  1. A funny thing happened a couple weeks ago. It was our last big snow.

  2. And I have a pickup truck, which I love driving around in. I just drive around in it.

  3. But I also have a snowblower. And when I can make those two come together,

  4. put the snowblower in the back of the pickup truck, I love it.

  5. So I cleared my snow around my house, loaded up the snowblower in the back of my pickup truck,

  6. closed the back gate, and I was going to come over here to the church just to make sure that

  7. if I could help out anyway, and it had already been cleared.

  8. But I'm pulling out. I've got my truck in four-wheel drive. I punch it a little bit.

  9. And I look up in the rearview mirror, and do you know what I see?

  10. I see my snowblower rolling off the back of my pickup truck.

  11. Apparently, the gate hadn't closed sufficiently because of snow.

  12. And so I watched the snowblower roll off and then do about a three-foot bounce and fall back down.

  13. I stopped. I rushed out. I ran up to my snowblower, which was on its side, looking dead.

  14. What am I going to do?

  15. I reached down, pumped the primer.

  16. Are you going to be okay? Pull that cord.

  17. That thing was ready to roar.

  18. It needs a lot of work done to it.

  19. But the engine was working great.

  20. This morning, I don't want to punch the engine and drop you off the back of the gate.

  21. I want to prime your pump.

  22. I want your heart to be primed to receive the parables of Matthew 13.

  23. And so this morning, we're going to take some time to take a look at these eight parables together.

  24. Parables about the kingdom of heaven.

  25. And if I can remind you what the kingdom of heaven is, the kingdom of heaven is a way of talking about the saving reign of God.

  26. God being present and rescuing sinners to himself.

  27. And the saving reign of God was inaugurated at the first coming of Jesus.

  28. And it will culminate in the second coming of Jesus.

  29. But this morning, I'm going to look at these eight parables in Matthew 13.

  30. And we're going to see each one reveals some aspect of the kingdom of heaven.

  31. Something about the saving reign of God.

  32. And in order for you to fully appreciate each parable, you need to see how they're all functioning together as a whole.

  33. Matthew 13, 1-53 is one extended teaching of Jesus.

  34. It's all to be taken together.

  35. And so what makes this teaching unique is that Jesus teaches in parables.

  36. That's why it's commonly known as the parabolic discourse.

  37. And personally, I just like saying parabolic.

  38. I love the way that comes off my tongue.

  39. Parabolic.

  40. This parabolic discourse is one of five extended teachings throughout the Gospel of Matthew

  41. that culminate in the climax of Matthew.

  42. And that is the death and resurrection of Jesus.

  43. But this morning, I want to prime your heart for these parables of the kingdom.

  44. And so this morning, five primers.

  45. You ready?

  46. Number one, a parable is a kind of tool.

  47. Primer number two, parables have a dual purpose.

  48. Primer number three, the parables have an interwoven theme.

  49. That makes it a beautiful tapestry.

  50. Primer number four, and this is the one that I think you're going to be amazed by.

  51. There is a very carefully constructed design here.

  52. These parables are working together.

  53. And primer number five, these parables point to a common focal point.

  54. And his name is Jesus.

  55. So primer number one, a parable is a kind of tool.

  56. What's your favorite tool that you have?

  57. Is it your phone?

  58. Is it Google?

  59. The remote control to your TV?

  60. I was given a cordless drill by my mother-in-law about 10, 15 years ago.

  61. And I love that thing.

  62. That thing gets a lot done.

  63. I've got an axe.

  64. I love my axe.

  65. I would carry it around my back if I could.

  66. But I think it would raise too many questions.

  67. And so I don't.

  68. A buddy of mine let me use his chainsaw.

  69. It's called a Husqvarna chainsaw.

  70. It is awesome.

  71. I would use it.

  72. It would blow all this kind of wood chips all over the place.

  73. I would smell like chainsaw exhaust and sweat.

  74. And all that, all coming together, wood chips, exhaust, sweat.

  75. Oh, man, it smelled so good.

  76. But I have actually coined the fragrance.

  77. It's a cologne.

  78. It's called Weekend Warrior.

  79. What's your favorite tool?

  80. Jesus was a carpenter.

  81. I'm sure he had a favorite tool.

  82. But when it comes to teaching, one of Jesus' favorite tools was the parable.

  83. A parable is simply a way to communicate truth.

  84. It's a teaching tool.

  85. And another thing you need to know about a parable, not only is it a teaching tool,

  86. it's a teaching tool that communicates truth through comparison.

