  1. Has anybody heard of Fiddler on the Roof?

  2. It's a production, movie,

  3. and I can't remember if all Tevye's daughters sing this,

  4. but at least one of them does.

  5. Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.

  6. You know what I'm talking about?

  7. Well, over the last couple weeks,

  8. as I've been kind of simmering on Matthew 5-9,

  9. this isn't unusual to happen.

  10. I will grab a song I know,

  11. and I will rework it to meditate on the nature of the Scripture I'm thinking about.

  12. So over the last two weeks, I've been singing this song in light of Matchmaker.

  13. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  14. And so this past week, if you saw in your news feed or in the paper,

  15. another ISIS suicide bomber who has killed 300 more people,

  16. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  17. Friday morning, when I looked at my news feed and saw five dead Dallas police officers

  18. who were killed by a sniper,

  19. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  20. When I hear about some of the ridiculous things being said from political stump speeches,

  21. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  22. How long is this going to last?

  23. And what about typhoons?

  24. Forest fires, famines and floods.

  25. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  26. How long is this going to last?

  27. I've got friends who've gone through horrendous fallout from a heroin addiction.

  28. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  29. Heroin dealers in hospitals?

  30. Are you kidding me?

  31. That's local.

  32. And we all know what I'm about to say.

  33. All of us in this room have experienced relational strain.

  34. Hardship.

  35. Trouble.

  36. Maybe it's with your parents, whether you're a teenager,

  37. or maybe you're a grown adult still struggling with fallout from what happened with your parents.

  38. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  39. Trouble with your children.

  40. Trouble with your spouse.

  41. You have a dysfunctional family.

  42. You know what that really means?

  43. We lack peace.

  44. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  45. And then what goes on inside of you?

  46. There are people in this room who are angry.

  47. And given the opportunity, they rage.

  48. In this room.

  49. Fearful.

  50. Verging on paranoid.

  51. Anxious.

  52. Can't sleep.

  53. I have been there.

  54. Insecure.

  55. Maybe you've been diagnosed with OCD.

  56. Maybe you're depressed.

  57. Maybe you have cancer.

  58. It all leads to a lack of peace.

  59. Maybe disappointments have just piled up in your life,

  60. so you just reach the point where it's like,

  61. this life stinks.

  62. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make me some peace.

  63. Do you feel trapped?

  64. You're singing the song.

  65. This creation, under the bondage of sin,

  66. sings a longing song for peace.

  67. All of us, whether redeemed or not,

  68. we all sing it.

  69. Peacemaker, peacemaker, make us some peace.

  70. Peace.

  71. Here's what's amazing about the God of the Bible.

  72. Jesus Christ, God incarnate,

  73. the Prince of Peace,

  74. entered into this hostile,

  75. troublesome mess of a creation

  76. that we made.

  77. And He came to make peace.

  78. What's more amazing is how He did it.

  79. He hung on a cross and shed His blood

  80. in order to make peace.

  81. And now here's what He does.

  82. He takes naturally born rebels

  83. and transforms them by His grace.

  84. He rebirths them into supernatural peacemakers.

  85. You may be asking yourself the question,

  86. where are the peacemakers?

  87. Sitting in this room.

  88. By God's grace, we're the peacemakers.

  89. Blessed are the peacemakers.

  90. For they shall be called sons of God.

  91. Matthew 5.9

  92. I'm not sure if you know this,

  93. but God is on a glorious,

  94. eternal, international,

  95. peacemaking mission.

  96. And at your conversion,

  97. brother and sister in Christ,

  98. you were commissioned

  99. to be His peacemaker.

  100. Blessed are the peacemakers.

  101. For they shall be called sons of God.

  102. And so this morning,

  103. as we turn to Matthew 5.9,

  104. we're back in the Gospel of Matthew,

  105. back in the Sermon on the Mount,

  106. back into the Beatitudes.

  107. I want you to see two things.

  108. It's going to come out later in the sermon,

  109. but I want you to see two things this morning.

  110. You need to know what the Bible says about peace.

  111. You really do.

  112. And then you need to know what it means

  113. to be a peacemaker for God.

  114. So you need to know what the Bible says about peace,

  115. and you need to know what Jesus means

  116. by being a peacemaker.

  117. His peacemaker.

  118. Brother and sister in Christ,

  119. God has called you

  120. on a peacemaking mission with Him.

  121. So what does the Bible have to say about peace?

  122. Well, the first thing you know is,

  123. what does it mean by peace?

  124. What is biblical peace?

  125. Well, since ancient times,

  126. Jews would greet one another with shalom.

  127. And it's a little different than,

  128. yo, what's up?

  129. It's a pronouncement of blessing.

  130. Shalom means peace.

  131. And so when one Jew would greet another,

  132. they would say,

  133. they're saying,

  134. may the peace of God be upon you.

  135. May you be experienced the goodness of God

  136. in ever-creasing measure

  137. in every area of your life.

  138. Shalom to you.

  139. Peace.

  140. Peace.

  141. When we talk about peace,

  142. biblically,

  143. you've got to realize

  144. it's always connected to God.

  145. Always.

  146. Peace comes from God.

  147. He's the God of peace.

  148. And so what we deal with in our world

  149. is a world trying to make peace without God.

  150. But.

  151. As brothers and sisters in Christ,

  152. born of God,

  153. we make peace,

  154. first and foremost with God.

  155. He is our peace.

  156. So what is peace?

  157. Biblical peace

  158. is the experience

  159. of God's goodness

  160. in relationship to others.

