  1. Well, there's a certain kind of person that I've found myself more and more over the last several years

  2. just very compelled to be around.

  3. This type of person seems to navigate his or her life just extremely well.

  4. This person is not free of trials and tribulations.

  5. In fact, maybe they have more than your average person,

  6. and yet they seem to just have this fluid ease about the way that they deal and interact with life.

  7. It's just really compelling for me.

  8. You know, there's been many people recently on this pulpit, and we have leadership in this church,

  9. people that just, I want to be around because they do life in a certain way.

  10. And what's interesting about this is it doesn't require being a certain age.

  11. Young and old can qualify for this.

  12. Rich and poor, really scholarly academic types,

  13. and the simple-minded people who just kind of, you know,

  14. maybe they're not a brilliant scholar,

  15. but yet they can still possess this type of life that's so compelling.

  16. All shapes and sizes of people possess this kind of life.

  17. And we could probably describe it in any number of ways.

  18. There's a lot of ways, resourcefulness, certain giftedness of living,

  19. maybe according to the world more of a street smartness,

  20. full of common sense, full of life experience.

  21. We're compelled to be near them, aren't we?

  22. We want to know what they have.

  23. We want to know what their secret is to living life in a way that just seems to make things go easier, smoothly.

  24. They roll with the punches, you could say.

  25. We want to know what is that secret?

  26. How can they make this crazy, chaotic thing called life seem so easy?

  27. How can the trials and tribulations they have encountered not render them unstable,

  28. ineffective, bitter, fearful, anxious?

  29. Well, friends, I think the common denominator in all of these people is wisdom.

  30. But not just any kind of wisdom, right?

  31. There's plenty of people in the world who are great businessmen and make tons of money

  32. because they're wise in a certain business sense of that word.

  33. There's salesmen that can push a product with such ease and grace

  34. that you're lining up to buy that vacuum.

  35. You can even be a wise thief, right?

  36. If you have enough knowledge to not get caught and to get the things that you want and steal them,

  37. you can be wise in one sense.

  38. But that's not the wisdom I'm talking about this morning.

  39. I'm talking about biblical wisdom.

  40. This wisdom we see always has to do with righteous living.

  41. It's a from-above wisdom, as James calls it, that is first pure and peaceable, gentle, open to reason,

  42. full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

  43. It's a wisdom whose source is the Lord, and it's one-directional from Him to His people.

  44. It's a wisdom that is to be received by grace.

  45. I believe that it's this wisdom that the Bible teaches that allows God's people to navigate life well,

  46. to live rightly before the Lord.

  47. Now, this wisdom is the major concern of the book of Proverbs.

  48. I invite you to open there this morning.

  49. Let me read just the first introductory verses of chapter 1 to get us kind of a grounding for where we're headed,

  50. and then we'll spend our time in the second chapter of Proverbs.

  51. But this is how Solomon opens this book of wisdom.

  52. The Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel.

  53. To know wisdom and instruction.

  54. To understand words of insight.

  55. To receive instruction and wise dealing in righteousness, justice, and equity.

  56. To give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth.

  57. Let the wise hear and increase in learning.

  58. And the one who understands obtain guidance.

  59. To understand a proverb and a saying,

  60. the words of the wise and their riddles.

  61. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

  62. Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

  63. So we can now flip over to chapter 2,

  64. and let me just say that we find in the first several chapters up through chapter 9 of Proverbs,

  65. a lot of lectures from a father to his son,

  66. teaching wisdom, instructing his son the way to go.

  67. So parents, I think immediately you can relate to this urgency, I imagine.

  68. In knowing that your children are going to go out into a world that's full of disorder and disarray and sin and wickedness and brokenness.

  69. And you feel the urgency.

  70. You want your children to know wisdom.

  71. You want them to know the way to go.

  72. So that they will be upright.

  73. So that they will live their lives well.

  74. You can feel the desire present in this passage from this father,

  75. concerned with his own son's well-being.

