  1. If you'd open up your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  2. Last week we started in a section in which Paul is addressing husbands and wives.

  3. Married couples in the room.

  4. Did you come this morning thinking that your marriage is beyond hope?

  5. Did you walk into this building this morning thinking that your marriage is missing something?

  6. Do you think that you're a failure as a wife?

  7. Husband, do you think you're a failure as a husband?

  8. Or maybe you just think your marriage is just fine.

  9. I mean, everybody's happy.

  10. No problems here.

  11. Well, last Sunday we looked at Paul's exhortations to wives to come under their husbands' care.

  12. But did you know in this passage, starting in verse 22 going through verse 33 of chapter 5,

  13. the Apostle Paul spends three times as much holy writ on husbands than on wives.

  14. He's got a lot to say to husbands.

  15. So let's look at it now.

  16. I'm going to start off in verse 22, bring us back up to speed with what he said to wives,

  17. and then we'll read through 33.

  18. So please read along with me in your Bibles.

  19. This is God's Word.

  20. Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord,

  21. for the husband is the head of the wife,

  22. even as Christ is the head of the church, his body,

  23. and himself its Savior.

  24. Now as the church submits to Christ,

  25. so also wives should submit in everything to their own husbands, their husbands.

  26. 25.

  27. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,

  28. that he might sanctify her,

  29. having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word,

  30. so that he may present the church to himself in splendor without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,

  31. that she might be holy and without blemish.

  32. 28.

  33. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.

  34. He who loves his wife loves himself,

  35. for no one ever hated his own flesh,

  36. but nourishes and cherishes it,

  37. just as Christ does the church.

  38. Because we are members of his body.

  39. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,

  40. and the two shall become one flesh.

  41. This mystery is profound.

  42. And I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

  43. 33.

  44. 33.

  45. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself,

  46. and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

  47. Husbands, this morning, I want you to feel what's going on here.

  48. It's not me exhorting you.

  49. It's not your wife exhorting you.

  50. It's God exhorting you through His Word.

  51. And here's what he's saying.

  52. Husband, love your wife like Christ loves His bride.

  53. Love your lady like Christ loves His lady.

  54. Now don't hear me wrong.

  55. I'm not saying be Christ to your wife.

  56. You can't.

  57. You can't.

  58. Because you're not.

  59. You're not Jesus.

  60. But what you can be,

  61. what you must be,

  62. is like Christ in the way you love this woman God has given to you.

  63. Husbands, you have a high calling in marriage

  64. to be like Christ in the way that you love her.

  65. You are to exercise this responsibility entrusted to you

  66. in love.

  67. So this morning, I want you to see five points.

  68. Five points.

  69. We're going to pull it from the text.

  70. The first point is going to be a little bit of a reminder.

  71. So let's go to that first point right now.

  72. So five points.

  73. Here's the first one.

  74. Five points.

  75. Remember,

  76. marriage is a dance.

  77. Last week, I wanted to help you see

  78. kind of the big sweep of our Bibles.

  79. Creation, fall, redemption.

  80. And in creation, in Genesis chapters 1 and 2,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  81. we read that God created Adam and Eve

  82. in His own likeness.

  83. And so Adam bore the likeness of God

  84. and so did Eve.

  85. They are of equal value in God's sight.

  86. Equal worth.

  87. But what we also saw

  88. is that God assigned them roles

  89. based on Adam's manness

  90. and based on Eve's woman-ness.

  91. And so equal value,

  92. but differing roles in this thing called marriage.

  93. This dance.

  94. So Adam was to lead his lady in this dance.

  95. But then there was the fall.

  96. And the dance was distorted.

  97. The roles in this thing called marriage

  98. were distorted.

  99. Husbands would either abdicate or be tyrannical.

  100. Wives would either be a floor mat or usurp.

  101. Sin made a mess of the roles.

  102. But it didn't stay there

  103. because with the coming of Jesus,

  104. Jesus came to redeem the roles in marriage.

  105. He came to make right what was made wrong.

  106. He came to bring order to that

  107. which was placed into disorder.

  108. And so what we read in Ephesians 5,

  109. 22-33,

  110. is God's plan of restoration

  111. of the roles in marriage.

  112. And what we see is that

  113. husbands are going to take their cues

  114. from Jesus, the head.

  115. We are the heads of our wives.

  116. And so we are to lead our ladies.

  117. And what you are going to see is

  118. we lead out of love.

  119. And what we read in 5-23

  120. are that wives,

  121. you are assigned a role.

  122. And your role is the church-like response

  123. to Christ.

  124. To come under the care of Christ.

  125. Come under the care of your husband.

  126. What we see Paul doing in Ephesians 5,

  127. 22-33,

  128. is making Christ the ultimate bridegroom

  129. and the church the ultimate bride.

  130. And they become our examples

  131. as Christian husbands and wives.

  132. They kind of determine our steps,

  133. if you will,

  134. in this thing called marriage.

  135. What you are going to see is that

  136. this Christ church basis

  137. runs throughout 22-33.

  138. Point two.

  139. And let's now get into the passage.

  140. Verse 25, we read this.

  141. Husbands, love your wives

  142. as Christ loved the church.

  143. Husbands, love your bride

  144. like Christ loves His bride.

  145. Now what does that look like?

  146. Well, it's a Christ-like love.

  147. There are two mistakes, guys,

  148. that we make in our husbanding.

  149. We can fall off the horse on either side.

  150. It's either abdicating

  151. and we tempt our wife in a certain way.

  152. Or we become tyrants

  153. and we tempt our wife in a certain way.

  154. Both are wrong.

  155. Do you know what they both have in common?

  156. It's about me.

  157. It's about my comfort.

  158. It's about what I want.

  159. But what we see going on in verse 25

  160. is what God is calling us to.

  161. He's calling us out of abdicating

  162. and He's calling us out of being a tyrant.

  163. He's calling us to be like Christ

  164. in the way that we love our wives.

  165. That word love is that classic word agape.

  166. And it's used six times in verses 25-33.

  167. There is an emphasis on love in this passage.

  168. Notice that the command in 25,

  169. the exhortation isn't husbands,

  170. head your wives.

  171. It's husbands, love your wives.

  172. Here's what that means.

  173. God has entrusted husbands

  174. with a responsibility

  175. for the welfare of their wives.

  176. And that responsibility

  177. is to be exercised in Christ-like love.

  178. And that agape love

  179. is not a selfish love.

  180. It's a love that is concerned

  181. about the greatest good of another.

