  1. I have a Captain Obvious statement to make this morning.

  2. As you turn in your Bibles to Matthew 5,

  3. we're going to be looking at verses 17-20.

  4. And the Captain Obvious statement is this.

  5. The Sermon on the Mount, it's a sermon.

  6. It's Jesus preaching.

  7. And so as we turn there, listen to the words of Jesus.

  8. Listen to what He's actually saying.

  9. It's phenomenal.

  10. It's extraordinary.

  11. It should blow your mind.

  12. Hear the word of the Lord Jesus.

  13. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  14. He's speaking about the whole Old Testament there.

  15. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  16. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  17. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

  18. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same,

  19. will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

  20. But whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

  21. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  22. How many sermons have you heard in your life?

  23. I mean, if you've been a Christian for 10 years and you show up to, you know, 48 services, that's 480 sermons.

  24. That's a lot of sermons.

  25. You've probably got by now that there's three basic parts to a sermon.

  26. There's the introduction, which is the hook that raises the need.

  27. And then there's the body, which is the content.

  28. And then there's the clothes, which kind of brings it all together and to bear in our lives.

  29. Well, when you look at the Sermon on the Mount, you see all those elements.

  30. You see the introduction.

  31. Those are the Beatitudes.

  32. Jesus is saying, this is my kingdom people.

  33. This is the character of those who follow me.

  34. And they're going to be salt and light.

  35. And the disciples are wondering, well, then, how do you do that?

  36. So he's hooked them.

  37. And then there's the clothes of the sermon.

  38. Would you flip over in your Bible to Matthew 7 and verse 13?

  39. This is the clothes of the sermon.

  40. And Jesus calls his listeners to make a decision.

  41. And he says, hey, folks, there's two ways to live.

  42. You can either live this way or live this way.

  43. You can go through the narrow gate or through the wide gate.

  44. You can be like a healthy tree or a diseased tree.

  45. You can be one who does the will of the Heavenly Father.

  46. You can be a worker of lawlessness.

  47. Or the final one is, hey, you can be like a wise man who builds his house on the rock.

  48. Or you can be like the fool who builds his house on the sand.

  49. The point is, Jesus is saying, there's two ways to live.

  50. You decide.

  51. That's the clothes.

  52. He calls his listeners to make a decision.

  53. And in between the Beatitudes in those two ways to live is the body of his sermon.

  54. And this morning, we're looking at the very start of the sermon.

  55. This morning, I asked.

  56. We started by opening up the Bible and said, turn your pages to Bibles to Matthew 5.

  57. And then I read from you the passage that I'm going to be preaching on this morning.

  58. Jesus does something very similar.

  59. He calls his disciples to listen to what he's going to expound on from the Scriptures.

  60. Now, let me just tell you something about Christian preaching.

  61. What makes Christian preaching Christian versus Islamic or Jewish?

  62. A Christian preacher is going to preach Jesus Christ from the God-inspired text of the Bible.

  63. That's what makes Christian preaching Christian.

  64. We preach Christ from the Scriptures.

  65. And we see that happening.

  66. This very first sermon of our King, it is distinctly Christian.

  67. Let's ask Jesus a question.

  68. Jesus, as you start the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, what text are you using?

  69. We want to open our Bibles, Jesus.

  70. Would you show us the chapter and verse?

  71. What book should we turn to, Jesus?

  72. You know, if Jesus was here, you know what he'd say to us?

  73. This morning, would you open up your Bibles to the entire Old Testament?

  74. Because I'm going to preach from the Old Testament.

  75. And then he's going to say something like this this morning.

  76. Here's the topic of the entire Old Testament.

  77. It's phenomenal.

  78. It's like, here we are, everybody.

  79. Here's the main point.

  80. The Old Testament is fulfilled in me.

  81. That's where he starts the Sermon on the Mount.

  82. Text for this morning, Old Testament.

  83. Point of this morning's sermon, the Old Testament finds its fulfillment in me.

  84. Only God incarnate can pull that off.

  85. Only God in the flesh can say something like that.

  86. Only God can say, the Old Testament finds its fulfillment in me.

  87. The sermon that Jesus is preaching in the Sermon on the Mount,

  88. it's not the exposition of one verse or a paragraph or a chapter.

  89. It's on the whole Bible of their time.

  90. The Law and the Prophets.

  91. Genesis through Malachi.

  92. And so what this morning, I just want to be very clear,

  93. is that you need to say is that Jesus is claiming to be the fulfillment

  94. of all that the Old Testament points to.

  95. It's all about him.

  96. And our response is, who can say something like that but God himself?

  97. So four things I want to help you see.

  98. First is this, how Jesus understood the Old Testament,

  99. his view of the Old Testament.

  100. We'll see that in verse 18.

  101. And then we'll come back to verse 17,

  102. so you can see how Jesus thought about his relationship to the Old Testament.

  103. And then we'll see in verse 19 is a bit of a warning.

  104. And then verse 20, after he lays all this out about his relationship to the Old Testament,

  105. he's going to call us to a kind of righteousness that has yet to be seen on earth.

