  1. Well, good morning.

  2. We are in a series on prayers,

  3. and we started this series by looking at

  4. Jesus' prayer in the Gospel of Luke, Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  5. I was the one who preached on that passage then,

  6. but I want to tell you that there's a very important verse

  7. in that passage that we shouldn't just look at lightly,

  8. that that verse itself deserves to be read

  9. and reflected on and considered seriously.

  10. And so let me ask you to turn to the Gospel of Luke,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  11. chapter 11, and let me point out this verse

  12. that we're going to be thinking about this morning.

  13. It is Luke 11, 13.

  14. Luke 11, 13.

  15. If you then, though you are evil,

  16. know how to give good gifts to your children,

  17. how much more will your Father in Heaven

  18. give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?

  19. So we're going to think and reflect on what it means

  20. for God to give us the Holy Spirit

  21. because we are His children.

  22. And so that is the basic thrust of the sermon this morning.

  23. We're going to look at two halves,

  24. the problem and the solution.

  25. And so let's begin with the problem.

  26. The problem shows up as early as Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  27. which is the disobedience of Adam and Eve and the fall.

  28. As God comes walking in the garden,

  29. they hide themselves.

  30. And Adam says,

  31. we are afraid.

  32. So I want us to think about prayer

  33. in relationship to the Father

  34. giving us the Holy Spirit

  35. in relationship to being afraid.

  36. That's where I'm hoping we will look at this morning.

  37. So, they were afraid.

  38. I want you to understand a couple of things.

  39. Most of us, I think,

  40. can relate to the doctrine of sin

  41. better than anything else

  42. because we are expert at sinning.

  43. At least I know I'm expert at sinning.

  44. I went to a university,

  45. University of California, Santa Barbara,

  46. where the student housing was called Sin City.

  47. I mean, we were competing with UCLA and Berkeley

  48. and other schools.

  49. We took pride in the fact

  50. that we could sin better than any other campus

  51. in the University of California system.

  52. So I'm a product of that environment.

  53. So, first of all,

  54. sinning is a lot more complicated than we think.

  55. Just in Hebrew alone,

  56. there are 13 different words for sinning.

  57. So sinning just covers

  58. one of 13 different things.

  59. But my purpose this morning

  60. is not to go through all 13 kinds.

  61. My purpose is to try to help us understand

  62. God giving us the Holy Spirit

  63. in relationship to fear.

  64. There are all kinds of fears.

  65. So just as there are many words for sinning,

  66. there are many kinds of fears.

  67. And some of them are good kinds,

  68. and some of them are terrible kinds.

  69. Let me just mention a couple good fears.

  70. If you're at all familiar with wisdom literature,

  71. that is to say Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job,

  72. you will notice that Proverbs begins with

  73. the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

  74. It also says the beginning of knowledge

  75. is the fear of the Lord.

  76. In Ecclesiastes, it says,

  77. now that we have considered everything,

  78. let's arrive at a conclusion.

  79. The conclusion is this,

  80. fear God and keep his commandments

  81. because this applies to everyone.

  82. So there we are encouraged to fear,

  83. but it is to fear God.

  84. So we want to fear God

  85. because that is the beginning of wisdom,

  86. that is beginning of knowledge,

  87. that's what it's all about.

  88. So that would be a healthy kind of fear.

  89. But there is another kind of fear.

  90. We wouldn't continue to use the word fear in our culture,

  91. but it is the verb that meant to fear in older English.

  92. When St. Paul's Cathedral in London burnt in 1666,

  93. Wren was asked to rebuild it.

  94. It was too destroyed, so he built a brand new one.

  95. And all the newspapers,

  96. if you read the newspapers from their time,

  97. all of them said,

  98. this cathedral is awful.

  99. I've been to St. Paul's Cathedral.

  100. It's not awful at all.

  101. It's the second largest dome in the world.

  102. It's a fabulous cathedral.

  103. Well, in 1666,

  104. what it meant is that

  105. this cathedral is awful

  106. means it fills you with awe.

  107. That is, when you go in,

  108. you are in this atmosphere,

  109. this environment,

  110. that you are filled with awe.

  111. So it is awful in that sense,

  112. not awful,

  113. terrible in our use of English 400 years later.

  114. I want to ask you,

  115. have you ever experienced

  116. an experience that fills you with awe?

  117. Maybe you have,

  118. maybe you haven't.

  119. I don't know.

  120. I don't know you well enough to know.

  121. But I'll share with you two of them.

  122. I was,

  123. 20 years ago,

  124. I was visiting Italy,

  125. and we were in Venice,

  126. and it was Sunday.

  127. So I could have gone to a museum,

  128. because after all,

  129. I was a tourist visiting Italy,

  130. but I thought,

  131. this is Sunday,

  132. at least I should go and worship God,

  133. and I may not get anything

  134. out of the sermon,

  135. if it's in Italian,

  136. or anything from the theology

  137. of the setting of that church,

  138. but nevertheless,

  139. I can still go and talk to the Lord.

  140. At least pray the Lord's Prayer in English,

  141. or Arabic.

  142. So I went to San Marcos,

  143. Cathid Basilica.

  144. I don't know what happened,

  145. but I was there about one minute,

  146. and I had,

  147. it was jam-packed,

  148. there were no more chairs,

  149. I was standing at the very, very back,

  150. and this overwhelming feeling came over me.

  151. I want to assure you,

  152. I am not a touchy-feely,

  153. gushy-mushy kind of a person.

  154. I am an analytic philosopher,

  155. I am a disciple of David Hume,

  156. I doubt everything,

  157. I hardly believe anything,

  158. I am not even sure

  159. that you really exist out there.

  160. For all I know,

  161. I may be hallucinating

  162. in a psychiatric ward,

  163. pretending to be a preacher.

  164. But I am not a gooey,

  165. gushy-mushy,

  166. and yet this overpowering feeling

  167. came upon me.

  168. I have not experienced it

  169. that many times in life.

  170. Before you know it,

  171. I was on my knees.

  172. I felt this need

  173. to get on my knees.

  174. A couple seconds later,

  175. I was completely flat,

  176. prostrate.

