  1. And as they're leaving, I just thought we could all be honest about something this morning.

  2. All of us get angry.

  3. All of us deal with anger.

  4. And so, you might be like Kilauea.

  5. You know what Kilauea is?

  6. It's the volcano in Hawaii that is constantly erupting.

  7. You have an erupting kind of anger.

  8. People know it when you're anger.

  9. Stuff gets spewed out.

  10. Lava flows.

  11. Things rumble.

  12. Maybe your anger is Kilauea-like.

  13. Volcanic.

  14. Obvious.

  15. Or maybe your anger shows up more like Yellowstone.

  16. Yellowstone National Park.

  17. Beautiful, serene.

  18. Or so it appears until you start thinking about why is Old Faithful here?

  19. Why are there so many warm springs around here?

  20. And then you start to realize underneath this very serene place is one of the biggest volcanoes on earth.

  21. Many of us simmer in our anger.

  22. It's just below the surface.

  23. And it gets vented once in a while.

  24. So some of us are erupting volcanoes.

  25. Some of us are just kind of simmering under the surface.

  26. But all of us have anger.

  27. Now this morning, I just want to make sure,

  28. as we turn to the words of Jesus in Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  29. He's going to say some things that are incredibly searching.

  30. They're going to search your heart.

  31. He's going to expose something in us all.

  32. And what you need to know up front is,

  33. Jesus is not going to call anger a personality quirk.

  34. And Jesus isn't going to say,

  35. hey, all of us are human.

  36. All of us get angry.

  37. So it's just a common human emotion.

  38. So it's okay.

  39. Jesus is going to bring anger under the sixth commandment.

  40. He's going to call it murderous.

  41. It's not okay.

  42. At the heart of murder is anger.

  43. And anger is this ember

  44. that when aflamed can result in all sorts of destructive actions.

  45. So would you turn with me now to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  46. We're going to look at verses 21-26.

  47. Jesus says,

  48. You've heard that it was said to those of old,

  49. you shall not murder,

  50. and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.

  51. But I say to you

  52. that everyone who's angry with his brother

  53. will be liable to judgment.

  54. Whoever insults his brother

  55. will be liable to the council.

  56. And whoever says you fool

  57. will be liable to the hell of fire.

  58. So if you're offering your brother

  59. at the altar

  60. and there remember that your brother has something against you,

  61. leave your gift there before the altar and go.

  62. First be reconciled to your brother

  63. and then come and offer your gift.

  64. Come to terms quickly with your accuser

  65. while you're going with him to court.

  66. Lest your accuser hand you over to the judge

  67. and the judge to the guard

  68. and you be put in prison.

  69. Truly I say to you,

  70. you will never get out

  71. until you have paid the last penny.

  72. This morning what Jesus does

  73. is he shines the floodlight

  74. of the sixth commandment on our hearts.

  75. And what he exposes in our hearts

  76. is a murderous anger.

  77. A murderous anger

  78. that will erupt into hateful words.

  79. Destructive words.

  80. And so this morning,

  81. what Jesus helps us to see

  82. is our anger in light of the sixth commandment.

  83. He has come not to abolish the law,

  84. but to fulfill it.

  85. And so he helps us to understand

  86. the true meaning and scope

  87. of the sixth commandment.

  88. He helps us to see our anger

  89. for what it really is.

  90. What Jesus is going to do here

  91. is he's going to expose

  92. our murderous anger

  93. and then call us

  94. to be kingdom peacemakers.

  95. It's amazing what he does.

  96. And so this morning,

  97. I want you to see three things.

  98. First is this.

  99. I want to remind you

  100. who the I is

  101. of the one who said,

  102. but I say to you.

  103. We've got to remember

  104. who's actually speaking these words.

  105. And then the second thing

  106. is the true meaning

  107. of the sixth commandment.

  108. We'll camp out in verse 22 for that.

  109. And then we're going to see

  110. the kingdom implications.

  111. This exceeding righteousness

  112. that Jesus calls us to.

  113. And that's laid out

  114. in verses 23 through 26

  115. where Jesus calls us

  116. to be peacemakers.

  117. Let's look at this

  118. first step.

  119. The I.

  120. Who is this one speaking?

  121. Verse 22, if you'll notice.

  122. But I say to you,

  123. it's red ink.

  124. Jesus is speaking.

  125. Now, if you are familiar

  126. with the book of Matthew,

  127. up until this point,

  128. Matthew's been making a case

  129. about the one speaking.

  130. If you just turn in your Bible

  131. to Matthew 1,

  132. chapter 1, verse 1,

  133. we see the book

  134. of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,

  135. the son of David.

