  1. Morning, my name is Rick Aldrich. I'm another one of the elders here at Christ the King Church,

  2. and it's my privilege to bring the word for us this morning. We're going to be looking at

  3. Ephesians 4.32, as you see there in your bulletin, and as we're going to be dealing with what our

  4. forgiveness is in Christ. Forgiveness is a troubling doctrine for many, and one which Jesus

  5. spent a lot of time teaching on in the scriptures. It's a topic that all believers should endeavor

  6. to understand. John MacArthur said that nearly all his counseling is spent dealing with wrong

  7. thinking concerning forgiveness. A person might struggle because they don't understand their

  8. position before God that comes from forgiveness in Christ. They find it hard to believe that promise

  9. in 2 Corinthians 5.17, where it says, therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

  10. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. They still have some of their old habits.

  11. They have their old evil thoughts. There still remains from their old life that still haunt them,

  12. and too often they believe that practice instead of believing what the scripture says

  13. about their position in Christ. Also, a wrong understanding of biblical forgiveness can lead

  14. to a lot of unresolved interpersonal conflicts. Biblical forgiveness is more than mere words.

  15. It is what one who has been sinned against brings to the table to work with the one who is repenting

  16. at the work of reconciliation. There are many other wrong ideas, but these are just a couple examples.

  17. As I said, our framework today is going to come from Ephesians 4.32, where Paul says,

  18. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

  19. Today, I want to look at that end phrase. Today, how God has forgiven us in Christ.

  20. I want to remind us what forgiveness is and hopefully motivate us to want to be better forgivers.

  21. When you talk about forgiveness, most people think they know what you're talking about.

  22. And for the most part, they have a pretty good idea and would recognize true forgiveness if they saw it.

  23. The problem is that forgiveness has grown to encompass other things that are completely foreign to the scriptures.

  24. Psychology has taken the concept of forgiveness and corrupted it, and that perversion has found its way back into the church.

  25. They are trying to deal with the problems of sin and guilt, which do require forgiveness,

  26. but they are rejecting the very basis of forgiveness, the gospel.

  27. Objective truth has taken a backseat to emotions and left us with a convoluted mess.

  28. First, they do try to deal with guilt.

  29. People don't want to feel guilty, so they have to get rid of it somehow.

  30. One way is they try assigning it to someone other than the one who is truly responsible.

  31. So they will begin to look for something that happened in the past and use that as an excuse for the way that they are.

  32. Perhaps their parents or some other family member did something or maybe didn't do something.

  33. Or if that fails, they look at the culture or society around them and see if there might be something there that they can blame.

  34. Another common scapegoat is the church or religion.

  35. They would say that the church is regularly blamed for making people feel guilty,

  36. and it's the church's antiquated views on sin and morality that don't fit anymore and have afflicted this person with misplaced guilt.

  37. Some go so far as to call it abuse and become very hostile towards religion.

  38. Once they have a target to blame, they now have to deal with the anger issues that come from that.

  39. And that's where forgiveness comes in.

  40. But it's not the type of forgiveness the Bible talks about.

  41. It's more of a therapeutic process by which this person learns to just let it go and not be angry anymore.

  42. It's all about taking care of self with no thought towards whom they are angry with,

  43. and especially no thoughts concerning God.

  44. And this leads to other problems.

  45. Soon, sin is being renamed and reclassified as a sickness or a disease.

  46. This leads to other therapies and ultimately distorts people's view of true forgiveness.

  47. True forgiveness is no longer valued and even is deemed unnecessary.

  48. It is all about feelings.

  49. There is no pursuit of reconciliation.

  50. Forgiveness is a private, personal matter and allows people to avoid one another

  51. rather than deal with offenses in a godly manner.

  52. Another corruption arises in that people feel the need to forgive themselves.

  53. They have done something so wrong that they can't move forward.

  54. They just can't let it go.

  55. Why?

  56. Because they are not dealing rightly with the guilt.

  57. They can't make it right and they can't be sure that they won't do it again.

  58. They cannot bring about any change in themselves and they won't submit themselves to God,

  59. to the God who can change them and forgive their guilt.

  60. Another problem occurs when the distorted forgiveness is then projected back on God,

  61. redefining how people see God's forgiveness.

  62. One pastor even wrote recently that hell is full of forgiven people God loves,

  63. whom Jesus died for.

  64. Some even take it a step further and say that they may even need to forgive God.

  65. Their new definition of forgiveness involves ceasing to feel bitterness and resentment,

  66. sometimes causing them to deal with their anger at their circumstances in their life

  67. by forgiving God.

