  1. Well, the next four Sundays we'll be making our way through Matthew chapter 3 and Matthew chapter 4.

Matthew 3 chapter mention Matthew 4 chapter mention

  2. And there are four sermons coming up.

  3. And if there was going to be a banner that kind of flown over these four sermons,

  4. there would be a phrase over it.

  5. And you can find that phrase at the end of Matthew chapter 4 verse 16.

    Matthew 4:16

  6. A light has dawned.

  7. And so over the next four weeks, we're going to work our way through Matthew chapters 3 and 4,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  8. and we're going to see the beginning of the ministry of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

  9. And so this morning we're going to look at John the Baptist,

  10. and the next week we're going to look at the baptism of Jesus,

  11. and then we're going to look at the temptation of Jesus,

  12. and then we're going to look at the start of the ministry of Jesus at the end of January.

  13. It's all about Jesus.

  14. It's all about King Jesus.

  15. Who He is, what He's done, what He's doing,

  16. it's all about Him.

  17. It's all about His grace.

  18. So would you turn with me now to Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3:1–12

  19. verses 1 through 12.

  20. And this passage you can just sum up by saying,

  21. John the Baptist is preparing the way for King Jesus.

  22. He's preparing the way.

  23. And we're going to see a few ways in which He prepares the way.

  24. But first, have you ever seen a royal procession before?

  25. Maybe you've seen it in person.

  26. Maybe you've seen it in a movie.

  27. Usually what happens, there's a king royalty in some kind of cart.

  28. And usually, if your mind works like me,

  29. it's kind of you imagine this king in a cart,

  30. and he's being kind of carried by these kind of burly slaves.

  31. You know, they're a cart with poles on it,

  32. and they're kind of walking through a city.

  33. And so in front of this cart,

  34. there is someone announcing to all in the city

  35. who's coming behind him.

  36. And usually this one who's making the announcement

  37. is not just informing people,

  38. but he's calling people to respond.

  39. Bow down, the king is coming.

  40. The king approaches.

  41. The king is in your midst.

  42. Make way.

  43. Make way.

  44. The king has come.

  45. And so that man who's preparing the way of the king,

  46. he's not drawing attention to himself.

  47. He's drawing attention to the one that's coming after him.

  48. Because the king that follows him is mightier than he.

  49. And so Matthew 3, 1 through 12,

  50. is all about John the Baptist

  51. proclaiming and making way for this one who's coming after him.

  52. Up until this point in Matthew,

  53. Matthew has been seeking to convince us

  54. that this baby Jesus is Emmanuel,

  55. the only one who has a rightful claim to the throne of David.

  56. This is the long-anticipated one, the king, King Jesus.

  57. And so what you need to realize about Matthew 3, verse 1,

    Matthew 3:1

  58. is something happens between Matthew 2, 23 and Matthew 3, 1.

  59. And so if you look back in your Bibles to Matthew 2, 23,

  60. we're talking about Jesus, Joseph, Mary,

  61. heading back to Nazareth when Jesus was just a little boy,

  62. maybe two.

  63. And then in chapter 3, verse 1,

  64. all of a sudden we're transported forward a couple decades.

  65. And so what we'll see in verse 13 of chapter 3

  66. is that Jesus comes on the scene as a man.

  67. And so what you need to know from the get-go

  68. is there's been a couple decades

  69. that have already elapsed between chapter 2 and chapter 3.

  70. And John the Baptist seems to come out of nowhere

  71. to announce the coming of the long-awaited king.

  72. And not just to announce,

  73. but to call for a response.

  74. 2,000 years ago and now.

  75. And so he comes to prepare the way of King Jesus,

  76. and he's going to call us to respond in three ways.

  77. He's going to call us to repent.

  78. And then he's going to confront presumption in us.

  79. And then he's going to point us to the one mightier

  80. than any of us.

  81. He's going to point us to Jesus.

  82. And so let's just jump right in.

  83. Verses 1 through 6.

  84. I'm going to walk through kind of three scenes.

  85. And then we'll land this plane at the end.

  86. What you need to notice first in chapter 3, verse 1,

  87. is that John the Baptist came,

  88. and he came preaching.

  89. He came declaring.

  90. He came announcing.

  91. He came speaking.

  92. The focus is on his voice.

  93. Announcing something.

  94. And if you look down at verse 4,

  95. you quickly realize this is a unique dude

  96. based upon what he was wearing.

  97. Now John wore a garment of camel's hair

  98. and a leather belt around his waist,

  99. and his food was locusts and wild honey.

  100. You just don't see that too often nowadays.

  101. I like ponchos.

  102. And I know how to find a cheap poncho.

  103. Anybody else use a 30-gallon trash bag as a poncho?

  104. It's really simple.

  105. I see that hand back there.

  106. Cut out the, you know, neck,

  107. little holes in the arm.

  108. You can bring it down.

  109. Looks great.

  110. Cheap.

  111. Water repellent.

  112. John the Baptist is basically wearing a poncho of camel hair.

  113. That's what he's doing.

  114. It was cheap and available.

  115. Camel hair.

  116. Wrapped around his waist with a big belt.

  117. He's eating locusts, which were a big grasshopper.

  118. People still eat them in the region today?

  119. Dip them in wild honey?

  120. They're delicious, I guess.

  121. I would not know.

  122. But what you understand is,

  123. why is this guy dressed in camel hair?

