  1. of His counter-cultural kingdom.

  2. It's radical.

  3. What Jesus is going to get at is the coming kingdom,

  4. His kingdom, His reign,

  5. goes beyond the world of entertainment.

  6. This manifesto makes a claim on every area of our lives.

  7. And it has eternity in scope.

  8. So, Matthew 5, 6, and 7,

  9. we're going to take our time.

  10. We're just going to soak in it.

  11. I don't want to rush through it.

  12. I want you to kind of enjoy it,

  13. to make sure you're hearing what our King is telling us

  14. about ourselves and how to live.

  15. I need that too.

  16. But before we get into kind of the individual parts

  17. on the Sermon on the Mount,

  18. I mean, really, what does it mean to be poor in spirit?

  19. What does Jesus have to say about divorce?

  20. Really, we'll get there.

  21. But this morning, before we get into the details,

  22. into the parts,

  23. I want you to see it as a whole.

  24. I want you to see the manifesto for what it is.

  25. Our King is making a huge claim on our lives,

  26. of who we are,

  27. and how we are to live for His kingdom on earth.

  28. How to live under His reign.

  29. And so I want to give you an overview

  30. of the Sermon on the Mount this morning.

  31. So we're going to be moving briskly.

  32. But here's where I want to begin.

  33. As a follower of Jesus,

  34. as a Christian,

  35. you are a kingdom citizen.

  36. A citizen of heaven.

  37. You are under Jesus' reign.

  38. And so this Sermon on the Mount,

  39. He is speaking to you.

  40. He has you in mind.

  41. The Sermon on the Mount is living and active for us today.

  42. And so this morning,

  43. I'm going to do my best

  44. to kind of split the Sermon on the Mount

  45. into two parts.

  46. There's two parts to this manifesto.

  47. The first part is the Beatitudes.

  48. Who you are, kingdom citizen.

  49. And the second part is the rest of the Sermon on the Mount.

  50. That's how we are to live.

  51. We live in light of the kingdom.

  52. And what we're going to see is

  53. who we are and how we live,

  54. it's counter-cultural.

  55. You ready to dive in?

  56. Amen.

  57. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5:3–10

  58. verses 3 through 10.

  59. Who you are, kingdom citizens.

  60. The Beatitudes.

  61. Now, here's a Captain Obvious statement.

  62. The Beatitudes,

  63. blessed be, blessed be, blessed be, blessed be, blessed be, blessed be, blessed be, blessed be, blessed are, are, are.

  64. They don't come at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.

  65. But, Jesus starts the manifesto with the Beatitudes.

  66. He starts it with who you are, kingdom citizen.

  67. That's where he starts.

  68. And it's important.

  69. Because that's where the rest of the Bible starts.

  70. All the rest of the other epistles,

  71. they start with who you are,

  72. what has God done in you,

  73. and then the rest is how you live.

  74. And this Sermon on the Mount,

  75. this manifesto,

  76. is the same thing.

  77. It starts with you,

  78. what God has done in you,

  79. and then it goes out to how we are to live.

  80. So, it's like Jesus is saying to us,

  81. this is what marks my people.

  82. This is what is true of those who are citizens of my kingdom.

  83. They have a counter-cultural character.

  84. They stand out in a dark world.

  85. And so, what we have in the Beatitudes

  86. are eight descriptions of the character

  87. of a citizen of heaven.

  88. Poor in spirit.

  89. A kingdom citizen knows they're spiritually bankrupt,

  90. apart from God.

  91. kingdom citizens grieve over their sin against God.

  92. They're meek.

  93. They see themselves as God sees them.

  94. They hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  95. Kingdom citizens crave to do the will of their Father.

  96. They're merciful.

  97. Kingdom citizens have been shown mercy,

  98. and they will be shown mercy,

  99. and they show kindness and forgiveness on earth now.

  100. The pure in heart.

  101. Kingdom citizens have pure motives.

  102. God help me.

  103. Peacemakers.

  104. Kingdom citizens.

  105. They bring shalom to their relationships.

  106. They bring shalom to their worlds.

  107. They're not crazy makers.

  108. They're not chaos makers.

  109. They don't divide people.

  110. They seek to unite people,

  111. just as God and Christ has united us with Him.

  112. Kingdom citizens are persecuted for righteousness' sakes.

  113. We suffer for doing the will of our Father.

  114. Now, in all these eight characteristics,

  115. what I want you to see is that they're all Godward in orientation.

  116. They're all moving towards the Lord.

  117. It's all for Him.

  118. It's God aimed.

  119. These Beatitudes,

  120. well, they're not suggested character traits of a kingdom citizen.

