  1. Well, a week ago, the Salvati family got into one of our vehicles and we went and got our Christmas tree.

  2. We got it on the other side of 31 and on our way back, we hit Christmas Tree Lane.

  3. Anybody been there yet?

  4. Mm-hmm.

  5. Well, we were driving along looking at the lights and you can't help but notice the different nativity scenes in front lawns

  6. and plastic baby Jesuses all over the place.

  7. And in two lawns in particular, we're going around the cul-de-sac and there are two signs, put Christ back in Christmas.

  8. And it started me thinking, well, how do you get Christ out of Christmas?

  9. And I started thinking and realizing that it's not that hard to do.

  10. If you don't know who the baby is, and if you don't know why he came, Christ is going to leave Christmas.

  11. And you make Christmas about something else.

  12. Something else becomes the central focal point of Christmas.

  13. Maybe it's Santa Claus.

  14. Maybe it's giving and receiving gifts, which is fun.

  15. But if it becomes the primary focus of Christmas, you're missing the point.

  16. Maybe it's about time off, time away.

  17. It's great at Christmastime.

  18. But is that why Jesus came?

  19. Maybe it's about family.

  20. You think about Christmas and you think about family.

  21. And sometimes it's like, yay, let's get together with our family.

  22. Other times it's like, no way, I don't want to be with those people.

  23. Sometimes it's Christmas, the central focus becomes about smells and sounds and tastes.

  24. Sometimes the Christmas season, the primary focus becomes helping other people.

  25. But if you see that as the primary focus of Christmas, you're missing the point.

  26. But Jesus didn't come so that we could see some new releases at Christmastime.

  27. So these things vie for our focus.

  28. And they can occupy kind of the center focus of Christmas.

  29. And we can't let that happen.

  30. The central figure of Christmas is, of course, Jesus.

  31. Christmas is about Jesus.

  32. The incarnation of the second person of the Trinity.

  33. And Christmas is about Jesus.

  34. Jesus is about salvation.

  35. Our salvation.

  36. Christmas, therefore, is about salvation.

  37. Our salvation.

  38. How do we put Christ back into Christmas?

  39. We refocus on who he is and why he came.

  40. And that's what we're going to do this morning.

  41. And that's what we're going to do for the next few Sundays together.

  42. Our theme is, what child is this?

  43. Who is this baby in the manger?

  44. And this morning, we're going to be turning to the Gospel of John.

  45. John chapter 1, verse 14.

    John 1:14

  46. David read the whole prologue, verses 1 through 18.

  47. If you would turn in your Bibles with me to John chapter 1, verse 14.

    John 1:14

  48. I'll read that for you.

  49. John is what's known as a gospel.

  50. It's a story about Jesus.

  51. And so if you're not familiar with the New Testament or the Bible,

  52. you want to get to the New Testament,

  53. just basically open up to the middle and go right.

  54. You're looking for Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  55. I want to get to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  56. Find that little 14.

  57. And here's what it says.

  58. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  59. And we've seen His glory.

  60. Glory as of the only Son from the Father.

  61. Full of grace.

  62. Full of grace and truth.

  63. This morning, I want to answer the question,

  64. what child is this, by looking at John 1.14.

  65. And we're going to have five answers from John 1.14

  66. of who this child is.

  67. What child is this?

  68. This child is the Word made flesh.

  69. This child is fully God, fully man.

  70. This child is fully present with us.

  71. This child is full of glory.

  72. This child is full of grace.

  73. This child is your salvation.

  74. That's what this child is.

  75. What child is this?

  76. First answer to the question.

  77. This child is fully God.

  78. Verse 14,

  79. And the Word became flesh.

  80. And the Word.

  81. Now, if you're not familiar with the Gospel of John,

  82. John actually starts talking about this Word character

  83. earlier on in verses 1 through 5.

  84. Would you look up there with me?

  85. We read this.

  86. In the beginning was the Word.

  87. And the Word was with God.

  88. And the Word was God.

  89. He was in the beginning with God.

  90. All things were made through Him.

  91. And without Him was not anything made that was made.

  92. In Him was life.

  93. And the life was the light of men.

  94. The light shines in the darkness.

  95. And the darkness has not overcome it.

  96. Who is this Word that John is talking about?

  97. This Word who became flesh.

  98. Well, He was in the beginning.

  99. In the beginning was the Word.

  100. And we read that in the beginning was the Word.

  101. And the Word was with God.

  102. Now, I'm guessing there's something going on you

  103. that you know something kind of innately.

  104. But I want to draw it out just to make sure you're seeing it explicitly.

  105. When John says,

  106. In the beginning was the Word.

  107. And the Word was with God.

  108. What he's saying is,

  109. This Word who is a person.

  110. Look at verse 2.

  111. He was in the beginning.

  112. This person, the Word,

  113. was with God.

  114. He was distinct from God,

  115. but present with God in the beginning.

  116. That's what John is saying.

  117. In the beginning,

  118. the Word was the Word,

  119. and the Word was with God.

