  1. Matthew 5, verses 43-48.

    Matthew 5:43–48

  2. Jesus is going to say to us,

  3. let me clarify this hate your enemy thing.

  4. An enemy is someone who is a constant threat.

  5. An enemy is someone who is constantly looking

  6. to make life hard for you.

  7. Now, we know our enemies, spiritually speaking,

  8. the devil is our enemy, sin in us is our enemy.

  9. But Jesus has been talking about really

  10. kind of personal relationships

  11. all throughout this section in the Sermon on the Mount.

  12. This morning we're talking about other people

  13. who've got it in for you.

  14. Who hate you.

  15. Who see you as their enemy.

  16. Maybe you hurt somebody years ago

  17. and they've had it in for you ever since.

  18. Or maybe you're just looking to follow Jesus.

  19. You're just looking to be faithful to your Savior and King

  20. and you've taken a stand for Jesus in some areas

  21. and you know what?

  22. Now you suffer for it.

  23. People actually hate you for it.

  24. This morning, right now,

  25. the beginning of this message,

  26. I want to ask you,

  27. is there someone in your mind right now?

  28. Is there someone in your mind right now

  29. that you know has it in for you?

  30. Another person.

  31. They hate you.

  32. They want to make life hard for you.

  33. Well, if you have an enemy who hates you,

  34. the temptation is to hate them right back

  35. and to be justified in that.

  36. But Jesus tells us this morning,

  37. not my followers.

  38. In Matthew 5, 43-48,

  39. Jesus commands us Christians,

  40. His followers,

  41. citizens of His kingdom,

  42. to love your enemy.

  43. Let's look at what Jesus actually says.

  44. Matthew 5, 43-48,

  45. you've heard that it was said,

  46. you shall love your neighbor

  47. and hate your enemy.

  48. But I say to you,

  49. love your enemies

  50. and pray for those who persecute you

  51. so that you may be sons of your Father

  52. who is in heaven.

  53. For He makes His sun rise

  54. on the evil and on the good

  55. and sends rain on the just

  56. and on the unjust.

  57. For if you love those who love you,

  58. what reward do you have?

  59. Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

  60. And if you greet only your brothers,

  61. what more are you doing than others?

  62. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  63. You, therefore, must be perfect

  64. as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  65. I can summarize what Jesus is saying

  66. to Christians in five words.

  67. You must love your enemy.

  68. It's a command.

  69. Jesus is commanding you.

  70. You must love your enemy.

  71. And this morning, I want you to see

  72. five reasons why you must love your enemy.

  73. So here's reason number one.

  74. You must love your enemy

  75. because according to Jesus,

  76. your enemy is actually your neighbor.

  77. In verse 43, Jesus quotes

  78. what the Pharisees,

  79. the religious leaders and teachers

  80. of the day were teaching the people.

  81. They were saying,

  82. look at verse 43,

  83. you shall love your neighbor

  84. and hate your enemy.

  85. That's what they were teaching.

  86. It's a reference back to Leviticus 19,

    Leviticus 19:17–18

  87. verses 17-18.

  88. Love your neighbor as yourself

  89. is what verse 18 closes with.

  90. And what appears to be happening is this,

  91. that the Jewish leaders of the time

  92. understood that word neighbor

  93. to mean just their fellow Jews.

  94. And everybody else fell into

  95. some kind of non-neighbor category.

  96. Do you remember the parable

  97. of the Good Samaritan?

  98. It's one of my favorite parables of Jesus.

  99. It's in Luke 10.

  100. In this parable,

  101. Jesus totally reorients this word neighbor.

  102. There is a lawyer who puts Jesus to the test.

  103. There seems to be a lot of lawyers

  104. putting Jesus to the test

  105. throughout the Gospels.

  106. And he asks Jesus,

  107. what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  108. And Jesus responds by saying,

  109. well, what's written in the law?

  110. The lawyer responds by saying,

  111. in a session,

  112. this is my summary.

  113. Love God with everything you got

  114. and love your neighbor as yourself.

  115. And Jesus replies,

  116. well, that sounds right.

  117. You do that and live.

  118. And then in verse 29,

  119. we see a little kind of the truth

  120. of where this lawyer's heart is.

  121. And he asks,

  122. and who is my neighbor?

  123. In other words,

  124. who am I obligated to love?

