  1. Well, good morning.

  2. I think it's fitting for us to begin with a word of prayer.

  3. Heavenly Father, You are good and wonderful.

  4. Thank You for these songs and these reminders today of Your goodness to us in Christ.

  5. God, I would just pray now that You would give us a spirit of wisdom and of revelation and knowledge of You

  6. that You would make known the immeasurable greatness of Your power to Your church today.

  7. I ask it in Christ's name and for His glory alone. Amen.

  8. I think as human beings we are a little bit awed by power.

  9. A tree fell on our house a couple years ago and I was able to acquire a chainsaw.

  10. I was pretty impressed by the power of this thing to just slice through this hard wood.

  11. I think of the athletic competitions and the power displayed by a defensive lineman

  12. as he sheds the double team and gets into the backfield to trample on the quarterback.

  13. Or Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world as he wins yet another gold medal in a sprint at the Summer Olympics.

  14. I think of the power that's demonstrated in nature.

  15. Waves crashing against the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

  16. Thunderstorms.

  17. The electricity of the lightning, if you've ever been close enough to experience that.

  18. The rumbling of thunder itself.

  19. And then there's times when nature kind of even acts in a stronger way

  20. and it devastates creation with earthquakes and tornadoes.

  21. But this passage that we're looking at today in Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  22. there's an even greater power on display.

  23. One that just trumps all natural types of power imaginable.

  24. In fact, you could combine them all together and you still wouldn't even begin to touch on how great a power this is.

  25. It's a supernatural power.

  26. It's a spectacular power.

  27. And it's worth considering together again this morning.

  28. Of course, I'm talking about the power of God.

  29. And the way that the Apostle Paul is going to set this out for us today, I believe, is ultimately to drive at this.

  30. If you could take away one belief, if you could leave here with one thought, it would be this.

  31. That salvation is the display of the immeasurable greatness of God's power exercised for you.

  32. It's God's spiritual muscle flexing for us.

  33. It's a display of unimaginable strength.

  34. Salvation is the immeasurable greatness of God's power exercised for you.

  35. So let me read this for us.

  36. If you haven't turned there, we're going to be in Ephesians 2, verses 1 to 10.

    Ephesians 2:1–10

  37. This is God's word to us.

  38. Paul writes,

  39. And we're by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind.

  40. So just to give us a little bit of context about where we find ourselves,

  41. of course, Mike preached through this book a couple years ago,

  42. and you may be wondering, well, why are we back in Ephesians today?

  43. It seemed good to us to, in the midst of some hard passages of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount,

  44. talking about the exceeding sinfulness of sin,

  45. to be reminded this morning of our great salvation.

  46. And so, Paul starts out his letter by affirming his apostolic authority,

  47. and then he goes right into these spiritual blessings.

  48. In fact, we have every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

  49. That's how chapter 1 starts, and he outlines them.

  50. The Father is at work.

  51. The Son is at work in redemption.

  52. The Holy Spirit sealing us until our inheritance is possessed by us.

  53. And then he starts praying for this church in Ephesus,

  54. and the height of his prayer, he's saying,

  55. God, give this church, give this people a spirit of wisdom and of revelation and knowledge of you.

  56. Enlighten the eyes of their hearts.

  57. And then he says,

  58. so that they know the hope to which they're called,

  59. that they know the glorious inheritance,

  60. and then this one here in verse 19,

  61. what is the immeasurable greatness of God's power toward us who believe.

  62. And he unpacks that by talking about Jesus and his resurrection and his ascension,

  63. his lordship over all dominions and authorities,

  64. his headship over the church,

  65. and then in further description of the great immeasurable power of God,

  66. we come to our chapter 2, verses 1 to 10.

  67. That's why I say that God wants us to see that salvation is the immeasurable greatness of his power extended to us.

  68. And so Paul is going to be very clear in this passage.

  69. There's three parts to his argument.

  70. We're just going to follow straight down the page and see them all,

  71. hopefully very clearly this morning.

