  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 13, we're looking at the last of the eight parables of the parabolic discourse in Matthew chapter 13, 1 through 53.

Matthew 13 chapter mention Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2. And so if you would look to Matthew 13, 1, or excuse me, 13, 51 through 52, let me read that for us.

  3. This is the word of the Lord. This came off the lips of our King Jesus.

  4. Have you understood all these things? Jesus asked his disciples.

  5. And they said to him, yes.

  6. And he said to them, therefore, every scribe who's been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house

  7. who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.

  8. These are the words of the Lord.

  9. If you've got your Bible open, would you lift up your open Bible in front of you,

  10. and I want you to repeat this one word after me.

  11. It's the word treasure.

  12. Ready?

  13. One, two, three.

  14. Treasure.

  15. This book has treasure in it.

  16. It's God's Word.

  17. It's living and active.

  18. God speaking to us.

  19. All authoritative, life-giving treasure.

  20. Treasure.

  21. That's what this book is.

  22. God reveals the kingdom in the book.

  23. And in this chapter, in this section,

  24. we read about a new kind of scribe.

  25. Therefore, every scribe.

  26. It's a new kind of position in the kingdom.

  27. Scribes of the kingdom have this growing understanding of the kingdom

  28. and have this growing impulse to share something that Jesus calls treasure.

  29. Scribes of the kingdom bring out the treasure of the kingdom.

  30. And that the treasure of the kingdom is the life-changing understanding

  31. of what God has done for sinners in Jesus.

  32. The saving reign of God.

  33. Scribes get it and they give it.

  34. They get the treasure and they give the treasure.

  35. And this morning, we're going to just walk through these two verses.

  36. In verse 51, Jesus asks His disciples a question.

  37. Have you understood all these things?

  38. And His disciples at the end of verse 51 says,

  39. they say, yes.

  40. And then Jesus in 52,

  41. He wraps everything up that He's been proclaiming.

  42. With a therefore.

  43. And He shares with us a concluding parable.

  44. And what He says to His disciples back in the first century,

  45. He's saying to us disciples in the 21st century.

  46. If you've got the treasure, you give the treasure.

  47. This morning, we're going to proceed by looking at His question about understanding.

  48. Then we're going to take a quick look at the disciples' answer, yes.

  49. And then we're going to spend some time in His concluding parable.

  50. It's a wrap-up parable.

  51. And that word, therefore, in the beginning of verse 52 is a big clue.

  52. And then, we're going to bring it to bear on our own lives.

  53. Our present call as kingdom scribes.

  54. And what you're going to find there is a help-wanted side.

  55. Scribes wanted in Christ the King Church.

  56. There's treasure to be shared.

  57. So, let's look at this question in verse 51.

  58. Jesus asks His disciples,

  59. Have you understood all these things?

  60. And whenever you see something like all these things,

  61. you're asking the question, what?

  62. What things, Jesus?

  63. What are you referring to?

  64. What is this all these things business?

  65. And the easy way to answer it,

  66. it's just what He's been sharing.

  67. It's what precedes it.

  68. It's the seven parables with explanations that have gone before.

  69. That's what Jesus is referring to.

  70. He's talking about the parable of the soils.

  71. Four responses, but just two kinds of hearts.

  72. The parable of the weeds.

  73. The parable of the mustard seed.

  74. And the parable of the leaven.

  75. The parable of the hidden treasure and pearl of great price.

  76. The parable of the dragnet.

  77. These are the things that Jesus is referring to.

  78. Have you understood these things?

  79. All these things.

  80. And of course, they're all parables of the kingdom.

  81. And what I've been wanting to help you understand is when Jesus talks about the kingdom,

  82. He's talking about the saving reign of God in the person of Jesus Christ.

  83. God has come and He's seeking to save and bring sinners into His kingdom by His grace.

  84. And so these are all parables of different dimensions and aspects of the saving reign of God.

  85. And so Jesus is asking, hey, do you understand all these things I'm telling you in parables about the kingdom?

  86. Do you understand that this good news brings about a kingdom produce?

  87. Do you understand with the parable of the weeds and of the dragnet that a kingdom perspective yields this understanding that we're moving to a judgment day?

  88. Do you understand that this good news is?

  89. Do you understand that this good news is?

  90. Do you get with the parables of the hidden treasure in the pearl of great price that the kingdom is of incomparable worth and worth giving everything to have?

  91. Do you get it?

  92. Do you get that the parable of the mustard seed and leaven that the kingdom of heaven is hidden in nature but progressing and will eventually be fully seen?

  93. Do you get it?

  94. God's at work.

  95. All these parables are referring back to some aspect of the kingdom, the saving reign of God.

  96. Jesus isn't talking about geometry here.

  97. He's not talking about cooking.

  98. He's talking about the kingdom.

  99. And so when He says, have you understood all these things?

  100. He's saying, do you get the kingdom?

  101. Do you get that I've come to save?

  102. What you need to understand is what Jesus meant by understood.

  103. Have you understood all these things?

  104. It's tied to His use of parables.

  105. Now remember, parables are like vertical blinds.

  106. You know how you open up a vertical blind and you can see outside the window?

  107. Well, a parable would hide the truth of the kingdom to those with a hard heart,

  108. but a parable would be opened to a person that God has softened their heart.

