  1. Well, we have an epidemic plaguing the American evangelical church.

  2. I'm not sure if you're too familiar with the statistics regarding pornography among brothers

  3. and sisters in the evangelical church, but it is wreaking havoc.

  4. Some statistics say that 80% of Christian men regularly dabble in pornography.

  5. That 50% of Christian men are actually addicted to sexual sin.

  6. 20% of Christian women are struggling with pornography.

  7. 64% of Christian families have an acute porn problem in their home.

  8. And 40% of Christian pastors regularly consume pornography.

  9. If these are true, we've got a problem.

  10. I was recently at a pastor's conference, and we get this alarming statistic that of those

  11. pastors staying in hotels, there was this amazing renting of explicit sexual videos among these

  12. men.

  13. Do you know why pornography is such a problem?

  14. It's true, pornography is widespread.

  15. It is easily available.

  16. You just have to click, and it's there.

  17. The real reason why pornography is causing such a problem within the church is this.

  18. We have an appetite for it.

  19. There's something within us that craves pornography.

  20. That craves what God forbids sexually.

  21. There's a reason why pornography is so prolific.

  22. It's because within the human heart, there is a radical problem.

  23. Sexual lust is deeply entrenched in the human heart.

  24. And what Jesus will tell us this morning is, a radical problem requires radical action.

  25. Brothers and sisters, if it's not pornography, it's something else sexually that you may be

  26. experiencing the devastating effects of.

  27. But praise be to God, He addresses this.

  28. He has grace for you.

  29. He's not intimidated by this.

  30. In fact, He wants to deliver.

  31. He wants to transform.

  32. And so let's turn back to Matthew 5, verses 27-30.

    Matthew 5:27–30

  33. And I'd just like to read through this passage one more time.

  34. You've heard that it was said, you shall not commit adultery.

  35. Remember, this is Jesus at His inaugural address.

  36. You've heard that it was said, you shall not commit adultery.

  37. But I say, I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  38. But if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.

  39. For it is better that you lose one of your members than your whole body be thrown into hell.

  40. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.

  41. For it's better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

  42. This morning, what Jesus is telling us, if I just sum it up in one sentence, it would be this.

  43. Our sexual lust, your sexual lust, my sexual lust is a radical problem requiring radical action.

  44. And if what Jesus is saying is true,

  45. then the majority of us in this room are adulterers at heart.

  46. He gets right at it.

  47. This morning, I want to make four points.

  48. The first point and the fourth point are pastoral.

  49. It's my love for you.

  50. And then the second point and the third point are right from the text.

  51. So the first point is this.

  52. I want to give you kind of a big sweep of your Bible to kind of frame our sexual desires.

  53. And then we'll go right to the text and see what Jesus has to say.

  54. And he says, sexual lust is a radical problem.

  55. That's the second point.

  56. The third point is sexual lust requires radical action.

  57. And then the fourth point is,

  58. I'm going to make a plea this morning.

  59. A pastoral plea to you.

  60. So let's dig into this first point.

  61. It's pastoral in nature.

  62. It's the big sweep of Scripture.

  63. I want you to know that your sexuality is good.

  64. God created sexuality as a good gift.

  65. And for us to see that,

  66. you've got to go way back to Genesis 1.

  67. If you turn back on your Bibles,

  68. Genesis 1,

  69. we read this in verse 26 and 27.

  70. Then God said, let us make man in our own image.

  71. And then down to 27.

  72. So God created man in his own image.

  73. In the image of God, he created him.

  74. Male and female, he created them.

  75. And God blessed them.

  76. And God said to them,

  77. be fruitful and multiply.

  78. Fill the earth and subdue it.

  79. And so, when we do this sweep of the Bible,

  80. I want to show you three things.

  81. God created your sexuality.

  82. Sin distorts your sexuality.

  83. But Christ came to redeem your sexuality.

  84. So God created it.

  85. In Genesis 1.27, we read that God made male and female in his own image.

  86. And then he tells Adam and Eve to go, be fruitful and multiply.

  87. You've got to realize,

  88. God didn't make a mistake in the formation of the male body in the female body.

  89. God designed our bodies the way they are,

  90. both male and female.

  91. And what I just want to make explicit is,

  92. God formed us male and female.

  93. And he doesn't value one over the other.

  94. He doesn't think that the male body is better than the female body.

  95. The female body is better than the male body.

  96. Both male and female were created in the image of God.

  97. Therefore, we have equal value in God's eyes.

  98. But as we all know,

  99. there are some major differences between men and women.

  100. And in this point,

  101. I just want to show you that our bodies,

  102. the male body and the female body,

  103. are intentionally designed,

  104. and God created us as sexual beings.

