  1. Let's pray.

  2. Father God, we're very aware of the silence in our city right now,

  3. the silence of worship and praise of your name.

  4. You have people in this city that are singing your praises right now,

  5. that love you, that are seeking to lift your name higher and higher and higher.

  6. But God, we believe you've placed us here as a church

  7. so that more and more and more people will sing your name higher, higher and higher.

  8. God, we believe that there are people in our city that are perishing

  9. who await to hear the Gospel message.

  10. And when they hear, Lord, we believe that they will repent.

  11. And they will repent unto you and that they will believe in you

  12. and that, God, you will relent of them.

  13. You will turn your fierce wrath away from them

  14. and turn your wrath onto Christ for them.

  15. God, I pray that you would impress upon us, your people, this morning

  16. that we are here sent by you with a message you've given us

  17. to speak to a people that are perishing.

  18. We used to be numbered among them.

  19. God, would you make us your ambassadors to the city of Kenosha?

  20. And God, our prayer is something big and it's something beyond us.

  21. We can't conjure up what we're about to ask.

  22. We know that only you can.

  23. God, if you are able to bring about the repentance of 120,000 people

  24. in the 8th century B.C.

  25. through just five words of a Hebrew prophet,

  26. God, you certainly can bring about a revival in the city of Kenosha

  27. in the 21st century A.D.

  28. when we proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  29. So God, would you by your Spirit,

  30. would you please make your appeal through us

  31. to those who are perishing.

  32. God, help us to say with all boldness and love,

  33. you're going the wrong way.

  34. God, would you do a work in our city?

  35. God, we want you to add to our number.

  36. Not for number's sake,

  37. but so that more people would be saved.

  38. And more people would be able to say

  39. salvation belongs to the Lord.

  40. That more people would know the sweetness

  41. of sins forgiven.

  42. Of righteousness imputed.

  43. Of a confidence that

  44. you're for us forever.

  45. Forever.

  46. God, would you do a work in us?

  47. Would you move the needle in us?

  48. Would you move us from being unwilling and silent

  49. to being willing and vocal?

  50. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  51. Amen.

  52. Amen.

  53. Amen.

  54. Well, before I start preaching,

  55. I want to introduce to you all a couple.

  56. Josh and Christy Anderson.

  57. They're sitting right here.

  58. Josh and Christy,

  59. will you please stand up?

  60. Josh and Christy are missionaries

  61. and they will be going in just a little bit

  62. to a big country in East Asia.

  63. And we have the privilege of a church

  64. as joining them,

  65. as ministry partners,

  66. and sending them.

  67. And so they'll be joining us

  68. for the next few weeks

  69. before they leave.

  70. And in July,

  71. they're going to share a little bit more

  72. about what God is calling them to.

  73. But I want you to see them

  74. and meet them.

  75. They're going to be in our midst

  76. for a little bit this summer.

  77. Josh and Christy,

  78. thank you for being here.

  79. You are so welcome here.

  80. Now, if you would open up your Bibles,

  81. if you haven't already,

  82. to Jonah chapter 3.

    Jonah 3 chapter mention

  83. I'll get there myself.

  84. Do you know,

  85. outside this building

  86. and around Library Square

  87. is a one-way street.

  88. And it's like clockwork.

  89. Every week,

  90. at least one person

  91. is going the wrong way

  92. on this street.

  93. And there's not unusual,

  94. I'm running out of the building,

  95. you're going the wrong way.

  96. Yesterday,

  97. I'm on my way to the building.

  98. This is early Saturday morning

  99. and I'd stop to get my chocolate milk

  100. at South Court Pantry,

  101. coming in on 7th Avenue.

  102. And I'm taking the corner around there

  103. by M&I Bank,

  104. BMI, excuse me.

  105. And there's a dark SUV

  106. going the wrong way.

  107. So I slow down,

  108. roll down my window

  109. and I see this couple

  110. in the front seat

  111. and I can tell

  112. they're already kind of like,

  113. oh no.

  114. I'm like,

  115. you do know that you're going

  116. the wrong way

  117. on a one-way street,

  118. don't you?

  119. And they were like,

  120. oh yeah,

  121. we figured it out.

  122. And so as I drove away,

  123. I looked in my rearview mirror

  124. and you know what I saw?

  125. I saw that SUV turning around.

  126. It started going the right way.

  127. Salvation is a one-way street

  128. called Jesus.

  129. And for those yet to be saved,

  130. those who are perishing,

  131. they're going the wrong way.

  132. They're on a path of destruction.

  133. And so this morning,

  134. what we're going to see

  135. from Jonah 3 is,

  136. God has put us here

  137. to tell people

  138. that they're going the wrong way

  139. so that they would turn around,

  140. that they would trust in Jesus,

  141. and that they would experience

  142. what we've experienced,

  143. deliverance,

  144. and welcome into the family of God.

  145. This morning in Jonah 3,

  146. we'll see how God used

  147. this reluctant prophet

  148. to speak His message

  149. to these Ninevite sinners

  150. who repent.

  151. It's amazing.

  152. They repent.

  153. And God turns from His great anger.

  154. He relents.

  155. When sinners repent,

  156. God relents.

  157. When sinners repent,

  158. when they hear the message of God

  159. and they believe,

  160. they repent,

  161. God relents.

  162. So this morning in Jonah 3,

  163. we're going to see three moves.

  164. Jonah is resent.

  165. That's chapter 3, 1-3.

  166. We're going to see Nineveh repent.

  167. That's verses 4-9.

  168. And then we'll see God relent

  169. in verse 10.

  170. God relents

  171. when a sinner repents

  172. after believing the Gospel

  173. from lips of those God has sent.

  174. So let's look at

  175. this first little snapshot

  176. when Jonah is resent.

  177. In chapter 3, verse 1,

  178. we read,

  179. Then the word of the Lord

  180. came to Jonah.

  181. That's the identical words

  182. of chapter 1, verse 1,

  183. with the exception of one thing.

  184. So he says,

  185. The word of the Lord

  186. came to Jonah the second time.

  187. Instead of saying,

  188. The word of the Lord

  189. came to Jonah,

  190. son of Amittai,

  191. he says,

  192. The word of the Lord

  193. came to Jonah a second time.

