  1. Children, K through 5th grade, you are now dismissed.

  2. You're going to learn about God's promise to Abraham

  3. and how he fulfilled that with the marriage of Jacob.

  4. Would you open up your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  5. 18 through 21, and I'm just going to read that for us now.

  6. It's the same passage we looked at last week.

  7. Ephesians chapter 5, verses 18 through 21.

    Ephesians 5:18–21

  8. This is the word of God.

  9. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery,

  10. but be filled with the Spirit,

  11. addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,

  12. singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart,

  13. giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father

  14. in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  15. submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  16. What will happen when God pours out His Spirit upon us?

  17. What happens?

  18. What will happen to us?

  19. What will we experience?

  20. If God were to fill us by His Spirit again and again and again,

  21. what happens to a church?

  22. That's what we read right here.

  23. We read what happens to a church.

  24. Last Sunday, I spent a good chunk of our time together

  25. explaining why God prohibits drinking,

  26. getting drunk in particular,

  27. and how that ultimately leads to debauchery.

  28. And I try to paint a couple pictures of the debauched life.

  29. The prodigal son ended up eating with swine.

  30. A Jeep bottomed out, axle stuck in a mud bog,

  31. engine roaring, wheels spinning, mud flying,

  32. but going nowhere, just getting deeper.

  33. If anything, a Jeep stuck like that just gets more and more stuck.

  34. Before we became Christians,

  35. we lived a debauched life, many of us in this room.

  36. We were stuck.

  37. We were lovers of pleasure, hedonists.

  38. Stuck.

  39. Couldn't get ourselves out.

  40. There's another kind of getting stuck.

  41. It's not a hedonist, it's a legalist.

  42. Someone who is a lover of rules and loves to enforce rules.

  43. You weren't stuck in the mire of pleasure.

  44. You were stuck in the mire of self-righteousness.

  45. What turns out to be a very pure mud,

  46. a very clean mud.

  47. But you were stuck nonetheless.

  48. The point is that before we became Christians,

  49. all of us were stuck.

  50. Whether it was the mire of a pleasure debauchery

  51. or the mire of a self-righteous legalism.

  52. But praise be to God.

  53. He didn't leave us there.

  54. For those of us who called on the name of Jesus.

  55. God sent Jesus for us

  56. and He pulled us out of the mire of our own making.

  57. And He radically changed us.

  58. The cross has changed everything in our lives.

  59. God has called us to a new way of living.

  60. We were wretches and He made us His treasure.

  61. We were dead and He made us alive.

  62. All by His grace.

  63. And now God says,

  64. walk, live your lives in a manner worthy of the calling

  65. with which I've called you to.

  66. In Ephesians 5, 1 He says,

  67. be imitators of God.

  68. In 5, 2 He says,

  69. hey, walk like Christ.

  70. Walk in love.

  71. Live upward for the glory of God.

  72. Sacrifice to Him.

  73. And outward, give yourself for others.

  74. Walk in love.

  75. He goes on to say,

  76. walk as children of light.

  77. No longer participating in the unfruitful deeds of darkness.

  78. But now we expose them.

  79. We are the light of the Lord.

  80. He goes on to say,

  81. look carefully how you walk,

  82. not as unwise, but as wise.

  83. And then He says, how?

  84. Making the most of the time.

  85. Understanding the will of the Lord.

  86. And we know from Ephesians,

  87. the will of the Lord is this wonderful,

  88. glorious plan of redemption.

  89. It's an eternal plan.

  90. God uniting all things in Christ,

  91. including us.

  92. We live our lives in light of that now.

  93. Sounds great.

  94. Sign me up.

  95. Where do I sign?

  96. This morning I want to ask the question,

  97. not of where you sign,

  98. but how does that happen?

  99. How does a Christian live like that?

  100. Where does that power come from?

  101. How do you live a life of Christ-like holiness?

  102. We live for Christ

  103. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  104. We live for Christ.

  105. We live for Christ

  106. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  107. The Holy Spirit is present with us

  108. to strengthen us

  109. to live for Christ.

  110. It's by His might

  111. we walk in a manner worthy of our Lord.

  112. The Holy Spirit is an ongoing,

  113. empowering presence

  114. in the life of a Christian

  115. that results in the praise of Christ.

  116. How do we live for Christ?

  117. We live by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  118. And so this morning,

  119. what I want you to see

  120. from Ephesians 5, 18-21

  121. are two things.

  122. We're going to focus on the command,

  123. be filled by the Spirit.

  124. And I want you to understand

  125. what it means

  126. to be filled by the Spirit.

  127. And then the second thing

  128. we're going to look at this morning

  129. is the effects

  130. of being filled by the Spirit.

  131. When the Spirit fills His people,

  132. He gets stuff done.

  133. Things happen.

  134. And we're going to see that

  135. right out of our text.

  136. So, first thing.

  137. The command.

  138. Be filled by the Spirit.

  139. Ephesians 5, 18.

  140. And do not get drunk with wine,

  141. for that's debauchery,

  142. a giant waste of time,

  143. talent, and treasure.

  144. But be filled with the Spirit.

  145. And that results

  146. in something wonderful.

  147. There's four things

  148. I want to point out to you

  149. as we look at this command.

