  1. He is risen.

  2. Really?

  3. Really.

  4. I don't know about you,

  5. but the people who have died that I know

  6. have not come back from the dead.

  7. People don't normally come back from the dead.

  8. And that's the claim of your Bible.

  9. That Jesus came back from the dead.

  10. This morning, here's the case I'm going to make.

  11. Either the resurrection of Jesus Christ happened

  12. or it didn't.

  13. The resurrection of Jesus Christ

  14. is either the biggest con job

  15. the world has ever known,

  16. or the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  17. is the greatest news the world could ever know.

  18. He was either raised from the dead or He wasn't.

  19. And this morning, I want to help you see

  20. from the Bible, from the New Testament,

  21. from Luke, who was a doctor,

  22. Dr. Luke's account

  23. of the resurrection of Jesus.

  24. We're going to look at 12 verses

  25. out of Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  26. It's the last chapter in the Gospel of Luke.

  27. You've got Bibles in your pews.

  28. And if you want to just start opening up your Bibles,

  29. it goes Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

  30. So what we're going to do this morning is this.

  31. I want to help you see

  32. what the New Testament actually says

  33. about the resurrection of Jesus.

  34. And then, I want to help you ask a question.

  35. A question everyone must ask.

  36. And then, I want to help you realize

  37. what's riding on this stuff.

  38. what's riding on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  39. And then, we'll bring it home.

  40. I'll ask the question, how do you respond?

  41. So let's look at this biblical account,

  42. the Gospel of Luke.

  43. Here's how to think about your Gospels

  44. in the New Testament.

  45. Think of them as eyewitnesses' accounts

  46. of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  47. Take them at their word.

  48. That's what they're claiming to be.

  49. We have eyewitnesses writing the New Testament

  50. saying this is what we saw.

  51. This is what we experienced.

  52. And so we're going to look at Luke 24, 1-12.

  53. This is what Ben read just moments ago.

  54. So if you're there,

  55. let me draw your attention to some things.

  56. In verses 1-3, we read about these ladies,

  57. these women,

  58. who early on that first Sunday

  59. went to the tomb

  60. and they brought spices with them.

  61. And they were surprised.

  62. Now there's a couple things I need to clarify real quick.

  63. Notice that it's on Sunday,

  64. not Saturday.

  65. And so the reason for that is this.

  66. On Friday, Jesus was crucified.

  67. And on sundown, on Friday,

  68. the Sabbath began.

  69. And so they were preparing the body of Jesus for burial.

  70. And so when sundown hit,

  71. they could work no longer.

  72. And so they had to wait out the Sabbath day,

  73. which was Saturday.

  74. And so first thing on Sunday,

  75. they made their way back to the tomb

  76. to finish preparing the body.

  77. So that's what's going on here.

  78. But there's something else

  79. I want to draw your attention to.

  80. They're not bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,

  81. Peter Cottondale,

  82. hopping down the bunny trail.

  83. They're not that.

  84. They're sad.

  85. Do you know why?

  86. Because Jesus had been killed.

  87. Their Savior, or so they thought,

  88. their teacher, was dead.

  89. They saw where His body was laid.

  90. You can look back at Luke 23, verse 55.

    Luke 23:55

  91. They saw where the body of Jesus was laid.

  92. And then they went home.

  93. Which helps us understand,

  94. they didn't get the wrong tomb

  95. when they went back Sunday morning.

  96. They knew where the tomb was.

  97. But they were going there

  98. to do something gruesome.

  99. They were going there

  100. to prepare Jesus' body.

  101. How far along they got on that Friday

  102. in preparing His body from burial,

  103. we don't know.

  104. But what we do know,

  105. He was beat up.

  106. His body would have had holes,

  107. wrists, and in His feet,

  108. and in His side.

  109. He would have puncture wounds

  110. all around His skull.

  111. I don't know if His hair

  112. kind of had that coagulated,

  113. crusty blood in it still.

  114. That's what they're going to.

  115. His back would have been

  116. a bloody mess.

  117. The cat of nine tails,

  118. which He was whipped with,

  119. was a Roman device

  120. that had stone,

  121. pieces of metal,

  122. in the nine lashes of the whip.

  123. And it was designed

  124. to tear a back open.

  125. It would have been ugly.

  126. What they were going to do

  127. was gruesome.

  128. They were sad.

  129. And so early that Sunday morning,

  130. they're making their way

  131. to the tomb

  132. to finish preparing His body.

  133. And the stones rolled away.

  134. It was like one to two tons.

  135. Not light.

  136. And so they're already like,

  137. what is going on here?

  138. And they walk in,

  139. and what they find

  140. is an empty tomb.

  141. That's the claim.

  142. That's the fact

  143. non-Christians and Christians

  144. need to deal with.

