  1. Well, good morning.

  2. My name's Billy Nye.

  3. I lead the high school ministry here,

  4. and it's my privilege to open God's Word with you this morning.

  5. So who knows what tomorrow is?

  6. Anybody been watching the news?

  7. Iowa.

  8. Iowa caucuses.

  9. It's tomorrow, right?

  10. That's what I thought.

  11. Okay.

  12. I know you're all really thrilled about that,

  13. and you're like, why is he starting off his sermon talking about the Iowa caucus?

  14. We don't want to hear any more about this election.

  15. Well, in honor of this very important day,

  16. I want to play a little game with you today.

  17. I'm sure most of you watch the news.

  18. You're probably aware of some of the candidates.

  19. You can't be in this society

  20. without glimpsing some little snippet here and there of the candidates

  21. and the things that are going on.

  22. So I'm sure probably some of you already have in your minds

  23. an ideal candidate and the opposite ideal candidate.

  24. A worst case scenario and a best case scenario.

  25. I'm assuming that's probably true.

  26. Let's play a little game.

  27. Let's pretend just for a moment,

  28. just for a moment, a very scary moment,

  29. that your worst case scenario candidate gets elected.

  30. Yikes!

  31. Okay, okay, stop.

  32. Stop thinking.

  33. Stop pretending.

  34. I know that's painful.

  35. You're probably thinking,

  36. no, don't torment me with that anymore.

  37. Okay, so I did that just to communicate some comfort to you.

  38. Just in case that worst case scenario happens,

  39. they have a maximum of eight years

  40. to do whatever damage they're going to do, right?

  41. A maximum of eight years.

  42. Okay.

  43. Unless they decide to change the Constitution.

  44. But we're not going to go to those horrible contingencies.

  45. Okay.

  46. Let's play a better game.

  47. Let's pretend that if you're a worst case scenario candidate,

  48. get them out of your mind.

  49. They're gone.

  50. Okay.

  51. Let's pretend you're a best case scenario candidate.

  52. Even if it's like the most unlikely person,

  53. but your best case scenario candidate,

  54. they get elected.

  55. Yay!

  56. Is that exciting or what?

  57. That's hope giving.

  58. It may not happen, but that's okay.

  59. We can pretend for a little bit.

  60. Here's the bad news.

  61. They only have a maximum of eight years

  62. to do whatever good they're going to do, right?

  63. And then it's, you know,

  64. and then it's up to, you know,

  65. whoever comes after them.

  66. Okay, let's just keep pretending for just a little bit more.

  67. Let's just play a little game just for a little bit more.

  68. Let's take that best case scenario candidate that you had

  69. and let's stretch it to the extreme.

  70. Someone comes to power who is infinitely good,

  71. infinitely wise,

  72. and infinitely powerful.

  73. So this person can do the maximum amount of good,

  74. an infinite amount of good,

  75. for the longest amount of time,

  76. and can do no wrong.

  77. Now, even if you had a vote to get him out of power,

  78. you wouldn't want to.

  79. Because he's so good,

  80. and he's so wise,

  81. and he's so responsible,

  82. he's so capable,

  83. man, you wouldn't want to get him out.

  84. I've got, you know,

  85. some respect for the presidential candidates right now,

  86. a couple of them,

  87. but, you know, putting that aside,

  88. I'd rather have that guy

  89. who's infinitely good,

  90. infinitely wise,

  91. infinitely responsible,

  92. infinitely capable,

  93. and he's always going to be in power.

  94. We don't have to worry about some loser

  95. coming after him

  96. and wrecking all the bad things he's done.

  97. Well, I have good news for you.

  98. This guy exists.

  99. Let's go to the Gospel of Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  100. and we're going to find out about him.

  101. Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  102. we're going to be in the last half

  103. of Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4:12–25

  104. verses 12 through 25.

  105. While you're going,

  106. while you're turning there,

  107. let me just tell you some of the names

  108. we've heard this guy been called

  109. in the book of Matthew so far.

  110. He's been called the son of David.

  111. David, the mighty king.

  112. The hearts of the people were his.

  113. He had a sword of power in his fist,

  114. and he was good,

  115. and he was wise,

  116. and this guy is this guy's greater son.

  117. He's also called Emmanuel,

  118. God with us.

  119. His name is Jesus.

  120. He's the one who will save his people

  121. from their sins.

  122. He's called the Christ,

  123. the Messiah,

  124. God's anointed,

  125. picked out,

  126. hand-picked leader of his people.

  127. He's called the king of the Jews,

  128. the king of God's people.

  129. He's called God's beloved son.

  130. He's so much like God

  131. and so resembling of God's perfect character

  132. that he's called God's son.

  133. John the Baptist called him

  134. the one who is mightier than he,

  135. and John the Baptist was the last great prophet,

  136. the one who spoke God's words,

  137. and this guy is mightier than John the Baptist,

  138. and so he's going to baptize God's people

  139. with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  140. He's going to do a mighty work to God's people,

  141. so that's his name,

  142. or those are his names.

  143. So we're going to be looking at this guy,

  144. this powerful figure,

  145. and we're going to be looking at his reign,

  146. his kingdom,

  147. his exercise of power

  148. when he gets into office,

  149. and this passage is going to help us see

  150. that his reign,

  151. his rule,

  152. his kingdom

  153. is the best case scenario

  154. we could ever imagine,

  155. the best good news

  156. that we could ever hear.

  157. I want us to find that idea

  158. of his kingdom being the good news for us.

  159. I want us to find it in the passage real quick,

  160. so go to verse 23.

  161. I want you to know that I'm not making this up.

  162. Look at verse 23,

  163. and he, Jesus,

  164. went throughout all Galilee,

  165. teaching in the synagogues

  166. and proclaiming the,

  167. say it with me,

  168. gospel of the kingdom.

  169. So this is the first time we see the phrase

  170. gospel of the kingdom

  171. in the book of Matthew,

  172. and Jesus is saying

  173. that the kingdom is gospel,

  174. the gospel of the kingdom.