  68. Lewis Smedes justified this approach by saying,

  69. Would it bother God too much if we found our peace by forgiving him for the wrongs we suffer?

  70. What if we found a way of forgiving him without blaming him?

  71. A special sort of forgiving for a special sort of relationship.

  72. Would he mind?

  73. Well, the answer to that is yes, God would mind.

  74. God is holy and perfect and doesn't need any pardon.

  75. He is the standard for right and wrong.

  76. To say that God needs forgiveness is to imply that he is to blame, that he is wrong.

  77. And this is sinful, blasphemous thinking, but unfortunately becoming all too common.

  78. This distortion of forgiveness has led some to conclude that God has to forgive everyone automatically.

  79. And there are many in churches today who believe that they are Christians,

  80. even though they have never genuinely repented or believed,

  81. and it has hampered the church's ability to discern right from wrong and allows evil to flourish.

  82. But we must maintain the biblical concept of forgiveness.

  83. It is essential to proper understanding of who God is and what Jesus has accomplished on behalf of his people.

  84. And it's necessary because sin is a fatal problem for everyone.

  85. The Bible clearly teaches that all have sinned and are worthy of God's condemnation and his wrath leading to destruction.

  86. Beginning in Genesis chapter 3, when sin entered the world,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  87. as Adam disobeyed God and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,

  88. we see as history unfolds for us in Scripture that this truth is evident.

  89. Man left to himself will be wicked continually.

  90. And the judgment is clearly spelled out.

  91. The soul that sins must die.

  92. The wages of sin is death.

  93. But I don't want to leave it at just that.

  94. We are experts at minimizing our own sin.

  95. We see sin in others and are quick to judge.

  96. But when it comes to our own sin, we lose perspective.

  97. Jesus tries to remedy this in his teaching.

  98. In Matthew chapter 7, Jesus called the sin that we see in others a speck.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  99. And the sin we often overlook in ourselves a log.

  100. And then in Matthew 18, he gives a parable called the parable of the unforgiving servant.

  101. Jesus contrasts these two debts that are owed.

  102. One is so large, too big to ever be repaid.

  103. And one is comparatively small.

  104. And we are the ones with the huge debt.

  105. And those who sinned against us have the small debt.

  106. And this is the way Jesus wants us to see our sin.

  107. So the problem comes when we don't rightly see our sin

  108. and that we don't rightly see forgiveness either.

  109. But let's take a few moments to consider our sins more.

  110. First, we often judge our sin by degrees.

  111. You know, lying is bad, stealing is bad, but not as bad as murder.

  112. Then there are some sins which we barely even see as sins and even tolerate.

  113. And to a certain extent, we can see a little support for this in the Bible

  114. as sins are dealt with in different ways.

  115. Certain sins do carry more severe consequences.

  116. And while we would say there, all sins are practiced,

  117. sometimes we suggest otherwise.

  118. In his book, Respectable Sins, Jerry Bridges talks about certain sins

  119. that we neglect to deal with on a consistent basis.

  120. Things like anger and discontentment and worldliness.

  121. And some will tend to view their sins like this

  122. and conclude that they are not that big a sinner

  123. and, as such, will not value forgiveness very highly.

  124. But we need to add another component to our assessment.

  125. Who have we sinned against?

  126. Again, we do this somewhat on a human level.

  127. We would view offenses against children and other innocent or helpless people

  128. as more heinous than the sins against people who can protect themselves.

  129. We are more disgusted when we hear of someone scamming the elderly

  130. and even in prison with their warped sense of justice.

  131. They reserve their harshest treatment

  132. for those who are convicted of abuse against children.

  133. When I explain this to my children,

  134. we talk about how the consequences are more severe

  135. depending on who is sinned against.

  136. If they break one of the house rules,

  137. they have sinned against their parents

  138. and the consequences are proportionate to that.

  139. If they break a law, they have sinned against society

  140. and the consequences are more severe.

  141. Now we get to the Bible

  142. and the one they have sinned against is God, their creator,

  143. the Holy One, infinite and eternal.

  144. And that is the true measure of our sin.

  145. It doesn't matter that it was only a little lie.

  146. It was a sin against the infinite lawgiver.

  147. It may have only been a piece of fruit,

  148. but God told them not to eat it or they would die.

  149. And if we are going to say the judgment is too harsh,

  150. we are setting ourselves above God

  151. and saying that we know better.

  152. Some would say God sending people to hell is too much,

  153. too extreme.

  154. And either he wouldn't do that or he does that,

  155. then he's a monster, not worthy of worship.

  156. But let me urge you to view your sin this way.

  157. Our creator who made us has a right to demand perfect obedience.

  158. And when we fail, he has the right to set the consequences.

  159. And he has decreed that the soul that sins must die.

  160. The Bible repeatedly shows our condition before this holy judge

  161. of being condemned for our sin

  162. and deserving of eternal destruction.

