  1. Do you guys smell that?

  2. I smell spiritual street fight going on.

  3. I need my biblical binoculars.

  4. Not big enough.

  5. Bring out the big boy.

  6. My big biblical binoculars.

  7. And the thing about this baby is

  8. I can hear some stuff as well.

  9. Okay, dial it in, check it out.

  10. All right, what do we got here?

  11. University, freshman philosophy class,

  12. we got a prof saying something to the extent of

  13. in the 21st century,

  14. can a rational human being actually believe

  15. in the God of the Bible?

  16. Now, our war isn't against flesh and blood.

  17. But that smells like a spiritual street fight to me.

  18. We've got something else going on.

  19. We've got some distortion going on.

  20. There is a 38-year-old man

  21. with three kids.

  22. His wife's in bed

  23. because she is duking it out every day.

  24. He is sitting in front of a computer screen

  25. clicking on porn site after porn site.

  26. It's a distortion of God's good gift of sexuality.

  27. Oh, Lord, he's going to get ensnared.

  28. There's a spiritual street fight going on.

  29. Three clicks out, got a church,

  30. splitting up, taking parties, two parties.

  31. What's the fight over?

  32. Oh, look at that.

  33. It's the color of the sanctuary carpet.

  34. And yes, it is a foothold for the devil.

  35. There's a spiritual street fight going on.

  36. Dear brothers and sisters,

  37. war is raging.

  38. We're under attack.

  39. In the early 1940s,

  40. the U.S. transformed itself

  41. from a peacetime production

  42. to wartime production,

  43. and we must transform our thinking

  44. from peacetime to wartime in 2015.

  45. We're not at peace.

  46. God's people are not at peace.

  47. Peace with God.

  48. But we have a conflict at hand.

  49. In order to stand firm against our enemy,

  50. the devil,

  51. we must know our enemy and his schemes.

  52. We cannot ignore our enemy

  53. or be intrigued by our enemy,

  54. but we must stand against the schemes of the devil.

  55. In order to stand firm against him,

  56. we've got to know some things about him.

  57. We've got to do some recon on him.

  58. So let's do some biblical recon

  59. on our enemy of our souls.

  60. First, if you would open up to your Bibles

  61. to Ephesians 6, verse 11,

    Ephesians 6:11

  62. this is going to be our starting point.

  63. I'm going to be covering

  64. some biblical ground this morning.

  65. And so what we're going to be looking at

  66. is different things the Bible says

  67. about the devil, his demons,

  68. his network, and how he tempts us.

  69. Ephesians 6, 11.

  70. Put on the whole armor of God

  71. that you may be able to stand

  72. against the schemes of the devil.

  73. There is a devil,

  74. and he is scheming,

  75. and we've got to be wise to it.

  76. There are four things this morning

  77. that I want you to see

  78. as we do biblical recon.

  79. First, we're going to look at

  80. the devil's background.

  81. Then we're going to look at

  82. the devil's network.

  83. He's a terror network.

  84. And then we're going to look at

  85. the devil's tactics,

  86. his methods.

  87. And then we're going to look at

  88. the devil's greatest weakness,

  89. his greatest enemy.

  90. The right man is on our side.

  91. So in order for us to stand

  92. against the devil,

  93. let's get to know him.

  94. Put on the sure footing

  95. that nothing can separate

  96. us from the love of God

  97. in Christ Jesus.

  98. His background,

  99. his origin,

  100. he was created by God.

  101. In Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  102. God created the heavens

  103. and the earth.

  104. And we're not explicitly told

  105. when he created the angelic host,

  106. but it was in the Genesis 1

  107. time frame.

  108. He created a myriad of angels.

  109. And they're glorious.

  110. And they're created to serve

  111. his purposes.

  112. And so in Genesis 1.31,

  113. God saw everything that he made

  114. in heaven and on earth.

  115. He was very good.

  116. Including all of the angels.

  117. But then he rebelled.

  118. When did this angelic rebellion happen?

  119. Well, there's not a specific time

  120. we're given in the Bible.

  121. But we are given a time frame.

  122. And so if we were to look

  123. at Genesis chapter 1 again,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  124. chapter 1.31,

  125. God saw that everything he made

  126. and behold, it was very good.

  127. So there had not been

  128. an angelic rebellion

  129. up until that point.

  130. But if you turn to Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3:1

  131. verse 1,

  132. there's a serpent

  133. that enters the garden.

  134. And so sometime between

  135. Genesis 1.31

  136. and Genesis 3.1,

  137. there was an angelic rebellion

  138. that took place.

  139. Now what was the cause

  140. of this rebellion?

  141. What was the cause

  142. of this fall?

  143. Why did the devil

  144. rebel against God?

  145. Well, there's a couple places

  146. we can turn,

  147. but the place I want you

  148. to go to right now

  149. is maybe a little surprising.

