  1. Pastor Mike is away this week, and I'm very grateful for the opportunity to preach this morning.

  2. We're going to take a short break from the series on the Gospel of Matthew,

  3. and we're going to look at the well-known story of Daniel in the lion's den.

  4. Would you turn with me in your Bibles to Daniel chapter 6?

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  5. If you're using one of those paperback pew Bibles, it's page 828.

  6. The title is Citizens of Heaven in a Land of Exile.

  7. We're going to be in Daniel chapter 6.

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  8. This is a story about Daniel and God's people living in a land far away from home.

  9. Sometimes that word home can be a little bit complicated.

  10. Until I was a teenager, I lived as a missionary kid in Zaire, Africa, in Central Africa.

  11. It's now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  12. And it was a wonderful life there.

  13. I went to the market with my mom.

  14. We played tag in the neighborhood, and there were these grassy hills behind our house,

  15. and we would go up there and play.

  16. And I just loved my home there.

  17. I loved the people there in Central Africa.

  18. I loved their big smiles and the laughter and the dancing and the fruit on the trees and the climate.

  19. And it was just a wonderful place to grow up.

  20. Just outdoors all the time and a slow pace of life.

  21. But there was a tension because even though that was my home, it wasn't really my home.

  22. You know what I mean by that?

  23. My parents taught me the Pledge of Allegiance and the U.S. National Anthem, and I learned about the U.S. Presidents.

  24. And people would ask me there in Zaire, where do you come from?

  25. And I would say, Ohio.

  26. Ohio.

  27. That wasn't really true, but it was kind of true.

  28. That was at least where my parents were from.

  29. And people would say to me, where are your grandparents?

  30. And I would say, well, they're in Ohio.

  31. That was true, but I didn't know them, really.

  32. I had met them when I was very young.

  33. So it was sort of confusing because my blue passport said that I was a citizen of the United States,

  34. but my real home was kind of in Africa, but technically my home was a place in the U.S.

  35. where I had spent very little time.

  36. And so then when we came back to the States permanently when I was in high school,

  37. I was living in Ohio, and then people would say to me, where are you from?

  38. And I would always hesitate.

  39. Two places, I guess, right?

  40. On the one hand, I was from Africa.

  41. That place felt like home, but I guess technically it really wasn't.

  42. And then on the other hand, I was in Ohio, which was technically my home, but sure didn't feel like it.

  43. Israel, too, had a home that had been a glorious gift of God.

  44. It was part of the covenant that God had made with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.

  45. And that was where God had fought for them and delivered them from their enemies.

  46. That was the land of Joshua and Ruth and King David and King Solomon and Elijah and Elisha.

  47. That was where the temple was.

  48. That was where the priesthood was.

  49. That's where God's presence was manifested in a very special way, unlike any place else on earth.

  50. That was Israel.

  51. And that was where they were deeply connected to their faith and their identity as the people of God.

  52. So when they were conquered by the Babylonians and taken into exile,

  53. and the Babylonians tore down their temple and destroyed the priesthood

  54. and stole the furniture and the equipment out of the temple

  55. and brutally murdered some of the people of God and took others away into a foreign land,

  56. there was a crisis of some sort because they were now in danger of assimilating.

  57. They were in danger of becoming just like everybody else and losing their distinctives as the people of God

  58. and even disrupting God's promised plan of salvation that he would bring through Christ.

  59. Babylon and Persia were their new home, sort of, but not really their home.

  60. It couldn't be their ultimate home because they had to remain faithful to God

  61. even as they lived in a foreign land that was often quite hostile to them.

  62. So the book of Daniel was written to encourage the people of God as they lived in a foreign land.

  63. It's divided into two parts.

  64. The first six chapters are stories about God delivering Daniel and his friends

  65. from intense pressure and persecution at times.

  66. They're miraculously protected by him.

  67. And then chapters 7 through 12 are apocalyptic visions

  68. about the fact that God is in complete control of the affairs of the world

  69. and he will be victorious in the end.

  70. So it's a great encouragement to God's people who are tempted to despair.

  71. They may face difficulty and persecution.

  72. They may be hated and despised for their faith.

  73. But they are on the winning team.

  74. So no matter how bad things look right now for Daniel and his friends,

  75. God will vindicate his people.

  76. And this is good news for us.

  77. This is a powerful book for us because now we are the people of God living in exile.

  78. Before we knew Christ, we were full citizens of this world.

  79. Paul says in Ephesians chapter 2 that we follow the course of this world

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  80. and the prince of the power of the air.

  81. This world is destined for destruction and that was our destiny too

  82. because we were citizens of this world.

  83. We were strangers and aliens to God's country.

  84. Separated from God and hostile to him.

  85. But when we committed our lives to Christ, we defected to his country.

  86. Paul says that we became fellow citizens with the saints

  87. and members of the household of God.

  88. When you think about it, most defectors, when they defect,

  89. they move to the new country, right?

  90. If you're a Russian citizen and you defect to the United States,

  91. you move to the United States because otherwise it would not be safe for you.

