  1. Well, today is Anniversary Sunday.

  2. We've been three years old as a church.

  3. Three years ago, we, amen.

  4. We had our first public service,

  5. and to commemorate that,

  6. we set aside every first Sunday of October to rejoice.

  7. Well, it was the fall of 2012,

  8. and I was at the tail end of an assessment

  9. by the elders of Crossway Community Church.

  10. Crossway is the church that planted Christ the King Church,

  11. and I went through a year-long assessment

  12. to see if I was fit to do this work,

  13. and as part of that, in that fall,

  14. I was asked to write a BHAG, B-H-A-G,

  15. a big, hairy, audacious goal.

  16. A God-sized goal.

  17. And this is what I wrote.

  18. We read this at every membership class.

  19. The vision of Christ the King Church

  20. is to see the gospel of Jesus Christ

  21. transform every area of our personal lives,

  22. our families, our church, our city, and our world.

  23. It's 1020 a.m. one Sunday in the year 2033.

  24. It's a red light.

  25. As cars come to a stop at the intersection of Sheridan and 60th Street,

  26. they hear the one voice of Christ the King Church

  27. singing, Blessed Assurance,

  28. through the open stained glass windows of their building.

  29. Inside the building, almost all of the 1,000 seats are filled.

  30. Remember, this is a vision.

  31. Dreaming big.

  32. They had to expand the capacity of their building in 2020.

  33. The whole church is standing with hands raised.

  34. There are dark chocolate hands raised.

  35. There are also deeply tanned hands raised.

  36. There are fair and freckled hands raised.

  37. There are some nicely groomed hands that are raised.

  38. There are a smattering of exotic fingernails.

  39. Tattoos on hands are common.

  40. Most of the hands are calloused, strong, and rough.

  41. And as the people sing, standing,

  42. tears gently stream down cheeks as with one voice.

  43. Christ the King Church lifts her praise to God.

  44. No one expected God to do what God has done.

  45. The light turns green.

  46. For the last 20 years,

  47. there's been a pronounced and sustained outpouring of God's spirit

  48. throughout Kenosha's downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

  49. God has spread the people of Christ the King like Levin

  50. throughout the neighborhoods of Uptown, Harbor Park,

  51. Sunnydale, Lincoln Park, Frank, Allendale, Wilson,

  52. even out west of Green Bay Road.

  53. The people of Christ the King Church

  54. reach out with the gospel often and intentionally.

  55. Evangelism usually involves a couple members of Christ the King

  56. inviting some of their friends to come over for a meal

  57. and eventually the topic turns to Jesus.

  58. 477 people have become Christians

  59. and have been integrated into the life of the church

  60. over the last two decades.

  61. It was in 2018 that God finally opened a door

  62. into the African American community.

  63. Shawan Jackson was a co-worker of Mike Purgatelli.

  64. They were on the same work crew for the city's water department

  65. and Mike had been sharing the gospel with Shawan weekly

  66. as they made runs in their blue dump truck.

  67. Finally, God opened Shawan's eyes to see his need for Christ

  68. and after coming to faith in Christ,

  69. Mike brought Shawan to a small group.

  70. They were studying Ephesians together

  71. and that life group warmly welcomed Shawan.

  72. They shared openly about their hardships,

  73. fears, joys, and struggles with sin.

  74. And after about 18 months,

  75. Shawan was able to let down his guard

  76. with people who were not black.

  77. He experienced Christian fellowship with Anglos and Latinos.

  78. He came to realize that he had more in common

  79. with his Anglo and Latino,

  80. these Anglo and Latino sinners saved by grace

  81. than he did with his Frank neighborhood buddies.

  82. Shawan started bringing his longtime friends

  83. from Frank neighborhood to the Christ of King Church

  84. of Sunday service.

  85. Some were convicted of their sin.

  86. They repented and put their trust in Christ.

  87. But most did not.

  88. Shawan continued to grow in the face

  89. of being ridiculed for his devotion to Christ

  90. and the people of Christ the King.

  91. He married Manuela in 2023

  92. and soon they had three beautiful boys.

  93. Shawan never met his dad,

  94. but God provided what he needed.

  95. A handful of godly older men

  96. had been mentoring Shawan since his conversion.

  97. He's now a godly dad.

  98. His boys feared the Lord.

  99. And then from 2024 to 2027,

  100. Shawan participated in Christ the King Church's

  101. leadership development program.

  102. And by the fall of 2028,

  103. Shawan had been nominated to become an elder.

  104. He's formally set in as an elder

  105. of Christ the King Church January of 2029.

  106. He's just started his second three-year term.

  107. God continues to use Shawan

  108. to evangelize the young men of Frank neighborhood.

  109. In fact, he's mentoring three young men

  110. from his neighborhood now.

  111. 2018 was a significant year in the life

  112. of Christ the King Church.

  113. Early in that spring,

  114. Christ the King Church sent out

  115. her first church plant to Waukegan,

  116. El Rey de la Gracia.

  117. Lou, give it to us.

  118. Today, God has grown that church to 215 people.

  119. They meet in Waukegan High School.

  120. They joined the Crossway Association of Churches

  121. in 2021.