  124. Why is he eating grasshoppers and wild honey?

  125. Well, he's living a very basic life,

  126. a very simple life,

  127. a minimalistic life,

  128. because he's all in for the calling on his life.

  129. He's declaring.

  130. He's announcing.

  131. He's preparing the way of the Lord.

  132. And what you need to see is,

  133. if you flip back in your Bibles to 2 Kings 1.8,

  134. do you know who else was wearing a poncho

  135. of kind of camel hair?

  136. Elijah.

  137. Later in Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  138. Jesus says that John is the second Elijah who has come.

  139. And so what you need to know from the get-go is,

  140. John is the baptizer,

  141. but what you need to realize is,

  142. John is a prophet.

  143. And he's declaring a message of repentance,

  144. calling God's people back to himself.

  145. So he's a prophet.

  146. And the next thing you need to see here

  147. is that this John the Baptist,

  148. he fulfills prophecy.

  149. He's a prophet who fulfills prophecy.

  150. His ministry is a fulfillment ministry.

  151. And so if you look at chapter 3, verse 3,

  152. it says,

  153. For this is he, John the Baptist,

  154. who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah

  155. when he said,

  156. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  157. prepare the way of the Lord,

  158. make his path straight.

  159. The voice of one calling in the wilderness.

  160. John is proclaiming the kingdom.

  161. And he's in the wilderness,

  162. 20 miles east of Jerusalem,

  163. along the Jordan,

  164. in the wilderness of Judea.

  165. And so what Matthew is pointing out here is,

  166. it's no coincidence that this guy

  167. in the camel poncho is preaching

  168. what he's preaching.

  169. This was God's plan.

  170. He is the forerunner of the Christ.

  171. This was all according to the will of God.

  172. And his ministry is one of preparation.

  173. We see it in the message itself.

  174. And so if you look back at verse 2,

  175. you see the message of John the Baptist,

  176. what he's declaring.

  177. He's saying,

  178. Repent!

  179. Repent!

  180. Repent!

  181. Do you know what the word repentance means?

  182. The Greek mind would take the word repentance

  183. as simple like change of mind.

  184. It would have been very just kind of common.

  185. It would be like,

  186. alright,

  187. I pull out my drawer,

  188. oh,

  189. I'm thinking about wearing my striped socks.

  190. Oh no,

  191. I repent.

  192. I change my mind.

  193. I'm going to wear my polka dotted socks.

  194. And so for the Greek mind,

  195. it was just kind of changing your mind.

  196. But for the biblical authors,

  197. for the Jewish mind,

  198. oh,

  199. repentance meant so much more.

  200. Repentance,

  201. biblically speaking,

  202. is a radical reorientation

  203. of one's entire life.

  204. It's turning away from living life

  205. with me at the middle of my life,

  206. and it's a turning from that

  207. and turning and reorienting

  208. all of who I am

  209. to living for God and to others.

  210. That's what repentance is.

  211. John the Baptist is calling people

  212. to turn from their sin

  213. and turn to living to God

  214. and all of who they are.

  215. It was a message of repentance.

  216. And then notice,

  217. he gives the reason why.

  218. Repent,

  219. for the kingdom of heaven

  220. is at hand.

  221. He gives the reason.

  222. Now,

  223. the kingdom of heaven

  224. is a phrase unique to Matthew.

  225. And we show,

  226. it's basically the same idea

  227. as the other gospel writers

  228. who talk about the kingdom of God.

  229. And so,

  230. what Matthew is saying,

  231. that John is saying,

  232. is he's repent,

  233. for the kingdom of heaven

  234. is here.

  235. It's arrived.

  236. It's present now.

  237. There's some speculation

  238. of why Matthew uses

  239. the phrase kingdom of heaven.

  240. He's writing to a Jewish audience,

  241. and so,

  242. a good idea is that

  243. he didn't want to use

  244. the name of God

  245. in order to offend

  246. the Jewish audience.

  247. So,

  248. he's talking about

  249. the kingdom of heaven.

  250. What you need to be thinking,

  251. though,

  252. when you hear that phrase,

  253. kingdom of heaven,

  254. don't be thinking

  255. blocks and gates.

  256. Don't be thinking that way.

  257. Here's what you need to be thinking.

  258. When you hear the phrase

  259. kingdom of heaven

  260. or kingdom of God,

  261. you need to be thinking

  262. about the active reign

  263. of King Jesus.

  264. The active,

  265. dynamic,

  266. reign of King Jesus.

  267. His present rule.

  268. And so,

  269. the king of the kingdom of heaven

  270. is King Jesus.

  271. And so,

  272. the inbreaking of the kingdom,

  273. the presence of the kingdom,

  274. is the arrival of Jesus.

  275. And so,

  276. what John is saying is,

  277. repent,

  278. because

  279. God is now reigning

  280. on earth in Jesus,

  281. and that reign

  282. is going to spread.

  283. The Messiah has arrived.

  284. Another way

  285. to say it is,

  286. change your living

  287. because the king

  288. has come.

  289. And he's brought

  290. with him

  291. his rule,

  292. his gracious rule,

  293. his holy rule.

  294. Live in light

  295. of who he is.

  296. And then in verses 5 and 6,

  297. we see the response.

  298. All sorts of people

  299. are coming out of Jerusalem,

  300. Judea,

  301. and the surrounding areas,

  302. and they're going out to him.

