  1. If you would turn in your Bibles to Matthew 5, we're in the Sermon on the Mount, which

  2. remember is the inaugural address of King Jesus.

  3. And he tackles the very controversial subject of divorce this morning.

  4. So would you open to Matthew 5, 31 and 32, and let me read.

  5. It was also said, whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.

  6. But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality,

  7. makes her commit adultery.

  8. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

  9. If this morning you've come into this building wondering if you should divorce your spouse,

  10. I'm glad that you're here.

  11. You need to hear what Jesus has to say this morning.

  12. If you've come into this building this morning, and when you hear the word divorce for only

  13. the grounds of sexual immorality, and you realize that you've divorced for something other than that,

  14. and then remarried, you may be coming here, and you've got this huge lump in your throat.

  15. Your heart's dropping.

  16. You need to hear what Jesus is saying here.

  17. If you're single, and you're thinking about getting married, hoping to get married,

  18. you need to hear what Jesus is saying here.

  19. Because Jesus is talking about marriage in a way that we don't hear in our culture.

  20. He's got something to say about marriage, and He's got something to say about divorce.

  21. And so this morning, Jesus is speaking to us, and He's saying, let me clarify this divorce thing.

  22. What we're going to see this morning is that marriage is an exclusive, lifelong, one-flesh union

  23. between one man and one woman joined together by God Himself.

  24. Marriage is sacred.

  25. Marriage is sacred.

  26. The way I want to help you see this this morning is by introducing you to a debate that was taking place in first century Palestine.

  27. It gives some backdrop to the situation historically that Jesus was speaking into.

  28. And so, I want to help you to understand the debate.

  29. We're going to go way back to Deuteronomy 24 to help you see that.

  30. And then, I want to help you see where the Pharisees came down, these teachers of the law in Jesus' day,

  31. where they came down on this very debate.

  32. And so, in order to help you see that, we're going to go to Matthew 19, 3-9.

  33. And then, we're going to bring it all together back in Matthew 5.

  34. And we're going to learn what Jesus has to say about all things.

  35. We're going to spend a lot of time in Matthew 19 this morning.

  36. I'll explain why in a little bit.

  37. But Jesus puts on a clinic.

  38. He has something to say about marriage, and He's got something to say about divorce.

  39. You know, just let me pray one more time as we turn to what Jesus says here.

  40. Lord Jesus, we're here to listen to what You say.

  41. And as Your followers, we are coming not to weigh what You say, decide whether we should obey,

  42. but we're coming to obey.

  43. We're listening so that we can obey.

  44. Lord, this is part of the teaching with which we are to instruct all the disciples

  45. when we make nations, disciples of the nations,

  46. instructing them in all that You have commanded, and this is part of that.

  47. And so, Lord, would You help us to not only hear,

  48. but to hear with hearts eager to obey, eager to understand.

  49. And it's Your name I pray once again.

  50. Amen.

  51. Alright, you guys ready to go back to first century Palestine?

  52. Here we go.

  53. If you'd open up your Bibles all the way back to Deuteronomy 24.

  54. Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament.

  55. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

  56. Why are we going there?

  57. In Matthew 5.31, Jesus says this,

  58. It was said, whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.

  59. He's not talking about something in the Ten Commandments.

  60. He's raising something that was an issue out of Deuteronomy 24, 1-4.

  61. And so, I want to bring you there so that you can see what the debate in the first century was over among Jewish religious leaders.

  62. And so, let's go there now.

  63. Deuteronomy 24.

  64. Deuteronomy 24.

  65. And we read this.

  66. When a man takes a wife and marries her, if, then, she finds no favor in his eyes because he's found some indecency.

  67. Those two words are going to be the center of the debate.

  68. If, then, if, then, if she goes and becomes another man's wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house,

  69. or if, the latter man dies who took her to be his wife, then, her former husband who sent her away may not take her again to be his wife after she has been defiled,

  70. for that is an abomination before the Lord.

  71. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

  72. There's a lot there.

  73. A lot of ifs.

  74. Did you notice the ifs?

  75. A lot of ifs.

  76. And then the word then shows up in verse 4.

  77. This passage is there really to establish the point of verse 4.

  78. And the specific situation it's addressing is if a guy divorces a woman, that woman remarries, and for whatever reason that second marriage dissolves,

  79. the first husband can't take the wife again.

