  1. Well, if you'd open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 13, as you're turning there, I think

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2. it's very important for you to know that last Sunday in our sermon, I launched a new men's

  3. cologne.

  4. I'm not sure if you remember that.

  5. It's called Weekend Warrior.

  6. It's a cologne made by men and for men.

  7. It's one-third chainsaw exhaust extract, one-third wood chip extract, and one-third male sweat.

  8. Call it musk.

  9. Well, after the service last week, I went downstairs to the fellowship hall and I was sitting next

  10. to two sisters in Christ and they had their own fragrance they wanted to launch.

  11. And it was not a perfume.

  12. It's a disinfectant called Be Gone Weekend Warrior.

  13. A disinfectant made by women for men.

  14. Last week, I sought to prime the pump of your heart to receive the parables of the kingdom

  15. of heaven from Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  16. There are eight parables in Matthew 13 and they're all structured in a very special way.

  17. It's like an arrow.

  18. And so the first four parables, it's like the 45 degree angle down in the front of an arrow

  19. and the last four parables are a 45 degree angle up in an arrow and they're all pointing

  20. to the same thing in 34 through 43 and that's Jesus.

  21. All the parables are about Jesus and specifically how we are to respond to Him.

  22. And so this morning, we're going to be looking at the first parable, the parable of the sower or the parable of the soils.

  23. And what we're going to do is we're going to look at the three sections that Matthew lays out for us.

  24. There's the parable of the soils itself in verses 3 through 9.

  25. And then there's the explanation for why Jesus speaks in parables in verses 10 through 17.

  26. And then in verses 18 through 23, Jesus comes all the way back and explains for us what the parable of the sower means.

  27. And just to let you know, that's a bit unusual.

  28. When you have Jesus explaining one of His own parables, it's like gold.

  29. It's awesome.

  30. And He has something to say to all of us today.

  31. I just want to remind you of a couple of other things.

  32. A parable is a teaching tool in which Jesus will paint a very vivid picture of an everyday experience.

  33. And this morning, it's going to be farming, sowing.

  34. And He's painting that picture in order to make a spiritual point.

  35. To reveal the truth of the kingdom of heaven.

  36. And it calls for a response.

  37. And so, the response begins now.

  38. Here's what I'd like you to start thinking about.

  39. As we make our way through the parable of the soils,

  40. would you start asking yourself this question?

  41. Which soil best characterizes my heart?

  42. That's where I want you to start in right now.

  43. Be asking that question as we walk through this passage.

  44. And so, let's look now at the parable of the soils.

  45. In verses 3 through 9, Jesus actually speaks the parable.

  46. Read with me.

  47. Let's start in verse 1.

  48. That same day, Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea.

  49. And great crowds gathered about Him so that He got into a boat and sat down.

  50. And the whole crowd stood on the beach.

  51. And He told them many things in parable, saying,

  52. A sower went out to sow.

  53. And as He sowed, some seeds fell along the path.

  54. And the birds came and devoured them.

  55. Other seeds fell on rocky ground where they did not have much soil.

  56. And immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil.

  57. But when the sun rose, they were scorched.

  58. And since they had no root, they withered away.

  59. Other seeds fell among thorns.

  60. And the thorns grew up and choked them.

  61. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain.

  62. Some a hundred fold.

  63. Some sixty.

  64. Some thirty.

  65. He who has ears, let him hear.

  66. So here's the background.

  67. Jesus shows up on this beach on the Sea of Galilee.

  68. And He takes a seat, which was the normal way rabbis would teach in that day.

  69. But what happens is a huge throng of people come.

  70. And He's out of space.

  71. So He takes a step back.

  72. He gets into this thirty-foot Galilean kind of fishing boat.

  73. And the crowds kind of throng in.

  74. And they're all standing on the beach.

  75. So what you have here is a natural amphitheater.

  76. And so Jesus starts to speak to them in parables.

  77. And in verses three and four, He starts with this sower.

  78. Now, if you don't know what a sower is, a sower is basically a farmer.

  79. And everybody on the beach on that moment would know what Jesus is talking about.

  80. Because either they were a sower themselves, they were a farmer.

  81. Or they sowed kind of part-time, they were a farmer part-time.

  82. Or they knew someone who was a farmer.

  83. And so here's Jesus the carpenter in a fishing boat talking about kind of farming.

  84. And everybody got it.

  85. He is pointing, painting a picture of an everyday experience to make a spiritual point.

  86. To bring some things out about the kingdom of heaven.

  87. And so, what is this sower doing?

  88. In verse four, we see that this sower is sowing his seed.

  89. And back in the day, what would happen is a farmer, a sower, would have a basket with all the same seed in the basket.

  90. And he would walk out on his plot.

  91. And he would take the seed.

  92. And he would scatter it in a very controlled manner.

  93. And so he would scatter the seed all along his plot.

  94. And you can imagine that seed, though falling on good soil, would fall on all other kinds of soils as well.

  95. And that's where Jesus wants to draw our focus.

  96. He wants us to show us four different kinds of soils.

  97. And so let's look at verse number four.

  98. We read, and as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path.

  99. Now, the path would be a compacted soil.

  100. Paths would be all around these farmer plots, even through them.

  101. And so this is where people walked.

  102. You had to get to the quick and save of the day.

  103. You took a path.

  104. You walked.

  105. And so it would be the equivalent of if you're driving out 50 and you're driving by one of those big cornfields.

  106. You know those side paths that the farmers drive their heavy equipment on?

  107. You can't grow anything on those because it's compacted.

  108. It's hard soil.

  109. It's the soil of the path.

  110. And what Jesus brings out is not only is it hard, it doesn't produce anything.

  111. The seed falls on it, and you see what happens?

  112. Birds of the air come and devour it.

  113. It doesn't yield anything.

  114. It doesn't produce anything.

  115. That's the first soil condition.

  116. It's the compacted soil.

  117. Now look at verse 5.

  118. This is the second soil.

  119. Other seeds fell on rocky ground.

  120. Now, when you hear rocky ground, I'm not in your brain, so I can't see what your brain is thinking right now.

  121. But I'm guessing you're thinking, okay, there's a lot of big rocks on the ground.

  122. Or there's this soil mixed with these little kind of small rocks.

  123. That's not what Jesus is talking about.

  124. That's not what Jesus is talking about.

  125. In Galilee right now, there is this limestone bedrock that oftentimes lies within about an inch or a half inch underneath the soil.

