  460. to be

  461. invaded,

  462. defeated,

  463. and plundered.

  464. Maybe one

  465. of the,

  466. maybe if we

  467. have a

  468. president in the

  469. White House

  470. who has a

  471. child,

  472. maybe they'll

  473. name him

  474. Maher

  475. Shalal

  476. Khashbaz,

  477. or maybe the

  478. opposition party,

  479. I don't know.

  480. But that's not a

  481. good name to name

  482. somebody.

  483. Maher

  484. Shalal

  485. Khashbaz.

  486. There is also

  487. Shi'ar

  488. Yashuv,

  489. a remnant

  490. will return,

  491. or a remnant

  492. will repent.

  493. Of course,

  494. the wonderful

  495. one is Emmanuel.

  496. God is with

  497. us,

  498. and he is.

  499. In that case,

  500. they got it

  501. right.

  502. God got it

  503. right,

  504. which doesn't

  505. surprise me very

  506. much.

  507. But God

  508. decides to

  509. name those

  510. two boys

  511. John and

  512. Jesus.

  513. John is

  514. Johannan.

  515. We recognize

  516. it in English

  517. or in German

  518. in names like

  519. Johann Sebastian

  520. Bach,

  521. or Johannes

  522. Brahms.

  523. we recognize

  524. it in female

  525. names like

  526. Ann or

  527. Anna,

  528. the A-N-N,

  529. the Ann or

  530. Anna or

  531. Hanan or

  532. Hannah or

  533. things like

  534. that.

  535. All of these

  536. words are

  537. related to

  538. Yohanan,

  539. and Yohanan

  540. means the

  541. grace of

  542. God.

  543. So this

  544. act of

  545. salvation

  546. is going

  547. to give

  548. God the

  549. setting to

  550. show his

  551. great grace.

  552. we are

  553. going to

  554. see God's

  555. grace in

  556. this salvation,

  557. in what is

  558. about to

  559. happen.

  560. And the

  561. other name

  562. is Jesus,

  563. which is

  564. Yeshua.

  565. And Yeshua

  566. means,

  567. is related to

  568. Isaiah,

  569. Hosea,

  570. Joshua,

  571. and it

  572. means salvation.

  573. salvation.

  574. There are

  575. four words

  576. for salvation

  577. in Hebrew.

  578. This one

  579. happens to

  580. emphasize

  581. confrontation

  582. between God

  583. and his

  584. enemies,

  585. in which

  586. God will

  587. defeat his

  588. enemies.

  589. So salvation,

  590. not by

  591. paying a

  592. ransom,

  593. that would

  594. be

  595. patha

  596. and ga'al.

  597. This is

  598. more like

  599. a confrontation.

  600. It is

  601. interesting

  602. that at

  603. the Mount

  604. of

  605. Transfiguration,

  606. both

  607. Moses and

  608. Elijah

  609. appeared.

  610. Moses,

  611. who had

  612. faced and

  613. defeated the

  614. Egyptian gods,

  615. and Elijah,

  616. who faced and

  617. defeated the

  618. Phoenician gods.

  619. And God

  620. is saying,

  621. you know,

  622. that was

  623. first round,

  624. second round,

  625. wait till

  626. I see,

  627. you know,

  628. wait and see

  629. what I'm

  630. going to

  631. do.

  632. You know,

  633. you're

  634. going to

  635. look like

  636. amateurs,

  637. you know,

  638. back in

  639. kindergarten.

  640. You know,

  641. by the time

  642. I'm finished,

  643. you'll really

  644. see what

  645. defeating my

  646. enemies will

  647. look like.

  648. And so

  649. what we

  650. are going

  651. to see

  652. is God's

  653. triumph over

  654. his enemies,

  655. which is an

  656. expression of

  657. his grace

  658. to us,

  659. to save

  660. us.

  661. That is

  662. what God

  663. is going

  664. to preach.

  665. This is what

  666. God is

  667. preaching.

  668. That

  669. he is

  670. going to

  671. be John.

  672. He is

  673. going to

  674. be the

  675. agent of

  676. grace.

