  1. Well, if you'd open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 6, we're making our way through the Sermon on the Mount.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  2. And last year, I pre- last year, we were at Matthew last year.

  3. Were we at Matthew last year? Yeah, we were at Matthew last year.

  4. Well, last week I preached a sermon on the Lord's Prayer.

  5. And unfortunately, I ran out of time, so I wasn't able to get to verses 14 and 15.

  6. And so I've heard back from a couple of you this week saying, we were waiting for you to get to verses 14 and 15.

  7. Would you please explain it?

  8. So let me explain it briefly, and then we'll get into this section Jesus talked about on fasting.

  9. Well, in verses 14 and 15, what they are is Jesus elaborating on something from the prayer itself.

  10. And so if you look at back in chapter 6, verse 12,

  11. and forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors,

  12. what Jesus is doing is, having modeled that in how we pray to our God,

  13. he now comes back in verses 14 and 15 and elaborates on it.

  14. He says,

  15. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

  16. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses,

  17. neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

  18. And so that is a sobering word for many people when they hear that.

  19. And it should be.

  20. So this is an elaboration, but it's a warning.

  21. And what is he warning against?

  22. Jesus is warning against a kind of hypocrisy.

  23. A kind of hypocrisy that would be,

  24. I can pray these kinds of prayers,

  25. and I can ask God to forgive me for my sins,

  26. but not be willing to forgive those who've sinned against us.

  27. Now if you want to read a parable in Matthew,

  28. turn to Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  29. We're not going to do it this morning,

  30. but there's this parable in Matthew 18.

  31. It's the parable of the unforgiving servant.

  32. And Jesus is making the same point.

  33. He is warning his followers that they need to forgive as many times as needed.

  34. And so the parable of the unforgiving servant

  35. is a very helpful way of understanding what Jesus is saying here.

  36. So Jesus is giving a warning here to not be hypocritical in our prayer life

  37. when it comes to forgiving others when they've sinned against us.

  38. It's sobering, and it's a call to be self-reflective.

  39. But what we also see is at the beginning of that section in prayer in verse 5,

  40. Jesus starts by saying a warning against the hypocrites.

  41. And so here he closes that section on praying

  42. with another warning about hypocrisy for us.

  43. Well, that's a little brief explanation on that.

  44. In this passage in Matthew 6, 1 through 18,

  45. Jesus talks about generosity,

  46. talks about prayer,

  47. and now he turns to this topic of fasting.

  48. Just a show of hands,

  49. who's heard a sermon on fasting before?

  50. Would you raise your hands?

  51. Oh, that's surprising.

  52. Okay.

  53. All right.

  54. I thought it was going to be a little less than that, actually.

  55. Let me read what Jesus says.

  56. And when you fast,

  57. do not look gloomy like the hypocrites,

  58. for they disfigure their faces

  59. that their fasting may be seen by others.

  60. Truly I say to you,

  61. they have received their reward,

  62. but when you fast,

  63. anoint your head and wash your face

  64. that your fasting may not be seen by others,

  65. but by your Father who is in secret.

  66. And your Father who sees in secret

  67. will reward you.

  68. Fasting is the purposeful forfeiting of food.

  69. Fasting is the purposeful forfeiting of food.

  70. And there are a variety of reasons why

  71. people from all walks of life fast.

  72. People fast because they're having a colonoscopy the next day.

  73. People fast because they simply

  74. don't have enough money

  75. to eat three square meals.

  76. It's a tragic thing.

  77. People fast in order to lose weight really quick.

  78. They really want to squeeze into those pair of jeans.

  79. People fast so that they can compete.

  80. I had a dear friend in high school

  81. who was a top-notch state wrestler.

  82. And the things that he would put his body through

  83. to cut weight in order to compete.

  84. And he would fast.

  85. Why?

  86. To compete.

  87. Why?

  88. To win.

  89. And he was good.

  90. People fast because they're emotionally overwhelmed.

  91. Maybe you've been there.

  92. You are just so overwhelmed by things of life

  93. that the last thing on your to-do list is to eat.

  94. Similarly, people fast because they're preoccupied with a task.

  95. I do this.

  96. You get dialed into something,

  97. and you're hammering it out,

  98. and you forget to eat.

  99. And then there's religious fasting.

  100. The Muslim fast of Ramadan

  101. is one of the five pillars of Islam.

  102. And it's a religious work to win God's approval.

  103. Muslims fast to garner favor with God

  104. to make themselves acceptable to God.

  105. But praise be to our God of the Bible

  106. that only Christ's blood in righteousness

  107. can make a sinner acceptable to God.

  108. And having put our faith in Him,

  109. we are acceptable to God.

  110. Muslims will fast out of a fear of God

  111. in order to win His approval.

  112. We don't.

  113. We don't fear God.

  114. We fast in order to feast on God.

  115. Christians fast from food

  116. in order to feast on God.

  117. And so this morning,

  118. I'm going to give you six tasty morsels of truth

  119. that are designed to whet your appetite

  120. to feast on God through fasting.

  121. Six tasty morsels.

  122. Now, if you read verse 16,

  123. Jesus starts with these words,

  124. and when you pray.