  161. Biblical peace

  162. is the experience of God's goodness

  163. in relationship to others.

  164. And oftentimes we tend to,

  165. we think about peace

  166. as to what it is not.

  167. The absence of something.

  168. You know,

  169. when you don't experience

  170. tension in a relationship

  171. or there's no threats,

  172. no walking on eggshells,

  173. no division,

  174. no shame,

  175. no awkwardness,

  176. you're just like,

  177. oh, this is nice.

  178. No troubles here.

  179. You can think that's peace.

  180. But you know what?

  181. That's not biblical peace.

  182. That's an aspect of it.

  183. But peace,

  184. shalom,

  185. is fullness

  186. of goodness.

  187. Not just the absence

  188. of something.

  189. It's fullness.

  190. It's the experience

  191. of God's fullness.

  192. Fullness of trust.

  193. Fullness of love.

  194. Fullness of understanding

  195. and affection

  196. and acceptance

  197. and safety.

  198. Unity.

  199. Peace

  200. is the experience

  201. of God's goodness

  202. in relationships.

  203. So let me tell you

  204. the story of peace

  205. in the Bible.

  206. In your Bible

  207. from Genesis

  208. to Revelation,

  209. there is a theme

  210. running through it.

  211. It's the theme of peace.

  212. Peace begins

  213. in the garden, right?

  214. God

  215. at peace

  216. with Adam and Eve

  217. in the garden.

  218. And then,

  219. Revelation

  220. ends

  221. with the redeemed

  222. of God

  223. in the presence

  224. of God

  225. in the city

  226. of God.

  227. The new

  228. Jeru.

  229. Shalom.

  230. The city

  231. of peace.

  232. What I'm about

  233. to tell you

  234. is what

  235. the Bible

  236. says

  237. is where we live.

  238. The story

  239. of peace.

  240. Original peace

  241. starts in the garden.

  242. God created

  243. the heavens and earth.

  244. You remember

  245. Genesis 1?

  246. He kept on

  247. repeating something.

  248. Oh, this is good.

  249. This is good.

  250. Good, good, good.

  251. Good, good.

  252. Fullness of goodness.

  253. Goodness.

  254. And then God

  255. drops Adam and Eve

  256. in the garden

  257. and they're loving it.

  258. It's good.

  259. They experience

  260. goodness with God.

  261. Adam,

  262. think about this.

  263. Adam had

  264. a crystal clear

  265. conscience.

  266. He slept

  267. great.

  268. No fears.

  269. Full delight.

  270. All is great.

  271. Relationship

  272. with God.

  273. I mean,

  274. if Genesis 3,

  275. 8 is any hint,

  276. Adam and Eve

  277. would hang out

  278. with God

  279. in the cool

  280. of the day

  281. in the garden.

  282. That's awesome.

  283. So,

  284. all was good

  285. with God.

  286. All was good

  287. within oneself.

  288. And Adam

  289. and Eve

  290. experienced marriage

  291. like it was

  292. meant to be

  293. experienced

  294. from the beginning.

  295. God

  296. pulled Adam's

  297. rib out,

  298. created Eve,

  299. and handed Eve

  300. to Adam.

  301. And Adam

  302. said,

  303. Whoa,

  304. man!

  305. And they began

  306. to dance

  307. the dance.

  308. The dance

  309. of marriage.

  310. Adam leading,

  311. Eve following.

  312. And they were

  313. delighted.

  314. They were happy.

  315. At the end of

  316. Genesis 2,

  317. do you remember

  318. what it says?

  319. They were both

  320. naked

  321. and not ashamed.

  322. They knew each

  323. other fully.

  324. They were united

  325. at peace.

  326. No wrongs.

  327. No weirdness.

  328. No hostility.

  329. No trouble.

  330. Original peace.

  331. And then

  332. lost peace.

  333. Genesis 3

  334. rolls around.

  335. The serpent

  336. shows up.

  337. Adam and Eve

  338. sin.

  339. And you know

  340. what happens

  341. for the first time?

  342. You see this

  343. in Genesis 3,

  344. 8, 9, and 10.

  345. Do you remember

  346. what Adam did

  347. after he sinned?

  348. God comes down

  349. walking in the

  350. cool of the day.

  351. Adam, Adam,

  352. where are you?

  353. Do you remember

  354. what Adam did?

  355. Why did he hide?

  356. He was ashamed.

  357. For the first time,

  358. internal trouble,

  359. lack of peace,

  360. internal disintegration

  361. began Genesis 3.

  362. And we've all been

  363. dealing with it

  364. ever since.

  365. And it just didn't

  366. end internally.

  367. When God comes

  368. to hold Adam

  369. and Eve accountable,

  370. he says,

  371. Adam, what happened?

  372. And he's like,

  373. that woman

  374. made me do it.

  375. And then Eve said,

  376. that serpent thing

  377. made me do it.

  378. And when God

  379. speaks consequences

  380. on Eve and Adam,

  381. He introduces

  382. hostility into,

  383. He doesn't,

  384. they introduce

  385. hostility into

  386. their relationship.

  387. And God says,

  388. here's a consequence

  389. for it.

  390. Now, instead of

  391. dancing the dance

  392. in unity,

  393. they're going to be

  394. stepping on each

  395. other's does.

  396. They're going to be

  397. arguing about who's

  398. leading the dance.

  399. Conflict,

  400. hardship,

  401. frustration.

  402. Adam is going

  403. to be tempted

  404. to either abdicate

  405. or he's going

  406. to be a tyrant.