  72. So part one is the powerlessness of man in our hopeless condition.

  73. We see that in the first three verses.

  74. We see immediately in verse 1,

  75. and you are dead.

  76. It's worse than we could have ever imagined, friends.

  77. There's no apparent way forward.

  78. There's no recovering from this.

  79. Dead.

  80. Corpses.

  81. Spiritual corpses.

  82. Not dying.

  83. Not sick.

  84. 100% dead.

  85. In trespasses and sins.

  86. Paul's redundancy in speaking of it this way is to outline the comprehensive moral evil

  87. in which humanity finds ourselves.

  88. In other words, he's talking about, cumulatively, the intentional boundary crossings,

  89. the misstepping of God's laws.

  90. He's talking about falling short of God's standard in spite of our best efforts.

  91. He's talking about our active wrongdoings and our passive misgivings.

  92. He's talking about the sins that we commit and the goods that we omit.

  93. All-inclusive.

  94. This deadness he speaks of is a spiritual alienation from God.

  95. Severed relationship with our Creator.

  96. But there's more.

  97. In verse 2 and 3, we see that not only are we dead in sins,

  98. but we're enslaved to this evil's triple threat.

  99. The world, Satan, and the flesh.

  100. If you look in verse 2, we see that we were once walking in these trespasses and sins,

  101. following the course of this world,

  102. following the prince of the power of the air,

  103. the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

  104. This walking Paul speaks of is not a pleasant stroll,

  105. and it's not as if we've got this nice, spick-and-span clean outfit,

  106. and we're kind of tiptoeing through a bunch of sin, trying not to get dirty.

  107. No, we're immersed in it.

  108. This is our lifestyle, apart from Christ.

  109. Marching in step with a corrupt world,

  110. living life according to society's moral failure,

  111. arrogance, mockery of God,

  112. indifferent to sin,

  113. promoting self,

  114. trying to preserve self,

  115. trying to exalt self.

  116. It's, of course,

  117. marred by evil.

  118. And it seems most likely that Paul connects this purposefully to this prince of the power of the air,

  119. found at the end of verse 2 there.

  120. Of course, this is Satan,

  121. and it's probably best not to think so much of his power here,

  122. but of his domain.

  123. It's the territory of the air that this demonic angel is ruling over.

  124. This realm of the air,

  125. it's a little bit tricky to understand,

  126. but basically what it seems like Paul is saying is that

  127. he's not a tangible body on earth,

  128. but he's neither in the heavenly places in authority,

  129. but he's in kind of this in-between world of spiritual darkness,

  130. and it's impacting directly everything that takes place on this earth.

  131. Notice that Paul says,

  132. now at work.

  133. And I think we can extend that now up to today, obviously,

  134. without much question.

  135. Satan still roams and rules over those who are apart from Christ to this day.

  136. But just to make sure that we're not the unwilling victims in this situation,

  137. Paul continues in verse 3,

  138. that we once lived in the passions of our flesh.

  139. Notice that he's no longer saying just you, Ephesians,

  140. but now we.

  141. Paul begins including himself in this depraved situation

  142. because it's true not just of the immoral,

  143. but of the religious elites as well.

  144. Again, Paul needs to be understood here that when he says lived,

  145. in verse 3,

  146. he's not talking about just being simply in a proximity

  147. with these sons of disobedience,

  148. but again,

  149. conducting our lives in a manner corresponding

  150. to their current manner of living.

  151. We were lusting after the fleshly passions,

  152. actively carrying them out in corrupt desires,

  153. body and mind,

  154. thoughts and actions.

  155. Verse 3 here rejects the notion of being an innocent victim

  156. in this game of sin.

  157. And it puts all of the ultimate responsibility upon us.

  158. It portrays dead people in step with a fallen world

  159. and enslaved to the devil.

  160. I think it's probably, of course,

  161. easy for us to see this reality

  162. when we think of the big sins, right,

  163. and the ways that sin just is rampant.

  164. It's violence, adultery, drunkenness,

  165. drug abuse, theft, murder.