  194. You see,

  195. the first time,

  196. Jonah wasn't ready.

  197. God knew it.

  198. Jonah hit the bricks.

  199. He went to the farthest city

  200. possible away from Nineveh.

  201. That's where he's heading.

  202. And then God caught him

  203. on that boat

  204. called the prophet catcher.

  205. Got him into the drink,

  206. and while he's in the belly

  207. of that big fish,

  208. God changed Jonah.

  209. Jonah repented.

  210. He realized that he was resisting God.

  211. And so his last great exclamation

  212. of chapter 2 is,

  213. Salvation belongs to the Lord.

  214. It's his.

  215. It's his.

  216. And so he gets spit up on a beach,

  217. presumably somewhere close to Israel,

  218. and now he's ready to be recommissioned.

  219. Jonah's been changed and sent.

  220. We have been changed and sent.

  221. We say that salvation belongs

  222. to our Lord God.

  223. And He has given us a message to proclaim.

  224. He has sent us.

  225. You know, in 2 Corinthians 5,

  226. we have this great passage

  227. about Christians being commissioned

  228. with the ministry of reconciliation.

  229. Did you know that God has entrusted us,

  230. Christ the King Church,

  231. with a ministry?

  232. It's the ministry of reconciliation.

  233. To call sinners back to God.

  234. Well, in chapter 3, verse 1 and 2,

  235. God says,

  236. Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city,

  237. and call out against it

  238. the message that I tell you.

  239. Nineveh's a great city.

  240. It's big.

  241. 120,000 people.

  242. We see that in chapter 4, verse 11,

  243. which means in that day,

  244. it was huge.

  245. It was expansive.

  246. It was a three-day journey

  247. from one side to the next.

  248. The best way to think about that is this.

  249. You know, when we talk about Chicago,

  250. we talk about Chicagoland.

  251. And when we talk about Chicagoland,

  252. not only are we talking about,

  253. we're talking about the downtown area

  254. as well as the surrounding towns and suburbs.

  255. You know, the whole Chicago metroplex.

  256. And so when the author of Jonah

  257. is talking about Nineveh,

  258. he's talking about the Nineveh metroplex.

  259. It's a big area.

  260. And so not only did it cover downtown Nineveh,

  261. it covered some towns in close proximity to Nineveh.

  262. So it was an expansive area.

  263. That's why it takes so long to cross it.

  264. It was also prominent.

  265. Nineveh was the capital of Assyria.

  266. It was the heartbeat of that nation.

  267. A nation that I told you last week

  268. or the week before was a brutal nation.

  269. Devastating.

  270. There were killers.

  271. Early terrorists.

  272. They wreaked havoc wherever they went.

  273. They wanted people to be afraid of them.

  274. This was an important city.

  275. It was an important city.

  276. But what I want you to see in verse 3

  277. is that it's important to God.

  278. The city of Nineveh is important to God.

  279. And I've got to explain,

  280. I've got to get a little technical with you

  281. to help you see it.

  282. Because you can't see it in English.

  283. If you're reading out of the NIV in verse 3,

  284. it says,

  285. Now Nineveh was a very important city.

  286. You see that if you're reading the NIV?

  287. And if you're reading the ESV,

  288. it says Nineveh was an exceedingly great city.

  289. Exceedingly great.

  290. Very important.

  291. And so you have these pile-ups of adjectives.

  292. Very, exceedingly.

  293. This is a big city.

  294. It's very important.

  295. Now if you're reading out of the ESV

  296. and you look down at the footnote,

  297. you're going to read the literal English translation

  298. of the Hebrew.

  299. It says this,

  300. Now Nineveh was a great city to God.

  301. You don't see that in English.

  302. But it's there in Hebrew.

  303. When you were listening to Lou Reed,

  304. did you hear the words that he was using

  305. to describe God?

  306. Yahweh, the personal name of God,

  307. the deliverer of God.

  308. And then he said four times that word Elohim.

  309. Do you remember him say that when he read that?

  310. Elohim is another word for God.

  311. And I learned from Samir Masu this week

  312. that at its core it means great.

  313. And so what happens here,

  314. what the English translators decided on

  315. was that this word Elohim

  316. was actually describing the city.

  317. It's like a really strong adjective.

  318. It's very exceedingly great.

  319. But there's another way to understand it.

  320. Because in chapter 3,

  321. and this is where we get a little technical,

  322. Elohim shows up four other times.

  323. The same word.

  324. And each time it's used,

  325. not as an adjective,

  326. but as a noun.

  327. About God.

  328. God himself.

  329. See that in verse 5, 8, 9, and 10.

  330. God, God, God, God, God.

  331. So why am I making a big deal about this?

  332. Here's why.

  333. Nineveh was important to God.

  334. Nineveh was important to God.

  335. He was concerned about Nineveh.

  336. Not the city.

  337. Not its botanical gardens, which it had.

  338. Not its impressive architecture,

  339. which I'm sure it had.

  340. God wasn't like,

  341. ooh, nice city.

  342. Well, God was interested

  343. as 120,000 people of the city.

  344. They were very important to him.

  345. You know, Nineveh, the Assyrians,

  346. were not God's covenant people.

  347. They were the Jews of the time.

  348. God had bound himself to the Jews,

  349. saying, I am your people,

  350. and you are mine.

  351. And so what we see happening here

  352. is that God is actually concerned

  353. about people who are outside of the covenant.

  354. And so the question is,

  355. why would God be concerned about Ninevites

  356. if they're not his covenant people?

  357. And the answer is,

  358. because he's their creator.

  359. He made them in his image.

  360. They are of intrinsic value to God.

  361. They bear his image.

  362. They are designed to worship.

  363. And they are worshiping things

  364. that are not him.

  365. It's a very important city to God.

  366. Because it is a concentrated place

  367. of worshipers who are not worshiping him.

  368. And he wants to warn them

  369. and change them.

  370. So the city of Nineveh

  371. is important to God.

  372. It is a big city.

  373. It is great.

  374. It's a great city of great importance to God.

  375. These are people

  376. that should be worshiping him,

  377. but are not.

  378. You know, the whole book of Jonah

  379. is about God's heart for all people.