  76. You want to see your children walking rightly with the Lord, making good decisions.

  77. That's the emotion I think we see as we come to this text.

  78. But it's not just for fathers to sons or mothers to daughters or parents to children.

  79. It's not just to show us how a parent should instruct a child.

  80. It's not simply for the young in the room.

  81. No, this passage is here for all of God's people.

  82. This is the emotional and urgent appeal of a heavenly father to his spiritual children.

  83. As God's children, this is the appeal I think that God makes for us today as we come to this passage.

  84. It's this.

  85. Since wisdom is so valuable, you should make it your priority to acquire it in abundance.

  86. Stockpile it for a rainy day.

  87. There's no expiration date of wisdom.

  88. Invest your spiritual disciplines to cultivate it in your lives.

  89. Gift it generously to other people so that they would be blessed too by wisdom.

  90. Again, since wisdom is so valuable,

  91. you should make it your priority to acquire it in abundance.

  92. So let me read this text for us and pray and then we will dive in to see what it says.

  93. This is Proverbs chapter 2.

    Proverbs 2 chapter mention

  94. My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you,

  95. making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding,

  96. yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,

  97. if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures,

  98. then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

  99. For the Lord gives wisdom from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

  100. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright.

  101. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,

  102. guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.

  103. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity,

  104. every good path.

  105. For wisdom will come into your heart and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.

  106. Discretion will watch over you.

  107. Understanding will guard you,

  108. delivering you from the way of evil,

  109. from men of perverted speech,

  110. who forsake the paths of uprightness,

  111. to walk in the ways of darkness,

  112. who rejoice in doing evil

  113. and delight in the perverseness of evil.

  114. Men whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.

  115. So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman,

  116. from the adulteress with her smooth words,

  117. who forsakes the companion of her youth

  118. and forgets the covenant of her God.

  119. For her house sinks down to death

  120. and her paths to the departed.

  121. None who go to her come back,

  122. nor do they regain the paths of life.

  123. So you will walk in the way of the good

  124. and keep to the paths of the righteous.

  125. For the upright will inhabit the land

  126. and those with integrity will remain in it.

  127. But the wicked will be cut off from the land

  128. and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.

  129. Let's pray.

  130. Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for this morning.

  131. We're so grateful that Your Word instructs us.

  132. Father, I pray that we would all leave here

  133. desiring wisdom more

  134. after what Your Word instructs us to do this morning.

  135. God, would You feed Your people.

  136. Graciously be with us.

  137. In Jesus' name, amen.

  138. Amen.

  139. So to go through this passage,

  140. we're really just going to follow the Father's logic

  141. in instructing His Son.

  142. Along the way, we're going to see

  143. the conditions of this appeal He's making,

  144. and then we're going to see some benefits of that,

  145. and then we're going to see the Father's conclusion

  146. based on what He knows to be true.

  147. So conditions, benefits, conclusion.

  148. The conditions we see right up front,

  149. verses 1 to 4.

  150. Notice all the ifs.

  151. If you receive my words.

  152. Verse 3, if you call out for insight.

  153. Verse 4, if you seek it like silver.

  154. The Father's saying,

  155. there's effort involved in what I'm trying to tell you.

  156. My son, you've got to put forth some work here.

  157. I think the progression kind of goes like this.

  158. First, there needs to just be a desire.

  159. We should ask ourselves right up front,

  160. do I desire wisdom?

  161. Is it in my heart of hearts to yearn for this good thing,

  162. this biblical wisdom that instructs me

  163. how to live rightly before God?

  164. The Father makes the appeal in verse 2 saying,

  165. making your ear attentive to wisdom

  166. and inclining your heart to understanding.

  167. See that?

  168. It's listen to these instructions.

  169. Listen to my words.

  170. And He calls them commandments,

  171. not because He's a mean kind of dictator father,

  172. but He's received them from the living God.

  173. They're God's commandments.

  174. Through the Father to the Son.

  175. Make your ear attentive to wisdom,

  176. inclining your heart to understanding.

  177. Stretch out your heart.

  178. Desire wisdom.

  179. And we see in verse 3 that there's a progression.

  180. Now it's, yes, if you call out for wisdom.

  181. Hear wisdom.

  182. Where are you, wisdom?

  183. Wisdom, I need you.

  184. Raise your voice for understanding.

  185. Oh, give me understanding.

  186. Then it goes on even further in verse 4.

  187. Seek it.

  188. Right?

  189. If you seek it like silver,

  190. search for it as for hidden treasures.

  191. See, wisdom is valuable.

  192. It's like silver.

  193. And at this point,

  194. he's probably not saying the second best metal,

  195. like, so then there's silver,

  196. but then there's gold.

  197. No, he's probably saying,

  198. here's the most precious thing I can think of.