  303. And the question is,

  304. why are they going out to him?

  305. Did they hear about

  306. his camel poncho?

  307. Did they want to see

  308. the latest fashion

  309. and prophetic wardrobe?

  310. Is that what they wanted to do?

  311. No.

  312. They got wind

  313. that a prophet's in town.

  314. There's a prophet

  315. in the wilderness

  316. declaring repentance.

  317. There's been 400 years

  318. of silence,

  319. and now God is speaking again,

  320. calling his people

  321. to come back to him.

  322. And the people respond

  323. to this call to repentance.

  324. Those who go out to him,

  325. they respond.

  326. And they respond

  327. by being baptized.

  328. They respond

  329. by confessing their sins.

  330. Real repentance

  331. shows up

  332. in the real confession

  333. of real sin.

  334. The recognition

  335. that yes,

  336. I am a sinner,

  337. and I have committed sins,

  338. and I confess them,

  339. and I'm repenting of them.

  340. I'm turning from them.

  341. And baptism

  342. was simply

  343. this demonstration

  344. that they were,

  345. yes, repenting.

  346. Demonstrating publicly

  347. that yes,

  348. I am saying,

  349. no more to that lifestyle.

  350. That was what I used to be.

  351. This is a tremendous

  352. step of humility.

  353. One other thing

  354. you've got to realize

  355. about this baptism

  356. going on.

  357. John was baptizing Jews.

  358. Back in the day,

  359. baptism would be something

  360. Jews would do

  361. to Gentiles

  362. in order for them

  363. to become

  364. Jewish converts.

  365. And so,

  366. for a Jew

  367. to baptize a Jew

  368. was unheard of.

  369. This is

  370. something unique

  371. going on.

  372. So,

  373. it appears

  374. that God,

  375. we come to the end

  376. of this passage

  377. or this section

  378. in verse 6,

  379. it appears God

  380. is on the move again.

  381. We've had a prophet

  382. sighting on the outskirts

  383. of the Judean wilderness

  384. on the Jordan River.

  385. You know,

  386. one of the questions

  387. we could ask

  388. is if you were in Jerusalem,

  389. you heard about this guy,

  390. what would you have done?

  391. Would you have gone

  392. to see him?

  393. So,

  394. John the Baptist

  395. was creating

  396. quite a stir

  397. and the people

  398. in Jerusalem

  399. were flocking to him

  400. and it would have

  401. aroused

  402. the interest

  403. and suspicion

  404. of the religious

  405. establishment.

  406. So,

  407. now we move

  408. to the second scene

  409. in verses 7-10

  410. where we see

  411. John the Baptist

  412. having called people

  413. to repentance,

  414. now he's going

  415. to confront

  416. presumption.

  417. He's preparing

  418. the way

  419. of King Jesus

  420. and

  421. he says

  422. some hard things.

  423. In verse 7

  424. we read,

  425. but when he saw

  426. many of the Pharisees

  427. and Sadducees

  428. coming for his baptism

  429. and what you need

  430. to realize

  431. is that these Pharisees

  432. and Sadducees,

  433. they were a delegation

  434. sent from

  435. the Sanhedrin

  436. which was

  437. kind of the religious

  438. establishment leadership

  439. in Jerusalem,

  440. they were sent

  441. to go check

  442. what's going on

  443. on the Jordan

  444. with John the Baptist

  445. out.

  446. And so,

  447. what you need

  448. to realize

  449. is they're not

  450. going to be

  451. baptized.

  452. They're going

  453. to check out

  454. what's going on.

  455. And so,

  456. they're being sent

  457. and what you also

  458. need to know

  459. is Pharisees

  460. and Sadducees

  461. were two very

  462. different theological

  463. groups.

  464. Pharisees,

  465. they believed

  466. all of the Old Testament,

  467. they were committed

  468. to the oral law,

  469. they were known

  470. for making rules

  471. upon rules

  472. upon rules

  473. to apply

  474. the oral law

  475. to everyday life

  476. and they were

  477. just known

  478. for making

  479. so many rules

  480. that nobody

  481. could fulfill

  482. them all,

  483. nobody could

  484. obey them all.

  485. They believed

  486. in the resurrection,

  487. the Sadducees,

  488. good way I learned

  489. this,

  490. they were sad,

  491. you see,

  492. because they didn't

  493. believe in the

  494. resurrection,

  495. they maintained,

  496. they were committed

  497. just to the authority

  498. of the first five

  499. books of the Bible,

  500. they were an

  501. aristocratic group,

  502. they were a priestly

  503. group,

  504. so they were tied

  505. to the temple

  506. and they were

  507. just well connected

  508. and so you have

  509. two very different

  510. theological groups

  511. but they share

  512. a common political

  513. mission

  514. and that is

  515. to stay in power.

  516. And so the Sanhedrin

  517. sends them out

  518. to the Jordan

  519. to check out

  520. what's going on

  521. with John the Baptist.

  522. And so they

  523. weren't there

  524. to repent,

  525. they were there

  526. to do some

  527. recon.

  528. And John

  529. confronts it.

  530. Look at verse

  531. seven.

  532. I just wouldn't

  533. recommend this

  534. approach.

  535. If you're going

  536. to kind of like

  537. a family gathering,

  538. I just wouldn't

  539. recommend this

  540. approach.

  541. He starts off

  542. by saying,

  543. you brood

  544. of vipers.