  122. Since 2016, Christ the King has been sending teams

  123. across the globe to play a small role

  124. in filling the Great Commission.

  125. Every year since 2016,

  126. Christ the King has sent out a multi-ethnic team

  127. to visit, strengthen, and assist

  128. the international mission partners of the church.

  129. There are strong ties to partners in Myanmar,

  130. Philippines, Brazil, Morocco, India, China,

  131. Georgia, as in the Republic of Georgia,

  132. though the state of Georgia needs missionaries too.

  133. Somalia, France, Ethiopia, and Vietnam.

  134. God has done a mighty work

  135. in uniting the diverse people

  136. of Christ the King Church

  137. into a mature body

  138. whose head is Jesus Christ.

  139. No one spends a lot of time

  140. thinking about what it means

  141. to be ethnically diverse anymore.

  142. Christ the King Church is ethnically

  143. and socioeconomically diverse.

  144. The church reflects the community it's in.

  145. Every dimension of Christ the King Church

  146. is experiencing the transforming

  147. and unifying effect of the gospel.

  148. The children's ministry volunteers

  149. are ethnically diverse.

  150. Worship team, ethnically diverse.

  151. Greeting team, diverse.

  152. Life group leaders and life groups

  153. are ethnically diverse.

  154. Deacons are ethnically diverse.

  155. And of course, the elders of Christ the King Church

  156. are ethnically and socioeconomically diverse.

  157. The diversity is a sign of a greater reality.

  158. The power of the gospel of Jesus Christ

  159. radically changes individuals

  160. as well as a people.

  161. A diverse people living in downtown Kenosha

  162. have been given new identities.

  163. United in Christ,

  164. resulting in a whole new people group.

  165. We are Christ the King Church.

  166. As we were,

  167. the elders of our church

  168. were seeing this day approaching,

  169. we thought it would be good

  170. to rally us around our mission

  171. as a church.

  172. to call to mind why we're here.

  173. Why we do what we do.

  174. And it's our third anniversary this morning.

  175. So we want to refocus us as a church

  176. on our mission as a church.

  177. And to do that,

  178. we're going to take a break from Matthew 6,

  179. and we're going to plop down

  180. right in the middle of Colossians.

  181. Colossians 1, verses 28 and 29.

    Colossians 1:28

  182. And in these two verses,

  183. the Apostle Paul gives a brief

  184. but potent summary

  185. of his gospel ministry.

  186. It's all about Jesus.

  187. It's all about Jesus.

  188. So if you would open up your Bibles

  189. to Colossians 1.

  190. Hear the Word of God.

  191. 1, verses 28 and 29.

  192. Him we proclaim.

  193. Him we proclaim.

  194. Warning everyone and teaching everyone

  195. with all wisdom

  196. that we may present everyone

  197. mature in Christ.

  198. For this I toil.

  199. Struggling with all His energy

  200. that He powerfully works within me.

  201. So as we take our cues

  202. from the Apostle Paul

  203. and Jesus Himself,

  204. we exist as a church

  205. to make known the life-transforming power

  206. of the gospel of Jesus Christ

  207. to all people.

  208. It's all about Jesus.

  209. We're all about Jesus.

  210. And so this morning,

  211. to help you see that,

  212. three points.

  213. Our goal,

  214. our method,

  215. and our strength.

  216. Our goal,

  217. our method,

  218. and our strength.

  219. So let's look at first

  220. our goal.

  221. And you can see our goal

  222. in the second half

  223. of verse 28.

  224. I'll just read verse 28 again.

  225. Him we proclaim,

  226. warning everyone

  227. and teaching everyone

  228. with all wisdom

  229. that we may present

  230. everyone mature

  231. in Christ.

  232. And so as we talk about our goal,

  233. I want you to notice three words.

  234. Mature,

  235. everyone,

  236. and present.

  237. So let's look at this word mature.

  238. The goal of Paul's ministry

  239. was to present everyone

  240. mature in Christ.

  241. You see that little word that?

  242. That,

  243. we may present.

  244. That word,

  245. that,

  246. signifies purpose.

  247. Aim.

  248. Goal.

  249. And our goal

  250. is the same as the Apostle Paul's.

  251. To present

  252. everyone

  253. mature

  254. in Christ.

  255. Now that word mature

  256. comes from a Greek word,

  257. teleon,

  258. which means complete,

  259. fulfilled,

  260. lacking nothing.

  261. One commentator wrote

  262. that this sense of maturity

  263. is in someone

  264. who is so wholeheartedly

  265. devoted to Jesus

  266. that their conduct

  267. is blameless.

  268. Wholehearted devotion.

  269. It's not any kind of maturity

  270. we're talking about here.

  271. This is mature

  272. in Christ.

  273. The goal of Paul's ministry

  274. was to present people

  275. mature

  276. in Christ.

  277. And what that means

  278. is to be Christ-like.

