  1. Everybody's got a motto they're living by.

  2. Think of a motto as a flag that you raise every morning.

  3. Maybe it's Carpe Diem, seize the day.

  4. Maybe it's just do it.

  5. Maybe it's Semper Fidelis, always faithful, U.S. Marine Corps.

  6. Well, today, Jesus is going to say,

  7. Oh, dear citizen of my kingdom,

  8. every morning you raise the banner of the golden rule.

  9. You live according to this one rule

  10. which summarizes all I've taught you.

  11. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

  12. This is the banner that flies over us as a church.

  13. This is a banner that flies over us individually

  14. as followers of Jesus.

  15. This is what compels us in our interactions

  16. with the people God brings across our path.

  17. So the golden rule is Jesus Christ's all-encompassing command

  18. to seek the good of everyone.

  19. And we do that by putting ourselves in their place,

  20. seeking their good.

  21. So brothers and sisters,

  22. as citizens of the kingdom,

  23. the golden rule must govern all your relationships.

  24. That's the claim Jesus is making on us this morning.

  25. In order to help you see that,

  26. I want to point to four clarifiers of the golden rule.

  27. The golden rule is a conclusion.

  28. The golden rule is a command.

  29. The golden rule is a call to use your sanctified imagination.

  30. And the golden rule completes,

  31. fulfills the law and the prophets.

  32. And so let me read it for us.

  33. Jesus says,

  34. So whatever you wish that others would do to you,

  35. do also to them,

  36. for this is the law and the prophets.

  37. This rule governs all of our relationships as Christians.

  38. And so let's get into this first clarifying point.

  39. The golden rule is a conclusion.

  40. Do you see the word so in verse 12?

  41. It's the first word of the sentence.

  42. The first word of the golden rule.

  43. So.

  44. So whatever in the ESV.

  45. So in everything,

  46. says the NIV.

  47. So.

  48. And so you may be sitting there like,

  49. Hey, yo, hey, so.

  50. So what?

  51. So, so what?

  52. So what's the big deal about so?

  53. Well, insert here

  54. that wonderful after school special

  55. conjunction junction.

  56. You know what?

  57. Conjunction junction.

  58. What's your function?

  59. Hooking up words, phrases, and clauses.

  60. So that word so is a conjunction.

  61. It's connecting two things.

  62. What are, what's that word connecting?

  63. It's connecting all of the body on the Sermon on the Mount,

  64. what Jesus has been talking about,

  65. with this one sentence in verse 12.

  66. It's connecting them.

  67. It's making a conclusion.

  68. That's why that so is there.

  69. It's a conjunction.

  70. It's a conjunction.

  71. This conclusion that Jesus draws from his sermon.

  72. He's saying,

  73. So whatever you do,

  74. whatever you wish that others would do to you,

  75. do also to them,

  76. for this is the law and the prophets.

  77. This conclusion is a summary of the entire sermon.

  78. And so here's what this means for us.

  79. It's, it's,

  80. think about the golden rule as a cliff notes

  81. for the Sermon on the Mount.

  82. You can just bring it wherever you want.

  83. And so let's just say that you're tempted,

  84. you're really ticked off at somebody,

  85. and you want to,

  86. you're like murderous intent in your heart towards them,

  87. and you just want to cut them to pieces with your words,

  88. and something in the back of your mind says,

  89. you know what,

  90. I probably shouldn't do that as a citizen of the kingdom.

  91. In fact,

  92. I think that Jesus said something about that in the Sermon on the Mount,

  93. but I don't know where.

  94. Go golden at that point.

  95. Go golden.

  96. Be thinking,

  97. okay,

  98. if,

  99. if someone were angry with me,

  100. how would I want to be treated by that person?

  101. And then I'm going to treat them that way.

  102. That's how you go golden.

  103. It summarizes the entire sermon.

  104. It's,

  105. it's this,

  106. this little sentence that gets a ton done for a citizen of the kingdom.

  107. Someone does you wrong,

  108. and you want to retaliate.

  109. You want an eye for an eye,

  110. and a tooth for a tooth.

  111. And you start thinking,

  112. oh,

  113. you know what,

  114. Jesus probably said something in Matthew.

  115. I don't remember where he said that,

  116. but I can go golden.

  117. I can apply the golden rule,

  118. because it summarizes everything he said.

  119. So how would I want to be treated?

  120. If someone wronged me,

  121. if I wronged someone,

  122. how would I want to be treated at that point?

  123. And I'm going to do that unto this person.

  124. If you're tempted to judge another believer,

  125. another person,

  126. if you can't remember what Jesus said in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  127. go golden.

  128. Do unto that person what you would want them to do,

  129. unto you are on safe,

  130. golden ground.

  131. Jesus is giving us a summary of the entire Sermon on the Mount.

  132. It's his,

  133. it's a conclusion he's drawing.

  134. And what he's basically saying is,

  135. put yourself in another person's place,

  136. and then ask yourself how you would want to be treated,

  137. and then you go and treat that person that way.

  138. So the golden rule of the kingdom

  139. is this versatile summary that Jesus gives us

  140. that we can really apply in any situation with any other person.

  141. It's absolutely brilliant.

  142. Jesus is setting us up to live for the kingdom.

  143. You can call this a kingdom code of ethics in one sentence.

  144. J.C. Ryle,

  145. a pastor from a bygone area.

