  1. Pray with me.

  2. Come, fountain of every blessing.

  3. Every blessing.

  4. Oh, our King, you are King of glory,

  5. who can stand before you,

  6. and yet you shower your grace upon people like us, rebels,

  7. and you have won us by your grace.

  8. So come now and cause your grace to fall on us

  9. in the form of your word, spoken words of life.

  10. Father, would you speak life now through what you have said,

  11. through your son's lips.

  12. In his name we pray.

  13. Amen.

  14. You may be seated.

  15. Worship team, thank you guys so much.

  16. So grateful for you leading us in worship.

  17. We're going to be in Matthew chapter 13 this morning.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  18. So you open your Bibles there.

  19. If you don't have one, look in the back of the pew in front of you.

  20. There should be one there.

  21. Children didn't need any reminding, so they're on their way.

  22. They're eager to go.

  23. They know the routine.

  24. Well, speaking of children, when I was a kid,

  25. my mom worked as our church's secretary for a number of years.

  26. How many years, mom?

  27. Five?

  28. There you go.

  29. And these were like the prime years of childhood right here,

  30. the exploration phase.

  31. And my brother and I had all kinds of fun exploring the church building,

  32. getting into a lot of trouble,

  33. and exploring the property around the church building as well.

  34. And one day, it was a hot summer day,

  35. we were exploring a little drainage ditch behind the back of the church

  36. in the back parking lot,

  37. and to our great excitement,

  38. we saw little glints of gold shining up at us.

  39. And in the hot Missouri sun,

  40. we dug feverishly,

  41. and we thought we had struck it rich.

  42. We thought, that's it.

  43. We're good to go.

  44. College is paid for.

  45. We probably didn't have that on our mind.

  46. I don't know how much of this stuff we dug up,

  47. but we worked hard.

  48. We were modern-day gold rushers.

  49. We found stuff to sift it out,

  50. and oh, man, we were so excited.

  51. But the bummer of it all is that we brought it to our mom

  52. and found out that it was fool's gold.

  53. Iron pyrite.

  54. Not the real deal.

  55. And if all that iron pyrite we had dug up was real gold,

  56. man, that would have been really amazing.

  57. Well, in Matthew 13, starting in verse 44,

  58. Jesus wants us to get our attention on treasure.

  59. So let's read these two parables together.

  60. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field,

  61. which a man found and covered up.

  62. Then, in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has,

  63. and buys that field.

  64. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant

  65. in search of fine pearls,

  66. who, on finding one pearl of great value,

  67. went and sold all that he had,

  68. and he bought it.

  69. So here in Matthew 13,

  70. we've been peering into what Jesus is revealing about the kingdom of heaven,

  71. God's kingdom.

  72. How the kingdom is received,

  73. how the kingdom grows,

  74. how we need to respond to that kingdom.

  75. But now,

  76. Jesus is going to shift gears for a minute,

  77. and he's going to paint two masterful pictures

  78. depicting not how you enter the kingdom,

  79. or how you receive the kingdom,

  80. or how the kingdom grows,

  81. but rather,

  82. the kingdom's unequaled value.

  83. The kingdom's desirability.

  84. In fact, the kingdom is so valuable,

  85. so desirable,

  86. that it is worth obtaining at any cost.

  87. You should walk away from these parables this morning thinking,

  88. there is nothing I wouldn't give up to get this kingdom.

  89. God's kingdom is worth obtaining at any cost,

  90. because it is of unequaled value.

  91. Because the kingdom is of unequaled value,

  92. it's worth obtaining at any cost.

  93. That's the big idea.

  94. So I've got three things for us to do this morning

  95. to get that big idea sunk into us.

  96. First, we're going to examine.

  97. Second, we're going to gaze.

  98. And third, open.

  99. Examine, gaze, open.

  100. Ego.

  101. That was accidental.

  102. I'm not trying to say anything.

  103. Ego.

  104. So examine, gaze, open.

  105. Let's start first by examining these parables.

  106. We're going to do it one at a time.

  107. But before we dive right in,

  108. I want to remind us of what Pastor Mike has been pointing out

  109. the past several weeks in chapter 13.