  279. Would you hold your spot

  280. in Colossians 1

  281. and flip over a couple pages

  282. to Ephesians chapter 4?

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  283. I want to see how

  284. Paul talks about this

  285. in another way.

  286. Similar way.

  287. In chapter 4,

  288. verse 11,

  289. we read,

  290. and he gave the apostles,

  291. the prophets,

  292. the evangelists,

  293. the shepherds,

  294. and teachers

  295. to equip the saints

  296. for the work of ministry,

  297. for building up the body.

  298. So God gives leaders

  299. to the church

  300. to equip the church

  301. to build up the church.

  302. gospel ministry

  303. takes place

  304. among all of us.

  305. All of us

  306. are gospel ministers

  307. building the church up.

  308. And then look at verse 13.

  309. Until we all attain

  310. to the unity of the faith

  311. and the knowledge

  312. of the Son of God

  313. to mature manhood.

  314. Same word.

  315. To mature manhood.

  316. And then look at the next clause.

  317. To the measure

  318. of the stature

  319. of the fullness

  320. of Christ.

  321. Our goal

  322. is to present

  323. everyone mature

  324. in Christ

  325. to be like Christ

  326. in all that they are

  327. in every area

  328. of their lives.

  329. It's all about Him.

  330. Paul uses this

  331. maturing Christ language

  332. all throughout his epistles.

  333. But when we turn

  334. to the Gospels,

  335. it's a different

  336. kind of language.

  337. And so instead of

  338. talking about

  339. someone mature in Christ,

  340. the Gospels talk about

  341. being disciples

  342. of Jesus Christ.

  343. Discipleship.

  344. And so when we

  345. talk about it this way,

  346. the goal of our church

  347. is to make

  348. mature disciples

  349. of Jesus.

  350. You remember

  351. Matthew 28.

  352. Luke quoted it

  353. when he was praying

  354. and starting

  355. our worship service.

  356. Jesus commissions

  357. all of His disciples

  358. of all time.

  359. He says,

  360. go make disciples

  361. of the nations.

  362. Make disciples

  363. of me,

  364. Jesus,

  365. of the nations.

  366. Jesus Himself

  367. has commanded us

  368. to be about

  369. this business

  370. of making

  371. mature disciples

  372. of Jesus.

  373. And a disciple

  374. is someone

  375. who is a lifelong

  376. learner of Jesus

  377. and His ways

  378. and a lifelong

  379. follower of Jesus

  380. and His ways.

  381. Not only do they

  382. know who Jesus is

  383. and what they taught,

  384. they learn in order

  385. to obey,

  386. to observe all

  387. that He commanded.

  388. Now,

  389. what does a mature

  390. disciple of Jesus

  391. Christ look like?

  392. Well,

  393. it has a variety

  394. of appearances.

  395. But you remember

  396. we were preaching

  397. through the Sermon

  398. on the Mount.

  399. We've been preaching

  400. through the Sermon

  401. on the Mount

  402. and early in the summer

  403. we were working

  404. through the Beatitudes.

  405. The Beatitudes

  406. are just a wonderful

  407. profile of a mature

  408. follower of Jesus.

  409. Do you remember

  410. where they start?

  411. Blessed are the poor

  412. in spirit.

  413. Humility is a hallmark

  414. of a mature disciple.

  415. It starts all there.

  416. I know it's not

  417. about me,

  418. it's about Him.

  419. Jesus radically

  420. changes a sinner

  421. to think less

  422. of themselves

  423. and more of Him,

  424. more of God.

  425. And so that's

  426. where it all starts.

  427. Poverty of spirit,

  428. spirit,

  429. that is the root

  430. and then

  431. it blossoms

  432. into the beautiful

  433. peacemakers

  434. that we are to be.

  435. Sharing the gospel,

  436. helping people

  437. be at peace with God

  438. through the blood

  439. of Jesus,

  440. be at peace

  441. with each other,

  442. peace within ourselves.

  443. But it doesn't

  444. stop there.

  445. Peacemaking isn't

  446. the end.

  447. Being persecuted

  448. is.

  449. Mature disciples

  450. catch heat

  451. for the name

  452. of Jesus.

  453. That's what we're

  454. called to.

  455. Making mature

  456. disciples

  457. of Jesus Christ.

  458. Now did you notice

  459. the word

  460. everyone?

  461. It's repeated

  462. three times

  463. in verse 28 alone.

  464. So you see,

  465. Him we proclaim

  466. warning everyone

  467. and teaching everyone

  468. with all wisdom

  469. that we may present

  470. everyone

  471. mature

  472. in Christ Jesus.

  473. Now,

  474. when you hear

  475. the word

  476. everyone,

  477. you might start

  478. thinking,

  479. whoa,

  480. are we talking

  481. like seven and a

  482. half billion people

  483. on the face

  484. of the planet

  485. right now?

  486. And in one sense,

  487. yes we are.

  488. Jesus says,

  489. go make disciples

  490. of the nations,

  491. all 7.5 billion

  492. of them.