  380. And so that alone

  381. helps us understand this little phrase

  382. that this city was important to God.

  383. How do we bring that home?

  384. God loves his covenant people.

  385. We are his covenant people in Christ,

  386. the new covenant people.

  387. But you know,

  388. God is more concerned

  389. about more people than just us.

  390. Did you know right now

  391. we're surrounded by 100,000 people

  392. in the city of Kenosha?

  393. And each person is important to God.

  394. Do you know why?

  395. They're an image bearer of God.

  396. That's why God

  397. is insistent

  398. upon sending Jonah to Nineveh.

  399. Nineveh is important to him.

  400. All people everywhere

  401. must someday give an account

  402. to the God of creation

  403. who's made himself known

  404. as Yahweh

  405. and Jesus Christ.

  406. All people are important to God.

  407. Every resident of Kenosha

  408. is important to God.

  409. So let me try to bring this home

  410. a little bit more

  411. in your everyday life.

  412. Do you have a neighbor?

  413. Maybe they live next door to you.

  414. Maybe this neighbor

  415. is someone you work with.

  416. Maybe this is a family member.

  417. They just rub you the wrong way.

  418. You see them and you're like,

  419. oh man.

  420. I'm going to go the other way.

  421. Did you know this neighbor

  422. is an image bearer of God

  423. and that God sees this person

  424. as important to Him?

  425. You know, there are people

  426. that have different political positions

  427. that we do.

  428. Different positions

  429. on important social issues.

  430. But you know what?

  431. Those people are image bearers of God.

  432. They're important to God.

  433. They have intrinsic worth.

  434. As God sent Jonah

  435. 2,800 years ago

  436. to the city of Nineveh,

  437. God is sending us today

  438. to the city of Kenosha

  439. because we're surrounded

  440. by image bearers

  441. important to God.

  442. What will happen?

  443. What will happen

  444. if we start to see people

  445. as God starts to see people?

  446. What will happen?

  447. We're going to start talking more.

  448. We're going to start

  449. opening our mouths.

  450. We're going to start

  451. saying things.

  452. And that's what God does

  453. in Jonah.

  454. He needed to get something

  455. done in Jonah

  456. in chapter 2

  457. so that He could send him

  458. back in Jonah 3

  459. so that He's just even

  460. willing to open up

  461. His mouth.

  462. It says nowhere

  463. He was excited

  464. to go back.

  465. But He was willing.

  466. God

  467. resends

  468. Jonah

  469. in chapter 3

  470. 1-3

  471. and in verses

  472. 4-9

  473. we see

  474. something

  475. amazing.

  476. Nineveh repents.

  477. And so what I want

  478. to help you see

  479. in this passage

  480. is the message

  481. that was proclaimed

  482. and the response

  483. of the Ninevites.

  484. And in so doing

  485. I'm going to seek

  486. to address

  487. two obstacles

  488. that we all deal with

  489. when talking to others

  490. about Jesus.

  491. Okay?

  492. So let's look

  493. at this message.

  494. It's really interesting

  495. because the author

  496. of Jonah

  497. he doesn't mess around.

  498. And so like

  499. verses 1-3

  500. presumably Jonah's

  501. in Israel

  502. being recommissioned

  503. and then in verse 4

  504. all of a sudden

  505. he's like on the

  506. outskirts

  507. of the metroplex

  508. of Nineveh.

  509. He's not wasting

  510. any time.

  511. So there he is.

  512. And the first thing

  513. I want you to see

  514. is that this message

  515. that Jonah

  516. is to preach

  517. and that he calls out

  518. yet forty days

  519. and Nineveh

  520. shall be overthrown.

  521. That's in verse 4.

  522. In Hebrew

  523. it's just five words.

  524. It's just five words.

  525. But what you need to see

  526. from the get-go here

  527. is that this message

  528. was not Jonah's message.

  529. Jonah didn't think this up.

  530. This was a message

  531. that God gave Jonah.

  532. Look back

  533. in verse 2.

  534. Arise,

  535. go to Nineveh,

  536. that great city,

  537. and call out against it

  538. the message

  539. that I tell you.

  540. God told Jonah

  541. to speak

  542. these five words.

  543. We don't know

  544. if there's any more.

  545. We know that there

  546. were these five words.

  547. This is God's message.

  548. And as Christians,

  549. God has given us

  550. a message to proclaim.

  551. His message,

  552. not ours.

  553. We proclaim the gospel.

  554. The message

  555. of reconciliation.

  556. That there is a God

  557. and He is holy and just.

  558. He created us

  559. in His image,

  560. but we have rebelled

  561. against Him.

  562. And there's a just

  563. consequence for that.

  564. But God,

  565. even knowing that,

  566. sent Christ

  567. to die in the place

  568. of sinners

  569. so that those who believe

  570. and turn

  571. will be saved.

  572. And so the call is

  573. respond in repentance

  574. and faith.

  575. Turn from your sin

  576. and turn to Christ.

  577. We've been given

  578. a message

  579. just like Jonah

  580. was given a message.

  581. And our message

  582. focuses on Jesus.

  583. The good news

  584. for those who are

  585. perishing.

  586. And what I just want

  587. to see here is that

  588. it started with God.

  589. God wants to get

  590. a message

  591. to the Ninevites

  592. and He calls

  593. and sends Jonah

  594. to do it.

  595. That's God's M.O.

  596. And that's one

  597. of the biggest reasons

  598. God has us here.

  599. Now,

  600. this message itself

  601. is just five words

  602. in Hebrew.

  603. And it's like

  604. one of the shortest

  605. messages on record

  606. and it has one

  607. of the biggest effects.

  608. Five words

  609. and 120,000 people repent.

  610. 120,000 idolaters.

  611. 120,000 evildoers.

  612. It's terrorist-like folks.

  613. They repent.

  614. I mean, seriously.

  615. It's like Jonah

  616. shows up and say,

  617. hey, Nineveh,

  618. 40 days

  619. and you're done.

  620. And they respond.

  621. God

  622. has been preparing

  623. Nineveh.

  624. 40 days

  625. and you'll be overturned.

  626. The same word

  627. overturned

  628. used of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  629. Now,

  630. for Jonah to show up

  631. and say,

  632. hey,

  633. 40 days

  634. and it's over,

  635. it's not the most

  636. tactful way,

  637. is it?