  175. The kingdom is good news.

  176. That's what gospel means.

  177. So there's a good news

  178. about this kingdom,

  179. but whose kingdom?

  180. What kingdom are we talking about?

  181. Well, follow back up to verse 17,

  182. and we'll see the term kingdom used again,

  183. but it's got a little modifier.

  184. Let's look at it.

  185. Jesus, from that time,

  186. began to preach,

  187. saying,

  188. repent,

  189. for the kingdom of,

  190. say it with me,

  191. heaven is at hand.

  192. So heaven is,

  193. this is,

  194. Jesus is proclaiming the kingdom of heaven,

  195. and heaven is God's space.

  196. Heaven is where God's rule and reign

  197. are totally evident

  198. and unquestioned all the time.

  199. But this is not heaven.

  200. This is earth.

  201. This is the world that we live in,

  202. and unfortunately,

  203. the one who has been delegated authority

  204. over this world

  205. is not very good.

  206. He is Satan.

  207. He has been given authority

  208. to rule over this world.

  209. But all of a sudden,

  210. Jesus shows up on the scene here,

  211. and he says,

  212. behold,

  213. the kingdom of heaven

  214. is at hand.

  215. Repent,

  216. the kingdom of heaven

  217. is here.

  218. So we see that God's rule

  219. is invading

  220. Satan's jurisdiction.

  221. God's reign

  222. has come near.

  223. That sounds like good news.

  224. But how?

  225. How has it come near?

  226. In what way has it come near?

  227. In the person

  228. who's speaking these words.

  229. In the person of Jesus.

  230. This guy,

  231. Jesus,

  232. who is God

  233. with us.

  234. God himself

  235. drawn near

  236. to his rebellious image bearers

  237. to reestablish

  238. his reign over them

  239. and to do good to them

  240. for all time.

  241. This sounds like

  242. a best case scenario to me.

  243. This sounds like good news.

  244. So what's the gospel

  245. of the kingdom?

  246. What's the good news

  247. about God's reign?

  248. The good news

  249. is that God's reign

  250. has drawn near to us

  251. through the personal

  252. presence

  253. of the king.

  254. God's reign

  255. has drawn near

  256. to us

  257. to humans

  258. through the personal

  259. presence

  260. of the king.

  261. And this passage

  262. is going to paint

  263. three pictures

  264. of what that

  265. personal presence

  266. of the king

  267. is going to do

  268. and why that's good.

  269. So let's

  270. look at these

  271. three pictures

  272. that this passage

  273. is going to show us

  274. about how

  275. this

  276. rule of God

  277. come near to us

  278. in the personal presence

  279. of the king

  280. is going to be good

  281. and do good

  282. for God's people

  283. and how we can respond

  284. to that today.

  285. Ready?

  286. Picture number one.

  287. Our king

  288. has drawn near

  289. to be the great light

  290. in our darkness.

  291. That's the first picture.

  292. Our king has drawn near

  293. to be the great light

  294. in our darkness.

  295. Let's read verses 12

  296. through 17.

  297. Read with me.

  298. Now,

  299. when he heard

  300. that John had been arrested,

  301. he withdrew

  302. into Galilee.

  303. And leaving Nazareth,

  304. he went and lived

  305. in Capernaum

  306. by the sea

  307. in the territory

  308. of Zebulun

  309. and Naphtali

  310. so that

  311. what was spoken

  312. by the prophet Isaiah

  313. might be fulfilled.

  314. the land of Zebulun

  315. and the land of Naphtali,

  316. the way of the sea,

  317. beyond the Jordan,

  318. Galilee of the Gentiles,

  319. the people

  320. dwelling in darkness

  321. have seen

  322. a great light.

  323. And for those

  324. dwelling in the region

  325. in the shadow of death,

  326. on them

  327. a light

  328. has

  329. dawned.

  330. From that time,

  331. Jesus began to preach

  332. saying,

  333. Repent

  334. for the kingdom

  335. of heaven

  336. is at hand.

  337. Literally,

  338. has come near.

  339. He's in the state

  340. of being near.

  341. So what's Matthew

  342. trying to paint

  343. a picture of here?

  344. It appears

  345. he's just telling us

  346. that Jesus made

  347. a geographical move

  348. from the south

  349. of Israel

  350. in Judea

  351. where he was baptized

  352. up to the north

  353. of Israel

  354. and to Galilee.

  355. So what's the big deal?

  356. But

  357. there's a big deal.

  358. There's a very

  359. intentional,

  360. significant reason

  361. that Matthew

  362. has

  363. given us

  364. this

  365. detail about

  366. Jesus' life

  367. and he's going

  368. to give us

  369. the significance

  370. through the lens

  371. of a prophecy

  372. made 700 years

  373. before Jesus

  374. was born

  375. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  376. chapter 9.

  377. That sounds

  378. very interesting.

  379. So,

  380. let's

  381. go there.

  382. hop over

  383. to me,

  384. with me,

  385. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  386. chapter 9.

  387. I just want you guys

  388. to see this

  389. in the context.

  390. Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  391. Isaiah's kind of

  392. right in the middle

  393. of your Bible.

  394. Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  395. We just read,

  396. basically,

  397. the first two verses

  398. of Isaiah chapter 9

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  399. in Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  400. Matthew's quoting Isaiah.

  401. And I just want to read

  402. the rest of this passage

  403. and I want you to get a feel

  404. for what and who

  405. Matthew is talking about

  406. as he's talking about

  407. this light dawning.

  408. You have multiplied

  409. the nation.

  410. I'm starting at verse 3.

  411. You have multiplied

  412. the nation.

  413. You have increased

  414. its joy.

  415. They rejoice before you

  416. as with the joy

  417. at the harvest.

  418. Man,

  419. there's a lot of joy

  420. going on.

  421. And they are glad

  422. when they divide

  423. the spoil.

