  1. Everybody's building.

  2. Every person on the face of the earth is building.

  3. We're all builders.

  4. We're all building.

  5. A person builds a life.

  6. And a person builds a life one decision at a time.

  7. And each decision that someone makes

  8. is based upon what they believe to be true.

  9. In Matthew 5, 6, and 7,

  10. Jesus lays out the Sermon on the Mount.

  11. This is what is true, he says.

  12. And this morning, we come to the close of the Sermon on the Mount.

  13. We're following Jesus' lead here,

  14. and we're bringing our study of the Sermon on the Mount to an end.

  15. And what Jesus does in the Sermon on the Mount,

  16. at the end of the Sermon on the Mount,

  17. is he brings his listeners to a point of decision.

  18. The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus making clear

  19. what God truly means in the Old Testament law and the prophets.

  20. And one of the effects is when he walks us through again and again,

  21. you've heard this say, but I say, again and again and again,

  22. it brings us to an end to ourselves.

  23. We come to a point and say,

  24. I cannot do this 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  25. In Matthew 5, 48, if you just look in your Bibles there,

  26. Jesus says, be perfect as your Father in Heaven is perfect.

  27. It's a call to perfection.

  28. Anybody there?

  29. Jesus very skillfully brings us to a point

  30. where we've got to hold up our hands,

  31. and we've got to say something like,

  32. there is no way I can do this.

  33. There's no way that, hey, I might not murder somebody,

  34. but to not be sinfully angry with somebody,

  35. I can't do that 24-7.

  36. I can't avoid lust all the time.

  37. I can't love my enemy all the time.

  38. In the Sermon on the Mount,

  39. Jesus raises the standard beyond what any of us can do.

  40. He fulfills the true meaning of the law.

  41. And so what the Sermon on the Mount does

  42. is it actually exposes our spiritual bankruptcy.

  43. It shows that we're poor in spirit.

  44. It shows that the only one

  45. who fulfilled the perfect requirements

  46. of the law and the prophets that Jesus lays out

  47. is the one who's preaching the sermon.

  48. He's the only one who lived the Sermon on the Mount perfectly.

  49. And so what Jesus is doing through this Sermon on the Mount

  50. is bringing us to a point where we come to an end of ourselves.

  51. I can't do this.

  52. But he's also bringing us to a point of decision.

  53. What are you going to do?

  54. And so Jesus wants us to see that

  55. we don't have it in and of ourselves

  56. to live out the Sermon on the Mount

  57. but where we say,

  58. I can't,

  59. he always says,

  60. I can't.

  61. The Sermon on the Mount brings us to Jesus.

  62. Jesus is the one who will live his life out through us.

  63. And so this morning,

  64. we're at the end of this sermon,

  65. probably the best sermon ever preached.

  66. And in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7:13–29

  67. verses 13 through 29,

  68. in this extended section,

  69. Jesus is going to call you

  70. to make a decision.

  71. It's going to come out like this.

  72. Choose this day

  73. whom you will obey.

  74. You will need to choose today

  75. whom you're going to obey.

  76. Jesus doesn't leave anything.

  77. He makes it very clear.

  78. You've got two options.

  79. And what he is obviously going to tell us is

  80. choose him.

  81. Obey him.

  82. And so he calls for a decision.

  83. So these 17 verses,

  84. Jesus lays out four options

  85. for you to choose between.

  86. You've got to choose between two paths.

  87. You've got to choose between two prophets.

  88. You've got to choose between two professions.

  89. And you've got to choose between two foundations.

  90. And so Jesus,

  91. over these four times,

  92. gives us options to choose between.

  93. Choose this day

  94. whom you will obey.

  95. And what he's getting at

  96. is this.

  97. Whose authority are you going to come under?

  98. Whose words are you going to build your life on?

  99. Who's going to be in charge of your life?

  100. Choose this day.

  101. Choose this day

  102. who you will obey.

  103. And the one speaking

  104. is the one

  105. whom you must obey.

  106. So four choices

  107. given to us

  108. by the incarnate God himself.

  109. Choose this day

  110. whom you will obey.

  111. Let's look at this.

  112. Verses 13 and 14,

  113. these two paths.

  114. Jesus commands,

  115. enter by the narrow gate.

  116. For the gate is wide

  117. and the way is easy

  118. that leads to destruction.

  119. And those who enter it,

  120. enter by it,

  121. are many.

  122. For the gate is narrow

  123. and the way is hard

  124. that leads to life.

  125. And those who find it

  126. are few.

  127. And so,

  128. in this first option,

  129. Jesus gives us

  130. two paths.

  131. And they stand

  132. in stark contrast

  133. to each other.

  134. Both paths

  135. have a gate,

  136. a starting point.

  137. You can see in verse 15,

  138. excuse me,

  139. 13,

  140. enter by the narrow gate

  141. for the gate is wide.

  142. One of the gates

  143. is a wide gate.

  144. And if you

  145. go through a wide gate,

  146. what that means is

  147. it's,

  148. hey,

  149. anybody can come through this gate.

  150. It's really broad.

  151. It's really wide.

  152. It's designed to let

  153. a lot of people

  154. go through at one time.

  155. But there's another gate.

  156. It's a narrow gate.

  157. And a narrow gate

  158. is restrictive.

  159. Do you know

  160. what a turnstile is?

  161. Have you ever been

  162. walking into,

  163. like,

  164. a ball game

  165. or a concert

  166. and the big mob

  167. of people

  168. that wants to get in,

  169. they,

  170. it funnels down

  171. to this one turnstile?

  172. Click,

  173. clink,

  174. click,

  175. clink,

  176. click,

  177. clink,

  178. click,

  179. clink,

  180. only one at a time.

  181. It's a narrow gate.

  182. Jesus says,

  183. enter by the narrow gate.

  184. In John 10,

  185. 9,

  186. Jesus says that

  187. he is the door.

  188. He is the gate.

  189. If anyone enters

  190. through him,

  191. he will be saved.

  192. And so from the get-go

  193. in these two paths,

  194. you've got to realize

  195. there's two gates.

  196. There's a wide gate

  197. that lets a lot

  198. of people through

  199. and then there's

  200. a narrow gate.

  201. Jesus is that gate.

  202. But both paths

  203. have distinct ways.

  204. Did you notice that?

  205. There's the broad gate

  206. that opens

  207. to a wide way.

  208. Think of a five-lane highway.

  209. Remember driving

  210. through Atlanta

  211. years ago.

  212. It's a huge highway.

  213. Multiple lanes.

  214. But the broad way,

  215. think about it

  216. this way today.

  217. There are five lanes

  218. in that highway.

  219. There's the lane

  220. of pluralism.

  221. That's where people say,

  222. hey, there are many ways

  223. to heaven or nirvana

  224. or salvation,

  225. whatever you want

  226. to call it.

  227. We're all going

  228. the same direction.

  229. Pluralism.

  230. That's one of the lanes

  231. on this broad way.