  150. It's 1 Timothy chapter 3.

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  151. Might ring a bell

  152. because what we're going to look at

  153. is 1 Timothy 3, verse 6,

    1 Timothy 3:6

  154. and it's right in the middle

  155. of qualifications for an elder.

  156. And we read in 1 Timothy 3, 6,

  157. speaking of a potential elder,

  158. he must not be a recent convert,

  159. for he may become puffed up

  160. with conceit

  161. and fall into the condemnation

  162. of the devil.

  163. Why did the devil rebel?

  164. He lifted himself up against God.

  165. It was pride.

  166. He wanted something

  167. that God alone would have.

  168. Pride.

  169. Pride was the reason he fell.

  170. That's the condemnation of the devil.

  171. And with him,

  172. he brought a host of angels

  173. that became demons.

  174. The evil one has a variety of aliases.

  175. He goes by a variety of different names

  176. throughout the Bible.

  177. Satan.

  178. Job 1, 6.

  179. It means adversary.

  180. In the New Testament,

  181. the most common name

  182. for the evil one is the devil.

  183. It also means adversary or accuser.

  184. Jesus called him the tempter

  185. in Matthew 4, 3.

  186. Jesus spoke of him in Matthew 12

  187. as Beezlebub,

  188. which means master of the house.

  189. Enemy.

  190. Evil one.

  191. Belial,

  192. which means worthless.

  193. The deceiver,

  194. Revelation 12.

  195. John 12,

  196. 2 Corinthians 4,

  197. the God of this world,

  198. the ruler of this world,

  199. who blinds unbelievers

  200. from seeing the light

  201. of the gospel

  202. of the glory of Christ,

  203. who ensnares people

  204. and holds them captive

  205. to do his will,

  206. 2 Timothy 2, 26.

  207. He's the prince of the power of the air,

  208. the spirit that is now at work

  209. in the sons of disobedience,

  210. Ephesians 2, 2.

  211. He's the serpent of Genesis 3, 1

  212. and a great dragon of Revelation 12, 3.

  213. He is a liar and the father of lies,

  214. John 8, 44.

  215. He is a murderer,

  216. John 8, 44.

  217. And then when we get back

  218. into Revelation,

  219. we read that he is Abaddon,

  220. Apollyon,

  221. the destroyer.

  222. And so as we peruse

  223. these names of our enemy,

  224. we get a sense of his purpose.

  225. The enemy of our soul

  226. is seeking to destroy

  227. God's plan for the fullness of time,

  228. which is to unite all things

  229. in our Lord and King Jesus.

  230. God is seeking to reconcile

  231. to himself all things,

  232. whether on earth or in heaven

  233. through Christ.

  234. And so what the devil

  235. is seeking to do

  236. in his rebellion

  237. is oppose God's saving work

  238. through Christ.

  239. There's some background

  240. on our enemy.

  241. Now let's talk about

  242. the network he uses.

  243. You've heard of a terror network.

  244. I know you have.

  245. Organized terrorist cells

  246. that are strategically positioned

  247. and poised to destroy

  248. in order to terrorize.

  249. We've all felt that.

  250. The devil has his own terror network.

  251. It's an evil network

  252. bent on deception

  253. and destruction.

  254. And what we see

  255. in Ephesians 2,

  256. 1 through 3

  257. is his coordinated network.

  258. So would you turn to Ephesians 2,

  259. 1 through 3,

  260. and we're going to see

  261. three enemies

  262. that are coordinated

  263. to do us harm.

  264. So Ephesians 2,

  265. and you were dead

  266. in the trespasses and sins

  267. in which you once walked,

  268. following the course

  269. of this world,

  270. following the prince

  271. of the power of the air,

  272. the spirit that's now at work

  273. in the sons of disobedience,

  274. among whom we all once lived

  275. in the passions

  276. of our flesh,

  277. carrying out the desires

  278. of the body and the mind,

  279. and we're by nature

  280. children of wrath

  281. like the rest of mankind.

  282. The devil uses

  283. a coordinated network

  284. of himself

  285. and his demons,

  286. the world,

  287. and our flesh.

  288. the first two enemies

  289. are outside of us.

  290. The last enemy

  291. is inside of us.

  292. So let's just take these

  293. one by one.

  294. Again, I want to help you

  295. understand

  296. what the Bible says

  297. how Satan coordinates

  298. his resistance

  299. to God's purposes.

  300. So the first enemy

  301. of this network

  302. is the devil.

  303. We've already been

  304. talking about him,

  305. but what I want you to see

  306. in Ephesians 6.12

  307. is that he has got

  308. people,

  309. things working for him.

  310. The demonic host,

  311. the rulers,

  312. authorities,

  313. spiritual forces

  314. over this present darkness,

  315. as Colossians 1.13

  316. calls it,

  317. the domain of darkness.

  318. We're not told

  319. how the things work out.

  320. We're not told

  321. if there's a hierarchy.

  322. We're not told

  323. if there are, like,

  324. locative,

  325. angelic spirits

  326. or anything like that.