  92. But we don't move right to heaven.

  93. We defect to heaven and defect to God's country,

  94. but we stay here.

  95. We represent God in a fallen world and now it's complicated because we have two homes.

  96. We have this home and we have that home.

  97. This is the only world we've ever known,

  98. but now we're strangers here.

  99. We really belong someplace else.

  100. Our real home is in heaven, but we've never been there before.

  101. So it's not very easy.

  102. And sometimes in this society, people think we're crazy.

  103. We're crazy because of what we believe.

  104. We're crazy because we follow this Jesus who lived a long time ago.

  105. Or they think we're dangerous.

  106. They think we're dangerous because our stance on marriage means that we're bigots and hypocrites.

  107. Our stance on life in the womb means that we are anti-women.

  108. We're dangerously out of step with a progressive society,

  109. modern society, because we take our values from the Bible.

  110. And so the question is, I mean always, what should we do?

  111. How do we live here in exile in a faithful way, away from our home?

  112. And I think this is one of the key things that the book of Daniel in chapter 6 addresses for us.

  113. So let's take a look at Daniel chapter 6.

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  114. We can divide this short story into three sections.

  115. Each of the sections has a little bit of a surprise for us.

  116. There's three sections and there's three surprises.

  117. And the first section is in verses 1 through 13.

  118. So I'm going to read that first part and then we'll talk about it and we'll read the second part.

  119. So please don't read ahead.

  120. I know it's hard.

  121. I know it's hard.

  122. Here we go.

  123. You're probably familiar with this story anyway.

  124. Here we go.

  125. It says in verse 1,

  126. It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom,

  127. with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.

  128. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss.

  129. Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities

  130. that the king planned to set him over the entire kingdom.

  131. At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs.

  132. But they were unable to do so.

  133. They could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.

  134. Finally, these men said,

  135. We will never find any basis for charges against this man, Daniel, unless it has something to do with the law of his God.

  136. So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said,

  137. May King Darius live forever.

  138. The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisors, and governors have all agreed

  139. that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree

  140. that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next 30 days,

  141. except to you, your majesty, shall be thrown into the lion's den.

  142. Now your majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered

  143. in accordance with the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be repealed.

  144. So King Darius put the decree in writing.

  145. Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published,

  146. he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem.

  147. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed,

  148. giving thanks to his God just as he had done before.

  149. Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.

  150. So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree.

  151. Did you not publish a decree that during the next 30 days,

  152. anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, your majesty,

  153. would be thrown into the lion's den?

  154. The king answered,

  155. The decree stands in accordance with the law of the Medes and the Persians,

  156. which cannot be repealed.

  157. Then they said to the king,

  158. Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,

  159. pays no attention to you, your majesty,

  160. or to the decree you put in writing.

  161. He still prays three times a day.

  162. So the story begins with King Darius,

  163. who has not really been introduced to us,

  164. except in the previous verses back in chapter 5, 30 through 31,

  165. which tell us that Darius took over the kingdom from King Belshazzar at the age of 62.

  166. Persia was a massive empire that stretched from India in the east

  167. all the way over to Egypt and Asia Minor in the west.

  168. It was the largest empire ever seen.

  169. And it was divided into 120 regions that were governed by these satraps.

  170. So they had to have some sort of a complex bureaucracy

  171. because this is a very, very large empire.

  172. And verse 2 tells us that the king had placed three high officials over the 120 satraps.

  173. And verse 3 tells us that not only was Daniel one of these three high officials,

  174. but he was in line for promotion to run the entire kingdom.

  175. And why was this?

  176. Well, because it tells us in verse 2

  177. that he was not corrupt.

  178. The king felt he would not suffer loss.

  179. And in verse 3 it says that he had distinguished himself by his exceptional qualities.

  180. Now you know how it is when someone in the office is promoted to a higher position.

  181. Everybody grumbles and they gather around the water cooler

  182. and they all complain and get angry.

  183. And here the satraps and the high officials created a conspiracy against Daniel.

  184. They wanted him gone.

  185. But he was so exceptional and his character was so impressive

  186. that they couldn't find any way to take him down.

  187. Look what it says in verse 4.

  188. It says he was trustworthy.

  189. He was not corrupt.

  190. He was not negligent in his duties.

  191. In other words, he was a very, very strange government official.

  192. So there are two hints in the story, though,

  193. that the conspiracy was actually about more than just envy of his upcoming promotion.

  194. Because the first hint comes in verse 5

  195. when it says that we will bring a charge for him

  196. in accordance with the law of his God.

  197. And then look down at verse 13.

  198. It says in 13 that he was one of the exiles from Judah.

  199. Now, everybody knows that Daniel was one of the exiles from Judah.

  200. That had been long established.

  201. The king knew that.

  202. They knew that.

  203. So why bring it up?

  204. Well, it's just insight into their underlying motives.

  205. Maybe they thought that Daniel was not quite loyal enough to Persia.

  206. He's not really one of us.

  207. He doesn't belong here.

  208. He's not a true Persian.

  209. And so they hatch a conspiracy, and everyone is in on it.

  210. Look at verse 7.

  211. The royal administrators and the prefects and the satraps

  212. and the advisors and the governors have all agreed.