  232. Scientism.

  233. You know what

  234. scientism is?

  235. It's the belief

  236. that the final say,

  237. the final authority

  238. on all things

  239. is science.

  240. Many people

  241. are on that path,

  242. that lane.

  243. There's another lane

  244. on this broad way.

  245. It's called materialism.

  246. It's thinking that,

  247. hey, my value,

  248. my joy,

  249. my happiness

  250. is determined

  251. by my net worth

  252. or the abundance

  253. of my possessions.

  254. That's just another lane

  255. on this broad way.

  256. And then there's

  257. this thing called

  258. hedonism,

  259. the pursuit of pleasure.

  260. I will do

  261. whatever I want to do

  262. with whoever

  263. I want to do

  264. whenever I want to do it.

  265. It's a broad way

  266. with many lanes.

  267. Standing in stark contrast

  268. to that broad way

  269. is a narrow way.

  270. When one enters

  271. the narrow gate of Jesus,

  272. he steps onto

  273. the narrow way

  274. of discipleship.

  275. And it's a narrow way.

  276. It's walking

  277. according to the words

  278. of Jesus.

  279. It's living

  280. according to what

  281. he says.

  282. In one sense,

  283. it is restrictive.

  284. In verse 14,

  285. when Jesus says

  286. that this way

  287. is hard,

  288. do you see that?

  289. For the gate is narrow

  290. and the way is hard

  291. that leads to life.

  292. That word hard

  293. means to press.

  294. Like if someone

  295. pressed your nose hard

  296. and started to bleed,

  297. it's part of a word group

  298. in the New Testament

  299. that gets at the word

  300. tribulation.

  301. And so we see it

  302. showing up in Acts 14,

  303. 22.

  304. Through many tribulations

  305. we must enter

  306. the kingdom of God.

  307. This narrow way

  308. of discipleship

  309. is a way that's marked

  310. by hardship,

  311. by suffering.

  312. That's what Jesus

  313. has promised.

  314. He says,

  315. just flip back

  316. to the Beatitudes.

  317. And if you turn

  318. to where Jesus

  319. ends all these

  320. blessings,

  321. he says in verse 10,

  322. blessed are those

  323. who are persecuted

  324. for righteousness' sake.

  325. Verse 11,

  326. blessed are you

  327. when others revile you

  328. and persecute you

  329. and utter all kinds

  330. of evil against you

  331. falsely on my account.

  332. When you get on

  333. the narrow way

  334. through the gate of Jesus,

  335. it's going to go hard

  336. for you.

  337. It's not a cakewalk.

  338. And Jesus doesn't put it

  339. in small print.

  340. He's like right up front.

  341. It's not going to be easy.

  342. And so the narrow way

  343. of discipleship,

  344. it's not,

  345. it's completely different

  346. than the broad way.

  347. There's not pluralism.

  348. For us who follow Jesus,

  349. it's exclusively

  350. about Jesus.

  351. It's only through Christ

  352. that you can be saved.

  353. There's only one name

  354. given among men

  355. under heaven

  356. by which man can be saved.

  357. That's the name of Jesus.

  358. Jesus.

  359. Scientism isn't

  360. our final authority.

  361. The words of Jesus

  362. are our final authority.

  363. The Bible is our final.

  364. God speaking to us.

  365. Greed isn't a lane

  366. we travel on.

  367. We don't store up

  368. treasures on earth,

  369. but treasures in heaven.

  370. We don't live for the dot,

  371. we live for the line.

  372. And we're not living

  373. as hedonists.

  374. I'll want whatever I want

  375. with whoever I want

  376. whenever.

  377. It's not what I want,

  378. it's what He wants.

  379. You see,

  380. the narrow path is,

  381. it's a way of submission

  382. to Jesus.

  383. It's living under His authority.

  384. It's obedience to His words.

  385. And it stands in stark contrast

  386. to the broad way.

  387. So we've seen two gates,

  388. we've seen two ways,

  389. but there are also

  390. two destinations.

  391. Did you notice that?

  392. Enter by the narrow gate

  393. for the gate is wide

  394. and the way is easy.

  395. That leads to destruction.

  396. The broad way,

  397. this multi-lane highway

  398. is on its way

  399. to destruction.

  400. And Jesus is talking

  401. about eschatological destruction.

  402. It's a fancy way

  403. for saying end times,

  404. final destruction.

  405. He's talking about hell,

  406. eternal torment,

  407. outer darkness,

  408. the place where there's

  409. weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  410. He compares it

  411. to a burning trash dump.

  412. Jesus talks about hell

  413. more than He talks

  414. about heaven.

  415. And what He's saying here

  416. is this multi-lane highway,

  417. pluralism, scientism,

  418. materialism, hedonism,

  419. it's all going somewhere.

  420. Apart from Christ,

  421. that is moving towards destruction.

  422. But the narrow gate,

  423. the hard way,

  424. the Jesus way,

  425. that doesn't lead

  426. to destruction.

  427. That leads to life.

  428. It leads to eternal life.

  429. That leads to

  430. seeing Jesus face to face,

  431. being in His company

  432. for eternity.

  433. Not in outer darkness,

  434. but in His presence.

  435. Not weeping and gnashing

  436. of teeth,

  437. but wide-mouthed joy.

  438. Both paths have travelers

  439. on them.

  440. There are many

  441. on the broad way.

  442. Many on the way

  443. to eternal torment.

  444. Many on the path

  445. to destruction.

  446. But Jesus' way

  447. that leads to life,

  448. there are relatively few.

  449. As followers of Jesus,

  450. what you need to understand

  451. is that we're in the minority.

  452. We're a minority people group.

  453. It is not popular

  454. to go on the narrow path.

  455. The popular way

  456. is the broad way.

  457. The hard way

  458. is the Jesus way.

  459. And so here are two paths

  460. between,

  461. and you need to choose one.

  462. You need to pick

  463. which path

  464. you're going to live on.

  465. You're going to pick

  466. which gate

  467. you're going to go through.

  468. Now there are warnings here.

  469. Now imagine

  470. that you have been

  471. walking on the broad way.

  472. You've been living

  473. a life of a hedonist.

  474. You've been living

  475. under that thinking that,

  476. hey, there are many ways

  477. to God.

  478. What's the big deal?

  479. And as you're walking

  480. on that broad way,

  481. you've got to realize,

  482. Jesus is like

  483. on the side of the broad way

  484. and He is waving to you.

  485. He's saying,

  486. come off the broad way.

  487. Turn from the broad way.

  488. Do you not know

  489. where the broad way is going?

  490. Come to me.

  491. Come to my path.

  492. Come to life.

  493. life.

  494. He's beckoning you

  495. if you're on the broad way

  496. and you know it

  497. to turn off

  498. the broad way

  499. and to come to Him.