  121. They're required character traits of a kingdom citizen.

  122. And don't make the mistake of thinking that these eight marks of a kingdom citizen

  123. are kind of distributed among us,

  124. like some of us are poor in spirit,

  125. and others of us are meek,

  126. and then we have some over here who are persecuted,

  127. and then some over here who are peacemakers.

  128. That's not how this works.

  129. What Jesus is telling us is that each of us

  130. is to possess all eight of these characteristics in growing measure.

  131. It's true of every Christian.

  132. Now, upon hearing that,

  133. I'm not sure what you're feeling,

  134. but all week long,

  135. here's what I've been feeling.

  136. Jesus is calling me to something

  137. that I know,

  138. in and of myself,

  139. I am incapable of doing.

  140. I don't know about you,

  141. but

  142. in and of myself,

  143. I am blind to my own spiritual bankruptcy.

  144. I don't know about you,

  145. but

  146. in and of myself,

  147. I am not meek.

  148. I think too highly of myself.

  149. I don't know about you,

  150. but

  151. in and of myself,

  152. I would not mourn

  153. over my sin.

  154. I don't know about you,

  155. but

  156. in and of myself,

  157. I can't make my heart pure.

  158. I can't purify my motives.

  159. You feeling what I'm talking about?

  160. This Godward orientation we see in the Beatitudes,

  161. this stuff doesn't come naturally to us.

  162. So from the get-go,

  163. you've got to realize

  164. that

  165. to be a citizen

  166. of Christ's kingdom

  167. is to be a recipient

  168. of God's grace.

  169. Only by God's grace

  170. are we able to see

  171. our spiritual depravity.

  172. Only by grace

  173. would we mourn

  174. over our sin

  175. against God.

  176. Only by God's grace

  177. are we able to see ourselves

  178. as God sees us.

  179. Only by God's grace

  180. would we have

  181. any inclination

  182. to do the will of God.

  183. Have you read

  184. Romans 3,

  185. 1 through 10 lately?

  186. There's not one of us

  187. who would see God.

  188. Not one.

  189. It's only by God's grace

  190. that we experience

  191. a purity of heart.

  192. It's a work He does in us.

  193. Do you know what's so beautiful

  194. about the Beatitudes?

  195. You know what's so beautiful about them?

  196. They point us to the beauty

  197. of God's grace

  198. again and again.

  199. He alone can do in us

  200. what we are incapable of.

  201. The kingdom of heaven,

  202. the active reign of Jesus

  203. is a reign

  204. not of terror

  205. but of grace.

  206. He calls us to what is

  207. humanly impossible

  208. but He makes

  209. what is humanly impossible

  210. a reality

  211. through His grace.

  212. He alone can do it.

  213. All those blessed words,

  214. blessed are,

  215. blessed are,

  216. blessed are.

  217. Do you know what blessed means?

  218. happiness?

  219. Happy.

  220. But it's not a circumstantial happiness.

  221. It's not like winning the lottery

  222. and you're happy

  223. and then you've got to pay

  224. half of it to the government

  225. and then you're sad.

  226. I'd still be happy.

  227. Sort of.

  228. To be blessed by God

  229. in this sense

  230. is to have an abiding joy

  231. because you've been graced by God.

  232. He's done something in you.

  233. He's changed you.

  234. He sought you.

  235. He loved you.

  236. He changed you.

  237. Blessed are the poor in spirit

  238. for theirs is the kingdom

  239. of heaven.

  240. Theirs is

  241. the kingdom of heaven.

  242. Kingdom citizens are blessed of God

  243. because they're recipients

  244. of God's grace.

  245. Objects of God's grace.

  246. God did

  247. for us

  248. what we could not do

  249. for ourselves.

  250. He made us alive.

  251. By His grace.

  252. We were born again

  253. unto God.

  254. We are

  255. new creations

  256. in Christ Jesus.

  257. It's all by His grace.

  258. All by His grace.

  259. Not our doing

  260. but His doing.

  261. So Jesus starts out

  262. this manifesto.

  263. This first part

  264. of the manifesto

  265. is all these beatitudes.

  266. All these

  267. blessed R's.

  268. Blessed,

  269. blessed,

  270. blessed.

  271. Blessed by God.

  272. And I just want to see,

  273. help you to see that

  274. the beatitudes

  275. are speaking of people

  276. who have been recipients

  277. of God's grace.

  278. A grace of God

  279. that makes

  280. dead

  281. sinners

  282. alive.

  283. new creations.

