  1. Matthew 1, verses 18-25.

    Matthew 1:18–25

  2. I'm going to be walking through the passage in the sermon,

  3. and so I'm going to hold off on reading it.

  4. We'll go through it together as I preach through it.

  5. But you can see the title on the back of your bulletin.

  6. The title is The Birth of Our King.

  7. And the more I've thought about it,

  8. the title probably would be more accurate if it was The Naming of Our King.

  9. And so what we see in Matthew 1, verses 18-25,

    Matthew 1:18–25

  10. it culminates in the naming of this little baby, born of a virgin,

  11. naming Him Jesus.

  12. Now, as soon as you hear the word birth, though,

  13. you might go kind of in a genetic direction.

  14. We have great genetic variety among us.

  15. I mean, just look at each other's earlobes.

  16. Can you roll your R?

  17. Can you do the little squishy thing with your tongue?

  18. You know, the clove thing?

  19. Some of us can, some of us can't.

  20. Skin, color, ethnicity, there is great genetic variation among us, is there not?

  21. There is. It's glorious.

  22. God wants to call to Himself

  23. from every tribe and nation and ethnicity of people for Himself.

  24. Well, let me ask you this.

  25. What was the genetic code of Jesus?

  26. What were His genes?

  27. Well, according to Matthew 1,

  28. actually 16,

  29. we know whose genes He didn't have.

  30. He had none of Joseph's genes.

  31. Look at 1.16, would you?

  32. And Jacob, the father of Joseph,

  33. the husband of Mary,

  34. Matthew's very clear in saying

  35. He was not the genetic father of this Jesus.

  36. If Joseph,

  37. if His genes

  38. weren't in Jesus,

  39. and it was through Joseph

  40. that would come

  41. the great title of a son of David,

  42. how is it that Jesus

  43. can claim that title?

  44. If He has no genetics to David,

  45. at least on Joseph's side,

  46. some will make an argument

  47. that He did from Mary's side,

  48. but that's not Matthew's point.

  49. How can we be confident

  50. that Jesus is actually a son of David

  51. and therefore claim a right to the throne?

  52. That's what Matthew is getting at

  53. in this passage.

  54. If Jesus didn't have any Joseph's genes,

  55. He didn't have any David's genes.

  56. Think about it as gene number 14,

  57. the number of David.

  58. How can He be a descendant of David?

  59. So in 1.16,

  60. we're kind of left with that question.

  61. Okay, how does that work?

  62. If Jesus isn't physically related to Joseph,

  63. how can He be a son of David?

  64. And that's what Matthew answers here

  65. in this wonderful passage.

  66. We're going to see how that works out.

  67. Who is this baby?

  68. Who is this baby born of a virgin?

  69. And how is He related to Joseph?

  70. And how can He make a claim

  71. to be David's greater son?

  72. Well, this morning what I want to do

  73. is walk through the passage,

  74. give you some color on it,

  75. help you see some things,

  76. and then we're going to land

  77. by making a point,

  78. and then we're going to apply it

  79. in four ways.

  80. Four B's.

  81. B-E.

  82. Four B's.

  83. We'll get there in a little bit.

  84. But first,

  85. let's just jump right in.

  86. The birth of Jesus Christ.

  87. Verse 18.

  88. Now, the birth of Jesus Christ

  89. took place this way.

  90. And so what Matthew is doing

  91. is going,

  92. okay, here's how it worked out.

  93. Now, if you are a fan

  94. of Luke's gospel,

  95. you may be a little disappointed.

  96. Because Matthew doesn't get

  97. into the details.

  98. He doesn't talk to us

  99. about shepherds.

  100. He doesn't talk to us

  101. about mangers.

  102. He doesn't talk to us

  103. about swaddling clothes.

  104. He doesn't go that direction.

  105. That's Luke,

  106. the good doctor

  107. who loves details.

  108. No.

  109. Matthew's going after

  110. something else.

  111. And we learn very quickly

  112. that this birth of Jesus Christ

  113. was surrounded by controversy.

  114. The thing about us

  115. and who are very familiar

  116. with this story

  117. is we can be too familiar to it.

  118. There's something going on here

  119. that is very controversial.

  120. And we see it showing up

  121. in that start of the second sentence

  122. in verse 18.

  123. When his mother Mary

  124. had been betrothed to Joseph,

  125. before they came together,

  126. she was found to be with child

  127. from the Holy Spirit.

  128. Controversy!

  129. Let me give you a little

  130. kind of background.

  131. When we think about engagement

  132. here in our culture,

  133. we think about it a certain way.