  327. But there seems to be

  328. a dispersion of evil.

  329. As an aside,

  330. one of the things

  331. you cannot miss

  332. when you're reading

  333. through the Gospels

  334. is Jesus'

  335. regular confrontation

  336. with demons.

  337. And he kicks them around.

  338. These things are real.

  339. Here we are

  340. in the 21st century,

  341. and we're talking

  342. about demons.

  343. Because God's Word

  344. talks about demons.

  345. So the devil

  346. and his demonic host

  347. are actively

  348. exercising control

  349. over the domain

  350. of darkness,

  351. this present age,

  352. by blinding the minds

  353. of unbelievers

  354. to keep them

  355. from seeing

  356. the light

  357. of the glory

  358. of the Gospel

  359. of Jesus Christ.

  360. 2 Corinthians 4.4

  361. Their whole operation

  362. is built

  363. on deception

  364. with the intent

  365. to destroy.

  366. It is malicious.

  367. It's opposed to God.

  368. The domain of darkness

  369. is real.

  370. It's being manipulated

  371. by the devil

  372. and his demons

  373. in order to destroy.

  374. So having looked

  375. at this first enemy,

  376. let's now move

  377. on to the next.

  378. The spiritual domain

  379. of darkness

  380. interfaces with

  381. our everyday life

  382. with what the Bible

  383. calls

  384. the world.

  385. In Ephesians 2.2,

  386. we read that

  387. before we became

  388. Christians,

  389. we were following

  390. the course

  391. of this world

  392. while following

  393. the prince

  394. of the power

  395. of the air.

  396. This is the same

  397. use of the word

  398. world that we find

  399. in 1 John 2.15-17.

  400. Listen to this.

  401. Do not love

  402. the world

  403. or the things

  404. in the world.

  405. For all that

  406. is in the world,

  407. the desires

  408. of the flesh

  409. and the desires

  410. of the eyes

  411. and the pride

  412. and possessions

  413. is not from the Father

  414. but is from the world

  415. and the world

  416. is passing away

  417. along with its desires.

  418. But whoever

  419. does the will

  420. of God

  421. abides forever.

  422. He's talking

  423. about believers

  424. right there.

  425. So what we need

  426. to understand

  427. is how this word

  428. world

  429. is being used

  430. here

  431. and in other passages

  432. like John 3.16.

  433. For God so loved

  434. the world

  435. that He gave

  436. His one and only Son.

  437. In these contexts,

  438. God is talking

  439. about people.

  440. People

  441. who love

  442. darkness

  443. more than light.

  444. People

  445. living in

  446. rebellion

  447. to God.

  448. People

  449. blinded

  450. by the ruler

  451. of this world

  452. and living

  453. for things

  454. that grieve God.

  455. That's the world.

  456. So the world

  457. in these contexts

  458. is speaking

  459. of people,

  460. image bearers

  461. of God

  462. living in darkness

  463. because they've

  464. been blinded.

  465. And we live

  466. among the majority

  467. of these people.

  468. They form

  469. the majority

  470. of people

  471. around us.

  472. But as Christians

  473. we are no longer

  474. of the world.

  475. John 17.16.

  476. We've been

  477. transferred

  478. from the domain

  479. of darkness

  480. into the kingdom

  481. of the beloved Son

  482. in whom we have

  483. redemption.

  484. We've been called

  485. out of the world.

  486. We're in the world

  487. but not of the world.

  488. John 17.18.

  489. And what you need

  490. to realize

  491. is this.

  492. That all these people

  493. living in darkness

  494. blinded by the ruler

  495. of this world

  496. they create

  497. currents.

  498. deceptively dark

  499. and destructive

  500. currents.

  501. You know

  502. summer's coming.

  503. You know what I'm

  504. talking about?

  505. Summer is around

  506. the corner.

  507. Do I have an amen?

  508. And when I hear

  509. the word summer

  510. I quickly think

  511. of the word

  512. swimming.

  513. We have some

  514. friends that

  515. regularly invite us

  516. as a family

  517. to come over

  518. and swim and play

  519. in their circular

  520. above ground pool.

  521. And one of the

  522. things that we

  523. get to do is

  524. get everybody

  525. in the pool

  526. and we start

  527. all walking

  528. in the same

  529. direction

  530. in this circular

  531. pool.

  532. And in a short

  533. amount of time

  534. with all these

  535. people walking

  536. in the same

  537. direction

  538. a current

  539. is created.

  540. A current

  541. strong enough

  542. to sweep people

  543. off their feet

  544. if they're not

  545. firmly planted.

  546. And here's what

  547. you must realize

  548. about the world.

  549. The world

  550. creates cultural

  551. currents that

  552. are contrary

  553. to the cause

  554. of Christ.

  555. When non-Christians

  556. are living

  557. in close proximity

  558. who are opposed

  559. to God

  560. and blinded

  561. walk through

  562. life together

  563. they create

  564. currents.