  125. And that little verse 29

  126. gives you a glimpse into the mindset

  127. of the Pharisees of Jesus' day.

  128. What they were doing is

  129. they were drawing lines

  130. along all the people around them.

  131. Who is my neighbor?

  132. And if this person is my neighbor,

  133. I'm obligated to love them.

  134. Anybody not,

  135. I'm not obligated to love.

  136. And it's to that question,

  137. who is my neighbor,

  138. that Jesus speaks the parable

  139. of the Good Samaritan.

  140. And ironically,

  141. He makes the hero

  142. in the Good Samaritan

  143. to be a Samaritan,

  144. a Gentile,

  145. whom the Jews hated.

  146. And that Good Samaritan

  147. showed mercy on a beat up Jew

  148. outside of a road in Jerusalem

  149. on the road to Jericho.

  150. That Samaritan,

  151. in that parable,

  152. he did not discriminate.

  153. He did not discriminate

  154. along the lines of race,

  155. ethnicity,

  156. appearance,

  157. gender,

  158. political position,

  159. background.

  160. Background.

  161. The Samaritan saw a beat up Jew

  162. on the side of the road,

  163. saw him as his neighbor.

  164. And then he showed that Jew mercy.

  165. Jesus' point of the parable

  166. of the Good Samaritan

  167. is not just speaking to Jews

  168. and saying,

  169. yes, your Jews are your neighbors.

  170. Jesus is saying,

  171. everybody's your neighbor.

  172. Everyone is your neighbor now.

  173. Nowhere in the Old Testament

  174. is God's people explicitly commanded

  175. to hate their enemies.

  176. Nowhere.

  177. And so what the Pharisees have done

  178. is they limited love your neighbor

  179. to their own people

  180. who look like they do

  181. and eat what they eat,

  182. and then they added to it

  183. and hate your enemy.

  184. There are Scriptures

  185. that can be wrongly used

  186. to justify hating your enemies.

  187. But nowhere is there a command

  188. to hate your enemies.

  189. And so the Pharisees

  190. had added to God's Word.

  191. And were just seeing their fellow Jews

  192. as their neighbors.

  193. They conveniently dropped, too,

  194. if you didn't notice this,

  195. the as yourself.

  196. Love your neighbors

  197. and hate your enemies.

  198. There's no real reference

  199. of how they're to love their neighbors.

  200. So what we see Jesus doing here

  201. in verse 44 is this.

  202. But I say to you,

  203. love your enemies

  204. and pray for those who persecute you.

  205. Jesus is correcting

  206. this wrong teaching of the day.

  207. What were the Pharisees teaching?

  208. Love your neighbor,

  209. hate your enemy.

  210. And Jesus is saying,

  211. no, love your enemy.

  212. And in so saying that,

  213. He's saying,

  214. because your enemy

  215. is your neighbor.

  216. Jesus doesn't give us

  217. this non-neighbor category.

  218. Everyone is our neighbor now.

  219. So, a little while ago,

  220. I asked you to think of a person

  221. that is hostile towards you.

  222. That you would consider an enemy.

  223. Jesus is wanting to help you

  224. this morning.

  225. And help you see this person

  226. who's hostile to you.

  227. Not to ignore the hostility.

  228. But to see them as a neighbor.

  229. A fellow image bearer of God.

  230. And when you begin to see an enemy

  231. as a neighbor,

  232. it starts to change your heart

  233. towards them.

  234. Don't do what the Pharisees have done.

  235. They make a convenient,

  236. compartmentalized approach

  237. to people.

  238. My neighbor and my enemy.

  239. What Jesus does is He says,

  240. no, no, no.

  241. Your enemy is your neighbor.

  242. That's the first reason

  243. why we're to love our enemies.

  244. They're our neighbors.

  245. And we're going to treat them

  246. a certain way.

  247. The second reason

  248. why we are to love our enemies

  249. is what we see

  250. in the latter part of verse 45.

  251. It's because our Heavenly Father

  252. loves His enemies.

  253. We read,

  254. so that you may be sons

  255. of your Father who is in heaven.

  256. For He, your Father in heaven,

  257. makes His Son

  258. rise on the evil

  259. and on the good.

  260. And sends rain on the just

  261. and on the unjust.

  262. Our Heavenly Father

  263. doesn't discriminate

  264. when it comes to

  265. causing the sun to rise

  266. and the rain to fall

  267. on all people.

