  1. If you'd open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 4, verse 1 through 11,

    Matthew 4:1–11

  2. we're going to be looking at the temptation of Jesus this morning.

  3. Last week, we looked at the baptism of Jesus, and it was His inauguration day.

  4. Do you remember the words?

  5. It kind of climaxed in chapter 3, verse 17, where God says of His Son,

  6. This is My beloved Son with whom I'm well pleased.

  7. He made a declaration, an announcement.

  8. And in that statement, this is My beloved Son with whom I'm well pleased,

  9. God the Father, there were choice words.

  10. He's drawing on Psalm 2, this is the Messiah, this is My Son, He's going to inherit the nations.

  11. And He's also drawing on Isaiah 42, the suffering servant with whom I'm well pleased.

  12. This Messiah is going to suffer.

  13. He's going to establish His reign through suffering.

  14. And so what we're going to see this morning is this.

  15. We're going to go from the inauguration day to the proving day.

  16. Jesus is inaugurated as King, and then what we're going to see is Jesus' medal is proven through the temptation.

  17. Imagine this.

  18. This is just make-believe.

  19. I don't think this really happened, but just pretend with me.

  20. God the Father in heaven says, this is My beloved Son with whom I'm well pleased.

  21. Public announcement.

  22. Up in heaven.

  23. Bling, bling, bling.

  24. Bling, bling, bling.

  25. Bling, bling, bling.

  26. Little telephone call in heaven.

  27. God the Father picks up.

  28. Yes?

  29. It's Satan?

  30. I just heard the announcement.

  31. Yes?

  32. I meant it for all to hear.

  33. Yes?

  34. Now, I've heard that He is well-pleasing to you.

  35. Why don't you send Him my way?

  36. Let me put Him to the test.

  37. Let's see what He's got.

  38. You know what God the Father would say at that point?

  39. It's in the plan.

  40. I've already sent Him.

  41. He's being led by the Spirit right now into the wilderness.

  42. And by the way, He's my beloved Son.

  43. I think you've got more on your hands than what you realize.

  44. Click.

  45. This morning, what I want you to see is this.

  46. What the temptation of Jesus shows is that Jesus is trusting and obeying of His Father all the way through.

  47. He trusts and obeys His Father all the way through each temptation.

  48. He submits Himself to the will of the Father.

  49. He trusts and obeys.

  50. And by doing so, He proves what God the Father has just said.

  51. This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.

  52. So there are really kind of three stages in this passage.

  53. Verses 1 and 2.

  54. It's the preparation.

  55. Jesus shows up in the wilderness.

  56. And then there's 3 through 10 where we're going to see kind of three rounds between heavyweights.

  57. The devil and Jesus the Son.

  58. I'll tell you right now, Jesus wins.

  59. And then, verse 11, the triumph.

  60. The aftermath.

  61. We'll be spending most of our time on 3 through 10.

  62. But let's look at this preparation to begin with.

  63. It's a preparation of extremes.

  64. Verses 1 and 2.

  65. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

  66. And after fasting 40 days and 40 nights, He was hungry.

  67. Maybe one of the most extreme understatements in the Bible.

  68. But there may be more going on there than meets the eye.

  69. We've got some extremes.

  70. Extreme landscape.

  71. The wilderness.

  72. It was a deserted place.

  73. A lonely place.

  74. Extreme wilderness.

  75. Extreme landscape.

  76. We've got extreme hunger going on here.

  77. Jesus has been fasting 40 days and 40 nights.

  78. And we all know that kind of 40 days without food is kind of the maximum a human being can go without dying.

  79. So Jesus is at the extreme of His life, humanly speaking.

  80. He's been fasting.

  81. He's been fasting.

  82. Which means this.

  83. He's just not going without food, going without food.

  84. He's going without food in order to prepare Himself for something.

  85. He was extremely hungry.

  86. But when we get into the temptations, we're going to come back to this.

  87. Because we've got to ask, what was He really hungry for?

  88. Extreme isolation.

  89. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, yes.

  90. But He alone faced the devil.

  91. Now, I'm going to just be honest with you.

  92. I can't imagine going 40 days without food.

  93. It's hard to imagine going 40 minutes without food, just to be honest with you.

  94. And if I was in an extreme landscape with extreme hunger facing an extreme opponent like the devil,

  95. I'd fold like a cheap suit.

  96. I think we all would.

  97. Speaking of this extreme opponent,

  98. he was led out to be tempted by the devil.

  99. We were singing a song here.

  100. Thank you, Ben and Lindsay.

  101. What a sweet song.

  102. Our enemy meant for evil.

  103. God meant for good.

  104. Jesus is led out to the wilderness.

  105. The devil wants evil.

  106. God wants good.

  107. And so He's led out to the devil.

  108. And the devil goes by a lot of different handles.

  109. In the Bible, ruler of this world, John 12.

  110. Prince of the power of the air, Ephesians 2.

  111. The God of this world, 2 Corinthians 4.

  112. The serpent of old, the deceiver of the world, Revelation 12.

  113. The destroyer, Abaddon, Apollyon.

  114. The accuser, the slanderer, the tempter.

  115. Head to head.

  116. Extreme opponent.

  117. There's extreme stakes.

  118. Will Jesus, when facing all these extremes,

  119. will Jesus prove Himself as the Son of God,

  120. faithful to His Father,

  121. or will He be disqualified?

  122. Will He yield to the devil's temptations

  123. and not just Himself be disqualified,

  124. but throw God's plan of salvation into the garbage can?

  125. The stakes are high.

  126. A lot of extremes going on here,

  127. but there's one other extreme I want you to see.

  128. There's extreme fulfillment going on here.

  129. When you hear the word wilderness,

  130. when you read the word 40,

  131. when you read the words hunger,

  132. when you hear the words sun,

  133. you need to be realizing

  134. that Jesus is experiencing here

  135. something that parallels

  136. what Israel experienced in the wilderness.

