  1. Oh, great triune, God, you are our anchor to our souls individually and corporately.

  2. God, we need you desperately.

  3. God, we're so grateful that you are unshakable in who you are and unshakable in your commitment

  4. to us.

  5. Lord Jesus, you say that you are the source of living water.

  6. And this morning we come to you as a people who are thirsty.

  7. God, I pray that this morning you would call out a people from the desolate, parched places

  8. of trusting in man.

  9. And God, you would call them to the oasis where there is the fountain of living water,

  10. Jesus himself.

  11. You beckon us, come.

  12. God, would you use your word to beckon us to come.

  13. Pray this in Jesus' name.

  14. Amen.

  15. You may be seated.

  16. Children, you are now dismissed to learn about this great God.

  17. We're going to be looking at a passage in the book of Jeremiah.

  18. Jeremiah 17, verses 5-8.

    Jeremiah 17:5–8

  19. And if you're looking at one of the NIV, the blue Bible in your pew, turn to page 1201.

  20. I think that's what it is.

  21. I wrote it.

  22. So it's around 1200 somewhere.

  23. And if you're looking at the ESV, the white, it's page 546.

  24. We read,

  25. Thus says the Lord,

  26. Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength,

  27. whose heart turns away from the Lord.

  28. He is like a shrub in the desert and shall not see any good come.

  29. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,

  30. in an uninhabited salt land.

  31. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

  32. whose trust is the Lord.

  33. He's like a tree planted by water

  34. that sends out its roots by the stream

  35. and does not fear when heat comes,

  36. for its leaves remain green.

  37. It's not anxious in the year of drought,

  38. for it does not cease to bear fruit.

  39. O God, would you just please anoint your word this morning.

  40. Give us ears to hear, hearts to receive.

  41. God, address us as your children.

  42. In Jesus' name, amen.

  43. Well, if you think about American culture as a religion,

  44. who would be the object of worship?

  45. If our culture was teaching us to trust in someone,

  46. who would our culture be teaching us to trust in,

  47. to rely on?

  48. And when I mean by rely,

  49. I mean ultimate reliance.

  50. Whose voice are you ultimately obeying?

  51. Who is defining who you are?

  52. Who determines how you live your life?

  53. Who says what is the most dangerous thing you face?

  54. And who says the way of deliverance?

  55. Who says is our destiny and how we reach it?

  56. Whose voice are you ultimately relying on?

  57. If you think about American culture as a religion,

  58. Americans worship the triune God of me, myself, and I.

  59. We are an individualistic culture.

  60. We are a humanistic culture.

  61. We are raised to be self-reliant.

  62. And it shows up in whose voice we ultimately obey.

  63. Who defines us?

  64. How we walk?

  65. How we live?

  66. Another way to talk about this ultimate self-reliance

  67. is to call it trusting in man.

  68. That's how the prophet Jeremiah describes it in Jeremiah 17.

  69. To trust in man.

  70. It's the air we breathe.

  71. But it's just not outside of us.

  72. It's inside of us.

  73. This ultimate self-reliance,

  74. this ultimate trusting of man

  75. is like a taproot in us

  76. that goes down deep.

  77. It's called pride.

  78. We think we're at the center of everything.

  79. We oppose God at our very core.

  80. And what the Bible uses again and again

  81. is the word to describe our core

  82. is the word heart.

  83. And in Jeremiah 17.10,

  84. God says this.

  85. Now notice, it's God saying this.

  86. He says,

  87. the heart is deceitful above all things

  88. and desperately sick.

  89. You see, the self-reliance,

  90. the trusting in man

  91. that our culture prizes,

  92. even promotes,

  93. and even protects,

  94. has a fatal flaw.

  95. In our pride, we think we can define ourselves.

  96. We think we can

  97. make ourselves the ultimate authority.

  98. We think we know what's best for us.

  99. We think we can determine our own ways.

  100. In Jeremiah 17.5-8,

  101. we are presented with two groups of people.

  102. One group, those who trust in man,

  103. they have a motto.

  104. In man we trust.

  105. And then the other group,

  106. those who are God-reliant,

  107. those who trust in the Lord,

  108. their motto is,

  109. the Lord is our trust.

