  1. Would you turn in your Bibles to Ephesians 6?

  2. I'm going to start in v. 10 and read through v. 17.

  3. God, would you bless your people as we read your Word.

  4. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

  5. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

  6. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,

  7. against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,

  8. against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

  9. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.

  10. And having done all, to stand firm.

  11. Stand, therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth,

  12. and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

  13. and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

  14. In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.

  15. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  16. Amen.

  17. Tomorrow morning, you wake up.

  18. And you wake up to sounds of skirmishing going on outside your house or your apartment.

  19. So as you get out of bed, you reach on your nightstand for your binoculars.

  20. You're not a peeping Tom!

  21. These binoculars have scriptural lenses that enable you to see the unseen spiritual world.

  22. And as you bring these binoculars up to your eyes and you're gazing out at your neighborhood,

  23. what captures your attention is something flipping down on the ground.

  24. The rest of this thing is behind a building, so you can't see it.

  25. But as you focus in, it's the flipping of a lion tail.

  26. And you call to your mind 1 Peter 5.8.

  27. Our enemy, the devil, prowls around like a lion seeking for someone to devour.

  28. And you wonder, does anybody else know what lurks?

  29. Does anybody else know of this lion?

  30. Sobered up, you put your binoculars down.

  31. As you turn away from your window to get ready for your day,

  32. there in front of you is a seven foot chest.

  33. It's got two five foot doors that will open towards you.

  34. Inlaid on each door, there's a word.

  35. Stand firm.

  36. Stand firm.

  37. Stand firm.

  38. Stand firm.

  39. This arm wore.

  40. It takes up your whole room.

  41. As you run your hand across the wood of that chest,

  42. your spirit rises.