  166. But it raises a question for us.

  167. How can Paul then, this Hebrew of Hebrews,

  168. this one who says under the law is blameless

  169. and really means that in Philippians,

  170. how can he include himself in this?

  171. As I think about it,

  172. I realize that Paul as easily condemns moralism

  173. and religion as he does blatant, outright,

  174. immoral behavior.

  175. See, moralism, religion,

  176. they don't save either.

  177. And they're equally condemning for a man.

  178. Think of Jesus addressing the Pharisees

  179. in any place in the Gospels

  180. and how quickly he points to their lack of righteousness,

  181. even though they're the expert law keepers.

  182. Think of even the Sermon on the Mount

  183. when Jesus says,

  184. unless your righteousness exceeds that

  185. of the scribes and Pharisees,

  186. you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

  187. Well, no, these religious elites

  188. have this mentality that

  189. no savior is required for me.

  190. My works speak for themselves.

  191. It's self-righteousness,

  192. self-justification,

  193. and ultimately pride,

  194. which, interestingly enough,

  195. is the downfall of this prince

  196. of the domain of the air.

  197. Tim Keller is really helpful

  198. in kind of unpacking this for us

  199. in a book that he wrote

  200. on the parable of the prodigal son.

  201. And he writes how

  202. it should probably be more

  203. of the parable of the prodigal sons,

  204. plural,

  205. because both of these young men

  206. are equally corrupt

  207. and debased before their father.

  208. The young son squanders his inheritance

  209. and runs off.

  210. The elder brother stays close by.

  211. Listen to what Tim Keller writes

  212. about this older brother.

  213. What did the older son want?

  214. If we think about it,

  215. we realize that he wanted

  216. the same thing as his brother.

  217. He was just as resentful of the father

  218. as was the younger son.

  219. He, too, wanted the father's goods

  220. rather than the father himself.

  221. The older brother stayed close

  222. and never disobeyed.

  223. That was his way to get control.

  224. His unspoken demand is,

  225. I have never disobeyed you.

  226. Now you have to do things in my life

  227. the way I want them to be done.

  228. I hope you hear in that

  229. the sense of entitlement,

  230. the attempt to manipulate

  231. a sovereign God

  232. and the desire to control

  233. the outcome

  234. by doing good things.

  235. Paul seems to say here

  236. that this is

  237. the depraved

  238. and reprehensible motivation

  239. behind all religious effort.

  240. It's not as obvious, perhaps,

  241. as the eat and drink and be merry,

  242. but it's equally condemnable

  243. before God.

  244. Unfortunately, the situation

  245. gets worse before we move on

  246. to the good news.

  247. We see the last statement

  248. of verse 3

  249. that we not only were dead

  250. and enslaved,

  251. but by nature

  252. were children of wrath

  253. like the rest of mankind.

  254. This is a huge concept

  255. to try and unpack

  256. in a really brief moment,

  257. but basically,

  258. we need to consider

  259. a couple of things here.

  260. What Paul is saying

  261. is,

  262. as naturally as eagles soar

  263. and as lions roar,

  264. part of our spiritual DNA

  265. as Adam's descendants

  266. is incurring wrath

  267. by our nature.

  268. Romans 5 sort of unpacks this

  269. in verses 12 to 21.

  270. The basic idea is that

  271. sin comes in through Adam,

  272. through one man,

  273. death through that sin,

  274. and then death spreads

  275. to everyone

  276. because everyone has sinned.

  277. One trespass,

  278. one trespass

  279. leads to death

  280. for all people.

  281. I don't know about you,

  282. but I tend to take offense

  283. at this statement

  284. that by my nature,

  285. from my first breath

  286. to my last,

  287. I deserve wrath.

  288. This is terribly offensive,

  289. yet it's biblical.

  290. It's right here.

  291. By our nature,

  292. we are deserving

  293. of God's righteous anger

  294. and judgment for sin.

  295. We are active rebels,

  296. substandard performers,

  297. and we deserve wrath.

