  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Colossians chapter 1, we're going to be looking at verses 15 through 20 this morning.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  2. And as you're turning there, I just want to let you know what my family and I watched last night on TV.

  3. The 1964 claymation classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

  4. You know it.

  5. Rudolph, with his nose so bright, remember he was a misfit from the start.

  6. Yukon Cornelius, do you remember Yukon Cornelius?

  7. That greatest prospector of the north.

  8. And he's very quirky.

  9. And then there was that elf named Hermie.

  10. He didn't like building toys.

  11. He wanted to be a dentist.

  12. Well, the story goes that these misfits are trying to find their place in life.

  13. And eventually, Rudolph, Yukon, and Hermie, they come across a body of water to a land of misfit toys.

  14. Odd toys that no child would ever want.

  15. Living in exile on the island of misfit toys.

  16. The greatest desire of these toys is to be loved by a child.

  17. And eventually, Rudolph and his gang, with the help of Santa Claus, of course, they take action.

  18. And they reconcile these misfit toys to the children who would love them unconditionally.

  19. Now, I think we can all identify with being a misfit.

  20. We've all got our unique quirks, don't we?

  21. And we all desire to be loved despite our quirks and oddities.

  22. So we're all misfits in one sense.

  23. But we're not misfit toys, are we?

  24. Now, God in his word takes our misfitness.

  25. And he takes it one step further than this 1964 claymation special.

  26. Yes, God acknowledges our quirks.

  27. But God in his word says we have a deep, dark, deadly disobedience problem called sin.

  28. Sin is rebellion against God.

  29. It's a prideful unwillingness to obey him, to live for him.

  30. And so, in light of that, humanity is one big island of misfit sinners living in rebellion to the God who created us.

  31. It's also known as the world.

  32. Our sin has separated us from the God who created us.

  33. Sin ruptured our relationship with the one true God.

  34. And because of our sin, hostility entered our experience.

  35. God is hostile towards our sin.

  36. And not only was sin affecting our relationship with God, sin ruptured our experience of ourselves.

  37. Have you ever heard someone say, I hate myself?

  38. And it's not just within ourselves, it's relationships with other people.

  39. Sin ruptures relationships.

  40. Do you know why the holidays are often hard for people being with their family?

  41. Because sin has ruptured relationships.

  42. And of course, sin has ruptured our relationship with the rest of creation.

  43. Adam and Eve, in the garden, they work the land with ease and peace.

  44. But after they sinned, it was toil and hostility, sweat and threat.

  45. As sinners, our disobedience to God has resulted in a comprehensive hostility in all of our relationships.

  46. It's got a cosmic reach.

  47. But the very God who we sinned against, out of an unconditional love for us,

  48. God's plan to reconcile sinners back to himself took a decisive step 2,000 years ago.

  49. I don't know how much the baby Jesus weighed when he was born.

  50. Six pounds?

  51. Seven pounds?

  52. Maybe eight pounds?

  53. But when that seven pound baby was born to a virgin in a town six miles outside of Jerusalem,

  54. it was a turning point in history.

  55. When that baby was born, God's plan took a decisive turn.

  56. What child is this?

  57. What child is this born unto us?

  58. If you're looking at Colossians 1, verses 15 through 20,

    Colossians 1:15–20

  59. Paul says this is who this child is.

  60. Let me read it for us.

  61. He is the image of the invisible God,

  62. the firstborn of all creation,

  63. for by him all things were created in heaven and on earth,

  64. visible and invisible,

  65. whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities,

  66. all things were created through him and for him.

  67. And he's before all things.

  68. And in him all things hold together.

  69. What child is this?

  70. And he is the head of the body, the church.

  71. He's the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,

  72. that in everything he might be preeminent.

  73. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell

  74. and through him to reconcile to himself all things,

  75. whether on earth or in heaven,

  76. making peace by the blood of his cross.

  77. Verses 15 through 20 are known as a hymn that exalts Christ.

  78. And Paul has placed it here at the beginning of Ephesians,

  79. Colossians, to help this Colossian Christians

  80. understand rightly who this Christ is

  81. so that they can discern false teaching.

  82. There are two moves, two main parts to this hymn

  83. in verses 15 through 20.

  84. The first is Christ is the creator of all.

  85. We see that in verses 15 through 17.

  86. And the second part is Christ is the reconciler of all.

  87. And then we see that in verses 18 through 20.

  88. Another way you can say it is this.

  89. Christ is Lord of all.

  90. He's the creator of all.

  91. He's the reconciler of all.

  92. He's preeminent over all.

  93. He's Lord of all.

  94. Now, this morning I want to ask you a question.

  95. Do you know who this child is born in the manger,

  96. born in this stable,

  97. this dark-haired baby boy,

  98. born in some stable for animals in Bethlehem?

  99. Do you not realize who he is?

  100. He's the creator of all, your creator.

  101. He's the reconciler of all.

  102. He made a way for you to be at peace with God.

  103. What child is this?

  104. He's Lord of all.

  105. Is he your Lord?

  106. Let's look at this first part.

  107. He's the creator of all, verses 15 through 17.

  108. Now, I'm going to point you to two titles

  109. and a handful of prepositions.