  500. Come follow Him.

  501. Come under

  502. His saving reign.

  503. Will you obey Him?

  504. Will you say,

  505. Jesus, Jesus?

  506. There's one more piece

  507. I want to clarify here

  508. because I think

  509. that there's some confusion

  510. on this.

  511. If you think

  512. that you can live life

  513. with one foot

  514. in the broad way

  515. and one foot

  516. in the narrow way,

  517. you are deceiving yourself.

  518. Jesus does not give you

  519. that option.

  520. If you're not

  521. fully in the narrow way,

  522. you're in the broad way.

  523. There's one more lane.

  524. It's the lane of compromise.

  525. On the broad way.

  526. It's the lane that Judas walked.

  527. It's the lane that Demas,

  528. who, in love for the world,

  529. abandoned Paul.

  530. It's a broad path

  531. and compromise is on it.

  532. You can't walk both paths simultaneously.

  533. You're either in one

  534. or you're in the other.

  535. And Jesus says,

  536. today,

  537. choose the path

  538. of life.

  539. Choose the narrow gate.

  540. Choose the narrow way.

  541. Choose life.

  542. Choose Jesus.

  543. Jesus.

  544. whom

  545. this day

  546. will you obey.

  547. Two paths.

  548. Now let's look at two prophets.

  549. Verses 15 through 20.

  550. Beware of false prophets

  551. who come to you

  552. in sheep's clothing,

  553. but inwardly

  554. are ravenous wolves.

  555. You will recognize them

  556. by their fruits.

  557. Are grapes gathered

  558. from thorn bushes

  559. or figs from thistles?

  560. So every healthy tree

  561. bears good fruit,

  562. but the diseased tree

  563. bears bad fruit.

  564. A healthy tree

  565. cannot bear bad fruit,

  566. nor can a diseased tree

  567. bear good fruit.

  568. Every tree

  569. that does not bear good fruit

  570. is cut down

  571. and thrown

  572. into the fire.

  573. Thus,

  574. you will recognize them

  575. by their fruit.

  576. Today,

  577. you need to choose

  578. whom you're going

  579. to listen to.

  580. Whose words

  581. you're going to believe.

  582. Because what

  583. you believe

  584. matters.

  585. You will build

  586. your life

  587. on someone's words.

  588. Jesus says,

  589. beware.

  590. Take heed.

  591. Watch out

  592. for false prophets.

  593. Literally,

  594. pseudo-prophets.

  595. And what Jesus

  596. is doing in this

  597. section is making

  598. a distinction

  599. between false prophets

  600. and true prophets.

  601. He's saying,

  602. choose who you're

  603. going to listen to.

  604. Choose who you're

  605. going to follow.

  606. Choose the one

  607. who's going to direct

  608. you down which

  609. path.

  610. Now,

  611. a prophet is someone

  612. who speaks

  613. on behalf of God.

  614. He speaks

  615. God's word.

  616. And what God

  617. calls a prophet

  618. to do is

  619. God says,

  620. speak the truth,

  621. the whole truth,

  622. and nothing

  623. but the truth.

  624. You don't

  625. take away

  626. from what God

  627. is saying.

  628. You don't add

  629. to what God

  630. is saying.

  631. and for sure

  632. you don't make

  633. something up

  634. and say,

  635. it's God

  636. speaking.

  637. A false prophet

  638. is someone

  639. who's claiming

  640. to speak for God

  641. but is leaving

  642. words out.

  643. They're adding

  644. to his words.

  645. They're making

  646. stuff up

  647. and slapping

  648. God on it.

  649. In verse 15,

  650. Jesus tells us

  651. why we must

  652. be aware.

  653. Look at verse 15.

  654. Beware of false

  655. prophets who come

  656. to you,

  657. to you,

  658. in sheep's clothing,

  659. in our inwardly

  660. ravenous woes.

  661. False prophets

  662. have an agenda.

  663. They come

  664. into a church

  665. and they're dressed

  666. up like a nice

  667. Christian

  668. but they got

  669. an agenda.

  670. They're wanting

  671. to mislead

  672. God's people.

  673. They want

  674. to feed them

  675. with falsehood

  676. and bring

  677. destruction

  678. and harm

  679. to God's people.

  680. Who are they

  681. looking,

  682. who are these

  683. ravenous wolves

  684. looking to

  685. shred apart

  686. God's sheep,

  687. the flock of God,

  688. God's people?

  689. Well,

  690. you can believe

  691. that Jesus

  692. has an issue

  693. with these

  694. false prophets.

  695. False prophets

  696. are false shepherds

  697. who mislead

  698. God's people

  699. by their false

  700. words.

  701. They claim

  702. an authority

  703. from God

  704. but their message

  705. and their life

  706. and their fruit

  707. show that

  708. they're imposters.

  709. sinners.

  710. Now,

  711. if you're

  712. wondering now,

  713. like,

  714. how do I

  715. recognize

  716. a false prophet?

  717. Jesus is a step

  718. ahead of you.

  719. Jesus moves

  720. from talking

  721. about shepherding

  722. wolves and sheep

  723. to horticulture.

  724. He starts talking

  725. about trees

  726. and fruit.

  727. And we see

  728. that in verse

  729. 16,

  730. you will recognize

  731. them by their

  732. fruits.

  733. And then down

  734. in verse 20,

  735. thus you will

  736. recognize them

  737. by their fruits.

  738. We are going

  739. to recognize

  740. false prophets

  741. by their fruit.

  742. It might take

  743. a little time

  744. but we will

  745. recognize them.

  746. Now,

  747. before I point

  748. you to three

  749. tests,

  750. three kind of

  751. steps to take

  752. for fruit inspection,

  753. I want to let

  754. you know this.

  755. The New Testament

  756. is very clear.

  757. There will

  758. be

  759. false prophets

  760. who seek

  761. to come

  762. among us.

  763. Jesus warns

  764. it in Matthew

  765. 24,

  766. 11.

  767. Paul brings

  768. together the

  769. elders of

  770. Ephesus and

  771. Miletus and

  772. says,

  773. be aware.

  774. And he says

  775. to them,

  776. from among you

  777. elders there will

  778. be false prophets.

  779. Wolves,

  780. he calls them.

  781. It's very

  782. sobering.

  783. 2 Timothy 4,

  784. 3,

  785. 2 Peter 2,

  786. 1 through 3,

  787. 1 John 4,

  788. 1.

  789. The New Testament

  790. is very clear.

  791. There's going

  792. to be false

  793. teachers who

  794. are going

  795. to want

  796. to come

  797. in and

  798. influence

  799. God's

  800. church.

  801. Okay.

  802. I've got

  803. some serious

  804. questions about

  805. Joel Olsteen.

  806. I've got some

  807. serious questions

  808. about Joyce

  809. Myers,

  810. Kerflo Dollar.

  811. I've got some

  812. serious questions

  813. about them.

  814. They're

  815. concerning to

  816. me.

  817. They're on

  818. dangerous ground.

  819. So how do

  820. you recognize

  821. a false

  822. prophet?