  182. And so husbands,

  183. what we're being called to here

  184. is to lead in a certain way

  185. in which we have the greatest good

  186. of our wives in mind.

  187. That's the love we're being called to here.

  188. Can I just tell you something, brother?

  189. In order for you to love your wife

  190. like Christ,

  191. you must first know what it means

  192. to be loved by Christ.

  193. Do you know His great love for you, brother?

  194. Do you know He gave Himself up for you?

  195. He died for you.

  196. And now you're being called

  197. to love your wives

  198. in like fashion.

  199. So, what kind of love?

  200. It's a Christ-like love.

  201. And that kind of love,

  202. I've just been towing it,

  203. is a sacrificial love.

  204. He gave Himself.

  205. It's a voluntary love.

  206. In John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  207. Jesus is talking about Him

  208. as the good shepherd.

  209. And about eight times

  210. in that passage,

  211. He references Himself

  212. as laying down His life.

  213. In verse 18 in chapter 10,

  214. He says this,

  215. I lay down my life

  216. of my own accord.

  217. I do it voluntarily.

  218. Brother,

  219. you're being called

  220. to love your wife

  221. not as a strong-armed in,

  222. God is angry,

  223. but a calling to,

  224. a wooing,

  225. voluntarily loving your wife,

  226. laying down your life.

  227. Christ gave Himself

  228. for His bride.

  229. It's not only voluntary,

  230. it's sacrificial.

  231. He gave Himself.

  232. He's talking about His death.

  233. He's talking about the cross.

  234. He's talking about

  235. coming to an end to Himself

  236. for the good of someone else,

  237. His bride.

  238. It's voluntary,

  239. it's sacrificial,

  240. it's substitutionary.

  241. He gave Himself up for her.

  242. He took what

  243. was deserving,

  244. His bride deserved.

  245. You get it?

  246. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  247. who was a wonderful

  248. preacher and pastor

  249. of a bygone era,

  250. when he was preaching

  251. through this passage,

  252. he said something to the effect,

  253. what God gives us

  254. a pattern of,

  255. husbands,

  256. is none other than

  257. the atoning work

  258. of Jesus Christ

  259. in the way we love our wives.

  260. Husbands,

  261. you want a model

  262. for loving your wife?

  263. Think cross.

  264. Think atonement.

  265. Brothers,

  266. to love our brides

  267. like Christ loved His bride

  268. is to give ourselves

  269. for them.

  270. to give up our lives.

  271. But you know what?

  272. That giving up your life

  273. is not the goal.

  274. That's the means

  275. to another end.

  276. We give our lives

  277. for something glorious,

  278. for something splendid.

  279. And we see that played out

  280. in verses 26 and 27.

  281. There are three that's

  282. in 26 and 27.

  283. Let me just read them to you.

  284. Christ gave Himself up

  285. that He, Christ,

  286. might sanctify her.

  287. The church.

  288. That's in verse 26.

  289. And then verse 27,

  290. Christ gave Himself up

  291. that He might present

  292. the church to Himself

  293. in splendor.

  294. And then,

  295. also in verse 27,

  296. that she might be holy

  297. and without blemish.

  298. You know what

  299. all those that's

  300. have in common?

  301. They're all purpose clauses,

  302. which means this.

  303. Jesus gave Himself up

  304. for a goal.

  305. He gave Himself up

  306. for the splendor

  307. of His bride.

  308. For her holiness.

  309. holiness.

  310. He gave Himself up

  311. for the greatest good

  312. of the one He loved.

  313. Holiness.

  314. Let's go back to that

  315. first that.

  316. That He might sanctify her.

  317. When you hear the word

  318. sanctify,

  319. I know many of you

  320. in this room,

  321. when you hear that word

  322. sanctify,

  323. you think of

  324. sanctification,

  325. the process

  326. of being made

  327. more and more like Jesus.

  328. That work of God

  329. that He does

  330. in cooperation

  331. with a saint

  332. to become like Jesus.

  333. But,

  334. that's not how

  335. this word is being used

  336. here in this passage.

  337. This sanctify

  338. is actually

  339. a one-time

  340. definitive act

  341. in which

  342. God calls

  343. a sinner

  344. out of sin

  345. and consecrates

  346. that sinner

  347. to God

  348. in holiness.

  349. And so,

  350. instead of

  351. progressive sanctification,

  352. sanctification,

  353. you need to be thinking

  354. positional sanctification.

  355. This is true

  356. of you

  357. in Christ.

  358. You are

  359. a holy one.

  360. You are

  361. a saint.

  362. It happened

  363. the moment

  364. you believed.

  365. God set you apart

  366. for Himself.

  367. And we see

  368. how He did that.

  369. That He might

  370. sanctify her,

  371. having cleansed her

  372. by the washing

  373. of water

  374. with the word.

  375. Christ sanctified

  376. us

  377. by cleansing

  378. us.

  379. It's a

  380. moral,

  381. spiritual

  382. cleansing

  383. that's being

  384. spoken of here.

  385. Cleansing

  386. us from our

  387. sin.

  388. That's what

  389. He's getting

  390. at.

  391. And He did

  392. that by

  393. washing us

  394. with the water

  395. of the word.

  396. What is He

  397. talking about

  398. there?

  399. He's talking

  400. about the gospel.

  401. Jesus

  402. cleanses us

  403. from sin

  404. through the

  405. message of

  406. the cross

  407. of Christ.

  408. A sinner

  409. believes in

  410. what God

  411. and Christ

  412. has done

  413. for them.

  414. They hear

  415. the message,

  416. they believe

  417. it,

  418. and they

  419. are cleansed

  420. from their

  421. sin.

  422. Who will

  423. wash away

  424. my sin?

  425. Nothing but

  426. the blood

  427. of Jesus.

  428. So in

  429. love for us,

  430. Christ gave

  431. Himself up

  432. for us

  433. to sanctify

  434. us,

  435. and He did

  436. that by

  437. cleansing us

  438. with His

  439. atoning

  440. blood.

  441. Behind this

  442. is a really

  443. interesting

  444. practice.

  445. In the

  446. first century

  447. there's this

  448. thing called

  449. the bridal

  450. bath,

  451. in which

  452. a bride

  453. on her,

  454. or the

  455. day before

  456. her wedding

  457. day,

  458. would bathe

  459. herself to

  460. present her

  461. clean to

  462. her husband,

  463. her bride.

  464. Paul is

  465. pulling on

  466. that strength

  467. that He

  468. might

  469. sanctify

  470. her.