  145. It's an empty tomb.

  146. There's no body of Jesus.

  147. So whether you're a Christian

  148. or a non-Christian,

  149. we're looking at the same fact.

  150. No body.

  151. The difference is

  152. how you explain that.

  153. How do you make sense

  154. of the empty tomb?

  155. And so what we see

  156. in Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24:4

  157. verses 4 and forward,

  158. is the explanation

  159. of the empty tomb.

  160. In verses 4 through 8,

  161. we see in this account

  162. a movement.

  163. In verse 4,

  164. these ladies are really

  165. not only sad,

  166. but now they're perplexed.

  167. They're confused.

  168. In addition to their sadness,

  169. where is the body

  170. of our Lord Jesus?

  171. Where is it?

  172. And then if you look

  173. in verse 5,

  174. they were frightened

  175. and they bowed their faces

  176. to the ground.

  177. Why?

  178. Because there are two men

  179. there now.

  180. In dazzling appearance.

  181. They were angels.

  182. Announcing something.

  183. That might remind you

  184. of Luke 2

  185. in Bethlehem.

  186. The angels announcing

  187. the birth of the Christ.

  188. These angels were announcing

  189. the resurrection

  190. of the Christ.

  191. You see,

  192. all heaven

  193. had been waiting

  194. for this moment.

  195. All heaven

  196. had been seeing

  197. the outworking

  198. of these things.

  199. There's been

  200. eager excitement.

  201. God sent

  202. these angels

  203. down

  204. to tell

  205. these ladies

  206. that in fact,

  207. Jesus has been

  208. raised from the dead.

  209. That's what they're

  210. declaring.

  211. They're like,

  212. duh!

  213. You're not going to find

  214. the living among the dead!

  215. He's not here.

  216. He is risen.

  217. And then if you look

  218. at verse 6,

  219. He's not here

  220. but He's risen.

  221. Remember how He told you

  222. while He was still

  223. in Galilee,

  224. verse 7,

  225. that the Son of Man

  226. must be delivered

  227. into the hands

  228. of sinful men

  229. and be crucified

  230. and on the third day

  231. rise.

  232. Do you see

  233. what the angels

  234. are doing?

  235. They're quoting Jesus.

  236. Do you know why

  237. they're quoting Jesus?

  238. Because Jesus'

  239. word is authoritative.

  240. Jesus predicted

  241. His own death

  242. and His resurrection

  243. in Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  244. And here it is.

  245. Being fulfilled.

  246. And so with these angels

  247. declaring this,

  248. it adds weight

  249. to the words

  250. of what Jesus

  251. has said.

  252. And then these disciples,

  253. these ladies,

  254. lights go on.

  255. They remembered

  256. verse 8.

  257. They remembered

  258. His words.

  259. They remembered

  260. what He would say.

  261. By the way,

  262. that whole episode

  263. right there

  264. in Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  265. you might remember this.

  266. This is the whole episode

  267. where Jesus asks

  268. His disciples,

  269. hey, who do people

  270. say that I am?

  271. Some say John the Baptist

  272. come back from the dead.

  273. Others say Elijah,

  274. one of the prophets,

  275. and then Peter.

  276. Do you remember

  277. what Peter said?

  278. You are the Christ.

  279. The Messiah.

  280. The long-anticipated

  281. King of God.

  282. And what Jesus does

  283. with that,

  284. it's very important

  285. to know.

  286. That confession,

  287. Jesus then says,

  288. and then the Son of Man,

  289. a title for the Messiah,

  290. will be handed over

  291. to sinful men,

  292. killed,

  293. crucified,

  294. and on the third day,

  295. rise again.

  296. What these angels

  297. are saying,

  298. it's bringing clarity

  299. to who Jesus is.

  300. A risen Messiah.

  301. So these ladies,

  302. now remembering,

  303. make a beeline

  304. to the other disciples.

  305. And Luke is very purposeful

  306. in verse 10

  307. in pointing out

  308. these were all women

  309. who first saw

  310. the empty tomb.

  311. If you were

  312. in the first century,

  313. basing a case

  314. on the witness

  315. of women

  316. was something

  317. that you wouldn't do.

  318. At that time,

  319. women's testimony

  320. was seen

  321. as lesser

  322. than men's.

  323. And so it wouldn't

  324. have carried

  325. the same weight.

  326. But what Luke

  327. is doing here

  328. is saying,

  329. this is how it happened.

  330. It's almost

  331. counterintuitive.

  332. And what it ends

  333. up doing is

  334. authenticates

  335. the genuine

  336. outworking

  337. of what happened.

  338. These women

  339. were the first

  340. to see the empty tomb.

  341. And then we see

  342. them showing up,

  343. talking to the disciples,

  344. and the disciples,

  345. they're like,

  346. whatever.