  126. So there's this very thin veneer of soil over this limestone bedrock.

  127. So it's a concealed bedrock soil, if that makes any sense.

  128. And so what you can imagine as a result of that is it's very shallow soil.

  129. And so if you read for the rest on verse 5, other seeds fell on rocky ground where they did not have much soil.

  130. And immediately they sprang up since they had no depth of soil.

  131. But when the sun rose, they were scorched.

  132. And since they had no root, they withered away.

  133. And so here the seed is received in very thin soil.

  134. And the result is a quick growth only to be withered and scorched by the rising sun.

  135. So let me ask you, what's the yield?

  136. There's no yield.

  137. It doesn't produce anything.

  138. Let's go on to the next soil.

  139. Soil condition number 3.

  140. We see that in verse 7.

  141. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

  142. So this is the soil of competing growths.

  143. And so apparently, the sower sows the seed.

  144. It falls into some good soil.

  145. It's received.

  146. It even starts to grow.

  147. But alongside of it is growing some thorns.

  148. Now, I don't know about you, but we had a house where we had a raspberry patch.

  149. You know those crazy thorns?

  150. There's no way you can plant anything.

  151. You need napalm to get rid of raspberry bushes.

  152. There's no growing anything.

  153. And so what Jesus is pointing to here is this, oh yeah, the seed fell on pretty good soil, but as it started growing up, it got choked out by other things growing in the same soil.

  154. What's the yield?

  155. There's no yield.

  156. It doesn't produce anything.

  157. It has a little growth, but it gets choked out.

  158. Now look at verse 8.

  159. The fourth soil.

  160. The quote unquote good soil.

  161. The choice soil.

  162. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain.

  163. Some 100 fold, some 60, some 30.

  164. So this choice soil is the soil that the seed grows in.

  165. And it grows and produces a yield.

  166. So this soil must not have been compacted.

  167. Somehow it was loosened up.

  168. Somehow this soil wasn't a shallow soil.

  169. That there wasn't any bedrock underneath.

  170. There was depth to the soil.

  171. There was room for rooting.

  172. And this soil must have been cleared.

  173. Because there's no thorns to be found.

  174. This is prepared soil.

  175. This is soil that had been readied.

  176. This is soil that was waiting for the seed.

  177. This is the soil that produces.

  178. Produces a yield.

  179. The first three soils, the compacted soil, right?

  180. The just under the surface soil,

  181. that bedrock soil,

  182. and then that weedy soil,

  183. they didn't produce anything.

  184. But the good soil,

  185. it produces a yield.

  186. 100 fold, which was an amazing yield.

  187. 60 fold, which is a pretty good yield.

  188. 30 years, it was like,

  189. yeah, that's okay.

  190. But the point is,

  191. it all yields.

  192. So, we have four different soils,

  193. but we have two different yields.

  194. One produces grain in much abundance.

  195. The other three don't produce anything.

  196. Look at verse 9.

  197. After speaking this parable to the crowds,

  198. Jesus says something very interesting.

  199. He says,

  200. He who has ears,

  201. let him hear.

  202. Is he doing a mic check?

  203. Hey, can you guys hear me out there?

  204. He's not doing a mic check.

  205. He's saying something much different.

  206. He's saying,

  207. if you can understand

  208. what I'm saying

  209. about the kingdom right now,

  210. take it to heart.

  211. Receive it.

  212. And so what Jesus is doing here,

  213. He's calling for a response.

  214. And He seems to be very subtly

  215. making a distinction.

  216. Apparently, in Jesus' minds,

  217. there are people who have ears

  218. but can't hear.

  219. And there are people

  220. who have a different set of ears

  221. that can hear.

  222. And we're left asking the question,

  223. well, what accounts for the difference?

  224. Why can some people hear

  225. but not hear

  226. and produce nothing

  227. where there's other people

  228. who hear, receive,

  229. and they produce a yield?

  230. What accounts for the difference?

  231. Well, that's where Jesus goes next.

  232. So we've looked at the parables

  233. themselves, 3 through 9.

  234. Now we're going to look

  235. at the next passage,

  236. part of this passage,

  237. 10 through 17.

  238. Read it with me.

  239. Then the disciples came

  240. and said to Him,

  241. Why do you speak to them

  242. in parables?

  243. And He answered them,

  244. To you it has been given

  245. to know the secrets

  246. of the kingdom of heaven,

  247. but to them it has not been given.

  248. For to the one who has,

  249. more will be given,

  250. and he will have an abundance,

  251. but from the one who has not,

  252. even what he has

  253. will be taken away from him.

  254. This is why I speak to them

  255. in parables,

  256. because seeing they do not see,

  257. and hearing they do not hear,

  258. nor do they understand.

  259. Indeed, in their case,

  260. the prophecy of Isaiah

  261. is fulfilled that says,

  262. You will indeed hear,

  263. but never understand,

  264. and you will indeed see,

  265. but never perceive.

  266. For this people's heart

  267. has grown dull,

  268. and with their ears

  269. they can barely hear,

  270. and their eyes they have closed,

  271. lest they should see

  272. with their eyes,

  273. and hear with their ears,

  274. and understand with their heart,

  275. in turn,

  276. and I would heal them.

  277. But blessed are your eyes,

  278. disciples,

  279. for they see,

  280. and your ears,

  281. for they hear.

  282. For truly, I say to you,

  283. many prophets and righteous people

  284. long to see what you see,

  285. and did not see it,

  286. and to hear what you hear,

  287. and did not hear it.

  288. There is a lot of seeing

  289. and hearing going on here.

  290. Here's what Jesus is doing.

  291. Jesus just shares this parable.

  292. His disciples quickly realized,

  293. hey man,

  294. He's changing His M.O. here.

  295. He's preaching in parables now.

  296. What's up with that?

  297. And so you've got to imagine,

  298. here's the crowd on the beach,

  299. here's this 30-foot

  300. kind of Galilean fishing boat,

  301. and apparently,

  302. the disciples are on the boat with Him,

  303. and they take kind of an aside.