  106. A righteousness that exceeds that of even the scribes and Pharisees.

  107. So let's look at Jesus' view of the Old Testament.

  108. We're going to look at chapter 5, verse 18.

  109. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,

  110. not an iota, not a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

  111. Up until this point, Jesus has already shown his view of the Scriptures.

  112. Do you remember chapter 4?

  113. Satan comes out in the wilderness.

  114. Satan comes out in the wilderness.

  115. He squares off on Jesus and tempts Jesus three times.

  116. And Jesus pulls out the shield of faith.

  117. Pew, pew, pew, pew.

  118. Blocks his shots.

  119. Brings down the sword of the Spirit.

  120. And he quotes three times from the book of Deuteronomy.

  121. Jesus had a high view of the Bible.

  122. And it functioned in his life.

  123. You see him battling in chapter 4 with God's Word.

  124. He was already using the Mosaic Law.

  125. He believes in it.

  126. He trusts it.

  127. He's living by it.

  128. And so what Jesus is going to talk to us about this morning

  129. is his relationship to the Old Testament.

  130. And so at the beginning of verse 18, he says,

  131. truly I say to you, for truly I say to you,

  132. and that's his distinct way of saying,

  133. listen to the truth I'm about to say

  134. because you can bank your life on it.

  135. And then he says,

  136. until heaven and earth pass away.

  137. Until heaven and earth pass away.

  138. Not an iota.

  139. Not a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

  140. That little phrase,

  141. until heaven and earth pass away,

  142. well it's an expression.

  143. Meaning,

  144. it's timeless.

  145. It's permanent.

  146. It's going to be here for the rest of time.

  147. And then when he starts talking about those,

  148. what is an iota?

  149. What's he talking about that?

  150. An iota?

  151. What's that?

  152. What's a dot?

  153. What's he talking about?

  154. Well he's talking about this.

  155. God has inspired the Old Testament.

  156. It originated in his mind.

  157. And what Jesus is getting here is

  158. the Old Testament's permanent.

  159. It's from God.

  160. And it's all from him.

  161. It's going to be here.

  162. And then he says this.

  163. Just in case you're wondering,

  164. it's not inspired just in idea only.

  165. Every iota,

  166. every little dot

  167. originated in the mind of God.

  168. And what those are,

  169. are the very smallest pen strokes

  170. strokes of the Hebrew alphabet.

  171. They're the tiniest of details

  172. in the Hebrew language.

  173. And what God,

  174. what Jesus is saying is,

  175. it's all from God.

  176. It's permanent.

  177. In the details.

  178. Not just the ideas.

  179. But the very words,

  180. the very strokes themselves,

  181. originated in God's mind

  182. and is for our benefit

  183. now.

  184. And then he says,

  185. this law,

  186. the law and the prophets,

  187. the Old Testament,

  188. hey,

  189. it's not going to pass away

  190. until all

  191. is accomplished.

  192. Well that's getting at the

  193. prophetic nature

  194. of the

  195. Old Testament.

  196. Do you know what a three point

  197. stance is in football?

  198. Guys get down like this.

  199. They're getting ready.

  200. They're like poised to pounce.

  201. The Old Testament is like

  202. a coiled spring

  203. ready to

  204. make known something.

  205. It's prophetic in nature.

  206. All of it.

  207. So whether it's the prophets,

  208. whether it's the judges

  209. or Ruth

  210. or 1 and 2 Samuel,

  211. those narratives,

  212. whether it's wisdom literature

  213. like the Psalms

  214. or Proverbs,

  215. even the Mosaic law itself,

  216. all those regulations,

  217. all of it

  218. is aimed.

  219. All of it

  220. is poised.

  221. All of it

  222. is anticipating something.

  223. It's all prophetic.

  224. It shows up in different ways.

  225. But it's all designed

  226. to point

  227. to something

  228. until all

  229. is accomplished.

  230. accomplished.

  231. The Old Testament

  232. reveals God's plan

  233. for the fullness

  234. of time.

  235. And that plan

  236. comes into clarity

  237. in the New Testament.

  238. So,

  239. the Apostle Paul

  240. talked about it this way

  241. in Ephesians 1.10.

  242. God has this plan

  243. for the fullness

  244. of time

  245. to unite

  246. all things

  247. in

  248. Christ.

  249. the Old Testament

  250. is going to find

  251. its ultimate fulfillment,

  252. its ultimate

  253. yes and amen

  254. in the person

  255. of Jesus Christ.

  256. So,

  257. Jesus' view

  258. of the Old Testament,

  259. it's permanent

  260. all the way down

  261. to the details.

  262. It's prophetic.

  263. It's pointing

  264. at something.

  265. He's going to say

  266. it's pointing

  267. to Himself.

  268. And it's binding.

  269. God's law,

  270. His moral law

  271. is to be obeyed

  272. by all

  273. for all humankind.

  274. And so,

  275. what God outlines

  276. in the Old Testament,

  277. His will

  278. for men and women,

  279. His moral will,

  280. that doesn't change

  281. as culture changes.

  282. It's permanent.

  283. He's always been

  284. a holy God.

  285. And so,

  286. to sum up

  287. Jesus' view

  288. of the Old Testament,

  289. it is

  290. permanent,

  291. it's prophetic,

  292. it's binding.

  293. Why?

  294. Because

  295. the Old Testament,

  296. the words

  297. of the Old Testament

  298. are God's words.

  299. All Scriptures

  300. breathed out

  301. by God,

  302. says Paul.

  303. And he's talking

  304. about the Old Testament.

