  1. Children, you are now dismissed to your Sunday school class.

  2. You're going to be learning about your promise-making and promise-keeping God.

  3. This November, last week, we started a series,

  4. Hardship, Holiness, and Our Loving Heavenly Father.

  5. And last week, we looked at the book of Lamentations,

  6. and specifically Lamentations 3, where Jeremiah was in the midst of some severe hardship,

  7. and yet he says this,

  8. But this I call to mind, and therefore have hope.

  9. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.

  10. His mercies never come to an end.

  11. They're new every morning.

  12. Great is your faithfulness.

  13. The Lord is my portion, I said, therefore I will have hope.

  14. Jeremiah had hope in the hardship, because he believed his God was for him.

  15. And this morning, we're going to be looking at another passage about hardship.

  16. James 1, verses 2-4.

    James 1:2–4

  17. So if you want to open up your Bibles to the book of James,

  18. it's towards the end of your New Testament.

  19. Chapter 1, verses 2-4.

  20. Where Jeremiah 3 is about hope in hardship,

  21. James 1, verses 2-4 is about joy in hardship.

    James 1:2–4

  22. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.

  23. Now, this, what I'm about to say, may be a gross oversimplification.

  24. But typically, when a human being encounters difficulty,

  25. hardship, when they are drawn out of their comfort zone,

  26. typically a human being will respond in one of two ways, fight or flight.

  27. Fighters put up their dukes, and they say,

  28. Okay, who's to blame?

  29. Flighters look for cover and wait until the all-clear is sounded.

  30. But a Christian has a third option.

  31. It's not fight.

  32. It's not flight.

  33. It's faith.

  34. Faith in our God.

  35. A Christian, one confronted with difficulty,

  36. must resist the natural instinct to fight or flight

  37. and choose to trust in God.

  38. And Lamentations 3, trusting God in hardship, shows up as hope.

  39. And James 1, trusting God in hardship, shows up as joy.

  40. Count it all joy.

  41. So here's what I believe God is telling us this morning from James 1, 2-4.

  42. Here's what I want you to see.

  43. When trials come knocking,

  44. we welcome them with joy because we trust in our God.

  45. When trials come knocking,

  46. we welcome them with joy because we trust in our God.

  47. It sounds crazy, doesn't it?

  48. We must be believing truth about God when we encounter trials.

  49. Let me just read this passage.

  50. Count it all joy, my brothers,

  51. when you meet trials of various kinds,

  52. for you know that this testing of your faith produces steadfastness,

  53. and let steadfastness have its full effect,

  54. that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

  55. This morning we're going to look at three things.

  56. First is the command.

  57. There is a command here in James 1, 2.

  58. Count it all joy.

  59. We're going to look at the command,

  60. and then we're going to look at the rationale for the command.

  61. This command begs the question, why?

  62. And James answers that in verses 3 and 4.

  63. So we're going to look at the command,

  64. and then we're going to look at the rationale.

  65. And our last move together,

  66. I want to gird up your mind

  67. for the trials that are coming this week.

  68. You're going to be facing them.

  69. We all are.

  70. And so three moves,

  71. command, the rationale,

  72. and then by way of application,

  73. girding up your mind for the trials to come this week.

  74. So first, let's look at this command in 1, 2.

  75. Count it all joy, my brothers,

  76. when you meet trials of various kinds.

  77. I mean, we are being commanded

  78. to be joyful in the midst of trials,

  79. to have joy in suffering,

  80. joy in hardship,

  81. joy in confusion.

  82. Does that sound crazy to you?

  83. Well, there's a context

  84. in which this command is coming.

  85. Trials.

  86. What does James mean by trials?

  87. Well, the word that is used here

  88. is translated one of two ways

  89. in the New Testament.

  90. The first way that this word is translated

  91. is it means an outward trial,

  92. a process of testing

  93. that comes upon us from the outside.

  94. God brings the trial.

  95. The second way that this word is translated

  96. is an inner temptation,

  97. an enticement to sin

  98. that doesn't come from without,

  99. but it comes from within,

  100. out of my own heart,

  101. out of your heart.

  102. This leads us to a very important distinction to make.

  103. God tests us,

  104. but He doesn't tempt us.

  105. God brings trials,

  106. but He doesn't make us sin.

  107. Our own desires are what tempt us,

  108. and we see that played out

  109. in verses 1 through 13,

  110. excuse me, 13 and 14

  111. in chapter 1 of James.

  112. So in verse 2 here,

  113. what is very clear

  114. is that this is a trial

  115. that God is bringing to test us,

  116. the trials.