  424. For the yoke

  425. of his burden

  426. and the staff

  427. for his shoulder,

  428. the rod of his oppressor,

  429. you have broken

  430. as on the day

  431. of Midian.

  432. For every boot

  433. of the tramping warrior

  434. in battle tumult

  435. and every garment

  436. rolled in blood

  437. will be burned

  438. as fuel for the fire.

  439. No more war.

  440. Broken yoke

  441. on their backs.

  442. For what reason?

  443. For to us

  444. a child is born.

  445. This should sound familiar.

  446. To us a son

  447. is given

  448. and the government

  449. shall be upon

  450. his shoulder

  451. and his name

  452. shall be called

  453. Wonderful Counselor,

  454. Mighty God,

  455. Everlasting Father,

  456. Prince of Peace

  457. and of the increase

  458. of his government

  459. and of peace

  460. there will be no end

  461. and on the throne

  462. of David

  463. and over his kingdom

  464. to establish it

  465. and uphold it

  466. with justice

  467. and with righteousness

  468. from this time forth

  469. and forevermore

  470. the zeal

  471. of the Lord of hosts

  472. will do this.

  473. That's what Matthew

  474. has in mind

  475. as he is quoting

  476. Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  477. So Jesus,

  478. he's making

  479. a very clear connection here.

  480. Jesus is that one

  481. that Isaiah 9

  482. is talking about.

  483. The son that was given.

  484. The child that was born.

  485. The one who is

  486. Wonderful Counselor,

  487. Mighty God,

  488. Prince of Peace.

  489. The one who is

  490. Everlasting Father.

  491. The one who has

  492. the government

  493. of God's people

  494. on his shoulder

  495. and he can bear it.

  496. The one who is going

  497. to sit on the throne

  498. of David.

  499. I mean it just keeps going.

  500. It's the Messiah.

  501. It's God's King.

  502. The one is finally come

  503. and he's about

  504. to announce his reign.

  505. But the really

  506. interesting thing is

  507. where is he going

  508. to do it?

  509. Where is he going

  510. to announce God's reign?

  511. His reign come

  512. to invade Satan's jurisdiction.

  513. Is he going to do it

  514. in Jerusalem?

  515. I mean Jerusalem

  516. was the capital city.

  517. It was the city of David.

  518. That's where David's throne

  519. was, his ancestor.

  520. So that's where

  521. God's presence resides

  522. in the temple.

  523. That's where the

  524. sacrifices are made.

  525. That's where God

  526. communes with his people.

  527. That's where the power

  528. and the influences

  529. politically.

  530. All the important Jews

  531. live there.

  532. Is he going to do it there?

  533. No, he goes to Galilee.

  534. Galilee was a little

  535. bustling backwater

  536. of a region

  537. that was far away

  538. from the Jewish

  539. center of power.

  540. Why did he go there?

  541. Galilee was quite a

  542. melting pot of diversity.

  543. It was a Jewish territory.

  544. There were Jews

  545. living there.

  546. It was the ancient

  547. territory of the

  548. tribes Zebulun

  549. and Naphtali

  550. according to Isaiah 9.

  551. But in the 8th century BC

  552. a bunch of crazy

  553. Assyrians rode in

  554. at God's bidding

  555. and they took out

  556. the tribes of Zebulun

  557. and Naphtali

  558. and destroyed their

  559. towns and villages

  560. and carved off

  561. the survivors

  562. to Assyria

  563. and they went into exile.

  564. And in their place

  565. came a whole lot

  566. of different

  567. pagan,

  568. non-Jew,

  569. not knowing

  570. living God

  571. people

  572. and they came

  573. and they settled

  574. in that area

  575. and eventually

  576. some exiles trickled back.

  577. Jews coming back

  578. and they settled there.

  579. So Galilee was just a

  580. it was a melting pot.

  581. There were Jews there.

  582. There were Gentiles there.

  583. And in Jesus' time

  584. it was

  585. it was kind of like

  586. St. Louis was

  587. 150 years ago.

  588. St. Louis was the gateway

  589. to the west.

  590. Everyone driven through

  591. St. Louis

  592. seen the arch?

  593. Okay.

  594. It's the gateway

  595. to the west.

  596. You go to St. Louis

  597. and if you want to go

  598. to the west

  599. you go through St. Louis

  600. and that's where you

  601. get on the Oregon Trail

  602. to go west.

  603. Well, Galilee was like that

  604. only it was the gateway

  605. to the heathen north

  606. and the heathen east.

  607. And the roads

  608. from the Roman Empire

  609. ran down through Galilee.

  610. And so lots of trade routes

  611. were set up

  612. that ran to east

  613. to the Mediterranean

  614. or west

  615. to the Mediterranean coast

  616. as well as to the riches

  617. in the east

  618. in the old Persian Empire.

  619. And so all these places

  620. were surrounded by

  621. Galilee was surrounded

  622. by heathen people.

  623. People who didn't know

  624. the living God.

  625. People who were

  626. living in darkness.

  627. There were Jews there too

  628. but they were certainly

  629. influenced by

  630. their Gentile neighbors.

  631. So why did he go there?

  632. Why did Jesus go to this place?

  633. You might be tempted

  634. to think that he's acting

  635. out of fear

  636. because we just read

  637. that John had been arrested.

  638. But Satan,

  639. Jesus has just been

  640. staring down Satan

  641. in the wilderness.

  642. I don't think he's afraid

  643. of being arrested.

  644. This is Jesus

  645. we're talking about.

  646. Did you notice the verbs

  647. that were used?

  648. He withdrew into Galilee.

  649. That sounds very intentional.

  650. And he went and he lived.

  651. Literally he settled down.

  652. He took up housekeeping

  653. in Capernaum.

  654. So there's intention here.

  655. But what is that intention?

  656. It's because these people

  657. were living in darkness.

  658. It's because

  659. they were dwelling.

  660. Literally the word for dwelling

  661. means sitting.

  662. They were sitting in darkness.

  663. For those sitting in the region

  664. and the shadow of death

  665. a light has dawned.