  105. It's not a mistake.

  106. He designed us this way.

  107. And that we're both image bearers of God.

  108. And so by the end of the sixth day,

  109. God looks at Adam and Eve,

  110. what He's created.

  111. Do you remember what He says?

  112. That's good!

  113. He's not embarrassed by our sexuality.

  114. He designed our sexuality.

  115. It's a gift to us all.

  116. And later in Genesis 2,

  117. God provides the only context

  118. for human beings to enjoy sexual fulfillment,

  119. and it is called marriage.

  120. Remember Genesis 2?

  121. God says to Adam,

  122. it's not good to be alone.

  123. He puts him in a deep sea,

  124. pulls out a rib,

  125. forms Eve,

  126. and then in the first wedding ceremony,

  127. God brings Eve to Adam,

  128. and He hands her over to him.

  129. It's like a dad walking a bride

  130. down this aisle to the groom,

  131. and God hands this bride over to Adam,

  132. the first groom,

  133. and He says,

  134. she's yours.

  135. You enjoy.

  136. And it's in Genesis 1,

    Genesis 1:24

  137. verses 24,

  138. that we read the institution of marriage.

  139. Chapter 2, verse 24.

  140. Adam receives the woman from God,

  141. and God flips around,

  142. and He's the first pastor,

  143. marrying the first couple.

  144. And He's saying,

  145. what I have joined together,

  146. let not man separate.

  147. This is good.

  148. And so we read in 2.24,

  149. therefore man shall leave his father

  150. and his mother,

  151. and hold fast to his wife,

  152. and they shall become one flesh.

  153. God has given humankind

  154. the institution of marriage

  155. as the exclusive place

  156. to enjoy sexual fulfillment.

  157. And just to clarify what marriage is,

  158. we need to be circling back

  159. to this regularly in our culture.

  160. Biblically speaking,

  161. marriage is an exclusive,

  162. lifelong union

  163. between one man and one woman

  164. for life.

  165. And it's all before God.

  166. An exclusive union

  167. between one man and one woman

  168. for life

  169. before God.

  170. And it's in that context of marriage,

  171. in that relationship alone,

  172. God says,

  173. enjoy this good gift

  174. I've given you

  175. called sexuality.

  176. What I want you to see

  177. from Genesis 1 and 2

  178. is that from the beginning,

  179. God designed sexuality

  180. to be something to enjoy

  181. and something that served

  182. a wonderful purpose,

  183. and God said it was good.

  184. And He provided marriage

  185. to enjoy it.

  186. But we're all wondering

  187. what went wrong.

  188. What happened?

  189. Why is there pornography?

  190. Why is there sexual exploitation

  191. of various kinds?

  192. Why is there rape?

  193. What went wrong?

  194. Well, God created sexuality,

  195. but sin distorted our sexuality.

  196. When Adam and Eve sinned,

  197. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  198. they ushered into the human experience

  199. sin.

  200. And it infiltrated every aspect

  201. of the human experience.

  202. It didn't make us as bad

  203. as we possibly can be,

  204. but it affected everything

  205. that we do

  206. and everything that we think,

  207. including our sexuality.

  208. So here's what happens.

  209. When someone, a sinner,

  210. rejects God,

  211. they're going to want

  212. to live for something.

  213. And oftentimes what happens

  214. is this good thing called sex

  215. takes the place of God

  216. in somebody's life.

  217. And so in Romans 1, verse 24,

    Romans 1:24

  218. when God hands people over

  219. to the desires of their flesh,

  220. that's what happens.

  221. God is rejected.

  222. Something else will be worshipped.

  223. And something that is enjoyable

  224. is often worshipped.

  225. And so you see this distortion

  226. of God's good gift

  227. that sin brings about

  228. on our sexuality.

  229. This is why there are things

  230. like pornography.

  231. This is why there are

  232. this deep lust in our hearts

  233. to want things that are forbidden

  234. by us, by God for us.

  235. Sin is in our experience.

  236. It's ushered in.

  237. This is why we have to fight.

  238. That's not the end of the story,

  239. biblically speaking.

  240. God created our sexuality.

  241. Sin distorts our sexuality

  242. with devastating effects.

  243. But Christ came to redeem it.

  244. Jesus came not only to forgive

  245. the penalty of our sin,

  246. but to rescue sinners

  247. from the power of sin.

  248. To transform them.

  249. To transform a sexuality

  250. that was lived for sin

  251. and now to exercise a sexuality

  252. lived for the glory of God.

  253. If you want a really good place

  254. in your Bible to go,

  255. Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  256. is a wonderful treatment

  257. of how we are to fight sin now

  258. as believers.

  259. But what I want to do

  260. just with this little step

  261. is to help you to think

  262. about your sexuality.