  134. You don't have to go to

  135. get an attorney

  136. and go down to a judge

  137. in order to get engaged.

  138. It doesn't work that way.

  139. It's rather informal.

  140. And so if you get engaged

  141. to someone,

  142. you can break the engagement

  143. without having to go

  144. any kind of legal

  145. kind of direction.

  146. Not so in the first century.

  147. Not so for the Jew.

  148. What would happen?

  149. Betrothal was actually

  150. a legal event.

  151. And so getting married

  152. involved getting betrothed,

  153. which was the committing

  154. of one man to one woman.

  155. And after they were betrothed,

  156. they could talk about each other

  157. as husband and wife,

  158. believe it or not.

  159. But they didn't come together

  160. until another year later.

  161. And that's why we see here

  162. in verse 18

  163. when his mother Mary

  164. had been betrothed to Joseph

  165. before they came together,

  166. before they consummated

  167. their marriage,

  168. which would take a year

  169. after the betrothal.

  170. And so that whole year,

  171. the daughter, the wife,

  172. would be living with her father

  173. in her father's house.

  174. And so it's very different

  175. from our situation today,

  176. isn't it?

  177. And so we've got to remember

  178. there's something else

  179. kind of going on here.

  180. And so what's shaken out

  181. is this.

  182. Mary was found to be pregnant

  183. after they were betrothed

  184. and before they came together.

  185. Do you get what's going on?

  186. Very controversial.

  187. So here's this legally binding situation.

  188. And by the way,

  189. if you read Deuteronomy 22,

  190. 13 through 24,

  191. there are some real consequences

  192. for one who's betrothed

  193. and is shown to be unfaithful.

  194. Really serious.

  195. And so in verse 18,

  196. the controversy starts to swirl.

  197. She was found to be with a child, Mary.

  198. And we're not told

  199. how this conception takes place,

  200. only it's by the Holy Spirit.

  201. That's very significant.

  202. The third person of the Trinity

  203. has already shown up.

  204. One other thing to note

  205. before we move on.

  206. Joseph must not have known

  207. about the angel Gabriel

  208. going to Mary.

  209. I don't know how it works out.

  210. I don't know why he didn't know.

  211. But it's clear that Joseph

  212. is finding out about this

  213. after she is showing,

  214. after she is obviously pregnant.

  215. And so there's a kind of like

  216. news to Joseph going on here.

  217. And so if you look at now,

  218. verse 19,

  219. we've seen the controversy.

  220. Now it moves to a quiet divorce.

  221. Look at verse 19.

  222. And her husband Joseph,

  223. being a just man

  224. and unwilling to put her to shame,

  225. resolved to divorce her quietly.

  226. Again, the divorce language

  227. is being used.

  228. It's kind of foreign to our ears

  229. when we talk about engagement.

  230. But back in the day,

  231. it was the legal way

  232. of undoing a betrothal.

  233. And so it had legal force to it.

  234. And so that's the divorce language

  235. going on here.

  236. But what you need to see

  237. is that word just.

  238. And her husband Joseph,

  239. being a just man,

  240. a just man,

  241. we can move very quickly

  242. to thinking about

  243. how merciful Joseph was,

  244. how compassionate he was,

  245. how he dealt with

  246. this very controversial situation.

  247. We can move too quick.

  248. Do you know what

  249. that word just is getting at?

  250. Joseph was looking

  251. to be faithful to God's word.

  252. Joseph was looking

  253. to be faithful

  254. to Deuteronomy 22.

  255. Joseph was looking

  256. to walk according

  257. to God's word.

  258. And then deal mercifully

  259. and compassionately

  260. with the implications of that.

  261. Here his betrothed

  262. was shown to be pregnant.

  263. And so now he has

  264. biblical precedent

  265. in order to divorce her.

  266. He's just,

  267. he's seeking to do

  268. the right thing.

  269. And you know what?

  270. Don't you just kind of wish

  271. like there was a little bit

  272. more detail here?

  273. We're not told

  274. about Joseph's wrestling

  275. with this.

  276. Did he have sleepless nights?

  277. Was he feeling betrayed?

  278. How confused was he?

  279. Who did he talk to?

  280. How did he wrestle through it?

  281. We're not told any of that.

  282. How much did he lose?

  283. Did he lose any?

  284. How did he reach the decision?

  285. Well, we know at least

  286. he was wrestling

  287. with God's word.

  288. What we see here in Joseph

  289. is a man who is seeking

  290. to do the right thing

  291. the right way.