  199. Seek it like that.

  200. Seek it like silver.

  201. It makes me think of Indiana Jones.

  202. I've been thinking about these movies a lot this week.

  203. You've got this,

  204. Harrison Ford plays this archaeologist.

  205. He's this professor at this university

  206. where the students don't seem to be the brightest bulbs in the drawer.

  207. And it seems like he does that

  208. so that he can kind of sustain this side hobby of his

  209. of seeking these artifacts.

  210. Right?

  211. And he's being chased by Nazis and tanks

  212. and, you know,

  213. all these crazy animals,

  214. lions and these other guys with guns

  215. and everybody wants him dead.

  216. And he's trying to get these artifacts.

  217. Right?

  218. And he's even willing to face his most deepest fear.

  219. Snakes.

  220. There's a point where he gets lowered down

  221. into the pit of these vipers.

  222. He hates snakes.

  223. He says it over and over throughout these movies.

  224. It's kind of corny.

  225. But he says,

  226. I hate snakes.

  227. I hate snakes.

  228. But he's willing to go into a den of snakes

  229. in order to find these religious artifacts.

  230. That's the picture I think this proverb gives us

  231. when we want to kind of capture

  232. what it means to seek wisdom.

  233. Seek it like that.

  234. Seek to obtain it like that.

  235. With ears.

  236. With a heart inclined towards it.

  237. With a mouth that cries out for it.

  238. With arms and legs and eyes that search for it.

  239. That's the conditions

  240. of acquiring wisdom.

  241. Of obtaining it.

  242. You've got to put forth the effort.

  243. You can't be the couch potato looking for it.

  244. I feel it right, young people in the room,

  245. to mention this.

  246. That you're in a really good time of your life

  247. to determine

  248. to seek this out.

  249. I think there's many of us

  250. who would be able to say

  251. with a hint of sorrow

  252. that I wish I would have found wisdom sooner.

  253. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long

  254. to get right with this.

  255. Don't let it slip by.

  256. You've got it right before you.

  257. You're in a great church.

  258. You've got good parents.

  259. You've got a lot of people that love you.

  260. This is instruction for you.

  261. So now let me keep moving us down here.

  262. We come to verse 5

  263. and we see the first of three major benefits

  264. of seeking wisdom.

  265. If you seek it,

  266. if you incline it,

  267. you're not understanding.

  268. If you call out,

  269. verse 5,

  270. then

  271. you will understand the fear of the Lord

  272. and find the knowledge of God.

  273. Well,

  274. I thought we were just talking about wisdom.

  275. Where's this knowledge of God stuff coming from?

  276. Where's this fear of the Lord coming from?

  277. What I find interesting here is

  278. that if you're not seeking wisdom

  279. in the right place,

  280. you're never going to find it.

  281. That's what this says.

  282. You can't go to the world.

  283. You can't turn on the news.

  284. You're not going to search Wikipedia

  285. and find the wisdom

  286. that the Bible wants people to have.

  287. You have to go to the source.

  288. See that in verse 6?

  289. For the Lord gives wisdom.

  290. Benefit number one,

  291. theological benefit.

  292. God gives wisdom

  293. to people who seek after it.

  294. Real wisdom.

  295. Lifelong wisdom.

  296. Righteousness.

  297. And justice and equity.

  298. Good wisdom.

  299. So you see that obtaining wisdom

  300. is a spiritual endeavor.

  301. You cannot find it apart from God

  302. no matter how much you want,

  303. no matter how much science

  304. may tell you otherwise.

  305. You cannot find true wisdom

  306. apart from God.

  307. I find it so amazing.

  308. We see what this tells us here about God.

  309. Here's the benefit.

  310. If you seek wisdom,

  311. you'll learn the fear of the Lord

  312. and then look who God is in this.

  313. It's glorious.

  314. Verses 6 through 8.

  315. For the Lord gives wisdom.

  316. From His mouth come knowledge

  317. and understanding.

  318. He stores up sound wisdom

  319. for the upright.

  320. He is a shield

  321. for those who walk in integrity,

  322. guarding the paths of justice,

  323. watching over the way

  324. of His saints.

  325. This is a really good God.

  326. He really loves His people.

  327. To do all of that

  328. for those that incline their ear

  329. to wisdom,

  330. who search it out.

  331. Friends, this is a God

  332. worth worshiping,

  333. devoting our lives to.