  263. As a Christian,

  264. your sexuality is a good gift from God,

  265. but your sin distorts it.

  266. But your Savior is looking to redeem it.

  267. And so every Christian in the room,

  268. you can count on it,

  269. God is looking to sanctify your sexuality.

  270. He wants to make you more and more holy

  271. in your sexuality.

  272. And as you get more and more holy

  273. in your sexuality,

  274. there's more and more joy.

  275. You experience God's goodness

  276. in greater and greater measure.

  277. So that is the first point

  278. I wanted to make.

  279. The big sweep.

  280. Your sexuality is made by God,

  281. distorted by sin,

  282. and being redeemed by Jesus.

  283. But now,

  284. let's hear what Jesus has to say

  285. about sexual lust.

  286. Would you look at

  287. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5:27–28

  288. verses 27 through 28.

  289. You've heard that it was said,

  290. you shall not commit adultery.

  291. But I say to you

  292. that everyone who looks at a woman

  293. with lustful intent

  294. has already committed adultery

  295. with her in his heart.

  296. He's preaching the Sermon on the Mount.

  297. This is his inaugural address.

  298. And if you remember,

  299. chapter 5, verse 17

  300. is the main point of the sermon.

  301. And he's saying,

  302. I came not to abolish the law

  303. and the prophets,

  304. but to fulfill them.

  305. The Old Testament's about me.

  306. And I came to make sense of it all.

  307. And he goes on to say

  308. in chapter 5, verse 20,

  309. he calls his followers

  310. to live a righteousness

  311. that exceeds that of the scribes

  312. and Pharisees.

  313. And what follows

  314. is what that looks like.

  315. What that looks like

  316. when it comes to murder.

  317. And this morning,

  318. what that looks like

  319. when it comes to adultery.

  320. And so last week,

  321. he talked about

  322. the sixth commandment.

  323. This week,

  324. he's addressing

  325. the seventh commandment.

  326. And the seventh commandment is,

  327. you shall not commit adultery.

  328. And Jesus,

  329. as in his messianic role,

  330. is saying this to us,

  331. let me clarify for you

  332. this adultery thing.

  333. What we're going to see here

  334. is that Jesus

  335. is going to say

  336. that the seventh commandment

  337. not only forbids

  338. the physical act of adultery,

  339. but it forbids

  340. the sexual lust

  341. at the root of adultery.

  342. The seventh commandment

  343. addresses the radical problem

  344. of sexual lust.

  345. And so we see that

  346. in verses 27 and 28.

  347. Jesus making a huge clarification.

  348. Jesus even correcting

  349. the teachers of the day.

  350. The Jewish teachers of the day

  351. were limiting the scope

  352. of the seventh commandment

  353. to just the physical act of adultery.

  354. It was what they were doing

  355. with murder as well,

  356. just limiting it

  357. to the shedding of blood.

  358. And Jesus came to knock

  359. down the walls

  360. that were built up

  361. around that commandment.

  362. And so what Jesus says here,

  363. he's not denying

  364. the sinfulness

  365. of the physical act

  366. of adultery.

  367. That's wrong.

  368. And by the way,

  369. what makes adultery,

  370. the sinful act,

  371. the physical act sinful,

  372. is that it breaks

  373. the marriage covenant

  374. between a man and a woman.

  375. It breaks that exclusive

  376. lifelong union

  377. between one man

  378. and one woman.

  379. So when a husband

  380. seeks sexual gratification

  381. with someone other

  382. than his wife,

  383. he separates

  384. what God has joined together.

  385. He breaks the exclusive union

  386. between one man

  387. and one woman

  388. before God.

  389. And so Jesus isn't denying

  390. the seriousness

  391. of the physical act.

  392. He's actually upholding that.

  393. What he's doing is

  394. he's taking his 10-pound

  395. messianic sledgehammer

  396. and he's smashing down the walls

  397. people build up around it

  398. to say this only applies

  399. to the physical act of adultery.

  400. He's saying no, it doesn't.

  401. The seventh commandment

  402. gets at the root cause

  403. of adultery.

  404. It's much,

  405. it goes much deeper.

  406. But I say,

  407. whoever looks at a woman

  408. with lustful intent

  409. has committed adultery

  410. with her in his heart.

  411. Jesus is shining

  412. the piercing light

  413. of the seventh commandment

  414. into the deep depths

  415. of our hearts,

  416. even into our imaginations.

  417. So if you're following Jesus here,

  418. what he's doing is this.

  419. He's locating

  420. the root cause

  421. of adultery

  422. not outside of us,

  423. but inside of us.

  424. He's exposing

  425. our sexually explicit

  426. and sinful thoughts.

  427. He's exposing

  428. our imaginations.