  292. And so when he eventually

  293. read there that he looked,

  294. he didn't want to shame her.

  295. And so he wanted

  296. to divorce her quietly.

  297. Here we have a man

  298. who's wanting to have

  299. a clear conscience

  300. in God's word

  301. and yet being compassionate.

  302. He's looking to do

  303. the right thing.

  304. And in that,

  305. we learn something

  306. about this man.

  307. He's committed

  308. to obeying God's word

  309. and yet he's also

  310. going to do it

  311. with a heart of compassion.

  312. Can you begin to see

  313. why God would choose

  314. this man

  315. to be the earthly father

  316. of Jesus?

  317. This is a godly man.

  318. So there's controversy.

  319. There's a quiet divorce.

  320. And then we start

  321. to see in verse 20

  322. an angelic caller.

  323. But as he considered

  324. these things

  325. is what the ESV reads.

  326. The NIV is probably

  327. more accurate.

  328. It says,

  329. but after he had

  330. considered these things,

  331. it's past tense,

  332. which means

  333. he had already decided.

  334. So in verse 20,

  335. but he already decided

  336. to divorce her.

  337. He had already

  338. made the decision.

  339. And so Joseph

  340. has already drawn

  341. the conclusion.

  342. Alright, okay, okay.

  343. This is wrong.

  344. I've got to take this step.

  345. And now it's just

  346. a matter of

  347. kind of arranging

  348. the details.

  349. And God does something.

  350. God intervenes.

  351. The decision's been made,

  352. but God steps in.

  353. God says,

  354. uh, nope!

  355. It's like God said,

  356. Joseph, you know,

  357. I really appreciate

  358. your commitment

  359. to obey my revealed word.

  360. I really appreciate it,

  361. but this situation

  362. with Mary

  363. is not what it looks like.

  364. So he sends Joseph

  365. an angel of the Lord.

  366. And again,

  367. we're not giving the name,

  368. of the angel.

  369. Again, detail left out.

  370. So it was Gabriel

  371. who talked to Mary

  372. and the folks in Luke,

  373. but we're not giving

  374. the name of the angel here.

  375. You're left to kind of speculate.

  376. But he sends this angel

  377. of the Lord

  378. to intervene,

  379. to change Joseph's mind.

  380. To move him

  381. from divorcing Mary

  382. and abandoning the baby

  383. to marrying Mary

  384. and taking the baby

  385. as his own.

  386. And notice that

  387. in verse 20,

  388. but as he considered

  389. these things,

  390. behold,

  391. an angel of the Lord

  392. appeared to him

  393. in a dream.

  394. This happened in a dream.

  395. Again,

  396. this might be

  397. a little,

  398. little new

  399. for several of us,

  400. but you know what?

  401. When it boils down to it,

  402. God can do

  403. what he wants to do.

  404. He can intervene

  405. the way he wants

  406. to intervene.

  407. He's God.

  408. He can do that.

  409. He's more than able.

  410. In fact,

  411. we're going to see

  412. God showing up

  413. to people in dreams

  414. later in Matthew.

  415. Next week,

  416. he warns the Magi

  417. in a dream

  418. not to go back

  419. to Herod.

  420. Pilate's wife

  421. in chapter 27,

  422. she has a dream

  423. about this righteous man,

  424. Jesus.

  425. I mean,

  426. I'm not sure

  427. if you're familiar

  428. with what's going on

  429. among the Middle East,

  430. but Jesus is showing up

  431. to people in dreams.

  432. Story after story

  433. of this person

  434. coming to Muslims

  435. in dreams.

  436. resulting in their

  437. conversion to Christ.

  438. God uses dreams.

  439. Of course,

  440. dreams must be

  441. carefully weighed

  442. in light of Scripture.

  443. Subjective experience

  444. is submitted

  445. to the objective reality

  446. of God's Word.

  447. And we're going to see

  448. Matthew do that for us

  449. in just a second.

  450. But let's look at this

  451. dream.

  452. Let's look at what

  453. this angel says.

  454. And again,

  455. we're not given details.

  456. I mean,

  457. if you were in the room

  458. with Joseph

  459. as he was sleeping,

  460. what would he be doing?

  461. Was he like in the

  462. in-between dream state?

  463. Kind of aware

  464. but not aware?

  465. Was he rolling over

  466. a lot?

  467. Was he mumbling?

  468. Was he just silent?

  469. We don't know.

  470. But what we do know

  471. is this.

  472. The angel,

  473. God,

  474. through the angel,

  475. addresses Joseph

  476. by name.