  407. Eve is going

  408. to be tempted

  409. to either take

  410. the reins from Adam

  411. or just be a doormat.

  412. peace lost.

  413. Peace lost.

  414. Peace lost.

  415. Peace lost.

  416. And then there's

  417. the relationship

  418. with creation.

  419. Before the fall,

  420. God's green earth

  421. gave in abundance

  422. and gave freely.

  423. Oh, it was good.

  424. It was good.

  425. Boysenberry trees,

  426. oh, full of berries.

  427. Drop right in your hands,

  428. succulent, wonderful.

  429. After the fall

  430. came the curse

  431. on the earth.

  432. Creation subjected

  433. to frustration.

  434. And now Adam and Eve

  435. would experience

  436. life on this planet

  437. in sweat,

  438. toiling for their food.

  439. And threat!

  440. Now grizzly bears

  441. became an issue.

  442. Threat!

  443. natural disasters

  444. were real.

  445. Worst of all,

  446. Adam and Eve

  447. were kicked out

  448. of the presence of God.

  449. Out you go

  450. from my presence.

  451. And we've all been

  452. living east of Eden

  453. ever since.

  454. Out of the presence

  455. of God.

  456. Original peace,

  457. lost peace,

  458. this is good news

  459. I'm about to tell you.

  460. In Genesis 3,

  461. when God is speaking

  462. to the serpent,

  463. He says something.

  464. He says,

  465. there's going to be

  466. enmity between

  467. your offspring

  468. and the offspring

  469. of the woman.

  470. And then He starts

  471. saying something

  472. really interesting.

  473. He starts talking

  474. about an offspring

  475. from Eve

  476. that will come

  477. and crush

  478. the serpent's head.

  479. though He

  480. will bruise

  481. His heel.

  482. That's called

  483. the proto-evangelium.

  484. The first gospel.

  485. The first speaking

  486. of Jesus coming

  487. to crush

  488. the head

  489. of Satan

  490. to bring peace.

  491. And so the Old Testament,

  492. you know what it is?

  493. We see the

  494. disintegrating effects

  495. of sin

  496. while there's

  497. this anticipation

  498. for this offspring

  499. of Eve

  500. who will come.

  501. The Messiah.

  502. And with Him

  503. will bring peace.

  504. And so we enter

  505. into the coming

  506. of Jesus.

  507. Christmas.

  508. The incarnation

  509. of the second person

  510. of the Trinity.

  511. The Prince of Peace

  512. has come.

  513. And what we learn

  514. from passages

  515. like Colossians 1,

  516. 19-23 is this.

  517. He came,

  518. lived a perfect life,

  519. died,

  520. shed His blood,

  521. was raised from the grave

  522. to make peace.

  523. To make peace

  524. with the biggest problem

  525. we got.

  526. Being separated

  527. from God.

  528. Jesus came

  529. and died on a cross

  530. to reconcile us

  531. to God

  532. through the blood

  533. of the cross.

  534. And with His coming,

  535. He makes it now

  536. possible

  537. for us

  538. to experience

  539. unity internally.

  540. Unity with other people.

  541. And eventually,

  542. He puts a hope in us

  543. for experiencing

  544. unity with this planet.

  545. What I love

  546. about the coming

  547. of Jesus

  548. is this.

  549. Our God

  550. just didn't stand around

  551. and throw a pity party

  552. and huff and puff.

  553. He entered

  554. our mess

  555. to make peace.

  556. And so,

  557. here we are living

  558. after the first coming

  559. of Jesus.

  560. And those of us

  561. who have bowed

  562. our knee to Jesus,

  563. who by faith

  564. believed,

  565. trusted

  566. in the finished work

  567. of Christ,

  568. we're at peace

  569. with God.

  570. It's what Ben read.

  571. Romans 5.1.

  572. Therefore,

  573. since you've been

  574. justified by faith,

  575. you have peace

  576. with God

  577. through our Lord

  578. Jesus Christ.

  579. But it's

  580. a partial peace.

  581. Though we're

  582. at peace with God,

  583. we still deal

  584. with our own stuff,

  585. we still deal

  586. with the stuff

  587. of others,

  588. and we still feel

  589. threat from this world.

  590. So,

  591. reconciled peace

  592. is a partial peace.

  593. But there's

  594. a perfect peace

  595. coming.

  596. So,

  597. we've seen

  598. original peace,

  599. lost peace,

  600. reconciled peace

  601. in Jesus.

  602. Perfect peace

  603. is coming.

  604. And perfect peace

  605. is unrestricted.

  606. Perfect peace

  607. is a fullness

  608. of God's goodness

  609. in relationship

  610. to Him,

  611. in relationship

  612. to yourself,

  613. in relationship

  614. to others,

  615. in relationship

  616. to this planet.

  617. When Jesus

  618. comes back,

  619. He's bringing

  620. with Him

  621. perfect peace.

  622. peace.

  623. Resurrected body

  624. for you,

  625. brother.

  626. Resurrected body

  627. for you,

  628. sister.

  629. No sinful

  630. inclination

  631. whatsoever.

  632. You're united

  633. internally.

  634. And then you're

  635. in the midst

  636. of people

  637. who have

  638. resurrected bodies,

  639. the redeemed

  640. of God

  641. from the ages,

  642. every tribe,

  643. tongue,

  644. and nation,

  645. all together

  646. with resurrected

  647. bodies.

  648. No fights,

  649. no divisions.

  650. Unity.

  651. We live in

  652. the New Jerusalem,

  653. the city of peace.

