  1. 400 years of silence broken.

  2. God began to speak again.

  3. Through the angel Gabriel.

  4. Gabriel visited and revealed to Zechariah

  5. that he and his wife in their old age in barrenness

  6. were to conceive a son and the son's name would be John.

  7. And John would be the forerunner of the long-awaited Messiah.

  8. The King of kings and the Lord of lords.

  9. The deliverer of God's people.

  10. 400 years of silence.

  11. But God was at work.

  12. Bringing about His eternal plan for the salvation of mankind.

  13. This morning we're going to look at Luke 1.

  14. Verses 26-38.

  15. It's the historic account of God sending the angel Gabriel

  16. to a teenaged peasant girl.

  17. A virgin living in a good-for-nothing place called Nazareth.

  18. It was Nathaniel in John 1 who said,

  19. can anything good come from Nazareth?

  20. God had given Gabriel the task of telling

  21. this teenaged virgin girl, Mary,

  22. that she would conceive and give birth to a boy

  23. destined for greatness.

  24. If you look at Luke 1.

  25. Verse 32.

  26. Out of the lips of Gabriel,

  27. we read this of this baby.

  28. He will be great.

  29. This baby is no other than Emmanuel.

  30. God with us.

  31. The King of kings and the Lord of lords.

  32. And this morning we're going to look

  33. at the miraculous conception of our glorious King.

  34. The incarnating of the second person of the Trinity.

  35. It's amazing.

  36. The incarnation of the second person of the Trinity

  37. is not about God becoming cute and cuddly.

  38. Though I'm sure He was cute and cuddly.

  39. The incarnation,

  40. this miraculous conception of God becoming a man,

  41. taking on flesh,

  42. it's all about fulfillment.

  43. The long-anticipated rival of the Messiah King.

  44. The King of kings and the Lord of lords.

  45. This baby was destined for greatness

  46. because He's the greatest.

  47. So if you're looking at Luke 1,

  48. let me read through verses 26-38.

  49. In the sixth month,

  50. the angel Gabriel was sent from God

  51. to a city of Galilee named Nazareth

  52. to a virgin betrothed to a man

  53. whose name was Joseph of the house of David.

  54. And the virgin's name was Mary.

  55. And he came to her and said,

  56. Greetings, O favored one!

  57. The Lord is with you!

  58. But she was greatly troubled at the saying

  59. and tried to discern

  60. what sort of greeting this might be.

  61. And the angel said to her,

  62. Do not be afraid, Mary,

  63. for you have found favor with God.

  64. And behold,

  65. you will conceive in your womb

  66. and bear a son

  67. and you shall call His name Jesus.

  68. He will be great

  69. and will be called the Son of the Most High.

  70. And the Lord God will give to Him

  71. the throne of His father David.

  72. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever.

  73. And of His kingdom,

  74. there will be no end.

  75. And Mary said to the angel,

  76. How will this be since I am a virgin?

  77. And the angel answered her,

  78. The Holy Spirit will come upon you

  79. and the power of the Most High

  80. will overshadow you.

  81. Therefore, the child to be born

  82. will be called Holy,

  83. the Son of God.

  84. And behold, your relative Elizabeth

  85. in her old age

  86. has also conceived a son.

  87. And this is the sixth month

  88. with her who has been called barren.

  89. For nothing will be impossible

  90. with God.

  91. And Mary said,

  92. Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.

  93. Let it be to me according to your word.

  94. And the angel departed from her.

  95. This baby,

  96. miraculously conceived

  97. in the virgin's womb,

  98. he was destined for greatness.

  99. This morning,

  100. I just want to ask you a quick question.

  101. Are you amazed at his greatness?

  102. His miraculous conception

  103. points to his greatness.

  104. So let's do this.

  105. Let's walk through this passage again.

  106. But let me give you a little bit more detail.

  107. In verses 26 and 27,

  108. they set up the historic conversation

  109. between the angel Gabriel

  110. in this virgin Mary.