  80. That's why this is here.

  81. It doesn't say whether divorce is right or wrong.

  82. What it's getting at is what if this happens?

  83. It's known as case law.

  84. And so it's addressing a specific situation.

  85. That's kind of the background on Deuteronomy 24, the passage itself.

  86. Now let's look at the issue of the debate.

  87. The debate wasn't about verse 4.

  88. The debate was over something in verse 1.

  89. And it was those two words, some indecency in the ESV.

  90. And so here's what was going on.

  91. There were two camps, two schools of rabbinical thought, of the teachers of the law of the day.

  92. And the first school was the school of Shammai.

  93. And Shammai would interpret those two words, some indecency, very narrowly, very rigidly.

  94. And they would say the some indecency is adultery.

  95. It's some grave, marital, physical, sexual event.

  96. That is the some indecency that allows for divorce.

  97. And so that's the school of Shammai over here.

  98. The other school is the school of Hillel.

  99. And the school of Hillel interpreted some indecency not narrowly, not rigidly, but very broadly, very generally.

  100. So what that meant was some rabbis would say some indecency would include divorcing a wife because she spoiled her husband's dinner.

  101. It's there.

  102. Or because a husband has found someone fairer than his wife.

  103. Those would become grounds for divorcing her and handing her a certificate of divorce.

  104. Now, if you're a woman in the room and you're like thinking, I could not believe living underneath something like that.

  105. You know what?

  106. I just might spoil this guy's dinner so he would hand me a certificate of divorce.

  107. But whether you believe we're part of the school of Shammai, the rigid approach, or part of the school of Hillel, the loose approach,

  108. both would say you have to give a certificate of divorce.

  109. And what a certificate of divorce was at that time was a way to protect a wife from a husband who was just very capricious,

  110. just like whatever, on a whim, get out of my face, you spoiled my dinner,

  111. or without having to give her some kind of legal protection.

  112. And so a certificate of divorce set out the right for a wife to remarry.

  113. And so the background of what's happening in Matthew 5 is this debate.

  114. And the question's going to become, where does Jesus come down?

  115. Is he school of Shammai or is he school of Hillel?

  116. Where does he fall down?

  117. Where does he come to?

  118. Before we get there, we've got to see where the Pharisees come down,

  119. because this is setting the whole thing up.

  120. And so if you would, knowing that the debate is over some indecency,

  121. and knowing the sides of the debate, would you now flip your Bibles to Matthew 19?

  122. Matthew 19.

  123. And we're going to be looking at 3 through 9.

  124. And just to give you a little help in understanding, this passage.

  125. In Matthew 19, 3 through 9, Jesus takes up the issue of divorce again.

  126. But there's a difference.

  127. It's in who he's talking to.

  128. In Matthew 5, it's his inaugural address.

  129. He's speaking to his disciples.

  130. In Matthew 19, he's speaking to Pharisees.

  131. They've asked him, what do you think about Deuteronomy 24.1?

  132. And so in Matthew 19, 3 through 9, we're going to spend most of our time there,

  133. because it reveals Jesus' mind on the matter more.

  134. It's more expansive.

  135. He explains more in Matthew 19, 3 through 9, on marriage and divorce,

  136. than he does in Matthew 5.

  137. So what we're going to do is we're going to use Matthew 19 to help us understand Matthew 5.

  138. And so what we see is what Jesus thinks about marriage and divorce.

  139. And we also learn where the Pharisees come down on Deuteronomy 24.

  140. Look at verse 3 of chapter 19 in Matthew.

  141. And Pharisees came up to him and tested him, which I always think is pretty funny,

  142. because they're testing the incarnate God of the universe.

  143. And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking,

  144. is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?

  145. Do you know why they're asking him the question?

  146. So what's the background of that question?

  147. Deuteronomy 24, 1 through 4.

  148. And so they want to know where Jesus is coming down on this whole divorce thing.

  149. Is it biblical?

  150. Is it okay that a husband divorces his wife for pretty much any cause?

  151. Jesus, where are you coming down on this debate?

  152. Now, what this kind of shows is the Pharisees' hand, where they actually are.

  153. And so what we'll see is that the Pharisees actually adhere to the school of Hillel.

  154. That they are holding to a position on divorce that is broad and loose.

  155. And so this should be somewhat of a surprise, because so far, on the issue of murder,

  156. and on the issue of adultery, they've been rather tight.

  157. Because it suited their purpose.

  158. And now when we get to this issue of when can you divorce,

  159. they go loose, because it served their purpose.