  654. No sweat,

  655. no threat.

  656. It's sweet

  657. and a treat.

  658. And of course,

  659. the greatest

  660. all aspects

  661. of the perfect

  662. peace is that

  663. we will actually

  664. be with the

  665. Prince of Peace.

  666. We will see Him

  667. face to face.

  668. He will wipe

  669. away tears.

  670. We're going to be

  671. with Him

  672. in His place

  673. forever.

  674. The story

  675. of peace

  676. in the Bible.

  677. You know

  678. what that means?

  679. Here's what

  680. that means.

  681. Here's what

  682. we need to be

  683. crystal clear on.

  684. The problem

  685. that causes

  686. all the trouble

  687. in the world.

  688. You know

  689. where the Bible

  690. identifies that?

  691. You know

  692. where the Bible

  693. locates that?

  694. You know

  695. where God

  696. says,

  697. okay,

  698. here is the

  699. source of all

  700. the troubles

  701. that you are

  702. experiencing.

  703. Do you know

  704. what the Bible

  705. says about that?

  706. God doesn't

  707. couch it in

  708. economics.

  709. God doesn't

  710. couch it in

  711. education.

  712. Not politics.

  713. Not race.

  714. God says

  715. the problem

  716. that this

  717. world faces,

  718. the source

  719. of all the

  720. hostility,

  721. is sin

  722. in the

  723. human heart.

  724. That's the

  725. real problem.

  726. I have a

  727. friend who

  728. went under the

  729. knife years

  730. ago.

  731. His doctor

  732. said,

  733. we got to do

  734. some surgery

  735. on you

  736. because we

  737. think this is

  738. the problem.

  739. He went under

  740. the knife.

  741. It was

  742. exploratory

  743. surgery,

  744. and so they

  745. just kept on

  746. cutting them

  747. to try to

  748. find out

  749. what the

  750. problem is.

  751. You know

  752. what they

  753. found?

  754. No problem.

  755. They

  756. misdiagnosed

  757. the issue.

  758. And so their

  759. solution missed

  760. the mark.

  761. For those of

  762. us who are

  763. called to

  764. peacemaking,

  765. now at this

  766. time,

  767. we've got to

  768. be laser

  769. focused on

  770. the problem

  771. so that we

  772. are laser

  773. focused on the

  774. solution.

  775. we can't

  776. misdiagnose

  777. what's going

  778. on.

  779. And God

  780. doesn't let

  781. us.

  782. God says

  783. the greatest

  784. problem we

  785. face is sin

  786. in our hearts

  787. that separates

  788. us from God,

  789. that disintegrates

  790. us internally,

  791. that separates

  792. us from our

  793. friends and

  794. family, and

  795. that originated

  796. the problem

  797. with this

  798. planet.

  799. If you turn

  800. in your Bible

  801. to Mark

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  802. chapter 7,

  803. Jesus says

  804. this,

  805. and Jesus

  806. said what

  807. comes out of

  808. a person is

  809. what defiles

  810. him.

  811. For from

  812. within, out

  813. of the heart

  814. of man, come

  815. evil thoughts,

  816. sexual immorality,

  817. theft, murder,

  818. adultery, coveting,

  819. wickedness, deceit,

  820. sensuality, envy,

  821. slander, pride,

  822. foolishness.

  823. All these evil

  824. things come from

  825. within and they

  826. defile a person.

  827. Martin Lloyd

  828. Jones, preacher,

  829. bygone era,

  830. said this,

  831. the explanation

  832. for all our

  833. troubles is

  834. is human lust,

  835. greed, selfishness,

  836. self-centeredness.

  837. It's the cause of

  838. all the trouble

  839. and the discord,

  840. whether between

  841. individuals or

  842. between groups

  843. within a nation

  844. or between nations

  845. themselves.

  846. And only I would

  847. add is even

  848. within you.

  849. What the story

  850. of peace in the

  851. Bible shows us

  852. is the greatest

  853. problem we face

  854. peace.

  855. Is sin in the

  856. human heart.

  857. Which means

  858. the only solution,

  859. the starting point

  860. for peace

  861. is the gospel

  862. of Jesus Christ.

  863. That's the greatest hope.

  864. He alone

  865. is able to

  866. transform

  867. a rebel heart

  868. into a peace

  869. loving heart.

  870. Jesus is the

  871. ultimate peacemaker.

  872. He's the one

  873. who is able

  874. to change hearts.

  875. That's the story

  876. of peace.

  877. That's what your

  878. Bible has to say

  879. about peace.

  880. Now let's

  881. address this.

  882. What does it

  883. mean to be a

  884. peacemaker?

  885. Matthew 5, 9.

  886. Blessed are the

  887. peacemakers,

  888. for they shall be

  889. called sons of God.

  890. I just want to

  891. remind you of a

  892. couple things.

  893. In order for you

  894. to be a peacemaker

  895. and know what a

  896. peacemaker,

  897. what it means,

  898. first thing that it

  899. means is you

  900. never forget.

  901. You never forget

  902. that you,

  903. Christian,

  904. were a natural

  905. born rebel.

  906. You never forget.

  907. You never forget.

  908. In Ephesians 2,

  909. Paul reminds

  910. these Christians

  911. in Ephesus

  912. that they were

  913. born

  914. enemies of God.

  915. Dead in their sin.

  916. Following the prince

  917. of the power of the air.