  109. God reveals the truth of the kingdom to those with tender hearts.

  110. Now when we use the word understand, we typically use it in terms of figuring something out.

  111. And I think right now I'm going to get a yes and an amen from parents and grandparents.

  112. If you buy a dollhouse for your little girl,

  113. before your little sweetheart girl gets to play in it,

  114. you will need to assemble it.

  115. In order for you to assemble it,

  116. you will need to figure out the directions.

  117. And that is no small thing nowadays.

  118. Do I have an amen?

  119. Nowadays, you've got to get some kind of degree in engineering

  120. in order to assemble a dollhouse for your little sweetheart.

  121. But after you figure out the directions,

  122. you have an understanding of things,

  123. then you can go about putting it together.

  124. That's not the kind of understanding Jesus is talking about.

  125. He's not talking about figured out understanding.

  126. The understanding that Jesus is talking about

  127. is God-given understanding.

  128. When God gives you eyes to see,

  129. when God gives you ears to hear,

  130. when God gives you a heart to understand.

  131. And so what we see happening in these parables,

  132. these parables reveal the truth of the kingdom,

  133. and God gives the understanding to comprehend it.

  134. And so we see that being played out in Matthew 13.

  135. In chapter 13, verse 10,

  136. Jesus has just shared the parable of the soils,

  137. and His disciples come up to Him,

  138. and they say,

  139. hey, why do you speak to them in parables?

  140. And in verse 11, Jesus answers them,

  141. and He says,

  142. to you, disciples, it has been given.

  143. You've got to be thinking grace right there.

  144. It's been given to know,

  145. understand the secrets,

  146. hiddenness of the kingdom.

  147. Understanding is given as a gift,

  148. but to them, it's not been given.

  149. This understanding is a God-given gift.

  150. What God does is He enables us

  151. to actually comprehend the kingdom of God.

  152. That's how sinful we are.

  153. He needs to break in

  154. and enable us by His Spirit to do this.

  155. So Jesus reveals the kingdom in His parables,

  156. but the understanding is given by God.

  157. Now, if you find yourself,

  158. well, I don't buy that self, honey.

  159. Flip over to Matthew 11.

  160. Is this what Jesus means?

  161. In verse 25, Jesus declared,

  162. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  163. that you have hidden these things

  164. from the wise and understanding

  165. and revealed them to little children,

  166. those who are humble.

  167. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will

  168. to reveal them.

  169. All things have been handed over to me

  170. by my Father,

  171. and no one knows the Son except the Father,

  172. and no one knows the Father except the Son,

  173. and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

  174. What we see Jesus saying here

  175. is that this understanding

  176. all throughout Matthew 13

  177. is a God-given insight

  178. into the hiddenness of the kingdom

  179. concealed in the parables.

  180. It's a work of God.

  181. So Jesus is not asking His disciples,

  182. hey guys, have you figured out my parables?

  183. He's asking His disciples,

  184. do you have eyes to see?

  185. Do you have ears to hear?

  186. Do you have an understanding

  187. that only God gives?

  188. And let me just add this,

  189. it is a saving understanding.

  190. It's an understanding that makes you realize

  191. I need to be rescued.

  192. I need to be in the kingdom,

  193. and only the King gets me into His kingdom.

  194. And Jesus would die in order to make that happen.

  195. So what we're seeing here is this understanding,

  196. this when Jesus says,

  197. have you understood all these things?

  198. He's not asking them if they've figured it out.

  199. He's asking,

  200. hey,

  201. has God given you the insight

  202. into the kingdom,

  203. the saving reign of God?

  204. And this is a question

  205. that's moving towards a conclusion.

  206. He is wrapping up this discourse.

  207. You know,

  208. I'm an assistant coach

  209. for my son's lacrosse team,

  210. and what will happen is

  211. something happened out on the field,

  212. and it's not good.

  213. And so what the coach does is like,

  214. time out.

  215. The players come in,

  216. you huddle up,

  217. and you're like,

  218. okay guys,

  219. this went wrong,

  220. and this went wrong.

  221. Here's what we need to kind of fix it.

  222. Do you understand?

  223. And they're like,

  224. yeah, yeah, yeah,

  225. we get it,

  226. yeah, we get it.

  227. And then they go out,

  228. and you really see

  229. if they get it or not.

  230. And so what Jesus is doing here

  231. is He's bringing His disciples together

  232. after His parabolic discourse,

  233. and He says,

  234. do you get it?

  235. Because if you get it,

  236. I'm sending you out to give it.

  237. And they're going to reply

  238. in just a moment.

  239. This morning,

  240. I want you to put yourself

  241. in the place of these disciples.