  125. He doesn't start with saying,

  126. and if you pray.

  127. He starts by saying,

  128. and when you pray.

  129. No.

  130. And when you fast.

  131. Sorry about that.

  132. And when you fast.

  133. According to Jesus,

  134. Jesus assumes His followers are going to fast.

  135. fast.

  136. But I'm not sure if we're all there.

  137. I think many of us have never fasted.

  138. And so I don't want to assume

  139. that we're all fasting.

  140. I don't want to assume

  141. that we all know what it means to fast.

  142. And so this morning,

  143. six tasty morsels

  144. to prime your pump,

  145. to whet your appetite,

  146. to feast on God

  147. through fasting.

  148. You ready for tasty morsel number one?

  149. Fasting is a spiritual exercise

  150. with the goal of godliness.

  151. Fasting is a spiritual workout.

  152. We all know the importance

  153. and benefits of physical exercise,

  154. don't we?

  155. My doctor is very interested

  156. in how much I exercise.

  157. Because he's very much interested

  158. in my overall health.

  159. But we all know

  160. that physical exercise,

  161. working out,

  162. isn't limited to physical bodies.

  163. If you would just turn in your Bibles

  164. to 1 Timothy,

  165. just flip over a few pages,

  166. Matthew,

  167. Acts,

  168. General Electric Power Company,

  169. Galatians,

  170. Ephesians,

  171. Philippians,

  172. Colossians,

  173. Thessalonians,

  174. and then you should be in

  175. Timothy.

  176. 1 Timothy 4.

  177. 1 Timothy 4.7,

  178. the Apostle Paul

  179. strongly urges

  180. this young pastor

  181. named Timothy.

  182. And here's what he says.

  183. If you look at halfway through,

  184. he says,

  185. rather,

  186. train yourself

  187. for godliness.

  188. For while bodily training

  189. is of some value,

  190. godliness is of value

  191. in every way

  192. as it holds promise

  193. for the present life

  194. and also

  195. for the life

  196. to come.

  197. And so,

  198. what Paul is saying is,

  199. Timothy,

  200. you really got to

  201. spiritually work out, buddy.

  202. Spiritually work out.

  203. It will result

  204. in spiritual health,

  205. what he calls godliness.

  206. And that godliness

  207. bears fruit

  208. both now

  209. and in eternity.

  210. And then if you look down

  211. at verse 16,

  212. not only is it healthy

  213. for Timothy,

  214. it's going to be healthy

  215. for his congregation.

  216. So,

  217. Paul commands Timothy

  218. to train yourself

  219. for godliness.

  220. And that Greek word

  221. translated train

  222. is where we get

  223. the English word

  224. gymnasium from.

  225. Gymnast.

  226. And when you think

  227. about that,

  228. you probably think of

  229. some kind of gym,

  230. people exercising in it,

  231. training their bodies,

  232. athletes working out.

  233. And so,

  234. literally,

  235. what this would read

  236. is,

  237. but you,

  238. Timothy,

  239. you train yourself

  240. for godliness.

  241. Christians don't

  242. drift into godliness.

  243. Christians purposefully

  244. pursue godliness

  245. like an athlete

  246. trains for an event.

  247. Godliness.

  248. So,

  249. Paul is urging

  250. Timothy to spiritually

  251. work out

  252. so that he experiences

  253. increasing spiritual health,

  254. godliness.

  255. And it benefits him,

  256. his flock,

  257. all to the glory of God.

  258. So,

  259. train yourself

  260. for godliness.

  261. The goal

  262. of a spiritual discipline

  263. like fasting

  264. is godliness

  265. to become more like God.

  266. To be like him

  267. and his character.

  268. To be like Jesus.

  269. And so,

  270. when we bring it back

  271. to Matthew chapter

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  272. 5 and 6,

  273. it'd be like this.

  274. Jesus says in Matthew 5,

  275. 48,

  276. it's a command,

  277. be perfect

  278. as your heavenly

  279. Father is perfect.

  280. perfect.

  281. What he's saying there is,

  282. hey,

  283. train yourself

  284. for godliness.

  285. Train yourself

  286. for perfection.

  287. Train yourself

  288. to become mature.

  289. And so,

  290. as we come full circle

  291. back to Matthew 6,

  292. 1 through 18,

  293. what Jesus is doing here

  294. is he's cautioning

  295. his disciples

  296. in how they practice

  297. their righteousness.

  298. He's saying

  299. how to go about

  300. their spiritual workouts.

  301. Don't go showboating

  302. with your spiritual exercises.

  303. Nowhere does Jesus

  304. forbid giving to the needy.

  305. Nowhere does he forbid

  306. publicly praying.

  307. Nowhere does he forbid fasting.

  308. What he forbids

  309. are acts of piety

  310. that are to be done

  311. to be seen by others.

  312. That's what he's forbidding.

  313. So again and again,

  314. Jesus says,

  315. do your spiritual exercises

  316. for an audience of one.

  317. Your Father who is unseen

  318. and who sees the unseen.

  319. Our pursuit of godliness

  320. through the spiritual disciplines

  321. is first and foremost

  322. for God's eyes only,

  323. which reminds me

  324. of a 1980s hit,

  325. for God's eyes only.

