  1. If you would turn in your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 5, we've been making our way through Ephesians, if you're not aware, as a church.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  2. We've been in it for some time now.

  3. And the end is in sight.

  4. So if you would look to Ephesians chapter 5, we're going to be in three verses this morning, verses 15, 16, and 17.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  5. Let me begin by saying this.

  6. I don't know if you know this.

  7. But there are 168 hours in a week.

  8. All of us have been given 168 hours in a week.

  9. So the question that I have for you this morning, how do you decide to use your 168 hours?

  10. What informs your decisions of how to spend the 168 hours God gives you this week?

  11. This past week, I came across some interesting facts from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  12. They gathered information from Americans who are employed between the ages of 25 through 54 with children.

  13. So a little cross-section of Americans.

  14. Americans and they processed the information and they came up with the following daily averages of time use.

  15. On average, Americans sleep 7.7 hours a day.

  16. I'd like half of that.

  17. Anybody else?

  18. I'm kidding.

  19. On average, we work 8.7 hours a day.

  20. On average, we spend 2.5 hours a day on leisure.

  21. Or as the Brits say, leisure.

  22. On average, we spend 1.1 hours a day on household tasks.

  23. Again, this is a cross-section of all Americans.

  24. On average, we spend an hour a day eating and drinking.

  25. On average, we spend 1.3 hours a day caring for others.

  26. And on average, we spend 1.7 hours a day on everything else, whatever that may be.

  27. Here's the point.

  28. Each one of us is given 24 hours a day.

  29. 168 hours a week.

  30. And how are you making use of the time that God has given you?

  31. Christian, does the way you spend your time look any different than those who are still walking in darkness?

  32. If you would turn now to Ephesians chapter 5, I'm going to read this passage.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  33. Ephesians chapter 5, 15, 16, and 17.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  34. It's a command.

  35. It's an exhortation.

  36. Look carefully, then, how you walk.

  37. Not as unwise, but as wise.

  38. Making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

  39. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  40. God, in this passage, is calling each of us to take stock of how we're using our time.

  41. Why?

  42. Because being a follower of Jesus changes the way we spend our time.

  43. Why is that?

  44. Because God, by His grace, has radically changed us.

  45. And He has brought us into a knowledge of His eternal plan for all.

  46. So we no longer live for ourselves.

  47. We are seeking to do the will, the eternal will, of our Lord.

  48. And believe it or not, it shows up in our weekly schedules.

  49. This morning, God is calling us to a wise use of our 168 hours that He will give us, Lord willing, this week.

  50. He wants us to leverage our time for His eternal will.

  51. We must walk in light of eternity.

  52. When you prioritize your life according to God's will, you will make the best use of your time.

  53. You will walk wisely.

  54. This morning, I want you to see three points that come from this passage that will help prioritize your life.

  55. The first point is this.

  56. Examine your life.

  57. The second point is you've got limited time.

  58. The third point is this.

  59. God's eternal will prioritizes our daily lives.

  60. So, let's look at this first command here to examine our lives in verse 15.

  61. Look carefully then how you walk.

  62. Look carefully then how you walk.

  63. Examine your life.

  64. What God is commanding us to do here is to pay careful attention to our lives.

  65. Remember that word walk?

  66. Examine your life.

  67. It's Paul's favorite word to describe how you live your life.

  68. We're all on a journey.

  69. We're all traveling.

  70. We're all going somewhere.

  71. And God is commanding us to take focus, to focus in on how we are walking, how we are living,

  72. how we are spending our days.

  73. The sense of that word careful can also be rendered accurately.

  74. And so, this isn't just a general paying attention to your life.

  75. This is carefully paying attention to your life.

  76. This is paying attention to the specifics.

  77. The sense of this little word, look carefully to how you walk,

  78. is taking a careful, detailed etch your life.

  79. And not just one careful look,

  80. but the verb is actually, means kind of an ongoing looking to.

  81. So, ongoingly, keep looking carefully at your life.

  82. God is calling us to regularly examine our life.

  83. Who likes that word examine?

  84. Seriously.

  85. It's not a warm, cuddly word, is it?

  86. Think about it.

  87. A medical checkup?

  88. Also known as an examination?

  89. Who likes having their body measured, poked, and prodded?

  90. Seriously.

  91. A job review?

  92. Also known as an examination.

  93. I mean, who can't just wait to walk into your boss's office

  94. for the annual review?

  95. Seeing the good you've done

  96. and the not so good that you have done.

