  1. If you'd open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 13, we're just going to be looking at three verses today.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2. Three verses that have two parables in them.

  3. And they're verses 31 through 33.

  4. And I'm going to read them for you.

  5. This is the Word of God.

  6. These are the very words of Jesus.

  7. He put another parable before them saying,

  8. The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.

  9. It's the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown, it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree.

  10. So that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.

  11. He told them another parable.

  12. The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour till it was all leavened.

  13. I'll never forget 2003.

  14. I was a teenager. Just kidding.

  15. I'm not that old that I can't hear.

  16. Well, 2003, if you remember it, the invasion of Iraq.

  17. And I remember seeing on the news, sortie after sortie of planes and cruise missiles being launched on Baghdad.

  18. And if you're any way familiar with military doctrine and strategy, that attack, that advance was characterized by what's called shock and awe.

  19. Give them everything you've got.

  20. It's also known as overwhelming force.

  21. It's rapid dominance.

  22. It's fast.

  23. It's fierce.

  24. And it is forceful.

  25. And the idea behind it is you give them everything they've got so that they think you're invincible and you just wilt them.

  26. Shock and awe.

  27. There were a group of Jews in Jesus' day who, when they heard about the Messiah coming, they thought they would come.

  28. He would come with shock and awe.

  29. He would establish a new kingdom in Israel with power.

  30. Exercising dominion.

  31. Taken over.

  32. But what we learn from the Gospel of Matthew in the first four chapters is that Jesus is anything but shock and awe.

  33. He was born in a manger in Bethlehem out of Nazareth.

  34. What good comes out of Nazareth?

  35. And then in his inauguration speech, his kingdom manifesto in the Sermon on the Mount, do you remember the first beatitude?

  36. Blessed are the poor in spirit.

  37. How's that for shock and awe?

  38. And then Jesus demonstrates his authority in chapters 8 and 9.

  39. He doesn't show his authority by regime change.

  40. Kicking out the Romans.

  41. Setting up a new economic system.

  42. He exercises authority to deliver people from the power of sin.

  43. To establish a kingdom of gathering people by his grace from darkness into the kingdom of the beloved Son.

  44. He sends out his disciples in chapter 12.

  45. Or excuse me, chapter 12.

  46. That's right.

  47. And then we also see in 11-12 this rising tension.

  48. Actually sent out his disciples in chapter 10.

  49. But in 11 and 12 there's these rising tensions.

  50. John the Baptist even is asking, are you the one, the Messiah?

  51. And then the Pharisees push back on him.

  52. And there's at least four conflicts.

  53. And tensions are on the rise.

  54. Jesus isn't playing according to the rules of the religious establishment.

  55. And they don't like it.

  56. And a point of conflict is this.

  57. He's claiming to be the Son of Man.

  58. That's Messiah language.

  59. But the kingdom that he's talking about is in sharp contrast to the kingdom that many Jews were expecting.

  60. He didn't come in shock and awe the first time.

  61. His was not a shock and awe campaign.

  62. It's more like a sow and grow campaign.

  63. More like a hide and knead through the flower campaign.

  64. In the two parables we're looking at this morning,

  65. he doesn't liken the spread of the kingdom to a military advance.

  66. He likens it to gardening and baking.

  67. Now, he came as a suffering servant.

  68. And when a suffering servant sets up a kingdom,

  69. it's going to be characterized by him.

  70. This morning, I want to ask you this question.

  71. How do you expect the saving reign of God?

  72. The active saving reign?

  73. God's current working to draw sinners to himself.

  74. How do you expect the active reign of God to spread?

  75. To advance?

  76. Are you thinking shock and awe?

  77. Or are you thinking sow and grow?

  78. Jesus definitely clarifies this for us.

  79. Instead of a fast, fierce, enforceful, rapid dominance of the kingdom,

  80. Jesus is an advocate of a slow, gentle, sacrificial, gradual growth of the kingdom.

  81. That's what we see in these two parables.

  82. We're going to look at these two parables this morning.

  83. I'm just going to walk us through each one.

  84. And then we're going to look to what Jesus is actually saying.

  85. I'm going to try to explain what they mean.

  86. And I'm going to bring them to bear in the 21st century for us right now living in the city of Kenosha.

  87. So what I want you to see is that the kingdom of heaven, this active saving grace of God,

  88. of drawing people from every tribe and nation, it's not a shock and awe growth.