  918. They were under

  919. God's wrath.

  920. But

  921. God

  922. in His grace

  923. made them alive

  924. together with

  925. Christ Jesus.

  926. and

  927. seated them

  928. in the heavenly

  929. places.

  930. What does it mean

  931. to be a peacemaker?

  932. First and foremost,

  933. it means

  934. remembering

  935. what you were

  936. and what God

  937. has done

  938. for you.

  939. You were dead.

  940. Have you seen

  941. those

  942. 9-11

  943. stickers,

  944. billboards?

  945. Never forget.

  946. Never forget.

  947. I saw a guy

  948. with a tattoo.

  949. Twin towers,

  950. 9-11.

  951. Never forget.

  952. Never forget.

  953. The Bible

  954. never lets us

  955. forget

  956. who we were.

  957. We were enemies,

  958. rebels

  959. in the flesh.

  960. But God

  961. by His grace

  962. did something

  963. miraculous.

  964. brother and

  965. sister in Christ,

  966. I'm not sure

  967. if you think

  968. about yourself

  969. this way.

  970. But did you

  971. know that you

  972. are actually

  973. a living

  974. billboard

  975. for the

  976. supernatural

  977. outworking

  978. of God's

  979. grace in the

  980. life of a rebel?

  981. Did you know

  982. that?

  983. You are

  984. living proof

  985. that God

  986. is still

  987. doing the

  988. miraculous.

  989. miraculous.

  990. He was

  991. able to

  992. transform you,

  993. a rebel,

  994. into a

  995. peacemaker

  996. by the

  997. blood of

  998. Jesus.

  999. It's a

  1000. supernatural

  1001. work of

  1002. God's

  1003. grace.

  1004. When Jesus

  1005. was talking

  1006. to Nicodemus

  1007. in John 3,

  1008. He talked

  1009. about it

  1010. like this.

  1011. You've

  1012. got to be

  1013. born again.

  1014. You need

  1015. to experience

  1016. the rebirth

  1017. that only

  1018. the Spirit

  1019. provides.

  1020. 2 Corinthians

  1021. 5,

  1022. the Apostle

  1023. Paul talks

  1024. about it

  1025. as we

  1026. are new

  1027. creations.

  1028. Old is

  1029. gone.

  1030. New has

  1031. come.

  1032. In God's

  1033. eyes,

  1034. when a

  1035. sinner

  1036. becomes a

  1037. believer,

  1038. the miraculous

  1039. happens.

  1040. Life is

  1041. given to

  1042. the dead.

  1043. Rebels

  1044. are made

  1045. peacemakers.

  1046. It's a

  1047. radical work

  1048. of grace.

  1049. It's a

  1050. miraculous

  1051. work of

  1052. grace.

  1053. It's a

  1054. spiritual

  1055. rebirth.

  1056. It's a

  1057. becoming

  1058. a son

  1059. or daughter

  1060. of God

  1061. most high.

  1062. Blessed

  1063. are the

  1064. peacemakers

  1065. for they

  1066. shall be

  1067. called

  1068. sons and

  1069. daughters

  1070. of God.

  1071. You

  1072. can never

  1073. forget,

  1074. brother and

  1075. sister of

  1076. Christ,

  1077. who you

  1078. once were.

  1079. It'll

  1080. help you

  1081. remember who

  1082. you are

  1083. now.

  1084. I'm a

  1085. peacemaker.

  1086. If you

  1087. opened up

  1088. your Bibles

  1089. to the

  1090. book of

  1091. Revelation

  1092. and you

  1093. just

  1094. paged

  1095. through

  1096. it,

  1097. don't

  1098. turn there

  1099. right now,

  1100. but if you

  1101. did,

  1102. and you

  1103. just paged

  1104. through it,

  1105. you know what

  1106. you would

  1107. read?

  1108. You would

  1109. see these

  1110. little

  1111. choruses,

  1112. little

  1113. choruses of

  1114. God's people

  1115. singing to

  1116. God.

  1117. And you

  1118. know what

  1119. they keep

  1120. on singing

  1121. about?

  1122. How their

  1123. great God

  1124. rescued them

  1125. over and

  1126. over and

  1127. over again.

  1128. It's a

  1129. great chorus

  1130. book.

  1131. The blood

  1132. of the Lamb

  1133. has delivered

  1134. me again and

  1135. again.

  1136. So the

  1137. first thing

  1138. of what it

  1139. means to

  1140. be a

  1141. peacemaker

  1142. is to

  1143. remember.

  1144. Remember

  1145. what God

  1146. has done

  1147. for you

  1148. in Christ

  1149. Jesus.

  1150. You were

  1151. a rebel,

  1152. made a

  1153. peacemaker

  1154. by the

  1155. grace of

  1156. Jesus,

  1157. the ultimate

  1158. peacemaker.

  1159. We'll never

  1160. forget.

  1161. That's why we

  1162. sing the songs

  1163. we do.

  1164. We'll never

  1165. forget.

  1166. We'll keep it

  1167. in front of

  1168. us.

  1169. We were

  1170. dead but

  1171. made alive.

  1172. It's something

  1173. to sing

  1174. about,

  1175. isn't it?

  1176. The second

  1177. thing you

  1178. need to

  1179. know what

  1180. it means

  1181. to be a

  1182. peacemaker

  1183. is being

  1184. a peacemaker

  1185. is part

  1186. of God's

  1187. supernatural

  1188. package.

  1189. It's a

  1190. package deal.

  1191. This is

  1192. one piece

  1193. of the

  1194. package.

  1195. Now this

  1196. is how

  1197. the Beatitudes

  1198. relate to

  1199. one another.