  97. It's a holding to account.

  98. I mean, think about a tax audit.

  99. I mean, it is tax season, isn't it?

  100. It's a tax examination.

  101. You don't want to get audited, do you?

  102. You don't want to be brought through that.

  103. It's a holding to account.

  104. It's kind of like this.

  105. You know when you look at your check register,

  106. your checking account online,

  107. and you're kind of going through all your purchases,

  108. and you're going through carefully,

  109. you're like, yeah, yeah, that was a good purchase.

  110. No, that wasn't a good purchase.

  111. Yeah, that was a good purchase.

  112. No, that wasn't a good purchase.

  113. You're examining your checking account.

  114. You're paying careful attention

  115. to make sure you're spending your money wisely.

  116. So when Paul is telling us here

  117. to look carefully at our life,

  118. he's saying to examine the way

  119. that you are living your life.

  120. Hold yourself to account,

  121. is what he's saying.

  122. This is a call to self-examination.

  123. This is a call to self-reflection.

  124. Which means you may see something

  125. you don't want to see.

  126. Why is God commanding us to do this?

  127. Why does God want us to pay careful attention

  128. to the way we're living?

  129. Does he just want us to become self-absorbed?

  130. Nah, that's not it.

  131. God knows our tendency,

  132. even as Christians.

  133. Our tendency is to lose focus and drift,

  134. isn't it?

  135. To lose focus and stray,

  136. to lose focus and wander.

  137. God loves us.

  138. And he wants us to stay focused on living

  139. for what matters most.

  140. That's wisdom.

  141. And so when we examine our lives,

  142. we examine our lives

  143. through the lens of wisdom.

  144. So what God is saying to us here

  145. is son, daughter,

  146. look carefully how you live in your life.

  147. Be wise.

  148. Now,

  149. taking stock of your life

  150. is not just a Christian thing.

  151. Socrates

  152. said this,

  153. the unexamined life is not worth living.

  154. Even non-Christians know

  155. that if you don't examine your life regularly,

  156. you'll lose focus

  157. on what's most important

  158. and live for things that are less important.

  159. I mean,

  160. there's a whole industry

  161. seeking to help people

  162. maximize their life

  163. according to what they think

  164. is most important.

  165. Now,

  166. the big difference between Christians

  167. and non-Christians

  168. is what

  169. is

  170. most

  171. important.

  172. What matters most?

  173. And that's why Paul

  174. is introducing the word

  175. wise here

  176. at the end of verse 15.

  177. Look carefully

  178. at how you live in your life.

  179. Not as unwise,

  180. but as wise.

  181. God is saying,

  182. examine your life

  183. to make sure

  184. you're living wisely.

  185. You're walking wisely.

  186. So let me give you

  187. a quick crash course

  188. in the biblical concept

  189. of wisdom.

  190. Our Bibles are packed full of it.

  191. Proverbs jumps out.

  192. As the book

  193. that talks about wisdom.

  194. I mean,

  195. Proverbs 1-7 says,

  196. the fear of the Lord

  197. is the beginning of knowledge.

  198. And then 9-10 says,

  199. the fear of the Lord

  200. is the beginning of wisdom.

  201. Wisdom starts with God.

  202. A wise life

  203. is a life lived with God

  204. at the center of all things.

  205. God governing all that we do.

  206. A wise life

  207. is a life lived dependent upon

  208. and unto God.

  209. Foolishness

  210. is

  211. a life that denies

  212. or disregards God

  213. in everyday decisions.

  214. A life of folly

  215. is a life lived unto me.

  216. The me-centered life.

  217. I am at the center of all things.

  218. All things exist for me.

  219. Now,

  220. if we are honest with ourselves,

  221. brothers and sisters,

  222. that's how we used to live.

  223. We used to live

  224. a life of folly.

  225. We used to be living in darkness,

  226. living ignorant of God

  227. and denying His ways.

  228. That's how we used to live.

  229. And then,

  230. in an amazing display

  231. of God's grace,

  232. Christ shined

  233. into our lives.

  234. Awake,

  235. O sleeper!

  236. And we saw.

  237. We were awakened

  238. to a world

  239. far bigger than our own.

  240. We were awakened

  241. to a life with God

  242. at the center of all things,

  243. not ourselves.

  244. When God saved us,

  245. He delivered us

  246. by the gospel

  247. from a me-centered life

  248. of folly

  249. to a God-centered life

  250. of wisdom.

  251. You know,

  252. the God-centered life

  253. is the good life.

  254. It's the life

  255. of wisdom.

  256. So think of wisdom

  257. as a skill

  258. that's acquired

  259. over the course

  260. of one's life.

  261. And it shapes

  262. one's life.

  263. And here's why.

  264. A wise life

  265. is formed

  266. one godly decision

  267. at a time.

  268. It's living

  269. one decision

  270. at a time

  271. as though

  272. God is at the center

  273. of all things

  274. because He is.

