  1. Would you turn with me in your Bibles to the book of Psalms,

  2. right in the middle of your Bibles,

  3. and please find Psalm 90.

  4. It will be important that you listen carefully as I read,

  5. follow along in your own Bible.

  6. This is God's Word, Psalm 90.

  7. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

  8. Before the mountains were brought forth,

  9. or ever you had formed the earth and the world,

  10. from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

  11. You return man to dust and say,

  12. Return, O children of man.

  13. For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past,

  14. or as a watch in the night.

  15. You sweep them away as with a flood.

  16. They are like a dream,

  17. like grass that is renewed in the morning.

  18. In the morning it flourishes and is renewed.

  19. In the evening it fades and withers.

  20. For we are brought to an end by your anger.

  21. By your wrath we are dismayed.

  22. You have set our iniquities before you,

  23. our secret sins in the light of your presence.

  24. For all our days pass away under your wrath.

  25. We bring our years to an end like a sigh.

  26. The years of our life are 70 or even by reason of strength 80,

  27. and yet their span is but toil and trouble.

  28. They are soon gone and we fly away.

  29. Who considers the power of your anger and your wrath according to the fear of you?

  30. So, teach us to number our days,

  31. that we may get a heart of wisdom.

  32. Return, O Lord.

  33. How long?

  34. Have pity on your servants.

  35. Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,

  36. that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

  37. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,

  38. and for as many years as we have seen evil.

  39. Let your work be shown to your servants,

  40. and your glorious power to their children.

  41. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us,

  42. and establish the work of our hands upon us.

  43. Yes, establish the work of our hands.

  44. Let's pray together.

  45. Father, we thank you so much for your love for us.

  46. We know ourselves at least well enough to marvel at your love for us.

  47. And you know us even better than we know ourselves.

  48. And yet, you have loved us,

  49. and you continue to love us,

  50. and you have promised that you will never stop loving us.

  51. And so we thank you.

  52. We pray this morning that you would speak.

  53. Father, I pray that you would help me to minister your word for your people.

  54. We pray in Jesus' name.

  55. Amen.

  56. Well, I don't know what it's like for you as you think about the days ahead.

  57. And when I say the days ahead,

  58. I have in mind both your days ahead as a church,

  59. but also, maybe especially,

  60. your days ahead personally,

  61. each one of us.

  62. For some, as you look ahead,

  63. it might seem like a fairly pleasant path,

  64. at least as far as you can see.

  65. For some, the days ahead might look kind of bleak,

  66. unpromising.

  67. For some, it might look like an obstacle course,

  68. maybe a very challenging obstacle course,

  69. one filled with all kinds of barriers,

  70. some of them daunting barriers.

  71. But the fact of the matter is,

  72. for all of us,

  73. we are walking forward into the days ahead,

  74. and that walking forward is going to require some courage,

  75. some going forth in faith.

  76. And to help us with that,

  77. I want us to consider this psalm this morning.

  78. It is a psalm of remarkable wisdom.

  79. This is ancient wisdom.

  80. This is the oldest psalm that we have.

  81. Most of the psalms, as you probably know,

  82. were written by David or by his contemporaries.

  83. This one was written by Moses

  84. some 500 years earlier than David.

  85. And as we look at this psalm this morning,

  86. I want to make just two very simple points.

  87. The first point is what occupies verses 1 through 12.

  88. The second point is found in verse 12

  89. to the end of the psalm.

  90. In fact, let me just tell you right away

  91. what the points are.

  92. The first point,

  93. life is short.

  94. Like really short.

  95. The second point,

  96. live wisely.

  97. Or we might say,

  98. make sure not to waste your short life.

  99. or any part of it.

  100. Teach us,

  101. Moses says in verse 12,

  102. all of us,

  103. no matter what your age,

  104. teach us to get a heart of wisdom.

  105. That's the second point.

  106. But first,

  107. point number one,

  108. life is short.

  109. Moses starts his psalm

  110. talking to God

  111. about what He is like.

  112. Look at verse 1.

  113. Lord,

  114. You have been our dwelling place

  115. in all generations.

  116. We read that

  117. and we're immediately drawn

  118. to this dwelling place idea,

  119. right?

  120. Lord,

  121. You have been our dwelling place.

  122. That sounds

  123. really nice,

  124. comfortable,

  125. attractive,

  126. kind of secure,

  127. especially if the circumstances

  128. of our lives

  129. have been a little challenging.

  130. And it's true

  131. what Moses says here.

  132. God is the true

  133. dwelling place

  134. of His people.

  135. We live in God.

  136. The Bible wants us

  137. to know that,

  138. deeply know that,

  139. experientially know that

  140. about God.

  141. But for Moses,

  142. speaking here,

  143. that is like a given.

