  1. it was the year 1977 I was a lad a wee little lad was I and my dad brought us

  2. to see Star Wars and my life was changed I loved it Luke Skywalker was awesome I

  3. loved his hair but way back in 1977 I had no idea that this would be one of seven

  4. films no idea none and so 38 years later 2015 I brought my family to see the

  5. latest kind of installment in the Star Wars area last Monday and looking back

  6. through what's what's the what's the movie called what's the latest one the

  7. Force Awakens so looking back through the Force Awakens all the way back to 1977 to

  8. that first Star Wars I realized I had no idea I had no idea that Luke Skywalker

  9. was going to point to Ray I didn't know that spoiler alert sorry no no idea 1977 there

  10. was there was a foreshadowing George Lucas knew this there was there was a

  11. foreshadowing going on of someone who would come and fulfill it later in this

  12. episode 7 in 2015 it really only makes sense when you look back through it and

  13. so this morning we're gonna look at a passage in Matthew chapter 2 verses 13

    Matthew 2:13–23

  14. through 23 in which we're gonna look back Matthew's gonna help us look back at

  15. some Old Testament passages and we're gonna see how they point to Jesus they're

  16. gonna show us how they foreshadowed this Jesus the Christ our King and what you're

  17. gonna see is Jesus is the great fulfiller he's the great fulfiller of so many Old

  18. Testament passages and where we're gonna land this plane is not only is Jesus the

  19. great fulfiller of the Old Testament but he's the great fulfiller of your deepest

  20. longing he came for you if you look at Matthew chapter 2 verses 13 what I want to

    Matthew 2:13

  21. point you to right out of the gate is the word fulfill it's used three times in this

  22. passage if you notice in verse 15 and they remain there until the death of Herod

  23. this was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet out of Egypt I called my

  24. son so note that the word fulfill there and then in verse 17 then was fulfilled

  25. what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah and then if you look at verse 23 and then

  26. and he went and lived in a city called Nazareth that what was spoken by the

  27. prophets might be fulfilled he shall be called a Nazarene and so in this passage we

  28. have three fulfillments pointing to Jesus I want to show you how now this isn't the

  29. first time the word fulfilled was used in Matthew Matthew's already used it a

  30. couple times if you look back in Matthew chapter 1 we see it in verse 22 where

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  31. Matthew is talking about the the miraculous conception and in Mary and the

  32. birth of this son whose name is Emmanuel and he's saying that fulfilled Isaiah 7 14 and

  33. then we look down at chapter 2 verse 6 verse 5 actually they told him in Bethlehem of

  34. Judea for so it is written fulfilled by the prophet and he points to Micah 5 2 the

  35. Messiah is going to come from Bethlehem fulfillment in these two

  36. fulfillments it's very clear that they're talking about the Messiah and so what we see

  37. early on in Matthew is this kind of God spoke a prophecy about the Messiah and it

  38. very specifically came true in Isaiah 7 14 and Micah 5 2 when we turn to chapter 2

  39. verses 13 through 23 it's not that clear of a fulfillment it's a different kind of

  40. fulfillment that's happening of the Old Testament instead of saying God saying

  41. something specific and specifically pointing to the Messiah in these three

  42. little fulfillments Matthew is saying that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament

  43. scripture in a different kind of way a more general way it's like the Old Testament

  44. sets kind of a trajectory it's a foreshadowing that only looking back through

  45. Christ do we see the fulfillment of it this is classically known as typology

  46. we're not going to quizzy on that don't worry about it but typology is a

  47. legitimate way of understanding fulfillment of the Old Testament in the New Testament

  48. and so just a little bit more on that when we see New Testament writers using

  49. scripture this way what they do is they're showing how Jesus fulfills kind of

  50. general themes general ideas in the Old Testament a classic example would be this

  51. remember the sacrificial system in the Old Testament the ongoing killing of animals in

  52. order to cover over sin well that is a type of sacrifice and it's a foreshadowing of something