  89. It's gradual.

  90. It's pervasive.

  91. And so now let's look at the first parable, the parable of the mustard seed in verses 31 and 32.

  92. Now just to clarify, in just a little while in Matthew, he's going to compare a mustard seed to faith.

  93. But that's not what he's making the comparison in this parable.

  94. In this parable, he's comparing a mustard seed to the people of God,

  95. the new people of God who's been brought into the kingdom by God's grace.

  96. And so in the mustard seed, this parable, Jesus likens the active saving reign of God,

  97. this drawing in by God's grace of people into under his reign.

  98. He compares it to a guy that takes a mustard seed and drops it into the ground in his field.

  99. And so again, it's a comparison of gardening.

  100. And if you want to look quickly at verse 24, the start in verse 31 rings of verse 24.

  101. The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

  102. And then verse 31, the kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.

  103. Very similar.

  104. A lot of sowing going on.

  105. Even the first parable is a parable about sowing, about a seed being hidden in the ground.

  106. In verse 32, Jesus begins to bring out the unique contribution of this particular parable.

  107. He's wanting to emphasize something about the growing saving reign of God.

  108. He starts by saying in verse 32, it's the smallest of all seeds.

  109. He's comparing the start of the kingdom to this mustard seed.

  110. And I'm not sure if you've ever seen any kind of things written about a mustard seed before.

  111. We've actually got a picture of it.

  112. Randy, are you back there?

  113. You want to throw that?

  114. Oh, Andy?

  115. There it is.

  116. That's a mustard seed.

  117. It's about one or two millimeters wide.

  118. It's the size of a pinhead.

  119. And so Jesus is picking that mustard seed for a reason.

  120. He wants you to be thinking it starts really small.

  121. It's tiny.

  122. And so he's likening the start of the kingdom to this little mustard seed dropped into a hole in the field of a guy.

  123. And then in verse 32, it goes on.

  124. We see the word but, which signals some contrast.

  125. But when it has grown, it is bigger than all the garden plants.

  126. Now, when you hear that word garden plant, you're like, well, what is he talking about?

  127. Well, that word garden plant comes from a Greek word that actually means to dig.

  128. And so the idea here is it's a plant that needs to be digging in order to plant it.

  129. And so for us, it would be equivalent of saying like a potted plant that you take home from steins or loaves and you've got to dig a hole and drop it in.

  130. That's the kind of plants he's talking about.

  131. So we're talking about a cultivated field or garden.

  132. And Jesus is saying that this mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds, the size of a pinhead, when it grows, it grows larger than all the garden plants.

  133. It gets big.

  134. It's the smallest of all that grows to be the largest of all.

  135. Emphasis.

  136. Jesus is making a point.

  137. He's helping you get the scale of the growth of this seed.

  138. And he goes on to say that it becomes a tree.

  139. Technically, a mustard seed would grow into a tree that's about 8 to 12 feet.

  140. I think we got a picture of one, Andy.

  141. And this tree, this mustard seed tree is probably about, do we have a picture of that?

  142. There we go.

  143. And that one's about 20 feet.

  144. But what you need to understand is a mustard tree, it's kind of a bushy tree.

  145. And so if it's 8 to 12 feet tall, it's also 8 to 12 feet wide.

  146. It's big.

  147. It's prominent.

  148. And so what Jesus is saying here is he's making a comparison.

  149. He's drawing out scale over time.

  150. He says it starts like a pinhead and results in this plant that's 8 to 12 feet high and 8 to 12 feet wide.

  151. It's extraordinary.

  152. And so the comparison he's making, he's saying the kingdom of heaven is like this little seed that grows over time into this big tree.

  153. And he's comparing it to the saving reign of God.

  154. This is not shock and awe.

  155. This is gardening over time.

  156. This is cultivation.

  157. It's not shock and awe.

  158. It's sow and grow.

  159. And so the emphasis of the parable is on extraordinary growth of the kingdom.

  160. Now let's move to the parable of the leaven.

  161. Oh, and by the way, this kind of parable about the kingdom, for those people who would be expecting messianic shock and awe,

  162. they'd be like, huh, what, huh?

  163. Seriously?

  164. Now let's look at the leaven.

  165. Verse 33, the kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour till it was leavened.

  166. All leavened.

  167. Okay, confession, I am a fan of the great British baking show.

  168. I am.

  169. I watch it.

  170. Last night, Jenny and I watched Paul, this pretty impressive dude.

  171. He made chiabata bread.

  172. And part of making the chiabata bread is he took some leaven, which is this dry additive, and he had someone drop it in.