  111. And as I mentioned earlier,

  112. Gabriel was the same angel

  113. that God had sent to Zechariah.

  114. Gabriel was breaking the 400 years of silence.

  115. And he was announcing

  116. the coming of the long-awaited king,

  117. the Messiah.

  118. Now it's important to notice

  119. where this scene is taking place.

  120. It's taking place in Nazareth.

  121. And Nazareth didn't have

  122. the best reputation.

  123. It would have been considered

  124. a backwater town.

  125. No one would have guessed

  126. the king of kings

  127. and the lords of lords

  128. would have been conceived there.

  129. Now in a couple weeks,

  130. we'll look at how

  131. Mary and this baby

  132. get from Nazareth to Bethlehem,

  133. which is 70 miles due south.

  134. But what you need to know here

  135. is this is taking place in Nazareth.

  136. Not a prestigious town.

  137. Our Savior was conceived

  138. in very humble beginnings.

  139. Which brings us to this

  140. humble peasant girl, Mary.

  141. She was probably between the ages

  142. of 12 and 14, scholars say.

  143. And in verse 27,

  144. we learn a couple things about Mary.

  145. She was a virgin.

  146. It's repeated twice

  147. in verse 27

  148. and once again in verse 34.

  149. There's emphasis here.

  150. God wants us to know

  151. that this young woman

  152. has not known a man sexually.

  153. Verse 34 literally reads this.

  154. Mary asking the question,

  155. how will this be

  156. since I have not known a man?

  157. Luke is emphasizing

  158. Mary's virginity.

  159. And the question is why?

  160. Well, there are two important reasons.

  161. The first one is this.

  162. No man on earth

  163. could claim

  164. that this baby

  165. that was to be conceived in her

  166. was his own.

  167. It's that simple.

  168. And the second reason

  169. is one of fulfillment.

  170. This was the fulfillment

  171. of a prophetic sign

  172. way back in Isaiah 7.14

  173. spoken 700 years earlier.

  174. Isaiah 7.14 reads this.

  175. Therefore, the Lord Himself

  176. will give you a sign.

  177. Behold, the virgin

  178. shall conceive

  179. and bear a son

  180. and His name shall be called

  181. Emmanuel.

  182. Emmanuel.

  183. What Luke is helping us here,

  184. he's helping us

  185. make a connection.

  186. That this Mary

  187. is the virgin

  188. that Isaiah spoke of

  189. 700 years earlier.

  190. What we need to see

  191. happening here is this.

  192. God's plan

  193. for the fullness of time

  194. is being worked out.

  195. God is fulfilling His word.

  196. God is bringing salvation

  197. to mankind.

  198. God is trying to find.

  199. He's been at work

  200. over these 400 years

  201. of silence.

  202. We also learn

  203. that Mary was betrothed

  204. to a guy named Joseph.

  205. Now at that time,

  206. getting Mary involved

  207. two steps,

  208. kind of like our

  209. two steps nowadays.

  210. The first step back then

  211. was called betrothal

  212. and it was a legally

  213. binding commitment

  214. between a man

  215. and a woman.

  216. The second step

  217. was marriage

  218. where a man and woman

  219. actually came together

  220. and consummated

  221. their union.

  222. Like I said,

  223. it's kind of similar

  224. to what we experience today.

  225. A man and woman

  226. becoming engaged

  227. and then getting married.

  228. But unlike today,

  229. betrothal in the first century,

  230. that first step,

  231. was legally binding.

  232. And so to break off

  233. a betrothal

  234. required a legal divorce.

  235. That's what's happening

  236. when we read

  237. Matthew chapter 1

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  238. when Joseph learns

  239. that Mary was pregnant.

  240. How about that

  241. for some drama?

  242. He assumes another man

  243. had gotten Mary pregnant

  244. and he's going to

  245. divorce her quietly.

