  1. As you know, I am Lebanese by birth.

  2. I grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, and came to this country

  3. as a student to study in college.

  4. I remember a very early experience

  5. as a foreigner. I've been

  6. naturalized since then, and I've served two years in the army during the

  7. Vietnam era, so I am a naturalized citizen. But I remember

  8. when I first came, some of my friends

  9. wanted me to go to a baseball game. You realize

  10. that in Lebanon, all that we saw was soccer. Soccer was

  11. the only thing. And so if I went to a soccer

  12. game, I knew what to expect. If I went to a concert,

  13. I'd know what to expect. If I went to a library, I know what to

  14. expect. But they took me to a baseball

  15. game, and I had no idea what on earth

  16. was happening. I mean, I was completely

  17. lost. I mean,

  18. I had no idea.

  19. What are the rules? What are they trying

  20. to accomplish? Why are they doing this?

  21. Why aren't they doing that?

  22. I had no idea.

  23. Some of you may

  24. feel the same way about church.

  25. That is,

  26. you know what to expect in a library,

  27. you know what to expect in a movie theater,

  28. you know what to expect in a concert,

  29. you know what to expect in a class at school.

  30. But what is it that happens in church?

  31. What is church all about?

  32. I also remember the first time I flew

  33. in an airplane

  34. from Lebanon to New York.

  35. I had read about New York

  36. and tried to learn something about the city,

  37. but as we flew over it,

  38. it dawned on me what New York was like.

  39. So there is the Empire State Building,

  40. and there is the Statue of Liberty,

  41. and there is the Rockefeller Center.

  42. And in the airplane,

  43. because we were flying high,

  44. we could see the larger picture.

  45. Not just one block,

  46. but the larger picture.

  47. So what I'm going to do this morning,

  48. Lord willing,

  49. is to give you the larger picture,

  50. a really big picture

  51. of what this church is about.

  52. So if you take out your bulletins at the back,

  53. I wrote some things,

  54. so hopefully you'll be able to follow

  55. what I'm doing.

  56. Ask yourself,

  57. during a typical week,

  58. what different activities happen in this place?

  59. I mean, there are people who shovel snow,

  60. there are people who unlock doors,

  61. there are people who empty garbage cans,

  62. there are people who cook food

  63. for Sunday morning,

  64. there are people who are greeters,

  65. people who take the offering,

  66. people who clean up at the end of the service.

  67. How many activities and tasks take place

  68. in a place like this during the week?

  69. Over 50 activities.

  70. Over 50.

  71. And sometimes maybe one or two persons

  72. do most of the work,

  73. and sometimes if you're in a big church,

  74. you could hire a larger staff.

  75. But there are all these activities to do.

  76. And of course,

  77. if I gave you a list

  78. of 50 things,

  79. most of us wouldn't be able to remember.

  80. They need to be somehow organized

  81. or reflect some sense of order

  82. to remember the 50,

  83. but just an arbitrary list

  84. of 50 people,

  85. it's hard to do,

  86. it's hard to remember.

  87. So what has happened in the church

  88. is that as we have been reflecting on this

  89. for 2,000 years,

  90. several approaches have been done,

  91. and I want to walk you through some of them.

  92. So if you say to yourself,

  93. I can't remember all 50 activities,

  94. is there some other way to organize the data?

  95. Yes, there is.

  96. One way of looking at it

  97. is to ask yourself,

  98. how does the New Testament

  99. describe the church?

  100. And there is no simple answer.

  101. There is a scholar

  102. by the name of Paul Meniere

  103. who did the research for that.

  104. He was paid by Yale University to do it.

  105. And in a book called

  106. New Testament Images of the Church,

  107. he found out that the New Testament

  108. describes the church

  109. in 95 different ways.

  110. 95 different ways

  111. of describing the church.

  112. Well, I mean,

  113. if memorizing 50 is bad,

  114. memorizing 95 is a little bit more challenge.

  115. So he asked himself,

  116. can we organize,

  117. can we group things together,

  118. can we put them in different boxes?

  119. And he came up with six very important ways

  120. of looking at the church.