  666. Jesus has come

  667. to be the light

  668. in the darkness.

  669. Where it was most needed

  670. Jesus came

  671. to dawn the light

  672. of the kingdom.

  673. And what does he do?

  674. He announces his kingdom.

  675. Repent

  676. for the kingdom of heaven

  677. is at hand.

  678. Isaiah saw it

  679. 700 years before

  680. Jesus came.

  681. The king would come

  682. and he would announce

  683. and begin his reign

  684. of light

  685. not in the center

  686. of the cultural hub

  687. of Jerusalem

  688. but in the backwater

  689. of Galilee

  690. where much light

  691. was needed.

  692. God's been

  693. doing this

  694. for the whole

  695. of history.

  696. Even from the very beginning

  697. of the garden

  698. when Adam and Eve fell

  699. he promised

  700. that he would send

  701. a snake crusher.

  702. He promised

  703. that he would send

  704. someone to deliver

  705. God's people

  706. from the darkness.

  707. And then

  708. he gave a promise

  709. to Abraham

  710. in Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  711. where he says

  712. all the nations

  713. of the earth

  714. will be blessed

  715. through your family.

  716. God set

  717. a rescue plan

  718. into motion

  719. and that was

  720. God's mission

  721. to save

  722. to dawn the light

  723. upon those

  724. who were in darkness.

  725. And now it's happening.

  726. Where there was

  727. total darkness

  728. and no hope

  729. the king came

  730. and the light

  731. was dawned.

  732. And the cool thing

  733. is they didn't ask

  734. for it.

  735. They weren't looking

  736. for it.

  737. It was unanticipated.

  738. It was kind of like

  739. the shepherds

  740. watching their flocks

  741. by night.

  742. They weren't asking

  743. for a bunch of angels

  744. to show up

  745. and blind them

  746. with the glory of heaven

  747. and tell them

  748. he's here!

  749. It was totally

  750. by grace

  751. that Jesus has come

  752. to dawn

  753. upon those

  754. in darkness.

  755. But did you notice

  756. that the presence

  757. of the king

  758. and the announcement

  759. of his reign

  760. demands action?

  761. What does Jesus say?

  762. Repent

  763. for the kingdom

  764. of heaven

  765. is at hand.

  766. Those dwelling

  767. in darkness

  768. must respond

  769. to the light

  770. that has dawned

  771. upon them

  772. by turning

  773. from the darkness

  774. and of sin

  775. and self-sufficiency

  776. and pride

  777. and turn

  778. toward the light

  779. of the king

  780. who has drawn

  781. near to them

  782. to be their light

  783. in the darkness.

  784. Can I ask you something?

  785. Have you seen

  786. this light?

  787. Have you seen

  788. the light?

  789. Has this light

  790. dawned upon you?

  791. If you're a Christian

  792. then it has.

  793. I want to remind you

  794. of the words

  795. of a beautiful hymn

  796. written by Charles Wesley.

  797. Long my imprisoned

  798. spirit lay

  799. fast bound

  800. in sin

  801. and nature's night.

  802. Thine eye

  803. diffused

  804. a quickening ray.

  805. I woke

  806. the dungeon

  807. flamed with light.

  808. My chains fell off.

  809. My heart was free.

  810. I rose,

  811. went forth

  812. and followed thee.

  813. Many of you remember

  814. what that dungeon

  815. was like.

  816. I do.

  817. You still remember

  818. the feeling

  819. of being trapped

  820. by sin

  821. and the way

  822. that your enemy

  823. was in power

  824. over you.

  825. You still feel

  826. the effects of it.

  827. The ache

  828. of that.

  829. But you have

  830. seen the great light

  831. and the light

  832. has set you free.

  833. So what are you

  834. to do?

  835. Rejoice.

  836. Be grateful.

  837. This light

  838. did not,

  839. you did not deserve

  840. for this light

  841. to dawn upon you.

  842. You were in darkness

  843. and a light

  844. dawned on you.

  845. But maybe you

  846. don't remember.

  847. Maybe you're a Christian

  848. but maybe you don't

  849. remember what

  850. that dungeon

  851. was like.

  852. Maybe

  853. your heart

  854. has become

  855. hard and desensitized

  856. to sin

  857. after a while.

  858. This happens

  859. to me.

  860. Happens to all

  861. of us.

  862. Your eyes

  863. have become

  864. accustomed to

  865. the darkness

  866. maybe again.

  867. It doesn't seem

  868. so bad

  869. because your eyes

  870. haven't been

  871. looking at the

  872. great light

  873. of the gospel

  874. for a while.

  875. So brother or sister

  876. if that's you

  877. can I speak

  878. some words

  879. of encouragement

  880. to you?

  881. Stop and ask

  882. God to cause

  883. a light

  884. of the gospel

  885. of the glory

  886. of Jesus

  887. to shine

  888. in your heart

  889. once again.

  890. Ask God

  891. to get your eyes

  892. on the blinding

  893. light of his glory

  894. and let your eyes

  895. adjust to how

  896. beautiful it is

  897. so you can see

  898. your sin

  899. so you can confess

  900. your sin

  901. repent and turn

  902. again to the light.

  903. Don't let this world

  904. satisfy you

  905. with its promises

  906. of comfort

  907. and convenience

  908. and contentment

  909. because the king

  910. has come

  911. to give us

  912. life and life

  913. abundant

  914. that far outweighs

  915. anything the world

  916. can give.

  917. Maybe you're wondering

  918. what the big deal is.

  919. Maybe you're wondering

  920. darkness, light

  921. those sound like

  922. exclusive

  923. polarizing terms

  924. I mean come on

  925. what's the big deal?

  926. Our modern culture

  927. we've kind of

  928. moved past that

  929. right?