  137. Very intentional.

  138. Remember, Israel spent 40 years in the wilderness,

  139. wandering the wilderness.

  140. And we see in Deuteronomy 6, 7, and 8,

  141. right before they enter Canaan,

  142. the promised land,

  143. God through Moses addresses them.

  144. And so what we see here

  145. in the temptation of Jesus

  146. is when He says it is written,

  147. He is quoting from Deuteronomy 8

  148. and Deuteronomy 6.

  149. Parallel.

  150. What you also need to know

  151. is that in Deuteronomy 8,

  152. Israel is likened to being God.

  153. God's son.

  154. God led His people, Israel,

  155. His son,

  156. into the wilderness

  157. to test them,

  158. quote unquote,

  159. to know what was in your heart,

  160. whether you would keep

  161. God's commandments or not.

  162. So God leads His people,

  163. His son, Israel,

  164. through the wilderness

  165. to prepare them for entering Canaan.

  166. And we all know

  167. they failed miserably.

  168. They're a bunch of complainers.

  169. stiff-necked,

  170. made it hard.

  171. God was merciful, though.

  172. God leads His son, Jesus,

  173. into the wilderness

  174. to prepare Him

  175. for His public ministry

  176. to prove

  177. that He is

  178. the true

  179. Son of God.

  180. to prove

  181. what was in His heart,

  182. to fully obey the Father,

  183. no matter what,

  184. to submit Himself

  185. gladly

  186. to His God.

  187. He did

  188. what Israel

  189. did not do.

  190. God has a purpose

  191. for leading His son

  192. into the wilderness.

  193. Jesus.

  194. Jesus is going to

  195. show Himself

  196. as the true

  197. Son of God.

  198. So there's

  199. extreme fulfillment.

  200. A lot of action

  201. going on here,

  202. isn't there?

  203. Matthew has this,

  204. like,

  205. if you, like,

  206. if you, like,

  207. cut Him,

  208. He'd bleed out

  209. like Old Testament.

  210. He's just,

  211. He's just,

  212. got Old Testament

  213. all over the place.

  214. Okay,

  215. so verses 1 and 2,

  216. our King

  217. is being put

  218. to a very

  219. extreme test.

  220. If any of us

  221. were in that situation,

  222. we'd fold,

  223. like,

  224. cheap suits.

  225. You've got to understand

  226. we've got extremes

  227. going on here.

  228. And He's going to

  229. prove Himself

  230. to be faithful.

  231. He's going to,

  232. this is saying

  233. He's ready

  234. for ministry.

  235. Stage 2,

  236. the Son

  237. is tempted.

  238. In verses 3 through 10,

  239. the devil seeks

  240. to disqualify.

  241. Jesus

  242. and undermine

  243. God's plan

  244. of salvation

  245. with three temptations.

  246. Now,

  247. has anybody seen

  248. a boxing match

  249. before?

  250. There are these

  251. things called

  252. rounds,

  253. and so

  254. they come out,

  255. the fighters fight

  256. for a round,

  257. they go back

  258. to their corners,

  259. and they come back

  260. for another round.

  261. And so imagine

  262. the temptation

  263. as three rounds.

  264. Who's going to win?

  265. Let's look at round

  266. one.

  267. The first temptation

  268. of Jesus.

  269. And the tempter,

  270. this is verse 3,

  271. and the tempter

  272. came and said

  273. to Him,

  274. Jesus,

  275. if You are

  276. the Son of God,

  277. command these stones

  278. to become loaves

  279. of bread.

  280. So here's the setting.

  281. We're in the wilderness,

  282. dry,

  283. barren,

  284. and it lacks

  285. a lot of stuff,

  286. but what it doesn't

  287. lack is stones.

  288. And Satan knows

  289. that Jesus is

  290. quote unquote

  291. hungry.

  292. And so in verse 3,

  293. I hope you notice

  294. how the devil

  295. kind of moves

  296. into this temptation.

  297. If you are

  298. the Son of God,

  299. command these stones

  300. to become loaves

  301. of bread.

  302. If you are

  303. the Son of God,

  304. if you are

  305. the Son of God,

  306. what you need

  307. to realize

  308. is that the devil

  309. is not questioning

  310. Jesus' sonship.

  311. What the devil

  312. is doing

  313. is tempting him

  314. to use his sonship

  315. in a way

  316. that would

  317. cause him

  318. to disobey

  319. his father,

  320. to cause him

  321. to move independently.

  322. It's kind of like this.

  323. Jesus,

  324. I got the memo.

  325. I heard the whole thing.

  326. You're his beloved son

  327. in whom his soul delights.

  328. I get it.

  329. I get it.

  330. Well, since you are

  331. the Son of God,

  332. Jesus,

  333. since you're the Messiah,

  334. God in the flesh,

  335. you've got all the power

  336. to create out of nothing,

  337. since you're that,

  338. why don't you just use

  339. your Son of God power

  340. to feed yourself?

  341. Why don't you fill

  342. your little tummy?

  343. I know you're hungry.

  344. What the devil

  345. is tempting Jesus

  346. to do

  347. is to misuse

  348. his power

  349. as the Son of God.

  350. To use his power

  351. not for the advancement

  352. of his Father's will,

  353. but to satisfy

  354. himself,

  355. personal gratification.

  356. And you might be sitting

  357. in your pew right now

  358. saying,

  359. what's wrong with that?

  360. I mean, seriously,

  361. he's got all the power

  362. he wants to.

  363. If he's hungry,

  364. we could just make

  365. some bread out of stones.

  366. What's the big deal

  367. about that?

  368. Well, the big deal

  369. about it is

  370. he can't do

  371. whatever he wants.

  372. He is submitted himself,

  373. Jesus,

  374. to the will of his Father.

