  1. He is risen.

  2. All right, by show of hands, who woke up and found an Easter basket with their name on it?

  3. Show of hands.

  4. All right.

  5. Who had candy?

  6. Candy in that vest?

  7. That's what I'm talking about.

  8. You know, yesterday, the Kenosha News had an article on the Easter egg hunt Library Square yesterday.

  9. And I was here preparing.

  10. I saw the whole thing.

  11. It was a mob.

  12. I guess there was a thousand participants.

  13. It was a mob.

  14. But one thing I noticed as I was peeking out the window, every little kid had their own basket.

  15. And they were putting all the eggs they could in their basket.

  16. All of their eggs were in one basket.

  17. If you're a believer here this morning, if you're a Christian, or if you're thinking about becoming a Christian, you've got to realize that Christians put all of their eggs in one basket.

  18. This is amazing.

  19. As Christians, we base our entire lives on this one historic claim.

  20. That Jesus Christ was raised bodily from the dead.

  21. That's what we base our lives on.

  22. The tomb is empty.

  23. He's alive.

  24. The amazing claim of the Christian faith is not just that the Messiah was crucified for sinners.

  25. The amazing claim is that He was raised from the dead and that He's alive today.

  26. He is risen.

  27. And so this morning, I want to help you to see this historic claim of the Christian faith that Jesus is alive.

  28. He's reigning and He's going to return.

  29. He's alive.

  30. So if you're new to this whole Christianity thing, or maybe you've been away for a while and you're coming back,

  31. you've got to understand that Christians are people of the book.

  32. We live under the book.

  33. We believe this book to be God's Word.

  34. And so we submit to it.

  35. We trust it.

  36. The New Testament starts with four books of the Bible.

  37. They're called Gospels.

  38. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  39. And as Christians, we believe that they're trustworthy historical accounts of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

  40. So if you're new to the Christian faith, what you need to understand is that the Gospels are basically historical biographies of the person of Jesus of Nazareth.

  41. Now, each Gospel is written for a particular audience.

  42. And so each Gospel has its own kind of style and flavor and emphasis.

  43. It's like four members of a barbershop quartet singing the same Gospel story, all in perfect harmony.

  44. And each Gospel closes with the same thing.

  45. He is risen.

  46. He is risen.

  47. He is risen.

  48. He is risen.

  49. He is risen.

  50. This morning, I want to turn to the book of Matthew.

  51. As a church, we've been camping out in the book of Matthew.

  52. We've been looking at the Sermon on the Mountain.

  53. We're skipping ahead today to the end of the Gospel of Matthew.

  54. I want to kind of walk you through the days leading up to Jesus' resurrection.

  55. And I want to do it in sports center fashion.

  56. Beep, beep, beep.

  57. Beep, beep, beep.

  58. Beep.

  59. I want to hit the highlights.

  60. And so we're going to hit the highlights from the Sunday before.

  61. We'll hit Thursday, Friday.

  62. We'll kind of wait through Saturday.

  63. And then Sunday hits.

  64. Beep, beep, beep.

  65. Beep, beep, beep.

  66. The greatest highlight ever.

  67. In Matthew 21, the Sunday before the resurrection.

  68. It's known as Palm Sunday.

  69. Jesus on a donkey enters into Jerusalem.

  70. And His disciples are laying cloaks down.

  71. They're putting palm leaves down.

  72. And as He's riding this humble donkey into Jerusalem, His peeps are there saying things like,

  73. Hosanna to the Son of David.

  74. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

  75. Hosanna in the highest.

  76. Which means, God saves.

  77. Salvation has come.

  78. So Jesus enters Jerusalem the Sunday before He's crucified.

  79. He goes into Jerusalem being praised.

  80. People are saying, you're the Messiah.

  81. You're the long-awaited Christ, the Son of David, who's come to Jerusalem to deliver His people from oppression.

  82. And so the mindset of the time, the Jews in Jerusalem, they were, Jerusalem was occupied by Rome.

  83. And so if you're a Jew living in Jerusalem and you saw Jesus coming in, you're thinking, is He the Messiah?

  84. I hope so.

  85. I hope He delivers us from the oppression of Rome.

  86. Jerusalem was the city of David, the center of Jewish political and religious activity.

  87. And Jerusalem was home to the Jewish temple where Jews believed God dwelt in their midst.

  88. And so that Sunday, Jesus did come to Jerusalem on a donkey.

  89. And He did come as the Messiah.

  90. He was the promised one.

  91. The long-awaited king, descendant of David.

  92. It's true.

  93. It was really Him.

  94. He came to deliver His people, but in a most unexpected way.

  95. His deliverance was not from the oppression of Rome.

  96. He came to deliver people from the oppression of sin.

  97. And His mighty act of deliverance was not an impressive flank from the south.

  98. His mighty act of deliverance was Him laying down His own life on the cross.

  99. Jesus entered Jerusalem to die on that Palm Sunday.

  100. Beep, beep, beep.

  101. Beep, beep, beep.

  102. We move to Thursday.

  103. Thursday of Holy Week was the day of preparing the Passover.

  104. And after night fell, Jesus and His disciples observed the Passover.

  105. It was a highly symbolic meal, recalling the time in Israel's ancient history

  106. when God delivered His people from the oppression of Egypt.

  107. Do you remember this?

  108. If you've seen the Prince of Egypt, Disney, maybe a little bit.

  109. What happened is that the people of God slaughtered lambs

  110. and wiped the blood of the lamb over the doorways of their homes

  111. so that the angel of death would pass over their homes.