  144. He's operating with that

  145. as a given.

  146. What he's stressing here

  147. is that

  148. in all generations part.

  149. Lord,

  150. You have been our dwelling place

  151. in all generations.

  152. For my generation,

  153. for my father's generation,

  154. for my father's father's generation,

  155. as far back as we can reach,

  156. and that will be true

  157. for all of the generations

  158. to come.

  159. You see,

  160. Moses is not here

  161. in Psalm 90

  162. marveling

  163. at the fact that

  164. God is our dwelling place.

  165. He knows that.

  166. He loves that

  167. as He should,

  168. as we should.

  169. But that's not

  170. what he's marveling at here.

  171. He's marveling

  172. at God's

  173. unchangeableness.

  174. His

  175. eternal

  176. unchangeableness.

  177. And that becomes

  178. even more clear

  179. in verse 2.

  180. Before the mountains

  181. were brought forth

  182. or ever you had formed

  183. the earth and the world

  184. from everlasting

  185. to everlasting,

  186. you are God.

  187. Now,

  188. it's really important

  189. that we see

  190. that emphasis.

  191. What exactly

  192. about

  193. God

  194. Moses

  195. is emphasizing,

  196. but it's also

  197. very important

  198. that we see

  199. Moses' purpose.

  200. Why is he emphasizing that?

  201. Because even though

  202. Moses is stressing

  203. the eternality,

  204. the unchangeableness

  205. of God,

  206. his purpose

  207. is actually

  208. to confront us

  209. with our mortality.

  210. He's emphasizing

  211. God's eternality

  212. to heighten that

  213. in stark contrast.

  214. Just listen to the flow

  215. of thought here.

  216. Lord,

  217. you have been

  218. our dwelling place

  219. in all generations.

  220. Before the mountains

  221. were brought forth

  222. or ever you had formed

  223. the earth and the world

  224. from everlasting

  225. to everlasting,

  226. you are God,

  227. you return

  228. man to dust.

  229. You hear that contrast?

  230. And now in verses

  231. four through six,

  232. he proceeds to unpack

  233. that point,

  234. which really is

  235. his main point.

  236. Look at what he says

  237. in verse four.

  238. For a thousand years

  239. in your sight

  240. are but as yesterday

  241. when it is past

  242. or as a watch

  243. in the night.

  244. The point there

  245. in verse four

  246. is that even if we were

  247. to live a thousand years,

  248. even if you were

  249. to live as long

  250. as Methuselah,

  251. still that is just

  252. like a day

  253. in God's sight.

  254. In fact,

  255. not even that long.

  256. It's like a watch

  257. in the night,

  258. a mere four hour span

  259. of time,

  260. even if you lived

  261. a thousand years.

  262. And the fact is

  263. we don't live

  264. anywhere near that.

  265. Look ahead to verse 10.

  266. The years of our life

  267. are 70

  268. or even by reason

  269. of strength,

  270. 80.

  271. Obviously,

  272. some people live longer

  273. but not much.

  274. I mean,

  275. we get the point,

  276. right?

  277. We are not everlasting.

  278. We are mortal.

  279. Our lives are really brief

  280. and then we return

  281. physically to dust.

  282. He goes on

  283. in verses five and six

  284. and says to God,

  285. you sweep them away

  286. as with a flood.

  287. They are like a dream,

  288. like grass that is renewed

  289. in the morning.

  290. In the morning,

  291. it flourishes

  292. and is renewed.

  293. In the evening,

  294. it fades and withers.

  295. What's the point

  296. of all of those images

  297. in verses five and six?

  298. Life is really short.

  299. The Bible says that

  300. repeatedly

  301. so that we cannot

  302. miss it,

  303. at least if we're

  304. paying attention.

  305. In fact,

  306. let me just give you

  307. a little quiz

  308. this morning.

  309. You know those questions

  310. where they give you

  311. a list of

  312. apparently unrelated things

  313. and your job

  314. is to find out

  315. what all of those things

  316. have in common.

  317. You've got to kind of

  318. figure it out.

  319. Let me give you

  320. a question like that

  321. this morning.

  322. What do these things

  323. that I'm about to list

  324. have in common?

  325. You ready?

  326. Mist,

  327. the width of your hand,

  328. a weaver's shuttle,

  329. a runner,

  330. a boat going down a river,

  331. an eagle swooping

  332. on its prey,

  333. a dream,

  334. and a plant that flourishes

  335. in the morning

  336. and withers in the evening.

  337. What do all of those

  338. have in common?

  339. Well, I'm pretty sure

  340. you either know

  341. or can make

  342. a pretty good guess.

  343. Those are all images

  344. that the Bible uses

  345. to communicate

  346. the brevity

  347. of our lives.