  304. They're like,

  305. Jesus,

  306. why are You speaking to them

  307. in parables?

  308. And in this kind of little huddle

  309. on the boat,

  310. Jesus explains why.

  311. And He explains why,

  312. and He's explaining to us too.

  313. He's helping us to understand

  314. why some respond one way

  315. and others respond another way.

  316. So, in verse 10,

  317. the disciples say,

  318. why do you speak to them

  319. to the crowds in parables?

  320. And look where Jesus begins

  321. in verse 11.

  322. Jesus starts by saying,

  323. because there's a difference

  324. between you two.

  325. You guys have something

  326. that they don't.

  327. Look at verse 11.

  328. To you it has been given

  329. to know the secrets

  330. of the kingdom of heaven,

  331. but to them it has not been given.

  332. To you it's been given,

  333. but to them it's not been given.

  334. Jesus starts by saying,

  335. there's a difference

  336. between the two of you.

  337. I'm speaking to them in parables

  338. because there's a difference

  339. between the two of you.

  340. Do you notice

  341. what makes the difference?

  342. In verse 11,

  343. I just want you to kind of focus in

  344. on those two words,

  345. to know.

  346. To you it has been given

  347. to know the secrets

  348. of the kingdom of heaven.

  349. You've been given an understanding.

  350. You've been given an insight.

  351. You've been given something

  352. that you couldn't figure out yourself,

  353. nor could they on their own.

  354. You've been given something.

  355. Jesus is saying that

  356. they've been given a secret.

  357. What have they been given?

  358. The secrets of the kingdom of heaven.

  359. Now when you see the word secret

  360. being used by Jesus here,

  361. and later Paul will talk about secrets.

  362. What it is,

  363. is not some kind of unknown mystery.

  364. Rather,

  365. it is truth that is hidden

  366. from sinful minds

  367. that is revealed by God's grace

  368. to those who He prepares.

  369. And so Jesus is saying,

  370. to you it has been given

  371. a God-given knowledge

  372. of the secrets

  373. of the kingdom of heaven.

  374. I love planning surprises

  375. for my wife.

  376. I just love it.

  377. I love doing things

  378. in secret.

  379. Whether it's buying a gift

  380. or planning a little trip

  381. for the two of us,

  382. I just love doing it.

  383. But here's the deal.

  384. about two weeks in,

  385. I can't keep the secret.

  386. I get so excited.

  387. I get so,

  388. I want her to share

  389. in this knowledge

  390. that I am keeping

  391. hidden from her.

  392. And so I usually

  393. spill the beans like this.

  394. I know something

  395. you don't know.

  396. And after 21 and a half years

  397. of marriage,

  398. Jenny knows that means

  399. in about three days

  400. he's going to spill the beans.

  401. And at that time,

  402. I make known to her,

  403. I reveal the truth

  404. of this hidden secret

  405. to her.

  406. Jesus is talking about

  407. when God gives

  408. to know the secrets,

  409. it's revelation.

  410. God is giving eyes

  411. to see.

  412. God is giving ears

  413. to hear.

  414. He's giving understanding.

  415. Not of unknowable mysteries,

  416. but of the truth

  417. of the kingdom

  418. of heaven.

  419. Like what?

  420. What kind of secrets

  421. are we talking about?

  422. Well, the kingdom of heaven

  423. is not for the rich,

  424. but for the poor.

  425. The poor in spirit.

  426. The kingdom of heaven

  427. is not for the healthy,

  428. but for those who know

  429. that they are sin-sick.

  430. The kingdom of heaven

  431. is not about your resume

  432. of good deeds

  433. that you can lay out

  434. before God

  435. and say,

  436. look how wonderful I am.

  437. The kingdom of heaven

  438. is about your heart

  439. for God.

  440. It's about worship.

  441. The kingdom of heaven

  442. is not just limited

  443. to Jews.

  444. The kingdom of heaven

  445. is open to Jews

  446. and Gentiles.

  447. That's a secret

  448. that's being made known.

  449. The kingdom of heaven

  450. is not some

  451. political kingdom

  452. that uses political

  453. muscle and military

  454. might

  455. to force an agenda.

  456. The kingdom of heaven

  457. conquers sinful,

  458. rebellious hearts

  459. through grace

  460. of a suffering servant.

  461. The king who inaugurated

  462. the kingdom

  463. is not a Caesar

  464. on a white war horse

  465. who enters in

  466. leading legions

  467. of ripped,

  468. ready-to-battle warriors.

  469. sinners.

  470. No, Jesus.

  471. It's Palm Sunday today.

  472. Jesus came into Jerusalem

  473. on a donkey.

  474. And He came in

  475. knowing that He was

  476. not to be served,

  477. but to serve

  478. and to give His life

  479. as a ransom for many.

  480. The king of the kingdom

  481. of heaven, Jesus,

  482. was born in a backwater town.

  483. He came in weakness,

  484. not in human strength.

  485. The secret of the kingdom

  486. is that it's upside down

  487. to the kingdom

  488. of the world.

  489. And God gives eyes

  490. to see it.

  491. In fact,

  492. Jesus is saying

  493. it's only by God's grace

  494. that you can see

  495. the upside-down kingdom

  496. of Jesus.

  497. That's why Jesus emphasizes

  498. that word given

  499. in verses 11 and 12.

  500. To you it has been given

  501. to know the secrets

  502. of the kingdom.

  503. It's not from themselves.

  504. It was given

  505. from someone else

  506. to them.

  507. And for these

  508. unbelieving crowds,

  509. to them it had not

  510. been given.

  511. When you hear

  512. the word given,

  513. you need to be thinking

  514. grace.

  515. Undeserved.

  516. Unearned.

  517. Even.

  518. Unable.

  519. God's grace

  520. does something

  521. that we can't do.

  522. We see it in Ephesians 2.

  523. We are dead in our sins,

  524. but God in His mercy,

  525. He made us alive

  526. together with Christ.

  527. By grace,

  528. you have been saved.