  493. It's good we're

  494. not in it alone.

  495. God's worldwide

  496. church is carrying

  497. out His mission.

  498. But the way

  499. to think about this

  500. too is to be

  501. considering this.

  502. everyone we come

  503. into contact with

  504. and is responsive

  505. to the gospel,

  506. everyone we present,

  507. we want to present

  508. mature in Christ.

  509. Now,

  510. I want to point out

  511. something very

  512. interesting about this.

  513. Notice in verse 27,

  514. to Him God chose

  515. to make known

  516. how great among

  517. the Gentiles

  518. are the riches

  519. of the glory

  520. of this mystery,

  521. which is Christ in you,

  522. the hope of glory.

  523. Gentiles.

  524. What's that

  525. a reference to?

  526. Well,

  527. a Gentile

  528. is a non-Jew.

  529. Remember,

  530. back in the first century,

  531. a Jew would think

  532. of the world

  533. in two categories,

  534. Jews and everybody else.

  535. Gentiles.

  536. And what Paul

  537. seems to be saying

  538. here is that,

  539. hey,

  540. we proclaim Christ

  541. to everyone,

  542. Jew or Gentile.

  543. we warn everyone,

  544. we teach everyone

  545. in order to present

  546. everyone

  547. mature in Christ.

  548. Now,

  549. let's dial that in

  550. a little bit.

  551. So for us

  552. as a church,

  553. do you know

  554. what that means?

  555. Here's what that means.

  556. Regardless

  557. of someone's ethnicity,

  558. regardless

  559. of someone's gender,

  560. of their socioeconomic status,

  561. of their age,

  562. of their present

  563. marital status,

  564. or their past

  565. marital status,

  566. of their past history

  567. with the law,

  568. our aim

  569. as a church

  570. is to present

  571. everyone

  572. mature in Christ.

  573. All are welcome.

  574. All are welcome.

  575. Everyone we come

  576. into contact with

  577. and is responsive

  578. to the gospel,

  579. we are to present

  580. them mature

  581. in Christ,

  582. to help them

  583. grow in Christ-likeness.

  584. And of course,

  585. there's that word

  586. present.

  587. Paul uses it earlier

  588. in verses 21 and 22

  589. of chapter 1.

  590. He says,

  591. and you who were

  592. once alienated

  593. and hostile in mind

  594. doing evil deeds,

  595. he is now reconciled

  596. in his body of flesh

  597. by his death

  598. in order to present

  599. you holy

  600. and blameless

  601. and above reproach

  602. before him.

  603. And so,

  604. there is a direction

  605. of that word present.

  606. Think of it as

  607. an aimed present,

  608. aimed at God.

  609. Our presenting

  610. everyone mature

  611. in Christ

  612. is towards God.

  613. We present them

  614. to God.

  615. So do you know

  616. what that means?

  617. Our ministry

  618. is an act of worship.

  619. Our proclaiming Christ

  620. and presenting people,

  621. everyone mature

  622. in Christ,

  623. it is worship

  624. of the living God.

  625. We are presenting

  626. them to him.

  627. our ministry

  628. is Godward.

  629. It's for his glory.

  630. It's an act

  631. of worship.

  632. The goal of Paul's

  633. ministry,

  634. and therefore the goal

  635. of our ministry,

  636. is to present

  637. to God

  638. everyone,

  639. everyone we encounter,

  640. everyone who's

  641. responsive to the gospel,

  642. everyone mature

  643. in Christ,

  644. that they become

  645. more and more

  646. like Jesus.

  647. it's all about

  648. him.

  649. That's the goal.

  650. Now let's look

  651. at the method.

  652. Now you may be

  653. asking yourself

  654. the question,

  655. okay,

  656. the goal

  657. is to present

  658. everybody mature

  659. in Jesus.

  660. How do we do that?

  661. How do you get

  662. towards that end?

  663. How does that

  664. take place?

  665. Well,

  666. in the first part

  667. of 28,

  668. we have the answer.

  669. him we proclaim.

  670. Warning everyone

  671. and teaching everyone

  672. with all wisdom

  673. that we may present

  674. everyone mature

  675. in Christ.

  676. How do we present

  677. people mature

  678. in Christ?

  679. We proclaim

  680. Christ to them.

  681. Him we proclaim.

  682. Remember,

  683. it's all about him.

  684. In order for somebody

  685. to become like Christ,

  686. they've got to hear

  687. Christ proclaimed

  688. again and again

  689. and again.

  690. him we proclaim.

  691. Now the one

  692. great need

  693. of everyone

  694. on the planet

  695. is Christ.

  696. Him we proclaim

  697. to everybody.

  698. Think about it

  699. this way.

  700. Think about

  701. a timeline

  702. of a maturing

  703. disciple

  704. of Jesus Christ

  705. Christ.

  706. And it starts

  707. with when

  708. we were

  709. non-Christians.

  710. When we were

  711. non-Christians,

  712. we were dead

  713. to God.

  714. We were living

  715. in darkness.