  110. Two groups of people with two mottos.

  111. In man we trust,

  112. and the Lord is our trust.

  113. Those who persistently trust in man

  114. experience God's curse.

  115. But those who trust

  116. ultimately rely again and again

  117. in the Lord,

  118. they experience God's blessing.

  119. So let's look at these two groups

  120. and what we'll see

  121. is that there are two ways to live.

  122. So first group,

  123. this in man we trust group.

  124. We see this described in verses 5 and 6.

  125. And what I want you to see

  126. as we talk about

  127. in man we trust this group,

  128. there are four realities about this

  129. I want you to see.

  130. Reality number one is,

  131. those who say in man we trust.

  132. That motto is built on lies.

  133. There's a fatal flaw.

  134. It assumes man can ultimately rely on man

  135. for ultimate answers.

  136. But let me just give you some data.

  137. According to the Bible,

  138. human beings are created.

  139. Not the creators.

  140. We are dependent.

  141. We are dependent on God

  142. for our next breath.

  143. We have some severe limitations.

  144. Significant limitations.

  145. Limited by place and time.

  146. We can't be more than one place at once.

  147. No matter how much we'd like.

  148. We're limited in our knowledge.

  149. We don't know everything.

  150. There's not one person

  151. on the face of the earth today

  152. that knows everything.

  153. And then if we kind of combined

  154. all human beings for all of time

  155. and then we measured how much we know,

  156. we still wouldn't know everything.

  157. Nor will we ever know everything.

  158. Limited in knowledge.

  159. Limited in power.

  160. Did anybody eat this morning?

  161. Did anybody sleep last night?

  162. We get worn out under fears and anxieties.

  163. When we make man our strength,

  164. human flesh our strength,

  165. man, we suffer for it.

  166. There's these limitations,

  167. but then there's also this

  168. deep-seated taproot of sin.

  169. This pride that goes down deep

  170. in each of us.

  171. It motivates us.

  172. It affects us.

  173. There's nothing that we do

  174. that is pure in motives

  175. because this sin runs so deep.

  176. And so at best,

  177. our motives for doing things

  178. are mixed.

  179. So human justice is mixed.

  180. That's why our government

  181. has checks and balances.

  182. Our love is mixed.

  183. It runs deep.

  184. So the lie here is that

  185. human beings

  186. have all the answers.

  187. We know what's best.

  188. The flail flaw is

  189. we don't.

  190. It's wrong to believe,

  191. biblically speaking,

  192. that the ultimate authority

  193. on all things is man.

  194. In man we trust

  195. is built on lies.

  196. It's built on something

  197. that can't sustain our trust.

  198. But there's another reality

  199. I want you to see.

  200. In man we trust,

  201. this motto of a people

  202. who trusts in man,

  203. in man we trust,

  204. it goes by another name.

  205. What trusting in man really is

  206. is a turning of one's heart

  207. from the living God.

  208. Would you look at

  209. chapter 17, verse 5.

  210. Cursed is the man

  211. who trusts in man

  212. and makes flesh his strength,

  213. whose heart turns away

  214. from the Lord.

  215. Whose heart turns away

  216. from the Lord.

  217. Now just a little

  218. historical background.

  219. Jeremiah was written

  220. by the prophet Jeremiah.

  221. And it was written

  222. to the people of God

  223. who were persistently

  224. disobeying God's Word.

  225. They kept on arching.

  226. They kept on resisting God.

  227. And so at this point

  228. in Judah's history,

  229. Babylon was on the scene.

  230. And so in Jeremiah 39,

  231. there is an account

  232. of the fall of Jerusalem.

  233. And what we have leading up to it

  234. is all that preceded that.

  235. Jeremiah.

  236. God using to warn His people

  237. again and again,

  238. don't go that way.

  239. Come back to Me.

  240. Turn back for Me.

  241. He has some really strong language

  242. to talk about His people.

  243. He calls them a whore.

  244. Come back to Me though.

  245. One of the areas

  246. where God warns His people

  247. at that time was

  248. Judah sees Babylon coming

  249. and what do they do?

  250. Where do they turn?

  251. They turn to Egypt.

  252. They turn to Assyria.

  253. They look for help

  254. from man.