  242. Do you understand the kingdom?

  243. Do you understand

  244. all these things?

  245. Do you get

  246. that Jesus has come

  247. to inaugurate a kingdom

  248. of salvation?

  249. Let's look at

  250. the end of verse 51

  251. because we see

  252. the quick answer

  253. of the disciples.

  254. And oddly,

  255. I think you'll be

  256. strangely encouraged.

  257. Have you understood

  258. all these things,

  259. Jesus asks?

  260. And they say,

  261. yes.

  262. Now,

  263. we're not told

  264. if that was a chorus

  265. of yeses,

  266. like they look at each other,

  267. yes!

  268. or if it's kind of popcorn,

  269. yes to the yes,

  270. yes,

  271. yes.

  272. It's just a yes.

  273. But what are they saying

  274. yes to?

  275. Well,

  276. if we're understanding

  277. what Jesus is asking,

  278. right,

  279. He's saying,

  280. hey,

  281. do you understand

  282. that the saving reign

  283. of God

  284. has come

  285. in me?

  286. and they're saying,

  287. yes,

  288. we understand

  289. these parables

  290. are saying

  291. the saving reign

  292. of God

  293. has come.

  294. Now,

  295. the question,

  296. their response,

  297. we've got to ask,

  298. do they really understand

  299. what they're saying?

  300. Because all throughout

  301. Matthew,

  302. Jesus has this

  303. common refrain

  304. for His disciples,

  305. oh,

  306. you of little faith.

  307. Oh,

  308. you of little faith.

  309. Oh,

  310. you of little faith.

  311. Oh,

  312. guys.

  313. Guys.

  314. I mean,

  315. in Matthew 16,

  316. in just a couple chapters out,

  317. Peter is going to make

  318. the confession.

  319. You are the Christ,

  320. the Son of the living God.

  321. And Jesus is going to say,

  322. only God reveals that,

  323. man.

  324. And then within

  325. just a few verses

  326. from that,

  327. Jesus is going to start

  328. talking about

  329. He's going to go

  330. to Jerusalem,

  331. He's going to be

  332. handed over,

  333. killed,

  334. and raised again.

  335. And Peter says,

  336. no way!

  337. That's not going to happen.

  338. And then Jesus says,

  339. get behind me,

  340. Satan.

  341. You don't get it.

  342. And so,

  343. in the disciples,

  344. we see this,

  345. sometimes they get it,

  346. sometimes they don't.

  347. Do they really understand

  348. what Jesus is saying here?

  349. And what we notice is,

  350. Jesus takes them

  351. at their word.

  352. He takes them

  353. at face value.

  354. He takes their yes

  355. as yes.

  356. Hey,

  357. they may not understand

  358. every detail

  359. about the kingdom,

  360. but they know enough.

  361. They may have a little faith,

  362. but Jesus is a great king.

  363. How about you?

  364. Do you get everything

  365. about the kingdom?

  366. Do you have to?

  367. You need to know

  368. that Jesus is the king,

  369. and you need to know

  370. that the kingdom

  371. is a kingdom of salvation.

  372. Maybe the question is,

  373. do you want to?

  374. Do you want to know

  375. the king?

  376. Do you want to be

  377. a part of his kingdom?

  378. That's the question.

  379. And his disciples

  380. said yes,

  381. they're following him.

  382. And so,

  383. Jesus takes their yes

  384. as yes,

  385. and he goes on

  386. to make a concluding parable.

  387. And that's where

  388. I want to draw

  389. your attention to now,

  390. verse 52.

  391. Therefore,

  392. every scribe

  393. who has been trained

  394. for the kingdom

  395. is like a master

  396. of a house.

  397. Now,

  398. the first thing

  399. you need to notice

  400. is the first word

  401. of verse 52.

  402. Actually,

  403. it's the first word

  404. in red.

  405. Therefore.

  406. Now,

  407. you've got to ask

  408. your question.

  409. Whenever you encounter

  410. a therefore

  411. in the Bible

  412. or in a newspaper

  413. or in just some book,

  414. you've got to be

  415. asking the question,

  416. what is the therefore?

  417. Let me hear it.

  418. Therefore.

  419. Here enters

  420. a little song

  421. called

  422. Conjunction Junction.

  423. Conjunction Junction,

  424. what's your function?

  425. Hooking up cars.

  426. Wait,

  427. hooking up words,

  428. phrases,

  429. clauses,

  430. clauses,

  431. clauses,

  432. conjunction,

  433. junction.

  434. Now,

  435. this therefore

  436. is a conjunction.

  437. It's a coordinating

  438. conjunction.

  439. It coordinates.

  440. And what it's coordinating

  441. is what has gone

  442. before it

  443. and what comes

  444. after it.

  445. And so,

  446. what has come before it?

  447. Jesus asked the question,

  448. have you understood

  449. all these things?

  450. The disciple says,

  451. yes!

  452. And so,

  453. Jesus takes that

  454. and coordinates it

  455. with His response.