  112. The lamb's blood delivered God's people from death.

  113. Does that ring a bell?

  114. So, this particular Thursday, the night before Jesus was crucified,

  115. Jesus is with His disciples.

  116. And by the way, He tells them at this point,

  117. one of you is going to betray me,

  118. the night before Judas had for 30 pieces of silver.

  119. Well, at this Passover meal, we see this in chapter 26, verses 26 and 27.

  120. During the Passover meal, Jesus institutes what's called the Lord's Supper.

  121. What He's doing is He's essentially saying this.

  122. It's a Passover meal.

  123. And He's saying this with all authority.

  124. Hey, from here on out, the Passover meal, it's going to point to me

  125. as the ultimate Passover lamb.

  126. The ultimate and final sacrifice to deliver God's people from their sin.

  127. That week before Jesus is crucified and raised, a lot goes on.

  128. Jesus institutes the Lord's Supper.

  129. And afterwards, His disciples sing a hymn.

  130. He tells them at this point, hey, you guys are going to get scattered tonight because of me.

  131. Peter, of course, says, not me.

  132. No, I will never fall away.

  133. I'm dramatic like Peter was dramatic.

  134. But Jesus says, yeah, you will.

  135. And He says something really interesting at this point.

  136. It's in chapter 26, 32.

  137. He's just told His disciples they're going to scatter.

  138. Then He says this, but after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.

  139. This isn't the first time Jesus spoke of His resurrection in the Gospel of Matthew.

  140. There are three other times before this.

  141. So they leave.

  142. They make their way to Gethsemane, which is at the foot of the Mount of Olives.

  143. And it's in Gethsemane that Jesus prays and He wrestles.

  144. Ask God for this cup to pass, but not His will, but God's will be done.

  145. And it was in Gethsemane after Jesus prays, a mob shows up.

  146. Led by Judas.

  147. A crowd of Jewish leaders.

  148. Armed.

  149. I'm not sure if you remember this, but in order to indicate to the mob who it was they were to arrest,

  150. Judas approaches Jesus and gives Him a kiss.

  151. Betrayed with a kiss.

  152. This is all according to God's plan, by the way.

  153. It's fulfilled everything, everything that God anticipated and set out.

  154. They arrest Jesus and it's here that Jesus is brought to the Sanhedrin to undergo His first trial.

  155. Now, if the word Sanhedrin seems foreign to your ears, it should.

  156. We don't use that every day.

  157. And what it was, it was a group of Jewish authorities who would pass judgment on things.

  158. A group of 70 men.

  159. And so Jesus is brought before the Sanhedrin and they're looking to charge Him so that they could kill Him.

  160. And so they actually got two of their own witnesses to try to make a case against Jesus,

  161. but their stories didn't corroborate.

  162. And so they're like, whatever, they can't trust them.

  163. And so Caiaphas, the high priest, finally and directly says to Jesus,

  164. are you the Christ?

  165. Are you the Son of God?

  166. And in 2664, Jesus says to Caiaphas, you have said so.

  167. And that would have been enough.

  168. He wouldn't have gotten charged.

  169. But then he goes on and says this,

  170. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of power

  171. and coming on the clouds of heaven.

  172. He's quoting Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  173. A prophecy of the Son of Man who would be fully God to come.

  174. Jesus is saying, I am.

  175. In chapter 2665, Caiaphas, upon hearing these, tears his ropes.

  176. Blasphemer!

  177. Turns to the Sanhedrin.

  178. What say you?

  179. You've heard it.

  180. You know what they say?

  181. He deserves death.

  182. He deserves death.

  183. Following that, Peter denies him three times.

  184. Beep, beep, beep.

  185. Beep, beep.

  186. Chapter 27.

  187. We go from Thursday night to Friday morning.

  188. And now Jesus experiences his second trial.

  189. Before the Roman governor, Pilate.

  190. You see, the Sanhedrin, though they had decided he deserved death,

  191. they did not have the authority to actually put him to death.

  192. Jerusalem was occupied by Rome.

  193. And Rome, in order to maintain ultimate control over the area,

  194. reserved judgment and death penalties for themselves.

  195. That decision was Roman jurisdiction.

  196. Which meant the Sanhedrin had to convince Pilate, the Roman governor,

  197. to agree with him that Jesus needed to be crucified.

  198. So they bring Jesus before Pilate in chapter 27, 11 through 14.

  199. Pilate asks Jesus directly,

  200. Are you the king of the Jews?

  201. Jesus says,

  202. You have said so.

  203. Then he's accused again by the chief priests and elders,

  204. to which Jesus says nothing,

  205. like a lamb before its shearers.

  206. And Pilate is amazed that he wouldn't say anything.

  207. This point in chapter 27, we come across this custom.

  208. And it was just strictly to get political points.

  209. And so what would happen is that on this holiday,

  210. when everyone came to Jerusalem,

  211. Pilate would set a prisoner free

  212. to just get political points.

  213. Keep everybody happy.

  214. And this time around,

  215. Pilate goes to the crowds with two options.

  216. He says,

  217. I'm going to set somebody free.

  218. You pick.

  219. Either Barabbas,

  220. who is a known robber and murderer,

  221. an insurrectionist,

  222. or Jesus,

  223. this one you call the Christ.

  224. Which one would you choose to release?

  225. Pilate didn't realize this,

  226. but the chief priests and elders

  227. had already persuaded the crowds

  228. to release Barabbas

  229. in order to destroy Jesus.