  545. A brood

  546. is an offspring

  547. of vipers.

  548. Snakes.

  549. You offspring

  550. of snakes.

  551. Snakes!

  552. You snakes!

  553. And then sarcastically

  554. he asks this,

  555. John the Baptist,

  556. who warned you

  557. to flee the wrath

  558. to come?

  559. What are you

  560. doing here?

  561. Because we know

  562. you're not here

  563. to repent.

  564. What are you

  565. doing here,

  566. you brood

  567. of vipers?

  568. And then he

  569. says,

  570. hey,

  571. bear fruit

  572. in keeping

  573. with repentance.

  574. He calls them

  575. to change their

  576. ways.

  577. True repentance

  578. of one sin

  579. results in a

  580. changed life,

  581. a bearing of

  582. a new kind

  583. of fruit,

  584. of good fruit,

  585. godliness,

  586. a life lived

  587. to God

  588. and for the

  589. good of others.

  590. And we all

  591. know that can

  592. only happen

  593. through Jesus.

  594. But what I

  595. want you to

  596. key in here

  597. is in verse

  598. nine.

  599. In the ESV,

  600. he says,

  601. and do not

  602. presume to

  603. say to

  604. yourselves,

  605. we have

  606. Abraham as

  607. our father.

  608. For I

  609. tell you,

  610. God is

  611. able from

  612. these stones

  613. to raise

  614. up children

  615. for Abraham.

  616. Do not

  617. presume.

  618. What John

  619. is saying

  620. to these

  621. Pharisees

  622. and Sadducees

  623. is that

  624. you're not

  625. saved from

  626. the wrath

  627. to come

  628. because of

  629. your genetic

  630. relationship

  631. to Abraham.

  632. Don't

  633. presume you're

  634. saved when

  635. you're not.

  636. Don't base

  637. your salvation

  638. on your

  639. relationship

  640. to this

  641. guy or

  642. how well

  643. you know

  644. your Bibles.

  645. That's not

  646. how a sinner

  647. is saved

  648. from the wrath

  649. of God.

  650. He's basically

  651. saying,

  652. don't think

  653. that you are

  654. something when

  655. you're not.

  656. Don't think

  657. that you're

  658. saved when

  659. actually you're

  660. not.

  661. It's a hard

  662. thing to say

  663. to someone.

  664. He brings

  665. up Abraham.

  666. And we can

  667. ask the question,

  668. well,

  669. how did

  670. Abraham get

  671. saved?

  672. I mean,

  673. back in

  674. Genesis 15,

  675. was God

  676. so impressed

  677. with Abraham's

  678. righteous living

  679. that God

  680. essentially said

  681. Abraham,

  682. man,

  683. you live

  684. such a

  685. godly life.

  686. I don't

  687. need to do

  688. anything to

  689. save you.

  690. Let me

  691. just kind

  692. of rubber

  693. stamp it.

  694. You're

  695. in,

  696. buddy.

  697. You're

  698. in.

  699. Impressive

  700. life.

  701. Very

  702. impressive.

  703. That's not

  704. what saved

  705. Abraham.

  706. In Genesis

  707. 15,

  708. 6,

  709. we read

  710. this.

  711. Abraham

  712. believed

  713. God and

  714. it was

  715. credited to

  716. him as

  717. righteousness.

  718. God

  719. accepted

  720. Abraham,

  721. not on

  722. the basis

  723. of his

  724. works,

  725. but on

  726. the basis

  727. of his

  728. faith in

  729. God.

  730. On the

  731. basis of

  732. God's

  733. kindness

  734. and grace

  735. to him.

  736. It's all

  737. about God's

  738. grace.

  739. It's always

  740. been about

  741. God's grace.

  742. Trusting

  743. in him.

  744. God's

  745. grace is

  746. his

  747. undeserved

  748. favor.

  749. I learned

  750. early on

  751. an acronym.

  752. God's

  753. riches at

  754. Christ's

  755. expense.

  756. Grace.

  757. You don't

  758. deserve it.

  759. You don't

  760. earn it.

  761. You can't.

  762. God loves

  763. us,

  764. not because

  765. we're

  766. lovable,

  767. but because

  768. God is

  769. loving.

  770. It's who

  771. he is.

  772. he loves

  773. us even

  774. as we

  775. are,

  776. sinners.

  777. And what

  778. we see

  779. here is

  780. at least

  781. some people

  782. are willing

  783. to admit

  784. that they're

  785. sinners.

  786. Not

  787. everybody

  788. does.

  789. The

  790. Pharisees

  791. and Sadducees

  792. were not

  793. willing to

  794. admit that.

  795. They thought

  796. God accepted

  797. them because

  798. of their

  799. linkage to

  800. Abraham or

  801. how clean

  802. and separate

  803. they were

  804. from the

  805. sinful

  806. rabble.

  807. That's not

  808. how God's

  809. grace works.

  810. We see

  811. God's

  812. amazing

  813. grace.

  814. We just

  815. get a

  816. hint of

  817. it in

  818. verse 9.

  819. We read

  820. it.

  821. We have

  822. Abraham as

  823. our father.

  824. Do not

  825. presume to

  826. say to

  827. yourself,

  828. hey,

  829. we're

  830. saved because

  831. Abraham is

  832. our father.