  136. David.

  137. He is going to...

  138. He's the king.

  139. The long-awaited king.

  140. Son of David.

  141. The son of Abraham.

  142. The one in whom God

  143. is going to bless

  144. all the nations of the earth.

  145. He is Emmanuel.

  146. God with us.

  147. That's chapter 1, verse 23.

  148. He's the one that is worshipped

  149. by pagan kings in 2.11.

  150. He's the one that withstood

  151. the temptations of the devil

  152. with the shield of faith

  153. and the sword of the Spirit.

  154. He did what none of us could do.

  155. And so what you need to know

  156. of this one speaking,

  157. this one who said,

  158. but I say,

  159. this is God incarnate speaking.

  160. And He's speaking to us this morning.

  161. And so when you step back

  162. and you start realizing,

  163. okay,

  164. the king has come.

  165. What we have here

  166. in the Sermon on the Mount

  167. is His inaugural address.

  168. It's Him speaking to His citizens

  169. and declaring to them,

  170. this is how you live for me now.

  171. This is His manifesto of the kingdom.

  172. And so the Sermon on the Mount,

  173. what we have in chapters 5, 6, and 7

  174. is a sermon.

  175. Last week I tried to show you

  176. that the Beatitudes

  177. are the introduction

  178. and the close of the sermon

  179. starts in chapter 7, verse 13,

  180. where He calls us to two ways to live.

  181. He calls us to decision.

  182. And in between the body of the text,

  183. Jesus says,

  184. open up your Bibles

  185. to the Old Testament

  186. and here's my point.

  187. The Old Testament

  188. is fulfilled by Me.

  189. He preaches Himself

  190. from the Old Testament.

  191. And so Jesus fulfills

  192. the Law and the Prophets

  193. in His person.

  194. He's the Messiah.

  195. But He also fulfills it

  196. in His preaching.

  197. He brings the true meaning

  198. of the Old Testament.

  199. What the Law and Prophets

  200. really meant to say.

  201. And that's what we see Him doing

  202. right here.

  203. In the next couple sections,

  204. if you just look at Matthew 5,

  205. starting in verse 21,

  206. you probably have a heading over it

  207. that says,

  208. Anger.

  209. And then if you continue to look,

  210. there's another heading

  211. called Lust, Divorce, Oaths,

  212. Retaliation,

  213. Love Your Enemies.

  214. And in each one,

  215. there's this contrasting statement

  216. that leads that off.

  217. Jesus says something

  218. to the extent of,

  219. you've heard that it was said

  220. about adultery,

  221. but I say,

  222. anyone who lusts in his heart.

  223. And so each time,

  224. each of these six examples,

  225. Jesus is bringing,

  226. fulfilling the true meaning

  227. of God's Law.

  228. He is saying,

  229. what the Pharisees and scribes

  230. are teaching you,

  231. disregard.

  232. Listen to what I have to say.

  233. I am the Incarnate Word

  234. with all authority

  235. to clarify this written Word of God.

  236. And so, this morning,

  237. we're looking at the first

  238. of these six examples.

  239. You've heard that it was said

  240. to those of old,

  241. you shall not murder,

  242. and whoever murders

  243. will be liable to judgment,

  244. but I say to you

  245. that everyone who is angry

  246. with his brother

  247. will be liable to judgment.

  248. Remember the one speaking here.

  249. This is God incarnate,

  250. and He's speaking

  251. with all authority

  252. on what murder really means.

  253. And to that end,

  254. let's move to the true meaning

  255. of you shall not murder.

  256. Jesus is essentially saying,

  257. let me clarify

  258. this murder thing for you.

  259. Would you flip back

  260. in your Bibles

  261. to Exodus chapter 20?

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  262. I'm guessing that you approach

  263. the command,

  264. you shall not murder,

  265. kind of like the way

  266. I approach,

  267. you shall not murder.

  268. And it's the way

  269. the Jews of the time

  270. approached,

  271. you shall not murder.

  272. So let's go to Exodus chapter 20,

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  273. the Ten Commandments,

  274. and let's do a little

  275. diagnostic test.

  276. Okay?

  277. How are you guys doing?

  278. How are you guys doing?

  279. Are you worshiping other gods?

  280. Do you have any other gods

  281. before you?

  282. And you might say,

  283. by and large,

  284. no.

  285. I'm a follower of Jesus.

  286. I'm a worship of the triune

  287. God of the Bible.

  288. I have my moments,

  289. but generally speaking,

  290. I'm living for the one true God.

  291. Check.

  292. So the second question is,

  293. are you making any carved images

  294. of your God?

  295. Are you building anything

  296. in your house

  297. to worship at?

  298. And you say,

  299. no.

  300. Check.

  301. And the next one,

  302. you shall not take the name

  303. of the Lord in your vein.