  930. We don't really

  931. like terms

  932. like that

  933. pure

  934. good and evil

  935. light and dark

  936. but the message

  937. of the Bible

  938. is clear

  939. there is a king

  940. and he is good

  941. and he is drawn

  942. near to be light

  943. to those in darkness

  944. and so if you are

  945. not under his rule

  946. can I encourage you

  947. you will continue

  948. in the darkness

  949. living under the shadow

  950. of sin and death

  951. unless you turn

  952. and repent

  953. and see the light

  954. of the glory

  955. of Jesus

  956. he has come

  957. to give you life

  958. so can I ask you

  959. to learn a little

  960. bit more

  961. to ask questions

  962. and to put your

  963. life under

  964. this great light

  965. that has shown

  966. in your darkness

  967. our king

  968. has drawn near

  969. and his coming

  970. was like the rising

  971. of the sun

  972. to scatter the deepest

  973. darkness

  974. picture number two

  975. our king

  976. has drawn near

  977. to be our light

  978. and our darkness

  979. our king now

  980. picture number two

  981. our king has drawn near

  982. to call his own

  983. to himself

  984. let's read verses 18

  985. through 22

  986. read with me please

  987. while walking by the sea

  988. of Galilee

  989. he saw two brothers

  990. Simon who was called

  991. Peter

  992. and Andrew his brother

  993. casting a net

  994. into the sea

  995. for they were fishermen

  996. and he said to them

  997. follow me

  998. and I will make you

  999. fishers of men

  1000. immediately they left

  1001. their nets

  1002. and they followed him

1003. and going on from there

1004. he saw two other brothers

1005. James the son of Zebedee

  1006. and John his brother

  1007. in the boat

  1008. with Zebedee

  1009. at their father

  1010. mending their nets

  1011. and he called them

  1012. also

  1013. immediately they left

  1014. the boat

  1015. and their father

  1016. and followed him

  1017. a couple things

  1018. stand out

  1019. about this

  1020. little picture

  1021. we see here

  1022. first

  1023. it's interesting

  1024. Jesus begins small

  1025. he's just made

  1026. this huge announcement

  1027. the kingdom of heaven

  1028. has drawn near

  1029. we're kind of expecting

  1030. this

  1031. some world changing drama

  1032. to happen

  1033. right

  1034. massive movements

  1035. put into action

  1036. but what happens instead

  1037. Jesus walks along

1038. the shore of this lake

  1039. he sees two fishermen

1040. tells them to follow him

  1041. they leave their stuff

  1042. and they follow him

  1043. and this happens again

  1044. to two other guys

  1045. that's it

  1046. not very world changing

  1047. so far the kingdom

  1048. isn't doing anything big

  1049. just four local fishermen

  1050. that's the cool thing

  1051. about what Matthew

  1052. wants us to see

  1053. about God's rule

  1054. coming in

  1055. King Jesus

  1056. is all about

  1057. God doesn't work

  1058. according to our

  1059. expectations

  1060. Jesus' kingdom

  1061. is an upside down

  1062. kingdom

  1063. it works

  1064. against

  1065. human

  1066. expectations

  1067. it starts small

  1068. it's not flashy

  1069. God works

  1070. God works though

  1071. very powerfully

  1072. through small

  1073. faith filled

  1074. people

  1075. Jesus is interested

  1076. in

  1077. get this

  1078. Jesus is interested

  1079. in individuals

  1080. people like you

  1081. and me

  1082. he's got his eye

  1083. on massive movements

  1084. but he's interested

  1085. in individuals

  1086. he calls his own

  1087. to himself

  1088. one by one

  1089. so do you see

  1090. that this morning

  1091. Matthew wants us

  1092. to see

  1093. this is the way

  1094. the individuals

  1095. get into the

  1096. kingdom of heaven

  1097. we are called

  1098. by the king

  1099. personally

  1100. do you ever doubt

  1101. that Jesus cares

  1102. about you

1103. that you have a place

  1104. or a role

  1105. in God's kingdom

  1106. let this passage

  1107. assure you

  1108. of something

  1109. if you're a kingdom

  1110. Jesus has called

  1111. you

  1112. individually

  1113. personally

  1114. he looked at you

  1115. and he said

  1116. I want you

  1117. in my kingdom

  1118. he didn't send out

  1119. a massive

  1120. generic

  1121. Facebook invitation

  1122. to everyone

  1123. in his social

  1124. media circle

  1125. no he looked up

  1126. your address

  1127. he walked to your

  1128. house

  1129. he knocked on the

  1130. door

  1131. and he said

  1132. follow me

  1133. he came near

  1134. to you

  1135. you weren't

  1136. looking for him

  1137. and he came

  1138. near to you

  1139. in grace

  1140. Jesus cares

  1141. about you

  1142. he calls

  1143. individuals

  1144. notice this

  1145. too

  1146. did you also

  1147. notice that

  1148. there's a cost

  1149. did you notice

  1150. that there's a

  1151. cost to following

  1152. Jesus

  1153. these disciples

  1154. leave their jobs

  1155. and their families

  1156. by the way

  1157. Galilee had a

  1158. very thriving

  1159. fishing industry

  1160. they had good

  1161. jobs

  1162. upper middle

  1163. class

  1164. they were doing

  1165. well

  1166. it's not like

  1167. they're just

  1168. you know

  1169. straggling for

  1170. the next bite

  1171. to eat

  1172. and Jesus

  1173. comes along

  1174. and offers

  1175. them something

  1176. better

  1177. it's not it

  1178. there's a cost

  1179. here

  1180. in our culture

  1181. we value

  1182. financial independence

  1183. and security

  1184. and that's a good

  1185. thing

  1186. I'm not saying

  1187. you should quit

  1188. your job

  1189. to follow Jesus

  1190. and I'm saying

  1191. that

  1192. however

  1193. I'm saying

  1194. that Jesus

  1195. demands

  1196. our whole hearts