  833. For I

  834. tell you,

  835. God is

  836. able,

  837. from these

  838. lifeless

  839. stones,

  840. and John

  841. the Baptist

  842. is pointing

  843. to the

  844. stones in

  845. the Jordan,

  846. God is

  847. able,

  848. from these

  849. lifeless

  850. stones,

  851. to raise

  852. up children

  853. for Abraham.

  854. It's all

  855. about God's

  856. grace.

  857. God's power

  858. to save

  859. is not

  860. limited to

  861. DNA or

  862. man-made

  863. religious

  864. traditions.

  865. Christians.

  866. It's all

  867. by His

  868. grace.

  869. And so

  870. what we

  871. see in

  872. these

  873. Pharisees

  874. and

  875. Sadducees,

  876. this delegation

  877. that's come

  878. out to do

  879. some recon,

  880. there is a

  881. presumption.

  882. There is

  883. arrogance that

  884. they're in

  885. good standing

  886. with God

  887. because they're

  888. related to

  889. Abraham.

  890. It's like

  891. they carry

  892. an Abraham

  893. card and

  894. they pull it

  895. out and

  896. there's this

  897. unfolding of

  898. the Abrahamic

  899. family tree and

  900. they're like,

  901. there's Abraham,

  902. there's me,

  903. I'm in.

  904. Hey,

  905. everything's

  906. cool.

  907. I couldn't

  908. be further

  909. from the

  910. truth.

  911. We're not

  912. saved based

  913. upon our

  914. relationship to

  915. other people,

  916. humans.

  917. It's all

  918. about God

  919. and His

  920. grace and

  921. reconciling us

  922. to Himself.

  923. And you've

  924. got to ask

  925. the question,

  926. why was

  927. John so

  928. ticked?

  929. Because

  930. he's not

  931. pulling any

  932. punches either.

  933. Not only

  934. are these

  935. Pharisees and

  936. Sadducees,

  937. are they

  938. believing

  939. something wrong,

  940. they're actually

  941. teaching other

  942. people to

  943. believe the

  944. same thing.

  945. You can see

  946. why he would

  947. be so

  948. confrontational.

  949. Jesus will

  950. later call the

  951. Pharisees

  952. whitewashed

  953. tombs.

  954. who tie up

  955. burdens on

  956. people that

  957. they can't

  958. carry.

  959. Later in

  960. Matthew 23,

  961. Jesus drops

  962. some woe,

  963. W-O-E

  964. bombs on

  965. the Pharisees.

  966. Woe to

  967. you, you

  968. hypocrites.

  969. So John is

  970. confronting these

  971. arrogant religious

  972. leaders.

  973. You think you're

  974. safe when you're

  975. really not.

  976. You need to

  977. repent.

  978. You need to

  979. confront your

  980. presumption and

  981. you need to

  982. turn from it.

  983. And in

  984. verses 10 and

  985. 11, he goes

  986. on to provide a

  987. very stern

  988. warning of

  989. imminent judgment.

  990. The axe is at

  991. the root of

  992. the tree.

  993. God is lining

  994. it up to cut

  995. it down.

  996. If you don't

  997. repent, it's

  998. going to be cut

  999. down and thrown

  1000. into the fire.

  1001. It's a reference

  1002. to hell.

  1003. Strong, strong

  1004. words.

  1005. Strong, strong

  1006. words.

  1007. Presumption comes

  1008. with serious

  1009. consequences.

  1010. So in this

  1011. section, we see

  1012. John the Baptist

  1013. calling these

  1014. people snakes,

  1015. saying you are

  1016. presuming you're

  1017. saved when you're

  1018. not, and then

  1019. warning them of

  1020. the judgment and

  1021. impending punishment

  1022. to gum.

  1023. Judgment is real.

  1024. The stakes are

  1025. high.

  1026. And so we have

  1027. a confrontation

  1028. of presumption.

  1029. He's preparing

  1030. the way.

  1031. The last scene

  1032. is in verses

  1033. 11 and 12.

  1034. John continues

  1035. to prepare the

  1036. way, and now

  1037. he moves from

  1038. a call to

  1039. repentance, a

  1040. confrontation of

  1041. presumption, and

  1042. now he moves to

  1043. pointing to the

  1044. one mightier

  1045. than him.

  1046. pointing to the

  1047. one who

  1048. follows, preparing

  1049. us for Jesus.

  1050. When we repent,

  1051. we're called to

  1052. turn from sin and

  1053. turn to God, and

  1054. John the Baptist

  1055. has called us from

  1056. sin, from

  1057. presumption, and

  1058. he's now going to

  1059. aim us at Jesus.

  1060. And he does so

  1061. with a few

  1062. contrasts.

  1063. The first

  1064. contrast is

  1065. this.

  1066. It's between

  1067. John himself,

  1068. and the coming

  1069. one.

  1070. He says in

  1071. verse 11, I

  1072. baptize you with

  1073. water for

  1074. repentance, but

  1075. he who is

  1076. coming after me

  1077. is mightier

  1078. than I.

  1079. John is

  1080. recognizing this

  1081. one coming

  1082. after him is

  1083. mightier than

  1084. I.

  1085. of course he's

  1086. talking about

  1087. Jesus.

  1088. Jesus comes on

  1089. the scene,

  1090. verse 13,

  1091. he's preparing

  1092. the way.

  1093. I need to

  1094. make a

  1095. connection for

  1096. you.

  1097. It's a

  1098. Christological

  1099. connection.

