  1. Amen.

  2. Amen.

  3. We have weighty things going on.

  4. And this afternoon is a parade.

  5. You know, people will be gathering for this parade

  6. all along 60th Avenue,

  7. all along Library Square.

  8. There will be hundreds, if not thousands,

  9. of people coming out to watch

  10. the Kenosha Civic Veterans Day Parade.

  11. Surely, many people will have been saved.

  12. Many people in attendance

  13. will have gone from darkness to light,

  14. but the majority of people

  15. that will be participating in

  16. and watching this parade

  17. are perishing in their sin.

  18. Now, I know that by saying that,

  19. I can be a giant party pooper.

  20. That I can be, so to speak,

  21. reigning on your Civic Veterans Day parade.

  22. Maybe you're like,

  23. you know, Salvati,

  24. I just really want to go

  25. and hang out with friends and family,

  26. see some muscle cars,

  27. be wowed by some acrobats,

  28. listen to some bands,

  29. celebrate our great country,

  30. and I really don't want to be thinking

  31. about the people around me.

  32. I don't want to be thinking

  33. about their standing before God.

  34. You must.

  35. You must.

  36. Because it's true.

  37. What is more important to God?

  38. A parade?

  39. Celebrating our independence as a nation?

  40. Or the eternal standing of each person present?

  41. This morning, we've reached the climax

  42. of the book of Jonah.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  43. Chapter 4.

  44. Climax of the book.

  45. It's been quite a story.

  46. Chapter 1, Jonah gets called.

  47. Turns the other way.

  48. Goes as far away from Nineveh as he can.

  49. God catches him.

  50. Remember that storm at sea.

  51. And during that storm,

  52. the unbelieving,

  53. those non-Hebrew crew,

  54. do you remember what happens to them?

  55. They end up crying out to Jonah's God

  56. for deliverance.

  57. And do you remember what God did?

  58. He delivered the crew.

  59. All who call upon the name of the Lord

  60. will be saved.

  61. And so chapter 1 closes

  62. with this non-Jewish crew

  63. having believed in Yahweh,

  64. going and rejoicing

  65. in this great deliverance

  66. they've experienced.

  67. And the prophet himself

  68. is now in the Mediterranean Sea.

  69. That's how Jonah 1 closes.

  70. And then with Jonah 2,

  71. as Jonah sinks down

  72. into the depths of the Mediterranean,

  73. as he draws closer and closer

  74. to the gates of death,

  75. as he descends lower and lower,

  76. it finally occurs to him

  77. that not only is he perishing,

  78. but he can call out

  79. on the name of the Lord Himself.

  80. And so at the verge

  81. of losing consciousness,

  82. Jonah cries out to his God

  83. of whom he's a prophet.

  84. And God supernaturally delivers him.

  85. He sends a great fish

  86. that swallows him whole

  87. in order to wholly deliver him.

  88. And as a result,

  89. Jonah rejoices.

  90. He celebrates.

  91. He declares,

  92. salvation belongs to the Lord.

  93. Hallelujah, amen.

  94. I've been delivered.

  95. All who call on the name

  96. of the Lord will be saved.

  97. And now,

  98. at the end of Jonah 2,

  99. Jonah has experienced

  100. deliverance from being,

  101. from perishing.

  102. God commands the fish

  103. to spit him out.

  104. Spit out.

  105. In chapter 3,

  106. Jonah is recommissioned by God.

  107. Sent to Nineveh.

  108. And Jonah has been changed enough

  109. to be willing to go.

  110. And so Jonah obeys.

  111. And as he gets to Nineveh,

  112. into the very heart of the city,

  113. he declares a message

  114. that's just five words in Hebrew.

  115. Just five words.

  116. But it was anointed by God.

  117. And as a result,

  118. there is a city-wide revival

  119. of foreigners.

  120. And they call out to

  121. the one true God,

  122. Yahweh.

  123. They have realized

  124. that because of their sin,

  125. they were perishing.

  126. Doomed for destruction.

  127. And so they repent.

  128. They cry out to God.

  129. And God,

  130. seeing their repentant hearts,

  131. He relents

  132. of the disaster He foretold.

  133. You see that in chapter 3,

  134. verse 10.

  135. All who call upon the name of the Lord

  136. will be saved.

  137. And so the book of Jonah

  138. is one

  139. supernatural deliverance

  140. after another.

  141. God saving Gentiles,

  142. God saving Hebrews,

  143. God saving Gentiles.

  144. God has a heart for all people.

  145. And so here we are

  146. in Jonah chapter 4.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  147. The climax of the book.

  148. It's all been moving to a point.

  149. And it comes to a head

  150. in a dialogue

  151. between Jonah and God.

  152. A dialogue in reaction

  153. to what God has just done.

  154. God's delivered the Ninevites

  155. and Jonah is hot!

  156. Man, he's angry!

  157. And so the dialogue starts

  158. with a heated accusation

  159. from the prophet

  160. to his God.

