  1. Good morning. You may be seated. This is time for our children to go to your Sunday school classes and learn about the Lord.

  2. May God bless you as you go to Sunday school.

  3. The last several weeks we have been looking at the question, can God use me?

  4. Is there really a place for me? Can I be used?

  5. And so we have looked at various people who are in some ways oddballs.

  6. They don't exactly fit a typical group of people.

  7. We saw that Ehud was a left-handed judge in a society dominated by right-handed people.

  8. Deborah was a woman in a society dominated by men.

  9. Again, Gideon is mostly a coward who needs constantly to be assured that he's okay, that God is going to be with him.

  10. And he keeps requesting for signs that God would assure him.

  11. And today we look at Jephthah in Judges chapter 11 and 12.

    Judges 11 chapter mention

  12. Jephthah is a very interesting judge.

  13. There are two judges that I think are extremely interesting.

  14. Jephthah happens to be one of them.

  15. The life of Jephthah is in chapters 11 and 12.

  16. And it is looking at two incidents.

  17. But the two incidents are connected with each other.

  18. So they're not just two separate, unrelated incidents.

  19. There is an overarching theme which we will see.

  20. So let's begin first by looking at Jephthah.

  21. And let's turn in your Bibles, please, to the book of Judges chapter 11.

    Judges 11 chapter mention

  22. If you look at your bulletin, you will also see that on the back I try to help you follow what I'm trying to say.

  23. So Jephthah, in verse 1, Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior.

  24. His father was Gilead.

  25. His mother was a prostitute.

  26. His mother was a prostitute.

  27. Gilead's wife, Gilead's legitimate wife, also bore him sons.

  28. And when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away.

  29. You're not going to get any inheritance in our family, they said, because you are the son of another woman.

  30. So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tov,

  31. where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him.

  32. The problem with Jephthah is many.

  33. First of all, his mother is a prostitute.

  34. So he is clearly an outsider in Israel.

  35. He would never be treated with honor or dignity or respect or anything like that.

  36. Socially, he's an outcast.

  37. So he has no family.

  38. And his half-brothers, who have the same father but don't have the same mother, drove him away.

  39. You're not going to get any inheritance in our family.

  40. And so he left to the land of Tov.

  41. Jephthah has no family, no country, and no future.

  42. When we look at that incident, it echoes some things.

  43. When we think about brothers getting rid of their brother, perhaps you might recall Genesis and the story of Joseph.

  44. But in the case of Joseph, it's not because he was illegitimate.

  45. In the case of Joseph, it was because his brothers were jealous of him.

  46. They suspected he's going to be the leader in the family, and they didn't want him to be.

  47. And so they got rid of him.

  48. So Joseph is expelled by his family and sold as a slave to Egypt.

  49. And unless God had intervened, that would have been the end of Joseph, a slave unknown somewhere in Egypt with no record and nothing.

  50. But God intervened.

  51. So Joseph reminds us of that situation.

  52. But so does David.

  53. What we have in David is something similar to this.

  54. Saul is jealous of this young man who is becoming popular with the masses.

  55. And so David marries Saul's daughter.

  56. But as Saul's jealousy increases, David's life is in danger.

  57. He becomes a fugitive.

  58. And about 400 people join him in his fugitive.

  59. So this is starting to echo the life of David.

  60. But just as Joseph ended on a great note, and David ended on a great note, Jephthah does not.

  61. And we'll have to figure out why.

  62. When they seem to be on the same path, heading in the same direction, Jephthah is not.

  63. In any case, Jephthah is expelled from his country.

  64. And he is a vagabond.

  65. He is like Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest.

  66. And Israel is in danger.

  67. They want a leader.

  68. They want a leader to help them.

  69. So they come to him, not because they love him, not because they care about him, but because they need him as a warrior.