  246. The situation was such

  247. that it required

  248. an angel of the Lord,

  249. I'm guessing Gabriel,

  250. to appear to Joseph

  251. and to explain to him

  252. that the child

  253. in Mary's womb

  254. was conceived

  255. by the Holy Spirit

  256. in fulfillment

  257. of Isaiah 7.14.

  258. And the angel said,

  259. you've got to take her

  260. as your wife.

  261. And Joseph did.

  262. He believed

  263. and he obeyed.

  264. So Mary was

  265. a young,

  266. teenaged virgin,

  267. betrothed to Joseph,

  268. living in the good-for-nothing

  269. town of Nazareth

  270. when Gabriel

  271. appears to her

  272. and in verse 28

  273. we read the greeting.

  274. Greetings,

  275. O favored one,

  276. the Lord is with you.

  277. Now mind you,

  278. there was no warning

  279. of this.

  280. Maybe a more accurate

  281. rendering would be

  282. rejoice,

  283. O favored one,

  284. the Lord is with you.

  285. Gabriel is bringing

  286. good news.

  287. It's like he's saying,

  288. Mary,

  289. in God's great purposes,

  290. you are the virgin

  291. of Isaiah 7.14.

  292. Rejoice,

  293. O favored one.

  294. It's Mary

  295. who will conceive

  296. and give birth

  297. to Emmanuel,

  298. God with us.

  299. Think about this.

  300. when God inspired Isaiah

  301. to speak

  302. the words recorded,

  303. Isaiah 7.14,

  304. God knew

  305. who he had in mind.

  306. God knew

  307. this Mary

  308. 700 years earlier.

  309. She's not a random choice.

  310. What's happening here

  311. is the outworking

  312. of God's eternal plan.

  313. And it helps us

  314. to understand

  315. what Gabriel means

  316. when he calls Mary,

  317. O favored one.

  318. She has been chosen

  319. by God

  320. to fulfill

  321. Isaiah 7.14.

  322. Gabriel also tells Mary,

  323. God is with you.

  324. What a promise.

  325. Very timely.

  326. Because

  327. what Mary

  328. is going to go through,

  329. she's going to need

  330. that promise.

  331. Well,

  332. verse 27,

  333. we see Mary's response.

  334. She's troubled.

  335. Literally,

  336. she's confused.

  337. She's confused

  338. at what Gabriel

  339. has just said to her.

  340. Maybe

  341. she's in the presence

  342. of an angel.

  343. We're not told

  344. what he looks like.

  345. Was he kind of

  346. levitating off the ground

  347. a little bit?

  348. To what degree

  349. was he glowing?

  350. How did she know?

  351. Maybe she was

  352. overwhelmed by that.

  353. It does seem clear,

  354. though,

  355. that she was also

  356. overwhelmed

  357. by the words

  358. that seemed

  359. to be coming

  360. out of nowhere.

  361. her.

  362. Rejoice,

  363. O favored one.

  364. God is with you.

  365. What was she doing

  366. when she was interrupted?

  367. It's probably

  368. all of the above.

  369. An angel speaking

  370. to you

  371. would be

  372. somewhat troubling.

  373. him.

  374. But we see something

  375. here about Mary

  376. that clues us

  377. into why God

  378. had chosen her.

  379. She,

  380. tried to discern

  381. what sort of

  382. greeting this might be.

  383. she was thoughtful

  384. about it.

  385. She didn't freak out.

  386. She didn't turn around

  387. and run.

  388. She was thoughtful.

  389. What does this mean?

  390. Gabriel sees her

  391. trying to make sense

  392. of what's going on here

  393. and so he speaks again.

  394. Verse 30,

  395. Don't be afraid,

  396. Mary,

  397. for you have found

  398. favor with God.

  399. It's like Gabriel

  400. saying,

  401. Mary,

  402. everything's cool.

  403. God has chosen you

  404. among all women

  405. for a great privilege.

  406. What is God

  407. going to do?

