  1. If you would turn in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 13, we're going to be looking at the parable of the weeds and the explanation Jesus gives of the parable of the weeds this morning.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2. So I'm going to read both the parable and the explanation.

  3. And so if you would open your Bibles to Matthew 13, 24 through 30, that's the parable.

  4. And then 36 through 43, that's the explanation.

  5. Hear God's word.

  6. He put another parable before them, saying,

  7. The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men slept, were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.

  8. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.

  9. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?

  10. How then does it have weeds?

  11. He said to them, an enemy has done this.

  12. So the servants said to him, then do you want us to go and gather them?

  13. But he said, no, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.

  14. Let both grow until the harvest.

  15. And at the harvest time I will tell the reapers, gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned.

  16. But gather the wheat into my barn.

  17. And now if you look down to verse 36 for the explanation.

  18. Then he left the crowds and went into the house and his disciples came to him saying,

  19. Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.

  20. He answered, the one who sows the good seed is the son of man.

  21. The field is the world and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom.

  22. The weeds are the sons of the evil one and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.

  23. The harvest is the end of the age and the reapers are angels.

  24. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age.

  25. The son of man will send his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin

  26. and all lawbreakers and throw them into the fiery furnace.

  27. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  28. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their father.

  29. He who has ears, let him hear.

  30. May God bless his word.

  31. Do you guys know what smelling salts are?

  32. Smelling salts is this ammonia compound that if someone gets knocked out in an athletic event or someone faints,

  33. someone will kind of break open this little vial and this very sharp fragrance comes out

  34. and it's designed to revive them.

  35. So if you're faint, crack open the smelling salts, they're like, where have I been?

  36. Maybe you've seen it like in a Rocky movie.

  37. A boxer gets knocked around, their day is confused.

  38. The trainer in the corner busts open some smelling salts and they're like, oh, let's go for another round.

  39. They're used today.

  40. In 2005, Michael Strayan, the football player formerly for the Giants,

  41. said that 70 to 80 percent of NFL players would use smelling salts before they went out to play.

  42. They're designed to sharpen, to focus, to revive.

  43. This morning, if you have ears to hear what Jesus is saying, you're going to be jolted by what you just heard.

  44. The parable in which he is spoken is about how this age in which we live now,

  45. it's going to culminate into one great final judgment and Jesus calls it a harvest.

  46. Later on in Matthew 13, he's going to compare it to a great catch of fish.

  47. So this morning, if you've come here as a non-Christian, you don't believe in Jesus,

  48. this should provide some kind of sobriety to you, a bit of a warning, something to take to heart.

  49. Because if Jesus is true, if this is real, and that there is a judgment to come,

  50. and if you're not a Christian, you need to take that to heart.

  51. If you are a Christian, if you've been by God's grace delivered out of the domain of darkness

  52. into the kingdom of the beloved Son, you too should be jolted.

  53. You need to be asking yourself this question.

  54. As a son or daughter of Christ's kingdom, am I living for His kingdom?

  55. Am I giving myself to what matters most?

  56. Here's what's going on in the parables.

  57. These parables, there's this sharp smell of judgment in these parables.

  58. And they're very much designed to alert us and focus us on being a part of the mission of the kingdom.

  59. This parable of the weeds is an elaborate parable that Jesus first spoke to crowds on a beach,

  60. and then He gives the explanation in a house to His disciples.

  61. And so this morning what we're going to do is this.

  62. We're just going to walk through the parable that He spoke on the beach.

  63. He wants to see it a couple things.

  64. And then we're going to move to the explanation.

  65. And it's in the explanation we're going to spend most of our time so we hear what Jesus is saying.

  66. And then we're going to bring it to bear in our own lives.

  67. We're going to be asking the question, okay, am I a wheat or am I a weed and so what?

  68. What difference does this make for us now in 2017?

  69. This parable alerts us that the risen King Jesus is present and actively at work saving people today

  70. and will one day usher in a judgment.

  71. So if you would turn back to Matthew 13, 24 through 30,

  72. let's take a look at this parable.

  73. The parable speaks to the crowds on the beach.

  74. I'm just going to spend a little bit of time here.

  75. Now, as you're looking there, remember what a parable is.

  76. A parable is a teaching tool and it uses comparisons.

  77. And so what Jesus is doing, He's going to take something from everyday experience

  78. and He's going to compare it and use it as a teaching tool of a spiritual reality.

  79. And that's what He's doing here.

  80. Jesus employs parables to hide the kingdom from those with a hard heart

  81. and to reveal the kingdom to those with a humble heart,

  82. a heart in which God has turned the soil over Him.

  83. The other thing I want you to notice is this.

  84. The kingdom of heaven is the subject of this parable.

  85. And so all throughout Matthew 13, all the parables are about the kingdom of heaven.

  86. You see that repeated time and time again.

  87. So here's what this means.

  88. This teaching tool, this parable, is specifically aimed to teach about the kingdom.

  89. So it's going to make comparisons in order to help us understand truths about the kingdom of heaven,

  90. which begs the question, what's the kingdom of heaven?