  230. You see that in chapter 27, verse 20.

  231. So when Pilate asked the crowd,

  232. Who do you want me to release to you?

  233. The crowd says,

  234. Barabbas!

  235. To which Pilate asks,

  236. So what should I do with Jesus, the Christ?

  237. To which the crowd says,

  238. Crucify Him!

  239. Less than a week earlier.

  240. Hosanna!

  241. Pilate responds by saying,

  242. What evil has He done?

  243. The crowd,

  244. Crucify Him!

  245. In chapter 27, verse 24,

  246. Pilate seeing that this is a no-win political situation.

  247. He does that infamous act.

  248. We all know it.

  249. Water,

  250. washing of his hands,

  251. and says,

  252. This man's blood

  253. is not on my head.

  254. I am innocent of this man's blood.

  255. To which the crowd responds,

  256. His blood be on us

  257. and our children.

  258. They had no idea

  259. that this was the ultimate Passover lamb

  260. whose blood would take away

  261. the sin of the world.

  262. They did not know that.

  263. Tremendously ironic.

  264. In 27, 26,

  265. Pilate releases Barabbas

  266. and sends Jesus over to Roman soldiers

  267. to whom He would be scourged.

  268. It's a device called

  269. a cat of nine tails,

  270. which is a whip with nine ends on it

  271. was used for scourging.

  272. And at the ends of the,

  273. at the very tail ends of the tips

  274. were pieces of bone and metal.

  275. And so what you,

  276. the technique was

  277. you whip and you drag.

  278. And you fillet people's backs.

  279. It's brutal.

  280. Jesus went,

  281. was scourged,

  282. spit upon,

  283. struck,

  284. mocked by Roman soldiers,

  285. led out to Golgotha,

  286. the place of the skull

  287. outside Jerusalem.

  288. And then there He was crucified,

  289. nailed to the cross.

  290. There was a sign over His head

  291. that read,

  292. this is Jesus,

  293. King of the Jews.

  294. Verse 37 of chapter 27.

  295. We read that there are two thieves

  296. that were crucified

  297. on either side of Him

  298. and that they were mocking Him.

  299. There were passerbys

  300. walking by,

  301. wagging their heads,

  302. saying,

  303. come down from the cross,

  304. deriding Him.

  305. The chief priests,

  306. scribes,

  307. and elders were there

  308. mocking Him as well.

  309. In verse 41,

  310. He saved others.

  311. He cannot save Himself.

  312. Let Him come down from the cross

  313. and we will believe Him.

  314. Let God deliver Him.

  315. Mockety,

  316. mockety,

  317. mock.

  318. They didn't think

  319. that He would or could.

  320. What they didn't realize

  321. was that what was happening here

  322. was all according to

  323. the glorious plan

  324. of the triune God

  325. who wanted to save sinners.

  326. This was all according to plan.

  327. God and His great Son

  328. had sent His Son

  329. for sinners to save.

  330. God had sent this Passover lamb

  331. to deliver people

  332. from their sin

  333. through His death.

  334. Beep, beep, beep.

  335. Beep, beep.

  336. In verse 45 of chapter 27,

  337. Jesus,

  338. it's noon,

  339. Jesus has been crucified,

  340. though He's not dead.

  341. He's hanging on the cross.

  342. At noon,

  343. darkness surrounds the land.

  344. It's God's judgment

  345. gathering over Jesus.

  346. His just wrath.

  347. At 3 o'clock that afternoon

  348. is the cry of dereliction.

  349. Jesus cries out,

  350. Eli, Eli,

  351. lame,

  352. sebectani,

  353. my God, my God,

  354. why have you forsaken me?

  355. It's at that moment,

  356. Isaiah 53, 6,

  357. God has laid on Jesus

  358. the sin of all

  359. who would believe in Him

  360. and He's pouring out

  361. His wrath on Him.

  362. The Son of God

  363. is forsaken

  364. by God the Father.

  365. There's still the Son,

  366. still the Father,

  367. but He's enduring

  368. the wrath

  369. meant for those

  370. sinners

  371. that would one day believe.

  372. In verse 50,

  373. Jesus yields up

  374. His Spirit.

  375. It's important to note,

  376. I made this point

  377. on Friday.

  378. He gave Himself.

  379. His life was not

  380. taken from Him.

  381. He voluntarily

  382. laid His life down.

  383. He gave Himself

  384. for you and for me.

  385. He gave Himself

  386. for sinners.

  387. It was a voluntary sacrifice.

  388. He was a substitute

  389. for sinners.

  390. And then there was

  391. an earthquake.

  392. Rock split.

  393. Verse 54,

  394. the centurion says,

  395. truly this was

  396. the Son of God.

  397. He's the Christ.

  398. He's the one.

  399. He is who He was

  400. claiming to be.

  401. So Jesus dies.

  402. Beep, beep, beep.

  403. Beep, beep.

  404. Friday evening,

  405. Joseph of Arimathea,

  406. who Luke tells us

  407. was a member

  408. of the Sanhedrin,

  409. but he did not,

  410. he did not

  411. consent to

  412. Jesus' crucifixion.

  413. Well, after Jesus dies,

  414. Joseph of Arimathea

  415. goes to Pilate

  416. and requests

  417. the body,

  418. the dead body

  419. of Jesus

  420. so he can bury Him.

  421. We see this

  422. in 27,

  423. 57 through 61.