  177. I know that because I know

  178. the Hebrew verb,

  179. hishtahwe,

  180. and I know that it's used

  181. in scriptures,

  182. hishtahwe,

  183. to prostrate before God.

  184. So I know it's biblical.

  185. And as I was there,

  186. see,

  187. I thought I was going there

  188. really,

  189. you know,

  190. to really tour

  191. and see the church

  192. and maybe pray on the side.

  193. What I had no idea

  194. was that that was going

  195. to be an experience

  196. of encountering God.

  197. I was flat on my face

  198. on the floor

  199. and I couldn't get up.

  200. One of the ministers

  201. came to me and said,

  202. are you okay?

  203. They thought maybe I fainted

  204. or, you know,

  205. had a heart attack

  206. or something.

  207. I said, no, no,

  208. I'm fine.

  209. But that was

  210. an overwhelming sense

  211. of awe,

  212. fear,

  213. yare in Hebrew.

  214. Nine years later,

  215. not nine years later,

  216. but nine years ago,

  217. I was in Washington, D.C.

  218. and I was at a church

  219. because it was Easter

  220. and I was with my family.

  221. And as we were sitting there,

  222. I found myself sobbing,

  223. crying so strongly.

  224. And that's just not me,

  225. you know, I mean.

  226. And I had this overwhelming sense

  227. of the presence of God.

  228. God was doing work in my life

  229. and I had not planned on it.

  230. I would have asked him

  231. to do it at this church.

  232. After all, this is my home church

  233. and I would feel like it's at home.

  234. But it was in Washington, D.C.

  235. Can anything good

  236. come out of Washington?

  237. Well, some religious experiences can.

  238. But that is a good fear

  239. of the Lord.

  240. A sense of awe,

  241. a sense of respect.

  242. But there are other kinds of fears.

  243. If you really want to torture me,

  244. promise me not to do it

  245. because here I'm being vulnerable to you.

  246. I'm giving you a chance to torture me

  247. if you really want to.

  248. The way to torture me

  249. is to take me to Willis Tower

  250. and make me go to the top

  251. and step on the extension

  252. where the floor is glass.

  253. I would have the worst anxiety reaction

  254. you'll see in your life.

  255. I'd probably have a heart attack

  256. and die right there and then.

  257. Something tells me

  258. that the minute I step on that,

  259. it's going to open up

  260. and I'm going to fall down

  261. and kill myself

  262. against the pavement.

  263. Now, I've studied enough physics.

  264. I mean, I am well educated.

  265. I have gone to college.

  266. I know something about physics.

  267. I know walls don't open up

  268. and swallow.

  269. But that would give me,

  270. you know,

  271. you couldn't pay me

  272. to go through that experience.

  273. That would be a horrible sense of fear.

  274. I remember as a kid,

  275. I don't know why.

  276. I mean, I must have been stupid.

  277. But I went and saw the movie Dracula

  278. and I was seven years old.

  279. I went with my cousin

  280. and he was going to go

  281. and I wasn't going to look like a coward.

  282. So I thought,

  283. I'll go with him.

  284. And so several of us,

  285. my cousin,

  286. my best cousin

  287. and several of us friends

  288. went to see the movie Dracula

  289. and it was terrifying

  290. for a seven-year-old.

  291. I came back home.

  292. I went to sleep,

  293. had a nightmare.

  294. And in my great fear,

  295. I woke up

  296. and I thought

  297. I saw Dracula coming at me.

  298. So I stretched my hand

  299. to grab the cross

  300. to stop him

  301. and there was no cross.

  302. And I gave a scream

  303. that scared half of my family.

  304. They all rushed

  305. to see what's going on.

  306. That is fear.

  307. There are movie slashers

  308. that focus on fear.

  309. Alien,

  310. if you've seen the first one.

  311. But there is

  312. a special kind of fear

  313. that I want us

  314. to think about

  315. this morning.

  316. A very important

  317. kind of a fear.

  318. that's going to be

  319. to do it.

  320. So,

  321. please turn in your Bibles

  322. to Hebrews,

  323. the epistle to the Hebrews

  324. after the Paul's,

  325. after the Pauline epistles,

  326. then we have Hebrews.

  327. If you get to James,

  328. you've got too far.

  329. If you get to Peter,

  330. you've got to,

  331. first,

  332. second Peter,

  333. you've got too far.

  334. It's Hebrews.

  335. Hebrews.

  336. And Hebrews

  337. is asking

  338. a simple question.

  339. Was it necessary

  340. for Jesus

  341. to be born?

  342. Why didn't God

  343. just open the heavens

  344. and announce,

  345. vocally,

  346. you are forgiven

  347. and forgive us?

  348. Why didn't he do it

  349. like that?

  350. Why did he send Jesus?

  351. Couldn't he have

  352. come up with other ways

  353. of saving us?

  354. And the answer is that,

  355. of course,

  356. he could have,

  357. but he chose this one

  358. for this reason.

  359. So,

  360. the author of Hebrews

  361. is trying to answer

  362. the question,

  363. was it necessary

  364. for Jesus

  365. to be born?

  366. And of course,

  367. it was necessary.

  368. So,

  369. let's look at

  370. Hebrews chapter 2,

    Hebrews 2:14

  371. verse 14

  372. to see why

  373. it was necessary

  374. for Jesus

  375. and then we'll look

  376. at verse 15.

  377. So,

  378. Hebrews 2,

  379. 14 and 15.

  380. Since the children

  381. have flesh and blood,

  382. he,

  383. Jesus,

  384. too,

  385. shared in their humanity

  386. so that by his death

  387. he might destroy him

  388. who holds

  389. the power of death.

  390. Jesus became human

  391. in order to destroy death.

  392. That in his dying

  393. and in his resurrection

  394. he would do that.

  395. He couldn't have done that

  396. by simply announcing

  397. you are forgiven.

  398. And so,

  399. in order to destroy him

  400. who holds

  401. the power of death.

  402. And in case you don't know

  403. who that is,

  404. that is the devil.

  405. But look at verse 15

  406. carefully.