  275. And over the course

  276. of a life,

  277. one acquires

  278. the skill

  279. of godly living.

  280. Living unto God

  281. in all areas.

  282. wisdom.

  283. That's wisdom.

  284. Wisdom is the fruit

  285. of a life fully devoted

  286. to God.

  287. Young people in the room,

  288. whether you're in middle school

  289. or whether you're in high school,

  290. whether you're in college,

  291. Ecclesiastes 12

  292. says this,

  293. remember your Creator

  294. in the days of your youth.

  295. Don't buy the lie

  296. that you can just put it on hold

  297. and come back to it later.

  298. Be wise now.

  299. Wisdom starts now.

  300. Wisdom starts today.

  301. Live unto God today.

  302. what the Proverbs

  303. Solomon sways.

  304. Get it.

  305. Get wisdom.

  306. Get it at all costs.

  307. Make it your love.

  308. Pursue her.

  309. Make her your own.

  310. Be wise.

  311. Live for God

  312. in all things.

  313. What God is urging us

  314. to do here

  315. in verse 15

  316. is to look carefully

  317. and look often

  318. at our lives

  319. to make sure

  320. we're aimed at God.

  321. Living lives unto the Lord.

  322. Walking wisely.

  323. God at the center

  324. of all things.

  325. Now here's what

  326. I want you to feel

  327. this morning.

  328. It's very clear.

  329. You are responsible

  330. to look carefully

  331. at your own life.

  332. You must take stock

  333. of your life.

  334. You must examine your life.

  335. I can't do that for you.

  336. Pay attention to your marriage.

  337. Is your marriage

  338. lived unto the Lord?

  339. Your parenting.

  340. Is it lived unto the Lord?

  341. Your finances.

  342. Is it unto God?

  343. Your entertainment choices.

  344. Is it unto the Lord?

  345. Your personal pursuit of God.

  346. Reading His Word.

  347. Are you praying?

  348. Are they unto the Lord?

  349. Examine your life.

  350. Look carefully

  351. at how you're walking.

  352. Which brings us

  353. to the second point.

  354. You've got limited

  355. time.

  356. You've got limited time.

  357. So what Paul would say is

  358. so make the most of it.

  359. wisdom.

  360. In verse 15,

  361. Paul's writing about wisdom

  362. and then in verse 16

  363. he gets,

  364. oh, so practical

  365. because wisdom

  366. shows up

  367. in the use

  368. of your time.

  369. Making the best use

  370. of the time

  371. because the days

  372. are evil.

  373. Can I just share with you

  374. five things that we all

  375. have in common

  376. regarding time?

  377. All of us in this room.

  378. We all have this in common.

  379. You ready?

  380. We're all Americans,

  381. I believe.

  382. First thing we have

  383. in common is this.

  384. Did you know that

  385. the average American

  386. lifespan is now

  387. 79 years?

  388. It's a little bit

  389. better news for women,

  390. ladies.

  391. You'll live 81 years

  392. on average.

  393. Brothers,

  394. you've got 76 years

  395. on average.

  396. So typically,

  397. Americans live long lives.

  398. The average lifespan

  399. of someone living

  400. internationally around

  401. the world is 61 years old.

  402. So as Americans,

  403. on average,

  404. we live longer.

  405. But,

  406. we read our Bibles,

  407. what Moses writes

  408. in Psalm 90 is this,

  409. the years of our life

  410. are 70 by reason

  411. of strength,

  412. 80.

  413. So it's really

  414. nothing new.

  415. On average,

  416. all of us

  417. have 70 to 80 years

  418. of life to live.

  419. So that's the first thing

  420. we have in common.

  421. The second thing

  422. we have in common

  423. is this.

  424. Though all of us

  425. have 70 to 80 years

  426. on average to live,

  427. none of us

  428. know how many days

  429. we actually have.

  430. None of us

  431. can be sure

  432. of the day

  433. that we will die.

  434. but there is a day

  435. on which you

  436. and I

  437. will die.

  438. In Psalm 139, 16,

  439. David is

  440. crying out to God

  441. and recognizing

  442. that God has set

  443. the number

  444. of His days.

  445. The day of your death

  446. is known by your God.

  447. You know how you have

  448. a birthday?

  449. You have a death day.

  450. And as Americans,

  451. we don't like

  452. to think about

  453. our deaths,

  454. do we?

  455. But unless Jesus

  456. returns in our lifetime,

  457. each of us

  458. will surely die.

  459. The day of our death

  460. is set.

  461. God knows it.

  462. All of us

  463. are going to die.

  464. And yet we don't know

  465. when.

  466. We all have that

  467. in common.

  468. The third thing

  469. that we have

  470. in common.