  298. So let me encourage you

  299. this morning,

  300. don't get caught up

  301. trying to see

  302. who the better dead guy is.

  303. This isn't an opportunity

  304. to say,

  305. well,

  306. better than that guy

  307. over there.

  308. This isn't a,

  309. you know,

  310. that's what religion does,

  311. right?

  312. That's what morality does.

  313. Paul's leveling it.

  314. Like everyone.

  315. Universal human condition.

  316. It's right in front of us here.

  317. This is intended

  318. to sober us,

  319. and it's intended

  320. to humble us.

  321. That,

  322. brother,

  323. sister,

  324. your spiritual condition,

  325. apart from Christ,

  326. it's hard to admit

  327. and even more impossible

  328. to reconcile,

  329. but we are hopeless,

  330. dead men and women

  331. awaiting judgment.

  332. enslavement,

  333. enslaved by the triad

  334. of evil,

  335. heaping up wrath

  336. for ourselves.

  337. But God.

  338. But God.

  339. Amazingly,

  340. Paul does not

  341. leave us there,

  342. and even more amazingly,

  343. neither does God.

  344. Most importantly,

  345. neither does God.

  346. The beginning of verse 4

  347. begins the second section

  348. of this chapter,

  349. of these verses,

  350. and probably begins

  351. with my two favorite

  352. words of the Bible.

  353. But God.

  354. It seems here

  355. that Paul knows

  356. right at the outset

  357. of verse 4

  358. that he needs to

  359. ward off any objections

  360. to what he's about to say

  361. before getting

  362. to what God does.

  363. So,

  364. he gives two reasons

  365. for why God does

  366. what he does.

  367. See that in verse 4?

  368. But God,

  369. being rich in mercy

  370. because of the great love

  371. with which he loved us.

  372. If we continue there

  373. just to the beginning

  374. of verse 5,

  375. even when we are dead

  376. in trespasses.

  377. This mercy

  378. is a concept

  379. that he's talking about

  380. this kindness

  381. expressed towards

  382. someone in need.

  383. It's kind of

  384. simplifying a little bit

  385. considering what we just read,

  386. but that's the mercy

  387. that Paul's writing about

  388. and the thing

  389. that is so sweet

  390. to me about it

  391. is how unexpected

  392. this mercy is.

  393. Great love for enemies,

  394. rebels,

  395. and failures.

  396. A mercy

  397. expressed to those

  398. in need.

  399. Paul says,

  400. hold on.

  401. Wrath

  402. is not the whole

  403. image

  404. of my God.

  405. let me tell you

  406. about his compassion

  407. and his love.

  408. He's rich in mercy.

  409. He does not wish

  410. that any should perish.

  411. He's loving,

  412. he's enough loving

  413. of his enemies

  414. to take action

  415. for them.

  416. Friends,

  417. isn't this why

  418. we worship him

  419. and adore him

  420. and gather here

  421. to sing his praises?

  422. Because he's a merciful God,

  423. a loving God.

  424. God.

  425. So then Paul,

  426. after giving these reasons,

  427. goes on to talk about

  428. the activity of God

  429. when he forgave us

  430. the end, right?

  431. No.

  432. What does he say

  433. in verse 5 and 6?

  434. Made us alive

  435. together with Christ

  436. by grace you have been saved

  437. and raised us up with him

  438. and seated us with him

  439. in the heavenly places

  440. in Christ Jesus.

  441. Forgiveness.

  442. Salvation is

  443. no less certainly

  444. than forgiveness,

  445. but oh,

  446. it is so much more.

  447. It radically changes

  448. our entire position

  449. before a holy

  450. and righteous God.

  451. From children of wrath

  452. to made alive,

  453. new spiritual birth

  454. in Christ,

  455. raised with him

  456. and exalted

  457. into the heavenly places,

  458. positioned with him

  459. and John Stott

  460. remarks that

  461. certainly that means

  462. that there's thrones

  463. for us

  464. to be seated in.

  465. And you notice

  466. how what Paul says here,

  467. it undoes

  468. the effects

  469. of verses 1 to 3.