  471. Second

  472. that,

  473. that He

  474. might present

  475. the church

  476. to Himself

  477. in splendor.

  478. Now,

  479. I want you

  480. to see two

  481. things here.

  482. It's Christ

  483. presenting the

  484. church to

  485. Himself.

  486. And what that

  487. means is this.

  488. This is a

  489. work of

  490. Jesus.

  491. Christ

  492. doing a

  493. work from

  494. beginning to

  495. end in

  496. His

  497. bride.

  498. But the

  499. other thing I

  500. want to

  501. point out

  502. is this.

  503. When this

  504. presentation

  505. takes place.

  506. Whenever it

  507. takes place,

  508. Christ is

  509. going to

  510. present to

  511. Himself a

  512. church in

  513. splendor,

  514. without spot,

  515. without wrinkle,

  516. without any

  517. such thing.

  518. You know what

  519. He's talking

  520. about?

  521. He's talking

  522. about when

  523. He comes

  524. back.

  525. Jesus is

  526. going to

  527. present,

  528. to Himself

  529. a church

  530. perfected.

  531. And what

  532. that means

  533. is this.

  534. He's in

  535. it for the

  536. long haul.

  537. He's making

  538. us clean.

  539. And on the

  540. day He

  541. comes back,

  542. He's going

  543. to present

  544. us to

  545. Himself

  546. in

  547. perfected

  548. glory,

  549. in

  550. perfected

  551. splendor.

  552. Which brings

  553. us to the

  554. last of

  555. that.

  556. That she

  557. might be

  558. holy and

  559. without

  560. blemish.

  561. It's in

  562. contrast to

  563. the without

  564. spot,

  565. wrinkle,

  566. or any

  567. such thing.

  568. Those would

  569. be spot and

  570. wrinkles.

  571. They're

  572. imperfections.

  573. We try to

  574. cover those

  575. up.

  576. Christ died

  577. for His

  578. bride so

  579. that He

  580. could one

  581. day present

  582. her to

  583. Himself in

  584. moral

  585. perfection,

  586. in splendor.

  587. The goal

  588. of Christ's

  589. sacrificial

  590. death was

  591. the moral

  592. splendor of

  593. the church.

  594. That she

  595. would be

  596. holy and

  597. without

  598. blame.

  599. maybe you're

  600. thinking,

  601. man, I

  602. thought this

  603. was a

  604. passage about

  605. husbands.

  606. Husbands,

  607. love your

  608. wife like

  609. Christ loved

  610. the church.

  611. Give

  612. yourself up

  613. for the

  614. splendor of

  615. your wife.

  616. What kind

  617. of splendor?

  618. Paul spells

  619. it out in

  620. spiritual terms,

  621. holy and

  622. blameless.

  623. brothers,

  624. I know

  625. many of

  626. you are

  627. wonderful

  628. protectors of

  629. your families,

  630. of your

  631. wives.

  632. Keep on

  633. doing that.

  634. I know

  635. many of

  636. you are

  637. just

  638. outstanding

  639. providers for

  640. your wife.

  641. Keep on

  642. doing that.

  643. That's right

  644. on the money.

  645. But if we

  646. take our

  647. cues from

  648. Jesus in

  649. this passage,

  650. do you know

  651. what our

  652. greatest aim

  653. is in

  654. loving our

  655. wives?

  656. It's their

  657. holiness.

  658. This is a

  659. call to

  660. spiritual

  661. leadership,

  662. brothers.

  663. This is a

  664. call to

  665. lead our

  666. wives in

  667. such a

  668. way that

  669. we lay

  670. down our

  671. lives for

  672. their

  673. greatest

  674. good,

  675. to be

  676. like

  677. Jesus.

  678. So

  679. brothers,

  680. love your

  681. wives into

  682. holiness.

  683. Lay your

  684. lives down

  685. so that

  686. your wife

  687. can

  688. spiritually

  689. thrive in

  690. Christ.

  691. You're

  692. caring for

  693. her

  694. spiritual

  695. welfare

  696. above

  697. all else.

  698. But you

  699. can't give

  700. your wife

  701. something that

  702. you don't

  703. have.

  704. You can't

  705. lead your

  706. wife somewhere

  707. that you

  708. yourself are

  709. not going.

  710. So to

  711. spiritually lead

  712. your wife

  713. starts with

  714. your own

  715. personal

  716. holiness.

  717. That's where

  718. it starts.

  719. And your

  720. personal holiness

  721. starts and

  722. ends with

  723. Christ.

  724. brother, is

  725. Jesus your

  726. first love?

  727. Are you

  728. seeking to

  729. obey the

  730. greatest

  731. commandment

  732. to love

  733. the Lord

  734. your God

  735. with everything

  736. you got?

  737. The greatest

  738. thing that you

  739. can do,

  740. husband,

  741. the greatest

  742. thing that you

  743. can do for

  744. your wife

  745. is to love

  746. your God

  747. with everything

  748. you got.

  749. To love

  750. him without

  751. any reservations.

  752. all sails to

  753. the wind

  754. loving Jesus.

  755. Full throttle

  756. love for

  757. Jesus.

  758. That is the

  759. greatest thing

  760. that you can

  761. do for your

  762. wife.

  763. That's where

  764. spiritual

  765. leadership

  766. starts.

  767. In your

  768. private

  769. devotion to

  770. Christ.

  771. Now, if

  772. you're pursuing

  773. Jesus that

  774. way, do you

  775. know who's

  776. going to

  777. notice?

  778. Oh, your

  779. wife will

  780. notice that.

  781. She might

  782. not know what

  783. to do with

  784. you, actually.

  785. She may

  786. just want to

  787. come under

  788. your care

  789. and trust

  790. herself to

  791. you fully.

  792. Allow you

  793. to lead

  794. her into

  795. greater and

  796. greater holiness.

  797. It might be

  798. an adjustment,

  799. but it's a

  800. good adjustment.

  801. Now, you

  802. might be

  803. thinking this,

  804. but my wife

  805. is more

  806. spiritually

  807. mature than

  808. I am.

  809. My wife

  810. is a

  811. spiritual

  812. giant.

  813. I'm just

  814. showing up.

  815. Well, brothers,

  816. here's the

  817. good news.

  818. It's not

  819. about how

  820. mature you

  821. are.

  822. It's about

  823. how faithful

  824. you are,

  825. living out

  826. the role

  827. God has

  828. entrusted

  829. to you.