  110. That Jesus is using parables,

  111. these little real life,

  112. easy to relate to word pictures,

  113. to compare God's kingdom to something in real life.

  114. And when he does this, though,

  115. the parables have two functions.

  116. First, they reveal the kingdom

  117. to those who have ears to hear.

  118. They help us grasp the kingdom more fully

  119. if we have humble ears to listen.

  120. But at the same time,

  121. it also hides the kingdom even further

  122. for those who do not have ears to hear.

  123. There is a revealing,

  124. but there's also a hiding.

  125. And so what I want us to humbly do now

  126. is say,

  127. God, I need you to reveal the kingdom.

  128. We need humble hearts.

  129. Not proud, I've got this figured out hearts,

  130. but humble hearts to say,

  131. God, show me your kingdom.

  132. Help me to see that in this parable.

  133. So let's make sure our hearts

  134. are positioned well

  135. to respond with faith to these parables.

  136. So with that in mind,

  137. let's look at verse 44,

  138. and I want us to look at the parable

  139. of the hidden treasure.

  140. Let's examine this parable.

  141. The kingdom of heaven

  142. is like treasure hidden in a field,

  143. which a man found and covered up.

  144. And in his joy,

  145. he goes and sells all that he has

  146. and buys the field.

  147. Pretty straightforward, right?

  148. Jesus can accomplish a lot

  149. in just like a sentence.

  150. A guy is in a field,

  151. finds buried treasure,

  152. keeps it hidden,

  153. goes out with joy

  154. to sell everything he has

  155. to buy the field

  156. so he can keep the treasure.

  157. We've examined the parable.

  158. Done.

  159. Just kidding.

  160. Now if you'll pardon my pun,

  161. I want us to dig into this parable

  162. a little bit

  163. to notice a few details.

  164. My wife's probably

  165. rolling her eyes right now.

  166. First of all,

  167. I want us to look and see

  168. how rare and surprising

  169. a discovery like this

  170. was.

  171. One did not stumble

  172. across buried treasure

  173. in the land of Israel

  174. every day.

  175. It's probably as common

  176. as winning the lottery today.

  177. And apparently,

  178. you're more likely

  179. to be struck by lightning,

  180. killed in a plane crash,

  181. and become a movie star,

  182. probably all three at once,

  183. than winning the lottery.

  184. So this is probably

  185. not that likely.

  186. But it wasn't unheard of,

  187. either.

  188. Jesus' audience,

  189. his disciples,

  190. that's who he's talking to

  191. right now,

  192. they have probably heard

  193. of a few rare tales

  194. of a farmer plowing his field

  195. somewhere in Galilee

  196. and turning up

  197. some buried treasure.

  198. After all,

  199. Palestine,

  200. the land of Israel,

  201. for hundreds of years

  202. had been subject

  203. to invading armies

  204. coming in and out.

  205. And when an invading army

  206. is coming,

  207. what else are you going to do

  208. with your family heirlooms

  209. and your life savings

  210. but hide it away?

  211. You're going to find

  212. some kind of hardy container,

  213. hastily bury it

  214. in the ground somewhere

  215. so the marauding hordes

  216. don't get it.

  217. And then,

  218. if you're lucky enough

  219. to come back,

  220. you can dig it up

  221. and you still have

  222. what you had.

  223. But the chances

  224. of this guy

  225. finding something like this

  226. are so close to nil

  227. that this is very rare.

  228. This is very exciting,

  229. very surprising.

  230. This is his lucky day.

  231. So a likely scenario

  232. that Jesus probably had in mind

  233. went something like this.

  234. This fortunate man

  235. was probably a laborer

  236. of some sort

  237. working in his boss's field,

  238. the guy who owned the field.

  239. And while he's working,

  240. whether he's digging

  241. an iridation ditch

  242. or plowing a field,

  243. his tool strikes something

  244. in the ground

  245. that's not dirt,

  246. it's not rock,

  247. it goes thud

  248. or clank or something.

  249. And he uncovers it,

  250. he can tell that it's

  251. extremely valuable

  252. but he doesn't lift it out

  253. and then he covers it back up.