  121. The church is the people of God.

  122. The church is the flock of God.

  123. The church is the temple of God.

  124. The church are the called out ones,

  125. the saints of God.

  126. The church is the body of Christ.

  127. The church is the bride of Christ.

  128. So if I am thinking about the church

  129. and I think to myself,

  130. we are the body of Christ,

  131. then the next thing I should ask myself,

  132. well, what does that entail?

  133. Well, a couple things for sure.

  134. That we are different.

  135. That there is diversity.

  136. We're not all ears.

  137. We're not all eyes.

  138. I mean, be the weirdest looking body

  139. if you had nothing but eyes everywhere.

  140. You know, we're not all feet.

  141. We're not all hands.

  142. We reflect enormous diversity

  143. and that we need each other.

  144. If you don't believe me,

  145. try to feed yourself through your ear

  146. this afternoon.

  147. You know, see how the cake goes down,

  148. if it will.

  149. We are diverse.

  150. So we look at these various images

  151. and we ask ourselves,

  152. what is the church

  153. and what activity goes with these metaphors

  154. and pictures of the church?

  155. There was a teacher

  156. who was very, very influential.

  157. Almost everybody who studied with her

  158. became professors

  159. in some important Christian universities.

  160. Now, she had students

  161. who were all single

  162. and they were all studying Christian ministry

  163. and they were all preparing

  164. for the pastorate.

  165. So this mean teacher

  166. used to look at them

  167. and used to say,

  168. remember your wife.

  169. Now, you can take that

  170. in one of two ways.

  171. One way it means

  172. if you are single,

  173. if you are single

  174. and you graduate

  175. and you think you're going to get a job

  176. as a single pastor,

  177. forget about it.

  178. Unless you're married,

  179. nobody is going to hire you.

  180. So remember your wife meant

  181. better start dating,

  182. you know,

  183. improve your prayer life,

  184. ask God to bring Rebecca

  185. into your existence.

  186. because if you're single,

  187. you're not going to be employed.

  188. Churches are not looking for single youth pastors

  189. or senior pastors

  190. or lead pastors.

  191. Well, that's not what she meant

  192. with remember your wife.

  193. I'm so delighted

  194. that some of my friends

  195. here at this church

  196. who are either already pastors

  197. or pastors in training

  198. or hoping to become pastors,

  199. I'm so glad that you're all married.

  200. I mean, you know,

  201. that's one prayer list.

  202. I mean, I have to pray for you

  203. in some other way

  204. but not for that one at least.

  205. You have lightened my burden.

  206. But when she said,

  207. remember your wife,

  208. she really meant something else.

  209. She said,

  210. she is saying,

  211. have a healthy church.

  212. Look,

  213. my doctor told me,

  214. either you lose weight

  215. or you're flirting with diabetes.

  216. So the last few months,

  217. I have been trying to lose weight

  218. and I lost 31 pounds.

  219. I won't tell you

  220. how many I've regained

  221. but I have lost 31.

  222. And sometimes

  223. when I become ambitious

  224. or panic,

  225. I think to myself,

  226. the only thing I'm going to eat

  227. is cauliflower.

  228. You know,

  229. eat 40 months,

  230. morning,

  231. lunch,

  232. noon,

  233. dinner,

  234. cauliflower.

  235. And then the doctor says,

  236. come on, Samir,

  237. we want balanced meal.

  238. You know,

  239. cereal,

  240. meat,

  241. you know.

  242. So,

  243. he wants me to lose weight

  244. but do it in a balanced way,

  245. not just broccoli and cauliflower.

  246. She was saying to her students,

  247. if you're going to become pastors,

  248. then have a healthy church,

  249. not a distorted church,

  250. a church out of whack.

  251. And the word that she used was wife.

  252. W-I-F-E.

  253. W,

  254. worship,

  255. I,

  256. instruction,

  257. F,

  258. fellowship,

  259. E,

  260. evangelism.

  261. It is not healthy to go to a church

  262. that the only thing they ever do

  263. is evangelism.

  264. Now,

  265. I am all for evangelism.

  266. The Lord told us to do evangelism.

  267. But he didn't say only evangelism

  268. and nothing else.