  43. This is no ordinary wood.

  44. This is wood that has come from a tree called Calvary.

  45. Simply touching the wood invigorates your inner man.

  46. The armor is not elaborate, but the craftsmanship is unrivaled.

  47. The top molding of this chest takes the form of a crown.

  48. And like a crown, the outer wings of the molding, they expand beyond the armor itself.

  49. And the tips of this crown from the tops, it tapers down and into the centerpiece.

  50. And the centerpiece itself is a cross that is a foot high.

  51. A replica.

  52. A replica of the cross from which this wood was harvested.

  53. The contents of this chest, of this armor, you know, are from another country.

  54. From a distant land.

  55. Your homeland.

  56. This chest was given to you the day you became a citizen of heaven.

  57. You used to follow the course of the world.

  58. The prince of the power there.

  59. The evil one.

  60. Living for your passions of your flesh.

  61. But that all changed when God gave you ears to ears here in eyes to see.

  62. Three years ago, your king came for you.

  63. He delivered you.

  64. He delivered you from the domain of darkness.

  65. And brought you into the kingdom of the beloved son Jesus in whom you have redemption.

  66. The forgiveness of your sins.

  67. And oh, you long to see him.

  68. Face to face.

  69. Face to face.

  70. Face to face.

  71. Face to face.

  72. Inlaid below the cross that is the centerpiece of the crown on top of this armor.

  73. Inlaid right below that, but above those two doors, is the word armor.

  74. It's a kind of inlaid brass.

  75. With a red hue.

  76. A hue that reminds you of blood.

  77. Your king's blood.

  78. Shed for you.

  79. On the cross.

  80. That has already won the victory.

  81. He triumphed over the devil and his demonic hosts.

  82. Through the cross.

  83. His cross work disarmed the rulers and authorities.

  84. Of this present darkness.

  85. Victory is assured.

  86. Victory is won.

  87. And so before you even open up these doors, you know that Christ has won the victory.

  88. Though your enemy is already defeated.

  89. He is for a time on the run.

  90. And seeking to wreak havoc.

  91. The armor in this chest.

  92. This armor.

  93. This armor was forged and formed with you in mind by God.

  94. In fact, we read in Isaiah that this armor was worn by God himself.

  95. This armor will come to you, has come to you as a complete set.

  96. Each piece works as part of the whole to protect you.

  97. The armor is designed to equip you from head to toe in order to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

  98. By and large, this armor is defensive.

  99. You know what's in there.

  100. But you stand back to look at these five foot doors.

  101. Again, you look at the inlaid bronze words.

  102. Stand firm.

  103. And as you reach to grab hold of the bronze knobs, you know what happens?

  104. Those words become ablaze.

  105. With heavenly delight.

  106. Your king delights in you opening this chest.

  107. He wants you to put this armor on.

  108. You're reminded of Ephesians 6.13.

  109. Take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.

  110. And having done all, to stand firm.

  111. As you open up the doors, you are met with a heavenly fragrance.

  112. It's the smell of crab apples in full bloom in spring.

  113. But sweeter.

  114. It's the eternal bloom of heaven meeting you.

  115. And instantly, it invigorates you.

  116. Strength, as you open those doors, are met by that fragrance.

  117. Inside the doors are inlaid more words.

  118. The strength of his might.

  119. This armor is for you.

  120. To strengthen you.

  121. To give you what you need.

  122. And there laid out, in the order you will put them on,

  123. is the belt.

  124. The breastplate.

  125. A pair of ankle-high boots that are open-toed.

  126. A large shield.

  127. And behind these, a platform with a helmet.

  128. And you can see the hilt of a sword.

  129. A sword that is living.

  130. A sword that is lethal.

  131. A sword that is legendary.

  132. All given to you.

  133. A sword that is evil.

  134. A sword that is evil.

  135. A sword that is evil.

  136. A sword that is evil.

  137. A sword that is evil.

  138. All given to you.

  139. So that you would be strengthened.

  140. To stand firm against the devil.

  141. With the doors open, you reach in and you pull out this belt.

  142. You take hold of it.

  143. Verse 14.

  144. This belt of truth is the belt which is truth.

  145. It represents truth.

  146. Truth is reality.

  147. The truth of a matter is the reality of a matter.

  148. The way things really are.

  149. And in the book of Ephesians, we've already encountered this word truth.

  150. In Ephesians 4.21, we read that the truth is in Jesus.

  151. And we all know what Jesus said in John 14.6, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  152. No one comes to the Father but through me.

  153. When you became a Christian, you were brought into the true reality of life.

  154. The way things really are.

  155. And this is essential and fundamental to our living now.

  156. It's the first thing that we put on.

  157. A Roman legionnaire or a Roman soldier would put on this belt, which was more like a leather apron.

  158. It would be the first thing that he would put on.

  159. It would protect his waist and upper thighs.

  160. And it would be the thing that he would attach his sword to on the right side.

  161. We'll come back to the sword.

  162. But as he would buckle his belt, this belt around his waist, he would feel the leather tighten around him.

  163. Giving him a sense of strength.

  164. Of confidence.

  165. You know that phrase, gird up your loins?

  166. That's a great phrase for what's happening here.

  167. Gird up your loins.

  168. Strengthen yourself with the belt of truth.

  169. The first thing that we must do as Christians is to strengthen ourselves with the truth that is found in Christ Jesus.

  170. Gird up your loins.

  171. So here it is.

  172. Here's the truth that you must tighten around your waist as the first thing every day.

  173. Here it is.

  174. Jesus Christ is of first importance.

  175. That's the truth of the matter.

  176. Jesus Christ is of first importance.

  177. It's all about him.

  178. Jesus really is God incarnate.

  179. Born of a virgin.

  180. He really lived a sinless life.

  181. He really died as a substitute for sinners.

  182. He was really raised from the dead.

  183. Triumphing over sin, death, and the devil.

  184. It's true.

  185. It's true that he's at the right hand of God now.

  186. Interceding for all of us at this moment.

  187. It's also true that he's waiting for a word from his father.

  188. The word go.

  189. And when he hears that word go, he's coming back.

  190. And he will make all things right.

  191. It will be a final and very public judgment for justice to be made known.

  192. It's all true.

  193. God really does have a plan for the fullness of time to unite all things in Christ.

  194. It's of first importance.

  195. And that's why Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15,

  196. For I deliver to you as of first importance what I also receive.

  197. That Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.

  198. That Christ was buried.

  199. That Christ was raised from the dead on the third day in accordance with Scriptures.

  200. You see, in the Apostle Paul's mind,

  201. it's all about Christ.