  254. Why?

  255. Why wouldn't he just lift it out

  256. and say,

  257. woohoo?

  258. Well, it wasn't his field.

  259. Technically,

  260. it was his boss's field,

  261. most likely.

  262. The law of the rabbis

  263. at this time

  264. did say that

  265. finders keepers,

  266. basically.

  267. If you find

  268. hidden treasure in the field,

  269. it's yours.

  270. No matter who owns the field.

  271. But,

  272. if the laborer

  273. lifts it out,

  274. the owner could

  275. potentially claim

  276. that he had sent

  277. the laborer

  278. to go dig the treasure out

  279. and therefore say

  280. that it's the owner's treasure,

  281. not the laborer's.

  282. And so,

  283. the only surefire way

  284. to get the treasure

  285. was to obtain the field.

  286. So,

  287. what does this guy do?

  288. He went,

  289. he sold all that he had,

  290. and he bought the field.

  291. He liquidated his assets

  292. and exchanged

  293. his entire material life

  294. for that field

  295. and for what it contained.

  296. Just for a moment,

  297. let me take you

  298. on a little mental exercise.

  299. I want you to imagine

  300. all of your assets.

  301. Start with your possessions.

  302. Just get this in your mind.

  303. From your toothbrush

  304. to your bed,

  305. your home decorations,

  306. your baseball cards

  307. in the attic,

  308. your grandmother's china,

  309. your favorite coffee mug,

  310. the contents of your safe

  311. or your safe deposit box,

  312. your car,

  313. your house,

  314. your books on your bookshelf,

  315. that's a hard one for me,

  316. your phone,

  317. your tools,

  318. everything you've got.

  319. Everything except

  320. the shirt on your back.

  321. Okay,

  322. so you've got

  323. all your possessions.

  324. Now,

  325. add to that

  326. every cent you own.

  327. In your checking account,

  328. in your savings account,

  329. in your retirement,

  330. all that you've got

  331. from the cash in your wallet

  332. to your spare change,

  333. all that you've got.

  334. Now,

  335. imagine taking all of that

  336. and exchanging it

  337. for one thing.

  338. But notice,

  339. it was not because

  340. he felt like he should.

  341. It was not out of obligation.

  342. Did you notice

  343. that little phrase?

  344. In his joy,

  345. he goes

  346. and sells all that he has

  347. and buys the field.

  348. So this is what this guy did.

  349. In a fraction of a second,

  350. this guy's looking at the treasure.

  351. In a fraction of a second,

  352. he mentally takes

  353. all that he's got,

  354. all of his possessions,

  355. all of his life savings,

  356. everything he's got,

  357. and he puts it on one end

  358. of a scale

  359. and he puts the treasure

  360. he had just found

  361. on the other end.

  362. And when he sees the treasure

  363. break the scale

  364. with its immeasurable value

  365. and tosses meager assets

  366. up into the air

  367. like feathers,

  368. he drops his shovel,

  369. he runs to his house,

  370. he shouts to his wife

  371. that he's going to sell

  372. everything to go buy that field.

  373. He tells his kids

  374. he's made the most joyful

  375. discovery he's ever made

  376. and he bought the field

  377. without a second thought.

  378. There was no deliberation,

  379. no foot dragging.

  380. He didn't stop to ponder

  381. the cost-benefit analysis.

  382. He was exchanging pennies

  383. for millions.

  384. Who would need to stop

  385. and think about that?

  386. This was an easy decision.

  387. So what does this parable tell us?

  388. It tells us that the kingdom

  389. is the most joyful discovery

  390. you will ever make.

  391. And once you find it,

  392. once you realize what you found,

  393. it'll be a joy to give up

  394. whatever you gotta give up

  395. to get it.

  396. And this is very similar

  397. to what the next parable tells us,

  398. only with a slightly different emphasis.

  399. Verse 45,

  400. Jesus gets a slightly different image

  401. in our heads.

  402. We have a merchant now

  403. on hunt for fine pearls.

  404. Now, in the ancient world,

  405. pearls were extremely rare,

  406. especially fine ones.