  87. It's a very effective way to communicate spiritual truth,

  88. and it does so through a comparison to everyday activity.

  89. And so if you took a look at the eight parables in Matthew 13,

  90. the parable of the sower,

  91. you see this very visible presentation Jesus puts in your mind.

  92. He paints a picture in your mind to make a point.

  93. And so the parable of the sower is chapter 13, 3 through 9,

    Isaiah 13 chapter mention

  94. and we see this sower throwing seed,

  95. and it's being received by four different kinds of soils.

  96. It's like you're there.

  97. You can imagine it.

  98. Very vivid.

  99. It's a comparison.

  100. The parable of the weeds in chapter 13, 24 through 30,

  101. that's the second parable.

  102. Weeds and wheat growing up together.

  103. It's like you're there.

  104. The parable of the mustard seed in chapter 13, 31 through 32.

  105. The parable of the leaven in 13, 33.

  106. It's like when I hear Jesus saying that,

  107. I imagine a lady just kneading dough

  108. and kneading leaven through a lump of dough.

  109. Very visible.

  110. But they're there to make a comparison.

  111. You go on to the hidden treasure in the pearl of great price.

  112. The hidden treasure in 1344.

  113. Can you not imagine a guy digging in the middle of a field?

  114. I'm like there.

  115. The parable of the net.

  116. Fishermen getting this huge catch of mixed fish together.

  117. That's 1347 through 58.

  118. And the last parable, of course,

  119. is the parable of the master of the house.

  120. That's in 1352 where this guy comes out

  121. and out of his treasure shares new and old things.

  122. Each is very vivid.

  123. And each is making a comparison.

  124. So what a parable does is

  125. it teaches truth through a comparison.

  126. Jesus is going to point us to an everyday experience

  127. we all deal with

  128. and make a spiritual connection to it.

  129. Jesus is absolutely brilliant.

  130. Now, a parable is a teaching tool

  131. that makes a comparison in order to communicate truth,

  132. but it also provokes a response.

  133. You just can't read it and kind of like,

  134. well, I'm going to move on.

  135. It provokes a response.

  136. And it's not just these parables in Matthew 13,

  137. but in Matthew 18,

  138. there's the parable of the unforgiving servant.

  139. It's an extended parable.

  140. And you can't help,

  141. but when you get done reading,

  142. you're like,

  143. am I forgiving everybody

  144. the way I'm supposed to be forgiving everybody?

  145. It provokes a response.

  146. Or the parable of the talents

  147. in Matthew 25.

  148. Am I faithfully stewarding

  149. what God has entrusted to me?

  150. And am I doing that in a way

  151. that when He comes back,

  152. He will be pleased?

  153. You see, parables are very vivid,

  154. but they're designed to provoke

  155. a response from us.

  156. And so when you read the parable of the sowers

  157. and you learn about all these kind of different soils,

  158. you find yourself asking the question,

  159. well, what kind of soil is my heart?

  160. That's the right response.

  161. If you read the parable of the hidden treasure

  162. and you see this guy

  163. who stumbles across this treasure hidden in a field

  164. and you see his response

  165. that in joy,

  166. he sells everything that he has to buy it.

  167. You find yourself asking the question,

  168. am I responding that way to the kingdom of heaven?

  169. Do I have that kind of joy?

  170. Very effective teaching tool.

  171. And so a parable is a kind of teaching tool

  172. that compares everyday events

  173. to make a spiritual connection

  174. to a spiritual truth

  175. and it's designed to elicit a response.

  176. And Jesus used parables

  177. like no other before or after.

  178. You can even say that Jesus

  179. was the prince of parables.

  180. He's that good.

  181. So primer number one,

  182. parables are a kind of a tool.

  183. Primer number two,

  184. a parable has a dual purpose.

  185. Think vertical blinds.

  186. I'll come back to it.

  187. Remember, Matthew 13 is coming after

  188. a couple chapters

  189. dealing with people's responses to Jesus.

  190. Remember in John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  191. John the Baptist sends his disciples to Jesus

  192. and basically asks him,

  193. hey, are you the one?