  213. They're all ganging up on him.

  214. And to appeal to the king's vanity,

  215. they recommend a law that prohibits praying to anyone but the king

  216. for a period of 30 days, just enough to prove that Daniel is unfaithful to the king.

  217. And so the king signs a decree that cannot be repealed,

  218. and now Daniel is in a very tough spot.

  219. To this point, his faith and his identity as a Jew have not gotten into conflict with his role in the Persian government.

  220. There hasn't been any conflict there.

  221. But now they've made it an issue.

  222. They've made it a problem.

  223. And he can take a break from his faith for 30 days,

  224. or he can be thrown to a den of lions.

  225. Now I know we're all probably pretty familiar with this story,

  226. but we don't want that to get in the way of some of the details here.

  227. Let's take just a moment and imagine death by lion.

  228. We don't want to minimize the threat here.

  229. You know, there are a lot of terrible ways to die.

  230. There are some ways to die that are not so bad,

  231. and then there are some terrible ways to die,

  232. and I would think that death by lions would be at the top.

  233. The Persians had all kinds of ways that they could have killed people.

  234. Very quick, very painless.

  235. Take a sword, for example.

  236. But to go through the trouble of death by lion,

  237. you have to procure the lions,

  238. and you have to house the lions and feed the lions.

  239. It's a big deal.

  240. Why would they do that?

  241. Because it was so brutal.

  242. We're talking about growling,

  243. biting,

  244. ripping,

  245. tearing,

  246. eating.

  247. I mean, we can stop there, right?

  248. It's bad.

  249. It's bad.

  250. It's a bad way to die.

  251. And so what Daniel is facing here for his faith

  252. is not being mocked.

  253. It's not being fired from his job.

  254. It's not going to jail.

  255. It's not even a painless beheading or something like that.

  256. It is death by lion.

  257. And in verse 10,

  258. we see the first surprise in this section,

  259. which is that when Daniel learned what was up,

  260. he went home to his upstairs room,

  261. got down on his knees and prayed,

  262. just as he had done before.

  263. He is well aware of the trap that they have laid for him,

  264. but without missing a beat,

  265. he goes home,

  266. gets on his knees,

  267. and prays to God.

  268. And think about the way that this is presented to us.

  269. It doesn't,

  270. the narrator does not present any conflict

  271. or any inner turmoil to us.

  272. It is just a reflex for him.

  273. It is time to pray,

  274. so he goes down and prays.

  275. He doesn't care what the edict was.

  276. But you can imagine the temptation

  277. that he was feeling.

  278. It is not a compromise.

  279. It is a little compromise.

  280. He is not actually being asked to break one of God's laws.

  281. He is only being asked to omit a spiritual discipline.

  282. It is not so big.

  283. He is not actually being asked to pray to the king.

  284. He is only being asked to refrain from praying to God.

  285. That is not quite,

  286. that is not idolatry, right?

  287. I mean, I have neglected prayer

  288. to listen to sports radio

  289. or because I was hungry for a snack.

  290. It is a big deal.

  291. He could change his routine.

  292. Why can't Daniel just pray in private?

  293. Or why can't he just pray secretly in his head?

  294. He could be doing other things

  295. and praying in his head

  296. and no one would even know.

  297. Why not just do that?

  298. It does not even have to look like he is praying.

  299. And he is only giving thanks to God, it says here.

  300. He is only giving thanks to God.

  301. It is not,

  302. surely that can go on hold for a couple of weeks.

  303. But besides, if he is killed,

  304. then he won't be able to look out

  305. for the other Jewish exiles

  306. and to exert positive influence

  307. in the Persian government.

  308. Think about the loss of good godly influence

  309. that will be lost in the government.

  310. Which is more important,

  311. to thank God

  312. or to have a faithful Yahweh honoring man

  313. with great character in power?

  314. I mean, surely you can take a break for 30 days.

  315. But even though the compromise seems small,

  316. look what it says in the text.

  317. It says,

  318. He went home to his upstairs room

  319. where the windows opened toward Jerusalem.

  320. Now, why is that detail in there?

  321. The narrator doesn't have to tell us that little detail about Jerusalem,

  322. but it does because it's a way of showing us

  323. that Daniel's home was someplace else.

  324. Daniel's true home,

  325. he lived in Persia,

  326. he worked in Persia,

  327. but his true home was in Jerusalem.

  328. And so when he got down to pray,

  329. he faced Jerusalem,

  330. and that was the sticking point.

  331. The Persian conspirators knew

  332. that this wasn't just about a little prayer.

  333. This was about loyalty.

  334. This was about Daniel's ultimate loyalty.

  335. And Daniel doesn't make a big show of his prayer.

  336. He doesn't ring the bells

  337. and make a big to-do of it,

  338. but he doesn't hide it either.

  339. He simply gets down, as always, and prays.

  340. And in verse 11,

  341. he's discovered by the officials,

  342. and they report him to the king,

  343. and they interpret his prayer as a disloyal act.