  429. When Jesus says,

  430. whoever looks at a woman

  431. with lustful intent,

  432. he's locating sin

  433. within us,

  434. in our desires.

  435. in our hearts.

  436. Now remember,

  437. a Jew living

  438. in the ancient Near East

  439. thought of one's heart

  440. as the seat

  441. of your emotions

  442. and your thinking

  443. and your will.

  444. It was the control center

  445. of your life.

  446. And so for Jesus

  447. to say these words,

  448. the heart includes

  449. your imagination.

  450. We tend to think

  451. of our imagination

  452. between our ears.

  453. Jesus would locate it

  454. in the heart.

  455. So the lustful intent

  456. that Jesus is talking about

  457. is an outworking

  458. of your heart.

  459. It includes

  460. your imagination.

  461. The lustful intent

  462. Jesus is speaking of

  463. is sexual lust.

  464. And when you sexually lust

  465. after someone

  466. not your spouse,

  467. you commit adultery

  468. with your imagination

  469. in your heart.

  470. Years ago,

  471. I gave a talk

  472. on this subject

  473. at a church.

  474. And after the service,

  475. I had a man

  476. in his mid-80s

  477. come up to me.

  478. And he was unable

  479. to physically enjoy

  480. sex with his wife.

  481. But he came up to me

  482. and he said,

  483. do you know what

  484. the most powerful

  485. sexual organ

  486. of the human being is?

  487. And I was like,

  488. what?

  489. He said,

  490. the imagination.

  491. Your heart.

  492. Your heart.

  493. Let me make a couple

  494. clarifications.

  495. Sexual lust

  496. is not simply

  497. attraction,

  498. being attracted

  499. to someone.

  500. It's very possible

  501. to be attracted

  502. to someone else

  503. without lusting

  504. after them.

  505. That's not what

  506. Jesus is talking about.

  507. Another clarification

  508. is this,

  509. and this is something

  510. you've got to cut

  511. finally.

  512. Sexual lust

  513. is not

  514. the temptation

  515. to lust.

  516. Let me talk about it

  517. in terms of

  518. taking a second look.

  519. Have you ever been

  520. somewhere

  521. and someone

  522. catches your eye

  523. and you're kind of like,

  524. if I look again,

  525. it's not going to go well.

  526. And so,

  527. you're being tempted

  528. to take a second look

  529. and you're being

  530. tempted to engage

  531. someone with

  532. your imagination

  533. and bring them

  534. to yourself sexually.

  535. You know what I'm

  536. talking about?

  537. Taking the second look?

  538. There is a difference

  539. between being

  540. tempted

  541. to take a second look.

  542. That's not lust.

  543. And then actually

  544. taking the second look.

  545. That is lust.

  546. You see the difference?

  547. Sexual lust

  548. is conceived

  549. in your heart

  550. when you

  551. yield your

  552. imagination

  553. over to

  554. gratify

  555. your sinful

  556. sexual desires.

  557. That's when

  558. lust takes place.

  559. And if you're like me,

  560. you're thinking,

  561. that happens

  562. much more

  563. than I care to admit.

  564. So Jesus is saying

  565. that if there's a guy

  566. who takes a second look

  567. because he wants

  568. to sexually engage

  569. a woman with his

  570. imagination,

  571. that guy has just

  572. committed adultery

  573. in his heart

  574. and he may be

  575. on the highway.

  576. He may be walking

  577. out of Menards.

  578. He may be walking

  579. with his wife

  580. into a restaurant.

  581. It takes place

  582. in the heart.

  583. Are you

  584. picking up

  585. on the radical

  586. nature

  587. of what Jesus

  588. is saying?

  589. Are you feeling

  590. this?

  591. The word radical

  592. comes from a Latin

  593. word which literally

  594. means

  595. the root

  596. of something.

  597. The root cause,

  598. the essential

  599. nature of something.

  600. And what Jesus

  601. is saying here

  602. is that

  603. the essential

  604. nature of adultery

  605. is sexual lust

  606. which resides

  607. in the heart

  608. of men and women.

  609. Your imagination

  610. generates

  611. your imagination.

  612. You need

  613. to be careful

  614. of what you set

  615. your imagination on.

  616. Because not only

  617. are you aware

  618. of your imagination,

  619. your God

  620. is aware

  621. of your imagination.

  622. So let me

  623. say it this way.

  624. Proverbs 5.21

  625. For a man's

  626. ways

  627. are before

  628. the eyes

  629. of the Lord.

  630. For a man's

  631. ways

  632. both externally

  633. and internally

  634. are before

  635. the eyes

  636. of the Lord.

  637. God

  638. sees

  639. everything.

  640. So think about

  641. it this way.