  470. It undoes

  471. the deadness.

  472. Dead people

  473. made alive,

  474. got that one checked off.

  475. In this

  476. worldly realm,

  477. this course

  478. of an evil world,

  479. under the influence

  480. of a demonic

  481. spirit of the air,

  482. done away with,

  483. exalted to the heavenly places,

  484. above that domain

  485. of the air,

  486. no more satanic power

  487. over us.

  488. Enslavement?

  489. Nope.

  490. Thrones in heaven.

  491. And certainly,

  492. no wrath

  493. when we are united

  494. with the sinless

  495. Son of God.

  496. It's a new existence,

  497. a new identity,

  498. a new domain.

  499. This is Paul

  500. unpacking what

  501. Colossians 1.13

  502. says so succinctly,

  503. that he has delivered us

  504. from the domain

  505. of darkness

  506. and transferred us

  507. to the kingdom

  508. of his beloved Son.

  509. No longer children

  510. of wrath.

  511. A new nature

  512. in Christ,

  513. adopted sons

  514. and daughters

  515. of the King.

  516. Friends,

  517. make no mistake,

  518. this is a current

  519. spiritual reality.

  520. If you're in Christ,

  521. this is now

  522. currently true.

  523. So this,

  524. of course,

  525. changes how we view

  526. ourselves

  527. and one another.

  528. Positionally found

  529. with Christ

  530. now,

  531. forever,

  532. for all eternity.

  533. This is what's

  534. most true

  535. about us.

  536. And not only

  537. should it change

  538. how we view

  539. ourselves

  540. and each other,

  541. but it should make

  542. us long

  543. for the future

  544. when God fulfills

  545. this

  546. once and for all.

  547. Notice in these

  548. verses that

  549. four times

  550. Jesus is mentioned.

  551. In verse 5 and 6,

  552. made us alive

  553. together with Christ.

  554. Verse 6,

  555. raised us up

  556. with Him,

  557. seated us

  558. with Him

  559. in the heavenly

  560. places in Christ

  561. Jesus.

  562. This assumes

  563. some things

  564. about our Savior.

  565. He's alive,

  566. He's exalted,

  567. He's reigning

  568. over all rule

  569. and authority,

  570. and He's our

  571. only hope.

  572. Paul's not

  573. quite done

  574. describing

  575. God's

  576. actions.

  577. Verse 7

  578. gives us

  579. the purpose

  580. behind them.

  581. This is so amazing.

  582. Look at it.

  583. So that in the

  584. coming ages,

  585. He might show

  586. the immeasurable

  587. riches of His

  588. grace and

  589. kindness toward us

  590. in Christ Jesus.

  591. God purposes

  592. to save us

  593. in this

  594. grand

  595. scale,

  596. epic

  597. salvation

  598. so that in the

  599. coming ages,

  600. the immeasurable

  601. greatness of

  602. His power

  603. would manifest

  604. itself in the

  605. immeasurable

  606. riches of His

  607. grace toward us.

  608. It's aimed at us

  609. forever.

  610. What do we do

  611. with this?

  612. I mean,

  613. we don't just get

  614. to witness the

  615. grace of God.

  616. We're the

  617. recipients,

  618. the goal of His

  619. grace for

  620. eternity.

  621. Dead,

  622. enslaved,

  623. and destined

  624. for wrath,

  625. usurped by

  626. God's mercy,

  627. love,

  628. grace,

  629. and kindness

  630. in Christ.

  631. Thanks be to

  632. God.

  633. One final move

  634. in Paul's

  635. argument here,

  636. verses 8-10.

  637. Kind of think of

  638. these as the

  639. contractual terms

  640. of this salvation.

  641. I imagine a

  642. businessman who's

  643. just heard the

  644. Apostle Paul kind

  645. of outline this

  646. salvation,

  647. the great things

  648. that Christ has

  649. done,

  650. the great power

  651. that God has

  652. demonstrated in

  653. resurrecting Him

  654. and us with Him,

  655. seating Him and

  656. us in the

  657. heavenly places,

  658. and asking,

  659. kind of like that,

  660. Paul.

  661. It sounds pretty

  662. good.