  344. Look what they say in verse 13.

  345. No one pays any attention to you, your majesty.

  346. He still prays three times a day.

  347. So the immovable object of Persian law

  348. has met the unstoppable force of Daniel's prayer,

  349. and something is going to have to give.

  350. So this first section of Daniel

  351. is dominated by these conspiring government officials.

  352. They're the only ones who speak,

  353. and the narrator presents them as a large group,

  354. all in agreement,

  355. who are scheming against Daniel.

  356. Daniel wasn't provocative.

  357. He didn't cause any trouble.

  358. He got up every day,

  359. and he went into the office,

  360. and he worked hard for the good of the Persian Empire,

  361. and he did what was best for the king,

  362. and for the welfare of his society,

  363. and he lost sleep over their problems,

  364. and he built relationships and networked with them,

  365. but at night,

  366. he went home and prayed toward Jerusalem.

  367. He lived in Persia,

  368. but he knew where his true home was.

  369. So when he was commanded to neglect

  370. even a small aspect of his faith,

  371. only a daily thanksgiving prayer,

  372. when his ultimate loyalty was challenged,

  373. he would not compromise even an inch.

  374. And we've seen this before in the book of Daniel.

  375. Back in chapter 1,

  376. Daniel and his friends are accommodating to the Babylonians,

  377. and they learn their language,

  378. and they eat their food,

  379. and they take Babylonian names,

  380. but it says,

  381. Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself

  382. with the unclean food.

  383. He drew a line, a hard line.

  384. He said,

  385. I will live in this land,

  386. and I will flourish in this land,

  387. but I will do nothing,

  388. no matter how small,

  389. that betrays my loyalty to God

  390. and my true home.

  391. And in chapter 3,

  392. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  393. are commanded to worship Nebuchadnezzar's golden image,

  394. or be thrown into a fire and burned alive.

  395. And they refuse,

  396. and they say,

  397. we will not worship your gods

  398. or the golden image that you have set up.

  399. And now here in Daniel 6,

  400. the decree goes out,

  401. no praying to God for 30 days,

  402. or you will be ripped open

  403. and eaten alive by lions.

  404. And Daniel says,

  405. what can I do?

  406. I will not compromise

  407. when it comes to my faith.

  408. So Daniel serves as a model for us

  409. because life in exile can be tricky.

  410. In some countries and in some times,

  411. we have more freedom than others.

  412. But when the conflict comes down

  413. to a matter of our ultimate loyalty,

  414. we choose our identity as the people of God.

  415. We draw a line,

  416. and we say,

  417. with God's help,

  418. I will not cross that line.

  419. I will not serve what is apostate.

  420. I will not cease to serve the living God,

  421. no matter the consequences.

  422. Someone might say to us,

  423. well, it's not a gospel issue.

  424. It's not really a key point of Christian doctrine.

  425. Well, maybe so,

  426. but I will not deny

  427. what God has revealed to me.

  428. Someone might say to me,

  429. well, but if you make this small compromise,

  430. it might open up other kinds of opportunities

  431. and influence for you.

  432. No.

  433. And they might say,

  434. well, this little issue isn't worth your job.

  435. I mean, this little issue,

  436. it's not worth fighting over this

  437. for your reputation.

  438. It certainly isn't worth your life.

  439. Yes, but this is not my home.

  440. When loyalty to the land of our exile

  441. is in conflict with loyalty to God,

  442. no matter how small that issue is,

  443. we choose God.

  444. Daniel would rather be eaten by lions

  445. than take a 30-day break from his prayer.

  446. Let's look at the next section

  447. in verses 14 through 22.

  448. It says,

  449. When the king heard this,

  450. he was greatly distressed.

  451. He was determined to rescue Daniel

  452. and made every effort until sundown to save him.

  453. Then the men went as a group to King Darius

  454. and said to him,

  455. Remember, your majesty,

  456. that according to the law of the Medes and the Persians,

  457. no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.

  458. So the king gave the order,

  459. and they brought Daniel

  460. and threw him into the lion's den.

  461. The king said to Daniel,

  462. May your God, whom you serve,

  463. continually rescue you.

  464. A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den,

  465. and the king sealed it with his own signet ring

  466. and with the rings of his nobles

  467. so that Daniel's situation might not be changed.

  468. Then the king returned to his palace

  469. and spent the night without eating

  470. and without any entertainment being brought to him,

  471. and he could not sleep.

  472. At the first light of dawn,

  473. the king got up and hurried to the lion's den.

  474. When he came near the den,

  475. he called to Daniel in an anguished voice,

  476. Daniel, servant of the living God,

  477. has your God, whom you serve continually,

  478. been able to rescue you from the lions?

  479. Daniel answered,

  480. May the king live forever.

  481. My God sent his angel,

  482. and he shut the mouths of the lions.

  483. They have not hurt me

  484. because I was found innocent in his sight,

  485. nor have I done any wrong before you,

  486. your majesty.

  487. Now it says in verse 14,

  488. when the king heard this,

  489. he was greatly distressed.

  490. And right here at the front of this section

  491. is the first surprise,

  492. is the surprise in this section here.

