  1. Man, I am so parched and thirsty.

  2. Oh, look at water.

  3. Oh, that's satisfying.

  4. You know, all of us,

  5. everyone everywhere,

  6. is hungering and thirsting for something.

  7. All of us want to be satisfied with something.

  8. All of us want to be happy.

  9. Fifty years ago this past summer,

  10. the Rolling Stone released one of their hits,

  11. I Can't Get No.

  12. In the 1990s, U2 released The Joshua Tree.

  13. I'm a big U2 fan.

  14. My son and I were listening to The Joshua Tree

  15. in our truck this past week,

  16. and we were listening to the second song on the album

  17. very carefully.

  18. It says, the title is,

  19. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.

  20. So Bono sings this,

  21. I believe in the kingdom come

  22. when all the colors bleed into one.

  23. He's singing about Jesus.

  24. You broke the bonds and you loose the chains.

  25. You carried the cross, all my shame.

  26. You know I believe in.

  27. And he goes into the refrain,

  28. but I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

  29. We're all looking for something.

  30. We're all looking to be satisfied.

  31. We're all looking to be happy.

  32. Where are you looking for happiness?

  33. Where are you looking to be satisfied?

  34. What are you living for thinking that it's going to deliver?

  35. Make you happy.

  36. All of us want to be happy.

  37. And Jesus tells us in Matthew 5, 6,

  38. of where to find happiness.

  39. Of where to find blessing.

  40. Of where to find satisfaction.

  41. Would you turn with me to Matthew 5, 6.

  42. Jesus says,

  43. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  44. for they shall be satisfied.

  45. Hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  46. and you will be satisfied.

  47. Well, we're in the middle of,

  48. we just started actually,

  49. this series on the Sermon on the Mount.

  50. And I've been trying to frame it

  51. as the manifesto of King Jesus.

  52. And in this Sermon on the Mount,

  53. His manifesto,

  54. our King proclaims

  55. what is to be true

  56. of the citizens of His kingdom.

  57. Those are the Beatitudes.

  58. And then for the rest of the Sermon on the Mount,

  59. He explains how His citizens live it out.

  60. Live in light of the kingdom.

  61. Live in light of what He has done.

  62. The Beatitudes actually have a logical flow to them.

  63. It starts with declaring your spiritual bankruptcy.

  64. Seeing your debt to God.

  65. And then it moves to mourning the sin

  66. that puts you in debt.

  67. You see it as sin against God,

  68. and you grieve it because it grieves God.

  69. And then we move into being meek.

  70. When you realize your spiritual bankruptcy,

  71. when you realize that it is against God,

  72. and you mourn,

  73. you're going to find yourself in a meek place.

  74. You're going to see yourself as you are

  75. in relationship to God and to others.

  76. And for those who recognize,

  77. they declare their poverty,

  78. God meets them with grace.

  79. He pays their debt.

  80. With those who mourn,

  81. He comforts.

  82. With the meek,

  83. He says,

  84. I have a parcel of land for you in the new earth.

  85. It's yours.

  86. Bank on it.

  87. And here in 5.6,

  88. Jesus seems to turn a corner

  89. because it seems as to what He's saying

  90. is the spiritually bankrupt

  91. who've been,

  92. by the generosity of God,

  93. they've been made debt free.

  94. For those who are mourning their sin,

  95. for those who have become meek,

  96. they have an appetite

  97. for something quite unusual.

  98. They have a intense appetite.

  99. It's an unnatural appetite.

  100. It's even a counter-cultural kind of appetite.

  101. And what Jesus says is that

  102. these ones,

  103. they hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  104. If I can summarize Matthew 5.6

  105. in just four words,

  106. it would be this.

  107. Christ is our satisfaction.

  108. Christ is our satisfaction.

  109. And I want to help you to see that

  110. with two points.

  111. We seek,

  112. He satisfies.

  113. We seek,

  114. He satisfies.

  115. All point to Christ is our satisfaction.

  116. And so let's look at this first point.

  117. We seek.

  118. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst

  119. for righteousness.

  120. He's talking about an appetite.

  121. You're hungry for something.

  122. Our appetite as kingdom citizens

  123. is intense.