  146. I think he was English,

  147. and I would try to use my English accent,

  148. which ends up coming off as an Australian accent,

  149. so I won't do it.

  150. He says this,

  151. the golden rule,

  152. it settles a hundred difficult points,

  153. which in a world like this

  154. are continually arising between man and man.

  155. It prevents the necessity

  156. of laying down endless little rules

  157. for our conduct in specific cases.

  158. It frees us.

  159. We can bring the golden rule

  160. into any relationship.

  161. It's a versatile summary command

  162. that can be applied

  163. to any relationship

  164. you are encountering right now.

  165. It also goes beyond.

  166. Let's say that you're having an interaction

  167. with somebody,

  168. and nowhere in the Bible

  169. does it address

  170. this particular kind of interaction.

  171. Go golden.

  172. Do unto that person

  173. as you would want them to do to you.

  174. What this means

  175. is that because this is a conclusion,

  176. we cannot snip it

  177. from the rest of the Sermon on the Mount.

  178. We can't take the golden rule in isolation.

  179. It's vitally connected

  180. to the rest of the Sermon on the Mount.

  181. Tell me,

  182. do you recognize these words

  183. from our nation's history?

  184. Fourscore and seven years ago,

  185. our fathers brought forth

  186. on this continent

  187. a new nation conceived in liberty

  188. and dedicated to the proposition

  189. that all men are created equal.

  190. Remember where that's from?

  191. The Gettysburg Address.

  192. Abraham Lincoln.

  193. Four-minute speech,

  194. and here's how he ended it.

  195. Now,

  196. if we just took that last concluding remark

  197. by President Lincoln in isolation,

  198. it would be somewhat silly

  199. because that concluding remark

  200. is driven by,

  201. it is empowered by,

  202. there's force behind it

  203. from the rest of the speech.

  204. The rest of the speech

  205. drives that last sentence

  206. that President Lincoln made.

  207. You cannot take the golden rule

  208. in isolation

  209. because the entirety

  210. of the Sermon on the Mount

  211. drives with force

  212. the golden rule

  213. which concludes it.

  214. So the golden rule

  215. provides a very potent summary

  216. of kingdom ethics

  217. and we are to live

  218. every day

  219. according to the golden rule.

  220. So we can put it this way.

  221. Do you want to live

  222. in light of the Sermon on the Mount?

  223. Live according to the golden rule.

  224. That's what Jesus is giving us here.

  225. Now at this point,

  226. I want to ask you a probing question.

  227. Do you have a relationship

  228. right now with someone

  229. that needs the golden rule applied?

  230. Are you in relationship

  231. with someone that's just waiting

  232. for you to think about them

  233. in a kingdom way?

  234. I do.

  235. I'm guessing everyone

  236. in the room does.

  237. So the golden rule

  238. is a concluding summary

  239. of this greatest sermon

  240. ever preached

  241. by the greatest man

  242. that ever walked

  243. the face of the earth,

  244. Jesus.

  245. Point two.

  246. The golden rule

  247. is a command.

  248. It's a command

  249. from the lips

  250. of our king.

  251. So what we see

  252. happening in verse 12

  253. is that Jesus,

  254. our king,

  255. commands us,

  256. his 21st century disciples,

  257. to relate to others

  258. in a certain way.

  259. To do to others

  260. what we would want them

  261. to do to us.

  262. He commands us

  263. to live

  264. according to the golden rule.

  265. Now,

  266. I realize

  267. that the golden rule

  268. gets thrown around a lot.

  269. It can sometimes

  270. be thought of

  271. as a golden recommendation

  272. or a golden suggestion

  273. or a golden idea.

  274. But for citizens

  275. of the kingdom,

  276. it is a golden rule,

  277. a golden command.

  278. I mean,

  279. just think of the one

  280. speaking the words.

  281. Jesus has a unique

  282. authority.

  283. He's God's anointed one,

  284. the Messiah,

  285. the one of whom

  286. the Old Testament law

  287. and prophets

  288. pointed to

  289. who would come

  290. and establish

  291. God's kingdom,

  292. God's saving reign

  293. on earth.

  294. He is Emmanuel.

  295. He is God with us.

  296. And as God

  297. in the flesh,

  298. Jesus speaks

  299. with an authority

  300. unlike any other.

  301. Just look down

  302. to verses 28 and 29

  303. of chapter 7.

  304. If you were there

  305. when Jesus was preaching

  306. this sermon

  307. on the hillside,

  308. you would be surrounded

  309. by people doing this.

  310. And when Jesus

  311. finished these sayings,

  312. the crowds were astonished

  313. at his teaching

  314. for he was teaching them

  315. as one who had

  316. authority

  317. and not as their scribes.

  318. This is the guy

  319. that spoke of

  320. like this

  321. in Matthew 6.

  322. You've heard that

  323. it was said,

  324. but I say.

  325. Jesus speaks

  326. with the force

  327. of divine authority.

  328. He spoke that way

  329. then

  330. and he's speaking

  331. that way

  332. this morning

  333. here

  334. to us.

  335. the golden rule

  336. is a command.

  337. Now,

  338. if you look back

  339. at 712,

  340. here's where the command

  341. actually shows up.

  342. So whatever you wish

  343. that others would do

  344. to you,

  345. we haven't hit

  346. the command yet.