  70. And he doesn't trust them.

  71. And so he makes them take an oath.

  72. That is the first oath.

  73. That is a preview of other things to happen.

  74. And so, in any case, they said, you know, if you lead us, we'll make you the leader and the commander.

  75. And Jephthah doesn't believe them, doesn't trust them, but he decides to do it.

  76. Because Israel is at war, this brings us to the second issue.

  77. But before we go to the second issue, I want you to think about that.

  78. What happens to people who feel that their family doesn't love them, that they're not accepted?

  79. I hope none of you has experienced that.

  80. I really hope so.

  81. I hope you all come from healthy families where your parents love you, where they cherish you, where they esteem you, where they would do anything for you.

  82. I really hope that that is the case.

  83. And, of course, rejection goes in various degrees.

  84. Rejection is not just one event.

  85. It's a spectrum.

  86. I can speak from my own life.

  87. We grew up in an average family in Lebanon.

  88. We are not, by any stretch of the imagination, wealthy.

  89. We are actually fairly poor.

  90. And my father became convinced that the way to come out of poverty is through education.

  91. And so he wanted to make sure that all of us went to good schools, got a good education, and were able to improve our state in life.

  92. For that reason, and because in education I was extremely competitive and could compete very hard and do very, very well in college and in school,

  93. I was sent to America to get a Western education, which is a lot better than Middle Eastern education,

  94. and hopefully that would open doors.

  95. My father wanted me to be a medical doctor.

  96. There are 14 cousins of us.

  97. Eight are medical doctors.

  98. And my father thought that I was the smartest of them all, but that's, of course, only his opinion.

  99. My uncle wouldn't agree with him.

  100. So he wanted me to worship, to study medicine.

  101. His daily urging was, become a doctor, make a lot of money.

  102. Become a doctor, make a lot of money.

  103. In many ways, money was my father's God.

  104. In many ways, that was.

  105. And so he thought, if I come to America, I'd become a doctor, I'd make a lot of money.

  106. And I'm sure I would have.

  107. I have two cousins who are doctors, and both of them, either one of them, makes four times more than I make as a professor.

  108. Four times.

  109. Sometimes I think to myself, why didn't I listen to my father?

  110. You know, I wouldn't be driving Toyotas, I'd be driving Rose Voices.

  111. I wouldn't be living in Kenosha, I'd be living in Beverly Hills.

  112. So when my father found out that I'm interested in questions about truth and reality and wanted to major in philosophy, he was really, really disappointed in me.

  113. He thought I was wasting my time and wasting my life and wasting my talents, asking questions, what's ultimate reality?

  114. How do we know what we know?

  115. And all these fascinating questions in epistemology.

  116. After I became a Christian and decided that God was calling me to be a professor, he was even more disappointed in me.

  117. His advice to me was, become a doctor, make as much money as you can, and then tithe to the church.

  118. And that's all your relationship with God.

  119. My relationship with God would have been reduced to tithing.

  120. You know, I write God a check and our account is fulfilled.

  121. He couldn't understand that I would desire God in a more deeper way than that.

  122. But God has his own sense of humor.

  123. When my father was 70 years old, he became very sick.

  124. For the first time in his life he had ever been sick.

  125. The nurse that took care of him was a Christian.

  126. And what I had failed for about 20 years to do, she succeeded.

  127. She led him to the Lord at the age of 70.

  128. I remember when he was on his deathbed, he said to me,

  129. Samir, I'm sorry, I never told you I loved you.

  130. And that was true.

  131. I don't remember ever once being told that he loved me.

  132. So, I am not sold into slavery into Egypt, but I think I know a little bit about rejection.

  133. And I think for that reason I esteem my heavenly father a lot more than if I had wonderful uncles and aunts.

  134. And then that maybe God's love wouldn't mean that much to me.

  135. But it means a lot to me.

  136. Because God loves me at a time that I didn't think anybody else in our family did.

  137. So, Jephthah is in a similar but far worse situation.

  138. He has no position of honor.

  139. His mother is a prostitute.

  140. He's in exile from his country.

  141. And he has no future.

  142. But he does have a daughter.

  143. He does have one daughter.

  144. No sons.

  145. Just one daughter.

  146. So, he wants to go to battle.

  147. And he takes a vow.

  148. And the vow is rather stupid.

  149. So, look at chapter 11, verse 29.

  150. Then the spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah.

  151. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh.