  1197. and our whole lives

  1198. our jobs

  1199. are his

  1200. our families

  1201. are his

  1202. our goals

  1203. are his

  1204. our money

  1205. is his

  1206. our retirement

  1207. is his

  1208. our priorities

  1209. are his

  1210. so

  1211. are you withholding

  1212. something from your king

  1213. is there something

  1214. that you know

  1215. he is requiring

  1216. of you

  1217. in obedience

  1218. and trust

  1219. but you're saying

  1220. I'll follow you

  1221. Jesus

  1222. I like you

  1223. but

  1224. our king

  1225. demands

  1226. our lives

  1227. and he

  1228. promises

  1229. us

  1230. true life

  1231. whatever he

  1232. demands of us

  1233. he will supply

  1234. to us

  1235. a hundredfold

  1236. as we trust him

  1237. and obey him

  1238. in this world

  1239. or the next

  1240. it's another part

  1241. of Matthew

  1242. is he part

  1243. of your life

  1244. or is he

  1245. your life

  1246. lastly

  1247. notice

  1248. something else

  1249. about this

  1250. picture

  1251. he promises

  1252. to

  1253. transform

  1254. the disciples

  1255. into

  1256. people

  1257. fishermen

  1258. fishers of men

  1259. not just men

  1260. men women

  1261. children

  1262. people fishermen

  1263. fishers of people

  1264. he is the one

  1265. who transforms us

  1266. into useful members

  1267. of his community

  1268. as we follow him

  1269. he's not looking

  1270. for

  1271. the rock stars

  1272. of the varsity

  1273. Christian team

  1274. he is looking

  1275. for small

  1276. faith filled

  1277. people

  1278. who will give

  1279. him their lives

  1280. and trust him

  1281. with their whole

  1282. hearts

  1283. and he promises

  1284. to make us

  1285. into fishers of men

  1286. do you notice that

  1287. I will make you

  1288. fishers of men

  1289. I don't know about you

  1290. but I'm really bad

  1291. at sharing my faith

  1292. I'll just be honest

  1293. I don't think I have

  1294. the gift of evangelism

  1295. I definitely know

  1296. people who do

  1297. but guess what

  1298. Jesus promises

  1299. to make me one

  1300. to make me

  1301. an evangelist

  1302. to make me

1303. into a fishers of men

  1304. some are better

  1305. than others

  1306. naturally for sure

  1307. but

  1308. he has called us

  1309. all to be fishers

  1310. of men

  1311. part of following

  1312. Jesus is seeing

  1313. his light

  1314. having the light

  1315. dawn upon you

  1316. and then also

  1317. seeing that there

  1318. are some in darkness

  1319. and they desperately

  1320. need the light

  1321. and that's here

  1322. in this area

  1323. here in your

  1324. neighborhood

  1325. and that's also

  1326. in China

  1327. and that's also

  1328. in the universities

  1329. of this land

  1330. that's also

  1331. in Europe

  1332. that's also

  1333. in Africa

  1334. that's also

  1335. in the Muslim world

  1336. all over the place

  1337. people need to hear

  1338. the gospel

  1339. people need to be

  1340. fished into the kingdom

  1341. and he promises

  1342. to make us

  1343. into fishers

  1344. of his kingdom

  1345. and so if that

  1346. sounds like

  1347. an incredible task

  1348. it is

  1349. but he has promised

  1350. to do it

  1351. after service

  1352. we can have

  1353. an opportunity

  1354. to start small

  1355. we got a ministry

  1356. fair going on

  1357. downstairs

  1358. our mission

  1359. as a church

  1360. is to just join

  1361. Jesus and his mission

  1362. of fishing people

  1363. out of the darkness

  1364. and into the light

  1365. and so

  1366. come downstairs

  1367. after the service

  1368. and find out

  1369. where you can

  1370. meaningfully be a part

  1371. of our mission

  1372. which is Jesus' mission

  1373. to make disciples

  1374. of all nations

  1375. picture number three

  1376. so our king

  1377. is drawn near

  1378. to be our light

  1379. in our darkness

  1380. he's drawn near

  1381. to call his own

  1382. to himself

  1383. and three

  1384. our king

  1385. has drawn near

  1386. to deliver

  1387. all people

  1388. from the power

  1389. of sin

  1390. and evil

  1391. he's drawn near

  1392. to deliver

  1393. all people

  1394. from the power

  1395. of sin

  1396. and evil

  1397. read with me

  1398. verses 23

  1399. through 25

  1400. and he went

  1401. throughout all

  1402. Galilee

  1403. teaching in their

  1404. synagogues

  1405. and proclaiming

  1406. the gospel

  1407. the good news

  1408. of the kingdom

  1409. and healing

  1410. every disease

  1411. and every affliction

  1412. among the people

  1413. so his fame

  1414. spread throughout

  1415. all Syria

  1416. and they brought

  1417. to him

  1418. all the sick

  1419. those afflicted

  1420. with various diseases

  1421. and pains

  1422. those oppressed

  1423. by demons

  1424. epileptics

  1425. and paralytics

  1426. and he healed

  1427. them

  1428. and great crowds

  1429. followed him

  1430. from Galilee

  1431. and the Decapolis

  1432. and from Jerusalem

  1433. and Judea

  1434. and from beyond

  1435. the Jordan

  1436. so this little section

  1437. right here

  1438. kind of serves

  1439. as a summary

  1440. that Matthew

  1441. is going to use

  1442. to springboard us

  1443. into the next

  1444. several chapters

  1445. of his gospel

  1446. so it's a summary

  1447. of what Jesus

  1448. did in Galilee

  1449. in proclaiming

  1450. the good news

  1451. of the kingdom

  1452. so we're going

  1453. to see

  1454. in the weeks

  1455. and months

  1456. to come

  1457. this little summary

  1458. gets spelled out

  1459. in greater detail

  1460. but even in this

  1461. little teaser

  1462. there are two big

  1463. things that stand out

  1464. I want you guys

  1465. to see

  1466. first

  1467. the king

  1468. is on the move

1469. and he's on the move