  53. that will be fulfilled in Christ's one time sacrifice for all that's the point of Hebrews 10 and so we see

  54. this kind of fulfillment being used by New Testament writers and it's fulfillment of particular people

  55. institutions themes and so when we get to Matthew chapter 2 I want to help you to understand there's a

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  56. different kind of fulfillment of Old Testament going on here typically not what we usually think of

  57. fulfillment of prophecy it's a little broader than that and so I just thought we could just jump right in

  58. this morning and we'll look at these three fulfilleds you ready let's go

  59. fulfilled number one we see this in verse 13 through 15 now when they the magi had departed behold an angel

  60. of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said rise take the child Jesus and his mother Mary and flee to

  61. Egypt and remain there until I tell you for Herod remember he is a Simonizing politically savvy killer

  62. for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him and Joseph rose it was immediate he is

  63. quite the man he arose and took child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until

  64. the death of Herod this was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet out of Egypt I called

  65. my son now what's being quoted there is Hosea chapter 11 verse 1 out of Egypt I called my son in what

    Hosea 11:1

  66. the Hosea is talking about out of Egypt he's referencing the Exodus remember Pharaoh let my people go Moses

  67. Exodus Exodus and so what it is is a deliverance from the captivity in Egypt that's what's the backdrop

  68. there that's what's being talked about what I want you to dial in on is those words my son out of Egypt

  69. I called my son and there's two points I want to make here first one is this this is the first time

  70. in Matthew that this phrase my son is being used by God to speak about Jesus and so this is the first time

  71. we Matthew uses a prophet to communicate that that God is saying this is my boy this is my son conceived of

  72. the Holy Spirit and so Jesus this boy fully God fully man in one person

  73. here's the second thing I want you to see out of Egypt I called my son it's a reference to the people of God

  74. my son the Israelites it's a reference to a body of people and so my son is being used in Hosea 11 1 as a

  75. reference to God's people that he's delivering out of captivity from Egypt and the question becomes well how does

  76. Jesus fulfill that well he is the new my son he is the embodiment of God's new people God's new people the

  77. church all who bow the knee to Jesus become Christians they are located in the son

  78. my son my son he's the embodiment of a people delivered not from the captivity of Egypt

  79. but from the captivity of sin

  80. remember

  81. Matthew 1 21

  82. it's in the name Jesus

  83. she shall she will bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people

  84. from their sins

  85. Jesus

  86. Jesus was sent to Egypt not only to get away from the slaughter of Herod the evil king

  87. but to come out of Egypt

  88. as the my son the embodiment of a new people

  89. and that's how he fulfills

  90. Hosea 11 chapter chapter 11 verse 1 it's

  91. it's this foreshadowing fulfilled in Jesus

  92. the second fulfillment I want you to see

  93. is chapter or chapter 2 verses 16 through 18 this is a really interesting passage

  94. and I I'm telling you I had a lean heart this past week on people far wiser than me and helping understand this

  95. it says then Herod when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men the magi became furious

  96. remember he was paranoid

  97. and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem in all that region who were two years old and under according to the time that

  98. he had ascertained from all the wise men and that was based upon when the star raised from

  99. we talked about that last week

  100. and then verse 17 he says then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah

  101. a voice was heard in Ramah weeping in loud lamentation Rachel weeping for her children she refused to be comforted

  102. because they are

  103. no

  104. more

  105. verse 18

  106. what's being quoted from Jeremiah is Jeremiah chapter 31 that may ring a bell we'll come back to it chapter

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  107. Jeremiah 31 verse 15

    Jeremiah 31:15

  108. now

  109. could you imagine

  110. being a mother

  111. in Bethlehem

  112. of one of these babies

  113. that was slaughtered

  114. by Herod

  115. could you imagine the pain

  116. could you imagine that

  117. it would have been horrendous

  118. it would have been horrific

  119. deep sorrow

  120. it was a horrible wrong

  121. what I want you to see here is Matthew is very careful to make a distinction for us