  638. not the most

  639. sensitive message.

  640. It doesn't seem like

  641. Jonah cared

  642. all that much

  643. of what it meant

  644. to be relevant

  645. to Assyrian culture.

  646. You know,

  647. next Sunday

  648. is the civic parade.

  649. I really love

  650. the Shriners

  651. flying carpets.

  652. You know what I'm talking about?

  653. Those little go-carts

  654. that are retrofitted

  655. with kind of

  656. that red carpet look

  657. and they weave

  658. in and out

  659. of each other.

  660. Well,

  661. let's just say

  662. that next Sunday

  663. we're all sitting

  664. on the side

  665. of 60th

  666. watching the Shriners

  667. come down

  668. and they pass on

  669. by us

  670. and right behind them

  671. is just this very

  672. kind of

  673. no big deal

  674. pickup truck.

  675. No fanfare.

  676. no fancy float.

  677. But on

  678. the back

  679. of that

  680. pickup truck

  681. is Jonah.

  682. And Jonah

  683. is decked out

  684. with some very

  685. simple things.

  686. He's got

  687. a generator,

  688. a microphone,

  689. and a speaker.

  690. And as he's

  691. coming down

  692. 60th,

  693. do you know

  694. what he's saying?

  695. Over and over

  696. and over again.

  697. Kenosha,

  698. 40 days

  699. and you're done.

  700. Kenosha,

  701. 40 days.

  702. It's over.

  703. 40 days

  704. and you'll be

  705. overturned,

  706. overthrown.

  707. Disaster

  708. is pending.

  709. You've got

  710. 40 days,

  711. Kenosha.

  712. If we're

  713. in the crowd,

  714. what are we

  715. thinking?

  716. Who is this guy?

  717. Is he serious?

  718. I'd be asking

  719. questions

  720. something like this.

  721. Do they let

  722. anybody into

  723. the parade?

  724. How can I

  725. get in the

  726. parade?

  727. Where are

  728. those shriners?

  729. I'd like to

  730. see them back

  731. right now.

  732. Quite a

  733. message,

  734. isn't it?

  735. Simple,

  736. clear,

  737. and

  738. confrontational.

  739. The message

  740. that Jonah

  741. proclaimed

  742. confronted

  743. the Ninevites.

  744. It confronted

  745. them.

  746. When we

  747. hear the word

  748. confrontation,

  749. if you're like

  750. me,

  751. you're kind

  752. of like,

  753. I don't

  754. like being

  755. confronted

  756. with the

  757. word

  758. confrontation.

  759. I don't

  760. like that.

  761. I don't

  762. like

  763. confrontation.

  764. The gospel

  765. message that

  766. God has

  767. entrusted to

  768. us

  769. is

  770. confrontational

  771. in its

  772. nature,

  773. in its

  774. essence.

  775. If we

  776. try to

  777. de-

  778. confrontationalize

  779. the gospel,

  780. we de-

  781. gospel

  782. the gospel.

  783. If we

  784. try to

  785. remove sin

  786. from the

  787. gospel,

  788. we no

  789. longer have

  790. a message

  791. for sinners

  792. who are

  793. perishing

  794. to be

  795. saved.

  796. we

  797. cannot

  798. de-

  799. confrontationalize

  800. this message

  801. entrusted to

  802. us.

  803. So the

  804. faithful

  805. proclamation

  806. of the

  807. gospel

  808. will

  809. confront

  810. sinners

  811. with their

  812. real sinfulness

  813. against their

  814. real holy

  815. God in

  816. order to

  817. expose their

  818. real need

  819. for a

  820. real

  821. savior.

  822. The

  823. gospel

  824. message

  825. confronts

  826. those who

  827. are perishing

  828. in their

  829. sins.

  830. It

  831. confronts

  832. them with

  833. their

  834. sinfulness

  835. to expose

  836. their need

  837. for a

  838. savior.

  839. So here's

  840. what I want

  841. to get you

  842. to this

  843. morning.

  844. To

  845. proclaim

  846. the gospel

  847. faithfully

  848. in the

  849. city of

  850. Kenosho,

  851. will run

  852. risk.

  853. And here's

  854. what the

  855. risks are.

  856. When we

  857. confront

  858. someone with

  859. the gospel

  860. of Jesus

  861. Christ,

  862. when we

  863. tell them

  864. God says

  865. you're going

  866. the wrong

  867. way.

  868. God's

  869. word says

  870. you're going

  871. the wrong

  872. way.

  873. When we

  874. confront

  875. somebody

  876. with the

  877. gospel of

  878. Jesus

  879. Christ,

  880. we run

  881. the risk

  882. of offense.

  883. Don't we?

  884. Because we

  885. say things

  886. like Jesus

  887. is the

  888. only way

  889. to heaven.

  890. He's the

  891. only one

  892. who can

  893. forgive your

  894. sins.

  895. That kind

  896. of exclusive

  897. language is

  898. offensive to

  899. people in

  900. our culture.

  901. So for us

  902. to even

  903. proclaim it,

  904. when we

  905. confront people

  906. with that,

  907. people will

  908. take offense.

  909. we run

  910. the risk

  911. of introducing

  912. strain into

  913. relationships,

  914. with

  915. relationships

  916. with people

  917. we love.

  918. I know

  919. in our

  920. family,

  921. we've had

  922. conversations

  923. with people

  924. we love,

  925. and it's

  926. been awkward.

  927. It's

  928. resulted in

  929. strain.

  930. And

  931. I think

  932. our biggest

  933. fear,

  934. the biggest

  935. obstacle we

  936. face to

  937. speaking the

  938. gospel is

  939. all out

  940. rejection,

  941. isn't it?

  942. We tell

  943. people about

  944. Jesus,

  945. we say,

  946. hey,

  947. God's word

  948. says you're

  949. going the

  950. wrong way,

  951. you need to

  952. turn to

  953. Jesus,

  954. and we

  955. get rejected

  956. for it.

  957. Like,

  958. I don't want

  959. to talk to

  960. you anymore.