  347. So whatever you wish

  348. that others would do

  349. to you,

  350. do also to them.

  351. The command

  352. is that word do.

  353. Do also to them

  354. for this is the law

  355. and the prophets.

  356. Do to them.

  357. You've got to

  358. see that do.

  359. You've got to feel it

  360. as packing

  361. a punch

  362. of the Messiah.

  363. Authority

  364. right there.

  365. Do this.

  366. It's not a recommendation.

  367. It's not a suggestion.

  368. It's a command.

  369. A command from the lips

  370. of our king.

  371. And this command

  372. from the lips

  373. of our king

  374. concerns

  375. others.

  376. Do

  377. also

  378. to them.

  379. So here's what's

  380. going on so far.

  381. Jesus,

  382. our king,

  383. is commanding

  384. us as disciples

  385. to do something

  386. to them.

  387. He doesn't

  388. elaborate

  389. on who

  390. they are.

  391. He just calls

  392. them

  393. them.

  394. So he's talking

  395. about people.

  396. But if you look

  397. at the beginning

  398. of 712,

  399. we get a little

  400. bit more clarity.

  401. So whatever

  402. you wish

  403. that others

  404. would do

  405. to you,

  406. do also

  407. to them.

  408. So it's people

  409. we're in

  410. relationship

  411. with.

  412. And that word

  413. others

  414. comes from a word

  415. that we get

  416. the word

  417. anthropology

  418. from.

  419. Just a general

  420. word meaning

  421. mankind,

  422. all men.

  423. He's not

  424. very specific.

  425. He's purposefully

  426. generic.

  427. Because Jesus

  428. is being

  429. hypothetical.

  430. He's saying

  431. anyone

  432. anyone,

  433. anyone,

  434. whatever you

  435. wish that

  436. others,

  437. whoever,

  438. anyone that

  439. crosses your

  440. path,

  441. whatever you

  442. wish that

  443. they would

  444. do to you,

  445. do also

  446. to them.

  447. And I know

  448. what you may

  449. be kind of

  450. experiencing

  451. right now

  452. when you

  453. encounter a

  454. general word

  455. like them

  456. or others,

  457. it lacks

  458. some specificity.

  459. and what

  460. that means,

  461. what can

  462. happen then

  463. is it's

  464. possible for

  465. us to be

  466. all,

  467. okay,

  468. that's a

  469. good general

  470. rule to

  471. live by.

  472. And we

  473. don't take

  474. it the next

  475. step.

  476. We just

  477. live and

  478. are content

  479. with the

  480. general kind

  481. of vague

  482. word them

  483. and others.

  484. And what I

  485. want to help

  486. you do right

  487. now is go

  488. from them

  489. and others

  490. to concrete

  491. people.

  492. So I

  493. haven't,

  494. I realize

  495. I haven't

  496. yet fully

  497. unpacked what

  498. we are to

  499. do to them,

  500. but I want

  501. to just take a

  502. minute here and

  503. linger a little

  504. bit more on

  505. them.

  506. Who is

  507. them?

  508. Well,

  509. we are to

  510. live out the

  511. golden rule to

  512. real people

  513. in real

  514. time.

  515. Husbands,

  516. you are to

  517. live according

  518. to the golden

  519. rule with

  520. your wives

  521. and wives

  522. with your

  523. husbands.

  524. Parents,

  525. you are to

  526. live out the

  527. golden rule

  528. with your

  529. children.

  530. And children,

  531. you are to

  532. live out the

  533. golden rule

  534. with your

  535. parents.

  536. Brothers and

  537. sisters,

  538. Jesus is

  539. calling you to

  540. live the golden

  541. rule with

  542. each other.

  543. Miracles do

  544. happen.

  545. Extended

  546. family,

  547. in-laws,

  548. even exes,

  549. we are to

  550. live the golden

  551. rule towards.

  552. Classmates and

  553. teachers,

  554. governing

  555. authorities,

  556. supervisors at

  557. work,

  558. people you

  559. oversee,

  560. workmates,

  561. teammates,

  562. coaches,

  563. fellow performers,

  564. orchestra,

  565. thespians,

  566. anyone.

  567. Specific people.

  568. Your neighbor

  569. next door to

  570. you.

  571. What is to

  572. govern your

  573. relationship with

  574. them?

  575. The golden

  576. rule.

  577. It's the

  578. code of the

  579. kingdom.

  580. With all of

  581. his authority,

  582. Jesus is

  583. saying,

  584. you do to

  585. others as

  586. you would

  587. want them to

  588. do to you.

  589. This is a

  590. hallmark of

  591. my kingdom.

  592. I want you to

  593. advance my

  594. kingdom one

  595. golden rule

  596. opportunity at a

  597. time.

  598. now, here's

  599. what I'd like

  600. you to do

  601. this morning.

  602. Pick

  603. somebody.

  604. Pick

  605. someone.

  606. A person

  607. in your

  608. life who

  609. you know

  610. God would

  611. want you

  612. to pursue

  613. the golden

  614. rule with.

  615. Pick

  616. someone.

  617. Now, don't

  618. make the mistake

  619. of thinking that

  620. the golden rule,

  621. because it

  622. concerns others,

  623. is just to be

  624. limited to kind

  625. of a horizontal

  626. relationship.