  305. Now,

  306. if Jesus had

  307. this view

  308. of the Old Testament,

  309. brothers and sisters,

  310. what's your view

  311. of the Old Testament

  312. like?

  313. Is it like,

  314. take it or leave it?

  315. Yeah,

  316. if I had to choose,

  317. I'd just go

  318. with the New Testament.

  319. What Jesus is saying

  320. is that

  321. the Old Testament

  322. is vital

  323. to understanding

  324. who Jesus is.

  325. So,

  326. we've looked at

  327. Jesus' view

  328. of the Old Testament.

  329. It is a high

  330. and wonderful view.

  331. In fact,

  332. it would be

  333. a shared view

  334. with the Pharisees

  335. and scribes

  336. of the time.

  337. Jesus never challenges

  338. on their understanding

  339. of the Old Testament.

  340. The conflict comes over

  341. the application of it.

  342. We'll see that later.

  343. The second thing

  344. I want you to see,

  345. and this is where,

  346. like,

  347. I've just been

  348. so jazzed all week.

  349. I can't believe

  350. I get to proclaim

  351. this to you guys today.

  352. How Jesus viewed

  353. his relationship

  354. to the Old Testament.

  355. So,

  356. look at verse 17.

  357. Knowing what

  358. Jesus' view

  359. of the Old Testament is,

  360. let's go back

  361. to verse 17.

  362. We read this.

  363. Jesus says,

  364. Do not think

  365. that I have come

  366. to abolish the law

  367. or the prophets,

  368. all of the Old Testament.

  369. I didn't come

  370. to put that aside.

  371. I have not come

  372. to abolish them,

  373. but to fulfill them.

  374. I have come

  375. to fulfill them.

  376. I have come

  377. to fulfill

  378. the Old Testament.

  379. Now,

  380. we can ask

  381. a question like this.

  382. Why is even

  383. Jesus talking

  384. about the Old Testament?

  385. And what I've

  386. tried to tell you

  387. up to this point

  388. is, well,

  389. he's starting

  390. a sermon

  391. and he's starting

  392. in his text

  393. and he's saying

  394. his text is

  395. the Old Testament.

  396. Well,

  397. there's another reason

  398. why.

  399. He's already

  400. gone through

  401. the introduction.

  402. He's already

  403. told his disciples

  404. who are there

  405. on the mountainside

  406. listening to him,

  407. you are

  408. citizens of heaven.

  409. blessed are those.

  410. And he goes

  411. from blessed

  412. are those

  413. in the third person

  414. to coming down

  415. into chapter 5

  416. verses 10,

  417. 11,

  418. 12 to you.

  419. You.

  420. You are my salt.

  421. You are my light.

  422. And then he gets

  423. into 517

  424. and all of a sudden

  425. he's talking about

  426. me.

  427. I.

  428. It's emphatic.

  429. And what Jesus

  430. is saying is this.

  431. Hey guys,

  432. I know you're

  433. wondering,

  434. now that I've

  435. told you

  436. you're my salt

  437. and light,

  438. I know you're

  439. wondering now

  440. how to do that.

  441. What to appeal

  442. to.

  443. What shows you

  444. the way to do

  445. that?

  446. And he also

  447. knows that,

  448. hey,

  449. if you think

  450. I'm the Messiah,

  451. you're probably

  452. wondering what

  453. my relationship

  454. to the Old

  455. Testament is

  456. because the Old

  457. Testament will

  458. show you the

  459. way.

  460. And so

  461. Jesus anticipating

  462. that his disciples

  463. are going to want

  464. to know how to

  465. rightly relate him

  466. to the Old

  467. Testament,

  468. he addresses it

  469. right out of the

  470. gate.

  471. So here's what I

  472. want you to see.

  473. The incarnate

  474. word,

  475. Jesus,

  476. is about to

  477. explain his

  478. relationship to

  479. the written word

  480. of the Old

  481. Testament.

  482. it.

  483. And what you're

  484. going to see is

  485. they're not in

  486. opposition to

  487. each other.

  488. You see,

  489. the written

  490. word of God

  491. points to the

  492. incarnate word

  493. of God,

  494. and there's no

  495. need to put them

  496. at odds.

  497. Jesus did not

  498. come to abolish the

  499. written word.

  500. He came to

  501. fulfill it.

  502. Have you ever

  503. planned a party?

  504. And you're

  505. planning the party

  506. and you're

  507. anticipating all

  508. your friends coming

  509. over and when

  510. they finally get

  511. there, you're

  512. kind of like,

  513. this is awesome.

  514. All my friends

  515. are here.

  516. So your

  517. planning is

  518. the anticipating

  519. and pointing to

  520. the actual

  521. party.

  522. And when the

  523. party happens,

  524. it fulfills

  525. all the

  526. planning.

  527. The Old

  528. Testament is

  529. the planning

  530. of the party.

  531. And when

  532. Jesus is

  533. coming and

  534. walks the

  535. party,

  536. it's all

  537. about Him.

  538. The Old

  539. Testament is

  540. like a

  541. glove.

  542. And Jesus

  543. is the

  544. hand in

  545. the glove.

  546. The Old

  547. Testament

  548. anticipates

  549. Jesus.

  550. If Jesus

  551. didn't come to

  552. negate the

  553. Old Testament,

  554. to minimize

  555. it,

  556. why did

  557. He come?

  558. What's His

  559. relationship to

  560. it?