  152. Passed through Mizpah of Gilead.

  153. And from there he advanced against the Ammonites.

  154. Ammonites would be modern day Jordan.

  155. And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord.

  156. If you give the Ammonites into my hands.

  157. If I have victory.

  158. Whatever comes out of the door of my house.

  159. To meet me.

  160. When I return in triumph.

  161. From the Ammonites.

  162. Will be the Lord's.

  163. And I will sacrifice it.

  164. As a burn offering.

  165. Whoever first comes out.

  166. Do dogs know how to come out.

  167. And greet you when you've had victory.

  168. Do dogs know that.

  169. I wonder.

  170. Whether he was thinking about a human being.

  171. Or whether he was just saying.

  172. You know, whoever comes out, comes out.

  173. But he makes this foolish vow.

  174. Whoever comes out first.

  175. Will be offered as a sacrifice.

  176. He does have the victory.

  177. And his daughter comes out.

  178. So, he has no family.

  179. He has no country.

  180. He has no future.

  181. He does have a daughter.

  182. And guess what he has just finished doing?

  183. Putting himself in a situation to lose his daughter.

  184. The problem here is that this is a vow.

  185. And it is a foolish vow.

  186. Nobody should make these kinds of vows.

  187. But there are vows in the scriptures.

  188. And maybe we should look at a couple of those vows.

  189. Just to figure out whether we as Christians should make vows.

  190. Or whether we should avoid it like a plague.

  191. Take a look at Genesis chapter 28.

    Genesis 28 chapter mention

  192. This is an interesting passage.

  193. I'll keep you up thinking about it.

  194. Genesis 28.

  195. Look at Genesis 28 verses 20 through 22.

    Genesis 28:20–22

  196. So, chapter 28 verses 20 through 22.

  197. Then Jacob made a vow saying,

  198. If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey.

  199. And I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear.

  200. So that I may return safely to my father's house.

  201. Then the Lord will be my God.

  202. If God does these things for me, he will be my God.

  203. I want you to just to think for a minute.

  204. And I'm not going to give you the answer.

  205. Is he pledging or is he bargaining?

  206. Think about it.

  207. Is he making a deal with God?

  208. Or is he pledging?

  209. It depends on, I suppose, how you choose to interpret it.

  210. A much more nobler vow is in 1 Samuel chapter 9.

    1 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  211. That is the vow of Hannah.

  212. So, in 1 Samuel chapter 9.

    1 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  213. 1 Samuel chapter 9.

    1 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  214. 1 Samuel chapter 9.

    1 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  215. 1, 9.

  216. Once they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh,

  217. Hannah stood up.

  218. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the chair by the doorpost of the Lord's temple.

  219. In bitterness of soul, Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord.

  220. And she made a vow saying,

  221. O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me

  222. and not forget your servant but give her a son,

  223. then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life.

  224. And no razor will ever be used on his head.

  225. It's obvious that Jacob is asking God for things for himself.

  226. Here she is asking for things for herself.

  227. But she's not going to keep the child and benefit and enjoy him, etc.

  228. She's going to give him back to God.

  229. But it is a vow.

  230. We have another stupid vow.

  231. King Saul.

  232. 1 Samuel 14.

  233. He is having victory.

  234. They are in a battle.

  235. And in 1 Samuel 14, 24.

  236. 1 Samuel 14, 24.

  237. Now the men of Israel were in distress that day

  238. because Saul had bound the people under an oath,

  239. saying,

  240. Cursed be any man who eats food

  241. before evening comes,

  242. before I have avenged myself on my enemies.

  243. So none of the troops tasted food.

  244. So they are fighting hard

  245. and they're not eating

  246. because Saul made a vow

  247. that they wouldn't eat until the victory came.

  248. And so here they were,

  249. tired, exhausted,

  250. fatigued,

  251. fighting hard,

  252. but they can't eat.

  253. His own son had not heard about that.

  254. He wasn't aware that such a vow had been made

  255. and so he finds honey and he eats it.