  120. And as we read in verse 1,

  121. we read,

  122. And the Word was God.

  123. So this Word is distinct from God,

  124. present with God,

  125. and God.

  126. This Word of God is someone unique,

  127. distinct from, present with, and fully God.

  128. All of a sudden,

  129. here we are talking about Christmas

  130. and the incarnation of Jesus,

  131. and we are in the deep end of the swimming pool

  132. talking about the Trinity.

  133. Because that's what John's getting at.

  134. God's eternally existed as three persons.

  135. Each person's fully God.

  136. There's one God.

  137. Did you notice how John reaches back

  138. to the beginning?

  139. In the beginning

  140. was the Word.

  141. And the Word was with God.

  142. And the Word was God.

  143. Why?

  144. Why is he doing this?

  145. Why is he reaching back

  146. to the very beginning?

  147. Matthew doesn't start

  148. at the very beginning.

  149. The Gospel of Luke

  150. doesn't start at the very beginning.

  151. They start at the beginning

  152. of Jesus' life,

  153. on earth.

  154. John starts

  155. way back

  156. in the beginning.

  157. I hope that when you hear

  158. those words,

  159. in the beginning,

  160. you go to

  161. Genesis 1.

  162. Verse 1.

  163. In the beginning,

  164. God created

  165. the heavens

  166. and the earth.

  167. So what John does

  168. that the other Gospels

  169. don't do,

  170. he brings us

  171. all the way back

  172. to creation.

  173. And he's saying,

  174. in the beginning

  175. was the Word.

  176. This person

  177. who is distinct from

  178. but present with

  179. and God,

  180. he was at the beginning.

  181. Do you remember

  182. how God created

  183. the heavens and the earth?

  184. Do you remember

  185. how God created

  186. light out of darkness?

  187. Do you remember

  188. how God created life

  189. out of a lifeless void?

  190. Do you remember

  191. how he did that?

  192. He spoke it.

  193. He spoke it.

  194. In the beginning

  195. was the Word.

  196. When John talks about

  197. in the beginning

  198. was the Word,

  199. he's referring

  200. to a person,

  201. the second person

  202. of the Trinity,

  203. the eternal Son,

  204. who was the agent

  205. of creation.

  206. We read that

  207. in Colossians 1.16.

  208. We also read about that

  209. in Hebrews 1.2.

  210. If you look at

  211. Proverbs 8,

  212. he goes by

  213. the title

  214. Wisdom.

  215. He is the Creator.

  216. And so John

  217. brings us

  218. all the way back

  219. to the beginning

  220. and he's helping us

  221. understand

  222. the Word

  223. who became flesh.

  224. this child

  225. in the manger,

  226. do you know

  227. who he is?

  228. He's your Creator.

  229. He is

  230. fully God.

  231. Verse 3 of chapter 1,

  232. all things were made

  233. through him,

  234. him being the Word.

  235. And without him

  236. was not anything made

  237. that was made.

  238. Everything came

  239. from him.

  240. He's the Creator

  241. of all.

  242. Therefore,

  243. he's your Creator.

  244. So John brings us

  245. all the way back

  246. to the beginning

  247. of creation

  248. and helping us

  249. understand

  250. who this child

  251. is,

  252. this Word

  253. who has become

  254. flesh.

  255. So the child

  256. is the Word

  257. of God,

  258. the Creator,

  259. the one and only

  260. Son,

  261. verse 14,

  262. the second person

  263. of the Trinity,

  264. the one who created

  265. all things,

  266. the one who created

  267. you.

  268. What child is this?

  269. This child is

  270. fully God.

  271. That's answer

  272. number one.

  273. You see,

  274. Christmas is about

  275. the incarnation

  276. of Jesus,

  277. and the incarnation

  278. of Jesus,

  279. it's about

  280. your salvation.

  281. Answer number two,

  282. not only is this

  283. child fully God,

  284. this child is

  285. fully human.

  286. what we're talking

  287. about is the

  288. incarnation of the

  289. second person

  290. of the Trinity,

  291. the incarnation

  292. of Jesus.

  293. And so when you

  294. hear the word

  295. incarnation,

  296. be thinking

  297. infleshing,

  298. the infleshing

  299. of the second

  300. person of the

  301. Trinity.

  302. The Word

  303. became flesh.

  304. God has always

  305. existed as

  306. a triune God.

  307. That's the way

  308. He's always been.

  309. And the second

  310. person of the

  311. Trinity has always

  312. existed as the

  313. Son.

  314. The Father,

  315. the Son,

  316. and the Holy

  317. Spirit,

  318. they've eternally

  319. existed in a

  320. triune communion

  321. forever.

  322. In Luke 135,

  323. we read about

  324. how Jesus,

  325. the second

  326. person of the

  327. Trinity,

  328. was enfleshed.