  334. He's glorious.

  335. He's really, really good.

  336. I find it helpful

  337. to imagine just for the briefest moment

  338. the alternative

  339. if God did not impart wisdom.

  340. Where would we turn?

  341. There's no wisdom trees

  342. in our backyard.

  343. We can't buy it

  344. at the local 7-Eleven.

  345. The old dead philosopher

  346. isn't going to tell you

  347. how to get it.

  348. God must give wisdom.

  349. The biblical wisdom

  350. that leads to right living,

  351. God alone provides.

  352. I want to help us

  353. with a commentator

  354. who has defined

  355. this fear of the Lord.

  356. I think it's just so helpful.

  357. This is what we're talking about

  358. in verse 5

  359. when it says,

  360. understand the fear of the Lord.

  361. He writes this,

  362. the fear of the Lord

  363. is the reverent confession

  364. and reverential acknowledgement.

  365. Here's the content of that.

  366. That Yahweh

  367. is the creator

  368. and sustainer

  369. of all life

  370. and the true giver

  371. of wisdom.

  372. It's a confession

  373. and acknowledgement

  374. that God has wisdom

  375. and he gives it.

  376. He's the only one.

  377. He goes on,

  378. this fundamental confession

  379. anchors the possibility

  380. of coming to understand

  381. all other elements of wisdom

  382. that accrue

  383. and to enjoy the blessings

  384. that accrue from its possession.

  385. So if you don't fear the Lord,

  386. if you don't confess him

  387. as the majestic creator

  388. of all things,

  389. forget about it.

  390. You're not going to find wisdom.

  391. Only the sustainer of life

  392. knows all things

  393. and can give it.

  394. knowledge of God

  395. is kind of similar to that.

  396. It's not simply

  397. an intellectual knowledge

  398. that is being talked about

  399. in verse 6 here.

  400. Again,

  401. it's this personal intimacy,

  402. this relational knowledge

  403. that leads again

  404. to right living,

  405. excuse me,

  406. right living,

  407. carrying out God's desires

  408. for our lives.

  409. There's one final benefit

  410. that we see here

  411. in 12 to 19.

  412. Kind of got dual figures in it,

  413. but it's all under this heading

  414. from verse 12,

  415. delivering you from

  416. the way of evil.

  417. Oh, excuse me,

  418. I skipped over something.

  419. Back up.

  420. Forget everything I just said there.

  421. Second benefit.

  422. See in verse 9,

  423. it's a practical benefit

  424. for obtaining wisdom.

  425. If you're seeking wisdom,

  426. verse 9,

  427. then you will understand

  428. righteousness

  429. and justice

  430. and equity

  431. every good path.

  432. I don't know about you,

  433. but life's hard.

  434. Life's confusing.

  435. Life's messy.

  436. I need something

  437. that's going to get me

  438. to understand

  439. every good path,

  440. how to navigate

  441. the complexities

  442. of this life.

  443. I need it.

  444. I desperately need it.

  445. If we're honest,

  446. we all do.

  447. That's what it says

  448. if you seek wisdom,

  449. if you prioritize

  450. obtaining it in abundance,

  451. you will understand

  452. righteousness

  453. and justice

  454. and equity

  455. every good path.

  456. Why is that?

  457. Why will pursuing wisdom

  458. lead to understanding

  459. every morally good path?

  460. Again,

  461. just like in the theological benefit,

  462. we have our answer

  463. in what follows

  464. verses 10 and 11,

  465. because wisdom

  466. will come into your heart.

  467. Knowledge will be pleasant

  468. to your soul.

  469. Discretion will watch over you.

  470. Understanding will guard you.

  471. That's why you'll understand

  472. every good path,

  473. because you'll have wisdom.

  474. It'll be in your heart.

  475. And knowledge,

  476. that'll be pleasant too.

  477. This seems to me

  478. to be conversion language.

  479. Language that's speaking

  480. of a spiritual awakening

  481. wrought by God.

  482. I don't know how wisdom

  483. will enter my heart

  484. unless God,

  485. the source of wisdom,

  486. puts it there.

  487. And I don't know

  488. how knowledge of Him

  489. and His good purposes

  490. and His righteousness

  491. will ever happen

  492. unless He changes my heart

  493. to desire those things to.

  494. And I love what it says

  495. after that.

