  1. So it's just a real joy to be here this morning.

  2. And if you have your Bible, if you want to turn to Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  3. Romans is in the back third of the Bible, right after Acts and all the Gospels.

  4. And we're going to be looking at chapter 8.

  5. And this morning, I really hope that the Word this morning will encourage you.

  6. You know, it doesn't take much to just look around our lives and our community

  7. and our state and our nation, the world,

  8. and to see that there's a lot of things that could make you discouraged.

  9. There's a lot of things you could be thinking about that would leave you discouraged

  10. and discontent and sad and wondering whether there's hope for the future.

  11. And I just so appreciate some of the songs we sang this morning

  12. that pointed us away from that to what we're going to be focusing on this morning.

  13. Because I want to encourage you with this one key truth that Paul has for us in Romans 8,

  14. which is God is for us in Jesus.

  15. And I know that if you've been to church for any amount of time,

  16. if you've read your Bible at all, that sounds familiar and you know it.

  17. But when I was in seminary, there was a counseling professor

  18. who pulled a hundred students aside.

  19. These are students who want to go on and do counseling

  20. and be pastors and be missionaries.

  21. And she asked them one simple question.

  22. Do you believe that on your best day or your worst day

  23. that God is a hundred percent for you only because of Jesus?

  24. Do you believe that with a hundred percent certainty?

  25. And only three out of a hundred said yes.

  26. What about you this morning?

  27. If I asked you, do you believe that on your good day or even on the bad days

  28. that God is a hundred percent for you because of Jesus?

  29. And so I hope this morning that maybe if it's the truth that you just know up here,

  30. that God will work it into our hearts this morning

  31. so that we will leave encouraged and strengthened

  32. because there's many trials around us

  33. and yet we have a God who is for us in Jesus.

  34. And so this morning I just want to remind us of this truth

  35. and remind us that the picture that Paul is going to paint for us

  36. is that we are not spiritual orphans trying to earn the love of someone,

  37. but we are adopted children beloved by God the Father.

  38. And so let me pray and then we'll read Romans 8.

  39. Father, I'm so grateful this morning that

  40. that even though what our sins deserve

  41. is to be cast out into the darkness,

  42. that because of Jesus,

  43. that you actually call us children

  44. and welcome us into a home

  45. and you say that you will be our God

  46. and we will dwell with you one day face to face.

  47. So I pray this morning

  48. that as you speak through your word

  49. that we would hear,

  50. that we would have our eyes opened

  51. and that we would be encouraged

  52. that you are for us in Christ

  53. so we might then live for you.

  54. Amen.

  55. Let me read Romans 8,

  56. starting in verse 28.

  57. And we know that for those who love God,

  58. all things work together for good

  59. for those who are called according to His purpose.

  60. For those whom He foreknew,

  61. He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son

  62. in order that He might be the firstborn

  63. amongst many brothers and sisters.

  64. And those whom He predestined, He also called.

  65. And those whom He called, He also justified.

  66. And those whom He justified, He also glorified.

  67. What then shall we say to these things?

  68. If God is for us,

  69. who can be against us?

  70. He who did not spare His own Son

  71. but gave Him up for us all,

  72. how will He not also with Him

  73. graciously give us all things?

  74. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  75. It is God who justifies.

  76. Who is to condemn?

  77. Again, Christ Jesus is the one who died.

  78. More than that, who was raised.

  79. Who is at the right hand of God.

  80. Who indeed is interceding for us.

  81. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  82. Shall tribulation?

  83. Or distress?

  84. Or persecution?

  85. Or famine?

  86. Or nakedness?

  87. Or danger?

  88. Or sword?

  89. As it is written,

  90. for your sake we are being killed all the day long.

  91. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

  92. No.

  93. In all these things we are more than conquerors

  94. through Him who loved us.

  95. For I am sure that neither death nor life,

  96. nor angels nor rulers,

  97. nor things present nor things to come,

  98. nor powers, nor height, nor depth,

  99. nor anything else in all creation

  100. will be able to separate us

  101. from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  102. Amen.

  103. Well, this morning I just want to look at

  104. the three things that Paul's going to talk to us about.

  105. The reason God is for us,

  106. the reality of Him being for us,

  107. and the results of God being for us.

  108. And so first, the reason why He's for us.

  109. Verse 31 is this key verse in the passage, right?

  110. He says, if God is for us, who can be against us?

  111. But let's not just slide past that,

  112. because maybe this morning you're thinking,

  113. well, of course God is for us.