  477. Joseph,

  478. son of David.

  479. God knows this man

  480. as he knows your name.

  481. And he says,

  482. Joseph,

  483. son of David.

  484. That rings a bell

  485. in us,

  486. doesn't it?

  487. It shoots right back

  488. to the genealogy

  489. in chapter 1

  490. verses 1 through 17.

  491. Son of David

  492. from the line of David.

  493. The one carrying

  494. the number 14 gene.

  495. The number of David.

  496. You.

  497. Joseph,

  498. son of David.

  499. Do not fear

  500. to take Mary

  501. as your wife.

  502. God's saying,

  503. Joseph,

  504. you don't need

  505. to be fearful here,

  506. buddy.

  507. You're not disobeying

  508. my word.

  509. There's something else

  510. going on.

  511. Do not fear

  512. to take Mary

  513. as your wife.

  514. Do not fear

  515. to come together

  516. with her.

  517. And then he gives

  518. a reason.

  519. See that word

  520. for

  521. in 20?

  522. For that

  523. which is conceived

  524. in her

  525. is from the Holy Spirit.

  526. You're not disobeying

  527. my word,

  528. Joseph,

  529. because

  530. this is my son

  531. conceived in this woman

  532. by the Holy Spirit.

  533. It's amazing.

  534. There's a miracle

  535. going on here.

  536. Two times now,

  537. Matthew has emphasized

  538. that this child

  539. in Mary's womb

  540. is conceived

  541. by the Holy Spirit.

  542. This is not

  543. what it seems like,

  544. Joseph.

  545. Despite what it may

  546. look like,

  547. Joseph,

  548. this is actually

  549. me at work

  550. caring about

  551. my purposes.

  552. That's why

  553. the angel of the Lord

  554. is there.

  555. There's something,

  556. there's a bigger plan

  557. going on here,

  558. Joseph.

  559. She will bear a son.

  560. The child

  561. is actually a son.

  562. And then he says

  563. to Joseph,

  564. and this is in the

  565. force of a command,

  566. you shall name

  567. him Jesus.

  568. That's from

  569. the angel

  570. of the Lord

  571. who is sent

  572. by God.

  573. Do you know

  574. what that means?

  575. The naming

  576. of this boy

  577. originated

  578. in the mind

  579. of God.

  580. God wanted

  581. this boy

  582. named Jesus.

  583. God wanted

  584. Joseph

  585. to name

  586. this boy

  587. Jesus.

  588. And what

  589. you must see

  590. is that

  591. the very fact

  592. that Joseph

  593. is going to

  594. name this boy,

  595. do you know

  596. what that means?

  597. He's legally

  598. taking him

  599. as his own.

  600. He's saying

  601. you're going

  602. to be my son.

  603. And by him

  604. saying that,

  605. do you know

  606. what comes

  607. with that?

  608. All the legal

  609. rights and

  610. privileges

  611. of his house.

  612. It's going to be

  613. a son of David

  614. legally.

  615. He's going to be

  616. legally.

  617. We'll talk

  618. about what

  619. the name

  620. of Jesus

  621. means a little

  622. later on.

  623. Oh, but

  624. God wanted

  625. this baby

  626. boy

  627. named Jesus.

  628. This boy

  629. conceived

  630. by the Holy

  631. Spirit,

  632. this God

  633. with us.

  634. He wanted

  635. his name

  636. Jesus.

  637. Jesus.

  638. One more

  639. thing I want

  640. you to

  641. note.

  642. Behold,

  643. the angel

  644. of the Lord

  645. appeared to

  646. him in a

  647. dream.

  648. Joseph,

  649. son of David,

  650. do not

  651. fear to

  652. take Mary

  653. as your

  654. wife,

  655. for that

  656. which is

  657. conceived

  658. in her

  659. is from

  660. the Holy

  661. Spirit.

  662. Notice

  663. verse 21.

  664. She will

  665. bear a

  666. son,

  667. and she

  668. shall

  669. call

  670. his name

  671. Jesus,

  672. for he

  673. will save

  674. his people

  675. from their

  676. sins.

  677. He's talking

  678. about the

  679. Messiah,

  680. talking about

  681. this baby

  682. boy is going

  683. to be the

  684. Christ,

  685. is the

  686. Christ,

  687. but he

  688. gets at

  689. the nature

  690. of his

  691. reign,

  692. what this

  693. king is

  694. going to

  695. deliver from.

  696. And so a

  697. good Jew at

  698. this time would

  699. be thinking

  700. the Messiah

  701. is going

  702. to come

  703. and he's

  704. going to

  705. deliver us

  706. from the

  707. political

  708. oppression

  709. of Rome.