  375. He is the divine Son

  376. sent to accomplish

  377. the Father's purposes.

  378. And so let's look

  379. at how Jesus responds

  380. to this temptation.

  381. Chapter 4, verse 4.

  382. But Jesus answered,

  383. it is written.

  384. It is written.

  385. Look at 4.4,

  386. it is written.

  387. Look at 4.7,

  388. again, it is written.

  389. Now look at verse 10.

  390. For it is written.

  391. Jesus resists

  392. by quoting the Bible.

  393. Jesus resists

  394. by reciting God's Word.

  395. Jesus is saying,

  396. hey, I'm not going to trust

  397. your Word,

  398. you fork-tongue liar,

  399. but I'm going to stand

  400. on what God has said.

  401. I'm going to trust

  402. and obey.

  403. As the Son of God,

  404. I'm going to trust

  405. my Father.

  406. Man shall not live

  407. by bread alone,

  408. but by every word

  409. that comes

  410. from the mouth

  411. of God.

  412. What's he hungry for?

  413. What's Jesus

  414. really hungry for?

  415. He fasted 40 days

  416. and 40 nights.

  417. He was hungry.

  418. We immediately

  419. interpret that as,

  420. oh, he is just

  421. looking for a snack.

  422. Could it be

  423. that he's hungry

  424. to accomplish

  425. the Father's will?

  426. He's more hungry

  427. to obey his Father

  428. than to fill his belly

  429. even though he could.

  430. He submits his power

  431. to the Father's purposes.

  432. And he quotes

  433. Deuteronomy 8.3.

  434. It's a reference

  435. to when Israel

  436. was in the wilderness

  437. and without food.

  438. God put them there

  439. intentionally

  440. to test them,

  441. to see what they would do

  442. and to show them

  443. what he can do.

  444. He can provide

  445. for their most basic needs

  446. on a daily basis.

  447. So he sends Israel

  448. daily supplies

  449. of this stuff

  450. called manna,

  451. this heavenly bread,

  452. to teach his son Israel

  453. that God,

  454. their father,

  455. is able and willing

  456. to meet their everyday needs.

  457. All they needed

  458. to trust his word

  459. to believe what he said.

  460. And you know

  461. what God does?

  462. He provides for them

  463. daily for 40 years

  464. while they're

  465. in the wilderness.

  466. 40 years,

  467. day after day,

  468. manna on the ground.

  469. All they need,

  470. he provides for them.

  471. 40 years of manna

  472. just like he said

  473. he would do.

  474. 40 years of God's

  475. faithfulness

  476. to his own word.

  477. By quoting

  478. Deuteronomy 8.3,

  479. Jesus is saying,

  480. Satan,

  481. I'm going to trust

  482. and obey

  483. my father's word.

  484. He has me here.

  485. I've been fasting.

  486. I am going to trust

  487. that he will provide

  488. for me.

  489. I'm not going to provide

  490. for myself

  491. even though I can.

  492. I'm going to submit

  493. myself to him.

  494. I'm going to trust

  495. his timing

  496. to when I'm going

  497. to eat next.

  498. but my appetite

  499. is to do

  500. the will

  501. of my father

  502. and even if that

  503. means I just

  504. got to put

  505. my own power

  506. under his will.

  507. The son submits

  508. to the father

  509. proving to be

  510. the true son

  511. and he wins

  512. the first round.

  513. Second round.

  514. temptation number

  515. two,

  516. verses five

  517. through seven.

  518. The setting

  519. from the stones

  520. in the wilderness

  521. the devil takes

  522. Jesus to the

  523. highest point

  524. of the temple

  525. in Jerusalem.

  526. You see that

  527. in verse five.

  528. Now whether this

  529. is a real

  530. actual physical

  531. taking Jesus

  532. to the temple

  533. or this is some

  534. kind of vision,

  535. it's not clear

  536. but what is clear

  537. is that the

  538. temptation is real.

  539. And we read

  540. the temptation

  541. in verse six.

  542. If you are the

  543. son of God

  544. throw yourself

  545. down.

  546. Again,

  547. the devil

  548. is trying to

  549. play on the

  550. son of God

  551. thing that God

  552. has already

  553. announced.

  554. If you are the

  555. son of God

  556. he's seeking

  557. to cause Jesus

  558. to misuse

  559. his sonship.

  560. He wants to

  561. disqualify Jesus

  562. and undermine

  563. our salvation.

  564. the temptation

  565. is Jesus

  566. throw yourself

  567. down.

  568. They are like

  569. three hundred

  570. feet above

  571. a valley

  572. on the temple.

  573. He said

  574. throw yourself

  575. down from

  576. his height.

  577. He is saying

  578. willingly,

  579. Jesus will you

  580. willingly put

  581. yourself in

  582. harm's way

  583. Jesus.

  584. Let's see what

  585. God does.

  586. Let's see what

  587. your father does.

  588. Now,

  589. the devil is

  590. pretty slick.

  591. because

  592. the reason

  593. he gives,

  594. he quotes

  595. the Bible.

  596. There's one

  597. other it is

  598. written in

  599. this passage.

  600. It comes

  601. from the lips

  602. of the devil.

  603. Throw

  604. yourself down,

  605. son of God,

  606. for it is

  607. written,

  608. he will command

  609. his angels

  610. concerning you.

  611. On their

  612. hands they

  613. will bear

  614. you up,

  615. lest you

  616. strike your

  617. foot against

  618. toes.

  619. You won't

  620. even step

  621. your toe.

  622. It is

  623. written very

  624. slick.

  625. Very slick.

  626. Evidently,

  627. the devil knows

  628. the Bible.

  629. He's lousy

  630. at applying

  631. it, but he

  632. knows it.

  633. Not even

  634. lousy.

  635. He intentionally

  636. misapplies it.

  637. Now,

  638. remember what

  639. just happened.

  640. This is

  641. instructive.