  160. And so Jesus is going to speak right into that.

  161. And all week long, I've been like, Jesus, you are so awesome.

  162. To speak like this.

  163. So Matthew 19, 3 through 9, what I'd like you to do,

  164. just to walk through each verse to help us understand what's being said,

  165. so that we can see what Jesus means.

  166. What Jesus is saying.

  167. So that we can hear our Savior and King speak.

  168. So we can walk after His ways.

  169. We can live in the light of His teaching.

  170. So, 19, 3, is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?

  171. The any cause is back to 24-1.

  172. This any kind of sense, any kind of reason,

  173. any kind of spoiling your dinner, anything like that.

  174. They're asking for a no-fault divorce.

  175. Some indecency.

  176. Jesus, do you agree with us?

  177. Would you just quickly flip back to 531?

  178. I want to help you understand what's being said in 531.

  179. Jesus says it was also said,

  180. and what you need to hear there is,

  181. it was also said by the Pharisees who've been teaching on this in our culture,

  182. that whoever divorces his wife for any cause,

  183. let him give her a certificate of divorce.

  184. And so Jesus is addressing the present teaching and understanding of this issue of divorce of the day.

  185. And so these dovetail very nicely.

  186. What, just for a little background,

  187. what had happened at this point is,

  188. the Pharisees were more concerned about getting the legal writing correct on the certificate of divorce.

  189. They wanted to make sure it was accurate,

  190. rather than asking,

  191. is the grounds right?

  192. And so what they were doing is they're asking,

  193. they want justification for no-fault divorce,

  194. a divorce that they can declare for any reason they want,

  195. but the wife really has no say in the matter.

  196. What we're looking here at is a sad situation.

  197. Heartbreaking.

  198. Difficult for a woman.

  199. It'd be a very difficult place to live and feel like you have a voice.

  200. So the Pharisees were adherents to the school of Hillel,

  201. the sum and decency that they thought about when they were interpreting loose and broad.

  202. And so they're asking Jesus in verse 3,

  203. hey, are you for us or against us?

  204. And this is where I want to turn to Jesus now,

  205. and I want to occupy our time with what does Jesus say?

  206. The first thing I want you to notice is in verse 4, 4 through 6,

  207. is where Jesus begins.

  208. Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?

  209. Our Savior King says,

  210. have you not read that He who created them from the beginning

  211. made them male and female and said,

  212. therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife

  213. and they shall become one flesh?

  214. So they're no longer two but one flesh.

  215. What therefore God has joined together,

  216. let not man separate.

  217. Did you notice where Jesus starts?

  218. He doesn't start in Deuteronomy 24.

  219. He starts in Genesis 1 and 2.

  220. In the beginning.

  221. Jesus goes back to the very start

  222. when God established marriage.

  223. That's where Jesus goes.

  224. And so in 19.4 when He says,

  225. have you not read that He who created them from the beginning

  226. made them male and female?

  227. He's talking about Genesis 1.26 and 27.

  228. God created man in His image.

  229. Male and female He created them.

  230. They are of the same value,

  231. but they're distinct in who they are physically in their roles,

  232. but the same value.

  233. God created them male and female.

  234. And then in verse 19.5 we read this.

  235. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother

  236. and hold fast to his wife

  237. and thou shalt become one flesh.

  238. He's talking about Genesis 2.24.

  239. The divine institution of marriage

  240. where God gives Eve to Adam

  241. and declares them,

  242. you're one flesh.

  243. It was the divine institution of marriage.

  244. Did you notice the one flesh language?

  245. Jesus is emphasizing that for a reason.

  246. Verse 6.

  247. So they are no longer two,

  248. but one flesh.

  249. What therefore God has joined together,

  250. let not man separate.

  251. Jesus is making explicit

  252. what's implied in Genesis 2.24

  253. in that it is God

  254. who is joining the first husband

  255. and the first wife.

  256. That's God at work.

  257. And so essentially what Jesus is saying here is,

  258. hey, divorce wasn't part of the original design.

  259. Wasn't part of the original design.

  260. In the beginning,

  261. God created,

  262. then joined one man and one woman

  263. in an exclusive,

  264. lifelong,

  265. one flesh union.

  266. And so the case that Jesus is making here

  267. is that marriage is sacred.

  268. And what the Pharisees were doing

  269. were they were trivializing marriage.

  270. That's the culture we live in today.

  271. You remove God from the equation

  272. and everything trivializes.