  173. And then they mixed it up.

  174. And then it grew.

  175. But the leaven that Jesus is talking about is not a dry additive.

  176. The leaven that Jesus is talking about is more like Amish friendship bread.

  177. Has anybody received Amish friendship bread?

  178. We get it.

  179. And basically what somebody does is they hand you a zip block bag with like this gooey stuff in it.

  180. And it like squishes.

  181. And if you look at it, it's kind of doughy, wet, with bubbles forming in it because this dough is already fermenting.

  182. There's already a chemical reaction going on.

  183. And so what you do with Amish friendship bread is you get the bag and then you throw it down and you add stuff to it.

  184. And you mix it all up.

  185. And then you take a little remnant off that and put it in a zip lock bag for the next batch of Amish friendship bread you make.

  186. And then you put that in the oven and you grow it.

  187. It rises and you eat it.

  188. And then you have another bag for the next week.

  189. That's what's happening here.

  190. And so the leaven that's being worked through the dough, it's actually a fermenting remnant of the dough the week before.

  191. And it would have been a small piece.

  192. And so what Jesus is saying here is that the kingdom, this people that God is drawing in by His grace and gospel into His reign,

  193. it starts as this fermenting remnant of dough from last week's bake.

  194. And then what He does is this woman takes that small remnant and she hides it in the dough

  195. and then she works it through three measures of flour till it is all leavened.

  196. Now, when you read three measures of flour, I'm guessing you're like thinking,

  197. oh yeah, three cups, that would be very interesting.

  198. But you've got to understand that word measure for three measures of flour,

  199. that word measure is talking about a Hebrew measuring unit called a seah.

  200. And what that is is the equivalent of eight quarts or two gallons.

  201. And so three seahs of flour equals six gallons of flour.

  202. Twenty-four quarts of flour.

  203. That still doesn't make sense to me.

  204. Because when I hear gallon, I think of gasoline.

  205. I don't think of flour.

  206. But I do get a five-pound bag of flour.

  207. Do you know what I'm talking about?

  208. Those five-pound packages?

  209. You can use them as weights to exercise.

  210. So basically, here's the equivalent.

  211. Here's what Jesus is saying.

  212. These three measures, it's the equivalent of five five-pound bags of flour.

  213. In other words, it's 25 pounds of flour.

  214. Now, I'm not a baker.

  215. I watch baking on TV.

  216. I know that's a lot of flour.

  217. I know that's a lot of kneading through leaven to make the whole thing leavened.

  218. I even know that.

  219. And what Jesus is again doing here is He's showing extraordinary scale.

  220. That this little leaven, this little fragment, this little fermenting dough gets worked through all 25 pounds of flour.

  221. There's another word that you need to see.

  222. Did you catch that?

  223. The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour.

  224. All throughout these parables, there is a hiddenness theme of the kingdom.

  225. It's implied in the dropping of seeds into ground and covering it over.

  226. We see it here.

  227. We will also see it in the hidden treasure next week.

  228. We're going to see in the pearl of great price, which you don't see, discover until you find it.

  229. It's going to show up in the treasure that is unseen but brought out by the master of the house for all to see.

  230. There's a hiddenness theme.

  231. Back to the leaven.

  232. She hid it.

  233. She placed it in it so you couldn't see it.

  234. And she leavened the whole dough until it was all leavened.

  235. Jesus is saying this parable is this story is of this woman who works it all the way through the 25 pounds of flour.

  236. So the parable of the mustard seed is about extraordinary growth.

  237. The parable of the leaven is about extraordinary permeation, pervasiveness.

  238. Similar but different.

  239. So the kingdom of heaven is about extraordinary growth and extraordinary pervasiveness in the world.

  240. Now let's move towards asking what all this stuff means.

  241. Well, both parables have a few things in common.

  242. And that's why Jesus coupled these.

  243. But what you need to know is he doesn't give an explanation for these two.

  244. He gave an explanation for the parable of the soils.

  245. He gave an explanation for the parable of the weeds.

  246. But here he doesn't give an explanation.

  247. And so we need to tread on careful ground here.

  248. We don't want to force a meaning on this.

  249. But there are some significant clues from the context that should give us confidence in making some connections.

  250. And the first connection I want you to see is this.

  251. Did you notice that both in the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the leaven,

  252. that there's one actor, there's one person,

  253. the man who sows the mustard seed and the woman who takes the leaven and works it through?