  627. We treat

  628. others according

  629. to the golden

  630. rule because

  631. Jesus commands

  632. it.

  633. We love

  634. others this

  635. way because we

  636. love our king

  637. and seek to

  638. obey all that

  639. he commanded.

  640. And so, if I

  641. were to ask

  642. you, well, why

  643. would you want

  644. to pursue the

  645. golden rule with

  646. your, this

  647. person?

  648. And you say,

  649. well, you know

  650. what?

  651. I really would

  652. like peace in

  653. our relationship.

  654. I would say, me

  655. too.

  656. I hope that's

  657. the case, but

  658. are there any

  659. other reasons why

  660. you would pursue

  661. the golden rule?

  662. And if you were

  663. to say something

  664. to the extent

  665. that, well,

  666. ultimately, the

  667. reason why I'm

  668. going to live

  669. according to the

  670. golden rule with

  671. this person is

  672. to please my

  673. king, is to

  674. obey what he

  675. requires, is to

  676. do what's good

  677. and pleasing in

  678. his sight because

  679. he commands it

  680. out to me, you're

  681. in a good

  682. spot.

  683. Ultimately, the

  684. golden rule is

  685. something that we

  686. obey.

  687. We live the

  688. golden rule with

  689. others in order to

  690. obey our king.

  691. It's all ultimately

  692. about Jesus.

  693. These aren't

  694. suggestions.

  695. This is not a

  696. recommendation.

  697. This is not a

  698. good idea.

  699. idea.

  700. This is a

  701. command.

  702. We are to do

  703. this to them.

  704. We are to treat

  705. them as we would

  706. want them to

  707. treat us.

  708. Okay, so I've

  709. sought to establish

  710. so far that the

  711. golden rule is a

  712. summary conclusion

  713. and that it's a

  714. command.

  715. It's all about

  716. Jesus, but right

  717. now you may be

  718. asking a question

  719. like this.

  720. Okay, I buy it,

  721. like, okay, I buy

  722. it.

  723. But come on, let's

  724. get down to the

  725. nitty-gritty.

  726. How am I supposed

  727. to do this?

  728. Well, the golden

  729. rule is a call to

  730. use your imagination

  731. for the good of

  732. others.

  733. It's how we do

  734. it.

  735. The golden rule is

  736. technically what's

  737. called a conditional

  738. clause, which means

  739. this.

  740. Remember that command,

  741. do also to them?

  742. It doesn't mean much

  743. until you realize what

  744. Jesus says right in

  745. front of it gives it

  746. its meaning.

  747. So let's look at

  748. verse 12 again.

  749. So whatever you wish

  750. that others would do

  751. to you, do also to

  752. them.

  753. Do that.

  754. Whatever you wish

  755. that others would do

  756. to you, you do to

  757. them.

  758. That's what we do.

  759. So what does Jesus

  760. say?

  761. Treat others the way

  762. you would want to be

  763. treated.

  764. Jesus is wanting

  765. to use us to

  766. bless those people

  767. he has placed us

  768. among.

  769. He wants us to

  770. advance his kingdom

  771. one relationship at a

  772. time by living out

  773. the golden rule.

  774. Let's take a little

  775. bit closer look at

  776. what Jesus is saying

  777. here.

  778. Jesus is saying

  779. put yourself in the

  780. shoes of other people.

  781. Now, you need to

  782. realize that in order

  783. to do that, people

  784. need a reversing of

  785. their natural way of

  786. thinking.

  787. The kingdom of God

  788. is all about people.

  789. The saving reign of

  790. Jesus is all about

  791. people.

  792. And so it makes, it

  793. should not be a

  794. surprise to you that

  795. the command above all

  796. is a command of how

  797. we relate to others.

  798. Jesus is calling us to

  799. a certain way of

  800. thinking.

  801. A reversing of the

  802. natural flow of

  803. thinking in a sinner's

  804. mind.

  805. Naturally, we approach

  806. relationships with a

  807. kind of earthly

  808. thinking that goes

  809. like this.

  810. Well, what can I get

  811. from that?

  812. What can I get from

  813. her?

  814. What can I get from

  815. him?

  816. What can I get from

  817. this situation?

  818. But Jesus is

  819. commanding a new

  820. kingdom approach to

  821. relationships that

  822. requires a new

  823. kingdom way of

  824. thinking.

  825. And it's not what

  826. can I get?

  827. It is what can I

  828. give?

  829. What can I give?

  830. I remember my dad

  831. telling me when I was

  832. a young man, Mike,

  833. there are two kinds

  834. of people in the

  835. world.

  836. There are takers and

  837. there are givers.

  838. You be a giver,

  839. Mike.

  840. Jesus is saying on a

  841. grander scale, as my

  842. citizens of my

  843. kingdom, we seek to

  844. do good to others.

  845. We give.

  846. Now, in order for

  847. this reversing of

  848. thinking to take

  849. place, it requires a

  850. miraculous feat of

  851. divine engineering.

  852. I'm not sure if you

  853. guys know this, but up

  854. until 1900, the

  855. Chicago River ran

  856. through Chicago and

  857. emptied into Lake

  858. Michigan.

  859. And it was causing

  860. all sorts of problems

  861. for the city of

  862. Chicago.

  863. And so someone got

  864. the great idea, well,

  865. why don't we just

  866. reverse the flow of

  867. the river?