  150. I want you to see

  151. how the Spirit of God

  152. is present in His people.

  153. We're going to see

  154. that He's personally present,

  155. that He's purposefully present,

  156. that He's powerfully present,

  157. and that He is perpetually present

  158. in the life of a believer.

  159. You want to dig in?

  160. The Holy Spirit is personally present.

  161. In the Gospel of John,

  162. in chapters 14, 15, and 16,

  163. Jesus refers to the person

  164. of the Holy Spirit

  165. with a very interesting name.

  166. He refers to Him in English

  167. as the helper,

  168. or some of your versions might say

  169. advocate,

  170. counselor.

  171. And when Jesus talks

  172. about the Holy Spirit this way,

  173. He talks about the Holy Spirit

  174. not as an it,

  175. not the helper as an it,

  176. the helper as a who,

  177. the helper as a he.

  178. Remember,

  179. the Holy Spirit's not an it,

  180. He is a who,

  181. and He's not just any who,

  182. He is the third person

  183. of the Trinity.

  184. He's the divine who.

  185. He is the third person

  186. of the Trinity.

  187. He's distinct,

  188. yet fully God.

  189. So this Greek word for helper

  190. is the Greek word paraclete,

  191. not parakeet.

  192. Paraclete.

  193. And here's what that means.

  194. It literally means

  195. one who is called alongside

  196. to help.

  197. One who is called alongside

  198. to help.

  199. And so when Jesus in John 14,

  200. 15, and 16

  201. is talking about the Holy Spirit,

  202. He's talking about the helper,

  203. and He's referring to Him,

  204. this one who I will send,

  205. who will come alongside

  206. and help you,

  207. He's going to do something.

  208. It carries a double sense

  209. of presence,

  210. immediacy,

  211. as well as aid,

  212. strengthening.

  213. strengthening.

  214. The paraclete,

  215. the Holy Spirit,

  216. is present

  217. in order to

  218. strengthen.

  219. I have befriended

  220. a neighbor of mine

  221. who is a personal trainer.

  222. And the first time I met him,

  223. it's a very funny story,

  224. I will save it.

  225. But a personal trainer

  226. makes their living

  227. by being personally present

  228. in someone's life

  229. to help transform them.

  230. to help them lose some weight,

  231. to gain some muscle mass,

  232. to be fit.

  233. Think of the Holy Spirit

  234. as the ultimate

  235. personal trainer.

  236. Not just for individual Christians,

  237. but for entire churches.

  238. The Holy Spirit is seeking

  239. to be present in our lives

  240. to help us,

  241. strengthen us,

  242. to follow Christ,

  243. to obey Him,

  244. and be like Him.

  245. Jesus sent Him

  246. to be present with us.

  247. And when we first

  248. became Christians,

  249. we learned from Romans 8

  250. and Ephesians 2

  251. that the Holy Spirit

  252. indwelt us.

  253. He came to reside in us.

  254. And so when we talk about

  255. being filled by the Spirit,

  256. we're not talking about

  257. the Holy Spirit

  258. coming back into us

  259. again and again and again.

  260. It's more like this.

  261. The Spirit who's already in us

  262. is saying,

  263. I'm here!

  264. I'm here!

  265. And I've got something to do.

  266. And when we're filled

  267. by the Spirit,

  268. the Spirit is letting us know

  269. He's there.

  270. And it has an effect.

  271. There's a very significant purpose

  272. to His presence in us.

  273. I just want to help you see

  274. that He's actually present with us.

  275. Jesus has sent Him to us.

  276. He is with us.

  277. And He's a person.

  278. He's the paraclete.

  279. He's personally present

  280. and He's purposefully present.

  281. I pointed you last week

  282. to Ephesians chapter 3

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  283. and I tried to make the case

  284. that the Holy Spirit

  285. is desirous to fill us

  286. with the fullness of God.

  287. Do you remember?

  288. The Apostle Paul prays

  289. for these Christians in Ephesus.

  290. Remember what he prays?

  291. He prays that they would be strengthened

  292. with power

  293. through the Holy Spirit.

  294. So that,

  295. verse 17,

  296. Christ may dwell

  297. in their hearts

  298. by faith.

  299. And it amounts to,

  300. in verse 19,

  301. being filled with the fullness

  302. of God.

  303. God.

  304. The Holy Spirit's

  305. God of purpose.

  306. He empowers us

  307. in such a way

  308. that Christ dwells

  309. in our hearts

  310. by faith.

  311. Here's what it's getting at.

  312. The Holy Spirit

  313. who's present with us,

  314. He's present with us

  315. to make us aware

  316. of Christ's presence.

  317. Christ's dwelling in us.

  318. That's what the Apostle prays

  319. for these Christians.

  320. Paul is praying

  321. that the Holy Spirit

  322. would make known

  323. His powerful presence

  324. for the purpose

  325. of these Christians

  326. and us

  327. being aware of Christ.

  328. Last week,

  329. I pointed you

  330. to John 16, 14.

  331. And this is, again,

  332. that passage where

  333. Jesus is talking about

  334. the paraclete.

  335. And Jesus says,

  336. in 16, 14,

  337. He will glorify me.

  338. When I send Him to you,

  339. He,

  340. the Helper,

  341. will glorify me.