  529. Made alive.

  530. And here,

  531. we see God's grace

  532. is enabling grace,

  533. giving a knowledge

  534. of the secrets

  535. of the kingdom of heaven.

  536. So what Jesus is saying here

  537. is the only way

  538. a sinner can know

  539. the secrets of the kingdom

  540. of heaven is if God

  541. by His grace

  542. gives them this knowledge.

  543. He's preparing the soil.

  544. He's getting it ready

  545. to receive the word.

  546. So what a parable does

  547. is a parable simultaneously

  548. hides the kingdom

  549. from the heart of hearts

  550. and reveals it

  551. to those whose hearts

  552. by God's grace

  553. have been prepared

  554. to receive it.

  555. It's the good soil.

  556. So what we're saying here

  557. is that the kingdom

  558. is revealed

  559. by God's grace

  560. and that helps you understand

  561. and know what Jesus

  562. is talking about

  563. in verse 12

  564. because in verse 12

  565. you're like,

  566. what are you saying?

  567. For the one who has,

  568. more of what will be given?

  569. And he will have an abundance,

  570. but from the one who has not,

  571. even what he has

  572. will be taken.

  573. What is he talking about?

  574. He who has been given

  575. to know the secrets

  576. of the kingdom of heaven

  577. will be given more.

  578. And those who have not been given

  579. the knowledge of the secret

  580. of the kingdom of heaven

  581. by God's grace,

  582. what they have

  583. will be taken away.

  584. It's a kind of judgment.

  585. So Jesus begins his explanation

  586. by pointing out

  587. the difference

  588. between the disciples

  589. and the unresponsive crowds.

  590. The difference,

  591. Jesus says,

  592. hey,

  593. God has opened your eyes up

  594. by his grace

  595. so that you can receive

  596. what I'm talking about

  597. in parables,

  598. but to them

  599. it's not been given.

  600. And the parables

  601. are the vertical blinds

  602. that are getting it done.

  603. In verse 13,

  604. we see that he says,

  605. this is why I speak

  606. in parables to them

  607. because seeing they do not see,

  608. hearing they do not hear,

  609. nor do they understand.

  610. It hasn't been given to them.

  611. He speaks in parables

  612. to hide the kingdom

  613. from those with hardened hearts.

  614. But in verses 14-15,

  615. we see more.

  616. He quotes Isaiah 6, 9-10.

  617. The unresponsiveness

  618. of the Jewish crowds

  619. at that time

  620. fulfilled Isaiah 6, 9, and 10.

  621. You will indeed hear

  622. but never understand

  623. and you will indeed see

  624. but never perceive.

  625. For this people's heart

  626. has grown dull

  627. and with their ears

  628. they can barely hear

  629. and their eyes

  630. they have closed

  631. lest they should see

  632. with their eyes

  633. and hear with their ears

  634. and understand with their hearts

  635. and turn

  636. and I would heal them.

  637. This is Jesus

  638. speaking to his disciples

  639. on that boat

  640. with the crowds

  641. mingling around.

  642. He's saying

  643. they haven't been given

  644. eyes to see.

  645. And it's a fulfillment

  646. of Isaiah 6, 9, and 10.

  647. And I just want you

  648. to remind you

  649. someone greater

  650. than Isaiah is here.

  651. If Isaiah is preaching

  652. hardened Israel's hearts

  653. the preaching of the parables

  654. by the Prince of Peace

  655. would not just hide the kingdom

  656. but it would further hand

  657. hardened hearts over.

  658. It's a kind of judgment.

  659. The parables hide the kingdom

  660. and hand over the hardened hearts.

  661. But not all Jews in Jesus' day

  662. were spiritually blind and deaf.

  663. Look at verse 16.

  664. He turns from the crowds

  665. and he turns to his disciples

  666. and he says

  667. but blessed are your eyes

  668. for they see

  669. and your eyes

  670. for they hear.

  671. He comes back

  672. hey

  673. God's grace

  674. has lit you up.

  675. You've been given

  676. a knowledge

  677. not your own

  678. from outside of you.

  679. It's God's kindness to you.

  680. You're blessed

  681. by that.

  682. And so

  683. for the hardened hearts

  684. a parable serves

  685. to hide the truth

  686. and to further

  687. harden their hearts.

  688. But for those

  689. who have hearts

  690. that God's grace

  691. has prepared

  692. a parable reveals

  693. the truth of the kingdom

  694. to them.

  695. And they're blessed by it.

  696. And you know what further?

  697. They bear fruit.

  698. Just one more

  699. couple of things.

  700. Verse 17

  701. For truly I say to you

  702. many prophets

  703. and righteous people

  704. long to see what you see

  705. and do not see it

  706. and to hear what you hear

  707. and did not hear it.

  708. You know what Jesus

  709. is saying there?

  710. He's saying

  711. you know what

  712. there's prophets

  713. back in the Old Testament

  714. and righteous people too

  715. that were just waiting

  716. for this time.

  717. They were waiting

  718. to hear what I'm telling

  719. you all these people.

  720. They longed for it.

  721. But they never heard it.

  722. You got to hear it.

  723. Blessed are you.

  724. I just want you

  725. to see one more thing.

  726. We see in verse 11

  727. it's God who initiates

  728. by His grace.

  729. He gives insight

  730. into the kingdom of heaven.

  731. And then in verse 12

  732. I believe

  733. no excuse me

  734. 13

  735. no excuse me

  736. 14

  737. He says

  738. these people on the beach

  739. they fulfill Isaiah 6

  740. 9 and 10.

  741. And then in verse 17

  742. He says

  743. hey many prophets

  744. and righteous people

  745. long to see what you see.

  746. Are you getting the sense

  747. of what Jesus is saying here?

  748. God is sovereign

  749. and in control

  750. of all things.

  751. He's reigning over everything.

  752. He even gives people

  753. insight

  754. into the secrets

  755. of the kingdom of heaven.

  756. It's by His grace.

  757. He's sovereign over all.

  758. So why is Jesus speaking

  759. in parables?

  760. Parables?

  761. Well parables

  762. are the vertical blinds

  763. that hide

  764. and harden

  765. the unbelieving

  766. and reveal

  767. and bless

  768. those whose hearts

  769. God has prepared.

  770. And those

  771. whose God

  772. has prepared

  773. their hearts

  774. they bear fruit.