  124. So when Jesus says hunger and thirst

  125. for righteousness,

  126. obviously He's using a metaphor.

  127. Everyone can relate with it.

  128. We've all experienced hunger

  129. and we've all experienced thirst.

  130. thirst.

  131. And we hunger for food

  132. and we thirst for water

  133. and food and water

  134. are essential to living,

  135. aren't they?

  136. But we live in a first world context.

  137. And so our hungering

  138. is a kind of,

  139. I miss a meal

  140. and I'm feeling faint hunger.

  141. It's not that strong.

  142. I came home recently

  143. and I had skipped lunch

  144. and I made a major mistake.

  145. I walked in the kitchen

  146. and my family was there

  147. and I said,

  148. oh, I'm feeling so faint.

  149. And I have not lived it down.

  150. I come home

  151. and my kids are like,

  152. Dad, are you feeling faint?

  153. We miss a meal

  154. and we're hungry.

  155. We go without water

  156. for a little bit

  157. and we're thirsty.

  158. That's kind of

  159. first world hunger and thirst.

  160. Third world hunger and thirsting

  161. is something else.

  162. People in places

  163. where you're not sure

  164. you're going to eat next

  165. know a hunger

  166. that we don't know.

  167. They know a thirst

  168. we don't know.

  169. Our hunger is a hunger

  170. between, you know,

  171. what in the refrigerator

  172. am I going to eat?

  173. Third world hunger is

  174. there's nothing

  175. in the refrigerator to eat.

  176. First world thirsting is,

  177. man, I prefer my water cold.

  178. Third world thirst is,

  179. do we have clean water?

  180. I mean, the people in Flint

  181. are getting it right now.

  182. What Jesus is getting at

  183. is this third world hunger

  184. and thirst.

  185. It's intense.

  186. It's prioritizing.

  187. If you don't know

  188. where your next meal

  189. is coming from

  190. or where your next water

  191. is coming from,

  192. you're going to be

  193. prioritizing that

  194. pretty significantly,

  195. don't you think?

  196. You're going to be saying

  197. no to other things

  198. so that you can get that.

  199. What this is getting at

  200. is an intense

  201. spiritual appetite.

  202. This is a metaphor.

  203. And what Jesus is saying

  204. is that

  205. for those who

  206. He has called to Himself,

  207. they have a controlling appetite

  208. for righteousness.

  209. righteousness.

  210. It's intense.

  211. It prioritizes things.

  212. A Christian longs for,

  213. pursues,

  214. yearns after righteousness

  215. just as much as he craves

  216. food and water.

  217. Because righteousness

  218. is essential.

  219. It's a requirement

  220. of kingdom living.

  221. Those who are citizens

  222. of the kingdom,

  223. who have been saved

  224. by grace,

  225. they live

  226. for righteousness.

  227. It's the food

  228. and drink

  229. of a Christian.

  230. It shouldn't surprise us,

  231. John 4,

  232. Jesus says

  233. that His food

  234. is to do

  235. the will

  236. of the Father.

  237. Jesus,

  238. hunger and thirst

  239. after righteousness.

  240. And so this is a metaphor

  241. for an intense

  242. spiritual appetite.

  243. But it's also

  244. unnatural.

  245. This appetite

  246. may be intense,

  247. but it is unnatural.

  248. When you were born

  249. and you came out

  250. of your mama,

  251. you didn't come

  252. wanting

  253. this spiritual appetite.

  254. You weren't hungering

  255. for righteousness.

  256. In my devotions,

  257. I've been reading

  258. through the book

  259. of Romans.

  260. Romans.

  261. And yesterday,

  262. I came across this.

  263. Well,

  264. more like it came

  265. across me.

  266. This is Romans

    Romans 3:10–18

  267. chapter 3,

  268. verses 10 through 18.

  269. None is righteous.

  270. No, not one.

  271. No one understands.

  272. No one seeks for God.

  273. All have turned aside.

  274. Together,

  275. they have become worthless.

  276. No one does good.

  277. Not even one.

  278. He closes this little section

  279. in verse 18.

  280. There is no fear of God

  281. before their eyes.