  456. Therefore,

  457. if you understand

  458. the kingdom,

  459. therefore,

  460. you are a scribe

  461. of the kingdom.

  462. That's what He's saying.

  463. That's the therefore.

  464. That's the connection.

  465. Their understanding

  466. of the parables

  467. results in their

  468. becoming disciples

  469. which shows up

  470. in them being

  471. scribes of the kingdom.

  472. If you get it,

  473. you give it.

  474. If you understand it,

  475. you share the understanding.

  476. What's this scribe business?

  477. Therefore,

  478. every scribe...

  479. What's a scribe?

  480. Well,

  481. a scribe was someone

  482. back in Jesus' day

  483. who understood God's law

  484. as revealed in God's book.

  485. Scribes were a kind of

  486. Old Testament specialists.

  487. And back in Jesus' day,

  488. scribes,

  489. their role was institutionalized

  490. in Jewish culture.

  491. And so,

  492. when Herod wants to know

  493. where the Messiah

  494. was to be born

  495. in Matthew 2.4,

  496. He kind of rings a bell

  497. for the scribes.

  498. And He says,

  499. Hey, where was the Messiah

  500. to be born?

  501. And they respond

  502. with Micah 5.2,

  503. And you, O Bethlehem,

  504. in the land of Judah,

  505. are by no means

  506. least among the rulers

  507. of Judah.

  508. For from you

  509. shall come a ruler

  510. who will shepherd

  511. my people Israel.

  512. They knew where

  513. to find the answer.

  514. There were pros.

  515. Experts!

  516. Experts!

  517. In the Old Testament,

  518. Ezra was a priest

  519. and a scribe

  520. who had set his heart

  521. to study the law

  522. of the Lord

  523. and to do it

  524. and to teach

  525. his statutes

  526. and rules in Israel.

  527. That's Ezra 7.10,

  528. one of my life verses.

  529. And so,

  530. what we see in the model

  531. scribe in Ezra

  532. is someone who studied,

  533. who applied it,

  534. to do it,

  535. and then shared it.

  536. The problem with the scribes

  537. in Jesus' day

  538. is I'll let you

  539. look at what Jesus says.

  540. Turn to Matthew 23.

  541. Matthew 23,

    Matthew 23:1

  542. verse 1 and 2.

  543. Remember,

  544. we're talking about scribes

  545. and what scribes do.

  546. Then Jesus said to the crowds

  547. and to his disciples,

  548. the scribes

  549. and the Pharisees

  550. sit on Moses' seat,

  551. so do and observe

  552. whatever they tell you,

  553. but not the works they do.

  554. Apparently,

  555. the scribes were well-versed

  556. in the Bible,

  557. but they weren't doing the Bible.

  558. And the scribes

  559. that Jesus is calling to Himself

  560. and sending out,

  561. the kingdom scribes,

  562. those who have understanding

  563. of the kingdom,

  564. you know what makes us

  565. experts in the kingdom?

  566. We have been personally

  567. affected by the king.

  568. We've been in His presence

  569. and we do what He says.

  570. So scribes were people of the book.

  571. They read the book.

  572. They studied the book.

  573. They taught the book.

  574. They were seen as experts

  575. because of their understanding.

  576. Scribes were teachers.

  577. They shared their understanding

  578. of the law.

  579. In verse 52,

  580. Jesus is calling a scribe

  581. all who by God's grace

  582. have understood

  583. the parables of the kingdom.

  584. The disciples of Jesus

  585. are scribes of the kingdom.

  586. It's a new kind of scribe.

  587. Jesus has brought a new kingdom

  588. with a new kind of scribe.

  589. They get it

  590. and they give it.

  591. Now,

  592. if you're wondering right now,

  593. oh man,

  594. scribe,

  595. are you kidding me?

  596. I barely know where Genesis is.

  597. Come on.

  598. Here's something

  599. encouraging to remember.

  600. Remember who Jesus

  601. is talking to.

  602. He's talking to his disciples.

  603. And we don't know

  604. how many disciples

  605. were in this house

  606. that he was in right now.

  607. We know at least

  608. there was the 12.

  609. And four of those 12

  610. were fishermen.

  611. They had no formal training

  612. as a scribe.

  613. One was a zealot.

  614. Chances are they didn't have

  615. formal training as a scribe

  616. in the school of Hillel.

  617. And then there's

  618. this guy writing,

  619. Matthew,

  620. who was a former tax collector.

  621. So we know

  622. that at least half

  623. of the 12 disciples

  624. were not formally trained

  625. as scribes

  626. in the classic sense,

  627. but Jesus is calling them

  628. a scribe.

  629. Do you know why?

  630. they're in the Jesus school

  631. of biblical interpretation.

  632. In Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  633. Paul and John,

  634. they're arrested

  635. and then they're brought

  636. before the high priestly council.