  91. What is Jesus talking about if He's repeating it so much?

  92. And the simple way to think about it is this.

  93. The kingdom is the active, saving reign of God on earth.

  94. That's the kingdom of heaven.

  95. It's God's rescue mission to the nations of gathering to Himself a new people and a new kingdom.

  96. And so if you look at this parable, Jesus basically says this.

  97. There's this master of the house.

  98. He goes and sows this good seed in his field.

  99. And then while his guys are sleeping, this enemy comes and amidst the good seed,

  100. he sows bad seed of weeds.

  101. And over time, the weeds grow up.

  102. And then his servants who are kind of working the field, they notice.

  103. They notice as these plants grow that there's a difference between the two.

  104. For what you need to understand is that the wheat Jesus is talking about and the weeds Jesus is talking about,

  105. back in the day, they would have been very difficult to differentiate.

  106. And it's only when they come to seed, when the wheat produces grain, is that distinction made.

  107. And so these servants see the difference.

  108. They go to the master.

  109. They say, hey, did you use some lousy seed?

  110. What's going on here?

  111. The master of the house says, no, we've got an enemy.

  112. The servants come back and say, should we go root up all the weeds?

  113. To which the master of the house says, no, don't do that.

  114. Because in the kind of pulling up the weeds, you can also pull up the wheat and we don't want to do that.

  115. So let's let it all grow into the harvest.

  116. And it's at the harvest, I will send out my reapers is what he says.

  117. And those reapers will be instructed to gather the wheat, bind it up and put it into the burn pile,

  118. and then gather the wheat and bring it into the barn.

  119. When you hear this parable, you need to realize that Jesus is comparing something very elaborate here to the kingdom of God.

  120. And what I want to help you see at the get-go is the parable is a parable that's describing a process.

  121. The comparison is being made between the saving reign of God and something being brought to harvest.

  122. There is a passage of time involved.

  123. And so there is both this sowing, this growing, this reaping, this separating, culminating into a future event.

  124. So what I want you to see from the get-go here is we've got a present process that culminates into a future event.

  125. And very basically what Jesus is doing is he's describing the active, saving reign of God as an ongoing work that will culminate in the end of the age.

  126. Let's look at his explanation in verses 36 through 43.

  127. Again, I don't want to assume this, but notice in verse 36 that Jesus leaves the crowds on the beach and he goes into a house.

  128. It's probably the same house that he came out of in 13.1.

  129. And his disciples follow him into the house.

  130. And his disciples then ask him or say to him, explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.

  131. Now, you may be asking yourself, well, I thought that if the word of the kingdom is planted in somebody, it should take root.

  132. Why are these guys asking?

  133. Are they dumb or something like that?

  134. For me, this is very encouraging because the parable is drawing the disciples to Jesus.

  135. They're looking to him to explain it to them.

  136. And so it hasn't pushed them away.

  137. It's drawn them to him.

  138. It's serving its purpose.

  139. But here's what you need to really see.

  140. In this explanation, Jesus goes rapid fire.

  141. He does this rapid fire, point by point explanation of the different elements of the parable.

  142. And he says, this is what it means.

  143. This is what this means.

  144. This is what that means.

  145. And this is what this means.

  146. And believe it or not, there are nine of them.

  147. Let's go.

  148. I want you to see them.

  149. The first is this.

  150. The one who sows the good seed is the son of man.

  151. This parable talked about this master of a house who went out and sowed good seed.

  152. And Jesus is saying, the guy I'm talking about is the son of man.

  153. Now, what you need to realize is that phrase, son of man, it's like a locomotive loaded with messianic freight that is making, building momentum through the gospel of Matthew.

  154. And it's going to culminate with the son of man dying on a cross and being raised from the dead.

  155. That phrase is very important.

  156. Can I have you turn back into the book of Daniel?

  157. Here's how I find the book of Daniel.

  158. I just look for the book of Ezekiel, which is a really big prophet.

  159. And then just go right.

  160. You'll find Daniel.

  161. So look for Ezekiel.

  162. Go right.

  163. You find Daniel.

  164. And if you look at Daniel chapter 7, verses 13 and 14, this is what Jesus is referring to when he calls himself the son of man.

    Daniel 7:13

  165. Listen to this.

  166. This is a vision that Daniel had.

  167. And he says this.

  168. I saw in the night visions.

  169. And behold, with the clouds of heaven, there came one like a son of man.

  170. That's the phrase Jesus is pulling on.

  171. Now, notice what this son of man, what happens.

  172. He came to the ancient of days and was presented before him.

  173. And to him, the son of man was given dominion and glory and a kingdom.

  174. Does that ring a bell?

  175. That all peoples, nations and languages should serve him.

  176. This kingdom is a kingdom that is comprised of all people over the earth.

  177. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away.