  348. What is your life?

  349. For you are a mist

  350. that appears

  351. for a little time

  352. and then vanishes.

  353. James chapter 4.

    James 4 chapter mention

  354. Behold, you have made

  355. my days

  356. a few hand breaths.

  357. Psalm 39.

  358. My days are swifter

  359. than a weaver's shuttle.

  360. Job 7.

  361. My days are swifter

  362. than a runner.

  363. They flee away.

  364. They go like skiffs

  365. of reed,

  366. like an eagle

  367. swooping on the prey.

  368. Job chapter 9.

    Job 9 chapter mention

  369. You sweep them away

  370. as with a flood.

  371. They are like a dream,

  372. like grass

  373. that is renewed

  374. in the morning.

  375. In the morning

  376. it flourishes

  377. and is renewed.

  378. In the evening

  379. it fades

  380. and withers.

  381. Psalm 90.

  382. The point is clear, right?

  383. Life goes by

  384. very quickly.

  385. It's not very long.

  386. And not many of us

  387. would argue the point,

  388. right?

  389. I mean,

  390. you feel this.

  391. You feel it more

  392. as life passes.

  393. I am 57 years old.

  394. In three years

  395. I'll be 60.

  396. Which right now,

  397. to be honest with you,

  398. just feels kind of cool

  399. to me.

  400. But the thing

  401. that can throw me

  402. is that in 13 brief years

  403. I'll be 70.

  404. And that can throw me a bit.

  405. Because that's the number

  406. that gets named here.

  407. 70 years

  408. or by reason of strength,

  409. 80.

  410. When I was 20

  411. it was just unfathomable

  412. to me

  413. that I would ever

  414. be 70 years old.

  415. Now obviously

  416. I knew that

  417. as a fact

  418. but it didn't register

  419. at all anywhere.

  420. I couldn't imagine that.

  421. Actually,

  422. I wasn't so much

  423. that I couldn't imagine it.

  424. I wasn't even trying

  425. to imagine it.

  426. I wasn't even thinking

  427. about trying to imagine it.

  428. It was far from

  429. my concerns

  430. and now

  431. I'm 57

  432. and I'm thinking about it.

  433. Or to put it differently,

  434. all things being equal,

  435. I've lived two-thirds

  436. of my life.

  437. All things equal,

  438. I've got just one-third left.

  439. I'm not panicking.

  440. It's just like,

  441. wow,

  442. where did it go?

  443. So let's bring this

  444. home a little bit

  445. to you.

  446. If you're in your 50s

  447. or 60s

  448. you're probably

  449. already tracking with me.

  450. But let's say

  451. you're in your 40s

  452. or your 30s

  453. or let's say

  454. you're in your 20s.

  455. Let's just say

  456. you're 25.

  457. All things equal,

  458. you have lived

  459. close to one-third

  460. of your life

  461. and you should know

  462. by the way

  463. the second third

  464. goes by a whole lot faster.

  465. So it's not too soon

  466. to come to terms

  467. with this reality

  468. that God's Word

  469. is setting before us.

  470. In fact,

  471. it's good to come to terms

  472. with this

  473. younger than that.

  474. One of my children

  475. reminded me recently

  476. of a time

  477. when they were maybe

  478. eight or nine years old

  479. that I had,

  480. apparently,

  481. as matter-of-factly

  482. as I could

  483. at the kitchen table,

  484. said to them,

  485. there's my three children there,

  486. and I said,

  487. you know you're going

  488. to die someday.

  489. Great parenting, right?

  490. And this particular child,

  491. just like a month ago,

  492. told me that she remembered that

  493. and that as an eight

  494. or nine-year-old,

  495. that struck her.

  496. She hadn't realized that yet,

  497. and something registered for her.

  498. Now, you might be sitting there

  499. thinking this morning,

  500. man,

  501. why are you laboring this point?

  502. I come to church

  503. to get encouraged.

  504. And part of me

  505. wants to say sorry,

  506. but the wiser part of me

  507. wants to very quickly say,

  508. no, I'm not sorry at all.

  509. It's really important

  510. we think about this.

  511. Now, I learned

  512. in my church history classes

  513. way back when I was in seminary

  514. that certain medieval theologians

  515. would regularly place

  516. a human skull

  517. on the shelf

  518. above where they were studying

  519. so that it would remind them

  520. of the brevity of their lives.

  521. In our own history

  522. as a culture,

  523. as a country,

  524. it was common practice

  525. to tell about 70 or 80 years ago

  526. for a church to have a graveyard

  527. right next to the church building

  528. so that every Sunday

  529. there would be a regular reminder

  530. of this truth.

  531. Listen, God's word

  532. is very clear here.