  255. And God says,

  256. no, don't go there.

  257. Turn to Me.

  258. You see,

  259. in man we trust,

  260. goes by another name.

  261. I want to tell you something

  262. about your heart.

  263. Biblically speaking.

  264. Your heart.

  265. It's your heart

  266. that

  267. kind of assesses things.

  268. It determines something's worth.

  269. It's value.

  270. And from your heart as well

  271. comes your willful choice

  272. to live for it.

  273. And so you determine

  274. what is of value,

  275. ultimate value,

  276. and your heart also says,

  277. I'm living for it.

  278. That all takes place

  279. in your heart.

  280. That's why

  281. there's such a huge emphasis

  282. in the Bible

  283. on your heart.

  284. your heart

  285. is where you worship from.

  286. And just to heighten this

  287. a little bit more,

  288. if you flip a couple pages

  289. to the left in your Bibles

  290. to Jeremiah 2,

  291. to get at the situation

  292. a little bit more,

  293. Jeremiah 2.13,

  294. God warns His people.

  295. And He uses, again,

  296. vivid imagery.

  297. He says,

  298. for My people have committed

  299. two evils.

  300. They have forsaken Me.

  301. They have turned their back

  302. on Me.

  303. And then He calls Himself

  304. the fountain of living waters.

  305. They have forsaken Me,

  306. the fountain of living waters,

  307. and hewed out cisterns

  308. for themselves,

  309. broken cisterns

  310. that can hold no water.

  311. And what we see Jeremiah

  312. talking about is

  313. His people

  314. turning away from Him

  315. the fountain of living waters,

  316. the One who gives life.

  317. The One who sustains.

  318. The One who strengthens.

  319. The One who is for them.

  320. They turn from Him

  321. and they turn to

  322. things of their own making.

  323. Cisterns.

  324. Designed to hold water,

  325. but these are broken.

  326. They don't deliver.

  327. They don't give them

  328. what they want.

  329. They built them themselves.

  330. Do you know what it's a picture of?

  331. It's a picture of idolatry.

  332. This trusting in man,

  333. in man we trust,

  334. the other name for it,

  335. is idolatry.

  336. That's what it is.

  337. It's the creating of something else

  338. to worship

  339. in the place of God.

  340. Ultimately,

  341. what is being gotten at here

  342. is that idolatry

  343. is relying on something else

  344. ultimately.

  345. You're going to that

  346. because you want strength from it.

  347. You want hope from it.

  348. And it's not God.

  349. In man we trust,

  350. it's built on lies.

  351. In man we trust,

  352. goes by another name,

  353. idolatry.

  354. And in man we trust,

  355. is cursed.

  356. Cursed is the man

  357. who trusts in man.

  358. God's response

  359. to persistent disobedience

  360. from His Word

  361. to His Word

  362. is what cursing is.

  363. It's the negative consequences

  364. for persistent disobedience.

  365. That word curse is lifted.

  366. It's calling us back

  367. to Deuteronomy 28

  368. where God has saved a people

  369. and He says,

  370. if you want to move forward,

  371. you're going to have two choices.

  372. Either obey My Word

  373. and be blessed.

  374. Experience My blessing.

  375. Or disobey My Word

  376. and experience curse.

  377. The negative outworkings

  378. of your sinful choices.

  379. But I just want to let you know,

  380. our God is a wonderful God

  381. and He is patient.

  382. And so in a passage like Exodus 34,

  383. 6, and 7 where He reveals Himself,

  384. He says that He is slow to anger.

  385. Slow to anger.

  386. He is patient with His people.

  387. Patiently calling them back.

  388. And Jeremiah repeatedly calls

  389. His people back to God.

  390. But God's patience

  391. eventually came to an end.

  392. He eventually handed them over

  393. to what they wanted.

  394. Romans 1.

  395. He allowed for their consequences

  396. to come upon them.

  397. They tasted

  398. and experienced

  399. the outcome of their sinful choices

  400. and their disobedience

  401. to God's Word.

  402. And that's a bad place to be.

  403. In Jeremiah 17,

    Jeremiah 17:6

  404. verse 6,

  405. we have a very vivid picture

  406. of that place.