  178. Whatever kind of kingdom this is, it's an everlasting one.

  179. And his kingdom, one that shall not be destroyed.

  180. It is unstoppable.

  181. It is unbreakable.

  182. The kingdom is indestructible.

  183. And so, the one who sows is the son of man.

  184. When you hear that, Jesus is making a huge claim.

  185. Because he's talking about himself.

  186. So, this son of man.

  187. Look at verse 37 of Matthew 13.

  188. The one who sows the good seed is the son of man.

  189. And what's interesting about that phrase, the one who sows the good seed, it's actually in the present tense in the original language.

  190. It's the one who is sowing the good seed.

  191. Jesus is saying, what I'm doing now.

  192. I'm sowing the good seed.

  193. I'm raising up for myself sons and daughters of the kingdom.

  194. And then, if you look down at verse 41, you read this.

  195. Well, start in verse 40.

  196. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age.

  197. The son of man will send his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all lawbreakers.

  198. And so, there's this present earthly ministry of Jesus in which he's sowing.

  199. In which he is raising up sons and daughters of the kingdom.

  200. And then, there's this future ministry of the son of man in which he separates the wheat from the weeds.

  201. He is the present sower and the future reaper.

  202. This son of man is the Lord of the harvest.

  203. That's the claim.

  204. That's what Jesus is saying about himself.

  205. So, this one who sows the good seed, this is the son of man.

  206. Now, look at the next one in verse 38.

  207. He describes the field.

  208. The field is the world.

  209. Now, it's important to note where Jesus locates the kingdom of heaven.

  210. He's locating it in the world.

  211. The earth in which we live on.

  212. The earth is the field in which the son of man is actively working which will culminate in a great harvest.

  213. And the work that he's doing is he's calling rebels out of darkness to be sons and daughters of the kingdom.

  214. Why I say that is for this reason.

  215. He's not talking about the church.

  216. Jesus isn't talking here about there is two groups of people in the church.

  217. What he's saying is there's two groups of people on the earth.

  218. And his work is a work among them.

  219. Now, if the world is the field, then what is being grown?

  220. What's being grown are people.

  221. From every tribe, every nation, every tongue.

  222. Goes back to Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  223. All nations.

  224. So this field is the world.

  225. This is a mission with a global scope.

  226. That's why he came.

  227. I'm not sure if you notice this in verse 24.

  228. It's very subtle.

  229. But in verse 74 in the parable, he says,

  230. The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

  231. This world is his world.

  232. It's been attempted to be claimed by the devil, but it's been counterclaimed by Jesus.

  233. And one day he's going to recreate it.

  234. So we've looked at who the sower is.

  235. We've looked at what the field is.

  236. Now let's look at what this good seed is in verse 38.

  237. The good seed is the sons of the kingdom.

  238. Now in the parable of the soils, which we saw a couple weeks ago,

  239. the good seed, the seed was actually the word of the kingdom,

  240. the message of the gospel.

  241. But here, Jesus is saying the good seed represents people,

  242. the sons of the kingdom.

  243. Now you may say, why that?

  244. Well, that's just how parables work.

  245. Jesus can have things represent other things.

  246. But the question is, who are these sons of the kingdom,

  247. these sons and daughters?

  248. Well, these are the men and women, boys and girls,

  249. who've responded in humble faith to the word of the kingdom.

  250. These are followers of Jesus.

  251. These are the ones who are living out the Sermon on the Mount.

  252. These are the ones that are looking to be the blessed ones,

  253. who are seeking to obey Jesus in all that he commanded.

  254. These are the ones that have been radically changed by the Spirit of God,

  255. and now they go from wanting to live for themselves to live for Jesus.

  256. That's the good seed, the sons and daughters of the kingdom.

  257. And then he goes into verse 38.

  258. He says, the weeds are the sons of the evil one.

  259. Just as the good seed represents a particular group of people,

  260. followers of Jesus,

  261. so the weeds depict another group of people,

  262. those who aren't following Jesus.

  263. Jesus says the weeds are the sons of the evil one.

  264. It's a reference to the devil.

  265. Now you may be sitting there saying,

  266. well, man, I hope he wouldn't say that to my friends

  267. who aren't followers of Jesus.

  268. It's not really nice for Jesus to say that someone is a son of the devil,

  269. is it?

  270. Well, let's explore this a little bit.

  271. Let's see what he means by this.

  272. And I think Ephesians 2, 1-3 can help us.

  273. So would you flip to the right of Matthew

  274. and go to Ephesians 2, 1-3?

  275. I'm going to reference it,

  276. so keep your eye on that.

  277. What Jesus is getting at is essentially obedience.

  278. Who you obey.

  279. Who you live for.

  280. Who you follow after.

  281. If the sons of the kingdom obey their father,

  282. sons of the evil one will obey their master.

  283. Look at Ephesians 2.

  284. And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked,

  285. following the course of this world,

  286. following the prince of the power of the air.

  287. That's a reference to Satan, to the devil.

  288. The spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

  289. Another reference to the devil.

  290. When sinners are spiritually dead in their trespasses and sins,

  291. they follow the course of the world.