  533. Life is short.

  534. We will die.

  535. And actually,

  536. that raises

  537. a very interesting,

  538. philosophical,

  539. kind of existential question.

  540. Why?

  541. Because somehow

  542. the brevity of our lives,

  543. our mortality,

  544. just doesn't feel right.

  545. We resist it.

  546. There's something in us

  547. that is not easily resolved

  548. with that reality.

  549. Why is death so hard?

  550. Why is there death?

  551. Why is life so short?

  552. Well, verses 7 through 11

  553. tell us.

  554. They answer that question.

  555. I just want you to know

  556. these verses are not easy.

  557. They're not easy to understand,

  558. but then once you understand them,

  559. they're not easy to accept.

  560. Good verses 7 through 11.

  561. For we are brought to an end

  562. by your anger.

  563. By your wrath,

  564. we are dismayed.

  565. You have set our iniquities before you,

  566. our secret sins,

  567. in the light of your presence.

  568. For all our days pass away

  569. under your wrath.

  570. We bring our years to an end

  571. like a sigh.

  572. The years of our life are 70

  573. or even by reason of strength 80,

  574. yet their span is but toil and trouble.

  575. They are soon gone and we fly away.

  576. Who considers the power of your anger

  577. and your wrath

  578. according to the fear of you?

  579. Listen.

  580. Verses 7, 9, and 11

  581. give us an explanation

  582. for the shortness of life.

  583. Now let's be very careful here.

  584. These verses are easy to misunderstand.

  585. When verse 7 says,

  586. we are brought to an end by your anger,

  587. that is not talking about some

  588. kind of event of God's active anger

  589. directed toward me during my life

  590. like some kind of malevolent deity

  591. striking me dead.

  592. That is talking about a decision,

  593. a judgment that God made

  594. in his righteousness,

  595. the result of which is

  596. our mortality

  597. and the brevity of our lives.

  598. There was a little clue to this

  599. back in verse 3.

  600. Look there.

  601. You return man to dust

  602. and you say,

  603. return, O children of man.

  604. Does that remind you of anything?

  605. Turn back just for a moment

  606. to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  607. You remember after Adam and Eve

  608. sinned in the Garden of Eden,

  609. God came and he pronounced a curse

  610. and part of that curse to Adam

  611. are these words.

  612. Genesis 3 verse 19,

    Genesis 3:19

  613. by the sweat of your face

  614. you shall eat bread

  615. till you return to the ground

  616. for out of it you were taken

  617. for you are dust

  618. and to dust you shall return.

  619. In Psalm 90,

  620. Moses is very clearly alluding

  621. to Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  622. which he wrote by the way.

  623. He would be very familiar

  624. with those words.

  625. And do you see that phrase

  626. back in Psalm 90 verse 3,

    Psalms 90:3

  627. O children of man?

  628. Do you know what the Hebrew word

  629. for man is there?

  630. Adam.

  631. Adam.

  632. So Moses is very clearly

  633. alluding to Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  634. and he has his mind on the curse,

  635. that righteous judgment

  636. that God made on Adam

  637. for his sin

  638. and we see that echoed

  639. in verse 10.

  640. The years of our life are 70

  641. or even by reason of strength 80,

  642. yet their span

  643. is but toil and trouble.

  644. There's the language

  645. of God's righteous judgment

  646. again in response to man's sin.

  647. That's why that reference

  648. to our sin in verse 8.

  649. You have set our iniquities

  650. before you.

  651. Our secret sins

  652. in the light of your presence.

  653. Do you see how that explains

  654. verses 7 and 9?

  655. For we are brought to an end

  656. by your anger.

  657. All our days pass away

  658. under your wrath.

  659. Our mortality

  660. and the shortness of our lives

  661. is a result of God's judgment

  662. as a consequence of our sin.

  663. And that also explains

  664. that question in verse 11.

  665. Who considers the power

  666. of your anger

  667. and your wrath

  668. according to the fear of you?

  669. In other words,

  670. Moses is saying,

  671. who thinks about this?

  672. Who makes that connection?

  673. You know, in all of my years

  674. I've never once

  675. had an unbeliever

  676. come up to me and say,

  677. you know,

  678. I'm really experiencing

  679. the wrath of God today

  680. as my life hastens

  681. towards its end.

  682. And yet that's exactly

  683. what's happening.

  684. The Apostle Paul says

  685. very clearly,

  686. the wrath of God

  687. is being revealed

  688. against all unrighteousness

  689. and a major part

  690. of that wrath being revealed

  691. is the brevity of our lives.

  692. The shortness of our lives.

  693. People don't typically think

  694. of the relationship

  695. between their mortality

  696. and God's sovereign power

  697. and His judgment.

  698. Most people are too busy

  699. living for the moment

  700. to think about that.