  642. At this moment,

  643. our God

  644. is completely

  645. aware of

  646. every thought

  647. of every heart

  648. of the 7.4

  649. billion people

  650. on the planet

  651. right now.

  652. He doesn't have

  653. a hard time

  654. processing things.

  655. He's fully aware

  656. of it.

  657. He's fully cognizant

  658. of it

  659. right now.

  660. He knows

  661. the thoughts

  662. of your heart.

  663. And so what Jesus

  664. is doing,

  665. he's making

  666. an extraordinary

  667. claim.

  668. He's saying

  669. even

  670. your thoughts

  671. you will be

  672. held accountable

  673. for

  674. before God.

  675. Your imagination

  676. will be held

  677. accountable

  678. on that day.

  679. He knows

  680. the ways

  681. of your heart.

  682. But here's

  683. the good news.

  684. He's in it

  685. to purify

  686. your heart.

  687. Blessed are

  688. the pure

  689. of heart.

  690. He wants

  691. to purify

  692. your heart.

  693. And so

  694. far

  695. we just

  696. looked at

  697. sexual

  698. lust

  699. as a

  700. radical

  701. problem.

  702. It's deep

  703. within you.

  704. Jesus is

  705. exploring

  706. our

  707. imaginations.

  708. But now

  709. let's turn

  710. to verses

  711. 29 and 30

  712. where we

  713. see

  714. sexual

  715. lust

  716. requires

  717. radical

  718. action.

  719. It's a

  720. radical

  721. problem

  722. and it

  723. requires

  724. radical

  725. action.

  726. Look at

  727. verses 29

  728. and 30.

  729. If your

  730. right eye

  731. causes you

  732. to sin

  733. tear it

  734. out and

  735. throw it

  736. away.

  737. That's

  738. pretty

  739. extreme

  740. don't

  741. you

  742. think?

  743. Look at

  744. verse 30.

  745. And if

  746. your right

  747. hand

  748. causes you

  749. to sin

  750. cut it

  751. off and

  752. throw it

  753. away.

  754. That's

  755. pretty

  756. extreme

  757. don't

  758. you

  759. think?

  760. Is

  761. Jesus

  762. actually

  763. calling

  764. his

  765. followers

  766. to

  767. self

  768. mutilation?

  769. No.

  770. But he

  771. is using

  772. extreme

  773. language

  774. to make

  775. a really

  776. important

  777. point.

  778. And we

  779. cannot

  780. miss

  781. that

  782. important

  783. point.

  784. And so

  785. what Jesus

  786. is using

  787. with this

  788. very extreme

  789. language,

  790. these radical

  791. commands,

  792. is that he's

  793. saying do

  794. whatever you

  795. got to do

  796. in order to

  797. deny sexual

  798. lust from

  799. taking root

  800. in your heart.

  801. Do whatever

  802. you have to

  803. do.

  804. And so that's

  805. the cut off

  806. language.

  807. That's the

  808. gouted out

  809. language.

  810. That's the

  811. throw away

  812. language.

  813. Do whatever

  814. you need

  815. to do

  816. to keep

  817. your heart

  818. from

  819. sexually

  820. lusting.

  821. From

  822. breaking the

  823. seventh

  824. commandment.

  825. This is

  826. radical

  827. and extreme.

  828. The key

  829. phrase here

  830. is

  831. cause you

  832. to sin.

  833. You see

  834. that in

  835. verse 29?

  836. If your

  837. right eye

  838. causes you

  839. to sin.

  840. Verse 30,

  841. and if your

  842. right hand

  843. causes you

  844. to sin.

  845. That word

  846. cause you

  847. to sin.

  848. We get the

  849. word scandal

  850. from that

  851. word.

  852. Scandalized.

  853. Scandalous.

  854. And its

  855. original meaning

  856. was a

  857. trigger to

  858. a trap.

  859. That's what

  860. a scandal

  861. was.

  862. The trigger

  863. of a trap.

  864. And so what

  865. Jesus is saying

  866. here is don't

  867. let your

  868. right eye

  869. trigger the

  870. trap of lust

  871. in your

  872. heart.

  873. Don't let

  874. your right

  875. hand trigger

  876. the trap of

  877. lust in your

  878. heart.

  879. Do whatever

  880. you need to

  881. do to keep

  882. that from

  883. happening.

  884. The extreme

  885. problem requires

  886. extreme action.

  887. Jesus is

  888. saying don't

  889. look at or

  890. touch what

  891. will cause you

  892. to sin in

  893. your heart.

  894. In fact,

  895. you've got to

  896. get rid of

  897. it.

  898. He's soberly

  899. recognizing how

  900. our eyes and

  901. our hands can

  902. provide opportunities

  903. for our hearts

  904. to lust.

  905. lust.