  710. And what

  711. the angel

  712. is saying

  713. here,

  714. no,

  715. this king

  716. is going

  717. to deliver

  718. sinners

  719. from the

  720. oppression

  721. of sin,

  722. the presence,

  723. power,

  724. and penalty

  725. of sin.

  726. This baby

  727. boy is going

  728. to be a

  729. deliverer king

  730. from that.

  731. Just to

  732. make you

  733. aware,

  734. Joseph,

  735. of what

  736. this baby

  737. boy is going

  738. to do.

  739. Oh,

  740. it's so

  741. glorious.

  742. So in

  743. verses 20

  744. and 21,

  745. God

  746. intervenes

  747. Joseph's

  748. plan.

  749. Isn't that

  750. so gracious

  751. of God?

  752. He's so

  753. sovereign.

  754. He does

  755. what he

  756. wants to

  757. do.

  758. He

  759. interrupts

  760. and says,

  761. no,

  762. you're not

  763. going to

  764. divorce Mary.

  765. You're not

  766. going to

  767. abandon

  768. this child.

  769. That's

  770. not my

  771. plan.

  772. And so

  773. through this

  774. angel of

  775. the Lord,

  776. he says,

  777. no,

  778. no,

  779. you're going

  780. to take

  781. this young

  782. lady as

  783. your wife.

  784. And not

  785. only that,

  786. you're going

  787. to name

  788. this baby

  789. that you

  790. didn't

  791. conceive,

  792. Joseph.

  793. You're going

  794. to name

  795. him Jesus

  796. and therefore

  797. give him

  798. all the

  799. rights and

  800. privileges

  801. of your

  802. house as

  803. your firstborn.

  804. God has

  805. a plan

  806. for Joseph.

  807. And this

  808. is the

  809. fulfillment

  810. of his

  811. glorious

  812. plan for

  813. the fullness

  814. of time

  815. to unite

  816. all things

  817. in Christ.

  818. Oh,

  819. it's so

  820. beautiful.

  821. As we

  822. move on

  823. in verses

  824. 22 and

  825. 23,

  826. we have

  827. Matthew

  828. now,

  829. the gospel

  830. writer,

  831. sharing some

  832. of his

  833. helpful thoughts

  834. with us.

  835. He gives

  836. a prophetic

  837. confirmation

  838. of what

  839. this angel

  840. just said.

  841. God.

  842. We see

  843. that in

  844. verse 22.

  845. All this

  846. took place

  847. to fulfill

  848. what the

  849. Lord had

  850. spoken by

  851. the prophet

  852. Isaiah.

  853. Behold,

  854. the virgin

  855. shall conceive

  856. and bear

  857. a son,

  858. and they

  859. shall call

  860. his name

  861. Emmanuel,

  862. which means

  863. God with

  864. us.

  865. That's

  866. Matthew

  867. helping us

  868. understand

  869. what just

  870. happened

  871. between this

  872. angel of the

  873. Lord and

  874. Joseph.

  875. What he's

  876. saying is

  877. there is

  878. something

  879. of tremendous

  880. magnitude

  881. going on

  882. here.

  883. This is

  884. of such

  885. significance

  886. it's going

  887. to blow

  888. your mind.

  889. Matthew

  890. wants us

  891. to see

  892. that what

  893. is happening

  894. with Mary,

  895. Joseph,

  896. and this

  897. baby is

  898. the fulfillment

  899. of God's

  900. forever plan

  901. to save

  902. a people

  903. for himself.

  904. This quote

  905. is from

  906. Isaiah 7,

    Isaiah 7:14

  907. verse 14.

  908. written 700

  909. years earlier.

  910. It speaks

  911. of a virgin

  912. and a virgin

  913. conceiving

  914. and a virgin

  915. conceiving a

  916. boy and

  917. he's going

  918. to be named

  919. a certain

  920. name.

  921. So what

  922. is Matthew

  923. doing?

  924. He's pointing

  925. us to the

  926. Bible to

  927. help explain

  928. this dream.

  929. He's helping

  930. us make sense,

  931. interpret what's

  932. going on

  933. here.

  934. He's linking

  935. up this

  936. dream

  937. with Isaiah

  938. 7, 14

  939. to say

  940. this is

  941. fulfillment

  942. of what God

  943. has said

  944. 700 years

  945. ago.

  946. This is all

  947. part of God's

  948. glorious plan.

  949. Let me help

  950. you see it.