  830. You don't

  831. have to be a

  832. spiritual giant

  833. to lead

  834. your wife.

  835. Look who

  836. I am.

  837. Your wife's

  838. holiness is

  839. not dependent

  840. on you,

  841. brother.

  842. your wife's

  843. holiness is

  844. dependent on

  845. Jesus.

  846. So, because

  847. he's the

  848. vine, do

  849. you know

  850. what you

  851. do?

  852. Over and

  853. over and

  854. over again.

  855. You point

  856. your bride

  857. to her

  858. Savior over

  859. and over

  860. and over

  861. again.

  862. You love

  863. her to

  864. Jesus.

  865. You love

  866. her into

  867. holiness.

  868. There's

  869. only one

  870. Savior.

  871. And to

  872. love your

  873. wife like

  874. Christ is

  875. not to

  876. be Christ.

  877. It's to

  878. love her to

  879. Christ.

  880. Think of

  881. your wife's

  882. splendor as

  883. Christ-likeness.

  884. Holiness.

  885. And your

  886. job,

  887. brothers,

  888. is to

  889. love your

  890. wife so

  891. that she

  892. becomes more

  893. and more

  894. like Jesus.

  895. You're not

  896. seeking to

  897. transform your

  898. wife into

  899. your image,

  900. but you're

  901. seeking to

  902. love her

  903. into the

  904. image of

  905. Christ.

  906. Christ has

  907. delegated you

  908. the responsibility

  909. and you

  910. fulfill it

  911. for the

  912. glory of

  913. Christ as

  914. you depend

  915. on Christ.

  916. I'll tell

  917. you what,

  918. guys, I

  919. think you'll

  920. testify with

  921. this, that

  922. there's no

  923. greater joy

  924. for a

  925. Christian

  926. husband than

  927. to see his

  928. wife spiritually

  929. thriving,

  930. loving her

  931. Savior.

  932. so we

  933. exercise our

  934. responsibility,

  935. our headship

  936. in love

  937. for the

  938. welfare of

  939. our wives,

  940. and at the

  941. top of that

  942. list is her

  943. spiritual health.

  944. So here's

  945. what that

  946. means,

  947. guys.

  948. Our eyes

  949. need to be

  950. on Jesus.

  951. In order to

  952. lead your

  953. wife well,

  954. eyes on

  955. Jesus, hearts

  956. for him.

  957. Second, very

  958. practical

  959. recommendation to

  960. lead your

  961. wives.

  962. Pray for

  963. your wife.

  964. Make time,

  965. maybe it's on

  966. your commute,

  967. maybe it's got

  968. some down time

  969. every day,

  970. pray for your

  971. wife.

  972. It's

  973. Christ-like.

  974. Ben was

  975. talking about

  976. it earlier.

  977. Romans 8,

  978. Jesus

  979. intercedes

  980. for us.

  981. He's at the

  982. right hand

  983. of God.

  984. Hebrews

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  985. chapter 7,

  986. he is

  987. alive

  988. to intercede

  989. for us.

  990. Brothers,

  991. let's intercede

  992. for our

  993. wives.

  994. Maybe you're

  995. saying right

  996. now,

  997. well,

  998. I just

  999. wouldn't

  1000. know what

  1001. to pray.

  1002. Let me

  1003. give you

  1004. some

  1005. suggestions.

  1006. Start

  1007. praying that

  1008. your wife

  1009. would love

  1010. Jesus above

  1011. all else.

  1012. start

  1013. praying

  1014. Ephesians

  1015. 3,

  1016. 16-19

  1017. for your

  1018. wife.

  1019. I find

  1020. myself

  1021. praying

  1022. that

  1023. for my

  1024. wife

  1025. a lot.

  1026. That

  1027. God

  1028. by his

  1029. spirit

  1030. would

  1031. strengthen

  1032. my

  1033. wife's

  1034. inner

  1035. being,

  1036. that

  1037. she

  1038. would

  1039. know

  1040. God's

  1041. great

  1042. love

  1043. for her.

  1044. And be

  1045. strengthened

  1046. by that.

  1047. Pray

  1048. for wisdom

  1049. for your

  1050. wife,

  1051. whatever

  1052. she's

  1053. facing

  1054. that

  1055. day,

  1056. whether

  1057. in the

  1058. workplace

  1059. or

  1060. in the

  1061. home.

  1062. Pray

  1063. for your

  1064. wife

  1065. for

  1066. patience,

  1067. especially

  1068. if she's

  1069. raising

  1070. little

  1071. ones.

  1072. Pray

  1073. for

  1074. them.

  1075. Direct

  1076. them to

  1077. the Bible

  1078. over and

  1079. over again.

  1080. If

  1081. Jesus

  1082. bathed

  1083. his

  1084. bride

  1085. with

  1086. the

  1087. gospel,

  1088. let's

  1089. be

  1090. bathing

  1091. our

  1092. brides

  1093. with

  1094. the

  1095. gospel,

  1096. reminding

  1097. them

  1098. over and

  1099. over again

  1100. who they

  1101. are in

  1102. Christ.

  1103. This

  1104. is who

  1105. you are.

  1106. This

  1107. is who

  1108. you are.

  1109. You're

  1110. blood-bought.

  1111. You belong

  1112. to the

  1113. king.

  1114. That's

  1115. who you

  1116. are.

  1117. Not

  1118. what you

  1119. look like.

  1120. It's

  1121. who you

  1122. belong

  1123. to.

  1124. And

  1125. you

  1126. belong

  1127. to

  1128. first

  1129. and

  1130. foremost

  1131. Jesus.

  1132. Young

  1133. men.

  1134. Young

  1135. unmarried

  1136. men in

  1137. the room.

  1138. I was

  1139. helping

  1140. move

  1141. somebody

  1142. yesterday

  1143. and I

  1144. was

  1145. working

  1146. alongside

  1147. two

  1148. young

  1149. guys

  1150. and I

  1151. said,

  1152. I got

  1153. something

  1154. in your

  1155. sermon

  1156. for you

  1157. tomorrow.

  1158. Middle

  1159. school

  1160. guys,

  1161. high

  1162. school

  1163. guys,

  1164. college

  1165. guys,

  1166. unmarried

  1167. guys.

  1168. You

  1169. don't get

  1170. married

  1171. and flip

  1172. this switch

  1173. and all

  1174. of a

  1175. sudden

  1176. you're

  1177. loving

  1178. your

  1179. wife

  1180. like

  1181. Christ

  1182. loved

  1183. the

  1184. church.