  663. You know,

  664. reach in for his

  665. pocketbook.

  666. How much do I owe

  667. you?

  668. You know,

  669. do you have a

  670. payment plan?

  671. What do I got to

  672. do to get this?

  673. Paul's at,

  674. shh,

  675. grace.

  676. Grace.

  677. Grace.

  678. Grace.

  679. Grace.

  680. Grace.

  681. Grace.

  682. Grace.

  683. Grace.

  684. Grace.

  685. You want to know

  686. the terms of the

  687. contract?

  688. Grace.

  689. If you're asking

  690. today, how do you

  691. get it?

  692. How do you get the

  693. salvation?

  694. It's by grace.

  695. It's by accepting

  696. the gift of God.

  697. No other way.

  698. There's no other

  699. terms.

  700. There's no fine

  701. print.

  702. There's no clean

  703. yourself up and then

  704. come get the grace.

  705. Just receive it.

  706. Receive it.

  707. Ephesians 2, 8, and 9

  708. are a couple of my

  709. first ever, you know,

  710. memory verses as I

  711. was growing as a

  712. Christian and I think

  713. that's great.

  714. They're so good,

  715. right?

  716. But it hasn't been

  717. until recently that

  718. I've started seeing

  719. how they function in

  720. Paul's argument in

  721. this passage.

  722. These verses, 8

  723. through 10, are

  724. really supporting

  725. what's come before

  726. it in verses 4 to

  727. 7.

  728. They're strengthening

  729. Paul's argument as

  730. he talks about

  731. salvation.

  732. And I think they do

  733. it in this way that

  734. they're trying to

  735. ward off the

  736. questions that seem

  737. to be looking to

  738. make salvation too

  739. good to be true.

  740. I mean, how can

  741. salvation really

  742. truly exist?

  743. How can this be the

  744. way it is for

  745. children of wrath?

  746. Paul says, grace.

  747. By grace you've been

  748. saved through faith.

  749. This is not a

  750. result of works.

  751. It's not your own

  752. doing.

  753. It's the gift of God.

  754. Not a result of work

  755. so that no one may

  756. boast for his

  757. workmanship.

  758. I love what Charles

  759. Spurgeon says.

  760. He writes simply

  761. that where grace

  762. exists, it reigns.

  763. It rules.

  764. It owns.

  765. It has no rivals.

  766. It reigns.

  767. That's why Paul goes

  768. there.

  769. He intends to

  770. silence the doubters

  771. and humble the

  772. recipients.

  773. Notice back in

  774. verse 5 that he

  775. already interjected

  776. this grace into his

  777. tale of salvation.

  778. He can't contain

  779. himself.

  780. It's just this

  781. outburst of joy to

  782. say, it's all grace.

  783. It's all grace.

  784. And now he comes

  785. back to it in these

  786. final three verses.

  787. Let's make sure we're

  788. clear on what this

  789. grace is.

  790. It's freely given

  791. unmerited favor.

  792. It's not earned.

  793. It's not purchased.

  794. It can't be bartered

  795. for.

  796. It's gifted to

  797. undeserving people.

  798. And it's not an abstract,

  799. warm, and fuzzy kind of

  800. thing like we tend to

  801. apply to terms today.

  802. I love pizza.

  803. No.

  804. Concrete,

  805. objective,

  806. historical reality.

  807. The grace of God here

  808. points to the person and

  809. work of Jesus Christ.

  810. salvation,

  811. friends,

  812. is not just the reality

  813. of our union with

  814. Jesus,

  815. our being raised with

  816. him and seated with

  817. him,

  818. but it's because of his

  819. work on behalf of

  820. sinners.

  821. Jesus becoming a man.

  822. We sang this song.

  823. Thanks, brother.

  824. We sang this song.

  825. Perfect obedience to

  826. the Father.

  827. No shortcomings,

  828. no failures,

  829. no missteps,

  830. no nothing,

  831. but perfect obedience.