  342. He will be with you

  343. to strengthen you,

  344. to spotlight me,

  345. to make much of me.

  346. And so,

  347. the Spirit of God

  348. is present personally

  349. with us

  350. for a purpose.

  351. To spotlight Jesus

  352. in our midst.

  353. To make much of Christ

  354. that we would become aware

  355. of Christ in our midst,

  356. dwelling among us.

  357. I want to help you

  358. see something.

  359. In that passage

  360. in Ephesians 3,

  361. you can't help but realize

  362. when you're reading

  363. through it

  364. that Paul is praying

  365. that these Christians

  366. would actually experience

  367. the presence of Christ

  368. through the power

  369. of the Spirit.

  370. He wants them

  371. to know.

  372. He wants them

  373. to experience

  374. the reality

  375. of God's

  376. multi-dimensional love

  377. for them in Christ.

  378. And so,

  379. here's what I want you

  380. to see in terms

  381. of the Helper.

  382. The Holy Spirit

  383. is not just trying

  384. to convince us

  385. that these things

  386. are true.

  387. The Holy Spirit

  388. is seeking

  389. to help us

  390. see the reality

  391. of them.

  392. For us to experience

  393. the reality

  394. of Christ.

  395. The reality

  396. of His love

  397. for us.

  398. The Holy Spirit

  399. is the divine

  400. realizer.

  401. He makes Christ

  402. real to us.

  403. He makes His Word

  404. real to us.

  405. Even,

  406. He makes our sin

  407. real to us.

  408. He brings it home.

  409. The Holy Spirit

  410. is personally present

  411. and He is purposefully present

  412. looking to

  413. make Christ

  414. real to us.

  415. And the Holy Spirit

  416. is powerfully present.

  417. He's powerful.

  418. When He fills us,

  419. when He makes

  420. His presence

  421. known to us,

  422. we'll actually

  423. be made aware

  424. of Christ.

  425. But when He comes

  426. and fills us afresh,

  427. you know

  428. what's going to happen?

  429. In His power,

  430. He's going to make us

  431. holy.

  432. He's going to

  433. conform us

  434. to the image

  435. of Jesus.

  436. Jesus is the aim.

  437. He has what

  438. we need

  439. to be made

  440. like Christ.

  441. He's going to

  442. unite us.

  443. He has what

  444. we need

  445. not only to make us

  446. holy,

  447. but to unite us,

  448. to one-ify us.

  449. To make us

  450. one body

  451. under our

  452. one head,

  453. Jesus.

  454. And the Holy Spirit

  455. is also with us

  456. powerfully

  457. to enable

  458. our witness.

  459. if you were

  460. to read

  461. through the

  462. Gospel of Luke

  463. and the

  464. book of Acts,

  465. what you will

  466. read over and

  467. over and over

  468. again,

  469. is this

  470. filling by

  471. the Spirit

  472. of God

  473. on His people

  474. and they

  475. proclaim.

  476. They make

  477. known

  478. Christ.

  479. They can't

  480. help but

  481. speak of Him

  482. to non-Christians.

  483. The Holy Spirit

  484. emboldens

  485. our witness.

  486. He gives us

  487. power to

  488. proclaim

  489. the Holy Spirit

  490. is present

  491. personally,

  492. purposefully,

  493. powerfully,

  494. and perpetually.

  495. The verb

  496. to be filled

  497. in Ephesians 5.18

  498. actually means

  499. to be

  500. ongoingly

  501. and repeatedly

  502. filled with

  503. the fullness

  504. of God

  505. by the Spirit

  506. of God.

  507. That's what

  508. He's getting at.

  509. And what's

  510. clear from

  511. the verb

  512. itself is

  513. we don't

  514. do the

  515. filling.

  516. We don't

  517. fill ourselves

  518. with the

  519. fullness of

  520. God.

  521. That's what

  522. the Holy Spirit

  523. does.

  524. He fills

  525. us with

  526. the fullness

  527. of God.

  528. And what that

  529. means is this.

  530. We are being

  531. commanded,

  532. exhorted in

  533. Ephesians 5.18

  534. to be

  535. acted

  536. upon,

  537. to be

  538. moved

  539. upon,

  540. to be

  541. moved

  542. upon

  543. by the

  544. Holy Spirit.

  545. That's

  546. what Paul

  547. is saying.

  548. Don't get

  549. drunk with

  550. wine that

  551. leads to

  552. debauchery.

  553. Don't be

  554. influenced

  555. by booze

  556. like that.

  557. Be

  558. influenced

  559. by the

  560. Holy Spirit.

  561. Come

  562. under

  563. His

  564. sway.

  565. Come

  566. under

  567. His

  568. perpetual

  569. powerful

  570. presence.

  571. Do you

  572. know what

  573. this amounts

  574. to?

  575. This

  576. amounts

  577. to a

  578. call

  579. to

  580. dependence

  581. on the

  582. Spirit.

  583. we are

  584. being

  585. commanded

  586. here to

  587. over and

  588. over and

  589. over again

  590. be filled

  591. by the

  592. Spirit.

  593. Be filled

  594. by the

  595. Spirit.

  596. Do you

  597. know why

  598. He's

  599. commanding

  600. it that

  601. way?

  602. Because

  603. we need

  604. the Spirit

  605. over and

  606. over and

  607. over again.