  565. It's not water.

  566. It's ways

  567. of thinking.

  568. Ways of living.

  569. Now don't mistake

  570. what I'm saying.

  571. We all have

  572. loved ones

  573. that have yet

  574. to be transferred

  575. from the domain

  576. of darkness

  577. into the kingdom

  578. of Christ.

  579. What we want

  580. most for them

  581. is for them

  582. to know

  583. Christ the King.

  584. But we must

  585. be aware

  586. that these

  587. non-Christians

  588. we love

  589. can be caught

  590. up in these

  591. cultural currents

  592. that oppose

  593. Christ.

  594. What I want

  595. to remind you

  596. of this morning

  597. is that these

  598. currents created

  599. by the world

  600. are part

  601. of the devil's

  602. destructive network.

  603. He employs

  604. the world

  605. for his

  606. destructive

  607. purposes.

  608. He's the

  609. prince of

  610. the power

  611. of the air.

  612. He's the

  613. god of this

  614. world.

  615. The ruler

  616. of the age.

  617. So the

  618. connection we

  619. see in

  620. Ephesians 2

  621. is following

  622. the course

  623. of this

  624. world,

  625. following the

  626. prince of

  627. the power

  628. of the air,

  629. the god

  630. of this

  631. world.

  632. He's behind

  633. it.

  634. And as

  635. Christians,

  636. we cannot

  637. live for

  638. what the

  639. world lives

  640. for because

  641. the world

  642. does not

  643. live for

  644. Christ.

  645. It's that

  646. simple.

  647. As

  648. Christians,

  649. we create

  650. our own

  651. currents that

  652. are Christ

  653. pleasing and

  654. Christ like

  655. and that will

  656. oftentimes come

  657. into conflict

  658. with the way

  659. the world

  660. is living.

  661. And what the

  662. devil and his

  663. demonic host are

  664. very effective at

  665. doing is

  666. tempting us.

  667. through the

  668. world,

  669. appealing to

  670. the desires

  671. of our

  672. flesh.

  673. What I'm

  674. wanting you to

  675. see here is

  676. that once we

  677. follow the

  678. prince of the

  679. power of the

  680. air, once we

  681. walk, we

  682. follow the

  683. course, the

  684. currents of

  685. the world, but

  686. we can't make

  687. the mistake of

  688. thinking that

  689. the devil doesn't

  690. use the world

  691. for his purposes.

  692. He does.

  693. He employs

  694. the world for

  695. his deceptive

  696. and destructive

  697. purposes by

  698. tempting our

  699. flesh.

  700. We looked at

  701. two enemies,

  702. let's look at

  703. the third, the

  704. flesh.

  705. The first two

  706. enemies, the

  707. devil and the

  708. world are

  709. outside of us.

  710. This last

  711. enemy coordinated

  712. against us is

  713. the flesh, a.k.a.

  714. the sinful

  715. nature.

  716. Your flesh, if

  717. you're a

  718. Christian, is

  719. that part of

  720. you that

  721. continues to

  722. desire things

  723. that God

  724. forbids.

  725. And before

  726. you were saved,

  727. you were ruled

  728. by your

  729. flesh.

  730. And Satan

  731. exploited it.

  732. But when you

  733. were saved, you

  734. were united to

  735. Christ and His

  736. death and

  737. resurrection.

  738. And the power

  739. of sin in you

  740. was broken,

  741. defeated by the

  742. cross.

  743. So you,

  744. Christian, have

  745. been united with

  746. Christ and

  747. you're no longer

  748. enslaved to

  749. sin.

  750. But that

  751. doesn't mean

  752. sin is no

  753. longer present

  754. and influential

  755. in your life.

  756. You still have a

  757. sinful nature.

  758. It no longer

  759. has dominion

  760. over you, but

  761. it's still

  762. present in you.

  763. And by the

  764. way, God has

  765. sent His

  766. Spirit to dwell

  767. inside of you

  768. and so that

  769. when you have

  770. desires that

  771. are not pleasing

  772. to God, the

  773. Holy Spirit

  774. will confront

  775. them.

  776. Galatians 5,

  777. 15 and on.

  778. But what

  779. we're talking

  780. about is how

  781. the devil's

  782. destructive network

  783. uses the world

  784. to tempt

  785. your flesh.

  786. What He's

  787. seeking to do

  788. is exploit

  789. your sinful

  790. nature through

  791. the world.

  792. Typically.

  793. James 1,

  794. 14 is very

  795. helpful because

  796. I think it's

  797. very important

  798. that we make

  799. a distinction

  800. right now.

  801. James 1,

  802. 14 says,

  803. this, but

  804. each person

  805. is tempted

  806. when he's

  807. lured and

  808. enticed by

  809. his own

  810. desire.

  811. We are

  812. responsible for

  813. our sinful

  814. choices.

  815. We cannot

  816. blame our

  817. sin on the

  818. devil.

  819. That's where

  820. I'm trying to

  821. make a distinction.