  194. Are you the Christ?

  195. And Jesus responds to John's disciples.

  196. He says, well, let's see here.

  197. The deaf hear.

  198. The blind receive their sight.

  199. The dead are raised.

  200. The poor have the gospel preached to them.

  201. You go tell John that I'm the one.

  202. But John the Baptist was somewhat undecided.

  203. And then what we see throughout the gospels too

  204. are those who are decidedly followers of Jesus.

  205. His disciples.

  206. But we also see people who are decidedly against Jesus.

  207. They have rejected Jesus as the Christ,

  208. the son of man, the son of David.

  209. In chapter 12, we see the conflicts

  210. between Jesus and the Pharisees,

  211. the religious establishment of the day.

  212. There were some significant tensions rising.

  213. And for the rest of the gospel of Matthew,

  214. all the way up to chapter 26 and 27,

  215. there is going to be this rising tension

  216. between Jesus and the religious establishment.

  217. We're kind of left asking this question though

  218. as we're reading through the gospel of Matthew.

  219. Why doesn't everybody see Jesus for who he really is?

  220. For us, it's kind of clear.

  221. We see Jesus to be the Messiah.

  222. The one long anticipated.

  223. The King of Kings.

  224. The Lord of Lords who has come.

  225. Why isn't everybody seeing Jesus that way?

  226. Why are some people rejecting Jesus as the Messiah?

  227. We see that happening in Kenosha.

  228. Not everybody sees Jesus for who he claimed to be.

  229. What's up with that?

  230. Well, Matthew is helping us come to grips

  231. even here in Matthew 13.

  232. He's helping us come to grips

  233. with the fact that not everybody

  234. is going to become a Christian.

  235. They're not going to receive Jesus

  236. as God's promised Messiah.

  237. Not everyone in this city

  238. is going to joyfully bow their knee

  239. to Jesus as their Savior and King.

  240. Why not?

  241. Well, Jesus helps us understand that

  242. in Matthew 13.

  243. Right after he speaks the parable of the sower,

  244. his disciples in chapter 13, verse 10,

  245. if you want to look there with me,

  246. his disciples notice something.

  247. They notice that Jesus is speaking

  248. only in parables to the crowds.

  249. It's a change of his method.

  250. Why do you speak to them in parables?

  251. This was new to them.

  252. And so they're like,

  253. what's going on here?

  254. Why are you just speaking to the crowds in parables?

  255. And then in verse 12,

  256. Jesus answers them.

  257. He says,

  258. To you it has been given

  259. to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven,

  260. but to them it has not been given.

  261. For to the one who has,

  262. more will be given,

  263. and he will have an abundance.

  264. But from the one who has not,

  265. even what he has will be taken away.

  266. This is why I speak to them in parables,

  267. because seeing they do not see,

  268. and hearing they do not hear,

  269. nor do they understand.

  270. Indeed, in their case,

  271. the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled

  272. that says,

  273. you will indeed hear,

  274. but never understand,

  275. and you will indeed see,

  276. but never perceive.

  277. Jesus is explaining to them

  278. why not everybody is bowing their knee to him

  279. as the king.

  280. Jesus is saying something

  281. very significant here.

  282. The parables serve a purpose,

  283. but it reveals something

  284. about those who hear the parables.

  285. Would you just turn back

  286. in your Bible to Matthew 11,

    Matthew 11:25

  287. verse 25?

  288. In verses 20 through 24,

  289. Jesus has just pronounced woe

  290. to Chorazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum,

  291. these cities in the greater Galilee

  292. and Metroplex

  293. that Jesus has been doing

  294. all sorts of kind of miraculous works,

  295. and what Jesus says,

  296. woe to you,

  297. because you've seen the works,

  298. but you've not believed,

  299. you've not repented.

  300. And so they essentially rejected him

  301. for being the king.

  302. And so what we see in verses 25

  303. through 27

  304. is a little bit of an explanation.

  305. At that time,

  306. Jesus declared,

  307. I thank you, Father,

  308. Lord of heaven and earth,

  309. that you have hidden

  310. these things

  311. from the wise and understanding

  312. and revealed them

  313. to little children.

  314. Yes, Father,

  315. for such was your

  316. gracious will.

  317. All things have been handed over

  318. to me by my Father,

  319. and no one knows the Son

  320. except the Father,

  321. and no one knows the Father

  322. except the Son,

  323. and anyone to whom the Son

  324. chooses to reveal Him.

  325. We're starting to get the sense

  326. of the purpose of parables.

  327. The purpose of parables

  328. are twofold.