  110. Okay, you ready?

  111. Let's look at it.

  112. He is the image of the invisible God.

  113. That's the first title.

  114. He is the image of the invisible God.

  115. When you read that, that word image,

  116. it actually is a translation of a Greek word.

  117. And I'm going to teach it to you this morning.

  118. It's the Greek word icon.

  119. Can you say that?

  120. Say icon.

  121. One, two, three.

  122. Icon.

  123. And it is referring back to the Son.

  124. In Colossians 1, 13, and 14, we read,

  125. God has delivered us from the domain of darkness

  126. and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son

  127. in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  128. This beloved Son, he is the icon of the invisible God.

  129. Now, back in the day when I was working on my computer,

  130. you know, maybe 10 years ago,

  131. we didn't call them apps.

  132. What we saw on the computer screen, we called icons,

  133. and they were visible representatives

  134. of the programs running on your computer.

  135. So if you wanted to open it,

  136. you clicked on the icon and you got to your program.

  137. So it's possible to think here

  138. that Jesus is the visible representation of God.

  139. He's the icon of the invisible God.

  140. And that's true.

  141. But it goes beyond that.

  142. Jesus is not just a visible representation of God.

  143. He is fully God in the flesh.

  144. Just take a look at verse 19.

  145. We read,

  146. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

  147. Now look at chapter 2, verse 9.

  148. We read this.

  149. For in him, Christ,

  150. the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.

  151. The image of the invisible God,

  152. the icon of God,

  153. is God himself in the flesh.

  154. And so how is this being used?

  155. Well, icon is a title.

  156. And it's got a lot of similarities

  157. with what the passage we were looking at last week.

  158. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  159. talking about the Word.

  160. In the beginning was the Word,

  161. and the Word was with God,

  162. and the Word was God.

  163. That was a title.

  164. Word.

  165. So when Paul talks about Jesus

  166. as the image of the invisible God,

  167. the icon of God,

  168. he is saying that Jesus

  169. is the physical embodiment

  170. of all the fullness of God.

  171. He is the invisible God made visible.

  172. It would be akin to what John says

  173. in John 1.18,

  174. where the Word is described as

  175. making known the Father

  176. who has never been seen.

  177. So Jesus is the ultimate image of God.

  178. When you become a Christian,

  179. when you put your faith in Jesus,

  180. when you turn from sin

  181. and turn to Christ,

  182. God calls you

  183. to become more and more like Jesus.

  184. to be more and more

  185. formed into His image.

  186. If you look at just chapter 3, verse 10,

  187. you read this.

  188. And put on the new self,

  189. which is being renewed in the knowledge

  190. after the image of its creator,

  191. the creator being Jesus.

  192. Jesus.

  193. This first title

  194. kind of unpacks the relationship

  195. Jesus has to God the Father.

  196. He's the second person of the Trinity.

  197. Jesus is the visible manifestation

  198. of the invisible God,

  199. fully divine,

  200. fully human.

  201. Now let's look at the second title.

  202. He is the firstborn of all creation.

  203. See that?

  204. He's the image of the invisible God,

  205. the firstborn of all creation.

  206. In verses 15 through 16,

  207. there's a repeated word.

  208. It's the word creation or created.

  209. He's the firstborn of all creation.

  210. For by Him all things were created.

  211. And then at the end of 16,

  212. all things were created through Him

  213. and for Him.

  214. Paul is focusing on the relationship

  215. between the second person of the Trinity

  216. made incarnate

  217. to the rest of creation.

  218. And he moves from talking about

  219. Jesus as the icon of the invisible God

  220. to the firstborn of all creation.

  221. And we've got to be clear

  222. on what Paul means by firstborn.

  223. Because it's possible

  224. that when you read

  225. the firstborn of all creation,

  226. you can conclude

  227. that Jesus,

  228. the second person,

  229. is the first to be created

  230. in all of creation.

  231. But that would be a mistake.

  232. And that's not a mistake

  233. that's just made today

  234. by Jehovah's Witnesses,

  235. for example.

  236. It's a mistake that was made

  237. back in the fourth century

  238. by a guy named Arius

  239. who taught this.

  240. This is a quote.

  241. He said of Jesus,

  242. there was a time

  243. when the Son was not.

  244. So Arius denied the Trinity

  245. on the basis that Jesus,

  246. the Son,

  247. was a created being.

  248. And so what he taught

  249. became known as the

  250. Arian heresy,

  251. which just simply means

  252. false teaching.

  253. And the Council of Nicaea,

  254. it's a church council

  255. in 325,

  256. they denounced it.

  257. And out of that council

  258. came what's called

  259. the Nicene Creed.

  260. And the Nicene Creed

  261. is just a restatement

  262. of biblical truth

  263. for the good of God's people.

  264. And this is,

  265. let me just read you

  266. a little part

  267. of the Nicene Creed.

  268. It says,

  269. I believe in one God,

  270. the Father Almighty,

  271. maker of heaven and earth,

  272. and of all things

  273. visible and invisible,

  274. and in one Lord,

  275. Jesus Christ,

  276. the only begotten

  277. Son of God,

  278. begotten of the Father

  279. before all worlds,

  280. God of God,

  281. light of light,

  282. very God of very God,

  283. begotten,

  284. not made,

  285. being of one substance

  286. with the Father

  287. by whom all things

  288. were made,

  289. who, Jesus,

  290. for us,

  291. men of our salvation,

  292. came down from heaven

  293. and was incarnate

  294. by the Holy Spirit

  295. of the Virgin Mary

  296. and was made man

  297. and was crucified

  298. also for us

  299. under Pontius Pilate.