  268. This is a common grace

  269. of God to all.

  270. God is lovingly causing

  271. the sun to rise

  272. and the rain to fall

  273. both on the evil and the good.

  274. On the unjust and the just.

  275. Out of mercy,

  276. God in His love

  277. treats all people

  278. with kindness

  279. regardless if they fear Him or not.

  280. We've got an amazing God.

  281. He literally causes

  282. the sun to rise

  283. and the rain to fall

  284. on all people

  285. so that they can eat

  286. and live.

  287. He also gets at the scope

  288. and scale of His sovereignty.

  289. He's in control of all things.

  290. This is called common grace.

  291. Out of mercy,

  292. God shows kindness

  293. to even those who oppose Him

  294. so that they can live.

  295. And we learn from Romans 2

  296. and Acts 17

  297. that this common grace,

  298. this common love for all

  299. is intended to lead people

  300. to God.

  301. And the point that Jesus

  302. is making here

  303. is that this common grace

  304. is an outworking

  305. of His indiscriminate love

  306. for all mankind.

  307. He's kind.

  308. He's kind to all.

  309. So here's what Jesus

  310. is getting at.

  311. If God loves His enemies

  312. this way,

  313. so should we.

  314. We should look out

  315. for the general welfare

  316. of our neighbors

  317. which includes our enemies.

  318. And so we read something

  319. like this

  320. in Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  321. the Apostle Paul says

  322. don't take vengeance.

  323. Vengeance is mine

  324. says the Lord.

  325. And then he goes on to say

  326. if you have an enemy

  327. who's hungry,

  328. feed them.

  329. If there's an enemy

  330. who's thirsty,

  331. you give them something

  332. to drink.

  333. He's quoting Proverbs 25

  334. and he says

  335. you'll put kind of coals

  336. on their lap.

  337. But it's also

  338. showing them kindness.

  339. And so vengeance

  340. is in God's hands

  341. so we overcome evil

  342. with good.

  343. good.

  344. But I just got to

  345. remind you

  346. of the guy

  347. who's speaking

  348. these words.

  349. So not only

  350. does God

  351. show His love

  352. for all people

  353. with common grace,

  354. sun and rain,

  355. God has shown

  356. His love

  357. for all people

  358. including

  359. His enemies

  360. with a saving grace.

  361. Jesus and the cross.

  362. And it's the one

  363. who's speaking.

  364. In just a couple

  365. of years,

  366. Jesus,

  367. who is saying

  368. these words,

  369. love your enemies

  370. and pray for those

  371. who persecute you.

  372. In just a couple

  373. of years

  374. from Him saying this,

  375. He's going to be

  376. on a cross.

  377. And do you remember

  378. what He prays

  379. on the cross?

  380. Father,

  381. forgive them

  382. for they do not

  383. know what they do.

  384. Do you know

  385. what He's doing

  386. right there?

  387. He is praying

  388. for His enemies

  389. while dying

  390. for His enemies.

  391. That's Luke 23,

  392. 34.

  393. What we see happening

  394. at the cross

  395. is the single

  396. greatest demonstration

  397. of God's love

  398. the world

  399. has ever seen.

  400. There,

  401. our holy,

  402. loving God

  403. dies

  404. for a sinful,

  405. rebellious people.

  406. God's love

  407. is at the

  408. is the genesis,

  409. the drive

  410. of His saving grace.

  411. Do you remember

  412. John 3, 16?

  413. For God so loved

  414. the world

  415. that He gave

  416. His one and only Son

  417. that whoever believes

  418. in Him

  419. shall not perish

  420. but have eternal life.

  421. Why would the world

  422. be in danger

  423. of perishing

  424. if the world

  425. was not

  426. a composition

  427. of sinners

  428. and rebels?

  429. God's love

  430. demonstrated

  431. by sending

  432. His Son

  433. to die on the cross.

  434. A.J. quoted

  435. from Romans 5, 8

  436. earlier

  437. when he was

  438. talking about

  439. life groups.

  440. But God demonstrates

  441. His own love

  442. towards us

  443. in that while

  444. we were yet

  445. sinners,

  446. Christ,

  447. the Messiah,

  448. King,

  449. died for us.

  450. And in 5, 10,

  451. if there's any question,

  452. Paul talks about

  453. these same sinners

  454. as enemies.