  329. They hide

  330. and they reveal.

  331. And so what Jesus is saying here is

  332. those who have eyes

  333. to see the parables

  334. and what they mean,

  335. that's been revealed

  336. to them by God.

  337. That's God's grace.

  338. It's God's grace

  339. that you can see

  340. the meaning of a parable.

  341. It's His kindness to you.

  342. But what we also see here

  343. is that God holds us,

  344. everyone accountable

  345. for their hearts.

  346. Jesus is very clear

  347. that saying He chooses

  348. whom He will reveal

  349. God's saving reign to.

  350. And what that goes to

  351. is it goes to the depth

  352. of our spiritual depravity.

  353. We are unable to see God

  354. unless God by His grace

  355. reveals Himself to us.

  356. That's the extent

  357. of our sinfulness.

  358. So Jesus speaks in parables

  359. to the crowds

  360. as a way of hiding

  361. the kingdom from the proud

  362. and revealing the kingdom

  363. to the humble.

  364. It's a dual purpose.

  365. You know what vertical blinds are?

  366. Come with me.

  367. Let's say that this window right here

  368. has a set of vertical blinds.

  369. You know, long,

  370. about three inches wide.

  371. If I had a cord right here,

  372. I could make the vertical blinds

  373. dance back and forth.

  374. You know what I'm talking about?

  375. Well, let's say

  376. that we have a vertical blind

  377. right here

  378. and I pull the cord

  379. and I set it

  380. at about 45 degrees.

  381. So if I'm standing here,

  382. what am I looking at?

  383. I'm looking at the broad side

  384. of the shade.

  385. Will I be able

  386. to see through the window?

  387. I won't be.

  388. It's, the window's been

  389. hidden to me.

  390. But for those of you

  391. who are sitting over there,

  392. if the blind was set

  393. at 45 degrees,

  394. would you be able

  395. to see out the window?

  396. You would be able

  397. to see out the window.

  398. And so a parable functions

  399. like a vertical blind.

  400. For those who have hearts

  401. that are hard towards Jesus,

  402. the parable will keep them

  403. from seeing the truth

  404. of the kingdom

  405. that the parable teaches.

  406. But for those people

  407. who have tender hearts

  408. towards Jesus,

  409. humble hearts

  410. towards Jesus,

  411. the parable is open to them

  412. so that they can see

  413. the truth of the kingdom

  414. that it conveys.

  415. A parable has a two,

  416. has a double purpose.

  417. To hide the truth

  418. of the kingdom

  419. from those who have hard hearts

  420. Jesus is not going

  421. to throw his pearl

  422. unto swine.

  423. But he is also,

  424. it serves to help

  425. those with tender hearts

  426. to see the truth

  427. of the kingdom

  428. that Jesus intends.

  429. How do you respond

  430. to something like that?

  431. Well, for those of us

  432. who have been given eyes

  433. to see and ears

  434. to hear Jesus

  435. and what he means,

  436. look at chapter 13,

  437. verse 16.

  438. He says to his disciples,

  439. but blessed are your eyes

  440. for they see

  441. and your ears

  442. for they hear.

  443. Blessed are you,

  444. brother and sister in Christ,

  445. for God in his grace

  446. has given you eyes

  447. to see and ears to hear.

  448. And it also gives us

  449. something to remember

  450. because when we're talking

  451. to others about Jesus,

  452. our confidence

  453. is not in our ability

  454. to make a compelling case

  455. about Jesus,

  456. but our confidence

  457. is in God's grace

  458. to give people eyes

  459. to see and ears to hear

  460. so that they would

  461. eventually understand

  462. who Jesus is

  463. and what he's done.

  464. So this is primer two.

  465. The parables have a dual purpose.

  466. You've got to be thinking

  467. vertical blinds.

  468. Primer three.

  469. The parables share

  470. common interwoven themes.

  471. I'm a fan of the antique roadshow.

  472. I could binge for far too long

  473. on antique roadshows.

  474. But there was this one

  475. antique roadshow

  476. where someone brought in

  477. this ancient Native American tapestry.

  478. And they had it up

  479. somehow hanging on this

  480. kind of nice woodwork.

  481. And it was,

  482. the wovenness to it,

  483. the design was so intricate

  484. and lovely.

  485. These parables

  486. have interwoven themes to them.

  487. And let me just identify

  488. some of them for you.