  114. I mean, that's who God is.

  115. He's a loving God.

  116. He just loves us.

  117. Or maybe you're thinking,

  118. well, of course God's for me.

  119. I'm a good person.

  120. Why would He be against me?

  121. But if you're reading the whole Bible,

  122. and if you read the first seven and a half chapters of Romans,

  123. you would see there's actually a lot of good reasons

  124. for God to be against us.

  125. Mostly because we have all set ourselves up against Him.

  126. He made us to live for Him,

  127. and we rejected that and went our own way.

  128. We're rebels.

  129. We're traitors.

  130. We deserve eternal darkness and judgment and death.

  131. Because God is holy.

  132. He's perfect.

  133. And the only people who are allowed to be in relationship with Him

  134. are perfect people.

  135. Not good people.

  136. Perfect people.

  137. And I don't know about you,

  138. but I don't fall in that category.

  139. And so there's no reason for me to hope

  140. that God would be for me or God would be for you.

  141. And yet, God is for many, many sinners.

  142. How?

  143. Well, Paul gives us two answers here.

  144. First, he says in verse 29,

  145. For those whom God foreknew,

  146. He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.

  147. Do you know what it's saying?

  148. He's saying,

  149. Do you know why God's for you?

  150. Because He chose to be.

  151. He just chose to be for you.

  152. He looked at you,

  153. a spiritual orphan,

  154. lost and alone,

  155. and said,

  156. I'm going to adopt you.

  157. Just because of who I am.

  158. Just because I'm a God that loves to adopt orphans and to save sinners.

  159. Before you were thinking of me,

  160. before you were thinking about being adopted,

  161. I just came and adopted you.

  162. And I adopted you to be in my family, right?

  163. Because that's the last half of verse 29.

  164. In order that He, that's Jesus,

  165. might be the firstborn amongst many brothers and sisters.

  166. He's adopted us into a family.

  167. He just said,

  168. I'm going to adopt you.

  169. I'm just going to love you.

  170. Just because of me.

  171. Not you.

  172. Because of me.

  173. And even that word foreknow in verse 29

  174. is this beautiful relational word.

  175. It's not foreknowing like,

  176. I know what you're going to do,

  177. what you're going to think about.

  178. It's the kind of knowing we talk about

  179. when I ask you a question.

  180. Do you know Mike Salvati?

  181. I don't mean, do you know about him?

  182. I mean, do you know him?

  183. Do you have a relationship with him?

  184. And God's saying,

  185. I foreknew you.

  186. I knew you relationally before you ever knew me.

  187. And I chose you before you ever knew me.

  188. Just because I'm for you.

  189. Because I love you.

  190. And what's beautiful about this is,

  191. if God being for us was primarily dependent on us,

  192. then we'd be in trouble.

  193. Because if God said,

  194. well, I'm only for you if you have enough faith,

  195. well, then what if tomorrow you don't have enough faith?

  196. Then that foundation gets shaky.

  197. Or what if God was just for you

  198. because you were good enough?

  199. You did enough good things.

  200. Well, maybe today you feel confident,

  201. but next week,

  202. I don't know if I've done enough good this week,

  203. maybe God's not for me.

  204. But if God is for you because He chose to be,

  205. and He doesn't change,

  206. then you've got a stable foundation.

  207. You've got a bed you can lay your head on.

  208. And that's God's choice to love you.

  209. God's choice to love those who are in Christ.

  210. And not only that,

  211. but I think it's really important to see this

  212. because not only does it give you a stable foundation,

  213. but if you think about this human relationship

  214. that we always have,

  215. if you were the only one doing

  216. all of the pursuing of a relationship,

  217. you know,

  218. hey, let's hang out,

  219. and the other person never returned your calls,

  220. never initiated anything with you,

  221. you might wonder if they liked you back,

  222. if you're doing all the pursuing.

  223. But since God did the pursuing of us,

  224. just like in a human relationship,

  225. we know that person must love me

  226. if they did all the pursuing of me

  227. even before I had any thought of loving them.

  228. That's God loving us.

  229. And not only did He choose to adopt us,

  230. but maybe some of you know this,

  231. adoption has a cost, right?

  232. If you've adopted,

  233. you know there's a cost to adopting.

  234. And so Paul tells us in verse 32,

  235. let me tell you what the cost was of your adoption.

  236. He who did not spare His own Son,

  237. but gave Him up for us all.

  238. And saying,

  239. do you want to know why I'm for you?

  240. Because not only did I choose to adopt you,

  241. but I sent my only Son

  242. to die to make you family.