  408. Look at verse 31.

  409. And behold,

  410. you will conceive

  411. in your womb

  412. and bear a son

  413. and you shall call

  414. his name

  415. Jesus.

  416. Does that echo

  417. of anything

  418. in your mind?

  419. It should echo

  420. of the passage

  421. I read earlier.

  422. should echo

  423. of Isaiah 7.14.

  424. Therefore,

  425. the Lord himself

  426. will give you a sign.

  427. Behold,

  428. the virgin

  429. shall conceive

  430. and bear a son

  431. and shall call

  432. his name

  433. Emmanuel.

  434. The angel says here,

  435. and behold,

  436. you,

  437. the virgin,

  438. will conceive

  439. in your womb

  440. and bear a son

  441. and you shall call

  442. his name

  443. what are you waiting

  444. for?

  445. Isaiah 7.14

  446. would say

  447. Emmanuel.

  448. The angel

  449. says Jesus.

  450. It's purposeful.

  451. What's the intended

  452. effect?

  453. If you knew

  454. Isaiah 7.14

  455. you would be thinking

  456. Jesus is Emmanuel.

  457. Emmanuel is Jesus.

  458. Jesus.

  459. Jesus is God

  460. with us.

  461. Now Jesus

  462. was a common name

  463. back in the day.

  464. In our rendering,

  465. it's a rendering,

  466. Jesus is English

  467. for a Hebrew word

  468. Yeshua,

  469. which actually

  470. means Joshua

  471. and it actually

  472. means Savior.

  473. and behold,

  474. you Mary,

  475. the virgin,

  476. will conceive

  477. in your womb

  478. and bear a son

  479. and you shall

  480. call his name

  481. Savior

  482. who is our Emmanuel,

  483. God with us.

  484. It's packed.

  485. Packed.

  486. Mary's being told

  487. she's to be

  488. the mother

  489. of the Messiah,

  490. Emmanuel,

  491. God with us

  492. and his name

  493. is Jesus.

  494. No other woman

  495. on the face

  496. of this planet

  497. can claim

  498. that honor.

  499. We don't worship

  500. her because of that,

  501. but we do bless

  502. her because of that.

  503. We do honor her

  504. because of that.

  505. Gabriel continues

  506. in verse 32,

  507. He will be great.

  508. This woman born to you,

  509. He will be great.

  510. This Jesus born to you,

  511. He is destined

  512. for greatness

  513. because He is

  514. the greatest.

  515. He, Jesus,

  516. will be called

  517. the Son of the Most High.

  518. He will be conceived

  519. by God Himself.

  520. This gets

  521. at the deep end

  522. of the pool.

  523. You see,

  524. Jesus

  525. had two natures.

  526. He was simultaneously

  527. fully God

  528. and fully man.

  529. two distinct natures

  530. in one person.

  531. He remains so today.

  532. Remember,

  533. He lived a life,

  534. died on the cross,

  535. was raised from the dead,

  536. and then He ascended

  537. to the right hand

  538. of God bodily

  539. and where He is

  540. right now.

  541. Fully God,

  542. fully man,

  543. interceding for His own.

  544. Son of the Most High.

  545. And the Lord God

  546. will give to Him

  547. the throne of His father,

  548. David.

  549. This is the fulfillment

  550. of a promise

  551. God made to King David

  552. way back in 2 Samuel 7.

  553. God promises to King David

  554. He will establish

  555. David's throne forever.

  556. There will always be

  557. a descendant of David

  558. on David's throne.

  559. Jesus is that descendant

  560. of David.

  561. David.

  562. The throne represents

  563. kingship.

  564. God is saying

  565. this child in Mary's womb

  566. is the long-awaited

  567. descendant of David

  568. who will sit upon

  569. the throne.

  570. And by the way,

  571. He's fully God

  572. and fully man.

  573. Emmanuel.

  574. He is the forever king.

  575. And He will reign over

  576. the house of Jacob

  577. forever.