  496. I love it.

  497. Discretion will watch over you.

  498. Understanding will guard you.

  499. Did you see that there's a connection

  500. with verse 8?

  501. We see God as a shield

  502. and He's guarding

  503. the paths of justice.

  504. He's watching over the way

  505. of His saints.

  506. And then verse 11,

  507. discretion will watch over you.

  508. Understanding will guard you.

  509. See, the writer here

  510. makes no qualms

  511. about saying,

  512. God will guard you

  513. and wisdom will guard you.

  514. Because ultimately,

  515. they're coming from

  516. the same origin.

  517. It's the same source.

  518. God gives wisdom.

  519. God guards.

  520. He's making a very close connection.

  521. You can't have

  522. this practical benefit

  523. of wisdom

  524. without the foundational

  525. and supreme theological benefit.

  526. If you don't have God,

  527. again,

  528. you can't have morality.

  529. You're not going to know justice

  530. unless God instructs you in justice.

  531. These benefits are closely linked.

  532. You can't divorce them

  533. from each other

  534. and expect that you're

  535. on the path of living

  536. and on the way of wisdom.

  537. So now,

  538. now benefit 3

  539. in verses 12 to 19.

  540. It's the benefit of deliverance.

  541. It's actually,

  542. it really butts up against

  543. verse 9

  544. and this every good path

  545. because not only is that

  546. in a positive light

  547. but then this,

  548. this other benefit,

  549. this delivering you

  550. in verse 12

  551. and you see that

  552. same thing again

  553. in verse 16.

  554. So you'll be delivered.

  555. The benefit of wisdom

  556. is that

  557. you'll be saved

  558. from really bad,

  559. destructive people

  560. in the way of evil.

  561. I remember

  562. a men's meeting

  563. at Crossway

  564. a few years back

  565. where the speaker

  566. said these words

  567. and they've stuck with me

  568. because I think

  569. they're sobering reality

  570. of something

  571. that's really,

  572. really true.

  573. He said this

  574. almost at the outset.

  575. You're only

  576. one bad decision

  577. away from

  578. ruining your life.

  579. It's hard to

  580. wrap my mind

  581. around that

  582. and I don't want

  583. to accept that

  584. maybe sometimes

  585. but

  586. but these verses

  587. here

  588. they seem to

  589. they caution

  590. us

  591. against something

  592. that we need

  593. to really

  594. take heed of.

  595. The benefit

  596. of deliverance.

  597. You see again

  598. this dual purpose

  599. there's evil men

  600. in verses 12 to 15

  601. and then you've got

  602. this strange woman

  603. in 16 through 19.

  604. These evil men

  605. notice that the first thing

  606. said about them

  607. is they're talking too

  608. but their speech

  609. is perverted.

  610. It's not the speech

  611. of good words

  612. and insight

  613. it's perversion.

  614. These men go from

  615. speaking a certain way

  616. to acting a certain way.

  617. They reject

  618. paths of righteousness

  619. to walk in ways

  620. of darkness.

  621. That's bizarre to me.

  622. If you give me

  623. the choice

  624. between a lighted path

  625. that has

  626. no trip hazards

  627. that has a

  628. cleanly swept

  629. ground

  630. or you

  631. give me a path

  632. that's full of

  633. darkness

  634. and trip hazards

  635. and

  636. boogeymen

  637. who go

  638. thumping the night

  639. I'm taking

  640. the lighted path.

  641. These guys

  642. reject it.

  643. They reject it.

  644. They're morally

  645. reprehensible

  646. in their speaking.

  647. They forsake wisdom.

  648. They choose folly.

  649. And by choosing

  650. the paths of folly

  651. they become folly.

  652. See that

  653. in verse 15?

  654. Their paths

  655. are crooked

  656. and they themselves

  657. then are devious.

  658. They're bent

  659. themselves

  660. because they choose

  661. bent paths.

  662. It's all rooted

  663. in a bad heart.

  664. They've chosen

  665. folly

  666. and they rejoice

  667. and shout joyfully

  668. to do evil.

  669. New Testament

  670. I think would

  671. call them

  672. the people

  673. the enemies

  674. of the cross of Christ

  675. in Philippians 3

  676. where Paul says

  677. that their God

  678. is their bellies

  679. they glory in their shame

  680. and they have hearts

  681. and minds

  682. set on earthly things.

  683. Same category

  684. of people.