  256. And his father wants to kill him.

  257. Even though he didn't know about the vow,

  258. but Saul was going to kill Jonathan.

  259. And then of course,

  260. another vow is in Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6:22

  261. verse 22.

  262. It is the vow of Herod Antipas.

  263. When Salome danced in front before him,

  264. he gave her that foolish vow,

  265. I'll give you anything you want to

  266. up to half of my kingdom.

  267. And she said,

  268. give me the head of John the Baptist.

  269. And he didn't want to,

  270. but he had made a vow

  271. in front of his officers

  272. and didn't want to embarrass himself.

  273. So there are vows,

  274. and some of them good

  275. and some of them awful.

  276. Some result in the better

  277. and some result in the worse.

  278. How are we to think of Japheth's vow?

  279. Let me suggest a couple options.

  280. Turn to Micah chapter 6, verse 6.

    Micah 6:6

  281. Micah 6, 6 is a very important passage.

  282. It really is extremely important.

  283. In many, many Jewish circles,

  284. it is considered the summary

  285. of the ethical statements

  286. of the Old Testament.

  287. Jesus quotes it

  288. and calls two of the commandments

  289. the most important.

  290. You can see that in Matthew 23, 23.

  291. But in Micah chapter 6, verse 8,

    Micah 6:8

  292. Micah knows that he has sinned against God

  293. and he's asking himself,

  294. what does God want me to do?

  295. How do I know

  296. that I have done enough?

  297. Let's say in an outburst of anger

  298. you insulted your wife

  299. and then you want to be reconciled

  300. with her.

  301. What's enough?

  302. Chocolate?

  303. Flowers?

  304. Chocolate and flowers?

  305. Chocolate, flowers, and eating out?

  306. How do you know

  307. that you've done enough?

  308. So Micah is thinking about

  309. something similar

  310. in Micah 6, 6.

  311. With what shall I come before the Lord

  312. and bow down before the exalted God?

  313. Shall I come before him

  314. with burnt offerings?

  315. With a calf one year old?

  316. A calf one year old

  317. would be more expensive

  318. than burnt offerings.

  319. Will the Lord be pleased

  320. with thousands of rams?

  321. Ten thousand rivers of oil?

  322. And then he's thinking,

  323. what's the most expensive thing

  324. I've got?

  325. My child.

  326. Shall I offer my firstborn

  327. for my transgression,

  328. the fruit of my body

  329. for the sin of my soul?

  330. He is contemplating,

  331. maybe I should sacrifice

  332. my own child.

  333. Of course,

  334. had he done that,

  335. he would have compounded

  336. the situation with murder

  337. on top of whatever else

  338. he had done.

  339. And then he receives the answer,

  340. he has showed you,

  341. O man,

  342. what is good.

  343. And what does the Lord

  344. require of you?

  345. To act justly,

  346. to love mercy,

  347. and to walk with your God.

  348. So,

  349. maybe,

  350. maybe Jephthah

  351. is the kind of person

  352. who is

  353. so sensitive

  354. that he is willing

  355. to admit

  356. to anything

  357. you accuse him of.

  358. That whether he did it

  359. or not,

  360. he's willing to admit it.

  361. Part of the plot

  362. of Brother Skarmazov.

  363. Or,

  364. maybe,

  365. he is thinking,

  366. my sin

  367. is so big,

  368. little sin,

  369. little punishment,

  370. medium-sized sin,

  371. medium-sized punishment,

  372. big sin,

  373. big punishment,

  374. humongous sin,

  375. humongous punishment,

  376. therefore,

  377. the life of my son.

  378. I don't know.

  379. We're not told

  380. what was going on

  381. in Jephthah's mind.

  382. And I don't know

  383. whether he was bargaining

  384. with God or not.

  385. But in any case,

  386. he makes the vow.

  387. You need to realize,

  388. first of all,

  389. that if he wanted

  390. to keep his vow,

  391. no priest in Israel

  392. would allow him.

  393. human sacrifices

  394. would not have been

  395. permitted in Israel.