  326. Way back machine.

  327. fasting is one spiritual exercise

  328. to grow in godliness

  329. for the glory of God.

  330. And I just want to remind you again

  331. of those first four words

  332. in verse 16.

  333. And when you fast.

  334. It's not an if.

  335. It's a when.

  336. When you fast,

  337. Jesus assumes his disciples

  338. will train themselves

  339. for godliness

  340. by employing

  341. this particular

  342. spiritual exercise

  343. called fasting.

  344. And what I'm going to tell you

  345. in a little bit

  346. is that fasting

  347. is forfeiting food

  348. to feast on God.

  349. So morsel number one,

  350. fasting is a spiritual exercise.

  351. Morsel number two,

  352. fasting is one of many

  353. spiritual exercises

  354. exercises for a Christian.

  355. There's a bunch

  356. of different exercises

  357. you can do.

  358. I mean, I'm not sure

  359. if you've ever been

  360. to a gym before,

  361. one of those

  362. kind of build your muscle gyms,

  363. but you walk in

  364. and all of a sudden

  365. there's all these

  366. kind of machines

  367. and all these different

  368. ways you can work out

  369. and build your physical health.

  370. I've got some friends

  371. that every week

  372. they get this,

  373. this email goes out

  374. and they are describing

  375. this exercise

  376. they're going to do

  377. and invite everybody

  378. to come and do it.

  379. But the thing is,

  380. these exercises are crazy.

  381. But when they do it,

  382. they do it in order

  383. to benefit

  384. and grow in their

  385. physical health.

  386. The spiritual disciplines,

  387. and this is Donald Whitney

  388. from his 1991 classic

  389. The Spiritual Disciplines,

  390. the spiritual disciplines

  391. are those practices

  392. found in Scripture

  393. that promote

  394. spiritual growth

  395. among believers

  396. in the gospel

  397. of Jesus Christ.

  398. And he goes on

  399. to list ten.

  400. Here, let me just tell you.

  401. Bible,

  402. prayer,

  403. worship,

  404. evangelism,

  405. serving,

  406. stewardship,

  407. fasting,

  408. silence and solitude,

  409. journaling,

  410. learning.

  411. Ten disciplines.

  412. Ten different workouts

  413. for a Christian

  414. to grow in godliness.

  415. It's a great book.

  416. I've got an old version.

  417. It looks like this.

  418. But this past year,

  419. I read another book

  420. on the spiritual disciplines

  421. that I like more.

  422. And it's this book.

  423. It's called

  424. Habits of Grace

  425. by David Mathis.

  426. And I would just strongly

  427. recommend this book.

  428. It's outstanding.

  429. And so,

  430. it's Habits of Grace,

  431. our habits,

  432. His grace.

  433. This is God at work

  434. in us.

  435. And he,

  436. just to give you a taste of it,

  437. he organizes his book

  438. in three categories.

  439. Hear God's voice,

  440. getting Bible in you.

  441. Having his ear,

  442. prayer,

  443. and in that section

  444. includes fasting,

  445. and then belong

  446. to his body.

  447. Spiritual disciplines

  448. of one anothering,

  449. of being together,

  450. all about

  451. growing in godliness.

  452. So,

  453. fasting is one of

  454. many spiritual disciplines.

  455. But,

  456. I want to,

  457. I want to steer you clear

  458. of two mistakes

  459. when it comes to

  460. the spiritual disciplines.

  461. The first mistake

  462. is one of legalism.

  463. And here's the thinking.

  464. It's,

  465. it's thinking that

  466. your right standing

  467. with God

  468. depends upon

  469. your practice

  470. of the disciplines.

  471. It's thinking that

  472. the practice

  473. of

  474. something like fasting

  475. earns us

  476. favor with God.

  477. It does not.

  478. Our

  479. standing

  480. with God

  481. is accomplished

  482. in Jesus alone.

  483. It's only on the basis

  484. of Jesus' blood

  485. and righteousness

  486. imputed to us

  487. by faith

  488. that we're made

  489. right with God.

  490. So,

  491. a spiritual discipline,

  492. fasting,

  493. for example,

  494. is actually

  495. an outworking

  496. of our salvation.

  497. It's not to

  498. earn salvation.

  499. It results

  500. from being

  501. saved.

  502. God's

  503. good works

  504. don't save us,

  505. but we were saved

  506. for good works.

  507. Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  508. 1 through 10.

  509. And so,

  510. reading your Bible,

  511. praying,

  512. giving,

  513. evangelism,

  514. those are all

  515. outworkings

  516. of what God

  517. has already established

  518. in us through Christ.

  519. It's all

  520. to grow

  521. in godliness,

  522. not to win

  523. God's favor.

  524. That's legalism.

  525. The second,

  526. second caution,

  527. the second mistake

  528. is much more subtle.

  529. And I think

  530. that it's the mistake

  531. that many of us make.

  532. It's the self-dependent

  533. spiritual disciplines.

  534. It's thinking

  535. that my growth

  536. in godliness

  537. depends on me.

  538. Now,

  539. Paul does command

  540. Timothy,

  541. train yourself

  542. for godliness.

  543. And so,

  544. we do have

  545. a responsibility,

  546. but God

  547. gives the growth.