  906. So let me

  907. give you some

  908. examples.

  909. Let me help

  910. start you

  911. think, okay,

  912. where this

  913. might show up

  914. in your life.

  915. And I'm

  916. going to ask

  917. you to a

  918. humble honesty

  919. right now.

  920. Be as

  921. honest with

  922. yourself as

  923. you can.

  924. Because that

  925. is a poverty

  926. of spirit.

  927. It will result

  928. in you mourning,

  929. but you will

  930. be comforted.

  931. Have you

  932. ever

  933. thumbed

  934. through and

  935. looked at a

  936. magazine or

  937. a book that

  938. is sexually

  939. explicit, that

  940. turns your

  941. heart to

  942. lust?

  943. What Jesus

  944. is saying is

  945. get rid of

  946. it.

  947. Don't put

  948. your hand on

  949. it.

  950. Don't put

  951. your eyes on

  952. it.

  953. Get rid

  954. of it.

  955. Are you

  956. pressing the

  957. remote control

  958. to go to

  959. channels to

  960. set your eyes

  961. on things that

  962. God forbids

  963. and will just

  964. entice you to

  965. lust sexually

  966. in your heart?

  967. What are you

  968. watching on

  969. demand?

  970. What are you

  971. watching on

  972. Netflix?

  973. You got cable?

  974. What are you

  975. doing?

  976. Where are you

  977. going?

  978. Get rid of

  979. it.

  980. If it's

  981. causing you

  982. to stumble,

  983. get rid of

  984. it.

  985. That's what

  986. Jesus is

  987. saying.

  988. Are you

  989. clicking on

  990. websites or

  991. apps that

  992. are pornographic

  993. in nature or

  994. that tempt you

  995. to lust?

  996. You know, it

  997. might not be

  998. explicitly

  999. pornographic,

  1000. but you're

  1001. there and

  1002. when you're

  1003. there, it

  1004. stirs lust in

  1005. your heart.

  1006. Get rid of

  1007. it.

  1008. Be honest.

  1009. Get rid of

  1010. it.

  1011. What Jesus

  1012. is getting at

  1013. is this whole

  1014. idea of

  1015. starving out

  1016. sin from

  1017. your life.

  1018. Don't feed

  1019. it.

  1020. Don't give

  1021. it an

  1022. opportunity to

  1023. flourish.

  1024. Don't fuel

  1025. it.

  1026. Starve it.

  1027. And so if

  1028. these are

  1029. areas or

  1030. other areas

  1031. that you

  1032. know of,

  1033. you're going

  1034. to with

  1035. your eyes

  1036. in your

  1037. hand and

  1038. are fueling

  1039. lust,

  1040. get rid of

  1041. it.

  1042. This is

  1043. the radical

  1044. repentance

  1045. Jesus is

  1046. calling his

  1047. citizens to.

  1048. So starve

  1049. it out.

  1050. But there's

  1051. another thing,

  1052. another radical

  1053. act that I

  1054. want to point

  1055. you to right

  1056. now that has

  1057. another effect.

  1058. There's one

  1059. thing to

  1060. starve sin

  1061. out.

  1062. There's

  1063. another thing

  1064. to crowd

  1065. sin out

  1066. because your

  1067. heart is

  1068. delighting in

  1069. something wonderful.

  1070. And when you

  1071. delight in

  1072. something wonderful,

  1073. you start to

  1074. limit the

  1075. space for

  1076. lust to

  1077. take root.

  1078. And so in

  1079. order to help

  1080. you not only

  1081. starve sin

  1082. out, but to

  1083. crowd sin

  1084. out, I want

  1085. to point you

  1086. to another

  1087. radical action

  1088. that was done

  1089. for you.

  1090. If you think

  1091. gouging out

  1092. your eye or

  1093. cutting off

  1094. your hand is

  1095. extreme, how

  1096. about this for

  1097. extreme?

  1098. How about this

  1099. for radical?

  1100. The sinless

  1101. son of God

  1102. going to the

  1103. cross to bear

  1104. the penalty and

  1105. power of your

  1106. sin.

  1107. How's that for

  1108. extreme?

  1109. How's that for

  1110. radical?

  1111. That the

  1112. holy God of

  1113. the universe

  1114. would take on

  1115. human flesh and

  1116. die in your

  1117. place to set

  1118. you free.

  1119. That is an

  1120. extreme radical

  1121. kind of love.

  1122. In fact, that

  1123. is a radical

  1124. power unleashed

  1125. for people.

  1126. You may have

  1127. been sitting

  1128. here for the

  1129. last 30

  1130. minutes thinking,

  1131. Jesus, if

  1132. this is true,

  1133. if this is true,

  1134. what you're saying

  1135. about the nature

  1136. of sinful lust,

  1137. if this is true,

  1138. I'm undone.

  1139. I'm shown to be

  1140. what I am.