  329. God the

  330. Father overshadowed

  331. the Virgin Mary

  332. and by the

  333. Holy Spirit,

  334. she conceived

  335. this baby

  336. who's named

  337. Jesus,

  338. the second

  339. person of the

  340. Trinity,

  341. enfleshed

  342. into a

  343. human being.

  344. So here's

  345. what John is

  346. getting at.

  347. The Word

  348. became flesh.

  349. The uncreated

  350. Creator took

  351. on flesh.

  352. He became

  353. a human

  354. being.

  355. God became

  356. man.

  357. Paul in

  358. Philippians 2,

  359. 6,

  360. and 7

  361. addresses it

  362. this way,

  363. the enfleshing

  364. of the second

  365. person of the

  366. Trinity,

  367. who,

  368. though he was

  369. in the form

  370. of God,

  371. did not count

  372. equality with

  373. God a thing

  374. to be grasped,

  375. but made

  376. himself nothing,

  377. taking on the

  378. form of a

  379. servant,

  380. being born in

  381. the likeness of

  382. man,

  383. taking on

  384. flesh.

  385. God became

  386. man.

  387. This week,

  388. as I was

  389. studying,

  390. I came across

  391. this quote,

  392. and I thought

  393. it was very

  394. helpful.

  395. Kind of

  396. explaining the

  397. incarnation and

  398. how the second

  399. person of the

  400. Trinity remained

  401. fully God when

  402. he became fully

  403. man.

  404. It says this,

  405. remaining what

  406. he was,

  407. he became what

  408. he was not.

  409. Remaining what

  410. he was,

  411. he became what

  412. he was not.

  413. Remaining what

  414. he was,

  415. the Word,

  416. fully God,

  417. John 1,

  418. 1 through 3,

  419. he became what

  420. he was not,

  421. fully man.

  422. The Word became

  423. flesh.

  424. So,

  425. here's what this

  426. means about the

  427. person of Jesus

  428. for us.

  429. The person of

  430. Jesus has two

  431. distinct natures.

  432. He's fully God

  433. and he's fully

  434. man.

  435. And,

  436. when we talk

  437. about Jesus

  438. being fully

  439. man,

  440. it's possible

  441. to think that

  442. because he was

  443. fully man,

  444. somehow he ceased

  445. to be fully

  446. God.

  447. That's just not

  448. true.

  449. The 33 years

  450. Jesus lived on

  451. this planet,

  452. he was fully

  453. God.

  454. He did not

  455. cease to be,

  456. in essence,

  457. God at any

  458. point in his

  459. life.

  460. In fact,

  461. to this day,

  462. he remains fully

  463. God and fully

  464. man at the

  465. right hand of

  466. the Father.

  467. God.

  468. So,

  469. we can't make

  470. the mistake

  471. that,

  472. thinking that

  473. when Jesus

  474. became a man,

  475. somehow he

  476. became less

  477. God.

  478. No,

  479. he's fully

  480. God.

  481. And the other

  482. side of it is

  483. this.

  484. If we understand

  485. Jesus to be

  486. fully God,

  487. we can start

  488. thinking,

  489. well,

  490. somehow he was

  491. less man.

  492. He wasn't

  493. fully man if

  494. he was fully

  495. God.

  496. Somehow he's

  497. less human.

  498. human.

  499. He was fully

  500. human in

  501. every way.

  502. But you

  503. might be

  504. thinking,

  505. maybe you're

  506. familiar with

  507. the teachings

  508. of Christianity

  509. and you start

  510. thinking,

  511. well,

  512. I know that

  513. what the

  514. Bible teaches

  515. is that Jesus

  516. never sinned

  517. and,

  518. you know,

  519. to err is

  520. human,

  521. to sin is

  522. human,

  523. and so,

  524. obviously,

  525. he's not

  526. fully human

  527. if he never

  528. sinned.

  529. Well,

  530. that assumes

  531. something.

  532. But let me

  533. just remind

  534. you,

  535. of this,

  536. sin is

  537. not always,

  538. it's not

  539. always been

  540. essential to

  541. our humanity.

  542. Sin has

  543. become a

  544. part of our

  545. human experience.

  546. It has

  547. become part

  548. of our

  549. nature

  550. because of

  551. the fall.

  552. Paul talks

  553. about it in

  554. Romans 5.

  555. We've inherited

  556. the sinful

  557. nature from

  558. Adam.

  559. But it

  560. wasn't always

  561. the case.

  562. When God

  563. created Adam

  564. and Eve,

  565. he created

  566. a man and

  567. woman in

  568. his likeness

  569. without sin.

  570. And so,

  571. they had

  572. sinless

  573. communion with

  574. God and

  575. each other

  576. in the

  577. garden.

  578. It's

  579. possible to

  580. be human

  581. without sinning.

  582. And then,

  583. there's going to

  584. come a day

  585. when all of

  586. us who put

  587. our faith in

  588. Jesus,

  589. when we are,

  590. when our

  591. faith becomes

  592. sight.

  593. And we're in

  594. the presence

  595. of Jesus

  596. himself.