  347. Sure,

  348. yes,

  349. I know you're upset.

  350. Sure.

  351. They thought it was

  352. a quote-unquote

  353. idle tale.

  354. And they disbelieved.

  355. It's a very strong word.

  356. They did not believe

  357. what they were saying.

  358. Jesus' disciples

  359. met the resurrection news

  360. with skepticism.

  361. Doesn't say much

  362. of the disciples,

  363. does it?

  364. upon hearing

  365. of the resurrection

  366. of Jesus,

  367. it's something

  368. we don't hear

  369. of that often.

  370. A dead man

  371. raised from the dead?

  372. Alive?

  373. One of the other

  374. disciples who was there

  375. was Peter.

  376. And in verse 12,

  377. we see what happens.

  378. when he hears,

  379. he jumps up

  380. and runs.

  381. Runs to the

  382. empty tomb.

  383. The question is,

  384. why?

  385. Why would Peter

  386. respond this way?

  387. And the rest of the

  388. disciples respond

  389. with idle tale,

  390. whatever,

  391. disbelief.

  392. What's the difference?

  393. let me make a suggestion.

  394. In Luke 22,

  395. Jesus is

  396. arrested.

  397. And before

  398. he's arrested

  399. at the Last Supper,

  400. Jesus says,

  401. one of you is going

  402. to betray me.

  403. And Peter says,

  404. not me,

  405. I'm going to the

  406. death, baby!

  407. Peter was a hothead,

  408. very passionate.

  409. I'm bringing it

  410. down with you,

  411. Jesus!

  412. And what Jesus

  413. told him was this,

  414. you're going to

  415. deny me three times

  416. before the rooster

  417. crows.

  418. And it happened.

  419. Peter denied

  420. Jesus three times,

  421. there was a rooster

  422. that crowed,

  423. and then Peter

  424. wept bitterly.

  425. It happened just

  426. a couple days

  427. before this.

  428. Which means,

  429. Peter has in mind,

  430. Jesus' words

  431. come true.

  432. And so when he

  433. hears these ladies

  434. saying they met

  435. an angel,

  436. and the angel

  437. said,

  438. Jesus is the one,

  439. remember what he

  440. said?

  441. He was going to

  442. be handed over

  443. to sinful men,

  444. crucified and

  445. rise again.

  446. Peter's like,

  447. yes!

  448. And he jumps,

  449. and he's running

  450. to the tomb.

  451. We don't know

  452. how long he's

  453. running for.

  454. We don't know

  455. what his heart rate

  456. was.

  457. We don't know

  458. any of that

  459. kind of detail.

  460. But I am guessing

  461. that as he's running,

  462. it's okay,

  463. okay.

  464. All right.

  465. I can't.

  466. This is amazing.

  467. Okay.

  468. Wait, wait.

  469. I said he was

  470. the Christ,

  471. and then he said

  472. he was going to

  473. rise from the dead.

  474. Yes.

  475. And then there was

  476. Jairus' daughter

  477. raised from the dead.

  478. Yes.

  479. And then there was

  480. that widow's son

  481. in the town of Nain.

  482. He raised him

  483. from the dead.

  484. And then

  485. there was Lazarus

  486. raised from the dead.

  487. And Jesus said

  488. at that point,

  489. I'm the resurrection

  490. and the life.

  491. If any of you die,

  492. if you believe in me,

  493. yet you will live.

  494. I can't wait.

  495. I can't wait.

  496. I can't wait.

  497. He gets to the tomb.

  498. Bows down.

  499. Looks in.

  500. And he sees

  501. the linens

  502. quote unquote

  503. by themselves.

  504. Do you know

  505. what that means?

  506. There was no body.

  507. No body.

  508. No body of Jesus.

  509. And then it records

  510. Peter leaving

  511. and wondering

  512. or marveling.

  513. He knew what was up.

  514. Soon thereafter,

  515. he would have

  516. a personal encounter

  517. with the risen Christ himself.

  518. The biblical account

  519. claims

  520. that Jesus

  521. raised from the dead.

  522. Supernaturally

  523. raised

  524. from the dead

  525. bodily.

  526. That's the claim

  527. Luke is making

  528. right here.

  529. The point is

  530. Jesus is alive.

  531. Jesus' corpse

  532. was carried

  533. into that tomb

  534. and three days

  535. later,

  536. he walked

  537. out

  538. on his own

  539. power.

  540. That's the claim.

  541. That's the biblical account.

  542. The New Testament

  543. claims that

  544. Jesus not only died,

  545. but he was raised

  546. bodily

  547. from the grave.

  548. Supernaturally.

  549. Now here's the question

  550. everybody must answer.

  551. How do you

  552. explain the

  553. empty tomb?