  823. Three tests.

  824. You start

  825. with a

  826. thump

  827. test.

  828. Like a

  829. cantaloupe.

  830. You thump

  831. a cantaloupe.

  832. You're

  833. thumping

  834. for truth.

  835. Are they

  836. speaking truth?

  837. Are they

  838. saying what

  839. God says?

  840. Are they

  841. leaving

  842. something out?

  843. Are they

  844. adding

  845. something to

  846. it?

  847. Are they

  848. making this

  849. up on

  850. their own?

  851. You know,

  852. one of the

  853. clearest

  854. tests is

  855. right from

  856. the text.

  857. It's

  858. this.

  859. Are they

  860. teaching

  861. the narrow

  862. way?

  863. Are they

  864. saying that

  865. it's only

  866. through Jesus

  867. you can be

  868. saved?

  869. That is a

  870. very effective

  871. test for a

  872. false prophet.

  873. Do you

  874. say that

  875. Jesus is

  876. the only

  877. way?

  878. Or do

  879. you think

  880. that there

  881. are many

  882. ways to

  883. Jesus?

  884. It's only

  885. through Jesus.

  886. And do

  887. they say

  888. that the

  889. way of

  890. discipleship

  891. is easy?

  892. Or do

  893. they say

  894. that the

  895. way of

  896. discipleship

  897. is hard?

  898. There's a

  899. distortion of

  900. the gospel

  901. being propagated

  902. out there.

  903. It's called

  904. the prosperity

  905. gospel.

  906. It goes

  907. something like

  908. this.

  909. Oh,

  910. your father

  911. in heaven

  912. wants good

  913. for you.

  914. And so

  915. he wants

  916. you to be

  917. experiencing

  918. the abundant

  919. life.

  920. And what

  921. is the

  922. abundant

  923. life?

  924. The abundant

  925. life,

  926. it means

  927. that you

  928. have all

  929. health

  930. possible

  931. and that

  932. you are

  933. well off.

  934. That you're

  935. healthy and

  936. that you're

  937. wealthy.

  938. That's what

  939. God your

  940. father wants

  941. for you.

  942. So you

  943. just need

  944. to ask him

  945. for that.

  946. And then

  947. keep on

  948. asking.

  949. And if you

  950. don't have

  951. it, it's

  952. on you.

  953. You just

  954. don't have

  955. enough faith.

  956. Oh, by the

  957. way, send

  958. us a check

  959. just to show

  960. because we're

  961. trusting that

  962. God is going

  963. to make us

  964. healthy and

  965. wealthy.

  966. Jesus doesn't

  967. teach that.

  968. Jesus doesn't

  969. say the way

  970. of discipleship

  971. is easy.

  972. He says it's

  973. hard and

  974. narrow, that

  975. you're going

  976. to suffer, it's

  977. going to be

  978. difficult.

  979. That's how you

  980. get this stuff

  981. out.

  982. Thump,

  983. thump,

  984. are you

  985. speaking truth?

  986. Are you

  987. making stuff

  988. up to pad

  989. your pocket?

  990. Second

  991. test is the

  992. sniff test.

  993. Does their

  994. lifestyle square

  995. with God's

  996. word?

  997. Do that, are

  998. they walking

  999. the narrow

  1000. way?

  1001. You know, one

  1002. of the things

  1003. that 2 Peter

  1004. raises in its

  1005. denunciation of

  1006. false prophets

  1007. is they do

  1008. it for greed.

  1009. they do it

  1010. for money.

  1011. They do it

  1012. for building

  1013. up wealth.

  1014. Does their

  1015. lifestyle square

  1016. with the call

  1017. of Jesus

  1018. to lay up

  1019. treasures in

  1020. heaven, not

  1021. on earth?

  1022. you know what?

  1023. There are a

  1024. group of

  1025. people who

  1026. are preaching

  1027. the prosperity

  1028. gospel, and

  1029. do you know

  1030. what they're

  1031. doing?

  1032. They fly in

  1033. their private

  1034. jets to

  1035. nations, third

  1036. world countries,

  1037. fill stadiums,

  1038. collect money,

  1039. and then fly

  1040. back home.

  1041. We're exporting

  1042. it.

  1043. What does

  1044. Jesus think

  1045. of that?

  1046. Lord, have

  1047. mercy.

  1048. The third

  1049. fruit is the

  1050. taste fruit.

  1051. Taste test.

  1052. What effect

  1053. is their

  1054. ministry having

  1055. on others?

  1056. What is the

  1057. effect?

  1058. What is it

  1059. producing?

  1060. Is it

  1061. producing people

  1062. who are walking

  1063. through the

  1064. narrow gate, who

  1065. are saying, I'm

  1066. going to go the

  1067. hard way, I'm

  1068. going to follow

  1069. Jesus no matter

  1070. what comes, or

  1071. is it confusing

  1072. people?

  1073. Is it giving

  1074. people license to

  1075. compromise?

  1076. Jeremiah 6

  1077. warns against

  1078. false prophets.

  1079. They're preaching

  1080. peace, peace,

  1081. when there is

  1082. no peace.

  1083. it matters to

  1084. God.

  1085. Holiness matters

  1086. to God.

  1087. The true

  1088. prophets, the

  1089. good trees, the

  1090. healthy trees, not

  1091. the bad trees, not

  1092. the diseased

  1093. trees, the good

  1094. trees.

  1095. These prophets

  1096. seek to speak

  1097. God's word

  1098. carefully.

  1099. They don't want

  1100. to leave anything

  1101. out.

  1102. They don't want

  1103. to add anything

  1104. to it, and

  1105. they're certainly

  1106. not going to

  1107. tell you something

  1108. that they think

  1109. you should hear

  1110. in the name

  1111. of God.

  1112. They're not

  1113. going to say,

  1114. write me a

  1115. check, thus

  1116. saith the

  1117. Lord.

  1118. They don't

  1119. do that.

  1120. True

  1121. prophets know

  1122. that God's

  1123. words, His

  1124. very words, are

  1125. life to His

  1126. sheep.

  1127. They want to

  1128. feed the

  1129. sheep with

  1130. God's word.

  1131. They're good

  1132. trees that

  1133. produce good

  1134. fruit.

  1135. And so

  1136. this morning,

  1137. you need to

  1138. choose who

  1139. you're going

  1140. to listen

  1141. to.

  1142. What

  1143. prophets are

  1144. you going to

  1145. listen to

  1146. their

  1147. podcasts?

  1148. When they

  1149. proclaim Jesus

  1150. as the only

  1151. way, and

  1152. they call you

  1153. to a hard

  1154. way that leads

  1155. to life, that

  1156. their lives

  1157. reflect their

  1158. message.

  1159. It's not about

  1160. greed.

  1161. It's not about

  1162. power.

  1163. It's not about

  1164. prestige.