  292. They follow the prince of the power of the air.

  293. And so essentially what Paul is saying is that

  294. if you're not a follower of Jesus,

  295. you're following after the prince of the power of the air,

  296. not the prince of peace.

  297. Being made alive in Christ,

  298. before you're being made alive in Christ as an unbeliever,

  299. you're actually doing the will of the devil.

  300. Now, that might be totally unbeknownst to those living there

  301. because they're spiritually blind.

  302. Apart from the powerful grace of God poured out in the gospel,

  303. a person who is spiritually dead in the domain of darkness

  304. will be doing the will of the devil.

  305. Now, someone may object.

  306. Someone may say, well, I'm not a Christian,

  307. but I'm not living for the will of the devil.

  308. But here's what you need to understand.

  309. The will of the devil is for you not to bow your knee to Jesus

  310. and live for him.

  311. And so if you're not following Jesus,

  312. you're not doing his will,

  313. that leaves one other person's will you're doing.

  314. The sons of the evil one are those who are living in spiritual darkness.

  315. Now, lest we think that we're something special,

  316. this is from what we were saved from.

  317. We were all dead in our trespasses and sins.

  318. All of us were following the course of the world.

  319. Each one of us was following after the prince of the power of the air.

  320. Unbeknownst to us, we were dead.

  321. And then God, by his grace, broke in.

  322. He turned over the soil of our hearts.

  323. We heard the word of the kingdom.

  324. And he planted in us, by his grace,

  325. sonship, daughtership.

  326. The enemy who sowed them, verse 39, is the devil.

  327. There is a reason why Jesus depicts the devil as an enemy.

  328. It's because the devil is an enemy to Jesus.

  329. And if he is an enemy to Jesus,

  330. he is an enemy of all the sons and daughters of the kingdom.

  331. Now, here's what you need to know about the devil.

  332. He is seeking to undermine the present work

  333. of saving and sanctifying of the risen Christ across the globe.

  334. Spiritual conflict was real in the day of Jesus,

  335. and it's just as real in our day.

  336. Do you remember how Paul closes out the book of Ephesians?

  337. He closes out in Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  338. and he closes out with this sober call to stand firm.

  339. He calls the sons and daughters of the kingdom

  340. to stand firm against the schemes and onslaughts of the devil.

  341. Our battle is not against flesh and blood,

  342. but against spiritual powers.

  343. Do you think that the devil wants people in the city of Kenosha

  344. to repent of their sin and call on Jesus to save them?

  345. No, he does not want that.

  346. He's opposed to that.

  347. Do you think the devil wants the blood bought of Christ

  348. to be reading their Bible so that they can obey Jesus?

  349. Of course he doesn't want that.

  350. Do you think the devil delights when God's people pray

  351. that God would open doors for the gospel

  352. into different neighborhoods and organizations in our city?

  353. The devil doesn't rejoice in that.

  354. He opposes that.

  355. The devil does not want Christians in a church

  356. striving to be at peace with each other.

  357. He wants them striving against each other.

  358. There is an enemy.

  359. But before you start to panic,

  360. remember these words of Martin Luther.

  361. And though this world with devils filled

  362. should threaten to undo us,

  363. we will not fear,

  364. for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.

  365. The prince of darkness grim,

  366. we tremble not for Him.

  367. His rage we can endure,

  368. for lo, His doom is sure.

  369. Remember,

  370. Jesus has overcome the devil temptations in Matthew 4.

  371. Jesus withstood the worst the devil could throw at Him at that time,

  372. and He prevailed,

  373. something that none of us could do.

  374. And then on the cross,

  375. Jesus defeated the devil.

  376. His cross and resurrection,

  377. in the words of Colossians 2,

  378. disarmed the devil.

  379. Here's what that means.

  380. The devil is an accuser.

  381. And so,

  382. when He accuses a person,

  383. He accuses them of their wrongdoings.

  384. You sinner.

  385. Do you remember that?

  386. You remember this?

  387. Guilty, guilty, guilty.

  388. But Jesus' cross disarms Him

  389. because Jesus dealt with our sin.

  390. There's nothing left to accuse.

  391. And then there's more.

  392. The devil uses death as a threat.

  393. We can cower at the thought of death.

  394. We can be afraid of it.

  395. But Jesus' death and resurrection

  396. disarm the threat.

  397. Why?

  398. Because there's something beyond the grave for us.

  399. We have the promise.

  400. Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

  401. If we believe in Him,

  402. though we die,

  403. yet shall we live.

  404. We can take great stock and hope

  405. in our living hope.

  406. Jesus defeated the devil.

  407. Two more things about the devil.

  408. It is written.

  409. It is written in Revelation 20,

    Revelation 20:7

  410. verse 7,

  411. that the devil will be thrown

  412. into the lake of fire forever and ever.

  413. It is written.

  414. It is written.

  415. Lo, His doom is sure.

  416. Though the devil has claimed this world to be his own,

  417. Jesus, the rightful owner of this world,

  418. He created it,

  419. has reclaimed it on the cross.