  300. He suffered

  301. and was buried

  302. and on the third day

  303. he rose again

  304. according to the Scriptures

  305. and ascended into heaven

  306. and sits on the right hand

  307. of the Father

  308. and he shall come again

  309. and with glory

  310. to judge the quick

  311. and the dead

  312. whose kingdom

  313. shall have no end.

  314. When Paul speaks

  315. of Jesus

  316. as the firstborn

  317. of all creation,

  318. he's not saying

  319. that Jesus,

  320. the Son of God,

  321. was the first

  322. to be created

  323. of all creation.

  324. No,

  325. what Paul is doing

  326. is he's giving

  327. him a title.

  328. He is the firstborn

  329. of creation.

  330. If you would open up

  331. your Bible to Psalm 89,

  332. flip back to Psalm 89

  333. and we're going to look

  334. at verse 27.

  335. Paul is using this title,

  336. firstborn,

  337. in the same way

  338. that God uses it

  339. in Psalm 89, 27

  340. when he speaks

  341. of the Messiah.

  342. speaking of the Messiah,

  343. God says this,

  344. and I will make him

  345. the firstborn,

  346. the highest

  347. of the kings

  348. of the earth.

  349. When God says

  350. he's making the Messiah

  351. the firstborn,

  352. he's not talking

  353. about creating him,

  354. he's talking about

  355. installing him.

  356. in the office,

  357. with the title

  358. of firstborn.

  359. So Paul is using

  360. this title,

  361. firstborn,

  362. the same way

  363. that God uses it

  364. in Psalm 89, 27.

  365. So as the icon

  366. of the invisible God,

  367. he's not the first

  368. to be created,

  369. but rather is given

  370. the title,

  371. the firstborn

  372. of all creation.

  373. He's not a created being.

  374. He's the uncreated one

  375. who creates all.

  376. In verses 16 through 17,

  377. Paul shows us

  378. how the eternal son

  379. exercises his supremacy

  380. over all creation.

  381. You see that title,

  382. firstborn?

  383. It means to be supreme over.

  384. Supreme over all creation.

  385. And here's where I want

  386. to show you some prepositions.

  387. You ready?

  388. For by him

  389. all things

  390. were created.

  391. For by him

  392. all things

  393. were created.

  394. Now,

  395. you might see that word

  396. by

  397. and you start thinking,

  398. oh yeah,

  399. it's by Jesus,

  400. the agent

  401. of creation

  402. that all things

  403. were made.

  404. But,

  405. in all honesty,

  406. that word by

  407. is better translated

  408. in.

  409. Like,

  410. Jesus

  411. is the sphere

  412. in which

  413. all things

  414. were created.

  415. And what he's getting

  416. at is this.

  417. Jesus is the

  418. founder

  419. and author

  420. of all things

  421. that were created.

  422. He thought it all up.

  423. every created thing

  424. in heaven and earth.

  425. He thought it up.

  426. He thought up

  427. black holes.

  428. He thought up

  429. supernovas.

  430. He thought up

  431. cells

  432. and mitochondria.

  433. All created things

  434. seen and unseen

  435. come from him.

  436. He's the source

  437. of it all.

  438. All things

  439. were created

  440. in him.

  441. And it includes

  442. angelic beings.

  443. In verse 16,

  444. we read,

  445. he created,

  446. all things

  447. were created

  448. by him

  449. in heaven

  450. and earth,

  451. visible and invisible,

  452. whether thrones

  453. or dominions

  454. or rulers

  455. or authorities.

  456. Paul's talking

  457. right there

  458. about angels.

  459. Different kinds

  460. of angels.

  461. And you might

  462. be thinking,

  463. well,

  464. why is he talking

  465. about angels

  466. right there?

  467. Well,

  468. that's part

  469. of the false

  470. teaching that

  471. was happening

  472. to this church

  473. way back in the

  474. first century.

  475. There were false

  476. teachers teaching

  477. these people

  478. that not only

  479. do they need

  480. Jesus,

  481. they need angels

  482. as well

  483. to help them

  484. in their pursuit

  485. of God.

  486. And what

  487. Paul is saying

  488. is,

  489. no,

  490. Jesus is the

  491. creator of them

  492. all.

  493. All created

  494. things seen

  495. and unseen,

  496. including spiritual

  497. beings that

  498. have been created

  499. by God the

  500. Son.

  501. All things

  502. created in

  503. him.

  504. And then we

  505. read,

  506. all things were

  507. created through

  508. him.

  509. He is not

  510. only the source,

  511. but the means

  512. of creation.

  513. He did the

  514. creating.

  515. All things

  516. are created

  517. by him.

  518. Not only

  519. is he like the

  520. architect that

  521. thought up the

  522. plan,

  523. he's the

  524. contractor who

  525. put it into

  526. practice,

  527. put it into

  528. play.

  529. He did it.

  530. And not only

  531. were all things

  532. created through

  533. him,

  534. all things were

  535. created for

  536. him.