  407. And not only to destroy him

  408. who had the power of death,

  409. and to free

  410. those

  411. who all their lives

  412. were held

  413. in slavery

  414. by their fear

  415. of death.

  416. Satan uses

  417. fear

  418. to run

  419. his kingdom.

  420. fear

  421. and

  422. Satan's

  423. primary

  424. tool

  425. is fear

  426. and the ultimate

  427. fear

  428. is death.

  429. But I'm sure

  430. there are other fears

  431. between now

  432. and death.

  433. So,

  434. Satan

  435. uses

  436. fear

  437. to

  438. terrify us

  439. and to hold us

  440. as slaves.

  441. Fear

  442. results,

  443. fear of death

  444. results

  445. in slavery.

  446. Okay.

  447. So,

  448. if you're hungry,

  449. how would you solve

  450. that problem?

  451. Well,

  452. you eat.

  453. If you're naked,

  454. how would you solve

  455. that problem?

  456. You get dressed.

  457. If you are cold,

  458. how would you solve

  459. that problem?

  460. Put on a sweater.

  461. If you can't see

  462. very well,

  463. how do you solve

  464. that problem?

  465. Well,

  466. you buy eyeglasses.

  467. So,

  468. there are

  469. solutions

  470. to problems.

  471. What

  472. is the solution

  473. to the problem

  474. of the,

  475. of fear

  476. of death

  477. that results

  478. in slavery?

  479. If I am

  480. feeling afraid,

  481. what is God

  482. going to do

  483. to deliver me

  484. from that fear?

  485. Maybe give me

  486. four green berets,

  487. you know,

  488. as bodyguard.

  489. and then I'll

  490. think,

  491. well,

  492. you know,

  493. they can't take me

  494. out,

  495. they'll have to

  496. go through them.

  497. Or,

  498. you know,

  499. give me a car

  500. with,

  501. you know,

  502. made out of iron

  503. and thick glass.

  504. Not like the one

  505. convertible

  506. in which Kennedy

  507. was shot.

  508. The Lincoln.

  509. Maybe give me

  510. that kind of a car,

  511. a tank.

  512. Or,

  513. maybe live

  514. in a castle

  515. that can't be

  516. conquered.

  517. What is God's

  518. solution

  519. to

  520. slavery

  521. that comes

  522. from the fear

  523. of death?

  524. You are going

  525. to be surprised.

  526. Where you're

  527. taking notes,

  528. jot what you think

  529. you answer

  530. and we'll check.

  531. The answer

  532. to that

  533. is a very,

  534. very important

  535. verse.

  536. The answer

  537. to that

  538. is in Romans 8.

  539. Look at

  540. Romans 8

    Romans 8:15

  541. verse 15.

  542. If we are saved,

  543. when we are saved

  544. at that time,

  545. Romans 8

  546. 15.

  547. Please look at

  548. Romans 8

  549. 15.

  550. You

  551. did not

  552. receive

  553. a spirit

  554. that makes

  555. you a slave

  556. again

  557. to fear.

  558. Do you notice

  559. that he's using

  560. the same vocabulary

  561. as in Hebrews?

  562. Slavery,

  563. fear.

  564. But he's saying

  565. we aren't

  566. like that.

  567. you did

  568. you did

  569. not

  570. receive a

  571. spirit

  572. that makes

  573. you a

  574. slave

  575. again to

  576. fear,

  577. but you

  578. received

  579. the spirit

  580. of sonship

  581. or the

  582. spirit

  583. of adoption

  584. and by

  585. him

  586. we cry out

  587. Abba

  588. Father.

  589. God's

  590. solution

  591. to our

  592. fear of

  593. death

  594. and the

  595. slavery that

  596. comes with it

  597. is to assure

  598. us that

  599. we are

  600. adopted

  601. by God

  602. and if

  603. we are

  604. adopted

  605. by God

  606. then it

  607. is the

  608. Holy Spirit

  609. who cries

  610. within us

  611. Abba

  612. Father.

  613. I'll get

  614. back to

  615. Abba

  616. Father in

  617. just a

  618. second

  619. but I

  620. want to

  621. focus on

  622. something else

  623. before we

  624. get to

  625. Abba

  626. Father.

  627. So

  628. we are

  629. adopted

  630. by God.

  631. You did

  632. not receive

  633. a spirit

  634. that makes

  635. you slave

  636. again to

  637. fear but

  638. you received

  639. the spirit

  640. of sonship

  641. or the

  642. spirit of

  643. adoption.

  644. Well

  645. of all

  646. the things

  647. that we

  648. have in

  649. archaeology

  650. we happen

  651. to have

  652. a lot

  653. of material

  654. about

  655. adoption.

  656. Some of

  657. the most

  658. fascinating

  659. things to

  660. read in

  661. archaeology

  662. of the

  663. Old

  664. Testament

  665. is

  666. Nuzu

  667. material

  668. or

  669. Nuzi

  670. material.

  671. Please

  672. don't

  673. misunderstand

  674. me.

  675. I didn't

  676. say Nazi.

  677. Nazi are

  678. bad Germans

  679. in World

  680. War II.

  681. This is

  682. not

  683. Germans.

  684. This is

  685. much

  686. earlier.

  687. At least

  688. 2,400

  689. years before

  690. Germans.

  691. This is

  692. Nuzi

  693. material.

  694. Nuzu

  695. material.

  696. And all

  697. of that

  698. material

  699. deals

  700. with

  701. adoption

  702. and

  703. inheritance.

  704. It

  705. raises

  706. some

  707. interesting

  708. question.

  709. If I

  710. don't

  711. have a

  712. son

  713. and I

  714. am

  715. rich

  716. and I

  717. want

  718. to

  719. leave

  720. this

  721. wealth

  722. to

  723. somebody,

  724. who

  725. do I

  726. leave

  727. it

  728. to?

  729. And the

  730. answer is

  731. to your

  732. adopted

  733. son.

  734. Have you

  735. read that

  736. anywhere in

  737. the Old

  738. Testament?

  739. Like

  740. Genesis 15,

  741. Abraham

  742. wanting to

  743. adopt

  744. Eliezer?

  745. But it

  746. raises

  747. another

  748. issue.