  284. A grace of God

  285. that transfers

  286. a sinner

  287. who's been living

  288. in the domain

  289. of darkness

  290. and transfers them

  291. into the kingdom

  292. of the beloved Son.

  293. It's by His grace.

  294. this is who you are.

  295. Brother,

  296. sister in Christ,

  297. fellow

  298. kingdom

  299. citizen,

  300. your citizenship

  301. is yours

  302. by grace.

  303. You didn't earn it.

  304. You've been brought

  305. into the kingdom

  306. by grace,

  307. not by your own merit.

  308. He did a work

  309. in you.

  310. This is what's

  311. to characterize you.

  312. These eight characteristics,

  313. they're counter-cultural.

  314. It's,

  315. they stand out.

  316. It's who you are

  317. and who we are

  318. to continue to be.

  319. These beatitudes

  320. are beautiful

  321. in God's sight.

  322. It's a work

  323. of His grace.

  324. So that's part one.

  325. Who you are.

  326. The beatitudes.

  327. And we're going to

  328. come back to this

  329. over the next few weeks.

  330. We're just going to

  331. take our time

  332. going through

  333. each blessed are.

  334. But the manifesto

  335. begins here.

  336. It doesn't end here.

  337. The Sermon on the Mount

  338. continues.

  339. He moves from saying,

  340. this is who you are,

  341. kingdom citizen,

  342. the one blessed of God,

  343. the one graced.

  344. And then He goes on

  345. to say,

  346. and this is how you live.

  347. Part two of the manifesto.

  348. How kingdom citizens live.

  349. We have a counter-cultural character

  350. born of God's grace

  351. and we live counter-cultural lives

  352. that display His grace.

  353. And so,

  354. let's burn through these.

  355. I want you to get,

  356. acquaint yourself

  357. with the Sermon on the Mount.

  358. So we're just going to

  359. walk through,

  360. follow with me.

  361. I'm going to be kind of a,

  362. I guess,

  363. kind of a tourist host.

  364. Kind of like,

  365. let's go through

  366. these beautiful places.

  367. I'm going to show you.

  368. We're not going to spend

  369. much time,

  370. but we're going to keep

  371. on moving.

  372. Just so you get a sense

  373. of what this sermon

  374. is all about.

  375. how kingdom citizens live.

  376. You've been changed

  377. by God's grace.

  378. And so now we look at

  379. Matthew 5, verse 13.

    Matthew 5:13

  380. So,

  381. how kingdom citizens live?

  382. Well,

  383. the first thing you need

  384. to realize is

  385. kingdom citizens live

  386. to influence.

  387. We've been born of God,

  388. recipients of His grace.

  389. We've been blessed.

  390. And now,

  391. we influence

  392. for the kingdom.

  393. And where Jesus goes,

  394. He gives us two pictures.

  395. Salt and light.

  396. Verses 13 and 14

  397. through 16.

  398. Salt and light.

  399. Salt is a preservative.

  400. It keeps meat

  401. from decaying.

  402. And way back in the day,

  403. you didn't put salt

  404. on something

  405. to make it a little bit

  406. more tasty.

  407. You put salt on something

  408. so it didn't decay.

  409. So it would last.

  410. And we're to have

  411. a preservative effect

  412. in the culture

  413. that we live in

  414. as kingdom citizens.

  415. But He doesn't stop there.

  416. He says that we are

  417. to be light

  418. in the world.

  419. So not only

  420. would He have

  421. a preservative effect,

  422. salt,

  423. we're to have

  424. an enlightening effect.

  425. We're to be a city

  426. set on a hill.

  427. We are to light up

  428. the darkness

  429. with our lives,

  430. pointing to Jesus.

  431. We are to expose

  432. the darkness.

  433. We are to make

  434. Christ known.

  435. And so,

  436. not only preservative,

  437. we are an enlightened bunch.

  438. We're lit up

  439. by God's grace

  440. and we shed light

  441. around us.

  442. We influence

  443. for the kingdom.

  444. That's the first thing

  445. that we see

  446. in verses 13 through 16.

  447. The second way

  448. Jesus points to

  449. the way we're supposed

  450. to live,

  451. we see through

  452. chapter 5,

  453. verses 17 through 48,

  454. and this is

  455. a doozy

  456. of a section.

  457. Jesus says

  458. some unbelievable

  459. things here.

  460. Unbelievable.

  461. But if I were

  462. to summarize it,

  463. it's this.

  464. Kingdom citizens

  465. live to fully

  466. obey

  467. the full intent

  468. of God's Word.

  469. Fully.

  470. We're to fully

  471. obey

  472. the full intent

  473. of God's Word.