  471. We tend to think

  472. of our lives

  473. as expanding.

  474. But in reality,

  475. what God says,

  476. from His perspective,

  477. we are one day

  478. closer to our death.

  479. Or unless Jesus returns.

  480. So we're either

  481. one day closer

  482. to our death

  483. or we're one day

  484. closer to Jesus' return.

  485. But

  486. what God says is

  487. the window of your life

  488. on earth

  489. is closing.

  490. How does that sit with you?

  491. Dude, will you stop

  492. bumming me out?

  493. I came to be

  494. with God's people

  495. to get encouraged, brother.

  496. You're bringing me down, man.

  497. You pull up, Salvati?

  498. Come on.

  499. Did you know

  500. that both David,

  501. King David and Moses,

  502. each wrote a psalm

  503. in which they asked

  504. God to make them

  505. know the measure

  506. of their days?

  507. Psalm 39,

  508. 4 through 6.

  509. Read it.

  510. But I'd like to direct you

  511. to Psalm 90,

    Psalms 90:12

  512. verse 12.

  513. The real question is,

  514. why did they ask God

  515. to remind them

  516. of the measure

  517. of their days?

  518. And 90, 12 says this,

  519. so teach us

  520. to number our days

  521. that we may get

  522. a heart of wisdom.

  523. Knowing that your days

  524. are numbered

  525. and that your death

  526. is drawing closer

  527. should focus you

  528. to live

  529. for what matters most.

  530. God.

  531. His plan.

  532. I don't want to bum you out

  533. this morning.

  534. I want to wake you up

  535. this morning.

  536. There's this guy.

  537. He preached

  538. a very famous sermon.

  539. Sinners in the hands

  540. of an angry God.

  541. Anybody name that guy?

  542. Jay Edwards.

  543. Jonathan Edwards.

  544. And before he was

  545. 20 years old,

  546. he wrote these things

  547. called the resolutions.

  548. And so before he was

  549. 20 years old,

  550. he wrote 70 resolutions.

  551. And what they were

  552. were things that he would

  553. review every week.

  554. And they were designed

  555. to help him live

  556. a life of godliness.

  557. They're all kind of

  558. springing out

  559. of God's word.

  560. So can I just read you

  561. a few of them?

  562. Resolution number five.

  563. Remember,

  564. this kid's like,

  565. he's like 19 years old.

  566. Resolved,

  567. never to lose

  568. one moment of my time

  569. but to improve it

  570. in the most profitable way

  571. I possibly can.

  572. Resolution number nine.

  573. To think much

  574. on all occasions

  575. of my dying

  576. in the common circumstances

  577. which attend death.

  578. Ladies,

  579. how about Jonathan Edwards

  580. calling you up

  581. to go on a date?

  582. Hey, let's go to Starbucks.

  583. What do you want

  584. to talk about?

  585. Let's talk about dying.

  586. Alright.

  587. Resolution 17.

  588. Resolve,

  589. that I will live so

  590. as I shall wish I had

  591. when I come to die.

  592. Resolution 43.

  593. Resolve,

  594. never hence forward

  595. till I die

  596. to act as if

  597. I were any way

  598. my own

  599. but entirely

  600. in altogether God's.

  601. Man.

  602. Resolution 50.

  603. Resolved.

  604. That I will act

  605. so as I think

  606. I shall judge

  607. would have been best

  608. when I come

  609. into the future world.

  610. You see how

  611. he's living his life?

  612. He's not afraid

  613. of his death.

  614. His death

  615. was compelling him

  616. to live a life

  617. for what matters most.

  618. The things of God.

  619. The fourth thing

  620. that we have in common.

  621. So the first is

  622. on average

  623. we'll live 70,

  624. 80 years.

  625. The second is

  626. we're not really sure

  627. about that.

  628. The third is

  629. the window of our lives

  630. is closing.

  631. The fourth is

  632. each of us

  633. has between now

  634. and our death

  635. we all live

  636. within the constraints

  637. of a 24 hour day.

  638. All of us.

  639. All of us.

  640. Each of us

  641. works with the same amount

  642. of allotted time.

  643. Each of us

  644. in this room

  645. and then the 7 billion

  646. other people

  647. on the face

  648. of the earth

  649. all live within

  650. a 24 hour period.

  651. Do you know

  652. what that means?

  653. Everybody's deciding

  654. what to do

  655. with their time.

  656. All of us

  657. live within

  658. 24 hour days.

  659. The fifth thing.

  660. The fifth thing

  661. we all have in common.

  662. Each of us

  663. will stand

  664. before Christ

  665. to give an account

  666. for the way

  667. we lived our lives.

  668. how we made

  669. the most

  670. of our time.