  122. and so what's going on here is fulfillment of God's plan right

  123. but look who he blames

  124. verse 16 then Herod

  125. when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men became furious and he Herod sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem

  126. Matthew is very clear to be putting the blame on Herod not God for the slaughter of these baby boys

  127. I just want to make sure you see that distinction

  128. but what Matthew is saying is that this this weeping this deep sorrow going on

  129. this is fulfillment of something

  130. this is God

  131. God brought this in a way

  132. in a sovereignty and human responsibility that we don't get

  133. but God is sovereign over this

  134. their weeping

  135. points to something

  136. Jeremiah 31 15

  137. pictures Rachel

  138. sister of Leah

  139. who apparently some believe died in Ramah

  140. they

  141. Jeremiah 31 pictures her as kind of the matriarch of the children of Israel

  142. and she's weeping for them

  143. why is she weeping for them

  144. she's weeping for them because God's people are being

  145. exiled

  146. Jeremiah 31 is speaking of the

  147. exile of God's people from the land

  148. Jerusalem's been sacked

  149. and God's people are now being deported

  150. and Ramah was a staging point

  151. for the deportation of God's people to the nations

  152. to Babylon

  153. and so what we see going on here in Jeremiah

  154. in this section is not the exodus

  155. being called out of Egypt

  156. it's the exile

  157. and so why

  158. Rachel

  159. as a representative is weeping so much

  160. is because

  161. it looks like her people are seemingly no more

  162. and more significantly

  163. and more significantly

  164. perhaps

  165. is that

  166. it looks like

  167. the kingly

  168. line of David

  169. has now

  170. come to an end

  171. has ceased

  172. and so if you flip over to

  173. Matthew back to the genealogy

  174. Matthew's already hinted at this

  175. in chapter 1 verses 11 and 12

  176. and Josiah the father of Jeconiah

  177. and his brothers

  178. at the time of the deportation to Babylon

  179. that's what we're talking about right here

  180. and after the deportation of Babylon

  181. Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel

  182. and the point that we're seeing here

  183. is that

  184. there is great weeping going on

  185. in Ramah

  186. because God's people are being

  187. sent out

  188. and there's no more good king

  189. David on the throne

  190. in fact

  191. there's an evil king on the throne

  192. Nebuchadnezzar

  193. back in Jeremiah

  194. and here

  195. the evil king of course

  196. is Herod

  197. so the parallels

  198. between what's going on in Jeremiah

  199. and what's going on in Matthew 2 are

  200. we've got moms weeping for the children

  201. suffering under the reign

  202. of a foreign king

  203. because a good King David

  204. is no longer on the throne

  205. it's a fulfillment

  206. of pain and longing

  207. it's pointing to something deep

  208. it's not avoiding pain

  209. it's addressing pain

  210. and pointing to hope

  211. D.A. Carson

  212. help me out

  213. he's

  214. prof down at Trinity

  215. and to summarize what he said

  216. is

  217. the weeping that started with Rachel

  218. in this exile

  219. climaxed

  220. in the weeping

  221. of these Bethlehemite mothers

  222. it was the fulfillment

  223. of hardship of life

  224. under a foreign king

  225. it anticipates

  226. Messiah's reign

  227. coming to an end

  228. of life under exile

  229. the coming of a

  230. Davidic king

  231. out of Egypt

  232. so what I want you to

  233. be thinking about here is

  234. there's real pain here

  235. and pain is part of God's plan

  236. but pain is not the final word

  237. Jesus is the final word on pain

  238. stepping back from Jeremiah 31 15

  239. I want to remind you of Jeremiah 31

  240. Jeremiah 31 is a chapter of hope

  241. again and again

  242. God is saying to his people

  243. going into exile

  244. you're my kids

  245. you're my family

  246. you're my peeps

  247. I'm going to bring you back

  248. I'm going to regather you someday

  249. there's a future hope for you

  250. it's all around it

  251. verse 9

  252. 17

  253. 20

  254. there's a future hope

  255. for God's people

  256. even with them going into exile

  257. and do you know where he ends up

  258. pointing to

  259. and this is where Jeremiah 31

  260. might have rung a bell in your head

  261. Jeremiah 31 is home

  262. of the new covenant promise

  263. and so Jeremiah 31 talks about

  264. 33 talks about God establishing

  265. a new covenant one day

  266. with his people

  267. in which he will write

  268. his law on their hearts

  269. it's a new way of God

  270. relating to his people

  271. he's going to bring them back

  272. and he's going to relate

  273. with them in a new way

  274. now this is where

  275. I want to aim you at Jesus

  276. the night before Jesus was crucified

  277. he was in an opera room

  278. having a meal with his disciples

  279. do you remember what he did?

  280. he broke bread

  281. he poured out wine

  282. he said of the bread

  283. this is my body

  284. given for you

  285. take and eat

  286. do you remember that?