  642. Jesus just

  643. resisted the

  644. devil by saying,

  645. hey, I live

  646. by every word

  647. that proceeds

  648. from the

  649. mouth of

  650. God.

  651. So,

  652. the devil

  653. says,

  654. oh,

  655. oh,

  656. really?

  657. Well,

  658. how about

  659. this?

  660. Put this

  661. on for

  662. size,

  663. son of

  664. God.

  665. If you

  666. live by

  667. every word

  668. from the

  669. mouth of

  670. God,

  671. how about

  672. you live

  673. by this?

  674. Psalm 91,

  675. 11,

  676. and 12.

  677. How about

  678. this,

  679. Jesus?

  680. Let's go up

  681. on the

  682. temple,

  683. let's throw

  684. yourself down,

  685. and let's

  686. see you live

  687. by Psalm 91,

  688. 11,

  689. and 12.

  690. Throw

  691. yourself down,

  692. and as you're

  693. falling,

  694. let's see if

  695. God the

  696. Father commands

  697. his angels to

  698. come,

  699. gather you

  700. with their

  701. hands,

  702. and protect

  703. you from

  704. falling and

  705. smashing.

  706. Jesus,

  707. put your

  708. money where

  709. your mouth

  710. is.

  711. You see

  712. what the

  713. devil is

  714. doing?

  715. He's saying,

  716. prove it,

  717. Jesus.

  718. If you're the

  719. son of God,

  720. live by

  721. God's word.

  722. God's word.

  723. And what the

  724. devil is doing

  725. is he's trying

  726. to corner

  727. Jesus with

  728. God's word.

  729. It's a

  730. misapplication

  731. of the

  732. Bible.

  733. He's trying

  734. to use

  735. God's word

  736. to disqualify

  737. Jesus,

  738. to trap

  739. him.

  740. Now,

  741. just to

  742. remind you,

  743. the devil

  744. has been

  745. distorting

  746. God's word

  747. from the

  748. very beginning.

  749. You remember

  750. this?

  751. To Eve?

  752. Did God

  753. actually say

  754. you shall

  755. can't eat

  756. of any

  757. tree from

  758. the garden?

  759. Did God

  760. really say

  761. that to Eve?

  762. Puts a little

  763. doubt in her

  764. head.

  765. And then

  766. remember this

  767. one?

  768. This is also

  769. Genesis 3.

  770. Eve,

  771. you shall

  772. not surely

  773. die.

  774. If you eat

  775. that,

  776. eat from

  777. that tree,

  778. you won't

  779. die.

  780. God's just

  781. being dramatic.

  782. It's a

  783. clear distortion

  784. of God's

  785. word.

  786. The devil

  787. has been

  788. distorting

  789. and misusing

  790. God's word

  791. from the

  792. very beginning.

  793. He is the

  794. father of

  795. lies.

  796. And so

  797. though Psalm

  798. 91 does

  799. promise safety

  800. to those

  801. who trust

  802. God,

  803. the devil

  804. is intentionally

  805. misapplying

  806. it.

  807. Nowhere in

  808. Psalm 91

  809. is the

  810. believer told

  811. to intentionally

  812. put themselves

  813. in harm's

  814. way in order

  815. to obligate

  816. God to

  817. save them.

  818. There's no

  819. way in

  820. Psalm 91

  821. it says

  822. that.

  823. What we

  824. see in

  825. Psalm 91

  826. is a

  827. live by

  828. faith,

  829. a humble

  830. faith,

  831. trusting in

  832. your God

  833. and trust

  834. that he

  835. is going

  836. to keep

  837. you safe.

  838. what Satan

  839. is subtly

  840. doing is

  841. tempting

  842. Jesus,

  843. the son

  844. of God,

  845. the second

  846. person of

  847. the Trinity

  848. to elevate

  849. himself over

  850. the father,

  851. the first

  852. person of

  853. the Trinity

  854. to force

  855. the father

  856. to do

  857. the son's

  858. bidding.

  859. Satan is

  860. tempting

  861. Jesus through

  862. a misuse

  863. of Psalm

  864. 91 to

  865. force the

  866. father's

  867. hands and

  868. Jesus sees

  869. right through

  870. it.

  871. I know

  872. you.

  873. I know

  874. you from

  875. the very

  876. beginning.

  877. And Jesus'

  878. response in

  879. verse 7 of

  880. chapter 4 is

  881. this.

  882. Again, it

  883. is written.

  884. It is written.

  885. There it is.

  886. He's standing

  887. on the word

  888. of God.

  889. He uses

  890. God's word

  891. to correct

  892. a misuse

  893. of God's

  894. word.

  895. You shall

  896. not put the

  897. Lord your

  898. God to the

  899. test.

  900. I see what

  901. you're doing.

  902. You shall

  903. not put the

  904. Lord your

  905. God to the

  906. test.

  907. I'm not

  908. going to

  909. test him,

  910. devil.

  911. He's quoting

  912. Deuteronomy

  913. 6.16 which

  914. says in full,

  915. you shall not

  916. put the

  917. Lord your

  918. God to

  919. the test

  920. as you

  921. tested him

  922. at Massa.

  923. It's a

  924. reference to

  925. Exodus 17.

  926. Israel,

  927. again,

  928. is in the

  929. wilderness

  930. deprived of

  931. water and

  932. they start

  933. to complain.

  934. Wah,

  935. wah,

  936. wah.

  937. Where's

  938. the water?

  939. Moses,

  940. wah,

  941. where's the

  942. water?

  943. We're thirsty.

  944. Why'd you

  945. bring us

  946. out of

  947. Egypt?

  948. We're so

  949. thirsty.

  950. They have

  951. water there.

  952. Seriously,

  953. we're going to

  954. die.

  955. So thirsty.

  956. And they're

  957. complaining to

  958. Moses.

  959. And Moses

  960. responds to

  961. them,

  962. why are you

  963. complaining to

  964. me?