  775. So here's what

  776. this means for us.

  777. Let's say

  778. we're out

  779. on the street

  780. in your neighborhood

  781. and you're sharing

  782. the gospel with people.

  783. You've got people

  784. you love.

  785. You're seeking

  786. to see them

  787. become Christians.

  788. You're sharing

  789. the kingdom with them.

  790. You're telling

  791. about King Jesus

  792. and they don't

  793. give a rip.

  794. Well we rest

  795. in knowing

  796. that God

  797. is in control.

  798. We don't need

  799. to jump

  800. and start asking

  801. the question

  802. is there something

  803. wrong with the message?

  804. We're just going

  805. to rest and know

  806. okay God

  807. now's not the time.

  808. We're going to

  809. trust you.

  810. But what happens

  811. if as we're out there

  812. preaching the gospel

  813. people start

  814. to respond?

  815. They say yes

  816. I want to become

  817. a follower of Jesus.

  818. Well we rejoice.

  819. We rejoice

  820. in that God

  821. by His grace

  822. would open up

  823. their eyes.

  824. So this morning

  825. in this baptism

  826. we rejoice

  827. that Kelly

  828. and Dan

  829. and Megan

  830. and me

  831. and if you're

  832. a believer

  833. you that God

  834. would open your eyes

  835. up by His grace.

  836. He didn't wait

  837. for you to invite Him.

  838. He initiated

  839. that in you

  840. by His grace.

  841. Here's what this

  842. means for us.

  843. In our evangelism

  844. this produces

  845. resolve.

  846. The effect is

  847. okay

  848. we're going to

  849. move forward

  850. we're going to

  851. share the gospel

  852. with people

  853. people are going

  854. to respond

  855. in different ways

  856. we're trusting God

  857. to light people up

  858. to give them

  859. insight into the

  860. kingdom of heaven.

  861. we'll trust Him

  862. for that

  863. but it gives us

  864. confidence

  865. moving forward.

  866. We can trust

  867. our God.

  868. This section

  869. in 10-17

  870. gives us

  871. a little key

  872. to understanding

  873. what Jesus

  874. means when He

  875. says

  876. if you have

  877. hears

  878. hear.

  879. Because now

  880. look at the

  881. first word

  882. in verse 18

  883. He says

  884. to His disciples

  885. hear then

  886. the parables

  887. of the sower.

  888. He's saying

  889. to His disciples

  890. okay guys

  891. understand the

  892. parable.

  893. God has given

  894. you

  895. to know

  896. the secrets.

  897. Let me explain

  898. it to you.

  899. And so

  900. He starts off

  901. with that word

  902. hear

  903. in verse 18

  904. He's saying

  905. understand this.

  906. And then in

  907. verse 19

  908. He says

  909. when anyone

  910. hears the word

  911. of the kingdom

  912. and does not

  913. understand it

  914. see what He's

  915. doing?

  916. Back in the

  917. parable

  918. Jesus talked

  919. about a sower

  920. sowing seed.

  921. And what Jesus

  922. is doing here

  923. is He's making

  924. the connection

  925. between a sower

  926. sowing seed

  927. and Him

  928. sowing the seed

  929. of the kingdom

  930. of heaven.

  931. the word

  932. of the kingdom.

  933. It's like seed

  934. that we scatter.

  935. When Jesus

  936. spoke in

  937. parables of

  938. the kingdom

  939. He was

  940. sowing

  941. seed

  942. of the kingdom.

  943. He was

  944. evangelizing.

  945. And what we

  946. see here

  947. in the remaining

  948. of this

  949. explanation

  950. is we see

  951. how the word

  952. of the kingdom

  953. is received

  954. and then

  955. responded to.

  956. So let's

  957. look at these

  958. four heart

  959. conditions.

  960. And notice

  961. it's all about

  962. the heart.

  963. Look at the

  964. end of verse

  965. 19.

  966. Middle of it.

  967. The evil one

  968. comes and snatches

  969. away what has

  970. been sown

  971. in his heart.

  972. And then if you

  973. look at 14

  974. or actually 15

  975. for this people's

  976. heart has

  977. grown dull.

  978. And if you look

  979. further down and

  980. understand where

  981. their heart

  982. turned, then I

  983. would heal them.

  984. Jesus is very

  985. concerned about

  986. the heart.

  987. He wants your

  988. heart.

  989. Your heart,

  990. according to

  991. the Jewish

  992. mind, would

  993. be the seat

  994. of your thinking,

  995. of your feeling,

  996. and of your

  997. will.

  998. What controls

  999. your heart

  1000. controls your

  1001. life.

  1002. It's from your

  1003. heart that you

  1004. worship.

  1005. It's from your

  1006. heart that you

  1007. live for things.

  1008. And so Jesus

  1009. is making the

  1010. connection for us

  1011. that when he

  1012. talks about the

  1013. soils,

  1014. he's talking

  1015. about the

  1016. condition of

  1017. people's hearts.

  1018. So let's look

  1019. at these

  1020. conditions.

  1021. Condition

  1022. number one,

  1023. verse 19,

  1024. we read this,

  1025. when anyone

  1026. hears the word

  1027. of the kingdom

  1028. and does not

  1029. understand it,

  1030. the evil one

  1031. comes and

  1032. snatches away

  1033. what has been

  1034. sown in his

  1035. heart.

  1036. This is what

  1037. was sown

  1038. along the

  1039. path.

  1040. What Jesus

  1041. is saying

  1042. is that

  1043. this first

  1044. heart condition

  1045. is the

  1046. calloused

  1047. heart.

  1048. I'm guessing

  1049. if you talk

  1050. to a person

  1051. about this

  1052. about Jesus

  1053. that you're

  1054. speaking the

  1055. gospel to

  1056. them and

  1057. it just

  1058. kind of

  1059. bounces off,

  1060. they're like,

  1061. well,

  1062. I don't

  1063. know what

  1064. you're

  1065. talking about.

  1066. They haven't

  1067. been given

  1068. eyes to see

  1069. it yet,

  1070. hearts to

  1071. receive it.