  287. and then he said of the wine

  288. this is my blood

  289. of the covenant

  290. the new covenant

  291. which is poured out

  292. for many

  293. for the forgiveness

  294. of sins

  295. Jesus

  296. is the fulfillment

  297. of the new covenant

  298. he's the hope

  299. even in the face

  300. of great pain

  301. he's the hope

  302. new way in which

  303. God relates

  304. with a new people

  305. Matthew is saying

  306. that the weeping

  307. of these mothers

  308. in Bethlehem

  309. is the fulfillment

  310. of the misery

  311. of God's people

  312. living in exile

  313. under the reign

  314. of a non-David king

  315. and ultimately

  316. the longing

  317. we see in these moms

  318. the longing we see

  319. in Rachel

  320. is our longing

  321. longing to come

  322. under the life-giving

  323. reign of Jesus

  324. to know him

  325. and trust him

  326. and experience

  327. the goodness

  328. of his ways

  329. and so what we see

  330. happening in this

  331. little section

  332. it's like this dark

  333. backdrop

  334. on a stage

  335. it's very dark

  336. but

  337. in comes

  338. the spotlight

  339. on Jesus

  340. the fulfillment

  341. of this

  342. experience

  343. anticipates

  344. King Jesus

  345. one last fulfilled

  346. the return

  347. to Nazareth

  348. chapter 2

  349. verses 9

  350. through 23

  351. but when Herod died

  352. behold an angel

  353. of the Lord

  354. appeared in a dream

  355. to Joseph

  356. in Egypt

  357. saying rise

  358. take the children

  359. and his mother

  360. and go to the land

  361. of Israel

  362. for those who sought

  363. the child's life

  364. are dead

  365. now so

  366. the holy family

  367. is in Egypt now

  368. an angel of the Lord

  369. appears to them

  370. in a dream

  371. says okay

  372. it's time to go back

  373. go back to Israel

  374. Herod's dead now

  375. and so

  376. Joseph again

  377. immediately obeys

  378. he rose

  379. took the child

  380. Jesus

  381. and his mother

  382. Mary

  383. and they went

  384. back to the land

  385. of Israel

  386. presumably

  387. seeking to get

  388. back to Bethlehem

  389. but when he heard

  390. that Archelaus

  391. was reigning

  392. over Judea

  393. Archelaus

  394. was one of

  395. Herod the Great's

  396. jerky sons

  397. he was awful

  398. terrible

  399. and he was

  400. in this position

  401. of authority

  402. for like two years

  403. and then he got canned

  404. he was so bad

  405. but when he heard

  406. that Archelaus

  407. was reigning

  408. over Judea

  409. in the place

  410. of his father

  411. Herod

  412. Joseph was afraid

  413. to go there

  414. and being warned

  415. in a dream

  416. God intervenes

  417. he withdrew

  418. to the district

  419. of Galilee

  420. so they're going

  421. to go back

  422. to Bethlehem

  423. in southern

  424. Israel

  425. but God intervenes

  426. and they go

  427. up to Galilee

  428. which is in northern

  429. Israel

  430. and in the district

  431. of Galilee

  432. is this little town

  433. called

  434. Nazareth

  435. and he went

  436. and lived in a city

  437. called Nazareth

  438. more like a town

  439. that what

  440. that what was

  441. spoken by the

  442. prophets

  443. plural

  444. might be

  445. fulfilled

  446. he shall be

  447. called

  448. a Nazarene

  449. so I want you

  450. to see that

  451. it's prophets

  452. plural

  453. so there's more

  454. than one prophet

  455. that is apparently

  456. spoken of Jesus

  457. being from Nazareth

  458. and whatever

  459. the fulfillment is