  424. Pilate gives him

  425. permission to take

  426. the dead body

  427. of Jesus,

  428. brings it down,

  429. Joseph brings

  430. the dead body

  431. of Jesus

  432. to a tomb

  433. that was hewn

  434. out of rock

  435. for Joseph.

  436. And so,

  437. he puts Jesus'

  438. dead body

  439. in this tomb

  440. and that we read

  441. is that he

  442. rolled the stone

  443. in front of the tomb

  444. and the stone

  445. was a huge stone

  446. and it was moved

  447. by gravity

  448. and so the stone

  449. would sit up

  450. on a higher point

  451. in a little well

  452. and Joseph

  453. would have pushed it.

  454. I'm not sure

  455. if there's any

  456. other else

  457. to push it

  458. with him

  459. and then it

  460. would by gravity

  461. drop into another

  462. well in front

  463. of the tomb

  464. and it would

  465. close the tomb.

  466. Huge stone.

  467. Jesus'

  468. dead body

  469. has been placed

  470. inside the tomb,

  471. sealed,

  472. entrance,

  473. no way getting in,

  474. no way getting out.

  475. And in verse 61

  476. what we see

  477. is this.

  478. Mary Magdalene

  479. and the other Mary

  480. were there

  481. sitting opposite

  482. the tomb.

  483. They saw

  484. where Jesus'

  485. body was laid.

  486. They were there.

  487. They were there

  488. on that Friday night.

  489. They saw

  490. where the tomb was.

  491. Jesus'

  492. body placed

  493. in the tomb.

  494. He's dead.

  495. Stone rolled

  496. in the way.

  497. Mary and Mary

  498. see it.

  499. Night falls.

  500. Friday is done.

  501. Beep, beep, beep.

  502. Beep, beep.

  503. Beep.

  504. We move on

  505. to the next highlight.

  506. Saturday morning

  507. chapter 27

  508. verses 62

  509. and forward.

  510. The chief priests

  511. aren't done.

  512. The chief priests

  513. aren't done.

  514. They and the Pharisees

  515. go before Pilate

  516. to request

  517. a guard

  518. to be placed

  519. out in front

  520. of the tomb.

  521. A Roman guard.

  522. Why?

  523. Why would they do that?

  524. If you look at verse 63

  525. you see why.

  526. They request

  527. this guard

  528. saying

  529. sir we remember

  530. how that imposter

  531. said

  532. while he was still alive

  533. after three days

  534. I will rise.

  535. They knew

  536. what Jesus

  537. had said.

  538. They knew

  539. that he had prophesied

  540. his own resurrection.

  541. If you want to see

  542. where in Matthew

  543. Matthew 16

  544. 21

  545. Matthew 17

  546. 22

  547. through 23

  548. Matthew 20

  549. 17

  550. through 19

  551. and when we

  552. looked at

  553. Matthew 26

  554. 32

  555. these are all

  556. places where

  557. Jesus says

  558. I'm going to

  559. rise again.

  560. They knew it

  561. but you know what?

  562. They didn't think

  563. that he was going

  564. to rise again.

  565. They thought

  566. the disciples

  567. there was a possibility

  568. that the disciples

  569. would steal the body

  570. and propagate

  571. this rumor

  572. this untruth

  573. that he had been

  574. raised from the dead

  575. and it would be

  576. bad.

  577. Everyone thinks

  578. he's dead.

  579. Everyone thinks

  580. Jesus is dead.

  581. Pilate allows

  582. a Roman guard

  583. to be placed

  584. at the tomb.

  585. They go.

  586. They secure the tomb

  587. which means

  588. they put a

  589. seal on

  590. the stone

  591. in the tomb

  592. and they set

  593. a guard.

  594. This was all

  595. because the

  596. Jewish authorities

  597. of the time

  598. were afraid

  599. that the disciples

  600. were going to

  601. come back

  602. steal the body

  603. and say that

  604. he was raised

  605. from the dead.

  606. Beep, beep, beep.

  607. Beep, beep.

  608. Beep, beep.

  609. Chapter 28.

  610. The third day.

  611. The first day

  612. of the week.

  613. Sunday morning.

  614. The day after

  615. the Sabbath.

  616. Jews observed

  617. Sabbath on Saturday.

  618. Now after the

  619. Sabbath toward the

  620. dawn of the first

  621. day of the week

  622. Mary and Mary

  623. went to see

  624. the tomb.

  625. The same

  626. Mary and Mary

  627. that saw

  628. where the body

  629. of Jesus

  630. was laid.

  631. they go.

  632. Verse 2.

  633. There's a great

  634. earthquake.

  635. This is the

  636. second earthquake

  637. that has taken

  638. place in three

  639. days.

  640. Remember the

  641. first earthquake

  642. when Jesus

  643. gave up his

  644. spirit?

  645. The curtain

  646. at that moment

  647. was torn in

  648. two.

  649. God had made

  650. a way through

  651. the death of

  652. Jesus for

  653. sinners to come

  654. into the

  655. presence of

  656. a holy

  657. God.

  658. Earthquake!

  659. It's epic!

  660. And now

  661. the second

  662. earthquake.

  663. Empty

  664. tomb.

  665. Angel of

  666. Lord comes.

  667. Rolls back

  668. the stone

  669. and then

  670. sits on it.

  671. He wasn't

  672. sweating.

  673. In verse

  674. 3.

  675. His

  676. appearance

  677. was like

  678. lightning

  679. and his

  680. clothing

  681. white as

  682. snow.