  455. God's demonstrated

  456. His common grace,

  457. His common love

  458. to all mankind

  459. in sending

  460. the sun and the rain

  461. so that people

  462. can live.

  463. But He's demonstrated

  464. His saving grace,

  465. His saving love

  466. very clearly

  467. at the cross

  468. of Jesus Christ

  469. where He gives

  470. spiritual life.

  471. He offers that

  472. to all mankind

  473. His enemies.

  474. Now,

  475. if you have

  476. any question,

  477. you were

  478. God's enemy.

  479. You were

  480. rebelling

  481. against Him.

  482. I was

  483. an enemy

  484. of God.

  485. And despite

  486. my rebellion,

  487. God loved me

  488. and Jesus

  489. died for me

  490. and He died

  491. for you

  492. and He offers

  493. salvation

  494. to all.

  495. This is the kind

  496. of love

  497. our God

  498. loves with.

  499. This is the

  500. wonderful agape

  501. love that we

  502. read about

  503. throughout the

  504. Scriptures.

  505. The agape

  506. love,

  507. that's a Greek

  508. word,

  509. agape.

  510. It's a love

  511. for the

  512. unlovely.

  513. Loving those

  514. who don't deserve

  515. to be loved.

  516. And furthermore,

  517. it's loving

  518. people with

  519. the realization

  520. they're not

  521. going to love

  522. you back

  523. in and of

  524. themselves.

  525. That's the

  526. kind of love

  527. with which God

  528. loves His

  529. enemies.

  530. And so,

  531. we see here

  532. in verse 45,

  533. God loving

  534. His enemies,

  535. both the evil

  536. and the good,

  537. the just

  538. and the unjust,

  539. with a common

  540. grace,

  541. and what I've

  542. sought to show you

  543. this morning

  544. and a saving

  545. grace.

  546. It's the guy

  547. speaking.

  548. We're at least

  549. to love our

  550. enemies with a

  551. common kindness.

  552. Jesus points

  553. to something

  554. very specific.

  555. He says,

  556. pray for those

  557. who persecute you.

  558. You know that

  559. person I ask

  560. you to be

  561. thinking of

  562. at the beginning

  563. of the sermon?

  564. This person

  565. who is a threat

  566. to you?

  567. Who's hostile

  568. to you?

  569. Do you pray

  570. for them?

  571. Do you show

  572. love for them

  573. and praying

  574. for them?

  575. There was a

  576. time years ago

  577. where there

  578. was someone

  579. who was

  580. hurting someone

  581. I loved.

  582. And that

  583. person I saw

  584. as an enemy.

  585. I saw

  586. as an enemy.

  587. I hated

  588. this person

  589. for what

  590. he was

  591. doing.

  592. I did.

  593. And I began

  594. to pray for

  595. them because

  596. of this

  597. command.

  598. And I

  599. began by

  600. praying

  601. what's

  602. called

  603. the

  604. precatory

  605. psalms.

  606. Calling

  607. down God's

  608. wrath on

  609. this person.

  610. But what

  611. this person

  612. was doing

  613. was wrong.

  614. Hurtful.

  615. And over

  616. the course

  617. of months

  618. I started

  619. to hear

  620. my own

  621. prayers.

  622. And I

  623. started to

  624. realize

  625. God I

  626. don't want

  627. this person

  628. damned.

  629. I don't

  630. want them

  631. to be

  632. apart from

  633. you for

  634. eternity.

  635. I don't

  636. want that.

  637. And it was

  638. actually through

  639. my praying

  640. that God

  641. transformed

  642. my heart

  643. from seeing

  644. this person

  645. as an

  646. enemy to

  647. finding myself

  648. praying for

  649. mercy for

  650. this person.

  651. That God

  652. would rescue

  653. this person.

  654. That God

  655. would deliver

  656. this person.

  657. This person

  658. never became

  659. my friend.

  660. But I

  661. began to

  662. love this

  663. person.

  664. are you

  665. praying for

  666. your enemies?

  667. God

  668. is good

  669. for you

  670. as you

  671. pray

  672. for your

  673. enemies.

  674. Pray for

  675. the one

  676. who's your

  677. threat.

  678. And if

  679. they're not

  680. a threat

  681. to you

  682. and a

  683. threat to

  684. somebody

  685. else but

  686. you still

  687. feel anger

  688. towards them,

  689. pray for

  690. them nonetheless.