  243. That's how much I loved.

  244. And it really hit me

  245. when I was talking to a non-Christian friend recently

  246. about why Jesus had to die.

  247. And it just hit me.

  248. And I told him, I said,

  249. do you think that if I could save you

  250. any other way than sacrificing my child,

  251. that I would sacrifice my child?

  252. He was like, well, probably not.

  253. I said, yet God sent His Son for us.

  254. How can you doubt that He is for you

  255. when He sent His Son to die?

  256. That's the proof to go back to

  257. when you're wondering,

  258. is God for me?

  259. He sent His Son.

  260. And this really struck me several years ago,

  261. back in 2010.

  262. I'm a big hockey fan being from Canada.

  263. And Roberto Luongo is a goaltender

  264. who always got the rap of being a good goalie

  265. but never able to win the big games.

  266. But in 2010,

  267. he helped Canada win the gold medal.

  268. And right after the game,

  269. he was being interviewed.

  270. And he held up his gold medal and said,

  271. from now on,

  272. no matter what anyone says,

  273. I can point to this gold medal

  274. and tell them,

  275. I am a winner.

  276. And he's right.

  277. He's got the evidence right there.

  278. He can point back to it.

  279. He can hang it up on his wall

  280. and when people come over and say,

  281. you see that medal right there?

  282. That proves I'm a winner.

  283. And Paul's saying,

  284. that's how the cross works.

  285. When you're wondering,

  286. is God for me?

  287. He says,

  288. look back there

  289. on that wood

  290. where you see God's Son crucified for you

  291. and then ask again,

  292. does God love me?

  293. Is God for me?

  294. And guess what the answer's gonna be?

  295. Yes.

  296. That's the proof to go back to.

  297. So when you're doubting,

  298. which we all have doubts at points,

  299. when you're wrestling with questions,

  300. don't look inward

  301. to see if there's anything inward

  302. that God would love.

  303. Look outward to the cross

  304. and see there

  305. that God is for sinners.

  306. That God loves people

  307. who don't deserve to be loved.

  308. And if you've trusted in Christ,

  309. he's for you

  310. because of Jesus.

  311. He chose in eternity past

  312. to adopt you

  313. and he paid the price

  314. at Calvary

  315. to make you family.

  316. That's why God is for you.

  317. Because of him,

  318. not you.

  319. But what is the reality

  320. of living in his family

  321. then look like?

  322. Well, Paul doesn't leave us hanging.

  323. He says,

  324. I'm not just gonna tell you

  325. that God's for you.

  326. I'm gonna tell you

  327. what that means

  328. to encourage you.

  329. So he says in verse 31,

  330. what shall we say

  331. to these things?

  332. Well, first he says,

  333. if God is for us,

  334. who can be against us?

  335. So that's the first reality

  336. of God being for us

  337. is no one can ultimately

  338. be against you.

  339. Now that doesn't mean

  340. you're never gonna face opposition.

  341. That doesn't mean

  342. you're never gonna face

  343. trials or difficulty.

  344. But what it does mean

  345. is that you have

  346. the all-powerful

  347. creator God

  348. behind you.

  349. And anything he wants

  350. to do in your life,

  351. no one and nothing

  352. will stop him

  353. from doing that

  354. for good in your life.

  355. Man,

  356. that's the guy

  357. I want on my team.

  358. And Paul's saying,

  359. if you are in Christ,

  360. you have this

  361. all-powerful God

  362. behind you,

  363. strengthening you.

  364. No one can stand

  365. against him.

  366. But the second reality

  367. he says in verse 32,

  368. God will provide

  369. what you need.

  370. He who did not spare

  371. his own son

  372. but gave him up

  373. for us all,

  374. how will he not

  375. also with him

  376. graciously

  377. give us all things.

  378. You see what Paul's doing?

  379. He's arguing

  380. from the greater

  381. to the lesser.

  382. He's saying,

  383. if God provided

  384. for your greatest need,

  385. you were on your way

  386. to eternal judgment

  387. and Jesus paid

  388. that amazing price,

  389. then don't you think

  390. he'll take care

  391. of the little things

  392. you need?

  393. It would be like

  394. if, say,

  395. a billionaire

  396. found a homeless person,

  397. built in this

  398. amazing mansion,

  399. and then one day

  400. the light bulb

  401. over the front door

  402. burns out

  403. and the person

  404. that's now living

  405. in the house

  406. is like,

  407. man,

  408. I don't know

  409. if the billionaire

  410. is going to want

  411. to pay

  412. to replace

  413. this light bulb.