  1470. for all people

  1471. the king

  1472. is on the move

1473. and he's on the move

  1474. for all people

  1475. I absolutely love

  1476. the Chronicles of Narnia

  1477. I'm sure I think

  1478. I've already said that

  1479. before from the pulpit

1480. I love the Chronicles of Narnia

  1481. and there's this part

1482. in the Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe

1483. when the four Pevensey children

1484. are in Mr. and Mr. Beaver's house

1485. and they hear the name of Aslan

  1486. for the first time

1487. and they have no idea

1488. who Mr. and Mrs. Beaver

  1489. are talking about

1490. but they hear them say

1491. Aslan is on the move

1492. and they don't even know

  1493. who Aslan is

1494. and yet they feel this thrill

  1495. rise in their hearts

1496. Aslan is on the move

1497. the king is on the move here

  1498. did you notice

  1499. all the alls

  1500. and the everys

  1501. he is moving

  1502. and did you see

1503. all the geographical place names

  1504. Galilee

  1505. Decapolis

  1506. Jerusalem

  1507. Judea

  1508. beyond the Jordan

  1509. Syria

  1510. holy smokes

  1511. the king is moving

  1512. and he's moving

  1513. to all people

  1514. so he went throughout

  1515. all Galilee

  1516. did you notice that

  1517. verse 23

  1518. teaching

  1519. preaching

  1520. and healing

  1521. tons of people

  1522. every disease

  1523. and every affliction

  1524. among the people

  1525. that means

  1526. everything that was

  1527. brought to him

  1528. he dealt with it

  1529. everything he encountered

  1530. he dealt with it

  1531. but his activity

  1532. in all of Galilee

  1533. also made his fame

1534. spread to all of Syria

  1535. verse 24

  1536. by the way

  1537. Syria is just

  1538. probably just

  1539. the Roman province

  1540. that included

  1541. all of Palestine

  1542. and the surrounding area

  1543. so this is

  1544. Jews

  1545. Gentiles

  1546. everybody

  1547. so it's a big area

  1548. and so his fame

  1549. is spread

  1550. from his operation

  1551. in Galilee

  1552. it's gone out

  1553. and then

  1554. we see

  1555. great crowds

  1556. are following him

  1557. from Galilee

  1558. Decapolis

  1559. Galilee's in the north

  1560. Decapolis is in the

  1561. southeast

  1562. on the eastern side

  1563. of the

  1564. Sea of Galilee

  1565. Jerusalem and Judea

1566. all the way in the south

1567. you have to come over

  1568. lots of mountains

1569. to get up to Galilee

  1570. from Jerusalem and Judea

1571. and then beyond the Jordan

  1572. which is probably

1573. the area to the southeast

  1574. south of the Decapolis

  1575. and so

  1576. oh and the west

  1577. is not mentioned

  1578. because that's the

  1579. Mediterranean Sea

  1580. there's nobody there

  1581. so basically

  1582. they're everywhere

  1583. where there are people

  1584. around

  1585. and they were coming

  1586. to Jesus

  1587. and the blessings

  1588. of God's rule

  1589. and his reign

  1590. were coming to them

  1591. through him

  1592. he's on the move

  1593. secondly

  1594. notice this

  1595. the good news

  1596. of the king's nearness

  1597. to all these people

  1598. came in the form

  1599. of deliverance

  1600. from the effects

  1601. of

  1602. and the consequences

  1603. of sin

  1604. and evil

  1605. Jesus' healings

  1606. were like little sparks

  1607. of light

  1608. in the darkness

  1609. that signaled

  1610. the breaking in

  1611. of God's good rule

  1612. to undo

  1613. and heal

  1614. the brokenness

  1615. of our world

  1616. they were signs

  1617. of his kingly credentials

  1618. that yes

  1619. he is the king

  1620. spreading God's kingdom

  1621. to the kingdom

  1622. of darkness

  1623. by healing

  1624. all and every kind

  1625. of ugly effect

1626. of the fall of man

  1627. that he encountered

  1628. he was exercising

  1629. the kingly authority

  1630. to extend

  1631. the blessings

  1632. of his rule

  1633. mastering

  1634. every illness

  1635. and disease

  1636. among them

  1637. simply by his presence

  1638. simply by his word

  1639. simply by his touch

  1640. if you read

  1641. through the healings

  1642. of Jesus

  1643. throughout the gospels

  1644. all he does

  1645. is just

  1646. touch

  1647. or heal people

  1648. but with a word

  1649. that's all he does

  1650. he speaks a word

  1651. or he touches them

  1652. or he

  1653. make a little mud

  1654. thingamajig

1655. and put it on their eyes

  1656. it's just simple

  1657. it's not

  1658. there were ancient

  1659. healers

  1660. in this time

  1661. who just made

  1662. elaborate healing

  1663. methods

  1664. and they kind of

  1665. wrote books

  1666. of how to heal

  1667. by mixing this potion

  1668. and that

  1669. Jesus says

  1670. it's gone

  1671. done

  1672. that's his authority

  1673. and so it's a little

  1674. spark of light

  1675. in the darkness

  1676. physical ailments

  1677. even paralysis

  1678. total disability

  1679. you're paralyzed

  1680. this was considered

  1681. incurable

  1682. by the way

  1683. by all those

  1684. ancient healers

  1685. they were subject

  1686. to him

  1687. with a word

  1688. mental disabilities

  1689. like epilepsy

  1690. were mastered

  1691. by him

  1692. with a word

  1693. spiritual torment

  1694. through demonic

  1695. influence

  1696. was abruptly

  1697. ended

  1698. by a word

1699. from the son of God

  1700. I'm really grateful

  1701. for modern medicine

  1702. I think it's

  1703. a wonderful thing

  1704. it's God's blessing

  1705. on the age

  1706. we live in

  1707. but it can't

  1708. hold a candle

  1709. to this kind

  1710. of authority

  1711. our king

  1712. simply mastered

  1713. every form

  1714. of illness

  1715. just by virtue

  1716. of his authority

  1717. of his person

  1718. and it shouldn't

  1719. surprise us