  691. us.

  692. The second

  693. reason why

  694. we must

  695. love our

  696. enemies is

  697. because our

  698. heavenly father

  699. loves his

  700. enemies and

  701. we were one

  702. of his

  703. enemies.

  704. Reason

  705. number three.

  706. We must

  707. love our

  708. enemies because

  709. we are now

  710. children of

  711. God.

  712. We love our

  713. enemies because

  714. it's who we

  715. are now.

  716. now.

  717. Look at

  718. verse 45,

  719. the beginning

  720. of verse 45.

  721. But I say to

  722. you, love your

  723. enemies and

  724. pray for those

  725. who persecute

  726. you so that

  727. you may be

  728. sons of your

  729. father who is

  730. in heaven.

  731. If Romans 5,

  732. 8, and 10

  733. are true, we

  734. were sinners,

  735. enemies of

  736. God.

  737. We were

  738. once enemies

  739. of God.

  740. We were

  741. hostile to

  742. God.

  743. We were

  744. rebellious.

  745. We were

  746. worshipping

  747. anything but

  748. God.

  749. But God

  750. loved us

  751. anyway.

  752. We were

  753. unlovable and

  754. he loved us.

  755. We had no

  756. interest in

  757. loving him

  758. back and he

  759. loved us.

  760. He sent his

  761. son for us.

  762. And when we

  763. received Christ,

  764. having believed,

  765. God gave us the

  766. right to become

  767. his sons and

  768. daughters.

  769. On the basis

  770. of what Jesus

  771. did on the

  772. cross, he

  773. gave us the

  774. right to become

  775. the children of

  776. his father.

  777. We were once

  778. enemies,

  779. opposed, but

  780. now by God's

  781. grace, we are

  782. children who are

  783. fully accepted

  784. into God's

  785. family, fully,

  786. fully loved.

  787. That's who we

  788. are now.

  789. love.

  790. We've been

  791. given all the

  792. rights and

  793. privileges of

  794. children of God.

  795. We have been

  796. brought into a

  797. new family.

  798. We've been given

  799. a new status.

  800. We've been given

  801. a new nature.

  802. The Spirit of

  803. God comes and

  804. indwells us.

  805. We have new

  806. hearts.

  807. We are now

  808. capable of what

  809. we were never

  810. capable before.

  811. To love like our

  812. Father loves.

  813. So when Jesus

  814. says, love your

  815. enemies and pray

  816. for those who

  817. persecute you so

  818. that you may be

  819. sons of your

  820. Father in heaven,

  821. don't think that

  822. he's saying, love

  823. your enemies in

  824. order to become

  825. sons and daughters.

  826. We cannot earn

  827. the right to

  828. become children of

  829. God.

  830. We receive that as

  831. a gift of God's

  832. grace.

  833. What he's saying

  834. is that our love

  835. for our enemy and

  836. praying for those

  837. who persecute us is

  838. evidence that we

  839. are children of

  840. God.

  841. Sons and

  842. daughters of

  843. God most high.

  844. It's because we're

  845. children of God that

  846. we are able to love

  847. our enemies with the

  848. kind of love our

  849. Father has loved us.

  850. And it's a distinct

  851. family trait.

  852. It sets us apart.

  853. We love as our

  854. Heavenly Father

  855. loves us.

  856. You must love your

  857. enemy because you're

  858. a child of the

  859. Heavenly Father.

  860. Reason number four.

  861. We love our enemies

  862. because this kind of

  863. love sets us apart.

  864. love makes us distinct.

  865. This makes us salt and

  866. light in a decaying and

  867. dark world.

  868. This kind of love is a

  869. witnessing kind of love.

  870. It speaks a word.

  871. God uses our enemies

  872. hatred for us as an

  873. opportunity to advance

  874. His kingdom in the way

  875. we love them.

  876. Look at verses 46 and 47.

  877. It's really kind of

  878. interesting.

  879. He's making a point.

  880. He has four rhetorical

  881. questions here and there's

  882. a point to it all.

  883. Read with me.

  884. For if you love those

  885. who love you, what reward

  886. do you have?

  887. Do not even the tax

  888. collectors do the same?

  889. And if you greet only

  890. your brothers, what more

  891. are you doing than others?

  892. Do not even the Gentiles

  893. do the same?

  894. What is Jesus getting at

  895. here?