  637. and Peter's filled

  638. by the Spirit

  639. and he shares

  640. this compelling,

  641. compelling word

  642. and it kind of climaxes

  643. in Acts 4.12

  644. which many of you

  645. know by heart

  646. and it says this,

  647. and there is salvation

  648. in no one else

  649. for there's no other name

  650. under heaven

  651. given among men

  652. by which we must be saved.

  653. And he's talking about Jesus.

  654. He's talking about

  655. the saving kingdom of Christ.

  656. And he's talking it right

  657. to the Jewish establishment

  658. and hierarchy.

  659. That's pretty bold.

  660. Look at verse 13.

  661. Now when they,

  662. the Jewish council,

  663. saw the boldness

  664. of Peter and John

  665. and perceived

  666. that they were uneducated,

  667. common men,

  668. they were astonished.

  669. They're not scribes

  670. in the formal sense.

  671. But then look at this.

  672. And they recognized

  673. that they had been with Jesus.

  674. Do you know what makes us

  675. experts in the kingdom?

  676. Do you know what makes us

  677. scribes of the kingdom?

  678. We hang out with the king.

  679. We belong to him.

  680. We're his followers.

  681. We're part of his school.

  682. Peter and John

  683. just happen to be part

  684. of the inaugural class

  685. of the Jesus School

  686. of Biblical Interpretation.

  687. But everyone who's come

  688. to understand

  689. the saving kingdom of God

  690. since,

  691. they enter the school as well.

  692. We become followers of Jesus

  693. and we become

  694. his scribes.

  695. So what is Jesus saying

  696. to his disciples?

  697. Hey, your understanding

  698. of the parables

  699. authorizes you

  700. to be scribes

  701. of the kingdom.

  702. You're a new kind

  703. of scribe.

  704. And as scribes

  705. of the kingdom,

  706. we teach what Jesus taught.

  707. So these scribes

  708. were understanding,

  709. they personally

  710. experienced the kingdom,

  711. and they are then

  712. to turn around

  713. and teach others

  714. as well

  715. about the kingdom.

  716. Therefore,

  717. every scribe

  718. who's been trained

  719. for the kingdom

  720. of heaven.

  721. That's a really

  722. interesting phrase

  723. in the original language.

  724. Who've been trained

  725. for the kingdom

  726. of heaven.

  727. It's actually,

  728. the verb is the word

  729. we get

  730. disciple from.

  731. And so another way

  732. to understand this

  733. is who have

  734. become disciples

  735. of the kingdom

  736. of heaven.

  737. And so what Jesus

  738. is saying here

  739. is that scribes

  740. are disciples.

  741. Followers of Jesus.

  742. The king.

  743. And then he goes

  744. on to the parable.

  745. He then goes

  746. into the comparison.

  747. Jesus says,

  748. hey, you understand it,

  749. now give it,

  750. you're scribes,

  751. and when you do,

  752. you're like this.

  753. Master of a house

  754. who brings out

  755. of his treasure

  756. what is new

  757. and what is old.

  758. Jesus is comparing

  759. what scribes do

  760. with a master

  761. of a house

  762. who brings out

  763. of his treasure

  764. new and old stuff.

  765. It's a comparison

  766. between the work

  767. of a scribe

  768. of the kingdom

  769. and this guy

  770. showing off

  771. his treasure.

  772. Jesus is saying

  773. that his disciples

  774. who have a

  775. dissaving understanding

  776. of the kingdom

  777. and therefore

  778. are scribes,

  779. they bring out

  780. the treasure

  781. of the kingdom.

  782. They have experienced

  783. the treasure

  784. and now they bring

  785. out the treasure.

  786. A master of a house

  787. was the owner

  788. of a house

  789. and so he had

  790. the authority

  791. and means

  792. to buy and sell

  793. whatever he wanted.

  794. He could hire and fire

  795. as he pleased

  796. and so Jesus is saying

  797. this guy with authority

  798. brings out

  799. for all to see

  800. his treasure

  801. new and old.

  802. The picture

  803. is of someone

  804. with authority

  805. bringing out

  806. all of his stuff

  807. for everybody

  808. to look at

  809. and be amazed by.

  810. As scribes

  811. of the kingdom

  812. were authorized

  813. to bring out

  814. the treasures

  815. of the kingdom

  816. new and old.

  817. If you understand

  818. the kingdom

  819. you share the kingdom.

  820. If you get it

  821. you give it.

  822. what's this treasure?

  823. What is Jesus

  824. talking about here?

  825. The treasure

  826. he's already talked

  827. about in 1344

  828. it's hidden.

  829. So the treasure

  830. is the saving

  831. understanding

  832. of the kingdom.

  833. It's getting it.

  834. It's understanding

  835. that the king

  836. has just not come

  837. just not setting up

  838. a kingdom.

  839. He came for me

  840. and he came

  841. to bring me

  842. into the kingdom.

  843. I was in need

  844. of being saved

  845. and the king

  846. came for me.

  847. That's the treasure.

  848. The treasure

  849. is salvation.