  304. Are you using Jesus' name

  305. as a cuss word?

  306. No.

  307. Check.

  308. Next one.

  309. Remember the Sabbath.

  310. Are you taking one day of rest?

  311. Rest every week.

  312. Are you resting?

  313. You're like,

  314. most of the time.

  315. Check.

  316. Then we go to the next one.

  317. Honor your father and your mother.

  318. And you're like,

  319. well, when I was young,

  320. not really,

  321. but now I'm doing everything

  322. I can to help them.

  323. Doing everything I can

  324. to honor them.

  325. And then we get to verse 13.

  326. It says,

  327. you shall not murder.

  328. And in our minds,

  329. we think,

  330. I haven't killed anybody.

  331. Check.

  332. And what Jesus is saying here

  333. is like,

  334. no.

  335. Slow down.

  336. Because this command

  337. has more to do

  338. with just shedding blood.

  339. This makes a claim

  340. on the anger in your heart.

  341. But,

  342. at the time

  343. of Jesus teaching this,

  344. the current teaching of the day

  345. was putting some restrictions

  346. on the sixth commandment.

  347. The Jews of the day

  348. were limiting the sixth commandment

  349. to just the physical act

  350. of murder.

  351. Of homicide.

  352. Jesus is not addressing here

  353. death and war.

  354. He's not talking about

  355. capital punishment.

  356. What he's getting at

  357. is intentional homicide.

  358. And so the Jews of the day

  359. were saying,

  360. well,

  361. hey,

  362. it's just limited

  363. to the physical act

  364. of shedding blood.

  365. That's the first restriction

  366. they were doing.

  367. And the second restriction

  368. they were doing

  369. is the kind of judgment.

  370. The consequence

  371. of shedding blood.

  372. And you see that showing up

  373. back in Matthew.

  374. Matthew 5

  375. where Jesus says,

  376. you've heard that it said

  377. you shall not murder

  378. and whoever murders

  379. will be liable to judgment.

  380. The judgment there

  381. is what was being taught.

  382. It was kind of an expansion

  383. of Numbers 35

    Numbers 35:30

  384. verses 30 and 31

  385. where the focus was

  386. if you're a murderer,

  387. you go before a human court

  388. and there needs to be

  389. two witnesses

  390. to prove your guilt.

  391. And so the thought was

  392. limited to human judgment.

  393. Human court.

  394. So the restrictions

  395. taking place at the time

  396. were a physical act

  397. and the consequence

  398. was focused on

  399. a human counsel,

  400. a human judgment.

  401. We all do that.

  402. We all tend to think

  403. about murder that way,

  404. don't we?

  405. We all tend to think

  406. about it as the shedding

  407. of blood

  408. and if we do,

  409. then we've got to

  410. stand before a judge

  411. and jury someday.

  412. In walks Jesus.

  413. In walks the fulfiller

  414. of the law

  415. and the prophets.

  416. And what He's about to say

  417. is going to extend

  418. the reach

  419. of the sixth commandment.

  420. Look what He says.

  421. You have heard

  422. that it was said

  423. to those of old

  424. you shall not murder

  425. and whoever murders

  426. will be liable

  427. to judgment.

  428. But I say to you

  429. that everyone

  430. who is angry

  431. with his brother

  432. will be liable

  433. to judgment.

  434. What Jesus is doing here

  435. is extending

  436. the reach

  437. of the sixth commandment

  438. past the physical act

  439. and into our hearts.

  440. And He's addressing

  441. anger in our hearts.

  442. That destructive impulse

  443. in us

  444. that reacts

  445. to when

  446. we are personally offended.

  447. It's like right there.

  448. That's murder.

  449. That's murder at heart.

  450. That's murderous intent.

  451. You're looking to destroy.

  452. He's getting at

  453. anger as something

  454. that is a destructive attitude

  455. within us.

  456. Anger is at the heart

  457. of murder.

  458. That's what Jesus

  459. is getting at.

  460. And so He's putting this

  461. on a continuum.

  462. And so if murder

  463. is the culmination

  464. of something,

  465. anger is the seed of it.

  466. It's the starting point.

  467. It's when we're personally offended.

  468. Where our hearts go.

  469. And it can result in

  470. divisions

  471. and disunity.

  472. Anger can be dangerous.

  473. Anger can be deadly.

  474. Not only does Jesus

  475. extend the reach

  476. of murder

  477. to include

  478. this thing in our hearts

  479. called anger

  480. which we've all experienced.

  481. Jesus extends the reach

  482. of this

  483. prohibition

  484. to murder

  485. to include

  486. your speech.

  487. Look back at

  488. verse 22.

  489. But I say to you

  490. that everyone

  491. who's angry with his brother

  492. will be liable

  493. to judgment.