  677. He is

  678. compared to

  679. Elijah.

  680. Why

  681. Elijah?

  682. Well,

  683. because

  684. Elijah

  685. confronted

  686. Jezebel,

  687. who was a

  688. queen,

  689. and told her,

  690. you are

  691. wrong.

  692. Baal is

  693. not the

  694. supreme

  695. deity.

  696. God is

  697. the supreme

  698. deity.

  699. And in

  700. two contests,

  701. defeated

  702. the

  703. Phoenician

  704. Baal,

  705. Baal

  706. Zebel.

  707. And what

  708. is going

  709. to happen

  710. with Jesus

  711. is that

  712. he is

  713. going to

  714. confront

  715. Satan.

  716. And he

  717. is going

  718. to defeat

  719. him.

  720. king.

  721. But John

  722. the Baptist

  723. is going

  724. to confront

  725. king

  726. Herod,

  727. as you

  728. will see

  729. later on.

  730. So this

  731. brave man

  732. who is not

  733. afraid to

  734. stand up in

  735. front of

  736. kings and

  737. say,

  738. you are

  739. wrong.

  740. You are

  741. disobeying

  742. God.

  743. That is

  744. that strong

  745. stuff that

  746. God is

  747. going to

  748. put in

  749. John.

  750. So God

  751. is going

  752. to give

  753. us a

  754. great

  755. salvation

  756. of his

  757. triumph

  758. that would

  759. reflect his

  760. great grace,

  761. John and

  762. Jesus.

  763. But I

  764. want you

  765. to turn

  766. to chapter

  767. 1 in

  768. Luke,

  769. verse 17,

  770. because that

  771. is a

  772. very,

  773. very

  774. important

  775. verse.

  776. There are

  777. two things

  778. there I

  779. want you

  780. to see.

  781. Please do

  782. not miss

  783. chapter 1,

  784. verse 17.

  785. He is

  786. describing

  787. the

  788. ministry

  789. of John

  790. the Baptist

  791. and he

  792. says,

  793. many of

  794. the people

  795. of Israel,

  796. verse 16,

  797. sorry,

  798. verse 16,

  799. many of

  800. the people

  801. of Israel

  802. he will

  803. bring back

  804. to the

  805. Lord their

  806. God and

  807. he will

  808. go on

  809. before the

  810. Lord in

  811. the spirit

  812. and power

  813. of Elijah

  814. to turn

  815. the hearts

  816. of the

  817. fathers to

  818. their

  819. children and

  820. the disobedient

  821. to the

  822. wisdom of

  823. the righteous

  824. to make

  825. ready a

  826. people prepared

  827. for the

  828. Lord.

  829. Let's take

  830. a look at

  831. the first

  832. part and

  833. then we'll

  834. take a look

  835. at the

  836. second part.

  837. The first

  838. part in

  839. verse 17,

  840. he will

  841. go on

  842. before the

  843. Lord in

  844. the spirit

  845. and power

  846. of Elijah

  847. to turn

  848. the hearts

  849. of the

  850. fathers to

  851. their

  852. children.

  853. In case

  854. you're not

  855. familiar with

  856. that verse,

  857. please go

  858. back to

  859. Malachi,

  860. the very

  861. last chapter

  862. in the

  863. Old Testament.

  864. we saw

  865. that the

  866. Old Testament

  867. ends with

  868. the word

  869. curse,

  870. but look

  871. at Malachi

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  872. chapter 4.

  873. Look at

  874. chapter 4

  875. verse 5.

  876. See,

  877. I will

  878. send you

  879. the prophet

  880. Elijah

  881. before the

  882. great and

  883. dreadful day

  884. of the

  885. Lord,

  886. before that

  887. great and

  888. dreadful day

  889. of the

  890. Lord comes.

  891. He will

  892. turn the

  893. hearts of

  894. the fathers

  895. to their

  896. children,

  897. and the

  898. hearts of

  899. the children

  900. to their

  901. fathers,

  902. or else

  903. I will

  904. come and

  905. spike the

  906. land before

  907. the curse.