  161. We'll see that in verses 1-3.

  162. And that moves to a

  163. loving confrontation

  164. of God with His prophet.

  165. And then finally,

  166. the chapter in book

  167. climaxes in a very challenging question

  168. in verses 10 and 11.

  169. A question that we're going to have

  170. to end up asking ourselves.

  171. So let me walk through

  172. this story with you.

  173. Let's start with this

  174. heated accusation.

  175. So God has just delivered

  176. 120,000 Ninevites.

  177. By the way,

  178. they were enemies of Israel

  179. and brutal enemies of Israel.

  180. He's just delivered him.

  181. We see in verse 10 of chapter 3,

  182. God has relented.

  183. And then the very next verse,

  184. chapter 4, verse 1,

  185. what you read is this.

  186. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly

  187. and he was angry.

  188. God relents

  189. and Jonah rails.

  190. He is so mad.

  191. It's quite a contrast.

  192. Why is Jonah so angry?

  193. I mean, is this the same Jonah

  194. that we see rejoicing

  195. in God's deliverance

  196. at the end of Jonah 2?

  197. Salvation belongs to the Lord!

  198. Same guy?

  199. It is the same guy.

  200. Why would Jonah rejoice

  201. in God's deliverance

  202. at the end of Jonah 2,

  203. but then get all bent out of shape

  204. at God's deliverance

  205. that we see in Jonah 3?

  206. What's going on?

  207. Well, it has everything to do

  208. with those who are being delivered.

  209. In Jonah 2,

  210. it was Jonah that was perishing.

  211. In Jonah 3,

  212. it was the Ninevites

  213. who were perishing.

  214. And so what we see going on here

  215. is that when God's mercy

  216. and steadfast love

  217. was extended to Jonah

  218. in Jonah 2,

  219. thanksgiving, praise,

  220. and glory to God.

  221. But when we see God

  222. extending this same mercy,

  223. this same steadfast love

  224. to the Ninevites,

  225. the enemies of Israel

  226. in Jonah 3,

  227. Jonah is outraged.

  228. His true colors are revealed.

  229. Jonah accuses God

  230. out of his anger.

  231. By the way,

  232. we shouldn't be surprised

  233. that when we are saved by Jesus

  234. that there is more work

  235. to be done later on

  236. to work out bigotry,

  237. to work out edges.

  238. It's typical.

  239. It's normal.

  240. But in verse 2,

  241. we see Jonah

  242. angrily accusing God.

  243. And we learn,

  244. finally,

  245. why Jonah left

  246. in the first place.

  247. Why he hightailed it

  248. out to Tarshish.

  249. O Lord,

  250. is not this what I said

  251. when I was yet in my country?

  252. That is why I made haste

  253. to flee to Tarshish?

  254. What he's saying is this.

  255. Is this not the reason

  256. why I left in the first place?

  257. What's the reason?

  258. His reason for running

  259. is astonishing.

  260. For,

  261. I knew

  262. that you, God,

  263. are a gracious God

  264. and merciful,

  265. slow to anger

  266. and abounding in steadfast love

  267. and relenting from disaster.

  268. Jonah's anger

  269. is because God

  270. is compassionate

  271. towards sinners.

  272. Jonah is angry

  273. at God

  274. that God would deliver

  275. the Ninevites.

  276. What is blowing

  277. Jonah's categories here

  278. is that the Ninevites

  279. were not only

  280. not Jews,

  281. but they were enemies

  282. of Israel

  283. in a looming

  284. and brutal threat.

  285. What are you doing,

  286. God,

  287. saving them?

  288. What we see happening here

  289. is an 8th century

  290. B.C.

  291. prophet

  292. who is throwing

  293. a temper tantrum

  294. after

  295. he's just preached

  296. and seen

  297. 120,000 people

  298. repent

  299. and experience

  300. God's deliverance.

  301. It's amazing,

  302. isn't it?

  303. It's not.

  304. Jonah is angry

  305. because he did not

  306. want Nineveh

  307. to be spared

  308. and he holds

  309. God responsible.

  310. It's so arrogant.

  311. It's like he's saying,

  312. I knew it.

  313. I knew if I went

  314. and preached,

  315. you would do

  316. your nice God thing.

  317. You would deliver him.

  318. I knew it!

  319. You know,

  320. it's like

  321. Jonah is saying,

  322. hey,

  323. you can deliver

  324. your people,

  325. the Jews,

  326. all you want,

  327. God.

  328. Show us compassion

  329. over and over

  330. and over again,

  331. but when it comes

  332. to showing

  333. any kind of mercy

  334. and compassion

  335. on our enemies,

  336. done!

  337. You've crossed a line.

  338. I'm ticked!

  339. That's what he's saying.

  340. Jonah.

  341. It's obvious

  342. that Jonah is not

  343. getting the scope

  344. and scale

  345. of God's heart

  346. for all people.

  347. That's obvious,

  348. isn't it?