  850. The treasure

  851. is what God

  852. in Christ

  853. offers everyone.

  854. and those

  855. who see it

  856. and understand it

  857. they're brought

  858. into the kingdom.

  859. They know it.

  860. They experience it.

  861. The question

  862. that I want to ask

  863. for you this morning

  864. is

  865. where do we find

  866. the kingdom?

  867. Where do we

  868. look to

  869. in order to

  870. understand

  871. the kingdom

  872. of heaven?

  873. Where do we

  874. turn to

  875. and understand

  876. who God is

  877. in his work

  878. of salvation?

  879. where do we

  880. look?

  881. Right there.

  882. This book.

  883. This book

  884. gives the kingdom.

  885. This book

  886. reveals the

  887. treasure.

  888. It makes it

  889. known.

  890. God reveals

  891. himself

  892. in this book.

  893. When you

  894. open up

  895. the Bible

  896. you are

  897. opening up

  898. God's

  899. treasure

  900. trove

  901. of

  902. transformational

  903. truth.

  904. that's what

  905. you're doing

  906. every time

  907. you open

  908. it up.

  909. It's God

  910. speaking.

  911. It's an

  912. amazing

  913. treasure.

  914. And Jesus

  915. describes it

  916. as a treasure

  917. new and

  918. old.

  919. And the

  920. best way

  921. to understand

  922. that is

  923. to remember

  924. the words

  925. of Jesus

  926. in Matthew

  927. 5.17

  928. where he

  929. says do

  930. not think

  931. that I've

  932. come to

  933. abolish the

  934. law or

  935. the prophets

  936. the Old

  937. Testament.

  938. I've not

  939. come to

  940. abolish them

  941. but to

  942. fulfill them.

  943. And so he

  944. didn't come

  945. to relax the

  946. law but to

  947. explain the

  948. true meaning

  949. of the law.

  950. And so his

  951. new teaching

  952. on what the

  953. old law truly

  954. meant was

  955. astonishing to

  956. people.

  957. It was

  958. treasure.

  959. So a way to

  960. think about

  961. this old and

  962. new in a

  963. very general

  964. sense think

  965. about the

  966. old treasure

  967. as the

  968. truths revealed

  969. in the Old

  970. Testament.

  971. It's the

  972. treasure of

  973. our origins.

  974. It explains

  975. who we are,

  976. where we come

  977. from.

  978. It explains

  979. why there's

  980. such a

  981. complicated

  982. mess of

  983. evil in

  984. the world.

  985. All

  986. throughout the

  987. Old Testament

  988. there is

  989. treasure to

  990. be found.

  991. God

  992. revealing

  993. Himself

  994. over and

  995. over and

  996. over again.

  997. Steadfast

  998. love,

  999. faithful,

  1000. holy,

  1001. sovereign,

  1002. all knowing,

  1003. all powerful,

  1004. all present,

  1005. all the

  1006. time.

  1007. Again and

  1008. again and

  1009. again,

  1010. the Old

  1011. Testament

  1012. reveals

  1013. truths,

  1014. precious

  1015. truths about

  1016. God.

  1017. So think

  1018. about the

  1019. old treasure

  1020. as the

  1021. Old Testament

  1022. and think

  1023. about the

  1024. new treasure

  1025. as the

  1026. truths revealed

  1027. in the

  1028. New Testament.

  1029. And the

  1030. difference

  1031. between the

  1032. Old Testament

  1033. and the

  1034. New Testament

  1035. is Jesus.

  1036. The Old

  1037. Testament

  1038. anticipated

  1039. Jesus and

  1040. the New

  1041. Testament

  1042. is written

  1043. after Jesus

  1044. coming.

  1045. The difference

  1046. that Jesus

  1047. makes.

  1048. who is

  1049. Jesus and

  1050. why He

  1051. came?

  1052. New Testament

  1053. treasure.

  1054. God's plan

  1055. of salvation

  1056. clarified.

  1057. God's new

  1058. people,

  1059. the church,

  1060. how Christians

  1061. are to live

  1062. for Christ

  1063. in this

  1064. world,

  1065. being prepared

  1066. for His

  1067. second coming.

  1068. It's treasure,

  1069. treasure,

  1070. treasure.

  1071. The Old

  1072. Testament

  1073. is absolutely

  1074. essential to

  1075. the New

  1076. Testament

  1077. and the

  1078. New Testament

  1079. is a

  1080. necessary

  1081. fulfillment

  1082. of the

  1083. Old.

  1084. You need

  1085. them both.

  1086. It's all

  1087. treasure.

  1088. All

  1089. Scripture

  1090. is God's

  1091. breathed

  1092. treasure.

  1093. Old

  1094. Testament

  1095. and New

  1096. Testament.

  1097. It's one

  1098. big treasure

  1099. box.

  1100. So,

  1101. what is

  1102. Jesus

  1103. saying

  1104. here?