  554. How do you

  555. make sense of it?

  556. There have been

  557. several attempts

  558. to make sense

  559. of the empty tomb.

  560. One is called

  561. the stolen body theory.

  562. It goes something

  563. like this.

  564. There's two versions.

  565. The enemies of Jesus

  566. stole his body.

  567. The enemies

  568. of Jesus

  569. stole his body.

  570. wanted to prevent

  571. something from happening.

  572. But here's the deal.

  573. If the enemies of Jesus

  574. stole the body of Jesus

  575. and then there's this rumor

  576. that starts going around

  577. that Jesus' body

  578. he had raised

  579. from the dead.

  580. If you were an enemy

  581. of Jesus,

  582. what would you do?

  583. I'd pull a Jerry Maguire.

  584. You know,

  585. show me the money.

  586. show me the body.

  587. That's what I would do.

  588. I'd just wheel out

  589. the body of Jesus

  590. right in the middle

  591. of Jerusalem

  592. and say,

  593. here it is.

  594. Squash that rumor.

  595. The other version

  596. of the stolen

  597. savior theory

  598. is Jesus'

  599. disciples stole it.

  600. Not only would that

  601. first be like

  602. doing what Jesus

  603. told you not to do,

  604. but did you know

  605. that ten of the eleven

  606. disciples died

  607. martyrs' deaths

  608. proclaiming that

  609. not only Jesus died

  610. but he was raised

  611. from the dead bodily?

  612. Let me ask you this way.

  613. Would you die

  614. for a known lie?

  615. Would you give yourself

  616. up for something

  617. you knew that wasn't true?

  618. The best explanation

  619. of the empty tomb

  620. is that God

  621. supernaturally raised

  622. Jesus from the dead

  623. because he's the Messiah.

  624. Here's another

  625. explanation

  626. for the empty tomb.

  627. It's the swooned

  628. savior theory.

  629. Now I'm guessing

  630. that when you hear

  631. the word swoon

  632. you think of teenage girls

  633. swooning at one direction,

  634. something like that.

  635. It gets at fainting,

  636. becoming unconscious.

  637. And so the difference here

  638. is the difference

  639. between being resuscitated

  640. and being resurrected.

  641. and so the theory goes

  642. that Jesus didn't really

  643. die on the cross

  644. and that when he was

  645. brought back into,

  646. put in the tomb,

  647. he recovered.

  648. You know how brutalized

  649. he was?

  650. He couldn't even carry

  651. his cross.

  652. He was so beat up.

  653. He lost so much blood.

  654. He was pierced.

  655. He probably went into shock.

  656. Do you know

  657. that crucifixion

  658. was one of the most

  659. horrific ways to die?

  660. You eventually died

  661. of asphyxiation.

  662. You couldn't breathe.

  663. It was a whole body

  664. kind of death.

  665. The word,

  666. our word excruciate

  667. for pain

  668. means literally

  669. out of the cross.

  670. that's the kind of pain

  671. we're talking about.

  672. People didn't recover

  673. from crucifixions.

  674. Not to mention

  675. the Roman soldiers

  676. who were there

  677. assigned to make sure

  678. that he was dead.

  679. They knew what

  680. they were doing.

  681. They knew a dead body

  682. when they saw it.

  683. And so when Jesus

  684. was put in the tomb,

  685. he was dead.

  686. Let's just pretend

  687. he wasn't dead.

  688. That he kind of recovered.

  689. He would still have to move

  690. a one or ten,

  691. one or two ton

  692. pound stone

  693. out of the way.

  694. And then he would have

  695. to clear a guard

  696. stationed in front of him.

  697. Now a better explanation

  698. is that God

  699. supernaturally raised him

  700. from the dead.

  701. And then there's

  702. the sentimentalized Savior.

  703. It goes something like this.

  704. The disciples

  705. were so grieved.

  706. They were so sad

  707. that their Savior died

  708. that as soon as they heard

  709. any kind of rumor

  710. that Jesus was alive,

  711. they grabbed onto it.

  712. And they believed it

  713. and wanted to believe it

  714. so much they said

  715. it was true.

  716. That's how it goes.

  717. It's kind of like

  718. a mass psychosis

  719. of the early disciples

  720. of Jesus.

  721. They wanted to believe

  722. it so much

  723. that they actually

  724. kind of felt

  725. Jesus' presence.

  726. that they felt him

  727. speaking to him

  728. after he died.

  729. But that's not

  730. what the New Testament

  731. claims.

  732. The New Testament

  733. claims that

  734. there were

  735. over 500

  736. eyewitnesses

  737. to Jesus

  738. after he was raised

  739. from the dead.

  740. Even in Luke 24,

  741. what you'll read is

  742. eyewitness account

  743. after eyewitness.