  683. There was

  684. no mistaking

  685. who this

  686. being was.

  687. He was an

  688. angel of

  689. God.

  690. It makes

  691. your knees

  692. knock.

  693. And that's

  694. what we see

  695. happen with the

  696. Roman guards.

  697. They're trembling

  698. in verse 4.

  699. And became like

  700. dead men.

  701. I think they

  702. dropped.

  703. But this

  704. angel did not

  705. come to speak

  706. to these Roman

  707. guards.

  708. angels.

  709. He came to

  710. speak to

  711. Mary and

  712. Mary.

  713. By the way,

  714. these same

  715. Roman guards

  716. we read later

  717. in 28,

  718. 11 through

  719. 15,

  720. they were

  721. paid off

  722. by the

  723. Jewish

  724. authorities

  725. to not

  726. say what

  727. happened,

  728. but to

  729. actually say

  730. the disciples

  731. came and

  732. stole the

  733. body.

  734. I'll come

  735. back to

  736. that in a

  737. second.

  738. Well,

  739. this angel

  740. turns to

  741. the

  742. Marys

  743. and he

  744. says to

  745. them,

  746. don't be

  747. afraid for

  748. I know that

  749. you seek

  750. Jesus who

  751. was crucified.

  752. He is not

  753. here for

  754. he has

  755. risen.

  756. Just as

  757. he said,

  758. come see

  759. the place

  760. where he

  761. lies.

  762. Look for

  763. yourself,

  764. it's empty.

  765. Come on

  766. in,

  767. check it

  768. out.

  769. He's not

  770. here,

  771. he's been

  772. raised.

  773. My mind

  774. goes like

  775. this,

  776. what's going

  777. on in

  778. heaven at

  779. this point?

  780. What's

  781. going on?

  782. What is

  783. going on?

  784. I think

  785. there's

  786. already

  787. trumpets

  788. blazing

  789. and great

  790. rejoicing

  791. because

  792. Jesus

  793. has

  794. risen

  795. from the

  796. dead.

  797. The

  798. angel

  799. says

  800. go

  801. tell

  802. disciples

  803. that

  804. he's

  805. risen

  806. from

  807. the

  808. dead

  809. and

  810. behold

  811. he's

  812. going

  813. before

  814. you

  815. to

  816. Galilee

  817. like

  818. he said

  819. in

  820. 2632.

  821. There

  822. you will

  823. see

  824. him.

  825. so

  826. these

  827. ladies

  828. quickly

  829. go

  830. from

  831. the

  832. tomb

  833. in

  834. verse

  835. 8

  836. and

  837. they

  838. have

  839. this

  840. mixture

  841. of

  842. fear

  843. and

  844. great

  845. joy.

  846. I

  847. think

  848. we

  849. all

  850. know

  851. what

  852. that

  853. is.

  854. And

  855. behold

  856. Jesus

  857. meets

  858. them

  859. on

  860. the

  861. way

  862. and

  863. says

  864. greetings

  865. they

  866. drop

  867. at

  868. his

  869. feet

  870. and

  871. worship

  872. him.

  873. Eyewitness

  874. presence

  875. of the

  876. risen

  877. Christ

  878. and

  879. they

  880. drop

  881. at

  882. his

  883. feet

  884. and

  885. Jesus

  886. says

  887. them

  888. do

  889. not

  890. be

  891. afraid

  892. go

  893. and

  894. tell

  895. my

  896. brothers

  897. to

  898. go

  899. to

  900. Galilee

  901. and

  902. there

  903. they

  904. will

  905. see

  906. me.

  907. Eyewitnesses.

  908. These

  909. women are

  910. the first

  911. eyewitnesses

  912. to see

  913. the risen

  914. Christ.

  915. And

  916. then

  917. what

  918. we

  919. see

  920. in

  921. the

  922. rest

  923. of

  924. the

  925. New

  926. Testament

  927. Luke

  928. 24

  929. John

  930. 20

  931. and

  932. 21

  933. 1 Corinthians

  934. 15

  935. Acts

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  936. chapter

  937. 9

  938. we

  939. see

  940. account

  941. after

  942. account

  943. of

  944. eyewitnesses

  945. to

  946. the

  947. resurrected

  948. Jesus.

  949. Do you

  950. know what

  951. the New

  952. Testament

  953. says

  954. about

  955. Jesus?

  956. From

  957. Matthew

  958. to

  959. Revelation

  960. without

  961. reservation

  962. without

  963. apology

  964. the

  965. New

  966. Testament

  967. proclaims

  968. that the

  969. Messiah

  970. Jesus

  971. was not

  972. only

  973. crucified

  974. not only

  975. was he

  976. buried

  977. but he

  978. was raised

  979. from the

  980. dead.

  981. That's the

  982. overwhelming

  983. witness of

  984. the New

  985. Testament.

  986. He's

  987. alive.

  988. He's

  989. risen.

  990. He's

  991. alive

  992. today.

  993. He's

  994. alive

  995. now.

  996. And

  997. this is

  998. what I

  999. want to

  1000. impress

  1001. upon you.

  1002. I

  1003. want to

  1004. ask you

  1005. a question.

  1006. Do

  1007. you

  1008. believe

  1009. that

  1010. he's

  1011. been

  1012. raised

  1013. from

  1014. the

  1015. dead?

  1016. Do

  1017. you

  1018. believe

  1019. that

  1020. the

  1021. resurrection

  1022. of

  1023. Jesus

  1024. Christ

  1025. from

  1026. the

  1027. dead

  1028. is

  1029. the

  1030. linchpin

  1031. of the

  1032. Christian

  1033. faith.