  407. We didn't have the capacity back then

  408. to make synthetic pearls

  409. as we do now,

  410. artificial pearls.

  411. And so they were on par with gold

  412. in terms of value.

  413. And unlike the chap

  414. in the previous parable,

  415. this merchant's already wealthy.

  416. If he's able to be hunting down

  417. the finest pearls on the market,

  418. he's got the means

  419. to be able to do that.

  420. And he obviously knows his stuff.

  421. He has an eye

  422. for what he's looking for.

  423. He knows a fine pearl

  424. when he sees one.

  425. I would not be able

  426. to tell you anything,

  427. but this guy has an eye

  428. for quality,

  429. for beauty,

  430. and for value.

  431. His livelihood depended on it.

  432. And one day,

  433. he found it.

  434. He found the pearl.

  435. In verse 45,

  436. notice that he's on the search

  437. of fine pearls, plural,

  438. and then he finds the one.

  439. The one pearl of great value.

  440. As one commentator puts it,

  441. this is the one pearl

  442. that once you have it,

  443. you don't need anymore.

  444. It was the pearl

  445. he didn't expect to find.

  446. It was find beyond his imagination.

  447. And this merchant

  448. does the same thing

  449. as the man in the previous parable.

  450. He takes decisive action.

  451. He goes,

  452. sells everything he's got,

  453. and he buys the pearl.

  454. But unlike the man

  455. with the treasure,

  456. this man couldn't live

  457. off the pearl.

  458. It wasn't for the kind of bank

  459. that he's going to make.

  460. It's just to have the pearl.

  461. Just to possess something

  462. of such fine, fine beauty.

  463. Not to profit off of it,

  464. but to possess it,

  465. to have it.

  466. And by the way,

  467. Jesus isn't telling us

  468. these pearls

  469. for them to walk on all fours.

  470. We're not meant to critique

  471. the ethics of the man

  472. who found the treasure,

  473. whether he should have told

  474. the owner of the field or not,

  475. or we're not supposed to critique

  476. the wisdom of the merchant selling.

  477. Everybody's got that

  478. for a little pearl.

  479. The point of these parables

  480. is to illustrate

  481. how immeasurably valuable

  482. the kingdom is.

  483. And the price paid

  484. to get the kingdom

  485. is unquestionably

  486. and joyfully worth it.

  487. So we've examined the parables.

  488. The kingdom is the most joyful discovery

  489. you'll ever make.

  490. It's the most valuable object

  491. you could ever seek.

  492. Once you find it,

  493. there's nothing you can compare it to.

  494. And exchanging it

  495. for all that you have

  496. is unquestionably worth it.

  497. It's pennies for millions.

  498. It's a no-brainer.

  499. But you might be sitting there

  500. and wondering,

  501. okay, Billy,

  502. I get that Jesus is saying

  503. the kingdom is immeasurably valuable.

  504. I see it's worth exchanging

  505. all I have to get it.

  506. But can I have a little explanation

  507. on what it is?

  508. What is the kingdom?

  509. Why is it so valuable?

  510. Can you maybe open up

  511. that treasure box a little bit

  512. and let me just see it

  513. so I can know?

  514. And maybe run my fingers through it.

  515. Can I hold the pearl,

  516. feel it on my fingertips a little bit

  517. so I can know

  518. that it's worth selling

  519. everything I've got to get it?

  520. Yes.

  521. We can do that.

  522. Let's gaze at this kingdom.

  523. Let's gaze at this treasure.

  524. So we're going to do

  525. a little gaze at a glimpse.

  526. Kind of just open the treasure box

  527. and let you see

  528. kind of the whole thing

  529. for a minute

  530. and I just want to pick up

  531. one little gem

  532. that's right here in the passage

  533. and I want us to gaze at that.

  534. So let's just kind of start

  535. from a glimpse.

  536. What is this kingdom

  537. we're talking about?

  538. Well, as Mike has said

  539. in previous sermons,

  540. this is the kingdom.

  541. It's God's saving reign.

  542. It's coming under God's rule.

  543. It's God's redeeming activity

  544. in the world.