  117. And verse 3 confirms that.

  118. So verse 2,

  119. when you meet trials of various kinds,

  120. and verse 3,

  121. for you know that the testing of your faith

  122. produces steadfastness.

  123. When God tests us through trials,

  124. He's not trying to make us sin.

  125. He's seeking to make us more holy.

  126. God's responsible for the trial,

  127. but He's not responsible for

  128. how we respond to it.

  129. He doesn't take responsibility

  130. for our desires in that.

  131. So what I want you to see

  132. coming out of this little piece here

  133. is that all trials

  134. are challenging opportunities

  135. God sends to mature us.

  136. They're redemptive in nature.

  137. They're purposed.

  138. And what we learn here from James

  139. is that they vary in form and intensity.

  140. You see the words in verse 2,

  141. when you meet trials of various kinds?

  142. Various kinds of trials.

  143. Some trials are simple.

  144. Some trials are complex.

  145. Some trials are mild.

  146. Some trials are intense.

  147. Some trials are brief.

  148. Some trials are extended.

  149. Some trials are unique to Christians.

  150. We suffer for Jesus' name.

  151. Some trials are common to all.

  152. Living in a fallen world.

  153. We all deal with loneliness,

  154. sickness, disappointment,

  155. broken cars, unexpected bills

  156. when a loved one dies.

  157. Some trials are very personal.

  158. Other trials are communal.

  159. Are corporate.

  160. We've been going through some trials

  161. as a church.

  162. When trials are complex,

  163. intense, extended trials,

  164. these are the very most difficult kind.

  165. They can be unsettling,

  166. uncomfortable,

  167. and unpredictable.

  168. But one thing we know

  169. is that these various trials

  170. are coming.

  171. Now, if this is true,

  172. if God sends trials for our good,

  173. and there are a variety of kinds of trials,

  174. we're dealing with trials

  175. on a frequent basis.

  176. God is challenging us

  177. on a regular basis to grow us.

  178. He's not waiting for us to ask Him.

  179. He brings them for our good.

  180. Life is one trial after the next,

  181. isn't it?

  182. And sometimes,

  183. trials come in clusters.

  184. But what we see here

  185. is that trials

  186. are normal.

  187. I'm so grateful for

  188. John Bunyan's book,

  189. Pilgrim's Progress.

  190. It's a classic.

  191. It's one of the most published books

  192. in all of history.

  193. There's also a children's version

  194. called Dangerous Journey.

  195. And if you're a parent with young ones,

  196. it is a great book.

  197. We have so benefited

  198. from that book.

  199. If you're not familiar

  200. with the story,

  201. John Bunyan has written a tale,

  202. a depiction of the Christian life.

  203. And it is encouraging

  204. and very helpful.

  205. The story is about

  206. the main character, Christian,

  207. and his journey

  208. from the city of destruction

  209. to the celestial city,

  210. heaven.

  211. And very wisely,

  212. Bunyan shows that

  213. through this story

  214. that the Christian life

  215. is marked by regular trials

  216. of various kinds.

  217. I mean,

  218. Christian goes through

  219. the slew of despond.

  220. Christian has to navigate

  221. Vanity Fair.

  222. Christian has to

  223. climb the hill difficulty.

  224. Christian has to square off

  225. on Apollyon

  226. and slog it out

  227. for a full day.

  228. And of course,

  229. Christian has to encounter,

  230. come face to face

  231. with the final trial,

  232. death.

  233. The Christian life

  234. is filled with trials.

  235. But you know what?

  236. It's not only about trials.

  237. Pilgrim's Progress

  238. is about joy

  239. in the midst of trials.

  240. And that's what

  241. the Christian life is too.

  242. Joy

  243. in the midst of trials.

  244. Trusting God

  245. through hard times.

  246. When trials come knocking

  247. at your door,

  248. how do you typically respond?

  249. No one's home.

  250. Go away.

  251. Not interested.

  252. Because we know

  253. that trials bring pain,

  254. right?

  255. When trials come knocking

  256. on your door,

  257. how do you respond?

  258. James is very clear

  259. in how we are to respond.

  260. Count it all joy,

  261. my brothers,

  262. when you meet trials

  263. of various kinds.

  264. various kinds.

  265. So let's look at this command.

  266. Here's what James

  267. is telling us.

  268. When trials come knocking,

  269. welcome them with joy.

  270. That word count

  271. in the ESV

  272. or consider

  273. in the NIV,

  274. it's a command

  275. not to feel.

  276. It's a command

  277. to think.

  278. Count it joy.

  279. Consider it joy.

  280. It's not about

  281. how you're to feel.

  282. It's about what you're to think.

  283. It's a call to think

  284. God's thoughts.

  285. Close to this word count

  286. and consider

  287. is the word appraise.