  1100. It's about

  1101. Jesus.

  1102. Would you

  1103. look back up

  1104. to verse 3?

  1105. That's where

  1106. John the Baptist

  1107. is, Matthew's

  1108. saying John the

  1109. Baptist fulfills

  1110. Isaiah 43.

  1111. He is the

  1112. voice of one

  1113. crying in the

  1114. wilderness.

  1115. And then it

  1116. goes on to say

  1117. prepare the way

  1118. of the Lord.

  1119. The Lord,

  1120. in Isaiah 43,

  1121. is a reference

  1122. to God

  1123. himself,

  1124. Yahweh.

  1125. This prophet

  1126. in the wilderness,

  1127. this voice,

  1128. is preparing

  1129. for God's

  1130. coming.

  1131. Do you know

  1132. what that means?

  1133. If we were to

  1134. run the logic

  1135. through rightly?

  1136. What Matthew

  1137. is saying is

  1138. this,

  1139. John the Baptist

  1140. is the voice

  1141. in the wilderness.

  1142. Jesus is the

  1143. God,

  1144. is God who

  1145. has come.

  1146. He's Emmanuel,

  1147. God with us.

  1148. And so the

  1149. connection you need

  1150. to see here is

  1151. John the Baptist

  1152. is preparing the

  1153. way for God

  1154. himself who's

  1155. come,

  1156. setting up

  1157. kingdom,

  1158. setting up his

  1159. reign.

  1160. It's subtle

  1161. but powerful.

  1162. Matthew is saying

  1163. that Jesus

  1164. is our Emmanuel

  1165. and that the

  1166. reign of Jesus

  1167. is the reign

  1168. of God

  1169. in our midst.

  1170. That's why

  1171. John is saying

  1172. the one coming

  1173. after him

  1174. is mightier

  1175. than I.

  1176. It's God.

  1177. God in the

  1178. flesh,

  1179. Emmanuel.

  1180. And what we're

  1181. going to see

  1182. throughout the

  1183. Gospel of Matthew

  1184. is that Jesus

  1185. does something

  1186. that only God

  1187. in the flesh

  1188. can do.

  1189. He forgives sin,

  1190. he raises the

  1191. dead,

  1192. he casts out

  1193. demons,

  1194. he speaks

  1195. authoritatively

  1196. like God

  1197. speaking because

  1198. he's God

  1199. in the flesh.

  1200. I can't wait

  1201. to get to the

  1202. Sermon on the

  1203. Mount.

  1204. Jesus is like,

  1205. let me clarify

  1206. some things for

  1207. you because I'm

  1208. God.

  1209. And so the

  1210. contrast is the

  1211. one mightier

  1212. than I and

  1213. then John,

  1214. look what he

  1215. says about

  1216. himself.

  1217. In verse

  1218. 11,

  1219. he's mightier

  1220. than I

  1221. whose sandals

  1222. I'm not

  1223. worthy to

  1224. carry.

  1225. The lowliest

  1226. of all

  1227. servants in

  1228. this culture

  1229. had to deal

  1230. with feet.

  1231. It was the

  1232. nastiest job.

  1233. Sandals,

  1234. dust,

  1235. gross

  1236. stuff.

  1237. It was left

  1238. for the lowliest

  1239. of servants.

  1240. And what John

  1241. is saying is

  1242. I'm unworthy.

  1243. I'm unworthy

  1244. to even carry

  1245. his sandals.

  1246. You see the

  1247. contrast?

  1248. The one

  1249. mightier than I,

  1250. Jesus,

  1251. Emmanuel,

  1252. God in the

  1253. flesh,

  1254. and John,

  1255. an unworthy

  1256. servant.

  1257. It points to

  1258. Jesus,

  1259. how awesome

  1260. he is,

  1261. how glorious

  1262. he is.

  1263. The second

  1264. contrast that

  1265. comes out in

  1266. this little

  1267. section is

  1268. the contrast

  1269. of baptisms.

  1270. John,

  1271. baptism is a

  1272. baptism of

  1273. water,

  1274. and the

  1275. baptism that

  1276. Jesus will

  1277. bring is a

  1278. baptism of

  1279. the Holy Spirit

  1280. and fire.

  1281. With the

  1282. coming of

  1283. Jesus,

  1284. he brings

  1285. with him

  1286. the messianic

  1287. age,

  1288. a new age

  1289. for God's

  1290. people,

  1291. a new way

  1292. of relating

  1293. to God.

  1294. It's the

  1295. fulfillment of

  1296. what was

  1297. predicted in

  1298. Ezekiel 36

  1299. and Joel

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  1300. chapter 2,

  1301. a new era

  1302. in which God

  1303. will dwell

  1304. within his

  1305. people by

  1306. his Spirit

  1307. in order to

  1308. enliven them

  1309. and empower

  1310. them to live

  1311. for God.

  1312. The Spirit of

  1313. God makes

  1314. us new.

  1315. He gives us

  1316. new hearts,

  1317. Ezekiel 36.

  1318. The Holy Spirit

  1319. enlivens and

  1320. empowers Christians

  1321. to live obediently

  1322. under the reign

  1323. of King Jesus.

  1324. John says,

  1325. I baptize you

  1326. with water for

  1327. repentance,

  1328. but he is

  1329. coming after me,

  1330. the one mightier

  1331. than me,

  1332. whose sandals

  1333. I'm not worthy

  1334. to carry.