  254. If you look back at verse 24,

  255. the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

  256. That's the parable of the weeds.

  257. And when Jesus explains it in verse 37, he says,

  258. the one who sows the good seed is the son of man.

  259. It's a big clue.

  260. And then we read in verse 34 and 35,

  261. and this is that part of these eight parables in which Jesus is making sense of it all.

  262. Or Matthew is, he says,

  263. all these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables.

  264. Indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable.

  265. Thus was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet.

  266. I will open my mouth in parables.

  267. I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.

  268. It's a fulfillment of Psalm 78 too.

  269. That's the quote.

  270. And what we're learning here is that Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom in parables

  271. was him throwing out seed.

  272. And those who responded to that, they're the mustard seed.

  273. They're the leaven.

  274. And so what I'm suggesting is that the one sowing the mustard seed,

  275. even the woman working the dough,

  276. it's pointing to the son of man,

  277. the Lord of the harvest,

  278. the baker of the worldwide kingdom.

  279. But it's not just a primary actor we see here.

  280. There's this emphasis on smallness and hiddenness.

  281. That mustard seed is one to two millimeters.

  282. And that remnant of fermenting dough was small.

  283. And so the emphasis is on smallness,

  284. starting small and hidden.

  285. That mustard seed was hidden in the ground.

  286. And that remnant of dough was hidden in the flour, that leaven.

  287. And so there's emphasis on both smallness and hiddenness.

  288. And Jesus is saying the kingdom, the saving reign of God,

  289. as I have inaugurated,

  290. it starts small and hidden.

  291. That's the way of the kingdom.

  292. And not only do we see that,

  293. it's transformational over time.

  294. We have a one to two millimeter seed becoming a tree

  295. that's eight to twelve feet tall and wide.

  296. We have this small fermenting piece of dough

  297. that is worked through 25 pounds of flour.

  298. There's transformation that takes place over time.

  299. So it starts small, it starts hidden,

  300. and it grows and it spreads,

  301. and it becomes something extraordinary.

  302. The smallest of all seeds grows to be the largest of all plants.

  303. It's gloriously prominent.

  304. The littlest of leaven gets through all 25 pounds of flour.

  305. It's pervasive.

  306. And so what Jesus is saying here is that

  307. He is causing His people,

  308. those who are brought into the kingdom

  309. from the very beginning,

  310. which started small and hidden,

  311. He is growing it and working it through the world.

  312. So that it's growing and growing and growing

  313. and it can become like a tree.

  314. And it's spreading and spreading and spreading

  315. all the way through the flour

  316. of every tribe, tongue, and nation.

  317. The parable is not about shock and awe.

  318. These parables are about sowing and growing.

  319. They're about baking.

  320. The active, saving reign of God

  321. starts small and grows big.

  322. This is a correction

  323. for those who are expecting

  324. a shock and awe Messiah.

  325. He's saying, I don't roll that way.

  326. My way is not fast but slow.

  327. My way is not fierce but gentle.

  328. My way is not forceful but sacrificial.

  329. He gave His life as a ransom for many.

  330. It gives us a sense of direction

  331. in our own ministry here,

  332. Christ the King Church.

  333. It informs the way that we do things.

  334. It informs kind of like the time frame we're on.

  335. It informs in terms of our expectations.

  336. It informs too, it's like,

  337. how do we think about our city?

  338. Now to bring this to bear,

  339. historically speaking,

  340. the kingdom started really small.

  341. Jesus, His disciples,

  342. maybe 120 altogether,

  343. in a podunk town around Galilee,

  344. small, concentrated,

  345. and over two millennia,

  346. the kingdom has grown

  347. and grown

  348. and grown.

  349. And so today,

  350. Christianity

  351. has the largest number of adherents worldwide.

  352. Now, we can debate

  353. whether all people claiming to be Christians

  354. are actually Christians.

  355. We can debate that.

  356. But I just want to point to the fact that

  357. this parable is somehow prophetic.

  358. In 2012, there was 2.2 billion people

  359. on the planet

  360. that claimed to be a follower of Jesus.

  361. Now that's extraordinary growth

  362. over two millennia.

  363. From 120 to 2.2 billion,

  364. Jesus knew what He was talking about.

  365. And what that points to is,

  366. He's right on time.

  367. He's bringing about His purposes

  368. as He said He would.