  597. And our

  598. indwelling

  599. sin is

  600. removed from

  601. us.

  602. We are going

  603. to experience

  604. sinless

  605. communion with

  606. God and

  607. each other

  608. and even

  609. ourselves.

  610. And we're

  611. going to be

  612. fully human.

  613. And so,

  614. to think

  615. that sin

  616. is necessarily

  617. essential to

  618. our human

  619. experience,

  620. forget some

  621. things.

  622. So,

  623. when Jesus

  624. was born

  625. and became

  626. fully human,

  627. even though

  628. he was without

  629. sin,

  630. he was fully

  631. human.

  632. Actually,

  633. I just want

  634. to be honest

  635. with you,

  636. he became

  637. fully human

  638. because of

  639. our sinfulness.

  640. It was

  641. because that

  642. we were

  643. sinning and

  644. sinning against

  645. God that

  646. the second

  647. person of

  648. the Trinity

  649. took on

  650. flesh and

  651. dwelt among

  652. us.

  653. This

  654. indwelling

  655. of the

  656. second person

  657. of the

  658. Trinity as

  659. a man

  660. was part

  661. of God's

  662. plan of

  663. salvation from

  664. the beginning

  665. of time,

  666. from before

  667. the foundation

  668. of the world.

  669. God had

  670. set this

  671. rescue mission

  672. in motion.

  673. Galatians 4,

  674. 4-5,

  675. we read this,

  676. but when the

  677. fullness of

  678. time came,

  679. when it was

  680. right according

  681. to plan,

  682. God sent

  683. forth His

  684. Son,

  685. born of a

  686. woman,

  687. born under

  688. the law,

  689. to redeem

  690. those under

  691. the law,

  692. so that we

  693. might receive

  694. adoption as

  695. sons.

  696. Jesus came

  697. in order to

  698. save.

  699. It's in His

  700. name to

  701. save a

  702. people from

  703. their sins.

  704. So when we

  705. read that

  706. phrase,

  707. the Word

  708. became flesh,

  709. and we think

  710. about the

  711. second person

  712. of the Trinity

  713. becoming a

  714. man, it's

  715. amazing in

  716. itself that

  717. God would

  718. do that,

  719. right?

  720. What other

  721. God has

  722. done that?

  723. But He

  724. didn't do it

  725. just to do

  726. it.

  727. He became a

  728. man in order

  729. to save.

  730. To save you.

  731. To save me.

  732. To offer

  733. salvation to our

  734. city, and to

  735. our nation, and

  736. to our world.

  737. So one of the

  738. things that this

  739. means is this.

  740. This Christmas,

  741. Christmas is

  742. bigger than a

  743. shopping season.

  744. It's bigger than

  745. a shopping season.

  746. This is about

  747. God becoming a

  748. man in order to

  749. save sinners.

  750. That's what it's

  751. about.

  752. The Savior of the

  753. world, He came

  754. in order to

  755. broker peace.

  756. He's the perfect

  757. mediator between

  758. God and man.

  759. He's fully God

  760. and fully man.

  761. And in order to

  762. reconcile us

  763. sinners to a

  764. holy God, He

  765. became a man.

  766. Remaining what

  767. He was, He

  768. became what He

  769. was not.

  770. In order to

  771. offer us

  772. salvation.

  773. All part of

  774. God's plan.

  775. Christmas is

  776. about the

  777. incarnation of

  778. Jesus and the

  779. incarnation of

  780. Jesus is all

  781. about your

  782. salvation.

  783. The third

  784. answer to the

  785. question.

  786. We've looked at

  787. this child's fully

  788. God.

  789. He's fully human.

  790. This child is

  791. God fully

  792. present with His

  793. people.

  794. The word became

  795. flesh and

  796. dwelt among us.

  797. That word dwelt

  798. is a really

  799. interesting word in

  800. the original language

  801. of the New Testament.

  802. It literally means

  803. to pitch a tent.

  804. Like, you know,

  805. you go camping,

  806. you strike up your

  807. tent, pitch a tent,

  808. to dwell among,

  809. to tabernacle.

  810. That's what that

  811. word dwell means.

  812. And John is being

  813. very intentional.

  814. He's wanting to

  815. bring something to

  816. our minds when he

  817. says the word became

  818. flesh and pitched his

  819. tent among us.

  820. You know, there's

  821. one way you can

  822. summarize the entire

  823. Bible.

  824. And you can

  825. summarize the entire

  826. Bible by saying it

  827. like this.

  828. The Bible is the

  829. story about God

  830. dwelling with a

  831. people.

  832. It's about a holy

  833. God dwelling with a

  834. sinful people and

  835. of what God had to

  836. do in order to

  837. provide grace upon

  838. grace so that a

  839. sinful people can be

  840. in His presence.

  841. So the Bible is a

  842. story of God

  843. dwelling with His

  844. people.

  845. You see it in Adam

  846. and Eve in the

  847. garden.