  716. We had no hope

  717. in the world.

  718. We,

  719. our hearts,

  720. were devoted

  721. to anything

  722. and everything

  723. but God.

  724. That's what

  725. we were living

  726. for.

  727. Do you know

  728. what someone

  729. who's living

  730. in darkness

  731. needs to hear?

  732. They need

  733. to hear

  734. Christ

  735. proclaim to

  736. them.

  737. Jesus is

  738. the light

  739. of the world.

  740. He's the only

  741. one that can

  742. transform a

  743. heart that

  744. is living

  745. for oneself,

  746. transform that

  747. heart to a

  748. heart that is

  749. empowered to

  750. live for the

  751. one true

  752. God.

  753. Only Jesus

  754. can do that.

  755. So what do we

  756. proclaim?

  757. Who do we

  758. proclaim to

  759. non-Christians?

  760. Jesus.

  761. Now let's

  762. say a

  763. non-Christian

  764. hears the

  765. gospel,

  766. God gives

  767. them ears

  768. to hear,

  769. and they

  770. believe.

  771. And at

  772. that moment

  773. their eternity

  774. changes.

  775. A radical

  776. transformation

  777. has taken

  778. place in

  779. one moment.

  780. And now

  781. we have

  782. an immature

  783. disciple of

  784. Jesus.

  785. He's a baby

  786. Christian.

  787. Christian.

  788. What are we

  789. going to

  790. proclaim to

  791. that baby

  792. Christian?

  793. You know,

  794. what you

  795. really want to

  796. start doing

  797. now is reading

  798. every book of

  799. the Bible

  800. twice every

  801. day.

  802. You want to

  803. pray every

  804. minute of

  805. every day,

  806. and if you

  807. do, here's a

  808. list of 900

  809. things to be

  810. praying for.

  811. Our

  812. inclination is

  813. to point people

  814. who just become

  815. Christians to

  816. to-do lists.

  817. You know what

  818. we need to

  819. point them to?

  820. Him we

  821. proclaim.

  822. They need to

  823. learn about

  824. their master.

  825. They learn to

  826. know what he

  827. taught, and

  828. they need to

  829. learn his ways,

  830. and so we're

  831. going to point

  832. them to him

  833. over and

  834. over and

  835. over again.

  836. They're born

  837. again.

  838. They want to

  839. live for Jesus,

  840. right?

  841. And they're

  842. looking at

  843. their lives,

  844. and they're

  845. seeing, oh

  846. man, where

  847. do I start

  848. with Jesus?

  849. Him we

  850. proclaim.

  851. How about

  852. someone who

  853. is no longer

  854. an immature

  855. disciple, but

  856. is a maturing

  857. disciple?

  858. These are the

  859. kind of people

  860. who they have

  861. a split devotion

  862. from time to

  863. time.

  864. There are

  865. significant areas

  866. of their life

  867. that still need

  868. to come under

  869. the lordship of

  870. Jesus.

  871. What are we

  872. going to tell

  873. them?

  874. What are we

  875. going to

  876. proclaim to

  877. them?

  878. Him we

  879. proclaim.

  880. We call them

  881. to Jesus.

  882. We point them

  883. again and

  884. again to

  885. him.

  886. Who he is,

  887. his ways,

  888. and see over

  889. time him do

  890. a work where

  891. every area of

  892. their life comes

  893. under his

  894. reign.

  895. How about a

  896. mature disciple,

  897. a brother or

  898. sister who has

  899. a wholehearted

  900. devotion that

  901. results in a

  902. blameless life?

  903. What do we

  904. proclaim to

  905. them?

  906. Jesus!

  907. Now, a

  908. wholehearted, a

  909. mature disciple,

  910. just to clarify,

  911. they're not

  912. sinless.

  913. Perfection hasn't

  914. reached this

  915. person.

  916. In fact, they

  917. would probably

  918. say something

  919. like this,

  920. you know what,

  921. I am more

  922. aware of God's

  923. holiness than I

  924. ever have been,

  925. and as a result,

  926. I am more aware

  927. of my sinfulness.

  928. It's not the

  929. blatant sins

  930. I did when I

  931. was a little

  932. baby Christian.

  933. These are the

  934. more refined

  935. sins that I

  936. do now, but I

  937. see them as

  938. even more

  939. grievous in

  940. God's sight,

  941. so they're more

  942. aware of their

  943. sin, yet they

  944. would also say,

  945. and I'm more

  946. aware of what

  947. Christ has done

  948. for me.

  949. One of the

  950. distinctive marks

  951. of a mature

  952. Christian is not

  953. that they're just

  954. dwelling on who

  955. Jesus is a lot

  956. of the time.

  957. They are seeking

  958. to make disciples

  959. of Jesus as

  960. well.

  961. They're seeking

  962. to proclaim Him

  963. to others, to

  964. help present

  965. others mature in

  966. Christ.

  967. This book is

  968. Christ revealed.

  969. He reveals Himself

  970. to us through this

  971. book.

  972. It's a living

  973. book.