  282. None of us.

  283. None of us

  284. have an appetite

  285. for godliness.

  286. None of us

  287. are born that way.

  288. None of us.

  289. It's unnatural

  290. for a human sinner

  291. to want righteousness.

  292. Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:1–3

  293. verses 1 through 3

  294. talk about

  295. we are

  296. dead in our trespasses

  297. and sins.

  298. Following the course

  299. of the world.

  300. Following the prince

  301. of the power of the air.

  302. Among whom we all

  303. once lived

  304. in the passions

  305. of our flesh.

  306. Carrying out

  307. the desires

  308. of the body

  309. and the mind.

  310. Like the rest

  311. of mankind.

  312. You know what sinners

  313. naturally crave?

  314. Unrighteousness.

  315. Apart from Christ

  316. what we want

  317. is to fulfill

  318. our sinful appetites.

  319. Our natural appetite

  320. is for things

  321. that grieve God

  322. not please God.

  323. Sinners crave sin.

  324. And so this

  325. hungering and thirsting

  326. for righteousness

  327. that Jesus

  328. is talking about

  329. what you've got

  330. to understand

  331. is you cannot

  332. produce that

  333. in yourself.

  334. You are so sinful

  335. I am so sinful

  336. we can't make

  337. ourselves want

  338. righteousness.

  339. But God can.

  340. And God does.

  341. God can cause

  342. a sinner

  343. to hunger

  344. and thirst

  345. for righteousness.

  346. How?

  347. By giving them

  348. a new heart

  349. with a new desire.

  350. And it's the

  351. sole domain

  352. of the regenerating

  353. work of the Holy Spirit.

  354. The appetite

  355. for righteousness

  356. is not natural.

  357. It's supernatural.

  358. It's a work of God.

  359. When God

  360. 1 Peter 1.3

  361. causes a sinner

  362. to be born again

  363. and He causes

  364. that born again

  365. by the Spirit

  366. John 3

  367. that sinner

  368. is giving

  369. a new appetite.

  370. A hunger

  371. and thirst

  372. for righteousness.

  373. A desire

  374. to please

  375. God.

  376. For a Christian

  377. and you know

  378. all this

  379. if you're a Christian

  380. your sinful desires

  381. don't go away.

  382. But you have

  383. a new affection.

  384. A new inclination.

  385. A desire

  386. to please God.

  387. So when we read

  388. Matthew 5.6

  389. you've got to realize

  390. that this appetite

  391. that Jesus is talking about

  392. is a grace given appetite.

  393. It's a spirit born appetite.

  394. No one seeks God

  395. unless God changes them.

  396. Our appetite

  397. for righteousness

  398. it's intense.

  399. It's not natural.

  400. It is supernatural.

  401. It's a work of God's grace in us.

  402. The next thing you need to know

  403. about this

  404. seeking of God

  405. we seek

  406. He satisfies

  407. that this appetite

  408. is a

  409. counter-cultural

  410. appetite.

  411. What we want

  412. is counter-cultural.

  413. It's a kingdom appetite.

  414. Let's say that all of us

  415. file out of here

  416. and we break up in twos

  417. and we're going to go out

  418. into downtown Kenosha

  419. and do an informal

  420. unofficial survey

  421. of people we come across

  422. and we're going to ask them

  423. two questions.

  424. The first question is this

  425. hey

  426. what makes a person happy?

  427. I'm guessing we're going to get

  428. all sorts of answers.

  429. Little kids say candy

  430. candy makes me happy.

  431. Other people say

  432. well

  433. the next iPhone

  434. will make me happy.

  435. I really like music.

  436. Music makes me happy.

  437. I love to paint.

  438. Painting makes me happy.

  439. Sex makes me happy.

  440. Vocational success

  441. makes me happy.

  442. Makes people happy.

  443. Financial independence

  444. having no worries

  445. that'll make everybody happy.

  446. Having the perfect body

  447. will make people happy.

  448. Making everyone happy

  449. will make me happy.

  450. Being in control

  451. will make me happy.

  452. Family and friends

  453. make me happy.

  454. The great outdoors

  455. makes me happy.

  456. And then we ask them

  457. the second question.