  1200. And as I've

  1201. been talking

  1202. to people

  1203. over the

  1204. last few

  1205. months,

  1206. what I'm

  1207. about to

  1208. say has

  1209. really helped

  1210. people.

  1211. Because if

  1212. you're like

  1213. me, you

  1214. used to

  1215. approach the

  1216. Beatitudes

  1217. kind of

  1218. like spiritual

  1219. gifts.

  1220. You know,

  1221. God apportions

  1222. spiritual gifts

  1223. each to a

  1224. particular Christian

  1225. for the

  1226. building up

  1227. of the

  1228. body.

  1229. And so we

  1230. tend to

  1231. approach the

  1232. Beatitudes

  1233. as, well,

  1234. Jim here

  1235. is, well,

  1236. you know what,

  1237. he definitely

  1238. is the mercy

  1239. guy.

  1240. And then

  1241. Lisa over

  1242. here, well,

  1243. she's definitely

  1244. the pure in

  1245. heart lady.

  1246. And then,

  1247. you know,

  1248. Ron, well,

  1249. he mourns a

  1250. lot over his

  1251. sins, so we

  1252. got that

  1253. covered over

  1254. there.

  1255. And then,

  1256. you know,

  1257. the peacemaking,

  1258. well, that's

  1259. rich because

  1260. everybody talks

  1261. to rich when

  1262. they get in

  1263. fights with

  1264. one another.

  1265. And so we

  1266. can approach

  1267. the Beatitudes

  1268. that way,

  1269. but that's

  1270. not what

  1271. Jesus intended.

  1272. The Beatitudes

  1273. are a

  1274. packaged

  1275. profile of

  1276. a citizen

  1277. of the

  1278. kingdom

  1279. of Jesus.

  1280. they're all

  1281. true of a

  1282. Christian

  1283. in growing

  1284. measure.

  1285. The Beatitudes

  1286. form a

  1287. profile,

  1288. and when you

  1289. look at them,

  1290. you can't help

  1291. but see

  1292. Jesus.

  1293. They reveal

  1294. spiritual

  1295. rebirth.

  1296. Let me put it

  1297. this way.

  1298. Blessed are

  1299. the poor in

  1300. spirit,

  1301. for theirs is

  1302. the kingdom

  1303. of God.

  1304. A sinner

  1305. doesn't recognize

  1306. their poverty

  1307. of spirit

  1308. without first

  1309. the spirit of

  1310. God showing

  1311. them.

  1312. Blessed are

  1313. those who

  1314. mourn their

  1315. sin.

  1316. Sinners don't

  1317. mourn their

  1318. sins unless

  1319. they're convicted

  1320. by the Holy

  1321. Spirit.

  1322. blessed are

  1323. the meek,

  1324. the gentle.

  1325. Gentleness is

  1326. the fruit of

  1327. the spirit.

  1328. Putting others

  1329. first,

  1330. God's agenda

  1331. first,

  1332. sinners don't

  1333. do that

  1334. naturally of

  1335. themselves.

  1336. That's a

  1337. work of

  1338. God's spirit.

  1339. Hunger and

  1340. thirsting for

  1341. righteousness,

  1342. what?

  1343. Are you

  1344. kidding me?

  1345. An appetite

  1346. for holiness,

  1347. that isn't

  1348. come up naturally

  1349. from a sinner.

  1350. That's born of

  1351. the spirit of

  1352. God doing a

  1353. work,

  1354. a glorious

  1355. work.

  1356. In someone

  1357. reborn.

  1358. Blessed are

  1359. the merciful.

  1360. Goodness and

  1361. kindness,

  1362. that's the

  1363. spirit of

  1364. God work.

  1365. Purity of

  1366. heart,

  1367. that kind of

  1368. cleansing is a

  1369. spirit cleansing.

  1370. A transformation

  1371. God does.

  1372. Peacemaking,

  1373. peacemaking isn't

  1374. something that

  1375. sinners can do.

  1376. Not in God's

  1377. way of

  1378. peacemaking.

  1379. naturally born

  1380. rebels don't

  1381. incline themselves

  1382. to peace,

  1383. but one born of

  1384. the spirit,

  1385. a child of

  1386. God,

  1387. they want

  1388. peace because

  1389. they take after

  1390. their father.

  1391. The Beatitudes

  1392. are a profile of

  1393. those born of

  1394. the spirit into

  1395. God's family,

  1396. into God's

  1397. kingdom.

  1398. It's a package

  1399. profile.

  1400. It's what's to

  1401. be true of each

  1402. of us Christians

  1403. in growing measure.

  1404. It's quite a call,

  1405. isn't it?

  1406. The other thing to

  1407. note is it's

  1408. progressive.

  1409. You can't be a

  1410. peacemaker without

  1411. first being poor in

  1412. spirit and mourning

  1413. your sin.

  1414. It just won't

  1415. work.

  1416. The Beatitudes

  1417. build on one

  1418. another and the

1419. spirit of God is at

1420. work in each of us

  1421. making us

  1422. beautiful in our

  1423. father's eyes.

  1424. we're taking on

  1425. the character of

  1426. Jesus.

  1427. That's what you

1428. need to know to be

  1429. a peacemaker.

  1430. You can't forget

  1431. who you were so

  1432. that you can

  1433. remember who you

  1434. are, what God

  1435. has done for you

  1436. in Christ Jesus.