  407. Let me read it for you.

  408. He is like a shrub.

  409. Those cursed.

  410. He is like a shrub in the desert

  411. and shall not see any good come.

  412. He shall dwell in the parched places

  413. of the wilderness

  414. in uninhabited salt land.

  415. It's a picture of desolation.

  416. It's a picture of barrenness.

  417. That word shrub

  418. can also be translated naked,

  419. believe it or not.

  420. Barren.

  421. Exposed.

  422. We see here that

  423. there is a hopelessness

  424. to those who

  425. persist in their disobedience

  426. to God.

  427. Shall not see any good come.

  428. It's a lonely place

  429. in uninhabited salt land.

  430. It's a parched place.

  431. No water.

  432. Doesn't see the good come.

  433. And when the heat of life arises,

  434. there's no place to run to.

  435. No place to hide.

  436. It's a really hard place.

  437. No shelter from the heat.

  438. We've all tasted

  439. of the curse.

  440. We've all tasted this.

  441. Maybe you've binged on pornography.

  442. You know that place afterwards?

  443. It's a parched place.

  444. It's a lonely place.

  445. It's an empty place.

  446. Desolate.

  447. Maybe you've binged

  448. things get hot in your life

  449. and you go shopping.

  450. And afterwards,

  451. you're like,

  452. what?

  453. This is empty.

  454. Parched place.

  455. This doesn't satisfy me.

  456. This is a broken cistern.

  457. Maybe a web of lies.

  458. It's a bad place.

  459. Hard place to be.

  460. We all know this place.

  461. I know this place.

  462. This is a hard place.

  463. When you trust in man,

  464. you turn your heart from the Lord

  465. and you experience the consequences

  466. for disobeying His voice.

  467. It's a hard place to be.

  468. And man,

  469. we trust is a cursed place.

  470. Would you look at

  471. chapter 17 again,

  472. verse 13?

  473. O Lord,

  474. the hope of Israel,

  475. all who forsake You

  476. shall be put to shame.

  477. Those who turn away from You

  478. shall be written in the earth,

  479. reference to death,

  480. for they have forsaken the Lord,

  481. the fountain of living water.

  482. There it comes again.

  483. The fountain of living water.

  484. Not only have we seen it

  485. in chapter 2,

  486. now we see it showing up

  487. in the very passage

  488. that we're looking at.

  489. God is the fountain

  490. of living water.

  491. And so,

  492. in man we trust,

  493. we experience curse.

  494. We miss the waters.

  495. And so,

  496. the last reality

  497. I want to show you

  498. is this.

  499. It's a call to those

  500. who are trusting in man.

  501. It's a call

  502. to the fountain of living water.

  503. It's a call to turn away

  504. from trusting in man.

  505. From self-reliance.

  506. How do we respond?

  507. If you find yourself

  508. in the parched place,

  509. how do you respond?

  510. You turn from it.

  511. You turn from it

  512. and you turn to your God.

  513. You turn to the fountain

  514. of living water.

  515. Turn from trusting in man

  516. and turn to God.

  517. Come out of the cursed,

  518. parched place.

  519. Come out of there.

  520. Stop trusting in man.

  521. Stop trusting in yourself.

  522. And come to the oasis.

  523. The blessing

  524. of trusting in the Lord.

  525. Of drinking deep

  526. from the fountain

  527. of living water.

  528. Can I tell you something awesome?

  529. Flip over in your Bibles

  530. to Galatians 3.

  531. Galatians 3.

  532. Galatians 3.

  533. Chapter 3.

  534. Verse 13.

  535. Christ Jesus, Christ,

  536. redeemed us

  537. from the curse of the law

  538. by becoming a curse for us.

  539. For it is written,

  540. cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree

  541. so that in Christ Jesus,

  542. the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles.

  543. That's us.

  544. Are you in the parched place?

  545. Jesus took on your curse on Himself

  546. so that you could experience God's blessing.

  547. Who do you ultimately trust in?

  548. Whose voice do you ultimately believe?

  549. Who's defining you?

  550. We're being shown here,

  551. don't trust in man.