  868. So in 1900, through a

  869. real miraculous feat

  870. of civil engineering,

  871. the flow of the

  872. Chicago River was

  873. reversed.

  874. Instead of flowing

  875. flowing into Lake

  876. Michigan, it flowed

  877. out of Lake

  878. Michigan.

  879. And it had quite

  880. the effect.

  881. All of us have a

  882. default thought

  883. flow.

  884. A default thought

  885. flow that falls

  886. into this what can

  887. I get kind of

  888. thinking.

  889. But when a sinner

  890. comes to Christ in

  891. repentance and faith,

  892. God begins a

  893. miraculous feat of

  894. divine engineering.

  895. He begins to

  896. reverse the flow of

  897. our thoughts from

  898. what can I get to

  899. what can I give.

  900. He radically

  901. reorientates our

  902. heart from

  903. ourselves to

  904. Him.

  905. And when our

  906. hearts are living

  907. for Him, we are

  908. going to want to do

  909. good to our

  910. neighbors.

  911. When we love God,

  912. we will want to

  913. love our neighbors.

  914. Matthew 22.

  915. And that's what

  916. Jesus is getting

  917. at here.

  918. Jesus is calling

  919. us to a kingdom

  920. way of thinking.

  921. This way of

  922. thinking begins at

  923. our conversions, but

  924. then is strengthened

  925. day after day,

  926. morning after

  927. morning, as we

  928. seep our minds in

  929. God's Word and pray

  930. and pray and pray.

  931. Hallowed be

  932. Your name.

  933. Your kingdom come.

  934. Your will be done.

  935. Oh, Father, I'm

  936. asking, I'm

  937. seeking, I'm

  938. praying, I'm

  939. knocking, I'm

  940. coming after You,

  941. I'm pursuing this.

  942. I want to think

  943. like a kingdom

  944. citizen.

  945. I want to love

  946. others as You

  947. would call me to.

  948. Help me, Father,

  949. with this.

  950. And as we seek

  951. Him and trust

  952. Him, He

  953. strengthens the

  954. flow.

  955. He gives us the

  956. grace we need to

  957. live the way He's

  958. calling us to

  959. live.

  960. And so this

  961. divine

  962. engineering of

  963. changing the flow

  964. of our thoughts is

  965. a work of God

  966. radically changes

  967. us.

  968. Let's take this

  969. another step.

  970. Now that we've

  971. talked about this

  972. reversal of our

  973. thinking, that we

  974. move from thinking

  975. of ourselves to

  976. thinking of others,

  977. then what?

  978. How are we to

  979. live out the

  980. golden rule with

  981. others?

  982. How are we to

  983. do whatever you

  984. wish that others

  985. would do to you,

  986. do also to them?

  987. How do we do

  988. that?

  989. Well, this is where

  990. you employ your

  991. sanctified imagination.

  992. You've got to think

  993. different.

  994. You've got to think

  995. about people

  996. different.

  997. And here's how it

  998. works.

  999. When there's this

  1000. reversing of

  1001. heart from me

  1002. to others, we

  1003. employ our

  1004. sanctified

  1005. imagination to

  1006. put ourselves in the

  1007. shoes of others.

  1008. white guy living in

  1009. Kenosha.

  1010. It doesn't really

  1011. take a lot of

  1012. imagination to do

  1013. that because it's

  1014. built into me.

  1015. But when I'm

  1016. confronted with

  1017. someone who's

  1018. unlike me, who's

  1019. not a white

  1020. middle class male,

  1021. then I'm

  1022. challenged in my

  1023. imagination.

  1024. But I want to

  1025. imagine.

  1026. I want to

  1027. imagine what it's

1028. like to grow up in

  1029. Frank neighborhood

  1030. as a black male.

  1031. I want to put

  1032. myself in his

  1033. shoes.

  1034. do unto others

  1035. as you would

  1036. have them do

  1037. unto you.

  1038. I want to

  1039. understand.

  1040. I want to

  1041. imagine what

  1042. it is like

  1043. to live

  1044. to live

  1045. under the

  1046. poverty level.

  1047. I want to

  1048. understand what

  1049. it's like to

  1050. live as a

  1051. homeless woman

  1052. in Kenosha

  1053. when it's

  1054. December and

  1055. the temperature's

  1056. dropping.

  1057. I want to

  1058. understand what

  1059. it's like to

  1060. live as a

  1061. white 30

  1062. year old mom

  1063. of three.

  1064. I want to

  1065. understand that.

  1066. I want to

  1067. put myself in

  1068. her shoes.

  1069. That's where

  1070. your imagination

  1071. comes in.

  1072. It is

  1073. potent.

  1074. Because when

  1075. you start putting

  1076. yourself in the

  1077. shoes of others,

  1078. do you know

  1079. what happens?

  1080. You begin to

  1081. dignify that

  1082. person.

  1083. You begin to

  1084. realize, oh,

  1085. this person is

  1086. of tremendous

  1087. worth in God's

  1088. eyes.

  1089. They are an

  1090. image bearer

  1091. of God

  1092. regardless of

  1093. their gender,

  1094. regardless of

  1095. their race,

  1096. their sexual

  1097. orientation,

  1098. regardless of

  1099. their socioeconomic

  1100. status.