  288. Have you ever had

  289. an appraisal done

  290. on your car?

  291. See how much it's worth.

  292. Your house,

  293. see what it's worth.

  294. Jewelry,

  295. see what it's worth.

  296. What we are to appraise,

  297. what we're to count,

  298. is the word it.

  299. And what it refers to

  300. is hardship,

  301. trials,

  302. difficulty

  303. of various kinds.

  304. We're to appraise

  305. these things

  306. a certain way.

  307. All joy.

  308. What is joy?

  309. What is it?

  310. I want to help you with that.

  311. This is a little arbitrary,

  312. but I think it will help you.

  313. I want to make a distinction

  314. between what joy is

  315. and happiness is

  316. in order for you

  317. to get a sense

  318. of Christian joy.

  319. Joy

  320. is a settled contentment

  321. in the unchanging character

  322. of God.

  323. Joy

  324. is a settled contentment,

  325. a satisfaction

  326. in the unchanging character

  327. of God.

  328. It is not dependent

  329. on circumstances.

  330. Joy rests squarely

  331. on God.

  332. Happiness

  333. is finding contentment,

  334. satisfaction

  335. in circumstances.

  336. and we all know

  337. that circumstances

  338. change with a win.

  339. So,

  340. what's the difference

  341. between joy

  342. and happiness?

  343. The object of faith.

  344. What one is depending upon.

  345. Joy depends on God's

  346. constant,

  347. unchanging character.

  348. Happiness depends

  349. on constantly

  350. changing circumstances.

  351. And so,

  352. if you're to graph them,

  353. if you're to graph happiness,

  354. happiness would be up and down

  355. following circumstances.

  356. Anybody relate with that?

  357. Joy

  358. would be constant

  359. as God's character

  360. is constant.

  361. As you learn Him

  362. and understand Him

  363. and know how wonderful

  364. He is,

  365. it's constant

  366. even in the midst

  367. of difficult circumstances.

  368. So,

  369. this is what God

  370. is commanding us.

  371. When trials come knocking,

  372. welcome them

  373. with a joy

  374. grounded

  375. in

  376. God.

  377. James is not saying

  378. take joy

  379. in the hardship

  380. for the hardship's sake.

  381. What James is saying

  382. is take joy

  383. in the hardship

  384. because God

  385. is going to do something

  386. through it

  387. for your good.

  388. So,

  389. we welcome

  390. trials with joy

  391. because our trust

  392. is in

  393. God.

  394. We appraise

  395. trials with joy

  396. in God.

  397. That's the command.

  398. Now,

  399. we've got to look

  400. at the rationale

  401. because it leaves us

  402. asking the question,

  403. why?

  404. Why are we

  405. to take joy

  406. in trials?

  407. Why?

  408. Why?

  409. And James

  410. provides the rationale

  411. in verses 3 and 4.

  412. He says,

  413. this is why

  414. we welcome

  415. trials with joy.

  416. Now,

  417. I know that

  418. it kind of sounds

  419. crazy to take joy

  420. in trials,

  421. but when you

  422. walk through

  423. and understand

  424. James' rationale,

  425. it actually

  426. makes sense.

  427. So,

  428. we've looked

  429. at the command.

  430. Let's look

  431. at the rationale

  432. why we welcome

  433. trials with joy.

  434. And the first thing

  435. I want to draw

  436. to your attention

  437. is the first word

  438. of verse 3.

  439. It's the word

  440. for in the ESV

  441. or in the NIV

  442. it's the word

  443. because.

  444. This clues us

  445. into the fact

  446. that James

  447. is going to give us

  448. reasons for welcoming

  449. trials with joy.

  450. And he says this,

  451. for you know,

  452. because you know.

  453. Again,

  454. James is appealing

  455. to our minds,

  456. not our emotions.

  457. What he started

  458. in verse 2,

  459. count it all joy,

  460. appraise it,

  461. think about it this way.

  462. He continues

  463. in verse 3.

  464. He's not appealing

  465. to our emotions.

  466. He's appealing

  467. to our minds.

  468. He wants us

  469. to think rightly

  470. about trials

  471. in relationship

  472. to who God is.

  473. And so,

  474. let me help you

  475. see the rationale.

  476. Three things here.

  477. The purpose of trials,

  478. the immediate result

  479. of trials,

  480. and the long-term

  481. goal of trials.

  482. We see that laid out

  483. in verses 3 and 4.

  484. So let me just

  485. draw it out for you.

  486. The purpose of trials.

  487. Verse 3.

  488. For you know

  489. that the testing

  490. of your faith.

  491. Trials are not random.

  492. It may feel that way

  493. to us,

  494. but they're not.