  965. Why are you

  966. testing the

  967. Lord?

  968. Why are you

  969. testing the Lord?

  970. And in

  971. chapter 17,

  972. verse 7,

  973. Moses sums

  974. it up by

  975. summarizing what

  976. Israel is

  977. saying is that

  978. they're asking,

  979. is the Lord

  980. among us or

  981. not?

  982. We're thirsty!

  983. Israel's

  984. testing of

  985. God was

  986. Israel's

  987. doubting of

  988. God.

  989. Satan was

  990. trying to

  991. lure Jesus

  992. into putting

  993. God to the

  994. test in

  995. order to

  996. prove Jesus

  997. is the

  998. Son of

  999. God.

  1000. And that

  1001. whole line

  1002. there actually

  1003. disproves,

  1004. disqualifies

  1005. Him.

  1006. But Jesus

  1007. knows better.

  1008. He's not

  1009. going to put

  1010. the Lord

  1011. His God

  1012. to the

  1013. test.

  1014. He's going

  1015. to be the

  1016. faithful son.

  1017. He's going

  1018. to trust

  1019. and obey.

  1020. He's going

  1021. to prove

  1022. His

  1023. sonship

  1024. to His

  1025. Father.

  1026. There's no

  1027. need for

  1028. any of

  1029. this stuff,

  1030. any of

  1031. this sensationalism.

  1032. He's not

  1033. going to

  1034. throw Himself

  1035. down from

  1036. the temple

  1037. because God's

  1038. not asking

  1039. Him to do

  1040. that.

  1041. In fact,

  1042. not yet.

  1043. Jesus will

  1044. one day

  1045. give His

  1046. life.

  1047. He will

  1048. voluntarily

  1049. put Himself

  1050. in harm's

  1051. way.

  1052. But that

  1053. comes later.

  1054. That comes

  1055. later.

  1056. In Golgotha,

  1057. in the cross,

  1058. the suffering

  1059. servant,

  1060. Isaiah 53,

  1061. Jesus becomes

  1062. sin for us.

  1063. He doesn't

  1064. put God

  1065. to the test.

  1066. He actually

  1067. submits Himself

  1068. to the will

  1069. of the Father.

  1070. Remember Gethsemane?

  1071. Not my will,

  1072. but your will

  1073. be done.

  1074. And

  1075. there it is.

  1076. Matthew 26.

  1077. Jesus submitting

  1078. Himself again

  1079. to the will

  1080. of the Father.

  1081. Jesus will

  1082. one time,

  1083. one day,

  1084. give His life

  1085. up,

  1086. not by throwing

  1087. it down from

  1088. the temple,

  1089. but by hanging

  1090. on a cursed

  1091. cross.

  1092. And in so

  1093. doing,

  1094. obey the

  1095. Father's will.

  1096. Jesus says,

  1097. I'm not buying

  1098. this stuff.

  1099. I'm not throwing

  1100. myself down.

  1101. I'm not putting

  1102. God to the test.

  1103. I'm going to

  1104. submit myself

  1105. to the will

  1106. of the Father

  1107. because I'm His

  1108. Son.

  1109. Jesus wins

  1110. round two.

  1111. Round three.

  1112. Verses eight

  1113. through ten.

  1114. The setting.

  1115. The devil

  1116. takes Him

  1117. to a very

  1118. high mountain.

  1119. You see this

  1120. in verse eight.

  1121. And shows Him

  1122. all the kingdoms

  1123. of the world

  1124. and their glory.

  1125. Now,

  1126. we all know

  1127. that there's not

  1128. one mountain

  1129. high enough

  1130. where we can

  1131. go to and

  1132. see all the

  1133. kingdoms of

  1134. the world

  1135. at once.

  1136. So mostly,

  1137. likely,

  1138. this is some

  1139. kind of a

  1140. vision.

  1141. But what

  1142. Satan is

  1143. doing is

  1144. trying to

  1145. shortcut

  1146. the Savior's

  1147. mission.

  1148. He's trying

  1149. to tempt

  1150. Him to

  1151. idolatry

  1152. and shortcut

  1153. the mission.

  1154. Now,

  1155. imagine this.

  1156. If this was

  1157. modern day,

  1158. times,

  1159. Satan showing

  1160. Jesus all

  1161. the metropolitan

  1162. areas of the

  1163. world in

  1164. their glories.

  1165. New York

  1166. City,

  1167. the Big

  1168. Apple.

  1169. Glories of

  1170. finance and

  1171. trade.

  1172. Sophisticated

  1173. people,

  1174. shows in

  1175. Paris,

  1176. the glories

  1177. of fine

  1178. food and

  1179. fashion.

  1180. the glories

  1181. of Geneva,

  1182. Switzerland,

  1183. glories of

  1184. international

  1185. finance and

  1186. banking.

  1187. You can have

  1188. that too.

  1189. The glories of

  1190. Washington,

  1191. D.C.,

  1192. Beijing,

  1193. Moscow,

  1194. the glories of

  1195. political force

  1196. and might.

  1197. You can have

  1198. that too.

  1199. You can have

  1200. that too.

  1201. You can have

  1202. all this,

  1203. Jesus,

  1204. if you would

  1205. just bow

  1206. down and

  1207. worship me.

  1208. You can have

  1209. all the kingdoms

  1210. of the world

  1211. and their

  1212. glories.

  1213. They can all

  1214. be yours

  1215. if you just

  1216. worship me.

  1217. We've got a

  1218. different tactic

  1219. going on here.

  1220. Do you notice

  1221. there's no

  1222. if you're

  1223. the son

  1224. of God?

  1225. He just,

  1226. all pretense

  1227. is gone,

  1228. out the

  1229. window.

  1230. It's like,

  1231. hey,

  1232. I'll give you

  1233. all this

  1234. stuff if

  1235. you'll just

  1236. worship me.