  822. He tempts us,

  823. but we're

  824. responsible for

  825. our choices.

  826. Yes, He's

  827. actively seeking

  828. to tempt us

  829. through deception

  830. to destroy us.

  831. Yes, it's not

  832. fair.

  833. He doesn't play

  834. by the rules.

  835. He's forceful.

  836. He makes it

  837. really difficult.

  838. He's seeking to

  839. exploit any and

  840. every opportunity

  841. we give Him.

  842. It's true.

  843. But what a

  844. Christian can never

  845. say is that his

  846. or her sin can't

  847. say, the devil

  848. made me do it.

  849. Why not?

  850. He may have

  851. tempted us.

  852. He may have

  853. used the world

  854. to tempt us,

  855. but He did not

  856. cause us to

  857. disobey our

  858. God.

  859. So when it

  860. comes to our

  861. flesh, there's

  862. different commands

  863. in our Bibles.

  864. One of them is

  865. Romans 8.13,

  866. which calls us

  867. as Christians

  868. to put to

  869. death the

  870. deeds of the

  871. body.

  872. We're to be

  873. warring against

  874. our flesh.

  875. We're responsible.

  876. Now this raises

  877. an interesting

  878. question, and

  879. maybe some of

  880. you have already

  881. been asking it.

  882. It's this.

  883. Can a Christian

  884. be possessed

  885. by a demon?

  886. Has anybody

  887. thought that?

  888. Anybody wondered?

  889. I have.

  890. Well, it depends

  891. upon what you

  892. mean by demon

  893. possession.

  894. If what you

  895. mean by demon

  896. possession is a

  897. demon occupying a

  898. Christian's heart

  899. and mind and

  900. taking over, the

  901. answer to that

  902. question is no.

  903. A Christian can't

  904. be demon

  905. possessed like

  906. that.

  907. A demon cannot

  908. occupy a Christian's

  909. heart and mind.

  910. Do you know

  911. why?

  912. there is

  913. someone, capital

  914. S someone,

  915. already occupying

  916. it.

  917. 1 John 4.4

  918. Greater is

  919. He that is in

  920. you than

  921. He that is in

  922. the world.

  923. And the

  924. greater is He

  925. is specifically

  926. the Holy Spirit

  927. in you.

  928. Greater is He

  929. that is in you

  930. than He that is

  931. in the world.

  932. But if what you

  933. mean by demon

  934. possession is

  935. more like

  936. demonized,

  937. harassed,

  938. attacked,

  939. tempted with

  940. great force and

  941. frequency,

  942. yes, that

  943. happens.

  944. And that is

  945. exactly why God

  946. is calling us to

  947. stand firm against

  948. the schemes of

  949. the devil.

  950. Against the

  951. spiritual forces of

  952. evil that seek to

  953. employ the world

  954. to tempt our

  955. flesh.

  956. So we've been

  957. trying to look at

  958. the devil's

  959. destructive network.

  960. He uses it.

  961. We've seen three

  962. enemies, the devil,

  963. the world, and the

  964. flesh.

  965. And through this

  966. network he attacks

  967. us with common

  968. tactics.

  969. His schemes.

  970. In Ephesians 6.11

  971. we're told to

  972. stand firm against

  973. the schemes of

  974. the devil.

  975. And so the devil

  976. uses network to

  977. try to draw on

  978. us in some

  979. common ways.

  980. And I want to

  981. show you four

  982. ways, four

  983. common tactics

  984. that the devil

  985. seeks to employ

  986. to do us

  987. harm.

  988. The first is

  989. doubt.

  990. Doubt is

  991. destroying trust

  992. in God's

  993. word.

  994. word.

  995. We see it in

  996. Genesis 3

  997. very early on.

  998. The serpent

  999. coming on the

  1000. scene and one

  1001. of his first

  1002. things he asks

  1003. Eve is,

  1004. did God

  1005. actually say

  1006. you should not

  1007. eat of any

  1008. tree in the

  1009. garden?

  1010. Doubt.

  1011. You shall not

  1012. surely die.

  1013. Doubt in God's

  1014. word.

  1015. For God knows

  1016. that when you

  1017. eat of it your

  1018. eyes will be

  1019. opened and you

  1020. will be like

  1021. God knowing good

  1022. needle.

  1023. God is trying to

  1024. win all good

  1025. from you.

  1026. Doubting God.

  1027. Doubting the

  1028. goodness of God's

  1029. word.

  1030. The devil delights

  1031. when he causes

  1032. people to doubt

  1033. God's word.

  1034. And so the way

  1035. that we fight and

  1036. the way that we're

  1037. going to learn to

  1038. fight next week is

  1039. by using God's

  1040. word and trusting

  1041. in God's word when

  1042. faced with temptation.

  1043. I mean our king

  1044. did the same thing

  1045. in Matthew 4.

  1046. So first tactic

  1047. is doubt.

  1048. The second tactic

  1049. is distraction.