  561. And it's in

  562. that word

  563. fulfill.

  564. Fulfill.

  565. He didn't

  566. come to

  567. abolish.

  568. He came to

  569. fulfill it.

  570. And that

  571. word simply

  572. means to

  573. bring meaning

  574. and substance

  575. to something.

  576. It has this

  577. prophetic sense

  578. of anticipation,

  579. finding,

  580. satisfaction,

  581. and fulfillment.

  582. And that is

  583. exactly what is

  584. going on here.

  585. Jesus has

  586. talked about this

  587. in other spots

  588. in the Gospels.

  589. John 5,

  590. 39.

  591. I started our

  592. service off with

  593. this.

  594. He says,

  595. you look to

  596. the Scriptures

  597. for eternal

  598. life,

  599. but the

  600. Scriptures

  601. actually are

  602. about me.

  603. In whom

  604. is eternal

  605. life?

  606. Luke 24,

  607. 44-45,

  608. Jesus is up

  609. in the upper

  610. room after

  611. His resurrection

  612. with His

  613. disciples.

  614. And He

  615. explains to

  616. them how

  617. He fulfilled

  618. Moses and

  619. the prophets

  620. and the

  621. Psalms,

  622. how the

  623. Christ must

  624. suffer.

  625. They're all

  626. pointing to

  627. Him.

  628. That word

  629. fulfill is

  630. key to

  631. understanding

  632. what Jesus

  633. is saying.

  634. And if you

  635. flip back

  636. in Matthew,

  637. this isn't

  638. the first

  639. time Matthew

  640. uses the

  641. word fulfill.

  642. If you look

  643. at chapter

  644. 1,

  645. verse 22,

  646. all this

  647. took place

  648. to fulfill

  649. what the

  650. Lord had

  651. spoken by

  652. the prophet.

  653. Behold,

  654. the virgin

  655. shall conceive

  656. and bear a

  657. son,

  658. and they

  659. shall call

  660. His name

  661. Emmanuel.

  662. Who

  663. fulfills

  664. the Old

  665. Testament

  666. prophet?

  667. Jesus.

  668. And then

  669. as you

  670. page through

  671. and look

  672. through chapter

  673. 2,

  674. you see

  675. again and

  676. again,

  677. this Jesus

  678. is the

  679. fulfillment

  680. of the

  681. Old

  682. Testament

  683. prophets.

  684. Not the

  685. easiest to

  686. understand,

  687. but it's

  688. there.

  689. Chapter

  690. 2,

  691. verse 15,

  692. and He

  693. remained

  694. there until

  695. the death

  696. of Herod.

  697. This was

  698. to fulfill

  699. what the

  700. Lord had

  701. spoken by

  702. the prophet.

  703. Chapter

  704. 2,

  705. verse 17,

  706. then was

  707. fulfilled what

  708. was spoken

  709. by the

  710. prophet

  711. Jeremiah.

  712. And then

  713. in verse

  714. 23,

  715. and He

  716. went and

  717. lived in

  718. a city

  719. called

  720. Nazareth,

  721. that what

  722. was spoken

  723. by the

  724. prophets

  725. might be

  726. fulfilled.

  727. And so

  728. when we

  729. get here

  730. to chapter

  731. 5,

  732. there's no

  733. reason to

  734. think that

  735. Jesus is

  736. talking about

  737. fulfillment

  738. in any

  739. different way

  740. than it's

  741. been used

  742. already in

  743. Matthew.

  744. But Jesus

  745. is saying,

  746. I've come

  747. not just

  748. to fulfill

  749. the prophets,

  750. I've come

  751. to fulfill

  752. the whole

  753. Old Testament.

  754. And so

  755. now the

  756. question I

  757. want to ask

  758. this morning

  759. is,

  760. how does

  761. Jesus

  762. fulfill the

  763. Old Testament?

  764. And there's

  765. a couple

  766. things I can

  767. point to.

  768. This is like

  769. 20 sermons

  770. right here.

  771. But let me

  772. give you a

  773. couple things.

  774. Early on

  775. in the

  776. Mosaic Law,

  777. in Genesis,

  778. we hear a

  779. prophecy in

  780. Genesis,

  781. Moses writing,

  782. that there's

  783. going to come

  784. one from

  785. Eve who

  786. will crush

  787. the head

  788. of the

  789. serpent.

  790. That's

  791. Jesus.

  792. Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  793. chapter 12,

  794. God calls

  795. Abram and

  796. He tells

  797. him,

  798. He promises

  799. him,

  800. through his

  801. offspring,

  802. He's going

  803. to bless

  804. all the

  805. nations of

  806. the earth.

  807. And then

  808. Paul in

  809. Galatians 3

  810. says,

  811. Jesus is

  812. that

  813. offspring.

  814. We see

  815. Jesus

  816. fulfilling

  817. Scripture

  818. after Scripture

  819. in a variety

  820. of different

  821. kinds of

  822. Old Testament

  823. literature.

  824. Let me

  825. point you

  826. to a couple

  827. other things.