  458. Well what makes you happy?

  459. You know

  460. I'm guessing

  461. that if that person

  462. was really honest

  463. and if they've been around

  464. long enough

  465. we'd hear something like this.

  466. Well

  467. I'm not really sure.

  468. I still haven't found

  469. what I'm looking for.

  470. In Matthew 5-6

  471. Jesus tells us

  472. what leads to real happiness.

  473. It's a surprise.

  474. It's so counter cultural.

  475. I am guessing

  476. that when we're doing

  477. our informal survey together

  478. we're not going to hear

  479. many people say

  480. when we ask

  481. hey what makes you happy

  482. they're like

  483. righteousness makes me happy.

  484. Mmm

  485. I just love to say it.

  486. Do you know why?

  487. Because normal people

  488. don't think righteousness

  489. is happiness.

  490. Seriously.

  491. Normal people

  492. don't think

  493. that righteousness

  494. results in happiness.

  495. Normal people

  496. tend to think

  497. that righteousness

  498. leads to things

  499. like boredom.

  500. Being uptight.

  501. Getting constipated.

  502. Things like that.

  503. Feeling guilty.

  504. Churning your own butter.

  505. People think

  506. righteousness comes

  507. like when you have

  508. eight kids

  509. and you dress them all

  510. in different sizes

  511. of the same

  512. denim outfit.

  513. they think

  514. that's what

  515. righteousness is.

  516. Billy Joel gets at it.

  517. If that's what

  518. righteousness is

  519. I'd rather

  520. laugh with the sinners

  521. than cry with the saints.

  522. Seriously.

  523. Those who are righteous

  524. are serious

  525. party poopers.

  526. Let's stay away

  527. from them.

  528. Well brothers and sisters

  529. in Christ

  530. I'm here to tell you

  531. this morning

  532. that they got a point.

  533. A Christian

  534. who craves righteousness

  535. is anything

  536. but normal.

  537. A Christian

  538. is a sinner

  539. born again

  540. by the Holy Spirit.

  541. A new creation.

  542. A Christian

  543. a citizen of heaven

  544. is one who's been

  545. justified.

  546. Their sin

  547. put on Christ

  548. God's wrath

  549. poured out on Jesus

  550. for them.

  551. Christ's righteousness

  552. 33 years

  553. of perfect living

  554. imputed to the Christian

  555. the sinner

  556. in God's favor

  557. poured out for eternity

  558. on the sinner.

  559. Is that amazing?

  560. That's not normal.

  561. Justified

  562. set apart

  563. made holy

  564. transferred from the domain

  565. of darkness

  566. into the kingdom

  567. of the beloved son.

  568. Christian's not normal.

  569. The penalty of sin

  570. fully paid

  571. the power of sin

  572. is broken.

  573. They hold on to this promise

  574. that sin will one day

  575. be eradicated.

  576. They've been given

  577. the verbal deed

  578. that has been sealed

  579. by the blood of Jesus

  580. that they have a parcel

  581. a beautiful parcel

  582. in the new earth

  583. waiting for them.

  584. That's not normal.

  585. It's biblically normal

  586. but it's not normal

  587. to the world.

  588. Christian is anything

  589. but normal.

  590. Check it seriously.

  591. Seriously.

  592. You know what a Christian is?

  593. A Christian

  594. is a walking

  595. supernatural event

  596. of grace.

  597. That's what we are.

  598. A Christian

  599. is a miracle

  600. of regeneration

  601. wearing Adidas.

  602. That's what a Christian is.

  603. It's amazing

  604. what God has done.

  605. We're anything

  606. but normal.

  607. We are counter-cultural

  608. by God's grace.

  609. We've been made

  610. citizens of the kingdom

  611. of heaven

  612. and we have

  613. a spirit-born appetite

  614. for the things

  615. of God.

  616. Of course it's not normal.

  617. We stand out.

  618. It's counter-cultural.

  619. Don't let the world

  620. deny you.

  621. Don't let the world

  622. deny you

  623. what you're craving.

  624. Don't let the world

  625. give you

  626. some empty calories

  627. of worldly

  628. empty promises.