  537. You see that?

  538. all things

  539. were created

  540. through him

  541. and for

  542. him.

  543. Creation

  544. exists for

  545. the glory

  546. of his

  547. name.

  548. In him,

  549. by him,

  550. for him.

  551. Those are the

  552. prepositions I

  553. want you to

  554. see.

  555. And they all

  556. point to him

  557. being the

  558. Lord of all

  559. creation.

  560. But then Paul

  561. throws in a

  562. couple other

  563. things.

  564. Look at

  565. verse 17,

  566. and he is

  567. before all

  568. things.

  569. That word

  570. before can

  571. mean before

  572. like as in

  573. preeminent

  574. importance,

  575. or it can

  576. mean before

  577. just in terms

  578. of time.

  579. I came here

  580. before my

  581. wife came

  582. here.

  583. Every time

  584. that Paul

  585. uses that

  586. word before

  587. in the New

  588. Testament,

  589. it has a

  590. temporal sense,

  591. which means

  592. this.

  593. He's talking

  594. about time.

  595. So do you

  596. know what he's

  597. saying here?

  598. He's saying

  599. that Jesus

  600. is before all

  601. things.

  602. He's talking

  603. about the

  604. preexistence of

  605. the second

  606. person of the

  607. Trinity.

  608. that the

  609. second person

  610. of the

  611. Trinity has

  612. always existed.

  613. He is

  614. before all

  615. things.

  616. And not

  617. only is he

  618. before all

  619. things, he

  620. holds all

  621. things together.

  622. It's getting

  623. at the present

  624. role of the

  625. second person of

  626. the Trinity,

  627. Jesus, in

  628. holding the

  629. whole universe

  630. together.

  631. together.

  632. If you flip

  633. over to

  634. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  635. chapter 1,

  636. the author

  637. of Hebrews

  638. says this

  639. in a

  640. beautiful

  641. way.

  642. And

  643. long ago,

  644. at many times,

  645. and in many

  646. ways,

  647. chapter 1,

  648. verse 1,

  649. God spoke

  650. to our

  651. fathers by

  652. the prophets,

  653. but in

  654. these last

  655. days he

  656. has spoken

  657. to us

  658. by his

  659. son,

  660. whom he

  661. appointed the

  662. heir of all

  663. things,

  664. through whom

  665. also he

  666. created the

  667. world.

  668. Verse 3,

  669. he's the

  670. radiance of

  671. the glory of

  672. God and the

  673. exact imprint

  674. of his

  675. nature,

  676. and he

  677. upholds the

  678. universe by

  679. the word of

  680. his power.

  681. Do you want

  682. to think of

  683. something amazing?

  684. When Jesus

  685. was one

  686. year old

  687. as a boy,

  688. he, as

  689. the God in

  690. the flesh,

  691. was upholding

  692. the universe

  693. with the word

  694. of his power.

  695. Does that

  696. blow your

  697. mind?

  698. It blows

  699. my mind.

  700. He holds

  701. all things

  702. together,

  703. and he

  704. doesn't sweat

  705. about it.

  706. It's all

  707. powerful.

  708. What child

  709. is this?

  710. Who is this

  711. seven-pounder

  712. in the

  713. manger?

  714. He's the

  715. Lord of all

  716. creation.

  717. He created

  718. it all.

  719. In him,

  720. by him,

  721. for him.

  722. He's before

  723. all things,

  724. hold all

  725. things together.

  726. But,

  727. let me just

  728. ask this

  729. question aloud.

  730. What,

  731. why would

  732. he come?

  733. Why would

  734. he become

  735. a man?

  736. What's the

  737. deal?

  738. Why would

  739. the second

  740. person of

  741. the Trinity

  742. who created

  743. everything

  744. take on

  745. human flesh?

  746. Well,

  747. something went

  748. terribly wrong

  749. with his

  750. creation.

  751. When Adam

  752. and Eve

  753. sinned against

  754. God,

  755. there were

  756. cosmic

  757. repercussions

  758. of a

  759. comprehensive

  760. nature.

  761. Rupture.

  762. Rupture

  763. in

  764. relationship

  765. to God.

  766. Rupture

  767. in your

  768. relationship

  769. with yourself.

  770. Rupture

  771. in our

  772. relationships

  773. with others.

  774. Rupture

  775. in our

  776. relationship

  777. to creation.

  778. All that

  779. the second

  780. person of

  781. the Trinity

  782. had created

  783. in beauty

  784. and peace,

  785. sin

  786. distorted

  787. and made

  788. dangerous.

  789. So the

  790. second person

  791. of the

  792. Trinity

  793. became a

  794. man.

  795. He took

  796. on human

  797. flesh

  798. to reclaim

  799. that

  800. which is

  801. rightfully

  802. his

  803. because he

  804. created it

  805. all.

  806. even more

  807. amazing is

  808. how he

  809. claims it.

  810. His

  811. claiming of

  812. all creation

  813. is a

  814. work of

  815. reconciliation

  816. that is by

  817. the blood

  818. of his

  819. cross.

  820. So when we

  821. sing joy to

  822. the world,

  823. the Lord

  824. has come,

  825. our creator

  826. has come

  827. to redeem

  828. us as

  829. far as

  830. the curse

  831. is found.