  349. He's stuck.

  350. The very reason

  351. God chose Israel

  352. in the first place

  353. to be his covenant people

  354. was to show

  355. to the surrounding nations

  356. his great

  357. and steadfast love.

  358. He chose Israel

  359. to be the object

  360. of his affection

  361. so that their

  362. resulting holiness

  363. would shine like a beacon

  364. to the Gentile nations

  365. surrounding them,

  366. calling them

  367. to the worship

  368. of the one true God.

  369. But Jonah

  370. has gone inward.

  371. Jonah is hoarding

  372. his God.

  373. God is for us

  374. and us alone.

  375. His grace,

  376. His mercy,

  377. His pity,

  378. His compassion,

  379. His steadfast love

  380. is for us.

  381. And what God

  382. wants to do here

  383. and what God does here

  384. is correct that.

  385. He's not going to let

  386. Jonah put him

  387. in a box.

  388. God wants to use

  389. His people.

  390. He's always wanted

  391. to use His people.

  392. He wants to use

  393. His people

  394. to show the world

  395. who He is.

  396. A holy God

  397. willing to save

  398. any sinner

  399. who calls upon Him

  400. because He's gracious

  401. and merciful,

  402. slow to anger,

  403. abounding in steadfast love

  404. and relenting

  405. from disaster.

  406. So in verse 3,

  407. Jonah is so angry

  408. that he's so caught up

  409. in the injustice

  410. that he sees,

  411. he wants to die.

  412. He'd rather die

  413. than see the Ninevites live.

  414. That's the point.

  415. It's kind of ironic.

  416. I mean,

  417. this is the same guy

  418. that called out

  419. to the same God

  420. when he was dying

  421. and God delivered him.

  422. What happened?

  423. Jonah

  424. is being really selfish

  425. with his God.

  426. Jonah wants God

  427. to save his way,

  428. not God's way.

  429. Jonah,

  430. his disdain

  431. for the Ninevites

  432. forms his theology,

  433. forms his thinking

  434. about God

  435. and God is like,

  436. no, you can't do that, buddy.

  437. And so he corrects him.

  438. He lovingly confronts Jonah.

  439. And so here we have

  440. the beginning of Jonah 4,

  441. a really angry prophet,

  442. angry at his God.

  443. For saving people

  444. who needed to be saved.

  445. And if there's one thing

  446. that we can learn

  447. from Jonah's mistake

  448. is that we,

  449. the church,

  450. the new covenant people of God,

  451. we don't hoard

  452. God's mercy and grace.

  453. We don't want to keep it

  454. in the walls

  455. of this building.

  456. We're not to keep

  457. who our great God is

  458. a secret

  459. from the rest of the city.

  460. We don't decide

  461. who God shows compassion on.

  462. We don't decide

  463. who God shows his wrath to.

  464. We don't make that decision.

  465. We have no grounds

  466. to challenge God's compassion

  467. because we,

  468. of all people,

  469. we deserve wrath,

  470. but Christ

  471. has shown us grace,

  472. mercy,

  473. and steadfast love.

  474. Jonah is standing

  475. in judgment

  476. over the judge.

  477. It is astonishing.

  478. And so God,

  479. the judge,

  480. lovingly

  481. confronts

  482. this angry prophet.

  483. God puts on a clinic.

  484. So Jonah vents.

  485. He has a hissy fit.

  486. And now God responds

  487. in verses 4 through 9.

  488. In verse 4,

  489. Jonah in verse 3 is like,

  490. I'm so mad I can die!

  491. Take my life!

  492. And in verse 4,

  493. God totally ignores it.

  494. Totally ignores it.

  495. He totally ignores

  496. Jonah's drama

  497. and confronts him

  498. with a question.

  499. A question intended

  500. to expose Jonah's heart.

  501. Jonah,

  502. do you do well

  503. to be angry?

  504. Maybe a better way

  505. of understanding it is,

  506. Jonah,

  507. what right do you have

  508. to be angry?

  509. What grounds?

  510. How can you,

  511. Jonah,

  512. be angry

  513. with my

  514. compassionate heart

  515. to save anyone

  516. who will call upon

  517. my name?

  518. Why are you getting

  519. angry at that,

  520. Jonah?

  521. And in verse 5,

  522. we see Jonah's response.

  523. So God asks him

  524. the question

  525. in verse 4.

  526. And in verse 5,

  527. what does Jonah do?

  528. I'm out of here.

  529. He walks out.

  530. Walks out of the city

  531. of Nineveh.

  532. Walks out,

  533. sets up a booth,

  534. sets up shop,

  535. and it's kind of like,

  536. okay, God,

  537. show me.

  538. Clear him out.

  539. Basically,

  540. it's kind of like Jonah

  541. saying,

  542. okay, God,

  543. I'll give you one more chance.

  544. I don't want to talk

  545. about this anymore.

  546. I'm going out.

  547. I want to see,

  548. I want to see you

  549. do your stuff

  550. on this city.