  202. He is of first importance.

  203. Which makes us realize this.

  204. Eternity is real.

  205. Hell is real.

  206. Heaven is real.

  207. The judgment to come is real.

  208. And so we tighten this belt of truth around our waist.

  209. It's all about Christ.

  210. It's the first thing that we put on.

  211. It steals you for the fight.

  212. It reminds you over and over again of why we must stand firm.

  213. Because it's all about Jesus.

  214. It's about His fame.

  215. His glory.

  216. By putting on this belt of truth,

  217. you guard yourself from the subtle lies of the enemy

  218. that seek to distract you from that which is of first importance.

  219. If you're not reminding yourself regularly that Christ is first,

  220. it's all about Him.

  221. It's just a matter of time before something other than Christ

  222. becomes that for which you live for.

  223. Have you lost sight of Jesus?

  224. Have you forgot that He's first importance?

  225. That it's all about Him?

  226. Well, how do you put this belt of truth on?

  227. Well, what you do is you regularly renew your mind with God's Word.

  228. The Bible reveals truth.

  229. It's all about Christ.

  230. He's of first importance.

  231. Him we proclaim, Paul says.

  232. For me to live is Christ, Paul says.

  233. And He died for all that those who live might no longer live for themselves,

  234. but for Him who for their sake was raised, Paul says.

  235. So the truth of the matter is that it's all about Christ.

  236. That's the belt we put on first.

  237. Buckle that on every day.

  238. Having buckled on the belt,

  239. we reach back in

  240. and our hands grab hold of a breastplate.

  241. Armor.

  242. It's the breastplate which is righteousness.

  243. For a Roman soldier,

  244. the breastplate was an essential piece of armor.

  245. It protected his vital organs.

  246. Lungs, kidneys, liver.

  247. Of course, his heart.

  248. A soldier would be foolish

  249. not to wear the breastplate into battle.

  250. And what Paul is saying here

  251. is that there is a righteousness

  252. that Christians put on

  253. that functions like a protective breastplate

  254. against the schemes of the devil.

  255. The righteousness that we are to put on

  256. is not our own righteousness.

  257. But the righteousness of Christ.

  258. Now, I know that the word righteousness

  259. is a church word.

  260. Think of righteousness as being

  261. in right standing with God.

  262. being fully accepted by God.

  263. When a sinner believes in Christ,

  264. God makes that sinner righteous

  265. in His sight.

  266. He justifies them.

  267. And so what Paul is telling us here is this.

  268. We are to regularly renew our minds

  269. with the truth of our own justification.

  270. that God has made us righteous

  271. in His sight.

  272. When a sinner believes in Christ

  273. for the very first time,

  274. God does two amazing things simultaneously.

  275. So a sinner hears the gospel,

  276. they respond by faith,

  277. and then God responds to their saving faith.

  278. And here's what God does.

  279. God takes the sinner's sin,

  280. the guilt and condemnation for it,

  281. and He takes it and places it on Christ.

  282. The fancy word is to impute.

  283. He imputes our sin on Christ.

  284. And then, God pours out

  285. all of His wrath

  286. for our sin on Christ.

  287. pours it out

  288. till there is no more.

  289. Until it's all paid for.

  290. Do you know what the result of this is?

  291. Here's the result.

  292. Full and complete forgiveness

  293. of all sin,

  294. past, present, and future.

  295. That's the result.

  296. That's why Paul writes in Romans 1,

  297. there is therefore now no condemnation

  298. for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  299. those who have been justified.

  300. Why?

  301. Because Christ was condemned

  302. and bore the wrath for them.

  303. But this is only

  304. half of justification

  305. that we've been forgiven.

  306. Here's the other half.

  307. As our sin was imputed to Christ,

  308. and God poured out His wrath on it,

  309. Christ's righteousness

  310. is imputed to us,

  311. and God pours out His affection

  312. on us forever.

  313. Jesus lived a sinless life

  314. fully pleasing to God His Father.

  315. Remember at His baptism,

  316. the words,

  317. Oh, this is my beloved Son

  318. with whom I am well pleased.

  319. What God does

  320. the moment a sinner believes

  321. is He takes the 33 years

  322. of Christ's perfect obedience.