  1101. They are an

  1102. image bearer

  1103. and therefore

  1104. they have

  1105. intrinsic worth.

  1106. And I will

  1107. dignify them

  1108. because of

  1109. that.

  1110. And so when I

  1111. start thinking

  1112. that way and

  1113. you start thinking

  1114. that way,

  1115. we're going

  1116. golden.

  1117. Golden.

  1118. but it doesn't

  1119. end there.

  1120. You move from

  1121. dignifying someone

  1122. through your

  1123. imagination to

  1124. then identifying

  1125. with someone in

  1126. your imagination.

  1127. Oh, what would it

1128. be like to grow up

  1129. in the Wilson

  1130. neighborhood if I

  1131. was a 13-year-old

  1132. black young man?

  1133. What would that be

  1134. like?

  1135. What is it like

  1136. during the

  1137. summertime when

  1138. I'm hanging out

  1139. with my friends

  1140. and black and

  1141. whites are just

  1142. cruising around

  1143. our neighborhood

  1144. all the time?

  1145. What effect

  1146. would that have

  1147. on me?

  1148. I start to

  1149. identify.

  1150. And when I

  1151. start to identify

  1152. with someone,

  1153. I begin to

  1154. empathize with

  1155. them.

  1156. I start to

  1157. feel for them.

  1158. I'm moved

  1159. by that.

  1160. Dignify.

  1161. Identify.

  1162. Empathize.

  1163. D-I-E.

  1164. Dignify.

  1165. Identify.

  1166. Empathize.

  1167. In order for

  1168. me to get

  1169. outside of

  1170. myself,

  1171. I've got to

  1172. die to

  1173. myself.

  1174. I've got to

  1175. dignify.

  1176. I've got to

  1177. identify.

  1178. I've got to

  1179. empathize.

  1180. And when that

  1181. falls into

  1182. place,

  1183. that compassion

  1184. compels me

  1185. to do

  1186. also to

  1187. them.

  1188. It drives

  1189. me.

  1190. This just

  1191. doesn't happen

  1192. when you're

  1193. eating your

  1194. cereal in the

  1195. morning.

  1196. You've got to

  1197. give this

  1198. stuff time.

  1199. You've got to

  1200. actually let

  1201. yourself enter

  1202. into somebody's

  1203. else experience.

  1204. You've got to

  1205. be thoughtful,

  1206. intentional.

  1207. You may not

  1208. want to feel

  1209. what you will

  1210. feel, but you

  1211. step in.

  1212. You, by faith,

  1213. Lord Jesus,

  1214. help me to

  1215. identify.

  1216. Jesus isn't

  1217. calling us to

  1218. something here

  1219. something here

  1220. that he

  1221. himself didn't

  1222. do.

  1223. If there's

  1224. anybody that

  1225. lived the

  1226. golden rule,

  1227. it's him.

  1228. He dignified

  1229. us.

  1230. Were we

  1231. sinners?

  1232. Oh, yeah.

  1233. Would that

  1234. stop him from

  1235. doing something?

  1236. No.

  1237. We were

  1238. valuable in his

  1239. eyes because we

  1240. are his image

  1241. bearers.

  1242. God's

  1243. eyes.

  1244. He

  1245. and he

  1246. actually

  1247. stepped into

  1248. our shoes

  1249. by becoming

  1250. a man.

  1251. Dignified.

  1252. He identified

  1253. with us.

  1254. He walked

  1255. this planet

  1256. for 33

  1257. years.

  1258. He knows

  1259. everything that

  1260. we've experienced

  1261. firsthand.

  1262. He is a

  1263. sympathetic high

  1264. priest.

  1265. priest.

  1266. He empathizes

  1267. with us.

  1268. Remember at the

  1269. end of Matthew

  1270. 9, Jesus is

  1271. walking around

  1272. and he sees

  1273. these people

  1274. who are harassed

  1275. and helpless

  1276. like sheep

  1277. without a

  1278. shepherd and

  1279. he out of

  1280. compassion moves.

  1281. He had

  1282. compassion on

  1283. them.

  1284. Where did that

  1285. go?

  1286. Oh, he died.

  1287. He went all

  1288. the way for

  1289. us.

  1290. He lived

  1291. out the

  1292. golden rule

  1293. on a

  1294. blood red

  1295. cross

  1296. for us.

  1297. We've got a

  1298. king who's

  1299. walked it.

  1300. He's calling

  1301. us to something

  1302. he himself has

  1303. done.

  1304. He knows

  1305. the golden

  1306. rule firsthand.

  1307. In fact,

  1308. you are here

  1309. this morning

  1310. because he

  1311. lived the

  1312. golden rule

  1313. towards you.

  1314. Another way

  1315. you can sum

  1316. up the

  1317. golden rule

  1318. to do

  1319. unto others

  1320. as you

  1321. would have

  1322. them do

  1323. unto you

  1324. is to

  1325. love your

  1326. neighbor as

  1327. yourself.

  1328. Now,

  1329. we talked

  1330. about this

  1331. call to use

  1332. our imagination

  1333. for the good

  1334. of others.

  1335. It is a

  1336. God glorifying

  1337. good.

  1338. But I've got

  1339. to be honest

  1340. with you

  1341. about something.

  1342. There's no

  1343. promise of

  1344. reciprocity.