  551. So Jonah's hoping

  552. that God will change

  553. his mind

  554. or something,

  555. but

  556. what we know

  557. is that he's still angry.

  558. So what's God

  559. going to do?

  560. How does God

  561. handle this

  562. heated prophet?

  563. I mean,

  564. I guess God

  565. could have responded

  566. by wiping Jonah

  567. off the face

  568. of the earth

  569. if he wanted to.

  570. but he doesn't.

  571. God responds

  572. to Jonah

  573. as he's responded

  574. to Jonah

  575. all throughout

  576. the book of Jonah

  577. with tremendous patience.

  578. God is slow

  579. to anger

  580. and abounding

  581. in steadfast love

  582. not only to sinners,

  583. not only to those

  584. outside the people

  585. of God,

  586. but with his people.

  587. And the way

  588. that God handles

  589. Jonah's sinful anger

  590. is just simply amazing.

  591. And this is our God.

  592. He patiently

  593. addresses this guy.

  594. He is patient

  595. with Jonah.

  596. He is patient

  597. with us.

  598. Even in the midst

  599. of our missionary

  600. call as a church,

  601. God is patient

  602. with us.

  603. Working things out.

  604. So in verse 6,

  605. God in his loving wisdom

  606. changes tactics.

  607. He's not.

  608. It's kind of like

  609. God takes stock.

  610. Okay, Jonah,

  611. you're not obviously

  612. listening to me.

  613. So I'll just expose you

  614. in another way.

  615. And so,

  616. call to mind

  617. that God

  618. is sovereign

  619. over all things.

  620. He orchestrates

  621. all things

  622. to do his bidding.

  623. And we've already

  624. seen it in chapter 1

  625. where God

  626. calls out a storm

  627. and throws it

  628. onto the Mediterranean Sea

  629. to get done

  630. what he wanted

  631. to get done.

  632. And we see it

  633. in chapter 2

  634. and God appointing

  635. a great fish

  636. to swallow Jonah

  637. and then to spit him out.

  638. Here in chapter 4,

  639. we see God's

  640. sovereign control

  641. over all things

  642. to carry out

  643. his purposes.

  644. It's on display again

  645. with three appointees.

  646. And might I just tell you,

  647. God is determined

  648. to expose

  649. Jonah's hypocrisy

  650. that God can save him

  651. but God can't save

  652. anybody else.

  653. It's double standard.

  654. He's going to expose it

  655. because he loves Jonah.

  656. So in verse 6,

  657. God appoints a plant.

  658. Appointing number one.

  659. And he makes this plant

  660. grow over Jonah

  661. in order to provide

  662. shade for his heaven.

  663. Remember,

  664. we're in the Middle East.

  665. This is in modern day Iraq.

  666. It gets hot.

  667. And we read

  668. that God

  669. raised this plant

  670. up to verse 6

  671. to save him

  672. from his discomfort.

  673. It's tongue in cheek.

  674. And what is Jonah's response

  675. to this leafy plant

  676. that has just grown

  677. over him?

  678. Exceeding gladness.

  679. He's now run the gamut.

  680. He was exceedingly angry

  681. and now he's exceedingly happy.

  682. He's so happy

  683. that he's got shade

  684. for his head.

  685. But God,

  686. in his loving wisdom,

  687. knows that this is just a setup.

  688. God is sovereignly,

  689. wisely setting Jonah up

  690. for a very important lesson.

  691. verse 7,

  692. God appoints a worm

  693. at dawn the next day

  694. in that worm

  695. attacks the plant.

  696. Sometime early morning,

  697. crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch,

  698. crunch,

  699. worm eats the plant,

  700. some aspect of it,

  701. and the plant withers.

  702. Right at the,

  703. just at the right time.

  704. So now,

  705. the plant withers,

  706. Jonah's exposed,

  707. just in time for verse 8,

  708. when the sun rises

  709. and appointing number 3,

  710. God appoints a scorching east wind

  711. that when coupled with the sun,

  712. beats down on Jonah's head

  713. and pushes our prophet Jonah

  714. to a physical breaking point.

  715. He wants to die again.

  716. Echoing the words of verse 3,

  717. he asks God to take his life.

  718. It's better for me to die

  719. than to live.

  720. I can't stand this heat.

  721. I can't live without this plant.

  722. Jonah is upset

  723. that the plant has perished.

  724. He has pity on the plant.

  725. And up until this point,

  726. in the book of Jonah,

  727. the only one he's been concerned about

  728. when it comes to perishing

  729. has been himself.

  730. He wasn't concerned about

  731. the captain or the crew

  732. who were perishing on the ship

  733. in chapter 1,

  734. verses 6 and 14.

  735. He wasn't concerned about

  736. the 120,000 Ninevites

  737. who were going to perish

  738. if they hadn't repented.

  739. Chapter 3, verse 9.

  740. For the first time in the book,

  741. Jonah is concerned

  742. about something perishing

  743. besides himself.