  489. There's a theme of

  490. the proclamation of the kingdom.

  491. We see that in the parable

  492. of the sower.

  493. The sower throws the seed.

  494. And at the very last parable,

  495. the parable of the master

  496. of the house

  497. who brings out of his treasure

  498. both new and old.

  499. That's a reference to

  500. Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament.

  501. It is making God's word known.

  502. Proclamation of the kingdom.

  503. Another interwoven theme

  504. is the different responses

  505. to the message of the kingdom.

  506. The parable of the sower,

  507. you have four different responses.

  508. You have wheat

  509. and you have weeds.

  510. You have different kinds of fish

  511. that are all caught together

  512. in one big net.

  513. Then they're sorted out

  514. good and bad.

  515. You have the hiddenness

  516. of the kingdom.

  517. The parable of the mustard seed.

  518. It is so small

  519. you can barely see it.

  520. Leaven goes unseen.

  521. The hidden treasure,

  522. the pearl of great price

  523. is rare.

  524. You just don't see those around.

  525. There's the interwoven theme

  526. of hiddenness of the kingdom,

  527. but it doesn't stay hidden.

  528. It grows.

  529. And so the theme

  530. of the parable of the mustard seed

  531. and the parable of the leaven

  532. is that it starts small

  533. and unseen

  534. and surprise,

  535. it grows into something impressive.

  536. There's another theme

  537. of that those of the kingdom of God

  538. are in close proximity

  539. to those who are

  540. in the kingdom of Satan

  541. in this world.

  542. We see it in the wheat

  543. and the tares

  544. growing up together,

  545. separated at harvest.

  546. We see it in the parable

  547. of the net

  548. when all these fish

  549. are caught together

  550. at the same time

  551. then are eventually separated.

  552. There's also the interwoven theme

  553. of final judgment.

  554. The parable of the weeds

  555. ends in judgment.

  556. The parable of the net

  557. ends in sorting.

  558. A reference to judgment.

  559. And then there's the theme

  560. of the incredible value

  561. of the kingdom.

  562. Of course, the hidden treasure

  563. should come to your mind.

  564. The pearl of great price.

  565. But even in the parable

  566. of the sower,

  567. the good soil yields

  568. a wonderful yield.

  569. A valuable yield.

  570. All these themes

  571. are woven together

  572. in this rich tapestry

  573. of parables

  574. that make up 13.

  575. It's all connected.

  576. It's a detailed tapestry

  577. of themes related

  578. to the kingdom of heaven.

  579. The saving reign of God.

  580. That's primer three.

  581. Primer four.

  582. These parables share

  583. a common,

  584. carefully crafted design.

  585. Now, notice,

  586. I'm not sure if you're aware

  587. of this,

  588. but the first four parables,

  589. Jesus speaks

  590. to the crowds

  591. on a beach.

  592. Would you look at

  593. verses one and two?

  594. That same day,

  595. Jesus went out

  596. of the house

  597. and sat beside the sea

  598. and great crowds

  599. gathered about him

  600. so that he got into a boat

  601. and sat down

  602. and the whole crowd

  603. stood on the beach.

  604. So the first four parables

  605. is Jesus preaching

  606. to crowds,

  607. those who aren't following him yet,

  608. on a beach.

  609. That's the first four.

  610. And then the last four,

  611. Jesus moves from the beach

  612. to a house

  613. and moves from talking

  614. to a crowd

  615. to talking to his disciples.

  616. And you see that

  617. in verse 36.

  618. Then he left the crowds

  619. and went into the house

  620. and his disciples

  621. came to him saying,

  622. explain to us

  623. the parable of the weeds.

  624. And from there,

  625. he goes on to share

  626. four more parables.

  627. So, do you know

  628. what just happened?

  629. There's a very subtle division

  630. in Matthew chapter 13

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  631. that divides

  632. these eight parables

  633. into two groups of four.

  634. It's kind of like a butterfly.

  635. You know,

  636. have you ever seen

  637. a butterfly flutter?

  638. We're going to be seeing him

  639. in a little bit.

  640. I can't wait.

  641. But when a butterfly flies,

  642. you see the symmetrical wings, right?

  643. Matthew is setting up

  644. a symmetry

  645. that we're going to,

  646. he's going to help us

  647. to see in a little bit.

  648. But a butterfly's wings

  649. support its body.

  650. That's where all the action

  651. is going on.