  495. God is sovereign over it.

  496. He is bringing them

  497. for our good.

  498. God sends trials

  499. of various kinds

  500. to strengthen

  501. and refine

  502. our faith.

  503. It is a testing

  504. of faith.

  505. He wants to strengthen

  506. our faith.

  507. Do you know how

  508. to grow muscle mass?

  509. You go to the gym

  510. and you start

  511. lifting weights.

  512. And when you stretch

  513. your muscle

  514. a certain way,

  515. it starts to tear

  516. just a little bit.

  517. And you give it

  518. time to

  519. kind of

  520. respond

  521. and the actual

  522. muscle comes back

  523. with a greater mass.

  524. You're actually able

  525. to move more weight.

  526. It's strengthened,

  527. but there's pain

  528. in the stretch.

  529. No pain,

  530. no gain.

  531. But what we're talking

  532. about here

  533. is not just

  534. strengthening faith.

  535. It's refining faith.

  536. Heat

  537. refines things.

  538. Burns off

  539. dross.

  540. And what God

  541. is doing

  542. through trials

  543. is not only

  544. strengthening our faith,

  545. He's burning off

  546. impurities of our faith.

  547. Turning to different

  548. things that are not

  549. God

  550. when things get hard.

  551. God sends trials

  552. of various kinds

  553. to strengthen

  554. and refine our faith.

  555. And mind you,

  556. this is not a faith

  557. in faith.

  558. This is not just

  559. to strengthen our faith

  560. so that we can have

  561. a strength in faith.

  562. It's faith in God.

  563. God sends trials

  564. to strengthen our faith

  565. in Him.

  566. To grow our trust

  567. in Him.

  568. Now,

  569. when we are confronted

  570. with a trial,

  571. when trials come knocking,

  572. we tend to focus

  573. on the trial.

  574. To feel the heat.

  575. To feel the pain.

  576. And what God does

  577. through a trial

  578. is to refocus

  579. our gaze

  580. on Him.

  581. Truth about Him.

  582. Glorious truth

  583. about Him.

  584. We see that played out

  585. in the Psalms

  586. over and over

  587. and over again.

  588. David encounters

  589. some kind of difficulty

  590. and he cries out

  591. to God.

  592. God,

  593. rock,

  594. my fortress,

  595. my shelter,

  596. I got people

  597. doing this,

  598. I got people

  599. doing that,

  600. I don't know

  601. what's going to happen,

  602. I'm poor and needy,

  603. I need help.

  604. Again and again

  605. we see

  606. David encountering

  607. difficulties

  608. and turning to his God.

  609. God's purpose

  610. for trials

  611. is to grow

  612. our faith

  613. in Him.

  614. They're not random,

  615. they're purposed.

  616. They're for our good.

  617. They're various

  618. and they're frequent.

  619. that's the first thing

  620. that James wants us

  621. to understand.

  622. His rationale.

  623. Trials are testings.

  624. God wanting to grow us.

  625. But it moves from testing

  626. to an immediate result.

  627. God tests us

  628. to bring about

  629. an immediate result.

  630. We see that

  631. in verse 3.

  632. For you know

  633. that the testing

  634. of your faith

  635. produces

  636. steadfastness.

  637. Think of steadfastness

  638. as a kind of faith.

  639. How faith shows up

  640. in a particular way.

  641. It's faith showing up

  642. in the midst

  643. of hard circumstances.

  644. It's the ability

  645. to endure

  646. when you are under pressure.

  647. To trust God

  648. when things get hot.

  649. To trust God

  650. when you get stretched.

  651. Trusting God

  652. in the midst

  653. of crisis.

  654. Okay,

  655. we're entering

  656. basketball season.

  657. Has any,

  658. who has seen

  659. a basketball game?

  660. Raise your hand.

  661. Just want to know

  662. what I'm working with here.

  663. Alright.

  664. There is this

  665. defensive play

  666. called a full court press.

  667. And what it is

  668. is the offense

  669. gets the ball

  670. underneath their basketball hoop

  671. and they need to get it

  672. down to the other

  673. basketball hoop.

  674. And so what the defense does

  675. is they come on

  676. strong and furious.

  677. They apply a lot

  678. of pressure.

  679. And the purpose

  680. of a full court press

  681. is to test the offense

  682. to see how they can handle it.

  683. And if you're watching

  684. this on TV

  685. and you see a full court press

  686. going on

  687. and you kind of focus in

  688. on the offensive player

  689. with the ball,

  690. what you'll see

  691. is one of two things.

  692. That offensive player

  693. is either going to panic

  694. or he's going to call to mind

  695. what his coach

  696. has told him

  697. and he's going to

  698. persevere through the press.