  701. Who considers

  702. the power of your anger

  703. according to the fear of you?

  704. Our mortality

  705. and the shortness

  706. of our life

  707. is the result

  708. of God's just judgment

  709. on the human race

  710. due to our sin

  711. and it puts us

  712. in this place of dismay.

  713. Did you see that

  714. in verse 7?

  715. We are dismayed.

  716. We think and we feel

  717. regarding the shortness

  718. of our lives,

  719. oh, how I wish

  720. it wasn't this way.

  721. So, point number one,

  722. life is short.

  723. That's not the way

  724. it was originally

  725. meant to be

  726. and we feel that.

  727. However,

  728. all is not lost.

  729. Verse 12.

  730. So,

  731. teach us to number our days

  732. that we may get

  733. a heart of wisdom.

  734. So, here's the second point.

  735. Live this short life wisely.

  736. Wisely.

  737. Live your short life wisely.

  738. First part of verse 12

  739. is simply reemphasizing

  740. the point that Moses

  741. has already made.

  742. Teach us to number our days.

  743. Teach us to recognize

  744. that our days are,

  745. in fact, numbered.

  746. Help us to realize that.

  747. That's the main thing

  748. that Moses is teaching

  749. in verses 1 through 11

  750. and here is,

  751. at the start of verse 12,

  752. he's simply asking God

  753. to help us get that point.

  754. Teach us to number our days.

  755. That's the main truth

  756. so far.

  757. But even in that restatement,

  758. Moses is beginning,

  759. I believe,

  760. to suggest

  761. what the rest of verse 12

  762. says explicitly

  763. so that

  764. we might get a heart

  765. of wisdom.

  766. Point number two,

  767. we want to live

  768. our short lives wisely.

  769. Life is short

  770. and everything,

  771. everything is at stake

  772. in this short life.

  773. Your life is like this, folks.

  774. It's gone.

  775. And that makes you,

  776. when you realize that,

  777. it makes you ask,

  778. why am I here?

  779. What is my life for?

  780. How should I live my life?

  781. And that calls for wisdom.

  782. The place God wants us to go

  783. with that reality

  784. is to wisdom.

  785. Teach us to number our days

  786. so that we might get a heart

  787. of wisdom.

  788. Now please notice,

  789. it's not,

  790. life is short,

  791. so

  792. party hard, man.

  793. And it's not,

  794. life is short,

  795. so

  796. just give in to despair.

  797. And it's not,

  798. life is short,

  799. so get as much stuff

  800. as you can

  801. or get all of the

  802. adventurous experiences

  803. that you can.

  804. You know that company

  805. that started

  806. the stand-up paddleboard craze?

  807. You know these

  808. paddleboards

  809. that you stand up on?

  810. The company that started that,

  811. it's called YOLO.

  812. You know what that stands for?

  813. Y-O-L-O?

  814. You only live once.

  815. I hate that.

  816. I mean,

  817. I really hate that.

  818. You only live once,

  819. life is short,

  820. so make sure to go paddleboarding.

  821. Or make sure to climb some mountain,

  822. or make sure to try this,

  823. or try that

  824. before your life is over.

  825. I've actually suggested

  826. to my children

  827. that we should start up

  828. an alternative paddleboard company

  829. and name it YALT.

  830. Not Y-O-L-O,

  831. but Y-A-L-T,

  832. YALT,

  833. which stands for

  834. you actually live twice.

  835. One short life

  836. with a lot at stake,

  837. so don't be foolish

  838. and limit your life

  839. to adventures

  840. and experiences

  841. and accomplishments

  842. or cynicism.

  843. And then a really long life

  844. called eternity.

  845. Two lives,

  846. the dot

  847. and the line.

  848. And Psalm 90 says,

  849. Moses says,

  850. I mean,

  851. this is ancient wisdom.

  852. Teach us to number our days

  853. so that we might get

  854. a heart of wisdom.

  855. So that we might live

  856. this one short life well.

  857. Be fully prepared

  858. for eternity.

  859. And the big question,

  860. of course,

  861. is how?

  862. How does that happen?

  863. What is living wisely?

  864. And the answer

  865. is right there

  866. in verse 14.

  867. And the rest of this psalm.

  868. Listen,

  869. Psalm 90 verse 12

    Psalms 90:12

  870. is not by any means

  871. talking about

  872. merely human wisdom.

  873. No,

  874. it's God's wisdom

  875. he's speaking of.

  876. This is being

  877. in right relationship

  878. with God,

  879. Him,

  880. being,

  881. our dwelling place.

  882. God's wisdom

  883. is true wisdom

  884. and it is found for us

  885. in only one place.

  886. Verse 14,

  887. satisfy us

  888. in the morning

  889. with your

  890. steadfast love.