  578. God is giving this child

  579. conceived in Mary's womb

  580. to be king

  581. and He's going to reign.

  582. He's going to exercise

  583. authority over the house

  584. of Jacob.

  585. He is Israel's long-awaited

  586. Messiah.

  587. The long-awaited King

  588. of Israel.

  589. He is their Messiah

  590. who will reign forever

  591. and by God's grace,

  592. He is our Messiah.

  593. He is king of both Jews

  594. and Gentiles.

  595. He's the king of kings

  596. and the Lord of lords.

  597. He's Lord of all.

  598. Our forever king

  599. who will reign forever

  600. and of His kingdom

  601. there will be no end.

  602. Nations rise

  603. and nations fall

  604. but not the kingdom

  605. of Emmanuel.

  606. The kingdom of God

  607. has no end

  608. as Christians.

  609. We've been transferred

  610. from the domain

  611. of darkness

  612. into the kingdom

  613. of God's beloved son

  614. King Jesus.

  615. A kingdom expanding

  616. and everlasting.

  617. It's expanding

  618. in this city.

  619. He is our forever king

  620. whose reign is forever

  621. and He reigns over

  622. an everlasting kingdom.

  623. kingdom.

  624. That's the one

  625. who's in the womb.

  626. He will be great.

  627. This baby conceived

  628. was destined

  629. for greatness

  630. because He is greatness.

  631. He is our forever king

  632. who will exercise

  633. a forever reign

  634. on David's throne

  635. over an everlasting kingdom.

  636. It's as if Gabriel

  637. is saying to this virgin,

  638. Mary, the child

  639. in your womb

  640. is the one

  641. who fulfills

  642. God's forever plan.

  643. He's the forever king.

  644. He will be great.

  645. What do you think

  646. about them apples, Mary?

  647. Verse 34,

  648. Mary responds in faith

  649. but she has a very

  650. pragmatic question.

  651. Her question is

  652. a how question.

  653. A how question

  654. born of faith.

  655. Now, Zachariah

  656. earlier on

  657. asked a how question.

  658. When the angel Gabriel

  659. told him

  660. that his wife

  661. was going to have

  662. a son,

  663. he was like,

  664. how's that going to happen?

  665. Show me.

  666. Prove it to me.

  667. And the angel did.

  668. He inflicted mutinous

  669. on Zachariah

  670. for nine months.

  671. It was quite the sign.

  672. Mary doesn't demand

  673. an explanation.

  674. She humbly asks

  675. for help

  676. to understand.

  677. Mary isn't the only one

  678. who needs help

  679. in understanding

  680. what happened

  681. in her womb.

  682. We need help.

  683. It's hard for us

  684. to understand

  685. how a child

  686. can be conceived

  687. in a virgin's womb

  688. without a man involved.

  689. Conception

  690. typically doesn't happen

  691. that way.

  692. God's ways

  693. are higher

  694. than our ways.

  695. in verse 35,

  696. Gabriel helps

  697. Mary

  698. and us

  699. understand

  700. how this child

  701. will be conceived

  702. in the virgin's womb.

  703. and he brings us

  704. once again

  705. into the deep end

  706. of the pool.

  707. He says this,

  708. the Holy Spirit

  709. will come upon you

  710. and the Most High

  711. will overshadow you.

  712. Therefore,

  713. the child to be born

  714. will be called

  715. holy,

  716. the Son of God.

  717. Gabriel doesn't give

  718. Mary a biological answer.

  719. Gabriel gives Mary

  720. a theological answer.

  721. The conception

  722. of Jesus

  723. in the virgin womb

  724. of Mary

  725. was a miraculous

  726. display

  727. of the triune

  728. God's powerful presence.

  729. You see him?

  730. Do you see

  731. this triune God

  732. there in verse 35?

  733. The Holy Spirit

  734. will come upon you

  735. and the Most High

  736. will overshadow you.

  737. There he is,

  738. the Son of God.

  739. Three persons

  740. of the Trinity.