  548. Our habits,

  549. His grace.

  550. Now,

  551. in order to help

  552. you understand this,

  553. I want to share

  554. with you an illustration.

  555. An illustration

  556. of oars

  557. and sails.

  558. The difference

  559. between a rowboat

  560. and a sailboat.

  561. I'll never forget,

  562. 20 years ago,

  563. I was mentored

  564. by a man named Thomas,

  565. and he shared this with me,

  566. and I've held on

  567. to it ever since.

  568. When somebody

  569. becomes a Christian,

  570. Christians can think

  571. about the Christian life

  572. as a rowboat.

  573. It's like,

  574. I've got to make progress

  575. in the Christian life,

  576. and I've got to

  577. row this boat.

  578. And so,

  579. hand me the oar

  580. of Bible reading,

  581. and hand me the oar

  582. of prayer

  583. right when you're saved.

  584. I've put my trust

  585. in Jesus

  586. by faith alone,

  587. and now it's on me

  588. to make progress.

  589. And so,

  590. I grab the oar

  591. of Bible reading,

  592. I grab the oar

  593. of prayer,

  594. and I start,

  595. I start pumping

  596. through the water.

  597. Oh yeah,

  598. I'm making progress.

  599. And then someone else

  600. says,

  601. you know,

  602. you should really start

  603. giving some of your money

  604. back to the Lord.

  605. Okay,

  606. alright,

  607. I can work this.

  608. Three oars now,

  609. I'm working it.

  610. I should start fasting.

  611. Okay,

  612. I'm working four oars now.

  613. And then Donald Whitney

  614. comes in and says,

  615. actually,

  616. you've got ten oars,

  617. and so,

  618. I am going to somehow

  619. manage ten,

  620. what's going to happen?

  621. I'm done.

  622. I'm lying in the bottom

  623. of my rowboat

  624. thinking,

  625. what just happened?

  626. The Christian life

  627. is not a rowboat.

  628. Christian life's a sailboat.

  629. And so,

  630. what we're called to

  631. is hoist sails

  632. in order to capture

  633. the movement

  634. of God's Holy Spirit.

  635. And so,

  636. when I read my Bible

  637. in the morning,

  638. I'm raising the sail

  639. so God will act upon me

  640. and move me.

  641. And I raise the sail of prayer.

  642. I raise the sail of fasting.

  643. I raise the sail of evangelism.

  644. I raise the sail of stewardship.

  645. These are all sails

  646. and they're made out

  647. of the same fabric.

  648. Bible.

  649. And the Holy Spirit of God

  650. fills my sails.

  651. Fills your sails.

  652. You know that scene

  653. from Master and Commander

  654. when Captain Jack's

  655. on the front of his boat

  656. and it's blowing

  657. and all the sails are up

  658. and he's just smiling.

  659. When you are,

  660. when God's filling your sails

  661. through the disciplines,

  662. there is great joy.

  663. But when you're trying

  664. to row your boat,

  665. there is just drudgery.

  666. And so,

  667. you know how you can

  668. avoid these mistakes?

  669. You raise your sail

  670. every morning.

  671. Fasting is just one sail.

  672. The difference between the two

  673. is who is powering the boat.

  674. Who's powering the rowboat?

  675. Who's powering the sailboat?

  676. Sign me up for the sailboat.

  677. So,

  678. this second point

  679. I've tried to make here

  680. is fasting

  681. is one of many

  682. spiritual disciplines

  683. and they're not oars.

  684. They are sails.

  685. The third morsel.

  686. Fasting is an act

  687. of humility.

  688. Fasting is an act

  689. of humility.

  690. James 4, 6.

  691. God opposes the proud

  692. but gives grace

  693. to the humble.

  694. When I hoist my sail

  695. in the morning,

  696. it's an act of humility.

  697. I want to be empowered

  698. by God.

  699. Fasting is a self-imposed

  700. forfeiting of a basic need.

  701. And classically,

  702. that basic need

  703. is the need

  704. to eat.

  705. Eat food.

  706. So, fasting

  707. means going without

  708. something good

  709. in order to gain

  710. something great.

  711. We're going to forfeit

  712. food in order

  713. to feast on God.

  714. And so,

  715. all throughout the Bible,

  716. we see people fasting

  717. for different reasons

  718. but the fasting

  719. is always moving

  720. towards God.

  721. It is always

  722. this act of humility

  723. towards God.

  724. Humbly seeking God.

  725. And so,

  726. we see corporate fasts

  727. throughout the Bible.

  728. So,

  729. the nation of Israel

  730. were commanded

  731. by God

  732. to fast

  733. once a year.

  734. This is the command

  735. on their calendar

  736. that wouldn't change.

  737. And that fast

  738. was linked

  739. to the Day of Atonement.

  740. Yom Kippur.

  741. A day in which

  742. a goat lost its life

  743. and its blood

  744. covered the people.

  745. And so,

  746. the people of Israel

  747. would fast

  748. and mourn

  749. their sin

  750. towards God

  751. on the Day of Atonement.

  752. It was a command.

  753. The whole nation did it.

  754. Big corporate fast.

  755. And then,

  756. if you read Jonah,

  757. there's this other kind

  758. of fast.