  848. Adam and Eve were

  849. in God's presence

  850. in His place.

  851. The garden.

  852. They sinned.

  853. They got expelled.

  854. Israel was

  855. delivered out of

  856. the captivity to

  857. Egypt.

  858. Do you remember

  859. how they were

  860. led out by a

  861. pillar of cloud

  862. by day and a

  863. pillar of fire

  864. by night?

  865. It was God in

  866. their midst.

  867. God dwelling with

  868. His people to

  869. deliver them.

  870. to lead them.

  871. It doesn't end

  872. there.

  873. At Mount Sinai,

  874. God gives His

  875. people, Israel,

  876. the law.

  877. He gives His

  878. people a

  879. sacrificial system

  880. in order that

  881. they can be in

  882. relationship with

  883. Him, a holy

  884. God.

  885. It governed their

  886. relationship with

  887. Him.

  888. And in Exodus

  889. 25, we read that

  890. God gave His people

  891. some very specific

  892. instructions about

  893. building Him a

  894. very fancy tent.

  895. It's called

  896. a tabernacle.

  897. They were to

  898. pitch that tent

  899. wherever they

  900. would go.

  901. And it was made

  902. out of wood.

  903. It was made out

  904. of fabric.

  905. It was made out

  906. of animal hines.

  907. And in Exodus

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  908. chapter 33, we

  909. read about God

  910. in a cloud of

  911. His glory coming

  912. down and dwelling

  913. at the entrance

  914. of this tent

  915. of meeting,

  916. the tabernacle,

  917. and Him talking

  918. with Moses face

  919. to face as with

  920. a friend.

  921. God dwelling

  922. with His people.

  923. It's just the next

  924. chapter that we

  925. read about God's

  926. kind of self-

  927. revelation of who

  928. He is.

  929. He says this

  930. about Himself

  931. to Moses.

  932. The Lord passed

  933. before Moses and

  934. proclaimed,

  935. The Lord,

  936. the Lord,

  937. a God merciful

  938. and gracious,

  939. slow to anger,

  940. and abounding in

  941. steadfast love and

  942. faithfulness.

  943. Do you know

  944. there's another way

  945. you can talk about

  946. steadfast love and

  947. faithfulness?

  948. It's a God who's

  949. abounding in grace

  950. and truth.

  951. God has always

  952. sought to dwell

  953. with His people.

  954. In 1 Kings 8,

  955. there's a new way

  956. in which God

  957. dwells with His

  958. people.

  959. Solomon,

  960. David's son,

  961. builds a temple

  962. in Jerusalem.

  963. And what we read

  964. about in 1 Kings 8

  965. is the priests

  966. bring up out

  967. of the tabernacle

  968. the Ark of the

  969. Covenant,

  970. which is believed

  971. to be God

  972. dwelling on the

  973. top of the

  974. mercy seat of

  975. that Ark of the

  976. Covenant.

  977. And these priests

  978. brought out the

  979. Ark of the Covenant

  980. from the Holy of

  981. Holies in the

  982. tabernacle,

  983. and they brought it

  984. out, and they

  985. brought it into

  986. this newly

  987. constructed temple

  988. made out of

  989. just stone and

  990. beautiful woodwork

  991. and gold all over

  992. the place.

  993. And they brought it

  994. in from the Holy

  995. Place into the

  996. Holy of Holies,

  997. and they set it

  998. between these

  999. gigantic angels

  1000. with outstretched

  1001. wings called

  1002. cherubim,

  1003. and they set

  1004. the Ark down,

  1005. and do you know

  1006. what happened?

  1007. The cloud of the

  1008. glory of God

  1009. filled the temple.

  1010. God came and

  1011. dwelt among His

  1012. people in His

  1013. place in the

  1014. temple in Jerusalem.

  1015. The story of the

  1016. Bible is about God

  1017. dwelling with His

  1018. people.

  1019. And then it gets

  1020. tragic.

  1021. in Ezekiel.

  1022. Ezekiel has this

  1023. vision of the

  1024. temple in chapters

  1025. 10 and 11.

  1026. There's abominations

  1027. taking place.

  1028. God's people are

  1029. going AWOL with

  1030. their God.

  1031. And you know

  1032. what Ezekiel sees?

  1033. He sees the glory

  1034. of the Lord,

  1035. this cloud,

  1036. gradually removing

  1037. Himself from the

  1038. Holy of Holies,

  1039. gradually removing

  1040. Himself from the

  1041. Holy place,

  1042. gradually removing

  1043. Himself from the

  1044. temple itself,

  1045. from dwelling with

  1046. God's people.

  1047. The story of the

  1048. Bible is about God

  1049. dwelling with His

  1050. people.

1051. By the close of the

  1052. Old Testament, we're

  1053. asking the question,

  1054. is God talking

  1055. anymore?

  1056. Is God with His

  1057. people anymore?

  1058. 400 years of

  1059. silence.