  273. You've got a lot more options.

  274. Jesus is returning God to marriage.

  275. And what He's saying is,

  276. what is normal and binding

  277. from the beginning

  278. is an exclusive,

  279. lifelong,

  280. one flesh union

  281. joined by God.

  282. Here's what Jesus is doing.

  283. It's very helpful.

  284. He's saying,

  285. let's not start with the exception.

  286. Deuteronomy 24.

  287. Let's start with the norm.

  288. Let's understand the norm

  289. so that we can understand the exception.

  290. And what He's making out to be the norm

  291. is Genesis 1 and 2.

  292. That marriage is sacred.

  293. It's a joining of one man and one woman

  294. by God Himself.

  295. He is fulfilling the intent of the law here.

  296. He's saying this is what it really means.

  297. The Pharisees had trivialized marriage,

  298. but Jesus is returning God's design

  299. and intent to marriage.

  300. He's returning the sacredness,

  301. the divine design of marriage.

  302. I know I've said it a lot,

  303. but marriage is God

  304. joining one man and one woman

  305. together exclusively for life.

  306. And so He answers the question

  307. by saying,

  308. you're not starting in the right place.

  309. You're not starting.

  310. Divorce is never part of the design

  311. to begin with.

  312. And then look at verse 7.

  313. They, the Pharisees, said to Him,

  314. why then did Moses command one

  315. to give a certificate of divorce

  316. and to send her away?

  317. It's kind of like,

  318. but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but,

  319. but what about this?

  320. What about this?

  321. What about Deuteronomy 24, Jesus?

  322. The Pharisees were seeking to trap Jesus

  323. by pitting one part of the law

  324. against another.

  325. And Jesus just totally dismantles them.

  326. He says, you guys are misguided.

  327. You're misguided.

  328. You've got misguided notions

  329. of Deuteronomy 24.

  330. And so let's turn to verse 8.

  331. There's, there's some things in it

  332. that are really important to see.

  333. Let me read it.

  334. He said to them,

  335. because of your hardness of heart,

  336. Moses allowed you to divorce your wives,

  337. but from the beginning,

  338. it was not so.

  339. So, he starts with this phrase,

  340. hardness of heart.

  341. Jesus is, is essentially saying this.

  342. Deuteronomy 24, 1 through 4,

  343. wasn't written to the humble of heart.

  344. That was written for the calloused of heart.

  345. And so, this was a problem

  346. that was rising because

  347. husbands with callous hearts

  348. were divorcing their wives

  349. any way they saw fit.

  350. And so this was,

  351. this is there to slow it down,

  352. to protect wives.

  353. And so, what the Pharisees were doing

  354. and what Jesus is exposing is,

  355. you're basing your whole system of divorce

  356. on a passage that assumes

  357. hardness of heart.

  358. You'd think that they would be suspect

  359. that this passage was being used

  360. to address a sin problem.

  361. But they were using it to justify

  362. what they wanted.

  363. And so, it was written

  364. not to soft hearts,

  365. but to calloused hearts.

  366. Those with a hardened heart.

  367. And Jesus is going after the Pharisees.

  368. Because of your hardness of heart,

  369. Moses allowed.

  370. That's the second thing in verse 8

  371. I want you to notice.

  372. Moses allowed divorce.

  373. He never commanded it.

  374. Look back in verse 7.

  375. The Pharisees said to Him,

  376. why then did Moses command one

  377. to give a certificate of divorce

  378. and to send her away?

  379. Jesus, because of your hardness of heart,

  380. Moses allowed you to divorce your wives.

  381. What Jesus is saying is,

  382. Deuteronomy 24 is there

  383. because of hardness on heart.

  384. And it's not a command.

  385. It's a concession.

  386. And so, these Pharisees were building

  387. a whole misguided view of divorce

  388. on this vague concession

  389. pertaining to a specific situation

  390. that was actually about

  391. a husband's hardness of heart.

  392. Do you follow what's going on here?

  393. And then Jesus,

  394. the last thing,

  395. He says,

  396. it's not so in the beginning.

  397. He returns us to creation.

  398. He returns us to Genesis 1 and 2.

  399. You shouldn't be building your view

  400. of divorce off a concession,

  401. but on God's clear and obvious,

  402. normal and binding word on marriage.

  403. It's exclusive and it's for life.

  404. It's a union that God joins.

  405. Marriage is sacred.

  406. You see Jesus?

  407. He's dismantling them.

  408. Isn't it so helpful to see Him doing it?

  409. Verse 9,

  410. we read,

  411. And I say to you,

  412. and I say to you,

  413. whoever divorces his wife

  414. except for sexual immorality

  415. and marries another commits adultery,

  416. and I say to you.