  1165. But these

  1166. true prophets

  1167. are seeking to

  1168. be humble

  1169. servants, stewards

  1170. of the very

  1171. words of God.

  1172. Their ministry

  1173. results in

  1174. clear-minded

  1175. followers of

  1176. Jesus who

  1177. don't compromise,

  1178. but are

  1179. wholeheartedly

  1180. obedient to

  1181. their King.

  1182. did you

  1183. know?

  1184. Did you notice

  1185. verse 19?

  1186. Every tree,

  1187. every diseased

  1188. tree, every

  1189. false prophet

  1190. that does not

  1191. bear good

  1192. fruit is cut

  1193. down and

  1194. thrown into

  1195. the fire.

  1196. Eschatological

  1197. fire.

  1198. Judgment.

  1199. Jesus doesn't

  1200. mince words

  1201. about false

  1202. prophets.

  1203. He takes it

  1204. very serious

  1205. because his

  1206. people's health

  1207. are at stake.

  1208. The way of

  1209. salvation is

  1210. under challenge.

  1211. Very serious.

  1212. So choose this

  1213. day whom you

  1214. will listen to.

  1215. Are you going to

  1216. listen to false

  1217. prophets or are you

  1218. going to listen to

  1219. prophets sent to you

  1220. from Jesus himself?

  1221. Well, we've

  1222. moved from two

  1223. prophets now.

  1224. Let's look at two

  1225. professions.

  1226. Verses 21

  1227. through 23.

  1228. Not everyone

  1229. who says to me,

  1230. this is really

  1231. hard, what

  1232. you're about to

  1233. read.

  1234. Not everyone

  1235. who says to me,

  1236. Lord, Lord,

  1237. will enter the

  1238. kingdom of heaven,

  1239. but the one who

  1240. does the will of

  1241. my Father who is

  1242. in heaven.

  1243. On that day,

  1244. many will say

  1245. to me,

  1246. Lord, Lord,

  1247. did we not

  1248. prophesy in your

  1249. name and cast

  1250. out demons in

  1251. your name and do

  1252. many mighty works

  1253. in your name and

  1254. then will I

  1255. declare to them,

  1256. I never knew

  1257. you.

  1258. Depart from me,

  1259. you workers of

  1260. lawlessness.

  1261. Jesus raises a

  1262. very, very

  1263. sobering truth

  1264. for us here.

  1265. There will be

  1266. some, he

  1267. says, many

  1268. on the day

  1269. of judgment

  1270. who will go

  1271. to the day

  1272. of judgment

  1273. and stand

  1274. before Christ

  1275. the King

  1276. and they will

  1277. say, Lord,

  1278. Lord.

  1279. Only to hear

  1280. that Jesus

  1281. declares, I

  1282. never knew you.

  1283. Depart from me,

  1284. you worker of

  1285. lawlessness.

  1286. There are two

  1287. claims being made

  1288. here.

  1289. There are two

  1290. professions that

  1291. Jesus is laying

  1292. out in front of

  1293. us.

  1294. Two professions

  1295. we need to

  1296. choose between.

  1297. The false

  1298. claim of

  1299. Lord, Lord,

  1300. and the true

  1301. claim of an

  1302. obedient life.

  1303. Now, don't

  1304. get me wrong.

  1305. Confessing that

  1306. Jesus is Lord

  1307. is essential to

  1308. being saved.

  1309. Romans 10, 9,

  1310. if you confess

  1311. with your mouth

  1312. that Jesus is

  1313. Lord and believe

  1314. with your heart

  1315. that God raised

  1316. him from the

  1317. dead, you will

  1318. be saved.

  1319. And so, confessing

  1320. Jesus is Lord is

  1321. essential to being

  1322. saved, but it

  1323. doesn't necessarily

  1324. prove you're

  1325. saved.

  1326. Just because you

  1327. publicly declared

  1328. Jesus to be your

  1329. Lord doesn't mean

  1330. he's actually your

  1331. Lord.

  1332. What Jesus is

  1333. saying, there's

  1334. going to be some

  1335. people on that

  1336. day are saying

  1337. one thing, but

  1338. they've been doing

  1339. another.

  1340. And it doesn't

  1341. get by the

  1342. king.

  1343. In other words,

  1344. a claim to

  1345. Jesus'

  1346. lordship over

  1347. your life without

  1348. a life that is

  1349. changing because

  1350. you're seeking to

  1351. obey the will of

  1352. the Father.

  1353. Do you know

  1354. what that is?

  1355. That's a false

  1356. profession.

  1357. It's a false

  1358. claim.

  1359. But a claim of

  1360. Jesus being my

  1361. Lord that is

  1362. coupled by a life

  1363. that's changing

  1364. because you're

  1365. hearing the words

  1366. of your king and

  1367. you're wanting to

  1368. obey them and do

  1369. them and you're

  1370. trying to walk in

  1371. the narrow way,

  1372. that's legit.

  1373. That's a real

  1374. profession.

  1375. That evidence is

  1376. real conversion.

  1377. So what's the

  1378. litmus test?

  1379. How do you know

  1380. if someone is

  1381. genuinely a follower

  1382. of Jesus?

  1383. How do you know

  1384. if someone's walking

  1385. the narrow way or

  1386. not?

  1387. It's really simple

  1388. according to Jesus.

  1389. are they obeying his

  1390. words?

  1391. Are they doing what

  1392. he says?

  1393. Our conversion to

  1394. Christ is

  1395. demonstrated not

  1396. just in word

  1397. only.

  1398. Our conversion to

  1399. Christ is

  1400. demonstrated in

  1401. word and deed,

  1402. a changed life.

  1403. and not just any

  1404. deeds.

  1405. Jesus is talking

  1406. about obedience to

  1407. the will of his

  1408. father.

  1409. Moral obedience.

  1410. Isn't it sobering

  1411. when you read verse

  1412. 22?

  1413. On that day,

  1414. many will say to

  1415. me,

  1416. Lord, Lord,

  1417. did we not

  1418. prophesy in your

  1419. name?

  1420. That's a deed.

  1421. Did we not

  1422. cast out demons

  1423. in your name?

  1424. That's a deed.

  1425. Did we not do

  1426. mighty works,

  1427. miracles in your

  1428. name?

  1429. Lord, Lord,

  1430. did we not do

  1431. this?

  1432. Let us in.

  1433. Let us in.

  1434. I never knew

  1435. you.

  1436. You were never

  1437. a part of my

  1438. kingdom.

  1439. In many

  1440. Christian circles

  1441. today,

  1442. deeds like

  1443. prophesying,

  1444. casting out

  1445. demons,

  1446. working miracles,

  1447. people are like,

  1448. wow, you're

  1449. awesome.

  1450. That's really

  1451. cool.

  1452. You're legit.

  1453. But Jesus is

  1454. not impressed

  1455. with that.

  1456. You can be

  1457. doing all

  1458. this stuff

  1459. in his

  1460. name and

  1461. not be

  1462. saved.