  369. He's grown the kingdom

  370. just like He said He would.

  371. And what this means for us is this.

  372. We live at a specific time

  373. of His global harvest.

  374. We're not on our time.

  375. We're on His time.

  376. Now, if you're here

  377. and you're realizing

  378. that you're not in the kingdom,

  379. that you haven't bowed your knee

  380. to King Jesus

  381. and by grace received the salvation

  382. He alone offers,

  383. today is the day of salvation.

  384. The time for you is to repent

  385. and believe

  386. and come join us

  387. in the kingdom of heaven.

  388. But let's say you're a follower of Jesus

  389. and you're realizing,

  390. you know what?

  391. I'm not living on His time.

  392. I'm living on my time.

  393. The call to you is

  394. move on to His time.

  395. Be thinking about harvest.

  396. Be thinking about spread

  397. in the city.

  398. Leaven.

  399. Here's what will happen.

  400. It will change your priorities.

  401. You'll see people differently.

  402. You'll want to use your money

  403. in different ways.

  404. You'll want to spend your time

  405. in ways that are advancing kingdom

  406. according to the King.

  407. Now, there are some of you in here

  408. that have been laboring hard.

  409. You've been sharing your faith.

  410. You've been knocking on doors.

  411. You've been initiating with people.

  412. You've been putting out

  413. a lot of effort

  414. out of a wonderful desire

  415. to see people come to Christ,

  416. to see people brought into our church,

  417. and you may be thinking,

  418. you know what?

  419. We're three and a half years old

  420. as a church.

  421. I thought we would have

  422. 700 converts by this time.

  423. What's going on?

  424. Why isn't this thing happening?

  425. Why aren't we this

  426. mixed ethnically church

  427. that we're so wanting to be?

  428. Why isn't this happening?

  429. Well, the answer is

  430. Jesus is right on time.

  431. He's expanding His kingdom.

  432. Ministry's slow.

  433. People changing is hard.

  434. It takes time.

  435. Just over the last couple weeks,

  436. I've talked to two people

  437. who've become Christians

  438. in the last year,

  439. but it was a longer process.

  440. It takes time.

  441. And so the question is,

  442. are we on His time?

  443. Are we trusting Him?

  444. Now, we pray for outpourings

  445. of the Spirit

  446. in phenomenal works,

  447. but His typical MO

  448. is slow, gentle,

  449. and sacrificial.

  450. But we're on His time.

  451. Now, that should ring a bell

  452. in you as well.

  453. If the kingdom is spreading

  454. like I'm suggesting it is,

  455. we're in a different place now

  456. than when we were

  457. 2,000 years ago,

  458. do you know what that means?

  459. We're getting closer

  460. to His return.

  461. He's coming back.

  462. We're one day closer.

  463. Not one day farther.

  464. He's coming back.

  465. Now, presently speaking,

  466. all throughout the globe,

  467. God is at work.

  468. His active,

  469. His active,

  470. saving reign

  471. is reaching

  472. into different people groups

  473. all along the planet.

  474. Now, if you're taking notes,

  475. I want you to jot down this.

  476. The Joshua Project.

  477. When you get home today

  478. or early this week,

  479. Google

  480. the Joshua Project.

  481. What the Joshua Project does

  482. is it tracks

  483. the progress

  484. of world evangelization.

  485. And it tracks it

  486. along two lines.

  487. Just the number

  488. of people

  489. who've been reached

  490. with the gospel

  491. as well as

  492. the number of people groups

  493. that have been reached

  494. with the gospel.

  495. And a people group

  496. is a distinct group

  497. of people

  498. by language,

  499. ethnicity,

  500. and culture.

  501. But,

  502. here's what you need

  503. to know.

  504. According to

  505. the Joshua Project,

  506. 42% of the world's

  507. population,

  508. which is 3.11

  509. billion people,

  510. have not been reached

  511. with the gospel.

  512. And so,

  513. is the kingdom spreading?

  514. Yes.

  515. Has everybody been reached?

  516. No.

  517. The Joshua Project

  518. says that there are

  519. 16,584 different

  520. people groups

  521. around the planet.

  522. Distinct people groups.

  523. And it says that

  524. 6,733 are presently

  525. unreached.

  526. And what they mean

  527. by unreached

  528. is that

  529. an unreached people group

  530. is dependent

  531. on someone

  532. from outside

  533. of their group

  534. to come in

  535. and share the gospel

  536. of Jesus Christ

  537. with them.