  759. This city

  760. of Nineveh.

  761. Now,

  762. Jonah was a really

  763. cranky prophet.

  764. Just,

  765. he was cranky.

  766. And so,

  767. he shows up

  768. in the city of Nineveh

  769. and he spoke

  770. out of his crankiness.

  771. He essentially

  772. told this whole city,

  773. walks in,

  774. turn or burn!

  775. And he walks away.

  776. And you know

  777. what God did?

  778. God moved

  779. in those Ninevites.

  780. And they turned.

  781. And you know

  782. what they did?

  783. The king of Nineveh

  784. called a fast

  785. for all people

  786. and animals.

  787. No eating.

  788. No drinking.

  789. We are repenting

  790. before the God

  791. of Jonah

  792. that He would have

  793. mercy on us.

  794. Remember Esther?

  795. Haman is the bad guy

  796. and he wants

  797. to destroy the Jews.

  798. Esther tells Mordecai,

  799. will you call a fast

  800. for three days?

  801. Get all the people

  802. in Susa praying

  803. so that when I go

  804. before the king,

  805. He will give me,

  806. God will give me favor

  807. and I will be able

  808. to be used by Him

  809. to help deliver

  810. God's people

  811. living in Susa.

  812. We see corporate fasts.

  813. And it doesn't stop

  814. with the Old Testament.

  815. It goes in the New Testament.

  816. In Acts 13,

  817. we see churches fasting.

  818. The church in Antioch,

  819. after fasting and praying,

  820. sends out Paul and Silas

  821. on their first missionary journey.

  822. They're fasting and praying

  823. towards gospel advance.

  824. Acts 14, 23,

  825. there's more prayer and fasting

  826. connected to the appointing

  827. of elders in a church.

  828. So we see all this corporate fasting

  829. taking place all throughout Scripture.

  830. We see nations,

  831. we see cities,

  832. we see churches fasting together

  833. towards God.

  834. It's a seeking of God.

  835. And then we see individual fasts as well.

  836. David fasting,

  837. seeking God on behalf of his son

  838. that was born of Bathsheba,

  839. that was born of infidelity.

  840. Do you remember that?

  841. Daniel, in Daniel chapter 9,

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  842. upon reading Jeremiah,

  843. he reads that there's going to be

  844. a 70-year desolation

  845. upon the city of Jerusalem.

  846. And he looks at his calendar

  847. and he's like,

  848. oh man, that's getting close.

  849. And so what does he do?

  850. He fasts and pray.

  851. Confessing the sins of the people,

  852. petitioning God,

  853. oh Lord,

  854. make your face

  855. to shine upon your sanctuary

  856. which is now desolate.

  857. Send forth a remnant God

  858. to get reestablished in Jerusalem.

  859. And of course,

  860. then there's Nehemiah.

  861. When he hears the report

  862. that Jerusalem is in shambles

  863. and the walls are broken,

  864. he responds personally

  865. by fasting and praying for days.

  866. Pleading with God.

  867. Confessing the sins of the people.

  868. asking God to give him success

  869. on behalf of God's people

  870. because remember,

  871. he was a cupbearer of the king.

  872. And of course,

  873. when we turn to the New Testament,

  874. you don't have to go beyond

  875. Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  876. Jesus has himself fasted

  877. for 40 days and 40 nights

  878. in order to be prepared

  879. for being tempted by the devil.

  880. In Matthew 9,

  881. some disciples come up to Jesus

  882. and say,

  883. Jesus,

  884. why aren't your disciples fasting?

  885. And Jesus is like,

  886. I'm the bridegroom.

  887. I'm here.

  888. They won't fast while I'm here.

  889. But when I leave,

  890. you better believe,

  891. they'll fast then.

  892. What's the point

  893. of humbling yourself

  894. through the forfeiting of food?

  895. food?

  896. It's so that you can have

  897. a focused time of seeking God.

  898. You're essentially saying,

  899. Father,

  900. I want to seek you

  901. more than I want to eat.

  902. We forfeit food

  903. in order to seek God's face

  904. and feast on Him.

  905. So fasting

  906. is a humble act

  907. that was morsel number three.

  908. Morsel number four

  909. is fasting

  910. is a feast.

  911. Fasting is a feast.

  912. We forfeit food

  913. in order to feast on God.

  914. When we think about fasting,

  915. I don't know

  916. if you're like me,

  917. but when I think about fasting,

  918. I'm kind of like,

  919. all right,

  920. what am I going to have to give up

  921. and what's going to be the effect?

  922. I really like scrambled eggs.

  923. I really like juicy cheeseburgers.

  924. Mmm,

  925. I don't want to give those up.

  926. And then,

  927. man,

  928. if I go without coffee,

  929. I'll have a headache

  930. and I might be a little cranky,

  931. there's the hunger pain things,

  932. and then there's the food lust.

  933. You know,

  934. if I'm fasting secretly,

  935. I'm watching somebody else eat,

  936. I'm like,

  937. ooh,

  938. juicy cheeseburger.

  939. so we're always aware

  940. of what we have to give up

  941. and the physical effects,

  942. so yes,

  943. fasting means

  944. forfeiting food,

  945. which is not easy,

  946. nor is it fun.