  629. Don't let that happen.

  630. Our spirit-born

  631. counter-cultural appetite

  632. picks purity

  633. over pornography.

  634. That's what we want.

  635. Purity.

  636. Our spirit-born

  637. counter-cultural appetite

  638. craves to be generous,

  639. not greedy.

  640. We want to be

  641. like our king.

  642. Our spirit-born

  643. counter-cultural hunger

  644. hungers to be honest

  645. and not to lie,

  646. like our king.

  647. Our spirit-born

  648. counter-cultural appetite

  649. wants to serve others,

  650. not to be served.

  651. It's very Christ-like.

  652. Our spirit-born

  653. counter-cultural appetite

  654. longs for God's glory,

  655. not our own.

  656. Our spirit-born

  657. counter-cultural appetite

  658. is hankering

  659. for world evangelization,

  660. not worldwide

  661. internet access.

  662. Hey, that would be great,

  663. but not as good

  664. as people from every tribe,

  665. tongue, and nation

  666. coming to bow

  667. at the knees

  668. and worship Jesus.

  669. as it were craving.

  670. Our spirit-born

  671. counter-cultural appetite

  672. craves above all else

  673. God's will.

  674. We want what God wants.

  675. This intense,

  676. supernatural,

  677. hungering,

  678. thirsting for righteousness

  679. is counter-cultural.

  680. Now, I'm guessing

  681. you're wondering

  682. something right now.

  683. What is this righteousness

  684. that Jesus is talking about?

  685. If it's all that,

  686. I want to know.

  687. Well, this appetite,

  688. our seeking,

  689. is for righteousness.

  690. And where I want

  691. to bring you

  692. is this is Christ-likeness

  693. that we're hungering for.

  694. Chances are

  695. that when you hear

  696. the word righteousness

  697. and if you've been raised

  698. in a Protestant church,

  699. you think in terms of

  700. Pauline righteousness.

  701. It's a legal righteousness,

  702. a positional righteousness

  703. that God imputes

  704. to a sinner

  705. like that

  706. when they believe.

  707. They're made

  708. legally righteous

  709. in God's sight.

  710. It's the righteousness

  711. of being justified.

  712. And though that is true

  713. of us in Christ,

  714. that's not the nuance

  715. of righteousness

  716. that Jesus is talking

  717. about here.

  718. Matthew,

  719. who wrote

  720. the Gospel of Matthew,

  721. uses righteousness

  722. in a different way.

  723. We see that

  724. in chapter 5,

  725. verse 10.

  726. Blessed are those

  727. who are persecuted

  728. for righteousness' sake.

  729. And then if you look

  730. at verse 20

  731. in chapter 5,

  732. we read,

  733. for I tell you,

  734. unless your righteousness

  735. exceeds that

  736. of the scribes

  737. and Pharisees,

  738. you will never enter

  739. the kingdom of heaven.

  740. Righteousness

  741. in the book of Matthew

  742. is describing

  743. a way of living.

  744. We're not talking

  745. about the legal

  746. positional righteousness

  747. of Paul,

  748. but a real-time

  749. practical righteousness

  750. that results

  751. from faith-filled

  752. decisions

  753. to do God's will.

  754. Righteousness

  755. is living in conformity

  756. to the will of God.

  757. That's what Jesus

  758. is getting at here.

  759. And what that requires

  760. is faith-filled obedience

  761. of both attitude,

  762. what's in you,

  763. and action.

  764. And so this righteousness

  765. that Jesus is talking

  766. about here

  767. is not a pharisaical

  768. righteousness.

  769. And a pharisaical

  770. righteousness

  771. was one that was

  772. self-dependent

  773. and aimed at

  774. pleasing others,

  775. impressing others.

  776. That's not what's

  777. going on here.

  778. The righteousness

  779. that Jesus

  780. is talking about

  781. is God-dependent

  782. and God-aimed.

  783. And Jesus

  784. is going to spell

  785. that out for us

  786. in the rest

  787. of the Sermon

  788. on the Mount,

  789. but I want to

  790. bring you

  791. one more step.

  792. I hate goats.

  793. I really hate them.

  794. I have had some

  795. less than pleasant

  796. experiences with goats.