  396. Maybe he would have

  397. to take her alone

  398. to his own altar

  399. and kill her there.

  400. But to take her

  401. to a priest

  402. and ask the priest

  403. to offer her

  404. as a sacrifice

  405. would be completely

  406. forbidden.

  407. The second thing

  408. I want you to know

  409. that the worst king

  410. in Israel

  411. is Ahaz.

  412. And Ahaz's sin

  413. is that he embraced

  414. the worship

  415. of Assyrian gods.

  416. And Assyrian gods

  417. is idolatry.

  418. I mean,

  419. it is bad enough

  420. because it's idolatry.

  421. But what is worse

  422. about Assyrian gods

  423. is that you offered

  424. humans.

  425. So the darkest moment

  426. in Israel's history

  427. was Ahaz sacrificing

  428. his own sons,

  429. as 2 Chronicles records,

  430. sacrificing his own sons

  431. to the Assyrian gods.

  432. So I don't think

  433. he would have been able

  434. to sacrifice her

  435. legitimately.

  436. Maybe illegitimately,

  437. yes,

  438. but not legitimately.

  439. And the third thing

  440. is that there is something

  441. very interesting

  442. going on.

  443. She realizes

  444. that he took an oath

  445. and that he had taken

  446. an oath before God

  447. and so she says,

  448. in fact,

  449. give me some time

  450. so I can go

  451. to the mountains.

  452. And he does give her

  453. some time,

  454. but the interesting thing

  455. that that passage says

  456. is that she was

  457. mourning her virginity.

  458. She was sad

  459. because she wasn't

  460. going to have children.

  461. I would have thought

  462. she would have been sad

  463. for the loss of her life.

  464. I would have thought

  465. that she would be mourning

  466. that she is going to die

  467. in a month from now

  468. rather than

  469. to say sad,

  470. I'll never have children

  471. in my life.

  472. I suspect,

  473. although we do not have

  474. any evidence,

  475. the text is very ambiguous,

  476. I suspect

  477. what happened

  478. is that,

  479. like Hannah,

  480. he had to dedicate her

  481. to the service of God

  482. in the tabernacle

  483. and what's so bad

  484. about that

  485. is that you could

  486. never marry

  487. and since he is

  488. the son of a prostitute

  489. and he doesn't have

  490. any sons,

  491. what has happened

  492. to his family line?

  493. That's the end.

  494. But in any case,

  495. what we have here

  496. is a man

  497. who makes

  498. a very foolish vow

  499. who should know better

  500. than to make vows

  501. like that.

  502. But there is

  503. another problem

  504. and the problem

  505. is in

  506. Judges chapter 12,

    Judges 12 chapter mention

  507. his other problem.

  508. Look at chapter 12.

  509. Perhaps the first

  510. three verses.

  511. The men of Ephraim

  512. called out

  513. their forces,

  514. crossed over to Zaphon

  515. and said to Jephthah,

  516. why did you go

  517. to fight the Ammonites

  518. without calling us

  519. to go with you?

  520. We're going to burn

  521. down your house

  522. over your head.

  523. What is happening

  524. is that he went to war

  525. without asking them

  526. to come with him?

  527. The dictum of war

  528. is what?

  529. To the victor

  530. belongs the spoils.

  531. Those who fight

  532. in battle

  533. get to take

  534. the spoils of war.

  535. So if you didn't

  536. fight in the battle,

  537. guess what you don't

  538. get to get?

  539. The spoils of war.

  540. So they're asking him,

  541. they're upset with him,

  542. why didn't you

  543. take us with you?

  544. This way we would

  545. get something as well.

  546. You deprived us

  547. of an opportunity

  548. to make some wealth

  549. here.

  550. and he answers

  551. them by saying,

  552. well,

  553. you didn't help me,

  554. et cetera, et cetera.

  555. And then take a look

  556. at the end

  557. of verse 6,

  558. toward the end

  559. of the 6.

  560. 42,000 Ephraimites

  561. were killed

  562. at that time.

  563. Because of his

  564. harsh answer,

  565. Israel went

  566. into a civil war.