  1463. I never

  1464. knew you.

  1465. If it's not

  1466. these kinds

  1467. of deeds,

  1468. what are the

  1469. deeds?

  1470. What kind

  1471. of doing

  1472. delights

  1473. Jesus?

  1474. If these

  1475. kinds of

  1476. deeds of

  1477. prophesying

  1478. and casting

  1479. out demons

  1480. and performing

  1481. miracles,

  1482. if that's not

  1483. endearing to

  1484. the Savior,

  1485. what kind

  1486. of deeds

  1487. are?

  1488. What kind

  1489. of deeds

  1490. are?

  1491. not everyone

  1492. who says

  1493. to me,

  1494. Lord,

  1495. Lord,

  1496. will enter

  1497. the kingdom

  1498. of heaven,

  1499. but the

  1500. one who

  1501. does the

  1502. will of

  1503. my Father

  1504. in heaven.

  1505. That delights

  1506. our King,

  1507. obeying

  1508. his commands.

  1509. God's

  1510. so don't

  1511. murder

  1512. and don't

  1513. get sinfully

  1514. angry at

  1515. people.

  1516. Don't

  1517. cheat on

  1518. your spouse

  1519. and don't

  1520. sexually lust

  1521. after people.

  1522. Yes,

  1523. Lord,

  1524. yes,

  1525. Lord,

  1526. help me,

  1527. Lord.

  1528. That's

  1529. where he

  1530. wants us

  1531. obeying.

  1532. As Jesus

  1533. is saying

  1534. here that

  1535. works save

  1536. you,

  1537. he's not

  1538. saying that.

  1539. All he's

  1540. saying here

  1541. is that

  1542. genuine

  1543. faith in

  1544. him

  1545. results in

  1546. real

  1547. obedience

  1548. to the

  1549. will of

  1550. the Father.

  1551. It's

  1552. yes,

  1553. oh,

  1554. the commandments

  1555. of God

  1556. are not

  1557. burdensome,

  1558. 1 John.

  1559. It's our

  1560. delight.

  1561. I want to

  1562. obey.

  1563. It's not

  1564. easy,

  1565. but I

  1566. want to.

  1567. Good works

  1568. don't save

  1569. any of us.

  1570. Only Jesus

  1571. and through

  1572. his blood

  1573. and resurrection

  1574. that's what

  1575. saves us.

  1576. But Jesus

  1577. didn't save

  1578. us in

  1579. order to

  1580. navel

  1581. gaze.

  1582. He saved

  1583. us for

  1584. good works.

  1585. Ephesians

  1586. 2,

  1587. 8,

  1588. 9,

  1589. and 10.

  1590. Titus

  1591. 2,

  1592. 11 through

  1593. 14.

  1594. James,

  1595. when he

  1596. says,

  1597. faith without

  1598. works is

  1599. dead,

  1600. what he's

  1601. getting at

  1602. is that,

  1603. hey,

  1604. if you're

  1605. saying you

  1606. believe in

  1607. Jesus but

  1608. it doesn't

  1609. show up in

  1610. a changed

  1611. life,

  1612. you're not

  1613. really

  1614. believing in

  1615. Jesus.

  1616. The chief

  1617. characteristic of

  1618. those on the

  1619. hard,

  1620. narrow way of

  1621. discipleship is

  1622. obedience.

  1623. Choose this

  1624. day whom

  1625. you will

  1626. obey.

  1627. There's some,

  1628. there's a

  1629. beautiful passage,

  1630. I actually,

  1631. I read it this

  1632. morning in my

  1633. devotions,

  1634. it's 1 John

  1635. 2,

  1636. 4 through 6.

  1637. How do you

  1638. know that

  1639. someone is a

  1640. child of God

  1641. when they

  1642. keep his

  1643. commandments?

  1644. obedience.

  1645. So here are

  1646. some implications

  1647. to what Jesus

  1648. is saying

  1649. here.

  1650. These,

  1651. these two

  1652. professions,

  1653. it should

  1654. sober you

  1655. up.

  1656. It should,

  1657. it should

  1658. make you

  1659. ask this

  1660. question,

  1661. am I

  1662. obeying

  1663. Jesus or

  1664. is it just

  1665. lip service

  1666. I'm giving

  1667. him?

  1668. Are you

  1669. seeking to

  1670. obey him?

  1671. Is there a

  1672. command right

  1673. now you're

  1674. asking help

  1675. for to

  1676. obey?

  1677. Because you

  1678. want to

  1679. please him.

  1680. You know,

  1681. J.C.

  1682. Ryle said

  1683. this,

  1684. many strange

  1685. things will

  1686. happen on

  1687. the day of

  1688. judgment.

  1689. And this

  1690. is one of

  1691. them.

  1692. Lord,

  1693. Lord,

  1694. I never

  1695. knew you.

  1696. Here's another

  1697. implication.

  1698. So first,

  1699. be warned,

  1700. take it to

  1701. heart.

  1702. Second,

  1703. it changes

  1704. your parenting.

  1705. If you're a

  1706. parent and

  1707. your goal

  1708. is to

  1709. get your

  1710. child to

  1711. pray a

  1712. prayer in

  1713. which he

  1714. or she

  1715. asks Jesus

  1716. into their

  1717. heart and

  1718. on that

  1719. moment you're

  1720. like,

  1721. okay,

  1722. on that

  1723. day my

  1724. four-year-old

  1725. was saved.

  1726. They will

  1727. need to make

  1728. a decision

  1729. for Jesus.

  1730. But what

  1731. Jesus is

  1732. calling us

  1733. to here is

  1734. not so much

  1735. asking Jesus

  1736. into your

  1737. heart,

  1738. but all of

  1739. your heart

  1740. obeying

  1741. Jesus.

  1742. And so as

  1743. parents,

  1744. when we

  1745. raise our

  1746. children in

  1747. the fear and

  1748. admonition of

  1749. the Lord,

  1750. what we're

  1751. trying to do

  1752. is not

  1753. trying to

  1754. make them

  1755. make a

  1756. decision,

  1757. what we're

  1758. trying to

  1759. help them

  1760. see is,

  1761. sweetheart,

  1762. God is

  1763. calling you

  1764. to follow

  1765. him.

  1766. This is

  1767. another area

  1768. in which God

  1769. wants your

  1770. heart,

  1771. you need to

  1772. trust in

  1773. him.

  1774. And because

  1775. you're not,

  1776. it shows

  1777. you're in

  1778. need of

  1779. him.

  1780. it changes

  1781. our parenting.

  1782. I don't want

  1783. any of my

  1784. kids saying,

  1785. Lord,

  1786. Lord,

  1787. I grew up

  1788. in a

  1789. pastor's

  1790. house,

  1791. let me

  1792. in.

  1793. That won't

  1794. do anything.

  1795. Choose

  1796. this day

  1797. whom you

  1798. live.

  1799. There's one

  1800. more implication

  1801. to this.