  608. He alone

  609. has what

  610. we need

  611. in order

  612. to walk

  613. with Jesus

  614. faithfully.

  615. And so

  616. therefore we

  617. need Him

  618. day after

  619. day after

  620. day.

  621. We need

  622. the Spirit

  623. present in

  624. our lives

  625. bringing

  626. about a

  627. power to

  628. walk and

  629. follow Jesus.

  630. We see

  631. that ongoing

  632. dependence

  633. played out

  634. in other

  635. spots.

  636. Romans 12

  637. 1 and 2

  638. there's a

  639. command to

  640. offer

  641. yourselves

  642. as a

  643. living

  644. sacrifice

  645. to God

  646. over and

  647. over and

  648. over and

  649. over again.

  650. To offer

  651. yourself

  652. repeatedly

  653. to God.

  654. In

  655. Galatians 5

  656. we're

  657. commanded to

  658. walk by

  659. the Spirit

  660. and that

  661. is a

  662. continual

  663. command.

  664. We're to

  665. walk and

  666. walk and

  667. walk and

  668. walk.

  669. Independence

  670. on the

  671. Spirit.

  672. We're to

  673. be led

  674. by the

  675. Spirit.

  676. Romans 8

  677. again and

  678. again and

  679. again.

  680. We are

  681. dependent on

  682. the Spirit.

  683. John 15

  684. Jesus is

  685. divine.

  686. We are the

  687. branches and

  688. the Holy

  689. Spirit empowers

  690. us through

  691. abiding in

  692. Jesus.

  693. Jesus.

  694. We have an

  695. ongoing need

  696. to be for

  697. the Holy

  698. Spirit's

  699. empowering

  700. presence.

  701. Filling

  702. after filling

  703. the Holy

  704. Spirit making

  705. himself known

  706. to us by

  707. aiming us

  708. at Christ.

  709. We cannot

  710. supply for

  711. ourselves what

  712. only the

  713. Spirit can.

  714. We need

  715. Him.

  716. The Holy

  717. Spirit is not

  718. optional.

  719. We depend

  720. on Him.

  721. He's present

  722. with us.

  723. Jesus.

  724. Remember the

  725. quote I read

  726. last week.

  727. With the

  728. indwelling of

  729. the Spirit at

  730. the moment of

  731. conversion, each

  732. Christian has

  733. all of the

  734. Spirit.

  735. But the

  736. command to be

  737. filled by the

  738. Spirit enables

  739. the Spirit to

  740. have all of

  741. the believer.

  742. We are

  743. offering ourselves

  744. over and over

  745. and over again to

  746. the Spirit who

  747. dwells in us

  748. fully.

  749. We're just

  750. giving all of

  751. ourselves to

  752. Him over and

  753. over and over

  754. again.

  755. Be filled by

  756. the Spirit.

  757. He is

  758. perpetually

  759. present.

  760. The

  761. paraclete

  762. is

  763. personally,

  764. purposefully,

  765. powerfully,

  766. perpetually

  767. present in

  768. God's people to

  769. point us to

  770. the person of

  771. Christ, the

  772. Prince of

  773. Peace.

  774. Amen.

  775. Here's what it

  776. gets at.

  777. The Christian

  778. life, the

  779. Christian walk,

  780. walk in a

  781. manner worthy

  782. of the

  783. calling to

  784. which you've

  785. been called,

  786. is an

  787. ongoing and

  788. active dependence

  789. upon the

  790. empowering

  791. presence of

  792. the Holy

  793. Spirit.

  794. The Spirit

  795. of God

  796. actively

  797. empowers

  798. Christians to

  799. live lives

  800. that please

  801. God.

  802. So it begs

  803. the question,

  804. what do we

  805. expect?

  806. What should

  807. we expect

  808. from the

  809. Spirit present

  810. with us

  811. with us

  812. ongoingly?

  813. What does

  814. that look

  815. like?

  816. How does

  817. that play

  818. out?

  819. And in

  820. verses 19,

  821. 20, and

  822. 21, we

  823. see the

  824. Spirit-filled

  825. life of a

  826. church.

  827. When the

  828. Spirit fills

  829. a people of

  830. God, it

  831. has a

  832. Christ-exalting

  833. effect.

  834. So we've

  835. looked at

  836. point one

  837. with the

  838. presence of

  839. the Holy

  840. Spirit.

  841. We need

  842. Him.

  843. Two,

  844. point to

  845. the corporate

  846. effects of

  847. being filled

  848. by the

  849. Spirit.

  850. Spirit

  851. effects.

  852. There's four

  853. of them.

  854. When the

  855. Spirit fills

  856. His people,

  857. God's people

  858. address one

  859. another in a

  860. certain way.

  861. They speak to

  862. each other in

  863. a certain way.

  864. Spirit effect

  865. number two.

  866. When the

  867. Spirit of

  868. God fills

  869. His people,

  870. God's people

  871. sing and

  872. make melody

  873. in their

  874. heart to

  875. the Lord.

  876. When the

  877. Spirit of

  878. God fills

  879. His people,

  880. effect number

  881. three, God's

  882. people give

  883. thanks to

  884. God all the

  885. time for

  886. everything.