  832. Dying on a cross

  833. on behalf of sinners.

  834. Taking the wrath of God

  835. that we deserve by our

  836. very nature on himself.

  837. Raised from the dead.

  838. Exalted to God's right

  839. hand.

  840. Now the ruling and

  841. reigning king over all

  842. the powers that be in the

  843. whole universe.

  844. That's the grace Paul's

  845. getting at here.

  846. That's his way of saying,

  847. Jesus, you're saved.

  848. By grace,

  849. you've been saved.

  850. Paul keeps a source

  851. before us, right?

  852. Verse 8,

  853. Not you,

  854. God.

  855. Those words

  856. butt up against each

  857. other in the original.

  858. Not you,

  859. of God the gift.

  860. That's kind of how it

  861. reads.

  862. It's his gift.

  863. And it's not a result

  864. of works.

  865. It's not general,

  866. morally upright behavior

  867. that earns this salvation

  868. or accomplishes it

  869. in any way.

  870. That's why there's no

  871. boasting, right?

  872. When we're rightly

  873. contrasting verses 1-3

  874. with verses 4-7,

  875. boasting is done away with.

  876. There's no room for it.

  877. God initiates,

  878. and God works

  879. from beginning to end

  880. to accomplish salvation

  881. for us

  882. in Christ.

  883. So God wants the credit

  884. he deserves.

  885. Dead people aren't working

  886. for salvation.

  887. They're working for wrath.

  888. So boasting in anything

  889. other than in Jesus

  890. shows a radical

  891. misunderstanding

  892. of what this gospel

  893. is about.

  894. Maybe you're asking yourself,

  895. what about faith?

  896. I see that.

  897. Verse 8,

  898. you've been saved

  899. by grace

  900. through faith.

  901. Here's how that faith

  902. comes into play.

  903. It's taking the objective,

  904. historical reality

  905. of God's grace

  906. in Christ

  907. and receiving it

  908. personally

  909. for yourself.

  910. It's taking what is

  911. objectively true

  912. and saying,

  913. I believe that

  914. and I hope in that

  915. and I trust in that

  916. forever and ever.

  917. That's how faith works

  918. alongside the grace

  919. of God.

  920. Faith saves insofar

  921. as it clings to Jesus

  922. and trusts in God's grace.

  923. and finally we see

  924. verse 10.

  925. This is so good.

  926. Paul writes,

  927. yet another strengthening

  928. point

  929. to prove

  930. what he has just said

  931. in verses 8 and 9.

  932. We are his workmanship

  933. created in Christ Jesus

  934. for good works

  935. which God prepared

  936. beforehand

  937. that we should walk

  938. in them.

  939. It's Paul's last

  940. and final effort

  941. here in this passage

  942. to communicate

  943. God did it.

  944. We are his work.

  945. This word is beautiful.

  946. It talks of

  947. the NIV

  948. if you have that

  949. in front of you

  950. it talks about

  951. handiwork.

  952. Think of

  953. craftsmanship

  954. but more importantly

  955. it's creation.

  956. God is taking

  957. something

  958. that has

  959. no form

  960. no substance

  961. no goodness

  962. and making

  963. something new.

  964. We see that, right?

  965. Created in Christ Jesus.

  966. Created.

  967. Not sort of just

  968. not just resurrected

  969. not just made new

  970. created.

  971. This is the 2 Corinthians

  972. 5.17

  973. notion that

  974. whoever is in Christ

  975. is a new creation.

  976. This is

  977. like a spiritualized

  978. Genesis 1.

  979. In the beginning

  980. of salvation

  981. God created

  982. alive

  983. spiritual

  984. men and women

  985. who were once

  986. dead in their

  987. trespasses and sins.

  988. Jesus here

  989. is seen

  990. as the

  991. craftsman's

  992. tool.

  993. It's his

  994. salvific work

  995. that creates

  996. the new

  997. and living

  998. people of God.

