  26. Well, you along with the rest of us have tasted the oppression of living in a sin-strained world.

  27. Everyone experiences life under the oppression of sin.

  28. No one escapes it.

  29. No one.

  30. Sin within.

  31. Sin without.

  32. Sin without.

  38. Sin without.

  39. So on this Christmas Eve 2014.

  40. Where are you looking for salvation?

  41. where do you look for deliverance

  42. where do you look for relief

  43. where do you look for escape

  44. and this Christmas Eve

  45. I'm going to point your gaze

  46. to God's provision

  47. for our deliverance

  48. God's salvation

  49. salvation has a name

  50. Jesus

  51. in Luke 2, 22-33

  52. we read about a surprising run-in

  53. at the temple in Jerusalem

  54. in Luke 1 we learn that Jesus

  55. was miraculously conceived

  56. in a virgin

  57. Mary in a town called Nazareth

  58. and then in Luke 2 we learn that

  59. God sovereignly orchestrates

  60. international events

  61. to get Joseph and Mary

  62. down to Bethlehem

  63. so this little baby

  64. would be born in the hometown of David

  65. he's a descendant of David

  66. he'd be a king

  67. it would fulfill Micah 5, 2

  68. the passage Ben read earlier

  69. and then tonight

  70. we're going to look at an event

  71. that took place a month after that

  72. a month after the birth of Jesus

  73. Joseph and Mary bring Jesus

  74. from Bethlehem up north

  75. to Jerusalem

  76. to present him to God

  77. at the temple in Jerusalem

  78. Jerusalem was the capital of Israel

  79. and at the heart of Jerusalem

  80. was the temple

  81. it would have been glorious to see

  82. the temple

  83. represented God's presence

  84. among God's people

  85. Joseph and Mary bring Jesus

  86. to the temple

  87. out of obedience

  88. to the Old Testament commandment

  89. to present the firstborn son

  90. to the Lord

  91. they're obeying God's word

  92. and when they bring this month old Jesus

  93. to the temple in Jerusalem

  94. they have no idea that someone's waiting for them

  95. someone is watching for them

  96. his name was Simeon

  97. Luke 2, 25 and 26

  98. tells us some things about this man Simeon

  99. at this point

  100. he was an old man

  101. he was godly

  102. Luke says he was

  103. righteous and devout

  104. he was quote unquote

  105. waiting for the consolation of Israel

  106. end quote

  107. which means he was looking for the Messiah

  108. the long promised king

  109. who would deliver

  110. his people from oppression

  111. we learn something else

  112. about this Simeon

  113. that the Holy Spirit

  114. was upon him

  115. and the pattern we read

  116. in the Gospel of Luke

  117. and in Acts

  118. Luke wrote Acts as well

  119. is that

  120. when the Holy Spirit

  121. comes upon someone

  122. they speak

  123. they declare

  124. they announce something

  125. about Jesus

  126. there's one more detail

  127. about Simeon

  128. you need to know

  129. and we read about it

  130. in verse 26

  131. it's this

  132. the Holy Spirit

  133. had revealed to Simeon

  134. that he would see

  135. the Messiah

  136. he would see

  137. the Lord's Christ

  138. with his own eyes

  139. before he died

  140. and so as an old man

  141. he's starting to wonder

  142. so

  143. here's the scene

  144. in verse 27

  145. the Holy Spirit

  146. leads Simeon

  147. into the temple complex

  148. and Simeon

  149. takes a spot

  150. overlooking those

  151. coming into the temple

  152. he's looking for someone

  153. he's looking for a child

  154. born to us

  155. to us

  156. a son is given

  157. he's looking for that boy

  158. scanning the crowd

  159. he's looking

  160. he knows

  161. by the Holy Spirit

  162. leading him

  163. that today

  164. he will see

  165. the consolation

  166. of Israel

  167. and the whole

  168. world

  169. he'll see him

  170. with his own eyes

  171. as Joseph and Mary

  172. walk up the stairs

  173. into the temple

  174. they have no idea

  175. there's an old man

  176. filled with the Holy Spirit

  177. looking for their baby boy

  178. they're just seeking

  179. to dedicate their son

  180. as God commanded

  181. in his law

  182. while they walk up

  183. in Simeon season

  184. the Holy Spirit

  185. must have sung

  186. to Simeon's soul

  187. there he is

  188. he's the one

  189. you know

  190. it's moments like these

  191. in the Bible

  192. you're reading along

  193. and you just kind of

  194. want more detail

  195. like

  196. what did

  197. what did Simeon do

  198. did his eyes

  199. well up with tears

  200. did his mouth

  201. drop

  202. did he clasp

  203. his hands

  204. and cry out

  205. he has come

  206. did he rush

  207. did he run

  208. towards Mary

  209. and Joseph

  210. and snatch that baby

  211. out of Mary's hands

  212. or was he a slow

  213. mover

  214. kind of that mix

  215. of

  216. tears

  217. and laughter

  218. at the same time

  219. oh

  220. oh

  221. oh

  222. he's here

  223. when Jenny and I

  224. adopted our daughter

  225. Mary

  226. we were flying back

  227. to the states

  228. from China

  229. and there was a group

  230. of older Chinese women

  231. who were

  232. sitting in a row

  233. next to us

  234. and they kept on

  235. looking down at us

  236. and Mary

  237. who was in our lap

  238. and when we leveled out

  239. one of these women

  240. unbuckled

  241. got up

  242. walked right over