  832. Whether

  833. that's

  834. God's

  835. hostility

  836. towards

  837. our

  838. sin,

  839. he came

  840. to make

  841. his blessings

  842. flow.

  843. In a

  844. relationship

  845. with others,

  846. he came

  847. to make

  848. his blessings

  849. flow as

  850. far as

  851. the curse

  852. is found.

  853. Distortions

  854. of cancer

  855. on the

  856. microcellular

  857. level,

  858. he came

  859. to reclaim

  860. it.

  861. The

  862. cosmic

  863. collisions

  864. of galaxies

  865. that you

  866. can witness

  867. through the

  868. Hubble

  869. space

  870. telescope,

  871. he came

  872. to make

  873. peace

  874. on a

  875. cosmic

  876. level.

  877. What

  878. child is

  879. this?

  880. He is the

  881. creator and

  882. sustainer of

  883. all things

  884. who came

  885. to reconcile,

  886. to make

  887. peace

  888. with the

  889. things that

  890. sin has

  891. ruptured.

  892. And so

  893. we've

  894. looked at

  895. he is

  896. the

  897. creator

  898. of all,

  899. verses

  900. 17 through

  901. 15 through

  902. 17.

  903. Now let's

  904. look at

  905. he is the

  906. reconciler of

  907. all,

  908. verses

  909. 18 through

  910. 20.

  911. Again,

  912. this time

  913. we have

  914. three titles

  915. in a bunch

  916. of prepositions.

  917. You ready?

  918. Title

  919. number

  920. one.

  921. And he

  922. is the

  923. head of

  924. the

  925. church,

  926. the body,

  927. the church.

  928. It's a

  929. title.

  930. When the

  931. Bible talks

  932. about the

  933. church,

  934. we're

  935. talking about

  936. God's

  937. people,

  938. God's

  939. new covenant

  940. people,

  941. the people

  942. that Jesus

  943. has individually

  944. bought with

  945. his blood.

  946. Those

  947. individual

  948. people comprise

  949. his body,

  950. the church.

  951. And so

  952. what we see

  953. happening in

  954. verse 18

  955. is Paul

  956. making a

  957. pivot.

  958. He is

  959. pivoting from

  960. creation of

  961. all things

  962. to the

  963. reconciliation

  964. of all

  965. things,

  966. the new

  967. creation of

  968. all things

  969. in Christ.

  970. He moves

  971. from being

  972. Christ,

  973. from showing

  974. us Christ

  975. as Lord

  976. of all

  977. in creation

  978. to now

  979. showing us

  980. Christ as

  981. the Lord

  982. of all

  983. redemption,

  984. the reconciler

  985. of all.

  986. So,

  987. I think

  988. here's

  989. what's

  990. going on.

  991. At the

  992. end of

  993. verse 17

  994. we see

  995. that the

  996. second person

  997. of the

  998. Trinity

  999. is holding

  1000. all things

  1001. together.

  1002. And then

  1003. Paul turns

  1004. in verse

  1005. 18 to

  1006. Jesus is

  1007. the head

  1008. in whom

  1009. the body

  1010. is held

  1011. together.

  1012. The body

  1013. of Christ,

  1014. the church,

  1015. is one of

  1016. Paul's favorite

  1017. ways to talk

  1018. about God's

  1019. people in the

  1020. New Testament.

  1021. individual,

  1022. interdependent

  1023. members.

  1024. What I love

  1025. about the

  1026. nine people

  1027. that became

  1028. members this

  1029. morning,

  1030. as elders

  1031. we sat

  1032. down and

  1033. we listened

  1034. to each

  1035. of their

  1036. testimonies

  1037. and we

  1038. got a sense

  1039. of their

  1040. burdens

  1041. and giftings

  1042. and it's

  1043. such a delight

  1044. to think

  1045. about how

  1046. God is

  1047. going to

  1048. use these

  1049. nine for

  1050. the building

  1051. up of

  1052. this local

  1053. body under

  1054. the head

  1055. of Jesus.

  1056. Jesus.

  1057. But here's

  1058. what you

  1059. need to

  1060. know about

  1061. these people

  1062. coming to

  1063. Jesus,

  1064. becoming a

  1065. Christian.

  1066. In 2 Corinthians

  1067. 5, Paul

  1068. talks about it

  1069. as a new

  1070. creation.

  1071. When somebody

  1072. puts their

  1073. trust in

  1074. Jesus, the

  1075. old has

  1076. gone and the

  1077. new has

  1078. come.

  1079. There are

  1080. new creations

  1081. in Jesus.

  1082. And so

  1083. his body

  1084. is a

  1085. group of

  1086. Christians,

  1087. new creations

  1088. in him

  1089. that he's

  1090. brought about.

  1091. And Jesus

  1092. is the

  1093. head.

  1094. And when

  1095. we talk

  1096. about the

  1097. head being

  1098. Jesus, we're

  1099. talking about

  1100. authority and

  1101. source of

  1102. life.

  1103. The body,

  1104. his body,

  1105. is under

  1106. and dependent

  1107. upon the

  1108. head of

  1109. Jesus.

  1110. And so

  1111. Paul has

  1112. pivoted from

  1113. talking about

  1114. Christ's

  1115. preexistent

  1116. work of

  1117. creation to

  1118. Christ's

  1119. incarnational

  1120. work of

  1121. making all

  1122. things new.