  741. They're all there.

  742. The Father,

  743. the first person

  744. of the Trinity,

  745. God Most High

  746. overshadows Mary.

  747. There's no hint

  748. in this text

  749. of sexual overtones.

  750. It's the same word

  751. that describes,

  752. this word overshadow,

  753. describes God's presence

  754. that overshadowed

  755. the Mount of Transfiguration.

  756. God's presence manifest.

  757. Out of which God says,

  758. this is my beloved Son

  759. of whom I'm well pleased.

  760. The third person

  761. of the Trinity,

  762. the Holy Spirit,

  763. was the one

  764. who actually caused

  765. the second person

  766. of the Trinity

  767. to be conceived

  768. in the virgin's womb.

  769. This is big stuff,

  770. isn't it?

  771. Now what we need

  772. to understand is this.

  773. The second person

  774. of the Trinity

  775. has eternally existed

  776. before his incarnation.

  777. Jesus wasn't created.

  778. The second person

  779. of the Trinity

  780. wasn't created

  781. at the incarnation.

  782. The second person

  783. of the Trinity

  784. eternally existed

  785. before the incarnation

  786. and then as a work

  787. of the triune God.

  788. He was incarnated.

  789. He took on human flesh.

  790. Fully God,

  791. fully man.

  792. Two distinct natures

  793. in one person.

  794. What's so unique

  795. about this point

  796. in the history

  797. of redemption

  798. is that the eternal

  799. Son of God,

  800. the second person

  801. of the Trinity,

  802. permanently

  803. takes on

  804. human flesh.

  805. It's amazing.

  806. For that to happen

  807. required a coordinated

  808. miracle of the triune God.

  809. This Jesus,

  810. He will be great.

  811. The second person

  812. of the Trinity

  813. miraculously conceived

  814. in the womb of Mary

  815. as a man.

  816. Fully God.

  817. Fully man.

  818. Man,

  819. this is not only miraculous,

  820. it's mysterious.

  821. This is hard

  822. to keep together,

  823. isn't it?

  824. This is beyond us.

  825. It's the glory

  826. of our King.

  827. What we see here

  828. in verse 35

  829. is all three members

  830. of the Trinity

  831. involved in the

  832. miraculous conception

  833. of Jesus and Mary's womb.

  834. The miraculous conception

  835. is a triune miracle.

  836. This is all part

  837. of the plan

  838. of God's

  839. eternal plan

  840. for the salvation

  841. of mankind.

  842. In verses 36

  843. and 37,

  844. Gabriel goes on

  845. to assure Mary

  846. of God's ability

  847. to pull this miracle off.

  848. And the way he does it,

  849. he says,

  850. hey,

  851. I've already been doing

  852. this kind of stuff.

  853. Your relative,

  854. Elizabeth,

  855. she's conceived

  856. six months ago.

  857. It's already happening.

  858. I'm capable

  859. of this kind of thing.

  860. Do you remember

  861. Gabriel's first words

  862. to Mary?

  863. Rejoice,

  864. O favored one.

  865. God is with you.

  866. What a promise.

  867. Great assurance.

  868. And the final words

  869. of Gabriel

  870. here in this text

  871. to Mary is this,

  872. for nothing will be

  873. impossible with God.

  874. Opening the womb

  875. of an old,

  876. barren woman

  877. is well within

  878. God's omnipotence.

  879. Incarnating the Savior

  880. of the world,

  881. Jesus,

  882. fully God

  883. and fully man

  884. in a virgin's womb

  885. is also

  886. well within

  887. God's power.

  888. What's impossible,

  889. humanly speaking,

  890. a virgin conceiving

  891. a child without a man

  892. is more than possible

  893. for God.

  894. His ways are far

  895. beyond our ways.

  896. God's love

  897. is the Lord.

  898. This scene

  899. ends in verse 38.

  900. Mary takes it all in

  901. and says,

  902. I am the Lord.

  903. I am the servant

  904. of the Lord.