  1802. I'm not sure

  1803. if you

  1804. noticed it.

  1805. Did you

  1806. notice the

  1807. phrase,

  1808. on that

  1809. day?

  1810. Again,

  1811. Jesus is

  1812. talking about

  1813. eschatological

  1814. judgment.

  1815. And do you

  1816. know who's

  1817. the judge

  1818. on that

  1819. day?

  1820. Jesus is

  1821. the judge.

  1822. Do you

  1823. understand the

  1824. claim he's

  1825. making right

  1826. now?

  1827. He's God

  1828. in the

  1829. flesh.

  1830. He's going

  1831. to judge

  1832. it all.

  1833. You've

  1834. got to

  1835. stand before

  1836. him on

  1837. that day.

  1838. Two

  1839. professions.

  1840. Let's

  1841. move to

  1842. two

  1843. foundations.

  1844. This is

  1845. the parable

  1846. that we

  1847. all,

  1848. many of

  1849. us know,

  1850. many of

  1851. us grew

  1852. up singing

  1853. about.

  1854. Two

  1855. foundations.

  1856. This is

  1857. in verses

  1858. 24-27.

  1859. Everyone

  1860. then who

  1861. hears these

  1862. words of

  1863. mine and

  1864. does them

  1865. will be

  1866. like a

  1867. wise man

  1868. who built

  1869. his house

  1870. on the

  1871. rock.

  1872. And the

  1873. rain fell,

  1874. and the

  1875. floods came,

  1876. and the

  1877. winds blew,

  1878. and beat

  1879. on that

  1880. house,

  1881. but it

  1882. did not

  1883. fall,

  1884. because it

  1885. had been

  1886. founded on

  1887. the rock.

  1888. And

  1889. everyone who

  1890. hears these

  1891. words of

  1892. mine and

  1893. does not

  1894. do them

  1895. will be

  1896. like a

  1897. foolish

  1898. man who

  1899. built his

  1900. house on

  1901. the sand,

  1902. and the

  1903. rain fell,

  1904. and the

  1905. floods came,

  1906. and the

  1907. winds blew,

  1908. and beat

  1909. against that

  1910. house,

  1911. and it

  1912. fell,

  1913. and great

  1914. was the

  1915. fall of

  1916. it.

  1917. We got to

  1918. be very

  1919. clear on the

  1920. comparison Jesus

  1921. is making

  1922. here.

  1923. Jesus is

  1924. moving from

  1925. saying without

  1926. doing, a

  1927. false profession,

  1928. to now

  1929. hearing without

  1930. doing.

  1931. hearing these

  1932. words of

  1933. mine.

  1934. And the

  1935. comparison Jesus

  1936. is making, you

  1937. see it in

  1938. verse 24,

  1939. everyone then

  1940. who hears

  1941. these words

  1942. of mine

  1943. and does

  1944. them,

  1945. contrasted to

  1946. verse 26,

  1947. and everyone

  1948. who hears

  1949. these words

  1950. of mine

  1951. and does

  1952. not do

  1953. them.

  1954. The parable

  1955. is a

  1956. contrast

  1957. that gets

  1958. at this

  1959. issue of

  1960. obedience.

  1961. who will

  1962. you obey

  1963. today?

  1964. The contrast

  1965. is between

  1966. those who

  1967. hear and

  1968. obey and

  1969. those who

  1970. hear and

  1971. disobey.

  1972. They do

  1973. not do

  1974. what Jesus

  1975. says to

  1976. do.

  1977. Jesus

  1978. likens

  1979. the one

  1980. who hears

  1981. and obeys

  1982. his words

  1983. to a wise

  1984. man who

  1985. builds his

  1986. house on

  1987. the rock.

  1988. The rock

  1989. are the

  1990. words of

  1991. Jesus.

  1992. Jesus

  1993. says,

  1994. everyone who

  1995. hears these

  1996. words of

  1997. mine,

  1998. he repeats

  1999. that in

  2000. verse 26,

  2001. these words

  2002. of mine.

  2003. The words

  2004. of Jesus

  2005. are rock

  2006. solid because

  2007. he's God

  2008. incarnate.

  2009. They're solid.

  2010. You can build

  2011. your life on

  2012. it.

  2013. what he's

  2014. laid out for

  2015. us in the

  2016. Sermon on

  2017. the Mount,

  2018. these words

  2019. of mine

  2020. about himself,

  2021. that he's

  2022. the fulfiller

  2023. of the

  2024. law,

  2025. that he's

  2026. the judge

  2027. over all.

  2028. They're rock

  2029. solid.

  2030. How he calls

  2031. us to live

  2032. our lives,

  2033. they're rock

  2034. solid.

  2035. He lays

  2036. out the

  2037. path of

  2038. life.

  2039. Now,

  2040. if you

  2041. connect what

  2042. he's saying

  2043. here,

  2044. these words

  2045. of mine

  2046. with verse

  2047. 21,

  2048. not everyone

  2049. who says

  2050. to me,

  2051. Lord,

  2052. Lord,

  2053. will enter

  2054. the kingdom

  2055. of heaven,

  2056. but the

  2057. one who

  2058. does the

  2059. will of

  2060. my father

  2061. who is

  2062. in heaven,

  2063. his words

  2064. reveal the

  2065. will of

  2066. his father

  2067. in heaven.

  2068. His words

  2069. are rock

  2070. solid.

  2071. I started

  2072. this sermon

  2073. by saying

  2074. all of us

  2075. are builders.

  2076. All of us

  2077. are constructing

  2078. a life.

  2079. Every human

  2080. being is

  2081. building a

  2082. life.

  2083. That's the

  2084. house.

  2085. Daily,

  2086. we're making

  2087. decisions based

  2088. upon what we

  2089. believe to be

  2090. true.

  2091. And if you're

  2092. on the

  2093. broad way,

  2094. you're believing

  2095. what the

  2096. broad way is

  2097. telling to be

  2098. true.

  2099. If you're on

  2100. the narrow

  2101. way,

  2102. you're believing

  2103. what Jesus

  2104. is saying to

  2105. be true.

  2106. So decisions

  2107. like how

  2108. will I treat

  2109. others?

  2110. Decisions

  2111. like how

  2112. will I

  2113. respond when

  2114. I'm wrong?

  2115. Decisions

  2116. like what

  2117. am I going

  2118. to live

  2119. for?

  2120. Am I

  2121. going to

  2122. live for

  2123. the dot?

  2124. Am I

  2125. going to

  2126. line?

  2127. Am I

  2128. going to

  2129. invest in

  2130. eternity?

  2131. Or in

  2132. this dying

  2133. world?

  2134. these kinds

  2135. of decisions

  2136. are based

  2137. upon words.

  2138. Who you

  2139. believe.

  2140. Who's the

  2141. authority in

  2142. your life?