  1060. And then,

  1061. Luke chapters 1 and

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  1062. 2, Matthew chapter

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  1063. 1, John 1, 14.

  1064. God comes and dwells

1065. with His people in a

  1066. new way.

  1067. God pitches His tent

1068. with His people in a

  1069. new way.

  1070. Jesus, the second

  1071. person of the

  1072. Trinity, pitches His

  1073. tent to dwell with

  1074. His people.

  1075. And the tent that's

  1076. been pitched is not

  1077. made out of fabric,

1078. it's not made out of

  1079. animal hides, it's not

  1080. made out of massive

  1081. blocks of stone.

  1082. The tent that was

  1083. pitched is the tent

  1084. of human flesh.

  1085. God dwelt among His

  1086. people by becoming

  1087. one of us.

  1088. The incarnation is

  1089. about God dwelling

  1090. among us.

  1091. Christmas is about

  1092. Jesus, and Jesus is

  1093. about our salvation.

  1094. He pitched His tent

1095. among us to save us.

  1096. What child is this?

  1097. Well, He's the second

  1098. person of the Trinity,

  1099. fully God.

  1100. He's fully man.

  1101. And He came and

  1102. dwelt fully among us.

  1103. Jesus, after His death

  1104. and resurrection,

  1105. ascended to heaven

  1106. where He's right now

1107. at the right hand of

  1108. the Father.

  1109. Fully God, fully man.

1110. And right now, do you

  1111. know what?

  1112. Know what the Bible

  1113. talks about?

  1114. As the dwelling place

  1115. of God?

  1116. We are the dwelling

  1117. place of God.

  1118. The new temple is

  1119. God's people.

  1120. We are the dwelling

1121. place of God by the

  1122. Holy Spirit.

  1123. And there's going to

1124. come a day when Jesus

  1125. comes back and it's

  1126. going to, His, the

  1127. final dwelling place of

1128. God with man is the

  1129. new Jerusalem in which

1130. we will be seeing our

  1131. King face to face.

1132. He's going to light up

  1133. the joint.

1134. It's just going to get

  1135. better.

1136. The story of the Bible

1137. is a story of God

  1138. pitching His tent among

  1139. His people.

  1140. God dwelling fully with

  1141. us.

  1142. Answer number four, this

1143. child is full of glory.

  1144. John 1.14, we read,

  1145. and the word became

  1146. flesh and dwelt among

  1147. us.

  1148. He pitched His tent.

1149. And we have seen His

  1150. glory.

1151. Glory as of the only

  1152. Son from the Father.

1153. So the storyline of the

  1154. Bible is God dwelling

1155. with His people and the

1156. glory of God shows up

  1157. time and again.

  1158. They're called

  1159. theophanies.

  1160. Appearances of God.

  1161. The cloud of God's

  1162. glory leading Israel out

  1163. of Egypt.

  1164. Theophany.

  1165. Theophany.

  1166. The cloud descending.

  1167. The tabernacle in

  1168. Exodus 33.

  1169. Theophany.

  1170. The filling of the

  1171. temple in 1 Kings 8.

  1172. Theophany.

  1173. I don't know what

  1174. Ezekiel 10 and 11 is.

  1175. It's kind of a theophany,

  1176. but it's kind of a

  1177. backwards theophany.

  1178. God departing.

  1179. Theophanies are

  1180. appearances of God's

1181. glory in what John 1.14

  1182. is saying is this.

  1183. That when the second

  1184. person of the Trinity

1185. became a man, it was

  1186. the ultimate theophany

  1187. of God.

  1188. The ultimate showing up

  1189. of God Most High.

  1190. The ultimate theophany.

  1191. John 1.14 talks about

1192. a glory as the only

  1193. Son of the Father.

1194. That word only is a

  1195. very special word

  1196. throughout your Bible.

  1197. Some of the earlier

  1198. versions talk about the

  1199. only begotten Son.

  1200. It's talking about the

  1201. one and only, the

  1202. unique Son of God.

1203. And when John uses it,

  1204. it's only of Jesus.

1205. So we see it showing up

  1206. in 1.14.

  1207. The only Son.

  1208. You see that word

  1209. showing up in 1.18.

  1210. The only God

  1211. referencing Jesus.

  1212. It shows up in

  1213. John 3.16.

1214. For God so loved the

  1215. world that He sent

  1216. His one and only

  1217. unique Son.

  1218. That whoever believes

1219. in Him shall not perish

  1220. but have eternal life.

1221. There is a unique glory

  1222. on display in the

  1223. person of Jesus.

  1224. Here's how it works.

  1225. God.

  1226. Instead of beholding God

  1227. in the written word

  1228. of revelation,

  1229. what Jesus did was

  1230. reveal God

  1231. in a living word

  1232. of revelation.

  1233. In His person,

  1234. in His life,

  1235. in His work.

  1236. It's a whole new medium.

  1237. He pitched His tent.

  1238. He walked among us

  1239. to John 1.18.