  494. Whoever

  495. insults his brother

  496. will be liable

  497. to the council.

  498. You see that word

  499. insults?

  500. There's actually

  501. a word underneath there.

  502. The word is

  503. raka.

  504. And what it is

  505. is

  506. it's a word

  507. that basically

  508. if we

  509. use it today

  510. would be like

  511. blockhead.

  512. Doofus.

  513. And what it is

  514. is

  515. it's a word

  516. that is used

  517. to attack

  518. someone's intellect.

  519. And so

  520. essentially

  521. this insult

  522. is a particular

  523. insult.

  524. It's calling

  525. someone stupid.

  526. stupid.

  527. And so

  528. what we see

  529. here is

  530. anger in our

  531. hearts

  532. progressing

  533. to our speech.

  534. Out of

  535. the heart

  536. the mouth

  537. speaks.

  538. And so

  539. when he calls

  540. someone stupid

  541. it's murderous.

  542. You're looking

  543. to injure

  544. them.

  545. Harm

  546. them.

  547. Reduce

  548. their worth.

  549. Continuing on

  550. verse 22

  551. we read this.

  552. Whoever says

  553. you fool

  554. will be liable

  555. to the hell

  556. of fire.

  557. So we've

  558. looked at that

  559. word raka

  560. which means

  561. stupid.

  562. This word fool

  563. is getting at

  564. a different

  565. aspect of

  566. someone.

  567. Their character.

  568. You're calling

  569. someone a

  570. scoundrel.

  571. It's literally

  572. character

  573. assassination.

  574. So Jesus

  575. is saying

  576. when you

  577. call someone

  578. raka

  579. stupid.

  580. When you

  581. call someone

  582. a scoundrel

  583. those words

  584. are murderous

  585. words.

  586. They are

  587. aimed

  588. to destroy.

  589. They're aimed

  590. to hurt.

  591. To reduce

  592. somebody.

  593. Jesus is getting

  594. at a progression

  595. of sin.

  596. Out of the

  597. heart

  598. the mouth

  599. speaks.

  600. Have you

  601. ever said

  602. something in

  603. your mind

  604. or heard

  605. someone said

  606. I wish him

  607. good as

  608. dead.

  609. Have you

  610. ever heard

  611. anybody say

  612. that?

  613. Maybe that's

  614. come out of

  615. your mouth

  616. before.

  617. You see the

  618. murderous intent

  619. behind that?

  620. I wish this

  621. person off the

  622. face of the

  623. earth.

  624. See what's

  625. going on there

  626. through this

  627. grid Jesus

  628. is giving

  629. us?

  630. Jesus

  631. doesn't

  632. just

  633. extend

  634. the reach

  635. of the

  636. sixth

  637. commandment

  638. to our

  639. hearts

  640. and to

  641. our

  642. speech

  643. he extends

  644. the

  645. consequence

  646. of it.

  647. He moves

  648. beyond

  649. human

  650. eyes.

  651. Look at

  652. that last

  653. piece he

  654. says in

  655. verse 22

  656. whoever says

  657. you fool

  658. will be

  659. liable

  660. to the

  661. hell

  662. of fire.

  663. Literally

  664. the fire

  665. of Gehenna.

  666. Gehenna was

  667. a dump

  668. outside of

  669. Jerusalem

  670. and it

  671. was horrific.

  672. The worst

  673. stuff was

  674. put there.

  675. There were

  676. smoldering

  677. fires.

  678. Corpses of

  679. criminals

  680. were put

  681. in

  682. Gehenna.

  683. It was a

  684. nasty,

  685. nasty

  686. place.

  687. And so it

  688. became synonymous

  689. with outcasts,

  690. destruction,

  691. punishment.

  692. And what Jesus

  693. has in mind

  694. here is

  695. divine

  696. judgment.

  697. He's talking

  698. about hell.

  699. anger.

  700. The consequence

  701. of angry

  702. hearts

  703. moving towards

  704. angry speech

  705. that are aimed

  706. to destroy

  707. people,

  708. it's murderous.

  709. And it bears

  710. not only a

  711. human consequence,

  712. but a divine

  713. consequence.

  714. You're offending

  715. God.

  716. Your sinful

  717. anger is

  718. provoking

  719. God's

  720. righteous

  721. anger.

  722. You might be

  723. sitting in your

  724. seat right now

  725. and you're

  726. like, oh

  727. Jesus, come on,

  728. let up.

  729. Seriously.

  730. Isn't there

  731. this thing

  732. called righteous

  733. indignation?

  734. How many

  735. have gone

  736. there so far?

  737. But what

  738. about that?

  739. is Jesus

  740. absolutizing

  741. all anger

  742. right here?