  699. He's going to break

  700. the press.

  701. He's going to be steadfast

  702. under trial.

  703. He's going to walk

  704. through it

  705. all the way through.

  706. When God brings trials,

  707. He's going to grow

  708. our steadfastness in Him.

  709. God delights

  710. in a steadfast faith.

  711. Steadfastness literally means

  712. to bear up under weight.

  713. Now the question

  714. we can ask is this,

  715. why does God like steadfastness?

  716. What does He like about it?

  717. Well, God is steadfast.

  718. He Himself is steadfast.

  719. The steadfast love of the Lord.

  720. He's an ever-present

  721. help in trouble.

  722. He is our rock.

  723. He is our fortress.

  724. But what I want you to see

  725. is if you turn your Bibles

  726. over maybe a page

  727. to the left

  728. to Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:1–3

  729. verses 1-3,

  730. we're going to see

  731. that steadfastness

  732. is Christ-like.

  733. So turn to Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:1–3

  734. verses 1-3.

  735. We read this,

  736. Therefore,

  737. since we are surrounded

  738. by so great a cloud

  739. of witnesses,

  740. pointing back to chapter 11,

  741. since we are surrounded

  742. by so great a cloud

  743. of witnesses,

  744. let us also

  745. lay aside every weight

  746. and sin

  747. which clings so closely

  748. and let us run

  749. with endurance.

  750. That is the same word

  751. translated steadfastness

  752. or perseverance

  753. in James 1.

  754. So let us run

  755. with steadfastness,

  756. the race that is set

  757. before us,

  758. looking to Jesus,

  759. the founder and perfecter

  760. of our faith,

  761. who for the joy

  762. that was set before Him

  763. endured the cross.

  764. Again,

  765. that's the word

  766. for steadfastness,

  767. perseverance,

  768. despising the shame

  769. and seated at the right hand

  770. of God.

  771. Jesus Christ

  772. endured the cross

  773. in order to save us.

  774. The joy of our salvation.

  775. Steadfastness,

  776. a steadfast faith

  777. is a Christ-like faith.

  778. In fact,

  779. He endured the cross

  780. so that we can be like Him

  781. when hardships come.

  782. The deal is

  783. the only way

  784. to grow

  785. in steadfastness

  786. is to go

  787. through trials.

  788. It's the immediate result.

  789. It's what God wants

  790. to get done in us

  791. when we encounter a trial.

  792. So we've looked at

  793. the purpose of trials.

  794. They test us

  795. to grow us.

  796. The immediate result

  797. is steadfastness,

  798. faith under pressure.

  799. The long-term goal

  800. comes in verse 4.

  801. If you look at it,

  802. verse 4,

  803. we see this.

  804. And let steadfastness

  805. have its full effect.

  806. That word full effect

  807. is getting at

  808. the long-term goal

  809. of trials.

  810. What God is seeking

  811. to get done

  812. in the long haul.

  813. You see,

  814. steadfastness

  815. is not an end

  816. unto itself.

  817. God brings trials,

  818. grows steadfastness

  819. over and over

  820. and over again

  821. in order to get

  822. something greater done

  823. in a long-term goal.

  824. And you know

  825. what that's called?

  826. Maturity.

  827. The way that James

  828. talks about it

  829. is like this.

  830. And let steadfastness

  831. have its full effect

  832. that you may be

  833. perfect and complete,

  834. lacking in nothing.

  835. Perfect and complete,

  836. lacking in nothing.

  837. And we all know

  838. that the day we see Jesus,

  839. it's all perfect.

  840. Sin is gone.

  841. No more trials.

  842. What James is getting

  843. at specifically here

  844. is the maturity

  845. that comes over time.

  846. As we experience trials,

  847. as we respond

  848. with a steadfast faith

  849. over and over,

  850. that produces maturity.

  851. And he describes it

  852. positively and negatively.

  853. Positively,

  854. he describes it as

  855. perfect and complete.

  856. That word perfect

  857. can also be understood

  858. as mature

  859. and complete.

  860. That word means

  861. well-rounded.

  862. You know what the fruit

  863. of the Spirit is?

  864. Love, joy, peace,

  865. patience, kindness,

  866. goodness, gentleness,

  867. faithfulness,

  868. and self-control.

  869. Just imagine

  870. all this fruit

  871. of the Spirit

  872. showing up

  873. in fuller and fuller

  874. measure

  875. in every area

  876. of your life.

  877. Every relationship.

  878. Every situation.

  879. Growing in greater

  880. and greater measure.

  881. He's going to round you out

  882. and make you complete.

  883. Negatively, he says,

  884. lacking in nothing.