  1185. You

  1186. start

  1187. training

  1188. yourself

  1189. now

  1190. for that.

  1191. You

  1192. start

  1193. loving

  1194. now

  1195. that way.

  1196. Loving

  1197. your

  1198. mothers

  1199. and loving

  1200. your

  1201. sisters,

  1202. looking

  1203. out for

  1204. their

  1205. welfare.

  1206. Get in

  1207. the practice

  1208. of dying

  1209. to yourself

  1210. for the

  1211. welfare

  1212. of the

  1213. women

  1214. God

  1215. God

  1216. has

  1217. placed

  1218. in

  1219. your

  1220. life.

  1221. You're

  1222. going to

  1223. build

  1224. some

  1225. momentum

  1226. into

  1227. marriage.

  1228. Sisters,

  1229. unmarried

  1230. sisters,

  1231. I'm

  1232. just going

  1233. to give

  1234. you some

  1235. humble

  1236. advice.

  1237. Here's

  1238. who to

  1239. be looking

  1240. for,

  1241. for a

  1242. husband.

  1243. Someone

  1244. who's going

  1245. to love

  1246. Jesus more

  1247. than you.

  1248. That's who

  1249. you're looking

  1250. for.

  1251. He's

  1252. loving

  1253. Jesus more

  1254. than you.

  1255. He will

  1256. love you

  1257. well.

  1258. Well,

  1259. we've

  1260. taken a lot

  1261. of time

  1262. on this

  1263. first one.

  1264. Let's

  1265. now move

  1266. to point

  1267. three.

  1268. Husbands,

  1269. love your

  1270. wife as

  1271. Christ loves

  1272. his body.

  1273. This is in

  1274. verses 28

  1275. through 30.

  1276. So,

  1277. Paul has

  1278. been spending

  1279. a lot of

  1280. time in

  1281. comparing a

  1282. husband's

  1283. love for

  1284. his wife

  1285. to Christ's

  1286. love for

  1287. his bride.

  1288. But in

  1289. verse 28,

  1290. he seems

  1291. to change

  1292. metaphors.

  1293. He moves

  1294. from bride

  1295. talk to

  1296. body

  1297. talk.

  1298. He says

  1299. in verse

  1300. 28,

  1301. in the

  1302. same way,

  1303. husbands

  1304. should love

  1305. their wives

  1306. as their

  1307. own bodies.

  1308. It's a

  1309. comparison.

  1310. What I

  1311. love about

  1312. the Apostle

  1313. Paul is

  1314. he's a

  1315. realist.

  1316. And so

  1317. what he's

  1318. doing here

  1319. is he's

  1320. appealing to

  1321. something every

  1322. husband can

  1323. relate to,

  1324. looking out

  1325. for his

  1326. own body.

  1327. Says it in

  1328. verse 29,

  1329. for no one

  1330. ever hated

  1331. his own

  1332. flesh,

  1333. but nourishes

  1334. it and

  1335. cherishes

  1336. it.

  1337. Okay,

  1338. just a

  1339. quick note.

  1340. In verse

  1341. 28,

  1342. he refers to

  1343. the husband's

  1344. body,

  1345. and then in

  1346. verse 29,

  1347. he refers to

  1348. the husband's

  1349. flesh.

  1350. He's using

  1351. them synonymously,

  1352. and there's a

  1353. reason for that.

  1354. It's going to

  1355. come out later.

  1356. So hold on

  1357. to that

  1358. thought.

  1359. But what

  1360. Paul is

  1361. saying here

  1362. is as you

  1363. take care of

  1364. your own

  1365. body,

  1366. husband,

  1367. as you

  1368. rest it,

  1369. exercise it,

  1370. protect it,

  1371. as you feed

  1372. it and

  1373. clean it,

  1374. did I

  1375. mention feed

  1376. it?

  1377. Take that

  1378. way of

  1379. thinking and

  1380. apply it to

  1381. how you love

  1382. your wife.

  1383. Just as you

  1384. take care of

  1385. yourself,

  1386. love yourself,

  1387. take care of

  1388. your wife,

  1389. love your

  1390. wife.

  1391. Behind it's

  1392. the golden

  1393. rule,

  1394. love your

  1395. neighbor as

  1396. yourself.

  1397. Brother,

  1398. your closest

  1399. neighbor is

  1400. your wife.

  1401. But you

  1402. know what,

  1403. there's

  1404. something about

  1405. this that

  1406. kind of falls

  1407. a little flat

  1408. because just

  1409. before he's

  1410. talking about

  1411. loving your

  1412. wife like

  1413. Christ loved

  1414. the church,

  1415. it's like

  1416. the selfless

  1417. kind of love

  1418. and now he

  1419. says love

  1420. your wife

  1421. like your

  1422. body,

  1423. it's like

  1424. Paul,

  1425. he kind

  1426. of like went

  1427. from selfless

  1428. to selfish.

  1429. What's going

  1430. on here?

  1431. There's more

  1432. going on here.

  1433. There are a

  1434. couple clues in

  1435. this text to

  1436. help us see

  1437. that.

  1438. The first

  1439. clue is in

  1440. the beginning

  1441. of verse 28,

  1442. that first

  1443. clause phrase

  1444. in the same

  1445. way.

  1446. In the same

  1447. way,

  1448. husbands,

  1449. husbands should

  1450. love their

  1451. wives as

  1452. their own

  1453. bodies.

  1454. That phrase

  1455. in the same

  1456. way at the

  1457. beginning of

  1458. verse 28 is

  1459. actually pointing

  1460. back.

  1461. Pointing back

  1462. to what,

  1463. you ask?

  1464. Well,

  1465. the way that

  1466. Christ loves

  1467. the church.

  1468. But you

  1469. said,

  1470. well,

  1471. in verses

  1472. 25 to

  1473. 27,

  1474. Christ loves

  1475. his church

  1476. like a

  1477. bride.

  1478. He's not

  1479. talking about

  1480. loving his

  1481. church like

  1482. a body.

  1483. What are

  1484. you talking

  1485. about?

  1486. Look at

  1487. verse 23.

  1488. For the

  1489. husband is

  1490. the head

  1491. of the

  1492. wife,

  1493. even as

  1494. Christ is

  1495. the head

  1496. of the

  1497. church,

  1498. his body.

  1499. And there

  1500. it is.

  1501. Husbands are

  1502. to love

  1503. their wives

  1504. as their

  1505. own bodies

  1506. as Christ

  1507. loves the

  1508. church which

  1509. is his

  1510. body.