  538. And so,

  539. presently,

  540. there's 40%

  541. of the world's

  542. people groups

  543. that don't have

  544. a witness to them.

  545. They're waiting

  546. for someone to come

  547. and tell them

  548. about the saving reign

  549. of Jesus Christ,

  550. about the grace

  551. of the Almighty God

  552. who offers them

  553. their sinners

  554. in need of salvation.

  555. You know,

  556. America

  557. is actually listed

  558. on the Joshua Project

  559. as having its own

  560. unreached people groups.

  561. And it's very interesting.

  562. The unreached people groups

  563. in America,

  564. Native Americans,

  565. immigrants,

  566. and when you look

  567. at it on the map,

  568. the hot spots

  569. are in big cities

  570. in our nation.

  571. This is why

  572. we have missionaries.

  573. And this is why,

  574. one of the big reasons

  575. why we have mission partners

  576. as a church.

  577. This is why

  578. we want to get

  579. alongside of

  580. Josh and Christy Anderson

  581. and the work

  582. that they're doing

  583. in Asia.

  584. We partner with them

  585. so that they can

  586. bring the gospel

  587. to an unreached

  588. people group.

  589. That's why we saddle up

  590. next to and partner

  591. with Chelsea Zeman

  592. so that she can

  593. go to Nicaragua

  594. and share the gospel

  595. with people

  596. who presently

  597. don't know about Jesus.

  598. And that's why

  599. we partner up

  600. with Kyle Zeman

  601. who's working

  602. at Bradley University

  603. in Illinois.

  604. You might,

  605. Bradley University,

  606. that's in America.

  607. Well, it's like

  608. a foreign land

  609. to us now.

  610. There's something else

  611. I want to make you aware of.

  612. In some countries

  613. around the world,

  614. the kingdom of heaven

  615. is presently small

  616. and hidden

  617. because of persecution

  618. and suffering.

  619. Recently,

  620. we received as a family,

  621. we get Christianity Today

  622. and part of the latest

  623. Christianity Today

  624. was this magazine

  625. by Open Doors.

  626. And this,

  627. Open Doors

  628. is an organization

  629. that tracks the persecution

  630. of the church

  631. around the world.

  632. And it shared

  633. the top 50 countries

  634. that are persecuting

  635. Christians around the world.

  636. Do you know

  637. what the number one

  638. country was?

  639. North Korea.

  640. And so,

  641. in this country

  642. of North Korea,

  643. there are 24,

  644. 25.4 million people.

  645. 300,000 are Christians.

  646. That's 1% of the population.

  647. Now, when you hear me say

  648. North Korea,

  649. you might instantly go,

  650. well, third missile test.

  651. Are they going to get

  652. a missile,

  653. intercontinental ballistic missile

  654. to bring a warhead

  655. to the United States?

  656. Tension's rising.

  657. China's involved.

  658. South Korea,

  659. Japan,

  660. the United States.

  661. Saber rattling going on.

  662. But the reality is,

  663. there are worshipers

  664. in North Korea

  665. that don't have

  666. a gospel witness.

  667. And there's 1%

  668. of the population

  669. that God has placed there

  670. and He is going to

  671. leaven that 100,000 through.

  672. And it's going to start

  673. with them showing up

  674. in prisons

  675. and sharing with people

  676. gospel in prisons

  677. and in outhouses.

  678. and the gospel's

  679. going to spread.

  680. God's doing a global work.

  681. He's advancing the gospel,

  682. the saving reign of God

  683. all over the place.

  684. It's an active work.

  685. Locally.

  686. What about our city?

  687. What about this little section

  688. of God's field

  689. we call Kenosha?

  690. This little segment

  691. of the flower?

  692. Well, for those of us

  693. who have been,

  694. by God's grace,

  695. brought into the kingdom,

  696. we're leaven

  697. to the city.

  698. We're leaven.

  699. You know,

  700. leaven has this

  701. dynamic additive.

  702. You put leaven

  703. into flour

  704. and what happens is

  705. it brings with it

  706. a chemical reaction

  707. that brings about

  708. a change.

  709. It gives rise

  710. to the dome.

  711. My friends,

  712. we're God's leaven.

  713. We have been placed

  714. in this city

  715. and we're being

  716. needed through.

  717. It's no coincidence.

  718. You're in the neighborhood

  719. you're in.

  720. You're in the school

  721. you are.