  414. It's like,

  415. Paul's like,

  416. what are you talking about?

  417. He built you

  418. a huge house,

  419. of course he'll

  420. replace the light bulb

  421. and that's what

  422. Paul's saying.

  423. He's saying,

  424. it's so easy

  425. to think of God

  426. as this miser

  427. that he doesn't

  428. really want to give us

  429. all that we need

  430. and Paul's saying,

  431. what are you talking about?

  432. He gave you more

  433. than you needed

  434. in Jesus.

  435. Of course he'll give you

  436. what you need.

  437. Of course he's eager

  438. to be there

  439. and graciously,

  440. that is,

  441. undeservedly give it to you.

  442. You don't need to keep

  443. earning anything from him.

  444. He just wants

  445. to give it to you.

  446. Now it's good to remember

  447. that he'll provide

  448. for your needs,

  449. not your wants.

  450. He's not going to provide

  451. everything you want

  452. and even what you think

  453. you need,

  454. you might not actually need.

  455. But even in those

  456. moments when you're

  457. feeling like God's

  458. not providing

  459. what you need,

  460. don't think of him

  461. as a miser holding back.

  462. No.

  463. Because of Jesus,

  464. he is for you,

  465. eager,

  466. gracious to give you

  467. what you need.

  468. He proved that

  469. on the cross.

  470. And I love this quote

  471. from Hudson Taylor.

  472. He was a missionary

  473. that went to Africa

  474. and he went

  475. without asking anyone

  476. to give him money.

  477. He just said,

  478. God will take care

  479. of my money.

  480. And he had a couple

  481. of kids.

  482. And people are saying,

  483. don't do that.

  484. That's foolish.

  485. Don't do it.

  486. And Hudson Taylor

  487. looked at them

  488. and said,

  489. I am a father

  490. and I know my kids

  491. need three meals a day.

  492. Don't you think

  493. my heavenly father

  494. will care more for me

  495. than I do for my children?

  496. And he was pulling back

  497. this idea

  498. that we can trust

  499. our father

  500. who loves us

  501. to care for us.

  502. Not always in the ways

  503. we'd expect,

  504. but he really does

  505. care for us.

  506. And the third reality

  507. he mentions

  508. is in verse 33.

  509. He says,

  510. who shall bring

  511. any charge

  512. against God's elect?

  513. So he's saying,

  514. look,

  515. the scene he's painting

  516. is imagine

  517. it's God's courtroom

  518. at the end of time.

  519. And he's saying,

  520. who can stand

  521. before God

  522. and say,

  523. see that person

  524. right over there,

  525. God?

  526. Did you know

  527. the terrible things

  528. they did?

  529. Let me pull out

  530. their file.

  531. They don't deserve

  532. to be here.

  533. And God says,

  534. it is God

  535. who justifies.

  536. That's what Paul says.

  537. It's God who justifies.

  538. And what Paul's saying

  539. is, look,

  540. if that were to happen,

  541. if someone was to come

  542. into God's courtroom

  543. and say,

  544. you don't deserve

  545. to be there,

  546. God would say,

  547. I know that.

  548. But I also know

  549. that Jesus died

  550. for them

  551. and they've trusted

  552. in Him.

  553. And their file

  554. is now Jesus' file.

  555. And I am the judge

  556. and I have declared

  557. them innocent

  558. and guiltless,

  559. worthy to be here.

  560. Who are you

  561. to challenge my ruling?

  562. Isn't that beautiful?

  563. It reminds me of

  564. the scene

  565. in A Knight's Tale.

  566. It's in a little

  567. older movie,

  568. but if you've seen it,

  569. Heath Ledger's character

  570. plays this peasant

  571. who pretends

  572. to be a noble

  573. so he can joust

  574. and make money

  575. so he can eat.

  576. And he gets caught

  577. and so he gets

  578. put in the stocks

  579. and people are mocking him

  580. and throwing tomatoes

  581. at him.

  582. But Prince Edward

  583. of England

  584. comes up

  585. from the crowd

  586. and he says,

  587. my royal historians

  588. have discovered

  589. that actually

  590. he is from

  591. an ancient

  592. royal line.

  593. And this is

  594. my word

  595. and as such

  596. it is beyond

  597. contestation.

  598. No one's going

  599. to challenge

  600. the word

  601. of Prince Edward

  602. on that.

  603. How much more

  604. when the King

  605. of Kings

  606. declares

  607. you are not

  608. guilty.

  609. That is my word

  610. and it is beyond

  611. contestation.