  947. But what makes it all worth it

  948. is the spiritual feast

  949. it allows.

  950. Christians forfeit food

  951. forfeits food

  952. in order to feast

  953. on God.

  954. So let me try to get specific.

  955. let's say you say,

  956. this coming Thursday,

  957. this is,

  958. you're not going Facebook

  959. with this.

  960. This is for your father's eyes

  961. only.

  962. This Thursday,

  963. you're like,

  964. okay,

  965. I'm going to fast.

  966. But you need a feast.

  967. We know what you're going to go without.

  968. What are you going to feast on?

  969. Feast on God's word.

  970. So you're like thinking,

  971. okay,

  972. Thursdays I usually have

  973. ham and cheese sandwiches

  974. and instead of

  975. a ham and cheese lunch,

  976. I'm going to feast

  977. on Ecclesiastes.

  978. I'm going to feast on Proverbs.

  979. I'm going to feast on Hosea

  980. or Romans

  981. or 1 Corinthians

  982. or Jude,

  983. which is a great book.

  984. That's what I'm going to feast on.

  985. Man cannot live by bread alone

  986. but by every word

  987. that proceeds from the mouth of God.

  988. I'm going to feast on that

  989. this Thursday.

  990. I'll let my hunger pains

  991. drive me to finding

  992. my satisfaction

  993. in God's word.

  994. Or maybe it's not feasting

  995. on Ecclesiastes.

  996. You're like,

  997. you know what,

  998. I am just,

  999. this whole fellowship thing

  1000. is new to me.

  1001. I don't know

  1002. what the Bible says

  1003. about one anothering

  1004. and so you just

  1005. pile up

  1006. all the New Testament

  1007. says about one anothering

  1008. and on that Thursday

  1009. you're like,

  1010. I'm feasting on

  1011. what the New Testament

  1012. says about one anothering

1013. and I'm going to let God

  1014. do a satisfying,

  1015. filling work

  1016. in my soul

  1017. over that.

  1018. Or maybe it's joy

1019. in the book of Philippians.

1020. Or maybe it's the Holy Spirit

1021. in the Gospel of John.

  1022. You just camp out

  1023. and you feast

  1024. on God's word.

  1025. So there's one way

  1026. you can feast

  1027. on God

1028. and then there's another way

  1029. you can feast

  1030. on God.

1031. You feast on God's presence

  1032. by communing with Him

  1033. through prayer.

1034. You could do the Lord's prayer.

  1035. We talked about that

  1036. last week.

  1037. Oh, Father,

  1038. I know that I can't

  1039. claim You as Father.

1040. I can only claim You

  1041. as Father

  1042. because You've claimed me

  1043. as Your Son

  1044. by the Son.

  1045. Hallowed be Your name.

  1046. And so your feast

  1047. for Thursday,

  1048. lunch,

  1049. is taking your time

  1050. and praying through

  1051. the Lord's prayer.

  1052. Communing with your God.

1053. Or maybe it's not that.

  1054. Maybe it's you're acutely aware

  1055. of a spiritual need.

  1056. You lack wisdom

  1057. in a particular area.

  1058. You're like,

1059. I don't know if we should move.

  1060. I don't know if we should

  1061. sell our house.

  1062. I don't know if we should

  1063. go from two incomes

  1064. to one income.

  1065. But you know what?

  1066. Here's what I do know.

1067. I'll set aside that Thursday

  1068. in order to just

  1069. go before my God

  1070. and commune with Him

  1071. over.

  1072. That's how important

  1073. it is to me.

  1074. Maybe you're

  1075. gonna,

  1076. you,

  1077. you,

  1078. you,

  1079. there's this one sin

  1080. that's got this headlock

  1081. over you

  1082. and you just can't

  1083. pull out of it.

  1084. Set that Thursday aside

  1085. to,

  1086. to fight,

  1087. to confess,

  1088. to plead,

  1089. to ask God

  1090. to deliver you,

  1091. to weaken

  1092. and strengthen.

  1093. Feast on that.

  1094. Or maybe

  1095. you're just aware

  1096. of marriages

  1097. in crisis

  1098. or children

  1099. who are

  1100. wandering

  1101. spiritually

  1102. or

  1103. you've just been

  1104. so aware

  1105. of this country

  1106. called North Korea

  1107. and you just

  1108. want to spend

  1109. one lunch

  1110. just asking God

  1111. to open up

  1112. this country

  1113. to the gospel

  1114. of Jesus Christ

  1115. and He radically

  1116. changed the whole

  1117. regime.

  1118. You've got a lot

  1119. of options.

  1120. This is no

  1121. little feast.

  1122. You've got a lot

  1123. of options

  1124. to feast on God.

  1125. Fasting is a

  1126. feasting

  1127. on God.

  1128. I hope that's

  1129. whetting your appetite.

  1130. Morsel number five.

  1131. Fasting can get

  1132. hijacked

  1133. by hypocrisy.

  1134. Remember Jesus'

  1135. warning?

  1136. Look at chapter six.

  1137. Beware of practicing

  1138. your righteousness

  1139. before other people

  1140. in order to be

  1141. seen by them.