  885. Not having a distracted focus.

  886. Your undistracted focus

  887. on Jesus.

  888. An unblemished character.

  889. When we put this stuff together,

  890. perfect, complete,

  891. lacking in nothing,

  892. and you know what?

  893. It starts kind of

  894. sounding like Jesus.

  895. The long-term goal

  896. our Father has

  897. for trials

  898. is to make us like Jesus.

  899. Mature.

  900. The rationale James

  901. is laying out here

  902. is a process

  903. in which God

  904. uses trials

  905. to stretch

  906. and refine

  907. our faith

  908. to grow us

  909. over time

  910. to be more

  911. and more

  912. like Jesus.

  913. Progressively

  914. making His children

  915. holy.

  916. Trials are an essential tool.

  917. Trials are necessary

  918. to that end.

  919. Our Heavenly Father

  920. wants us to

  921. share in His holiness.

  922. We'll see that next week

  923. out of Hebrews 12.

  924. He wants us to share

  925. in His holiness

  926. so much

  927. that He employs

  928. various kinds

  929. of trials

  930. to refine us.

  931. He values our holiness

  932. more than our comfort.

  933. In other words,

  934. God considers

  935. trials

  936. good for us.

  937. So,

  938. having seen

  939. the rationale

  940. that we are to

  941. consider

  942. trials

  943. joy

  944. because

  945. God's testing us,

  946. He's seeking

  947. to produce

  948. steadfastness,

  949. and the long-term goal

  950. is Christ-like maturity,

  951. because of that,

  952. because we see that,

  953. we know that,

  954. we can have joy.

  955. That when trials

  956. come knocking,

  957. we can welcome them

  958. with joy

  959. because God

  960. is using them

  961. for our good

  962. even when they

  963. involve a lot of pain.

  964. When

  965. hardship,

  966. trials

  967. come knocking,

  968. we welcome them

  969. with joy

  970. because we trust

  971. in our God.

  972. so we've looked

  973. at the command,

  974. we've looked

  975. at the rationale,

  976. now I want

  977. to gird your mind

  978. up for this week.

  979. I want

  980. to help you

  981. think a certain way

  982. because you're

  983. going to encounter

  984. trials

  985. of various kinds

  986. this week.

  987. When you

  988. encounter

  989. a trial,

  990. when the heat

  991. goes up,

  992. when you feel

  993. the stretch,

  994. when you start

  995. sensing pain,

  996. when you

  997. encounter

  998. a trial,

  999. you need

  1000. to fight

  1001. for joy.

  1002. And the way

  1003. you fight

  1004. for joy

  1005. is by calling

  1006. to mind

  1007. to consider

  1008. for we know

  1009. we call

  1010. to mind

  1011. truth

  1012. about our

  1013. God

  1014. in relationship

  1015. to the trial.

  1016. You fight

  1017. for joy

  1018. by calling

  1019. to mind

  1020. three truths

  1021. about God.

  1022. You ready?

  1023. God is

  1024. over it.

  1025. God is

  1026. in it.

  1027. And God

  1028. is using

  1029. it for our

  1030. good.

  1031. Will you say

  1032. it with me?

  1033. God is

  1034. over it.

  1035. God is

  1036. in it.

  1037. God is

  1038. using it

  1039. for our

  1040. good.

  1041. Over it,

  1042. in it,

  1043. through it.

  1044. Over it,

  1045. in it,

  1046. through it.

  1047. When you

  1048. encounter a

  1049. trial,

  1050. what comes

  1051. to mind?

  1052. God is

  1053. over it,

  1054. this trial,

  1055. He's in

  1056. this trial,

  1057. and He's

  1058. using this

  1059. trial for

  1060. my good.

  1061. He's

  1062. over it.

  1063. This is

  1064. not random.

  1065. This is

  1066. not some

  1067. freakish

  1068. random

  1069. event.

  1070. But God

  1071. is sovereign

  1072. over it.

  1073. Ephesians

  1074. 1.22

  1075. God has

  1076. placed all

  1077. things under

  1078. the feet

  1079. of Jesus.

  1080. All

  1081. things.

  1082. He reigns

  1083. over it.

  1084. God is

  1085. sovereign.

  1086. sovereign.

  1087. It may

  1088. not feel

  1089. that way

  1090. when you

  1091. first encounter

  1092. a trial,

  1093. but that's

  1094. why we

  1095. call this

  1096. to mind.

  1097. Our God

  1098. is a

  1099. sovereign

  1100. God.

  1101. Our

  1102. trials

  1103. don't

  1104. reign over

  1105. our

  1106. God.

  1107. Our

  1108. God

  1109. reigns

  1110. over

  1111. our

  1112. trials.