  612. And then fourth,

  613. just he keeps

  614. piling up the goodness

  615. here.

  616. It says in verse 34,

  617. who is to condemn?

  618. Who can come

  619. and again in this

  620. courtroom

  621. bring more accusations

  622. and bring condemnation?

  623. And what does Paul say?

  624. He says,

  625. Christ Jesus

  626. is the one who died.

  627. More than that,

  628. who is raised,

  629. who is at the right

  630. hand of God,

  631. who indeed

  632. is interceding

  633. for us.

  634. See what Paul's saying?

  635. Is he saying,

  636. look,

  637. Jesus already

  638. took the condemnation.

  639. He already

  640. took the condemnation

  641. so you don't have

  642. to bear it.

  643. And more than that,

  644. he was raised,

  645. showing that

  646. the check

  647. to save you

  648. cleared.

  649. And even now,

  650. he stands

  651. as your great

  652. defense attorney.

  653. See,

  654. if anyone had the right

  655. to charge you in court,

  656. it would be Jesus.

  657. He's God.

  658. You've sinned against him.

  659. And not only that,

  660. but your sin

  661. put him up on the cross.

  662. If anyone has the right

  663. to bring a condemnation

  664. against you,

  665. it's Jesus.

  666. And yet,

  667. instead,

  668. he acts

  669. as your

  670. defense attorney.

  671. the only one

  672. who has a right

  673. to charge you

  674. instead

  675. defends you,

  676. though you don't

  677. deserve it.

  678. And these two

  679. truths together,

  680. I think,

  681. really touch on

  682. one of these

  683. deep things

  684. in our hearts.

  685. As human beings,

  686. we want

  687. to be loved

  688. by others

  689. and to be

  690. deeply known.

  691. And yet,

  692. we're afraid

  693. that if people

  694. really knew us

  695. all the way down,

  696. they would

  697. condemn us.

  698. they would judge us

  699. instead of loving us.

  700. And yet,

  701. here,

  702. Paul says,

  703. look,

  704. the only person

  705. that knows you

  706. all the way down

  707. to the bottom

  708. that could condemn you,

  709. that could judge you,

  710. instead,

  711. has chosen

  712. to love you

  713. in Jesus.

  714. You don't need

  715. to be afraid.

  716. In Jesus,

  717. God is for you.

  718. And so,

  719. fifth,

  720. the last reality

  721. he talks about here

  722. is that nothing

  723. can separate us

  724. from God's love.

  725. All right,

  726. verse 35,

  727. who shall separate us

  728. from the love

  729. of Christ?

  730. And then Paul says,

  731. shall tribulation

  732. or distress

  733. or persecution

  734. or famine

  735. or nakedness

  736. or danger

  737. or sword?

  738. Because Paul

  739. wants to do something

  740. really careful here.

  741. He wants to say,

  742. I'm not just throwing out

  743. some slogan.

  744. I'm not just putting up

  745. some random Facebook meme

  746. to help you feel good.

  747. Nothing can separate us

  748. from the love of Jesus.

  749. Well,

  750. I don't know,

  751. Paul.

  752. There's a lot of hard

  753. things in my life.

  754. Paul says,

  755. okay,

  756. let's tackle that.

  757. We're not just

  758. going to throw this

  759. out as some random

  760. phrase to feel good.

  761. Let's talk about this.

  762. Can nothing actually

  763. separate you

  764. from the love of Jesus?

  765. What about hard things?

  766. And everything

  767. Paul names

  768. in verse 35,

  769. he went through.

  770. Paul's the guy

  771. that got beaten

  772. several times

  773. for being a believer

  774. of Jesus.

  775. Stoned,

  776. nearly to death

  777. or maybe to death.

  778. Shipwrecked several times,

  779. often in want of food.

  780. He said,

  781. I've been there.

  782. I've been there.

  783. I can testify.

  784. These things

  785. don't separate you

  786. from the love of Jesus.

  787. And so then he says

  788. in verse 36,

  789. he says,

  790. okay,

  791. let me even remind you

  792. that this is not

  793. a question that's new.

  794. I'm going to quote

  795. from the Old Testament

  796. from Psalm 44.

  797. For your sake,

  798. we are being killed

  799. all the day long.

  800. We are regarded

  801. as sheep to be slaughtered.

  802. And Paul's saying,

  803. look,

  804. God's people

  805. have often felt this way.

  806. You're not alone.

  807. If you're sitting there

  808. thinking,

  809. I know it sounds good

  810. that God's for me,

  811. but it sure doesn't feel

  812. that way right now.