  1720. he's the king

  1721. of life

  1722. he's the light

  1723. in the darkness

  1724. but even more

  1725. than that

  1726. Jesus' healings

  1727. they were signs

  1728. of his authority

  1729. signs of God's rule

  1730. breaking into this

  1731. kingdom of darkness

1732. but even more than that

  1733. they were pointing

  1734. forward to what

  1735. Jesus was going

  1736. to do

  1737. that Isaiah 53

  1738. had announced

  1739. beforehand

  1740. that we were

  1741. he was crushed

  1742. for our iniquities

  1743. he was pierced

  1744. for our transgressions

  1745. the chastisement

  1746. that brought us

  1747. peace was upon him

  1748. by his wounds

  1749. we were healed

  1750. and so all this

  1751. is pointing forward

1752. to all of his healings

  1753. are pointing forward

  1754. to the way

  1755. that he would heal

  1756. the entire

  1757. broken world

  1758. and every lost

  1759. human soul

  1760. that comes to him

  1761. by taking on

  1762. all the darkness

  1763. into himself

  1764. and beating it

  1765. on the cross

  1766. and the empty tomb

  1767. he came to deliver

  1768. all people

  1769. from the effects

  1770. and the power

  1771. of sin and evil

  1772. the darkness

  1773. no longer has dominion

  1774. still has a presence

  1775. we still live

  1776. in this world

  1777. that is affected

  1778. by sin and evil

  1779. we all feel it

  1780. we all feel those

  1781. creaks and groans

  1782. of our own bodies

  1783. and of creation

  1784. we're under the weight

1785. of the curse of sin

  1786. and death

  1787. we feel sickness

  1788. and disease

  1789. and suffering

  1790. but

  1791. now

  1792. and forever

  1793. our king

  1794. has showed

  1795. that he is

  1796. authoritative

  1797. over

  1798. all of that

  1799. and one day

  1800. he's going to come

  1801. he's going to put

  1802. an end

  1803. to all of that

  1804. listen to Revelation 21

  1805. I heard a loud voice

  1806. from the throne

  1807. saying

  1808. behold the dwelling place

  1809. of God

  1810. is with man

  1811. God is with man

  1812. God

  1813. with us

  1814. he will dwell

  1815. with them

  1816. and they will be

  1817. his people

  1818. God himself

  1819. will be with them

  1820. as they're

  1821. did you hear

  1822. how many withs

  1823. there were

  1824. with us

  1825. Emmanuel

  1826. God is with us

  1827. now and forever

  1828. and forever

  1829. he will wipe away

  1830. every tear

  1831. from their eyes

  1832. death

  1833. will be

  1834. no more

  1835. and neither

  1836. shall there be

  1837. mourning

  1838. nor crying

  1839. nor pain

  1840. anymore

  1841. for the former

  1842. things have

  1843. passed away

  1844. because Christ

  1845. has taken it

  1846. all into himself

  1847. at the cross

  1848. so on this side

  1849. of Revelation 21

  1850. we still feel it

  1851. but we also know

  1852. that our king

  1853. has power over it

  1854. are you feeling

  1855. the effects

  1856. and the power

  1857. of sin

  1858. and evil

  1859. at work

  1860. in your own life

  1861. or in the lives

  1862. of those

  1863. that you are

  1864. close to

  1865. there is nothing

  1866. outside the authority

  1867. of King Jesus

  1868. there is no chain

  1869. of sin

  1870. no spiritual oppression

1871. no work of the enemy

  1872. that he cannot break

1873. or turn on its head

1874. go to him in prayer

1875. the elders will be here

  1876. in front

1877. at the end of the service

1878. if you want to come

  1879. and pray

  1880. Christ the King Church

  1881. your king is drawn

  1882. near to you

  1883. his rule

  1884. and his reign

  1885. are near

  1886. to you

  1887. this is good news

1888. and it is good news

  1889. to all people

  1890. and all kinds

  1891. of people

  1892. Jew

  1893. Gentile

  1894. Chinese

  1895. and American

  1896. to us

  1897. to the people

  1898. in your neighborhoods

  1899. to the people

  1900. you work with

  1901. the people

  1902. of all nations

  1903. he is the light

  1904. in our darkness

  1905. he calls us

  1906. as his own

  1907. he delivers us

  1908. and all people

  1909. from the darkness

  1910. of sin

  1911. and death

  1912. and Satan

  1913. so repent

1914. if you need to repent

  1915. for the kingdom

  1916. of heaven

1917. is drawn near to you

  1918. give to him

1919. what he asks of you

  1920. in grace

1921. and know that he is

  1922. calling you

  1923. to be his own

1924. and trust that he will

1925. make you into a fisher

  1926. of men

  1927. and rejoice

  1928. in his reign

  1929. of great light

  1930. let's pray

  1931. father we thank you

  1932. that you did not

  1933. have to

  1934. but you drew

  1935. near to us

  1936. to say

  1937. that the kingdom

  1938. of heaven

  1939. is near

  1940. god the kingdom

  1941. of heaven

  1942. is still near

  1943. to us

  1944. because you

  1945. are with us

  1946. and you've promised

  1947. to be with us

  1948. to the very end

  1949. of the age

  1950. and you've given

  1951. us jobs

  1952. to do

  1953. to be the light

  1954. and the darkness

  1955. in your place

  1956. ambassadors

  1957. of the light

  1958. I pray god

1959. that you would help us

  1960. to do that

1961. I pray that you would

  1962. equip us

1963. as we go to the ministry

1964. fair to do that well

  1965. God would you strengthen

  1966. us as a church

1967. to be on your mission

  1968. to be trusting

  1969. in the light

  1970. that is dawned

  1971. and to be spreading

  1972. that light

  1973. God I pray

  1974. that you would

  1975. cause the light

  1976. to dawn on

  1977. all those

  1978. within the hearing

  1979. of this word

  1980. cause that light

  1981. to dawn

  1982. in power

  1983. would you bring

  1984. repentance

  1985. where it is needed

  1986. we ask this God

  1987. in Christ's name

  1988. Amen
