  1. Last week I preached a sermon on Isaiah 6.

  2. You remember the seraphim?

  3. Six-winged angels above God on His throne

  4. crying out,

  5. Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts.

  6. The whole earth is full of His glory.

  7. The thresholds of the heavenly temple shook.

  8. Smoke filled the place.

  9. It would have been awesome.

  10. You can't walk away from Isaiah 6

  11. without the realization that God is serious about His holiness.

  12. His holiness and our holiness.

  13. God is qualitatively set apart from everything else.

  14. He is an all-consuming fire of moral purity.

  15. And throughout the New Testament,

  16. we read over and over again

  17. that God saves sinners

  18. in order to make them holy

  19. as He is holy.

  20. All by His grace.

  21. He saved us to be qualitatively different

  22. from everybody else.

  23. He wants us to share in His holiness.

  24. That's no burden.

  25. That's joy.

  26. That's joy.

  27. That's joy.

  28. I need to get two things done.

  29. I'm not going to preach on Ephesians 5, 3 through 6 this morning.

  30. And so the note in your bulletin,

  31. I'll be preaching on that next week.

  32. What I'm going to preach on this morning is this.

  33. We're going to do an overview of the book of Ephesians.

  34. And then the second thing I want to help you see

  35. is that there is a really important connection

  36. in the book of Ephesians.

  37. Really important for our holiness.

  38. So let's get reacquainted with the book of Ephesians.

  39. Now if you suddenly found yourself in a city

  40. that you'd never been to before

  41. or you were unfamiliar with,

  42. what would you do?

  43. I'm guessing some of us would look for a map.

  44. I think other of us would pull out our smartphones

  45. and hit our map application

  46. to figure out,

  47. hey, where am I in this city?

  48. I've got a little app on my phone

  49. and I love it.

  50. Because not only it shows me the city,

  51. it shows me where I am in the city.

  52. It's very helpful.

  53. And so this morning,

  54. not only do I want to give you a map

  55. of the book of Ephesians,

  56. I want to show you where we're going to be at

  57. in Ephesians next week.

  58. So we're going to start off by

  59. flying to 45,000 feet

  60. so we can overview the book of Ephesians.

  61. And then we're going to come down to 10,000 feet

  62. so we can see some specific contours.

  63. So it's been over a month and a half

  64. since we were in the book of Ephesians.

  65. I'm not sure if you've realized that.

  66. It's been some time.

  67. And we finished off

  68. having just started Ephesians 5.

  69. And Ephesians is essentially

  70. a sustained line of apostolic logic.

  71. It's progressive.

  72. The first half of Ephesians,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  73. chapters 1 through 3,

  74. is all about the truth

  75. of who we are in Christ.

  76. It's truth after truth.

  77. Fact after fact.

  78. Full of instruction.

  79. This is who you are.

  80. This is who you are.

  81. This is who you are.

  82. The second half of Ephesians

  83. depends on the first.

  84. After informing us of who we are in Christ

  85. over and over again,

  86. Paul in the second half of Ephesians

  87. exhorts us

  88. over and over and over again.

  89. This is who you are.

  90. This is who you are.

  91. First half.

  92. First half.

  93. Second half.

  94. This is how you live.

  95. Did you hear that word exhort?

  96. That might be an unfamiliar word to you.

  97. It's not extort.

  98. Coaches exhort.

  99. Like Urban Myers of the Ohio State Buckeyes

  100. exhorted his Ohio State Buckeyes

  101. onto victory.

  102. So the first half of Ephesians

  103. who you are in Christ

  104. truth after truth.

  105. The second half

  106. how to live

  107. exhortation after exhortation.

  108. So that's the 45,000 feet overview.

  109. Let's now go down to 10,000 feet.

  110. I want to lay this out

  111. this book

  112. to give you a better sense

  113. of the whole

  114. and where we are in it.

  115. But there's a particular thing

  116. I want you to see

  117. as we go through this.

  118. I want you to help you

  119. to see Ephesians

  120. through the lens of holiness.

  121. God is serious about His holiness.

  122. We need to be serious

  123. about His holiness.