  887. When God's

  888. Spirit fills

  889. His people,

  890. effect number

  891. four, God's

  892. people submit

  893. to one another

  894. out of reverence

  895. for Christ.

  896. Let's unpack

  897. these a little

  898. bit.

  899. Hey, can I

  900. just say this?

  901. Being filled

  902. by the

  903. Spirit is

  904. not some

  905. kind of

  906. carnival

  907. sideshow of

  908. bizarre

  909. behavior.

  910. It is

  911. building the

  912. church.

  913. It's uniting

  914. us together.

  915. Do you know

  916. how?

  917. Do you know

  918. what to look

  919. for to know

  920. that if the

  921. Spirit is moving

  922. in a church,

  923. is Christ

  924. being exalted?

  925. God's

  926. wanted to

  927. be

  928. wanted to

  929. be

  930. wanted to

  931. be

  932. so when the

  933. Holy Spirit

  934. fills us,

  935. look at this

  936. first effect.

  937. We address one

  938. another in a

  939. certain way.

  940. 19a, the

  941. first half of

  942. 19.

  943. Addressing one

  944. another in

  945. psalms and hymns

  946. and spiritual

  947. songs.

  948. Hey, when we're

  949. filled by the

  950. Spirit, we don't

  951. trash talk each

  952. other.

  953. We don't

  954. trash talk each

  955. other.

  956. We don't tear

  957. each other down

  958. with our

  959. speech.

  960. That actually,

  961. Ephesians 4.30,

  962. grieves the

  963. Holy Spirit.

  964. That's

  965. counterproductive

  966. to what the

  967. Spirit is seeking

  968. to do in us.

  969. That's resisting

  970. the Spirit.

  971. What we do

  972. do, though,

  973. is we speak

  974. words that

  975. are intended

  976. to build

  977. up.

  978. And notice

  979. the content

  980. of these

  981. Spirit-filled

  982. speakings.

  983. Psalms, hymns,

  984. spiritual psalms,

  985. songs.

  986. This is not

  987. some kind of

  988. apostolic

  989. limitation saying

  990. you can only

  991. speak to each

  992. other this way

  993. when you're

  994. filled by the

  995. Spirit.

  996. It's more like

  997. examples.

  998. Hey, expect

  999. this.

  1000. Psalms, hymns,

  1001. spiritual songs,

  1002. Bible,

  1003. Scripture,

  1004. being spoken

  1005. to one another.

  1006. You need to

  1007. realize what

  1008. the Psalms,

  1009. hymns,

  1010. spiritual songs

  1011. have in common.

  1012. They're different

  1013. ways of

  1014. communicating truth

  1015. about God

  1016. to build

  1017. somebody up

  1018. for the

  1019. glory of

  1020. Christ.

  1021. That's what

  1022. they are.

  1023. That's what

  1024. they all have

  1025. in common.

  1026. They're building

  1027. up words.

  1028. They're truthful

  1029. words.

  1030. When the

  1031. Spirit of God

  1032. fills us,

  1033. we speak out

  1034. of an overflow

  1035. of the fullness

  1036. of God's

  1037. presence in

  1038. our heart,

  1039. and it ends

  1040. up building

  1041. people up.

  1042. It's edifying

  1043. speech.

  1044. Colossians is a

  1045. parallel book

  1046. to Ephesians.

  1047. Colossians 3.16

  1048. is very much

  1049. paralleled with

  1050. this passage

  1051. we're in right

  1052. now.

  1053. This is what

  1054. Paul says to

  1055. the Colossians.

  1056. He writes,

  1057. let the word of

  1058. Christ dwell in

  1059. you richly.

  1060. Let the word of

  1061. Christ dwell in

  1062. you richly.

  1063. Be filled with

  1064. the Spirit.

  1065. Let the word of

  1066. Christ dwell in

  1067. you richly.

  1068. When we're filled

  1069. by the Spirit,

  1070. we speak psalms,

  1071. hymns,

  1072. spiritual songs.

  1073. We speak Bible

  1074. to one another,

  1075. ultimately with the

  1076. aim to Jesus so

  1077. that we're built

  1078. up.

  1079. Isn't that good?

  1080. It's not rocket

  1081. science.

  1082. It's not

  1083. mysterious.

  1084. Where does it

  1085. all begin?

  1086. It begins in

  1087. private.

  1088. Morning after

  1089. morning, we

  1090. open our Bibles

  1091. and we call out

  1092. to God.

  1093. We say things

  1094. like, oh God,

  1095. meet me in your

  1096. word today.

  1097. You have your

  1098. Bible open.

  1099. I had my Bible

  1100. open this morning,

  1101. Psalm 61.

  1102. One.

  1103. Spirit of God,

  1104. impress these

  1105. words upon my

  1106. heart.

  1107. Make these

  1108. words, your

  1109. words, my

  1110. words, God.

  1111. Press them in

  1112. to me, God.

  1113. Make them real

  1114. to me, God.

  1115. I can't live

  1116. by food alone.

  1117. I need your

  1118. word, God.

  1119. God.

  1120. When individual

  1121. members of a

  1122. church

  1123. personally seek

  1124. God like this,

  1125. they open up

  1126. their Bibles in

  1127. their prayer

  1128. closets and

  1129. they cry out,

  1130. oh God,

  1131. impress your

  1132. word upon me.