  908. Jesus makes

  909. it clear that

  910. when he says

  911. Elijah, he

  912. doesn't mean

  913. literally Elijah,

  914. and the

  915. angel makes

  916. it clear that

  917. he will come

  918. in the spirit

  919. and power of

  920. Elijah,

  921. Elijah,

  922. but look

  923. what he

  924. will do.

  925. Verse 6,

  926. he will

  927. turn the

  928. hearts of

  929. the fathers

  930. to their

  931. children.

  932. So,

  933. John the

  934. Baptist is

  935. going to

  936. prepare the

  937. way by

  938. turning the

  939. hearts of

  940. the fathers

  941. to their

  942. children,

  943. and the

  944. hearts of

  945. the children

  946. to their

  947. fathers.

  948. But,

  949. something else

  950. in verse

  951. 17,

  952. something else

  953. in verse

  954. 17.

  955. To make

  956. ready,

  957. the last

  958. part of

  959. verse 17

  960. in Luke

  961. 1,

  962. to make

  963. ready a

  964. people

  965. prepared

  966. for the

  967. Lord.

  968. A people

  969. prepared

  970. for the

  971. Lord.

  972. Where does

  973. that come

  974. from?

  975. It comes

  976. from Isaiah

    Isaiah 40:3

  977. chapter 40

  978. verse 3.

  979. This is an

  980. extremely

  981. important

  982. passage.

  983. If you're

  984. going to

  985. take a

  986. nap,

  987. now is

  988. not the

  989. time to

  990. do it.

  991. Chapter

  992. 40,

  993. which begins

  994. with,

  995. comfort ye,

  996. comfort ye,

  997. my people.

  998. How many

  999. of us have

  1000. heard Handel's

  1001. Messiah?

  1002. A voice

  1003. of one,

  1004. verse 3,

  1005. Isaiah 40

    Isaiah 40:3

  1006. verse 3,

  1007. a voice

  1008. of one

  1009. calling

  1010. in the

  1011. desert,

  1012. prepare the

  1013. way for

  1014. the Lord.

  1015. Make

  1016. straight in

  1017. the wilderness

  1018. a highway

  1019. for our

  1020. God,

  1021. preparing

  1022. the way

  1023. for the

  1024. Lord.

  1025. That

  1026. passage

  1027. is from

  1028. Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1029. chapter 40,

  1030. but more

  1031. importantly,

  1032. it's from

  1033. Luke

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  1034. chapter 3.

  1035. So go

  1036. back to

  1037. Luke

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  1038. chapter 3.

  1039. chapter 3,

  1040. verse 4,

  1041. Luke 3,

    Luke 3:4

  1042. verse 4,

  1043. as is

  1044. written in

  1045. the book

  1046. of the

  1047. words of

  1048. Isaiah the

  1049. prophet.

  1050. He is

  1051. telling us

  1052. where he's

  1053. getting it

  1054. from.

  1055. It's from

  1056. Isaiah.

  1057. Isaiah,

  1058. a voice of

  1059. one calling

  1060. in the

  1061. desert,

  1062. prepare the

  1063. way for

  1064. the Lord,

  1065. make

  1066. straight

  1067. paths

  1068. for him.

  1069. And

  1070. the

  1071. angel

  1072. says that

  1073. John the

  1074. Baptist is

  1075. going to

  1076. prepare the

  1077. way of

  1078. the Lord.

  1079. And so

  1080. as that

  1081. is done,

  1082. the Lord

  1083. will then

  1084. be the

  1085. next great

  1086. event.

  1087. This is a

  1088. preview.

  1089. This is the

  1090. preparation.

  1091. This is the

  1092. overture.

  1093. this is the

  1094. beginning.

  1095. But it is a

  1096. very important

  1097. beginning.

  1098. That's the

  1099. big picture,

  1100. God's salvation

  1101. for the world.

  1102. But God is

  1103. also interested

  1104. in small

  1105. things.

  1106. Not just

  1107. big things,

  1108. but small

  1109. things.

  1110. Please turn

  1111. to Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  1112. chapter 1.

  1113. And this

  1114. is where

  1115. it might

  1116. apply to you

  1117. on a

  1118. personal level.