  323. Something we could never do.

  324. And He imputes that obedience,

  325. that rightness to us.

  326. So not only does God

  327. pour out His wrath on Christ

  328. for our sin,

  329. for giving us everything,

  330. He imputes Christ's righteousness to us,

  331. making us pleasing in His sight

  332. because we're in Christ

  333. and then in Ephesians 2,

  334. He's able to pour out on us

  335. for the ages to come

  336. the immeasurable riches

  337. that are ours in Christ Jesus.

  338. It's amazing, isn't it?

  339. That's your breastplate.

  340. Justification is your breastplate.

  341. One of the tactics of the devil

  342. is to assault Christians

  343. by causing them,

  344. tempting them to doubt

  345. their justification.

  346. To doubt God's Word

  347. that they are in fact

  348. completely forgiven

  349. and fully accepted

  350. in God's sight

  351. because of what Christ

  352. has done for them.

  353. The devil wants to undermine

  354. our confidence

  355. in the peace

  356. that Christ purchased

  357. for us through His blood.

  358. The devil really doesn't want us

  359. thinking about Romans 5.1.

  360. Therefore, since we have been

  361. justified by faith,

  362. we have peace with God

  363. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  364. The devil really doesn't want us

  365. thinking about Romans 8.1.

  366. There is therefore now

  367. no condemnation

  368. for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  369. those who have been justified

  370. by God.

  371. You see,

  372. believing God's Word

  373. that we are justified

  374. by His grace,

  375. believing that is vital.

  376. It's vital to our spiritual health.

  377. It's essential to our spiritual well-being

  378. as a Christian

  379. and it is critical

  380. in the spiritual fight

  381. at hand.

  382. It's a prime target of the enemy.

  383. One of His tactics as well

  384. is to keep us focused on our sin,

  385. rather focused on our Savior.

  386. The Savior who died for our sin.

  387. The Savior whose righteousness

  388. we received

  389. was imputed to us.

  390. You know what?

  391. Maybe you're one of these Christians.

  392. There are a lot of Christians

  393. who,

  394. though justified by grace,

  395. they are completely forgiven

  396. and fully accepted.

  397. That's true of them.

  398. So even that being the case,

  399. they still live in fear

  400. of a condemnation

  401. that will never happen.

  402. Because Christ already bore it all.

  403. The devil is playing a game.

  404. He's trying to keep you

  405. from living in the fullness

  406. of what Christ has done for you.

  407. So what you do is

  408. you put on the breastplate

  409. which is the righteousness of Christ

  410. and you stand against

  411. the schemes of the devil.

  412. So,

  413. when the accuser

  414. whispers in your ear,

  415. sinner,

  416. or he raises something like this,

  417. I haven't forgotten

  418. what you did 10 years ago.

  419. You call yourself Christian.

  420. only if your church needs

  421. guilty.

  422. You're guilty.

  423. Anybody know that

  424. line of lies?

  425. Here's how you respond

  426. with the breastplate

  427. of Christ's righteousness.

  428. You know, there's no denying.

  429. No denying what I did

  430. 10 years ago was sin.

  431. I'm not denying that.

  432. But that sin,

  433. along with all my other sin,

  434. was paid in full

  435. by my Savior

  436. on the cross.

  437. And He crushed your head too.

  438. His righteousness

  439. has been imputed to me

  440. and that will never,

  441. ever be revoked.

  442. Though some of your accusations

  443. may be true,

  444. they no longer stick

  445. because I'm no longer

  446. condemned.

  447. That's the breastplate

  448. of Christ's righteousness.

  449. Strap that on.

  450. Walk through your day.

  451. With that on,

  452. you reach back into

  453. the Gospel armor.

  454. And the next piece of armor

  455. is actually footwear.

  456. Verse 15.

  457. Sandals.

  458. Which provide a kind

  459. of readiness.

  460. Footwear that makes you

  461. ready to stand firm

  462. against demonic assaults.

  463. What Paul is referring to

  464. is the half boot

  465. of a Roman soldier

  466. that was open-toed,

  467. but that would have had

  468. leather straps

  469. that soldiers would wrap

  470. around their ankles

  471. and tie tightly

  472. just below the calf.