  1142. He doesn't call it

  1143. hypocrisy there

  1144. but that is what

  1145. it is.

  1146. And then we see

  1147. in verse three.

  1148. Excuse me,

  1149. two.

  1150. Thus when you give

  1151. to the needy

  1152. sound no trumpet

  1153. before you

  1154. as the hypocrites.

  1155. Verse five.

  1156. And when you pray

  1157. you must not be

  1158. like the hypocrites.

  1159. Verse 16.

  1160. And when you fast

  1161. do not look gloomy

  1162. like the hypocrites.

  1163. What's so hypocritical

  1164. about going public

  1165. with your fasting?

  1166. What's so wrong

  1167. about that?

  1168. Well, it's when

  1169. you turn a humble

  1170. seeking of God

  1171. into a prideful

  1172. desire to be seen

  1173. by men.

  1174. That's the hypocrisy.

  1175. And Jesus says

  1176. keep it secret.

  1177. Just do it for

  1178. your father's eyes

  1179. only.

  1180. It's all about

  1181. your motive.

  1182. That's what it

  1183. boils down to.

  1184. Who you are

  1185. fasting for.

  1186. Who you are

  1187. seeking

  1188. by fasting.

  1189. That's what Jesus

  1190. is getting at.

  1191. So faster

  1192. beware.

  1193. Fasting

  1194. can get

  1195. hijacked

  1196. by hypocrisy.

  1197. That was a little

  1198. bit of a bitter

  1199. morsel,

  1200. wasn't it?

  1201. A little bit

  1202. of a sour

  1203. morsel,

  1204. but an important

  1205. one.

  1206. Morsel number

  1207. six.

  1208. Fasting

  1209. doesn't need

  1210. to be intimidating.

  1211. Fasting

  1212. doesn't need

  1213. to be intimidating

  1214. when you realize

  1215. it's a gracious

  1216. feast that awaits.

  1217. remember

  1218. Jesus assumed

  1219. his disciples

  1220. would fast.

  1221. It's not

  1222. if you fast

  1223. but when you

  1224. fast.

  1225. And remember

  1226. we forfeit

  1227. food in order

  1228. to feast

  1229. on God.

  1230. Communion

  1231. with God

  1232. is the goal.

  1233. We're pursuing

  1234. godliness

  1235. through this

  1236. spiritual exercise

  1237. but ultimately

  1238. it is to

  1239. experience

  1240. his presence

  1241. for his glory.

  1242. So let me

  1243. just encourage

  1244. you very

  1245. specifically.

  1246. if you're

  1247. new to the

  1248. whole idea

  1249. of fasting

  1250. start with

  1251. lunch.

  1252. Just start

  1253. with one meal

  1254. and just

  1255. start with

  1256. forfeiting

  1257. the food.

  1258. Enjoy the

  1259. coffee.

  1260. Enjoy the

  1261. orange juice

  1262. but just

  1263. start simple.

  1264. And when

  1265. you start

  1266. make sure

  1267. you plan

  1268. your spiritual

  1269. feast.

  1270. Make sure

  1271. you know

  1272. what you're

  1273. going to do

  1274. when you

  1275. fast.

  1276. fast.

  1277. You've

  1278. got a

  1279. feast

  1280. you're

  1281. going to

  1282. dial up

  1283. a feast

  1284. whether

  1285. that's

  1286. Ecclesiastes

  1287. or praying

  1288. for North

  1289. Korea.

  1290. And when

  1291. you are

  1292. fasting

  1293. let the

  1294. hunger pains

  1295. lead you

  1296. to your

  1297. God.

  1298. Let them

  1299. focus

  1300. your

  1301. feasting

  1302. on

  1303. God.

  1304. Let them

  1305. help you

  1306. to think

  1307. about God's

  1308. word or

  1309. to pray

  1310. about a

  1311. specific

  1312. thing.

  1313. You're

  1314. saying

  1315. I'm

  1316. doing

  1317. this

  1318. because

  1319. I

  1320. want

  1321. to

  1322. bring

  1323. glory

  1324. to

  1325. God.

  1326. Keep

  1327. it on

  1328. the

  1329. down

  1330. low.

  1331. Remember

  1332. this is

  1333. for God's

  1334. eyes

  1335. only.

  1336. And if

  1337. someone

  1338. finds out

  1339. don't

  1340. panic

  1341. like your

  1342. private

  1343. fast has

  1344. now gone

  1345. public

  1346. on

  1347. WikiLeaks.

  1348. Don't

  1349. worry

  1350. about

  1351. that.

  1352. Just

  1353. be

  1354. matter

  1355. of

  1356. fact

  1357. about

  1358. it

  1359. and

  1360. change

  1361. the

  1362. subject

  1363. and

  1364. move

  1365. on.

  1366. Now

  1367. you

  1368. maybe

  1369. notice

  1370. this

  1371. call

  1372. for

  1373. our

  1374. church

  1375. to

  1376. fast

  1377. and

  1378. pray

  1379. on

  1380. November

  1381. 6th.

  1382. Remember

  1383. there's

  1384. precedent

  1385. in our

  1386. Bibles

  1387. to

  1388. pray

  1389. corporately

  1390. but

  1391. more

  1392. importantly

  1393. it's

  1394. why

  1395. we're

  1396. going

  1397. to

  1398. pray.