  1237. Why doesn't

  1238. Satan start

  1239. with if you're

  1240. the son

  1241. of God?

  1242. Maybe he's

  1243. realizing it's

  1244. working against

  1245. him.

  1246. Maybe he

  1247. realizes that,

  1248. hey,

  1249. the first two

  1250. rounds,

  1251. Jesus won

  1252. and that's

  1253. not working.

  1254. So let's

  1255. get rid of

  1256. all pretenses

  1257. and let's

  1258. get down

  1259. right to

  1260. it.

  1261. Jesus,

  1262. I'll give

  1263. you all

  1264. this stuff

  1265. if you'll

  1266. just

  1267. worship me.

  1268. And in

  1269. so doing,

  1270. in verse

  1271. nine,

  1272. we see

  1273. the vain

  1274. glorious

  1275. imposter

  1276. that Satan

  1277. is.

  1278. If you'll

  1279. fall down

  1280. and worship

  1281. me.

  1282. Let's just

  1283. think about

  1284. it this

  1285. way.

  1286. The devil

  1287. who's a

  1288. created

  1289. being

  1290. is tempting

  1291. the son

  1292. of God,

  1293. the eternal

  1294. son of

  1295. God,

  1296. second person

  1297. of the

  1298. trinity,

  1299. to worship

  1300. him,

  1301. a created

  1302. being.

  1303. This is

  1304. blatant

  1305. idolatry.

  1306. I mean,

  1307. it verges on

  1308. being ridiculous.

  1309. Satan has

  1310. always wanted

  1311. what belongs

  1312. to God

  1313. alone,

  1314. exclusive

  1315. worship.

  1316. What caused

  1317. the fall of

  1318. Satan to

  1319. begin with

  1320. was his

  1321. lifting himself

  1322. up to the

  1323. place of

  1324. God to be

  1325. worshiped.

  1326. And he got

  1327. expelled from

  1328. God's presence

  1329. because of

  1330. it.

  1331. He's a

  1332. glory stealer.

  1333. And so what

  1334. Satan wants

  1335. is for the

  1336. son of God

  1337. to bow down

  1338. and worship

  1339. him.

  1340. In order for

  1341. the son of

  1342. God to bow

  1343. down and

  1344. worship him,

  1345. the son of

  1346. God would

  1347. have to turn

  1348. his back

  1349. on the

  1350. father and

  1351. say,

  1352. sorry,

  1353. I'm no

  1354. longer

  1355. exclusively

  1356. devoted to

  1357. you.

  1358. I'm going

  1359. to get all

  1360. these kingdoms

  1361. in order to

  1362. worship him.

  1363. It's the

  1364. cardinal sin.

  1365. It's the

  1366. worship of

  1367. another God.

  1368. But it's

  1369. also a

  1370. shortcut.

  1371. What Satan

  1372. is offering

  1373. Jesus is

  1374. all the

  1375. kingdoms of

  1376. the world

  1377. without

  1378. suffering.

  1379. It's

  1380. undermining

  1381. the very

  1382. mission of

  1383. the

  1384. son of

  1385. God.

  1386. Would you

  1387. turn in

  1388. your

  1389. Bibles to

  1390. Matthew

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  1391. chapter 28?

  1392. This

  1393. comes after

  1394. Jesus

  1395. suffers,

  1396. after he's

  1397. crucified,

  1398. dead,

  1399. buried,

  1400. and raised

  1401. from the

  1402. dead.

  1403. I just

  1404. want your

  1405. eyes to

  1406. fall upon

  1407. something.

  1408. Matthew

    Matthew 28:18

  1409. chapter 28

  1410. verse 18.

  1411. This is the

  1412. great commission.

  1413. This is after

  1414. all of his

  1415. suffering.

  1416. And Jesus

  1417. came and

  1418. said to

  1419. his disciples,

  1420. all authority

  1421. in heaven

  1422. and on

  1423. earth has

  1424. been given

  1425. to me.

  1426. All of

  1427. it's mine.

  1428. It comes

  1429. after his

  1430. work on the

  1431. cross.

  1432. In order

  1433. for Jesus

  1434. to accomplish

  1435. his mission,

  1436. he would have

  1437. to suffer.

  1438. Jesus knew

  1439. full well that

  1440. what lied

  1441. ahead of him

  1442. was pain

  1443. and hardship,

  1444. betrayal,

  1445. that he would

  1446. have to bear

  1447. the very

  1448. wrath of the

  1449. Father in

  1450. order to

  1451. save a

  1452. people for

  1453. himself.

  1454. And Satan

  1455. very subtly

  1456. here is saying,

  1457. hey, I'll give you

  1458. a shortcut.

  1459. I'll give you all

  1460. the kingdoms of the

  1461. world and their

  1462. glory if you

  1463. just bow down

  1464. and worship me.

  1465. And then we

  1466. see in verse

  1467. 10,

  1468. Jesus brings

  1469. this bout to

  1470. an end.

  1471. Be gone,

  1472. Satan, for it

  1473. is written.

  1474. Be gone,

  1475. Satan, for it

  1476. is written.

  1477. We're done here,

  1478. Satan, for it

  1479. is written.

  1480. Deuteronomy 6.13,

  1481. you shall worship

  1482. the Lord your God

  1483. and him only,

  1484. him only,

  1485. exclusive worship

  1486. and service.

  1487. Him only

  1488. shall you serve.

  1489. Now, Israel

  1490. failed that test,

  1491. but Jesus,

  1492. the true Son,

  1493. is faithful.

  1494. He proves

  1495. himself to be

  1496. faithful in his

  1497. worship of his

  1498. Father.

  1499. What Jesus is

  1500. saying in

  1501. Deuteronomy 6.13

  1502. is that I

  1503. submit to his

  1504. word, my

  1505. Father's word,

  1506. not your word.