  896. What are all these

  897. rhetorical questions

  898. getting at?

  899. Well, He's kind of

  900. saying this.

  901. If you just love those

  902. who love you, what's the

  903. big deal in that?

  904. Everybody else does

  905. that.

  906. The Heavenly Father

  907. doesn't reward that kind

  908. of everyday, common

  909. loving of one another

  910. because you're being

  911. loved back.

  912. That's an easy and

  913. convenient kind of love.

  914. Jesus' point is it's

  915. relatively easy to love

  916. someone who loves you

  917. back.

  918. When someone hates you,

  919. that is the challenge

  920. to love them.

  921. Jesus is saying, hey,

  922. if you love those who

  923. love you, it's nothing

  924. to write home about.

  925. Even the tax collectors

  926. do that.

  927. Who are these tax

  928. collectors?

  929. Well, Jesus is talking

  930. about Jewish tax

  931. collectors.

  932. And in Jesus' days, Jews

  933. did not like Jewish

  934. tax collectors.

  935. And here's why.

  936. They were seen as a kind

  937. of traitor.

  938. A Jewish tax collector

  939. was a representative of

  940. the Roman government.

  941. They were collecting

  942. money for the invaders.

  943. They were fraternizing

  944. with the enemy.

  945. They were not looked well

  946. upon because of that.

  947. And then there's the whole

  948. tax collecting system.

  949. tax collectors were seen

  950. as thieves because the way

  951. that these taxes were

  952. collected was you charge

  953. a little bit for your

  954. service to collect the tax.

  955. So you put a little

  956. surcharge on it.

  957. But the system was such

  958. that extortion was just

  959. shot through it.

  960. And everybody knew it.

  961. So they were seen as

  962. traitors and thieves.

  963. And they were also seen

  964. as unclean because a lot

  965. of their tax collecting

  966. had to do with Gentiles.

  967. They were interacting and

  968. becoming unclean because of

  969. that.

  970. So Jews were kind of put

  971. out because tax collectors

  972. were traitors, thieves,

  973. and unclean.

  974. And so Jesus is saying,

  975. hey, these people you

  976. despise, they love each

  977. other.

  978. What's the big deal?

  979. There's nothing to be

  980. impressed about if you love

  981. each other like that.

  982. In verse 47, he goes in

  983. another direction.

  984. If you greet only your

  985. brothers, what more are you

  986. doing than others?

  987. Do not even the Gentiles do

  988. that?

  989. Hey, if you greet your

  990. brothers, hey, isn't

  991. everybody else greeting

  992. those who look like them

  993. and they like?

  994. Gentiles greet each other

  995. on the street.

  996. What's the big deal?

  997. If you just greet your

  998. brothers, you're just like

  999. the Gentiles.

  1000. What's so distinct

  1001. about that?

1002. By the way, Gentiles were

1003. seen by Jews as being

  1004. perpetually unclean.

  1005. Eating things they

  1006. shouldn't eat.

  1007. Doing things they

  1008. shouldn't do.

  1009. Touching things they

  1010. shouldn't touch.

  1011. They're gross.

1012. And so do you remember

1013. in Acts 10, the story of

  1014. Cornelius who was a

  1015. Gentile?

1016. God calls Peter to share

  1017. the gospel with Cornelius

  1018. in Acts 10.

  1019. We see Peter walking

  1020. into the home of

  1021. Cornelius.

1022. Do you realize what was

  1023. happening right there?

1024. That would have been the

1025. first time Peter, as a Jew,

  1026. would have entered a

  1027. Gentile's house.

1028. Look at verse 28 of

  1029. chapter 10.

  1030. Gentiles were seen as

  1031. unclean.

1032. And so Jesus is saying,

1033. hey, if you're just going

  1034. to greet one another,

1035. hey, the Gentiles who you

  1036. despise, they do that

  1037. too.

  1038. What's the big deal?

  1039. There's nothing distinct

  1040. about that.

1041. The argument here is that

1042. that kind of love, that

  1043. kind of greeting, that's

  1044. common.

  1045. That's normal.

  1046. That's usual.

  1047. Loving those who love

  1048. you, greeting those who

  1049. you like, you're peeps.

  1050. There's nothing unusual

  1051. about that.

  1052. Here's what's unusual.

1053. I think Jesus is being

  1054. very subtle.