  743. Is He saying

  744. that all

  745. anger for

  746. all time

  747. that comes

  748. out of

  749. every human

  750. heart

  751. is murderous?

  752. Is He saying

  753. that?

  754. He's not

  755. saying that.

  756. Because elsewhere

  757. in our Bibles,

  758. like Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  759. chapter 4,

  760. 26 and 27,

  761. we're told

  762. to be angry

  763. and do

  764. not sin.

  765. Quoting

  766. a psalm.

  767. I mean,

  768. we even see

  769. in Jesus'

  770. very life,

  771. the God-man,

  772. He never,

  773. in His anger

  774. and He got

  775. angry,

  776. He never

  777. sinned.

  778. God the

  779. Father,

  780. His wrath

  781. is a

  782. righteous,

  783. holy wrath

  784. so that we

  785. know that

  786. there is

  787. this thing

  788. called

  789. righteous

  790. indignation.

  791. And so

  792. Jesus isn't

  793. absolutizing

  794. here,

  795. but He

  796. is generalizing.

  797. He's saying

  798. by and

  799. large,

  800. our anger,

  801. we flare

  802. up against

  803. personal

  804. offense.

  805. We take

  806. things

  807. personally.

  808. And we

  809. go

  810. raka.

  811. We go

  812. you fool.

  813. We have

  814. murderous

  815. intent

  816. as a

  817. result.

  818. It's that

  819. incendiary

  820. reaction

  821. when we

  822. perceive a

  823. wrong done

  824. to us.

  825. And Jesus,

  826. so Jesus is

  827. saying here,

  828. you know,

  829. there are

  830. exceptions,

  831. but by and

  832. large,

  833. all of us

  834. know that

  835. our anger

  836. is an

  837. anger that

  838. is unrighteous.

  839. So Jesus

  840. isn't

  841. absolutizing,

  842. but He is

  843. generalizing.

  844. Just a

  845. word of

  846. caution.

  847. If you

  848. find yourself

  849. in a

  850. situation

  851. where you've

  852. got a

  853. cause,

  854. it's a

  855. righteous

  856. cause,

  857. and it

  858. makes you

  859. angry,

  860. and you

  861. know that

  862. this anger

  863. is close

  864. to God's

  865. heart,

  866. like God

  867. is angry

  868. over this,

  869. be careful.

  870. Even your

  871. righteous

  872. indignation

  873. can be

  874. unstable.

  875. It can

  876. result in

  877. thinking of

  878. people as

  879. villains.

  880. Be careful.

  881. all anger

  882. is dangerous.

  883. So what I

  884. want to show

  885. you here is

  886. this.

  887. In Jesus

  888. expanding the

  889. sixth commandment,

  890. this is what

  891. He's done.

  892. He's brought

  893. His ten

  894. pound

  895. messianic

  896. sledgehammer

  897. to the

  898. sixth

  899. commandment,

  900. and He

  901. has just

  902. smashed down

  903. these walls

  904. that have been

  905. built up around

  906. it that were

  907. never supposed

  908. to be there.

  909. And He's

  910. saying,

  911. no,

  912. don't limit

  913. the sixth

  914. commandment

  915. to just

  916. the physical

  917. slaying of

  918. blood.

  919. Don't limit

  920. it just to

  921. the consequences

  922. with man.

  923. No,

  924. no,

  925. no.

  926. Let me smash

  927. these down

  928. so that you

  929. can see

  930. this commandment

  931. and feel

  932. the claim

  933. it makes

  934. on you.

  935. So murder

  936. is not just

  937. an outward

  938. physical act.

  939. It has to do

  940. with your heart.

  941. What goes on

  942. the inside.

  943. Your attitude

  944. towards others.

  945. Murder is not

  946. just the

  947. shedding of

  948. blood.

  949. It includes

  950. this wounding

  951. speech that

  952. diminishes the

  953. worth of

  954. people.

  955. It's the

  956. literal character

  957. assassination

  958. in which we

  959. kill people

  960. with our

  961. words.

  962. And it's

  963. just not the

  964. consequence of

  965. a human

  966. court.

  967. Our

  968. unrighteous

  969. anger provokes

  970. God's righteous

  971. wrath.

  972. And so the

  973. Pharisees had

  974. restricted the

  975. full impact of

  976. the sixth

  977. commandment.

  978. And here Jesus

  979. is the

  980. fulfiller of

  981. all the

  982. Old Testament

  983. saying this

  984. is what it

  985. really means.

  986. Jesus is

  987. fulfilling the

  988. true purpose

  989. of the law.

  990. The law

  991. exposes the

  992. sinfulness of

  993. our sin.

  994. salvation.

  995. It reveals our

  996. hearts for what

  997. they truly

  998. are.