  797. And as a result,

  798. I don't like goat meat.

  799. There's this

  800. goaty aftertaste

  801. and it just

  802. makes me sad.

  803. A couple years ago,

  804. some friends

  805. invited us over

  806. and they served us tacos.

  807. And as soon as

  808. I bit into the taco,

  809. I was like face-to-face

  810. with a goat in my mind.

  811. And I was like

  812. I was like face-to-face

  813. with a goat in my mind.

  814. I asked,

  815. is this,

  816. does this happen

  817. to be goat meat

  818. in this taco?

  819. And they're like,

  820. well, yes, of course.

  821. And then I said,

  822. will you pass the chips,

  823. please?

  824. Because I can't handle

  825. this anymore.

  826. That taco

  827. had a goaty flavor.

  828. the righteousness that we hunger and thirst for.

  829. And for some who come into contact with this kind of righteousness,

  830. that flavor is repulsive.

  831. But for those of us who've been born again,

  832. the righteousness that we long for

  833. has the savor of the Savior.

  834. the flavor of our founder,

  835. the tastiness of the one who was sinless.

  836. It's got the zing of the king of kings.

  837. It's got a strong aftertaste of the king of grace.

  838. And we love it.

  839. We can't get enough of it.

  840. The righteousness here

  841. is a Christ-like righteousness.

  842. And we see it played out

  843. all throughout the New Testament,

  844. all throughout the Gospels.

  845. You keep an eye on Jesus

  846. and you see righteousness incarnate.

  847. We want to be conformed to Him.

  848. We want to be conformed to the will of God.

  849. I'm not sure if you remember this being in your Bibles,

  850. but in Romans 8.29, we read,

  851. for those He foreknew,

  852. He predestined,

  853. He willed to be conformed

  854. to the image of His Son.

  855. And so if righteousness is conformed

  856. to the will of God,

  857. you better believe

  858. that we're going to have a hunger and thirst

  859. to be like Jesus.

  860. And so this righteousness

  861. is a Christ-like righteousness.

  862. We hunger and thirst for Christ-likeness.

  863. The Father made us alive by His Spirit

  864. so that we would live for Christ

  865. to be like Christ.

  866. That's what we want.

  867. That's what we're hungering and thirsting after.

  868. And so when we talk about

  869. we seek our appetite,

  870. it is an appetite that is intense.

  871. It is an appetite that's supernatural.

  872. It's born in us.

  873. It's an appetite that's counter-cultural.

  874. It's an appetite for Christ-likeness

  875. to be like Him.

  876. And so as I close this first point,

  877. I just want to ask you,

  878. do you have the hunger?

  879. Are you thirsty for Christ-likeness?

  880. Do you want to be like Him

  881. in every area of your life?

  882. Do you want it?

  883. Do you love others like Jesus loved others?

  884. Do you long for the Word of God

  885. as though it's pure spiritual milk?

  886. You can't live without it.

  887. And maybe you're settling for

  888. empty calories of worldly promises

  889. that don't satisfy.

  890. Shove those aside

  891. and turn to the One who satisfies.

  892. Now let's turn there now.

  893. We've talked about our appetite.

  894. We seek.

  895. Blessed are those who hunger

  896. and thirst for righteousness.

  897. Let's look to the One who satisfies.

  898. For they shall be satisfied.

  899. That word for in verse 6,

  900. blessed are those who hunger

  901. and thirst for righteousness.

  902. For they shall be satisfied.

  903. You see in all the other beatitudes.

  904. It signals the reason why.

  905. The reason why someone

  906. who hungers and thirsts

  907. for righteousness is happy,

  908. is blessed,

  909. it's because they know

  910. that they're going to be satisfied.

  911. They got the promise.

  912. And what you need to see here

  913. is that satisfaction

  914. is a satisfaction given by God.

  915. Look back at 5.6.

  916. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst

  917. for righteousness

  918. for they shall be satisfied.

  919. It's a passive verb.

  920. You know what that means?

  921. It means that the subject of the verse,

  922. those who hunger and thirst

  923. for righteousness,

  924. they don't satisfy themselves.