  420. He calls over it,

  421. Mine!

  422. And His present work of this mission

  423. mission is a reclaiming

  424. and it will culminate

  425. when He comes again

  426. and He will recreate this world

  427. for once it was used to be,

  428. meant to be,

  429. in glory.

  430. The enemy is the devil.

  431. Verse 39,

  432. the harvest

  433. is the end of the age.

  434. The harvest

  435. is the end of the age.

  436. What is a harvest?

  437. A harvest is more than just

  438. the period on a growing seed.

  439. It's more than just

  440. the end.

  441. It's harvest comes

  442. and it's not just,

  443. okay, we stop working now.

  444. A harvest

  445. is a culmination

  446. of a growing season.

  447. The harvest is the time

  448. when a crop has produced its yield

  449. and that yield is gathered together

  450. and stored.

  451. And so when you read those words,

  452. hear them,

  453. end of the age,

  454. you need to understand

  455. there is a greater depth of meaning

  456. to that word end

  457. than what it may appear.

  458. The word actually

  459. is a fuller meaning

  460. of culmination.

  461. Coming together

  462. at the end.

  463. That's why Jesus

  464. describes it as a harvest.

  465. The end of the age

  466. is a harvest.

  467. It's a huge catch of fish.

  468. It's the culmination

  469. of a spiritual

  470. growing season

  471. of the present age.

  472. Did you notice what happens

  473. at the end,

  474. culmination of the age

  475. in verse 40?

  476. Just as the weeds

  477. are gathered

  478. and burned with fire,

  479. so will it be

  480. at the end of the age.

  481. The Son of Man

  482. will send His angels

  483. and they will gather

  484. out of His kingdom

  485. all causes of sin

  486. and all lawbreakers.

  487. There is this ingathering

  488. at the end of the age

  489. of the weeds.

  490. An ingathering

  491. of the sons

  492. of the evil one.

  493. There's an ingathering

  494. of the sons

  495. of the kingdom

  496. and then there is

  497. a separating

  498. out of those

  499. of the kingdom

  500. of those who oppose Him.

  501. We see a similar

  502. separation taking place

  503. later in the book

  504. of Matthew

  505. in Matthew 25.

  506. Jesus once again

  507. speaks of Himself

  508. as the Son of Man

  509. who comes in glory

  510. with His angels.

  511. Speaking of His second coming.

  512. And before Him

  513. all the nations

  514. are gathered

  515. all the people

  516. of His field

  517. and He separates

  518. one from the other

  519. as a shepherd

  520. separates the sheep

  521. from the goats.

  522. It's a picture

  523. of judgment.

  524. The harvest

  525. at the end of the age

  526. is a judgment.

  527. It's a separation

  528. of the evil

  529. from the righteous

  530. and it's Jesus

  531. the Son of Man

  532. who commands it

  533. who brings it about.

  534. So this coming

  535. of the end

  536. of the age

  537. is a culmination

  538. of judgment.

  539. The reapers

  540. in verse 39

  541. are angels.

  542. Angels serve

  543. a particular function

  544. in the final judgment.

  545. They execute

  546. the will

  547. of the Lord

  548. of the harvest.

  549. They carry out

  550. the will of Jesus.

  551. He sends them out

  552. to accomplish His will

  553. and they do it.

  554. Did you notice?

  555. It's His angels

  556. and His kingdom.

  557. This is His harvest.

  558. And in verse 40

  559. again there's this

  560. reference to fire.

  561. Just as the weeds

  562. are gathered

  563. and burned with fire

  564. so it will be

  565. at the end of the age.

  566. Jesus is saying

  567. this picture

  568. of a burned pile

  569. it's the literal

  570. place

  571. of weeping

  572. and gnashing

  573. of teeth

  574. for eternity.

  575. He's talking

  576. about hell.

  577. The place

  578. of eternal torment

  579. for those

  580. who have

  581. disobeyed

  582. God's law.

  583. His law

  584. revealed

  585. specially

  586. in the Bible

  587. and generally

  588. in nature

  589. and in conscience.

  590. This phrase

  591. of where there is

  592. weeping and gnashing

  593. of teeth

  594. it is a horrific picture.

  595. It's a place

  596. of pain

  597. torment

  598. of horror.

  599. It's a place

  600. that you don't

  601. want to be.

  602. and it comes

  603. after the judgment.

  604. You're there

  605. because you should

  606. be there.

  607. And then

  608. there's this

  609. reference

  610. in the parable

  611. to the barn.

  612. He calls it

  613. my barn

  614. in verse 30.

  615. It's the place

  616. where the righteous

  617. shine like the sun

  618. in the kingdom

  619. of their father.

  620. Verse 43.

  621. You notice

  622. the stark

  623. contrast

  624. between

  625. weeping

  626. and gnashing

  627. of teeth

  628. and shining

  629. like the sun?

  630. Shining

  631. like the sun

  632. obviously means

  633. something other

  634. than horrific pain.