  744. And do you know what it is?

  745. A plant.

  746. God is exactly,

  747. He's got Jonah

  748. exactly where He wants him.

  749. God has exposed Jonah

  750. and once again,

  751. God has brought Jonah

  752. to an end to himself.

  753. We saw that in chapter 2.

  754. Why is God bringing Jonah

  755. to an end to Himself?

  756. Because God loves Jonah

  757. and He does not want Jonah

  758. ruled by any kind of selfish hate

  759. that boxes God in

  760. to some kind of self-made God.

  761. He wants Jonah to take on

  762. His heart for those

  763. who are perishing.

  764. Instead of being bitter

  765. and callous and whatever,

  766. I don't give a rip,

  767. God wants Jonah

  768. to be full of pity

  769. and to be compassionate

  770. and to be concerned about

  771. these people who are perishing.

  772. The whole episode

  773. with the plant

  774. is one great sovereign orchestration

  775. of love for Jonah

  776. to expose Jonah,

  777. to confront Jonah,

  778. to show him

  779. his double standard.

  780. Now that God has Jonah

  781. where He wants him,

  782. verse 8,

  783. God asked Jonah

  784. the same question

  785. as He did in verse 4

  786. with a slight adjustment.

  787. Jonah,

  788. do you have the right

  789. to be angry

  790. about the plant

  791. that's just perished?

  792. Jonah,

  793. do you have the right

  794. to be angry right now

  795. about that plant

  796. that is no more?

  797. Jonah gets the question

  798. and man,

  799. He has had it.

  800. Yes,

  801. I have the right

  802. to be angry,

  803. angry enough to die.

  804. Thank you.

  805. Let me just die,

  806. God!

  807. He doesn't want to,

  808. He doesn't get His way.

  809. And so He does what we do

  810. when we don't get His way.

  811. He pouts.

  812. I mean,

  813. big time pout,

  814. like,

  815. I'm out of here,

  816. pout.

  817. Classic,

  818. self-preoccupation.

  819. And before you look down

  820. at your nose at Jonah,

  821. remember,

  822. we've got the same

  823. tendency ourselves.

  824. Even after being saved,

  825. when things don't go

  826. our own way,

  827. when we're denied

  828. our comfort,

  829. we get upset.

  830. could it be

  831. that when we are

  832. denied comfort,

  833. it's actually God

  834. orchestrating our situation

  835. in order to expose

  836. our hearts

  837. so that He can get

  838. at the comfort

  839. that gets in the way

  840. of His compassion

  841. for all people?

  842. Could it be?

  843. Could it be?

  844. God lovingly

  845. confronts Jonah

  846. and us.

  847. Do we have the right

  848. to get angry with God

  849. when He sovereignly

  850. denies us

  851. some kind of shade?

  852. Some kind of comfort?

  853. When He exposes us

  854. with some kind

  855. of scorching heat?

  856. Some kind of hardship?

  857. We're going to experience

  858. some heat

  859. with the Supreme Court's

  860. decision this past week.

  861. Do we get angry

  862. with God?

  863. Do we have the right

  864. to be angry?

  865. God is just scratching

  866. at the surface

  867. of Jonah's heart.

  868. Because you know

  869. what He's really doing?

  870. He's helping Jonah

  871. and us

  872. see what we really

  873. get upset about.

  874. What really

  875. ticks us off.

  876. What really

  877. gets our goat.

  878. what do you get

  879. upset about?

  880. What do you

  881. get angry about?

  882. What happens

  883. when you're denied

  884. some shade?

  885. Do you get angry

  886. when you are denied

  887. the shade of sleep?

  888. I do.

  889. When you're denied

  890. the shade comfort

  891. of money,

  892. the shade of advancement

  893. success?

  894. When you're denied

  895. the shade comfort

  896. of being well thought

  897. of by those people

  898. around you.

  899. What God is doing here

  900. is setting Jonah up,

  901. exposing him

  902. in order to make

  903. a glorious point.

  904. plant.

  905. In other words,

  906. this whole plant

  907. episode

  908. is a divine

  909. setup.

  910. What God is doing

  911. is showing Jonah

  912. that he is getting

  913. upset about

  914. something

  915. terribly

  916. insignificant.

  917. a plant.

  918. He pities a plant

  919. more than

  920. 120,000

  921. people.

  922. So in verses

  923. 10 and 11,

  924. God turns the table

  925. on Jonah.

  926. It comes to a head.

  927. This whole book

  928. comes to a head

  929. in verses 10 and 11.

  930. And it takes the form

  931. of a very

  932. challenging question.

  933. It's the climax

  934. of the book.

  935. And it represents

  936. a kind of rationale.

  937. So let's look at

  938. verses 10 and 11.

  939. I'm going to read that.

  940. And the Lord said,

  941. You pity the plant

  942. for which you did

  943. not labor,

  944. nor did you make it

  945. grow,

  946. which came into being

  947. in a night

  948. and perished in a night.