  474. And so,

  475. if you look at

  476. chapter 5,

  477. verse 17,

  478. I mean,

  479. think about this.

  480. Red ink,

  481. Jesus saying,

  482. do not think

  483. that I have come

  484. to abolish

  485. the law

  486. or the prophets.

  487. I've not come

  488. to abolish them,

  489. but to fulfill them.

  490. Jesus came

  491. to fulfill

  492. the Old Testament.

  493. Not to put it

  494. on the shelf.

  495. He came

  496. to fulfill it.

  497. At a minimum,

  498. what it does

  499. is helps us

  500. to know how

  501. to then read

  502. our Old Testaments

  503. in light of Jesus.

  504. He came

  505. to fulfill it.

  506. It points

  507. to Him.

  508. Not one iota,

  509. not a dot

  510. will pass

  511. from the law

  512. until all

  513. is accomplished.

  514. It's got purpose.

  515. It's aimed.

  516. He didn't come

  517. to relax the law.

  518. He came

  519. to fulfill

  520. the law,

  521. and He came

  522. to redeem

  523. a people

  524. to live

  525. as fulfillers

  526. of the law.

  527. Jesus came

  528. to uphold

  529. and fulfill

  530. all that the law

  531. and prophets

  532. said.

  533. Part of His

  534. fulfilling the law

  535. and prophets

  536. was to bring out

  537. the full intent

  538. of the law.

  539. Not just

  540. external obedience.

  541. The scribes

  542. and the Pharisees

  543. were known

  544. for doing that

  545. very well,

  546. thank you very much.

  547. Jesus went

  548. from external

  549. obedience

  550. to addressing

  551. internal obedience

  552. as well.

  553. And so,

  554. in verses

  555. 21-48,

  556. He shows us

  557. how those

  558. who've been

  559. radically changed

  560. by grace

  561. live out

  562. the full intent

  563. of the law.

  564. And so,

  565. in verses

  566. 21-22,

  567. there are these

  568. six statements

  569. Jesus makes.

  570. You've heard it said,

  571. but I say.

  572. It's a huge

  573. claim of authority.

  574. Let me just

  575. clarify you

  576. what my word

  577. means.

  578. Here is

  579. God incarnate

  580. correcting

  581. misunderstandings

  582. of His word.

  583. I would have

  584. loved to have

  585. been there.

  586. I love having

  587. this at my hands

  588. and fingertips

  589. now.

  590. This is my king

  591. speaking to me.

  592. This is our king

  593. speaking to us.

  594. And He brings

  595. out the full intent.

  596. So,

  597. you've heard that

  598. this is said,

  599. those who murder,

  600. well,

  601. they're liable

  602. for judgment.

  603. But I say,

  604. if you get angry,

  605. you're liable

  606. for judgment.

  607. He goes from

  608. external to

  609. internal.

  610. Full obedience

  611. to the full

  612. intent of the law.

  613. You've heard it

  614. said that

  615. adultery is not

  616. okay.

  617. Agreed.

  618. but I say,

  619. even someone

  620. who lusts

  621. in their heart

  622. after a woman

  623. commits adultery

  624. in his heart.

  625. Full intent.

  626. Full obedience.

  627. Outer conformity.

  628. Inner conformity.

  629. He goes on to say

  630. some very

  631. strong things.

  632. You've heard that

  633. no default

  634. divorce is okay.

  635. But I say,

  636. do you realize

  637. what you're doing

  638. to people

  639. by doing that?

  640. 33 and 34,

  641. you've heard it said,

  642. don't swear falsely.

  643. Then He says,

  644. but I say,

  645. let your yes

  646. be yes

  647. and your no

  648. be no.

  649. Let's dive

  650. into that one

  651. when we come

  652. to it.

  653. 38 and 39,

  654. you've heard

  655. that it said,

  656. an eye for an eye

  657. and a tooth

  658. for a tooth.

  659. Lex talionis!

  660. But I say,

  661. do not resist

  662. the one

  663. who is evil.

  664. Wait,

  665. Jesus,

  666. are you telling me,

  667. are you telling me

  668. to enable bad people?

  669. Is that what

  670. you're telling me?

  671. We've got to find out

  672. what He means.

  673. We'll come back to that.

  674. 43 through 44,

  675. you've heard that

  676. it said,

  677. love your neighbor

  678. and hate your enemy,

  679. but I say,

  680. love your enemies.

  681. Radical

  682. kingdom

  683. living.

  684. Now,

  685. I'm the first

  686. to admit

  687. there's a lot

  688. to understand here.

  689. I've got a lot

  690. of studying to do.