  163. So work back from there.

  164. If hell is the verdict, then our sin is that bad.

  165. It's that big against the holy God.

  166. But the Bible also shows us another picture.

  167. From the beginning, God has desired to be seen as merciful and loving,

  168. a God who forgives sin.

  169. And he also shows that he is our only hope for forgiveness.

  170. Right after Adam and Eve sinned,

  171. God came and pronounced curses on them and on the serpent.

  172. And to Satan, he prophesied that salvation would come from the woman's seed and defeat Satan.

  173. God later clarified that the seed of the woman would be Abraham's seed

  174. and that through this seed, all the nations of the earth would be blessed.

  175. Through Abraham's grandson, Jacob, the nation of Israel was formed.

  176. And we see this promise to continue to be refined as we learn of the Messiah

  177. throughout the scriptures from the prophets of Israel.

  178. And all the while, God is teaching us that what he wants them to,

  179. he's teaching them and us what he wants us to know about him.

  180. When Moses sought to know God more intimately by seeing his glory,

  181. God revealed this about himself to Moses.

  182. In Exodus 33, I'm going to turn there.

  183. If you would like to turn there and follow along with me,

  184. I'm going to be looking at a few verses throughout Exodus 33 and 34.

  185. But in Exodus 33, in verses 18 through 19,

  186. Moses said,

  187. Please show me your glory.

  188. And God said,

  189. I will make all my goodness pass before you

  190. and will proclaim before you my name, the Lord.

  191. And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious

  192. and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

  193. And then if we go down into chapter 34 and verses 6 through 7,

  194. it says,

  195. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed,

  196. The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious,

  197. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,

  198. keeping steadfast love for thousands,

  199. forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

  200. but who will by no means clear the guilty,

  201. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children

  202. and the children's children to the third and fourth generation.

  203. So I want to see several important facts that emerge from these verses.

  204. First, in verse 7 there we see,

  205. Forgiveness is an outworking of God's compassion and grace.

  206. The God who forgives iniquity is the God who is merciful and gracious

  207. and slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

  208. Forgiveness is a matter of divine grace.

  209. It is from God.

  210. Second, because God's forgiveness is a matter of grace,

  211. it is a gift of God's sovereign grace.

  212. God bestows forgiveness on those whom he chooses to forgive.

  213. None are worthy of this grace,

  214. and thus no one has any claim on God's grace

  215. as manifested in the forgiveness of sins.

  216. God said to Moses,

  217. I will be gracious on whom I will be gracious

  218. and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

  219. So God forgives those who he chooses to forgive,

  220. and forgiveness is something which we, as guilty sinners,

  221. have no right to expect or demand.

  222. Third, the grace of God in forgiving sinners

  223. in no way sets aside the justice of God,

  224. which requires the punishment of guilty sinners.

  225. Some may think that they are being gracious

  226. when they overlook sin, and they might be,

  227. but when they simply refuse,

  228. sometimes it's just simply refusing to deal with it.

  229. Many parents think they are gracious

  230. when they do not punish their children for disobedience.

  231. But notice that God's grace

  232. does not set aside punishment for sins.

  233. It is substituted on Jesus who was punished for our sin.

  234. Even at this very early point

  235. in the history of God's dealings with his people,

  236. God makes it very clear

  237. that his grace does not mean

  238. he takes a soft view towards sin.

  239. God deals severely with sin.

  240. When he forgives men for sin,

  241. he still punishes that sin,

  242. and that punishment for sin, as we shall see,

  243. is borne by our Lord Jesus Christ in our place.

  244. Finally, note that the forgiveness of sins

  245. in no way removes any obligation

  246. from the object of God's grace to obey God.

  247. Based upon God's self-revelation of his glory here

  248. and the declaration of his grace and compassion

  249. by which he forgives sin,

  250. Moses goes on to appeal to God for the Israelites.

  251. Down in verse 9 of chapter 34,

  252. he says,

  253. O Lord, if I have found favor in your eyes,

  254. he said,

  255. then let the Lord go with us.

  256. Although this is a stiff-necked people,

  257. forgive our wickedness and our sin.

  258. Take us as your inheritance.

  259. So here we see Moses pleading for divine forgiveness

  260. for his people,

  261. and he receives the assurance

  262. that God will be present with his people

  263. as he leads them into the land of Canaan.

  264. But immediately we see the outgrowth of forgiveness

  265. is an obligation to live in accordance

  266. with the covenant God has established with his people.

  267. If we continue on in 34,

  268. they're starting in verse 10.

  269. There we are.

  270. And he said,

  271. Behold, I am in making a covenant

  272. before all your people.

  273. I will do marvels,

  274. such as have not been created

  275. in all the earth or in any nation.