  552. Turn to God.

  553. And now let's turn to verses 7 and 8 of Jeremiah 17.

  554. Let's turn to the fountain of living water.

  555. Let's turn to the One

  556. who is the source of our strength,

  557. our hope,

  558. and even in the midst of heat and drought.

  559. We are not to trust in man.

  560. The cry of our hearts

  561. is the Lord is our trust.

  562. Four realities.

  563. The Lord is our trust.

  564. Verses 7 and 8.

  565. The Lord is our trust.

  566. Is our model.

  567. It's what we proclaim.

  568. It is the banner over us.

  569. And I just want to show you

  570. that this motto is built on a foundation of truth.

  571. Not lies.

  572. God is the Creator of all.

  573. All things depend on Him.

  574. We depend on Him.

  575. He does not depend on us.

  576. He is unlimited in terms of place and time.

  577. He's omnipresent.

  578. He is unlimited in His knowledge.

  579. He knows all things all the time

  580. and He doesn't sweat it.

  581. He's unlimited in His power.

  582. There's nothing that God cannot do,

  583. so He wills.

  584. He is holy.

  585. He doesn't have a deep root of sin.

  586. He's holy.

  587. He's perfect in all that He is.

  588. He's gloriously good

  589. and right and true.

  590. And that shows up in His justice.

  591. His justice is always pure.

  592. That shows up in His love.

  593. He always loves purely.

  594. God is great.

  595. Now, if you were wondering

  596. who to choose at any given moment

  597. to trust in, man or God,

  598. if you do the math,

  599. it's pretty obvious.

  600. God is worthy of your trust.

  601. But there's a step of humility, isn't there?

  602. There's a step of coming under God's authority.

  603. And that's where our pride can trip up.

  604. I just want to help you to see.

  605. If you do the math,

  606. God is worthy of your trust.

  607. He is able to bear your ultimate reliance.

  608. He's big enough.

  609. Nothing or no one else is.

  610. He is able to carry you.

  611. The Lord is our trust

  612. is a motto established on the truth

  613. of who God is

  614. and what He's done in history.

  615. The second reality I want you to see is this.

  616. The Lord is our trust

  617. goes by another name.

  618. If you look at v. 7,

  619. you see,

  620. blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord

  621. whose trust is the Lord.

  622. There's a little emphasis there.

  623. He goes from

  624. blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord

  625. to whose trust is the Lord.

  626. So maybe think about it this way.

  627. What we're called to here

  628. is not to trust in your trust.

  629. To not have more faith in your faith.

  630. It's not about how much faith you have.

  631. It's about who you are trusting in.

  632. And what we're seeing here,

  633. it's the Lord is our trust.

  634. He is our confidence.

  635. On Him we rely.

  636. Remember, trust is reliance on God

  637. as an ultimate reliance.

  638. He defines who we are.

  639. He determines how we are to walk.

  640. He lets us know

  641. what our greatest danger is.

  642. He let us know.

  643. He shows us

  644. where deliverance is to be found.

  645. Jesus.

  646. And He ultimately

  647. determines our destinies.

  648. The Lord is our trust

  649. goes by another name.

  650. Did you know that your heart

  651. is designed for something?

  652. God designed it for something.

  653. It's designed to recognize

  654. something of worth.

  655. It's designed to give

  656. kind of

  657. credence to it

  658. and follow it.

  659. To live for it.

  660. God designed your heart.

  661. He designed your heart

  662. for Himself.

  663. He designed your heart

  664. to recognize

  665. His glory

  666. and

  667. live for it.

  668. That's what your heart

  669. was designed for.

  670. These words,

  671. the Lord is our trust.

  672. trust.

  673. This goes by another name.

  674. And it's not idolatry.

  675. It's worship.

  676. True worship.

  677. Trusting in the Lord

  678. is an act of worship.

  679. Recognizing His worth

  680. and then

  681. living for it

  682. with all that you are.

  683. Calling back

  684. from Jeremiah 2.13.

  685. The Lord is our trust.

  686. The Lord is our trust.

  687. It's kind of putting away

  688. the cisterns

  689. that we make.

  690. It's putting away

  691. of the places

  692. we go to

  693. to find strength

  694. that's not God.