  949. And should not

  950. I pity Nineveh,

  951. that great city

  952. in which there are

  953. more than

  954. 120,000 persons

  955. who do not know

  956. their right hand

  957. from their left

  958. and also

  959. much cattle.

  960. The kind of rationale

  961. that God is using

  962. right here,

  963. it's a kind of argument.

  964. It's called

  965. a how much more argument.

  966. And so

  967. there's a contrast

  968. between two things

  969. in order to show

  970. how much more

  971. one is

  972. over the other.

  973. We see it in Matthew 7.

  974. Jesus says,

  975. If you then

  976. who are evil

  977. know how to give

  978. good gifts

  979. to your children,

  980. how much more

  981. will your Father

  982. who is in Heaven

  983. give good things

  984. to those who ask Him?

  985. So it's a comparison

  986. between evil dads

  987. and our Heavenly Father

  988. and it gets to the point

  989. that God gives

  990. awesome gifts

  991. better than we can

  992. ever imagine.

  993. So Jesus' point is

  994. go big,

  995. go often to your God,

  996. ask Him for big stuff.

  997. That's the point.

  998. Back to Jonah 4.

  999. Here the

  1000. how much more argument

  1001. takes the form

  1002. of a question.

  1003. A question

  1004. aimed to make

  1005. a point.

  1006. And the comparison

  1007. in this

  1008. how much more argument

  1009. is between

  1010. Jonah's pity

  1011. for the plant

  1012. and God's pity

  1013. for the Ninevites.

  1014. So Jonah's pity

  1015. for a plant.

  1016. He did not labor

  1017. for this plant.

  1018. He did not make

  1019. this plant grow.

  1020. It was just

  1021. one plant.

  1022. It came into being

  1023. in a night

1024. and perished in a night.

  1025. It was a short-lived plant.

  1026. Bottom line is

  1027. it was a very

  1028. insignificant plant.

  1029. Now let's compare

  1030. that to God's pity

  1031. for the people

  1032. of Nineveh.

  1033. A great city

  1034. important to God.

  1035. Remember

  1036. Jonah 3.3

  1037. a great city

  1038. to God.

  1039. 120,000

  1040. people

  1041. not plants.

  1042. Image bearers.

  1043. 120,000

  1044. people

  1045. made

  1046. by God

  1047. like God

  1048. and for God.

  1049. 120,000

  1050. people

  1051. created by God

  1052. himself

  1053. to worship

  1054. him alone.

  1055. 120,000

  1056. people

  1057. who will

  1058. one day

  1059. stand before

  1060. God

  1061. someday

  1062. at the judgment.

  1063. 120,000

  1064. people

  1065. who do not

  1066. know their

  1067. left hand

  1068. from the right.

  1069. What's being said

  1070. there is

  1071. they're ignorant

  1072. of who God is

  1073. even though

  1074. they are morally

  1075. accountable to God.

  1076. I mean the whole

  1077. reason God

  1078. sent Jonah

  1079. in chapter 1

  1080. was because

  1081. their evil

  1082. was being

  1083. rising up

  1084. to God.

  1085. The very last

  1086. line is a little

  1087. odd isn't it?

  1088. Also much

  1089. cattle.

  1090. It's like

  1091. where did that

  1092. come from?

  1093. Well it's kind

  1094. of like this.

  1095. God's saying

  1096. hey if you

  1097. don't buy

  1098. the image

  1099. bearer

  1100. argument

  1101. cattle are

  1102. more important

  1103. than plants.

  1104. 120,000

  1105. people

  1106. perishing

  1107. is more

  1108. important

  1109. than one

  1110. plant

  1111. that

  1112. perished

  1113. Jonah.

  1114. From God's

  1115. perspective

  1116. what's

  1117. more

  1118. important

  1119. are

  1120. people

  1121. than

  1122. plants.

  1123. Jonah was

  1124. not seeing

  1125. things from

  1126. God's

  1127. perspective

  1128. but is

  1129. from his

  1130. own distorted

  1131. perspective.

  1132. He was

  1133. valuing

  1134. one plant

  1135. over

  1136. 120,000

  1137. people

  1138. therefore

  1139. the question

  1140. Jonah

  1141. you pitied

  1142. one

  1143. insignificant

  1144. plant

  1145. how much

  1146. more

  1147. should I

  1148. pity

  1149. 120,000

  1150. of my

  1151. image bearers

  1152. whose

  1153. eternity

  1154. is in

  1155. the balance.

  1156. Point made.

  1157. The point

  1158. has been made.

  1159. Jonah has

  1160. no right to be

  1161. angry with

  1162. God.

  1163. God has

  1164. every right

  1165. to save

  1166. whoever he

  1167. wants.

  1168. And we are

  1169. left asking

  1170. ourselves the

  1171. question

  1172. does God have

  1173. the right to

  1174. save anybody

  1175. he wants?

  1176. And here's

  1177. the point.

  1178. God has

  1179. every right

  1180. to show

  1181. mercy on

  1182. whomever he

  1183. pleases.