  276. And all the people among whom you are

  277. shall see the work of the Lord,

  278. for it is an awesome thing

  279. that I will do with you.

  280. Observe what I command you this day.

  281. Make sure that's how far I want to go.

  282. Observe what I command you this day.

  283. Behold, I will drive out before you

  284. the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites,

  285. the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

  286. Take care, lest you make a covenant

  287. with the inhabitants of the land to which you go,

  288. lest it become a snare in your midst.

  289. You shall tear down their altars

  290. and break their pillars

  291. and cut down their ashram,

  292. for you shall worship no other god

  293. for the Lord, whose name is Jealous,

  294. is a jealous God.

  295. Lest you make a covenant

  296. with the inhabitants of the land

  297. and when they whore after their gods

  298. and sacrifice to their gods

  299. and you are invited,

  300. you eat of his sacrifice

  301. and you take of their daughters

  302. for your sons and their daughters,

  303. whore after their gods

  304. and make your sons whore after their gods.

  305. You shall not make a name for yourself

  306. any gods of cast metal.

  307. So to be God's people,

  308. to have God dwell in their midst,

  309. it requires a solution for sin,

  310. but it also requires a standard of righteousness

  311. which serves to define just what sin is.

  312. And so we see that coming to the people here in this

  313. and it continues on.

  314. We go on after that

  315. and he begins to give commandments

  316. about the Feast of Unleavened Bread

  317. and we begin to see some of the workings

  318. of the Ten Commandments

  319. concerning the Sabbath and other things.

  320. And these things are just showing us again

  321. that there is requirements

  322. that go along with this grace of forgiveness

  323. that God shows us.

  324. That work of reconciliation is still being done there.

  325. And we see that if sin can't be overlooked

  326. but must be punished,

  327. how can this be accomplished?

  328. So under the Old Testament laws,

  329. we continue to look into

  330. what Moses has written down for the Israelites.

  331. we see that men could offer sacrifices

  332. to God for their sins.

  333. In particular,

  334. we think of the Day of Atonement,

  335. this annual day,

  336. which was an occasion

  337. when the sins of the nation

  338. were dealt for for the past year.

  339. But the Day of Atonement

  340. didn't really pay for any sin

  341. or put away sin.

  342. It simply put off divine judgment.

  343. Where we liken the sins of Israel

  344. to a financial debt,

  345. then the sacrifice that was offered

  346. on that Day of Atonement

  347. would be similar to

  348. paying off the interest

  349. for the past year.

  350. Sin was not put away,

  351. but it was put off for another year.

  352. Year after year,

  353. the debt increased.

  354. And someday, somehow,

  355. there must be a payment for the sin.

  356. And so there would be.

  357. The nation of Israel

  358. very quickly began to sin against God

  359. by disobeying His covenant.

  360. And over and over again,

  361. we see the Israelites sin.

  362. And over and over again,

  363. God graciously puts up

  364. with this willful and disobedient people.

  365. Finally, the first generation

  366. of Israelites was forbidden

  367. to enter into the promised land.

  368. They died in the wilderness.

  369. And their sons and daughters

  370. were about to enter that land

  371. as the book of Deuteronomy begins.

  372. The Mosaic covenant

  373. is once again reiterated,

  374. reiterated,

  375. and the Ten Commandments

  376. are repeated in Deuteronomy 5.

  377. But there is no note of optimism here.

  378. The problem underlying Israel's rebellion

  379. is the condition of the hearts

  380. of the Israelites.

  381. Deuteronomy 29.4 says,

  382. But to this day,

  383. the Lord has not given you

  384. a heart to understand

  385. or eyes to see

  386. or ears to hear.

  387. And throughout the whole book

  388. of Deuteronomy,

  389. it's clear that the Israelites

  390. will not keep God's covenant

  391. with them

  392. and that the nation

  393. will experience the cursings

  394. that are spelled out in this book,

  395. particularly in chapter 28.

  396. And in spite of their disobedience,

  397. there is still hope for the nation

  398. because God is a forgiving God.

  399. And His forgiveness

  400. is not based on man's worth

  401. or merit.

  402. Consequently,

  403. Moses actually tells the people

  404. that after they have been driven

  405. out of the promised land

  406. and lived in captivity

  407. among the nations,

  408. God will fulfill His promise

  409. and bless this nation.

  410. If you want to turn over

  411. to Deuteronomy chapter 30,

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  412. we're going to look at a few verses

  413. there

  414. where Moses tells them this,

  415. that

  416. we see the promises.