  460. it's got something

  461. to do with Nazareth

  462. the challenge is

  463. that if you

  464. search through

  465. your Old Testament

  466. there is no

  467. specific quote

  468. he shall be

  469. called a Nazarene

  470. stated like that

  471. in your Old Testament

  472. it poses quite a

  473. challenge

  474. and so we got

  475. to ask the question

  476. well what's being

  477. said here

  478. and what I want

  479. to help you to see

  480. is that there is

  481. a trajectory

  482. a foreshadowing

  483. in the Old Testament

  484. that points to

  485. Nazareth

  486. and Jesus being

  487. a Nazarene

  488. fulfillment of it

  489. there are

  490. two really good

  491. explanations

  492. for this

  493. and

  494. they

  495. don't have to be

  496. one or the other

  497. so let me

  498. give you the

  499. explanation for

  500. this he shall

  501. be called

  502. a Nazarene

  503. if it's not

  504. explicitly stated

  505. in the Old Testament

  506. that word

  507. Nazareth

  508. sounds like

  509. a Hebrew word

  510. Nazer

  511. which means

  512. branch

  513. and if you

  514. flip back

  515. in your Bibles

  516. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 11:1

  517. chapter 11

  518. verse 1

  519. Isaiah

  520. uses

  521. this

  522. unique word

  523. Nazer

  524. to describe

  525. the Messiah

  526. there shall

  527. come forth

  528. a shoot

  529. from the

  530. stump

  531. of Jesse

  532. talking about

  533. the David's

  534. line

  535. and a branch

  536. a Nazer

  537. from his roots

  538. shall bear fruit

  539. and the spirit

  540. of the Lord

  541. shall rest upon

  542. him

  543. the spirit

  544. of wisdom

  545. and understanding

  546. the spirit

  547. of counsel

  548. and might

  549. the spirit

  550. of knowledge

  551. and the fear

  552. of the Lord

  553. and he

  554. in his delight

  555. shall be the fear

  556. of the Lord

  557. I just love that

  558. speaking of the Messiah

  559. and so what

  560. Matthew appears

  561. to be doing

  562. and he can

  563. because he's an

  564. inspired writer

  565. of scripture

  566. he's saying that

  567. there's a word

  568. play going on

  569. here

  570. and Nazareth

  571. should make you

  572. think

  573. branch

  574. which makes

  575. you think

  576. Messiah

  577. which helps

  578. you to see

  579. that Jesus

  580. he's the Messiah

  581. and his ending

  582. up in Nazareth

  583. was part of

  584. God's plan

  585. there's another

  586. passage

  587. another passage

  588. in Jeremiah

  589. another prophet

  590. that speaks of

  591. doesn't use

  592. Nazareth language

  593. but uses

  594. the word

  595. branch

  596. to speak

  597. of

  598. the Messiah

  599. it's

  600. Jeremiah 23

  601. 5-8

  602. Samir pointed

  603. this out to me

  604. this past week

  605. I'm so grateful

  606. for him

  607. but what it

  608. points to

  609. is the Davidic

  610. Messiah

  611. will come

  612. back

  613. and he will

  614. set up shop

  615. let me just

  616. read it

  617. behold the days

  618. are coming

  619. declares the

  620. Lord

  621. when I will

  622. raise up

  623. for David

  624. a righteous

  625. branch

  626. and he shall

  627. reign as

  628. king

  629. and deal

  630. wisely

  631. and shall

  632. execute

  633. justice

  634. and righteousness

  635. in the land

  636. in his days

  637. Judah will be

  638. saved

  639. and Israel

  640. will dwell

  641. securely

  642. in this

  643. is the name

  644. by which

  645. he will be

  646. called

  647. the Lord