  744. Even Jesus,

  745. after he was raised

  746. from the dead,

  747. walks into

  748. the upper room

  749. that was locked

  750. and he says,

  751. hey, it's me, Jesus.

  752. And hey, look it,

  753. you can touch my hands.

  754. I'm kind of hungry.

  755. Can you give me some fish?

  756. Munch, munch, munch.

  757. It's me, bodily raised

  758. from the dead.

  759. The New Testament

  760. doesn't give any space

  761. for this psychosis.

  762. The best explanation

  763. for the question,

  764. the best answer,

  765. how do you explain

  766. the empty tomb?

  767. Is that God

  768. supernaturally raised

  769. Jesus from the dead?

  770. That it actually happened?

  771. Here's the crazy claim.

  772. It's just not

  773. a religious claim.

  774. It's a claim

  775. to history.

  776. That it actually

  777. happened.

  778. That Jesus

  779. was really

  780. dead.

  781. Dead.

  782. And then was raised

  783. from the dead

  784. three days later.

  785. that's the eyewitness

  786. testimony

  787. of his disciples.

  788. Did you know

  789. that his disciples,

  790. their lives

  791. were dramatically changed?

  792. Do you remember

  793. what happened

  794. in the garden

  795. when Jesus was arrested?

  796. His disciples

  797. bolted

  798. like,

  799. out of here!

  800. See ya!

  801. After his resurrection,

  802. Jesus appears

  803. to his disciples

  804. and something

  805. changes

  806. in his disciples.

  807. They go from

  808. being cowards

  809. to being courageous.

  810. They go from being,

  811. I don't want to be

  812. identified with this guy.

  813. I'm going to die

  814. for this guy.

  815. The best explanation

  816. for the empty tomb

  817. is that God

  818. supernaturally

  819. raised Jesus

  820. from the dead.

  821. How do you explain

  822. the empty tomb?

  823. There's more

  824. writing on this

  825. than just history.

  826. There's more

  827. writing on the resurrection

  828. than the question

  829. did it happen

  830. or not?

  831. It's bigger

  832. than that.

  833. Here's what's

  834. writing on it.

  835. Who did Jesus

  836. claim to be?

  837. That's what's

  838. writing on the resurrection.

  839. Did you know

  840. that he claimed

  841. to be God?

  842. He said,

  843. I and the Father

  844. are one.

  845. Before Abraham

  846. was,

  847. I am,

  848. as in the great

  849. I am,

  850. God.

  851. He claimed that

  852. for himself.

  853. He taught things

  854. like this.

  855. The human problem

  856. is not an external

  857. problem.

  858. It's an internal

  859. problem.

  860. What makes us

  861. dirty in God's

  862. eyes is not

  863. outside of us,

  864. it's inside of us.

  865. It's called sin.

  866. That's what he taught.

  867. He taught his kingdom

  868. was going to come

  869. and spread.

  870. He taught that he

  871. was going to come

  872. back one day

  873. and make all

  874. wrongs right,

  875. that he was going

  876. to bring justice

  877. for everything.

  878. And then there

  879. was his miracles.

  880. He calmed seas.

  881. He cast out demons.

  882. He cured diseases.

  883. He raised people

  884. from the dead.

  885. If the resurrection

  886. did not take place,

  887. all of this about

  888. Jesus,

  889. nothing.

  890. It doesn't mean

  891. anything.

  892. Because he himself

  893. said,

  894. I'm going to die

  895. three days later.

  896. I'm going to be

  897. raised from the dead.

  898. So if Jesus

  899. was not raised

  900. from the dead,

  901. do you know

  902. what that means?

  903. Jesus is either

  904. a liar

  905. or he is

  906. a lunatic.

  907. He's a liar

  908. if he wasn't

  909. raised from the dead

  910. because what he

  911. said about himself

  912. and what would

  913. happen didn't

  914. come true.

  915. And it cast doubt

  916. on everything else

  917. he said about himself.

  918. If he wasn't

  919. raised from the dead,

  920. he could be a lunatic.

  921. Which means

  922. he believed

  923. that he was

  924. really God

  925. in the flesh,

  926. but in actuality

  927. he wasn't.

  928. He just lost

  929. his marbles.

  930. He was not

  931. in his right mind.

  932. That's if

  933. Jesus was not

  934. raised from the dead.

  935. But if Jesus

  936. was raised

  937. from the dead,

  938. that puts

  939. Jesus

  940. in a camp

  941. all

  942. by himself.

  943. He's not

  944. a liar.

  945. He's not a lunatic.

  946. He's Lord

  947. of

  948. all.

  949. Because what

  950. he said

  951. would happen

  952. happened.

  953. He said

  954. happened.

  955. God in the flesh,

  956. he made this

  957. outrageous claim.