  635. It's a place

  636. where there is

  637. beaming

  638. of joy.

  639. High

  640. hearted

  641. delight.

  642. Gratefulness

  643. in the

  644. presence

  645. in the

  646. kingdom

  647. of their

  648. father.

  649. Jesus

  650. wants you

  651. to know

  652. that what

  653. awaits you

  654. son or

  655. daughter

  656. of the

  657. kingdom

  658. is a

  659. place

  660. of great

  661. affection

  662. and love

  663. with your

  664. eternal

  665. father.

  666. No

  667. torment.

  668. No

  669. punishment.

  670. Shining

  671. like the

  672. sun

  673. in the

  674. presence

  675. of your

  676. God.

  677. that's

  678. all nine.

  679. Jesus

  680. is

  681. describing

  682. something

  683. profound.

  684. He's

  685. describing

  686. something

  687. that

  688. spans

  689. time.

  690. The

  691. parable

  692. depicts

  693. the

  694. present

  695. saving

  696. work

  697. of the

  698. son

  699. of

  700. man

  701. culminating

  702. in the

  703. future

  704. separating

  705. work

  706. of the

  707. son

  708. of

  709. man.

  710. Not

  711. only

  712. is

  713. Jesus

  714. the

  715. savior

  716. he's

  717. the

  718. judge.

  719. he's

  720. the

  721. messianic

  722. king

  723. of

  724. all.

  725. This

  726. parable

  727. is

  728. describing

  729. this

  730. season

  731. of

  732. saving

  733. inaugurated

  734. by

  735. Jesus

  736. first

  737. coming

  738. and

  739. it

  740. will

  741. culminate

  742. at

  743. a

  744. second

  745. coming

  746. with

  747. a

  748. day

  749. of

  750. judgment.

  751. It's

  752. a

  753. worldwide

  754. harvest.

  755. The

  756. emphasis

  757. on the

  758. parable

  759. is

  760. the

  761. culmination

  762. in

  763. judgment

  764. that

  765. it's

  766. going

  767. to

  768. happen.

  769. All

  770. the

  771. planting

  772. all

  773. the

  774. waiting

  775. are

  776. moving

  777. towards

  778. the

  779. harvest

  780. the

  781. culmination

  782. of

  783. the

  784. age.

  785. So

  786. we've

  787. looked at

  788. the

  789. parable

  790. we've

  791. walked

  792. through

  793. the

  794. explanation

  795. let's

  796. ask

  797. now

  798. the

  799. question

  800. what

  801. does

  802. this

  803. mean

  804. for

  805. us

  806. today?

  807. Well

  808. it's

  809. a big

  810. claim.

  811. Here's

  812. big

  813. claim

  814. number

  815. one.

  816. God

  817. is

  818. reigning

  819. over

  820. time.

  821. God's

  822. harvest.

  823. God

  824. is

  825. orchestrating

  826. all

  827. events.

  828. God

  829. is

  830. reigning

  831. over

  832. time.

  833. He's

  834. bringing

  835. about

  836. the

  837. harvest.

  838. He

  839. has

  840. purpose

  841. in it

  842. all.

  843. And in

  844. light of

  845. that the

  846. question that

  847. we need

  848. to ask

  849. ourselves

  850. today is

  851. am I

  852. wheat or

  853. am I

  854. wheat?

  855. That's the

  856. question you

  857. need to

  858. ask.

  859. Are you

  860. a son

  861. of the

  862. kingdom?

  863. A daughter

  864. of the

  865. kingdom?

  866. Or are

  867. you a son

  868. of the

  869. evil

  870. one?

  871. A daughter

  872. of the

  873. evil

  874. one?

  875. And the

  876. difference

  877. between the

  878. two is

  879. determined by

  880. what you

  881. think and

  882. believe about

  883. the son

  884. of man.

  885. Not only do

  886. you believe

  887. him but do

  888. you desire to

  889. follow him all

  890. the days of

  891. your life?

  892. Not only do

  893. you think it's

  894. true but you

  895. want him.

  896. You delight

  897. in him.

  898. You love

  899. him.

  900. Now if

  901. you're in

  902. this room

  903. right now

  904. and God

  905. is giving

  906. you eyes

  907. to see

  908. that you're

  909. not in

  910. Christ's

  911. kingdom.

  912. That you're

  913. realizing that

  914. you're not a

  915. son or daughter

  916. of the king.

  917. You need to

  918. understand what's

  919. happening right

  920. now is that

  921. you are being

  922. given an

  923. opportunity by

  924. God himself

  925. to repent

  926. of your sin

  927. and come to

  928. Jesus as

  929. your savior

  930. and judge.

  931. The king

  932. in whom

  933. is life.

  934. today

  935. today

  936. in light of

  937. that day

  938. may this

  939. day be the

  940. day of

  941. salvation for

  942. you.

  943. Don't delay

  944. it.

  945. If you know

  946. it's enough

  947. come to

  948. Jesus on

  949. that.