  1034. No

  1035. resurrection,

  1036. no

  1037. Christianity,

  1038. no

  1039. resurrection,

  1040. no

  1041. salvation.

  1042. Now there

  1043. are those

  1044. people who

  1045. say that

  1046. the historic

  1047. bodily

  1048. resurrection

  1049. of Jesus

  1050. Christ

  1051. didn't

  1052. happen.

  1053. They'll

  1054. say things

  1055. like this.

  1056. Jesus

  1057. wasn't

  1058. quite dead

  1059. on the

  1060. cross.

  1061. He was

  1062. taken

  1063. down.

  1064. He was

  1065. put into

  1066. the tomb

  1067. of

  1068. Joseph.

  1069. And in

  1070. that cool

  1071. place,

  1072. he revived.

  1073. Possible,

  1074. but it's

  1075. hard to

  1076. fathom,

  1077. given that

  1078. Jesus has

  1079. probably gone

  1080. through shock,

  1081. lost a ton

  1082. of blood

  1083. through the

  1084. scourging,

  1085. nails of

  1086. crown of

  1087. thorns,

  1088. nails in

  1089. his arms,

  1090. in his wrists,

  1091. in his feet,

  1092. piercing on

  1093. his side.

  1094. The guy's

  1095. got to have

  1096. gone through

  1097. shock.

  1098. And so

  1099. you're telling

  1100. me that he's

  1101. going to be

  1102. placed in the

  1103. tomb,

  1104. revive,

  1105. and then

  1106. find a

  1107. way within

  1108. his strength

  1109. to move

  1110. the tomb

  1111. and then

  1112. somehow sneak

  1113. by the

  1114. Roman guard

  1115. without being

  1116. detected.

  1117. I don't

  1118. think so

  1119. either.

  1120. There's a

  1121. better

  1122. explanation.

  1123. Some would

  1124. say the

  1125. disciples

  1126. hallucinated,

  1127. that they

  1128. wanted to

  1129. believe that

  1130. Jesus was

  1131. alive so

  1132. much that

  1133. they actually

  1134. thought that

  1135. they saw

  1136. him.

  1137. It was a

  1138. group

  1139. hallucination.

  1140. Interesting that

  1141. they all had

  1142. the same

  1143. one.

  1144. Tough to

  1145. believe.

  1146. There's another

  1147. theory that

  1148. says the

  1149. disciples went

  1150. to the wrong

  1151. tomb.

  1152. They just

  1153. got the

  1154. wrong

  1155. address.

  1156. You just

  1157. need to

  1158. produce a

  1159. body at

  1160. that point.

  1161. Oh, you

  1162. went to the

  1163. wrong tomb.

  1164. Here's the

  1165. dead body.

  1166. Here's the

  1167. right tomb.

  1168. And Mary

  1169. and Mary

  1170. being at

  1171. the tomb

  1172. of Joseph

  1173. of Arimathea

  1174. beforehand,

  1175. that discounts

  1176. that.

  1177. But what

  1178. about the

  1179. disciples

  1180. stealing his

  1181. body?

  1182. The very

  1183. thing that

  1184. the Jewish

  1185. authorities were

  1186. fearful of.

  1187. Could they

  1188. have done

  1189. that?

  1190. The best

  1191. explanation for

  1192. the empty

  1193. tomb is that

  1194. Jesus was

  1195. miraculously

  1196. raised from

  1197. the dead.

  1198. here's how

  1199. you counter

  1200. the claim

  1201. about

  1202. the

  1203. disciple

  1204. stealing

  1205. his

  1206. body.

  1207. Did you

  1208. know that

  1209. ten of the

  1210. eleven

  1211. disciples,

  1212. after Jesus'

  1213. death and

  1214. resurrection,

  1215. they were

  1216. radically

  1217. changed

  1218. people?

  1219. Remember

  1220. what happened

  1221. in Gethsemane?

  1222. They scattered.

  1223. They split

  1224. on them

  1225. like cowards.

  1226. And after

  1227. the resurrection,

  1228. they proclaim

  1229. him like

  1230. courageous

  1231. lions.

  1232. And ten

  1233. of eleven

  1234. go to

  1235. martyrs'

  1236. deaths,

  1237. not only

  1238. proclaiming

  1239. Messiah

  1240. crucified,

  1241. but Messiah

  1242. raised from

  1243. the dead.

  1244. They had

  1245. seen him.

  1246. Now let me

  1247. ask you this.

  1248. If they

  1249. had stolen

  1250. his body

  1251. from the

  1252. grave,

  1253. from the

  1254. tomb,

  1255. how could

  1256. they die

  1257. for that?

  1258. How could

  1259. someone die

  1260. for something

  1261. that they

  1262. know is a

  1263. lie?

  1264. You know

  1265. what the

  1266. better

  1267. explanation

  1268. is?

  1269. He was

  1270. raised from

  1271. the dead.

  1272. And they

  1273. saw him

  1274. with their

  1275. own eyes.

  1276. And it

  1277. changed them

  1278. forever.

  1279. And they

  1280. went proclaiming

  1281. the Messiah

  1282. crucified,

  1283. raised from

  1284. the dead,

  1285. and I don't

  1286. care what

  1287. you do to

  1288. me.

  1289. I don't

  1290. care what

  1291. you do to

  1292. me.