  652. There's another aspect

  653. of design here

  654. that you may not have noticed.

  655. The first parable,

  656. the parable of the sower,

  657. and the last parable,

  658. the parable of the master

  659. of the house,

  660. they have introductions

  661. to the parables

  662. that are different

  663. than the middle six.

  664. The middle six parables

  665. all start with something like

  666. the kingdom of heaven

  667. may be compared to,

  668. the kingdom of heaven

  669. is like,

  670. the kingdom of heaven,

  671. the kingdom of heaven,

  672. the kingdom of heaven,

  673. the kingdom of heaven.

  674. But the first parable

  675. and the last parable

  676. don't start that way.

  677. But they're about

  678. the kingdom of heaven.

  679. So what Matthew does

  680. by doing that

  681. is helps you to say

  682. this parable is this beginning,

  683. this parable is the end,

  684. all these parables

  685. are to be taken together

  686. even though

  687. four is on one side

  688. and four is on the other.

  689. Do you,

  690. you're starting to see

  691. that Matthew's actually

  692. crafted this chapter

  693. very carefully?

  694. Now,

  695. there's still another design

  696. to this passage.

  697. And I'm guessing

  698. that when you walked

  699. into this room

  700. this morning

  701. and if you've read

  702. Matthew chapter 13 before,

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  703. I'm guessing you weren't aware

  704. of what is going on

  705. below the surface.

  706. this.

  707. And I want to show it to you

  708. because it's striking

  709. when you see it

  710. because it is so elaborate.

  711. It's called a chiasm.

  712. And it's carefully crafted chiasm.

  713. Now, you might say,

  714. chiasm, what is that?

  715. It sounds like some condition.

  716. Chiasm is taken,

  717. is from a Greek letter

  718. X,

  719. chi.

  720. And what you need to note

  721. about the letter chi

  722. is its form.

  723. It has two strokes

  724. and there is an intersection

  725. in the middle.

  726. Do you see it?

  727. Why don't you hold up

  728. your hands right now

  729. and go like this,

  730. make an X with your fingers

  731. and say,

  732. chiasm.

  733. And just say parabolic

  734. because it's so fun to say.

  735. So, in Matthew 13,

  736. 1 through 53,

  737. there is a chiasm

  738. and it's easier

  739. to show you it

  740. than to try to explain it.

  741. So, I've asked Andy

  742. to put it up on the screen.

  743. You guys ready?

  744. Follow with me.

  745. I think you'll be encouraged.

  746. This chiasm begins

  747. with Jesus' arrival

  748. in Matthew 13,

  749. 1 through 2.

  750. Why don't you throw it up there?

  751. Is it up there?

  752. Sorry about the size.

  753. It's the only way

  754. to squish it all

  755. on one screen.

  756. One screen.

  757. Jesus arrives.

  758. He shows up.

  759. And the next part,

  760. progression of this chiasm

  761. is the parable of the sower.

  762. So, that's number two.

  763. And the parable of the sower

  764. is about the word

  765. of the kingdom

  766. being received.

  767. Remember the four

  768. different soils.

  769. The next progression

  770. of the chiasm

  771. is in chapter 13,

  772. verses 10 through 17.

  773. There's a Q&A.

  774. The disciples ask Jesus

  775. about parables.

  776. Why are you speaking

  777. in parables?

  778. And then Jesus explains them

  779. by pointing to Isaiah 6.

  780. The chiasm progresses

  781. even more

  782. in chapter 13,

  783. 18 through 23.

  784. The explanation

  785. of the parable

  786. of the sower.

  787. Jesus explains

  788. what the soils represent.

  789. That's number four.

  790. And then the fifth point

  791. on the progression

  792. is the parable

  793. of the weeds.

  794. And that's chapter 13

  795. through 24 through 30.

  796. People are the wheat

  797. in the weeds.

  798. Judgment is the harvest.

  799. And then He moves

  800. into a pair

  801. of parables.

  802. They're like kissing cousins.

  803. This pair

  804. kind of runs together.

  805. The first parable

  806. is the parable

  807. of the mustard seed.

  808. It's a shorter parable

  809. and it's about

  810. the kingdom of God

  811. growing.

  812. That's 31 and 32.

  813. But its kissing cousin

  814. is chapter 13,

  815. verse 33.

  816. The parable

  817. of the leaven.

  818. And that too

  819. is about the kingdom

  820. of heaven spreading.