1055. But if you, as a child of

  1056. God, love those tax

  1057. collectors who extort you

1058. and greet those Gentiles who

  1059. make you unclean because

  1060. they are your neighbors,

  1061. that's distinctly a

  1062. God-like love.

  1063. That's something to be

  1064. rewarded.

  1065. That's something to be

  1066. commended.

  1067. That's something to write

  1068. home about.

1069. When you love your enemy

1070. as your neighbor, that is

1071. the fulfillment of the law.

1072. We are to love our

  1073. neighbors because it's

  1074. distinctly God-like.

1075. You overcome the evil of

1076. those who hate you with

  1077. good.

  1078. That's Jesus-like.

  1079. When someone insults you

1080. with a hurtful word, you

1081. respond with a word of

  1082. kindness.

1083. You pray for those who are

  1084. hostile to you.

1085. You greet someone who hates

  1086. you on the street.

1087. That, this is all being

1088. salt and light in a

  1089. decaying and dark world.

1090. People take notice of this

1091. kind of love because it's

  1092. uncommon.

  1093. It's abnormal.

  1094. It is unusual.

1095. God even uses our enemies'

  1096. insults and attacks to

1097. further His kingdom and the

1098. way we respond to them.

  1099. That's the upside-down way

  1100. of Jesus.

1101. So Jesus is saying, you

1102. must love your enemy because

1103. it's an opportunity to be

  1104. salt and light.

  1105. It sets you apart.

  1106. It is distinct.

  1107. You're a child so that God

  1108. would get the glory.

  1109. Reason number five.

1110. You must love your enemy

1111. because you are commanded by

  1112. Jesus to be perfect.

  1113. It's Matthew 5.48.

1114. Be perfect as your heavenly

  1115. Father is perfect.

  1116. That word perfect means

  1117. complete.

  1118. Fully mature.

1119. And if you were to read

  1120. Leviticus 19.2, it's that

1121. what God says, be holy for I

  1122. am holy.

1123. When you read Matthew 5.48,

  1124. there's a similar cadence.

1125. Be perfect as your heavenly

  1126. Father is perfect.

1127. Be holy for I am holy.

  1128. There is this holiness

  1129. component to this perfection.

  1130. Moral rightness.

  1131. A righteousness that exceeds

  1132. even the Pharisees.

1133. What I want to help you see

1134. is that verse 48 is the

  1135. concluding verse of this

  1136. entire section that began

  1137. in verse 17.

  1138. Look at verse 17.

1139. Do not think that I have

1140. come to abolish the law or

  1141. the prophets.

1142. I have not come to abolish

1143. them, but to fulfill them.

1144. And then Jesus gives six

1145. examples of how the law is

1146. fulfilled when it comes to

  1147. anger, lust, divorce, oaths,

1148. retaliation, and now love for

  1149. your enemies.

1150. Jesus is showing us through

  1151. this teaching what the

  1152. perfect fulfillment of the

  1153. law looks like.

1154. To be perfect as your

  1155. heavenly Father is perfect.

1156. To be perfect in how you

  1157. perfectly fulfill the law.

1158. It's time to be honest.

1159. Does anybody in the room love

1160. their enemy with a perfect

  1161. God-like love?

  1162. No.

  1163. We don't.

1164. And we all know it, don't we?

1165. None of us can perfectly obey

1166. this perfect fulfillment of the

1167. law and prophets that Jesus has

1168. just laid out for us.

  1169. None of us can.

1170. What are we to do?

1171. This command to be perfect is a

  1172. command to the impossible.

1173. This is out of our reach.

  1174. We can't do it.

1175. How can we do the impossible?

1176. What's impossible for man is possible for God.

1177. What we're unable to do, God has done.

1178. We're unable to do it.

1179. We're unable to do it.

1180. We're unable to do it.

1181. We're unable to do it.

1182. So what are we to do when we are tempted to hate our enemy

1183. instead of love our enemy?

1184. We're to preach the gospel to yourself.

1185. We're to call to your mind your perfect Savior

1186. who is perfecting your faith.

1187. Jesus, God incarnate, is the only human being

1188. that has perfectly lived out this perfect fulfillment

1189. of the law and prophets.

  1190. He's the only one.

  1191. So Jesus never murdered,

1192. and He was never sinfully angry.

1193. Jesus never committed physical adultery,

1194. and He never committed adultery in His heart.