  958. I am the way,

  959. the truth,

  960. and life.

  961. No one comes

  962. to the Father

  963. but through me.

  964. If you want to be

  965. saved,

  966. if you want to go

  967. to heaven,

  968. you need to come

  969. through me.

  970. That's his claim.

  971. There's no other

  972. name under heaven

  973. which man can be

  974. saved.

  975. That's what's

  976. riding on this.

  977. It's who Jesus

  978. is.

  979. God in the flesh,

  980. teacher bar none,

  981. the one who would

  982. return and make

  983. all things right.

  984. What's riding on

  985. the resurrection?

  986. Who Jesus

  987. really is

  988. and what he

  989. offers.

  990. He offers

  991. real forgiveness.

  992. On Good Friday,

  993. we celebrate

  994. Good Friday

  995. because Christians

  996. believe that's the

  997. day that Jesus

  998. was killed,

  999. crucified,

  1000. put to death

  1001. for all the sins

  1002. of those who

  1003. would one day

  1004. believe in him.

  1005. So think about it

  1006. this way.

  1007. Friday is when

  1008. the payment was

  1009. made.

  1010. Sunday was when

  1011. we got notice

  1012. that the payment

  1013. was accepted.

  1014. Jesus rose

  1015. from the dead

  1016. and it was this

  1017. declaration by God

  1018. saying payment

  1019. received in full,

  1020. my wrath

  1021. fully satisfied.

  1022. See what's

  1023. riding on this?

  1024. If Jesus was not

  1025. raised from the

  1026. dead, you know

  1027. what Paul says?

  1028. We're still in

  1029. our sins.

  1030. The resurrection

  1031. points to real

  1032. forgiveness and of

  1033. course the resurrection

  1034. points to real

  1035. hope.

  1036. our Savior's alive.

  1037. He's not dead.

  1038. The resurrection

  1039. demonstrates Jesus'

  1040. victory over death.

  1041. Death could not

  1042. hold him down.

  1043. So do you know

  1044. what that means

  1045. for Christians?

  1046. We have confidence

  1047. that our Savior's

  1048. gone before us.

  1049. We don't need to

  1050. fear death now.

  1051. Jesus is our

  1052. resurrection and

  1053. life.

  1054. If we believe

  1055. him though we

  1056. die yet we

  1057. shall live because

  1058. our Savior lives.

  1059. Peter calls him

  1060. our living hope.

  1061. What's riding on

  1062. the resurrection?

  1063. Who Jesus really

  1064. is.

  1065. Real forgiveness

  1066. and real hope.

  1067. How do you

  1068. respond?

  1069. How do you

  1070. respond to

  1071. something like

  1072. this?

  1073. How do you

  1074. respond to

  1075. this message

  1076. of Jesus

  1077. God in the

  1078. flesh crucified

  1079. on Friday

  1080. raised from the

  1081. dead on Sunday?

  1082. How do you

  1083. respond?

  1084. I'll give you

  1085. five options.

  1086. How's that?

  1087. You like options?

  1088. First is this.

  1089. You can deny

  1090. him.

  1091. Reject him

  1092. outright.

  1093. Maybe you're

  1094. the type that

  1095. says you know

  1096. what I don't

  1097. believe in the

  1098. supernatural stuff.

  1099. Dead people

  1100. stay dead.

  1101. They don't come

  1102. back to life.

  1103. Sorry I don't

  1104. buy it.

  1105. Okay.

  1106. Or maybe you're

  1107. saying you know

  1108. what it's a good

  1109. case I can see

  1110. why Jesus would

  1111. be Lord of all

  1112. but you know

  1113. what I really

  1114. love my sin.

  1115. I don't want to

  1116. change my life.

  1117. I like what I

1118. get to do and I

  1119. know if I bowed

  1120. my knee to Jesus

  1121. I'd have to give

  1122. it up.

  1123. Just as long as

  1124. you know why

  1125. you're denying

  1126. him.

  1127. So you can

  1128. deny him.

  1129. Option two.

  1130. You can inquire

  1131. about him.

  1132. Pull a Peter.

  1133. Run to the tomb.

  1134. Explore.

  1135. Is it empty?

  1136. It's going to

  1137. hold up.

  1138. Ask the question

  1139. did it happen

  1140. or not?

  1141. Let that drive

  1142. the conversation.

  1143. Inquire about him.

  1144. But realize

  1145. when you inquire

  1146. about Jesus

  1147. you're going to

  1148. have to eventually

  1149. make a decision

  1150. of whether

  1151. he's Lord of all

  1152. or not.

  1153. And so the

  1154. third option is

  1155. to decide

  1156. to follow him.

  1157. To bow your

  1158. knee to Jesus.

  1159. To become

  1160. a Christian.