  417. It's emphatic.

  418. Jesus is saying,

  419. this is what the Word says,

  420. and I say to you,

  421. Pharisees,

  422. let's get this thing right.

  423. Now,

  424. that,

  425. and I say to you,

  426. should ring a little bit of a bell.

  427. If you flip back to Matthew 5.32,

  428. we read,

  429. And it was also said,

  430. whoever divorces his wife,

  431. let him give her a certificate of divorce,

  432. but I say to you,

  433. disciples,

  434. that everyone who divorces his wife

  435. except on the ground of sexual immorality

  436. makes her commit adultery,

  437. and whoever marries a divorced woman

  438. commits adultery.

  439. Jesus is saying the same thing

  440. in chapter 5 and chapter 19.

  441. In chapter 19,

  442. He just simply expands.

  443. That's why it's so helpful

  444. to see 19

  445. explaining chapter 5.

  446. That little phrase in 5.32,

  447. if you would just turn there now,

  448. chapter 5.32,

  449. But I say to you

  450. that everyone who divorces his wife

  451. except on the ground of sexual immorality

  452. makes her commit adultery.

  453. Did you see that?

  454. Here's what you need to realize

  455. in the first century.

  456. It was assumed

  457. that a divorced woman,

  458. in order to survive,

  459. would have to do one of two things.

  460. She would either have to go back

  461. to her father's house in shame,

  462. or she would have to find someone else to marry

  463. regardless of why she was divorced.

  464. Neither was a good option.

  465. And so what Jesus is saying is

  466. if you divorce your wife

  467. for any other reason

  468. besides sexual immorality,

  469. and I'll get to that in a second,

  470. but if you do that,

  471. you make her commit adultery.

  472. This was a time when a single woman,

  473. a single mom,

  474. was not a viable economic unit.

  475. She didn't have many choices.

  476. And so what Jesus is getting at is

  477. you've got to slow down

  478. if you're thinking about divorce.

  479. You've got to realize

  480. there's a lot at stake.

  481. The sacredness of marriage.

  482. God has joined two together as one.

  483. And if you do this step,

  484. you're going to cause your former wife

  485. to commit adultery.

  486. Which is incredibly ironic

  487. because the Pharisees

  488. were trying to get around it.

  489. And so what Jesus is doing here

  490. is given the sanctity of marriage,

  491. it's exclusive, lifelong,

  492. one flesh, joined by God.

  493. If you divorce your wife

  494. for a reason other than sexual immorality,

  495. you make her commit adultery

  496. by marrying another.

  497. And so what is behind this

  498. is what God is thinking about a marriage.

  499. Remember this language of one flesh?

  500. If there's a divorce

  501. without grounds of sexual immorality,

  502. that remarriage takes place

  503. and God is still thinking about

  504. that first marriage

  505. as a one flesh union.

  506. That's why the second marriage

  507. becomes an act of adultery.

  508. And the weight of what Jesus is saying here

  509. is not on the wife

  510. who's being made to commit adultery.

  511. It's on the husband

  512. who's causing her to do that.

  513. Jesus is saying,

  514. don't make this about her.

  515. This is about your hardness of heart.

  516. Let's look at this exception clause.

  517. The exception clause

  518. is the clause

  519. that begins with the word accept.

  520. In 532,

  521. accept on the ground

  522. of sexual immorality.

  523. In 19.9,

  524. accept for sexual immorality.

  525. So for us,

  526. what this means is this.

  527. There's other passages,

  528. 1 Corinthians 7,

  529. that raise other possibilities

  530. of separation

  531. and possibly remarriage.

  532. But what I want to do this morning

  533. is focus in

  534. on what Jesus is saying here

  535. so that we're all clear

  536. on what Jesus is saying.

  537. So we're not covering

  538. the whole waterfront

  539. of what the Bible says,

  540. but let's just get

  541. what Jesus is saying here.

  542. And so what Jesus is saying

  543. is the only exception

  544. He allows for,

  545. for divorce,

  546. is in the case

  547. of sexual immorality.

  548. So the question

  549. we need to ask is,

  550. what does that mean?

  551. What is sexual immorality

  552. and what is a cover?

  553. And so the Greek word

  554. behind sexual immorality

  555. is the word porneia.

  556. And it's a word

  557. that includes all kinds

  558. of physical,

  559. sexual irregularity.