  493. The surprise here is that

  494. we expect the king to be greatly distressed

  495. because one of his top administrators

  496. has been disloyal to him.

  497. But that's not why he's distressed.

  498. The reason he's distressed

  499. is because Daniel is in trouble.

  500. Look what it says.

  501. It says in verse 14,

  502. It's instructive for us

  503. to compare this reaction

  504. to King Nebuchadnezzar

  505. back in chapter 3

  506. with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  507. When King Nebuchadnezzar

  508. finds out

  509. that three Jews

  510. have refused to bow down

  511. to his image,

  512. listen to his reaction.

  513. He says in 3.13,

  514. it says,

  515. He taunts them in verse 15.

  516. What God will be able

  517. to rescue you out of my hand?

  518. He says in verse 19,

  519. It was furious with them

  520. with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  521. and his attitude toward them changed.

  522. And in verse 22,

  523. His command to throw them

  524. in the fire was urgent.

  525. This is a hostile king

  526. who was angry at these three guys

  527. and couldn't wait

  528. to chuck them

  529. into the fiery furnace.

  530. But here in chapter 6,

  531. Darius' reaction is the opposite.

  532. Look what it says in verse 13.

  533. Sorry.

  534. Look what it says in verse 16.

  535. It says,

  536. May your God whom you serve

  537. continually rescue you.

  538. Verse 18,

  539. He spent the night without eating

  540. and without entertainment.

  541. He could not sleep.

  542. At the first light of dawn,

  543. he hurried to the lion's den.

  544. He was speaking in an anguished voice

  545. when he said,

  546. Daniel, servant of the living God,

  547. have you been rescued?

  548. Here's the question.

  549. Why does the king

  550. care for Daniel like this?

  551. Why is he so concerned

  552. to rescue Daniel

  553. instead of hastening his death?

  554. We expect the king

  555. to be offended.

  556. This law was supposedly

  557. about loyalty to himself

  558. that no one could pray

  559. to anyone but him.

  560. And now Daniel,

  561. his trusted advisor,

  562. has broken it.

  563. And instead,

  564. he's up all night.

  565. He doesn't know what to do.

  566. How is he going to

  567. find a loophole

  568. in this Persian law

  569. and find a way

  570. of rescuing Daniel?

  571. He's trapped

  572. by his own law.

  573. He's frantic.

  574. What is he going to do here?

  575. When he goes down

  576. to the lion's den,

  577. Daniel calls out to him

  578. in verse 21,

  579. May the king live forever.

  580. That's Daniel's answer

  581. to say,

  582. I am alive.

  583. May the king live forever.

  584. Now, Daniel's response

  585. in verses 21 and 22

  586. is important

  587. because these are

  588. the only two verses

  589. in the entire story

  590. where Daniel speaks.

  591. So if we want to know

  592. what Daniel thinks

  593. about all of this,

  594. here it is.

  595. Here's our chance

  596. in verses 21 and 22.

  597. First of all,

  598. in verse 21,

  599. when he says,

  600. May the king live forever.

  601. This is exactly

  602. the same way

  603. that the other administrators

  604. in satraps

  605. addressed the king

  606. back in verse 6.

  607. It's subtle,

  608. but it suggests

  609. that he is just as loyal

  610. to the king

  611. as they are.

  612. In fact,

  613. based on the fact

  614. that they're conspiring

  615. and trying to trick the king,

  616. I think Daniel's actually

  617. more loyal to the king

  618. than they are.

  619. Then he says in verse 22,

  620. My God sent his angel

  621. and he shut the mouths

  622. of the lions

  623. and they haven't heard me

  624. because I was innocent

  625. in his sight.

  626. I have not been unfaithful

  627. to God.

  628. But then he says,

  629. Nor have I done any wrong

  630. before you,

  631. your majesty.

  632. I am faithful to you,

  633. O king.

  634. I am faithful to you.

  635. In other words,

  636. he was loyal both to God

  637. and to King Darius

  638. and it's like he's saying,

  639. Just because I pray

  640. to my God

  641. and my priority

  642. is to my God,

  643. that does not mean

  644. that I am not also

  645. loyal to you.

  646. So this tension,

  647. the king's concern

  648. for Daniel

  649. and Daniel's loyalty

  650. to the king

  651. suggests something

  652. very important

  653. about Daniel's approach

  654. to living in exile.

  655. Even though

  656. he is absolutely

  657. unbending

  658. and uncompromising

  659. about his true home

  660. back in Jerusalem,

  661. he is equally invested

  662. in working

  663. for the good

  664. of his present home,

  665. the king.

  666. We've already seen this

  667. at the beginning

  668. of the story

  669. that Daniel

  670. distinguished himself

  671. in his government service,

  672. that he was trustworthy,

  673. that he had integrity

  674. and fulfilled

  675. all his duties.

  676. And now,

  677. when he comes out

  678. of the den of lions,

  679. he says to the king,

  680. I am faithful to you.

  681. Daniel,

  682. at this point in the book,

  683. is about 70 years old

  684. and he has proven

  685. over a lifetime

  686. of service

  687. that he is committed

  688. to the good

  689. of the Persian empire.