  749. Suppose

  750. I

  751. adopt

  752. a son

  753. and then

  754. my daughter

  755. marries

  756. a

  757. guy,

  758. her

  759. husband,

  760. is

  761. my

  762. adopted

  763. son

  764. and my

  765. son-in-law

  766. the same?

  767. who

  768. would

  769. inherit

  770. me?

  771. My

  772. adopted

  773. son

  774. or my

  775. son-in-law?

  776. Adopted

  777. son.

  778. There

  779. are other

  780. issues.

  781. If I

  782. adopt

  783. a son

  784. because

  785. if I

  786. adopt

  787. a son

  788. because I

  789. don't have

  790. a son

  791. and I

  792. want

  793. somebody

  794. to take

  795. care of

  796. me

  797. in my

  798. old age

  799. etc.

  800. etc.

  801. And

  802. then

  803. as

  804. happened

  805. to my

  806. own

  807. very

  808. best

  809. friend

  810. who

  811. for

  812. 10

  813. years

  814. couldn't

  815. have

  816. any

  817. children

  818. and

  819. then

  820. they

  821. adopted

  822. a

  823. son

  824. and

  825. a

  826. year

  827. later

  828. she

  829. became

  830. pregnant

  831. and

  832. they

  833. ended

  834. up

  835. with

  836. two

  837. sons.

  838. One

  839. adopted

  840. one

  841. natural

  842. born.

  843. Of

  844. those

  845. two

  846. who

  847. is

  848. more

  849. important

  850. legally?

  851. And

  852. the

  853. answer

  854. is

  855. the

  856. natural

  857. son

  858. does

  859. not

  860. nullify

  861. the

  862. adopted

  863. son.

  864. They

  865. are

  866. equal.

  867. We

  868. know

  869. a lot

  870. about

  871. adoption

  872. customs

  873. in

  874. Paul's

  875. own

  876. age.

  877. So when

  878. we read

  879. the news

  880. material,

  881. when I

  882. read it

  883. I think

  884. oh I'm

  885. reading

  886. just

  887. Genesis.

  888. Everything

  889. I see

  890. in Genesis

  891. I see

  892. in news

  893. material.

  894. But we

  895. also know

  896. something

  897. about

  898. adoption

  899. laws

  900. in Roman

  901. empire.

  902. There

  903. are

  904. two

  905. stages.

  906. The

  907. first

  908. stage

  909. is to

  910. cut off

  911. completely

  912. your

  913. relationship

  914. with the

  915. past.

  916. You

  917. are

  918. completely

  919. set

  920. free

  921. from

  922. your

  923. past.

  924. So

  925. even

  926. if you

  927. had

  928. debts

  929. you're

  930. free

  931. from

  932. your

  933. debts.

  934. You

  935. don't

  936. have

  937. to

  938. pay

  939. because

  940. now

  941. you

  942. have

  943. been

  944. adopted

  945. and

  946. you're

  947. a

  948. different

  949. person.

  950. You're

  951. not

  952. that

  953. same

  954. person.

  955. You

  956. may

  957. have

  958. the

  959. same

  960. name.

  961. You

  962. can

  963. even

  964. change

  965. your

  966. name

  967. if

  968. you

  969. want

  970. to.

  971. But

  972. you

  973. are

  974. completely

  975. set

  976. free

  977. from

  978. that

  979. and

  980. then

  981. you

  982. become

  983. a

  984. new

  985. person

  986. completely.

  987. So

  988. suppose

  989. a

  990. master

  991. adopts

  992. a

  993. son

  994. in

  995. a

  996. Roman

  997. culture

  998. but

  999. the

  1000. master

  1001. also

  1002. has

  1003. a

  1004. daughter.

  1005. The

  1006. son

  1007. and

  1008. the

  1009. daughter

  1010. are

  1011. not

  1012. in

  1013. any

  1014. way

  1015. related

  1016. blood

  1017. wise.

  1018. one

  1019. is

  1020. adopted

  1021. completely

  1022. from a

  1023. different

  1024. family

  1025. altogether

  1026. and

  1027. one

  1028. is

  1029. his

  1030. daughter.

  1031. Can

  1032. the

  1033. brother

  1034. and

  1035. the

  1036. sister

  1037. marry

  1038. because

  1039. they

  1040. don't

  1041. have

  1042. any

  1043. blood

  1044. ties

  1045. whatsoever?

  1046. The

  1047. answer

  1048. is

  1049. no.

  1050. They

  1051. are

  1052. brothers

  1053. and

  1054. sisters.

  1055. But

  1056. you

  1057. say,

  1058. but

  1059. we

  1060. are

  1061. not.

  1062. We

  1063. don't

  1064. have

  1065. the

  1066. same

  1067. parents.

  1068. You

  1069. have

  1070. now

  1071. become

  1072. a

  1073. part

  1074. of

  1075. the

  1076. new

  1077. family.

  1078. You

  1079. are

  1080. adopted.

  1081. And

  1082. what

  1083. is

  1084. happening

  1085. now

  1086. is

  1087. that

  1088. adopted

  1089. by

  1090. God.

  1091. And

  1092. that's

  1093. why

  1094. we

  1095. can

  1096. say

  1097. so

  1098. our

  1099. past

  1100. is

  1101. cut off.

  1102. It's

  1103. finished.

  1104. It's

  1105. over.

  1106. It

  1107. can't

  1108. hold

  1109. itself

  1110. against

  1111. us

  1112. anymore.

  1113. So

  1114. we

  1115. are

  1116. cut

  1117. off

  1118. from

  1119. the

  1120. past

  1121. and

  1122. this

  1123. is

  1124. a

  1125. brand

  1126. new

  1127. relationship

  1128. and

  1129. we

  1130. are

  1131. heirs.

  1132. Co-heirs

  1133. with

  1134. Christ

  1135. as

  1136. he

  1137. says.

  1138. But

  1139. a couple

  1140. things I

  1141. want you

  1142. to

  1143. notice

  1144. in

  1145. relationship

  1146. to

  1147. this

  1148. adoption

  1149. has

  1150. ramifications.