  473. For us,

  474. it would be basically

  475. first century high tops.

  476. That's what they would be.

  477. With open toes

  478. so you can get a pedicure

  479. if you wanted to.

  480. That kind of a thing.

  481. I don't think Roman soldiers

  482. got pedicures,

  483. but I don't know.

  484. Furthermore,

  485. these sandals

  486. had studded souls

  487. for traction.

  488. They could dig in.

  489. They were like

  490. first century high top

  491. cleats.

  492. It's a picture of stability.

  493. Being able to hold

  494. one's ground

  495. when opposed.

  496. The idea is

  497. to have your feet

  498. firmly planted

  499. to be unmovable.

  500. And notice,

  501. it's the gospel of peace

  502. that makes us

  503. unmovable.

  504. In verse 15,

  505. we stand our ground

  506. against the devil

  507. because we are

  508. at peace with God.

  509. That's the rationale.

  510. We are firmly grounded

  511. by the gospel

  512. of Jesus Christ.

  513. So here's how it works.

  514. let me put it

  515. in the form

  516. of a question.

  517. If I'm at peace

  518. with God,

  519. a peace that He purchased

  520. through the blood

  521. of His Son,

  522. if I'm at peace

  523. with God,

  524. what can anyone

  525. or anything

  526. do to me?

  527. Nothing can undercut me.

  528. Nothing can undercut

  529. that peace.

  530. peace.

  531. It was acquired

  532. by my Savior.

  533. Romans 8, 30-32,

  534. and those whom God

  535. predestined,

  536. God also called.

  537. And those whom God

  538. called,

  539. God also justified,

  540. made peace with them.

  541. And those whom God

  542. justified,

  543. He also glorified.

  544. What then shall we say

  545. to these things?

  546. If God is for us,

  547. who can be against us?

  548. He who did not spare

  549. His own Son,

  550. but gave Him up

  551. for us all,

  552. how will He not also

  553. along with Him

  554. graciously give us

  555. all things?

  556. There is nothing,

  557. nothing that can separate us

  558. from the love of God

  559. in Christ Jesus,

  560. which means there's nothing

  561. that the devil

  562. can throw at us

  563. that is able

  564. to undercut

  565. our peace with God.

  566. our footing is sure.

  567. We've got gospel traction.

  568. We stand firm.

  569. We're unmovable in Christ.

  570. Now, I think it's a bit ironic,

  571. don't you,

  572. that what makes us ready

  573. for war against the devil

  574. is being at peace with God.

  575. Don't you find that

  576. a bit ironic?

  577. But being at peace with God

  578. means no human

  579. or superhuman being

  580. can undermine it.

  581. this peace was secured

  582. by Christ Himself.

  583. Dig in.

  584. Well, we've strapped on

  585. our sandals.

  586. We reach into the chest

  587. once more

  588. and our hands feel

  589. a big old,

  590. big old shield.

  591. The shield of faith.

  592. Verse 16.

  593. We're to take up

  594. this shield of faith

  595. in all circumstances.

  596. It's the shield

  597. which is faith.

  598. It's our exercising

  599. of faith

  600. in God

  601. and in His Word.

  602. Now, when you hear

  603. the word shield,

  604. don't think Captain America.

  605. Don't think circular shield

  606. that he throws.

  607. That one,

  608. it's cool,

  609. but that's what Paul

  610. has in mind.

  611. The shield Paul

  612. is writing about

  613. was a large

  614. rectangular shield

  615. that was

  616. four feet tall,

  617. two and a half feet wide.

  618. It would have

  619. two layers of wood

  620. glued together.

  621. Over that would be laid

  622. a layer of canvas.

  623. Over that would be layered

  624. a layer of calf skin.

  625. And then it would be bound

  626. by iron on the top

  627. and iron on the bottom.

  628. So it weighed something.

  629. It was big.

  630. You might be asking,

  631. why was it so big?

  632. Why did it have

  633. canvas and calf skin on it?

  634. It was that big

  635. in order to protect

  636. the whole body

  637. of a Roman soldier.