  1119. As opposed

  1120. to this

  1121. huge

  1122. salvation

  1123. of the

  1124. whole

  1125. world.

  1126. John 3

  1127. 16,

  1128. God so

  1129. loved the

  1130. world.

  1131. Well,

  1132. what about

  1133. me?

  1134. If he does

  1135. love the

  1136. whole world,

  1137. does that

  1138. mean me

  1139. as part

  1140. of the

  1141. world or

  1142. as me

  1143. individually?

  1144. Does God

  1145. know who

  1146. I am?

  1147. Does he

  1148. care?

  1149. And then

  1150. in Luke

    Luke 1:23

  1151. chapter 1

  1152. verse 23,

  1153. when his

  1154. time of

  1155. service was

  1156. completed,

  1157. he returned

  1158. home.

  1159. After this,

  1160. his wife

  1161. Elizabeth

  1162. became

  1163. pregnant

  1164. and for

  1165. five months

  1166. remained in

  1167. seclusion.

  1168. The Lord

  1169. had done

  1170. this for

  1171. me,

  1172. she said.

  1173. In these

  1174. days,

  1175. he has

  1176. shown his

  1177. favor and

  1178. taken away

  1179. my disgrace

  1180. among the

  1181. people.

  1182. His wife

  1183. was barren.

  1184. She felt

  1185. like an

  1186. outsider.

  1187. When other

  1188. mothers took

  1189. their kids to

  1190. the park,

  1191. she didn't

  1192. have a

  1193. child to

  1194. take to

  1195. the park.

  1196. When other

  1197. mothers

  1198. discussed,

  1199. what is your

  1200. kid learning

  1201. in kindergarten,

  1202. she didn't

  1203. have a

  1204. kid to

  1205. go to

  1206. kindergarten

  1207. to tell

  1208. them what

  1209. he is

  1210. learning.

  1211. She felt

  1212. an outsider.

  1213. Psychologically,

  1214. you're feeling

  1215. like I

  1216. have failed.

  1217. I need to

  1218. be a

  1219. mother.

  1220. I speak

  1221. from experience.

  1222. My best

  1223. friend,

  1224. my best

  1225. friend in

  1226. college was

  1227. married and

  1228. for ten

  1229. years they

  1230. tried and

  1231. didn't have a

  1232. child.

  1233. She felt

  1234. more and

  1235. more excluded.

  1236. We're going

  1237. to go buy

  1238. clothes for

  1239. our children.

  1240. What's she

  1241. going to do?

  1242. We're going

  1243. to go have

  1244. our children

  1245. immunized.

  1246. What's she

  1247. going to

  1248. do?

  1249. For ten

  1250. years she

  1251. was barren

  1252. and she

  1253. felt like an

  1254. outsider.

  1255. Her best

  1256. friends tried

  1257. not to make

  1258. her feel

  1259. like an

  1260. outsider but

  1261. she felt.

  1262. Well, it's

  1263. bad enough

  1264. psychologically

  1265. to feel an

  1266. outsider.

  1267. It is

  1268. worse when

  1269. the teachers

  1270. of the law

  1271. put their

  1272. burdens on

  1273. you.

  1274. There's a

  1275. rabbinic

  1276. statement that

  1277. said several

  1278. groups of

  1279. people are

  1280. cursed.

  1281. I disagree

  1282. with them

  1283. completely.

  1284. I'm not

  1285. reciting this

  1286. because I

  1287. agree.

  1288. I'm

  1289. quoting this

  1290. to help

  1291. you understand

  1292. what she

  1293. was going

  1294. through but

  1295. I think

  1296. they are

  1297. really,

  1298. really wrong.

  1299. The first,

  1300. the most

  1301. cursed people

  1302. by God

  1303. were single

  1304. people which

  1305. I know

  1306. cannot possibly

  1307. be true for

  1308. all the fun

  1309. that my

  1310. students have

  1311. at Trinity

  1312. which reflects

  1313. in all the

  1314. bad grades

  1315. that they

  1316. get on

  1317. the test

  1318. because they

  1319. are partying

  1320. and not

  1321. studying.