  1113. He's

  1114. over it,

  1115. and God

  1116. is in

  1117. it.

  1118. God

  1119. is in

  1120. it

  1121. with

  1122. me.

  1123. God

  1124. is in

  1125. it

  1126. with

  1127. you.

  1128. He's

  1129. in it

  1130. with

  1131. us.

  1132. He

  1133. hasn't

  1134. left

  1135. us.

  1136. He'll

  1137. never

  1138. leave

  1139. us

  1140. nor

  1141. forsake

  1142. us.

  1143. God

  1144. is

  1145. right

  1146. here,

  1147. right

  1148. now,

  1149. and is

  1150. committed

  1151. to us

  1152. as ever.

  1153. He has

  1154. given us

  1155. His Son.

  1156. How will

  1157. He not

  1158. also give

  1159. us everything

  1160. we need

  1161. even when

  1162. we encounter

  1163. trials?

  1164. He's an

  1165. ever-present

  1166. help in

  1167. time of

  1168. trial.

  1169. He

  1170. loves

  1171. us,

  1172. and He's

  1173. not

  1174. going to

  1175. leave

  1176. us

  1177. hanging

  1178. when

  1179. we

  1180. go

  1181. through

  1182. a

  1183. trial

  1184. He

  1185. sends

  1186. for

  1187. our

  1188. good.

  1189. He's

  1190. with

  1191. us

  1192. in

  1193. it.

  1194. I

  1195. love

  1196. this

  1197. verse.

  1198. Isaiah

  1199. 41.10

  1200. Fear

  1201. not,

  1202. for I

  1203. am

  1204. with

  1205. you.

  1206. Be

  1207. not

  1208. dismayed,

  1209. for I

  1210. am

  1211. your

  1212. God.

  1213. I

  1214. will

  1215. strengthen

  1216. you.

  1217. I

  1218. will

  1219. help

  1220. you.

  1221. I

  1222. will

  1223. uphold

  1224. you

  1225. with

  1226. my

  1227. righteous

  1228. right

  1229. hand.

  1230. I

  1231. have

  1232. set

  1233. the

  1234. Lord

  1235. always

  1236. before

  1237. me

  1238. because

  1239. He

  1240. is

  1241. at

  1242. my

  1243. right

  1244. hand.

  1245. I

  1246. will

  1247. not

  1248. be

  1249. shaken.

  1250. God

  1251. is

  1252. in

  1253. it.

  1254. He's

  1255. with

  1256. us.

  1257. He's

  1258. over

  1259. it.

  1260. He's

  1261. in

  1262. it.

  1263. And

  1264. He's

  1265. working

  1266. through

  1267. it.

  1268. You

  1269. know,

  1270. we can

  1271. overplay

  1272. Romans

  1273. 8.28.

  1274. We

  1275. can

  1276. slap

  1277. that on

  1278. hardship

  1279. like

  1280. whatever.

  1281. Alright,

  1282. go have

  1283. a merry

  1284. day.

  1285. But

  1286. it's

  1287. true.

  1288. God

  1289. does

  1290. work

  1291. all

  1292. things

  1293. out

  1294. for

  1295. the

  1296. good

  1297. of

  1298. those

  1299. who

  1300. love

  1301. Him

  1302. and

  1303. have

  1304. been

  1305. called

  1306. according

  1307. to

  1308. His

  1309. purpose.

  1310. And

  1311. all

  1312. things

  1313. includes

  1314. trials.

  1315. He's

  1316. working

  1317. it

  1318. for

  1319. our

  1320. good.

  1321. So

  1322. when

  1323. we

  1324. encounter

  1325. a

  1326. trial,

  1327. if

  1328. I

  1329. know

  1330. that

  1331. God

  1332. is

  1333. going

  1334. to

  1335. work

  1336. through

  1337. it,

  1338. I

  1339. can

  1340. welcome

  1341. it.

  1342. With

  1343. joy.

  1344. Because

  1345. I

  1346. know

  1347. that

  1348. God

  1349. is

  1350. going

  1351. to

  1352. refine

  1353. me

  1354. so

  1355. I

  1356. can

  1357. share

  1358. in

  1359. His

  1360. holiness.

  1361. So

  1362. the

  1363. question

  1364. becomes

  1365. when

  1366. we

  1367. encounter

  1368. a

  1369. trial,

  1370. not

  1371. okay,

  1372. who's

  1373. to

  1374. blame

  1375. or

  1376. take

  1377. cover,

  1378. it

  1379. is

  1380. this.

  1381. God,

  1382. how are

  1383. you

  1384. using

  1385. this

  1386. to

  1387. refine

  1388. me?