  269. That is not healthy.

  270. Or just fellowship.

  271. That's not healthy either.

  272. Or just Sunday school.

  273. Or just worship.

  274. It is a combination of all four.

  275. And so she was saying to her students,

  276. have a healthy, balanced church.

  277. Not some distorted church

  278. with only one activity.

  279. So remember your wife.

  280. She was extremely influential.

  281. She was extremely influential.

  282. Her students are basically my generation

  283. and we have occupied

  284. every important position

  285. in Christian colleges.

  286. But

  287. somebody noticed

  288. that looking at wife

  289. that

  290. the idea of discipleship

  291. is missing.

  292. So where does discipleship go?

  293. Well, you could try to find another word.

  294. You know,

  295. with five letters.

  296. Since I love languages,

  297. I came with a simple solution.

  298. Make the word wife

  299. a verb

  300. rather than a noun.

  301. And then we have

  302. I wifed,

  303. you wifed,

  304. he, she, it wifed,

  305. you wifed,

  306. they wifed,

  307. we wifed.

  308. And we've solved the problem.

  309. Regrettably,

  310. nobody follows my instructions.

  311. God hasn't given

  312. the gift of wisdom

  313. to the rest of people

  314. that he has given me.

  315. So nobody used wifed.

  316. And,

  317. consequently,

  318. people continue to argue

  319. in academic circles,

  320. in my circles.

  321. What is discipleship?

  322. And some think,

  323. well,

  324. discipleship is a product.

  325. Make disciples,

  326. Jesus says.

  327. Some say,

  328. look,

  329. discipleship is a fifth activity.

  330. She left it out,

  331. we put it back in.

  332. And that's what it is.

  333. It's an activity.

  334. I know how to praise,

  335. I know how to disciple.

  336. And then,

  337. some have thought

  338. that maybe discipleship

  339. is a style

  340. of doing things.

  341. I understand lectures,

  342. seminar discussions,

  343. paper presentations,

  344. skits.

  345. There are various ways

  346. of teaching,

  347. and maybe discipleship

  348. is a style of teaching.

  349. Well,

  350. she never addressed

  351. that issue,

  352. but I did want

  353. to bring it up

  354. because discipleship

  355. is important.

  356. And if you want to know

  357. whether discipleship

  358. is one of the things

  359. those three

  360. or all three of them

  361. or et cetera,

  362. I have my wonderful friend,

  363. Billy Nye,

  364. who's an expert

  365. at these things

  366. and corner him

  367. and,

  368. but go gentle,

  369. you know.

  370. Go gentle.

  371. Another way

  372. to look at it

  373. is to ask yourself,

  374. when we do

  375. all these activities,

  376. who is the recipient

  377. of these activities?

  378. Who is our target?

  379. And there are

  380. three targets.

  381. God,

  382. believers,

  383. and the world.

  384. God,

  385. believers,

  386. and the world.

  387. So you can take

  388. something like wife

  389. and say,

  390. worship,

  391. where does that?

  392. To whom is

  393. worship directed at?

  394. Certainly not the world,

  395. heaven forbid.

  396. And certainly not us,

  397. we're not worshipping,

  398. we're not that conceited,

  399. you know,

  400. or grand,

  401. you know.

  402. worship belongs to God.

  403. So,

  404. in trying to think

  405. of what we do,

  406. when it comes to God,

  407. there are two

  408. main activities.

  409. The first one

  410. is to worship God.

  411. When we come to church,

  412. we are here

  413. to worship God.

  414. I was just so delighted,

  415. I was just so

  416. completely delighted

  417. that two of the songs,

  418. I don't mean only two,

  419. but at least two of them

  420. clearly,

  421. helped us think about

  422. praising God

  423. and worshiping him.

  424. that's just appropriate,

  425. that's the right

  426. thing to do.

  427. This is not a restaurant,

  428. this is a church.

  429. And we worship God.

  430. The other major activity

  431. is the greatest commandment.

  432. What shall I do?

  433. Love the Lord your God

  434. with all of your heart.

  435. And Jesus says,

  436. if you love me,

  437. keep my commandments.