  671. Listen to this.

  672. Writing to Christians

  673. in Romans

    Romans 14:10

  674. chapter 14

  675. verse 10

  676. Paul writes

  677. for we

  678. Christians

  679. for we will

  680. stand before

  681. the judgment seat

  682. of God.

  683. Verse 12

  684. So then

  685. each of us

  686. will give an account

  687. of himself

  688. to God.

  689. Again

  690. writing to Christians

  691. in 2 Corinthians 5

  692. 9 and 10

  693. we read this.

  694. So whether we are

  695. at home or away

  696. we make it our aim

  697. to please him

  698. for

  699. we must

  700. all stand

  701. before the judgment

  702. seat of Christ

  703. so that each one

  704. may receive

  705. what is due

  706. for what he's done

  707. in the body.

  708. Brothers

  709. and sisters

  710. the promise

  711. of this final judgment

  712. should not make us

  713. fear for our salvation.

  714. That's not why

  715. these passages

  716. are here.

  717. Our salvation

  718. has been secured

  719. by Christ

  720. by his death.

  721. In fact

  722. our Savior

  723. will also

  724. be our judge.

  725. But what

  726. should be

  727. sobering us up

  728. is that

  729. we will

  730. have to

  731. give an account.

  732. We will

  733. stand before him

  734. for how we

  735. lived our lives.

  736. And we must

  737. take that to heart.

  738. we must

  739. live in light

  740. of that day.

  741. It's what we all

  742. have in common.

  743. Seventy to eight years

  744. we really don't know

  745. the number of them.

  746. The windows closing

  747. each of us

  748. has to deal

  749. living within

  750. twenty four hours

  751. each of us

  752. will have to stand

  753. before Christ.

  754. So what?

  755. What difference

  756. does this make?

  757. each of us

  758. must decide

  759. how we will

  760. spend the time

  761. God has given

  762. to us.

  763. What God

  764. through Paul

  765. is exhorting us

  766. to hear is

  767. make the best

  768. use of the time

  769. however long

  770. you got.

  771. Make the most

  772. of it.

  773. Now when you

  774. hear the little

  775. phrase make the

  776. best use of the

  777. time don't

  778. immediately think

  779. in terms of

  780. efficiency.

  781. Don't think

  782. Stephen Covey

  783. seven habits

  784. of highly

  785. effective people.

  786. Don't think

  787. David Allen

  788. getting things

  789. done it's a

  790. matter of how

  791. much you can

  792. pack into your

  793. life.

  794. That's very

  795. American.

  796. Think in terms

  797. of the aim

  798. of our life.

  799. The goal

  800. of our time.

  801. Did you notice

  802. the contrast

  803. in verse 16

  804. make the best

  805. use of the time

  806. because the days

  807. are evil.

  808. You know what

  809. we're surrounded

  810. by people

  811. living in

  812. darkness

  813. who are using

  814. time foolishly

  815. for evil

  816. purposes.

  817. We don't want

  818. that.

  819. We want them

  820. to come to

  821. Christ and

  822. live their

  823. lives or

  824. something else

  825. but that's

  826. the way it

  827. is.

  828. We are to

  829. make the best

  830. use of the

  831. time for the

  832. glory of

  833. Christ.

  834. Don't think

  835. how much can I

  836. get done in a

  837. 24 hour period.

  838. Think how can I

  839. use this day for

  840. the glory of

  841. Christ.

  842. That's starting to

  843. move in the right

  844. direction of

  845. making the best

  846. use of the

  847. time.

  848. That's wise

  849. living.

  850. It's up to you

  851. to decide how

  852. you're going to

  853. spend your time.

  854. Don't waste

  855. your time.

  856. Live for the

  857. glory of Christ.

  858. Now the question

  859. you may be asking

  860. yourself is,

  861. hey, can you

  862. give me a little

  863. more help than

  864. that?

  865. How do I aim

  866. my life?

  867. Is there something

  868. that can help me

  869. decide what is the

  870. best use of the

  871. time God gives

  872. me?

  873. And the answer

  874. is yes.

  875. Look at verse

  876. 17.

  877. God's will

  878. prioritizes our

  879. time.

  880. Verse 17 says

  881. this.

  882. Therefore, do not

  883. be foolish, but

  884. understand what the

  885. will of the Lord

  886. is.

  887. God's eternal

  888. will prioritizes

  889. our daily lives.

  890. Here's the

  891. connection between

  892. 16 and 17.

  893. Walking wisely

  894. means making the

  895. best use of the

  896. time.

  897. Verse 16.

  898. Verse 17, Paul

  899. tells us how to

  900. make the best use

  901. of the time.

  902. By understanding

  903. what is the will

  904. of the Lord.