  1123. Salvation.

  1124. So that's

  1125. the first

  1126. title.

  1127. He's the

  1128. head of

  1129. the body.

  1130. Now the

  1131. second title

  1132. is in

  1133. verse 18.

  1134. He is

  1135. the beginning.

  1136. The

  1137. beginning of

  1138. what?

  1139. Now if

  1140. Paul had

  1141. placed this

  1142. title up in

  1143. verses 15

  1144. through 17,

  1145. we'd be

  1146. thinking, oh

  1147. yeah, he's

  1148. the beginning,

  1149. he's the

  1150. creator of

  1151. all, all

  1152. things were

  1153. made by

  1154. him, and

  1155. that would

  1156. be true

  1157. because it

  1158. is true.

  1159. But Paul

  1160. didn't place

  1161. that there.

  1162. Paul placed

  1163. this title,

  1164. he's the

  1165. beginning, after

  1166. he's the

  1167. head of the

  1168. church.

  1169. Paul doesn't

  1170. have the old

  1171. creation of

  1172. heaven or

  1173. earth in

  1174. mind.

  1175. He's got the

  1176. new creation

  1177. of all things

  1178. in heaven and

  1179. earth.

  1180. Christ is the

  1181. beginning of

  1182. the new

  1183. creation.

  1184. He is

  1185. salvation.

  1186. And the

  1187. next title

  1188. makes that

  1189. point even

  1190. further.

  1191. Look at

  1192. verse 18.

  1193. He is the

  1194. beginning, the

  1195. firstborn from

  1196. the dead.

  1197. Now we've

  1198. already encountered

  1199. that word

  1200. firstborn,

  1201. haven't we?

  1202. And verse 15,

  1203. he's the

  1204. firstborn of

  1205. all creation.

  1206. And what

  1207. Paul meant

  1208. by that

  1209. title is that

  1210. Christ is

  1211. supreme over

  1212. all creation.

  1213. All things

  1214. were created

  1215. in him, by

  1216. him, and

  1217. for him.

  1218. So what does

  1219. Paul mean

  1220. now?

  1221. Firstborn from

  1222. the dead?

  1223. Well, it's a

  1224. title.

  1225. And that

  1226. phrase, from

  1227. the dead, is

  1228. the reference

  1229. to which Christ

  1230. is supreme

  1231. over.

  1232. He reigns

  1233. over from

  1234. the dead,

  1235. whatever that

  1236. means.

  1237. You know

  1238. what that

  1239. means?

  1240. He's

  1241. referencing

  1242. resurrection.

  1243. being made

  1244. alive from

  1245. the dead.

  1246. Jesus is the

  1247. firstborn of

  1248. the resurrection

  1249. and understood

  1250. as a title.

  1251. He is

  1252. supreme over

  1253. all things

  1254. being made

  1255. new, being

  1256. brought to

  1257. life from

  1258. the dead.

  1259. Supreme over

  1260. the new

  1261. creation from

  1262. the deadly

  1263. effects of

  1264. sin.

  1265. Do you

  1266. remember in

  1267. John chapter

    John 11 chapter mention

  1268. 11, the

  1269. whole situation

  1270. with Lazarus?

  1271. Jesus shows

  1272. up late to

  1273. Bethany and

  1274. Martha has an

  1275. issue with

  1276. him.

  1277. He's like,

  1278. where were

  1279. you?

  1280. And he's

  1281. like, well,

  1282. I'm here.

  1283. And she's

  1284. like, well,

  1285. if you were

  1286. here, you

  1287. could have

  1288. kept him

  1289. from dying.

  1290. And Jesus

  1291. says, well,

  1292. he'll be

  1293. raised in the

  1294. last day.

  1295. And she

  1296. said, well,

  1297. you can pray

  1298. to God now

  1299. and he'll be

  1300. raised.

  1301. And Jesus

  1302. says to her,

  1303. I am the

  1304. resurrection and

  1305. the life.

  1306. I am the

  1307. firstborn from

  1308. the dead.

  1309. I reign over

  1310. it.

  1311. And do you

  1312. remember what

  1313. he did in

  1314. order to

  1315. demonstrate his

  1316. authority over

  1317. death?

  1318. Lazarus come

  1319. forth.

  1320. He came

  1321. forth.

  1322. And if that

  1323. weren't enough,

  1324. Jesus said,

  1325. not only would

  1326. he die, but

  1327. he would be

  1328. raised.

  1329. And he was

  1330. raised from

  1331. the dead.

  1332. In his own

  1333. resurrection,

  1334. resurrection,

  1335. just verifies

  1336. his title as

  1337. being supreme

  1338. over death.

  1339. The firstborn

  1340. from the dead.

  1341. In verse 18,

  1342. there's a word

  1343. that.

  1344. He's the

  1345. beginning, the

  1346. firstborn from

  1347. the dead, that

  1348. in everything he

  1349. might be

  1350. preeminent.

  1351. His own

  1352. resurrection from

  1353. the dead declares

  1354. him supreme over

  1355. the dead.