  1141. I'm an adulterer

  1142. at heart.

  1143. If that's you,

  1144. if you're

  1145. realizing this,

  1146. that even your

  1147. imagination

  1148. condemns you,

  1149. you need to hear

  1150. this.

  1151. Jesus died

  1152. for you.

  1153. Jesus went to

  1154. the cross and

  1155. he suffered all

  1156. of God's wrath

  1157. for all of your

  1158. sexual sin.

  1159. All of it.

  1160. And then he was

  1161. raised from the

  1162. dead to give you

  1163. the power to

  1164. overcome sexual

  1165. sin in your

  1166. life.

  1167. That is a

  1168. radical love

  1169. and it's a

  1170. radical power

  1171. unleashed by the

  1172. living God at

  1173. the cross.

  1174. His extreme

  1175. act of grace

  1176. on your behalf

  1177. enables you

  1178. to live

  1179. an extreme

  1180. life for

  1181. his namesake

  1182. regarding your

  1183. sexuality.

  1184. So in light of

  1185. this extreme

  1186. grace,

  1187. God has shown

  1188. us in Christ,

  1189. when you think

  1190. about giving up

  1191. cable or Netflix

  1192. or romantic novels

  1193. or seductive

  1194. clothing,

  1195. you start realizing

  1196. that's nothing.

  1197. If this means

  1198. walking in holiness

  1199. with Jesus,

  1200. getting rid of

  1201. that stuff is

  1202. nothing.

  1203. Get rid of it

  1204. and experience

  1205. the sweetness

  1206. and joy of

  1207. walking with

  1208. your Savior.

  1209. So we've

  1210. looked at the

  1211. problem,

  1212. the radical

  1213. problem,

  1214. we've looked at

  1215. the radical

  1216. action that we

  1217. must take but

  1218. what our God

  1219. took on our

  1220. behalf,

  1221. and now a

  1222. pastoral plea.

  1223. I know you're

  1224. out there.

  1225. I know you're

  1226. out there.

  1227. I know you're

  1228. out there

  1229. struggling with

  1230. sin,

  1231. struggling with

  1232. lust.

  1233. I know.

  1234. I know you

  1235. are feeling

  1236. distant from

  1237. your God.

  1238. That's the

  1239. fallout of

  1240. this kind of

  1241. sin.

  1242. I know that

  1243. you're afraid

  1244. of your spouse,

  1245. that you don't

  1246. know what to

  1247. say, that you

  1248. fear the worst.

  1249. I know.

  1250. I know that

  1251. if you have

  1252. children,

  1253. that this

  1254. area of

  1255. sexual sin

  1256. in your

  1257. life just

  1258. deflates you.

  1259. It limits

  1260. your influence

  1261. in your home.

  1262. You're like a

  1263. dog walking

  1264. around with a

  1265. tail between

  1266. your legs,

  1267. or you're

  1268. just grouchy

  1269. all the time.

  1270. I know.

  1271. And I also

  1272. know this,

  1273. that you tend

  1274. to live on the

  1275. periphery of the

  1276. church,

  1277. that you tend

  1278. to not get

  1279. involved because

  1280. you don't want

  1281. to be fully

  1282. known.

  1283. I also know

  1284. this, you're

  1285. miserable.

  1286. You're isolated.

  1287. You're ashamed.

  1288. And here's the

  1289. nub of it.

  1290. You're afraid.

  1291. You're afraid

  1292. that if people

  1293. find out who

  1294. you really are

  1295. and what you've

  1296. really been doing,

  1297. you're going to

  1298. be shunned.

  1299. You're going to

  1300. be cast out.

  1301. You don't think

  1302. that people will

  1303. love you and

  1304. accept you if

  1305. they know the

  1306. full truth about

  1307. you.

  1308. It's not true.

  1309. God doesn't

  1310. love us this

  1311. way.

  1312. And God

  1313. calls us,

  1314. His followers,

  1315. to love each

  1316. other with the

  1317. same extreme

  1318. kind of love.

  1319. love.

  1320. We've been

  1321. talking as

  1322. elders about

  1323. this for the

  1324. last couple

  1325. days.

  1326. And I just

  1327. want to let

  1328. you guys,

  1329. everyone know

  1330. on behalf of

  1331. them,

  1332. there are no

  1333. stones to be

  1334. thrown.

  1335. We want

  1336. those struggling

  1337. with sexual

  1338. sin to be

  1339. released from

  1340. their sexual

  1341. sin.