  821. And so they're different

  822. but they're to go together.

  823. And that brings us

  824. to the intersection

  825. of the chiasm.

  826. The very point.

  827. And the point of it,

  828. I'll come back to it

  829. in a little bit,

  830. but it's Jesus

  831. is the fulfiller.

  832. And that we see that

  833. in chapter 13,

  834. 34 through 43.

  835. So that's the intersection.

  836. But now we're going

  837. to reverse our direction.

  838. Okay?

  839. And here's where

  840. I want you to see

  841. the balance

  842. because it's beautiful.

  843. So from Jesus

  844. the fulfiller,

  845. there's the parable

  846. of the hidden treasure.

  847. Which is a one verse parable

  848. kind of like

  849. the parable of the leaven.

  850. And then with it

  851. comes the parable

  852. of the great

  853. pearl of great value.

  854. And the parable

  855. of the hidden treasure

  856. and the parable

  857. of the pearl

  858. of great value,

  859. they're kissing cousins too.

  860. They're supposed

  861. to go together.

  862. And so,

  863. do you start seeing

  864. the balance

  865. that's forming here?

  866. Well, let's go on.

  867. After the parable

  868. of the pearl

  869. of great value,

  870. there's the parable

  871. of the net.

  872. People are compared

  873. to fish.

  874. The judgment

  875. is the sorting

  876. that goes on.

  877. And it parallels

  878. the parable

  879. of the weeds.

  880. And then Jesus

  881. explains the parable

  882. of the net.

  883. Just like Jesus

  884. explained the parable

  885. of the sower.

  886. And then

  887. in number three

  888. coming back,

  889. there's this Q&A

  890. in verse 51.

  891. Instead of the disciples

  892. asking Jesus

  893. a question about parables,

  894. it's Jesus asking

  895. his disciples

  896. about parables.

  897. Do you understand

  898. what I'm saying?

  899. And they say,

  900. yes!

  901. And from there,

  902. Jesus gives

  903. the parable

  904. of the master

  905. of the house

  906. in verse 52.

  907. And where the parable

  908. of the sower

  909. was about the word

  910. being received,

  911. the parable

  912. of the master

  913. of the house

  914. is about the word

  915. going out.

  916. He brought out

  917. from his treasure

  918. things new and old.

  919. And then,

  920. Jesus departs.

  921. 1353.

  922. It is balancing

  923. Jesus' arrival

  924. and 131.

  925. Do you see

  926. the chiasm?

  927. Do you see

  928. the X?

  929. Do you see

  930. the point?

  931. Now,

  932. there is beauty

  933. to this.

  934. Now,

  935. if you came

  936. into this building

  937. this morning

  938. and you're like,

  939. man,

  940. I hope I see

  941. a chiasm

  942. in Matthew 13

  943. this morning,

  944. I would really

  945. be surprised

  946. by that.

  947. But you're going

  948. to leave this building

  949. and you might find,

  950. did you know

  951. that there was

  952. a chiasm

  953. in Matthew 13?

  954. And it's beautiful.

  955. What it gets at

  956. is Matthew,

  957. this former tax collector,

  958. he was very careful

  959. about crafting

  960. a structure here

  961. that makes a point.

  962. Now,

  963. if you're like me

  964. who love words

  965. and love how words

  966. kind of relate

  967. to each other,

  968. you can just

  969. kind of get stuck

  970. on the structure

  971. of the literature.

  972. But we're not

  973. to stay there.

  974. We're not

  975. just to say,

  976. isn't this thing

  977. a beautiful thing?

  978. It serves

  979. a purpose.

  980. And so,

  981. the fourth primer

  982. I wanted to make here,

  983. help you anticipate,

  984. was this passage,

  985. it's carefully crafted.

  986. But the fifth primer

  987. is this craftsmanship,

  988. it makes a point.

  989. Now,

  990. if you look up

  991. on the screen,

  992. did you notice

  993. how the shape

  994. of the structure

  995. is like the pointing

  996. of an arrow?

  997. Do you see it?

  998. Where is the arrow

  999. pointing?

  1000. It's pointing

  1001. at the center

  1002. of the chiasm.

  1003. And so,

  1004. Matthew has,

  1005. under the inspiration

  1006. of the Holy Spirit,

  1007. arranged it this way

  1008. to call your attention

  1009. to Jesus.