  999. It shows us

  1000. that we may

  1001. do an initial

  1002. glance through the

  1003. Ten Commandments

  1004. and think we're

  1005. okay, we've never

  1006. murdered anybody.

  1007. But as we hear

  1008. Jesus speaking here,

  1009. we need to realize

  1010. actually we have

  1011. transgressed the

  1012. sixth commandment.

  1013. Why is anger

  1014. wrong?

  1015. It's murderous in

  1016. its intent.

  1017. It's destructive in

  1018. its intent.

  1019. But as David read

  1020. earlier, what the

  1021. law also does, it

  1022. just not exposes our

  1023. sin, it leads us

  1024. to Jesus.

  1025. It exposes our

  1026. need for our

  1027. Savior.

  1028. So listen to this.

  1029. This is what's so

  1030. amazing about the

  1031. one speaking.

  1032. Not only did He

  1033. come to fulfill

  1034. in His person,

  1035. in His preaching,

  1036. He came to

  1037. fulfill,

  1038. He lived a

  1039. perfect life.

  1040. He never sinned

  1041. in His anger.

  1042. And He went

  1043. to the cross

  1044. and died

  1045. and bore

  1046. the righteous

  1047. wrath of God

  1048. for the

  1049. murderous hearts

  1050. of those who

  1051. would one day

  1052. come and believe

  1053. in Him.

  1054. You and me.

  1055. Jesus died for

  1056. murderers.

  1057. Whether that's a

  1058. physical act

  1059. or it's the

  1060. attitude of your

  1061. heart

  1062. or it's the

  1063. words that you

  1064. say.

  1065. Jesus

  1066. bore the

  1067. fire of

  1068. hell

  1069. for the

  1070. anger

  1071. of our

  1072. hearts.

  1073. peace.

  1074. Do you know

  1075. what the result

  1076. of that was?

  1077. Peace.

  1078. Peace.

  1079. No more

  1080. wrath.

  1081. No more

  1082. hostility.

  1083. Jesus brought

  1084. peace.

  1085. The last

  1086. move I want

  1087. to show you

  1088. in this passage

  1089. is in

  1090. verses

  1091. 23-26.

  1092. I'm going

  1093. to focus

  1094. mainly on

  1095. 23-24.

  1096. But Jesus

  1097. here calls

  1098. us to

  1099. a righteousness

  1100. that exceeds

  1101. the Pharisees

  1102. and the scribes.

  1103. Jesus calls

  1104. us to be

  1105. peacemakers.

  1106. Blessed are

  1107. the peacemakers

  1108. for they shall

  1109. be called

  1110. sons of God.

  1111. The two

  1112. examples He

  1113. brings up

  1114. are a

  1115. worship service

  1116. and on your

  1117. way to small

  1118. claims court.

  1119. So in

  1120. verses 23

  1121. and 24

  1122. we read

  1123. this.

  1124. So if you

  1125. are offering

  1126. your gift

  1127. at the

  1128. altar,

  1129. notice where

  1130. this is

  1131. taking place?

  1132. This is

  1133. taking place

  1134. in the

  1135. temple.

  1136. People

  1137. bringing

  1138. their

  1139. gift

  1140. to the

  1141. altar

  1142. to worship

  1143. God.

  1144. And then

  1145. what Jesus

  1146. points out

  1147. is,

  1148. so if

  1149. you're

  1150. coming to

  1151. a church

  1152. service,

  1153. if you're

  1154. about to

  1155. put your

  1156. money into

  1157. the plate,

  1158. if you're

  1159. bringing your

  1160. gift,

  1161. and then

  1162. He says,

  1163. if you

  1164. remember that

  1165. your brother

  1166. has something

  1167. against you.

  1168. So you've

  1169. come to the

  1170. church service

  1171. and you

  1172. remember that

  1173. there's a

  1174. brother or

  1175. sister that

  1176. has something

  1177. against you.

  1178. Now,

  1179. that something

  1180. against you

  1181. is somewhat

  1182. vague.

  1183. Jesus isn't

  1184. being clear

  1185. and He's

  1186. intentionally

  1187. being vague

  1188. because that

  1189. leaves open

  1190. the door

  1191. for this.

  1192. if I'm

  1193. coming to

  1194. the service

  1195. and I'm

  1196. remembering

  1197. someone who

  1198. I have

  1199. gotten angry

  1200. with and

  1201. offended,

  1202. or if I

  1203. remember someone

  1204. who's gotten

  1205. angry with me

  1206. and given me

  1207. offense,

  1208. it can be

  1209. either.

  1210. Someone with

  1211. something against

  1212. me.

  1213. What am I to

  1214. do?

  1215. What are you

  1216. to do?

  1217. You're to go

  1218. to them.