  828. You know

  829. how in

  830. the book

  831. of Exodus,

  832. God makes

  833. known the

  834. law,

  835. Ten Commandments,

  836. Jesus fulfills

  837. the Ten

  838. Commandments.

  839. This is how.

  840. Every day

  841. that Jesus

  842. walked the

  843. earth,

  844. He went

  845. ten for

  846. ten on

  847. the big

  848. ten.

  849. He went

  850. ten for

  851. ten.

  852. He faithfully

  853. obeyed

  854. every

  855. commandment,

  856. not only the

  857. ten,

  858. but the

  859. hundreds of

  860. commands that

  861. came along

  862. with it.

  863. He perfectly

  864. obeyed and

  865. fulfilled the

  866. Old Testament

  867. law in a way

  868. that we could

  869. never.

  870. Every day of

  871. His life.

  872. So,

  873. is it no wonder

  874. at His

  875. baptism,

  876. God says,

  877. this is my

  878. beloved Son

  879. with whom I'm

  880. well pleased.

  881. He's lived a

  882. perfect life of

  883. righteousness.

  884. And so,

  885. Jesus,

  886. in a very

  887. real way,

  888. fulfills the

  889. Old Testament

  890. moral code

  891. in His

  892. life.

  893. And so,

  894. that's not so

  895. much kind

  896. of a

  897. prophecy from

  898. Isaiah.

  899. It's a

  900. different kind

  901. of speaking

  902. anticipation of

  903. one to come.

  904. But there's

  905. more.

  906. In the book

  907. of Leviticus,

  908. we are told of

  909. all these

  910. different

  911. sacrifices

  912. Jews had to

  913. make because

  914. for their sin,

  915. there needed to

  916. be the shedding

  917. of blood.

  918. God.

  919. And so,

  920. in God's

  921. wisdom,

  922. do you know

  923. what He did?

  924. He wanted to

  925. really press

  926. into His

  927. people a

  928. lesson.

  929. And that is,

  930. sin is real.

  931. And if you're

  932. going to live

  933. with a holy

  934. God,

  935. you've got to

  936. deal with your

  937. sin.

  938. And the way

  939. you deal with

  940. sin is by

  941. the shedding

  942. of blood.

  943. And so,

  944. over and over

  945. and over again

  946. in the Old

  947. Testament,

  948. over and over

  949. and over again,

  950. there is this

  951. repeated offerings

  952. of sacrifices

  953. for the sin

  954. of God's

  955. people.

  956. Over and over

  957. and over again,

  958. sin brings a

  959. penalty against

  960. a holy God.

  961. And that penalty

  962. is paid in

  963. blood.

  964. And that blood

  965. covers the sin

  966. and allows for

  967. relationship with

  968. the living God.

  969. And so,

  970. the sacrificial

  971. system established

  972. under the Mosaic

  973. Law,

  974. it begins to

  975. point to an

  976. ultimate sacrifice.

  977. Jesus.

  978. Jesus.

  979. Whom John

  980. said,

  981. behold,

  982. the Lamb of

  983. God comes to

  984. take away the

  985. sin of the

  986. world.

  987. Jesus fulfills

  988. the Old

  989. Testament sacrificial

  990. system because

  991. His sacrifice

  992. on the cross

  993. was a once

  994. for all

  995. done deal.

  996. The perfect

  997. of all sacrifices.

  998. The perfect

  999. Lamb of God

  1000. who shed His

  1001. blood to take

  1002. away the sins

  1003. of a world.

  1004. Jesus is the

  1005. fulfillment of

  1006. that.

  1007. And we can go

  1008. on and on

  1009. and on.

  1010. How His

  1011. substitutionary

  1012. death fulfilled

  1013. Isaiah 53.

  1014. We can talk about

  1015. how Jesus

  1016. shedding of

  1017. His blood

  1018. and what

  1019. happened the

  1020. night before

  1021. at the Last

  1022. Supper.

  1023. He's inaugurating

  1024. the New

  1025. Covenant.

  1026. He's talking

  1027. about the

  1028. shedding of

  1029. His blood.

  1030. He's going to

  1031. usher in what

  1032. Jeremiah talked

  1033. about in

  1034. Jeremiah 31

  1035. and what

  1036. Ezekiel talked

  1037. about in

  1038. Ezekiel 36

  1039. and Jesus

  1040. ushered in

  1041. the New

  1042. Covenant

  1043. fullness.

  1044. I want to

  1045. point you to

  1046. one more

  1047. thing.

  1048. In Deuteronomy

  1049. 18.18

  1050. God is talking

  1051. to Moses and

  1052. He's saying

  1053. there's going

  1054. to be a

  1055. prophet that

  1056. I'm going to

  1057. raise up from

  1058. the people and

  1059. He's going to

  1060. speak for me.

  1061. And then

  1062. Peter in

  1063. Acts 3

  1064. 22 and

  1065. 23.

  1066. Do you know

  1067. what He says?

  1068. Who this

  1069. prophet is?

  1070. Jesus!

  1071. The ultimate

  1072. prophet.

  1073. The ultimate

  1074. sacrifice.

  1075. He is the

  1076. fulfillment of

  1077. the Old

  1078. Testament.

  1079. The

  1080. anticipation

  1081. that the

  1082. Old Testament

  1083. raises over

  1084. the centuries

  1085. is found

  1086. fulfillment in

  1087. Jesus.

  1088. Is this

  1089. making sense?