  1511. That's what's

  1512. under this

  1513. passage.

  1514. Under verses

  1515. 28 and 29.

  1516. Even though

  1517. Paul has been

  1518. talking about

  1519. the church as

  1520. the bride of

  1521. Christ,

  1522. he now

  1523. introduces the

  1524. church as the

  1525. body of

  1526. Christ with

  1527. that phrase

  1528. in the same

  1529. way.

  1530. It's never

  1531. left his

  1532. thoughts.

  1533. So what we

  1534. see here is

  1535. Christ as a

  1536. model.

  1537. He's

  1538. appealing to

  1539. us husbands

  1540. to love our

  1541. brides as

  1542. Christ loved

  1543. his church.

  1544. In this

  1545. case, his

  1546. body.

  1547. In verse

  1548. 29, we

  1549. read this,

  1550. for no one

  1551. ever hated

  1552. his own

  1553. flesh, but

  1554. nourishes it

  1555. and cherishes

  1556. it.

  1557. Just as

  1558. Christ does

  1559. the church

  1560. because we

  1561. are members

  1562. of his

  1563. body.

  1564. Do you

  1565. see what

  1566. Paul is

  1567. doing right

  1568. there?

  1569. He is

  1570. exhorting

  1571. husbands to

  1572. love their

  1573. wives as

  1574. their own

  1575. bodies just

  1576. as Christ

  1577. loves his

  1578. body, the

  1579. church.

  1580. And so

  1581. when it

  1582. talks about

  1583. hey,

  1584. husbands,

  1585. nourish and

  1586. cherish your

  1587. wife like

  1588. you do your

  1589. own body,

  1590. just as

  1591. Christ did

  1592. the church.

  1593. What we

  1594. can say

  1595. there is

  1596. Christ

  1597. nourished and

  1598. cherishes

  1599. his body,

  1600. the church.

  1601. So

  1602. husbands,

  1603. nourish your

  1604. wives.

  1605. That word

  1606. nourish is

  1607. going to

  1608. show up

  1609. again just

  1610. around the

  1611. corner in

  1612. Ephesians 6.4.

  1613. It's the

  1614. only other

  1615. place it

  1616. shows up

  1617. in the

  1618. New Testament.

  1619. And in

  1620. that context,

  1621. Paul is

  1622. telling parents

  1623. to do

  1624. this, to

  1625. raise your

  1626. children in

  1627. the discipline,

  1628. nurture,

  1629. and

  1630. instruction of

  1631. the Lord.

  1632. And the

  1633. idea there

  1634. is that we

  1635. nurture our

  1636. children into

  1637. maturity.

  1638. We nurture

  1639. our children

  1640. into adulthood.

  1641. We bring

  1642. them up to

  1643. live out the

  1644. fullness of

  1645. who God has

  1646. made them to

  1647. be.

  1648. That's our

  1649. task as

  1650. parents.

  1651. But when we

  1652. look at it

  1653. here in

  1654. this verse,

  1655. we've got to

  1656. remember Paul's

  1657. not talking to

  1658. parents, he's

  1659. talking to

  1660. husbands.

  1661. And he's

  1662. using the

  1663. framework of

  1664. bodies.

  1665. So here's

  1666. what he's

  1667. getting at.

  1668. It would

  1669. appear that

  1670. Paul wants

  1671. a husband

  1672. to nurture

  1673. their wives

  1674. as they do

  1675. their own

  1676. bodies into

  1677. health.

  1678. Physical,

  1679. emotional,

  1680. spiritual health.

  1681. Think of how

  1682. Jesus nurtures

  1683. his own body.

  1684. The church.

  1685. He provides

  1686. for all of

  1687. our needs.

  1688. He has our

  1689. greatest good

  1690. at heart.

  1691. He wants

  1692. us to thrive

  1693. under his

  1694. headship.

  1695. vitality.

  1696. Think vitality.

  1697. Husbands, you're

  1698. being called

  1699. here to lovingly

  1700. exercise your

  1701. responsibility as

  1702. head so that

  1703. your wives

  1704. thrive.

  1705. We don't

  1706. exercise our

  1707. headship to

  1708. squelch our

  1709. wives.

  1710. That's not the

  1711. picture here.

  1712. We leverage our

  1713. responsibility as

  1714. husbands.

  1715. we love our

  1716. wives so that

  1717. they become

  1718. what God has

  1719. fully called

  1720. them to be.

  1721. We want

  1722. our wives

  1723. to thrive.

  1724. Sisters,

  1725. married sisters,

  1726. are you feeling

  1727. God's love for

  1728. you right now?

  1729. Do you get a

  1730. sense of what

  1731. God wants for

  1732. you in your

  1733. husband?

  1734. He is looking

  1735. out for you.

  1736. not looking to

  1737. put you under

  1738. someone's

  1739. thumb.

  1740. Not only are

  1741. husbands to

  1742. nourish their

  1743. wives, we are

  1744. to cherish our

  1745. wives.

  1746. In that original

  1747. sense of that

  1748. word, it

  1749. actually means

  1750. warmth, as

  1751. in tenderness.

  1752. This word also

  1753. shows up in one

  1754. other place in

  1755. the New Testament.

  1756. It's in 1

  1757. Thessalonians 2

  1758. 7.

  1759. And Paul starts

  1760. by saying this,

  1761. but we were

  1762. gentle among you

  1763. like a nursing

  1764. mother taking

  1765. care, cherishing

  1766. her own

  1767. children.

  1768. So when we

  1769. hear that word

  1770. cherish, brothers,

  1771. we think

  1772. tenderness.

  1773. We think

  1774. warmth.

  1775. We think

  1776. gentleness.

  1777. We exercise

  1778. our responsibility

  1779. gently,

  1780. tenderly,

  1781. just as

  1782. Christ tenderly

  1783. cares for his

  1784. body, the

  1785. church.

  1786. Christ nourishes

  1787. and cherishes

  1788. us because we

  1789. are so

  1790. intimately

  1791. connected to

  1792. him, he

  1793. thinks of us

  1794. as part of

  1795. him.

  1796. That's how

  1797. much he loves

  1798. us.

  1799. And so what

  1800. we're getting

  1801. told here,

  1802. brothers, is

  1803. this.

  1804. We are so

  1805. intimately

  1806. connected to

  1807. our wives,

  1808. we must think

  1809. of them as

  1810. part of us

  1811. just as the

  1812. church is

  1813. part of

  1814. Christ.

  1815. We are to

  1816. love our

  1817. wives as

  1818. Christ loves

  1819. his body.