  722. You're in the organizations

  723. you're involved with.

  724. The businesses.

  725. It's all part of God's plan

  726. to expand His kingdom.

  727. Wherever you are,

  728. the Lord wants to use you.

  729. He wants to use you

  730. as leaven.

  731. Leaven.

  732. It's not shock and awe.

  733. It's slow.

  734. It's gentle.

  735. It's sacrificial.

  736. The dynamic that we bring

  737. with us into our neighborhoods,

  738. it's not of us.

  739. We bring in the gospel dynamic.

  740. It's God's divine change agent.

  741. And when we share the gospel

  742. with people,

  743. this catalyst,

  744. what happens is

  745. God raises

  746. dead people

  747. to life.

  748. There are a whole lot

  749. of dead people

  750. in this city.

  751. Spiritually dead.

  752. And God has spread us

  753. like a leaven

  754. and located us

  755. very specifically.

  756. It's about proximity,

  757. it's about time,

  758. and it's about a dynamic.

  759. And we got the dynamic.

  760. It's the gospel.

  761. We get to tell people

  762. about it.

  763. This morning,

  764. I want to ask,

  765. how do you expect

  766. the kingdom of heaven,

  767. the saving reign of Jesus,

  768. to advance

  769. around the world

  770. or in our city?

  771. Is it shock and awe?

  772. No, it's not shock and awe.

  773. It's slow.

  774. It's gentle.

  775. It's sacrificial.

  776. It's so ingrowed.

  777. Let me urge you

  778. to do a couple things.

  779. Start prayer walking.

  780. It's getting nice out.

  781. Walk around your neighborhood.

  782. Start praying for people.

  783. Start praying for your neighbors.

  784. God will use it for good

  785. to help you see as he sees.

  786. Last week,

  787. the leadership team,

  788. we broke into twos

  789. and we drove around

  790. the city of Kenosha

  791. for two hours.

  792. And we drove around saying,

  793. who are the people

  794. that God has brought

  795. to this city?

  796. And what does God

  797. want to do in this city?

  798. Go out on a date.

  799. Drive around town.

  800. See the neighborhoods

  801. and the people

  802. waiting.

  803. The kingdom of heaven

  804. is not shock and awe.

  805. It's not fast.

  806. It's slow.

  807. It's not fierce.

  808. It's gentle.

  809. It's not forceful.

  810. It's sacrificial.

  811. Our king is the suffering servant.

  812. And he's right on time.

  813. Let's get on his time.

  814. Will you pray with me?

  815. Amen.

  816. Amen.

  817. Lord Jesus,

  818. you are the Lord of the harvest.

  819. We thank you for these parables

  820. and we thank you

  821. for what you've been doing

  822. over the course

  823. of the last two millennia.

  824. You are the risen Christ

  825. who's sovereign over all.

  826. You're wanting to gather

  827. for yourself a people

  828. from every tribe,

  829. tongue, and nation.

  830. We pray, Father,

  831. for your gospel to advance.

  832. We pray for our brothers

  833. and sisters in North Korea

  834. who presently suffer,

  835. suffer harshly.

  836. Would you give them strength?

  837. Would you work them through

  838. like leaven that country?

  839. God, would you bring change?

  840. Would you turn that country

  841. around from the inside out?

  842. God, we pray for our city.

  843. We ask that, God,

  844. there would be an outpouring

  845. of your spirit

  846. that would give us

  847. the boldness

  848. and the confidence

  849. and the perseverance

  850. to faithfully proclaim

  851. of what Christ has done

  852. for sinners.

  853. That, God,

  854. would you help us

  855. to see where we've been located

  856. not as coincidence,

  857. but providence.

  858. And that we would be a people

  859. that are making the most

  860. of the time,

  861. your time.

  862. Lord, we thank you so much

  863. for calling us as a church

  864. to be light in a dark place,

  865. to be salt in a decaying world,

  866. and to be leaven

  867. in this big lump of dough

  868. called Kenosha.

  869. God, we would ask

  870. that you would bring

  871. men and women,

  872. boys and girls,

  873. into our church

  874. who are just fresh

  875. in terms of coming to Christ.

  876. Would you give us

  877. the privilege of sharing

  878. the gospel with many

  879. and seeing many respond?

  880. Would you build your kingdom,

  881. Lord, we ask?

  882. Thank you for your word,

  883. Lord Jesus,

  884. and it's your name we pray.

  885. Amen.