  243. to us

  244. and grabbed Mary

  245. right out of

  246. Jenny's arms

  247. and brought her to

  248. the row of Chinese

  249. and we just watched

  250. as our baby girl

  251. got passed

  252. down the row

  253. we knew these women

  254. were delighting

  255. in our daughter

  256. and we also knew

  257. there was no way

  258. out at 35,000 feet

  259. neither Jenny and I

  260. will forget that moment

  261. and neither would

  262. Mary and Joseph

  263. forget this moment

  264. Simeon

  265. filled with the spirit

  266. holding this

  267. one month old baby

  268. in his arms

  269. and he speaks

  270. a prophetic word

  271. of fulfillment

  272. it's directed at God

  273. as he looks

  274. at this little baby

  275. this is what he said

  276. Lord

  277. now you are letting

  278. your servant

  279. depart in peace

  280. according to your work

  281. for my eyes

  282. have seen

  283. your salvation

  284. for my eyes

  285. these old eyes

  286. have seen

  287. your salvation

  288. what was Simeon

  289. looking at?

  290. was he looking at

  291. the first national

  292. bank of Jerusalem?

  293. no

  294. God's salvation

  295. isn't money

  296. was he looking

  297. at Jerusalem hospital?

  298. no

  299. God's salvation

  300. isn't health

  301. was he looking

  302. at the Jerusalem

  303. board of trade?

  304. no

  305. salvation

  306. wouldn't come

  307. with a robust economy

  308. was he looking

  309. at a military

  310. parade?

  311. no

  312. God's salvation

  313. wouldn't come

  314. through military

  315. might

  316. was Simeon

  317. looking at

  318. the temple?

  319. this towering

  320. religious structure?

  321. no

  322. it wasn't a building

  323. God's salvation

  324. was the baby

  325. God's salvation

  326. was his baby

  327. this old man

  328. was holding

  329. Simeon was looking

  330. into the face

  331. of God

  332. he was looking

  333. into the face

  334. of God's

  335. anointed one

  336. Emmanuel

  337. God with us

  338. the Messiah

  339. the only one

  340. this little

  341. seven pound boy

  342. the only one

  343. who could save

  344. us from

  345. the oppression

  346. of living

  347. in a sin

  348. strained

  349. sin sane

  350. sin soaked

  351. world

  352. this little boy

  353. this one month

  354. old boy

  355. whose birth

  356. we celebrate

  357. tomorrow

  358. he would grow

  359. and he would

  360. live a life

  361. that none of us

  362. ever could

  363. Jesus lived

  364. a life fully

  365. pleasing to God

  366. every second

  367. of every minute

  368. of every hour

  369. of every day

  370. always pleasing

  371. to God

  372. fully pleasing

  373. to God

  374. every moment

  375. it wasn't just

  376. the absence

  377. of sin

  378. it was the

  379. fullness

  380. of pleasing

  381. God

  382. every day

  383. of his life

  384. and then he died

  385. on a cross

  386. as a substitute

  387. he gave his

  388. perfect life

  389. to pay for the

  390. sins

  391. we have committed

  392. against God

  393. and against

  394. others

  395. he lived a

  396. perfect life

  397. and died

  398. and then died

  399. in the place

  400. of sinners

  401. but he didn't

  402. stay dead

  403. God raised him

  404. from the dead

  405. and with

  406. his resurrection

  407. Christ

  408. triumphed

  409. over the

  410. triple threat

  411. those big

  412. three oppressors

  413. sin

  414. death

  415. and the devil

  416. Jesus routed

  417. them

  418. he routed

  419. him

  420. through his

  421. death and

  422. resurrection

  423. and when he

  424. comes back

  425. he's going to

  426. finish what he

  427. started

  428. he's going to

  429. ultimately

  430. and finally

  431. complete what

  432. his death and

  433. resurrection

  434. began

  435. when this baby

  436. comes back

  437. he's going to

  438. complete it

  439. no more sin

  440. no more death

  441. no more devil

  442. far as the curse

  443. is found

  444. for everyone

  445. who trusts in

  446. Christ alone

  447. they are brought

  448. into this triumph

  449. we share in what

  450. Christ has done

  451. for us

  452. victorious

  453. triumphant

  454. our oppressors

  455. are routed

  456. he's the great

  457. deliverer

  458. this baby

  459. in Simeon's

  460. arms

  461. God in the

  462. flesh

  463. Emmanuel

  464. he alone

  465. is God's

  466. salvation

  467. for all

  468. people

  469. so here we

  470. are tonight

  471. Christmas Eve

  472. 2014

  473. a long

  474. way away

  475. from when

  476. this baby

  477. was born

  478. but he's

  479. alive

  480. where are you

  481. looking for

  482. deliverance

  483. where are you

  484. looking for

  485. rescue

  486. have you

  487. yet to see

  488. with eyes

  489. of faith

  490. that this

  491. Jesus

  492. in Simeon's

  493. arms

  494. is God's

  495. salvation

  496. that he's

  497. holding out

  498. to you

  499. receive him

  500. bow before

  501. him

  502. he's our

  503. deliverer

  504. king

  505. joy to

  506. the world

  507. the Lord

  508. has come

  509. let earth

  510. receive her

  511. king

  512. let every

  513. heart

  514. your heart

  515. tonight

  516. tomorrow

  517. morning

  518. let every

  519. heart

  520. prepare

  521. him

  522. room

  523. let every

  524. don't

  525. gosh