  1133. You know what?

  1134. They are

  1135. positioning

  1136. themselves to

  1137. be used by

  1138. God later on

  1139. to address

  1140. others with a

  1141. timely word.

  1142. Did you notice

  1143. the addressing

  1144. one another?

  1145. The context of

  1146. all this stuff is

  1147. in a corporate

  1148. gathering.

  1149. The church

  1150. together,

  1151. we're to

  1152. address one

  1153. another with

  1154. these kinds of

  1155. words and the

  1156. intended effect is

  1157. to build up

  1158. the body.

  1159. This can play

  1160. out in a variety

  1161. of ways.

  1162. You're talking

  1163. with somebody

  1164. one-on-one.

  1165. I read this

  1166. great psalm.

  1167. I think it

  1168. might encourage

  1169. you.

  1170. During a family

  1171. devotion, one of

  1172. the ways that we

  1173. do our family

  1174. devotions is I

  1175. have my devotions

  1176. in the morning

  1177. and I call it

  1178. the king penguin

  1179. technique.

  1180. I read my

  1181. Bible and I'm

  1182. kind of digesting

  1183. this myself and

  1184. I gather around

  1185. our table and I

  1186. kind of puke up

  1187. a little kind of

  1188. processed Bible

  1189. meditation for my

  1190. kids.

  1191. It's very

  1192. nutritious, trust

  1193. me.

  1194. This happens

  1195. in small groups.

  1196. This happens on

  1197. ministry teams.

  1198. And it happens on

  1199. a Sunday morning.

  1200. Many of you were

  1201. here last week.

1202. I'm not sure if you

  1203. realize what

  1204. happened.

  1205. A dear sister came

  1206. down to me.

  1207. By the way, I

  1208. talked to her this

  1209. morning and this is

  1210. okay to share with

  1211. you all.

  1212. Well, a dear sister

  1213. came down to me

  1214. during the service

  1215. and she very humbly

  1216. asked if she could

  1217. share a passage,

  1218. Revelation chapter

  1219. five, share it

  1220. with the church.

  1221. I was really

  1222. encouraged that she

  1223. would just take that

  1224. step of faith and

  1225. come down.

  1226. God had impressed

  1227. something on her

  1228. during our first

  1229. song together.

  1230. And her sense was

  1231. God wants me to

  1232. share this with the

  1233. church.

  1234. church.

  1235. Now typically, just

  1236. to make you aware,

  1237. when a person

  1238. approaches me seeking

  1239. to share something on

  1240. a Sunday morning, I'm

  1241. exercising discernment.

  1242. I'm asking some

  1243. questions.

  1244. Do I know this

  1245. person?

  1246. Are they a believer?

  1247. Does their heart seem

  1248. right in this?

1249. What do they want to

  1250. share?

  1251. Will it edify?

  1252. Is it timely?

  1253. Yes, yes, and yes,

  1254. and yes, and yes.

  1255. Our sister read

  1256. Revelation five.

  1257. And I don't remember

  1258. it.

  1259. Do you remember

  1260. that?

  1261. It was sweet.

  1262. It was edifying.

  1263. It was all about

  1264. Jesus.

  1265. And right in the

  1266. middle of Revelation

  1267. five is a spiritual

  1268. song.

  1269. About.

  1270. The lamb.

  1271. Brothers and

  1272. sisters.

  1273. Brothers, it

  1274. should be no

  1275. surprise to us that

  1276. the Holy Spirit, who's

  1277. actively present in

  1278. our midst, is seeking

1279. to build us up this

  1280. way.

  1281. No surprise.

  1282. In fact, what I

  1283. would say is, we

  1284. want that.

  1285. We want that.

  1286. We want people to

  1287. share what God puts

  1288. on their hearts on

  1289. Sunday mornings using

  1290. this microphone right

1291. here to build up his

  1292. people.

  1293. It's an active

  1294. ministry of the

  1295. Holy Spirit.

1296. When one of us is

  1297. filled afresh by the

  1298. Spirit, they, through

  1299. the word, draw our

  1300. attention to Christ.

  1301. That's what happened

  1302. last week.

  1303. And it was sweet.

  1304. That's the first

  1305. effect.

  1306. The word of Christ

  1307. dwelling richly among

  1308. us.

  1309. Addressing one another

  1310. in Psalms, hymns, and

  1311. spiritual songs.

  1312. The second effect.

1313. When we're filled by the

  1314. Spirit, when the Spirit

  1315. of God makes His

  1316. presence known in a

  1317. powerfully way, we

  1318. will sing and make

  1319. melody in our hearts

1320. to the Lord, the Lord

  1321. being Jesus.

  1322. When we're filled by

  1323. the Spirit, we are

  1324. filled with the

  1325. fullness of God and

  1326. it will overflow into

  1327. a kind of singing.

  1328. Now, not everyone is

  1329. comfortable singing.

  1330. There can be reasons

  1331. for that.

1332. I used to not like to

  1333. sing because my voice

1334. is not the best voice.

  1335. my family will bear

  1336. testimony to that.

1337. But Psalm 101 is what

  1338. I bank on.

  1339. Make a joyful noise

  1340. to the Lord.

  1341. There are other reasons

  1342. why people don't

  1343. necessarily feel

  1344. comfortable singing.