  905. He's saying don't

  906. be a fool and

  907. ignore God's will.

  908. You need to

  909. understand what

  910. the will of the

  911. Lord is in order

  912. to make the best

  913. use of the time.

  914. Now that word

  915. understand is a

  916. very interesting

  917. word.

  918. It means more

  919. than just knowing

  920. the facts.

  921. An intellectual

  922. grasp on things.

  923. The word carries

  924. with it this sense

  925. of bringing

  926. things together.

  927. The idea is

  928. an understanding

  929. that knows how

  930. to practically

  931. live out the

  932. will of the

  933. Lord.

  934. How to put it

  935. into practice.

  936. How to live in

  937. light of the will

  938. of the Lord.

  939. So don't you

  940. want to know

  941. what the will

  942. of the Lord

  943. is?

  944. Well it may

  945. not be what

  946. you think.

  947. God's word

  948. reveals God's

  949. will for God's

  950. people.

  951. John, stop.

  952. God's word

  953. reveals God's

  954. will for God's

  955. people.

  956. But what's

  957. interesting about

  958. Ephesians is

  959. how Paul talks

  960. about God's

  961. will.

  962. He talks about

  963. it.

  964. Not in Ephesians

  965. 5.

  966. In Ephesians

  967. 1.

  968. In Ephesians

  969. 1, Paul

  970. references the

  971. will of God

  972. three times.

  973. In verse 1,

  974. in verse 9,

  975. in verse 11.

  976. And what he's

  977. writing about

  978. is different

  979. aspects of

  980. God's plan

  981. of salvation

  982. for the

  983. fullness

  984. of time.

  985. In other

  986. words,

  987. God's plan

  988. for eternity.

  989. God's

  990. eternal plan

  991. to save

  992. sinners

  993. and to

  994. eventually

  995. make all

  996. wrongs right

  997. and reverse

  998. the curse

  999. all through

  1000. Jesus.

  1001. So here's

  1002. what Paul is

  1003. writing in

  1004. verse 17.

  1005. Don't be a

  1006. fool and

  1007. think that

  1008. this life

  1009. is all

  1010. that there

  1011. is.

  1012. live your

  1013. 70-80

  1014. years

  1015. in light

  1016. of God's

  1017. glorious

  1018. eternal

  1019. plan

  1020. to unite

  1021. all things

  1022. in Jesus

  1023. Christ.

  1024. That's what

  1025. he's saying.

  1026. Christ

  1027. lit you up

  1028. to be

  1029. holy.

  1030. Now

  1031. live

  1032. holy

  1033. wise

  1034. lives

  1035. in light

  1036. of His

  1037. eternal

  1038. purposes.

  1039. that is

  1040. the will

  1041. of the

  1042. Lord.

  1043. In other

  1044. words,

  1045. God's

  1046. plan for

  1047. eternity

  1048. informs how

  1049. we daily

  1050. live our

  1051. lives.

  1052. We

  1053. walk

  1054. with an

  1055. eye

  1056. to

  1057. eternity.

  1058. We live

  1059. our lives

  1060. in light

  1061. of this

  1062. greater

  1063. reality,

  1064. God's

  1065. eternal

  1066. plan.

  1067. This is

  1068. an eternal

  1069. perspective.

  1070. life.

  1071. We don't

  1072. get that

  1073. much.

  1074. God's

  1075. word

  1076. gives

  1077. it in

  1078. abundance.

  1079. God's

  1080. plan for

  1081. eternity

  1082. informs our

  1083. decisions.

  1084. So I

  1085. want to

  1086. take a

  1087. shot and

  1088. try to

  1089. help you

  1090. out in

  1091. how this

  1092. makes a

  1093. difference in

  1094. our lives.

  1095. Maybe

  1096. some of you

  1097. in the room

  1098. are asking

  1099. the question,

  1100. should I

  1101. get married?

  1102. Well,

  1103. here's how

  1104. an eye to

  1105. God's

  1106. eternal

  1107. plan makes

  1108. a difference

  1109. with that

  1110. question.

  1111. First,

  1112. you've got to

  1113. realize,

  1114. marriage isn't

  1115. the end

  1116. all.

  1117. There's

  1118. something

  1119. greater than

  1120. marriage.

  1121. The glory

  1122. of Christ.

  1123. Second,

  1124. you need to

  1125. marry someone

  1126. who understands

  1127. the will of

  1128. the Lord.

  1129. Brother,

  1130. sister in

  1131. Christ,

  1132. if you're

  1133. thinking about

  1134. being married,

  1135. do you

  1136. share the

  1137. same aim

  1138. in life?