  417. In chapter 30

  418. of Deuteronomy,

  419. verses 1 through 5,

  420. it says,

  421. And when all these things

  422. come upon you,

  423. the blessing and the curse,

  424. which I have set before you,

  425. and you call them to mind

  426. among all the nations

  427. where the Lord your God

  428. has driven you,

  429. and return to the Lord your God,

  430. you and your children,

  431. and obey His voice

  432. in all that I command you today

  433. with all your heart

  434. and with all your soul,

  435. then the Lord your God

  436. will restore your fortunes

  437. and have mercy on you.

  438. And He will gather you again

  439. from all the peoples

  440. where the Lord your God

  441. has scattered you.

  442. If your outcasts

  443. are in the uttermost part of heaven,

  444. from there the Lord your God

  445. will gather you,

  446. and from there He will take you.

  447. And the Lord your God

  448. will bring you into the land

  449. that your fathers possess,

  450. that you may possess it,

  451. and He will make you

  452. more prosperous and numerous

  453. than your fathers.

  454. So we see God promises

  455. to bring about these promises

  456. to these people

  457. when they have repented

  458. and returned to Him.

  459. He goes on to indicate

  460. that the repentance

  461. of the Israelites

  462. is a result of His work

  463. in their hearts,

  464. giving them a new heart

  465. which seeks to please Him

  466. and which loves

  467. to keep His commandments.

  468. We see this in 6 through 10.

  469. It says,

  470. And the Lord your God

  471. will circumcise your heart

  472. and the heart of your offspring

  473. so that you will love

  474. the Lord your God

  475. with all your heart

  476. and with all your soul

  477. and that you may live.

  478. And the Lord your God

  479. will put all these curses

  480. on your foes

  481. and enemies

  482. who persecuted you.

  483. And you shall again

  484. obey the voice of the Lord

  485. and keep all His commandments

  486. that I command you today.

  487. The Lord your God

  488. will make you abundantly prosperous

  489. in all the work of your hand,

  490. in the fruit of your womb

  491. and in the fruit of your cattle

  492. and in the fruit of your ground.

  493. For the Lord again

  494. will take delight

  495. in prospering you

  496. as He took delight

  497. in your fathers.

  498. When you obey the voice

  499. of the Lord your God

  500. to keep His commandments

  501. and His statutes

  502. that are written

  503. in this book of the law,

  504. when you turn

  505. to the Lord your God

  506. with all your heart

  507. and with all your soul.

  508. When we look carefully

  509. at the words there next

  510. that He says,

  511. I mean,

  512. we see Him given this heart,

  513. but we also,

  514. I think,

  515. need to make a crucial observation

  516. as we go on

  517. and read the next few verses.

  518. Beginning in 11,

  519. it says,

  520. For this commandment

  521. that I command you today

  522. is not too hard for you,

  523. neither is it far off.

  524. It is not in heaven

  525. that you should say,

  526. Who will ascend to the heaven for us

  527. and bring it to us

  528. that we may hear it and do it?

  529. Neither is it beyond the sea

  530. that you should say,

  531. Who will go over the sea for us

  532. and bring it to us

  533. that we may hear it and do it?

  534. But the word is very near you.

  535. It is in your mouth

  536. and in your heart

  537. so that you can do it.

  538. We see here,

  539. He calls it the commandment.

  540. It is just one commandment.

  541. It is not ten or more.

  542. And this one commandment

  543. that is being commanded,

  544. He says that this commandment

  545. is not too difficult.

  546. And so what is this one commandment?

  547. It is in effect

  548. when you turn to the Lord your God

  549. with all your heart

  550. and with all your soul.

  551. We see that in verse 10.

  552. So if the law were to be summed up

  553. in one commandment,

  554. what would it be?

  555. And we know that answer from Scripture.

  556. Matthew 22,

  557. Jesus is with the Pharisees

  558. and the Sadducees

  559. and it says in 22,

  560. starting in verse 34 through 38,

  561. it says,

  562. But when the Pharisees heard

  563. that He had silenced the Sadducees,

  564. they gathered together.

  565. And one of them,

  566. a lawyer,

  567. asked a question to test Him.

  568. Teacher,

  569. which is the greatest commandment

  570. in the law?

  571. And He said to Him,

  572. You shall love the Lord your God

  573. with all your heart

  574. and with all your soul

  575. and with all your mind.

  576. this is the great

  577. and first commandment.

  578. And so when we break

  579. this greatest of commandments,

  580. we are the greatest of sinners.

  581. The commandments of the Lord

  582. found in the law here

  583. are impossible for men to keep.

  584. And to avoid,

  585. it's impossible for men to keep

  586. to avoid sin

  587. or to bring about

  588. the forgiveness of sins.

  589. This is what the Israelites are told.

  590. And history has shown

  591. that God's people

  592. cannot keep the law.

  593. If they suppose

  594. their law keeping

  595. will bring about God's blessings

  596. and assure them

  597. of God's forgiveness,

  598. they are wrong.