  974. And so we

  975. help people follow

  976. Jesus by showing

  977. them Jesus through

  978. the book, showing

  979. Him His ways

  980. through the book.

  981. So here's what I'm

  982. trying to tell you.

  983. No matter where

  984. you're at on the

  985. timeline of a

  986. maturing Christian,

  987. whether you're not

  988. a Christian yet, or

  989. you're a mature

  990. Christian, do you

  991. know what you need

  992. to hear most, and

  993. most often?

  994. Christ for you.

  995. That's what you

  996. need to hear.

  997. He's for you.

  998. He loves you.

  999. He died for you.

  1000. He was raised for

  1001. you.

  1002. He's interceding for

  1003. you, and He's

  1004. coming back in order

  1005. to bring you to

  1006. Himself so you can

  1007. see each other face

  1008. to face.

1009. If you just look at

  1010. the first chapter of

  1011. the book of

  1012. Colossians, do you

  1013. know what Paul does

  1014. with these Christian

  1015. Colossians?

  1016. He preaches Christ

  1017. to them.

  1018. Take a look at

  1019. verse 15.

  1020. Talking about the

  1021. preeminence of

  1022. Christ.

1023. He is the image of

  1024. the invisible God,

  1025. the firstborn of all

  1026. creation, for by Him,

  1027. Jesus, all things were

  1028. created in heaven and

  1029. earth, visible and

  1030. invisible, whether

  1031. thrones or dominions or

  1032. rulers or authorities,

  1033. all things were created

  1034. through Jesus and for

  1035. Jesus.

  1036. And He's before all

  1037. things, and in Jesus

  1038. all things hold

  1039. together.

  1040. You know what Paul's

  1041. doing?

  1042. Hey, Colossian

  1043. Christians, here is

  1044. your Savior, Lord of

  1045. creation.

  1046. And He doesn't

  1047. stop there.

  1048. Look more.

  1049. He goes into verse

1050. 18, and He is the

1051. head of the body, the

  1052. church.

  1053. He's the beginning, the

  1054. firstborn from the dead,

  1055. that in everything He

  1056. might be preeminent.

1057. For in Him, Jesus, all

1058. the fullness of God was

  1059. pleased to dwell, and

  1060. through Him, Jesus, to

  1061. reconcile to Himself all

  1062. things, whether on earth

  1063. or in heaven, making

1064. peace by the blood of His,

  1065. Jesus' cross.

1066. And so not only does He

  1067. proclaim Jesus as Lord

  1068. over creation to these

  1069. Colossian Christians, He

  1070. doesn't stop there.

1071. He goes, He's Lord of

  1072. redemption, Lord of the

  1073. church.

1074. He's Lord of it all.

1075. So here we see in the

  1076. book of Colossians, Paul

  1077. proclaiming Christ to

  1078. Christians.

1079. This is who your Savior

  1080. is.

  1081. And if that weren't

  1082. enough, in verses 21

  1083. through 23, Jesus, Paul

  1084. takes, okay, here's Jesus,

1085. Lord of all, and he goes

  1086. very personally, he says,

  1087. He's your Lord.

  1088. Look at verse 21.

1089. And you, who once were

  1090. alienated and hostile in

  1091. mind, doing evil deeds,

1092. He has now reconciled in

1093. His body of flesh by His

1094. blood in order to present

  1095. you holy and blameless,

  1096. above reproach before Him.

1097. Paul is preaching Christ to

  1098. these Colossians, Colossian

  1099. Christians.

1100. He's telling them who Jesus

1101. is and what He has done for

  1102. them.

1103. Do you know that goes by

  1104. another word?

1105. Do you know what it is?

  1106. The gospel.

  1107. He's proclaiming the gospel

  1108. to these Christians.

  1109. Him we proclaim, a.k.a.

  1110. the gospel.

  1111. It's the good news.

1112. And we never outgrow the

  1113. gospel.

1114. We never outgrow the good

  1115. news about Jesus.

1116. It is the old, old story that

  1117. never gets old.

1118. It's new today as it was

  1119. yesterday.

1120. This past week I had lunch

1121. with a brother from the

1122. church and he is a mature

  1123. brother.

1124. I touched base with him this

  1125. morning.

  1126. I'm like, how?

  1127. He's been a Christian for over

  1128. 40 years.

  1129. That's a long time of walking

  1130. with Jesus.

1131. And so here we are having lunch

  1132. together.

1133. And we reach a point where

1134. we're kind of both reflecting on

  1135. past mistakes and past

  1136. hardships.

1137. And it was kind of like out of

  1138. nowhere.

1139. He said something to the effect

1140. of, and I am so grateful that

1141. God has borne all the wrath for

1142. my sin in Christ Jesus.

1143. Here he is, 40 years in the

1144. faith, reveling in the gospel

  1145. work of Jesus.

  1146. Jesus at lunch.

1147. 40 years in the faith, we never

1148. outgrow the work of Jesus at the

  1149. cross.