  950. But if you

  951. are a

  952. Christian

  953. if you

  954. are by

  955. God's

  956. grace

  957. if you've

  958. been delivered

  959. from the

  960. domain of

  961. darkness

  962. transferred

  963. into the

  964. kingdom of

  965. the beloved

  966. son.

  967. Here's what

  968. you need to

  969. know.

  970. You live

  971. for Jesus

  972. now.

  973. You live

  974. for the

  975. kingdom.

  976. You're on

  977. kingdom mission

  978. with the

  979. king.

  980. You're a

  981. son or

  982. daughter of

  983. the king

  984. and you

  985. have been

  986. saved to

  987. be on

  988. mission.

  989. Not only

  990. were you

  991. brought under

  992. the saving

  993. reign of

  994. Jesus to

  995. save you,

  996. you were

  997. brought into

  998. the kingdom

  999. in order to

  1000. advance the

  1001. kingdom.

  1002. Here's what

  1003. you need to

  1004. know about

  1005. the kingdom.

  1006. Have you

  1007. guys ever

  1008. traveled

  1009. internationally?

  1010. When you

  1011. travel internationally

  1012. you go through

  1013. different time

  1014. zones.

  1015. If you're

  1016. starting in

  1017. the central

  1018. time zone

  1019. and you're

  1020. going to

  1021. some time

  1022. zone 12

  1023. hours from

  1024. here, you've

  1025. got to start

  1026. thinking,

  1027. how am I

  1028. going to make

  1029. this adjustment

  1030. from my

  1031. time zone to

  1032. that time

  1033. zone?

  1034. The kingdom

  1035. of heaven has

  1036. two time

  1037. zones.

  1038. It's that

  1039. day and

  1040. this day.

  1041. And so

  1042. we live in

  1043. light of

  1044. that day

  1045. on this

  1046. day.

  1047. We're

  1048. always

  1049. thinking about

  1050. the culmination

  1051. of the age.

  1052. And so

  1053. what that

  1054. means for

  1055. us is that

  1056. when you

  1057. live this

  1058. day in

  1059. light of

  1060. that day,

  1061. it's going

  1062. to change

  1063. your life

  1064. and your

  1065. witness.

  1066. witness,

  1067. here's how

  1068. it changes

  1069. your life.

  1070. When you're

  1071. living on

  1072. kingdom time,

  1073. you're going

  1074. to realize

  1075. you're living

  1076. in close

  1077. proximity to

  1078. those who

  1079. have yet to

  1080. receive Jesus

  1081. or who have

  1082. rejected Him.

  1083. And so

  1084. now, because

  1085. we live in

  1086. close proximity,

  1087. we've got to

  1088. make the most

  1089. of the time

  1090. and live

  1091. distinct lives

  1092. for the

  1093. kingdom.

  1094. Lives that

  1095. contrast

  1096. the lives

  1097. of the sons

  1098. and daughters

  1099. of the evil

  1100. one all

  1101. around us.

  1102. And what

  1103. God will do

  1104. is He'll

  1105. use your

  1106. distinct

  1107. life to

  1108. afford you

  1109. opportunities

  1110. to speak

  1111. of the

  1112. harvest

  1113. king.

  1114. Here's some

  1115. areas to

  1116. consider.

  1117. Areas to

  1118. consider

  1119. standing

  1120. out in.

  1121. First is

  1122. are you

  1123. developing

  1124. kingdom

  1125. tastes?

  1126. Do you

  1127. long for

  1128. what God

  1129. delights in?

  1130. Do you

  1131. use your

  1132. kingdom

  1133. time?

  1134. Are you

  1135. investing your

  1136. time in the

  1137. kingdom?

  1138. Are you

  1139. using your

  1140. talent the

  1141. way that God

  1142. has uniquely

  1143. wired you

  1144. for the

  1145. kingdom?

  1146. Are you

  1147. using your

  1148. treasure for

  1149. the kingdom?

  1150. Are you

  1151. investing what

  1152. God has given

  1153. you to advance

  1154. the glory of

  1155. Christ?

  1156. Take stock of

  1157. your tastes,

  1158. your time,

  1159. your talent,

  1160. your treasure.

  1161. Are they

  1162. distinct from

  1163. the world

  1164. around us?

  1165. When we

  1166. live on the

  1167. time zone

  1168. that day,

  1169. when we

  1170. live in

  1171. light of

  1172. that on

  1173. this day,

  1174. it will

  1175. result in

  1176. having distinct

  1177. lives and

  1178. there is much

  1179. joy there.

  1180. But it's

  1181. not just a

  1182. change of

  1183. life.

  1184. There's a

  1185. change of

  1186. witness of

  1187. what you

  1188. talk about.

  1189. Moms and

  1190. dads,

  1191. you got to

  1192. wash clothes.

  1193. You got to

  1194. prepare meals.

  1195. You got to

  1196. bathe babies.

  1197. You got to

  1198. drive your

  1199. kids around.

  1200. You got to

  1201. teach them

  1202. responsibility.