  951. Isaiah 7, 14

  952. speaks of a

  953. virgin.

  954. Who's the

  955. virgin?

  956. Mary!

  957. Fulfillment!

  958. Isaiah 7, 14

  959. points to a

  960. virgin conceiving.

  961. Matthew's

  962. saying, yes,

  963. conceived by

  964. the Holy

  965. Spirit.

  966. Isaiah 7, 14

  967. says this

  968. virgin shall

  969. conceive and

  970. bear a son.

  971. Matthew is

  972. saying, yes!

  973. She's going

  974. to have a

  975. son, all

  976. right!

  977. God with

  978. us.

  979. And that's

  980. where these

  981. accounts differ

  982. a little bit.

  983. Because in the

  984. interaction between

  985. the angel of the

  986. Lord with

  987. Joseph, he's to

  988. name him

  989. Jesus.

  990. Do you know

  991. what Matthew's

  992. doing?

  993. He's creating a

  994. parallel and

  995. help us make a

  996. link.

  997. Jesus is

  998. Emmanuel.

  999. Jesus, the

  1000. incarnate God

  1001. is salvation,

  1002. is God

  1003. with us.

  1004. Now, what you

  1005. need to

  1006. understand, too,

  1007. is that this

  1008. Isaiah 7, 14,

  1009. it's actually a

  1010. double fulfillment.

  1011. It was fulfilled

  1012. in the immediate

  1013. context, way back

  1014. in the 8th

  1015. century, but

  1016. its final and

  1017. complete fulfillment

  1018. was found in

  1019. Jesus Christ.

  1020. What starts in

  1021. Isaiah 7

  1022. builds and

  1023. builds through

  1024. Isaiah 9

  1025. into Isaiah

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  1026. chapter 11.

  1027. Isaiah 9, 6,

  1028. and 7, do you

  1029. remember that

  1030. passage?

  1031. For unto us a

  1032. child is born.

  1033. Remember his

  1034. name?

  1035. He's a wonderful

  1036. counselor.

  1037. mighty God,

  1038. everlasting

  1039. father, speaking

  1040. of an everlasting

  1041. king, prince of

  1042. peace, the

  1043. government should

  1044. be on his

  1045. shoulders.

  1046. He's going to

  1047. establish the

  1048. throne of David

  1049. and his

  1050. kingdom forever.

  1051. Isaiah 11 points

  1052. to this shoot from

  1053. the stump of

  1054. Jesse.

  1055. Do you know

  1056. what Matthew's

  1057. doing?

  1058. through Isaiah 17,

  1059. he's like, do you

  1060. remember the wonder

  1061. child coming?

  1062. Do you remember?

  1063. This is him.

  1064. This baby in

  1065. Mary's womb is

  1066. that wonder child

  1067. of Isaiah.

  1068. This is the

  1069. Messiah.

  1070. The Christ.

  1071. Christ.

  1072. So by quoting

  1073. Isaiah 7, 14,

  1074. this prophetic

  1075. confirmation,

  1076. Matthew draws a

  1077. parallel and helps

  1078. us to realize what

  1079. he wants us to

  1080. realize.

  1081. Jesus is the

  1082. Emmanuel, the

  1083. Christ.

  1084. This baby named

  1085. Jesus is Christ

  1086. the King.

  1087. So in verses 24

  1088. and 25, we see

  1089. Joseph's quick

  1090. response.

  1091. Boy, is he quick

  1092. to obey.

  1093. When Joseph

  1094. woke from

  1095. sleep, he

  1096. did.

  1097. He did

  1098. as the

  1099. angel of the

  1100. Lord commanded

  1101. him.

  1102. His mind was

  1103. changed.

  1104. God had

  1105. intervened.

  1106. He gets up

  1107. right away and

  1108. obeys.

  1109. He does what the

  1110. angel of the

  1111. Lord commanded

  1112. him.

  1113. He obeys God.

  1114. He obeys God.

  1115. And what I want

1116. you to see is the

  1117. significance of the

  1118. last sentence in

  1119. verse 25.

  1120. This culminates in

  1121. that sentence.

  1122. And Joseph called

  1123. his name Jesus.

  1124. He's answering the

  1125. question of Matthew

  1126. 1.16.

  1127. How can this boy,

  1128. who's not genetically

  1129. related to Joseph,

1130. be a son of David

  1131. and therefore the

  1132. Christ?

  1133. How does that work

  1134. out?

  1135. Well, what Matthew

  1136. is saying is he

  1137. didn't need to be

  1138. genetically related.