  638. And it had canvas

  639. and calf skin on it

  640. in order to extinguish

  641. flaming arrows

  642. being launched in.

  643. You see,

  644. at that time in history,

  645. people, enemies,

  646. would shoot in flaming arrows

  647. into legions of armies.

  648. And so what these soldiers

  649. would do,

  650. they dip their shield

  651. in water

  652. before a battle

  653. and pull it out.

  654. And so that shield

  655. would not only

  656. intercept an arrow,

  657. it would extinguish

  658. an arrow.

  659. And in verse 16,

  660. we read that our enemy

  661. is launching

  662. fiery arrows

  663. into us.

  664. The evil one

  665. is not only seeking

  666. to pierce us,

  667. but to start fires

  668. among us.

  669. Now there are a lot

  670. of applications

  671. for the shield of faith.

  672. We can go a lot

  673. of different ways with it.

  674. I want to go one way

  675. in particular.

  676. The shield,

  677. which is faith in God

  678. and His Word,

  679. is not only for our

  680. personal well-being

  681. as individual Christians,

  682. it's for our well-being

  683. as a church.

  684. The evil one

  685. is seeking to distract

  686. and divide us

  687. by starting fires

  688. among us.

  689. You see,

  690. what would happen

  691. back in the day

  692. is volleys of firing

  693. arrows would be

  694. launched in,

  695. and now,

  696. the army on the

  697. other side of that

  698. would have to

  699. extinguish fires.

  700. It would send armies

  701. into a fright.

  702. And it would provide

  703. vulnerabilities and

  704. opportunities

  705. for further devastation.

  706. The evil one

  707. is seeking to distract

  708. and divide us

  709. by starting fires

  710. among us.

  711. I don't have

  712. particular fires

  713. in mind,

  714. but I know

  715. it's a tactic.

  716. Our faith

  717. in God

  718. and His Word

  719. intercepts

  720. and extinguishes

  721. the devil's

  722. flaming arrows

  723. that are intended

  724. to divide us.

  725. One of the greatest

  726. temptations the devil

  727. will use to divide us

  728. is by

  729. inflaming

  730. our bruised

  731. pride,

  732. taking advantage

  733. of hurt feelings

  734. when your ideas

  735. or suggestions

  736. are not taken

  737. seriously

  738. or not acted

  739. upon.

  740. The devil is

  741. seeking to exploit

  742. disagreements

  743. among us.

  744. He's looking to

  745. exploit perceived

  746. wrongs or even

  747. exploit when we

  748. really do sin

  749. against each other.

  750. The evil one

  751. is aiming his

  752. flaming arrows

  753. of division

  754. into gaps

  755. among us

  756. formed when we

  757. hurt each other.

  758. these gaps

  759. are real

  760. and they are

  761. prime targets.

  762. That's why

  763. in Ephesians 4

  764. 26-27

  765. Paul says

  766. don't sin

  767. in your anger.

  768. Don't let the sun

  769. go down on it.

  770. Don't give the devil

  771. an opportunity.

  772. Don't give him

  773. a gap

  774. to shoot into.

  775. So here's what

  776. we must do.

  777. We must exercise

  778. faith in God's Word

  779. when we've been

  780. wronged

  781. or when we've

  782. wronged another

  783. or when we become

  784. aware of strain

  785. between brothers

  786. or sisters.

  787. When there's hurt

  788. among us

  789. not only do we

  790. help the one

  791. hurting we must

  792. protect the rest

  793. of us from that

  794. hurt becoming

  795. exploited by our

  796. enemy.

  797. Do you get it?

  798. Do you get it?

  799. So here's how we

  800. wield the shield

  801. of faith

  802. from a divisive

  803. attack

  804. from the evil

  805. one.