  685. So I think it's

  686. for this reason

  687. that

  688. wisdom has to

  689. come into our hearts

  690. to deliver us

  691. from men like this.

  692. There's many paths

  693. of evil

  694. but there's one way

  695. of evil.

  696. It's a way

  697. that we cannot

  698. turn to.

  699. I think it's obvious

  700. that we can

  701. not take too much

  702. time to reflect

  703. and come up

  704. with any number

  705. of people

  706. and philosophies

  707. in this world

  708. of ours

  709. that endorse

  710. this type of living

  711. rejecting paths

  712. of uprightness

  713. for darkness.

  714. The Father's appeal

  715. is

  716. Son,

  717. stay away

  718. from those.

  719. And we see

  720. similarly now

  721. this strange woman

  722. who appears

  723. in 16 to 19

  724. ESV says

  725. forbidden

  726. and adulterous.

  727. You can see

  728. probably there's

  729. some footnotes

  730. strange foreign woman.

  731. Why is she strange?

  732. What's foreign

  733. about this woman?

  734. Is it because

  735. she's

  736. Syrian

  737. and not

  738. an Israelite?

  739. I don't think

  740. that that's

  741. what it's

  742. speaking about

  743. but morally

  744. foreign.

  745. She's

  746. ethically

  747. strange.

  748. She in the same

  749. way has

  750. a speech

  751. but her words

  752. are not

  753. perverted.

  754. They're smooth.

  755. They're flattering.

  756. They're slick.

  757. They make ears

  758. feel nice.

  759. This word

  760. smooth

  761. I find interesting.

  762. It's taken

  763. from the same

  764. word that's

  765. used to describe

  766. the five stones

  767. that David

  768. picked out

  769. of the brook

  770. to sling

  771. at Goliath.

  772. Really good

  773. that stones

  774. are aerodynamic

  775. and slick

  776. and smooth.

  777. Really bad

  778. when people

  779. have words

  780. that are smooth.

  781. They're deceitful.

  782. They're ruinous.

  783. Notice in verse 17

  784. that this woman

  785. is forsaking

  786. the companion

  787. of her youth.

  788. Her spouse.

  789. she's forgetting

  790. the covenant

  791. of her God.

  792. She made vows

  793. to her husband

  794. in front of

  795. God

  796. and she's

  797. forsaking them

  798. in order to

  799. welcome

  800. this

  801. adulterous

  802. relationship.

  803. But notice

  804. her end

  805. and notice

  806. the end

  807. of those

  808. who go

  809. with her.

  810. For her house

  811. sinks down

  812. to death

  813. and her paths

  814. to the departed.

  815. None who go

  816. to her

  817. come back

  818. nor do they

  819. regain the paths

  820. of life.

  821. It's a scary

  822. situation

  823. friends.

  824. It's a way

  825. of evil

  826. that has

  827. men and women

  828. on it

  829. who are

  830. interested

  831. in

  832. choosing ways

  833. that reject

  834. God's goodness

  835. His righteousness.

  836. People who

  837. at times

  838. may be a lot

  839. more compelling

  840. to associate

  841. with than we

  842. may admit.

  843. Avoid it.

  844. wisdom

  845. delivers you

  846. from these

  847. people.

  848. Wisdom

  849. delivers you

  850. from the

  851. way of

  852. evil.

  853. I think

  854. it's helpful

  855. in talking

  856. about this

  857. adulterous

  858. briefly to

  859. remind us

  860. all

  861. of Jesus'

  862. words

  863. in the

  864. Gospel of

  865. Matthew.

  866. He says

  867. that if you

  868. even look

  869. with lust

  870. in your

  871. heart,

  872. you set

  873. your eyes

  874. on a

  875. woman with

  876. lust

  877. in your

  878. heart,

  879. you've

  880. already

  881. committed

  882. adultery.

  883. First and

  884. foremost,

  885. it's a

  886. hard issue.

  887. Wisdom

  888. delivers

  889. from the

  890. flattery

  891. and the

  892. seduction

  893. of adultery.

  894. So basically

  895. in these

  896. benefits,

  897. we've seen

  898. the progress,

  899. the essence

  900. of this

  901. is get

  902. wisdom

  903. so you'll

  904. know every

  905. good path

  906. so that

  907. you'll be

  908. saved from

  909. evil.