  1240. Make known God.

  1241. To literally

  1242. exegete the Father.

  1243. Big word.

  1244. It means to

  1245. make known.

  1246. The author of Hebrews

  1247. talks about Jesus

  1248. as the radiance

  1249. of the glory

  1250. of God.

  1251. And the exact imprint

  1252. of His nature.

  1253. You know,

  1254. there's this guy,

  1255. Philip.

  1256. He was a follower

  1257. of Jesus.

  1258. And in John 14,

  1259. he makes this request.

1260. Lord, show us the Father.

1261. And what does Jesus say?

  1262. He says,

1263. Have I been with you

  1264. so long

  1265. and you still

  1266. do not know me,

  1267. Philip?

  1268. And then you know

  1269. what he says?

  1270. Whoever has seen me

  1271. has seen the Father.

  1272. Look at John 1.18.

  1273. No one has ever

  1274. seen God the Father.

  1275. The only God,

  1276. the Son,

1277. who is at the Father's side,

  1278. distinct from,

  1279. but present with.

1280. He has made Him known.

1281. You want to get to know God?

1282. You want to see Him?

  1283. You look to Jesus.

  1284. You look to Jesus.

  1285. You look to Jesus.

  1286. All throughout John,

  1287. we read about these

  1288. manifestations of glory.

  1289. When Jesus

  1290. performed the miracle

  1291. in John 2

  1292. of changing the water

  1293. into wine,

  1294. 2.11,

  1295. John says

  1296. that that was

  1297. a manifestation of glory.

  1298. Showing glory.

  1299. glory.

  1300. In John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  1301. Jesus hears about

  1302. Lazarus' death

1303. and you know what He says?

  1304. You know what?

  1305. Don't freak out.

1306. This is going to be

  1307. for showing the glory

  1308. of God.

  1309. And right before

  1310. He calls Lazarus out

  1311. in 11.40,

  1312. He tells Martha,

  1313. hey,

1314. this is for the glory

  1315. of God

1316. so that you would believe.

  1317. Lazarus,

  1318. come forth!

  1319. Come forth!

  1320. And He came forth.

  1321. You know,

  1322. glory is on display

  1323. all throughout

  1324. the Gospel of John.

1325. And so we see it

  1326. in Cana,

  1327. water to wine.

1328. We see it in Bethany.

  1329. Jesus raises Lazarus

  1330. from the dead.

  1331. But you know what?

  1332. Those displays of glory,

  1333. they pale

  1334. in comparison

  1335. to the ultimate

  1336. display of glory

  1337. by Jesus

  1338. on the cross.

  1339. That's where we're moving

  1340. in John.

  1341. The cross

  1342. is the ultimate display

  1343. of God's glory.

  1344. The incarnation

  1345. of Jesus

  1346. is absolutely

  1347. linked

  1348. to the crucifixion

  1349. of Jesus.

  1350. He became flesh

  1351. in order to die

  1352. in your place

  1353. on the cross.

  1354. The death

  1355. on the cross

  1356. displays

  1357. God's glory

  1358. by demonstrating

  1359. God's love

  1360. and His justice

  1361. simultaneously.

  1362. In the death

  1363. of Jesus

  1364. on the cross,

  1365. Jesus

  1366. fully satisfied

  1367. God's

  1368. holy wrath

  1369. for our sin

  1370. justice.

  1371. And simultaneously,

  1372. He reconciles

  1373. us to the Father

  1374. as sons

  1375. and daughters.

  1376. Love!

  1377. He is full

  1378. of grace

  1379. and truth.

  1380. Full of grace

  1381. and truth.

  1382. The salvation

  1383. Jesus accomplished

  1384. on the cross

  1385. puts God's glory

  1386. on display

  1387. in a way

  1388. that turning water

  1389. into wine

  1390. doesn't.

  1391. In a way

  1392. that raising

  1393. someone from the dead

  1394. doesn't.

  1395. Jesus

  1396. took care

  1397. of God's wrath

  1398. for our sin

  1399. and takes us

  1400. as His own.

  1401. The incarnation

  1402. is necessary.

  1403. It's necessary

  1404. to God's plan

  1405. of salvation.

  1406. It's absolutely

  1407. vital.

  1408. It moves us

  1409. to the cross

  1410. of Jesus Christ.

  1411. Christmas

  1412. is about

  1413. the incarnation

  1414. of Jesus

  1415. and the incarnation

  1416. of Jesus

  1417. is all about

  1418. salvation

  1419. and salvation

  1420. is all about

  1421. the cross.

  1422. The fifth

  1423. and final answer

  1424. to the question

  1425. what child

  1426. is this

  1427. is that

  1428. this child

  1429. is full

  1430. of grace.

  1431. full of grace

  1432. for you.

  1433. In John 1.14

  1434. and the word

  1435. became flesh

  1436. and dwelt among us

  1437. and we've seen

  1438. His glory

  1439. glory as of

  1440. the only Son

  1441. from the Father

  1442. full of grace

  1443. and truth.