  813. Paul's saying,

  814. it's okay.

  815. I've been there.

  816. God's people of Israel

  817. back in Psalm 44

  818. were there.

  819. They were wondering,

  820. it sure,

  821. what it feels like,

  822. God,

  823. is that we're being killed

  824. for you.

  825. That we're like sheep

  826. just being led out

  827. to be slaughtered.

  828. Where's our Father

  829. caring for us?

  830. Where's our Father

  831. protecting us?

  832. Where's your love, God?

  833. It just feels hard.

  834. And Paul says,

  835. verse 37,

  836. no.

  837. In all these things,

  838. not just the good times,

  839. in these things,

  840. in the days when you're being

  841. like a lamb

  842. being led out to slaughter,

  843. in those very things,

  844. the good things,

  845. the hard things,

  846. the day when you find out

  847. that someone you love

  848. has cancer,

  849. the day you lose your job,

  850. the day you have

  851. relational breaks,

  852. in those things,

  853. we are more than conquerors

  854. through Him

  855. who loved us.

  856. See,

  857. we often think,

  858. well,

  859. we're going to be conquerors

  860. if we conquer over suffering.

  861. But Paul doesn't say that.

  862. Paul says,

  863. no,

  864. we are conquerors

  865. in these things.

  866. You're not conquerors

  867. when Jesus takes you

  868. out of the suffering.

  869. You're conquerors in Jesus

  870. in the day of suffering.

  871. Just like Jesus was.

  872. What day did He

  873. win the victory for us?

  874. Was it not the day of suffering?

  875. The day when He was whipped

  876. and a crown of thorns

  877. was placed on His head

  878. and He carried a cross

  879. and He hung on Calvary

  880. and He experienced

  881. the wrath of God.

  882. in that thing,

  883. on that day of suffering

  884. is when Jesus

  885. was the conqueror.

  886. And so,

  887. Paul says,

  888. yes,

  889. even in those things

  890. we're conquerors.

  891. And it's through Him.

  892. Paul's saying,

  893. look,

  894. I know it's going to be hard.

  895. I know it's going to be hard things.

  896. Adoption to God's family

  897. does not fix everything.

  898. It doesn't just get rid

  899. of all the hard things.

  900. But,

  901. through Him,

  902. through Him,

  903. through Him walking with you

  904. and also

  905. through our older brother Jesus

  906. who on the cross

  907. actually was

  908. cut off

  909. from God's love

  910. so that

  911. anyone who trusts in Him

  912. would never

  913. have to be cut off.

  914. That's how you can be

  915. conquerors in suffering

  916. because there was

  917. one man,

  918. the God-man Jesus,

  919. who really did suffer

  920. and who really did

  921. get cut off

  922. from God's love.

  923. Father,

  924. why have you forsaken me?

  925. So that

  926. I would never have to forsake

  927. your other brothers and sisters.

  928. That's why.

  929. Yes,

  930. He's for us.

  931. And that's why

  932. Paul can go on to say,

  933. death can't separate you

  934. from God's love.

  935. Jesus already died

  936. and He defeated death.

  937. So death can't separate you

  938. from God's love anymore.

  939. Nothing in this life

  940. can separate you.

  941. Not angels

  942. or powers

  943. or principalities

  944. because Jesus

  945. conquered all of them

  946. at the cross.

  947. He showed His power

  948. over all the political powers

  949. in Rome,

  950. the spiritual forces.

  951. He showed Himself

  952. to be the victor.

  953. And if your connection

  954. to God

  955. is through Jesus,

  956. then you have

  957. a firm,

  958. stable connection.

  959. nothing can separate you

  960. from the love of God

  961. in Jesus.

  962. If you're not in Jesus,

  963. you don't have that connection.

  964. But if you're in Jesus,

  965. you will never be separated

  966. from God's love.

  967. So what's then the result

  968. of God being for us?

  969. Well, it's verse 28.

  970. We skipped it earlier,

  971. but let's come back to it.

  972. We know,

  973. this is the results

  974. of God being for us,

  975. we know

  976. that for those

  977. who love God,

  978. all things

  979. work together

  980. for good.

  981. For those who are called

  982. according to His purpose.

  983. All things.

  984. All the hard things

  985. we just talked about.

  986. All those things

  987. work together

  988. for good.

  989. That's the end result.

  990. And this isn't

  991. some general promise.

  992. You know,

  993. sometimes I hang out

  994. with people at work,

  995. and you're like,

  996. yeah, don't worry,

  997. life will work out

  998. for good.