  1072. there's no

  1073. yield in

  1074. this person's

  1075. life.

  1076. And furthermore,

  1077. we read what

  1078. happens.

  1079. The devil

  1080. comes and

  1081. snatches it

  1082. away.

  1083. We're in a

  1084. battle.

  1085. But God is

  1086. reigning over

  1087. it all.

  1088. When we

  1089. encounter

  1090. someone with

  1091. a heart

  1092. that's

  1093. callous to

  1094. the gospel,

  1095. you don't

  1096. need to take

  1097. it personally.

  1098. What you

  1099. need to

  1100. understand is

  1101. that, okay,

  1102. God hasn't

  1103. moved in

  1104. this person's

  1105. heart yet.

  1106. And here's

  1107. where you go

  1108. with that.

  1109. You pray.

  1110. You say,

  1111. oh, Lord,

  1112. would you,

  1113. by your

  1114. grace as

  1115. you did

  1116. with me,

  1117. would you

  1118. open this

  1119. person's

  1120. heart to

  1121. the gospel?

  1122. Would you

  1123. give them

  1124. eyes?

  1125. Would you

  1126. give them

  1127. ears?

  1128. Would you

  1129. give them

  1130. understanding

  1131. so that they

  1132. can see

  1133. and hear

  1134. and respond

  1135. and you

  1136. would heal

  1137. them?

  1138. We go to

  1139. our God.

  1140. heart

  1141. condition

  1142. number two,

  1143. we see in

  1144. verses 20

  1145. and 21,

  1146. as for what

  1147. was sown

  1148. on rocky

  1149. ground,

  1150. this is the

  1151. one who

  1152. hears the

  1153. word and

  1154. immediately

  1155. receives it

  1156. with joy,

  1157. yet he

  1158. does not

  1159. root in

  1160. it,

  1161. he has

  1162. no root

  1163. in himself,

  1164. but endures

  1165. for a while,

  1166. and when

  1167. tribulation

  1168. or persecution

  1169. arises on

  1170. account of

  1171. the word,

  1172. immediately

  1173. he falls

  1174. away.

  1175. So,

  1176. remember the

  1177. soil of the

  1178. shallow bedrock

  1179. right underneath

  1180. the limestone

  1181. bedrock,

  1182. Jesus is

  1183. saying that

  1184. pointed to

  1185. a particular

  1186. kind of

  1187. person.

  1188. That when

  1189. you preach

  1190. the gospel

  1191. to them,

  1192. they receive

  1193. it and

  1194. they're like,

  1195. oh yeah,

  1196. I'm going

  1197. to respond,

  1198. woohoo,

  1199. I'm going

  1200. to be a

  1201. follower of

  1202. Jesus.

  1203. And they

  1204. start following

  1205. Jesus,

  1206. and then they

  1207. start catching

  1208. heat for being

  1209. a follower of

  1210. Jesus.

  1211. The very

  1212. word that they

  1213. think that they

  1214. believed,

  1215. they start

  1216. catching

  1217. heat for.

  1218. Remember the

  1219. sun that

  1220. rose,

  1221. scorched?

  1222. It's the

  1223. heat of

  1224. persecution

  1225. and tribulation

  1226. for the

  1227. word.

  1228. You see

  1229. what happens

  1230. in the

  1231. text?

  1232. They fall

  1233. away.

  1234. It's the

  1235. word that we

  1236. get,

  1237. we get the

  1238. word scandal

  1239. from that

  1240. word.

  1241. It can be

  1242. very confusing.

  1243. Look what

  1244. happens.

  1245. I want you

  1246. to see the

  1247. word immediately

  1248. in verse

  1249. 20.

  1250. As for what

  1251. was sown

  1252. on rocky

  1253. ground,

  1254. this is the

  1255. one who

  1256. hears the

  1257. word and

  1258. immediately

  1259. receives it

  1260. with joy,

  1261. yet has no

  1262. root in

  1263. himself,

  1264. but endures

  1265. for a while,

  1266. and when the

  1267. tribulation or

  1268. persecution arises

  1269. on account of

  1270. the word,

  1271. immediately he

  1272. falls away.

  1273. Immediately he

  1274. receives it,

  1275. he catches

  1276. some heat,

  1277. and immediately

  1278. he falls away.

  1279. Do you know

  1280. what that means?

  1281. God hadn't

  1282. opened up their

  1283. eyes.

  1284. They didn't

  1285. have true

  1286. knowledge.

  1287. They weren't

  1288. really saved.

  1289. They had an

  1290. experience, but

  1291. that's about it.

  1292. And when they

  1293. experienced the

  1294. heat of

  1295. persecution, that

  1296. clarified things

  1297. real quick.

  1298. If someone

  1299. professes to be a

  1300. Christian with joy,

  1301. and at the first

  1302. time they suffer

  1303. on account of the

  1304. kingdom, they pack

  1305. it up and say,

  1306. I'm done with

  1307. Jesus, it shows

  1308. that they were

  1309. never truly a

  1310. believer.

  1311. That they never

  1312. were truly

  1313. converted.

  1314. It was a false

  1315. profession.

  1316. There's a bunch

  1317. of guys who are

  1318. studying the book

  1319. of Hebrews on

  1320. Saturday mornings

  1321. here, and guys,

  1322. if you're listening,

  1323. I just wanted to

  1324. let you know

  1325. something.

  1326. You're coming up

  1327. on Hebrews 6.

  1328. It's either this

  1329. coming Saturday

  1330. or the next

  1331. Saturday.

  1332. And the

  1333. parables of the

  1334. soils will help

  1335. you to understand

  1336. it.

  1337. When someone

  1338. claims to have

  1339. become a

  1340. Christian, do

  1341. you know what?

  1342. Time in

  1343. suffering will

  1344. prove whether

  1345. their faith is

  1346. genuine.

  1347. Let's look at the

  1348. third condition,

  1349. heart condition.

  1350. Oh, by the way,

  1351. was there any

  1352. yield?

  1353. No fruit.

  1354. It shot up,

  1355. it withered away,

  1356. no fruit.

  1357. Heart condition

  1358. number three.

  1359. We read in

  1360. verse 22.