  1293. I don't

  1294. care what

  1295. you do to

  1296. do to

  1297. the

  1298. best

  1299. explanation

  1300. for the

  1301. empty tomb

  1302. is that

  1303. Jesus was

  1304. actually

  1305. raised from

  1306. the dead.

  1307. Do you

  1308. believe that

  1309. Jesus was

  1310. raised from

  1311. the dead?

  1312. Do you

  1313. believe it

  1314. was a

  1315. historic

  1316. event in

  1317. space and

  1318. time?

  1319. Do you

  1320. believe it

  1321. really

  1322. happened?

  1323. The

  1324. resurrection

  1325. validates who

  1326. Jesus claimed

  1327. to be.

  1328. Paul in

  1329. Romans 1

  1330. says the

  1331. resurrection

  1332. declares that

  1333. he's the

  1334. son of

  1335. God.

  1336. King of

  1337. kings,

  1338. Lord of

  1339. lords,

  1340. overall,

  1341. all

  1342. authority.

  1343. The

  1344. crucified

  1345. and risen

  1346. Messiah,

  1347. God in

  1348. the flesh,

  1349. raised,

  1350. risen,

  1351. reigning.

  1352. It also

  1353. goes to

  1354. Maun.

  1355. If he

  1356. said he

  1357. was going

  1358. to die

  1359. in the

  1360. hands of

  1361. these people

  1362. and then

  1363. be raised

  1364. three days

  1365. later,

  1366. and if it

  1367. was true,

  1368. then I

  1369. wonder what

  1370. else he

  1371. said.

  1372. And whether

  1373. that's true,

  1374. like what he

  1375. said about

  1376. himself,

  1377. like what he

  1378. said about

  1379. our nature

  1380. as human

  1381. beings,

  1382. that we

  1383. need a

  1384. savior,

  1385. and what

  1386. about is

  1387. going to

  1388. happen in

  1389. the future.

  1390. It adds

  1391. validity to

  1392. it all.

  1393. The

  1394. resurrection

  1395. validates who

  1396. Jesus claimed

  1397. to be and

  1398. what he

  1399. said.

  1400. The second

  1401. thing coming

  1402. out of this,

  1403. the resurrection

  1404. verifies that

  1405. the payment that

  1406. Jesus made

  1407. for sin on

  1408. Friday,

  1409. cleared on

  1410. Sunday.

  1411. You ever

  1412. make a

  1413. purchase and

  1414. you're looking

  1415. at your

  1416. kind of bank

  1417. app and

  1418. you see

  1419. something's

  1420. pending?

  1421. Saturday was

  1422. like pending

  1423. payment,

  1424. and Sunday

  1425. it cleared.

  1426. the payment

  1427. that Jesus

  1428. made for sin,

  1429. he bore God's

  1430. wrath on

  1431. Friday when

  1432. he was raised

  1433. from the dead

  1434. on Sunday.

  1435. It's the

  1436. declaration,

  1437. paid in full,

  1438. and it

  1439. cleared.

  1440. It cleared

  1441. for you,

  1442. it cleared

  1443. for me.

  1444. Those who

  1445. trust in

  1446. Christ are

  1447. confident that

  1448. Christ's payment

  1449. for their sin

  1450. paid for their

  1451. sin in full.

  1452. No more

  1453. wrath.

  1454. The

  1455. resurrection

  1456. is a

  1457. stamp that

  1458. verifies that.

  1459. Payment

  1460. accepted.

  1461. The

  1462. resurrection

  1463. also provides

  1464. power for

  1465. Christians over

  1466. sin.

  1467. Just really

  1468. brief,

  1469. when a

  1470. sinner

  1471. believes in

  1472. Jesus for

  1473. the first

  1474. time,

  1475. Romans 6

  1476. tells us

  1477. they're united

  1478. to Christ

  1479. in his

  1480. death and

  1481. resurrection.

  1482. They're

  1483. dead,

  1484. they're dead

  1485. to the

  1486. penalty of

  1487. sin,

  1488. and that

  1489. they're alive

  1490. to God

  1491. with resurrection

  1492. power.

  1493. So you

  1494. know what

  1495. this means

  1496. for us?

  1497. Brother and

  1498. sister in

  1499. Christ.

  1500. Okay,

  1501. when I was

  1502. in high

  1503. school,

  1504. I worked

  1505. for a guy,

  1506. we built

  1507. decks,

  1508. and we

  1509. would work

  1510. all day,

  1511. and then we

  1512. would go

  1513. back to his

  1514. house,

  1515. single guy,

  1516. and then I

  1517. would like

  1518. walk in,

  1519. and he would

  1520. like tackle

  1521. me,

  1522. and we

  1523. would like

  1524. wrestle all

  1525. through his

  1526. house,

  1527. going over

  1528. all sorts of

  1529. furniture,

  1530. and we would

  1531. get each other

  1532. in these

  1533. submission holds,

  1534. waiting for

  1535. one of us to

  1536. tap out.

  1537. it happened

  1538. like every

  1539. day.

  1540. I got

  1541. tough,

  1542. sort of,

  1543. but Christian,

  1544. you might be

  1545. sitting here,

  1546. and there's

  1547. some sin

  1548. that's got

  1549. this submission

  1550. hold over

  1551. your life.

  1552. Do you know

  1553. what you say

  1554. to it?

  1555. Christ

  1556. was raised

  1557. from the

  1558. dead.

  1559. The next

  1560. time you are

  1561. tempted,

  1562. you know

  1563. what you say?