  567. and in that

  568. civil war,

  569. between him

  570. and his allies

  571. and them,

  572. because of that

  573. civil war,

  574. 42,000 people

  575. were killed.

  576. That many

  577. were hurt

  578. because

  579. of the way

  580. he handled

  581. that situation.

  582. the irony

  583. of it

  584. is chapter 8.

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  585. So take a look

  586. at chapter 8.

  587. The same

  588. situation,

  589. the same

  590. exact situation,

  591. but with a

  592. different judge.

  593. Now,

  594. the Ephraimites

  595. asked Gideon,

  596. why have you

  597. treated us

  598. like this?

  599. Why didn't you

  600. call us

  601. when you went

  602. to fight Midian?

  603. You know,

  604. you didn't take us

  605. with you to war,

  606. we didn't make

  607. any profit.

  608. So,

  609. just as they

  610. were challenging

  611. Jephthah

  612. later on,

  613. they're challenging

  614. Gideon

  615. right now.

  616. Why didn't

  617. you call us

  618. when we went

  619. to fight Midian?

  620. And they

  621. criticized him

  622. sharply.

  623. But he

  624. answered them,

  625. what have I

  626. accomplished

  627. compared to you?

  628. Aren't the

  629. gleanings

  630. of Ephraim's

  631. grapes

  632. better than

  633. the full

  634. grape harvest

  635. of Abiezar?

  636. I'd have

  637. to explain

  638. that.

  639. God

  640. gave

  641. Ghorab

  642. and Ziv,

  643. the Midianite

  644. leaders,

  645. into your

  646. hands?

  647. What was

  648. I able

  649. to do

  650. compared

  651. to you?

  652. At this,

  653. their resentment

  654. against him

  655. subsided.

  656. to put it

  657. in simple

  658. English,

  659. they said,

  660. why didn't

  661. you take

  662. us to

  663. war?

  664. Don't

  665. you realize

  666. that we

  667. lost

  668. benefits,

  669. et cetera,

  670. et cetera?

  671. And he

  672. says,

  673. what did

  674. I

  675. accomplish?

  676. So,

  677. I defeated

  678. them.

  679. But look

  680. at my

  681. accomplishments.

  682. My

  683. accomplishments

  684. compared to

  685. you

  686. is like

  687. nothing.

  688. You could

  689. accomplish

  690. more

  691. in coma

  692. than I

  693. could

  694. accomplish

  695. in 10

  696. years.

  697. I can't

  698. even begin

  699. to compare

  700. to you.

  701. I can't

  702. even start

  703. to look

  704. at myself

  705. and yours.

  706. You are

  707. that much

  708. better.

  709. You're

  710. that much

  711. skilled.

  712. You're

  713. that much

  714. everything.

  715. And so,

  716. they

  717. relented.

  718. And the

  719. resentment

  720. was gone.

  721. So,

  722. one

  723. answer

  724. resulted

  725. in resentment

  726. but it

  727. was averted.

  728. Another

  729. answer

  730. resulted

  731. in a

  732. civil war

  733. that took

  734. 42,000

  735. voices.

  736. Maybe

  737. the point

  738. is Proverbs

    Proverbs 15:1

  739. 15,

  740. verse 1.

  741. Please

  742. take a

  743. look at

  744. Proverbs

    Proverbs 15:1

  745. 15,

  746. verse 1.

  747. A gentle

  748. answer

  749. turns away

  750. wrath

  751. but a

  752. harsh word

  753. stirs up

  754. anger.

  755. Verse 18,

  756. a hot

  757. tempered

  758. man

  759. stirs up

  760. dissension

  761. but a

  762. patient

  763. man

  764. calms

  765. a

  766. quarrel.

  767. Jephthah

  768. never

  769. became a

  770. second

  771. David

  772. or a

  773. first

  774. David

  775. because

  776. of the

  777. ways he

  778. used

  779. words.

  780. In

  781. one

  782. case,

  783. he

  784. takes a

  785. foolish

  786. vow.