  124. And Ephesians helps us.

  125. So Ephesians 1.1

  126. Here's what you're going to need

  127. to do this morning.

  128. You're going to need your Bible open.

  129. So turn in your Bibles

  130. to Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  131. and you might need

  132. to kind of buckle up

  133. because we're going to be moving.

  134. So I'm going to hit the high points

  135. throughout Ephesians

  136. so that you can see

  137. this beautiful book as a whole

  138. and how it bears on our holiness.

  139. So Paul in Ephesians 1.1

  140. addresses the church.

  141. Did you notice how he addresses them?

  142. Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ

  143. to the saints who are in Ephesus.

  144. And last week I told you

  145. that word saints

  146. literally means holy ones.

  147. The holy ones living in Ephesus.

  148. If God had an apostle

  149. and wrote us a letter

  150. it would start this way.

  151. To the holy ones of Christ the King Church

  152. in Kenosha.

  153. Holy.

  154. That's where Paul starts the book.

  155. And then we move to Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  156. verses 3 through 14.

  157. This is an awesome passage

  158. of triune spectacularness.

  159. It's amazing.

  160. God the Father chose us

  161. before the foundation of the world.

  162. That's 1.4.

  163. God the Son redeemed us

  164. by His blood.

  165. 1.7.

  166. God the Spirit indwelt us

  167. as a deposit

  168. guaranteeing the inheritance to come.

  169. 1.14.

  170. I mean it's triune meganness.

  171. And then 1.4

  172. is what I really want you to see.

  173. We learn that from eternity past

  174. from before the foundation of the world.

  175. God chose us in Christ

  176. so that we should be holy

  177. and blameless before Him.

  178. Christian, when God thought of you

  179. in eternity past,

  180. He chose you.

  181. He set His love on you

  182. in order to make you holy

  183. so that you can stand

  184. in His holy presence

  185. without fear.

  186. From eternity past,

  187. God has loved us

  188. into holiness.

  189. So from the very get-go,

  190. we learn from Ephesians 1,

  191. God chose us for holiness.

  192. Holy ones,

  193. God chose you for holiness.

  194. And then in Ephesians 2,

  195. 1-10,

  196. we see how God

  197. makes sinners holy.

  198. He makes sinners holy

  199. by uniting sinners to Christ.

  200. Christ is our holiness.

  201. Christ is our righteousness.

  202. Christ is our life.

  203. And so in chapter 2,

  204. 1-3,

  205. we learn what we were

  206. before becoming Christians.

  207. Things I think we already know of.

  208. Before we were Christians,

  209. we were spiritually dead

  210. because of our trespasses and sins.

  211. Deceived by the world

  212. and held captive by the devil.

  213. We were sons of disobedience

  214. and daughters of disobedience.

  215. We were unholy.

  216. And we were under God's wrath,

  217. children of wrath like the rest.

  218. We were under God's

  219. just and holy wrath.

  220. That's who we were.

  221. And then in chapter 2,

  222. verses 4 and 5,

  223. we hear gospel news.

  224. Verse 4,

  225. but God,

  226. that is one of my favorite

  227. but Gods in the Bible.

  228. But God,

  229. being rich in mercy

  230. because of the great love

  231. with which He loves us,

  232. even when we were dead

  233. in our trespasses,

  234. made us alive together with Christ,

  235. for by grace you've been saved.

  236. God loved us into holiness

  237. by uniting us to Christ.

  238. For those Christians in the room,

  239. you're no longer dead in your sin.

  240. You're alive to God

  241. in Christ.

  242. At the moment you were born again,

  243. you were born with a new appetite.

  244. And not for chocolate.

  245. But you were born with an appetite

  246. for holiness.

  247. You were born with a desire to obey.

  248. It might have been a little desire,

  249. but it was there.

  250. You were no longer a son or daughter

  251. of disobedience under God's wrath,

  252. but you were made new.

  253. You became a beloved child of God,

  254. an imitator of God,

  255. according to Ephesians 5.

  256. So you see what happens

  257. in Ephesians 2

  258. is you go from being a sinner

  259. to a saint,

  260. and that's all because

  261. of God's grace in Christ.