  1203. You got to

  1204. help them with

  1205. manners.

  1206. But your

  1207. call by the

  1208. living God

  1209. goes beyond

  1210. those things.

  1211. Mom,

  1212. Dad,

  1213. you have been

  1214. purposefully

  1215. placed by the

  1216. Lord of the

  1217. harvest to be

  1218. an ambassador of

  1219. the kingdom to

  1220. each of your

  1221. children.

  1222. God has

  1223. placed you

  1224. there.

  1225. He's given

  1226. you your

  1227. children so

  1228. that you can

  1229. teach them to

  1230. love and fear

  1231. Christ the

  1232. King.

  1233. Students and

  1234. teachers, you

  1235. go back to

  1236. school tomorrow.

  1237. You can go

  1238. back wanting to

  1239. finish strong.

  1240. You can go

  1241. back just wanting

  1242. to get it done.

  1243. But if you're a

  1244. follower of Jesus,

  1245. you go back to

  1246. your school as a

  1247. representative of

  1248. the kingdom.

  1249. God has worked

  1250. for you.

  1251. He wants to

  1252. expand his saving

  1253. reign in your

  1254. school.

  1255. Students, think

  1256. about the kids in

  1257. your gym class.

  1258. Think about the

  1259. kids who sit

  1260. around the table

  1261. with you at

  1262. lunchtime, who

  1263. are in your

  1264. study hall.

  1265. Has it ever

  1266. occurred to you

  1267. to ask, where

  1268. will they be on

  1269. the day of

  1270. judgment?

  1271. Judgment day

  1272. are smelling

  1273. salts for the

  1274. children of God.

  1275. It wakes us

  1276. up and alerts

  1277. us to the

  1278. great realities

  1279. of the kingdom.

  1280. If you're a

  1281. resident of

  1282. Allendale or

  1283. Frank or

  1284. Harbor Park or

  1285. Lincoln Park,

  1286. Forest Park,

  1287. Sunnydale,

  1288. Whitecaps,

  1289. wherever you're

  1290. living at, hey,

1291. you need to be a

  1292. nice neighbor.

  1293. You need to be

  1294. nice.

  1295. You've got to be

  1296. getting along with

  1297. those around you.

  1298. But do you know

  1299. the names of the

  1300. neighbors immediately

  1301. around you?

  1302. Has it ever

  1303. occurred to you to

  1304. ask the question,

  1305. where is this

  1306. person going to be

  1307. on that day?

  1308. Is their heart

  1309. going to drop

  1310. when they see

  1311. the king or is

  1312. it going to rise

  1313. when they see

  1314. the king?

  1315. Can I just give

  1316. you a suggestion?

  1317. We're in April

  1318. now.

  1319. The summer

  1320. affords all sorts

  1321. of opportunities.

  1322. How about this?

  1323. How about have

  1324. some kind of a

  1325. cookout at your

  1326. house or your

  1327. apartment with

  1328. those people living

  1329. around you just

  1330. to get to know

  1331. their names?

  1332. It's going to be

  1333. risky because you

  1334. may start wondering

  1335. where they're going

  1336. to be on that

  1337. day.

  1338. But that's where

  1339. we're to live.

  1340. When we live

  1341. this day in light

  1342. of that day,

  1343. it changes our

  1344. life and witness.

  1345. this morning,

  1346. ask yourself,

  1347. are you a

  1348. wheat or are you

  1349. a weed?

  1350. If you're

  1351. realizing you

  1352. are a son of

  1353. the evil one,

  1354. today,

  1355. in light of that

  1356. day,

  1357. today's the day

  1358. of salvation.

  1359. Come to Jesus.

  1360. That's why He came.

  1361. And if we can

  1362. help you,

  1363. I'll be down here

  1364. after the service.

  1365. I'd be glad to

  1366. pray with you.

  1367. If you're a

  1368. Christian,

  1369. in light of that

  1370. day,

  1371. what is one

  1372. step of faith

  1373. you can take

  1374. this day

  1375. in order to

  1376. more actively

  1377. engage in

  1378. God's global

  1379. work of

  1380. saving sinners?

  1381. The Lord

  1382. Jesus,

  1383. He is the

  1384. Savior and

  1385. Judge.

  1386. He's the

  1387. Lord of the

  1388. Harvest.

  1389. Let's pray.

  1390. Lord Jesus,

  1391. would you

  1392. continue to do

  1393. the work

  1394. that you

  1395. have?

  1396. Lord Jesus,

  1397. would you

  1398. now continue

  1399. to draw

  1400. into work?

  1401. We pray

  1402. your will be

  1403. done.

  1404. God,

  1405. thank you for

  1406. giving ears to

  1407. hear.

  1408. God,

  1409. would you

  1410. make us a

  1411. people who

  1412. are in this

  1413. city,

  1414. light of

  1415. that day.

  1416. In your

  1417. name we

  1418. pray,

  1419. Jesus.

  1420. Amen.

  1421. Amen.