  1335. He's going to

  1336. baptize you

  1337. with the Holy

  1338. Spirit and

  1339. with fire.

  1340. Very different

  1341. ministry,

  1342. folks.

  1343. John is

  1344. basically saying,

  1345. hey, I'm

  1346. calling you to

  1347. repent of your

  1348. sin and I

  1349. baptize you as

  1350. a sign of your

  1351. repentance, but

  1352. the one who's

  1353. coming after me,

  1354. he's going to

  1355. pour out his

  1356. Spirit on you.

  1357. And he's going

  1358. to pour out his

  1359. Spirit upon his

  1360. people in a new

  1361. and glorious way

  1362. so that they can

  1363. walk in obedience

  1364. to him.

  1365. Acts 2,

  1366. Pentecost,

  1367. the Spirit pours

  1368. out on the early

  1369. church.

  1370. It's a game

  1371. changer.

  1372. The fulfillment

  1373. of Joel 2,

  1374. the indwelling,

  1375. the enlivening,

  1376. empowering,

  1377. pouring out of

  1378. the Spirit of

  1379. God.

  1380. Inaugurating a

  1381. new life,

  1382. a new day.

  1383. And so the

  1384. contrast is

  1385. between this

  1386. baptism of

  1387. water that

  1388. leads to

  1389. repentance

  1390. and the

  1391. baptism of

  1392. the Holy

  1393. Spirit,

  1394. this outpouring

  1395. of the Spirit

  1396. of God that

  1397. radically changes

  1398. people.

  1399. It makes them

  1400. new people.

  1401. There's that

  1402. little reference

  1403. to fire,

  1404. baptized with the

  1405. Holy Spirit

  1406. and fire.

  1407. It's most likely

  1408. a reference to

  1409. the purifying

  1410. work of the

  1411. Spirit in the

  1412. life of the

  1413. believer from

  1414. start to

  1415. finish.

  1416. church.

  1417. It's a

  1418. different baptism,

  1419. different pouring

  1420. out, a

  1421. powerful pouring

  1422. out.

  1423. The last

  1424. contrast is

  1425. Jesus as

  1426. judge.

  1427. It's in

  1428. verse 12.

  1429. Again, John

  1430. the Baptist is

  1431. pointing us to

  1432. this one

  1433. mightier than

  1434. I.

  1435. He's God.

  1436. He's going to

  1437. pour out his

  1438. Spirit on his

  1439. people in a

  1440. very unique and

  1441. powerful way.

  1442. In verse 12

  1443. he says

  1444. essentially,

  1445. he's the

  1446. coming judge.

  1447. His winnowing

  1448. fork is in

  1449. his hand and

  1450. he will clear

  1451. his threshing

  1452. floor and

  1453. gather his

  1454. wheat into

  1455. the barn,

  1456. but the

  1457. chaff he

  1458. will burn

  1459. with unquenchable

  1460. fire.

  1461. It's an

  1462. agricultural

  1463. picture that

  1464. everybody would

  1465. have been

  1466. aware of.

  1467. It's a

  1468. separating out

  1469. the wheat

  1470. from the

  1471. chaff.

  1472. It's a

  1473. picture of

  1474. judgment.

  1475. It's a

  1476. picture of

  1477. separation.

  1478. And it's a

  1479. picture of

  1480. punishment.

  1481. What I want

  1482. you to

  1483. notice here

  1484. is the

  1485. word

  1486. his.

  1487. His

  1488. winnowing

  1489. fork is

  1490. in his

  1491. hand and

  1492. he will

  1493. clear his

  1494. threshing

  1495. floor and

  1496. gather his

  1497. wheat into

  1498. the barn.

  1499. It's his

  1500. harvest.

  1501. He's the

  1502. Lord of the

  1503. harvest.

  1504. Jesus comes

  1505. and he's

  1506. establishing his

  1507. kingdom and

  1508. he's going to

  1509. separate the

  1510. wheat from

  1511. the chaff.

  1512. The contrast

  1513. emphasizes that

  1514. Jesus, this

  1515. one mightier

  1516. than I, he's

  1517. the judge who's

  1518. come.

  1519. And so be

  1520. warned.

  1521. Be warned.

  1522. There's another

  1523. reference to the

  1524. unquenchable fire.

  1525. The chaff will be

  1526. thrown into the

  1527. unquenchable fire.

  1528. The unrepentant

  1529. will be thrown

  1530. into the

  1531. unquenchable fire.

  1532. It's a reference

  1533. to hell.

  1534. The stakes are

  1535. high.

  1536. And it all

  1537. has to do

  1538. with your

  1539. relationship to

  1540. Jesus.

  1541. Jesus.

  1542. So this

  1543. coming one

  1544. is God,

  1545. Emmanuel.

  1546. He ushers in

  1547. the life and

  1548. the spirit.

  1549. He's the

  1550. judge who's

  1551. going to

  1552. separate the

  1553. wheat from

  1554. the chaff.

  1555. John the

  1556. Baptist is

  1557. pointing us

  1558. to the only

  1559. one who can

  1560. save us.

  1561. Jesus.

  1562. So here we

  1563. are looking at

  1564. some things that

  1565. happened two

  1566. millennia ago and

  1567. John the Baptist

  1568. is still preaching

  1569. today.

  1570. He's still calling

  1571. us to respond to

  1572. King Jesus.

  1573. And I just want

  1574. to point to you

  1575. four areas of

  1576. how we respond.