  891. So that we might rejoice.

  892. and be glad

  893. all of our days.

  894. Listen,

  895. let's back up

  896. just a bit.

  897. Right at verse 13,

  898. something turns.

  899. I don't know

  900. if you noticed that

  901. when we were reading.

  902. Something dramatically turns.

  903. While Moses is very aware

  904. of the situation

  905. that we live in,

  906. that he's been talking about

  907. in the first 11 or 12 verses,

  908. he also knows

  909. that that's not

  910. the end of the story.

  911. There is something

  912. in him,

  913. something very strong

  914. in him

  915. that cries out,

  916. verse 13,

  917. return,

  918. O Lord,

  919. how long

  920. have pity

  921. on your servants.

  922. Translation,

  923. do something,

  924. God.

  925. Don't leave us

  926. in this situation.

  927. Have pity on us.

  928. In fact,

  929. he just continues on

  930. in that vein.

  931. The rest of this psalm

  932. is a prayer

  933. with Moses

  934. pleading with God.

  935. I mean,

  936. you could take those words,

  937. O Lord,

  938. from verse 13

  939. and just distribute them

  940. down to every verse

  941. from that point on.

  942. Verse 14,

  943. O Lord,

  944. satisfy us.

  945. O Lord,

  946. make us glad.

  947. Verse 15,

  948. verse 17,

  949. O Lord,

  950. let your favor

  951. be upon us.

  952. O Lord,

  953. do something

  954. to save us.

  955. And that is not

  956. just some desperate

  957. prayer in the dark.

  958. Moses knows

  959. what he's asking for.

  960. He knows what he wants

  961. and he knows

  962. what he needs

  963. the Lord to do.

  964. It is best summarized

  965. there in verse 14.

  966. In fact,

  967. this is one of the

  968. great summarizing

  969. verses of the Bible.

  970. Satisfy us

  971. in the morning

  972. with your steadfast love

  973. so that we might rejoice

  974. and be glad

  975. all of our days.

  976. That's what is needed.

  977. Now,

  978. the key thing there

  979. is that little

  980. two-word phrase,

  981. steadfast love.

  982. It's actually

  983. just one word

  984. in Hebrew

  985. and it's a beautiful word.

  986. It's the word hesed.

  987. When I say beautiful,

  988. I don't necessarily mean

  989. beautiful sounding,

  990. although I'm sure

  991. after people understood

  992. what it meant.

  993. They came to love

  994. that word.

  995. Sometimes that word

  996. is translated into English

  997. by the word mercy,

  998. sometimes by loving kindness.

  999. You might see that

  1000. in your Bible,

1001. but I think the better

  1002. translation is this one,

  1003. steadfast love.

  1004. It speaks of God's

  1005. eternal,

  1006. unbreakable commitment

  1007. to love his people.

  1008. Grounded in his being,

  1009. in his character,

  1010. in his heart,

1011. it speaks of his eternal

  1012. and absolutely reliable love.

1013. Sometimes it is spoken of

  1014. as his covenant love.

  1015. But the key idea

  1016. is the love

  1017. that flows out

  1018. of his heart

  1019. of love

  1020. for his people.

  1021. You see,

  1022. despite the reality

  1023. of his judgment,

  1024. there is still

  1025. this commitment

  1026. of God

  1027. to love his people.

  1028. And you see that,

  1029. how critical that is

  1030. to the thought

  1031. of verse 14.

  1032. And satisfy us

  1033. with your steadfast love

1034. so that we can rejoice

  1035. and be glad

  1036. all of our days.

  1037. You can feel

  1038. the weight of that,

  1039. especially after what

  1040. verses 1 through 12

  1041. have said.

  1042. It's not just critical

  1043. to the thought

  1044. of verse 14.

  1045. It's critical

  1046. to our existence.

  1047. We have been wrecked,

  1048. just devastated

  1049. by our sin

  1050. and by God's judgment.

  1051. Our lives are short

  1052. and we sense

  1053. that's not the way

  1054. it's supposed to be.

  1055. Our lives are filled

  1056. with toil and trouble.

  1057. And we sense

  1058. that's not the way

  1059. it's supposed to be

  1060. and we live all

  1061. of our days

  1062. under the judgment

  1063. of God

  1064. with the reality

  1065. of death

  1066. always there

  1067. whether we think

  1068. about it or not.

  1069. So we cry out,

  1070. O Lord,

  1071. have pity.

  1072. Rescue us.

  1073. Bring us out

  1074. of the hopelessness

  1075. of all of that.

  1076. Show some favor

  1077. to us.

  1078. Instead of dismaying us,

  1079. satisfy us.

  1080. And we know

  1081. what will do that.