  691. But what Jesus

  692. is showing us

  693. is that the full

  694. intent of the law

  695. makes a claim

  696. on all

  697. of who we are,

  698. external

  699. and internal.

  700. And we have

  701. a tendency

  702. of not going

  703. deep enough.

  704. Are you ready?

  705. Are you ready

  706. to wrestle

  707. with the words

  708. of our King?

  709. Are you ready

  710. to live for His

  711. kingdom on this planet?

  712. kingdom citizens

  713. live to fully

  714. obey

  715. the full intent

  716. of God's law.

  717. The third thing

  718. that we come across

  719. is in verses,

  720. chapter 6,

  721. verses 1 through 18.

  722. Kingdom citizens

  723. live for God,

  724. not man.

  725. there's a temptation

  726. we all face

  727. is to do

  728. our obedience,

  729. practice our righteousness

  730. for the eyes

  731. of men

  732. to show our

  733. obedience.

  734. And then it

  735. ceases to become

  736. obedience to God.

  737. It becomes

  738. something else.

  739. Jesus says,

  740. no,

  741. don't do that.

  742. Don't give

  743. so other people

  744. can see you.

  745. Don't pray

  746. so others

  747. can hear you.

  748. Don't fast

  749. so that other people

  750. know.

  751. Don't do that.

  752. No,

  753. you won't get

  754. a reward

  755. from your Father

  756. in Heaven

  757. if you do that.

  758. He tells us

  759. to give

  760. and to pray

  761. and to fast

  762. not for public eyes

  763. but for private eyes

  764. which reminds me

  765. of a Hall & Oates song.

  766. Private eyes,

  767. they're watching you.

  768. I used to build

  769. Legos to that.

  770. But the private eyes

  771. that Jesus is

  772. talking about

  773. is not the private eyes

  774. Hall & Oates

  775. we're singing about.

  776. If you look at

  777. chapter 6

  778. verses 3 and 4

  779. we're going to start

  780. seeing a pattern.

  781. But when you give

  782. to the needy

  783. do not let your

  784. left hand know

  785. what your right hand

  786. is doing.

  787. Do it in private

  788. so that your giving

  789. may be in secret

  790. and your Father

  791. who sees in secret

  792. will reward you.

  793. Do it for His eyes.

  794. The audience of one.

  795. Look at verse 6.

  796. But when you pray

  797. go into your room

  798. and shut the door

  799. and pray to your Father

  800. who is in secret

  801. and your Father

  802. who sees in secret

  803. will reward you.

  804. Audience of one.

  805. Look at verses 17 and 18.

  806. But when you fast

  807. anoint your head

  808. and wash your face

  809. that your fasting

  810. may not be seen by others

  811. but by your Father

  812. who is in secret

  813. and your Father

  814. who sees in secret

  815. will reward you.

  816. See a pattern?

  817. See repetition?

  818. Practice your righteousness

  819. for the audience

  820. of one.

  821. Your Father in heaven

  822. not for the eyes of man.

  823. Kingdom citizens

  824. live for God

  825. not for man.

  826. Chapter 6 verses 19-34

  827. Kingdom citizens

  828. live to serve God only

  829. and seek God first.

  830. Kingdom citizens

  831. have been radically changed

  832. and therefore

  833. our priorities

  834. have been radically changed.

  835. And do you see

  836. where Jesus goes

  837. in this section?

  838. Verse 19

  839. Do not lay up yourselves

  840. treasures on earth.

  841. Verse 24

  842. No one can serve

  843. two masters

  844. for either will hate

  845. the one and love the other

  846. or he will be devoted

  847. to the one

  848. and despise the other

  849. and then he brings it home.

  850. You cannot serve

  851. both God

  852. and money.

  853. We've been radically changed

  854. by God's grace

  855. and it radically changes

  856. who we serve.

  857. We don't serve money.

  858. We don't live for money.

  859. We live for our God.

  860. And so

  861. we use money

  862. as a means

  863. to serve Him.

  864. We don't use God

  865. as a way of serving money.

  866. It's called idolatry.

  867. Kingdom citizens

  868. only have one master.

  869. We prioritize God

  870. over money

  871. because God's changed us.

  872. Kingdom citizens

  873. not only serve God

  874. over money

  875. we prioritize God

  876. over our most basic needs.

  877. Don't be anxious.

  878. Anybody anxious in the room?

  879. Anybody anxious about their life?

  880. Anybody anxious

  881. about what they're going to wear

  882. what they're going to eat

  883. where they're going to live?