  545. Wherever there are people

  546. who recognize God

  547. as their king,

  548. that's where the kingdom is.

  549. And this has been

  550. the story

  551. of all of the Old Testament.

  552. From the garden,

  553. God's people

  554. in God's place

  555. living under his rule

  556. and then it's broken

  557. because we refuse

  558. to acknowledge God

  559. as our king.

  560. We refuse to see

  561. how great and valuable he is.

  562. It's broken.

  563. That kingdom is shattered

  564. and then God reestablishes it

  565. by his grace

  566. by choosing one people

  567. and establishing his rule

  568. over that one people, Israel,

  569. and setting up his king,

  570. King David,

  571. over that kingdom

  572. and then even that kingdom

  573. falls apart

  574. because God's people

  575. still reject his rule

  576. and his reign.

  577. But then this guy named Jesus

  578. shows up on the scene

  579. and he says,

  580. the kingdom of heaven

  581. is here.

  582. It's here now.

  583. all of a sudden

  584. we're beginning to see

  585. that the kingdom of God

  586. is God's reign

  587. over not only all creation

  588. but particularly his people

  589. and the good that he's doing

  590. over his people

  591. with his rule

  592. over his people.

  593. So that's the treasure box.

  594. If you're looking at the treasure

  595. just all as a whole,

  596. that's the treasure box.

  597. There's so many blessings

  598. we can pull out of it.

  599. We're under his good

  600. and perfect law.

  601. We're experiencing his presence.

  602. We're able to receive

  603. his mercy and forgiveness.

  604. We're able to escape

  605. from judgment.

  606. We have eternal life

  607. when we're near him

  608. and under his rule.

  609. There's so many good blessings,

  610. little pieces of gold

  611. we can pick up

  612. and run through our fingers.

  613. But there's one thing

  614. that I want us to look at

  615. right here in the passage.

  616. You see that little word

  617. in verse 44?

  618. The kingdom of heaven

  619. is like treasure

  620. hidden,

  621. hidden in a field.

  622. That's not the first time

  623. that Jesus is referred

  624. to the kingdom as hidden,

  625. even in this chapter.

  626. Look back up to verse 34 and 35.

  627. We're going to find

  628. some great value

  629. of the kingdom

  630. in its hiddenness.

  631. All these things Jesus said

  632. to the crowds

  633. in verse 34,

  634. in parables,

  635. indeed he said nothing to them

  636. without a parable.

  637. This was to fulfill

  638. what was spoken by the prophet.

  639. I will open my mouth

  640. in parables.

  641. I will utter what has been

  642. hidden

  643. since the foundation

  644. of the world.

  645. And then in verse 33,

  646. when Jesus compares

  647. the kingdom of God

  648. to leaven

  649. working its way

  650. through a lump of dough

  651. in the flour,

  652. it's hidden

  653. in the flour.

  654. Do you notice that

  655. in verse 33?

  656. And then

  657. we see that this kingdom

  658. is something that's hidden

  659. since the foundation

  660. of the world.

  661. And now it's revealed.

  662. something that was secret.

  663. Something that was not known.

  664. And now it's beginning

  665. to be revealed

  666. through these parables.

  667. And Jesus' disciples

  668. are wondering,

  669. back in verse 10,

  670. Jesus,

  671. why are you speaking

  672. to these people

  673. in parables?

  674. And he begins

  675. to describe

  676. why the kingdom

  677. is hidden

  678. and then how it's revealed.

  679. He says that

  680. in verse 13 through 15,

  681. he starts to quote Isaiah 6.

  682. And he says

  683. that we as humans,

  684. we hear,

  685. but we don't understand.

  686. We see,

  687. but we don't perceive.

  688. Our heart is grown dull

  689. so that we,

  690. the truth is right

  691. in front of us.

  692. It's hidden

  693. in plain sight.

  694. But we don't get it.

  695. We can't get it.

  696. Our hearts are too dull

  697. because of our hardness

  698. of sin

  699. and not being able

  700. to respond

  701. to the truth

  702. of the king

  703. that we hear,

  704. but we don't hear.

  705. We see,

  706. but we don't see.