  1139. By Joseph naming

  1140. him his son,

  1141. he was legally

  1142. an heir with all

  1143. the rights and

  1144. privileges thereof.

1145. He was an heir to

  1146. the house of David.

  1147. He took on the

  1148. number 14, the

  1149. number of David.

  1150. He's the Messiah.

  1151. humanly speaking,

  1152. Joseph's obedience

  1153. resulted in the

  1154. legalizing of Jesus

  1155. as an heir to

  1156. David's throne.

  1157. One day in heaven,

  1158. I'm going to

  1159. approach Joseph if I

  1160. can, and I'll say,

  1161. man, thank you so

  1162. much.

  1163. Thank you so much.

  1164. All right, so the

  1165. point of this passage.

  1166. At the beginning of

  1167. the passage, Joseph was

  1168. going to divorce his

  1169. wife.

  1170. God intervenes.

  1171. And God intervenes in

  1172. such a way that

  1173. Joseph, instead of

  1174. divorcing and

  1175. abandoning, marries and

  1176. takes to himself.

  1177. He names this baby

  1178. Jesus.

1179. And what it shows us is

  1180. that Jesus is a

  1181. descendant of David.

1182. He is the Christ, the

1183. King from the house of

  1184. promise.

  1185. In other words, he's

  1186. legit.

  1187. So let's ask this

  1188. question.

  1189. So what?

  1190. What difference does it

  1191. make?

1192. This naming of a boy

  1193. 2,000 years ago, what

  1194. difference does that make

  1195. for us today?

1196. Well, it changes the way

  1197. we celebrate Christmas.

  1198. So four B's, and I'll be

  1199. really brief.

  1200. Maybe amazing.

  1201. Nah.

  1202. Four B's.

  1203. First one is this.

1204. In light of this naming

  1205. of Christ and having

  1206. him, recognizing him as

1207. the son of David, be

  1208. amazed.

  1209. Be amazed.

  1210. The conception of this

1211. baby boy was a miracle.

  1212. It was a tri-supernatural

  1213. miracle.

1214. The whole cast of the

  1215. Trinity is there.

  1216. God the Father planned

  1217. it.

  1218. Isaiah 7, from long

  1219. ago.

  1220. God the Spirit conceived

  1221. this baby in Mary's

  1222. womb.

1223. And the one that was

  1224. conceived was Emmanuel,

1225. the second person of the

  1226. Trinity taking on human

  1227. flesh.

1228. The whole cast of the

  1229. Trinity is there.

  1230. Some may object, hey,

  1231. babies aren't born that

  1232. way.

  1233. They're not conceived that

  1234. way.

  1235. Yes!

  1236. That's the point.

  1237. This is a miracle.

  1238. A glorious, glorious

  1239. miracle.

  1240. So when we celebrate

  1241. Christmas, we're

  1242. celebrating a miracle

  1243. that God miraculously

1244. conceived a baby in this

  1245. virgin's womb.

  1246. It was Emmanuel.

  1247. So be amazed.

  1248. But the amazingness

  1249. doesn't stop there.

  1250. This baby boy,

  1251. conceived by the

  1252. Holy Spirit,

  1253. is God's son.

  1254. It's not explicitly

  1255. stated, but it is

  1256. definitely implied.

  1257. Twice, Matthew says,

  1258. conceived by the

  1259. Holy Spirit.

  1260. This baby is conceived

  1261. of God.

  1262. He is God.

  1263. God in the flesh.

  1264. The second person of

  1265. the Trinity, the

  1266. eternally existent second

  1267. person of the Trinity

  1268. took on human flesh.

  1269. Fully God, fully man,

  1270. in one person.

  1271. Two distinct natures,

  1272. one person.

  1273. That's stinking amazing.

  1274. Without ceasing to be

1275. God, he took on human

  1276. flesh without any sin.

  1277. Is that not amazing?

  1278. That's amazing.

  1279. So be amazed.

  1280. But also, be comforted.

  1281. Be comforted.

1282. As a result of the

  1283. conception of this baby

  1284. boy, miraculously.

  1285. Fully God, fully man.

1286. Do you know what that

  1287. means for us?

1288. Our God is able to

  1289. identify with us in

  1290. every way.

  1291. He understands what it's

1292. like to walk in this

  1293. tent.

1294. We have a God who

  1295. gets it.

1296. He gets what it's like

1297. to be human living in a

  1298. fallen world.

  1299. He gets it.

  1300. He knows firsthand.

  1301. Again, Hebrews says it

  1302. this way.