  1399. We're

  1400. not

  1401. going

  1402. to

  1403. do

  1404. this

  1405. in

  1406. order

  1407. to

  1408. be

  1409. seen

  1410. by

  1411. men.

  1412. We're

  1413. going

  1414. to

  1415. fast

  1416. and

  1417. pray

  1418. together

  1419. on

  1420. November

  1421. 6th

  1422. in

  1423. order

  1424. to

  1425. seek

  1426. God

  1427. together

  1428. for

  1429. wisdom

  1430. and

  1431. the

  1432. welfare

  1433. of

  1434. our

  1435. nation.

  1436. This

  1437. falls

  1438. along

  1439. the

  1440. lines

  1441. of

  1442. Esther

  1443. and

  1444. Nehemiah

  1445. and

  1446. Daniel.

  1447. So

  1448. six

  1449. morsels

  1450. this

  1451. morning.

  1452. I

  1453. hope

  1454. they

  1455. whet

  1456. your

  1457. appetite

  1458. to

  1459. feast

  1460. on

  1461. God

  1462. through

  1463. fasting.

  1464. But

  1465. in

  1466. closing

  1467. I

  1468. want

  1469. to

  1470. remind

  1471. you

  1472. of

  1473. this

  1474. that

  1475. Jesus

  1476. fasted

  1477. for

  1478. you.

  1479. Jesus

  1480. fasted

  1481. that

  1482. we

  1483. could

  1484. feast

  1485. on

  1486. God

  1487. and

  1488. I'm

  1489. not

  1490. talking

  1491. about

  1492. the

  1493. 40

  1494. days

  1495. and

  1496. 40

  1497. nights

  1498. he

  1499. spent

  1500. in

  1501. the

  1502. wilderness

  1503. getting

  1504. ready.

  1505. I'm

  1506. not

  1507. talking

  1508. about

  1509. that.

  1510. He

  1511. was

  1512. faithful.

  1513. That

  1514. was

  1515. essential

  1516. to

  1517. our

  1518. salvation

  1519. but

  1520. I'm

  1521. talking

  1522. about

  1523. another

  1524. kind

  1525. of

  1526. fast

  1527. the

  1528. Son

  1529. of

  1530. God

  1531. conducted

  1532. for

  1533. you.

  1534. He

  1535. gave

  1536. up

  1537. his

  1538. glory.

  1539. He

  1540. fasted

  1541. from

  1542. the

  1543. rightful

  1544. worship

  1545. he

  1546. deserved

  1547. in

  1548. order

  1549. to

  1550. make

  1551. himself

  1552. nothing.

  1553. Taking

  1554. the

  1555. form

  1556. of a

  1557. servant.

  1558. He

  1559. humbled

  1560. himself

  1561. by

  1562. becoming

  1563. obedient

  1564. to the

  1565. point

  1566. of

  1567. death

  1568. so that

  1569. we

  1570. could

  1571. feast

  1572. on

  1573. the

  1574. salvation

  1575. God

  1576. has

  1577. provided.

  1578. He

  1579. lived a

  1580. 33

  1581. year

  1582. fast

  1583. from

  1584. glory

  1585. that

  1586. we

  1587. could

  1588. feast

  1589. forever

  1590. in the

  1591. presence

  1592. of

  1593. God.

  1594. Jesus

  1595. fasted

  1596. that we

  1597. could

  1598. feast

  1599. on

  1600. God.

  1601. Let

  1602. pray.

  1603. God

  1604. in

  1605. heaven

  1606. we

  1607. do

  1608. thank

  1609. you

  1610. so

  1611. much

  1612. for

  1613. your

  1614. word.

  1615. We

  1616. thank

  1617. you

  1618. God

  1619. that

  1620. you

  1621. are

  1622. a

  1623. God

  1624. who

  1625. speaks

  1626. and

  1627. is

  1628. speaking.

  1629. God

  1630. would

  1631. you

  1632. move

  1633. the

  1634. ball

  1635. in

  1636. as

  1637. we

  1638. seek

  1639. to

  1640. follow

  1641. you.

  1642. Would

  1643. you

  1644. help

  1645. us

  1646. to

  1647. take

  1648. these

  1649. steps

  1650. of

  1651. practicing

  1652. our

  1653. righteousness

  1654. in a

  1655. way

  1656. that

  1657. pleases

  1658. you.

  1659. God

  1660. we

  1661. want

  1662. to

  1663. be

  1664. perfect

  1665. as

  1666. you

  1667. are

  1668. perfect

  1669. and

  1670. we

  1671. want

  1672. to

  1673. do

  1674. that

  1675. in

  1676. a

  1677. way

  1678. that's

  1679. pleasing

  1680. to

  1681. you.

  1682. God

  1683. would

  1684. you

  1685. give

  1686. us

  1687. strength

  1688. would

  1689. you

  1690. fill

  1691. our

  1692. sails

  1693. by

  1694. your

  1695. spirit

  1696. for

  1697. the

  1698. glory

  1699. of

  1700. your

  1701. name

  1702. Amen.