  1389. How

  1390. are

  1391. you

  1392. using

  1393. this

  1394. to

  1395. round

  1396. me

  1397. out

  1398. to

  1399. be

  1400. like

  1401. Jesus?

  1402. What

  1403. are you

  1404. doing,

  1405. God?

  1406. Help

  1407. me

  1408. to

  1409. see

  1410. it.

  1411. So

  1412. this

  1413. week,

  1414. maybe

  1415. you're

  1416. a

  1417. mom

  1418. of

  1419. a

  1420. two

  1421. year

  1422. old.

  1423. You're

  1424. going

  1425. to

  1426. have

  1427. some

  1428. trials.

  1429. God's

  1430. over it,

  1431. He's

  1432. in it,

  1433. and He's

  1434. through

  1435. it.

  1436. All

  1437. of us

  1438. are

  1439. going

  1440. to

  1441. count

  1442. on

  1443. trials.

  1444. Over

  1445. it,

  1446. in it,

  1447. through

  1448. it.

  1449. Over

  1450. it,

  1451. in it,

  1452. through

  1453. it.

  1454. Over

  1455. it,

  1456. in it,

  1457. through

  1458. it.

  1459. God

  1460. is

  1461. over

  1462. it,

  1463. God

  1464. is

  1465. in

  1466. it,

  1467. and

  1468. he's

  1469. working

  1470. for

  1471. our

  1472. good

  1473. through

  1474. it.

  1475. We

  1476. got

  1477. to

  1478. remember

  1479. it.

  1480. We

  1481. got

  1482. to

  1483. believe

  1484. it.

  1485. We

  1486. got

  1487. to

  1488. speak

  1489. it

  1490. to

  1491. ourselves

  1492. and

  1493. others,

  1494. and

  1495. then

  1496. we

  1497. get

  1498. to

  1499. enjoy

  1500. it.

  1501. We

  1502. count it

  1503. all

  1504. joy,

  1505. my

  1506. brothers

  1507. and

  1508. sisters,

  1509. when

  1510. we

  1511. meet

  1512. trials

  1513. of

  1514. various

  1515. kinds,

  1516. because

  1517. we are

  1518. confident

  1519. in our

  1520. God

  1521. who

  1522. has

  1523. our

  1524. good

  1525. in

  1526. mind.

  1527. Let

  1528. me

  1529. pray.

  1530. God,

  1531. we

  1532. are

  1533. so

  1534. grateful

  1535. that

  1536. you

  1537. are

  1538. a

  1539. God

  1540. who

  1541. is

  1542. over

  1543. it

  1544. and

  1545. in

  1546. it

  1547. and

  1548. working

  1549. through

  1550. it.

  1551. God,

  1552. we

  1553. thank

  1554. you

  1555. so

  1556. much

  1557. that

  1558. you

  1559. bring

  1560. trials.

  1561. We

  1562. are

  1563. able

  1564. to

  1565. rejoice

  1566. in

  1567. that

  1568. because

  1569. we

  1570. are

  1571. confident

  1572. that

  1573. you

  1574. are

  1575. sovereign,

  1576. that

  1577. you're

  1578. with

  1579. us,

  1580. and

  1581. that

  1582. you

  1583. have

  1584. good

  1585. purposes

  1586. for

  1587. us

  1588. through

  1589. the

  1590. trial.

  1591. God,

  1592. would

  1593. you

  1594. use

  1595. it

  1596. for

  1597. our

  1598. good?

  1599. Would

  1600. you

  1601. teach

  1602. us

  1603. and

  1604. strengthen

  1605. us?

  1606. Would

  1607. you

  1608. bring

  1609. to

  1610. our

  1611. attention

  1612. areas

  1613. that

  1614. must

  1615. change

  1616. in order

  1617. to be

  1618. like

  1619. Jesus?

  1620. God,

  1621. we

  1622. trust

  1623. you.

  1624. We

  1625. love

  1626. you.

  1627. We

  1628. know

  1629. that

  1630. you

  1631. don't

  1632. bring

  1633. these

  1634. things

  1635. upon

  1636. us

  1637. for

  1638. our

  1639. ill,

  1640. but

  1641. for

  1642. our

  1643. good.

  1644. So

  1645. God,

  1646. we

  1647. look to

  1648. you,

  1649. and we

  1650. say,

  1651. have

  1652. your

  1653. way.

  1654. We

  1655. trust

  1656. you.

  1657. Our

  1658. joy

  1659. is

  1660. in

  1661. you.

  1662. And

  1663. it's

  1664. the

  1665. name

  1666. of

  1667. Jesus

  1668. that

  1669. we

  1670. pray.

  1671. Amen.