  1303. He's a sympathetic high

  1304. priest who can identify

  1305. with all of our

  1306. weaknesses.

  1307. He's a sympathetic king.

  1308. Sympathetic.

  1309. He knows.

1310. He became one of us.

1311. And he's promised to be

  1312. with us.

  1313. The Emmanuel.

  1314. God with us.

  1315. Matthew 18, 20.

1316. Jesus says, where two or

1317. three are gathered in my

  1318. name, there I'm among

  1319. them.

  1320. Matthew 28, 20 says, and

  1321. behold, I'm with you

1322. always, even to the end of

  1323. the age.

  1324. Do you know what's

  1325. interesting about the book

  1326. of Matthew?

  1327. It begins with Emmanuel,

1328. God with us, and ends

1329. with Emmanuel, God with us.

1330. I'm with you always, even

1331. to the end of the age.

  1332. He's with us.

  1333. It's a tremendous

  1334. discomfort.

  1335. He's with us now.

  1336. As a church.

  1337. Walking through what we've

  1338. been walking.

  1339. He's with us.

  1340. To comfort us.

  1341. He's still present.

  1342. He's still with us.

  1343. Be comforted.

  1344. Be saved.

1345. Be saved by King Jesus.

  1346. Be saved.

  1347. Remember the name Jesus?

1348. It means God is salvation.

  1349. salvation.

  1350. Jesus is our salvation.

1351. King Jesus came to save.

  1352. That's his mission.

  1353. That's why he came.

1354. He came to liberate those

  1355. oppressed by the power,

  1356. presence, and penalty of

  1357. sin.

  1358. That's why he came.

1359. He didn't come for political

  1360. liberation.

  1361. Not yet, at least.

  1362. Second coming.

1363. He came first time to

  1364. liberate people from the

  1365. oppression of sin.

1366. And his people, of course,

1367. for all who will, for all,

1368. for he will save his people

  1369. from their sins.

1370. His people, of course, are

1371. all those who by faith have

1372. bowed the knee to him.

  1373. And have experienced his

  1374. forgiveness and liberation

  1375. from sin.

1376. And been welcomed into his

  1377. kingdom.

1378. He did it by substituting

  1379. himself.

1380. Emmanuel, the king, took the

1381. place of sinners on the

  1382. cross.

  1383. Amazing.

1384. So that we can be liberated

  1385. from sin.

1386. Have you bowed your knee to

  1387. King Jesus?

  1388. Have you received this

  1389. forgiveness?

  1390. Have you received his

  1391. gracious liberation from the

  1392. power of sin?

  1393. If you haven't, today's the

  1394. day.

  1395. Bow your knee.

  1396. Cry out to him.

1397. King Jesus saved me from my

  1398. sin.

  1399. He will.

1400. And if you do, let someone

  1401. know.

  1402. Let someone know.

1403. Because you now are part of

1404. the kingdom of the redeemed.

  1405. Be amazed.

  1406. Be comforted.

  1407. Be saved.

1408. Be on the king's mission.

1409. King Jesus came to save

  1410. sinners.

  1411. It's in his name.

1412. In our church, Christ the

1413. King Church is made up of

  1414. the poor and powerless.

1415. Sinners who have been saved

  1416. by King Jesus.

1417. We bowed our knee to him.

1418. By his grace, he has saved

  1419. us.

1420. And now he's called us to his

  1421. mission.

1422. Go make disciples of the

  1423. nations.

1424. Go make disciples of King

  1425. Jesus.

1426. Go tell it on the mountain

1427. that Jesus Christ is born.

  1428. The king has come.

1429. Our mission as a church is to

1430. glorify God by making known the

  1431. life-transforming power of the

1432. gospel, the good news of King

  1433. Jesus.

1434. We call people to bow their knee,

  1435. to submit to him,

1436. and experience his gracious reign in

  1437. their lives.

  1438. Jesus.

1439. Let's be on mission together.

  1440. Let's do this together.

1441. By Joseph naming this baby boy

1442. Jesus, he legitimized that Jesus is

1443. the king from the house of David.

1444. Be amazed, be comforted, be saved.

1445. Let's be on mission together.

1446. Father, rejoice, your king has come.

  1447. Let's pray.

1448. Lord Jesus, our king, we bow our

  1449. knee.

1450. We are poor and powerless.

1451. We were lost and lonely, and you

  1452. came for us.

1453. And you're coming back, and we

  1454. rejoice.

  1455. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1456. Amen.

  1457. Amen.

  1458. Amen.

  1459. Amen.

  1460. Amen.

  1461. Amen.