  806. Remember

  807. Ephesians 4

  808. 1-6

  809. remember

  810. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  811. chapter 2

  812. 3-5

  813. remember

  814. Psalm

  815. 1-33

  816. remember

  817. call to mind

  818. John 17

  819. all these passages

  820. about unity

  821. about unity

  822. about this unity

  823. that Jesus has

  824. purchased us

  825. with his blood

  826. he's made us

  827. one body

  828. and we are

  829. to work hard

  830. at preserving

  831. the peace

  832. work hard

  833. at being

  834. unified

  835. flaming arrows

  836. have the potential

  837. of igniting

  838. people's pride

  839. and so

  840. these

  841. passages

  842. shield us

  843. from our own

  844. pride

  845. they help us

  846. to walk

  847. humbly

  848. to die

  849. to ourselves

  850. and look

  851. to others

  852. best

  853. in order

  854. to preserve

  855. the unity

  856. purchased

  857. by Christ

  858. there's one

  859. other application

  860. with the shield

  861. of faith

  862. that I want

  863. to call

  864. your attention

  865. to

  866. it's this

  867. did you notice

  868. that we're

  869. to take up

  870. the shield

  871. of faith

  872. in all

  873. circumstances

  874. that means

  875. we're to be

  876. ready with

  877. the shield

  878. of faith

  879. on our

  880. day off

  881. during

  882. vacations

  883. during our

  884. downtime

  885. watching tv

  886. surfing the

  887. internet

  888. we must

  889. be vigilant

  890. at all

  891. times

  892. in all

  893. circumstances

  894. exercising

  895. faith

  896. well we got

  897. the shield

  898. of faith

  899. on

  900. let's reach

  901. back in

  902. verse 17

  903. the helmet

  904. of salvation

  905. the helmet

  906. which is

  907. salvation

  908. okay

  909. in a battle

  910. your head

  911. is a prime

  912. target

  913. yes

  914. yes

  915. and the devil

  916. would love

  917. to get in

  918. your head

  919. not literally

  920. but like to

  921. mess with

  922. your head

  923. and what he'd

  924. really like to

  925. mess with

  926. is your

  927. identity

  928. who you

  929. are

  930. what you

  931. believe about

  932. yourself

  933. is critical

  934. in this

  935. fight

  936. what you are

  937. to put on

  938. your head

  939. is the helmet

  940. which is

  941. salvation

  942. in other words

  943. you are to

  944. regularly call

  945. the mind

  946. who you are

  947. that you are

  948. saved

  949. you've been

  950. rescued

  951. from the domain

  952. of darkness

  953. transferred to the kingdom

  954. of light

  955. you were dead

  956. now you're alive

  957. you are a saint

  958. of the living

  959. God

  960. the enemy

  961. doesn't want you

  962. to remember

  963. your true identity

  964. a sinner

  965. saved by grace

  966. he doesn't want

  967. you to recall

  968. that not only

  969. did God save you

  970. from something

  971. sin

  972. he saved you

  973. for something

  974. himself

  975. you're a holy

  976. one

  977. a saint

  978. saved

  979. when you put

  980. this helmet

  981. on

  982. it speaks

  983. to you

  984. it says

  985. you are mine

  986. and you know

  987. what we want

  988. to say back

  989. Psalm 119

  990. 94

  991. I am yours

  992. I am yours

  993. you put that

  994. helmet on

  995. and you say

  996. I am yours

  997. I am yours

  998. it's a tremendous

  999. sense of assurance

  1000. we've seen

  1001. now the helmet

  1002. and now we reach

  1003. into this chest

  1004. for the last

  1005. piece of

  1006. armor

  1007. which is the sword

  1008. the word of God

  1009. the last piece

  1010. of armor

  1011. is the sword

  1012. of the spirit

  1013. it's an 18 inch

  1014. blade

  1015. that Roman

  1016. ligoniers

  1017. would wear

  1018. on the right

  1019. side

  1020. and it was

  1021. specifically

  1022. designed for

  1023. close hand

  1024. to hand

  1025. combat

  1026. did you notice

  1027. it's the sword

  1028. of the spirit

  1029. it originates

  1030. in the mind