  999. No, it doesn't always

  1000. work out for good.

  1001. If you just look

  1002. at this life,

  1003. things do not always

  1004. work out for good.

1005. This is not a general proverb

1006. that applies to all people

  1007. all over the world.

  1008. This is a promise

  1009. from God the Father

  1010. to His children.

  1011. For those,

  1012. what does He say?

1013. For those who love God.

1014. For those who love God,

  1015. all things work together

  1016. for good.

  1017. If you're His child,

1018. you can claim this promise

  1019. that all things

  1020. will work together

  1021. for good.

  1022. And it's a good

  1023. defined by God.

  1024. It's not the good

  1025. you want.

  1026. It's the good

  1027. defined by God,

  1028. which in verse 29

  1029. He explains.

  1030. It's to be conformed

  1031. to the image

  1032. of His Son.

  1033. That's what God wants.

  1034. God wants you

  1035. to become more

  1036. like Jesus.

  1037. And He will work

  1038. everything else

  1039. out for that purpose.

  1040. Now do you see

  1041. why God can actually

1042. love us in the midst

  1043. of suffering?

  1044. Because what if

  1045. suffering is His chisel

  1046. on you,

  1047. the block of marble?

  1048. What if suffering

  1049. is the chisel

  1050. He is using

  1051. to sharpen away

  1052. and create in you

  1053. the likeness of Jesus?

  1054. Suddenly suffering

  1055. isn't the evidence

  1056. of a lack of God's love.

  1057. But what if suffering

1058. might be the very evidence

  1059. He does love you?

1060. That He loves you enough

  1061. to chisel away

  1062. at all the junk

  1063. in your life

  1064. and make you more

  1065. like Jesus.

1066. To keep working on you.

  1067. To keep refining you.

1068. So you will be more

  1069. like Jesus.

  1070. And that's why Paul

  1071. can say

  1072. that not only

  1073. will you be conformed

  1074. to His image,

  1075. but verse 30,

  1076. that those whom

  1077. He predestined,

  1078. He calls.

  1079. And those He calls,

  1080. He justifies.

  1081. And those He justifies,

  1082. He glorifies.

  1083. What Paul's saying is

1084. He doesn't just call you

  1085. on the phone

  1086. and say,

  1087. I'm adopting you.

1088. He doesn't just justify you,

  1089. which is declaring

  1090. that you're innocent

  1091. and worthy to be

  1092. in His family.

  1093. But He also says,

1094. I'm going to bring you home.

  1095. That's glorified.

1096. And I'm going to bring you home

  1097. in the perfect image

  1098. of Jesus.

1099. And I'm not going to stop

1100. until that process is done.

1101. I love you too much

1102. to leave you where you're at.

  1103. And yes,

  1104. I might even use

  1105. all things

1106. and some of the things

  1107. you don't want

  1108. to do just that.

1109. Because if I've called you,

  1110. I will justify you.

1111. And if I justify you,

  1112. I will glorify you.

  1113. You see that chain?

  1114. There's no break

  1115. in the chains.

  1116. If He calls you,

  1117. He will lead you

  1118. all the way

  1119. to glorification.

  1120. He's powerful enough

  1121. to do that.

  1122. And He's good enough.

  1123. He's good enough

  1124. that the good thing

  1125. He'll work in you

  1126. is actually really good.

1127. And we can trust Him

  1128. with that.

  1129. And we know that

  1130. because when we look

  1131. at the pattern

  1132. of Jesus' life,

  1133. who we're supposed

  1134. to be modeled after,

  1135. His life was one

  1136. of suffering first

  1137. and glory later.

  1138. And that's the path

  1139. of the Christian.

  1140. Suffer first,

  1141. glory later.

  1142. And the suffering

  1143. is often God's

  1144. loving hand

  1145. to make you more

  1146. like Jesus.

  1147. It doesn't mean

  1148. the suffering

  1149. is good always,

  1150. but He uses it

  1151. for good.

  1152. He uses it

  1153. for good.

  1154. And He will keep

  1155. His promise

1156. that He will glorify you

  1157. because a good Father

  1158. keeps His promises.

  1159. And that's why Paul

  1160. can say earlier

  1161. in verse 18,

  1162. I consider the sufferings

  1163. of this present time

  1164. not worth comparing

  1165. with the glory

1166. that is to be revealed

  1167. to us.

  1168. It's not because

  1169. the sufferings

  1170. aren't real.

  1171. It's not because

  1172. they're not hard.

  1173. but the sufferings

  1174. compared to the glory

  1175. don't add up.