  599. Attempts at law keeping

  600. only prove men

  601. to be guilty sinners

  602. worthy of death.

  603. So because the forgiveness

  604. of sins

  605. was not something

  606. men could bring about,

  607. these men of God

  608. began to look forward

  609. to a time

  610. when God would accomplish

  611. this task.

  612. All through the rest

  613. of the Old Testament,

  614. this theme would be developed

  615. as we see the outworkings

  616. of the covenant

  617. made with Moses

  618. and the eventual promise

  619. of even a new covenant.

  620. Finally,

  621. in the fullness of time,

  622. God sends his son,

  623. the one promised

  624. in Genesis 3,

  625. the seed who will come

  626. to deal with the problem

  627. of sin.

  628. He sends the Messiah,

  629. the promised one.

  630. He comes to fulfill

  631. God's promise

  632. to forgive men's sins

  633. and to create

  634. a new heart within.

  635. From the beginning

  636. of his ministry,

  637. Jesus showed that

  638. his mission

  639. was to forgive sins.

  640. Why don't you turn

  641. with me to Luke 5.

  642. We're going to look

  643. at verses 17 through 26.

  644. Let me read that to us.

  645. And one of those days,

  646. as he was teaching,

  647. Pharisees and teachers

  648. of the law

  649. were sitting there

  650. who had come

  651. from every village

  652. of Galilee and Judea

  653. and from Jerusalem.

  654. And the power of the Lord

  655. was with him to heal.

  656. And behold,

  657. some men were bringing

  658. on a bed

  659. a man who was paralyzed.

  660. And they were seeking

  661. to bring him in

  662. and lay him before Jesus,

  663. but finding no way

  664. to bring him in

  665. because of the crowd.

  666. They went up on the roof

  667. and let him down

  668. with his bed,

  669. through the tiles,

  670. into the midst

  671. before Jesus.

  672. And when he saw

  673. their faith,

  674. he said,

  675. Man,

  676. your sins are forgiven you.

  677. And the scribes

  678. and the Pharisees

  679. began to question,

  680. saying,

  681. Who is this

  682. who speaks blasphemies?

  683. Who can forgive sins

  684. but God alone?

  685. When Jesus perceived

  686. their thoughts,

  687. he answered them,

  688. Why do you question

  689. in your hearts?

  690. Which is easier to say,

  691. your sins are forgiven,

  692. or to say,

  693. rise and walk?

  694. But that you may know

  695. that the Son of Man

  696. has authority on earth

  697. to forgive sins,

  698. he said to the man

  699. who was paralyzed,

  700. I say to you,

  701. rise up,

  702. pick up your bed,

  703. and go home.

  704. And immediately

  705. he rose up before them

  706. and picked up

  707. what he had been lying on

  708. and went home,

  709. glorifying God.

  710. And amazement seized

  711. them all,

  712. and they glorified God

  713. and were filled with awe,

  714. saying,

  715. We have seen

  716. extraordinary things today.

  717. Jesus' actions

  718. and words here

  719. in Luke

  720. are truly remarkable.

  721. And he boggled the minds

  722. of those who understood

  723. the implications

  724. of what he was doing.

  725. If we have learned anything

  726. from the Old Testament,

  727. it is that God alone

  728. can forgive sins.

  729. God's solution for sinners

  730. was the coming of the Messiah

  731. who would bear the sins of men.

  732. When Jesus was confronted

  733. with the paralytic

  734. lowered through the roof,

  735. he did not deal

  736. with his physical problem first,

  737. but rather he dealt

  738. with his greater spiritual dilemma,

  739. his sins.

  740. When Jesus told this man

  741. that his sins were forgiven,

  742. Jesus claimed far more

  743. than the people expected.

  744. A mere man,

  745. perhaps a prophet,

  746. might be able to cast out demons

  747. or perform miracles of healing,

  748. but only God

  749. can forgive sins.

  750. When Jesus healed this man

  751. and forgave him

  752. of his sins,

  753. Jesus boldly proclaimed

  754. that he was the Messiah,

  755. the one who had come

  756. to accomplish

  757. the forgiveness of sins

  758. and eternal salvation.

  759. It is he who can

  760. and will change

  761. the hearts of men

  762. to love God and men.

  763. So then as we come

  764. to the time for our Lord

  765. to be crucified for our sins,

  766. he spoke these words

  767. to our disciples

  768. which we heard earlier

  769. as he instituted

  770. the Lord's Supper.

  771. In Matthew 26,

  772. it says,

  773. now as they were eating,

  774. Jesus took bread

  775. and after blessing,

  776. he broke it

  777. and gave it to the disciples

  778. and said,

  779. take, eat,

  780. this is my body.