  438. So when I come to church,

  439. the least minimum

  440. I expect

  441. is that

  442. I'll have a chance

  443. to worship God

  444. and I have a chance

  445. to say,

  446. Lord,

  447. I really love you,

  448. but you loved me first

  449. and you've,

  450. you know,

  451. you have raised me

  452. from the dead.

  453. You have shown your light

  454. on my life.

  455. I really thank you

  456. for that

  457. and I'm grateful

  458. and I'm learning

  459. to love you.

  460. That is bare minimum.

  461. This is bare minimum.

  462. Now,

  463. we can be mediocre.

  464. I was going to say McDonald's.

  465. I'm sorry.

  466. I don't mean to offend anybody.

  467. We can be mediocre

  468. or we can be good,

  469. but we need to love God

  470. and worship God.

  471. We need to love God.

  472. That is our primary activity

  473. toward God.

  474. So what does it,

  475. what is it for believers?

  476. Well,

  477. English translations use

  478. three different words in English,

  479. but they all mean the same thing.

  480. To strengthen

  481. or

  482. to

  483. edify

  484. or

  485. to build up

  486. and these are all

  487. basically meaning

  488. the same thing.

  489. When we get together,

  490. we are trying

  491. to

  492. edify each other,

  493. strengthen each other,

  494. build each other up

  495. in the faith

  496. and there are numerous

  497. places in the Bible

  498. that says so.

  499. So how do we do that?

  500. How do we edify?

  501. What kind of activities

  502. go on in a church

  503. that are designed

  504. to build up each other,

  505. to strengthen each other?

  506. Discipleship,

  507. clearly,

  508. fellowship,

  509. teaching,

  510. learning to lead

  511. holy lives?

  512. These are all

  513. activities that are

  514. aimed at

  515. believers.

  516. God doesn't need

  517. to be holy.

  518. I need to be holy.

  519. And so

  520. these activities

  521. are designed

  522. to

  523. help

  524. us

  525. grow

  526. so we can be

  527. healthy

  528. rather than

  529. sick and weak.

  530. and what

  531. activity

  532. is

  533. aimed at

  534. the world.

  535. Traditionally,

  536. if you read

  537. about, you know,

  538. 100 years ago

  539. textbooks,

  540. they would say

  541. evangelism

  542. and missions

  543. and you

  544. evangelize

  545. in your own

  546. culture

  547. and you do

  548. missions

  549. in

  550. somebody else's

  551. culture.

  552. So if I am

  553. witnessing to

  554. an Arab,

  555. because I'm

  556. an Arab,

  557. I am

  558. evangelizing,

  559. but if I am

  560. witnessing to

  561. a Chinese,

  562. since I'm

  563. not Chinese,

  564. I am

  565. doing missionary

  566. work.

  567. Well, it may

  568. be helpful to

  569. think of it

  570. as outreach.

  571. We are

  572. reaching out

  573. to the world.

  574. Whether they

  575. speak our

  576. language or

  577. don't speak our

  578. language,

  579. it doesn't

  580. matter.

  581. Whether we

  582. are using

  583. English or

  584. a different

  585. language,

  586. that doesn't

  587. matter.

  588. What matters

  589. is that we

  590. are reaching

  591. out to the

  592. world.

  593. and how

  594. do we

  595. reach out

  596. to the

  597. world?

  598. By

  599. proclaiming

  600. the gospel

  601. and by

  602. showing acts

  603. of kindness

  604. and mercy.

  605. Jesus

  606. says in

  607. Matthew 5

  608. 16 that

  609. we are the

  610. light of the

  611. world and

  612. they will

  613. see our

  614. good works

  615. and glorify

  616. our Father

  617. in heaven.

  618. So it

  619. is worship,

  620. edification,

  621. and outreach.

  622. Let me

  623. try to

  624. make this

  625. manageable.

  626. Here is a

  627. passage that

  628. does a good

  629. job summarizing

  630. what I'm

  631. saying.

  632. The reason

  633. I haven't

  634. stuck to one

  635. passage is

  636. because I've

  637. wanted you to

  638. see all of

  639. Chicago,

  640. all of the

  641. forests,

  642. not just one

  643. tree.

  644. But here is a

  645. fabulous passage.

  646. It's really

  647. fabulous.