  1820. Point four.

  1821. Husbands,

  1822. love your

  1823. wives just

  1824. as Christ

  1825. loves his

  1826. church and

  1827. is one with

  1828. his church.

  1829. In verse

  1830. 31, Paul

  1831. quotes

  1832. Genesis

  1833. 2.24.

  1834. 2.24

  1835. happens, this

  1836. is one of my

  1837. favorite passages

  1838. of scripture.

  1839. Remember

  1840. this?

  1841. Adam is

  1842. naming all of

  1843. the animals,

  1844. he bear,

  1845. she bear,

  1846. he giraffe,

  1847. she giraffe,

  1848. he gorilla,

  1849. she gorilla.

  1850. Remember

  1851. that?

  1852. And there's

  1853. no she

  1854. man.

  1855. he's like,

  1856. he man,

  1857. where's the

  1858. she man?

  1859. He gorilla,

  1860. she gorilla,

  1861. no she

  1862. woman,

  1863. she man,

  1864. there's none

  1865. of that.

  1866. Remember what

  1867. God does?

  1868. Falls asleep

  1869. and he pulls

  1870. out of Adam

  1871. one of his

  1872. ribs and he

  1873. forms Eve

  1874. out of his

  1875. ribs.

  1876. Do you

  1877. remember that?

  1878. And then do you

  1879. remember what

  1880. God does?

  1881. He presents

  1882. her to

  1883. Adam and

  1884. in my

  1885. little

  1886. imagination,

  1887. this is how

  1888. I think it

  1889. went.

  1890. You ready?

  1891. Adam wakes

  1892. up,

  1893. oh man,

  1894. and before

  1895. him is

  1896. something amazing.

  1897. I think he

  1898. would have said

  1899. the equivalent,

  1900. Hebrew equivalent

  1901. of whoa.

  1902. Whoa,

  1903. God you're

  1904. good.

  1905. Whoa,

  1906. whoa,

  1907. whoa,

  1908. whoa,

  1909. whoa.

  1910. And then he

  1911. says,

  1912. she came out

  1913. of man.

  1914. Whoa,

  1915. man,

  1916. whoa,

  1917. man.

  1918. You get

  1919. it?

  1920. It is

  1921. Adam naming

  1922. Eve in

  1923. utter joy.

  1924. He's no

  1925. longer alone.

  1926. He is a helper

  1927. fit for him.

  1928. And God

  1929. provided her.

  1930. for him.

  1931. And so

  1932. Genesis 2

  1933. 24

  1934. is the

  1935. summing up

  1936. of what

  1937. God did

  1938. in Genesis

  1939. 2.

  1940. It is the

  1941. biblical

  1942. foundation

  1943. for marriage.

  1944. It's shot

  1945. through your

  1946. Bibles.

  1947. It reads,

  1948. therefore a man

  1949. shall leave

  1950. his father

  1951. and mother

  1952. and hold

  1953. fast to

  1954. his wife

  1955. and the

  1956. two shall

  1957. become

  1958. one flesh.

  1959. Paul has

  1960. been talking

  1961. about Christ's

  1962. love for

  1963. his bride

  1964. and Christ's

  1965. love for

  1966. his body

  1967. as a

  1968. motivator

  1969. for husbands

  1970. to love

  1971. their wife

  1972. as their

  1973. bride,

  1974. as their

  1975. wife,

  1976. as their

  1977. body.

  1978. But by

  1979. quoting

  1980. Genesis 2

  1981. 24 here,

  1982. Paul is

  1983. bringing it

  1984. all together

  1985. in a

  1986. climax in

  1987. his way

  1988. of thinking.

  1989. He's bringing

  1990. together these

  1991. thoughts of

  1992. both bride

  1993. and body.

  1994. for this

  1995. reason a

  1996. man and

  1997. woman leave

  1998. their father

  1999. and mother

  2000. in order to

  2001. get married

  2002. and become

  2003. one flesh,

  2004. one body.

  2005. So remember

  2006. that 28 to

  2007. 29 switch

  2008. from body

  2009. to flesh?

  2010. This is where

  2011. Paul was

  2012. heading with

  2013. that.

  2014. Genesis 2

  2015. 24.

  2016. Brothers,

  2017. love your

  2018. wife.

  2019. You are

  2020. one with

  2021. your wife

  2022. just as

  2023. Christ is

  2024. united with

  2025. his bride,

  2026. the church.

  2027. There is

  2028. an awesome

  2029. surprise in

  2030. this passage.

  2031. Would you

  2032. look at

  2033. verse 32?

  2034. He just

  2035. started,

  2036. quoted

  2037. Genesis 2

  2038. 24 and

  2039. then he

  2040. says this,

  2041. this is a

  2042. mystery.

  2043. This mystery

  2044. is profound.

  2045. And you're

  2046. left kind of

  2047. saying like,

  2048. huh?

  2049. What?

  2050. What mystery?

  2051. What are you

  2052. talking about?

  2053. Huh?

  2054. What's so

  2055. mysterious about

  2056. Genesis 2

  2057. 24?

  2058. It's very

  2059. clear.

  2060. It's very

  2061. compelling.

  2062. A husband

  2063. and his

  2064. bride becoming

  2065. one in

  2066. body?

  2067. That's very

  2068. clear,

  2069. thank you.

  2070. What's so

  2071. mysterious about

  2072. that?

  2073. Well,

  2074. look at the

  2075. rest of

  2076. verse 32.

  2077. This mystery

  2078. is profound

  2079. and I am

  2080. saying that

  2081. it refers to

  2082. Christ and

  2083. the church.

  2084. What are you

  2085. talking about,

  2086. Paul?

  2087. When Paul

  2088. uses the word

  2089. mystery in

  2090. his letters,

  2091. it has to do

  2092. with making

  2093. known something

  2094. that's been

  2095. secret on a

  2096. large scale.

  2097. In Ephesians,

  2098. he's been

  2099. talking about

  2100. in terms of

  2101. Jews and

  2102. Gentiles,

  2103. that God

  2104. had kept

  2105. secret,

  2106. that his

  2107. plan for

  2108. all along

  2109. was to

  2110. create a

  2111. whole new

  2112. people group

  2113. out of

  2114. Jews and

  2115. Gentiles by

  2116. uniting them

  2117. in Christ.