  961. You're not

  962. going to hear

  963. from me,

  964. befriended,

  965. off my

  966. phone,

  967. not going to

  968. talk to you

  969. again,

  970. turn the

  971. other way.

  972. Isn't that

  973. our greatest

  974. fear?

  975. It's one of

  976. the biggest

  977. things that

  978. keeps us

  979. from telling

  980. other people

  981. about Jesus.

  982. So let's

  983. ask this

  984. question this

  985. way.

  986. Why would

  987. we risk

  988. something like

  989. that?

  990. Why would

  991. we risk

  992. offense,

  993. strain,

  994. rejection

  995. by confronting

  996. people with

  997. the gospel

  998. of Jesus?

  999. Why would

  1000. we risk

  1001. that?

  1002. Let me put

  1003. it to you

  1004. another way.

  1005. What's more

  1006. important for

  1007. our non-Christians,

  1008. friends,

  1009. and family,

  1010. and coworkers?

  1011. What's more

  1012. important?

  1013. To be at peace

  1014. with you,

  1015. or to be at

  1016. peace with

  1017. God?

  1018. What's more

  1019. important?

  1020. What's more

  1021. eternally

  1022. significant?

  1023. significant?

  1024. That we

  1025. have a

  1026. temporal

  1027. peace now,

  1028. or that

  1029. they

  1030. experience

  1031. an eternal

  1032. peace forever?

  1033. What's more

  1034. significant?

  1035. Our fear

  1036. of rejection

  1037. will keep

  1038. us from

  1039. lovingly

  1040. confronting

  1041. those who

  1042. are perishing.

  1043. It keeps

  1044. us from

  1045. speaking

  1046. words that

  1047. can result

  1048. in people

  1049. turning around

  1050. to Jesus.

  1051. If we're

  1052. more concerned

  1053. with what

  1054. people think

  1055. about us

  1056. than what

  1057. God thinks

  1058. about people,

  1059. we will

  1060. remain silent

  1061. in this

  1062. city.

  1063. and God

  1064. would not

  1065. have us

  1066. do that.

  1067. So the

  1068. question is,

  1069. how do we

  1070. get over

  1071. our fear

  1072. of rejection?

  1073. Because

  1074. if you're

  1075. not ashamed

  1076. of the

  1077. gospel,

  1078. you're going

  1079. to find

  1080. a way

  1081. to communicate

  1082. it.

  1083. How do

  1084. we get

  1085. over

  1086. the fear?

  1087. Here's how.

  1088. Here's one

  1089. way at

  1090. least.

  1091. We begin

  1092. to purposefully

  1093. concern

  1094. ourselves

  1095. more and

  1096. more with

  1097. a person

  1098. standing

  1099. before God.

  1100. More and

  1101. more we

  1102. see people

  1103. as God

  1104. sees them.

  1105. More and

  1106. more we're

  1107. like asking

  1108. the question

  1109. when we

  1110. meet somebody,

  1111. I wonder

  1112. if they're

  1113. saved.

  1114. I wonder

  1115. if they're

  1116. at peace

  1117. with God.

  1118. I wonder

  1119. if they

  1120. know the

  1121. sweetness

  1122. of deliverance

  1123. and forgiveness

  1124. of sin.

  1125. The

  1126. Apostle Paul

  1127. helps us

  1128. out in

  1129. 2 Corinthians

  1130. 5.

  1131. He says

  1132. this.

  1133. He talks

  1134. about the

  1135. love of

  1136. Christ

  1137. controlling

  1138. us,

  1139. that Christ

  1140. died for

  1141. all,

  1142. that those

  1143. who live

  1144. might no

  1145. longer live

  1146. for themselves

  1147. but for

  1148. him or

  1149. for their

  1150. sake died

  1151. and was

  1152. raised.

  1153. And then

  1154. he says

  1155. this.

  1156. Therefore

  1157. we regard

  1158. no one

  1159. according to

  1160. the flesh.

  1161. We don't

  1162. regard people

  1163. the same

  1164. way we

  1165. used to.

  1166. We don't

  1167. see them

  1168. the same

  1169. way.

  1170. God is

  1171. calling us

  1172. and helping

  1173. us to see

  1174. people as

  1175. he sees

  1176. them.

  1177. It's

  1178. image

  1179. bearers

  1180. who are

  1181. perishing

  1182. apart from

  1183. Christ.

  1184. So when it

  1185. comes to

  1186. those who

  1187. are perishing

  1188. our foremost

  1189. in controlling

  1190. concern must

  1191. be their

  1192. standing with

  1193. God, not

  1194. our standing

  1195. with them.

  1196. Our

  1197. relationships

  1198. serve

  1199. God's

  1200. gospel

  1201. purposes.

  1202. So can

  1203. we just

  1204. agree to

  1205. something?

  1206. It's

  1207. going to

  1208. cost us

  1209. something.

  1210. It's not

  1211. if there's

  1212. going to be

  1213. cost.

  1214. It's

  1215. is the

  1216. cost

  1217. worth it?

  1218. That's the

  1219. question.

  1220. We will be

  1221. rejected.

  1222. we will

  1223. experience

  1224. strain.

  1225. Things will

  1226. get awkward.

  1227. But is

  1228. sharing the

  1229. gospel with

  1230. people who

  1231. are going

  1232. the wrong

  1233. way with

  1234. the hope

  1235. that they'll

  1236. turn to

  1237. Jesus and

  1238. experience

  1239. eternal life,

  1240. is that

  1241. worth the

  1242. awkwardness?

  1243. If we

  1244. asked the

  1245. apostle Paul

  1246. that, he

  1247. would say

  1248. yes.

  1249. If we

  1250. asked Jesus

  1251. that, he

  1252. would say

  1253. yes.

  1254. Jonah 3

  1255. has a

  1256. way of

  1257. exposing

  1258. us

  1259. because we

  1260. tend to be

  1261. more concerned

  1262. about our

  1263. own reputation

  1264. than God's

  1265. reputation.

  1266. We tend to

  1267. be more

  1268. concerned about

  1269. what people

  1270. think about

  1271. us than

  1272. what God

  1273. really thinks

  1274. about them.

  1275. And so if

  1276. we concern

  1277. ourselves more

  1278. and more with

  1279. what God

  1280. thinks of the

  1281. perishing,

  1282. our hearts

  1283. are going to

  1284. follow his

  1285. heart.