  884. Anybody.

  885. Anybody.

  886. Don't be anxious.

  887. Seek first

  888. God

  889. in His kingdom

  890. and He

  891. will take care

  892. of the rest.

  893. Trust Him.

  894. He's your heavenly Father.

  895. He knows your needs

  896. before you know your needs.

  897. Kingdom citizens

  898. are not anxious

  899. about their life

  900. because they seek

  901. first their Father

  902. who takes care

  903. of their life.

  904. Man,

  905. you know what I love

  906. about the Sermon on the Mount

  907. and this manifesto?

  908. Jesus gets right at it.

  909. He speaks to us.

  910. He speaks to where we live

  911. now.

  912. Kingdom Christians

  913. live to serve God

  914. over money

  915. and seek God

  916. before themselves.

  917. The fifth thing

  918. I want you to see

  919. is found in verses

  920. 1-12 of chapter 7.

  921. Kingdom citizens

  922. live to relate

  923. to others

  924. for the kingdom.

  925. Our relationships

  926. don't exist for us

  927. but ultimately

  928. we leverage

  929. our lives

  930. and our relationships

  931. for the kingdom.

  932. And so in verses 1-5

  933. we're told to

  934. get the log

  935. out of our own eye

  936. before we pull

  937. the speck

  938. out of our

  939. brothers.

  940. When we've been

  941. radically changed

  942. by God's grace

  943. it radically changes

  944. the way we relate

  945. to other people.

  946. And so

  947. instead of saying

  948. right there

  949. I see that

  950. speck

  951. there are

  952. three fingers

  953. pointing right back

  954. at me

  955. saying

  956. there's a gigantic

  957. log in your eye

  958. Salvati!

  959. And what Jesus

  960. is telling us

  961. to do is

  962. humble yourself.

  963. Live out

  964. the blessings.

  965. Be meek.

  966. See yourself

  967. as God sees you.

  968. Get the log

  969. out of your own eye.

  970. And then love you

  971. brother.

  972. In verse 6

  973. kingdom citizens

  974. exercise discernment

  975. with those

  976. who we talk

  977. to about the

  978. kingdom.

  979. Pigs,

  980. swine,

  981. what's he talking

  982. about?

  983. At a minimum

  984. he's calling us

  985. to be discerning

  986. of who we talk

  987. about Jesus

  988. with.

  989. Look at verse 12.

  990. Kingdom citizens

  991. fulfill the law

  992. by living

  993. by the golden rule.

  994. There's the golden rule!

  995. Right there.

  996. So whatever you wish

  997. that others would do

  998. to you

  999. do also to them

1000. for this is the law

  1001. and the prophets.

  1002. Fulfill the law!

  1003. Love everybody!

1004. This is the golden rule!

  1005. Jesus,

  1006. this is the second

  1007. commandment.

  1008. Love your neighbor

  1009. as yourself.

  1010. Did you notice

  1011. I skipped over

  1012. a spot?

  1013. Verses 7

  1014. through 11.

  1015. It's kind of,

  1016. you're kind of like,

  1017. what is that

  1018. doing there?

  1019. I mean,

  1020. he goes from

  1021. talking about

  1022. getting the log

1023. out of your own eye

  1024. and the speck

  1025. out of your brothers

  1026. and he says,

  1027. don't throw,

  1028. you know,

  1029. these wonderful,

  1030. valuable things

  1031. to pigs and swine

  1032. and then he says,

  1033. then he goes into

  1034. ask,

  1035. seek,

  1036. and knock

  1037. and then he goes

  1038. into saying,

  1039. live the golden rule

1040. and you're kind of like,

1041. why are you telling me

  1042. to pray

  1043. in the middle

  1044. of being

  1045. in these relationships

  1046. with other people

  1047. and chapter 6

  1048. he's already told me

  1049. to pray

  1050. as the Lord

  1051. prays,

  1052. the Lord's prayer

  1053. so why are we

  1054. going back

  1055. to prayer here?