  1139. Living

  1140. for

  1141. Jesus.

  1142. For those

  1143. who are

  1144. married,

  1145. how does

  1146. an eternal

  1147. perspective

  1148. change your

  1149. marriage?

  1150. Are you

  1151. at an

  1152. impasse

  1153. in your

  1154. marriage?

  1155. Are your

  1156. heels dug

  1157. in?

  1158. Are there

  1159. too many

  1160. wounds that

  1161. are too

  1162. deep?

  1163. Consider

  1164. your

  1165. marriage

  1166. in light

  1167. of

  1168. eternity.

  1169. Wrongs

  1170. done look

  1171. a lot

  1172. smaller and

  1173. less

  1174. significant in

  1175. light of

  1176. God's plan

  1177. for the

  1178. fullness of

  1179. time.

  1180. So when

  1181. you look at

  1182. your marriage

  1183. in light of

  1184. God's

  1185. eternal

  1186. will,

  1187. step back,

  1188. get

  1189. perspective,

  1190. forgive,

  1191. forgive,

  1192. forgive wrongs

  1193. done.

  1194. don't hold

  1195. a grudge,

  1196. don't become

  1197. bitter.

  1198. Live for

  1199. Christ.

  1200. Moms and

  1201. dads,

  1202. what is the

  1203. ultimate goal

  1204. for each of

  1205. your children?

  1206. children.

  1207. I want my

  1208. child to get

  1209. straight A's.

  1210. I want my

  1211. child to be a

  1212. D1 athlete.

  1213. I want my

  1214. child to be

  1215. first chair

  1216. cello.

  1217. Or maybe,

  1218. hey, I really

  1219. just want my

  1220. child to

  1221. potty, be

  1222. potty trained.

  1223. Really, that's

  1224. it.

  1225. That's it.

  1226. Seriously,

  1227. my ultimate

  1228. goal right now

  1229. is that my

  1230. child actually

  1231. sleeps five

  1232. consecutive hours

  1233. so that I

  1234. actually can

  1235. sleep.

  1236. Or maybe

  1237. you're thinking,

  1238. I just want my

  1239. kid to be able

  1240. to move out

  1241. and live on

  1242. their own.

  1243. Let God's

  1244. plan for

  1245. eternity

  1246. inform your

  1247. parenting.

  1248. Parent with

  1249. eternity in

  1250. mind.

  1251. You know what

  1252. is going to

  1253. happen?

  1254. You know

  1255. what it's

  1256. going to

  1257. do?

  1258. He will

  1259. help you

  1260. pick your

  1261. battles.

  1262. It will

  1263. help you

  1264. persevere

  1265. through trials

  1266. because your

  1267. child's greatest

  1268. need is

  1269. Christ.

  1270. Eternity

  1271. informs how

  1272. we see

  1273. other people.

  1274. I'm sure

  1275. you all have

  1276. neighbors,

  1277. you all have

  1278. workmates,

  1279. family,

  1280. many of whom

  1281. are not

  1282. Christians.

  1283. How do

  1284. you think

  1285. about them?

  1286. Do you

  1287. think about

  1288. them in

  1289. light of

  1290. eternity?

  1291. Do you

  1292. think about

  1293. them of

  1294. where they

  1295. will be

  1296. spending

  1297. eternity?

  1298. It's

  1299. compelling.

  1300. As we

  1301. become more

  1302. aware of

  1303. eternity and

  1304. where people

  1305. will spend

  1306. eternity,

  1307. it's going

  1308. to have an

  1309. effect.

  1310. It's going

  1311. to incline

  1312. us to

  1313. raise a

  1314. certain kind

  1315. of conversation

  1316. that can

  1317. be uncomfortable.

  1318. A conversation

  1319. about spiritually

  1320. significant things

  1321. because we're

  1322. concerned about

  1323. where people

  1324. will live

  1325. for eternity.

  1326. let eternity

  1327. inform what

  1328. you buy.

  1329. Eternity puts

  1330. things in

  1331. perspective real

  1332. quick.

  1333. Puts things in

  1334. the proper

  1335. place with the

  1336. right perspective.

  1337. It'll keep your

  1338. stuff from owning

  1339. you.

  1340. It's going to

  1341. rust.

  1342. It's going to

  1343. break.

  1344. It's going to

  1345. run its course

  1346. of usefulness.

  1347. It helps us

  1348. to be in

  1349. this world

  1350. but not of

  1351. this world.

  1352. So how do

  1353. we make the

  1354. best use of

  1355. the time?

  1356. We live in

  1357. light of

  1358. eternity.

  1359. It's real.

  1360. We live

  1361. understanding

  1362. what the

  1363. will of the

  1364. Lord is to

  1365. unite all

  1366. things in

  1367. Christ.

  1368. It's all

  1369. about Christ.