  1444. 16

  1445. and from His fullness

  1446. we've all received

  1447. grace upon grace.

  1448. 17

  1449. for the law

  1450. was given

  1451. through Moses

  1452. grace and truth

  1453. came through

  1454. Jesus Christ.

  1455. Grace upon grace

  1456. grace

  1457. in the place

  1458. of grace.

  1459. The revelation

  1460. through Moses

  1461. is superseded

  1462. by the revelation

  1463. that came through

  1464. Jesus.

  1465. It's a greater grace.

  1466. God's grace

  1467. is His unearned

  1468. kindness

  1469. His unmerited

  1470. favor

  1471. it's His

  1472. unobligated

  1473. generosity

  1474. to people

  1475. who are sinning

  1476. against Him.

  1477. And it's

  1478. transformative.

  1479. Jesus didn't

  1480. come in the flesh

1481. and hang on the cross

  1482. because He had to

  1483. because He was

  1484. obligated.

  1485. He did so

  1486. voluntarily

  1487. out of love

  1488. for you.

  1489. The salvation

  1490. He offers

  1491. is a salvation

  1492. He paid for

  1493. in full

  1494. at the cross.

  1495. It's all

  1496. by grace.

  1497. It's different

  1498. than any other

  1499. religion on the planet.

  1500. He doesn't expect

  1501. for you to

  1502. work for it.

  1503. You can't.

  1504. His grace

  1505. is a grace

  1506. that's received.

  1507. He offers

  1508. fullness

  1509. of life

  1510. to know Him

  1511. to live for Him

  1512. and to live

  1513. for Him

  1514. forever.

  1515. He offers

  1516. forgiveness.

  1517. He offers

  1518. peace

  1519. and joy

  1520. love for others.

  1521. this is salvation

  1522. that He offers

  1523. at the cross.

  1524. It's not a gift

1525. for you to pay for.

  1526. Could you imagine

1527. you open up a gift

  1528. on Christmas Day

1529. and when you open it up

  1530. it's your favorite thing

1531. and you pull it out

  1532. and underneath it

  1533. there's a bill

1534. for you to pay for it?

  1535. Could you imagine that?

  1536. He'd be like

1537. this is not a gift.

  1538. I'm paying for it.

  1539. Could you imagine

  1540. Jesus offering you salvation

  1541. and you pull out

  1542. your checkbook

  1543. and you're like

1544. what do I owe you?

  1545. It's not a gift

  1546. at that point.

  1547. God offers you salvation

  1548. in Jesus freely.

  1549. It's been paid for

  1550. in full

  1551. by Jesus Himself

  1552. at the cross.

  1553. and you receive it

  1554. by faith.

  1555. There are two ways

  1556. to respond

  1557. to this gracious

  1558. gift of salvation

  1559. that Jesus offers you.

  1560. You can reject it

1561. or you can receive it.

1562. You see that working out

  1563. in verses 11 and 12.

1564. He came to His own

  1565. and His own people

  1566. did not receive Him.

  1567. They rejected Him.

  1568. Verse 12

1569. But all who did receive Him

1570. who believed in His name

  1571. He gave the right

1572. to become children of God.

  1573. You're either going to

  1574. reject Him

  1575. or you're going to

  1576. receive Him.

  1577. And if you haven't

  1578. received Him

  1579. you're rejecting Him.

  1580. So the question is

1581. how do you receive Him?

  1582. You receive Him

  1583. by faith.

  1584. By believing

  1585. in His name.

  1586. So here you are

  1587. this morning

  1588. in this building.

  1589. December 4th

  1590. talking about Jesus

  1591. the incarnation.

  1592. Have you received Him?

  1593. Have you received

  1594. the greatest gift

  1595. ever given?

  1596. The gift of salvation

  1597. that's in Christ alone.

1598. Christmas is all about Jesus

1599. and Jesus is all about salvation.

  1600. What child is this?

  1601. He's fully God.

  1602. He's fully man.

1603. He's fully present with us.

  1604. He's full of glory

1605. and He is full of grace.

  1606. Let's put Christ

  1607. back into Christmas.

  1608. Let's put Christmas

  1609. back into God's plan

  1610. of salvation.

  1611. That's what gives it

  1612. its full meaning.

  1613. What child is this?

  1614. He is your salvation.

  1615. Let's pray.

  1616. Oh God in heaven

  1617. thank you so much

  1618. for John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

1619. Father thank you so much

1620. for sending the Son Jesus

  1621. as the perfect mediator

  1622. between God and man.

  1623. The greatest gift

  1624. ever given.

  1625. I pray that we

  1626. as your people

  1627. God would live

  1628. in full view

  1629. of the significance

  1630. of Christmas.

  1631. It's about Jesus

  1632. and Jesus

  1633. is about salvation.

  1634. God would you

  1635. bless

  1636. the remainder

  1637. of this day

  1638. for the glory

  1639. of your name.

  1640. Amen.