  2143. When building

  2144. your life on

  2145. Jesus' words,

  2146. you base

  2147. your decisions

  2148. on what

  2149. Jesus says.

  2150. One decision

  2151. at a time.

  2152. that's the

  2153. life of

  2154. faith.

  2155. That's the

  2156. life of

  2157. obedience.

  2158. And when

  2159. you do

  2160. that, when

  2161. you obey

  2162. all his

  2163. commandments,

  2164. not perfectly

  2165. but faithfully,

  2166. you build

  2167. your house

  2168. on a rock

  2169. solid foundation.

  2170. You build

  2171. your house

  2172. on the rock.

  2173. You build

  2174. your house

  2175. on Jesus.

  2176. But when

  2177. you disobey

  2178. Jesus' words,

  2179. and that's

  2180. what he's

  2181. saying.

  2182. Those who

  2183. hear my words

  2184. and do not

  2185. do them,

  2186. when you

  2187. disobey them,

  2188. you're going

  2189. to still

  2190. build your

  2191. life.

  2192. You're just

  2193. choosing not

  2194. to base

  2195. your decisions

  2196. on what

  2197. Jesus has

  2198. commanded.

  2199. Maybe you've

  2200. heard what

  2201. Jesus has

  2202. said about

  2203. anger,

  2204. lust,

  2205. and divorce,

  2206. but you just

  2207. disregarded it.

  2208. Maybe you've

  2209. heard what

  2210. Jesus has

  2211. said about

  2212. storing up

  2213. treasures on

  2214. earth and

  2215. judging others.

  2216. You just

  2217. disregarded it.

  2218. You're

  2219. building.

  2220. And over

  2221. time, you

  2222. may build a

  2223. really nice

  2224. looking life

  2225. without obeying

  2226. Jesus' words.

  2227. It may look

  2228. great.

  2229. But here's

  2230. what Jesus

  2231. says.

  2232. Just as

  2233. true as

  2234. every person

  2235. is building,

  2236. there's a

  2237. storm coming.

  2238. torrents of

  2239. rain,

  2240. raising floods,

  2241. blowing winds,

  2242. and in

  2243. verses 25 and

  2244. 27, both

  2245. houses, both

  2246. lives experience

  2247. the storm, and

  2248. what the storm

  2249. reveals is what

  2250. the house is

  2251. built on.

  2252. Now, the

  2253. question we need

  2254. to answer is

  2255. this.

  2256. What do the

  2257. rains, floods,

  2258. and winds

  2259. represent?

  2260. They could

  2261. represent life's

  2262. hardships, the

  2263. trials and

  2264. challenges we all

  2265. deal with, losing

  2266. a child, hearing

  2267. that you've got

  2268. cancer, losing a

  2269. job.

  2270. Both Christian and

  2271. non-Christian

  2272. experience these

  2273. storms of life, and

  2274. they will shake you

  2275. to the core, won't

  2276. they?

  2277. I don't think that's

  2278. what Jesus is

  2279. talking about.

  2280. I don't think he's

  2281. talking about the

  2282. storms of life that

  2283. we all deal with.

  2284. I think he's

  2285. talking about the

  2286. storm of final

  2287. judgment, and

  2288. here's why.

  2289. With every

  2290. option he's

  2291. given so far,

  2292. he's made an

  2293. appeal to final

  2294. judgment.

  2295. There's the path

  2296. that leads to the

  2297. destruction.

  2298. There are the

  2299. false prophets who

  2300. are thrown into the

  2301. fire.

  2302. There are those

  2303. false professors in

  2304. whom Jesus, the

  2305. judge on that day

  2306. says, away from

  2307. me.

  2308. Writing throughout

  2309. Jesus' clothes here

  2310. is this very real

  2311. appeal to final

  2312. judgment.

  2313. When you stand

  2314. before Jesus, and

  2315. so I think he's

  2316. talking about that

  2317. day.

  2318. And Jesus is

  2319. comparing God's

  2320. final judgment to

  2321. a revealing

  2322. storm.

  2323. Christian, you

  2324. will withstand the

  2325. storm.

  2326. Do you know

  2327. why?

  2328. You're standing on

  2329. a rock-solid

  2330. foundation.

  2331. You've built your

  2332. life on Jesus.

  2333. You've come through

  2334. the gate and walked

  2335. the way, and it's

  2336. just right before

  2337. you enter life.

  2338. But if you're a

  2339. non-Christian, that

  2340. collapse which Jesus

  2341. talks about, and it

  2342. fell, and great was

  2343. it fall.

2344. It is a great fall.

  2345. It's the fall that

  2346. comes after final

  2347. judgment and being

  2348. cast out.

  2349. It's the eternal

  2350. collapse.

  2351. two foundations.

  2352. Are you building on

  2353. Jesus' words?

  2354. Are you building your

  2355. life on what Jesus

  2356. says?

  2357. Choose this day to

  2358. obey his words.

  2359. Build your life upon

  2360. Jesus, and you don't

2361. need to fear the storm.

  2362. God's

  2363. salvation.

  2364. We've covered a lot

  2365. of ground this

  2366. morning.

  2367. Two paths, two

  2368. prophets, two

  2369. professors, two

  2370. foundations.

  2371. At the close, in

  2372. verses 28 and 29,

  2373. Jesus finished this

  2374. sermon, and the crowds

  2375. were astonished at his

  2376. teaching.

  2377. Look at verse 29.

  2378. For he was teaching

2379. them as one who had

2380. authority, and not as a

  2381. scribe.

  2382. Is it any wonder

2383. when God shows up and

  2384. he preaches a sermon,

  2385. God incarnate, and he

2386. says, I fulfill the law

2387. and the prophets, and he

  2388. talks about himself as

2389. judge over all, is it no

  2390. wonder that they are

  2391. aware of his divine

  2392. authority?

2393. Are you aware of Jesus'

  2394. divine authority?

  2395. This morning, are you

  2396. aware of his authority?

  2397. More so, have you

  2398. submitted yourself to

  2399. his authority?

  2400. Have you come under

2401. his reign, and are you

  2402. obeying his words?

  2403. Choose this day whom

  2404. you will obey.

2405. It will result in either

  2406. destruction or life.

  2407. Choose Jesus.

  2408. Let's pray.

  2409. Let's pray.

2410. Lord Jesus, I think we

2411. would all say we would

  2412. rather hear you preach

  2413. your sermon.

  2414. But we've heard your

  2415. words this morning, Lord

2416. Jesus, and we pray that

2417. you would do with them as

  2418. you will.

2419. God, would you help us as

2420. your people to walk in

  2421. the narrow path?

2422. And we pray, Father, for

2423. those who are walking on

2424. the broad way, that God,

  2425. they would hear you

  2426. calling to them.

  2427. Lord Jesus, they would

2428. turn and turn to you

  2429. and find life.

2430. God, help us to build

2431. our lives on the rock

  2432. solid foundation of your

  2433. words, Jesus.

2434. In your name we pray.

  2435. Amen.