  707. The kingdom is hidden

  708. in plain sight.

  709. If we were to stop there,

  710. that would not be

  711. the kingdom's great value.

  712. That would be

  713. the kingdom's great tragedy

  714. that we see it

  715. in plain sight,

  716. but we don't get it.

  717. But it doesn't stop there.

  718. Notice what Jesus says

  719. in verse 16.

  720. Blessed are your eyes

  721. for they see

  722. and your ears

  723. for they hear.

  724. Truly,

  725. I say to you,

  726. many prophets

  727. and righteous people

  728. long to see

  729. what you see

  730. and did not see it

  731. and to hear what you hear

  732. and did not hear it.

  733. So we're picking up

  734. this gem

  735. of the kingdom

  736. and we're seeing

  737. that it was once hidden.

  738. Now it's revealed.

  739. I don't know if

  740. you've ever

  741. been brought in

  742. on a secret,

  743. but being brought in

  744. on a secret

  745. is kind of fun.

  746. There's a sense of value

  747. when you're brought in

  748. to a secret.

  749. I hope that you've read

  750. or seen the movie

  751. The Lion,

  752. the Witch,

  753. and the Wardrobe

  754. by C.S. Lewis

  755. in The Chronicles of Narnia.

  756. If you haven't,

  757. the story is that

  758. these four children

  759. walk into this world

  760. called Narnia.

  761. They don't know

  762. what's going on.

  763. They're clueless.

  764. And they run

  765. into this talking beaver

  766. and this talking beaver

  767. pulls them deep

  768. into the closest thicket

  769. of the forest

  770. and he's trying

  771. to get them away

  772. from any potential spies

  773. that might hear

  774. what he's about to tell them.

  775. He's about to reveal

  776. to them a secret

  777. and they have no idea

  778. what's going on.

  779. They're like,

  780. what's going on?

  781. And then he brings them in

  782. and he brings them close

  783. and he says,

  784. come on,

  785. close, close.

  786. You could see the whiskers

  787. trembling with excitement

  788. with this little beaver

  789. and he says,

  790. Aslan is on the move.

  791. And they didn't have a clue

  792. what that meant.

  793. They didn't know who Aslan was,

  794. but they were brought

  795. into a secret

  796. and all of a sudden

  797. that began to affect them.

  798. And they began to realize

  799. the preciousness

  800. of that truth

  801. that was just revealed to them.

  802. The kingdom was once

  803. hidden from our eyes,

  804. all of us,

  805. because we were,

  806. like Paul tells us

  807. in Romans 1,

  808. we could see the kingship of God

  809. in God's creation

  810. plain as day.

  811. We could see

  812. it was plain to us

  813. that he is the king,

  814. that God created this world,

  815. that he is,

  816. as absolute moral authority

  817. over all of creation.

  818. It's plain as day,

  819. but we don't see it.

  820. And then all of a sudden,

  821. by grace,

  822. we do.

  823. The kingdom

  824. is revealed.

  825. We're led into a secret,

  826. and it's in that rarity

  827. of hearing the secret

  828. of the kingdom of God

  829. that the kingdom

  830. is all of a sudden

  831. very valuable.

  832. You don't go to an art show

  833. and lay down millions of dollars

  834. for a copy of a painting,

  835. for something that anyone can get.

  836. You go to an art show

  837. and lay down millions of dollars

  838. for that one,

  839. because it's so rare.

  840. It's in the rarity

  841. of the kingdom,

  842. of having our eyes opened

  843. by the king.

  844. And that's what happened

  845. to these disciples.

  846. They saw Jesus,

  847. they were called by Jesus,

  848. and they began to follow Jesus,

  849. and they realized that,

  850. hey, here's the king.

  851. And sooner or later,

  852. they realized

  853. the secret of the kingdom

  854. is revealed to us.

  855. Not because of anything we do,

  856. but because of sheer grace.

  857. And not only is the kingdom

  858. so rare and valuable

  859. because those whose eyes

  860. can see the kingdom

  861. are only those

  862. whose eyes have been opened

  863. by the kingdom,

  864. or by the king

  865. to see the kingdom.