  1322. So, the

  1323. first group

  1324. cursed people

  1325. are the

  1326. single.

  1327. The second

  1328. cursed group

  1329. are those

  1330. who do not

  1331. have children,

  1332. those who

  1333. are married

  1334. but have no

  1335. children.

  1336. children.

  1337. As a matter

  1338. of fact,

  1339. rabbis

  1340. said that

  1341. if a

  1342. woman is

  1343. barren,

  1344. her husband

  1345. can divorce

  1346. her because

  1347. she is not

  1348. allowing him

  1349. to obey the

  1350. commandment.

  1351. The first

  1352. great commandment,

  1353. be fruitful

  1354. and multiply

  1355. and fill the

  1356. whole earth.

  1357. So, a

  1358. barren woman

  1359. is under a

  1360. special curse,

  1361. said the

  1362. rabbis.

  1363. And so,

  1364. you feel

  1365. that religious

  1366. people,

  1367. at least

  1368. knowledgeable

  1369. people,

  1370. think you're

  1371. under a

  1372. curse and

  1373. you feel a

  1374. little bit

  1375. ostracized from

  1376. society, you

  1377. feel a little

  1378. bit alone and

  1379. you're getting

  1380. old and you

  1381. are asking

  1382. yourself,

  1383. in my old

  1384. age when I

  1385. can't work,

  1386. who will take

  1387. care of me?

  1388. You know.

  1389. Children are a

  1390. blessing.

  1391. says the

  1392. psalmist,

  1393. if you have

  1394. eight, you

  1395. have eight

  1396. Christmas parties

  1397. to go to.

  1398. Eight.

  1399. If you don't

  1400. have anybody,

  1401. where do you

  1402. go to?

  1403. Who will help

  1404. you in your

  1405. sickness, in

  1406. your old age?

  1407. And so, she

  1408. felt ashamed

  1409. and cursed.

  1410. But guess what

  1411. God does for

  1412. her?

  1413. Luke chapter

  1414. one, verse

  1415. five.

  1416. The Lord has

  1417. done this for

  1418. me.

  1419. God is

  1420. thinking, I

  1421. am going to

  1422. save the

  1423. world.

  1424. John 3, 16.

  1425. And God is

  1426. saying, there

  1427. is this young

  1428. woman, there

  1429. is this old

  1430. woman who

  1431. feel isolated,

  1432. disgraced.

  1433. I think I'm

  1434. going to add

  1435. joy to her

  1436. life.

  1437. And God, who

  1438. sees the big

  1439. picture, also

  1440. sees the small

  1441. picture.

  1442. I count.

  1443. I know I

  1444. count because

  1445. not even a

  1446. hair falls

  1447. without the

  1448. knowledge of

  1449. my father.

  1450. I've always

  1451. thought it

  1452. would be fun.

  1453. I have

  1454. prayed about

  1455. this.

  1456. I don't know

  1457. what that

  1458. tells you about

  1459. my prayer

  1460. life.

  1461. But I've

  1462. prayed that

  1463. it would be

  1464. like a

  1465. practical joke

  1466. to go to

  1467. a barber and

  1468. for God to

  1469. say, not

  1470. today.

  1471. And the

  1472. barber going

  1473. like this and

  1474. nothing happens,

  1475. you know, starts

  1476. to think what's

  1477. wrong with the

  1478. instruments.

  1479. God knows, God

  1480. knows this.

  1481. I'm not going to

  1482. pull it.

1483. I have to ask his

  1484. permission first.

  1485. But God knows

  1486. even small things

  1487. about me.

  1488. And he

  1489. understands our

  1490. shame.

  1491. He understands

  1492. our disgrace.

  1493. And he is

  1494. there to

  1495. help us.

  1496. And he will

  1497. send his

  1498. grace and

  1499. he will

  1500. send his

  1501. power.

  1502. For thine

  1503. is the

  1504. kingdom and

  1505. the power and

  1506. the glory forever.

  1507. Amen.

  1508. That's just

  1509. first base.

  1510. We still have

  1511. second, third,

  1512. fourth, and

  1513. then home.

  1514. God bless

  1515. you.