  560. Things that would grieve God.

  561. And so,

  562. in the case of a husband

  563. being unfaithful to a wife,

  564. whether that husband

  565. is sexually,

  566. physically unfaithful

  567. with someone else

  568. who is married or unmarried,

  569. it's still porneia.

  570. Whether it is someone

  571. who is of the opposite sex

  572. or same sex,

  573. it's porneia.

  574. So whether it's another adult

  575. or a minor,

  576. it's porneia.

  577. So whether it's another human

  578. or an animal,

  579. it's porneia.

  580. And so what Jesus is doing

  581. is saying sexual immorality

  582. covers the gamut,

  583. porneia,

  584. of sexual,

  585. physical wrongdoing

  586. in God's eyes.

  587. And Jesus is saying

  588. that becomes grounds

  589. for divorce.

  590. and it's the sole exception

  591. that Jesus allows

  592. here in the book of Matthew.

  593. I

  594. have been weighing

  595. whether or not

  596. I should raise this point,

  597. but I think it would be helpful.

  598. Because I'm guessing

  599. some of you are in your pew

  600. asking,

  601. well,

  602. why just sexual immorality?

  603. Why not physical

  604. or verbal abuse?

  605. Surely that was a horrific event

  606. in the first century Palestine

  607. as it is in 21st century Kenosha.

  608. Well,

  609. I just want to humbly say

  610. here's my best understanding

  611. of why

  612. Jesus limits

  613. the grounds for divorce

  614. to just sexual immorality.

  615. Physical and verbal abuse

  616. are horrific in a marriage.

  617. But there seems to be

  618. a difference in our Savior's mind

  619. between that kind of wrongdoing

  620. and the kind of breach

  621. that is wrought upon a marriage

  622. through porneia.

  623. And so,

  624. all are wrong.

  625. But Jesus seems to say

  626. that there is something

  627. to this physical sexual act

  628. that has a unique

  629. devastating effect

  630. on a marriage.

  631. Sexual immorality

  632. disjoins

  633. the one flesh union

  634. God has joined together.

  635. What God has joined together.

  636. Let not man separate.

  637. Jesus is being very specific.

  638. If sexual immorality takes place,

  639. a marriage has suffered

  640. a kind of physical unjoining

  641. that can actually end

  642. a marriage

  643. in God's eyes.

  644. That's how serious

  645. Jesus sees

  646. sexual immorality.

  647. It's not to diminish

  648. the sinfulness

  649. of physical

  650. and verbal abuse,

  651. but it's heightening

  652. this issue of sexual fidelity

  653. in a marriage.

  654. So if there is sexual immorality,

  655. God allows

  656. for the one

  657. sinned against

  658. to remarry

  659. without being

  660. an adulterer.

  661. Without committing adulterer.

  662. The sinning spouse

  663. has already

  664. committed adultery

  665. because of their

  666. sexual immorality.

  667. So what we see

  668. in chapter 5

  669. verse 32

  670. in 19.9

  671. is a kind of warning

  672. that divorcing

  673. without biblical grounds,

  674. the grounds

  675. of sexual immorality,

  676. causes the remarriage

  677. of the

  678. divorcing husband

  679. and wife

  680. to start

  681. as an adulterous act

  682. because that marriage

  683. in God's eyes

  684. is still one flesh.

  685. So let me try to summarize

  686. what Jesus is saying here.

  687. And it's really instructive

  688. for us.

  689. Jesus starts

  690. in the beginning.

  691. Jesus starts

  692. with what's normal.

  693. God's design

  694. and creation.

  695. Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  696. chapter 1

  697. and 2.

  698. Much of our lives

  699. depend on Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  700. chapter 1

  701. and 2.

  702. It is

  703. vital

  704. scripture

  705. to our everyday living.

  706. What's normal

  707. is to see a marriage

  708. as an exclusive,

  709. lifelong,

  710. one flesh union

  711. joined together

  712. by God.

  713. It's normal

  714. and binding

  715. and it's where

  716. we must start

  717. in our everyday

  718. conversations

  719. in the 21st century.

  720. Jesus starts

  721. with the norm,

  722. not the exception.

  723. John Stott,

  724. his pastoral practice,

  725. when a couple

  726. who was considering

  727. divorce

  728. would come to him,

  729. he insisted

  730. that before they

  731. talk about divorce,

  732. they first talk about

  733. the nature of marriage

  734. and the nature

  735. of reconciliation.