  1151. Look

  1152. at

  1153. verse

  1154. in

  1155. Romans

  1156. 8.

  1157. Look

  1158. at

  1159. Romans

  1160. 8.

  1161. 34.

  1162. Look

  1163. at

  1164. Romans

  1165. 8.

  1166. 34.

  1167. And

  1168. now

  1169. you

  1170. can

  1171. see

  1172. how

  1173. this

  1174. is

  1175. all

  1176. tied

  1177. up

  1178. to

  1179. prayer.

  1180. So

  1181. in

  1182. 8.

  1183. 34

  1184. Paul

  1185. asks

  1186. the

  1187. question

  1188. who

  1189. is

  1190. he

  1191. that

  1192. condemns?

  1193. more

  1194. than

  1195. that

  1196. who

  1197. is

  1198. he

  1199. that

  1200. condemns?

  1201. Christ

  1202. Jesus

  1203. who

  1204. died

  1205. more

  1206. than

  1207. that

  1208. who

  1209. was

  1210. raised

  1211. to

  1212. life

  1213. is

  1214. at

  1215. the

  1216. right

  1217. hand

  1218. of

  1219. God

  1220. and

  1221. he

  1222. is

  1223. also

  1224. interceding

  1225. for

  1226. us.

  1227. So

  1228. Jesus

  1229. intercedes

  1230. for

  1231. us

  1232. at

  1233. the

  1234. right

  1235. hand

  1236. of

  1237. the

  1238. father.

  1239. Jesus

  1240. is

  1241. praying

  1242. for

  1243. us.

  1244. So

  1245. whatever

  1246. else

  1247. my

  1248. prayer

  1249. life

  1250. is

  1251. like

  1252. Jesus

  1253. at

  1254. least

  1255. I

  1256. know

  1257. Jesus

  1258. is

  1259. praying

  1260. for

  1261. me.

  1262. Jesus

  1263. is

  1264. interceding

  1265. for

  1266. me.

  1267. I

  1268. would

  1269. have

  1270. thought

  1271. that's

  1272. a great

  1273. answer.

  1274. I

  1275. got

  1276. even

  1277. better

  1278. answer

  1279. than

  1280. that.

  1281. I

  1282. mean

  1283. this

  1284. is

  1285. not

  1286. just

  1287. the

  1288. icing.

  1289. This

  1290. is

  1291. the

  1292. cherry

  1293. on top

  1294. of

  1295. the

  1296. icing.

  1297. Look

  1298. at

  1299. Romans

  1300. 8

  1301. 26.

  1302. In

  1303. the

  1304. same

  1305. way

  1306. 8

  1307. 26

  1308. in

  1309. the

  1310. same

  1311. way

  1312. the

  1313. spirit

  1314. helps

  1315. us

  1316. in

  1317. our

  1318. weakness

  1319. we

  1320. don't

  1321. know

  1322. what

  1323. we

  1324. ought

  1325. to

  1326. pray

  1327. for

  1328. but

  1329. the

  1330. spirit

  1331. himself

  1332. intercedes

  1333. for

  1334. us.

  1335. So

  1336. who

  1337. is

  1338. interceding

  1339. for

  1340. us?

  1341. Jesus

  1342. and

  1343. as

  1344. if

  1345. that

  1346. is

  1347. not

  1348. enough

  1349. and

  1350. the

  1351. holy

  1352. spirit

  1353. Jesus

  1354. at

  1355. the

  1356. right

  1357. hand

  1358. of

  1359. the

  1360. father

  1361. the

  1362. holy

  1363. spirit

  1364. now.

  1365. That's

  1366. a good

  1367. team.

  1368. Great

  1369. team.

  1370. Two

  1371. aces.

  1372. The

  1373. holy

  1374. spirit

  1375. intercedes

  1376. for us

  1377. and

  1378. one

  1379. of the

  1380. things

  1381. he

  1382. does

  1383. is

  1384. that

  1385. he

  1386. enables

  1387. us

  1388. to

  1389. say

  1390. Abba

  1391. father.

  1392. He

  1393. enables

  1394. us

  1395. to

  1396. understand

  1397. that

  1398. we

  1399. are

  1400. now

  1401. in

  1402. a

  1403. new

  1404. family

  1405. with

  1406. no

  1407. ties

  1408. to

  1409. the

  1410. past

  1411. that

  1412. this

  1413. is

  1414. brand

  1415. new

  1416. and

  1417. we

  1418. belong

  1419. to

  1420. God

  1421. and

  1422. his

  1423. family.

  1424. So

  1425. that

  1426. is

  1427. one

  1428. thing.

  1429. The

  1430. other

  1431. thing

  1432. I

  1433. wanted

  1434. you

  1435. to

  1436. notice

  1437. is

  1438. look

  1439. at

  1440. verse

  1441. 26

  1442. again.

  1443. Romans

  1444. 8

  1445. 26

  1446. In the

  1447. same

  1448. way

  1449. the

  1450. spirit

  1451. helps

  1452. us

  1453. in

  1454. our

  1455. weaknesses

  1456. we

  1457. do

  1458. not

  1459. know

  1460. what

  1461. we

  1462. ought

  1463. to

  1464. pray

  1465. but

  1466. the

  1467. spirit

  1468. himself

  1469. intercedes

  1470. for us

  1471. with

  1472. groans

  1473. with

  1474. groans

  1475. too

  1476. deep

  1477. for

  1478. words.

  1479. The

  1480. Greek

  1481. is

  1482. too

  1483. deep

  1484. for

  1485. words.

  1486. So

  1487. the

  1488. Holy

  1489. Spirit

  1490. intercedes

  1491. for

  1492. us

  1493. with

  1494. groans

  1495. that

  1496. are

  1497. too

  1498. deep

  1499. for

  1500. words.

  1501. Take

  1502. a look

  1503. at

  1504. verse

  1505. 23.

  1506. Take

  1507. a look

  1508. at

  1509. verse

  1510. 23.