  1219. You're to put

  1220. down your

  1221. gift and

  1222. you are to

  1223. go to

  1224. them.

  1225. Go to

  1226. them for

  1227. what purpose?

  1228. To make

  1229. peace with

  1230. them.

  1231. Now,

  1232. I'm not sure

  1233. if you picked

  1234. up on this,

  1235. but there's

  1236. an urgency

  1237. with what

  1238. Jesus is

  1239. talking about.

  1240. I mean,

  1241. seriously,

  1242. worshiping God

  1243. in His

  1244. sanctuary is

  1245. like wonderful.

  1246. Big priority,

  1247. right?

  1248. Why is

  1249. God saying,

  1250. don't give

  1251. me your

  1252. gift.

  1253. Go to

  1254. your brother.

  1255. Why would

  1256. God tell

  1257. us to do

  1258. that?

  1259. Here's why.

  1260. God values

  1261. the unity

  1262. of His

  1263. people.

  1264. God puts

  1265. a huge

  1266. premium on

  1267. the unity

  1268. of His

  1269. people.

  1270. God wants

  1271. us to be

  1272. united with

  1273. each other

  1274. in our

  1275. worship of

  1276. Him.

  1277. And if

  1278. there's

  1279. something out

  1280. of sorts

  1281. between any

  1282. of us,

  1283. He says,

  1284. go fix

  1285. that first

  1286. and then

  1287. come

  1288. worship

  1289. Me.

  1290. God is

  1291. very concerned

  1292. about the

  1293. effects of

  1294. anger in

  1295. our midst.

  1296. Christ.

  1297. It can

  1298. bring

  1299. discord

  1300. and that

  1301. discord is

  1302. like a

  1303. disease to

  1304. the body

  1305. of God.

  1306. So the

  1307. Lord Jesus

  1308. is saying,

  1309. be quick,

  1310. make this a

  1311. priority.

  1312. If you become

  1313. aware of

  1314. someone with

  1315. something against

  1316. you,

  1317. you go to

  1318. them.

  1319. Go to

  1320. them to

  1321. reconcile

  1322. with them.

  1323. Go to

  1324. them saying

  1325. things like,

  1326. I know I got

  1327. angry with you

  1328. last week and

  1329. I know that

  1330. hurt you.

  1331. Would you

  1332. please forgive

  1333. me?

  1334. Or,

  1335. it's,

  1336. did I do

  1337. something to

  1338. provoke you

  1339. to anger?

  1340. And if so,

  1341. I am so

  1342. sorry.

  1343. I want to

  1344. be at

  1345. peace with

  1346. you.

  1347. So this

  1348. morning,

  1349. let me ask

  1350. you,

  1351. as you're

  1352. here,

  1353. together,

  1354. gathered in

  1355. the worship

  1356. of God,

  1357. is there

  1358. someone God

  1359. is bringing

  1360. to your

  1361. mind that

  1362. has something

  1363. against you?

  1364. Have you

  1365. offended them

  1366. or have

  1367. they offended

  1368. you?

  1369. In Jesus'

  1370. economy,

  1371. it doesn't

  1372. matter.

  1373. Go to

  1374. them.

  1375. Make peace

  1376. with them.

  1377. Seek peace

  1378. with them.

  1379. There's another

  1380. group of people

  1381. in here.

  1382. You may have

  1383. already gone

  1384. to someone.

  1385. You already

  1386. remembered someone

  1387. who has

  1388. something against

  1389. you.

  1390. And you've

  1391. already gone

  1392. to them.

  1393. But they're

  1394. not interested

  1395. in pursuing

  1396. peace with

  1397. you.

  1398. They're not

  1399. reciprocating

  1400. that.

  1401. What does

  1402. that mean

  1403. for you

  1404. now?

  1405. Does that

  1406. mean you

  1407. cannot worship

  1408. God with

  1409. God's people?

  1410. No, it

  1411. doesn't.

  1412. Come into

  1413. the house

  1414. of the Lord.

  1415. You've done

  1416. what you can

  1417. do.

  1418. Now,

  1419. cry out to

  1420. the Lord

  1421. to bring a

  1422. fullness of

  1423. peace to

  1424. that relationship.

  1425. Wait on

  1426. the Lord.

  1427. Wait on

  1428. the Lord.

  1429. And worship

  1430. Him as

  1431. you wait.

  1432. Ask Him

  1433. to soften

  1434. hearts.

  1435. So the

  1436. first example

  1437. Jesus gives

  1438. of, hey,

  1439. you're not a

  1440. murderer,

  1441. you're a

  1442. peacemaker in

  1443. God's house,

  1444. with God's

  1445. family,

  1446. and it shows

  1447. up in how

  1448. you prioritize

  1449. it on

  1450. coming on

  1451. Sunday

  1452. morning.