  1090. You may be

  1091. come in here

  1092. this morning

  1093. and you're

  1094. like well I

  1095. just thought

  1096. the Old

  1097. Testament was

  1098. about God.

  1099. And if Jesus

  1100. was here he'd

  1101. be like oh

  1102. yeah you're

  1103. right.

  1104. It's about

  1105. me.

  1106. I fulfilled

  1107. it.

  1108. So here's

  1109. Jesus preaching

  1110. this sermon.

  1111. His inaugural

  1112. sermon and he

  1113. starts off saying

  1114. okay open up

  1115. your Bibles

  1116. to the whole

  1117. Bible and the

  1118. whole Bible is

  1119. about me.

  1120. I fulfilled

  1121. it.

  1122. It's all about

  1123. him.

  1124. He's the yes

  1125. and amen.

  1126. So this

  1127. morning if you

  1128. walk away from

  1129. here with just

  1130. one thing it

  1131. would be this.

  1132. The Old

  1133. Testament points

  1134. to Jesus.

  1135. And why do we

  1136. say that?

  1137. Because Jesus

  1138. said it.

  1139. I came not to

  1140. abolish the law

  1141. but to fulfill

  1142. it.

  1143. that's a game

  1144. changer.

  1145. It changes the

  1146. way you look at

  1147. your Old

  1148. Testament.

  1149. Because you

  1150. start seeing it

  1151. through Jesus.

  1152. Now I want you

  1153. to see this

  1154. warning he gives

  1155. in verse 19.

  1156. It's just the

  1157. first half of it.

  1158. Therefore

  1159. whoever relaxes

  1160. one of the least

  1161. of these commandments

  1162. and teaches

  1163. others to do the

  1164. same they'll be

  1165. called least in the

  1166. kingdom of heaven.

  1167. And so he's

  1168. trying to do a

  1169. corrective here.

  1170. And so he's

  1171. saying to his

  1172. disciples hey

  1173. don't misunderstand

  1174. what I'm saying.

  1175. I came to

  1176. fulfill the law

  1177. but that doesn't

  1178. mean you can

  1179. relax the law.

  1180. That doesn't

  1181. mean you can

  1182. kind of minimize

  1183. the least of the

  1184. commandments.

  1185. In that day

  1186. they made a

  1187. distinction between

  1188. the heavier matters

  1189. of the law and

  1190. the lighter matters

  1191. of the law.

  1192. And Jesus says

  1193. don't minimize

  1194. the lighter stuff.

  1195. And what we'll

  1196. see in the next

  1197. couple weeks is

  1198. how he corrects

  1199. that.

  1200. Just look down

  1201. to the whole

  1202. thing on anger

  1203. in verse 21.

  1204. You've heard that

  1205. it was said from

  1206. the Pharisees to

  1207. those of old

  1208. you shall not

  1209. murder.

  1210. And then Jesus

  1211. says but I say

  1212. to you.

  1213. Look what he

  1214. says.

  1215. But I say to

  1216. you that everyone

  1217. who is angry

  1218. with his brother

  1219. don't minimize

  1220. little stuff.

  1221. Don't minimize

  1222. that.

  1223. It's wrong to

  1224. commit adultery

  1225. but it's also

  1226. wrong to lust.

  1227. Don't minimize

  1228. that.

  1229. See what Jesus

  1230. is doing?

  1231. Man that guy

  1232. is brilliant.

  1233. And so what

  1234. he's doing here

  1235. is don't

  1236. mistake this.

  1237. My fulfilling

  1238. of the law

  1239. doesn't mean

  1240. it's no longer

  1241. binding.

  1242. It is.

  1243. Don't relax it.

  1244. In fact

  1245. Jesus is going

  1246. to say

  1247. I came to

  1248. raise the bar.

  1249. Now there's

  1250. always been a

  1251. temptation for

  1252. God's people

  1253. to make

  1254. adjustments

  1255. with the law.

  1256. One mistake

  1257. is this thing

  1258. called legalism

  1259. and that's the

  1260. belief that if

  1261. I obey the law

  1262. then God will

  1263. accept me.

  1264. I earn his

  1265. love through

  1266. performance.

  1267. And the

  1268. apostle Paul

  1269. will say

  1270. no, no, no,

  1271. no.

  1272. There's nothing

  1273. that you can do

  1274. to earn

  1275. acceptance with

  1276. God.

  1277. That's why

  1278. Jesus came.

  1279. That's why he

  1280. shed his blood.

  1281. That's why

  1282. in order for you

  1283. to be right in

  1284. God's eyes

  1285. God needs to

  1286. impute Christ's

  1287. righteousness to

  1288. you.

  1289. So don't make

  1290. that mistake.

  1291. But the other

  1292. mistake is the

  1293. mistake of

  1294. lawlessness.

  1295. From legalism

  1296. to lawlessness.

  1297. And what

  1298. lawlessness is

  1299. is this.

  1300. It's thinking

  1301. okay, Jesus

  1302. came to fulfill

  1303. the law and

  1304. so he's fulfilled

  1305. all of God's

  1306. requirements of

  1307. me.

  1308. Praise the

  1309. Lord.

  1310. And now he's

  1311. just covered

  1312. me with grace.

  1313. I can't out

  1314. sin God's grace.