  1105. His

  1106. disciples

  1107. are scribes

  1108. of His

  1109. kingdom

  1110. who bring

  1111. out the

  1112. treasure

  1113. of God's

  1114. revelation

  1115. of His

  1116. word,

  1117. old and

  1118. new.

  1119. So,

  1120. which leads

  1121. us to our

  1122. present call.

  1123. If you're

  1124. a follower

  1125. of Jesus,

  1126. you're a

  1127. disciple of

  1128. Jesus,

  1129. you get

  1130. the

  1131. kingdom.

  1132. And so,

  1133. what Jesus

  1134. is saying to

  1135. you this

  1136. morning is,

  1137. you're a

  1138. scribe of

  1139. the kingdom.

  1140. You get

  1141. it,

  1142. now give

  1143. it.

  1144. Share

  1145. it.

  1146. Make it

  1147. known.

  1148. Start

  1149. bringing out

  1150. the treasure.

  1151. Make it

  1152. known.

  1153. Proclaim

  1154. it.

  1155. Let others

  1156. know about

  1157. it.

  1158. Now,

  1159. you might be

  1160. sitting there

  1161. and you're

  1162. saying,

  1163. well,

  1164. I don't

  1165. really think

  1166. that the

  1167. Bible is

  1168. that

  1169. treasurable.

  1170. I don't

  1171. find it

  1172. that

  1173. interesting.

  1174. In fact,

  1175. I haven't

  1176. been in

  1177. the Bible

  1178. for seven

  1179. years.

  1180. You know

  1181. where to

  1182. start?

  1183. Don't wait

  1184. on a

  1185. feeling.

  1186. Just get

  1187. into the

  1188. Bible.

  1189. In

  1190. Psalm 19,

  1191. David

  1192. likens the

  1193. Bible to

  1194. gold.

  1195. Fine

  1196. gold.

  1197. Psalm 119,

    Psalms 119:127

  1198. verse 127,

  1199. Oh,

  1200. the

  1201. psalmist

  1202. wants God's

  1203. instructions

  1204. more than

  1205. gold.

  1206. Treasure.

  1207. So,

  1208. if you

  1209. are a

  1210. Christian

  1211. and you

  1212. haven't

  1213. been in

  1214. God's

  1215. Word,

  1216. get into

  1217. Psalm 19.

  1218. Get into

  1219. Psalm 119

  1220. and ask

  1221. God to

  1222. stir your

  1223. heart to

  1224. treasure

  1225. His Word.

  1226. Incline my

  1227. heart to

  1228. your

  1229. testimonies

  1230. and not to

  1231. selfish gain.

  1232. Open my

  1233. eyes that I

  1234. may behold

  1235. wonderful treasure

  1236. things from

  1237. your law.

  1238. Unite my

  1239. heart to

  1240. fear your

  1241. name.

  1242. Satisfy me in

  1243. the morning with

  1244. your unfailing

  1245. love as revealed

  1246. in the treasure

  1247. of Scripture.

  1248. Scripture.

  1249. I recently

  1250. teamed up with a

  1251. friend and we

  1252. have been sharing a

  1253. psalm every day

  1254. through the ESV

  1255. Bible app.

1256. And we look at the

  1257. same psalm and then

  1258. we text each other

  1259. about it.

  1260. You know what it

  1261. does?

  1262. We treasure God's

  1263. Word together.

  1264. As scribes of

  1265. the kingdom,

  1266. bring out the

  1267. treasure.

  1268. But you've got to

  1269. treasure it first.

  1270. Treasure the

  1271. treasure by being

  1272. in the treasure.

  1273. Parents, be

  1274. kingdom scribes

  1275. to your kids.

  1276. Bring out the

  1277. treasure.

  1278. Dads, your

  1279. families need

  1280. you to be a

  1281. scribe of the

  1282. kingdom and

  1283. bring out the

  1284. treasure for

  1285. them.

  1286. New and old.

  1287. Show them the

  1288. glories of God

  1289. in the Bible.

  1290. Show them the

  1291. wonders of His

  1292. salvation.

  1293. Show them the

  1294. kingdom.

  1295. Now you may be

  1296. wondering, well,

  1297. where do I start?

  1298. Start modest.

  1299. Be thinking five

  1300. minutes.

  1301. Make sure you

  1302. have a time and

  1303. a place and a

  1304. plan.

  1305. The Salvadis do

  1306. it.

  1307. Let me show you

  1308. ours.

  1309. We don't do this

  1310. every morning, but

  1311. we're somewhat

  1312. regular.

  1313. together.

  1314. And our time is

  1315. in the mornings

  1316. after we eat

  1317. breakfast together.

  1318. And the place is

  1319. our dining room

  1320. table.

  1321. And what is our

  1322. plan?

  1323. Right now we're

  1324. going through this

  1325. thing called the

  1326. New City Catechism.

1327. And what it is is

  1328. the bringing out of

  1329. treasure.

  1330. And we do that

  1331. together.

1332. And it is a sweet,

  1333. sweet thing.