  1511. Not

  1512. only

  1513. so

  1514. but

  1515. we

  1516. ourselves

  1517. who

  1518. have

  1519. the

  1520. first

  1521. foot

  1522. of

  1523. the

  1524. spirit

  1525. groan

  1526. inwardly.

  1527. So

  1528. who

  1529. is

  1530. groaning?

  1531. We

  1532. are

  1533. groaning

  1534. but

  1535. who

  1536. else?

  1537. The

  1538. Holy

  1539. Spirit

  1540. is

  1541. groaning

  1542. with

  1543. us.

  1544. So

  1545. when

  1546. we

  1547. don't

  1548. know

  1549. how

  1550. to

  1551. pray

  1552. the

  1553. Holy

  1554. Spirit

  1555. prays

  1556. for

  1557. us

  1558. in

  1559. things

  1560. that

  1561. are

  1562. too

  1563. deep

  1564. for

  1565. words.

  1566. It's

  1567. difficult

  1568. to

  1569. know

  1570. what

  1571. he

  1572. really

  1573. means

  1574. by

  1575. too

  1576. deep

  1577. for

  1578. words.

  1579. It

  1580. could

  1581. mean

  1582. that

  1583. he

  1584. is

  1585. groaning

  1586. to

  1587. us

  1588. in

  1589. something

  1590. other

  1591. than

  1592. verbal

  1593. language.

  1594. So

  1595. he's

  1596. not

  1597. using

  1598. words.

  1599. He

  1600. may

  1601. be

  1602. using

  1603. sounds

  1604. like

  1605. oh

  1606. or

  1607. whatever.

  1608. or

  1609. he

  1610. is

  1611. saying

  1612. that

  1613. he

  1614. is

  1615. groaning

  1616. for

  1617. us

  1618. with

  1619. deep

  1620. words

  1621. but

  1622. we're

  1623. not

  1624. sure.

  1625. We don't

  1626. know whether

  1627. to pray

  1628. this way

  1629. or this

  1630. way.

  1631. We don't

  1632. know whether

  1633. to ask

  1634. for this

  1635. or that.

  1636. But he

  1637. knows

  1638. and he

  1639. prays

  1640. for us

  1641. with words

  1642. that are

  1643. too deep

  1644. for us

  1645. but not

  1646. too deep

  1647. for him.

  1648. so the

  1649. spirit

  1650. intercedes

  1651. for us

  1652. the spirit

  1653. assures

  1654. us

  1655. that we

  1656. are God's

  1657. children

  1658. the spirit

  1659. prays

  1660. for us

  1661. with groaning

  1662. that are

  1663. too deep

  1664. for words.

  1665. But that's

  1666. not all.

  1667. Just one

  1668. more thing

  1669. I want

  1670. you to

  1671. notice.

  1672. Look at

  1673. verse

  1674. 15

  1675. again.

  1676. By

  1677. him

  1678. we

  1679. cry

  1680. out

  1681. it

  1682. is not

  1683. chairman

  1684. Mao

  1685. it's not

  1686. captain

  1687. America

  1688. it's not

  1689. you know

  1690. manager

  1691. of this

  1692. company

  1693. we cry

  1694. out

  1695. with

  1696. Abba

  1697. father.

  1698. Why is

  1699. that

  1700. important?

  1701. This

  1702. turns out

  1703. to be

  1704. extremely

  1705. important

  1706. perhaps

  1707. the most

  1708. important

  1709. thing

  1710. of

  1711. everything

  1712. I'm

  1713. saying

  1714. this

  1715. morning.

  1716. The

  1717. reason

  1718. for

  1719. that

  1720. is

  1721. that

  1722. there

  1723. is

  1724. a

  1725. scholar

  1726. by

  1727. the

  1728. name

  1729. of

  1730. Joachim

  1731. Yeremias

  1732. who is

  1733. an expert

  1734. on

  1735. Aramaic.

  1736. I wish

  1737. he laid

  1738. hands on

  1739. me before

  1740. he passed

  1741. away and

  1742. passed all

  1743. the Aramaic

  1744. to me.

  1745. No he

  1746. didn't so

  1747. now I

  1748. have to

  1749. learn it

  1750. rather than

  1751. just

  1752. inherit it.