  781. And he took a cup

  782. and when he had given thanks,

  783. he gave it to them saying,

  784. drink of it,

  785. all of you,

  786. for this is my blood

  787. of the covenant

  788. which is poured out for many

  789. for the forgiveness of sins.

  790. The forgiveness of sins

  791. has been accomplished

  792. once and for all

  793. by the sacrifice

  794. of Jesus Christ

  795. on the cross of Calvary.

  796. He was sinless,

  797. yet he bore our sins.

  798. So that we might be forgiven.

  799. God did not overlook our sins

  800. but he punished them in Christ.

  801. The good news of the gospel

  802. is that those who believe

  803. in Jesus Christ

  804. can have their sins forgiven.

  805. Later after he rose

  806. from the dead,

  807. he's walking with a couple disciples

  808. on the road to Emmaus

  809. in Luke 24

  810. and it says that

  811. he opened their minds

  812. to understand the scriptures

  813. and said to them,

  814. thus it is written

  815. that the Christ should suffer

  816. and on the third day

  817. rise from the dead

  818. and that repentance

  819. and forgiveness of sins

  820. should be proclaimed

  821. in his name

  822. to all the nations

  823. beginning from Jerusalem.

  824. You are the witness

  825. of these things.

  826. And so we see Jesus

  827. just telling us

  828. this is what the gospel is.

  829. Preaching repentance

  830. and the forgiveness of sins

  831. starting in Jerusalem

  832. to all the nations.

  833. And so this is the gospel

  834. that we preach

  835. and seek to spread.

  836. The forgiveness of sins

  837. is not man's work

  838. but God's.

  839. And in Acts 5.31,

  840. Peter also announces

  841. that God not only grants

  842. the forgiveness of sins

  843. but also repentance.

  844. Men are to repent

  845. but it is God

  846. who brings men to repentance.

  847. Salvation is wholly

  848. the work of God

  849. and not of men.

  850. Forgiveness of sins

  851. is entirely God's work

  852. and all we must do

  853. to receive it

  854. is to repent

  855. and believe in Jesus Christ

  856. to trust in his

  857. sacrificial death,

  858. burial,

  859. and resurrection.

  860. Forgiveness of sins

  861. is impossible

  862. for men to accomplish.

  863. But God has accomplished

  864. the impossible

  865. through Jesus Christ.

  866. In order to receive

  867. this forgiveness

  868. we need to confess

  869. our sins.

  870. That is to agree

  871. with God's judgment

  872. on them

  873. and the fact that

  874. we are deserving

  875. of eternal wrath.

  876. And then when Jesus

  877. died on the cross

  878. to pay for our sins

  879. we need to understand

  880. that he did indeed

  881. pay for them.

  882. All of them.

  883. 1 John 2.2 says

  884. that he is the propitiation

  885. for our sins

  886. and not for ours only

  887. but also for the sins

  888. of the whole world.

  889. He died for every

  890. single one of our sins

  891. and he provided

  892. the payment for those.

  893. 1 John 1.9 says

  894. if we confess our sins

  895. he is faithful and just

  896. to forgive us our sins

  897. and to cleanse us

  898. from all unrighteousness.

  899. Jesus paid for all

  900. the sins of all of us.

  901. Just before he died

  902. on the cross

  903. Jesus cried out

  904. it is finished.

  905. He used a Greek word there

  906. that had to do

  907. with commerce

  908. but the meaning of it

  909. was the debt

  910. has been paid

  911. in full.

  912. All of our sins

  913. were atoned for

  914. by the death

  915. of Jesus on the cross

  916. and this has great

  917. implications for us.

  918. That means when we ask

  919. the Lord to forgive

  920. our sins

  921. he does.

  922. He is faithful

  923. and righteous

  924. to forgive us

  925. our sins

  926. and he forgives us

  927. in some marvelous ways.

  928. Let me just detail these

  929. as we close our time today.

  930. First he forgives us

  931. graciously.

  932. That is again

  933. we don't deserve it.

  934. God did not forgive us

  935. because we were good.

  936. Romans 5.8

  937. says that it is

  938. while we were yet sinners

  939. Christ died for us.

  940. He forgives us

  941. because he is gracious

  942. which means that

  943. he treats us

  944. far better than we deserve.

  945. He also forgives us

  946. freely.

  947. God does not make us

  948. earn our forgiveness

  949. by doing some great deed.

  950. Forgiveness is not cheap.

  951. It costs

  952. the unimaginable price

  953. of the death

  954. of the Son of God

  955. on the cross

  956. but it is free to us.

  957. We don't have to pay

  958. anything for it.

  959. The gift of God

  960. is eternal life

  961. as it tells us

  962. in Romans 6.23.

  963. He forgives us freely.

  964. He also forgives us deeply.

  965. No matter what our sin

  966. he forgives us.