  1345. There's no

  1346. promise when

  1347. you move

  1348. towards someone

  1349. out of a

  1350. heart to

  1351. obey the

  1352. golden rule

  1353. that it's

  1354. going to

  1355. come back

  1356. at you

  1357. in the

  1358. same way.

  1359. Jesus

  1360. isn't saying

  1361. here,

  1362. hey,

  1363. you scratch

  1364. their back,

  1365. they'll scratch

  1366. yours.

  1367. He's not

  1368. saying that.

  1369. This isn't

  1370. some kind

  1371. of utilitarian

  1372. social engineering

  1373. Jesus has

  1374. got going

  1375. on here.

  1376. No,

  1377. he says

  1378. this.

  1379. He says,

  1380. you love

  1381. these people,

  1382. you put

  1383. yourself in

  1384. their shoes,

  1385. you feel

  1386. what they're

  1387. feeling,

  1388. and you

  1389. move to

  1390. them,

  1391. you do

  1392. good to

  1393. them,

  1394. without

  1395. expecting

  1396. anything

  1397. back.

  1398. let me

  1399. ask you

  1400. a question.

  1401. When you

  1402. start using

  1403. your imagination

  1404. this way out

  1405. of obedience

  1406. to your

  1407. king,

  1408. you start

  1409. approaching

  1410. people this

  1411. way in

  1412. order to

  1413. advance

  1414. his kingdom,

  1415. why would

  1416. you do

  1417. this?

  1418. Why would

  1419. you put

  1420. yourself in

  1421. someone else's

  1422. shoes if

  1423. you have

  1424. no personal

  1425. gain from

  1426. it?

  1427. Why would

  1428. you pursue

  1429. someone without

  1430. any promise

  1431. of benefit?

  1432. it?

  1433. Well,

  1434. earlier I

  1435. made the

  1436. case,

  1437. well,

  1438. it's a

  1439. command,

  1440. you obey

  1441. Jesus,

  1442. that's

  1443. enough.

  1444. But

  1445. Jesus

  1446. doesn't

  1447. limit it

  1448. there.

  1449. Look what

  1450. he says.

  1451. So

  1452. whatever you

  1453. wish that

  1454. others would

  1455. do to

  1456. you,

  1457. do also

  1458. to them

  1459. for,

  1460. means

  1461. reason,

  1462. for this

  1463. is the

  1464. law

  1465. and the

  1466. prophets.

  1467. prophets.

  1468. The golden

  1469. rule fulfills

  1470. the law

  1471. and the

  1472. prophets.

  1473. It

  1474. completes the

  1475. law and

  1476. the prophets.

  1477. Not only does

  1478. the golden

  1479. rule conclude

  1480. the sermon,

  1481. not only is

  1482. it a command,

  1483. not only is

  1484. it a call to

  1485. use our

  1486. sanctified

  1487. imaginations

  1488. for other

  1489. people's goods,

  1490. it fulfills

  1491. the law

  1492. and the

  1493. prophets.

  1494. prophets.

  1495. In other

  1496. words,

  1497. it's a

  1498. summary of

  1499. all of

  1500. God's

  1501. will revealed

  1502. in the

  1503. Old Testament.

  1504. Let me

  1505. remind you of

  1506. Jesus' opening

  1507. words at the

  1508. body of

  1509. his sermon

  1510. in Matthew

  1511. 5,

  1512. 17.

  1513. Would you

  1514. turn there

  1515. with me?

  1516. Jesus

  1517. says,

  1518. Do not

  1519. think that

  1520. I have

  1521. come to

  1522. abolish

  1523. the law

  1524. or the

  1525. prophets.

  1526. I have

  1527. not come

  1528. to abolish

  1529. them,

  1530. but to

  1531. fulfill

  1532. them.

  1533. For

  1534. truly I

  1535. say to

  1536. you,

  1537. until

  1538. heaven and

  1539. earth

  1540. pass away,

  1541. not one

  1542. iota,

  1543. not a

  1544. dot,

  1545. will pass

  1546. from the

  1547. law until

  1548. all is

  1549. accomplished.

  1550. Jesus

  1551. came to

  1552. fulfill the

  1553. law and

  1554. the prophets.

  1555. And we

  1556. can ask the

  1557. question,

  1558. well how did

  1559. you do

  1560. that,

  1561. Jesus?

  1562. And there

  1563. are three

  1564. ways he

  1565. did it.

  1566. First

  1567. one is

  1568. this.

  1569. He

  1570. fulfilled

  1571. the

  1572. prophecies

  1573. in the

  1574. prophets

  1575. about the

  1576. coming

  1577. Messiah.

  1578. This

  1579. child

  1580. born to

  1581. us,

  1582. whose

  1583. government

  1584. would be

  1585. on his

  1586. shoulders,

  1587. that his

  1588. reign would

  1589. never end,

  1590. he would

  1591. sit on the

  1592. throne of

  1593. David.

  1594. Isaiah

  1595. 9, 6,

  1596. and 7,

  1597. that's

  1598. talking about

  1599. Jesus.

  1600. And he

  1601. fulfilled it.

  1602. He fulfilled

  1603. the law and

  1604. the prophets

  1605. by being the

  1606. Messiah.

  1607. That's one

  1608. way.

  1609. Another way that

  1610. he fulfilled the

  1611. law and the

  1612. prophets is in

  1613. his teaching.