  1161. Here's how you know

  1162. it's time to become

  1163. a Christian.

  1164. you become aware

  1165. of your own sin.

  1166. And you become

  1167. aware that your

  1168. sin is against

  1169. the Holy God

  1170. and that his

  1171. just wrath

  1172. is over you.

  1173. And then you

  1174. also know

  1175. that this

  1176. same God

  1177. whose wrath

  1178. is just

  1179. has provided

  1180. a Savior

  1181. for you.

  1182. Who was put

  1183. to death

  1184. for you.

  1185. and was raised

  1186. from the dead

  1187. for you.

  1188. When you realize

  1189. this information

  1190. when that gets

  1191. real personal

  1192. like that

  1193. man I'm a sinner

  1194. I need a Savior.

  1195. God's provided

  1196. this Savior

  1197. who died

  1198. and was raised

  1199. from the dead.

  1200. You're ready

  1201. to become a Christian.

  1202. Put your faith

  1203. in Jesus.

  1204. The Bible

  1205. describes it

  1206. as repentance

  1207. and faith.

  1208. Turning from

  1209. your sinful ways

  1210. your sinful life

  1211. and trusting

  1212. in Jesus.

  1213. It's decisive.

  1214. You can decide

  1215. to become

  1216. a Christian today

  1217. on Easter Sunday

  1218. 2015.

  1219. All you need

  1220. to do is

  1221. just say to Jesus

  1222. who's alive

  1223. I'll take it.

  1224. I believe it.

  1225. I believe

  1226. who you are.

  1227. I believe

  1228. you died

  1229. and I believe

  1230. you rose from

  1231. the dead

  1232. and I believe

  1233. you did it

  1234. for me

  1235. to rescue me

  1236. from my sin.

  1237. That's all

  1238. you need to do.

  1239. If you do

  1240. that today

  1241. would you let

  1242. me know?

  1243. I would be

  1244. so glad

  1245. to know.

  1246. Fourth thing

  1247. for Christians

  1248. in the room

  1249. your salvation

  1250. is based

  1251. upon the death

  1252. and resurrection

  1253. Jesus.

  1254. You're saved

  1255. because Jesus

  1256. was crucified

  1257. and raised

  1258. from the dead.

  1259. But did you

  1260. know that

  1261. the resurrection

  1262. of Jesus

  1263. provides a

  1264. very potent

  1265. motivation

  1266. to continue

  1267. to follow Jesus

  1268. after becoming

  1269. a Christian?

  1270. Check this out.

  1271. Any Christians

  1272. in the room

  1273. have ever had

  1274. doubts about

  1275. the Christian faith?

  1276. I have.

  1277. I've talked

  1278. to some

  1279. very smart

  1280. people

  1281. and I'm

  1282. like oh

  1283. that's a

  1284. really good

  1285. point.

  1286. You know

  1287. what to do?

  1288. Did the

  1289. resurrection

  1290. of Jesus

  1291. Christ

  1292. happen or

  1293. not?

  1294. It provides

  1295. encouragement

  1296. for a

  1297. questioning

  1298. soul.

  1299. Or maybe

  1300. you're facing

  1301. some danger

  1302. because you're

  1303. sticking your

  1304. neck out

  1305. as a Christian

  1306. in your

  1307. workplace

  1308. or your

  1309. school

  1310. or with

  1311. your

  1312. non-believing

  1313. family and

  1314. friends and

  1315. they're giving

  1316. you some

  1317. heat for it

  1318. and you're

  1319. like is

  1320. this worth

  1321. it?

  1322. Was Jesus

  1323. raised from

  1324. the dead

  1325. or not?

  1326. It's a

  1327. historical event

  1328. that happened.

  1329. Be encouraged

  1330. by that.

  1331. Maybe you're

  1332. in despair

  1333. brother.

  1334. Maybe you're

  1335. in despair

  1336. sister.

  1337. Going through

  1338. some kind

  1339. of divorce.

  1340. You've been

  1341. diagnosed with

  1342. a disease.

  1343. You're facing

  1344. your own

  1345. death.

  1346. You're seeing

  1347. devastation.

  1348. Did the

  1349. resurrection of

  1350. Jesus Christ

  1351. happen or

  1352. not?

  1353. Because if it

  1354. happened, God's

  1355. got a plan for

  1356. everything.

  1357. Maybe you're a

  1358. Christian who's

  1359. distracted.

  1360. Maybe you're

  1361. being lulled

  1362. to sleep by

  1363. some lullabies

  1364. of the world.

  1365. The resurrection

  1366. is like spiritual

  1367. smelling salts

  1368. for the Christian

  1369. soul.

  1370. It wakes you

  1371. up.

  1372. It snaps you

  1373. out of it.

  1374. It either

  1375. happened or

  1376. it didn't.