  1082. At least Moses knows.

  1083. It's your love

  1084. for us, O Lord.

  1085. the expression

  1086. of the demonstration

  1087. of your deep-hearted

  1088. commitment to love

  1089. your people,

  1090. your steadfast love.

1091. That is the only thing

  1092. that will cause

1093. a people who have been

  1094. so devastated by sin

  1095. and by your judgment

  1096. to be rescued

  1097. and therefore

1098. to be able to rejoice,

  1099. in fact,

  1100. to be glad

  1101. all of our days.

  1102. The expression

  1103. of the demonstration

  1104. of God's heart

  1105. of love,

  1106. his purpose

  1107. of love,

  1108. his promise

  1109. to love

  1110. his people.

  1111. Some time ago,

  1112. a friend of mine

  1113. shared this story

  1114. from his own life.

  1115. Now, admittedly,

  1116. it wasn't the most

  1117. dire of circumstances,

  1118. but he felt it.

1119. And I think we can relate

1120. as we listen to this,

  1121. and it serves wonderfully

  1122. to illustrate the point

1123. that I'm trying to make

  1124. from Psalm 90,

    Psalms 90:14

  1125. verse 14.

  1126. Here's what he said.

  1127. When I was going

  1128. from high school

  1129. to college,

  1130. I was going

  1131. to a university

  1132. in a town

  1133. I had never visited,

  1134. a college I had never seen,

1135. and my father took me.

  1136. We were driving

1137. from St. Louis to Chicago,

  1138. driving up Highway 55,

  1139. and I started out

  1140. real excited,

  1141. talkative,

1142. but the closer we got

  1143. to the university,

1144. the more scared I got.

  1145. At some point,

1146. my father looked over to me

  1147. and said,

  1148. you're scared,

  1149. aren't you?

  1150. And I said,

  1151. I am.

  1152. We were driving

  1153. up Highway 55,

1154. we were in the cornfields

  1155. of southern Illinois,

  1156. and my father simply

1157. pulled off to the side

  1158. of the road,

  1159. stopped the car,

  1160. turned off the engine,

  1161. and he said,

  1162. now,

  1163. you look at me.

  1164. You are my son,

  1165. and nothing is going

  1166. to change that.

  1167. I don't know

1168. if you will do well

  1169. at that school.

  1170. I don't know

1171. if you will do poorly,

  1172. but my home

  1173. is always your home.

  1174. I am your father,

  1175. and nothing you do,

1176. nothing you fail to do

1177. is going to change that.

  1178. I love you.

  1179. You are mine.

1180. He goes on to say,

1181. did that take all the problems

  1182. and struggles away?

  1183. No,

1184. but it was a comfort,

  1185. and it was security,

  1186. and ultimately,

  1187. it was strength.

1188. And then he makes this point.

1189. God says to his people,

  1190. I love you,

  1191. and you are mine.

  1192. I have loved you

  1193. with an everlasting love,

1194. and I have called you

  1195. with loving kindness.

  1196. What you do

  1197. did not get you

  1198. into that relationship

  1199. with me,

  1200. and what you do

  1201. will not get you

  1202. out of that relationship

  1203. with me.

  1204. You are mine.

  1205. This is God's commitment

  1206. to us.

1207. It is God's steadfast love

  1208. for us,

1209. and I want to just

  1210. come right out now

  1211. and say it.

  1212. That steadfast love

  1213. from God

  1214. for his people

  1215. is expressed.

  1216. It is demonstrated.

  1217. It is shown

  1218. particularly

  1219. in Jesus.

  1220. The whole Old Testament

  1221. anticipates it.

  1222. The New Testament

  1223. celebrates it.

  1224. It's there

  1225. in his coming.

  1226. It's there

  1227. in his living

  1228. a perfectly righteous life

  1229. for us

  1230. in our place.

  1231. You know,

  1232. we make so much

  1233. of the fact

  1234. that Jesus died

  1235. in our place,

  1236. and he did,

  1237. but his life

1238. was in our place as well.

  1239. He fulfilled

  1240. all righteousness

  1241. for us,

  1242. and then,

  1243. yes,

1244. he died in our place

  1245. swallowing up

  1246. the judgment

  1247. of death

  1248. so that those

  1249. who run to him

  1250. and trust in him,

  1251. their lives

  1252. are no longer defined

  1253. by being under

  1254. the judgment of God.

  1255. What a difference.

  1256. What good news.

  1257. God's judgment

  1258. on us

  1259. poured out

  1260. on Christ

  1261. in our place.

  1262. God's mercy shown.

  1263. God's steadfast love

  1264. demonstrated,

  1265. and because of that,

  1266. instead of being

  1267. under the sentence

  1268. of death,

  1269. we have life.