  648. It's

  649. fabulous.

  650. New Testament

  651. authors are

  652. just brilliant.

  653. You know,

  654. they're just

  655. fantastic.

  656. I read it

  657. and I think,

  658. gosh, how

  659. can anybody

  660. be so smart?

  661. Well, the

  662. Holy Spirit,

  663. obviously.

  664. So, look

  665. at Hebrews

  666. 13, 15.

  667. If you have

  668. a pencil,

  669. jot down

  670. 13, 15

  671. somewhere.

  672. And then

  673. 13, 16.

  674. So, in

  675. Hebrews 13,

  676. 15,

  677. through Jesus,

  678. therefore,

  679. let us

  680. continually

  681. offer to

  682. God a

  683. sacrifice of

  684. praise,

  685. the fruit

  686. of our

  687. lips that

  688. confess his

  689. name.

  690. Let us

  691. offer to

  692. God the

  693. sacrifice of

  694. praise.

  695. If you're

  696. not sure

  697. what praise

  698. is, let

  699. me recommend

  700. a passage

  701. for you.

  702. The last

  703. five psalms,

  704. Psalms 146,

  705. 147,

  706. 148,

  707. 149,

  708. and 150,

  709. those last

  710. five psalms,

  711. every one

  712. of them

  713. begins in

  714. Hebrew with

  715. praise the

  716. Lord, and

  717. every one of

  718. them ends

  719. with praise

  720. the Lord.

  721. Five psalms,

  722. five times.

  723. And, of

  724. course, praise

  725. the Lord in

  726. Hebrew is

  727. hallelujah.

  728. So, it

  729. begins hallelujah,

  730. and then a

  731. discussion of

  732. praise, and

  733. then hallelujah.

  734. Again,

  735. hallelujah,

  736. hallelujah,

  737. hallelujah,

  738. hallelujah.

  739. So, in

  740. case you're

  741. wondering, oh,

  742. what is

  743. praise like?

  744. Here are

  745. five psalms

  746. to start

  747. thinking about

  748. that.

  749. And so,

  750. the author of

  751. Hebrews is

  752. saying, when

  753. it comes to

  754. God, let

  755. us offer

  756. to God a

  757. sacrifice of

  758. praise, the

  759. fruit of

  760. lips that

  761. confess his

  762. name.

  763. And then

  764. verse 16,

  765. and don't

  766. forget to

  767. do good and

  768. to share with

  769. others.

  770. In the

  771. first one,

  772. we're offering

  773. God.

  774. In the

  775. second one,

  776. verse 16,

  777. it is to

  778. do good and

  779. to share

  780. with others.

  781. For with

  782. such sacrifices

  783. God is

  784. pleased.

  785. Notice he

  786. calls praise

  787. sacrifice, and

  788. he calls

  789. doing good and

  790. sharing with

  791. others sacrifice.

  792. It's the same

  793. word.

  794. That is an

  795. act of

  796. sacrifice, and

  797. this is an

  798. act of

  799. sacrifice.

  800. But one is

  801. directed at

  802. God, the

  803. other one is

  804. directed at

  805. people.

  806. So do

  807. good and

  808. share with

  809. others.

  810. I don't

  811. think that,

  812. I personally

  813. don't think

  814. that giving

  815. somebody a

  816. ride to

  817. O'Hare is

  818. a spiritual

  819. sacrifice.

  820. Maybe I

  821. don't think

  822. so, but

  823. God thinks

  824. so.

  825. God bless

  826. my next

  827. door neighbor.

  828. He has a

  829. huge snow

  830. blower.

  831. I have

  832. poor muscles

  833. who are

  834. getting weaker

  835. as I lose

  836. more and

  837. more weight.

  838. And when

  839. it snows, he

  840. clears, everybody

  841. is on the

  842. block, including

  843. my driveway.

  844. He is doing

  845. good.

  846. He is sharing

  847. his lawnmower,

  848. not lawnmower,

  849. snowblower,

  850. sorry, snowblower

  851. with me.

  852. He's being

  853. kind to me.

  854. But I want

  855. you to think

  856. deeper about

  857. this passage.