  1195. He never lusted.

  1196. Jesus never divorced,

1197. and you may be saying,

1198. well, He was never married.

  1199. Actually, He is married.

1200. To the bride of Christ, the church.

1201. And He will be faithful to us all the way through.

1202. He will never leave us or forsake us.

1203. When it comes to oaths,

1204. He never spoke a word He didn't keep.

1205. His yes is always yes.

1206. His no is always no.

1207. He perfectly keeps His word.

  1208. He lived out perfectly

  1209. that what He said,

1210. do not resist the evil one,

1211. the one who is evil.

  1212. When He was reviled,

  1213. this is 1 Peter,

  1214. when He was reviled,

1215. He did not revile in return.

  1216. When He suffered,

  1217. He didn't threaten,

  1218. but continued entrusting Himself

1219. to the one who judges justly.

  1220. It's perfect.

1221. And with what we saw this morning,

  1222. He perfectly fulfilled,

  1223. love your enemy

1224. and pray for those who persecute you.

1225. He lovingly died for us

  1226. who was His enemies.

1227. He's praying for them on the cross.

1228. He did what none of us could do

1229. in order to accomplish the impossible.

1230. To make imperfect sinners perfect

  1231. in God's sight.

  1232. In Christ,

  1233. remember,

1234. He is the perfect Savior

1235. and He's the perfecter of our faith.

1236. I want to encourage you just quickly

1237. with a couple things here.

  1238. Do not forget

1239. that Jesus has made perfect

  1240. your record.

  1241. He's made it perfect.

1242. He died for your sins,

  1243. erasing all sin,

1244. and He imputed to you

  1245. His righteousness.

  1246. He justified you.

1247. And He is in the process

  1248. of making us perfect.

  1249. For one sacrifice,

1250. He made perfect for all time

1251. those who are being sanctified.

  1252. in the process

  1253. of being made perfect.

  1254. And there's coming a day

1255. when He will complete His work in us.

  1256. He will perfect it.

1257. We will be completely released

  1258. of all sinful inclinations.

  1259. Unhindered by sin.

  1260. That's when we're glorified.

1261. His perfect work of salvation

1262. is past, present, and future.

1263. He's the perfecter of our faith.

1264. And when we are tempted,

  1265. when we are confronted

1266. with this call to perfection

1267. and we look to ourselves,

  1268. don't go there first.

1269. Go to your perfect Savior.

  1270. He is your confidence

  1271. when we are faced

  1272. with our imperfections.

1273. You have a perfect record.

  1274. He's making you perfect.

  1275. And there's a day

1276. when you will be perfect.

  1277. What ends up happening

1278. is this call to be perfect

1279. as your Heavenly Father is perfect.

  1280. It's a call to trust

  1281. your perfect Savior.

1282. We've looked at five reasons

  1283. this morning

1284. as to why you love your enemy.

  1285. Love your enemy

  1286. because your enemy

  1287. is your neighbor.

1288. That person you thought of,

  1289. that person's your neighbor.

  1290. and your Heavenly Father

  1291. loves His enemies

1292. and you were one of them.

  1293. That's the second reason.

  1294. The third reason is

  1295. you're now a child of God.

1296. You're able to love your enemy.

  1297. The fourth reason was

1298. you can distinctly love your enemy

  1299. with the Father's love.

  1300. It's an opportunity

  1301. to advance the kingdom.

  1302. And the fifth,

1303. you're to love your enemy

  1304. because you've been called

  1305. to be perfect.

  1306. And we obey that

  1307. by first looking

  1308. to our perfect Savior.

  1309. So this morning,

1310. the question you may have

1311. is where do I start?

  1312. I've got an enemy.

  1313. I'm going to walk

  1314. into an office tomorrow

  1315. into hostility.

  1316. What do I do?

  1317. On your way in,

  1318. pray for your enemy.

  1319. That's where to start.

  1320. Let's pray now.

  1321. God in Heaven,

1322. thank You for loving us.

  1323. We were Your enemies

1324. and that did not stop You.

  1325. We were unlovable

1326. and yet You loved us.

1327. You knew we didn't have it

1328. in ourselves to love back,

1329. but You loved us still.

1330. God, would You perfect us?

1331. Would You make us a people

  1332. that when we encounter

  1333. hostility,

1334. we respond in a way

  1335. that pleases You.

  1336. In Jesus' name,

  1337. Amen.