  866. Not only is it so rare

  867. and valuable,

  868. but it is also costly.

  869. Because the one

  870. who brought us

  871. under his reign

  872. paid a very high price

  873. for us to be able

  874. to come under his reign.

  875. Our king is also

  876. our priest,

  877. our mediator,

  878. our sacrifice.

  879. So this is the kingdom of heaven.

  880. If we gaze at the infinite worth

  881. of the kingdom,

  882. the infinite worth

  883. of this king,

  884. then all we've got here

  885. and now,

  886. it's pennies

  887. for millions.

  888. It's a no-brainer.

  889. And it's not fool's gold.

  890. It's the real deal.

  891. Alright, so we've examined

  892. we've gazed

  893. and now I want us

  894. to open a few things.

  895. First,

  896. let's respond to God's word

  897. by opening a few things.

  898. First, let's open our eyes.

  899. The king is putting

  900. hidden treasure

  901. in plain view.

  902. So do you see it?

  903. Do you recognize

  904. the unequaled value

  905. of the kingdom?

  906. Living under

  907. the rule of King Jesus

  908. is worth

  909. giving up anything

  910. and everything.

  911. Let me read Paul's words

  912. in Philippians 3 to you.

  913. But whatever gain I had,

  914. I counted it as loss

  915. for the sake of Christ.

  916. Indeed,

  917. I count everything

  918. as loss

  919. because of the

  920. surpassing worth

  921. of knowing Christ Jesus,

  922. my Lord.

  923. For his sake,

  924. I suffer the loss

  925. of all things

  926. and I count them

  927. as trash,

  928. rubbish,

  929. in order that I may

  930. gain Christ

  931. and be found

  932. in him,

  933. not having a righteousness

  934. of my own

  935. that comes from the law

  936. but that which comes

  937. through faith

  938. in Christ,

  939. the righteousness of God

  940. that depends

  941. on faith.

  942. Do you hear Paul's

  943. sold out joy?

  944. His determination

  945. to get the one thing

  946. that is worth having?

  947. Paul is saying,

  948. all that I've got,

  949. it's loss

  950. compared to the gain

  951. of getting the kingdom.

  952. I want to belong to Jesus.

  953. I want to come

  954. under his rule.

  955. I want the gain

  956. of the king

  957. and the kingdom.

  958. I want the whole package

  959. of saying yes

  960. to Jesus

  961. no matter what

  962. it costs me now.

  963. So do you see it?

  964. Let's open our eyes

  965. and just see the value,

  966. the worth

  967. of the king

  968. and the kingdom.

  969. If you're sitting here

  970. this morning

  971. and you're wondering,

  972. I don't know

  973. if I see it.

  974. I don't know

  975. if I get it.

  976. I don't know

  977. if I'm in it.

  978. I don't know

  979. what there is.

  980. Please,

  981. please hear,

  982. don't just let that sit.

  983. Act on it.

  984. Act on God

  985. is beginning

  986. to open your eyes

  987. to see the treasure

  988. that's hidden

  989. in plain sight.

  990. There will be people

  991. down here

  992. to help you out

  993. with that

  994. after the service.

  995. I'll be down there.

  996. I'd love to pray with you.

  997. Second,

  998. open your hands.

  999. We want to open our hands.

  1000. We want to look

1001. and see what we've got

  1002. in this life.

  1003. Just take a moment

  1004. to personally assess,

  1005. what have I got?

1006. Have I counted it up?

1007. Have I counted the cost

1008. of all that I've got

  1009. in this life

  1010. from my money

  1011. to my possessions

  1012. to my career,

  1013. my family,

  1014. my talents,

  1015. my dreams,

  1016. my car,

  1017. my home,

  1018. my time,

  1019. my energy?

  1020. Remember,

  1021. all you've got here

  1022. is pennies

  1023. for millions.

  1024. is laying down

  1025. the kingdom of self

  1026. that you've got

  1027. here in your hands,

  1028. is it worth it

  1029. to gain the kingdom

  1030. of heaven?

  1031. Is there anything

  1032. that you're tempted

  1033. in these hands

  1034. of yours

  1035. to say,

  1036. no,

  1037. no,

  1038. not that.