  1286. The want

  1287. to see

  1288. them

  1289. turn

  1290. and experience

  1291. salvation.

  1292. We've

  1293. looked at

  1294. one obstacle

  1295. and that's

  1296. our fear

  1297. of what

  1298. people think

  1299. about us,

  1300. fear of

  1301. rejection.

  1302. There's

  1303. another

  1304. obstacle

  1305. to our

  1306. evangelism,

  1307. to our

  1308. communicating

  1309. the gospel

  1310. to people.

  1311. And it's

  1312. something

  1313. different than

  1314. the fear

  1315. of what

  1316. other people

  1317. think.

  1318. It's called

  1319. unbelief.

  1320. faith.

  1321. And here's

  1322. how it

  1323. works.

  1324. We see

  1325. people around

  1326. us and

  1327. we wonder,

  1328. I wonder if

  1329. they're saved.

  1330. And then what

  1331. follows that is

  1332. something like

  1333. this.

  1334. God can't

  1335. save him.

  1336. God can't

  1337. save her.

  1338. They're

  1339. unsavable.

  1340. We think

  1341. things like,

  1342. he's too

  1343. entrenched in a

  1344. homosexual lifestyle

  1345. to ever

  1346. repent.

  1347. We think

  1348. things like,

  1349. she's just

  1350. too liberal

  1351. to respond.

  1352. He's too

  1353. absorbed with

  1354. himself.

  1355. She loves

  1356. money too

  1357. much.

  1358. He's too

  1359. into his

  1360. career.

  1361. She's too

  1362. scientific.

  1363. He's burned

  1364. after burn

  1365. after burn

  1366. from church

  1367. after church

  1368. after church.

  1369. She's a

  1370. Muslim.

  1371. She would

  1372. never,

  1373. ever repent.

  1374. That's what

  1375. we think.

  1376. These are

  1377. examples of

  1378. excuses

  1379. born of

  1380. unbelief.

  1381. An unbelief

  1382. in the power

  1383. of God

  1384. unleashed

  1385. through the

  1386. gospel of

  1387. Jesus Christ.

  1388. Paul says,

  1389. I'm not ashamed

  1390. of the gospel

  1391. for it is

  1392. God's power

  1393. unto salvation

  1394. for all

  1395. who believe.

  1396. So I want

  1397. to encourage

  1398. you.

  1399. I want

  1400. Jonah 3

  1401. to encourage

  1402. you along

  1403. these lines.

  1404. If God

  1405. could turn

  1406. Nineveh

  1407. bring about

  1408. repentance,

  1409. he can do

  1410. the same

  1411. in Kenosha.

  1412. Look at how

  1413. the Ninevites

  1414. respond to

  1415. Jonah's

  1416. preaching in

  1417. verse 5.

  1418. Jonah

  1419. proclaims

  1420. these five

  1421. words,

  1422. and Nineveh,

  1423. we read,

  1424. the people

  1425. of Nineveh

  1426. believed God.

  1427. They

  1428. believed God.

  1429. They heard

  1430. the message

  1431. and they

  1432. believed God.

  1433. Notice the

  1434. wording.

  1435. They believed

  1436. God,

  1437. not

  1438. Jonah.

  1439. They believed

  1440. that it was

  1441. God speaking

  1442. to them,

  1443. that it was

  1444. God making

  1445. his appeal

  1446. through Jonah

  1447. to them.

  1448. God.

  1449. They believed

  1450. and they

  1451. repented.

  1452. And they

  1453. believed that

  1454. they were on

  1455. the road of

  1456. destruction,

  1457. that they were

  1458. in sin,

  1459. and that they

  1460. needed to

  1461. turn around.

  1462. So look at how

  1463. they responded

  1464. in verse 5.

  1465. It was an

  1466. immediate response.

  1467. Verse 4,

  1468. he proclaims,

  1469. 40 days,

  1470. you'll be

  1471. overthrown.

  1472. Verse 5,

  1473. and the people

  1474. of Nineveh

  1475. responded.

  1476. They believed

  1477. in God.

  1478. It was immediate.

  1479. It was a

  1480. real response.

  1481. They called

  1482. a fast.

  1483. They put on

  1484. sackcloth.

  1485. Eventually,

  1486. the king of

  1487. Nineveh would

  1488. sit in ashes.

  1489. Do you know

  1490. what all that's

  1491. about?

  1492. Repentance.

  1493. Humbling

  1494. oneself under

  1495. God's mighty

  1496. hand.

  1497. It's all

  1498. demonstrations of

  1499. humility.

  1500. It's not a

  1501. time to eat.

  1502. It's not a

  1503. time to be

  1504. comfortable.

  1505. It's a time

  1506. to cry out

  1507. because God

  1508. has addressed

  1509. us and has

  1510. warned us

  1511. that we're in

  1512. the path of

  1513. destruction.

  1514. We must turn.

  1515. It's a broad

  1516. response.

  1517. From the

  1518. greatest,

  1519. verse 5,

  1520. from the

  1521. greatest to

  1522. the least.

  1523. And then in

  1524. verse 6,

  1525. we're brought

  1526. into the very

  1527. throne room

  1528. of Nineveh.

  1529. To the king

  1530. of Nineveh.

  1531. The greatest

  1532. Ninevite.

  1533. He represents

  1534. his people.

  1535. And we read

  1536. in verse 6,

  1537. the word reached

  1538. the king of

  1539. Nineveh.

  1540. And literally,

  1541. that word means

  1542. touched the

  1543. king of

  1544. Nineveh.

  1545. He was cut

  1546. quick.

  1547. Those five

  1548. words,

  1549. God packed

  1550. a punch.

  1551. And the

  1552. king arose,

  1553. removed his

  1554. robe,

  1555. put on

  1556. sackcloth,

  1557. and sat

  1558. in ashes.

  1559. A clear

  1560. demonstration

  1561. of repentance.

  1562. The greatest

  1563. of all

  1564. Ninevites

  1565. was humbling

  1566. himself.

  1567. And he

  1568. makes a

  1569. decree that

  1570. every,

  1571. all Ninevites

  1572. stop eating.