  695. It's putting away

  696. of idolatry.

  697. It's putting away

  698. of things that we look to

  699. for deliverance.

  700. And it is

  701. drinking deep

  702. from the fountain

  703. of living water.

  704. it's depending

  705. on God

  706. as our source

  707. of strength.

  708. Augustine

  709. said it this way.

  710. Our hearts

  711. are restless

  712. until they find

  713. their rest

  714. in you.

  715. Until they find

  716. their ultimate

  717. reliance

  718. in you.

  719. ultimate

  720. worship

  721. in you.

  722. Ultimate

  723. trust

  724. in you.

  725. The Lord

  726. is our trust.

  727. Goes by another name.

  728. Worship.

  729. The fourth reality

  730. I want you to see

  731. under this banner

  732. the Lord is our trust

  733. is the blessing.

  734. How God responds.

  735. When we trust

  736. God's Word.

  737. This is back to

  738. Deuteronomy 28.

  739. Blessing and curse.

  740. When we trust

  741. God's Word.

  742. When we rely

  743. on what He says

  744. blessing follows.

  745. The positive consequences

  746. to relying on

  747. God and His Word.

  748. We see the picture

  749. of it in verse 8.

  750. He's like a tree

  751. planted by water

  752. that sends out

  753. its roots

  754. by the streams.

  755. It does not fear

  756. when heat comes

  757. for its leaves

  758. remain green.

  759. It's not anxious

  760. in the year of drought

  761. for it does not cease

  762. to bear fruit.

  763. It's a picture

  764. of life.

  765. It's a picture

  766. of vitality.

  767. It's a picture

  768. of a tree

  769. planted by streams

  770. of water.

  771. That should ring

  772. a bell.

  773. Psalm 1.

  774. It's a picture

  775. of vitality.

  776. This tree

  777. sends out its roots

  778. by the streams

  779. of water.

  780. It's a very

  781. vivid picture.

  782. Water gives life.

  783. Water sustains.

  784. We all need water.

  785. water.

  786. It's in sharp contrast

  787. to the shrub

  788. in the desolate

  789. parched places,

  790. isn't it?

  791. Quite a contrast.

  792. Contrast in pictures.

  793. What makes

  794. verse 8

  795. so wonderful?

  796. This blessing,

  797. this vitality

  798. of living

  799. is the water.

  800. water.

  801. And

  802. Jeremiah

  803. seems to have

  804. water on his mind

  805. because

  806. he references

  807. water in 8

  808. and then in verse 13

  809. again,

  810. I pointed this earlier,

  811. for they have forsaken

  812. the Lord,

  813. the fountain

  814. of living water.

  815. What's the water?

  816. The water is our God.

  817. He's the fountain

  818. of living water.

  819. It's a picture

  820. of a thriving

  821. oasis.

  822. in the midst

  823. of stifling

  824. Middle Eastern

  825. heat

  826. and drought.

  827. With God

  828. as our trust,

  829. we thrive

  830. even when

  831. the heat comes.

  832. Did you notice

  833. the references

  834. to fear

  835. and anxiety?

  836. To heat

  837. and drought?

  838. Those can make you

  839. a little fearful.

  840. A little anxious.

  841. But with God

  842. as our trust,

  843. our leaves

  844. remain green.

  845. We bear fruit

  846. even when the heat

  847. comes,

  848. even when there's

  849. drought.

  850. God

  851. is our

  852. fountain

  853. of living water.

  854. We experience

  855. heat regularly.

  856. We experience

  857. drought,

  858. and when we see

  859. it coming,

  860. we can be afraid.

  861. We can be anxious.

  862. ISIS is in the news.

  863. And so,

  864. I'm guessing

  865. many of you

  866. are thinking,

  867. okay,

  868. where are they

  869. going to hit next?

  870. What's going to happen?

  871. Who's going to die?

  872. How many people?

  873. It can start

  874. making you anxious.

  875. It can make you fearful.

  876. Syrian refugees

  877. coming to Wisconsin.

  878. How do you

  879. respond to that?

  880. It can raise

  881. questions of fear

  882. and anxiety

  883. because you start

  884. wondering who's

  885. coming in with them.