  1614. He

  1615. clarified the

  1616. true meaning

  1617. of the law

  1618. and the

  1619. prophets.

  1620. That's what

  1621. Matthew 6,

  1622. you've heard that

  1623. I would

  1624. said,

  1625. but I

  1626. say to

  1627. you six

  1628. times over

  1629. again.

  1630. He is

  1631. fulfilling the

  1632. true meaning

  1633. of the law

  1634. and the

  1635. prophets.

  1636. And finally,

  1637. he fulfilled

  1638. all the

  1639. requirements of

  1640. the law and

  1641. the prophets

  1642. by living a

  1643. perfect,

  1644. sinless

  1645. life.

  1646. He

  1647. lived out

  1648. what he

  1649. laid out

  1650. in the

  1651. Sermon on

  1652. the Mount.

  1653. Jesus

  1654. fulfilled the

  1655. law and the

  1656. prophets by

  1657. obeying the

  1658. true meaning

  1659. of the law

  1660. and prophets

  1661. every moment

  1662. of every

  1663. day,

  1664. of every

  1665. week,

  1666. of every

  1667. year of

  1668. his 33

  1669. years.

  1670. Perfectly.

  1671. Here's what

  1672. this means.

  1673. Jesus is the

  1674. golden rule

  1675. incarnate.

  1676. That's what

  1677. that means.

  1678. He lived

  1679. it out.

  1680. Jesus not

  1681. just commanded

  1682. it.

  1683. He did.

  1684. He didn't

  1685. just model

  1686. it.

  1687. He did

  1688. that.

  1689. Jesus,

  1690. by dying

  1691. on the

  1692. cross,

  1693. the golden

  1694. rule on

  1695. the blood

  1696. red cross,

  1697. by dying

  1698. on the

  1699. cross for

  1700. us,

  1701. he makes

  1702. the golden

  1703. rule possible

  1704. for us to

  1705. actually live.

  1706. As new

  1707. creations,

  1708. born of the

  1709. spirit,

  1710. we are now

  1711. able to live

  1712. out the

  1713. golden rule.

  1714. and not

  1715. only are we

  1716. able to,

  1717. he commands

  1718. it.

  1719. He calls

  1720. us to

  1721. it.

  1722. So,

  1723. Jesus,

  1724. the Messiah,

  1725. fulfills the

  1726. law and the

  1727. prophets.

  1728. Jesus, the

  1729. teacher,

  1730. fulfills the

  1731. law and the

  1732. prophets.

  1733. And Jesus,

  1734. the perfect

  1735. human,

  1736. fulfills the

  1737. law and the

  1738. prophets.

  1739. prophets.

  1740. And he did

  1741. it all so

  1742. that we

  1743. could live

  1744. out the

  1745. golden rule

  1746. with others.

  1747. And when we

  1748. do,

  1749. God's

  1750. kingdom is

  1751. advanced.

  1752. This morning,

  1753. I sought to

  1754. show you that

  1755. the golden rule

  1756. is the conclusion

  1757. of the body

  1758. of the Sermon

  1759. on the Mount.

  1760. that the

  1761. golden rule is

  1762. a command from

  1763. the lips of

  1764. our king.

  1765. That the

  1766. golden rule is

  1767. a call to

  1768. use our

  1769. imagination for

  1770. the good of

  1771. others.

  1772. It's a call to

  1773. die, to

  1774. dignify, to

  1775. identify, to

  1776. empathize with

  1777. others.

  1778. And then

  1779. finally, the

  1780. golden rule

  1781. completes the

  1782. law and the

  1783. prophets.

  1784. prophets.

  1785. When we

  1786. live out the

  1787. golden rule,

  1788. we please

  1789. our heavenly

  1790. father and

  1791. the kingdom

  1792. of Jesus is

  1793. advanced.

  1794. So this

  1795. morning, we've

  1796. lifted up a

  1797. banner over our

  1798. church.

  1799. The banner of

  1800. the golden rule.

  1801. And I just

  1802. want to let you

  1803. know that banner

  1804. flies.

  1805. It flies off

  1806. the blood

  1807. red cross

  1808. of Jesus.

  1809. He made it

  1810. possible.

  1811. And he calls

  1812. us to it.

  1813. Let's pray.

  1814. God in

  1815. heaven,

  1816. Father,

  1817. we just

  1818. confess that

  1819. we do not

  1820. live the

  1821. golden rule

  1822. day to day,

  1823. hour by hour,

  1824. but we want

  1825. to.

  1826. God, would

  1827. you give us

  1828. the grace for

  1829. the balance

  1830. of this day

  1831. to do unto

  1832. others as we

  1833. would have

  1834. them do to

  1835. us.

  1836. That we

  1837. would love

  1838. our neighbors

  1839. as ourselves.

  1840. And God, we

  1841. would ask that

  1842. through our

  1843. humble,

  1844. broken steps

  1845. of obedience

  1846. that you

  1847. would advance

  1848. your kingdom.

  1849. Let your

  1850. kingdom come.

  1851. Let your

  1852. will be done

  1853. on earth

  1854. as it is

  1855. in heaven.

  1856. In Jesus'

  1857. name,

  1858. amen.

  1859. Amen.

  1860. Amen.

  1861. Thank you.