  1573. Call out

  1574. mightily to

  1575. God.

  1576. It's a

  1577. desperate

  1578. response.

  1579. It's urgent.

  1580. It's sobering.

  1581. Who knows?

  1582. God may

  1583. turn and

  1584. relent and

  1585. turn from

  1586. his fierce

  1587. anger so

  1588. that we

  1589. may not

  1590. perish.

  1591. They

  1592. realized

  1593. that they

  1594. were about

  1595. to be

  1596. destroyed.

  1597. They

  1598. destroyed.

  1599. You know

  1600. what it all

  1601. points to?

  1602. their response

  1603. was God

  1604. word.

  1605. Theirs

  1606. was a

  1607. repentance

  1608. born of

  1609. God.

  1610. Their

  1611. immediate

  1612. response

  1613. was belief

  1614. in God.

  1615. It was a

  1616. real response.

  1617. They put on

  1618. sackcloth and

  1619. fasted unto

  1620. the Lord.

  1621. It was a

  1622. broad response

  1623. from greatest

  1624. to least

  1625. to God.

  1626. It was

  1627. desperate.

  1628. They're

  1629. crying out

  1630. to God.

  1631. Elohim.

  1632. In

  1633. 2 Corinthians

  1634. 7, Paul

  1635. makes a

  1636. very important

  1637. distinction

  1638. between two

  1639. types of

  1640. grief.

  1641. Godly

  1642. grief

  1643. and worldly

  1644. grief.

  1645. A

  1646. godly

  1647. sorrow

  1648. and a

  1649. worldly

  1650. sorrow.

  1651. The

  1652. difference

  1653. is

  1654. orientation.

  1655. What it

  1656. is oriented

  1657. to.

  1658. Godly

  1659. grief

  1660. is

  1661. God

  1662. word

  1663. in its

  1664. orientation.

  1665. It's the

  1666. recognition

  1667. that first

  1668. and foremost

  1669. I have

  1670. sinned

  1671. against a

  1672. holy

  1673. God.

  1674. Psalm

  1675. 51

  1676. 4

  1677. Against

  1678. you

  1679. and you

  1680. alone

  1681. have I

  1682. sinned

  1683. and done

  1684. what is

  1685. evil

  1686. in your

  1687. sight.

  1688. Godly

  1689. grief

  1690. recognizes

  1691. and takes

  1692. responsibility

  1693. full

  1694. responsibility

  1695. for all

  1696. of one's

  1697. sins.

  1698. It's

  1699. me.

  1700. I have

  1701. sinned

  1702. against

  1703. you.

  1704. Godly

  1705. grief

  1706. leads to

  1707. true

  1708. repentance.

  1709. Worldly

  1710. grief

  1711. can be

  1712. described

  1713. as a

  1714. sorrow

  1715. a real

  1716. sorrow

  1717. a real

  1718. sorrow

  1719. for getting

  1720. caught.

  1721. A real

  1722. sorrow

  1723. for seeing

  1724. the consequences

  1725. coming and

  1726. know that

  1727. you're going

  1728. to get

  1729. hurt for

  1730. it.

  1731. But what

  1732. godly

  1733. grief is

  1734. missing

  1735. or what

  1736. worldly

  1737. grief is

  1738. missing

  1739. is God.

  1740. You don't

  1741. care.

  1742. Worldly

  1743. grief is a

  1744. godless

  1745. remorse.

  1746. And what

  1747. we see

  1748. Nineveh

  1749. doing

  1750. is a

  1751. godly

  1752. grief.

  1753. Godly

  1754. sorrow

  1755. sorrow

  1756. which leads

  1757. them to

  1758. a true

  1759. repentance.

  1760. Here's why

  1761. I'm telling

  1762. you this.

  1763. This

  1764. godly

  1765. sorrow

  1766. that results

  1767. in a true

  1768. repentance

  1769. this

  1770. god

  1771. word

  1772. repentance

  1773. is a

  1774. god

  1775. wrought

  1776. repentance.

  1777. God's

  1778. behind

  1779. this.

  1780. God's

  1781. bringing

  1782. this

  1783. about.

  1784. And here's

  1785. why I'm

  1786. telling you

  1787. this.

  1788. When we

  1789. make excuses

  1790. under our

  1791. from our

  1792. unbelief

  1793. they'll never

  1794. turn.

  1795. They won't

  1796. respond.

  1797. It's no point

  1798. telling them

  1799. they won't

  1800. respond anyway.

  1801. Let me decide

  1802. for them.

  1803. They're not

  1804. going to

  1805. respond.

  1806. God's

  1807. God's

  1808. God's

  1809. able to

  1810. turn

  1811. people.

  1812. God's

  1813. able to

  1814. bring about

  1815. repentance.

  1816. He's just

  1817. calling us

  1818. to speak

  1819. the message.

  1820. We can't

  1821. make someone

  1822. experience a

  1823. godly grief.

  1824. God does

  1825. that.

  1826. What we

  1827. can do

  1828. is tell

  1829. people that

  1830. they're going

  1831. the wrong

  1832. way and

  1833. that they

  1834. need to

  1835. turn to

  1836. Jesus.

  1837. While the

  1838. people of

  1839. Nineveh

  1840. recognize that

  1841. God is

  1842. making his

  1843. appeal to

  1844. them through

  1845. Jonah.

  1846. And in

  1847. 310,

  1848. God

  1849. relents.

  1850. When God

  1851. sees how

  1852. they turned

  1853. away from

  1854. their evil

  1855. way, how

  1856. they repented,

  1857. God relents

  1858. of the

  1859. disaster.

  1860. He turns

  1861. his just

  1862. anger, his

  1863. wrath, from

  1864. the Ninevites.

  1865. It raises

  1866. a question.

  1867. Did God

  1868. just change?

  1869. Did God

  1870. just change

  1871. his mind?

  1872. And is it

  1873. okay that

  1874. God changes

  1875. his mind?

  1876. Well, let

  1877. me just say

  1878. it this way.

  1879. What we see

  1880. happening in

  1881. Jonah 310

  1882. is not so

  1883. much God

  1884. changing his

  1885. mind as

  1886. the Ninevites

  1887. changing their

  1888. mind.