  1270. Listen,

  1271. if God doesn't show

  1272. his love for us,

  1273. we're still in verse 7

  1274. and verse 9.

1275. We are brought to an end

  1276. by your anger.

1277. All our days pass away

  1278. under your wrath.

  1279. If God doesn't show

  1280. his love for us,

  1281. we're stuck

  1282. in verse 10.

  1283. And then,

  1284. the terrifying prospect

  1285. of eternity

  1286. separated from God.

  1287. But now,

  1288. because God

  1289. so loved the world

  1290. that he gave

  1291. his only begotten son

  1292. so that whoever

  1293. believes in him

  1294. should not perish

  1295. but have everlasting life.

  1296. God's steadfast love.

  1297. And instead of

  1298. not giving any thought

  1299. about these things

  1300. like verse 11,

  1301. now we say,

  1302. verse 16,

  1303. let your work.

  1304. That's speaking of

  1305. God's salvation,

  1306. his steadfast love

  1307. shown in Christ.

  1308. Let your work

1309. be shown to your servants

  1310. and your glorious power

  1311. to their children.

1312. Jesus is what we need.

  1313. And living with wisdom

  1314. in this short life

  1315. is facing our need

  1316. and then looking

  1317. to God's steadfast love

  1318. for us in Christ.

1319. That's what we are able

  1320. to be satisfied by.

  1321. And I don't know

1322. that there is a greater

  1323. statement of that

  1324. in all the Bible

1325. than in the book of Romans,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1326. chapter 8.

  1327. Just listen to these

  1328. incredible words.

1329. What then shall we say

  1330. to these things?

1331. If God is for us,

1332. who can be against us?

1333. Who shall bring any charge

  1334. against God's elect?

1335. It is God who justifies.

  1336. Who is to condemn?

1337. Christ Jesus is the one

  1338. who died,

  1339. more than that,

  1340. who was raised,

1341. who is at the right hand

  1342. of God,

  1343. who indeed is interceding

  1344. for us.

  1345. For I am sure

  1346. that neither death,

  1347. nor life,

  1348. nor angels,

  1349. nor rulers,

  1350. nor things present,

  1351. nor things to come,

  1352. nor powers,

  1353. nor height,

  1354. nor depth,

  1355. nor anything else

  1356. in all creation

1357. will be able to separate us

1358. from the love of God

  1359. in Christ Jesus,

  1360. our Lord.

  1361. In Christ,

  1362. in Jesus,

1363. the steadfast love of God,

  1364. the eternal kindness

1365. of God for his people

  1366. has come to us.

1367. And it is the ground

  1368. we stand on

  1369. to say,

  1370. with David,

  1371. as individual Christians,

  1372. and,

  1373. may I say,

  1374. as a local gathering

  1375. gathering of believers.

  1376. It's that ground

  1377. we stand on

  1378. to say,

1379. satisfy us in the morning

  1380. with your steadfast love,

  1381. that we may rejoice

  1382. and be glad

  1383. all of our days.

  1384. Make us glad

  1385. for as many days

1386. as you have afflicted us,

  1387. for as many years

1388. as we have seen evil.

  1389. Let your work

1390. be shown to your servants

  1391. and your glorious power

  1392. to their children.

  1393. Let the favor

  1394. of the Lord,

  1395. our God,

  1396. be upon you.

  1397. and establish

1398. the work of your hands.

  1399. Yes,

  1400. establish the work

  1401. of our hands.

  1402. Even in this life,

1403. with all of its uncertainties

  1404. and its ambiguities

  1405. and its frustrations,

  1406. even in this life

  1407. with its struggles,

  1408. there can be gladness

  1409. in our days

  1410. because of the steadfast

  1411. love of God

1412. poured out in our lives

  1413. in and through

  1414. Jesus Christ,

  1415. the King,

  1416. to Him be glory.

  1417. Amen.

  1418. Let's pray together.

  1419. Father, thank You

  1420. for Your Word.

1421. Thank You for Your Spirit

  1422. who takes it

1423. and brings it to us.

1424. Thank You for Your church,

  1425. gathering of believers.

1426. I pray that You would

  1427. take Your Word

  1428. and by Your Spirit

  1429. bring it to us

  1430. as Your people

  1431. and give us strength.

  1432. Put faith in us.

  1433. Help us to obey.

  1434. Help us to persevere,

  1435. we pray.

  1436. In Jesus' name.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Amen.

  1443. Amen.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Amen.

  1446. Amen.

  1447. Amen.

  1448. Amen.

  1449. Amen.

  1450. Amen.

  1451. Amen.

  1452. Amen.

  1453. Amen.

  1454. Amen.

  1455. Amen.

  1456. Amen.

  1457. Amen.