  905. Let it be to me

  906. according to your word.

  907. In other words,

  908. Amen!

  909. Amen.

  910. It's a humble

  911. and believing response.

  912. She sees herself

  913. rightly

  914. in relationship

  915. to God.

  916. She will serve

  917. in the capacity

  918. God has called her to.

  919. That humility

  920. is further demonstrated

  921. in her trusting

  922. in the words

  923. of the angel

  924. Gabriel

  925. who was sent

  926. from God.

  927. She is trusting

  928. that these words

  929. are true

  930. and must be obeyed.

  931. Not only is she

  932. to be the mother

  933. of Jesus,

  934. she's becoming

  935. a disciple

  936. of Jesus.

  937. this woman

  938. who will be

  939. at the birth

  940. of Jesus

  941. will also be

  942. present at His death.

  943. She will become

  944. one of His followers.

  945. So what is this

  946. passage all about?

  947. It's all about

  948. the greatness

  949. of the One

  950. who was miraculously

  951. conceived

  952. in Mary's

  953. virgin womb.

  954. It's all about Him.

  955. It's all about Christ.

  956. Christ.

  957. Gabriel said it

  958. in verse whatever.

  959. He will be great.

  960. He was destined

  961. for greatness

  962. because He is

  963. the greatest.

  964. So here's this.

  965. Four things

  966. to walk away

  967. with this morning.

  968. Four things

  969. to walk away

  970. and be amazed by.

  971. To savor

  972. this Christmas season.

  973. First is this.

  974. The conception

  975. of Jesus

  976. in the virgin

  977. womb of Mary

  978. was a great

  979. fulfillment.

  980. fulfillment.

  981. It's the fulfillment

  982. of Isaiah 7.14.

  983. Behold,

  984. the virgin

  985. shall conceive

  986. a child

  987. and bear a son.

  988. They should call

  989. His name Emmanuel.

  990. The great fulfillment

  991. is part of God's

  992. great plan of salvation

  993. for sinners

  994. like me and you.

  995. Emmanuel

  996. is Jesus.

  997. Our Savior.

  998. Our God

  999. became flesh

  1000. in order to

  1001. save sinners.

  1002. It's an amazing

  1003. fulfillment.

  1004. fulfillment.

  1005. Are you amazed

  1006. that your God

  1007. would take on

  1008. flesh

  1009. in order

  1010. to rescue you?

  1011. Are you amazed?

  1012. The second thing,

  1013. the conception

  1014. of Jesus

  1015. in the virgin's

  1016. womb

  1017. was a great

  1018. miracle.

  1019. It's not

  1020. humanly possible.

  1021. but what is

  1022. impossible

  1023. for man

  1024. is possible

  1025. for the

  1026. triune God.

  1027. The miraculous

  1028. conception

  1029. of Emmanuel

  1030. was a

  1031. coordinated

  1032. miracle

  1033. of the

  1034. triune God.

  1035. It was all

  1036. according to

  1037. His plan.

  1038. It's an amazing

  1039. miracle

  1040. and it's essential

  1041. to our faith.

  1042. Are you amazed

  1043. by that miracle?

  1044. Do you realize

  1045. what happened?

  1046. It's amazing.

  1047. Nothing is

  1048. impossible

  1049. for God.

  1050. Third,

  1051. the conception

  1052. of Jesus

  1053. in Mary's

  1054. womb

  1055. is a great

  1056. mystery.

  1057. How can

  1058. God become

  1059. flesh?

  1060. How does

  1061. the eternally

  1062. existing

  1063. second person

  1064. of the Trinity

  1065. take on

  1066. human flesh

  1067. without ceasing

  1068. to be either

  1069. fully God

  1070. or fully man?

  1071. It's an amazing

  1072. mystery

  1073. and it's

  1074. our God.

  1075. It's our King.

  1076. It's our Savior.

  1077. That's who He is.

  1078. He is.

  1079. It's glorious.

  1080. There's no one

  1081. like Him.