  925. They are satisfied by someone else.

  926. The subject is being acted upon.

  927. Who's the one doing the satisfying?

  928. God alone satisfies our craving

  929. for Christ-likeness.

  930. God satisfies.

  931. God satisfies.

  932. I'm not sure if you've figured this one out yet.

  933. Sin never satisfies.

  934. Christ always satisfies.

  935. And so, for the remainder of our time,

  936. I want to help you see

  937. how God satisfies

  938. a citizen of the kingdom of heaven

  939. with Christ

  940. three ways.

  941. Before I get to them,

  942. I want to just remind you

  943. that as kingdom citizens,

  944. we live in between

  945. the kingdom inaugurated

  946. with Jesus' first coming

  947. and the kingdom consummated

  948. when Jesus comes back

  949. and He cleans house

  950. and He makes all wrongs right.

  951. And so, these three ways

  952. that God will satisfy us with Christ,

  953. what you need to understand

  954. is that the first two

  955. deal with the present.

  956. A present satisfaction.

  957. It's partial.

  958. And the last one,

  959. the future satisfaction.

  960. That's going to be full and complete.

  961. So, the first way

  962. that God satisfies us in Christ,

  963. we've already talked about it this morning,

  964. God justifies us

  965. through the finished work of Jesus.

  966. I'm guessing that many of you

  967. have this anxious hunger

  968. for forgiveness,

  969. to know that you've been forgiven,

  970. to know that you're not condemned

  971. for your sin,

  972. and Jesus satisfies.

  973. The doctrine of justification

  974. helps us to be satisfied

  975. in the finished work of Christ,

  976. to rest in what He's done,

  977. to be content in His work

  978. on the cross on our behalf.

  979. Our sin,

  980. imputed to Christ,

  981. God's wrath,

  982. poured out in full on Jesus,

  983. and simultaneously,

  984. Christ's righteousness,

  985. His perfect living for 32 years,

  986. His perfect conformity

  987. to the will of God,

  988. that is imputed to us,

  989. and because it's imputed to us,

  990. what's poured out on our head

  991. is not wrath,

  992. but God's favor forever.

  993. Let that satisfy you.

  994. But it's a partial satisfaction

  995. because if you're like me,

  996. and I know you are in this area,

  997. though you're justified,

  998. you still sin.

  999. We are simultaneously justified

  1000. and sinners.

  1001. In other words,

1002. you have vying appetites within you.

  1003. There's something in you

1004. that wants to hunger and thirst

  1005. for ungodliness still,

1006. but there's something in you

  1007. born of the Spirit

  1008. that hungers and thirsts

  1009. for Christlikeness.

  1010. And so we're justified.

  1011. That is satisfying,

  1012. but it's partial

1013. because I'm still wrestling with sin.

1014. And so let me point you

  1015. to another way

  1016. that God satisfies us

  1017. in the present.

1018. Would you turn to Romans 13, 14?

  1019. We are legally righteous

  1020. in God's sight.

  1021. Thank God for Jesus.

1022. But we constantly fight our sin.

1023. And one of the ways

  1024. we fight our sin,

1025. we are shown in Romans 13, 14.

1026. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ

1027. and make no provision for the flesh

  1028. to satisfy its desires.

1029. Find your satisfaction in Jesus

1030. and it will crowd out desires for the flesh.

  1031. Christ justifies us

  1032. and Christ sanctifies us.

  1033. We dwell on Him.

1034. We find our savor in the Savior

1035. and it weakens the delight of sin.

1036. We say no to sin

1037. by being satisfied in Christ.

1038. By putting on the Lord Jesus Christ.

1039. This is what defines me.

  1040. Who defines me?

1041. This is the one I live for.

1042. This is the one that controls me.

1043. This is the one I want to please.

1044. If you have a sissy view of Jesus,

1045. you're going to have a hard time

  1046. fighting sin.

1047. But if you have a grand

1048. and glorious view of Jesus,

1049. if He just continues to ravish you,

  1050. like,

  1051. I can't believe Him.

  1052. He's awesome.

1053. And you dwell on that.

1054. And you put on the Lord Jesus Christ.

1055. It will weaken the desire for sin.

1056. God satisfies us in Christ.

  1057. He's justified us.

1058. God satisfies us in Christ.

  1059. His delight in us

1060. helps us to fight sin.