  1176. And when He can

1177. keep His eyes on that,

  1178. Paul says,

  1179. I can rejoice

  1180. even in those moments

  1181. of suffering.

  1182. So this morning,

  1183. I want to close

  1184. by asking really

  1185. two questions.

  1186. Is God

  1187. your Father?

  1188. Do you know Him

  1189. as Father?

  1190. Because you're not

1191. born a child of God.

  1192. You need to be

1193. reborn a child of God.

1194. But in the Gospel of John,

  1195. there's this wonderful promise.

  1196. Anyone who believes

1197. that His trust in Jesus

  1198. is given the right

  1199. to be called

  1200. children of God.

  1201. So this morning,

  1202. have you recognized

  1203. that you don't deserve

  1204. to be a child?

  1205. Have you recognized

  1206. that you've only

  1207. been a rebel

  1208. and yet

  1209. Jesus died

  1210. to make it possible

1211. for you to be adopted?

  1212. Have you trusted

  1213. in Jesus for that?

  1214. Have you given up

  1215. trying to pretend

  1216. that you could earn

1217. your way into the family

  1218. and just said,

  1219. God, I want in,

1220. but I know the only way

  1221. in is through Jesus.

1222. So help me to believe.

  1223. Trust in Him.

1224. If you do this morning,

  1225. you're in.

1226. You're part of the family.

1227. And all these wonderful things

1228. we talk about this morning

  1229. are for you,

  1230. promises from your Father.

  1231. Maybe some of you

  1232. this morning,

  1233. you feel like,

  1234. no, I know God's my Father.

  1235. But maybe this morning,

  1236. you've come off a hard week

  1237. or a hard month

  1238. or a hard year.

1239. Or maybe the hard week

  1240. is about to come

1241. and you don't even know it yet.

  1242. Will you this morning

1243. sit in this kind of truth

  1244. so you can remember,

1245. no, God is for me.

  1246. All this suffering

  1247. is for my good

  1248. and His glory.

1249. And if in those moments

  1250. when I'm really struggling

  1251. with doubting it,

1252. Father, give me the eyes

1253. to look to the cross

  1254. and see Your Son

  1255. hanging there for me

  1256. and remind me again

  1257. that You're for me.

1258. Help me to trust You.

1259. Not when You take me

  1260. out of suffering,

1261. but exactly in the middle of it.

  1262. Give me the confidence

1263. that You are for me.

1264. And only when You know

1265. that someone like God the Father

1266. and Your older brother Jesus

  1267. has Your back

1268. can You walk day by day

1269. in often a very hard world

  1270. and still say

1271. the sufferings are not worth comparing

1272. to the glory that is to come.

  1273. Let me pray.

1274. Father, thank You so much

1275. that Your Word is just,

  1276. it's like honey,

  1277. sweeter than honey

  1278. from the honeycomb.

1279. That in the midst of hard things,

1280. we don't come to Your Word

1281. and just find mere positive thinking,

1282. but we find substance and truth

1283. to sink our teeth into

  1284. that feeds our souls,

1285. that strengthens our spiritual muscles

  1286. and builds us up

  1287. and encourages us

1288. through sometimes the very long

1289. and very hard and difficult journey

  1290. that can lie ahead.

1291. And yet, You have promised

1292. that for those who have trusted in Jesus,

1293. You will never leave us.

1294. You will never forsake us.

  1295. You are with us.

1296. And You're with us, Father,

  1297. because Your Son, Jesus,

1298. died and was abandoned by You

  1299. 2,000 years ago

1300. so that when He was raised again

  1301. from the dead,

1302. He could offer the hope

1303. that no one would ever have

  1304. to be abandoned again

  1305. who are in Jesus

1306. and loved by the Father.

1307. So I pray this morning

  1308. that You would,

  1309. by Your Holy Spirit,

  1310. help us to know

  1311. Your love

  1312. and to know

1313. that You are with us

  1314. and to know

1315. You're using all things for good

1316. and that even this morning

  1317. maybe some here

1318. would for the first time

  1319. believe in Jesus

  1320. and be welcomed in

1321. to a family of love

  1322. for their good

  1323. and Your glory.

  1324. Amen.

  1325. Amen.

  1326. Amen.

  1327. Amen.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. Amen.

  1330. Amen.

  1331. Amen.

  1332. Amen.

  1333. Amen.

  1334. Amen.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Amen.

  1337. Amen.

  1338. Amen.

  1339. Amen.

  1340. Amen.

  1341. Amen.

  1342. Amen.

  1343. Amen.