  1377. It's very

  1378. clarifying.

  1379. Or maybe

  1380. you're a

  1381. Christian who's

  1382. being tempted

  1383. to devilish

  1384. delights.

  1385. Desires of

  1386. the flesh.

  1387. Here's how the

  1388. resurrection

  1389. functions for

  1390. you.

  1391. God has

  1392. united you

  1393. to the

  1394. Savior who

  1395. died and

  1396. was raised

  1397. for you.

  1398. Death, sin,

  1399. sin no longer

  1400. has any power

  1401. over you.

  1402. Therefore, you

  1403. can now say

  1404. no to sin

  1405. with a smile

  1406. because you

  1407. would rather

  1408. please Jesus

  1409. than satisfy

  1410. your flesh.

  1411. That's what the

  1412. resurrection is.

  1413. It happened.

  1414. I've been

  1415. raised with

  1416. Jesus.

  1417. The fifth

  1418. option is

  1419. this.

  1420. If you've

  1421. become a

  1422. Christian,

  1423. you go

  1424. public.

  1425. You go

  1426. public.

  1427. You go

  1428. public with

  1429. becoming a

  1430. Christian.

  1431. It's

  1432. called

  1433. baptism.

  1434. Baptism is

  1435. a declaration,

  1436. an outward

  1437. declaration of

  1438. an inward

  1439. change.

  1440. When someone

  1441. becomes a

  1442. Christian,

  1443. they're united

  1444. to death in

  1445. Christ's death

  1446. and resurrection.

  1447. They become

  1448. one with

  1449. Jesus.

  1450. And what

  1451. baptism is,

  1452. is saying to

  1453. anybody who

  1454. would care to

  1455. listen, I

  1456. become one

  1457. with Jesus.

  1458. You see this

  1459. pool of water

  1460. here?

  1461. The water

  1462. represents death.

  1463. And so we

  1464. have five

  1465. people going

  1466. to be

  1467. baptized this

  1468. morning.

  1469. And each

  1470. one, I'm

  1471. going to ask

  1472. them two

  1473. questions.

  1474. Have you

  1475. put your

  1476. faith in

  1477. Jesus Christ

  1478. alone for

  1479. the forgiveness

  1480. of your sins,

  1481. the promise of

  1482. eternal life?

  1483. Yes.

  1484. Is it your

  1485. purpose, desire

  1486. to follow Jesus

  1487. all the days of

  1488. your life, no

  1489. matter what

  1490. happens?

  1491. Yes.

  1492. And I'm

  1493. going to say,

  1494. based on your

  1495. public profession

  1496. of faith, I

  1497. baptize you in

  1498. the name of the

  1499. Father, Son, and

  1500. the Holy Spirit.

  1501. And I'm

  1502. going to say,

  1503. united with

  1504. Christ in

  1505. his death,

  1506. under the

  1507. water,

  1508. raised with

  1509. Christ to

  1510. newness of

  1511. life.

  1512. What they're

  1513. saying is that

  1514. they have been

  1515. united with

  1516. Christ in

  1517. his death and

  1518. resurrection.

  1519. You get it?

  1520. It's awesome.

  1521. I couldn't sleep

  1522. last night because

  1523. I was so excited

  1524. about this.

  1525. Before we go

  1526. there, the

  1527. resurrection either

  1528. happened or it

  1529. didn't.

  1530. it's either the

  1531. world's biggest

  1532. con job or it's

  1533. the greatest news

  1534. the world could

  1535. ever hear.

  1536. Because the

  1537. resurrection

  1538. verifies who

  1539. Jesus is and

  1540. his offer of

  1541. real forgiveness

  1542. and real hope

  1543. for any who

  1544. would believe.

  1545. Let me pray and

  1546. then we'll start

  1547. doing some

  1548. baptizing.

  1549. Lord Jesus, we

  1550. do thank you so

  1551. much for who you

  1552. are and what

  1553. you've done.

  1554. God, we give you

  1555. praise for the

  1556. resurrection of

  1557. Jesus.

1558. For those of us in

  1559. the room who are

  1560. Christians, God, you

  1561. be praised.

  1562. Thank you for

  1563. uniting us to

  1564. Jesus.

  1565. Thank you that we

  1566. have the promise of

  1567. forgiveness of sins

1568. and the hope of a

  1569. life eternal

  1570. because our

  1571. Savior reigns.

  1572. God, I pray that

  1573. you would do your

  1574. work now.

  1575. We thank you for

  1576. your word.

  1577. We thank you, God.

  1578. There's no question

  1579. from the Bible that

  1580. Jesus has been

  1581. raised from the

  1582. dead.

  1583. Thank you, Jesus.

  1584. In your name we

  1585. pray.

  1586. Amen.