  1507. I don't buy

  1508. your little

  1509. half promise.

  1510. I don't buy

  1511. the shortcut.

  1512. I see what God

  1513. the Father has

  1514. called me to as

  1515. a son.

  1516. And I'm going

  1517. to stick to

  1518. it.

  1519. I'm going to

  1520. do it.

  1521. Jesus is saying,

  1522. I worship and

  1523. serve not no

  1524. one but my

  1525. Father.

  1526. I'm exclusively

  1527. and wholeheartedly

  1528. and by the way,

  1529. happily devoted to

  1530. him and his will.

  1531. He says,

  1532. get out of

  1533. here.

  1534. Get.

  1535. I belong to

  1536. him.

  1537. Winner of

  1538. round three,

  1539. Jesus.

  1540. He proves

  1541. himself to be

  1542. the true

  1543. son of God,

  1544. the one who

  1545. trusts and

  1546. obeys his

  1547. father.

  1548. He's been

  1549. through some

  1550. extreme temptations

  1551. and he's shown

  1552. himself faithful.

  1553. And then in

  1554. verse 11,

  1555. we see the

  1556. triumph.

  1557. Don't miss

  1558. that first

  1559. little phrase,

  1560. then the devil

  1561. left him.

  1562. Jesus told

  1563. him to leave

  1564. and the devil

  1565. left.

  1566. The devil

  1567. obeyed.

  1568. And then

  1569. what we see

  1570. is the

  1571. angels come

  1572. and minister

  1573. to him.

  1574. Surely they

  1575. brought with

  1576. them food.

  1577. Surely they

  1578. brought with

  1579. them encouragement

  1580. for his

  1581. obedience.

  1582. And surely

  1583. this is the

  1584. right working

  1585. out of Psalm

  1586. 91.

  1587. 91.

  1588. Jesus the

  1589. son has

  1590. entrusted

  1591. himself to

  1592. the father

  1593. and the

  1594. father commanded

  1595. his angels

  1596. concerning him

  1597. and they met

  1598. his needs.

  1599. Jesus triumphed

  1600. over Satan's

  1601. temptations

  1602. proving himself

  1603. to be the

  1604. true son

  1605. of God.

  1606. This says

  1607. he's ready

  1608. to go.

  1609. He's walked

  1610. through it.

  1611. He's resisted

  1612. the devil's

  1613. temptations.

  1614. He's prepared

  1615. to start

  1616. his ministry.

  1617. A light

  1618. has

  1619. dawned.

  1620. Now

  1621. I want to

  1622. point to

  1623. three things

  1624. to walk

  1625. away with.

  1626. The first

  1627. is

  1628. man

  1629. I was

  1630. trying to

  1631. wrestle through

  1632. this this

  1633. week.

  1634. Do I

  1635. apply anything?

  1636. Because it's

  1637. awesome to

  1638. see Jesus

  1639. just resisting

  1640. the devil

  1641. successfully.

  1642. It's

  1643. awesome.

  1644. What a

  1645. God we

  1646. have.

  1647. What a

  1648. king.

  1649. What a

  1650. savior.

  1651. He did

  1652. what none

  1653. of us

  1654. could do.

  1655. He

  1656. perfectly

  1657. lived a

  1658. righteous life.

  1659. Not once

  1660. did he give

  1661. himself to

  1662. temptation.

  1663. Not once.

  1664. He did

  1665. what none

  1666. of us

  1667. could do.

  1668. And then

  1669. he died

  1670. in our

  1671. place for

  1672. our unfaithfulness.

  1673. What a

  1674. God we

  1675. got.

  1676. What a

  1677. savior.

  1678. What a

  1679. king.

  1680. His

  1681. obedience

  1682. from

  1683. beginning to

  1684. end secured

  1685. our salvation.

  1686. He

  1687. submitted

  1688. himself to

  1689. the will

  1690. of the

  1691. father even

  1692. to the

  1693. cross.

  1694. That's

  1695. one thing.

  1696. Rejoice

  1697. in your

  1698. savior.

  1699. Second

  1700. thing.

  1701. Jesus is

  1702. able to

  1703. help you

  1704. when you're

  1705. tempted.

  1706. Because

  1707. Jesus

  1708. suffered

  1709. when he

  1710. was

  1711. tempted.

  1712. Would

  1713. you turn

  1714. your

  1715. Bibles

  1716. to

  1717. Hebrews

    Hebrews 2:18

  1718. chapter 2

  1719. verse 18.

  1720. I just

  1721. want you

  1722. to let

  1723. this sink

  1724. into your

  1725. heart a

  1726. little bit

  1727. because all

  1728. of us

  1729. are facing

  1730. temptations

  1731. right?

  1732. I just

  1733. want to

  1734. let you

  1735. know

  1736. Jesus

  1737. gets

  1738. it.

  1739. He's

  1740. been

  1741. there.

  1742. He knows

  1743. what it's

  1744. like to

  1745. be

  1746. tempted.

  1747. He can

  1748. sympathize

  1749. with our

  1750. weaknesses.

  1751. But not

  1752. only can

  1753. he

  1754. sympathize,

  1755. he can

  1756. help

  1757. you.

  1758. He's

  1759. able to

  1760. help you.

  1761. He's

  1762. willing to

  1763. help you.

  1764. Hebrews

  1765. 2

  1766. 18.

  1767. For

  1768. because he

  1769. himself has

  1770. suffered when

  1771. tempted,

  1772. he is

  1773. able to

  1774. help those

  1775. who are

  1776. being

  1777. tempted.

  1778. Anybody

  1779. tempted in

  1780. the room?

  1781. Anybody?

  1782. Anybody?

  1783. Yes.

  1784. Yes.

  1785. We're all

  1786. tempted.

  1787. And you

  1788. know what?