  648. is our

  649. righteousness

  650. he's going to

  651. deliver God's

  652. people out of

  653. captivity to sin

  654. and so

  655. one way of

  656. understanding

  657. this Nazareth

  658. quote is that

  659. it's actually

  660. pointing to

  661. branch language

  662. the other way

  663. to explain it

  664. is by

  665. understanding

  666. what Nazareth

  667. represents

  668. Nazareth

  669. was a

  670. despised

  671. place

  672. and

  673. despised

  674. places

  675. produce

  676. despised

  677. people

  678. generally

  679. speaking

  680. and so

  681. what

  682. Matthew

  683. according to

  684. this

  685. understanding

  686. explanation

  687. is

  688. what

  689. Matthew

  690. is doing

  691. is

  692. talking

  693. about

  694. the

  695. reputation

  696. of the

  697. Messiah

  698. that he

  699. would be

  700. despised

  701. do you

  702. remember

  703. back in

  704. John 1

  705. Philip

  706. he runs

  707. to his

  708. brother

  709. Nathaniel

  710. and he

  711. says

  712. Nathaniel

  713. we

  714. found the

  715. one

  716. that the

  717. law of

  718. Moses

  719. was speaking

  720. of

  721. Jesus

  722. of

  723. Nazareth

  724. and then

  725. in

  726. 146

  727. do you

  728. remember

  729. what

  730. Nathaniel

  731. said

  732. does

  733. anything

  734. good

  735. come out

  736. of

  737. Nazareth

  738. it was

  739. a backwater

  740. town

  741. didn't have

  742. a good

  743. reputation

  744. at all

  745. and so

  746. the idea

  747. here is

  748. that

  749. Matthew

  750. by saying

  751. that

  752. Jesus

  753. is a

  754. Nazarene

  755. actually

  756. is a

  757. fulfillment

  758. of the

  759. passages

  760. in the

  761. Old

  762. Testament

  763. that talk

  764. about the

  765. Messiah

  766. as being

  767. despised

  768. Psalm 22

  769. Psalm 69

  770. and of course

  771. the great

  772. one

  773. Isaiah 53

  774. 2-3

  775. for he grew

  776. up before

  777. him like

  778. a young

  779. plant

  780. like a

  781. root

  782. out of

  783. dry

  784. ground

  785. he had

  786. no

  787. form

  788. or

  789. majesty

  790. that

  791. we

  792. should

  793. look

  794. at

  795. him

  796. and

  797. no

  798. beauty

  799. that

  800. we

  801. should

  802. desire

  803. him

  804. he

  805. was

  806. despised

  807. and

  808. rejected

  809. by

  810. men

  811. a

  812. man

  813. of

  814. sorrows

  815. and

  816. acquainted

  817. with

  818. grief

  819. and

  820. as

  821. one

  822. from

  823. whom

  824. men

  825. hide

  826. their

  827. faces

  828. he

  829. was

  830. despised

  831. and

  832. we

  833. I love

  834. this

  835. explanation

  836. I like

  837. the

  838. Nazar

  839. explanation

  840. too

  841. they both

  842. are very

  843. helpful

  844. but the

  845. fulfillment

  846. would be

  847. this

  848. Nazareth

  849. represents

  850. the reputation

  851. of

  852. Jesus

  853. he's a

  854. Nazarene

  855. and I

  856. just want

  857. to remind

  858. you

  859. this

  860. Isaiah 53

  861. it's

  862. messianic

  863. it's

  864. it's a

  865. prophecy

  866. of the

  867. coming

  868. suffering

  869. servant

  870. he

  871. would

  872. be

  873. despised

  874. he

  875. would

  876. suffer

  877. he

  878. would

  879. be

  880. shamed

  881. by

  882. people

  883. but in

  884. verse 5

  885. and 6

  886. of

  887. Isaiah

  888. 53

  889. but he

  890. was

  891. wounded

  892. for our

  893. transgressions

  894. he was

  895. crushed

  896. for our