  1361. As for what was

  1362. sown among the

  1363. thorns, this is the

  1364. one who hears the

  1365. word, but the cares

1366. of the world and the

  1367. deceitfulness of

  1368. riches choke the

  1369. word, and it

  1370. proves unfruitful.

  1371. So, in the

  1372. parable, those

  1373. thorns that grew

  1374. out of the

  1375. soil alongside

  1376. of the word,

  1377. you know what it's

  1378. pointing to, Jesus

  1379. is saying?

  1380. There are some

  1381. people who are

  1382. going to receive

  1383. the word, and

  1384. there's going to

  1385. be what appears

  1386. to be some

  1387. growth, but out

  1388. of the same

  1389. heart is

  1390. growing

  1391. competing

  1392. loves.

  1393. And those

  1394. competing loves

  1395. for things that

  1396. are not Christ or

  1397. His kingdom, they

  1398. will choke out

  1399. the word.

  1400. And what are the

  1401. competing loves?

  1402. Jesus tells us.

  1403. He says, but the

  1404. cares of the

  1405. world.

  1406. What are the

  1407. cares of the

  1408. world?

  1409. The cares of the

  1410. world are the

  1411. things that the

  1412. world cares about.

  1413. What the world

  1414. values above all

  1415. things.

  1416. And there are a

  1417. lot of warnings in

  1418. our Bibles about

  1419. this.

  1420. 1 John 2, 15.

  1421. Don't love the

  1422. world.

  1423. It talks about

  1424. the desires of

  1425. the flesh, the

  1426. desires of the

  1427. eyes, the pride

  1428. of life.

  1429. It's not from the

  1430. Father, it's from

  1431. the world.

  1432. If there's someone

  1433. who professes to be

  1434. a Christian, and

  1435. they're loving things

  1436. of the world more

  1437. than Jesus, it is

  1438. going to choke the

1439. word in them to no

  1440. yield.

1441. And he goes on to

  1442. talk about the

  1443. deceitfulness of

  1444. riches as another

  1445. weed that will

  1446. choke out the good

  1447. seed.

  1448. There's a lot your

  1449. Bible has to say

  1450. about the deceitfulness

  1451. of riches.

  1452. Jesus in Luke 12

  1453. tells us to take

  1454. care, be on guard.

  1455. Why?

  1456. Because a man's

  1457. life does not

  1458. consist in the

  1459. abundance of his

  1460. possessions.

  1461. Christians.

  1462. It's a lie.

  1463. 1 Timothy 6, 9

  1464. through 10.

  1465. Strong, strong

  1466. warnings about love

  1467. for money.

  1468. It's a trap.

  1469. Matthew 19, 22.

  1470. There's this guy that

  1471. came to Jesus and

1472. said, what must I do

  1473. to inherit eternal

  1474. life?

  1475. And he was a

  1476. wealthy guy.

  1477. And Jesus says, go

  1478. sell everything you

  1479. have, give to the

  1480. poor, and come

  1481. follow me, you'll

  1482. treasure in heaven.

  1483. And this guy walked

  1484. away sad because he

  1485. loved the treasure of

  1486. earth more.

  1487. And of course,

  1488. there's Matthew 26.

  1489. Judas betrayed

  1490. Jesus for four months

  1491. of pain.

  1492. The deceitfulness of

  1493. riches.

  1494. Jesus.

  1495. What Jesus says here

  1496. is that these competing

  1497. loves choke out the

  1498. word and it proves

  1499. unfruitful.

  1500. There's no yield.

  1501. No yield.

  1502. When people profess to

  1503. be Christians, but

  1504. their loves for the

  1505. world and for riches

  1506. go unchanged.

  1507. It chokes out the

  1508. word and it shows

  1509. that they're

  1510. unfruitful and that

  1511. the penny never

  1512. dropped.

1513. This too is a kind

  1514. of a false

  1515. profession.

  1516. Their true loves

  1517. choke out love for

  1518. Christ in the

  1519. kingdom.

  1520. They may have heard

  1521. the word and even

  1522. been sympathetic to

  1523. it.

1524. They may even have a

  1525. great worshipful

  1526. experience.

  1527. But their cares for

  1528. this world and the

  1529. riches, it proves to

  1530. be what they really

  1531. love.

  1532. It's not Jesus.

  1533. Jesus is saying that

  1534. it's a false

  1535. profession.

1536. And for those of us

  1537. living in the West,

  1538. it's a stern warning,

  1539. isn't it?

  1540. It's not.

  1541. We live in abundance.

  1542. The last soil,

  1543. heart condition number

  1544. four, is the choice

  1545. soil.

1546. It points to a heart

  1547. that's been given

  1548. understanding from

  1549. verse 11.

  1550. We read this.

  1551. 23.

  1552. As for what was

  1553. sown on good soil,

1554. this is the one who

  1555. hears the word and

  1556. understands it.

  1557. He's been given

  1558. understanding.

  1559. And it indeed bears

  1560. fruit and yields.

  1561. In one case,

  1562. a hundredfold.

  1563. In another,

  1564. sixty.

  1565. In another,

  1566. thirty.

  1567. The one who hears

  1568. the word and

  1569. understands it

  1570. produces a yield.

  1571. Their life has been

  1572. changed.

  1573. The other three

  1574. heart conditions,

  1575. no change.

  1576. the one God gives

  1577. this insight by His

  1578. grace into the

  1579. kingdom.

  1580. They see the

  1581. gospel for what it

  1582. is.

  1583. They produce a yield.

  1584. They produce fruit.

  1585. And the question that

  1586. you may be asking

  1587. right now is,

  1588. well, what kind of

  1589. fruit?

  1590. What does this yield

  1591. look like?

  1592. Well, we don't have

  1593. to go any further

  1594. than the passage.

  1595. This heart,

  1596. this choice heart,

  1597. is a contrite heart.

  1598. It's turned over.

  1599. Deep soil.

  1600. Cleared of other

  1601. loves.

  1602. Receives the word.

  1603. A contrite heart

  1604. will receive the word

  1605. and it will

  1606. persevere

  1607. when the heat

  1608. rises.