  1356. to show that

  1357. in every way,

  1358. whether in

  1359. creation or in

  1360. redemption, he

  1361. is Lord of all,

  1362. preeminent over

  1363. everything.

  1364. That's who this

  1365. baby is.

  1366. He's the Lord of

  1367. everything.

  1368. That he might be

  1369. preeminent,

  1370. matchless.

  1371. Remember that

  1372. Christ is supreme

  1373. over all creation

  1374. because all things

  1375. were created in

  1376. him, by him, and

  1377. for him.

  1378. Remember those

  1379. prepositions?

  1380. Those prepositions

  1381. show up again.

  1382. They show up in

  1383. Jesus' firstborn

  1384. from the deadness.

  1385. In him.

  1386. Look at verse 19.

  1387. For in him all

  1388. the fullness of

  1389. God was pleased to

  1390. dwell.

  1391. Paul is circling

  1392. back to Jesus'

  1393. relationship to

  1394. God.

  1395. He's the second

  1396. person of the

  1397. Trinity.

  1398. Fully God.

  1399. Fully man.

  1400. Again, chapter 2,

  1401. verse 9, we read

  1402. this.

  1403. For in him, Jesus,

  1404. the whole fullness

  1405. of deity dwells

  1406. bodily.

1407. So let me ask you

  1408. a question.

  1409. When did all the

  1410. fullness of God

  1411. come to dwell

  1412. bodily?

  1413. In Jesus.

  1414. Merry Christmas.

  1415. It's a reference

  1416. to the incarnation

  1417. of the second

  1418. person of the

  1419. Trinity.

  1420. But it's in the

  1421. context of

  1422. salvation.

  1423. Christmas is about

  1424. the incarnation of

  1425. Jesus.

  1426. And the incarnation

  1427. of Jesus is all

  1428. about our

  1429. reconciliation to

  1430. God.

  1431. Him making peace

  1432. by the blood of

  1433. his cross.

  1434. Christ is supreme

  1435. over salvation.

  1436. Because salvation

  1437. is in him.

  1438. He's the perfect

  1439. go-between.

  1440. God and man.

  1441. Because he's fully

  1442. God and fully

  1443. man.

  1444. That's why he came.

  1445. To make peace.

  1446. To reconcile all

  1447. of his creation.

1448. salvation is in no one

  1449. else.

  1450. That's why he came.

  1451. That's why he came.

  1452. That's why he came.

  1453. That's why he came.

  1454. That's why he came.

  1455. No other name under

  1456. heaven has been given

  1457. among men

  1458. by which we must

  1459. be saved.

  1460. There's only one.

  1461. There's only one.

1462. Salvation is in no one

  1463. else.

  1464. It's in him.

  1465. Because in him

1466. is the fullness of God

  1467. pleasing to dwell.

1468. So we've seen that this

  1469. reconciliation is in him

1470. and it's also through him.

  1471. When we talk about

  1472. reconciliation, we're

  1473. talking about the

  1474. reuniting of people.

  1475. We're talking about the

  1476. reuniting of two people

1477. or two people groups who

  1478. have experienced

  1479. disruption.

  1480. Do you remember the

  1481. island of misfit toys?

  1482. The exiled unwanted toys?

  1483. Reconciliation took place

  1484. when Rudolph reunited

  1485. these toys with the

1486. help of Santa to the

1487. boys and girls who would

  1488. love them forever.

  1489. Aw.

  1490. Here we're reading this.

1491. For in him all the

  1492. fullness of God was

  1493. pleased to dwell.

  1494. And that word pleased

  1495. carries into the next

  1496. verb.

1497. And was pleased to dwell

  1498. and pleased through him

  1499. to reconcile to himself

  1500. all things.

1501. Here Paul is saying that

  1502. it pleased God to

  1503. reconcile all things

  1504. through Jesus.

  1505. Jesus is the

  1506. source of reconciliation

  1507. reconciliation and he is

  1508. the means of

  1509. reconciliation.

  1510. He's the one that

  1511. brings peace between

  1512. sinners and a holy

  1513. God.

  1514. Now how did that

  1515. happen?

1516. If you look at the end

  1517. of verse 20, we're

1518. told making peace by the

  1519. blood of his cross.

  1520. The reconciliation God

1521. brought about came at an

  1522. extremely high price to

  1523. God incarnate.

1524. He shed his blood on a

1525. cross in order to make

  1526. peace between God and

  1527. sinners.

  1528. To bring shalom, peace

  1529. to his creation.

  1530. Specifically to men and

  1531. women, boys and girls.

  1532. It's through him.

  1533. And through him alone.

  1534. The separation and

  1535. hostility that exists between

1536. God and sinners can only

1537. be removed by the blood of

  1538. his cross.

  1539. It's the only way.

1540. The blood of his cross.

1541. Just to be crystal clear,

1542. the blood that Paul is

  1543. talking about is the

1544. blood of the baby boy that

1545. was born six miles outside

  1546. of Jerusalem 2,000 years

  1547. ago.

  1548. That's the blood.

  1549. blood.

1550. It's the blood of the

  1551. God man.

  1552. God incarnate shed his

  1553. blood on his cross.

1554. The cross is a reference

  1555. to his death.