  1184. God has

  1185. every right

  1186. to show

  1187. mercy on

  1188. whomever he

  1189. pleases.

  1190. God is

  1191. not bound

  1192. by human

  1193. expectations

  1194. of who he

  1195. can and

  1196. who he

  1197. can't save.

  1198. God's not

  1199. even bound

  1200. by our

  1201. disobedience

  1202. and obeying

  1203. him in the

  1204. mission.

  1205. God is

  1206. free in

  1207. who he

  1208. is.

  1209. He's

  1210. gracious,

  1211. merciful,

  1212. slow to

  1213. anger,

  1214. abounding in

  1215. steadfast love,

  1216. relenting from

  1217. disaster.

  1218. He is

  1219. free to

  1220. have mercy

  1221. on whomever

  1222. he will.

  1223. And he

  1224. invites all

  1225. to come to

  1226. him for

  1227. salvation.

  1228. Let's fast

  1229. forward to

  1230. Jesus in

  1231. Matthew 11

  1232. 28 and

  1233. 29.

  1234. Jesus says

  1235. it this

  1236. way.

  1237. Come to

  1238. me all

  1239. who labor

  1240. and are

  1241. heavy laden

  1242. and I will

  1243. give you

  1244. rest.

  1245. No

  1246. qualifications

  1247. on the

  1248. all.

  1249. All who

  1250. are heavy

  1251. labor

  1252. and are

  1253. heavy laden

  1254. and I will

  1255. give you

  1256. rest.

  1257. Take my

  1258. yoke upon

  1259. you and

  1260. learn from

  1261. me for

  1262. I am

  1263. gentle and

  1264. lowly in

  1265. heart and

  1266. you will

  1267. find rest

  1268. for your

  1269. souls for

  1270. my yoke is

  1271. easy and

  1272. my burden

  1273. is light.

  1274. God wants

  1275. all people

  1276. everywhere to

  1277. call upon

  1278. his name

  1279. for salvation.

  1280. And what we

  1281. see in the

  1282. book of

  1283. Jonah is

  1284. that the

  1285. scope of

  1286. God's

  1287. saving grace

  1288. defies

  1289. Jonah's

  1290. expectations.

  1291. It makes

  1292. him angry.

  1293. God wants

  1294. all people

  1295. everywhere to

  1296. call upon

  1297. his name.

  1298. Experience

  1299. the mercy

  1300. he alone

  1301. can give.

  1302. All who

  1303. call upon

  1304. the name

  1305. of the

  1306. Lord will

  1307. be saved.

  1308. Salvation

  1309. belongs to

  1310. the Lord.

  1311. Salvation

  1312. for anyone

  1313. belongs to

  1314. the Lord.

  1315. So the

  1316. point being

  1317. made here is

  1318. God has the

  1319. right to

  1320. show mercy

  1321. on whomever

  1322. he pleases.

  1323. So I want

  1324. to bring that

  1325. to bear in

  1326. three ways

  1327. in our

  1328. lives.

  1329. First,

  1330. God's

  1331. heart for

  1332. people must

  1333. prioritize how

  1334. we live our

  1335. lives.

  1336. If God

  1337. prioritizes people

  1338. over plants

  1339. because people

  1340. are eternal

  1341. and plants

  1342. are temporal,

  1343. we too

  1344. must prioritize

  1345. people over

  1346. things.

  1347. Every person

  1348. is hardwired by

  1349. God to worship

  1350. God alone

  1351. and there's no

  1352. other name under

  1353. heaven by which

  1354. man can be

  1355. saved.

  1356. It's the name

  1357. of Jesus.

  1358. Jesus.

  1359. And so,

  1360. we've got to

  1361. ask the

  1362. question,

  1363. are we

  1364. elevating

  1365. something of

  1366. more importance

  1367. than people?

  1368. Or are we

  1369. getting distracted?

  1370. God's

  1371. second thing,

  1372. God's heart

  1373. for all the

  1374. Ninevites must

  1375. form our

  1376. heart for all

  1377. people.

  1378. Jonah's

  1379. mistake was

  1380. believing there

  1381. were some

  1382. people outside

  1383. the reach of

  1384. God's saving

  1385. grace.

  1386. of His

  1387. mercy.

  1388. And we

  1389. can't make

  1390. the same

  1391. mistake.

  1392. Last week

  1393. we talked

  1394. about some

  1395. obstacles to

  1396. sharing our

  1397. faith.

  1398. Fear,

  1399. unbelief.

  1400. So let me

  1401. ask you,

  1402. is there

  1403. someone or

  1404. a group of

  1405. people who

  1406. threaten you?

  1407. Or are

  1408. distasteful to

  1409. you?

  1410. Or you

  1411. just don't

  1412. believe we'll

  1413. be saved if

  1414. they hear the

  1415. gospel?

  1416. So you

  1417. run!

  1418. You pull

  1419. a Jonah.