  1370. We live

  1371. for what

  1372. matters most.

  1373. God's will

  1374. has always

  1375. been for us

  1376. to be holy

  1377. and blameless

  1378. before Him.

  1379. So living

  1380. for eternity

  1381. and making

  1382. the best use

  1383. of our time,

  1384. do you know

  1385. what that is?

  1386. That's holiness.

  1387. That's living

  1388. a life set

  1389. apart from

  1390. everybody else.

  1391. It's making

  1392. the best use

  1393. of our time

  1394. for the glory

  1395. of Christ.

  1396. Each of us

  1397. has been given

  1398. 168 hours

  1399. this week.

  1400. Lord willing

  1401. as far as we

  1402. know.

  1403. And what

  1404. will set us

  1405. apart is that

  1406. we leverage

  1407. each day

  1408. for eternity

  1409. is making

  1410. the best use

  1411. of the time.

  1412. I want to

  1413. close with

  1414. one of my

  1415. favorite poems.

  1416. It's written

  1417. by a guy

  1418. named C.T.

  1419. Studd.

  1420. He was a

  1421. stud.

  1422. As you will

  1423. soon find out,

  1424. the name of

  1425. this poem is

  1426. Only One

  1427. Life.

  1428. Eight stanzas

  1429. will be about

  1430. two minutes.

  1431. Two little

  1432. lines I heard

  1433. one day

  1434. traveling along

  1435. life's busy

  1436. way,

  1437. bringing conviction

  1438. to my heart

  1439. and from my

  1440. mind would not

  1441. depart.

  1442. Here they are.

  1443. Only one life

  1444. which will soon

  1445. be passed.

  1446. Only what's

  1447. done for Christ

  1448. will last.

  1449. Only one life,

  1450. yes, only one,

  1451. soon will its

  1452. fleeting hours

  1453. be done.

  1454. Then in that

  1455. day my Lord

  1456. to meet and

  1457. stand before

  1458. his judgment

  1459. seat,

  1460. only one life

  1461. which will soon

  1462. be passed.

  1463. Only what's

  1464. done for Christ

  1465. will last.

  1466. Only one life,

  1467. the still small

  1468. voice gently

  1469. pleads for a

  1470. better choice,

  1471. bidding me

  1472. selfish aims

  1473. to leave

  1474. and to God's

  1475. holy will

  1476. to cleave.

  1477. Only one life

  1478. which will soon

  1479. be passed.

  1480. Only what's

  1481. done for Christ

  1482. will last.

  1483. Only one life,

  1484. a few brief

  1485. years, each

  1486. with its

  1487. burdens,

  1488. hopes,

  1489. and fears,

  1490. each with

  1491. its clays

  1492. I must fulfill,

  1493. living for self

  1494. or in his will.

  1495. Only one life,

  1496. which will soon

  1497. be passed.

  1498. Only what's

  1499. done for Christ

  1500. will last.

  1501. When this

  1502. bright world

  1503. would tempt

  1504. me sore,

  1505. when Satan

  1506. would a victory

  1507. score,

  1508. when self

  1509. would seek

  1510. to have its

  1511. ways,

  1512. then help me

  1513. Lord with

  1514. joy to say,

  1515. only one life

  1516. which will soon

  1517. be passed.

  1518. Only what's

  1519. done for Christ

  1520. will last.

  1521. Give me

  1522. Father a

  1523. purpose deep

  1524. in joy or

  1525. sorrow,

  1526. thy word to

  1527. keep faithful

  1528. and true

  1529. whate'er the

  1530. strife

  1531. pleasing thee

  1532. in my daily

  1533. life.

  1534. Only one life

  1535. will soon be

  1536. passed,

  1537. only what's

  1538. done for

  1539. Christ will

  1540. last.

  1541. Oh, let

  1542. my love

  1543. with fervor

  1544. burn,

  1545. and from the

  1546. world now

  1547. let me turn,

  1548. living for thee

  1549. and thee alone,

  1550. bringing thee

  1551. pleasure on thy

  1552. throne.

  1553. Only one life

  1554. will soon be

  1555. passed,

  1556. only what's

  1557. done for

  1558. Christ will

  1559. last.

  1560. Only one life,

  1561. yes, only

  1562. one.

  1563. Now let me

  1564. say, thy

  1565. will be

  1566. done.

  1567. And when at

  1568. last I'll

  1569. hear the

  1570. call, I

  1571. know I'll

  1572. say,

  1573. twas worth

  1574. it all.

  1575. Only one

  1576. life,

  1577. twas soon

  1578. be passed,

  1579. only what's

  1580. done for

  1581. Christ will

  1582. last.

  1583. Let's pray

  1584. together.