  1577. Repent of your

  1578. sins.

  1579. Turn away from

  1580. a life lived

  1581. opposed to God.

  1582. Your sin is

  1583. real and it's

  1584. against a real

  1585. God.

  1586. And let me just

  1587. urge you not

  1588. just to turn from

  1589. some of your

  1590. sins.

  1591. Turn from all of

  1592. your sins.

  1593. Turn from a

  1594. life lived for

  1595. yourself and turn

  1596. to the giver of

  1597. life, the one

  1598. mightier than you,

  1599. the one and

  1600. only one who can

  1601. save you.

  1602. Jesus.

  1603. So repent.

  1604. Confess your

  1605. sins to God.

  1606. experience forgiveness

  1607. that's only found in

  1608. him.

  1609. Second thing is

  1610. don't presume.

  1611. Presumption will

  1612. always minimize

  1613. sin.

  1614. And when sin is

  1615. minimized, there's

  1616. really not much

  1617. need to repent of

  1618. anything.

  1619. Okay.

  1620. Presumption keeps

  1621. a sinner from

  1622. thinking that they

  1623. are in desperate

  1624. need of a Savior.

  1625. you.

  1626. So don't presume.

  1627. If you're taking

  1628. notes, write down

  1629. Luke 18, 9-14.

  1630. Jesus tells a

  1631. parable.

  1632. Parable between

  1633. a presumptuous

  1634. Pharisee and a

  1635. sinful tax

  1636. collector.

  1637. Let me just

  1638. commend you to you

  1639. to read.

  1640. Don't presume.

  1641. Ask God to show

  1642. you your sin.

  1643. Help Him to see

  1644. your need for a

  1645. Savior.

  1646. Don't presume.

  1647. Third, trust in

  1648. Jesus.

  1649. He's God in the

  1650. flesh.

  1651. He pours out the

  1652. Spirit.

  1653. He's the judge.

  1654. He alone is the

  1655. one you can trust.

  1656. He is able to

  1657. save you.

  1658. He's able to

  1659. bring children of

  1660. Abraham out of

  1661. lifeless stones.

  1662. He's able to

  1663. change your

  1664. stony heart

  1665. into a heart

  1666. that believes.

  1667. He's the only

  1668. one that can do

  1669. that.

  1670. This is what's

  1671. amazing about

  1672. Jesus.

  1673. He already knows

  1674. you can't save

  1675. yourself.

  1676. He already knows

  1677. that.

  1678. And so that's

  1679. why He came.

  1680. He came to

  1681. give Himself

  1682. as a ransom

  1683. for many.

  1684. He's the one

  1685. mightier than I.

  1686. He's the one

  1687. mightier than you.

  1688. He's the only one

  1689. that can rescue you

  1690. from your sin.

  1691. So trust Him.

  1692. Cry out to Him.

  1693. Confess your sins

  1694. to Him.

  1695. He is glad to

  1696. forgive you based

  1697. on the shedding

  1698. of His blood.

  1699. The last thing is

  1700. serve the King.

  1701. When you're brought

  1702. into the Kingdom

  1703. of Heaven, you come

  1704. under the act of

  1705. reign of Jesus,

  1706. you realize how

  1707. unworthy you are.

  1708. I didn't deserve

  1709. this.

  1710. There's nothing

  1711. I can bring to

  1712. the table.

  1713. There's nothing

  1714. I can really give

  1715. Him and impress

  1716. Him with.

  1717. It's all about

  1718. Him.

  1719. It's all about

  1720. His power.

  1721. It's all about

  1722. His glory.

  1723. It's all about

  1724. His purposes.

  1725. I'm just happy

  1726. to be here.

  1727. So you start

  1728. to realize how

  1729. unworthy you are.

  1730. And you start

  1731. to realize,

  1732. I'm unworthy

  1733. to carry His

  1734. sandals.

  1735. He is so

  1736. glorious.

  1737. glorious.

  1738. But we serve

  1739. Him with

  1740. gladness.

  1741. We serve Him

  1742. with the joy

  1743. of salvation.

  1744. Because we know

  1745. it is only by

  1746. His grace that

  1747. we've been saved.

  1748. It's His kindness

  1749. to us to include

  1750. us in the Kingdom.

  1751. And so we serve

  1752. Him with gladness.

  1753. So whatever

  1754. Jesus has called

  1755. you to do,

  1756. serve Him

  1757. with gladness.

  1758. We're all

  1759. unworthy servants.

  1760. We're all saved

  1761. by grace.

  1762. He is worthy.

  1763. If you want a

  1764. place to serve,

  1765. come to the

  1766. ministry fair,

  1767. January 31st.

  1768. Find a place

  1769. where you can

  1770. leverage your gift

  1771. for the glory

  1772. of Jesus.

  1773. John the Baptist

  1774. is still speaking

  1775. today.

  1776. Still preparing

  1777. the way of

  1778. King Jesus.

  1779. Let's respond

  1780. in humility.

  1781. Let's pray.

  1782. Jesus,

  1783. You are the one

  1784. mightier than I,

  1785. mightier than us.

  1786. It's about Your reign

  1787. and Your kingdom.

  1788. God, would You

  1789. have Your way

  1790. in our lives?

  1791. Would You save

  1792. this morning?

  1793. We pray this

  1794. in Jesus' name.

  1795. Amen.