  262. He radically changed us.

  263. We were under God's wrath,

  264. and now we are beloved by God fully.

  265. Lavished in His grace.

  266. This is gospel news.

  267. And then in 2.10,

  268. we see why God did this.

  269. He created you in Christ Jesus

  270. for good works,

  271. which God prepared before Him,

  272. that you should walk in them.

  273. God made us alive in Christ,

  274. who is our holiness,

  275. so that we could walk in holiness.

  276. And then we move on to chapter 2,

  277. verses 11 through 22.

  278. Not only have we been united

  279. to Christ individually,

  280. but those of us who have been

  281. united to Christ

  282. have also been united

  283. to each other.

  284. God has placed us

  285. in a new people,

  286. the church.

  287. According to Paul,

  288. it's an entirely new people group.

  289. Not a Jew,

  290. not a Gentile,

  291. a Christian.

  292. And we read in Ephesians 2,

  293. 19 through 22,

  294. that God has made His people

  295. the new dwelling place

  296. for His Spirit.

  297. We're the new temple.

  298. Holy.

  299. not a temple made with steel

  300. and cement and stone,

  301. but a temple that is made

  302. of sinners

  303. who were made saints

  304. by God's grace.

  305. We are the dwelling place

  306. of the Holy Spirit of God.

  307. We're a holy people.

  308. This is who we are now.

  309. Chosen by God

  310. from eternity past

  311. for holiness.

  312. United to Christ

  313. so that we could live

  314. holy lives.

  315. And we are being united

  316. to one another

  317. as a holy dwelling place

  318. for God.

  319. Holiness.

  320. So when Paul addresses

  321. the Ephesians as saints

  322. in 1.1,

  323. it means a lot.

  324. Set apart for God

  325. in Christ,

  326. a holy people.

  327. Now,

  328. let's turn the corner.

  329. In the middle of Ephesians

  330. is a transition point.

  331. We see it in chapter 4,

  332. verse 1.

  333. I therefore,

  334. a prisoner for the Lord,

  335. urge you to walk

  336. in a manner worthy

  337. of the calling

  338. with which you've been called.

  339. What Paul is doing here

  340. is he's moving

  341. from explaining

  342. who saints are

  343. to explaining

  344. how saints live.

  345. He's moving

  346. from instruction

  347. to exhortation.

  348. He's saying,

  349. I urge you holy ones

  350. to live real holy lives

  351. because you've been really

  352. called and made holy

  353. in Christ.

  354. Live out who you are

  355. in Christ.

  356. You've been made holy,

  357. so live like it.

  358. And so chapters 1-3,

  359. truth after truth,

  360. instruction of who we are

  361. in Christ.

  362. Gospel truth

  363. after gospel truth.

  364. And then chapters 4-6

  365. is going to be

  366. exhortation after exhortation

  367. to holiness.

  368. Here's how you need

  369. to think about it.

  370. Right down 60th,

  371. there is a train trestle.

  372. And often times

  373. in the morning

  374. you see metro trains

  375. cruising over that thing.

  376. Do you have a picture

  377. in your mind

  378. of one of those

  379. big metro locomotives

  380. and one of those

  381. big blue things

  382. with metro across it

  383. you know what I'm talking about?

  384. Here's how you need

  385. to think about chapters 1-3

  386. in Ephesians.

  387. It is the gospel locomotive.

  388. It is the gospel engine.

  389. It is dynamic.

  390. It is powerful.

  391. It changes things.

  392. This is God's grace

  393. unleashed on us.

  394. It makes us new people.

  395. And so the gospel engine

  396. of Ephesians 1-3

  397. drives the holy exhortations

  398. of Ephesians 4-6.

  399. It's dynamic.

  400. It's powered by God

  401. through the gospel.

  402. He changed us by Christ

  403. and it changes the way

  404. we live our lives.

  405. So moving into Ephesians 4

  406. into all these exhortations

  407. were first exhorted

  408. to unity as a church.

  409. Verses 1-16

  410. the church is one body

  411. with the diversity of gifts

  412. given by one God

  413. for the building up

  414. of the body.