  1453. The other

  1454. area that He

  1455. points to

  1456. is small

  1457. claims court.

  1458. He says,

  1459. come to

  1460. terms quickly

  1461. with your

  1462. accuser while

  1463. you're going

  1464. with him.

  1465. And then in

  1466. verse 26,

  1467. He reveals

  1468. the nature

  1469. of it.

  1470. Truly,

  1471. I say to

  1472. you,

  1473. you will

  1474. never get

  1475. out until

  1476. you have

  1477. paid the

  1478. last penny.

  1479. Money,

  1480. lending money,

  1481. borrowing money

  1482. between people

  1483. can cause

  1484. all sorts

  1485. of issues.

  1486. And what

  1487. Jesus is

  1488. saying here

  1489. is,

  1490. hey,

  1491. if you owe

  1492. somebody money

  1493. or someone

  1494. owes you

  1495. money and

  1496. it's getting

  1497. in the way

  1498. of your

  1499. relationship,

  1500. if it's going

  1501. to go to

  1502. court,

  1503. go to

  1504. them.

  1505. You initiate.

  1506. You initiate.

  1507. And you bring

  1508. peace to

  1509. that.

  1510. Come to

  1511. terms

  1512. quickly

  1513. with your

  1514. accuser.

  1515. In both of

  1516. these cases,

  1517. what we see

  1518. here is

  1519. Jesus calling

  1520. us to

  1521. a righteousness

  1522. that exceeds

  1523. that of the

  1524. Pharisees.

  1525. He calls

  1526. us to

  1527. make peace

  1528. with people

  1529. who we may

  1530. have offended

  1531. somehow.

  1532. Or they

  1533. have offended

  1534. us.

  1535. And what

  1536. Jesus is

  1537. showing us

  1538. in both of

  1539. these instances,

  1540. be quick

  1541. to peace.

  1542. It affects

  1543. your worship.

  1544. It affects

  1545. your witness.

  1546. Be quick

  1547. to peace.

  1548. This morning,

  1549. I try to

  1550. remind you

  1551. who's speaking

  1552. that this is

  1553. Jesus the

  1554. King.

  1555. He has

  1556. all authority

  1557. to clarify

  1558. what the

  1559. Sixth

  1560. Commandment

  1561. really means.

  1562. And He did

  1563. for us.

  1564. He showed

  1565. us the

  1566. true meaning

  1567. and scope

  1568. of the

  1569. Sixth

  1570. Commandment.

  1571. It extends

  1572. into our

  1573. hearts.

  1574. It extends

  1575. into our

  1576. words.

  1577. It extends

  1578. the consequence

  1579. to being

  1580. an offense

  1581. to God

  1582. Himself.

  1583. An offense

  1584. that only

  1585. Jesus can

  1586. pay on our

  1587. behalf.

  1588. He bore

  1589. God's

  1590. righteous

  1591. wrath

  1592. for your

  1593. sinful

  1594. anger.

  1595. peace.

  1596. And finally,

  1597. He calls

  1598. us to be

  1599. peacemakers.

  1600. This exceeding

  1601. righteousness

  1602. to make

  1603. peace with

  1604. those whom

  1605. we've

  1606. offended.

  1607. To initiate

  1608. peace just

  1609. as God

  1610. in Christ

  1611. initiated

  1612. peace

  1613. with us.

  1614. peace

  1615. peace

  1616. peace

  1617. peace

  1618. These words

  1619. of Jesus

  1620. show us

  1621. how

  1622. Jesus

  1623. fulfills

  1624. the law

  1625. and the

  1626. prophets

  1627. and they

  1628. show us

  1629. what a

  1630. righteousness

  1631. that exceeds

  1632. the Pharisees

  1633. looks like.

  1634. And if

  1635. you're like

  1636. me,

  1637. you hear

  1638. Jesus speak

  1639. this and

  1640. your response

  1641. is Lord

  1642. help me.

1643. Help me walk in Your ways.

  1644. Let's pray.

1645. Lord Jesus, these are searching words

1646. You speak from the sixth commandment.

1647. And they reveal our hearts for what they are.

1648. And we're amazed that God,

1649. You love us despite the murderous ways

  1650. of our hearts.

1651. Thank You for coming for us.

  1652. Thank You for becoming,

1653. taking God's wrath for our sin.

1654. God, would You make us peacemakers?

1655. Would You use Your Word here

1656. to spur us on to be at peace

  1657. with brothers and sisters

  1658. and even with debtors?

  1659. God, make us light.

  1660. God, make us salt

1661. in a decaying and dark world.

  1662. In Jesus' name,

  1663. Amen.