  1753. Yeremias

  1754. studied

  1755. every

  1756. written

  1757. prayer

  1758. between

  1759. Malachi

  1760. and

  1761. Matthew.

  1762. Every

  1763. prayer

  1764. that

  1765. was

  1766. recorded

  1767. anybody

  1768. who

  1769. wrote

  1770. down

  1771. a

  1772. prayer

  1773. he

  1774. studied

  1775. it

  1776. and

  1777. those

  1778. prayers

  1779. were

  1780. in

  1781. Aramaic

  1782. and

  1783. to

  1784. his

  1785. amazement

  1786. he

  1787. discovered

  1788. two

  1789. things

  1790. number

  1791. one

  1792. all

  1793. the

  1794. prayers

  1795. without

  1796. a

  1797. single

  1798. not

  1799. even

  1800. one

  1801. single

  1802. exception

  1803. all

  1804. the

  1805. prayers

  1806. began

  1807. formally

  1808. and

  1809. collectively

  1810. so they

  1811. all began

  1812. with

  1813. our

  1814. not

  1815. my

  1816. not

  1817. your

  1818. not

  1819. his

  1820. they

  1821. all

  1822. began

  1823. with

  1824. our

  1825. and

  1826. they

  1827. all

  1828. began

  1829. with

  1830. the

  1831. word

  1832. father

  1833. formally

  1834. our

  1835. father

  1836. let

  1837. me

  1838. ask you

  1839. a question

  1840. so you

  1841. can feel

  1842. good about

  1843. yourself

  1844. where have

  1845. you seen

  1846. that

  1847. before

  1848. give

  1849. yourself

  1850. a good

  1851. mark

  1852. our

  1853. father

  1854. all

  1855. the

  1856. prayers

  1857. 400

  1858. years

  1859. of

  1860. prayers

  1861. all

  1862. of

  1863. them

  1864. begin

  1865. with

  1866. our

  1867. father

  1868. plural

  1869. formal

  1870. then

  1871. comes

  1872. Jesus

  1873. and

  1874. he

  1875. decides

  1876. to do

  1877. something

  1878. else

  1879. he and

  1880. I are

  1881. going to

  1882. have to

  1883. talk

  1884. about

  1885. grammar

  1886. here

  1887. look at

  1888. John

    John 20:17

  1889. chapter

  1890. 20

  1891. verse

  1892. 17

  1893. in

  1894. the

  1895. gospel

  1896. of

  1897. John

    John 20:17

  1898. chapter

  1899. 20

  1900. verse

  1901. 17

  1902. after

  1903. the

  1904. resurrection

  1905. Mary

  1906. Magdalene

  1907. goes to

  1908. the tomb

  1909. sees

  1910. Jesus

  1911. and she

  1912. is so

  1913. excited

  1914. she is

  1915. clinging

  1916. to him

  1917. and he

  1918. says to

  1919. her

  1920. don't

  1921. cling

  1922. to me

  1923. or don't

  1924. hold

  1925. on

  1926. to

  1927. me

  1928. I

  1929. have

  1930. not

  1931. yet

  1932. returned

  1933. to

  1934. the

  1935. father

  1936. go

  1937. instead

  1938. to

  1939. my

  1940. brothers

  1941. and

  1942. tell

  1943. them

  1944. I

  1945. am

  1946. returning

  1947. to

  1948. my

  1949. father

  1950. and

  1951. to

  1952. your

  1953. father

  1954. to

  1955. my

  1956. God

  1957. and

  1958. to

  1959. your

  1960. God

  1961. for

  1962. those

  1963. who

  1964. teach

  1965. English

  1966. what would

  1967. be a

  1968. simpler

  1969. way of

  1970. saying

  1971. that

  1972. I

  1973. am

  1974. going

  1975. to

  1976. our

  1977. father

  1978. and

  1979. our

  1980. God

  1981. but

  1982. he

  1983. doesn't

  1984. say

  1985. that

  1986. he

  1987. says

  1988. my

  1989. father

  1990. and

  1991. your

  1992. father

  1993. my

  1994. God

  1995. and

  1996. your

  1997. God

  1998. he

  1999. does

  2000. not

  2001. include

  2002. himself

  2003. in the

  2004. same

  2005. group

  2006. as

  2007. the

  2008. disciples

  2009. why

  2010. is

  2011. that

  2012. because

  2013. the

  2014. father

  2015. is

  2016. his

  2017. father

  2018. in a

  2019. different

  2020. way

  2021. than

  2022. he

  2023. is

  2024. our

  2025. father

  2026. we

  2027. are

  2028. adopted

  2029. Jesus

  2030. is

  2031. not

  2032. adopted

  2033. so

  2034. Jesus

  2035. doesn't

  2036. put

  2037. himself

  2038. he's

  2039. not

  2040. just

  2041. one

  2042. of

  2043. us

  2044. he's

  2045. not

  2046. just

  2047. one

  2048. of

  2049. us

  2050. and

  2051. he

  2052. wants

  2053. to

  2054. make

  2055. it

  2056. clear

  2057. that

  2058. they

  2059. don't

  2060. think

  2061. he's

  2062. just

  2063. a

  2064. member

  2065. of

  2066. the

  2067. team

  2068. he is

  2069. not

  2070. he's

  2071. the

  2072. lord

  2073. of

  2074. the

  2075. team

  2076. Jesus

  2077. in the

  2078. gospels

  2079. starts

  2080. to

  2081. pray

  2082. Abba

  2083. singular

  2084. not

  2085. our

  2086. father

  2087. but

  2088. my

  2089. father

  2090. and

  2091. the

  2092. other

  2093. interesting

  2094. thing

  2095. is

  2096. that

  2097. rather

  2098. than

  2099. praying

  2100. our

  2101. father

  2102. he

  2103. starts

  2104. to

  2105. pray

  2106. my

  2107. dad

  2108. not

  2109. father

  2110. but

  2111. dad

  2112. if

  2113. one

  2114. of

  2115. my

  2116. students

  2117. call

  2118. me

  2119. dad

  2120. or

  2121. daddy

  2122. you

  2123. know

  2124. couple

  2125. slaps

  2126. I'm

  2127. not

  2128. anybody's

  2129. dad

  2130. certainly

  2131. not

  2132. my

  2133. students

  2134. but

  2135. Jesus

  2136. calls

  2137. the

  2138. father

  2139. dad

  2140. whom

  2141. do I

  2142. allow

  2143. to

  2144. call

  2145. me

  2146. dad

  2147. my

  2148. children

  2149. and

  2150. that's

  2151. all

  2152. because

  2153. there's

  2154. an

  2155. intimate

  2156. relationship

  2157. between

  2158. me

  2159. and

  2160. my

  2161. children

  2162. that

  2163. doesn't

  2164. exist

  2165. between

  2166. me

  2167. and

  2168. any

  2169. of

  2170. you

  2171. you're

  2172. my

  2173. brothers

  2174. and

  2175. sisters