  1437. And you've got to

  1438. remember that being

  1439. a peacemaker is

  1440. part of this

  1441. packaged profile

  1442. of beauty that

  1443. God is seeking to

  1444. do in you by

  1445. his spirit.

  1446. Let me summarize

  1447. it this way.

  1448. Brother,

  1449. sister in

  1450. Christ,

  1451. will you listen

  1452. carefully to

  1453. this?

  1454. Your conversion

  1455. to Christ

  1456. was your

  1457. commissioning

  1458. by Christ

  1459. to be a

  1460. peacemaker

  1461. for Christ.

  1462. Christ.

  1463. Your conversion

  1464. to Christ

  1465. was your

  1466. commissioning by

  1467. Christ to be a

  1468. peacemaker for

  1469. Christ.

  1470. God reconciled you

  1471. through Jesus so

1472. that you would be a

  1473. minister of

  1474. reconciliation to

  1475. others.

  1476. That's who you

  1477. are.

  1478. What you need to

  1479. remember before we

  1480. get into the work

  1481. of peacemaking,

  1482. you've got to

  1483. remember who you

  1484. are as a

  1485. peacemaker.

  1486. God made you a

  1487. peacemaker by his

  1488. grace.

  1489. Now, I've only

  1490. got a few minutes.

  1491. I want to answer

  1492. this question.

1493. What do you do as

  1494. a supernaturally

  1495. reborn peacemaker?

  1496. What do you do?

  1497. Well, I have four

  1498. things, but I can

  1499. only really focus on

  1500. two this morning for

  1501. the sake of time.

1502. The first one I was

1503. going to tell you is

1504. to be a reminder of

  1505. God's peace.

  1506. That you remind

  1507. yourself that you're

1508. at peace with God by

  1509. the blood of Jesus.

  1510. Jesus.

  1511. Peacemakers got to

  1512. remind themselves that

  1513. God has made peace

  1514. with them through the

  1515. blood of Jesus.

1516. You've got to do it.

  1517. You've got to preach

  1518. the gospel to yourself.

  1519. The other thing I

1520. want to tell you is

1521. that on this side of

  1522. Jesus' second return,

  1523. we are prophesiers of

  1524. a perfect peace.

1525. We tell a world that

1526. is in mess that there

  1527. is a perfect peace

  1528. coming with the

  1529. coming of Jesus.

  1530. We're prophesiers of

  1531. a perfect peace.

  1532. In the meantime, we're

  1533. just living in the

  1534. reality of Matthew 24

  1535. where Jesus said, hey,

  1536. there's going to be

  1537. wars and rumors of

  1538. wars.

1539. There are going to be

  1540. earthquakes and famines

  1541. and mess.

  1542. There's going to be

  1543. tribulation in mounting

  1544. measure for my followers.

  1545. That's where we're

  1546. living right now.

  1547. Perfect peace is coming.

1548. But the two things I

  1549. wanted to really focus

1550. on this morning is a

  1551. peacemaker is a

  1552. striver for peace.

  1553. A striver for peace.

1554. I know three things are

1555. true of every person in

  1556. this room right now.

1557. I know every one of you

  1558. is experiencing what I'm

1559. about to say in one of

  1560. three ways, okay?

  1561. Either you have experienced

  1562. personal strain and

  1563. trouble with someone

  1564. else.

  1565. You've experienced that.

  1566. Or you are presently

  1567. experiencing turmoil,

  1568. tension, distrust in a

  1569. relationship.

  1570. Or three, you will

  1571. experience this in a

  1572. relationship.

  1573. I know that's true of

  1574. everyone.

  1575. I know it's true of me.

1576. What a striver of peace,

  1577. a peacemaker is seeking

1578. to do is bring God's

  1579. goodness into relationships

  1580. with others.

  1581. And so, a peacemaker, a

  1582. striver for peace, you

  1583. know what that means?

1584. If you are in discord with

  1585. someone else, whether a

  1586. Christian or a non-Christian,

1587. if you are in discord with

  1588. someone else, the first

1589. thing that you must do is

  1590. entrust yourself in that

1591. situation to the prince of

  1592. peace.

1593. And so, it looks like this.

  1594. God, there's something not

  1595. right here.

1596. I'm picking up on a vibe or

1597. God, did I do something with

  1598. this person?

1599. Because it is awkward right

  1600. now.

1601. Prince of peace, would you

  1602. bring peace to this

  1603. situation?

1604. And in that praying and

  1605. entrusting yourself to the

1606. prince of peace, you're going

1607. to ask the prince of peace

  1608. something like this.

1609. Oh, Lord Jesus, have I done

  1610. something here?

1611. Have I wronged this person?

1612. Is there something for me to

  1613. confess to this person?

1614. Do I need to address in order

1615. to remove an obstacle to the

1616. peace you want for us?

1617. Is that what you want for me?

1618. Show me, Lord Jesus, what I

  1619. must do.

  1620. And it's okay if it's

  1621. painful.

  1622. Peacemaking is painful.

  1623. It's painful for Jesus.

1624. It will be painful for us.

1625. And then, after we ask him,

1626. oh, Lord, what must we do?

1627. Is there something for me to

  1628. confess?

1629. Do I need to confront?

1630. Do I need to bring somebody

1631. else in and make peace?

  1632. What must I do?

1633. Do I need to do?

1634. Next thing you do is this.

1635. God, help me to love.

  1636. Help me to love.

1637. Do you know what drives peace?

  1638. Biblical peace?

  1639. God, peace?

  1640. Love.

  1641. Love drives it.

  1642. It's the stuff, it's the energy

1643. that gives, compels us to make

  1644. peace with others.