  1010. These parables

  1011. call your attention

  1012. to Jesus.

  1013. And so,

  1014. these parables

  1015. make a common point.

  1016. It's all about Jesus.

  1017. And in verse 34

  1018. through 35,

  1019. Matthew,

  1020. the narrator,

  1021. inserts himself,

  1022. which is an indicator

  1023. just from the start.

  1024. Hey,

  1025. something going on here.

  1026. And he says that

  1027. Jesus speaking parables

  1028. is the fulfillment

  1029. of Psalm 78 too.

  1030. That doesn't happen

  1031. every day.

  1032. It's a big claim.

1033. But he doesn't stay there.

1034. He goes on to say

  1035. in verses 36

  1036. through 43

  1037. is the explanation

  1038. of the parable

  1039. of the weeds.

  1040. And in that explanation,

  1041. Jesus references

  1042. himself as

  1043. the Son of Man

  1044. twice.

  1045. And so,

  1046. what your attention

  1047. is called to

  1048. is nowhere else

  1049. in Matthew 13

  1050. does Jesus refer

  1051. to himself

1052. as the Son of Man.

  1053. Just here.

  1054. And Matthew

  1055. has it here

1056. to bring to your mind

  1057. that Jesus

  1058. is the focal point

  1059. of all these parables.

  1060. They're parables

  1061. of the kingdom

  1062. and the kingdom

  1063. is all about Jesus.

  1064. He is the great

  1065. fulfiller.

  1066. Now,

  1067. coming back

  1068. kind of around

  1069. your ability

  1070. to understand

  1071. a parable

  1072. has everything

  1073. to do

  1074. with your posture

  1075. of heart

  1076. towards Jesus.

  1077. If you're

  1078. hard-hearted

  1079. towards Jesus,

  1080. you're not going

  1081. to understand

  1082. His parables.

  1083. It's the vertical blinds

  1084. that are going to

  1085. close out

1086. the truth of the kingdom

  1087. to you.

  1088. But if you're

  1089. humble of heart,

  1090. poor in spirit,

  1091. His parables

  1092. will reveal

  1093. the spiritual truth

  1094. they convey

  1095. about the kingdom.

  1096. And it's amazing.

  1097. It's all about Jesus.

1098. It's all about His grace.

  1099. So, in closing,

  1100. I hope I have primed

  1101. your pump

  1102. for the parables.

  1103. Remember,

  1104. a parable is a tool.

  1105. And it uses comparison

  1106. to provoke a response.

  1107. A parable has a dual purpose.

  1108. Vertical blinds.

  1109. Parables have interwoven themes

1110. that hold them all together.

  1111. It's a rich tapestry

  1112. in Matthew 13.

  1113. And these parables

  1114. have a careful design.

  1115. It's called a chiasm.

  1116. And of course,

  1117. these parables

  1118. make a common point.

  1119. It's all about Jesus.

  1120. I hope you've had

  1121. your pump primed

  1122. because next week

  1123. we're going to take

  1124. a detailed look

  1125. at the parable

  1126. of the sower.

  1127. Let's pray.

  1128. God in heaven,

1129. we thank you so much

  1130. for Jesus.

  1131. We thank you

1132. for the Gospel of Matthew.

  1133. We thank you

  1134. for our Bibles

  1135. and the beauty

  1136. of the literature

1137. that is in our hands.

  1138. Thank you, God,

  1139. for this chiasm.

  1140. Thank you

1141. for the loveliness of it.

  1142. Thank you

  1143. for these parables.

  1144. Thank you, God,

  1145. that you have given

1146. many of us in this room

  1147. ears to hear

  1148. and eyes to see.

  1149. We are so thankful

  1150. for that.

  1151. But God,

  1152. we're also aware

  1153. that these parables

  1154. are all about Jesus.

  1155. And so,

1156. over the next few weeks

  1157. as we're heading

  1158. through these parables,

  1159. God,

1160. would you make Jesus clear?

  1161. Would you teach us

1162. about the kingdom of heaven,

1163. the saving reign of God?

  1164. And God,

1165. you would have your way

  1166. with us

  1167. with the parables

  1168. that you would reveal

  1169. yourself to us,

1170. that you would change us,

1171. that you would make us

  1172. a people who are

  1173. faithful disciples

  1174. on mission,

  1175. following after our King,

  1176. our Savior,

  1177. Jesus.

1178. Thank you for this time