  2176. in

  2177. Christ

  2178. yes

  2179. you

  2180. are

  2181. and

  2182. I

  2183. don't

  2184. mean

  2185. that

  2186. likely

  2187. you

  2188. really

  2189. are

  2190. but

  2191. it's

  2192. my

  2193. son

  2194. and

  2195. my

  2196. daughter

  2197. who

  2198. call

  2199. me

  2200. dad

  2201. my

  2202. son

  2203. teaches

  2204. at

  2205. one

  2206. of

  2207. the

  2208. public

  2209. schools

  2210. here

  2211. and

  2212. he

  2213. still

  2214. calls

  2215. me

  2216. dad

  2217. he

  2218. never

  2219. calls

  2220. me

  2221. Samir

  2222. he

  2223. always

  2224. calls

  2225. me

  2226. dad

  2227. my

  2228. daughter

  2229. never

  2230. calls

  2231. me

  2232. Samir

  2233. she

  2234. always

  2235. calls

  2236. me

  2237. dad

  2238. because

  2239. there

  2240. is

  2241. an

  2242. intimate

  2243. relationship

  2244. between

  2245. me

  2246. and

  2247. them

  2248. so

  2249. Jesus

  2250. Jesus

  2251. calls

  2252. the

  2253. father

  2254. my

  2255. dad

  2256. if

  2257. you

  2258. look

  2259. at

  2260. Romans

  2261. 8

  2262. the

  2263. spirit

  2264. calls

  2265. into

  2266. you

  2267. know

  2268. we

  2269. go

  2270. and

  2271. we

  2272. cry

  2273. out

  2274. Abba

  2275. not

  2276. Avino

  2277. the

  2278. formal

  2279. but

  2280. the

  2281. informal

  2282. Abba

  2283. what

  2284. the

  2285. Holy

  2286. Spirit

  2287. does

  2288. is

  2289. to

  2290. allow

  2291. us

  2292. to

  2293. have

  2294. the

  2295. same

  2296. kind

  2297. of

  2298. intimate

  2299. relationship

  2300. to some

  2301. extent

  2302. that

  2303. exists

  2304. between

  2305. Jesus

  2306. and the

  2307. father

  2308. and now

  2309. between

  2310. us

  2311. and the

  2312. father

  2313. so

  2314. I

  2315. can

  2316. call

  2317. my

  2318. heavenly

  2319. father

  2320. dad

  2321. that

  2322. is

  2323. the

  2324. advantage

  2325. of

  2326. the

  2327. father

  2328. giving

  2329. us

  2330. the

  2331. Holy

  2332. Spirit

  2333. if

  2334. you

  2335. human

  2336. fathers

  2337. who

  2338. are

  2339. evil

  2340. know

  2341. how

  2342. to

  2343. give

  2344. good

  2345. gifts

  2346. to

  2347. your

  2348. children

  2349. how

  2350. much

  2351. more

  2352. will

  2353. your

  2354. heavenly

  2355. father

  2356. give

  2357. the

  2358. Holy

  2359. Spirit

  2360. and

  2361. why

  2362. does

  2363. he

  2364. want

  2365. to

  2366. give

  2367. the

  2368. Holy

  2369. Spirit

  2370. well

  2371. for

  2372. lots

  2373. of

  2374. things

  2375. but

  2376. one

  2377. of

  2378. them

  2379. to

  2380. enable

  2381. us

  2382. to

  2383. pray

  2384. with

  2385. intimacy

  2386. to

  2387. enable

  2388. us

  2389. to

  2390. know

  2391. that

  2392. we

  2393. are

  2394. adopted

  2395. by

  2396. God

  2397. to

  2398. enable

  2399. us

  2400. to

  2401. know

  2402. we're

  2403. not

  2404. on

  2405. our

  2406. own

  2407. even

  2408. when

  2409. I'm

  2410. blundering

  2411. with

  2412. my

  2413. prayer

  2414. I

  2415. have

  2416. the

  2417. Holy

  2418. Spirit

  2419. interceding

  2420. for

  2421. me

  2422. and

  2423. I

  2424. have

  2425. Jesus

  2426. interceding

  2427. for

  2428. me

  2429. and

  2430. so

  2431. don't

  2432. worry

  2433. if you

  2434. just

  2435. can't

  2436. articulate

  2437. the

  2438. right

  2439. word

  2440. don't

  2441. say

  2442. well

  2443. I

  2444. don't

  2445. have

  2446. enough

  2447. good

  2448. enough

  2449. vocabulary

  2450. God

  2451. can

  2452. the

  2453. Lord

  2454. the

  2455. Holy

  2456. Spirit

  2457. can

  2458. intercede

  2459. with

  2460. us

  2461. with

  2462. groanings

  2463. too

  2464. deep

  2465. forward

  2466. so

  2467. what

  2468. I

  2469. do

  2470. what

  2471. I

  2472. do

  2473. and

  2474. that

  2475. really

  2476. does

  2477. happen

  2478. to

  2479. me

  2480. I

  2481. know

  2482. in

  2483. the

  2484. morning

  2485. I

  2486. usually

  2487. spend

  2488. five

  2489. minutes

  2490. praying

  2491. father

  2492. just

  2493. saying

  2494. father

  2495. because

  2496. I

  2497. want

  2498. to

  2499. talk

  2500. to

  2501. my

  2502. father

  2503. but

  2504. I

  2505. don't

  2506. know

  2507. what

  2508. to

  2509. talk

  2510. about

  2511. or

  2512. what's

  2513. important

  2514. and

  2515. things

  2516. like

  2517. that

  2518. so

  2519. I

  2520. start

  2521. praying

  2522. Abba

  2523. Abba

  2524. and

  2525. then

  2526. after

  2527. a

  2528. while

  2529. I

  2530. feel

  2531. that

  2532. I

  2533. am

  2534. in

  2535. his

  2536. presence

  2537. not

  2538. that

  2539. I

  2540. go

  2541. by

  2542. feelings

  2543. you

  2544. know

  2545. I

  2546. don't

  2547. go

  2548. by

  2549. feelings

  2550. and

  2551. I

  2552. understand

  2553. that

  2554. the

  2555. father

  2556. is

  2557. listening

  2558. to

  2559. the

  2560. intercessions

  2561. of

  2562. Jesus

  2563. and

  2564. to

  2565. the

  2566. intercessions

  2567. of

  2568. the

  2569. Holy

  2570. Spirit

  2571. and

  2572. that

  2573. the

  2574. father

  2575. hears

  2576. my

  2577. prayers

  2578. I

  2579. wanted

  2580. to

  2581. share

  2582. this

  2583. with

  2584. you

  2585. as

  2586. we

  2587. reflect

  2588. on

  2589. prayer

  2590. I

  2591. hope

  2592. this

  2593. will

  2594. be

  2595. helpful

  2596. so

  2597. you

  2598. don't

  2599. feel

  2600. like

  2601. you

  2602. have

  2603. to

  2604. articulate

  2605. just

  2606. the

  2607. exact

  2608. right

  2609. words

  2610. to

  2611. get

  2612. with

  2613. God

  2614. Amen