  2118. It was a

  2119. mystery made

  2120. known in

  2121. Christ.

  2122. And in

  2123. Romans 11,

  2124. he talks about

  2125. another mystery,

  2126. the partial

  2127. hardening of

  2128. Israel until

  2129. the fullness

  2130. of Gentiles

  2131. come in.

  2132. The mystery

  2133. is a secret.

  2134. It has to

  2135. do with a

  2136. big sweep

  2137. of salvation

  2138. and God

  2139. bringing stuff

  2140. into clarity

  2141. in Christ.

  2142. And so the

  2143. mystery Paul is

  2144. talking about

  2145. here in

  2146. Ephesians 5.32,

  2147. it's the

  2148. making known

  2149. of another

  2150. kind of a

  2151. secret.

  2152. I've told you,

  2153. Genesis 2.24

  2154. is the

  2155. foundation for

  2156. marriage,

  2157. a lifelong

  2158. exclusive

  2159. covenant

  2160. between one

  2161. man and

  2162. one woman.

  2163. And what

  2164. God does

  2165. throughout the

  2166. Old Testament

  2167. is he takes

  2168. Genesis 2.24

  2169. and uses it

  2170. to describe

  2171. his relationship

  2172. with his

  2173. people.

  2174. He describes

  2175. himself as a

  2176. husband and his

  2177. people as his

  2178. bride all

  2179. throughout the

  2180. Old Testament.

  2181. He's exclusively

  2182. devoted to

  2183. his wife,

  2184. Israel,

  2185. and his wife,

  2186. Israel,

  2187. is to be

  2188. exclusively devoted

  2189. to him.

  2190. We see it in

  2191. passages like

  2192. Jeremiah 2.1 and

  2193. 2.

  2194. Jeremiah 31.31 and

  2195. 32.

  2196. Isaiah 54.

  2197. Hosea 1-3.

  2198. It's a tragic

  2199. example.

  2200. Israel is a

  2201. whore,

  2202. unfaithful to

  2203. her husband.

  2204. It is a hard

  2205. thing to read.

  2206. If you haven't

  2207. read Ezekiel 16,

  2208. oh, you've got to

  2209. read Ezekiel 16.

  2210. It is a beautiful

  2211. picture of God's

  2212. redemptive love

  2213. for Israel whom

  2214. he makes a

  2215. bride.

  2216. His bride.

  2217. All throughout

  2218. the Old Testament,

  2219. God refers to

  2220. his covenant

  2221. people as his

  2222. bride.

  2223. Which brings us

  2224. back to the

  2225. mystery of

  2226. Ephesians 5.32.

  2227. Here's the

  2228. mystery.

  2229. Made known.

  2230. Christ claims

  2231. to be the

  2232. bridegroom.

  2233. He says,

  2234. I'm him.

  2235. New covenant

  2236. in my blood.

  2237. I am the

  2238. bridegroom now.

  2239. That's the

  2240. mystery.

  2241. The church is

  2242. his new covenant

  2243. bride.

  2244. Jesus is saying

  2245. it's about me.

  2246. The union

  2247. between Christ

  2248. and his body,

  2249. the church,

  2250. is a mystery

  2251. made known.

  2252. Jesus is

  2253. claiming to

  2254. be the

  2255. fulfillment of

  2256. this picture in

  2257. the Old Testament.

  2258. So here's what

  2259. Paul is saying

  2260. about Genesis

  2261. 2.24.

  2262. Genesis 2.24

  2263. has always been

  2264. pointing to

  2265. Jesus in the

  2266. church.

  2267. It always

  2268. has been.

  2269. It was always

  2270. aimed at

  2271. Jesus in the

  2272. church.

  2273. It was going

  2274. to be fulfilled

  2275. in him.

  2276. God knew it

  2277. when it was

  2278. penned.

  2279. That's why

  2280. Paul says,

  2281. and I am

  2282. saying,

  2283. he's putting

  2284. his apostolic

  2285. stamp on this.

  2286. when we

  2287. realize that

  2288. Genesis 2.24

  2289. has always

  2290. been pointing

  2291. to Christ,

  2292. we realize a

  2293. couple things.

  2294. First,

  2295. Christ,

  2296. the second

  2297. Adam,

  2298. is reversing

  2299. the failure

  2300. and fallout

  2301. of the first

  2302. Adam's marriage.

  2303. Second,

  2304. when you think

  2305. of Genesis 2.24,

  2306. you need to be

  2307. thinking Christ

  2308. in the church.

  2309. It's pointing

  2310. to him.

  2311. It's a big

  2312. picture,

  2313. isn't it?

  2314. third,

  2315. our marriages

  2316. are living

  2317. examples

  2318. of Christ's

  2319. redemptive

  2320. love for

  2321. his bride.

  2322. Do you know

  2323. about the

  2324. passion play

  2325. that takes

  2326. place in

  2327. Zion?

  2328. It's a huge

  2329. scale event.

  2330. And what the

  2331. passion play

  2332. is,

  2333. is a live

  2334. living out

  2335. of Christ's

  2336. redemptive

  2337. work.

  2338. Brothers and

  2339. sisters,

  2340. your marriages

  2341. are live

  2342. passion plays

  2343. of Christ

  2344. loving

  2345. his bride.

  2346. The key

  2347. to Christian

  2348. marriage

  2349. is Christ.

  2350. Oh,

  2351. I've gone

  2352. long.

  2353. Sorry.

  2354. Husbands,

  2355. let me just

  2356. boil down to

  2357. this.

  2358. Brothers,

  2359. the greatest

  2360. thing that you

  2361. can do for

  2362. your wife

  2363. is love

  2364. Jesus.

  2365. Wives,

  2366. the greatest

  2367. thing that you

  2368. can do for

  2369. your husband

  2370. is love

  2371. Jesus.

  2372. And so when

  2373. you have a

  2374. husband and

  2375. a wife both

  2376. loving Jesus

  2377. with all their

  2378. hearts,

  2379. you know what's

  2380. going to happen?

  2381. You're going to

  2382. have a marriage

  2383. that thrives.

  2384. And you're

  2385. going to have a

  2386. marriage that

  2387. speaks a word

  2388. about Christ

  2389. and his

  2390. church.

  2391. Amen.

  2392. Amen.

  2393. Amen.

  2394. Amen.

  2395. Amen.

  2396. Amen.

  2397. Amen.

  2398. Amen.

  2399. Amen.

  2400. Amen.

  2401. Amen.

  2402. Amen.

  2403. Amen.

  2404. Amen.

  2405. Amen.