  1345. They didn't grow up

  1346. singing.

  1347. It's a foreign thing to

  1348. them.

  1349. It's like an

  1350. underdeveloped muscle.

1351. But you know how you

  1352. strengthen a muscle?

  1353. You exercise it.

  1354. Brothers and sisters,

1355. maybe you who are a

  1356. little reluctant to

  1357. sing, God made you

  1358. to sing.

1359. He made you for it.

  1360. To sing His praises.

  1361. Lift up your voice.

1362. And so when we do sing,

  1363. there's some things

  1364. that happen.

  1365. When we sing filled

  1366. by the Spirit,

  1367. it's a singing marked

  1368. by clarity of

  1369. understanding.

  1370. We're fully aware of

  1371. what we're singing.

  1372. We are singing glorious

  1373. and real truths back

  1374. to our great God.

1375. And what also is true,

  1376. our singing is marked

  1377. by a fullness of

  1378. emotion.

  1379. not in emotionalism.

1380. We're not singing in order

  1381. to have an emotional

  1382. experience.

  1383. That's not the goal.

1384. The goal is to praise

1385. God for who He is.

1386. But it will be emotional.

  1387. It's okay to weep

  1388. while you sing.

  1389. Jesus is not embarrassed

  1390. by that.

1391. It's okay to raise your

  1392. voice while we're singing

  1393. and say praise God.

  1394. Thank you Jesus.

  1395. We should be affected

  1396. by the truths

  1397. we are singing.

  1398. And it's classic

  1399. example of the Spirit

  1400. making things real

  1401. for us.

  1402. We can't help

  1403. but sing.

  1404. it's a singing

  1405. marked by fullness

  1406. of engagement.

  1407. Not just our emotions

1408. but our bodies as well.

  1409. People lifting up

  1410. their hands.

  1411. Hey, if I'm willing

1412. to lift up my hands

  1413. for the Ohio State

  1414. Buckeyes,

  1415. you better believe

  1416. I will lift up

  1417. my hands

  1418. for our glorious

  1419. God.

  1420. Let me read you

  1421. Psalm 63.

  1422. Just a little piece.

  1423. People have been

  1424. lifting up their hands

  1425. to the Lord

  1426. for a long time.

  1427. David,

  1428. O God,

  1429. you are my God.

  1430. Earnestly I seek you.

1431. My soul thirsts for you.

1432. My flesh faints for you

1433. as in a dry and weary land

1434. where there is no water.

1435. So I have looked upon you

  1436. in the sanctuary

  1437. beholding your power

  1438. and glory

  1439. because your love

  1440. is better than life.

1441. My lips will praise you.

1442. So I will bless you

1443. as long as I live.

  1444. In your name

  1445. I will lift up

  1446. my hands.

  1447. When lips aren't enough

1448. we lift up our hands.

  1449. It's an overflow.

  1450. It's a fullness of joy.

  1451. Fullness of recognition

1452. of what God has done for us.

1453. And we give it back to Him.

  1454. When there's a fresh feeling

  1455. by the Spirit

  1456. it's not unusual

  1457. to have a correspondence

  1458. fullness of volume

  1459. as well.

1460. We're singing from our toes.

  1461. Because God is awesome.

1462. What joy there is in that.

  1463. When the Spirit

  1464. moves upon His people

  1465. God's people

  1466. sing from their hearts.

  1467. The third effect.

1468. When the Spirit fills us

1469. we're going to give thanks

  1470. to God.

  1471. When God fills us

  1472. freshly by His Spirit

  1473. there is a fullness.

  1474. We become aware

  1475. of God's manifold goodness

  1476. to us.

  1477. We give thanks

  1478. all the time

  1479. and for everything

  1480. because we realize

  1481. that all good things

  1482. come from our God.

  1483. Did you notice

  1484. in verse 19

1485. or is it verse 20?

  1486. 20.

  1487. Giving thanks always

  1488. and for everything

  1489. to God the Father

1490. in the name of the Lord

  1491. Jesus Christ.

  1492. Why is that there?

  1493. Here's what it means.

1494. We give thanks to God

1495. in the name of the Lord

  1496. Jesus Christ

  1497. because we realize

  1498. everything

  1499. God is using everything

  1500. everything for our good.

  1501. Everything.

  1502. All the time.

  1503. Working for our good.

1504. And when we realize that

  1505. and that's true

  1506. because we're in Christ

  1507. we give thanks

  1508. to God.

  1509. And if you're a Christian

  1510. you have always

  1511. got something

  1512. to be thankful for.

1513. Let me put it this way.

  1514. No matter what time

  1515. during the day

  1516. no matter what circumstances

  1517. you're facing

  1518. where would you be

  1519. right then and there

  1520. without Jesus?

  1521. Where would you be?

  1522. I'm regularly reminded

1523. of where I would be

  1524. and therefore

  1525. I regularly give thanks

  1526. for my wife

  1527. for my children

  1528. for this church

  1529. for my employment

  1530. for my health

  1531. for my friends

  1532. but most of all

  1533. what I give God

  1534. thanks for

  1535. is my salvation.

  1536. I was a wretch

  1537. and God made me

  1538. his treasure.

1539. Do I have an amen?

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Here's the point.