  415. It's an exhortation

  416. to holy unity.

  417. And then Ephesians 4

    Ephesians 4:17

  418. verses 17

  419. through chapter 5

  420. verse 21

  421. it's a really big section

  422. and it's exhortation

  423. after exhortation

  424. to live holy lives.

  425. We're exhorted

  426. to put off the old self

  427. be renewed in our minds

  428. and to put on the new self

  429. which is created

  430. in the likeness of God

  431. in true righteousness

  432. and holiness.

  433. What's interesting

  434. is that verses 25

  435. through 425

  436. through 5-2

  437. it seems as though

  438. Paul is emphasizing

  439. holy behavior

  440. within the church.

  441. And then when we get

  442. to 5-3

  443. through 5-21

  444. it seems to have

  445. an emphasis

  446. on our relationship

  447. to people

  448. who are not Christians

  449. those outside

  450. of the church.

  451. Paul says

  452. stop lying.

  453. Paul says

  454. stop stealing.

  455. Paul says

  456. stop being bitter.

  457. Speak the truth.

  458. Give.

  459. Forgive.

  460. Forgive.

  461. Calls us out

  462. of a certain way

  463. of living

  464. as non-Christians live.

  465. And next week

  466. that's where

  467. we're going to pick up

  468. in Ephesians 5

  469. in this section

  470. of how we are

  471. to live

  472. among non-Christians.

  473. We're going to

  474. experience some

  475. exhortations

  476. and some warnings.

  477. But it's all

  478. gospel driven.

  479. Ephesians doesn't

  480. end here.

  481. It continues on.

  482. In Ephesians 5

  483. 22-6

  484. 9

  485. the Apostle Paul

  486. exhorts us

  487. onto a holiness

  488. in relationship

  489. to other people.

  490. In 5

  491. 22-33

  492. wives

  493. are exhorted

  494. to holiness

  495. in relationship

  496. to their husbands.

  497. Husbands

  498. are exhorted

  499. to holiness

  500. in their relationship

  501. to their wives.

  502. In chapter 6

  503. 1-4

  504. children

  505. you're exhorted

  506. to holiness

  507. in your relationship

  508. to your parents.

  509. And parents

  510. you're exhorted

  511. to holiness

  512. in relationship

  513. to your children.

  514. chapter 6

  515. 5-9

  516. holiness

  517. in the workplace.

  518. And then we get

  519. to chapter 6

  520. verses 10-20

  521. all throughout

  522. Ephesians

  523. there's this

  524. repeated command

  525. walk walk

  526. walk walk

  527. walk

  528. walk walk

  529. walk walk

  530. walk

  531. and when you get

  532. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  533. chapter 6

  534. it's stand

  535. stand firm

  536. against the schemes

  537. of the devil.

  538. take a stand

  539. fight the fight

  540. and so where

  541. we're going to end up

  542. is an exhortation

  543. to fight

  544. the spiritual battle

  545. to put on

  546. the armor of God

  547. to stand firm

  548. against the schemes

  549. of the devil.

  550. Christians aren't

  551. jihadists

  552. our battle

  553. is not against

  554. flesh and blood

  555. but against

  556. spiritual forces

  557. and principalities

  558. in the heavenly places.

  559. God provides

  560. everything we need

  561. for that fight

  562. but it's a holy fight.

  563. So there you have it.

  564. A brief overview

  565. of Ephesians

  566. through the lens

  567. of holiness.

  568. God is serious

  569. about holiness.

  570. He's serious

  571. about our holiness.

  572. The first half

  573. truth after truth

  574. of who you are

  575. in Christ.

  576. God has made you

  577. holy in Jesus.

  578. And then the second half

  579. is exhortation

  580. after exhortation.

  581. We are to live out

  582. who we already

  583. have been made.

  584. Holy ones

  585. live holy lives.

  586. So that's where

  587. we're going to pick it up

  588. next week

  589. in Ephesians chapter 5

    Ephesians 5:3–6

  590. verses 3 through 6.

  591. But I just want to see

  592. at the risk of overkill

  593. that you are seeing

  594. not only a connection

  595. in Ephesians

  596. but the kind

  597. of connection.