  1050. And what

  1051. distraction does

  1052. it destroys

  1053. wholehearted

  1054. devotion to

  1055. Christ.

  1056. Now there are

  1057. full frontal

  1058. distractions but

  1059. more common

  1060. are the

  1061. subtle

  1062. frog

  1063. distractions.

  1064. distractions.

  1065. As in the frog

  1066. in the pot of

  1067. water.

  1068. Apparently,

  1069. and I have not

  1070. personally verified

  1071. this with my own

  1072. experimentation at my

  1073. house,

  1074. but apparently if you

  1075. drop a frog into a

  1076. pot of boiling water

  1077. it will immediately

  1078. jump out.

  1079. Have you guys heard

  1080. that?

  1081. Would you personally

  1082. do the same thing?

  1083. Yes.

1084. But if you put a

1085. frog in a pot of

  1086. warm water and

  1087. incrementally turn

  1088. the heat up until

  1089. it comes to a

  1090. gradual boil,

  1091. that frog in the

  1092. water acclimates

  1093. and eventually

  1094. gets slowly

  1095. cooked.

  1096. The devil is

  1097. patient in his

  1098. distracting us

  1099. unto destruction.

  1100. The devil uses the

  1101. world to distract us

  1102. from giving ourselves

  1103. fully to what

  1104. matters most.

  1105. Wholehearted

  1106. devotion to Christ.

  1107. And here's some of

  1108. the things he uses.

  1109. Busyness.

  1110. Money.

  1111. Entertainment.

  1112. Comfort.

  1113. Exercise.

  1114. Praise of your

  1115. own name.

  1116. He uses these

  1117. things to distract

  1118. us.

  1119. Some of these

  1120. things are in and

  1121. of themselves

  1122. not bad.

  1123. But what the

  1124. devil is seeking

1125. to do is move it

  1126. from good to a

  1127. small g God.

  1128. word.

1129. So we got to be

  1130. careful because the

  1131. devil will exploit

  1132. sinful cravings in

  1133. us to distract us

  1134. from Christ.

  1135. The devil delights

  1136. when he gradually

  1137. deceptively distracts

  1138. us from wholehearted

  1139. devotion to Jesus.

1140. We need his word to

  1141. sniff it out.

  1142. We look at doubt,

  1143. distraction,

  1144. distortion.

  1145. Another tactic of

  1146. the devil.

  1147. Destroying the

  1148. goodness of God's

  1149. design.

  1150. What is

  1151. prostitution?

  1152. What is sex

  1153. trafficking?

  1154. What is pornography?

  1155. Do you know what

  1156. they are?

  1157. They are distortions

  1158. of God's good

  1159. design of sexuality

  1160. that end up

  1161. destroying people.

  1162. We see distortions

  1163. of marriage.

  1164. We see distortions

  1165. of when life

  1166. begins in the

  1167. womb.

  1168. We see distortions

  1169. of male leadership.

  1170. The devil delights

  1171. in distorting

  1172. God's good

  1173. design.

  1174. And what we see

  1175. going on in the

  1176. world is a

  1177. normalizing of

  1178. the distortions.

  1179. We need God's

  1180. word.

  1181. We'll be equipped

  1182. next week

  1183. how to fight

  1184. this.

  1185. The fourth

  1186. tactic is

  1187. division.

  1188. The Satan

  1189. destroying

  1190. God-pleasing

  1191. unity.

  1192. unity.

  1193. Satan

  1194. destroying

  1195. the blood-bought

  1196. unity of

  1197. his people.

  1198. One of the

  1199. themes throughout

  1200. the book of

  1201. Ephesians is

  1202. unity.

  1203. We see it in

  1204. Ephesians 4,

  1205. 1-6.

  1206. Paul exhorts us,

  1207. walk in a manner

  1208. worthy of the

  1209. calling to which

  1210. you've called

  1211. as one

  1212. people.

  1213. One body.

  1214. One Lord.

  1215. One baptism.

  1216. One faith.

  1217. One,

  1218. one,

  1219. one,

  1220. one,

  1221. one.

  1222. Unity.

  1223. In Jesus'

  1224. high priestly

  1225. prayer in

  1226. John 17,

  1227. Jesus prays

  1228. for us and

  1229. he prays that

  1230. we would be

  1231. united and

  1232. united in

  1233. him.

  1234. I mean,

  1235. think about it

  1236. this way.

  1237. God's plan for

  1238. the fullness of

  1239. time is to

  1240. unite all

  1241. things in

  1242. Christ.

  1243. So it makes

  1244. sense that one

  1245. of the devil's

  1246. chief tactics

  1247. is to divide

  1248. the unity of

  1249. God's people.

  1250. Brothers and

  1251. sisters of

  1252. Christ the

  1253. King Church,

  1254. it is safe

  1255. to say that

  1256. the devil and

  1257. his host are

  1258. looking for an

  1259. opportunity to

  1260. divide us.