  736. Good practice.

  737. The second thing

  738. I want to help you see here

  739. is that

  740. nowhere does God

  741. require divorce.

  742. Nowhere does He

  743. command divorce.

  744. Divorce,

  745. both in

  746. Deuteronomy 24

  747. and even here

  748. in Matthew 5

  749. and 19

  750. it's

  751. a concession,

  752. it's provisional.

  753. It's not a requirement.

  754. It's not a command.

  755. And what we saw

  756. in 19

  757. is that Jesus

  758. totally dismantles

  759. the Pharisees'

  760. false understanding

  761. of it being a command.

  762. God allowed for it,

  763. not required it.

  764. Do you know what's

  765. baked into

  766. Genesis 1 and 2?

  767. This is what I love

  768. about my Bible.

  769. God took that example

  770. of one man

  771. and one woman

  772. and He ran it

  773. through your Bible.

  774. From the beginning

  775. God had an idea.

  776. He says,

  777. I'm going to use this

  778. to communicate

  779. my relationship

  780. to my people.

  781. And so all throughout

  782. the Old Testament,

  783. you see it in Ezekiel 16,

  784. you see it in the book

  785. of Hosea,

  786. God takes on the role

  787. of a husband groom.

  788. And His people

  789. take on the role

  790. of the bride,

  791. the wife.

  792. And then when we turn

  793. to the New Testament,

  794. what we see is

  795. Jesus takes the role

  796. of the groom.

  797. And the church

  798. takes the role

  799. of the bride.

  800. And what we see

  801. over and over again

  802. used in this picture

  803. throughout the whole Bible

  804. is a faithful husband

  805. who lovingly forgives

  806. and reconciles

  807. with his wayward wife

  808. over and over

  809. and over again.

  810. Our God is a faithful husband.

  811. And it informs

  812. how we are to approach

  813. this issue of divorce

  814. even when

  815. the requirements

  816. are met.

  817. You see,

  818. above all,

  819. we're peacemakers.

  820. Blessed are the peacemakers.

  821. And so if I were

  822. to be approached

  823. by a person

  824. who was considering

  825. divorce

  826. and that person

  827. had biblical grounds,

  828. do you know

  829. what I would say?

  830. have you considered

  831. making peace?

  832. Have you considered

  833. forgiving the sin?

  834. This is good news

  835. for struggling marriages.

  836. What this essentially does

  837. is it removes divorce

  838. from the equation.

  839. It says we're going

  840. to work things out

  841. regardless how hard it gets.

  842. So if there's no grounds,

  843. there's no grounds.

  844. God has joined you together.

  845. There's work to be done.

  846. Another thing I want you to see

  847. in just kind of summary

  848. is that sexual immorality

  849. is the only grounds here

  850. that Jesus makes

  851. as an exception

  852. for divorce.

  853. So a spouse

  854. who has been sinned against

  855. sexually

  856. through this physical

  857. act of immorality,

  858. Jesus would allow you

  859. to end the marriage.

  860. It is provision.

  861. It is real.

  862. But once you choose

  863. to stay,

  864. if you choose to stay,

  865. the way forward

  866. is to forgive

  867. and to reconcile.

  868. And so you're

  869. no longer choosing

  870. to hold that sin

  871. over your spouse.

  872. You can't reclaim it

  873. in five years.

  874. You've forgiven him.

  875. Forgiven her.

  876. Now,

  877. if your spouse,

  878. that spouse,

  879. was to be

  880. sexually unfaithful again,

  881. you would need to weigh

  882. the same provision again.

  883. But it's a real provision.

  884. And we would love to help you.

  885. We'd love to help you

  886. navigate these hard waters.

  887. Back to this issue

  888. of physical abuse

  889. and verbal abuse.

  890. If it's not

  891. grounds for divorce,

  892. according to what

  893. Jesus is saying here,

  894. then how do we

  895. think about it?

  896. We've got to

  897. take it seriously.

  898. We've got to

  899. take steps of separation

  900. if need be.

  901. We've got to

  902. involve the authorities

  903. if required.

  904. But we're going to

  905. pursue reconciliation.

  906. We're going to

  907. seek to be peacemakers

  908. despite how

  909. hard and

  910. heart aching

  911. it becomes.

  912. We've got to

  913. be wise.

  914. We've got to

  915. live in what

  916. God allows

  917. and does not allow.