  858. Think this.

  859. We praise

  860. God, that's

  861. an activity

  862. directed at

  863. God.

  864. We share

  865. and do

  866. good, and

  867. that's activity

  868. directed at

  869. people.

  870. What is

  871. behind God

  872. and people?

  873. The two

  874. greatest

  875. commandments.

  876. Love God

  877. and love

  878. your neighbor.

  879. So maybe

  880. one way

  881. I show

  882. God that

  883. I love

  884. him is

  885. by praising

  886. him.

  887. And maybe

  888. one way

  889. I show

  890. my neighbor

  891. that I love

  892. him by

  893. sharing and

  894. doing good.

  895. So we

  896. minister to

  897. God with

  898. praise.

  899. We minister

  900. to each

  901. other with

  902. encouragement,

  903. edification,

  904. building up,

  905. strengthening,

  906. and we

  907. minister to

  908. the world

  909. through our

  910. outreach,

  911. through our

  912. good acts,

  913. acts of mercy,

  914. and through the

  915. preaching of

  916. the gospel.

  917. They will

  918. see our good

  919. deeds and

  920. glorify our

  921. Father in

  922. heaven.

  923. Well,

  924. but I'm

  925. keeping the

  926. best to the

  927. last.

  928. If I

  929. worship God

  930. and strengthen

  931. believers and

  932. reach out to

  933. the world,

  934. or I should

  935. say it more

  936. properly,

  937. if our

  938. church,

  939. if we as

  940. a body of

  941. believers,

  942. all of us

  943. together as

  944. believers,

  945. if we

  946. praise God,

  947. strengthen each

  948. other,

  949. and reach out

  950. to the

  951. world,

  952. what is the

  953. result of

  954. that?

  955. Are these

  956. three ends

  957. in themselves,

  958. or are they

  959. means to

  960. still one

  961. more higher

  962. end?

  963. what?

  964. Well,

  965. they are.

  966. I thought,

  967. first of all,

  968. I would check

  969. how many times

  970. that word is

  971. used in the

  972. Bible.

  973. I stopped

  974. after 400.

  975. I thought,

  976. you know,

  977. there's other

  978. things to do

  979. in my life,

  980. and my eyes

  981. are not that

  982. good,

  983. you know.

  984. I suspect

  985. it's about

  986. 600 times,

  987. 600 times

  988. in the Bible.

  989. Where do I

  990. begin?

  991. You know,

  992. shall I

  993. just read

  994. you all

  995. 600 verses

  996. and say,

  997. ah,

  998. there it

  999. is,

  1000. it's in

  1001. the Bible.

  1002. I can't

  1003. do that,

  1004. so I

  1005. thought I

  1006. would choose

  1007. two passages

  1008. that represent

  1009. as a

  1010. sample,

  1011. rather than

  1012. an exhaustive

  1013. list,

  1014. just as a

  1015. sample.

  1016. Turn to

  1017. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  1018. chapter 10,

  1019. verse 31.

  1020. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  1021. chapter 10,

  1022. verse 31.

  1023. chapter 11.

  1024. So whether

  1025. you eat

  1026. or drink

  1027. or whatever

  1028. you do,

  1029. whatever covers

  1030. fairly everything,

  1031. you know,

  1032. so whether you

  1033. eat or drink

  1034. or whatever

  1035. you do,

  1036. do it

  1037. all

  1038. for the

  1039. glory

  1040. of God.

  1041. Do it

  1042. all

  1043. for the

  1044. glory of

  1045. God.

  1046. whatever I

  1047. do,

  1048. putting on

  1049. a shirt,

  1050. I should

  1051. do it

  1052. to the

  1053. glory of

  1054. God.

  1055. Driving

  1056. to my

  1057. work,

  1058. I do

  1059. it to

  1060. the glory

  1061. of God.

  1062. When I

  1063. edify

  1064. believers,

  1065. I'm doing

  1066. it for

  1067. the glory

  1068. of God.

  1069. And

  1070. another

  1071. place where

  1072. you can

  1073. remember

  1074. that,

  1075. the very,

  1076. very,

  1077. very last

  1078. verse in

  1079. the epistle

  1080. to the

  1081. Romans.

  1082. Romans.

  1083. So turn

  1084. to the

  1085. end of

  1086. Paul's

  1087. epistle

  1088. to the

  1089. Romans.

  1090. Look at

  1091. the very

  1092. last

  1093. verse.