  1889. God's the

  1890. same.

  1891. I'm the

  1892. Lord, I

  1893. do not

  1894. change.

  1895. Malachi 3.

  1896. There's no

  1897. shifting shadow

  1898. in God.

  1899. He's the

  1900. same.

  1901. today,

  1902. tomorrow,

  1903. forever.

  1904. And so

  1905. what we see

  1906. happening though

  1907. is God

  1908. who is

  1909. who he

  1910. is responds

  1911. in his

  1912. purpose to

  1913. respond to

  1914. unrepentance

  1915. one way

  1916. and his

  1917. purpose to

  1918. respond to

  1919. repentance

  1920. another way.

  1921. And so

  1922. when the

  1923. Ninevites

  1924. repent,

  1925. God

  1926. relents

  1927. just like

  1928. he said

  1929. he would.

  1930. Jeremiah

  1931. 18,

  1932. 7-8,

  1933. I don't

  1934. have time

  1935. to go

  1936. into it.

  1937. Just

  1938. encourage you

  1939. to look

  1940. at it.

  1941. But what

  1942. I want to

  1943. point out

  1944. in Jonah

  1945. 310 is

  1946. that God's

  1947. nature hasn't

  1948. changed.

  1949. What has

  1950. changed in

  1951. Jonah 3

  1952. are the

  1953. Ninevites.

  1954. They've

  1955. turned away

  1956. from evil

  1957. and God

  1958. relents.

  1959. He's a

  1960. God who's

  1961. gracious and

  1962. merciful,

  1963. slow to

  1964. anger and

  1965. abounding in

  1966. steadfast love,

  1967. relenting from

  1968. disaster when

  1969. there's

  1970. repentance.

  1971. Is God

  1972. still a

  1973. God of

  1974. fierce anger?

  1975. Yes,

  1976. He is.

  1977. Yes,

  1978. He is.

  1979. Is God

  1980. storing up

  1981. wrath over

  1982. people of

  1983. Kenosha?

  1984. Yes,

  1985. He is.

  1986. Yes,

  1987. He is.

  1988. Will God

  1989. relent today

  1990. if people

  1991. repent?

  1992. Yes,

  1993. He will.

  1994. Yes,

  1995. He will.

  1996. He will

  1997. turn His

  1998. wrath from

  1999. a sinner

  2000. and pour

  2001. out His

  2002. wrath for

  2003. them on

  2004. Christ and

  2005. deliver them.

  2006. He relents.

  2007. God relents

  2008. when a

  2009. sinner repents

  2010. after hearing

  2011. the gospel

  2012. and believing

  2013. the gospel

  2014. from the

  2015. lips of

  2016. those who

  2017. are sent.

  2018. So,

  2019. in quick

  2020. fashion,

  2021. let me just

  2022. say four

  2023. things.

  2024. all people

  2025. everywhere are

  2026. important to

  2027. God.

  2028. That's why

  2029. He sent

  2030. Jonah to

  2031. Nineveh.

  2032. That's why

  2033. He sent

  2034. us here.

  2035. God has

  2036. entrusted us

  2037. with His

  2038. message,

  2039. the gospel.

  2040. He wants

  2041. to make

  2042. His appeal

  2043. through us

  2044. to the

  2045. people of

  2046. Kenosha,

  2047. just like

  2048. He appealed

  2049. through Jonah

  2050. to Nineveh.

  2051. God.

  2052. Third,

  2053. just as

  2054. pagans

  2055. repented in

  2056. the 8th

  2057. century when

  2058. they heard

  2059. God,

  2060. they will

  2061. repent in

  2062. the 21st

  2063. century when

  2064. they hear

  2065. God speaking

  2066. to them.

  2067. Let that

  2068. build your

  2069. faith.

  2070. And the

  2071. fourth thing

  2072. is who

  2073. our God

  2074. is.

  2075. When people

  2076. repent with

  2077. a godly

  2078. grief,

  2079. God relents.

  2080. He's

  2081. gracious,

  2082. merciful,

  2083. slow to

  2084. anger,

  2085. abounding in

  2086. steadfast love.

  2087. He relents

  2088. from disaster.

  2089. He's

  2090. poured it on

  2091. Christ and

  2092. made it

  2093. available to

  2094. anyone who

  2095. will call on

  2096. the name of

  2097. the Lord.

  2098. You're going

  2099. to leave this

  2100. building.

  2101. And when

  2102. you're leaving

  2103. the front door

  2104. over the

  2105. door,

  2106. you are now

  2107. entering your

  2108. mission field.

  2109. I hope you've

  2110. seen that.

  2111. You walk

  2112. out,

  2113. you're going

  2114. to spend

  2115. the rest of

  2116. your day.

  2117. You're going

  2118. to see a

  2119. lot of

  2120. people.

  2121. The question

  2122. that I want

  2123. you to ask

  2124. is,

  2125. not what

  2126. does this

  2127. people think

  2128. of me.

  2129. The question

  2130. I want you

  2131. to be asking

  2132. is this.

  2133. What does

  2134. God think

  2135. about that

  2136. person?

  2137. Is that

  2138. person in

  2139. right standing

  2140. with God?

  2141. If God

  2142. brought about

  2143. repentance in

  2144. Nineveh,

  2145. he can bring

  2146. it about in

  2147. Kenosha.

  2148. Let's pray.

  2149. God in

  2150. heaven,

  2151. we are a

  2152. people that

  2153. need your

  2154. strength and

  2155. empowerment to

  2156. proclaim the

  2157. message you've

  2158. given us.

  2159. We're fearful,

  2160. we make

  2161. excuses,

  2162. God we can

  2163. distract

  2164. ourselves very

  2165. easily,

  2166. but God would

  2167. you help us

  2168. to see the

  2169. people of

  2170. Kenosha the

  2171. way that you

  2172. see the people

  2173. of Kenosha.

  2174. God would

  2175. you use us

  2176. to appeal to

  2177. them with the

  2178. gospel of

  2179. Jesus Christ.

  2180. God would

  2181. you save

  2182. because we

  2183. know that

  2184. anyone who

  2185. calls upon

  2186. your name

  2187. will be

  2188. saved.

  2189. Amen.