  1342. To find

  1343. freedom in

  1344. Christ.

  1345. Christ.

  1346. So if

  1347. you're feeling

  1348. isolated because

  1349. of your sexual

  1350. sin, if

  1351. you're hiding

  1352. because of

  1353. your sexual

  1354. sin, if

  1355. you've been

  1356. living in the

  1357. shadows because

  1358. of your sexual

  1359. sin, if

  1360. you've just

  1361. grown to

  1362. live with the

  1363. fear of being

  1364. found out

  1365. because of

  1366. your sexual

  1367. sin, think

  1368. about it this

  1369. way.

  1370. Jesus is

  1371. calling you

  1372. today to

  1373. say, come

  1374. into the

  1375. light.

  1376. Come out of

  1377. the darkness.

  1378. Come out of

  1379. the shadows.

  1380. come into

  1381. the light.

  1382. Let me

  1383. free you.

  1384. Let me

  1385. deliver you.

  1386. Come, be

  1387. honest and

  1388. find and be

  1389. met with

  1390. grace and

  1391. kindness.

  1392. There's a

  1393. proverb that

  1394. has served me

  1395. so well.

  1396. Proverbs 28,

  1397. 13 says,

  1398. whoever conceals

  1399. his transgressions

  1400. will not

  1401. prosper, but

  1402. he who

  1403. confesses and

  1404. forsakes them

  1405. will obtain

  1406. mercy.

  1407. Brother or

  1408. sister, if

  1409. you have

  1410. been hiding

  1411. because of

  1412. sexual sin in

  1413. the darkness,

  1414. come into

  1415. the light

  1416. and find

  1417. mercy.

  1418. We're going

  1419. to close

  1420. this morning

  1421. by singing

  1422. two songs.

  1423. And during

  1424. these two

  1425. songs, I'm

  1426. going to ask

  1427. the elders to

  1428. come forward.

  1429. Dave Barnard

  1430. is out of

  1431. town.

  1432. He and

  1433. Leslie are

  1434. out of

  1435. town.

  1436. But I'm

  1437. going to

  1438. invite Lou

  1439. and Bev

  1440. as well as

  1441. Rick and

  1442. Jasmine to

  1443. come on

  1444. down.

  1445. Jenny and me

  1446. will be down

  1447. here.

  1448. Matt Sear and

  1449. his wife

  1450. Elise will be

  1451. down here.

  1452. Billy and I

  1453. and Jess will

  1454. be down here.

  1455. And we're here to

  1456. pray.

  1457. We're here to

  1458. welcome you.

  1459. And so as we're

  1460. singing, if you

  1461. are feeling God's

  1462. convicting work in

  1463. your life, that's

  1464. good.

  1465. So come on down.

  1466. We'll pray with

  1467. you.

  1468. We're here to

  1469. help you.

  1470. But I also know

  1471. this.

  1472. If there's just too

  1473. many eyes this

  1474. morning, if it's

  1475. too much for you

  1476. this morning, email

  1477. me.

  1478. Andy, do we

  1479. have my email

  1480. set up?

  1481. This is my email

  1482. address.

  1483. Email me.

  1484. Take the first

  1485. radical step by

  1486. emailing me and

  1487. put on the subject

  1488. line, help.

  1489. I'm ashamed.

  1490. I'm sick of this.

1491. I want to walk in

  1492. the light.

  1493. We're going to

  1494. meet you with

  1495. help.

  1496. We're going to

  1497. meet you with

  1498. love.

  1499. We'll walk through

  1500. whatever we need to

  1501. walk through

  1502. together.

1503. But I just want to

  1504. make sure you know

  1505. we love you.

  1506. We are glad you're

  1507. here.

  1508. We want to help.

  1509. So let me just

  1510. close by saying

  1511. this.

  1512. I'm going to

  1513. invite Matt and

  1514. the worship team

  1515. to come on up.

  1516. There's just too

  1517. much at stake.

  1518. There's just too

  1519. much at stake.

  1520. Brother or sister,

  1521. don't stay in the

  1522. shadows.

  1523. Come out into the

  1524. light.

  1525. We're here to help.

  1526. God's grace is all

  1527. powerful.

  1528. Let me pray.

  1529. God in heaven,

  1530. would you set the

  1531. prisoners free?

  1532. Whether it's right

  1533. now or throughout

  1534. this week or for

  1535. the months to come,

  1536. God, would you

  1537. unshackle men and

  1538. women shackled by

  1539. the sin of lust?

  1540. God, would you

  1541. free our brothers

  1542. and sisters who are

  1543. ensnared by

  1544. pornography?

  1545. God, would you

  1546. make a salt and

  1547. light in this city?

  1548. And would you

  1549. sanctify us so

  1550. that we are more

  1551. salty and shine

  1552. more bright?

  1553. In Jesus' name,

  1554. Amen.