  1564. Jesus was

  1565. raised from

  1566. the dead,

  1567. and I've

  1568. been placed

  1569. into Christ,

  1570. I've been

  1571. placed into

  1572. that power,

  1573. so I can

  1574. say no.

  1575. The

  1576. resurrection

  1577. of Christ

  1578. provides

  1579. sin-breaking

  1580. power for

  1581. Christians,

  1582. and if you're

  1583. a non-Christian

  1584. here,

  1585. and you want

  1586. to be set

  1587. free from

  1588. the power

  1589. of sin,

  1590. you go to

  1591. Jesus.

  1592. He paid

  1593. the penalty

  1594. and broke

  1595. the power,

  1596. but the

  1597. last,

  1598. the last

  1599. piece

  1600. of this

  1601. resurrection

  1602. of Christ

  1603. that makes

  1604. a difference

  1605. in our

  1606. life,

  1607. it gives

  1608. us hope

  1609. beyond the

  1610. grave.

  1611. Jesus'

  1612. resurrection

  1613. from the

  1614. dead was

  1615. his decisive

  1616. victory over

  1617. death.

  1618. Not only did

  1619. he conquer

  1620. sin,

  1621. he conquered

  1622. death.

  1623. And so

  1624. for those

  1625. of us who

  1626. believe in

  1627. Jesus,

  1628. we have

  1629. this confidence

  1630. that we

  1631. too will be

  1632. raised as

  1633. he has

  1634. been raised.

  1635. In

  1636. John 11,

  1637. Jesus says

  1638. this thing

  1639. to Martha,

  1640. the sister

  1641. of Lazarus,

  1642. who was a

  1643. bit of a

  1644. pit bull.

  1645. he says

  1646. to her,

  1647. I am the

  1648. resurrection

  1649. and the

  1650. life.

  1651. Whoever,

  1652. though he

  1653. die,

  1654. yet shall

  1655. he live.

  1656. Whoever

  1657. believes me,

  1658. though he

  1659. die,

  1660. yet shall

  1661. he live.

  1662. Do you

  1663. believe this?

  1664. You see,

  1665. Jesus'

  1666. own death

  1667. and resurrection

  1668. is the

  1669. grounds for

  1670. our confidence

  1671. that we

  1672. too will be

  1673. raised from

  1674. the dead.

  1675. So you know

  1676. what that

  1677. means?

  1678. When you think

  1679. about your own

  1680. death,

  1681. and I know

  1682. you do,

  1683. when you

  1684. think about

  1685. your own

  1686. death,

  1687. here's how

  1688. you need

  1689. to think

  1690. about it.

  1691. Your own

  1692. death is

  1693. like a

  1694. short,

  1695. dark

  1696. hallway

  1697. that leads

  1698. to this

  1699. bright

  1700. place

  1701. where your

  1702. resurrected

  1703. king

  1704. awaits you.

  1705. That's all

  1706. that it is.

  1707. That's all

  1708. that it is.

  1709. In

  1710. closing,

  1711. I want to

  1712. ask you two

  1713. questions this

  1714. morning.

  1715. Thank you.

  1716. First one is

  1717. simple.

  1718. Did the

  1719. resurrection

  1720. of Jesus

  1721. Christ

  1722. really happen?

  1723. Did it?

  1724. If you're

  1725. saying no,

  1726. eat,

  1727. drink,

  1728. and be

  1729. merry,

  1730. for there's

  1731. nothing else.

  1732. But are you

  1733. saying no

  1734. because you

  1735. don't actually

  1736. want to deal

  1737. with the

  1738. information?

  1739. Don't say

  1740. no because

  1741. of that.

  1742. But if you

  1743. say yes,

  1744. yes,

  1745. I believe

  1746. it.

  1747. I believe

  1748. it happened.

  1749. Then you

  1750. need to go

  1751. on to the

  1752. second question.

  1753. And the

  1754. second question

  1755. is this.

  1756. If the

  1757. resurrection

  1758. of Jesus

  1759. Christ from

  1760. the grave

  1761. actually

  1762. happened and

  1763. it declares

  1764. him to be

  1765. the son of

  1766. God,

  1767. Lord of

  1768. lords,

  1769. king of

  1770. kings,

  1771. he's got

  1772. authority over

  1773. all things,

  1774. then the

  1775. question becomes

  1776. have you

  1777. submitted

  1778. yourself to

  1779. him?

  1780. Have you

  1781. bowed your

  1782. knee to

  1783. the risen

  1784. king?

  1785. Have you

  1786. put all

  1787. of your

  1788. eggs in

  1789. his

  1790. basket?

  1791. He is

  1792. risen.

  1793. He is

  1794. reigning.

  1795. And one day

  1796. he's going to

  1797. return.

  1798. And we rejoice

  1799. in it all.

  1800. Let's pray.

  1801. Lord Jesus,

  1802. there is no

  1803. one like

  1804. you.

  1805. You are our

  1806. risen king

  1807. and we

  1808. gladly declare

  1809. it and

  1810. proclaim it.

  1811. And so we're

  1812. going to sing

  1813. to you now

  1814. and we know

  1815. that you hear

  1816. us.

  1817. You are the

  1818. risen one.

  1819. You are the

  1820. king and we

  1821. will crown you

  1822. with many

  1823. crowns.

  1824. It's in your

  1825. name we pray.

  1826. Amen.

  1827. Amen.

  1828. Amen.

  1829. Amen.