  1056. here's why,

  1057. our relationships

  1058. with other people

  1059. are governed

  1060. by our relationship

  1061. with our Father

  1062. and so we ask,

  1063. seek,

  1064. and knock

  1065. our Father

  1066. for good things

  1067. related to our

  1068. relationships

  1069. with other people

  1070. I ask God

  1071. to help me

  1072. to live out

  1073. the golden rule

  1074. with this person

  1075. and with that person

  1076. at a minimum

  1077. we're to be asking

  1078. our Father

  1079. to help

  1080. live in relationship

  1081. to others

  1082. for the glory

  1083. of his name

  1084. and advancement

  1085. of his kingdom

  1086. kingdom citizens

  1087. live to relate

  1088. to others

  1089. for the kingdom

  1090. the last thing

1091. I want you to see

  1092. is chapter 7

  1093. verses 13

  1094. through 27

  1095. this is like

  1096. the finale

  1097. this is like

  1098. Jesus

  1099. sits you down

  1100. and he's like

  1101. alright

  1102. sign here please

  1103. commit

  1104. commit

  1105. and so in verses

  1106. 13 through 27

  1107. we

  1108. I'd summarize

  1109. that kingdom

  1110. citizens

  1111. live committed

  1112. to Christ's

  1113. kingdom

  1114. we live committed

  1115. and in this section

  1116. he contrasts

  1117. four things

  1118. he says

  1119. enter the narrow gate

  1120. don't go through

  1121. the wide gate

  1122. enter through

  1123. the narrow gate

  1124. the narrow gate

  1125. is going to lead

  1126. to a hard way

  1127. with a few people

  1128. but it leads

  1129. to life

  1130. and what Jesus

  1131. is calling us to

  1132. is

  1133. live it

  1134. live it out

  1135. don't go back

  1136. to the wide gate

  1137. don't go back

  1138. to the easy way

  1139. don't go back

  1140. to the mob

  1141. live for me

  1142. live this way

  1143. enter the narrow gate

  1144. and in 15 through 20

  1145. he tells us

  1146. commit to me

  1147. don't listen

  1148. to false prophets

  1149. listen to me

  1150. he compares

  1151. two trees

  1152. a healthy tree

  1153. and a diseased tree

  1154. a healthy tree

  1155. bears good fruit

  1156. a diseased tree

  1157. the ministry

  1158. of a false prophet

  1159. bears bad fruit

  1160. and if you eat

  1161. that fruit

  1162. not only are you

  1163. going to

  1164. get sick

  1165. it's going to have

  1166. an effect

  1167. on the body

  1168. commit to

  1169. discerning truth

  1170. from falsehood

  1171. commit to

  1172. eating

  1173. from the ministry

  1174. of a healthy tree

  1175. verses 21 through 23

  1176. oh this is such

  1177. a sober one

  1178. verse 21

  1179. not everyone

  1180. who says to me

  1181. Lord Lord

  1182. will enter the kingdom

  1183. of heaven

  1184. what

  1185. Lord Lord

  1186. have you said that

  1187. Lord

  1188. Lord Lord

  1189. Jesus gets at

  1190. something

  1191. verses 21

  1192. through 23

  1193. he's like

  1194. hey

  1195. commitment

  1196. doesn't

  1197. to me

  1198. does not

  1199. look like

  1200. a profession

  1201. and doing

  1202. these

  1203. awesome works

  1204. commitment

  1205. commitment

  1206. to me

  1207. looks like

  1208. living out

  1209. the will

  1210. of my father

  1211. day after day

  1212. not lip service

  1213. but life service

  1214. that's sobering

  1215. makes you ask

  1216. some hard questions

  1217. verses 24

  1218. through 27

  1219. Jesus

  1220. shares this

  1221. last contrast

  1222. last contrast

  1223. between foundations

  1224. he says

  1225. whoever hears

  1226. and does

  1227. my words

  1228. it's like

  1229. a wise man

  1230. who builds

  1231. his house

  1232. on a solid

  1233. foundation

  1234. of rock

  1235. build

  1236. your

  1237. life

  1238. on the rock

  1239. of Christ

  1240. not on the

  1241. shifting sands

  1242. of other

  1243. words

  1244. Jesus

  1245. Jesus

  1246. closes

  1247. the

  1248. manifesto

  1249. with that

  1250. called a

  1251. commitment

  1252. this

  1253. manifesto

  1254. is broken

  1255. into two

  1256. parts

  1257. who you

  1258. are

  1259. blessed

  1260. are

  1261. you

  1262. one

  1263. graced

  1264. by God

  1265. and then

  1266. he calls

  1267. us to

  1268. live it

  1269. out

  1270. in a

  1271. certain

  1272. way

  1273. counter

  1274. cultural

  1275. character

  1276. shows up

  1277. in a

  1278. counter