  787. in

  788. another

  789. case,

  790. he

  791. stirs

  792. up

  793. wrath

  794. and

  795. anger

  796. and

  797. civil

  798. war.

  799. We

  800. all,

  801. all of

  802. us,

  803. should

  804. listen

  805. seriously

  806. to

  807. Proverbs

  808. 15,

  809. 1.

  810. A

  811. gentle

  812. answer

  813. turns

  814. away

  815. wrath

  816. but a

  817. harsh

  818. word

  819. stirs

  820. up

  821. anger.

  822. I

  823. am

  824. sure

  825. that

  826. in

  827. this

  828. church

  829. some

  830. will

  831. agree

  832. with

  833. the

  834. elders,

  835. some

  836. will

  837. disagree

  838. with

  839. elders,

  840. et cetera,

  841. et cetera.

  842. It

  843. doesn't

  844. matter

  845. what

  846. you

  847. think.

  848. I

  849. mean,

  850. it

  851. does

  852. matter,

  853. of

  854. course

  855. it

  856. matters,

  857. but

  858. what

  859. I

  860. mean,

  861. it

  862. doesn't

  863. matter

  864. in

  865. relationship

  866. to

  867. this.

  868. We

  869. need

  870. to

  871. be

  872. gentle

  873. and

  874. kind

  875. with

  876. each

  877. other.

  878. We

  879. need

  880. to

  881. use

  882. gentle

  883. words

  884. and

  885. kindness

  886. rather

  887. than

  888. harsh

  889. words.

  890. James

  891. talks

  892. about

  893. the

  894. power

  895. of

  896. the

  897. tongue.

  898. He

  899. compares

  900. it

  901. to

  902. the

  903. rudder

  904. of

  905. a

  906. ship.

  907. The

  908. ship

  909. is

  910. huge

  911. and

  912. it

  913. takes

  914. the

  915. winds

  916. to

  917. move

  918. it,

  919. but

  920. it's

  921. the

  922. rudder

  923. that

  924. directs

  925. its

  926. direction.

  927. You

  928. push

  929. it

  930. this

  931. way,

  932. the

  933. ship

  934. turns

  935. like

  936. this,

  937. you

  938. push

  939. it

  940. that

  941. way,

  942. the

  943. ship

  944. takes

  945. like

  946. that.

  947. It's

  948. a

  949. simple

  950. rudder

  951. that

  952. directs

  953. the

  954. whole

  955. ship.

  956. The

  957. tongue

  958. is

  959. also

  960. compared

  961. to

  962. matches.

  963. They

  964. start

  965. fire and

  966. they

  967. can

  968. burn

  969. down

  970. whole

  971. forests.

  972. Those

  973. of us

  974. who

  975. lived

  976. in

  977. California

  978. or

  979. are

  980. keeping

  981. up

  982. with

  983. the

  984. news

  985. in

  986. California

  987. know

  988. of

  989. the

  990. fires

  991. taking

  992. place

  993. in

  994. California.

  995. Tongues

  996. can

  997. change

  998. direction

  999. of

  1000. things.

  1001. Tongues

  1002. can

  1003. burn

  1004. whole

  1005. forests.

  1006. So

  1007. I

  1008. would

  1009. encourage

  1010. all

  1011. of

  1012. us

  1013. to

  1014. opt

  1015. for

  1016. a

  1017. gentle

  1018. answer

  1019. rather

  1020. than

  1021. a

  1022. harsh

  1023. word.

  1024. Let's

  1025. try not

  1026. to

  1027. start

  1028. a

  1029. fire.

  1030. Let's

  1031. try

  1032. to be

  1033. kind

  1034. and

  1035. gracious.

  1036. Not

  1037. to

  1038. end

  1039. up

  1040. with

  1041. a

  1042. civil

  1043. war

  1044. but

  1045. to

  1046. deal

  1047. in

  1048. a

  1049. kind

  1050. way

  1051. that

  1052. you

  1053. can

  1054. move

  1055. resentment.