  1150. We never do.

1151. He's 40 years in the faith and it

1152. happened, he's talking about like

  1153. it happened yesterday.

1154. We never outgrow the good news of

1155. who Jesus is and what he has done

1156. for us, what he's done for you,

1157. what he's done for me.

1158. Him we proclaim to both

  1159. non-Christians and Christians.

  1160. It's all about him.

1161. It's all about who he is and what

  1162. he's done.

1163. That verb translated proclaim, it's

  1164. in the present tense.

1165. And so we're to keep on

  1166. proclaiming.

1167. Him we proclaim and then

  1168. proclaim again.

  1169. We proclaim, proclaim, and

  1170. proclaim.

1171. And this proclamation of Christ

  1172. involves both warning and

  1173. teaching.

  1174. Did you notice that?

1175. Him we proclaim, warning everyone.

  1176. That Greek word translated

1177. warn literally means to place

  1178. something into someone's brain.

  1179. It's a word of admonishment.

1180. It works kind of like this.

1181. Hey man, in light of who Jesus is,

1182. in light of what he's done,

1183. really you don't want to reject him.

  1184. We're proclaiming Christ and

  1185. warning everyone.

1186. In light of who Jesus is and what

  1187. he's done, don't stray from him,

  1188. sister.

1189. In light of who Jesus is and what

1190. he has done for you, brother,

1191. don't grow cold in your

  1192. devotion to him.

1193. A word of warning as we

  1194. proclaim him.

1195. It's part of the proclamation

  1196. of Christ.

1197. And by the way, that word

1198. warning is a present tense

  1199. verb as well.

  1200. We're to continue warning.

1201. It's part of our life together

  1202. as a church.

1203. Part of our love for together

  1204. as a church.

  1205. Helping each other.

1206. But in addition to warning,

1207. we also see there's an ongoing

1208. teaching as part of our

  1209. proclamation of Christ.

  1210. Christ.

1211. That's what we see Paul doing

  1212. in Colossians 1.

1213. Constantly teaching who Jesus is.

  1214. Lord of creation.

  1215. Lord of our redemption.

  1216. Lord of all.

1217. Constantly teaching what he has

  1218. done.

1219. He shed his blood on the cross

1220. in order to make peace between

1221. a holy God and sinful man.

  1222. You.

1223. Constantly teaching what he is

  1224. doing.

1225. Did you know right now

1226. that Jesus is interceding for you

1227. at the right hand of God?

1228. Constantly teaching what he will

  1229. do.

  1230. He's coming back.

1231. And we see throughout the New

1232. Testament in both Paul and in

1233. James that the promise of his

1234. return is to encourage us.

1235. Constantly teaching that his bride,

  1236. the church,

  1237. the church,

  1238. who we are.

  1239. We are he,

1240. the apple of his eye,

  1241. the blood-bought people.

1242. And we're to proclaim him to

  1243. everybody.

1244. Would you look at Colossians 3,

  1245. 16?

1246. This is a command to the

  1247. Colossian church.

  1248. We read,

1249. let the word of Christ,

  1250. the gospel,

  1251. dwell in you richly.

  1252. Teaching and admonishing,

1253. warning one another in all

  1254. wisdom.

1255. Singing psalms and hymns and

  1256. spiritual songs with

  1257. thanksgiving,

  1258. thankfulness in your heart.

1259. We preach Christ to each other

1260. in a variety of ways.

1261. We're to teach them to observe

1262. all that he has commanded.

  1263. So,

  1264. warning everyone and teaching

  1265. everyone both have important

1266. and vital roles in our

  1267. proclaiming Christ to everyone.

1268. God uses it all to bring about

  1269. maturity in his disciples.

1270. Do you know what we do on

  1271. Sunday mornings at our

1272. breakfast that we reach out

  1273. to the community?

1274. Do you know what we do there?

  1275. We preach Christ.

1276. Do you know what we do here

1277. Sunday mornings when we gather

  1278. as a church?

1279. We preach Christ from the

  1280. Bible.

1281. Do you know what the King's

1282. kids are doing right now as

  1283. they're gathered together?

1284. We're preaching Christ to them.

  1285. Do you know what?

1286. It's going to happen in our

  1287. life groups.

1288. Preach Christ to one another.

  1289. In our men's and women's

  1290. Bible studies,

1291. we preach Christ to one

  1292. another.

1293. Do you know what Billy does

1294. through the Gospel of John

  1295. at our Thursday evening

  1296. youth meetings?

1297. He preaches Christ to our

  1298. young people.

1299. As we show acts of mercy,

  1300. we're looking to proclaim

  1301. Him.

  1302. Him we proclaim.

  1303. It's all about Him.

  1304. Our goal?

  1305. Present everyone mature in

  1306. Christ.

1307. Our glorious method is the

  1308. Gospel.

1309. To preach Christ to everyone,

  1310. both non-believers and

  1311. believers.

1312. And on a final note,

1313. let's look at our strength.

  1314. Our strength is Christ

  1315. Himself.

  1316. Christ provides the power

  1317. to be faithful.