1645. That's what God did with us.

  1646. Here's the deal.

1647. And I know a lot of you are

  1648. here right now.

  1649. You're waiting.

  1650. You're waiting on peace.

1651. But there's blessing in it.

  1652. There's joy in it.

1653. Do you know what it is?

  1654. It's knowing that you've

1655. entrusted it to the Prince of

  1656. Peace.

1657. And he's going to do a work.

1658. Either now or when he comes

  1659. back.

1660. Peace is coming to that

  1661. relationship.

  1662. Wait on him.

  1663. A striver for peace is a

  1664. prayer for peace.

1665. And so if you, there's no

1666. other steps you can take right

  1667. now towards peace.

  1668. There is.

  1669. You pray.

  1670. You pray.

1671. You pray God's blessing on

  1672. this other person.

1673. You pray good for them.

  1674. God's goodness for them.

1675. That they would delight more

1676. and more in the living God.

  1677. Whether they're non-Christian,

1678. oh God, bring them to faith.

  1679. If they're a believer, oh God,

  1680. bless them.

  1681. And bring peace.

  1682. I know of a story recently.

1683. Ten years it took for a brother

1684. to come around to another brother

  1685. to make peace.

  1686. It came.

  1687. It came.

1688. Be a striver for peace.

1689. I want to give you a couple passages

1690. to be grist in your mill of peacemaking.

  1691. Hebrews 12.14.

  1692. Strive for peace.

  1693. Romans 12.18.

1694. If possible, so far as it depends on you,

  1695. live peaceably with all.

  1696. Peacemaker.

  1697. Peacemaker.

  1698. You are a peacemaker.

  1699. Strive for peace.

  1700. Do what you can.

1701. Trusting in the Prince of Peace.

1702. Experience the joy of knowing

1703. that He's in it and He's working for it.

  1704. The last thing

1705. I wanted to tell you this morning.

1706. The work of a peacemaker

  1707. is this.

1708. Brothers and sisters in Christ,

  1709. we are ambassadors

  1710. of peace.

  1711. The peace of God.

  1712. We are ambassadors.

  1713. 2 Corinthians 5.18-20.

  1714. Paul, the Apostle Paul,

1715. talks about we were made new creations

1716. and entrusted with the ministry

  1717. of reconciliation,

  1718. of peacemaking.

  1719. Do you know what

  1720. an ambassador does?

  1721. An ambassador lives

  1722. in a foreign land

  1723. and has hard conversations

  1724. with where he's at

  1725. to represent his country.

  1726. Don't forget,

1727. we live in a foreign land.

  1728. We're exiles.

1729. Our country is yet to come.

  1730. But here's what I want

  1731. to encourage you with.

  1732. Two things.

  1733. 2 Corinthians 5.

  1734. I think this is verse 20.

1735. When we speak the gospel

  1736. to somebody else,

1737. when we speak the prince of peace

  1738. to a rebel,

  1739. Paul says,

1740. it's God making His appeal

  1741. through us.

1742. God making His appeal through us.

  1743. Brother, sister,

  1744. you are a peacemaker

1745. and God wants to make an appeal

  1746. to peace to rebels

  1747. through you.

  1748. Be encouraged.

  1749. It's His work.

  1750. Here's the second thing.

  1751. God doesn't make mistakes

  1752. in placing people

  1753. where they're at.

1754. When you leave this building,

  1755. either the front door

  1756. or the back door,

1757. there's going to be a little thing

  1758. written above the doorway.

  1759. You are now entering

  1760. your mission field.

  1761. Ambassador of Christ,

  1762. you're going into

  1763. your mission field.

  1764. God has placed you

  1765. in your immediate family

  1766. and extended family.

  1767. That's not an accident.

  1768. He wants you there

  1769. as an ambassador

  1770. for His peace.

  1771. Neighborhoods,

  1772. workplace,

  1773. jazzercise,

  1774. class,

  1775. athletic team,

  1776. you're there for a reason.

  1777. You're an ambassador,

  1778. a peacemaker.

  1779. Blessed are the peacemakers

1780. for they shall be called

  1781. sons of God.

  1782. Where are the peacemakers?

  1783. Here are the peacemakers.

  1784. God has called you

  1785. to Himself

  1786. to be a peacemaker.

  1787. Let's pray.

1788. God, thank You so much

  1789. for Jesus.

  1790. Jesus, thank You

1791. for the peace You've made

  1792. for us

  1793. through Your cross

1794. and that we fear no more

  1795. because our biggest problem

  1796. has been solved.

1797. And God, we would ask

1798. that You would make us

  1799. peacemakers in this city.

1800. That we would be ambassadors.

1801. That we would strive for peace.

1802. That we remind each other

  1803. of peace.

  1804. And of course,

  1805. that we would prophesy

1806. of the peace to come.

1807. Pray this in the name of Jesus.

  1808. Amen.

  1809. Amen.

  1810. Amen.

  1811. Amen.

  1812. Amen.

  1813. Amen.

  1814. Amen.

  1815. Amen.

  1816. Amen.

  1817. Amen.

  1818. Amen.

  1819. Amen.

  1820. Amen.

  1821. Amen.

  1822. Amen.

  1823. Amen.

  1824. Amen.

  1825. Amen.

  1826. Amen.

  1827. Amen.

  1828. Amen.

  1829. Amen.

  1830. Amen.

  1831. Amen.

  1832. Amen.

  1833. Amen.

  1834. Amen.