  690. It's not his ultimate home,

  691. but it's his home for now.

  692. And so his character,

  693. compelled by his faith

  694. in God,

  695. causes him to work

  696. for the good

  697. of the king

  698. and the nation

  699. and that has earned

  700. the king's respect.

  701. Daniel has dual citizenship.

  702. It has a hierarchy.

  703. He knows

  704. to whom he really belongs,

  705. but at the end of the day,

  706. that is not a threat

  707. to the king

  708. because he has proven himself

  709. day after day

  710. after day.

  711. If the government

  712. makes his faith

  713. incompatible with Persia,

  714. he will choose

  715. his faith.

  716. But otherwise,

  717. Daniel will be

  718. a loyal Persian citizen.

  719. As Paul says

  720. in 1 Timothy,

  721. he will live

  722. a peaceful

  723. and quiet life,

  724. godly and dignified

  725. in every way.

  726. Daniel is a model

  727. for us

  728. to live joyfully

  729. and responsibly

  730. and engaged

  731. in our land

  732. of exile as well.

  733. This is a little bit

  734. of a difficult balance

  735. for us sometimes

  736. because it's easy

  737. when we're trying

  738. to walk this narrow road

  739. to fall into the ditch

  740. on either side.

  741. On the one hand,

  742. we can sort of fall

  743. into the ditch

  744. of compromise,

  745. to become like

  746. everybody else,

  747. to betray our faith,

  748. maybe not even

  749. without thinking about it,

  750. to accept the values

  751. of our culture

  752. and just sort of

  753. think like everyone else

  754. and to neglect

  755. our heavenly citizenship.

  756. That's one ditch

  757. that we can fall into.

  758. But then on the other

  759. side of the road,

  760. we can overcorrect

  761. and we can fall

  762. in that other ditch

  763. and that is

  764. that we get rigid

  765. and bitter

  766. and angry

  767. and we just,

  768. we just can't wait

  769. for the world to burn.

  770. We look at everything

  771. around us,

  772. our culture,

  773. and we just say,

  774. I just can't wait

  775. until this place burns

  776. and I go to heaven.

  777. That's the other ditch,

  778. right?

  779. And Daniel is a model

  780. of walking that thin line.

  781. He is both uncompromising,

  782. in his faith,

  783. but also fully engaged

  784. in his present land

  785. for its good.

  786. When loyalty to the nation,

  787. whichever nation that is,

  788. is not in conflict

  789. with loyalty to God,

  790. we should be the best

  791. of citizens.

  792. Loyal,

  793. serving,

  794. doing what is right,

  795. working hard,

  796. innocent before God,

  797. and faithful to the king.

  798. Finally,

  799. let's look at the last section

  800. in verses 23 to 28.

  801. The king was overjoyed,

  802. right?

  803. There was this moment

  804. of suspense.

  805. Daniel,

  806. are you in there?

  807. Are you alive?

  808. Long pause.

  809. May the king live forever.

  810. Oh,

  811. he's alive.

  812. The king was overjoyed

  813. and gave orders

  814. to lift Daniel

  815. out of the den,

  816. and when Daniel

  817. was lifted from the den,

  818. no wound was found on him

  819. because he had trusted

  820. in his God.

  821. At the king's command,

  822. the men who had falsely

  823. accused Daniel

  824. were brought in

  825. and thrown into

  826. the lion's den,

  827. along with their wives

  828. and children,

  829. and before they reached

  830. the floor of the den,

  831. the lions overpowered them

  832. and crushed all their bones.

  833. Then King Darius wrote

  834. to all the nations

  835. and the peoples

  836. of every language

  837. in all the earth,

  838. may you prosper greatly.

  839. I issue a decree

  840. that in every part

  841. of my kingdom,

  842. people must fear

  843. and reverence

  844. the God of Daniel,

  845. for he is the living God

  846. and he endures forever.

  847. His kingdom

  848. will not be destroyed.

  849. His dominion

  850. will never end.

  851. He rescues

  852. and he saves.

  853. He performs signs

  854. and wonders

  855. in the heavens

  856. and on the earth.

  857. He has rescued Daniel

  858. from the power

  859. of the lions.

  860. So Daniel prospered

  861. during the reign of Darius

  862. and the reign of Cyrus

  863. the Persian.

  864. The surprise here

  865. is that while Daniel

  866. has been saved,

  867. which is a shock,

  868. his enemies

  869. have been destroyed.

  870. The king has lifted Daniel

  871. out of the den of lions

  872. and no wound

  873. is found on him.

  874. It's not like he was

  875. down there all night long

  876. with a stick,

  877. you know,

  878. fending them off

  879. and when they pull him

  880. out of the lion's den,

  881. he's just a wreck, right?

  882. He's just a mess

  883. and he's got to go

  884. straight to the ER

  885. because he's barely alive.

  886. No, there's no wound

  887. on him at all.

  888. It was a miracle.

  889. God shut the mouths

  890. of those lions

  891. and saved him.