  910. Finally,

  911. we look

  912. at the

  913. summary of

  914. the Father's

  915. instruction,

  916. verses 20

  917. to 22.

  918. Let me

  919. just read

  920. these for

  921. us.

  922. So you

  923. will walk

  924. in the

  925. way of

  926. the good

  927. and keep

  928. to the

  929. paths

  930. of the

  931. righteous.

  932. For the

  933. upright will

  934. inhabit the

  935. land and

  936. those with

  937. integrity

  938. will remain

  939. in it,

  940. but the

  941. wicked will

  942. be cut

  943. off from

  944. the land

  945. and the

  946. treacherous

  947. will be

  948. rooted

  949. out of

  950. it.

  951. There's

  952. two ways

  953. displayed here.

  954. Only two.

  955. The way

  956. of moral

  957. uprightness,

  958. integrity,

  959. wisdom,

  960. the way

  961. of wickedness

  962. and treachery

  963. and folly.

  964. Proverbs

  965. is not

  966. ultimately

  967. concerned about

  968. who's going

  969. to live

  970. and who's

  971. going to

  972. be thrown

  973. out.

  974. I don't

  975. believe.

  976. It's much

  977. more concerned

  978. about who

  979. will live

  980. and who

  981. will die.

  982. I think

  983. that's what

  984. we see here

  985. in verses

  986. 21 and

  987. 22.

  988. The

  989. righteous,

  990. the

  991. upright,

  992. they'll

  993. live.

  994. The

  995. wicked,

  996. treacherous,

  997. they'll be

  998. cut off and

  999. they'll be

  1000. rooted out.

  1001. They will

  1002. die.

  1003. That's why

  1004. wisdom

  1005. ultimately is

  1006. so important

  1007. because it's

  1008. a life and

  1009. death

  1010. situation

  1011. that we

  1012. face.

  1013. So why

  1014. seek wisdom

  1015. and devote

  1016. the effort

  1017. to it?

  1018. Our lives

  1019. are at stake.

  1020. Our lives

  1021. are at stake.

  1022. So we've

  1023. looked at

  1024. this father's

  1025. appeal to

  1026. his son for

  1027. wisdom.

  1028. It's not

  1029. son get

  1030. wisdom.

  1031. It's not

  1032. club him over

  1033. the head and

  1034. dumb kid get

  1035. wisdom already.

  1036. It's an

  1037. appeal, it's a

  1038. persuasive

  1039. argument.

  1040. He says,

  1041. you've got to

  1042. put forth

  1043. effort, you've

  1044. got to go get

  1045. wisdom my

  1046. son.

  1047. You hear the

  1048. emotion, the

  1049. urgency in my

  1050. voice.

  1051. You see the

  1052. benefits of

  1053. wisdom.

  1054. You see what

  1055. comes your way

  1056. when you seek

  1057. it and you find

  1058. the fear of the

  1059. Lord and you

  1060. know every good

  1061. path and you're

  1062. delivered from

  1063. this evil

  1064. and wickedness.

  1065. Friends,

  1066. wisdom is

  1067. priceless.

  1068. We cannot

  1069. esteem it too

  1070. highly.

  1071. We cannot

  1072. gather too

  1073. much of it.

  1074. It's not

  1075. going to weigh

  1076. us down.

  1077. It's going to

  1078. lighten us.

  1079. It's going to

  1080. free us to

  1081. live life well.

  1082. So let me

  1083. encourage you,

  1084. prioritize it

  1085. well.

  1086. Prioritize your

  1087. life so that you

  1088. might acquire

  1089. wisdom in

  1090. abundance.

  1091. It's that

  1092. valuable.

  1093. It deserves

  1094. that much of

  1095. our thinking

  1096. and our

  1097. lives.

  1098. I just have

  1099. three brief

  1100. points of

  1101. application to

  1102. close here.

  1103. First, I

  1104. realize that

  1105. there may be

  1106. some in this

  1107. room who do

  1108. not have a

  1109. relationship with

  1110. this God who

  1111. gives wisdom.

  1112. And maybe

  1113. you've been

  1114. hearing this talk

  1115. on wisdom and

  1116. you are compelled

  1117. to say, well,

  1118. wisdom sounds

  1119. pretty good.

  1120. My life doesn't

  1121. seem to work

  1122. out very often

  1123. and I don't

  1124. know how to

  1125. navigate things

  1126. and I seem

  1127. to be walking

  1128. this path with

  1129. evil men or

  1130. with this strange

  1131. woman.