  1609. Someone who has

  1610. received the word

  1611. and believes in it,

  1612. they will endure

  1613. tribulation

  1614. and persecution.

  1615. And they will

  1616. endure it

  1617. while blessing

  1618. the name of Jesus.

  1619. A contrite heart

  1620. will not only

  1621. persevere in

  1622. hardship,

  1623. a contrite heart,

  1624. a God-given

  1625. heart,

  1626. will not

  1627. get choked

  1628. out by

  1629. other loves.

  1630. But their

  1631. love for Christ

  1632. and their love

  1633. for His kingdom,

  1634. it will crowd

  1635. out and

  1636. choke

  1637. out

  1638. all

  1639. other

  1640. claims.

  1641. We'll be

  1642. less and less

  1643. controlled by

  1644. the cares of

  1645. this world.

  1646. We'll be

  1647. less and less

  1648. deceived

  1649. by riches.

  1650. One's life

  1651. does not

  1652. consist of

  1653. the abundance

  1654. of his

  1655. possessions.

  1656. Here's what

  1657. happens when

  1658. someone gets

  1659. radically changed

  1660. by the gospel

  1661. of Jesus.

  1662. When God's

  1663. grace shows up

  1664. and changes

  1665. them.

  1666. The things

  1667. they once

  1668. saw and

  1669. valued,

  1670. they become

  1671. opportunities to

  1672. make much of

  1673. their king.

  1674. So,

  1675. what was once

  1676. the things I was

  1677. running after

  1678. cares for this

  1679. world.

  1680. If I've got

  1681. any possessions,

  1682. I'm going to use

  1683. it for the glory

  1684. of Jesus.

  1685. Money,

  1686. we use it,

  1687. it's entrusted

  1688. to us,

  1689. we're now stewards

1690. of it for the glory

  1691. of Christ,

  1692. the advancement

  1693. of his kingdom.

  1694. All that he has

  1695. given us,

  1696. we become stewards

  1697. of in order to

  1698. advance his kingdom

  1699. for the glory

  1700. of his name.

  1701. We're not

  1702. controlled by

  1703. other loves.

  1704. our love for

  1705. Christ puts

  1706. these other

  1707. loves in their

  1708. place.

  1709. A contrite heart

  1710. will obey

  1711. Jesus in all

  1712. that he commands.

  1713. We live for

  1714. Jesus now.

  1715. We live for

  1716. his kingdom.

  1717. When Jesus

  1718. is raised from

  1719. the dead,

  1720. we're going to

  1721. see this next

  1722. week on Easter

  1723. Sunday.

  1724. When Jesus

  1725. is raised from

  1726. the dead,

  1727. he then goes

  1728. and commands

  1729. all of his

  1730. disciples everywhere

  1731. to go make

  1732. disciples of the

  1733. nations.

  1734. Now, you may be

  1735. a Christian in

  1736. this sanctuary

  1737. and you say,

  1738. yes, I agree

  1739. with that.

  1740. Great.

  1741. But what Jesus

  1742. is saying is,

  1743. I want more

  1744. than your

  1745. agreement.

  1746. I want you to

  1747. bear the fruit

  1748. of prioritizing

  1749. your life and

  1750. actually making

  1751. disciples of the

  1752. nations.

  1753. That's what he's

  1754. called us to.

  1755. We live for him

  1756. now.

  1757. When our grace

  1758. awakened hearts

  1759. compel us,

  1760. it compels us

  1761. to obey him

  1762. in all things.

  1763. It moves from

  1764. more than

  1765. agreement to

  1766. now I

  1767. prioritize.

  1768. My life

  1769. changes because

  1770. he's changed

  1771. me.

  1772. When we

  1773. proclaim Jesus

  1774. and his

  1775. kingdom,

  1776. we're going to

  1777. get a variety

  1778. of responses.

  1779. But we need

  1780. not be surprised.

  1781. Jesus has

  1782. prepared us.

  1783. But we also

  1784. know this.

  1785. God in

  1786. his sovereign

  1787. grace continues

  1788. to pour out

  1789. his kindness

  1790. on sinners

  1791. to open

  1792. their eyes,

  1793. to give them

  1794. ears to hear,

  1795. to give them

  1796. understanding so

  1797. that they can

  1798. receive the good

  1799. news of the

  1800. kingdom and

  1801. produce a

  1802. bumper crop

  1803. of holiness,

  1804. fruit in keeping

  1805. with repentance.

  1806. At the

  1807. beginning,

  1808. I asked you

  1809. to be asking

  1810. yourself a

  1811. question.

  1812. What soil

  1813. best characterizes

  1814. your heart?

  1815. The compacted

  1816. soil?

  1817. The callous

  1818. heart?

  1819. Is it the

  1820. concealed layer

  1821. of bedrock?

  1822. That

  1823. cursory heart

  1824. that moves

  1825. real quick,

  1826. receives an

  1827. excitement,

  1828. and just falls

  1829. away just as

  1830. fast?

  1831. The competing

  1832. weeds soil?

  1833. The compromised

  1834. heart?

  1835. Is that where

  1836. your heart

  1837. is?

  1838. Or the

  1839. choice soil?

  1840. The

  1841. contrite

  1842. heart?

  1843. The heart

  1844. that's been

  1845. changed by

  1846. God's grace?

  1847. Which one

  1848. best characterizes

  1849. you?

  1850. And no matter

  1851. where you are,

  1852. do you know

  1853. what you can

  1854. do?

  1855. You can cry

  1856. out to the

  1857. God who

  1858. gives all

  1859. grace and

  1860. you can cry

  1861. out to him

  1862. and say,

  1863. oh God,

  1864. give me a

  1865. contrite heart,

  1866. a heart that

  1867. bears more

  1868. and more

  1869. fruit for

  1870. the glory

  1871. of your

  1872. name.

  1873. Let me

  1874. pray.

  1875. God in

  1876. heaven,

  1877. we ask that

  1878. you would do

  1879. a work in

  1880. our midst in

  1881. which you

  1882. would pour

  1883. out your

  1884. grace.

  1885. Give us

  1886. eyes to see

  1887. more and

  1888. more what

  1889. you value

  1890. above all

  1891. and that we

  1892. would value