  1315. So what I'm

  1316. going to do is

  1317. just sin and

  1318. sin and sin

  1319. and enjoy my

  1320. sin because I'm

  1321. just going to

  1322. be grace and

  1323. grace and

  1324. graced.

  1325. That's the

  1326. other mistake.

  1327. We can't make

  1328. either.

  1329. But what Jesus

  1330. is worrying about

  1331. right here is

  1332. don't relax

  1333. these commandments

  1334. because I've

  1335. fulfilled them.

  1336. Don't relax

  1337. them.

  1338. Just because

  1339. Jesus fulfilled

  1340. all the

  1341. commandments of

  1342. the Old

  1343. Testament and

  1344. for us even

  1345. that doesn't

  1346. mean they no

  1347. longer apply.

  1348. God is just

  1349. as holy now

  1350. as he was

  1351. then.

  1352. And he's

  1353. calling us to

  1354. a righteousness

  1355. that is an

  1356. essentially

  1357. different kind

  1358. of righteousness

  1359. that people were

  1360. seeing in

  1361. Jesus' day.

  1362. And so the

  1363. warning, don't

  1364. relax the law.

  1365. And now Jesus

  1366. is going to

  1367. bring some

  1368. action.

  1369. Look at the

  1370. second half of

  1371. 19 and 20.

  1372. And this is the

  1373. last point of

  1374. this morning's

  1375. sermon.

  1376. Jesus calls

  1377. his followers

  1378. to a new

  1379. kind of

  1380. righteousness.

  1381. A kingdom

  1382. righteousness.

  1383. He says,

  1384. but whoever

  1385. does them

  1386. and teaches

  1387. them the

  1388. commandments

  1389. will be

  1390. called great

  1391. in the

  1392. kingdom of

  1393. heaven.

  1394. For I

  1395. tell you,

  1396. unless your

  1397. righteousness

  1398. exceeds that

  1399. of the

  1400. scribes and

  1401. Pharisees,

  1402. you'll never

  1403. enter the

  1404. kingdom of

  1405. heaven.

  1406. He's like,

  1407. don't relax

  1408. them.

  1409. I'm calling

  1410. you something

  1411. that exceeds

  1412. the righteousness

  1413. of the

  1414. scribes and

  1415. Pharisees.

  1416. So the

  1417. Pharisees were

  1418. known to do

  1419. things like

  1420. this.

  1421. They would

  1422. have their

  1423. cloak and

  1424. they would

  1425. kind of hold

  1426. their cloak

  1427. close to

  1428. them while

  1429. they're walking

  1430. through crowds

  1431. because they

  1432. didn't want to

  1433. touch the

  1434. rabble.

  1435. They didn't

  1436. want to be

  1437. made impure.

  1438. And so when

  1439. Jesus is talking

  1440. about the

  1441. righteousness of

  1442. the Pharisees,

  1443. his disciples

  1444. were like,

  1445. what?

  1446. More righteous

  1447. than them?

  1448. And what

  1449. Jesus is

  1450. actually talking

  1451. about is a

  1452. new kind of

  1453. righteousness.

  1454. A new

  1455. covenant kind

  1456. of righteousness.

  1457. An internally

  1458. born of the

  1459. Holy Spirit

  1460. righteousness.

  1461. You see,

  1462. this righteousness

  1463. that Jesus is

  1464. getting at is

  1465. not an outward

  1466. conforming for

  1467. the eyes of

  1468. man kind of

  1469. righteousness which

  1470. he rails on

  1471. the Pharisees

  1472. about.

  1473. No, the

  1474. righteousness

  1475. that Jesus

  1476. is calling

  1477. his disciples

  1478. and us

  1479. to is an

  1480. inner obedience

  1481. born of the

  1482. Holy Spirit

  1483. that wants to

  1484. glorify God

  1485. the Father.

  1486. That's what

  1487. he's doing

  1488. in us.

  1489. This is the

  1490. kind of

  1491. righteousness

  1492. that exceeds

  1493. the Pharisees

  1494. and scribes.

  1495. It's this

  1496. kind of

  1497. righteousness

  1498. that if you

  1499. look ahead

  1500. to chapter 5

  1501. verse 48,

  1502. that's the

  1503. perfect.

  1504. A

  1505. righteousness

  1506. within and

  1507. without.

  1508. Jesus is

  1509. raising the

  1510. bar of

  1511. righteousness.

  1512. Better yet,

  1513. he's saying

  1514. there's a

  1515. qualitatively

  1516. different kind

  1517. of holiness

  1518. I'm calling

  1519. you to live

  1520. by and it

  1521. comes through

  1522. me, the

  1523. fulfiller of

  1524. the Old

  1525. Testament.

  1526. I want to

  1527. start wrapping

  1528. things up here.

  1529. here.

  1530. But here's

  1531. one of the

  1532. things I want

  1533. you to see.

  1534. Have you

  1535. heard of the

  1536. Rosetta Stone?

  1537. The Rosetta

  1538. Stone was

  1539. this rock

  1540. steel, it's

  1541. called, found

  1542. in 1799 in

  1543. northern Africa.

  1544. Found by a

  1545. soldier.

  1546. Up until this

  1547. point, people

  1548. didn't know how

  1549. to make sense of

  1550. Egyptian hieroglyphics.

  1551. It was like,

  1552. what does that

  1553. mean?

  1554. We don't know

  1555. what it's

  1556. saying here.