  598. The nature of it.

  599. Gospel truths

  600. drive

  601. holy exhortations.

  602. Gospel truths

  603. who we are in Christ

  604. drive

  605. holy exhortations.

  606. Who God has made us

  607. in Jesus

  608. changes the way

  609. that we live

  610. our lives.

  611. The Gospel fuels

  612. our holiness

  613. which means

  614. ours is a holiness

  615. by grace.

  616. Let me say it this way.

  617. Just speaking personally.

  618. Because I am

  619. a saint

  620. by grace

  621. I strive

  622. for unity

  623. in the church

  624. Ephesians 4.

  625. Because

  626. I have been

  627. made holy

  628. by the blood

  629. of Jesus

  630. I speak

  631. the truth

  632. in love

  633. to others.

  634. Because

  635. God

  636. and the Gospel

  637. has radically

  638. changed me

  639. brought me

  640. from death

  641. to life

  642. by uniting me

  643. to Jesus

  644. I no longer

  645. steal

  646. but I use

  647. my hands

  648. to give.

  649. Because

  650. God

  651. has

  652. chosen me

  653. from eternity

  654. past

  655. bought me

  656. with the blood

  657. of Jesus

  658. and sealed me

  659. with His Spirit

  660. I don't lie

  661. I speak the truth

  662. I don't steal

  663. I give

  664. I don't get bitter

  665. I forgive

  666. give

  667. because I've been

  668. made alive

  669. in Jesus

  670. I imitate

  671. my holy

  672. father

  673. as a beloved

  674. son

  675. and I love

  676. as Jesus

  677. loved

  678. because I'm

  679. blood bought

  680. made righteous

  681. with the righteousness

  682. of Christ

  683. holy

  684. I love my wife

  685. as Christ loved

  686. the church

  687. because God

  688. has changed

  689. me by His

  690. grace

  691. I raise

  692. my children

  693. to fear

  694. the Lord

  695. because God

  696. has delivered

  697. me from the

  698. kingdom of

  699. darkness

  700. into His

  701. kingdom

  702. of the

  703. beloved

  704. son

  705. I fight

  706. now

  707. I fight

  708. a spiritual

  709. battle

  710. do you want

  711. to know

  712. how serious

  713. God is

  714. about your

  715. holiness

  716. God

  717. shows you

  718. from eternity

  719. past

  720. and then

  721. He sent

  722. His son

  723. to die

  724. for you

  725. and caused

  726. His spirit

  727. to dwell

  728. you

  729. so that

  730. you could

  731. be made

  732. new

  733. so that

  734. you could

  735. walk

  736. in holiness

  737. that's how

  738. serious God

  739. is about

  740. holiness

  741. let's pray

  742. together

  743. God in

  744. heaven

  745. we do

  746. praise you

  747. for being

  748. a holy

  749. God

  750. and we

  751. do

  752. thank you

  753. God

  754. for what

  755. you've

  756. done

  757. for us

  758. in Christ

  759. that you

  760. have brought

  761. us in

  762. and we

  763. no longer

  764. fear

  765. there is

  766. therefore

  767. now no

  768. condemnation

  769. for those

  770. who are

  771. in Christ

  772. Jesus

  773. you have

  774. made us

  775. righteous

  776. in your

  777. sight

  778. you welcomed

  779. us as your

  780. sons and

  781. daughters

  782. God

  783. we thank

  784. you

  785. and we

  786. as a

  787. church

  788. come before

  789. you now

  790. and ask

  791. God that

  792. you would

  793. pour out

  794. your

  795. sanctifying

  796. grace

  797. on us

  798. that you

  799. would make

  800. us holy

  801. experientially

  802. that we

  803. would hear

  804. these

  805. exhortations

  806. in the

  807. latter half

  808. of Ephesians

  809. and say

  810. oh God

  811. thank you

  812. we welcome

  813. it

  814. stir us

  815. up God

  816. we ask

  817. help us

  818. to strive

  819. for holiness

  820. we ask

  821. this in

  822. Jesus name

  823. amen