  1094. And

  1095. Paul

  1096. ends

  1097. his

  1098. magisterial

  1099. epistle

  1100. with these

  1101. words.

  1102. To the

  1103. only

  1104. wise

  1105. God

  1106. be

  1107. glory

  1108. forever

  1109. through

  1110. Jesus

  1111. Christ.

  1112. Amen.

  1113. To the

  1114. only

  1115. wise

  1116. God

  1117. be

  1118. glory

  1119. forever

  1120. through

  1121. Jesus

  1122. Christ.

  1123. Amen.

  1124. Whatever

  1125. we do,

  1126. the

  1127. ultimate,

  1128. the very

  1129. ultimate

  1130. purpose of

  1131. the church

  1132. is to

  1133. glorify

  1134. God.

  1135. It's

  1136. not about

  1137. us.

  1138. Even

  1139. though we

  1140. are important,

  1141. even though

  1142. he loves

  1143. us,

  1144. even though

  1145. he gave

  1146. his son

  1147. for the

  1148. world,

  1149. it is

  1150. not

  1151. about

  1152. us.

  1153. It

  1154. is

  1155. about

  1156. him.

  1157. And

  1158. I

  1159. think

  1160. these

  1161. are

  1162. indicators

  1163. of a

  1164. healthy

  1165. church.

  1166. I

  1167. know

  1168. that

  1169. as

  1170. one

  1171. of

  1172. the

  1173. elders

  1174. here,

  1175. I

  1176. am

  1177. committed

  1178. to a

  1179. healthy

  1180. church.

  1181. I

  1182. am

  1183. committed

  1184. to a

  1185. church

  1186. that

  1187. reflects

  1188. all of

  1189. these

  1190. things.

  1191. And

  1192. if

  1193. you

  1194. look

  1195. at

  1196. the

  1197. four

  1198. goals

  1199. that

  1200. we

  1201. have,

  1202. they're

  1203. all

  1204. there.

  1205. Fellowship,

  1206. holy

  1207. living,

  1208. burden

  1209. for the

  1210. unsaved,

  1211. prayer,

  1212. these

  1213. are all

  1214. activities

  1215. designed

  1216. to help

  1217. us grow

  1218. and be

  1219. healthy.

  1220. May God

  1221. give us

  1222. the grace

  1223. and the

  1224. strength

  1225. and the

  1226. wisdom

  1227. to do

  1228. it.

  1229. I want

  1230. to pray

  1231. for you.

  1232. You're

  1233. my family.

  1234. Lord,

  1235. Father,

  1236. thank you

  1237. for these

  1238. dear

  1239. believers.

  1240. Thank you

  1241. for those

  1242. who

  1243. belong

  1244. to you.

  1245. Thank you

  1246. because you

  1247. have saved

  1248. us and

  1249. showed us

  1250. your great

  1251. love.

  1252. I pray,

  1253. Lord,

  1254. Father,

  1255. that you

  1256. help us

  1257. as a

  1258. church

  1259. to walk

  1260. in this

  1261. way.

  1262. May you

  1263. give us

  1264. all the

  1265. wisdom,

  1266. the

  1267. godliness,

  1268. the

  1269. devotion,

  1270. the

  1271. desire

  1272. to

  1273. please

  1274. you

  1275. and to

  1276. glorify

  1277. your

  1278. wonderful

  1279. name.

  1280. Thank

  1281. you

  1282. for

  1283. the

  1284. many

  1285. people

  1286. who

  1287. are

  1288. here

  1289. who

  1290. contribute

  1291. to

  1292. these

  1293. tasks,

  1294. some

  1295. big and

  1296. some

  1297. small,

  1298. but all

  1299. important

  1300. and all

  1301. to your

  1302. glory.

  1303. I

  1304. ask this,

  1305. Lord,

  1306. with much

  1307. gratitude,

  1308. in Jesus'

  1309. name.

  1310. Amen.

  1311. Amen.