  1039. That's worth more

1040. to me than the kingdom

  1041. is.

  1042. Listen to what Jesus

  1043. is saying.

  1044. He's saying,

  1045. lay it all down.

  1046. If I could use a quote

1047. that just never gets tired,

  1048. Jim Elliott said,

  1049. he is no fool

1050. who gives what he cannot

  1051. keep.

  1052. That's the kingdom

  1053. of self.

  1054. To gain

  1055. what he cannot lose,

  1056. that's the kingdom

  1057. of heaven.

  1058. If you're saying

  1059. that the kingdom

  1060. isn't worth losing this,

  1061. then Jesus is gently

  1062. but firmly telling you

  1063. in these parables,

  1064. you're wrong.

  1065. It is.

  1066. Trust him.

  1067. As Andrew Peterson,

  1068. songwriter,

  1069. said,

1070. when it's all you have,

  1071. it's all you'll ever need.

  1072. Next,

1073. I want you to open

  1074. your hood.

  1075. I've opened my hood

1076. to my car a few times

1077. to see what's going on

  1078. in there.

1079. I want us to open

1080. the hood of our lives

  1081. and see what's

  1082. driving that.

  1083. What's driving,

  1084. what's the engine

  1085. that's driving our lives?

  1086. Is it affections

1087. for the kingdom of God,

  1088. the kingdom of heaven,

  1089. or is it affections

  1090. for something else?

1091. Not to say that things

1092. of this world aren't good,

  1093. they are,

1094. that there are good gifts

  1095. from the creator,

  1096. they are,

1097. but what's driving your life?

  1098. What's the functional

  1099. treasure of your heart?

1100. Is it the kingdom of self?

1101. Or is it the kingdom

  1102. of heaven?

1103. Whose rule are you under?

  1104. And how is that

  1105. driving your life?

1106. So I want us to open

  1107. that hood

1108. and take some of that

  1109. into consideration.

  1110. Lastly,

1111. last thing I want us

  1112. to open is,

  1113. if you get it,

  1114. if you see it,

  1115. if you realize

  1116. all I've got here

  1117. is pennies for millions,

  1118. then open your mouth.

  1119. Open your mouth,

  1120. there are many

  1121. who,

  1122. all of us

  1123. were once

  1124. in the dark

  1125. of living for self,

  1126. and Jesus is saying,

  1127. go out and tell.

  1128. This kingdom is

1129. treasure buried in a field.

  1130. It's the finest thing

  1131. you could ever have.

  1132. If you've got treasure,

1133. your mouth's going to talk about it.

  1134. So open your mouth.

  1135. Let's pray

  1136. and

  1137. let's ask God's help

  1138. to respond well.

  1139. Father,

  1140. thank you

  1141. that you have revealed

  1142. your word to us.

  1143. You've revealed

  1144. your kingdom to us

  1145. through the mouth

  1146. of your son,

  1147. Jesus Christ.

  1148. Thank you,

  1149. King Jesus,

  1150. that you came

  1151. to bring the kingdom

  1152. to us.

  1153. And thank you,

  1154. God,

  1155. that there is nothing

  1156. more valuable

  1157. than your kingdom.

  1158. Father,

  1159. help us

  1160. as a church,

  1161. help us

  1162. as individuals

  1163. to recognize

  1164. that

  1165. it is worth,

  1166. joyfully

  1167. worth

  1168. every cost

  1169. to receive

  1170. the kingdom.

  1171. Father,

  1172. help us

  1173. to live

  1174. for your

  1175. saving reign.

  1176. May that be

  1177. the engine

  1178. that drives our lives,

  1179. may be the treasure

  1180. that our hearts

  1181. so desperately want.

  1182. Father,

  1183. help us

  1184. to give up

  1185. what we cannot keep

1186. to get what we cannot lose.

  1187. Help us

  1188. to respond in faith

  1189. now by your spirit.

  1190. Help us

  1191. to make decisions

  1192. of obedience

1193. to respond to this truth.

  1194. We ask it

  1195. in Christ's name.

  1196. Amen.