  886. As Christians,

  887. we're to respond

  888. compassionately

  889. and wisely.

  890. Financial strain.

  891. Unemployment.

  892. Conflict with loved ones.

  893. Huge decisions.

  894. What is the next step

  895. we're going to make?

  896. Difficult work environments.

  897. When you look at yourself

  898. in the mirror

  899. and you start fearing

  900. what other people

  901. are going to think about you.

  902. It's all different

  903. kinds of heat,

  904. isn't it?

  905. We've been going

  906. through some heat

  907. as a church.

  908. And it can expose

  909. who we trust.

  910. I know it does with me.

  911. The Lord is our trust.

  912. He is our ultimate reliance.

  913. When we experience

  914. this kind of heat,

  915. we're tempted

  916. to go to places

  917. trusting in ourselves,

  918. trusting in man.

  919. We go to the Lord

  920. who is our trust.

  921. Trust.

  922. The Lord is our trust.

  923. There is where blessing is.

  924. There is where life is.

  925. When God turns up the heat,

  926. we send our roots

  927. to the streams

  928. of living waters.

  929. The Lord is our trust.

  930. The fourth reality

  931. I want you to see

  932. under this

  933. is that word water.

  934. Water.

  935. Planted by streams of water.

  936. It sends its roots

  937. out by the streams.

  938. I've already made

  939. the connection

  940. with verse 13

  941. of chapter 17

  942. that God is the

  943. fountain of living water.

  944. He is the one

  945. who gives life.

  946. Did you know

  947. later in Jeremiah,

  948. Jeremiah 31,

  949. Jeremiah speaks

  950. of a future

  951. when God will make

  952. a new covenant

  953. with a new people

  954. and He'll write

  955. His word

  956. on their hearts.

  957. We learn from

  958. Ezekiel 36

  959. that that new covenant,

  960. the Holy Spirit

  961. will come upon

  962. God's people

  963. in a new

  964. and pronounced way.

  965. A new covenant

  966. with a new people

  967. with new hearts.

  968. And what we learn

  969. from our New Testaments

  970. is that

  971. it's Jesus

  972. that inaugurated

  973. the new covenant.

  974. His life,

  975. death,

  976. and resurrection.

  977. It was by His blood

  978. that He shed

  979. that we are now

  980. living in the new covenant.

  981. And so now

  982. on this side of the cross,

  983. we're reading back

  984. through Jesus

  985. Jeremiah 17.

  986. We're reading back

  987. through the establishing

  988. of the new covenant

  989. in Jesus.

  990. A better covenant

  991. built on better promises.

  992. We're looking at it

  993. through Jeremiah 17.

  994. We're looking at it

  995. through the cross.

  996. Through Jesus.

  997. And so when we read

  998. a passage like

  999. John 4,

  1000. where Jesus meets

1001. a woman at the well,

  1002. He says this

  1003. and it takes on

  1004. new significance

1005. in light of Jeremiah 17.

  1006. this is John 4,

    John 4:10

  1007. verse 10.

  1008. The Samaritan woman

  1009. just asked Jesus,

1010. hey, can I get you

  1011. a drink of water?

  1012. Jesus answered her,

  1013. or actually,

1014. He asked her for it.

1015. If you know the gift

1016. of God and who it is

1017. that is saying to you,

  1018. give me a drink,

1019. you would have asked Him

1020. and He would have given you

  1021. living water.

  1022. Later on, He says,

  1023. everyone who drinks

  1024. of this water

  1025. will be thirsty

  1026. again from that well.

  1027. But whoever drinks

  1028. of the water

1029. that I will give him

1030. will never be thirsty again.

1031. The water that I will give him

  1032. will become in him

  1033. a spring of water

  1034. welling up

  1035. to eternal life.

  1036. John 7 says

  1037. that water

  1038. is the Holy Spirit

  1039. living inside of us.

  1040. New covenant reality.

1041. When we put our faith

  1042. in Jesus,

  1043. we are indwelled

  1044. by the Holy Spirit.

  1045. He dwells in us.

  1046. He fills us.

  1047. He empowers us.

  1048. He enlivens us.

  1049. We're like a tree

  1050. planted by a stream.