  1334. So if you're a dad

  1335. who's not led his

  1336. family this way

  1337. before, take a

  1338. step.

  1339. Start it.

  1340. Give it two to

  1341. three weeks.

1342. Let it get into a

  1343. rhythm.

  1344. And see the effect

1345. that it will have on

  1346. your family.

  1347. And you don't need

  1348. kids.

  1349. If you're a husband

  1350. and a wife, whether

  1351. you're just getting

  1352. started or you have

  1353. kids out of the

  1354. house, use the New

  1355. City Catechism.

  1356. That is a gem.

  1357. You can download

  1358. it.

  1359. Look it up.

  1360. Google it.

  1361. Finally, I just want

  1362. to say this.

  1363. Christ the King

  1364. Church has a help

  1365. wanted sign.

  1366. Scribes needed.

  1367. We need scribes.

  1368. We need brothers and

  1369. sisters who want to

  1370. bring out the treasure

  1371. of God's Word.

  1372. New and old.

  1373. We need scribes to

  1374. bring out the

  1375. treasures to our

  1376. children on Sunday

  1377. morning.

1378. as a part of the

  1379. King's Kids

  1380. Ministry.

  1381. If you're interested

  1382. in teaching the

  1383. treasures of God's

  1384. Word to our kids,

  1385. Billy's available.

  1386. Danielle Morrow would

  1387. be the other person

  1388. to talk to.

  1389. We need scribes to

  1390. bring out the

  1391. treasure of God's

  1392. Word on Thursday

  1393. nights as part of

  1394. our youth ministry.

  1395. We need scribes to

  1396. bring out the

  1397. treasures of the

  1398. book on Saturday

  1399. mornings during the

  1400. men's Bible study.

  1401. They're in Hebrews

  1402. bringing out the

  1403. treasure.

  1404. treasure.

  1405. Guys.

  1406. More guys.

  1407. Go to that.

  1408. It's awesome.

  1409. We need scribes to

  1410. bring out the

  1411. treasure of God's

1412. Word as part of our

  1413. life groups.

1414. When you go to your

  1415. life group and God

  1416. has put on something

  1417. in your heart that

  1418. morning from God's

  1419. Word, you bring it.

  1420. Bring the treasure.

  1421. Share it.

  1422. Share it.

  1423. We need people to

  1424. bring out the

  1425. treasure at our

  1426. Sunday morning

  1427. breakfast.

  1428. We've got a group of

  1429. guys preaching through

1430. John and it is a

  1431. treasure trove, but we

  1432. also need people around

  1433. the tables informally

  1434. bringing out the

  1435. treasure.

  1436. But there's one

  1437. particular place we're

  1438. in particular need.

  1439. We need scribes of

  1440. the kingdom to bring

  1441. out the treasure of

  1442. God's Word at our

  1443. Wednesday afternoon

  1444. tutoring program.

1445. The name of that is

  1446. King's Place.

  1447. The King's Place

  1448. After School Mentoring

  1449. Program.

1450. And what we are in

  1451. great need of is

  1452. adult men.

  1453. Brothers, if you have

  1454. time Wednesday

  1455. afternoon starting

  1456. around 4 o'clock, it

  1457. would be a great

  1458. investment of your

  1459. life and eternity to

  1460. come and bring out

  1461. the treasure for

  1462. these kids from

  1463. Frank neighborhood.

  1464. We're having 15 or

  1465. 20 kids come now.

  1466. And they respond.

  1467. They're looking for an

  1468. adult man to build

  1469. into them.

  1470. Now can you imagine

  1471. what will happen if

  1472. we took Jesus' words

1473. to heart as a church

  1474. and we began bringing

  1475. out the treasure of

  1476. His Word, of the

  1477. kingdom, and we

1478. brought it out in our

  1479. marriages, in our

  1480. friendships, in our

  1481. families, in our

  1482. life groups, our

  1483. ministries here on

  1484. Sunday morning.

  1485. Do you know what's

  1486. going to happen?

  1487. We're going to

  1488. treasure God.

  1489. God's Word is going

1490. to go out in power.

  1491. It's going to change

  1492. lives.

  1493. People are going to

  1494. get drawn into the

  1495. kingdom and His

  1496. kingdom is going to

  1497. spread.

  1498. Would you lift up

  1499. your Bible one more

  1500. time?

  1501. Repeat this word

  1502. after me.

  1503. Let's say treasure

  1504. together on three.

  1505. One, two, three,

  1506. treasure.

1507. God in heaven, we do

1508. thank you so much for

  1509. this book.

  1510. We thank you for

  1511. what you've revealed

  1512. about yourself and

  1513. your work of

  1514. salvation in it.

1515. And we pray that you

  1516. would get this book

  1517. dwelling richly in us

1518. as a church in every

  1519. nook and cranny of

  1520. our life.

  1521. God, would you do

1522. it for the glory of

  1523. your name and the

  1524. good of your people.

  1525. Amen.