  892. Why?

  893. Because of what it says

  894. in verse 23,

  895. because he had trusted

  896. in his God.

  897. The narrator does not

  898. want you to miss that.

  899. You might be able

  900. to pick it up

  901. on your own,

  902. but the narrator

  903. doesn't want you

  904. to have to figure that out.

  905. God protected Daniel

  906. because Daniel

  907. put his trust in God.

  908. And in verse 24,

  909. Daniel's accusers

  910. are thrown to the lions

  911. along with their wives

  912. and children.

  913. And this verse tells us

  914. two pretty important things.

  915. First of all,

  916. it tells us that Daniel

  917. was saved only

  918. by the power of God.

  919. I've read some scholars

  920. on the book of Daniel

  921. who have said,

  922. well, maybe the lions

  923. were ill that night.

  924. Maybe they just

  925. weren't really up to it.

  926. They weren't feeling well.

  927. Or maybe they had been drugged

  928. by some ancient drug.

  929. Or maybe they had been

  930. fed previously that day

  931. and they just weren't hungry.

  932. But here,

  933. when the men

  934. and their wives

  935. and children

  936. are thrown into the lion's den,

  937. before they even

  938. touch the ground,

  939. the lions crush

  940. and kill them.

  941. Did Daniel fight

  942. off the lions?

  943. No.

  944. God's angel

  945. had shut their mouths

  946. and no matter

  947. how hungry they were

  948. as they prowled

  949. and looked at him,

  950. they could just drool.

  951. There's nothing

  952. they could do.

  953. There's no way

  954. that they could touch him.

  955. But not only was it

  956. a miracle,

  957. but verse 24

  958. also tells us

  959. that not only

  960. is God's servant

  961. Daniel saved,

  962. but God's enemies

  963. are destroyed.

  964. That is good news.

  965. Maybe it feels

  966. a little bit

  967. uncomfortable to us

  968. to be cheering

  969. over the hideous death

  970. of Daniel's enemies,

  971. but for God's

  972. oppressed people,

  973. oppressed and

  974. persecuted people

  975. who are suffering

  976. terribly,

  977. who are tormented

  978. and abused

  979. by evildoers,

  980. this is great comfort

  981. to know that God

  982. will fight for his people

  983. and that his justice

  984. will prevail in the end.

  985. This is an incredible miracle

  986. and look how it affects

  987. King Darius

  988. in verses 26 and 27.

  989. Let me read this again.

  990. He is the living God,

  991. Darius says,

  992. and God endures forever.

  993. His kingdom

  994. will not be destroyed.

  995. His dominion,

  996. that other home,

  997. the home of Daniel,

  998. will never end.

  999. He rescues and saves.

  1000. He performs signs

  1001. and wonders

  1002. in the heavens

  1003. and on the earth.

  1004. He has rescued Daniel

  1005. from the power

  1006. of the lions.

1007. And in a great irony,

  1008. here at the end

  1009. of the story,

  1010. we learn about

  1011. the nature

  1012. and the power

  1013. of God

  1014. from the mouth

  1015. of a pagan king.

  1016. The story concludes

  1017. in verse 28

  1018. that Daniel is prospering

1019. in his land of exile.

  1020. Daniel was miraculously saved

1021. because he had trusted in God.

1022. If he had primarily been

  1023. a citizen of Persia,

1024. then he would have attempted

  1025. to solve his problem

  1026. through Persian means.

  1027. Right?

  1028. He would have tried

  1029. to exploit

1030. some kind of legal loophole

  1031. or political maneuver.

  1032. Maybe he would have

  1033. called in some favors

  1034. from some other

  1035. politicians

  1036. or bribed some officials.

  1037. He would have used

1038. some kind of Persian tactics.

  1039. But Daniel is not

  1040. ultimately a citizen

  1041. of Persia.

  1042. He is a citizen

  1043. of heaven.

1044. And that is to whom

  1045. he belongs.

  1046. That's why

  1047. when he hears

  1048. the decree

  1049. about being chucked

  1050. in the lion's den,

  1051. he doesn't call up

  1052. his social network.

  1053. He doesn't get a lawyer.

  1054. He doesn't huddle

  1055. in some dark room

  1056. with some advisors

  1057. to figure out

1058. what they're going to do.

  1059. He gets home

  1060. and he gets down

  1061. on his knees

1062. and he prays to God

1063. and asks him for help.

  1064. And that is why

  1065. he will not compromise

  1066. his faith

  1067. because he knows

1068. that God is the ultimate

1069. answer for what he needs.

  1070. And his faithfulness

  1071. is rewarded.

1072. God is the living God.

  1073. His dominion,

  1074. Daniel's true home country,

  1075. will never end

1076. and God will be victorious.

  1077. God has saved

  1078. his servant Daniel

  1079. and he has destroyed

  1080. his enemies

  1081. and he has brought

  1082. glory to himself.

  1083. God's miracle proves

1084. that he is the one

  1085. who is worthy

  1086. of respect

  1087. and honor

  1088. and ultimate loyalty.