  1279. cultural

  1280. life

  1281. and as

  1282. we walk

  1283. this way

  1284. he proves

  1285. himself

  1286. faithful

  1287. can I call

  1288. you to

  1289. something

  1290. this morning

  1291. I know

  1292. you can't

  1293. say no

  1294. right now

  1295. let's

  1296. press

  1297. into

  1298. who we

  1299. are

  1300. right

  1301. now

  1302. let's

  1303. live out

  1304. what God

  1305. has already

  1306. called us

  1307. to be

  1308. kingdom

  1309. citizens

  1310. citizens

  1311. of

  1312. his

  1313. realm

  1314. of

  1315. his

  1316. reign

  1317. let's

  1318. live it

  1319. out

  1320. let's

  1321. live it

  1322. out

  1323. together

  1324. and so

  1325. I'd

  1326. like to

  1327. ask you

  1328. to start

  1329. praying

  1330. for

  1331. something

  1332. praying

  1333. for

  1334. three

  1335. things

  1336. in your

  1337. private

  1338. prayer life

  1339. when you

  1340. go into

  1341. your prayer

  1342. closet

  1343. to pray

  1344. to your

  1345. heavenly

  1346. father

  1347. in secret

  1348. would you

  1349. start praying

  1350. these three

  1351. things

  1352. something

  1353. like this

  1354. first

  1355. God

  1356. I am

  1357. totally

  1358. dependent

  1359. on you

  1360. to live

  1361. this

  1362. life

  1363. you have

  1364. called

  1365. me

  1366. to

  1367. it's

  1368. admitting

  1369. your

  1370. need

  1371. admitting

  1372. your

  1373. place

  1374. exercise

  1375. of

  1376. humility

  1377. I

  1378. need

  1379. you

  1380. I'm

  1381. dependent

  1382. on

  1383. you

  1384. second

  1385. God

  1386. will you

  1387. give me

  1388. the grace

  1389. to be

  1390. a faithful

  1391. citizen

  1392. of your

  1393. kingdom

  1394. today

  1395. give me

  1396. what I

  1397. need

  1398. today

  1399. God

  1400. help me

  1401. to live

  1402. this

  1403. out

  1404. for you

  1405. today

  1406. I

  1407. need

  1408. you

  1409. and you

  1410. have

  1411. what I

  1412. need

  1413. grace

  1414. me

  1415. and then

  1416. third

  1417. God

  1418. would you

  1419. make me

  1420. the

  1421. countercultural

  1422. Christian

  1423. you called

  1424. me to be

  1425. for the

  1426. glory

  1427. of your

  1428. name

  1429. would you

  1430. begin

  1431. praying

  1432. that

  1433. with me

  1434. the

  1435. sermon

  1436. on the

  1437. mount

  1438. is a

  1439. manifesto

  1440. it's a

  1441. manifesto

  1442. of our

  1443. king

  1444. to us

  1445. his

  1446. citizens

  1447. to live

  1448. for the

  1449. kingdom

  1450. on this

  1451. planet

  1452. and we

  1453. are to

  1454. live it

  1455. out in

  1456. every area

  1457. of our

  1458. life

  1459. let's pray

  1460. God in

  1461. heaven

  1462. we have

  1463. covered a

  1464. lot of

  1465. ground

  1466. here

  1467. I pray

  1468. that

  1469. Lord

  1470. you

  1471. would

  1472. do

  1473. a

  1474. work

  1475. in

  1476. us

  1477. in

  1478. which

  1479. we

  1480. recognize

  1481. that

  1482. we

  1483. need

  1484. you

  1485. that

  1486. you've

  1487. done

  1488. a

  1489. work

  1490. in

  1491. us

  1492. you've

  1493. calling

  1494. us

  1495. something

  1496. beyond

  1497. ourselves

  1498. and our

  1499. natural

  1500. abilities

  1501. and so

  1502. God

  1503. would you

  1504. grace

  1505. us

  1506. would you

  1507. pour out

  1508. your grace

  1509. would you

  1510. empower us

  1511. by your

  1512. spirit

  1513. would you

  1514. compel us

  1515. by your

  1516. words

  1517. God

  1518. would you

  1519. use

  1520. the

  1521. relationships

  1522. of

  1523. people

  1524. in this

  1525. room

  1526. to stir

  1527. us

  1528. up

  1529. to love

  1530. and good

  1531. deeds

  1532. to live

  1533. out

  1534. kingdom

  1535. principles

  1536. to live

  1537. out who

  1538. we are

  1539. together

  1540. here and

  1541. now

  1542. in

  1543. 2016

  1544. in

  1545. Kenosha

  1546. God

  1547. would you

  1548. make us

  1549. salt

  1550. would you

  1551. make us

  1552. light

  1553. God

  1554. would you

  1555. help us

  1556. to

  1557. live out

  1558. fully

  1559. the full

  1560. intent

  1561. of your

  1562. word

  1563. God

  1564. would you

  1565. do a

  1566. work in

  1567. us

  1568. we ask

  1569. in Jesus

  1570. name

  1571. Amen