  1318. In verse 29,

  1319. for this I toil,

1320. struggling with all His energy

  1321. that He powerfully works

  1322. within me.

  1323. The work of proclaiming

  1324. Jesus,

  1325. this proclaiming Christ to

  1326. everyone,

  1327. warning everyone,

  1328. teaching everyone,

1329. it is not easy work.

  1330. Making disciples of people

  1331. is not easy.

  1332. It's hard work.

  1333. In fact,

1334. if you look up at verse 24,

  1335. Paul writes,

1336. now I rejoice in my

  1337. sufferings for your sake.

  1338. And in my flesh,

1339. I'm filling up what is

  1340. lacking in Christ's

  1341. afflictions.

  1342. Hard work.

  1343. Look at verse down

  1344. at 29 again.

  1345. For this I toil.

  1346. It's a word that means

  1347. to work to exhaustion.

1348. And then the next word,

1349. struggling with all His energy

  1350. that powerfully works

  1351. within me.

1352. And then in verse 1,

1353. for I want you to know

  1354. how great a struggle.

  1355. Those words struggling

  1356. and struggle,

1357. they come from the Greek word

1358. that we get the word

  1359. agony from.

  1360. Agony.

  1361. The work of advancing

  1362. the gospel,

  1363. of proclaiming Christ

  1364. is hard work.

  1365. Rejection.

  1366. Alienation.

  1367. People questioning

  1368. our motives.

  1369. Charges of intolerance.

  1370. Getting labeled

  1371. narrow-minded.

  1372. Not being taken seriously.

1373. Being put on the fringe

  1374. of your family.

  1375. Putting on the fringe

  1376. of your workplace.

  1377. The proclamation of Christ

1378. can be offensive to people.

1379. And then we can be

  1380. assumed upon.

  1381. Taken advantage of.

1382. And then there's the whole

  1383. part of change

  1384. comes so slow

1385. and it can be so

  1386. discouraging.

  1387. And then when you're

  1388. laboring in a church

  1389. and you're serving

  1390. in a church

  1391. and no one seems

  1392. to notice,

  1393. feel underappreciated,

  1394. taken for granted,

1395. it can be hard work.

1396. Not to mention the fact

  1397. that the goal

  1398. of our labor

  1399. to present everyone

  1400. mature in Christ

  1401. is humanly impossible.

1402. What's going to get us through?

  1403. Where do we go?

1404. Well, if you don't know

  1405. this already,

  1406. you're going to need

  1407. to learn it.

1408. And that is only God

  1409. can change a person's heart.

1410. Only God gives the increase.

  1411. Only God brings about

  1412. Christlikeness.

  1413. It's His work

  1414. and it's His power

  1415. that brings it about.

1416. Our mission as a church

  1417. is humanly impossible.

1418. We can't in and of ourselves

  1419. change people's hearts.

  1420. Only He can radically

  1421. change a sinner's heart.

1422. But praise be to God.

  1423. Jesus provides the power

1424. we need to be faithful

1425. to proclaiming Him to all.

  1426. Christ is in us

  1427. to empower us

  1428. in order to present

  1429. everyone mature in Him.

  1430. In verse 29,

  1431. there's a pile up

  1432. of power words.

  1433. For this I toil,

1434. struggling with all His energy

  1435. that He powerfully

  1436. works within me.

  1437. You could translate it,

1438. struggling with all His power

  1439. that He so powerfully

  1440. empowers in me.

  1441. It reminds us of

  1442. our great need

  1443. for His strength

  1444. in this work

  1445. He's called us to.

  1446. We labor

  1447. by the strength

  1448. that He provides.

  1449. Remember John 15?

  1450. Jesus is the vine.

  1451. We are the branches.

  1452. Apart from Him

  1453. we can do nothing

1454. but if we abide in Him

  1455. wholeheartedly

  1456. trusting in Him

  1457. He will bear fruit

  1458. in and through us.

  1459. He's our confidence.

  1460. He's our strength

  1461. in this mission

1462. He has called us to.

  1463. We cannot afford

  1464. to trust ourselves.

1465. It's His power in us.

1466. It's Him dwelling in us.

  1467. Our goal

  1468. present everyone

  1469. mature in Christ.

  1470. Our method

  1471. proclaiming

  1472. gospel Christ

  1473. to everyone

  1474. and our strength

  1475. is Christ Himself.

  1476. On this anniversary Sunday

1477. I just want to remind you

  1478. it's all

  1479. about

  1480. Him.

  1481. God

  1482. thank You so much

  1483. for Colossians 1

  1484. 28 and 29

  1485. thank You so much

  1486. for three years

  1487. as a church

  1488. and God

  1489. if Jesus should tarry

1490. God would You give us

  1491. many more years

  1492. of being

  1493. a gospel witness

  1494. to the non-believers

  1495. and believers

  1496. here in the city

  1497. of Kenosha

  1498. would You make much

  1499. of Yourself

  1500. in and through us

  1501. Jesus

  1502. You are our strength