  1420. we're more

  1421. like Jonah

  1422. than we

  1423. think.

  1424. And what

  1425. God does is

  1426. confronts us

  1427. with Himself.

  1428. He says,

  1429. this is who

  1430. I am!

  1431. All who

  1432. call upon

  1433. my great

  1434. name will

  1435. be saved,

  1436. even your

  1437. perceived

  1438. enemies,

  1439. even those

  1440. you think

  1441. are distasteful,

  1442. even those

  1443. who you

  1444. think right

  1445. now would

  1446. never respond.

  1447. All who

  1448. call upon

  1449. me will

  1450. be saved.

  1451. God's

  1452. love.

  1453. It has a

  1454. way of

  1455. softening

  1456. our hearts.

  1457. This forms

  1458. our mission

  1459. as a church.

  1460. That's why

  1461. we're here.

  1462. To make

  1463. known the

  1464. life-transforming

  1465. power of the

  1466. gospel of

  1467. Jesus Christ

  1468. to all

  1469. people.

  1470. The last

  1471. thing I want

  1472. you to see

  1473. here is

  1474. this.

  1475. God's

  1476. character

  1477. is

  1478. absolutely

  1479. glorious.

  1480. worthy of

  1481. eternal praise

  1482. and adoration

  1483. from as

  1484. many lips

  1485. as possible.

  1486. God

  1487. continues

  1488. today to

  1489. be a God

  1490. who is

  1491. gracious,

  1492. merciful,

  1493. slow to

  1494. anger,

  1495. and abounding

  1496. in steadfast

  1497. love,

  1498. relenting from

  1499. disaster.

  1500. Brother and

  1501. sister in

  1502. Christ,

  1503. can I just

  1504. remind you

  1505. that you,

  1506. by God's

  1507. grace,

  1508. because of

  1509. what Jesus

  1510. has done,

  1511. you have

  1512. experienced

  1513. His

  1514. relent of

  1515. disaster over

  1516. your head.

  1517. He delivered

  1518. you from the

  1519. wrath of

  1520. God.

  1521. Jonah used

  1522. God's

  1523. character against

  1524. him.

  1525. He accused

  1526. him.

  1527. He came

  1528. really close

  1529. to cursing

  1530. God.

  1531. He saw

  1532. God's

  1533. character as

  1534. a liability.

  1535. We in

  1536. Christ,

  1537. we don't

  1538. see God's

  1539. character as

  1540. a liability.

  1541. God's

  1542. character as

  1543. an asset.

  1544. We see

  1545. God's

  1546. character and

  1547. we are like,

  1548. who is like

  1549. you?

  1550. Gracious,

  1551. merciful,

  1552. slow to

  1553. anger,

  1554. abounding in

  1555. steadfast love,

  1556. relenting from

  1557. disaster, my

  1558. disaster, and

  1559. so we don't

  1560. accuse Him, we

  1561. worship Him.

  1562. We glorify Him.

  1563. So today, as

  1564. you leave this

  1565. building, there's

  1566. already people

  1567. lining up, I'm

  1568. sure.

  1569. You've seen all

  1570. the chairs set

  1571. up for the

  1572. parade.

  1573. This

  1574. afternoon, as

  1575. you watch the

  1576. participants of

  1577. the parade and

  1578. the spectators of

  1579. the parade,

  1580. can I just

  1581. encourage you to

  1582. see them as

  1583. God sees

  1584. them?

  1585. Image

  1586. bearers who

  1587. are perishing

  1588. and are in

  1589. need of hearing

  1590. the gospel of

  1591. Jesus Christ.

  1592. God has

  1593. entrusted us with

  1594. the only message

  1595. that will save

  1596. them.

  1597. God has

  1598. the book of

  1599. Jonah is not

  1600. about a big

  1601. fish.

  1602. The book of

  1603. Jonah is about

  1604. a big God

  1605. with a big

  1606. heart who

  1607. offers a big

  1608. salvation to a

  1609. lot of people.

  1610. Salvation belongs

  1611. to the Lord,

  1612. our Lord, our

  1613. Lord Jesus.

  1614. Let's pray.

  1615. God in

  1616. heaven, we

  1617. are freshly

  1618. aware of your

  1619. great heart for

  1620. all people and

  1621. we would pray

  1622. that God you

  1623. would make us as

  1624. a church, a

  1625. church that is

  1626. bold in our

  1627. witness and

  1628. winsome, that

  1629. as those who

  1630. have been

  1631. delivered from

  1632. disaster, that

  1633. we would speak

  1634. of your saving

  1635. grace to those

  1636. who would hear.

  1637. I pray that God

  1638. today, that as

  1639. we leave this

  1640. building and see

  1641. people,

  1642. hordes of

  1643. people, crowds

  1644. of people, that

  1645. we would see

  1646. them with new

  1647. eyes.

  1648. Give us a new

  1649. heart, your

  1650. heart, for all

  1651. people.

  1652. In Jesus' name,

  1653. amen.