  1132. Let me encourage

  1133. you then, my

  1134. friend.

  1135. Go to the

  1136. source of

  1137. wisdom.

  1138. Humble yourself

  1139. to fear the

  1140. Lord.

  1141. He will give

  1142. you a new

  1143. life, a new

  1144. heart.

  1145. New hope and

  1146. an ability to

  1147. live your life

  1148. with wisdom.

  1149. That's what

  1150. Jesus did when

  1151. He hung on the

  1152. cross.

  1153. He secured

  1154. wisdom for

  1155. His people.

  1156. He's good.

  1157. He's so good.

  1158. You can trust

  1159. Him with

  1160. everything and

  1161. you can bank

  1162. on the fact

  1163. that if you

  1164. come to Him

  1165. and you bow

  1166. your knee to

  1167. Him, He will

  1168. give you

  1169. wisdom.

  1170. You will know

  1171. how to navigate

  1172. this life and

  1173. you will be

  1174. welcomed into

  1175. the next.

  1176. with open

  1177. arms.

  1178. For those of

  1179. us brothers and

  1180. sisters in this

  1181. room, let me

  1182. just ask you

  1183. this question.

  1184. Will you

  1185. today prioritize

  1186. or reprioritize

  1187. the obtaining of

  1188. wisdom and

  1189. abundance?

  1190. this?

  1191. It's for the

  1192. sake of your

  1193. families,

  1194. marriages,

  1195. friends,

  1196. your coworkers,

  1197. your neighbors,

  1198. those people that

  1199. you haven't even

  1200. met yet.

  1201. For the sake of

  1202. the Lord,

  1203. tells you how to

  1204. live rightly

  1205. before Him

  1206. and before man.

  1207. Will you

  1208. prioritize it

  1209. today?

  1210. That's what this

  1211. text persuades us

  1212. to do.

  1213. Just one final

  1214. practical way that

1215. I think we can do

  1216. that this morning.

  1217. I've been looking

  1218. forward to for a

  1219. while now the

  1220. resuming of our

  1221. sermon series on

  1222. the Sermon on the

  1223. Mount.

  1224. We have in this

  1225. scripture from

  1226. Matthew 5 through

  1227. 7 the very

  1228. words of wisdom

  1229. incarnate.

  1230. Jesus tells us

  1231. how to live

  1232. rightly as

  1233. kingdom citizens.

  1234. And when we get

  1235. back there,

  1236. friends,

  1237. let's together

  1238. purpose to

  1239. listen to His

  1240. words,

  1241. to hang on

  1242. them,

  1243. to find life

  1244. in them.

  1245. He tells us

  1246. that the one who

  1247. obeys Him,

  1248. who listens to

  1249. His commands,

  1250. is the one who

  1251. builds his house

  1252. on a rock.

  1253. The one who

  1254. forsakes it

  1255. is build his

  1256. house on sand.

  1257. There's wisdom,

  1258. there's folly.

  1259. Jesus has the

  1260. words of wisdom.

  1261. Embrace them

  1262. because they have

  1263. life.

  1264. Let's pray.

  1265. Heavenly Father,

  1266. we thank You

  1267. for so kind

  1268. of a text

  1269. that would

  1270. call us

  1271. to love

  1272. and adore

  1273. and pursue

  1274. wisdom

  1275. with all of

  1276. our lives.

  1277. And we thank

  1278. You that You

  1279. didn't just

  1280. command us,

  1281. but You laid

  1282. out these

  1283. benefits for

  1284. us and You

  1285. told us what

  1286. ultimately is at

  1287. stake.

  1288. God, for each

  1289. of us,

  1290. would You grow

  1291. our desire for

  1292. wisdom more

  1293. and more

  1294. for a lifetime.

  1295. Particularly,

  1296. Lord, those

  1297. young people

  1298. who have an

  1299. opportunity to

  1300. live most of

  1301. their lives

  1302. from here on

  1303. out with

  1304. wisdom.

  1305. God, would You

  1306. just make it

  1307. possible to

  1308. acquire wisdom

  1309. from Your

  1310. mouth.

  1311. Give us

  1312. understanding,

  1313. we pray.

  1314. In Jesus'

  1315. name, amen.

  1316. Amen.