1051. We don't fear the heat.

1052. We're not anxious in drought

  1053. because the Lord Jesus

  1054. is our trust.

  1055. He is the fountain

  1056. of living water.

  1057. To Him we turn.

  1058. So when we read,

  1059. blessed is the man

1060. who trusts in the Lord,

1061. whose trust is the Lord,

  1062. we read that

  1063. back through

  1064. where we are.

  1065. We read that

1066. through the cross of Jesus.

1067. And so we can say,

  1068. blessed is the man

1069. who trusts in the Lord Jesus,

  1070. whose trust is

  1071. the Lord Jesus.

  1072. the Lord

  1073. is our trust.

  1074. The Lord Jesus

  1075. is our trust.

1076. We've looked at two ways

  1077. to live here.

  1078. Man

  1079. is our trust

  1080. and the Lord

  1081. is our trust.

  1082. I just want to

  1083. do a quick

  1084. three things of application

  1085. and then close.

  1086. the first thing

  1087. in light of what

  1088. we've been talking about

  1089. is this.

  1090. The Christian life

  1091. is a continual turning

  1092. from yourself

  1093. and turning to Jesus,

1094. the fountain of living water.

  1095. There is the

  1096. first initial

  1097. repentance and faith

  1098. where we're converted.

  1099. But the Christian life

  1100. is a continual turning,

  1101. turning from broken cisterns

  1102. and a turning to

1103. the fountain of living water.

  1104. water.

  1105. Ongoing renouncing

  1106. of false gods.

  1107. Ongoing relying

  1108. on Jesus.

  1109. The true fountain

  1110. of living water.

  1111. So,

  1112. we come out.

  1113. We regularly come out

  1114. of parched places.

  1115. And we regularly go

  1116. to the fountain

  1117. of living water.

1118. It's par for the course.

1119. That's the life we live.

  1120. Second,

  1121. God uses heat

  1122. to expose

  1123. who we trust.

1124. What are you afraid of?

1125. What are you anxious over?

  1126. God is using heat

  1127. to expose

  1128. who you trust in.

1129. He's been doing that with me.

  1130. So,

  1131. what do you do

1132. when the heat comes on?

  1133. You turn to Jesus.

  1134. You trust in Him.

  1135. He's over it.

  1136. He's in it.

  1137. He's through it.

  1138. Let Him lead on.

  1139. So,

  1140. we come out

  1141. of the parched places

  1142. and go to Jesus

  1143. to drink

  1144. of the fountain

  1145. of living water.

  1146. The final thing

1147. I want you to see

  1148. is,

1149. in light of the culture

  1150. we live in,

  1151. the Christian life

  1152. is

  1153. counter-cultural.

  1154. The motto

  1155. we live by

  1156. is a sharp contrast

1157. to that of the American culture.

  1158. We live by

  1159. our Lord's voice,

  1160. by His strength,

  1161. not our culture's voice.

  1162. And so,

  1163. there will be

  1164. a standing out

  1165. when we come out

  1166. of the parched places

  1167. and when we drink

  1168. from the fountain

  1169. of living water,

  1170. we'll stand out

  1171. in this culture.

  1172. So,

  1173. in close,

  1174. whose voice

  1175. are you living by?

  1176. Who are you

  1177. ultimately relying in?

  1178. Jeremiah 17,

  1179. 5-8

  1180. points to two ways

  1181. to live.

  1182. In man we trust

  1183. or the Lord Jesus

  1184. is our trust.

  1185. He became a curse

  1186. for us

  1187. so that we can

  1188. experience His blessing

  1189. ongoingly.

  1190. The difference

  1191. is who you

  1192. ultimately rely on.

  1193. Let me pray.

  1194. Lord Jesus,

  1195. Lord Jesus,

  1196. You are our trust,

  1197. You are our confidence,

  1198. You are our fountain

  1199. of living water.

  1200. God,

  1201. You are our hope

  1202. in the midst

  1203. of hardship

  1204. and heat

  1205. and God,

  1206. we look to You.

  1207. And You,

  1208. Jesus,

  1209. we follow You.

  1210. We look to You

  1211. and trust You.

  1212. In Jesus' name,

  1213. Amen.