  967. It doesn't matter

  968. what sin you have committed

  969. God will forgive you.

  970. King David was an adulterer

  971. and a murderer

  972. and a liar

  973. and God forgave him.

  974. The Apostle Paul

  975. said he was a blasphemer

  976. and God forgave him.

  977. Peter denied three times

  978. that he even knew Jesus

  979. and God forgave him.

  980. Paul said in

  981. 1 Corinthians 6.9-11

  982. speaking of adulterers

  983. homosexuals

  984. thieves and drunkards

  985. that such were some of you

  986. but you were washed.

  987. He indicated that

  988. all these sins

  989. can be forgiven.

  990. So do you have anything

  991. worse on your spiritual resume?

  992. Not likely.

  993. He can pay for all

  994. he has paid for all

  995. these sins.

  996. It says in John 1.9 again

  997. 1 John 1.9

  998. The blood of Jesus

  999. his son

  1000. cleanses us

  1001. from all sin.

  1002. There is no sin

  1003. you have committed

1004. that God will not forgive

1005. if you bring it to him.

  1006. We can take comfort

  1007. in that.

  1008. He forgives us deeply.

  1009. That means no matter

  1010. what the sin

  1011. we can thank God

  1012. for forgiving us.

  1013. And not only that

  1014. he also forgives us

  1015. repeatedly.

1016. Again here we can claim

  1017. 1 John 1.9

  1018. which says

1019. if we confess our sins

  1020. he is faithful

  1021. and righteous

1022. to forgive us our sins.

  1023. The word faithful

1024. means that he will do it

  1025. every time.

  1026. He forgives us repeatedly.

  1027. Just think of it.

  1028. Jesus commanded Peter

1029. that we are to forgive

  1030. our brothers

  1031. 70 times 7

  1032. then we know

  1033. that he will do

1034. the same thing for us.

1035. He is not asking us

  1036. to do something

  1037. which he himself

  1038. will not do.

  1039. And that's good news.

  1040. How many of us

  1041. have had to avail

  1042. ourselves of him

  1043. as his repeated

  1044. forgiving grace

  1045. for the same sin

  1046. over and over?

  1047. How many times

1048. do you have to ask God

  1049. to forgive you

1050. for words that we say?

  1051. Or how many times

1052. do you have to come back

  1053. to him in prayer

  1054. for the same anger?

  1055. Or for not doing

  1056. what you knew

  1057. you should have done

  1058. or whatever

  1059. your besetting sin is?

  1060. Thank God

1061. that there is no limit

  1062. on his forgiveness

  1063. of us.

1064. So as I close today

1065. I just want to invite you

  1066. again as Ben did

1067. if you have not already

  1068. received the forgiveness

  1069. from God

  1070. and maybe God

  1071. is showing you

  1072. that your sin

  1073. is worthy of condemnation

  1074. and even death

  1075. understand that

  1076. it's not too big.

  1077. I urge you

  1078. repent

  1079. and believe

  1080. in Jesus Christ

  1081. that Jesus Christ

  1082. paid that price

  1083. on the cross

  1084. and that if you

  1085. turn to him

  1086. God will forgive you

  1087. today.

  1088. God in Christ

  1089. has forgiven us

1090. so let us thank him

  1091. and praise him

  1092. for this great gift.

  1093. Join me in prayer.

  1094. Dear Heavenly Father

  1095. we do confess

  1096. that we are

  1097. great sinners.

1098. You are a great God

  1099. and we have sinned

  1100. against you

  1101. and Father

  1102. we do not even

  1103. comprehend

  1104. what that means fully

  1105. but Father

  1106. help us

  1107. to continually

  1108. understand

  1109. what a great

  1110. forgiveness

  1111. you have shown us.

  1112. Father

  1113. I just

  1114. again thank you

  1115. that you have

  1116. revealed this

1117. to us in the word

  1118. that you have

  1119. sent your son

  1120. Jesus Christ

  1121. to die

  1122. as a payment

  1123. for sin

  1124. that you raised

  1125. him from the dead

  1126. showing that

  1127. that payment

  1128. was accepted.

  1129. Father

  1130. I pray that

  1131. even now

  1132. if you are

  1133. convicting some

  1134. of their sin

  1135. and their need

  1136. for forgiveness

  1137. I pray that you

  1138. would do that work

  1139. in their lives

  1140. and that you

  1141. would cause them

  1142. to turn to you

  1143. in repentance

  1144. today

  1145. and believe

  1146. and that you

  1147. might forgive them.

  1148. Father

  1149. continue to be

  1150. with us

  1151. as we worship

  1152. and think

  1153. on this great gift

  1154. and we pray

  1155. these things

  1156. in Jesus name

  1157. Amen.