  1031. of God

  1032. it's the bible

  1033. the word

  1034. of God

  1035. every word

  1036. of this book

  1037. originated

  1038. in the mind

  1039. of God

  1040. the Holy Spirit

  1041. moved men

  1042. in such a way

  1043. that they penned

  1044. what God

  1045. intended

  1046. not one word

  1047. more

  1048. not one word

  1049. less

  1050. this is his

  1051. book of life

  1052. for us

  1053. it's the sword

  1054. of the spirit

  1055. and it's living

  1056. Hebrews 4

  1057. 12

  1058. it's lethal

  1059. 2nd Corinthians

  1060. 10

  1061. it destroys

  1062. strongholds

  1063. and it's legendary

  1064. we see it

  1065. operating

  1066. in Matthew 4

  1067. Jesus

  1068. swinging the sword

  1069. of the spirit

  1070. when he was

  1071. tempted by the devil

  1072. himself

  1073. three times

  1074. three times

  1075. Jesus responds

  1076. with God's word

  1077. and in the final

  1078. temptation

  1079. the devil

  1080. makes an attempt

  1081. offers Jesus

  1082. the kingdoms

  1083. of the world

  1084. only if Jesus

  1085. would fall down

  1086. at his feet

  1087. and Jesus

  1088. is like

  1089. I've had

  1090. enough

  1091. of this

  1092. Jesus

  1093. says

  1094. be gone

  1095. Satan

  1096. be gone

  1097. you shall

  1098. worship

  1099. the Lord

  1100. your God

  1101. and him

  1102. only

  1103. shall you

  1104. serve

  1105. and you

  1106. remember

  1107. what the

  1108. devil

  1109. did

  1110. he left

  1111. Jesus

  1112. exercised

  1113. his authority

  1114. to which

  1115. the devil

  1116. obeyed

  1117. we share

  1118. in Christ's

  1119. authority

  1120. we can say

  1121. be gone

  1122. Satan

  1123. and he

  1124. leaves

  1125. in Martin

  1126. Luther's

  1127. a mighty

  1128. fortress

  1129. is our

  1130. God

  1131. he says

  1132. one little

  1133. word

  1134. shall fell

  1135. him

  1136. you know

  1137. that Martin

  1138. Luther was

  1139. asked

  1140. what is

  1141. that little

  1142. word

  1143. you know

  1144. what he

  1145. said

  1146. one might

  1147. think

  1148. Jesus

  1149. but that's

  1150. not how

  1151. Martin Luther

  1152. responded

  1153. he said

  1154. liar

  1155. as in

  1156. John 8

  1157. 44

  1158. liar

  1159. be gone

  1160. liar

  1161. be gone

  1162. when you

  1163. feel tempted

  1164. you are

  1165. free

  1166. and authorized

  1167. by God's

  1168. word

  1169. to say

  1170. liar

  1171. be gone

  1172. it's

  1173. Christ's

  1174. authority

  1175. so here

  1176. we are

  1177. in front

  1178. of now

  1179. an empty

  1180. chest

  1181. we've been

  1182. outfitted

  1183. from head

  1184. to toe

  1185. in order

  1186. to stand

  1187. firm

  1188. against the

  1189. schemes

  1190. of a

  1191. devil

  1192. these six

  1193. pieces of

  1194. armor were

  1195. given to you

  1196. by God

  1197. so that you

  1198. could stand

  1199. firm

  1200. there's

  1201. still the

  1202. smell of

  1203. blossoming

  1204. crab apples

  1205. in the air

  1206. you look at

  1207. the doors

  1208. the strength

  1209. of his

  1210. might

  1211. and you've

  1212. been strengthened

  1213. you've taken

  1214. to heart

  1215. each piece

  1216. it's all

  1217. about Christ

  1218. that's your

  1219. belt

  1220. you've been

  1221. imputed with the

  1222. righteousness of

  1223. Christ

  1224. that is your

  1225. breastplate

  1226. you're immovable

  1227. with the peace

  1228. of God

  1229. your sandals

  1230. God's word

  1231. repels

  1232. every

  1233. flaming

  1234. missile

  1235. that's your

  1236. shield

  1237. of faith

  1238. I am yours

  1239. is the

  1240. helmet

  1241. on your

  1242. head

  1243. and God's

  1244. word

  1245. living

  1246. lethal

  1247. legendary

  1248. that sends

  1249. the devil

  1250. fleeing

  1251. as you

  1252. close the

  1253. doors

  1254. those two

  1255. words

  1256. are still

  1257. blazing

  1258. stand

  1259. firm

  1260. God's

  1261. given you

  1262. what you

  1263. need

  1264. for in a