  1261. It's safe to

  1262. say it.

  1263. It's not if,

  1264. but it's when.

  1265. The devil is

  1266. seeking to

  1267. undermine God's

  1268. unifying work

  1269. in us and

  1270. he's been doing

  1271. a wonderful work

  1272. in this body.

  1273. So we have

  1274. warnings like

  1275. Ephesians 4,

  1276. 26 and 27.

  1277. Be angry and

  1278. do not sin.

  1279. Do not let the

  1280. sun go down on

  1281. your anger and

  1282. give no opportunity

  1283. to the devil.

  1284. The devil is

  1285. looking to

  1286. divide us.

  1287. He's looking to

  1288. undermine and

  1289. divide us as a

  1290. church.

  1291. Let me give you

  1292. some possible

  1293. ways he would

  1294. do that.

  1295. He'll seek to

  1296. divide us over

  1297. doctrine.

  1298. He'll seek to

  1299. divide us over

  1300. worship preferences.

  1301. He'll seek to

  1302. divide us over

  1303. joining the

  1304. Crossway Association.

  1305. He'll seek to

  1306. divide us over

  1307. approving budgets.

  1308. He'll seek to

  1309. divide us over

  1310. decisions regarding

  1311. carpet texture and

  1312. wall color.

  1313. He'll seek to

  1314. divide us over

  1315. hurt feelings.

  1316. Listen to James.

  1317. Listen to this.

  1318. This is so good.

  1319. But if you have

  1320. bitter jealousy and

  1321. selfish ambition in

  1322. your hearts, this

  1323. is not the wisdom

  1324. that comes down

  1325. from above, but

  1326. is earthly,

  1327. worldly,

  1328. unspiritual,

  1329. demonic.

  1330. That's James.

  1331. He goes on to

  1332. say, for where

  1333. jealousy and

  1334. selfish ambition

  1335. exist, also

  1336. known as pride,

  1337. for where

  1338. jealousy and

  1339. selfish ambition

  1340. exist, there will

  1341. be disorder in

  1342. every vile practice,

  1343. also known as

  1344. division.

  1345. But the wisdom

  1346. from above is

  1347. first of all pure,

  1348. then peaceable,

  1349. gentle, open to

  1350. reason, full of

  1351. mercy and good

  1352. fruits, impartial,

  1353. insincere.

  1354. That's Christ-like

  1355. stuff right there.

  1356. That's humility in

  1357. action.

1358. And he goes on to

  1359. say, in a harvest

  1360. of righteousness is

  1361. sown in peace by

  1362. those who make

  1363. peace.

  1364. Unity.

  1365. God is calling

  1366. us to guard

  1367. against the

  1368. divisive efforts

  1369. of the devil.

  1370. One of the things

  1371. I hear somewhat

  1372. frequently is this.

  1373. Christians saying,

  1374. I don't need a

  1375. church.

  1376. I don't need to

  1377. go to church.

  1378. The church is full

  1379. of people who are

  1380. jerks.

  1381. I don't need to

  1382. go to church.

  1383. I'm not making a

  1384. case the church is

  1385. perfect.

  1386. God knows I'm not.

  1387. But isolation is

  1388. exactly what the

  1389. devil wants.

  1390. Anybody watch

  1391. Mutual of Omaha's

  1392. Wild Kingdom?

  1393. What happens on the

  1394. African Serengeti?

  1395. Pride of Lions?

  1396. Remember what they

  1397. do?

  1398. They identify

  1399. weak link.

  1400. Separate weak link.

  1401. Isolate weak link.

  1402. Devour weak link.

  1403. 1 Peter 5.8

  1404. Our enemy, the devil,

  1405. is like a lion

  1406. prowling around

  1407. looking for someone

  1408. to devour.

1409. So for us, what this

  1410. means is instead of

  1411. separating and

  1412. isolating, we

  1413. congregate and

  1414. unite.

  1415. fight.

1416. And we take up arms

  1417. against the devil.

  1418. Doubt, distraction,

  1419. distortion, division are

  1420. all deceptive methods

  1421. the devil uses to

  1422. destroy God's glorious

  1423. purpose in Christ.

  1424. But our God's

  1425. bigger.

  1426. Speaking of Christ,

  1427. let's turn to the

  1428. devil's greatest

  1429. weakness.

  1430. His name is Jesus.

  1431. The devil's weakness,

  1432. his greatest enemy,

  1433. is our Lord and

  1434. King, Jesus Christ,

  1435. who gave himself up

  1436. for us.

  1437. Jesus.

  1438. Did you know that

  1439. Jesus is the

  1440. destroyer of the

  1441. destroyer?

  1442. He will destroy

  1443. the works of the

  1444. devil.

  1445. Christ's death and

  1446. resurrection won the

  1447. decisive victory in

  1448. the battle against the

  1449. devil.