  1056. One

  1057. last

  1058. thing

  1059. you

  1060. should

  1061. look

  1062. at

  1063. you

  1064. should

  1065. notice

  1066. in

  1067. Jephthah's

  1068. narrative

  1069. is this

  1070. with

  1071. every

  1072. judge

  1073. it

  1074. says

  1075. the

  1076. land

  1077. had

  1078. rest

  1079. after

  1080. his

  1081. victory.

  1082. No

  1083. rest

  1084. is

  1085. mentioned

  1086. here.

  1087. No

  1088. rest.

  1089. A

  1090. civil

  1091. war

  1092. it's

  1093. one

  1094. thing

  1095. if you

  1096. attack

  1097. Egyptians

  1098. it's

  1099. one

  1100. thing

  1101. if you

  1102. attack

  1103. the

  1104. Greeks

  1105. or

  1106. the

  1107. Phoenicians

  1108. or

  1109. the

  1110. Amorites

  1111. but

  1112. when

  1113. you

  1114. attack

  1115. your

  1116. own

  1117. family

  1118. and

  1119. you

  1120. cause

  1121. a

  1122. civil

  1123. war

  1124. that's

  1125. another

  1126. story.

  1127. Let's have a word of

  1128. prayer.

  1129. Thank you

  1130. father that you

  1131. use people

  1132. who are

  1133. not

  1134. accepted

  1135. in society

  1136. people

  1137. who are

  1138. seen as

  1139. illegitimate

  1140. as

  1141. inferior

  1142. as

  1143. having no

  1144. position

  1145. or no

  1146. right to

  1147. anything

  1148. thank you

  1149. that that's

  1150. not how

  1151. you deal

  1152. with us.

  1153. none

  1154. of us

  1155. was saved

  1156. because

  1157. we're

  1158. good.

  1159. None

  1160. of us

  1161. was saved

  1162. because

  1163. we're

  1164. noble.

  1165. None

  1166. of us

  1167. was saved

  1168. because

  1169. we deserved

  1170. it.

  1171. We

  1172. were all

  1173. saved

  1174. because

  1175. your

  1176. grace

  1177. extended

  1178. to us

  1179. and reached

  1180. us.

  1181. We

  1182. have no

  1183. business

  1184. boasting

  1185. about

  1186. anything

  1187. we have

  1188. accomplished.

  1189. We

  1190. have

  1191. accomplished

  1192. nothing.

  1193. It

  1194. is

  1195. your

  1196. grace

  1197. and

  1198. your

  1199. Holy

  1200. Spirit

  1201. that

  1202. works

  1203. in our

  1204. lives.

  1205. And so

  1206. we are

  1207. grateful

  1208. for that.

  1209. We

  1210. thank you

  1211. that it

  1212. is not

  1213. on the

  1214. basis

  1215. of

  1216. merits

  1217. but

  1218. it

  1219. is

  1220. on the

  1221. basis

  1222. of

  1223. your

  1224. enormous

  1225. generosity

  1226. and

  1227. love.

  1228. So

  1229. we

  1230. are

  1231. filled

  1232. with

  1233. gratitude

  1234. for

  1235. your

  1236. salvation.

  1237. I

  1238. pray

  1239. Father

  1240. for

  1241. this

  1242. congregation

  1243. that

  1244. even

  1245. as

  1246. we

  1247. learn

  1248. to

  1249. love

  1250. you

  1251. and

  1252. to

  1253. continue

  1254. to

  1255. grow

  1256. in

  1257. loving

  1258. you

  1259. we

  1260. would

  1261. also

  1262. be

  1263. able

  1264. to

  1265. continue

  1266. to

  1267. grow

  1268. and

  1269. loving

  1270. and

  1271. caring

  1272. about

  1273. each

  1274. other

  1275. whether

  1276. we

  1277. agree

  1278. or

  1279. don't

  1280. agree

  1281. whether

  1282. we

  1283. see

  1284. things

  1285. the

  1286. same

  1287. way

  1288. or

  1289. not

  1290. whether

  1291. we

  1292. are

  1293. Republicans

  1294. or

  1295. Democrats