  1789. Instead of

  1790. letting that

  1791. kind of

  1792. distance you

  1793. from your

  1794. Savior,

  1795. recognize he

  1796. is ready and

  1797. able to

  1798. help you in

  1799. the temptation

  1800. because he

  1801. himself has

  1802. been tempted

  1803. yet without

  1804. sinning.

  1805. You know

  1806. what you

  1807. do when

  1808. tempted?

  1809. Here's what

  1810. I do.

  1811. Jesus,

  1812. help me in

  1813. the middle of

  1814. the night when

  1815. my anxiety

  1816. meter is off

  1817. the charts,

  1818. when my fears

  1819. are going,

  1820. when I don't

  1821. know what's

  1822. going to

  1823. happen.

  1824. I'm trying to

  1825. cling to

  1826. things and

  1827. make sense

  1828. of things and

  1829. I can't because

  1830. my brain is

  1831. not big enough.

  1832. I start to

  1833. freak out.

  1834. You know

  1835. what I do?

  1836. Jesus,

  1837. help me in

  1838. my bed.

  1839. My wife has

  1840. heard it.

  1841. Jesus,

  1842. help me.

  1843. He's able to

  1844. help us when

  1845. tempted.

  1846. He knows

  1847. what it's

  1848. like.

  1849. The last

  1850. thing,

  1851. the third

  1852. thing,

  1853. when temptations

  1854. come,

  1855. Jesus shows

  1856. us how to

  1857. resist temptation.

  1858. We resist

  1859. temptation by

  1860. reciting God's

  1861. word.

  1862. In order to

  1863. recite God's

  1864. word, it's

  1865. got to be on

  1866. our hearts.

  1867. Psalm 119,

  1868. 11, I

  1869. have stored

  1870. up your

  1871. word in

  1872. my heart

  1873. that I

  1874. may not

  1875. sin against

  1876. you.

  1877. We don't

  1878. read the

  1879. Bible just

  1880. to read the

  1881. Bible.

  1882. We read the

  1883. Bible to

  1884. fight.

  1885. We read the

  1886. Bible to

  1887. resist.

  1888. Can we be a

  1889. church that

  1890. regularly says

  1891. when tempted,

  1892. it is written.

  1893. It is written.

  1894. When you're

  1895. tempted to

  1896. greed, it is

  1897. written.

  1898. When you're

  1899. tempted to

  1900. sexual immorality,

  1901. it's written.

  1902. Sinful anger,

  1903. it's written.

  1904. Unforgiveness and

  1905. bitterness, it is

  1906. written.

  1907. Condemnation, it

  1908. is written.

  1909. There's another

  1910. thing I've found

  1911. myself doing in

  1912. the middle of

  1913. the night.

  1914. Lying in my

  1915. bed, and these

  1916. thoughts come in

  1917. of past sins I've

  1918. committed, and I

  1919. start to think,

  1920. what a miserable

  1921. wretch I am, and I

  1922. start thinking more

  1923. about my sin than

  1924. about the Savior who

1925. saved me from it, and

  1926. you know what comes

  1927. into my head?

  1928. It is written.

  1929. There is therefore

  1930. now no condemnation

1931. for those who are in

  1932. Christ Jesus.

1933. If God is for me, who

  1934. can be against me?

  1935. There's nothing that

  1936. separates me from the

1937. love of God, not even

  1938. my own sin.

  1939. when you're afraid, it

  1940. is written.

  1941. God is with me.

  1942. When you're anxious, it

  1943. is written.

  1944. Don't be anxious for

  1945. anything, but in all

  1946. things with prayer and

  1947. supplication, make your

1948. request to God, and He'll

1949. give you the peace of

  1950. God which transcends on

  1951. all understanding.

  1952. When you're questioning

  1953. your worth, it is

  1954. written.

1955. I am the apple of His

  1956. eye.

  1957. When you're facing

  1958. discouragement, it is

  1959. written.

1960. This I call to mind, and

  1961. therefore I have hope.

1962. The steadfast love of the

  1963. Lord never ceases.

  1964. When you're tempted to

  1965. gossip, it is written.

1966. I will use my lips to

  1967. build up.

  1968. Ephesians 4.29.

  1969. Where are you tempted?

  1970. Where are you regularly

  1971. tempted?

1972. Are you saying it is

  1973. written to it?

  1974. Are you resisting it?

  1975. And maybe you're sitting

  1976. and you're saying, well, I

  1977. know where I'm being

  1978. tempted, but I don't know

  1979. where it is written.

  1980. Ask for help.

  1981. Because surely there is

1982. another saint in this room

1983. who's been tempted by the

1984. same thing, and they have

1985. an it is written right

1986. there in the top pocket of

1987. their heart that they can

  1988. share with you.

  1989. Let's seek each other's

1990. help for finding out what

1991. is written so that we can

  1992. honor our Savior in

  1993. resisting the temptations

  1994. of the devil.

1995. We can live in his

  1996. victory that way.

1997. Jesus is the true Son of God.

1998. He fully entrusted, obeyed the

  1999. Father.

  2000. His obedience secured our

2001. salvation, and it compels us

2002. to be faithful and true

  2003. ourselves.

  2004. Let's pray.

2005. God in heaven, we are a tempted

  2006. people.

2007. And we have a Savior who trusted

2008. and obeyed and never, never

  2009. wavered.

2010. He was tempted in every way, yet

  2011. without sin.

2012. And God, we rejoice in our Savior

2013. who won this bout with the devil,

2014. and then through his death,

  2015. through his resurrection,

2016. he triumphed over the power

  2017. of sin.

2018. And we are now united with him

2019. in his death and resurrection,

2020. and so we're dead to sin and

2021. alive to God in Christ Jesus.

2022. And we give you thanks for that,

  2023. God.

2024. Help us to rejoice in our Savior.

2025. Help us to fight with it as

  2026. written in Jesus' name.

  2027. Amen.