1089. This story is a paradigm.

  1090. It's not a rule.

  1091. It's a paradigm.

  1092. It's a model for us.

  1093. It's a pattern.

  1094. And patterns

  1095. sometimes have exceptions.

  1096. So it's true

  1097. that God does not

  1098. always deliver

  1099. his people

  1100. from martyrdom

1101. in their land of exile.

  1102. Sometimes

  1103. God's people

  1104. suffer terribly.

  1105. Terrible persecution.

  1106. Terrible marginalization

  1107. and death.

  1108. They suffer

  1109. and they're

  1110. exploited

  1111. and imprisoned

  1112. and poor

  1113. and chased

  1114. from one region

  1115. to the next.

1116. Even in Daniel chapter 3

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  1117. Shadrach, Meshach

  1118. and Abednego

  1119. tell the king

1120. our God can save us.

  1121. We don't know

1122. if he will save us

1123. but even if he does not

  1124. we're still not going

1125. to do what you say.

  1126. So there's a recognition

  1127. there that sometimes

  1128. God does not save

  1129. his people

  1130. and he lets them

  1131. suffer terribly.

  1132. But ultimately

  1133. God wins

  1134. and that's the point

  1135. of the story.

  1136. His people always

  1137. end up victorious

1138. if they trust in him.

  1139. When we experience

  1140. pressure to conform

  1141. when we're persecuted

  1142. for our faith

  1143. when we are rejected

  1144. because of our values

  1145. we can have confidence

  1146. in the final victory

  1147. of God.

  1148. We will go

  1149. to our own country

  1150. and we will finally

  1151. be home.

  1152. It says in Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1153. chapter 11

  1154. 13 through 16

  1155. that the people

  1156. of God

  1157. have acknowledged

  1158. that they were

  1159. strangers

  1160. and exiles

  1161. on the earth

  1162. but they desire

  1163. a better country

1164. that is a heavenly one

  1165. for God has prepared

  1166. for them

  1167. a city.

  1168. So when we struggle

1169. in this land of exile

  1170. and we start

  1171. to get discouraged

  1172. when someone asks us

1173. hey where are you from

  1174. we hesitate

  1175. right?

  1176. I guess I have

  1177. two homes.

  1178. When King Darius

  1179. watched Daniel

  1180. stay true

  1181. to his God

  1182. and then watched

  1183. God deliver Daniel

  1184. the king said

1185. he is the living God.

  1186. and he endures

  1187. forever.

  1188. His kingdom

  1189. will not be destroyed.

  1190. His dominion

  1191. will never end.

  1192. He rescues

  1193. and saves.

  1194. He has rescued

  1195. Daniel

  1196. from the power

  1197. of the lions.

  1198. Let's pray.

  1199. Father we thank you

  1200. for your word.

  1201. We thank you

  1202. for the reality

  1203. that is here

  1204. the realism

  1205. about what Daniel

  1206. faced

  1207. about the kinds

  1208. of things

  1209. that your people

  1210. have faced

  1211. throughout history.

  1212. We are not

  1213. flippant

  1214. about the challenges

  1215. of persecution

  1216. and the difficulties

  1217. that Christians

  1218. face today

  1219. in different parts

  1220. of the world

  1221. and we pray

  1222. Lord for your people

  1223. everywhere

  1224. who suffer

  1225. sometimes even

1226. to the point of death

  1227. because of their faith

  1228. in you.

  1229. We pray that you

  1230. would strengthen them

  1231. and help them

  1232. and make your presence

  1233. known to them.

1234. We pray that by the power

  1235. of your spirit

  1236. you would give them

  1237. grace to stand true

  1238. to the gospel

  1239. to stay true

  1240. to their faith

1241. and their trust in you.

  1242. We pray

1243. that you would deliver them

  1244. from their enemies

  1245. that you would ruin

  1246. their enemies

  1247. that you would ruin

  1248. those people

1249. who have set their face

  1250. against you.

1251. And for all of us

  1252. Lord

  1253. we pray here

  1254. that you would

  1255. teach us

  1256. to serve you

  1257. with total commitment

  1258. and unrelenting allegiance.

  1259. We don't know

  1260. all the things

1261. that you have called us to.

  1262. We don't know

  1263. what the future

1264. of each of us holds

  1265. but we pray

1266. that you would help us

1267. to serve our world here

1268. in each of our spheres

  1269. of influence

  1270. with integrity

  1271. and diligence

  1272. and love

  1273. toward other people.

1274. We pray that you would

  1275. help us to be

  1276. the best citizens

  1277. of Kenosha

  1278. and of Wisconsin

  1279. and of the U.S.

  1280. But we also pray

1281. that we would be wise

  1282. to know when

  1283. and how

  1284. to be uncompromising

1285. in our loyalty to you.

  1286. Lord

  1287. we are looking forward

  1288. in the future

  1289. to seeing

  1290. your ultimate victory

  1291. and to seeing

  1292. our eternal home

  1293. with you.

  1294. And so we pray

  1295. with the Apostle John

  1296. even so

  1297. come Lord Jesus.

  1298. Amen.