  918. And I would

  919. only humbly

  920. recommend that

  921. if you find

  922. yourself in a

  923. situation

  924. where you don't

  925. have grounds

  926. but it is hard,

  927. seek help.

  928. Ask for help.

  929. The elders of our

  930. church would love

  931. to help.

  932. We have people

  933. that can help

  934. as well.

  935. Seek help.

  936. If you are in

  937. the room and

  938. you have been

  939. divorced and

  940. you got a

  941. divorce without

  942. the grounds

  943. Jesus allows for

  944. here and then

  945. you got remarried,

  946. what Jesus is

  947. saying is that

  948. that was an

  949. act of adultery

  950. because in God's

  951. eyes this first

  952. marriage, your

  953. first marriage

  954. marriage was

  955. still a one

  956. flesh union.

  957. But you've got

  958. to see, Jesus

  959. chooses his words

  960. very carefully.

  961. In both

  962. chapter 5, 32

  963. and 19, 9,

  964. Jesus talks

  965. about whoever

  966. marries someone

  967. who's been

  968. divorced without

  969. grounds.

  970. It's a real

  971. marriage.

  972. marriage.

  973. The second

  974. marriage.

  975. Your second

  976. marriage is a

  977. real marriage.

  978. And Jesus

  979. doesn't call the

  980. one who does

  981. that an

  982. adulteress or

  983. an adulterer.

  984. He says they

  985. commit adultery.

  986. And so though the

  987. second marriage

  988. started on

  989. illegitimate grounds,

  990. it's still a real

  991. marriage in God's

  992. eyes and it's

  993. not the

  994. unforgivable

  995. sin.

  996. God has grace

  997. even for that.

  998. And I would

  999. just suggest

  1000. this.

  1001. If you find

  1002. yourself in that

  1003. situation,

  1004. just simply

  1005. go to Jesus,

  1006. call it what

  1007. he calls it,

  1008. and then call it

  1009. forgiven.

  1010. Because your

  1011. faithful husband

  1012. died for it.

  1013. Jesus did.

  1014. And then what

  1015. you want to do

  1016. is move forward

  1017. in your present

  1018. marriage for

  1019. his name's sake.

  1020. You don't need

  1021. to divorce the

  1022. person you're

  1023. presently married

  1024. to.

  1025. Stay as you

  1026. are, but

  1027. faithfully live

  1028. out your

  1029. vows before

  1030. God and your

  1031. spouse.

  1032. What God

  1033. has brought

  1034. together, let

  1035. not man

  1036. separate.

  1037. If you're

  1038. thinking about

  1039. getting a

  1040. divorce, you

  1041. need to slow

  1042. down.

  1043. You need to

  1044. ask some really

  1045. important questions.

  1046. What does

  1047. Jesus say?

  1048. Do you have

  1049. grounds?

  1050. Do you need

  1051. help?

  1052. If you need

  1053. help, help is

  1054. available.

  1055. I'd be glad to

  1056. help you.

  1057. Rick, other

  1058. elders, other

  1059. godly people of

  1060. this church will

  1061. be glad to help

  1062. you.

  1063. I'd only suggest

  1064. this.

  1065. You go to

  1066. someone who's

  1067. going to tell

  1068. you what you

  1069. need to hear

  1070. instead of what

  1071. you want to

  1072. hear.

  1073. Go to someone

  1074. who's going to

  1075. direct you to

  1076. the scriptures

  1077. and all of what

  1078. they say, not

  1079. what you just

  1080. want them to

  1081. say.

  1082. There's a last

  1083. group of people

  1084. that I want to

  1085. address this

  1086. morning.

  1087. Single people

  1088. thinking about

  1089. marriage.

  1090. Please

  1091. realize

  1092. the sacredness

  1093. of what you

  1094. desire.

  1095. That this

  1096. is a union

  1097. joined together

  1098. by God.

  1099. It's not to be

  1100. entered into

  1101. lightly.

  1102. So if you've

  1103. never been

  1104. married,

  1105. do you

  1106. understand

  1107. marriage as

  1108. Jesus understands

  1109. it?

  1110. Exclusive,

  1111. lifelong,

  1112. one-flesh

  1113. union that God

  1114. unites,

  1115. that God

  1116. joins.

  1117. Marriage is

  1118. sacred.

  1119. Let me end

  1120. by saying

  1121. this.

  1122. We live in a

  1123. culture that

  1124. has trivialized

  1125. marriage and

  1126. made divorce

  1127. very easy.

  1128. When we live

  1129. out our lives

  1130. in marriages