  1556. That's where he died.

1557. He was crucified as a

  1558. common criminal in order

  1559. to reconcile common

1560. sinners like you and me to

  1561. an uncommon God.

  1562. It's all part of God's

  1563. loving plan from the

  1564. foundation of the world.

1565. not only would the second

  1566. person of the Trinity

1567. become a man, but the

  1568. second person of the

  1569. Trinity, after becoming a

1570. man, would brutally die on

  1571. a Roman cross.

1572. And he did it voluntarily.

1573. He did it for you and for

  1574. me.

1575. He died in our place.

1576. It was my sin that

  1577. disrupted my relationship

  1578. with God.

  1579. It's your sin that

  1580. ruptured your relationship

  1581. with God.

1582. And because of that, God

1583. justly condemns you and me

1584. because of our sin to an

  1585. eternal death.

1586. But Jesus, born in a stable,

1587. so that through his death on

1588. the cross, he could reconcile

1589. you and me to God.

1590. He made peace by the blood of

  1591. his cross.

1592. God's wrath poured out on

1593. Jesus so that we can

  1594. experience peace.

1595. No more hostility between God

  1596. and sinners, those who

  1597. believe.

  1598. He's the perfect mediator.

1599. Only his death could pay for

1600. all your sin and everyone

1601. else who would one day

  1602. believe in him.

1603. And that's all you need to

  1604. do to respond.

1605. Jesus became a man and

1606. died on a cross in order to

  1607. bring everlasting peace to

  1608. those who believe.

1609. And that's how you respond.

  1610. You can't earn it.

  1611. You receive it.

1612. You receive it as a gift.

1613. The birth of Jesus was the

  1614. first Christmas.

  1615. But the greatest Christmas

1616. gift that God is offering

1617. today is the salvation that

1618. Jesus has made available through

1619. the blood of his cross.

1620. He makes it available to

  1621. everyone.

1622. Our reconciliation is in him and

1623. through him and it is to him.

1624. We read that in verse 19.

1625. For in him all the fullness,

1626. excuse me, 20, in him all the

1627. fullness of God who is pleased

1628. to dwell and through him to

  1629. reconcile to himself all

  1630. things.

1631. The himself is most likely a

1632. reference to God the Father

  1633. because whenever the New

  1634. Testament talks about

  1635. reconciliation, we're being

  1636. reconciled to the Father.

1637. But here's what I want you to

  1638. notice.

  1639. It's the scope.

1640. It's the scope of his

  1641. reconciling work.

1642. Verse 20, and through him to

  1643. reconcile to himself all

  1644. things.

  1645. All things.

1646. Christ's death is his reclaiming

1647. of all that he created that was

1648. brutalized by the effects of sin.

1649. At the cross, Jesus is saying,

  1650. it's all mine.

  1651. I'm reclaiming it.

  1652. It's all mine.

1653. It's the decisive turning point

1654. in history in which Jesus comes

1655. and reclaims his own and not

1656. just sinners, but all of

  1657. creation.

1658. So the salvation that Jesus

1659. accomplished through his death on

1660. the cross has a cosmic reach

1661. for as the curse is found.

1662. So he will eventually recreate the

1663. heavens and the earth with the

1664. result of a full and lasting peace.

1665. No more hostility for as the curse is

  1666. found.

  1667. Joy to the word.

1668. So this work of peace which began at

1669. the incarnation and was accomplished at

1670. the cross, it will culminate when Jesus

1671. comes back the second time.

  1672. His second advent.

1673. When he returns and makes all things right.

1674. When he comes to judge the world.

  1675. Every knee will bow.

1676. Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

1677. He comes back as the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

1678. You see, when he comes back, he will bring peace.

1679. He will pacify all who oppose him.

1680. When he returns in righteous authority and judgment,

1681. all who were unwilling to bow to him on earth

1682. will bow to him then.

1683. He will establish a comprehensive and lasting peace

  1684. for the entire cosmos.

1685. This morning we've seen that Christ is the creator of all

1686. and the reconciler of all.

1687. In short, you could say he's Lord of all.

  1688. What child is this?

1689. What child is this in the manger and the stable?

  1690. He's the creator.

  1691. He's the peacemaker.

1692. So this Christmas, worship him for who he is

1693. in all of his fullness.

1694. Your creator came as a man to make peace with you

1695. by the blood of his cross.

  1696. And you know what?

1697. That's worth telling others about.

1698. Go tell it on the mountain.

  1699. Let's pray.

1700. God, thank you so much for Colossians 1, 15 through 20.

1701. God, thank you that your word gives us

1702. a high and glorious view of our Savior and Lord.

1703. God, would you press into our hearts

1704. a worshipful delight in Christ,

  1705. our creator and reconciler.

1706. And it's in his name we pray.

  1707. Amen.

  1708. Amen.

  1709. Amen.

  1710. Amen.

  1711. Amen.

  1712. Amen.

  1713. Amen.

  1714. Amen.

  1715. Amen.

  1716. Amen.

  1717. Amen.

  1718. Amen.

  1719. Amen.

  1720. Amen.

  1721. Amen.

  1722. Amen.

  1723. Amen.

  1724. Amen.

  1725. Amen.

  1726. Amen.

  1727. Amen.

  1728. Amen.

  1729. Amen.

  1730. Amen.

  1731. Amen.