  1082. He is the only

  1083. theanthropic

  1084. one.

  1085. Fully God,

  1086. fully man.

  1087. One person.

  1088. And as the only

  1089. one who is

  1090. fully God

  1091. and fully man,

  1092. He's the only

  1093. mediator

  1094. between God

  1095. and man.

  1096. No one

  1097. can be saved

  1098. apart from Him.

  1099. God became

  1100. one of us

  1101. in order to

  1102. save us.

  1103. Are you

  1104. amazed?

  1105. Fourth,

  1106. the baby

  1107. conceived in

  1108. the virgin's

  1109. womb

  1110. is the

  1111. great

  1112. forever

  1113. King.

  1114. And He

  1115. calls you

  1116. to wholehearted

  1117. humble

  1118. obedience.

  1119. Your response

  1120. to Jesus

  1121. is to be

  1122. the same

  1123. of His

  1124. mother's.

  1125. Behold,

  1126. I am the

  1127. servant of

  1128. the Lord.

  1129. Let it be

  1130. to me

  1131. according to

  1132. your word.

  1133. Have you

  1134. bowed your

  1135. knee in

  1136. wholehearted,

  1137. humble

  1138. obedience to

  1139. King Jesus?

  1140. He is the

  1141. great King of

  1142. kings and

  1143. Lord of

  1144. lords.

  1145. And those

  1146. who bowed

  1147. their knee

  1148. to Him

  1149. and Him

  1150. alone,

  1151. you know

  1152. what they

  1153. find?

  1154. Forgiveness

  1155. of all their

  1156. sins.

  1157. Freedom

  1158. from

  1159. captivity.

  1160. Joy

  1161. unceasing.

  1162. Blessing

  1163. upon blessing

  1164. upon blessing.

  1165. The opening

  1166. words of

  1167. Mary's

  1168. magnificat

  1169. will be

  1170. yours

  1171. if you

  1172. bow your

  1173. knee.

  1174. My soul

  1175. magnifies

  1176. the Lord

  1177. and my

  1178. spirit

  1179. rejoices

  1180. in God

  1181. my Savior.

  1182. Our

  1183. conclusion

  1184. this morning?

  1185. The 400

  1186. years of

  1187. silence

  1188. had been

  1189. broken.

  1190. The baby

  1191. born of

  1192. the Virgin

  1193. Mary,

  1194. he will

  1195. be great.

  1196. He is

  1197. great.

  1198. He is

  1199. alive and

  1200. he is

  1201. reigning and

  1202. he is

  1203. expanding his

  1204. everlasting

  1205. kingdom.

  1206. He is

  1207. our great

  1208. Savior,

  1209. our great

  1210. King.

  1211. He is

  1212. our great

  1213. Emmanuel.

  1214. And my

  1215. prayer for

  1216. you is

  1217. that his

  1218. greatness

  1219. would be

  1220. the joy

  1221. of your

  1222. Christmas.

  1223. Let's

  1224. pray.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. Amen.

  1237. Amen.

  1238. Amen.

  1239. Amen.

  1240. Great

  1241. triune

  1242. God,

  1243. we stand

  1244. amazed

  1245. at what

  1246. you did

  1247. 2,000

  1248. years ago.

  1249. This is

  1250. beyond us.

  1251. We recognize

  1252. your ways

  1253. are not

  1254. our ways,

  1255. but what

  1256. we can

  1257. see,

  1258. we say

  1259. glory to

  1260. God in

  1261. the highest.

  1262. There's

  1263. no one

  1264. like you.

  1265. King

  1266. Jesus,

  1267. we gladly

  1268. bow our

  1269. knee,

  1270. for we

  1271. delight in

  1272. you.

  1273. We

  1274. delight in you.

  1275. You are

  1276. our

  1277. Emmanuel.

  1278. In Jesus'

  1279. name we

  1280. pray,

  1281. Amen.