  1542. The Spirit of God

  1543. stirs gratitude

  1544. in the hearts

  1545. of God's people

  1546. and gratitude

  1547. is given voice.

  1548. It's called

  1549. thanksgiving.

  1550. Thanksgiving

  1551. is the outworking

  1552. of grateful hearts

  1553. and it's a mark

  1554. of the Spirit

  1555. at work

  1556. in our midst.

1557. Shows up in a variety

  1558. of ways.

1559. We sing with grateful hearts.

1560. We give thanks to God

  1561. together in prayer.

1562. We give thanks to God

  1563. in informal conversations.

  1564. When the Spirit

  1565. fills His people

  1566. we're filled

  1567. with gratitude

  1568. for the goodness

  1569. of God

1570. and so we give thanks

  1571. over and over

  1572. and over again.

  1573. The last effect.

  1574. Being filled

  1575. by the Spirit

  1576. leads to

  1577. submitting to one another

  1578. out of reverence

  1579. for Christ.

  1580. submitting to one another.

  1581. This word means

  1582. to voluntarily

  1583. set yourself

  1584. under others.

  1585. Did you note

  1586. the motive?

  1587. Out of reverence

  1588. for Christ.

  1589. I submit myself

  1590. to you

  1591. out of reverence

  1592. for Christ.

  1593. You submit yourself

  1594. to one another

  1595. out of reverence

  1596. for Christ.

  1597. At the heart

  1598. of this

  1599. is humility.

  1600. We consider

  1601. others

  1602. better

  1603. than ourselves.

  1604. Remember Paul

  1605. is addressing

  1606. a church here.

  1607. In the next passage

  1608. he's going to

  1609. actually work out

  1610. what submission

  1611. looks like

  1612. in marriage

  1613. and in parenting

  1614. and in the workplace.

  1615. But here he's talking

  1616. about in the church.

1617. We submit to one another

  1618. out of reverence

  1619. for Christ.

1620. Let me just give you

  1621. a picture of this.

  1622. If you want to

  1623. turn your Bibles

  1624. quickly to John 13

  1625. you'll remember this.

  1626. This is just before

  1627. Jesus

  1628. dies.

  1629. And during this supper

  1630. Jesus does

  1631. something that

  1632. his disciples

  1633. would never forget.

  1634. He took off

  1635. his outer robe

  1636. grab a towel

  1637. in a

  1638. wash basin

  1639. and he washed

  1640. his disciples'

  1641. feet.

  1642. Every one of them.

  1643. And then

1644. at the end of that

  1645. he says this.

  1646. This is 13-12.

  1647. Do you understand

  1648. what I have done

  1649. to you?

  1650. You call me

  1651. teacher and Lord

  1652. and you are right

  1653. for so I am.

  1654. If I then

  1655. your Lord and teacher

  1656. have washed your feet

  1657. you also ought to

  1658. wash one another's feet.

1659. For I have given you

  1660. an example that you

  1661. also should do

1662. just as I have done

  1663. to you.

  1664. Truly, truly

  1665. I say to you

  1666. a servant

  1667. is no greater

  1668. than his master

  1669. nor is a messenger

  1670. greater than the one

  1671. who sent him.

1672. If you know these things

  1673. blessed

  1674. are you

  1675. if you do them.

  1676. There is blessing

  1677. in submitting

  1678. to one another

  1679. out of reverence

  1680. for Christ.

  1681. It's the stuff

  1682. of unity.

  1683. unity.

  1684. It's the stuff

  1685. by which the Spirit

  1686. moves on a people

  1687. to preserve,

  1688. maintain the unity

  1689. of the Spirit

  1690. in the bond

  1691. of peace.

  1692. This is an outworking

  1693. of the Spirit's presence

  1694. in our life.

1695. Let me close by this.

  1696. we've looked at

  1697. the presence

  1698. of the paraclete

  1699. ongoing presence

  1700. of the Holy Spirit

  1701. in our lives.

  1702. He wants to do

  1703. something in us.

  1704. He wants us

  1705. to have an effect.

  1706. He wants to do

  1707. something in our church

  1708. to build us up.

  1709. What all these

  1710. four effects

  1711. have in common

  1712. is it builds

  1713. up the body.

  1714. It unites us.

  1715. It strengthens us.

  1716. It aims us

  1717. at Jesus.

  1718. So here's how

  1719. I'd like to close.

  1720. I had some

  1721. diagnostic questions

  1722. but we're going

  1723. to skip them.

  1724. And we're just

1725. going to go to this.

  1726. In Luke 11,

  1727. 13,

  1728. Jesus says this.

  1729. Ask your Father

  1730. for the Holy Spirit.

1731. If we who are evil

  1732. know how to give

  1733. good gifts,

  1734. how much more

  1735. will our Heavenly

  1736. Father give

  1737. the Holy Spirit

  1738. to those

  1739. who ask Him.

  1740. Would you join

  1741. with me

  1742. in asking our Father

  1743. to pour out

  1744. His Spirit

  1745. in greater and

  1746. greater measures

  1747. on our church

  1748. so that Christ

  1749. would be

  1750. exalted.

  1751. Let's turn

  1752. to that right now.

  1753. Let's pray.

  1754. прят

  1755. for the Holy Spirit

  1756. for the Holy Spirit

  1757. that Father