  1450. According to

  1451. Colossians 2.13, the

  1452. cross of Christ disarmed

  1453. the rulers and

  1454. authorities, speaking of

  1455. spiritual powers, and

1456. put them to open shame

  1457. by triumphing over

  1458. them.

  1459. What happened at the

  1460. cross overpowered the

  1461. spiritual forces of

  1462. darkness.

  1463. All things were put

  1464. under his feet.

  1465. Let's back up.

  1466. What was Satan

  1467. thinking when he

  1468. entered Judas in

  1469. order to betray

  1470. Jesus?

  1471. Speculation.

  1472. I think he was

  1473. thinking he was

  1474. going to destroy

  1475. Jesus.

  1476. Apparently, Satan

  1477. did not realize that

1478. what he was doing was

  1479. according to God's

  1480. sovereign, glorious

  1481. plan.

  1482. Jesus not only knew

  1483. Judas would betray

  1484. him, he allowed

  1485. Jesus to betray

  1486. him.

  1487. He willfully went to

  1488. his own death because

  1489. it would be through

  1490. his death and

  1491. resurrection that he

  1492. would destroy death

  1493. and the destroyer.

  1494. Christ is risen.

1495. He is on his throne.

1496. The devil is on the

  1497. run.

  1498. And when Jesus comes

  1499. back, he will

  1500. completely, finally

  1501. dismantle, destroy the

  1502. devil's network and

1503. then throw him by the

  1504. scaly scruff of his

1505. neck into the lake of

  1506. fire.

  1507. That's Revelation 20

    Revelation 20:10

  1508. verse 10.

1509. The devil goes by the

  1510. destroyer.

  1511. Apollyon.

  1512. Way back in Genesis

  1513. chapter 315, the

  1514. proto-evangelium, the

  1515. first gospel, there

  1516. would be a descendant

  1517. of Eve who would

  1518. break the serpent's

  1519. neck.

  1520. There are three

  1521. passages I'd really

1522. like to show you, but

  1523. I'm just going to

  1524. point you to one.

1525. If you would turn to

  1526. Hebrews chapter 2, I

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

1527. want to gird up your

  1528. loins with this,

  1529. strengthen you.

  1530. Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2:14

  1531. verse 14, since

  1532. therefore the children

  1533. share in flesh and

  1534. blood, Jesus himself

  1535. likewise partook of the

  1536. same things.

  1537. He became a man.

  1538. That through death he

  1539. might destroy the one

1540. who has the power of

  1541. death.

  1542. That is the devil.

1543. Did you get it right

  1544. there?

1545. He came to destroy the

1546. works of the devil and

  1547. the devil.

  1548. And deliver all those

  1549. who through fear of

  1550. death were subject to

  1551. lifelong savory.

  1552. The devil's greatest

  1553. weakness is our Lord

  1554. Jesus, who's already

  1555. triumphed and who is

1556. going to work all things

  1557. out.

  1558. His kingdom is

  1559. advancing.

  1560. The kingdom, the domain

  1561. of darkness is

  1562. shrinking.

1563. So let me conclude by

  1564. saying this.

  1565. This morning we've done

  1566. some biblical recon on

  1567. the adversary of our

  1568. souls, the devil.

1569. And what I want you to

1570. walk away with is this.

  1571. Christian, you don't

1572. need to fear the devil.

  1573. He's been defeated.

  1574. His doom is set.

  1575. Yes, he's dangerous.

1576. He prowls around like a

  1577. lion.

1578. But God is for us.

  1579. He hasn't even, he's

1580. given us his own son.

1581. How much along with him

1582. will he give us everything

  1583. we need?

  1584. Nothing can separate us

1585. from the love of God in

  1586. Christ Jesus.

  1587. God is for us.

1588. Next week, we're to go

1589. to the Christian armory to

1590. see what weapons God has

1591. provided for us to stand

  1592. firm against the schemes

  1593. of the devil.

  1594. We know he's been

  1595. defeated.

  1596. He will be destroyed.

  1597. He remains dangerous.

1598. So next week we learn how

1599. to put on the armor and

  1600. fight.

  1601. Let me pray.

1602. God, thank you so much

  1603. for your word.

1604. Thank you for making us

1605. aware of things that we

  1606. will generally not think

  1607. about.

1608. God, we are sobered by the

  1609. reality of a spiritual

1610. conflict going all around us

1611. and even aimed at us.

1612. But we take courage in

  1613. knowing that Jesus, our

1614. King, reigns over it all

1615. and is working his will for

  1616. our good.

1617. God, I pray that you would

  1618. strengthen us, that you

1619. would protect us, that you

1620. would unite us, that you

  1621. would make us wise.

1622. We are not ignorant to his

  1623. designs.

  1624. designs.

1625. And so, God, we pray for the

1626. power and the wisdom to walk

1627. in a manner worthy of the

1628. calling of which you called

1629. us as a church armed for the

  1630. glory of Christ.

  1631. Amen.

  1632. Amen.

  1633. Amen.

  1634. Thank you.