  897. iniquities

  898. upon him

  899. this

  900. despised

  901. one

  902. was the

  903. chastisement

  904. that brought

  905. us peace

  906. and with

  907. his stripes

  908. we're

  909. healed

  910. all we

  911. like

  912. sheep

  913. have gone

  914. astray

  915. we have

  916. turned

  917. everyone

  918. to his

  919. own

  920. way

  921. and the

  922. Lord

  923. has laid

  924. on him

  925. the

  926. iniquity

  927. of us

  928. all

  929. this

  930. despised

  931. one

  932. is our

  933. savior

  934. substitute

  935. who died

  936. in our

  937. place

  938. these

  939. are

  940. two

  941. options

  942. of

  943. explaining

  944. this

  945. he

  946. will

  947. be

  948. called

  949. a

  950. Nazarene

  951. he brought about by the shedding of his blood.

  952. And so the point of all this,

  953. and I thank you so much for hanging in there.

  954. I know this was kind of heavy lifting mentally.

  955. The point of it all is that

  956. what was written long ago

  957. in a country far, far away,

  958. what Matthew is saying about Jesus

  959. is that he fulfilled God's eternal plan

  960. for the salvation of sinners like you and me.

  961. Jesus is the great fulfiller.

  962. He is the focal point of God's plan of salvation.

  963. He's the great king from David's line

  964. whose kingship brings eternal life and joy

  965. to those who know pain

  966. and suffering and heartache

  967. and the consequences of sins.

  968. He fulfills our greatest longing.

  969. And so this morning I want to walk away

  970. with three things on your mind.

  971. In light of Matthew 2, 13 through 23,

  972. we can walk out of here knowing that God is sovereign.

  973. Sovereign over it all.

  974. Fulfill, fulfill, fulfill.

  975. He reigns over it.

  976. It's his plan being carried out.

  977. But what I want to just put in your head in there is

  978. pain is part of his plan.

  979. But it's not the final word.

  980. It's not the final word.

  981. Jesus is the final word.

  982. We sang it already.

  983. Revelation 21.

  984. When Jesus comes back,

  985. he's going to take his finger

  986. and wipe away every tear from our face.

  987. He's the final word on pain.

  988. He knows pain.

  989. God is sovereign.

  990. God is loving.

  991. This plan that we see being fulfilled here

  992. in Matthew 2,

  993. this plan is a loving plan of fulfillment.

  994. It's aimed.

  995. It's a glorious plan for our greatest good

  996. to rescue sinners from their sins.

  997. That's what it's all about.

  998. And God's doing it out of love for us.

  999. So God is sovereign.

  1000. God is loving.

1001. And Jesus is worth it all.

  1002. He's the fulfillment of God's plan

  1003. for the ages

1004. and the fulfillment of your deepest longing.

  1005. It's all about Jesus.

1006. He's the great fulfiller of Scripture.

1007. And He's the great fulfiller of sinners' hearts.

1008. Let's turn to Him in prayer.

1009. Lord Jesus, we are so grateful

1010. we feel the limits of our brains

1011. when we read passages like this, God.

1012. But we're so glad that You're sovereign,

  1013. that You're loving,

1014. and we see that Jesus is worth it all.

  1015. God, we're so grateful

1016. that You sent Jesus for us.

  1017. We're so grateful

1018. that You don't bypass our pain.

1019. We know that You can use it for good.

1020. Lord Jesus, we recognize You

  1021. as the great fulfiller,

1022. and we are looking forward

1023. to seeing how You fulfill

1024. the law and the prophets

1025. that all would be accomplished

  1026. in Matthew 5.

1027. Thank You, Jesus, for this time.

  1028. Amen.