  999. So Christian

  1000. if you're here

  1001. today and you're

  1002. looking for

  1003. purpose

  1004. here it is.

  1005. This verse

  1006. tells us

  1007. created in Christ

  1008. for good works.

  1009. For good works.

  1010. It's why we are

  1011. made alive

  1012. with Christ.

  1013. It's why

  1014. we were raised

  1015. from the dead

  1016. given new life

  1017. saved

  1018. for good works.

  1019. not works

  1020. that save

  1021. us

  1022. but works

  1023. that carry

  1024. out God's

  1025. new purpose

  1026. for living

  1027. people in

  1028. Christ.

  1029. If you want

  1030. to study

  1031. kind of what

  1032. these look

  1033. like I invite

  1034. you to

  1035. read over

  1036. chapters 4,

  1037. 5,

  1038. and 6.

  1039. If you remember

  1040. Mike made a

  1041. great point

  1042. as he was

  1043. going through

  1044. this book

  1045. on the

  1046. number of

  1047. times that

  1048. you see

  1049. walk,

  1050. walk,

  1051. walk.

  1052. Because that's

  1053. how this

  1054. passage in

  1055. chapter 10

  1056. ends that

  1057. we should

  1058. walk in

  1059. them.

  1060. Chapter 4,

  1061. the beginning,

  1062. it doesn't

  1063. give us

  1064. specific good

  1065. works but it

  1066. tells us how

  1067. they should be

  1068. characterized,

  1069. what kind of

  1070. heart should be

  1071. applied to

  1072. these.

  1073. Humility and

  1074. gentleness,

  1075. patience,

  1076. bearing with

  1077. one another in

  1078. love,

  1079. and eager to

  1080. maintain the

  1081. unity of the

  1082. spirit and the

  1083. bond of peace.

  1084. There's good

  1085. works for each

  1086. and every one

  1087. of us in this

  1088. room who is a

  1089. Christian.

  1090. God's prepared

  1091. us for them.

  1092. I love this

  1093. last word,

  1094. walk,

  1095. because it

  1096. adequately

  1097. bookends this

  1098. section.

  1099. It illustrates

  1100. how far as the

  1101. people of God

  1102. we have come.

  1103. Following a

  1104. hopeless course

  1105. of the world,

  1106. enslaved by

  1107. Satan,

  1108. living for

  1109. fleshly desires,

  1110. rejecting God

  1111. and awaiting

  1112. judgment,

  1113. walking in all

  1114. of that,

  1115. made alive in

  1116. Christ,

  1117. rescued by

  1118. objective,

  1119. historical

  1120. grace,

  1121. unexpected

  1122. kindness

  1123. shown to

  1124. us,

  1125. transferred into

  1126. the kingdom of

  1127. Jesus Christ

  1128. and created

  1129. anew for good

  1130. works.

  1131. grace.

  1132. So now,

  1133. we walk not

  1134. in sin,

  1135. but in good

  1136. works,

  1137. not to earn

  1138. our salvation,

  1139. but in

  1140. gratitude for

  1141. God's free

  1142. and gracious

  1143. gift.

  1144. Brothers and

  1145. sisters,

  1146. this is your

  1147. salvation.

  1148. This surely

  1149. is the

  1150. immeasurable

  1151. greatness of

  1152. God's power

  1153. extended to

  1154. us.

  1155. Let's pray.

  1156. God, it is

  1157. impossible to

  1158. overstate the

  1159. goodness of

  1160. this word.

  1161. I pray for

  1162. all of us that

  1163. it would season

  1164. our lives in a

  1165. way that's

  1166. pleasing to

  1167. you.

  1168. God, would you

  1169. help us by

  1170. faith to

  1171. receive this,

  1172. rejoice in

  1173. this each and

  1174. every day?

  1175. Would you

  1176. help us to

  1177. walk in the

  1178. good works you

  1179. have for us?

  1180. Thank you for

  1181. this morning.

  1182. Thank you for

  1183. your word.

  1184. We praise your

  1185. name through

  1186. Jesus.

  1187. Amen.