1061. Those are the two for the present.

1062. The last way that we find

  1063. our satisfaction,

1064. that God satisfies us in Christ,

  1065. it's a future satisfaction.

  1066. They shall be satisfied.

  1067. And this future satisfaction

1068. is our full and complete satisfaction.

  1069. When Jesus returns,

  1070. He said He would,

1071. we will receive glorified bodies

  1072. unencumbered by sin

1073. and we will see Him.

  1074. Faith turns to sight.

1075. One of the joys of having

  1076. your resurrected body

  1077. is resurrected to eyeballs

1078. that will see your Savior

  1079. and be with Him.

  1080. At that moment,

  1081. at that moment,

1082. you lay eyes on Him.

  1083. At that moment,

  1084. you're in His presence

1085. that you hear Him call your name.

  1086. At that moment,

1087. you're going to be satisfied.

  1088. There's going to be a contentment

  1089. that you've never had.

1090. It's going to be complete.

1091. It's going to be full.

1092. And it's going to be forever.

1093. Because you're going to be

  1094. in His presence forever.

1095. We will be with Him

  1096. completely satisfied

  1097. in His presence

  1098. for all times.

1099. So we have present satisfaction

  1100. justified.

  1101. We're being sanctified.

  1102. We're dwelling on Christ

1103. and we've got this promise

  1104. of a future satisfaction

  1105. of when we're actually

  1106. with Him.

1107. I hope that makes you happy.

  1108. I hope you realize

  1109. your blessing,

  1110. how good that is.

  1111. There's one last thing

  1112. I want to add.

  1113. This is a satisfaction

  1114. that's guaranteed.

1115. You can bank on it.

  1116. They shall be satisfied.

1117. Citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven,

  1118. your future satisfaction

  1119. is guaranteed

  1120. because God never lies.

  1121. Jesus is coming back

1122. and when He comes back,

  1123. you will experience

  1124. fullness and completeness

  1125. of satisfaction

  1126. in His presence.

1127. You will be completely satisfied

  1128. by Christ Himself

  1129. for eternity.

  1130. He is,

  1131. Jesus is,

  1132. your satisfaction.

  1133. And He is

  1134. your guarantee.

  1135. So be happy.

  1136. Fight sin

  1137. with joy

  1138. because Jesus

  1139. is your satisfaction.

  1140. We seek.

  1141. God satisfies.

  1142. Christ is

  1143. our satisfaction.

  1144. satisfaction.

  1145. A satisfaction

  1146. that is guaranteed.

1147. So let me just close

  1148. with this one question.

1149. Who are you hungry for?

  1150. Let's pray.

  1151. God, we trust You

  1152. and Your Word.

  1153. Jesus, thank You for

  1154. this word,

  1155. this verse.

  1156. we look to You,

  1157. Lord Jesus.

  1158. We look to You.

  1159. I pray for us,

  1160. Your people,

  1161. that You would

  1162. deepen in us

  1163. a hunger and thirst

  1164. for Christ-likeness

  1165. and that, God,

  1166. You would meet

  1167. that hunger,

  1168. You'd meet that thirst

1169. on this side of glory

  1170. that we'd find

  1171. satisfaction in Christ

  1172. but ultimately, God,

  1173. that we'd look forward

  1174. to being fully,

  1175. completely satisfied

  1176. when we see Him

  1177. face to face.

  1178. In Jesus' name,

  1179. Amen.

  1180. Amen.

  1181. Amen.

  1182. Amen.

  1183. Amen.

  1184. Amen.

  1185. Amen.

  1186. Amen.

  1187. Amen.

  1188. Amen.

  1189. Amen.

  1190. Amen.

  1191. Amen.

  1192. Amen.

  1193. Amen.

  1194. Amen.

  1195. Amen.

  1196. Amen.

  1197. Amen.

  1198. Amen.

  1199. Amen.

  1200. Amen.

  1201. Amen.

  1202. Amen.

  1203. Amen.

  1204. Amen.