  1557. And then when

  1558. this discovery of

  1559. the Rosetta Stone

  1560. was found, it

  1561. unlocked the

  1562. language.

  1563. Because the

  1564. Rosetta Stone

  1565. had three

  1566. languages on

  1567. it.

  1568. There was

  1569. Egyptian

  1570. hieroglyphics

  1571. on the top,

  1572. and then there

  1573. was another

  1574. language called

  1575. Domotic.

  1576. I have no idea

  1577. what that is.

  1578. And then there's

  1579. another language

  1580. called Ancient

  1581. Greek.

  1582. And they

  1583. were all

  1584. translations of

  1585. a decree of a

  1586. king from

  1587. Egypt from

  1588. 196 B.C.

  1589. They're all

  1590. saying the

  1591. same thing.

  1592. And so that

  1593. gave scholars

  1594. the key to

  1595. understanding

  1596. Egyptian

  1597. hieroglyphics.

  1598. It was the

  1599. Rosetta Stone.

  1600. It unlocked

  1601. the hidden

  1602. meaning of

  1603. hieroglyphics.

  1604. Jesus is our

  1605. Rosetta Stone.

  1606. He unlocks

  1607. for us the

  1608. true meaning

  1609. intent of the

  1610. Old Testament.

  1611. Because the

  1612. Old Testament is

  1613. all about Him.

  1614. And now He's

  1615. calling us to

  1616. live in a way

  1617. that is pleasing

  1618. to Him.

  1619. Jesus is calling

  1620. us to a

  1621. righteousness

  1622. that we can't

  1623. produce ourselves.

  1624. It's a work of

  1625. God in us.

  1626. Would you turn

  1627. in your Bible

  1628. to Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1629. chapter 8?

  1630. This is what

  1631. Jesus is

  1632. introducing.

  1633. This is the

  1634. new covenant

  1635. which He's

  1636. bringing with

  1637. Him.

  1638. Romans 8

    Romans 8:4

  1639. verse 4.

  1640. Let's start

  1641. in verse 3.

  1642. For God has

  1643. done what the

  1644. law weakened

  1645. by the flesh

  1646. could not do

  1647. by sending

  1648. His own Son

  1649. in the likeness

  1650. of sinful flesh

  1651. and for sin

  1652. He condemned

  1653. in the flesh

  1654. in order that

  1655. the righteous

  1656. requirement of

  1657. the law

  1658. might be

  1659. fulfilled in

  1660. us who

  1661. walk,

  1662. who obey,

  1663. not according

  1664. to the flesh

  1665. but according

  1666. to the

  1667. Spirit.

  1668. Jesus is the

  1669. fulfillment of

  1670. the Old Testament

  1671. and He brings

  1672. with Him a

  1673. whole new way

  1674. of relating

  1675. to God.

  1676. A whole new

  1677. kind of

  1678. righteousness

  1679. born of

  1680. His Spirit.

  1681. What we're

  1682. going to be

  1683. seeing in the

  1684. rest of Jesus'

  1685. sermon,

  1686. the Sermon on

  1687. the Mount,

  1688. is how this

  1689. righteousness is

  1690. lived out.

  1691. He's going to

  1692. correct us on

  1693. some things

  1694. and He's going

  1695. to direct us

  1696. on some things.

  1697. But He's

  1698. introducing now

  1699. that Jesus,

  1700. He's the

  1701. fulfiller of

  1702. the Old Testament.

  1703. He's got a

  1704. high view of

  1705. the Old Testament.

  1706. He didn't come

  1707. to abolish it

  1708. but to fulfill

  1709. it.

  1710. He warned us

  1711. not to relax

  1712. it because He's

  1713. calling us to

  1714. a new kind

  1715. of righteousness,

  1716. a Spirit-born

  1717. Ezekiel 36,

  1718. Spirit-within-us

  1719. kind of righteousness.

  1720. So in order

  1721. to close,

  1722. let me just

  1723. ask this.

  1724. Who can say

  1725. something like

  1726. this?

  1727. Who can say

  1728. that the Old

  1729. Testament's about

  1730. me but God

  1731. alone?

  1732. It's about Him.

  1733. All of God's

  1734. plan for the

  1735. fullness of time

  1736. is uniting all

  1737. things in Christ.

  1738. So two things,

  1739. very quick.

  1740. because this sets

  1741. Jesus apart,

  1742. you know what?

  1743. You know what we

  1744. need to do?

  1745. Follow Him

  1746. and listen to Him.

  1747. He's our

  1748. Rosetta Stone.

  1749. Let me pray.

  1750. God in Heaven,

  1751. thank You so much.

  1752. Thank You so much

  1753. that You,

  1754. Jesus,

  1755. that You are the

  1756. focal point of the

  1757. entire Bible.

  1758. Thank You,

  1759. Jesus,

  1760. that You have

  1761. provided what we

  1762. need in order to

  1763. walk in righteousness

  1764. now.

  1765. You've supplied us

  1766. with Your own

  1767. righteousness,

  1768. and that You've

  1769. indwelt us with

  1770. Your Spirit so we

  1771. can experience it

  1772. too.

  1773. Lord Jesus,

  1774. thank You.

  1775. Thank You for Your

  1776. words.

1777. In Your name we pray.

  1778. Amen.

  1779. Amen.
